Alan Westbrook from Postcode Publications welcomed the new Totem Poles created by Robert Koenig as they were erected recently by Hargreaves - the owners of the Solent Retail Park in Solent Road, Havant.

The Totems tell the story about local leather glove production which formally occupied the site.

The Totems were joint funded by Hargreaves and Postcode Publications continuing the public art theme started by two totems provided by Tesco Extra as part of their redevelopment in Solent Road.

SOUTH STREET WOODLAND GLADE COMMUNITY PROJECT Critchley Architecture and Design are busy producing plans in conjunction with Postcode Publications, Bosmere Junior School and Hampshire County Council for a planning application for two phases of outstanding example of preservation and enhancement proposals for the long established woodland area at the heart of Havant town centre.

A chance discussion with Postcode Publications, Headteacher Chris Anders and Susan Parish - Business and Community Manager at Park Community School, brought to light a project to give disadvantaged pupils opportunities to explore and discover things that they might

otherwise not get to experience.

As we talked, we coined the title YES standing for Young Explorers Squad.

BELL-TOWER LOUVRES RENEWAL PROJECT FUNDRAISING Postcode Publications has pledged £1,500 towards fund-raising for renewal of the once moveable but now seized ‘Venentian blind’ type louvres to St Faiths bell-tower. They look tired against the renewed clock faces and the gleaming gilded weathervane restored with funding from Postcode Publications, and are no longer capable of being opened and closed.

The renewed timber louvres will allow their closure during bell-ringing practice thereby muffling the sound of the bells that some residents find intrusive.

New Havant Totems The two beautifully carved original totem poles standing outside the Tesco Extra store in Solent Road, Havant, represent the transition from the trades and skills of the old town to the extended town centre and new retail developments there.

Robert Koenig the renowned artist of international acclaim who designed and hand carved the totems, has now created two more at the entrance to Solent Retail Park phase two, off School Lane.

Commissioned by Postcode Publications and match funded by Hargreaves the developer of Solent Retail Park, the totems further progress the story of Havant old progressing to Havant new.

One totem depicts a Ferrari on a ‘pathway to heaven’ depicting the passion for Ferraris and immense achievements of Neville Andrew - Hargreaves Chairman who sadly passed away before completion of the development.

The new 15ft high creations were carved and painted from selected Oak trees, with an additional 4ft concreted into the ground for stabilisation.

The original totems outside Tesco have the following storyline: "A carved family group occupies the top sections of each pole.

On the 1st pole a woman/mother dressed in clothes from the early part of the 20 century has a young contemporary boy sitting on her shoulders. On the 2nd pole a contemporary man/father has a young girl dressed in clothes from the early part of the 20th century (including a hat) sitting on his shoulders. In

this way people from Havant's past and present are linked together. Old photos from Havant's past were used as a source of inspiration for the mother and young girl figures. The figures on top of the totems are 13ft from the ground and can be seen from a distance away. They stand high, proudly representing their town and its history.

Other images are carved along the length of the poles are: the spring, the wheel from the Havant water mill, animal skin being prepared for parchment making, a train, hop leaves at the base of the Havant Gazebo and two Roman shields on the walls of the Gazebo.

The totems were coloured using a top quality translucent wood protector".

The new totems are simplified in design.

Each with one main figure.The first is a tanner (male) and the second a glove maker (female).

The male figure emerges from a background of leaves (countryside, nature, trees).The female emerges from a background of brickwork (industry, urban).

On top of the male totem is a carved head of a sheep with reference to historical Parchment making to the old town made from the skins of sheep, goats and calves.

Sheep skins were sent to Havant from all over the Downs. At one point in the carving the sheep fur will mingle with the leaves lower down.

On the top of the female totem is a carved Ferrari driving off into the heavens.

The lower section is covered with a network of gloves referencing another historic trade carried out in the old town.

Report on my work locally and in Westminster Thank you to all of the residents who came to my third Community Groups and Older Persons Information Fair – helping to make it such a success. We had 60 exhibitors and more than 1,000 people come on the day in August, meaning it was a record turnout.

Over the next few months, I’ll be supporting the supporting the local Queen Alexandra Hospital as it puts together a bid to NHS England to renovate the A&E department – which dates back to 1979.

Having recently visited the hospital, I’ve seen first-hand the excellent work being done by our doctors and nurses and the improvements that are taking place at QA under new chief executive.

As a Government, we have been supporting the NHS both nationally and locally - at QA Hospital that has included 157 more doctors and an extra 145 nurses since 2010.

Yet with an ageing population, and

increasing demand on our health service, the Government has recognised more needs to be spent to safeguard the longterm future of our NHS. So recently it committed to spending an extra £20billion in real terms on the NHS by 2024. That’s more than £600million a week in cash terms.

As this money becomes available, I’ll be keeping up the pressure in Westminster to ensure that QA gets the investment it needs.

How common are Mental Health Problems?

The number of people experiencing mental health problems is growing each year.

• One in six adults is currently experiencing a common mental health problem such as anxiety or depression.

• One in five adults has considered taking their own life at some point.

As a result of these issues many more or us are needing to access Mental Health Services in the community. And, sometimes as an inpatient on a Psychiatric Ward.

NEVER ONE TO TURN DOWN A GLAMOROUS EVENT, MELANIE GETS MUDDY FOR CANCER Danielle Bigwood wanted to take part in Pretty Muddy to raise money for Cancer Research UK in support of a fellow colleague. She put out the alert at work, to which she had a massive response and saw a team of 14 ladies say YES. Melanie, as Head of Medical Negligence, knew she wanted to help raise vital funds as her family has been touched by cancer. Like so many of us have.

Melanie also helps clients who are diagnosed with cancer.

And when they say Pretty Muddy, they don’t lie.

Our ladies were covered head to toe in mud as they battled a 5K run with obstacles. The obstacles included wading through muddy water, crawling through mud on hands and knees under nets, and running through a cascade of water from the Fire Brigade.

Not forgetting their amazing Piri Piri chicken, they could certainly show the likes Nando’s just how it really should be done!

If you really want to be adventurous and sample some of the amazing cuisine that Portugal has to offer, then I would urge you to try one of Porto’s specials, or maybe even a Portuguese soup sandwich!

With flavours so intense, its making my mouth water just thinking about it! Also, Porto’s prices are very reasonable, with the majority of the tapas costing under £5 per dish and the average price of a main costing around £12 it makes for a very reasonably priced meal.

Porto Grill are true to their roots and this really shows… They have done what they do best: Real, flavoursome, traditional Portuguese cuisine, with great service in a fun, casual environment and I can not wait until my next visit! Obrigado!

CRAFT BEERS - Enjoy your Local Ales Down in Devon One of the many pleasures of holidaying in England is being able to sample local beers.

There are over 1,700 breweries in the UK with every county having a considerable number of small breweries, most of which have opened over the last ten years. This summer I visited Devon which has around fifty breweries, many of which are based on farms and other rural locations. Devon is one of the largest counties in England and is almost twice the size of Hampshire. It has a population of over a million. It also has over 30 cider producers but I have confined my research to beer. The oldest breweries in Devon go back to the 1980’s and only eleven of the fifty Devon breweries were founded before 2000. If you are in Devon you should not have to go far in search of a good pint.

The 2018 CAMRA Good Beer Guide list over 120 pubs in Devon which serve excellent cask ale.

Here is just a small selection of Devon beers that I have tasted recently. You should be able to find them in pubs and off-licences in Devon and occasionally as guest ales in pubs and at beer festivals. Most breweries offer a mail order service for their bottled beers.

Otter Session Bitter 3.6% abv Otter Brewery was founded in 1990 and is based in the village of Luppitt which is near Honiton. The brewery is named after the nearby River Otter. The beers are

brewed using their own spring water. Otter also brew Golden, Amber, Strong Ale and a lager. Their beers can be found on draft in many pubs in Devon and the bottled beers can be bought online. This beer pours a copper colour with a malty, biscuit aroma. It is very well balanced with a slightly herbal flavour. A very good example of a traditional English bitter.

Dartmoor Legend Ale 4.4% abv This is the highest brewery in the UK at 1,465 feet above sea level. They began brewing in 1994 and have expanded several times to become the second biggest brewery in Devon. The brewery is located near to the infamous Dartmoor prison. The aroma of the brewing must be tantalising to the prisoners. All barley used is locally grown. They also brew IPA, Ruby and a Jail Ale which I suspect is not available in the prison. Their beers are widely available in Devon and can also be bought online.

Legend is a copper coloured ale with a herbal aroma and a fine balanced taste.

Another very good version of the traditional English bitter.

Hunters Crispy Pig Light Golden Ale 4% abv Hunters started up in 2008 and have a 60 barrel capacity. They are based on a farm at Ipplepen which is near Newton Abbot.

The have their own bottling plant and also bottle beers for other local breweries. They offer a wide range of beers including: Golden, Stout, Amber and a variety of bitters. This beer pours a bright golden colour and has a slightly apple aroma. The taste is of citrus with a touch of apple. The beer is made with local barley and wheat, Boadicea hops and a touch of apple essence. It was originally brewed for a hog roast. The tinge of apple would certainly help the beer to complement roast pork.

Hunter’s Half Bore Session Ale 4% abv This is a modern take on a traditional amber/bitter ale. The beer pours a dark gold colour with a burnt orange aroma.

The taste reminded me of dark marmalade along with the traditional bitter flavour of

English hops. An excellent session ale that would go well with most foods.

Stannary Saison du Soleil 5.2% abv This Tavistock brewery was opened in 2016 and has a 25 barrel capacity. The owners have been influenced by the American craft brewing revolution and they have managed to brew around twenty different beers over the last two years.

These include many US style IPAs along with porters, wheat beers and other less common styles. Their beers are available at several pubs in Tavistock and Exeter. Their Saison is brewed with barley, wheat and Mandarina Bavaria hops. This is a pale gold beer with a yeasty aroma. The beer is quite complex with a mandarin orange flavour mixing with a fresh fruity, yeasty taste.

Stannary Hare Trigger IPA 6.8% abv This is an American style Double IPA flavoured with Amarillo, Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe hops. It has a golden colour with a big citrus nose. This is quite a strong beer but does not overwhelm one in the way that some big US style “hop bombs” can do. This is a beer for sipping slowly and really appreciating the depth of flavour.

Perhaps a little strong to have with a meal but I felt it went well with some cheese.

The Apprentice takes the Helm at Havant Rotary Retired Chief Engineer Chris Roberts took up the role of President of Havant Rotary recently and at his first meeting entertained Havant Rotarians with his exploits at sea. Chris had an Engineering Apprenticeship with Shaw Savill Line, firstly on Cargo ships and then SS Northern Star. She was a Passenger liner taking £10 ticket migrants to Australia via South Africa and returning from Australia and New Zealand across the Pacific, Panama Canal, Caribbean and Atlantic with loads of Young Aussies and Kiwis bound for the Earls Court area of London.

National Insurance for the SelfEmployed The first thing for sole traders to note is that the rates of National Insurance Contributions (NICs) for the self employed are different to those of PAYE employees.

This is partly in recognition of the challenges faced by the self employed in terms of cash flow, as contributions are paid in a lump sum twice a year rather than through the PAYE system and spread over the year.

All employment taxes including the thresholds which affect NICs are reviewed each year in the Treasury’s annual budget process and take effect each 6 April in line with the new tax year.

As of 6 April 2019 the government plans to abolish Class 2 NICs and reform Class 4 NICs to include a new threshold (the Small Profits Limit). It is worth noting that this move has already been delayed one year. More details are expected to be announced in this year’s Autumn Budget.

There are two main classes of NICs which apply to sole trader profits: • Class 2 NICs – for the 2018/19 tax

year you pay Class 2 contributions of £2.95 a week on profits over £6,205. This totals £153.40 for the year.

• Class 4 NICs – you pay 9% on profits between £8,424 and £46,350.

This reduces to 2% for profits over £46,350.

If you earn below the Class 2 threshold you may choose to make voluntary contributions. This will allow you to avoid gaps in your payment history, as these gaps may mean you won’t have enough years of contributions to get your full state pension.

You can usually pay voluntary contributions for the past 6 years.

Currently, thirty-five years’ worth of contributions are required to get a full flat rate state pension of £164.35 a week. You can check your national insurance record online through your Government Gateway account to see your contributions up to the start of the current tax year (6 April 2018).

Havant U3A Year Six Yes it’s the end of year six and Havant U3A continues its momentum with a membership of 260, 35 interest groups and monthly General Meetings open to all members. The latter attracts more than 80 attendees who meet, socialize and listen to a guest speaker, invariably with a film or presentation to enjoy. Members are welcome to bring a visitor for two free visits who will see for themselves what we do before making a decision to join.

So please come along to Bedhampton Community Centre for our AGM and Groups Fair on September 20th at 2.00pm where you can check out what’s on offer and join our friendly band. The annual fee is £15 for the forthcoming year, There are no tests or certificates, just the stipulation that you are not in full time employment and are, in what we refer to as the” third age” in semi or full retirement.

Cyclists Stonehenge Solstice On the 12th October it will be forty years since the formation of the current Havant AC Club in 1978, and we are seeking past and current members to help us celebrate at 7.30pm in the Havant Park Pavilion, where there will be a bar and American supper.

Please pass on this invitation to anyone who was one of the hundreds of members down the years, and are able to bring along photos and their memories.

The invitation extends to all those who were members during the existence of the previous club between 1930 and 1955; there are quite a few around that we know about.

Not so though for the previous club which ran between at least 1889 and 1914 when it disbanded because of the first World War - hence the overall total of ninety years existence.

The only record depicting 1889 is an athletic match programme of that date; no previous information exists, or does it? Is there someone out there who has more information please such as pictures of the past that our archives may not have, or stories to tell? There is an arial photo of Havant Park with a 440 yard running track marked out! What else?

At 4.51 in the morning of 21st June a group of cyclists from our area watched the sunrise through the ancient stones at Stonehenge.

They had cycled through the night to be there, and for some of them not only was this a long ride, of about 50 miles, but it was their first all-night bike ride and carried with it a sense of adventure and challenge.

The ride was organised and led by John Rosbottom, starting from The Spring in Havant at 9.00 in the evening. Eight experienced cyclists who met up with two more at Wickham on the way and a final member at Waltham Chase.

After the sun set, eleven sets of modern bike lights came into their own and provided plenty of illumination to show up any potholes or imperfections in surface of the road.

As this was going to be the equivalent of an all day ride, John had planned a break at Otterbourne where the pub was willing to switch the coffee machine back on at 10.30 pm where the riders produced their own sandwiches - much to the amazement of the regulars.

After the break, the group set off again along quiet local lanes towards Amesbury where they made a detour for another refreshment break. At 2.30 in the morning there are very few roadside places open and John had identified MacDonald’s in Solstice Park as the best (and indeed the only) place suitable, so they took a good refreshment break and well earned rest before setting off at quarter past three for Amesbury itself and on to Stonehenge.

The sky lightened and turned pink to herald the actual coming of dawn until the Sun finally rose to a loud cheer from about 9,500 people who had gathered for the annual event marking the moment when the days stop getting longer and begin the shortening that leads, eventually, to Winter.

After the excitement of seeing the moment of sunrise framed by the stones, and the completion of the challenge, some of the group headed straight back to Portsmouth to complete their 100 mile ride as soon as possible, and the rest rode into

Salisbury where a few caught a train back and the rest caught an early breakfast instead, and then cycled on through the early morning to Hilliers Garden centre for an eleven o'clock refreshment break and the final ride home.

It's not all about eating and drinking as this might suggest, but it's about a long ride, especially an all-night one, watching the Sunrise in a unique historical site in good company, providing both an adventure and an uplifting experience - which uses a lot of calories as well !

Cycling Clinic Q I need to use the road to get around.

Are there any special points I need to watch out for ?

A There are several points buried in your question.

First a bicycle is legally a road vehicle which carries both rights and duties.

The Highway Code makes it clear that we must not cycle on footpaths but also gives advice on using cycle tracks and shared paths as an alternative, although they don't very often go from where we are to where we need to be.

So, we can, and should ride in the road.

It is almost physically impossible to ride in a dead straight line, and the edges of the road often seem to have the most potholes, rubbish, drains etc. to avoid.

If we ride too close to the edge we risk bumping into a raised kerb, or running off the tarmac into grass or a drop off the tarmac, either of which can make the bike unsteady or tumble.

This is not to say that the roads are dangerous, just that we should ride about two feet away from the edge and avoid those hazards if we can.

The Highway Code doesn't only make rules for cyclists but for pedestrians, horse riders, motor cyclists and motorists as well, so when we are cycling on the road we need to follow the same rules.

As long as we know the traffic signs they usually tell us where we can cycle on proper paths, and we should always keep left unless a sign tells us otherwise.

children, older or disabled people and allow plenty of room. It can be alarming, as a pedestrian, to unexpectedly have a silent bicycle swoop past as you walk along.

But its not all about what cyclist should do. Other road users have a duty to us, as well.

Rule 163 of the Code tells motorists to give cyclists and others at least as much room as they would when overtaking a car.

The Police know that close passing is the biggest worry for people taking to their bikes, so many police forces are using a rollout mat showing the recommended distances, to educate drivers found passing too close to cyclists.

The picture shows a cyclist riding correctly about two feet six inches from the kerb ( 0.75M) and the space which motorists should allow when passing, five

feet (1.5M ) That is much more precise than the Code's “... as much room...”.

Even if the policeman was beckoning a motorist on I don't think they would dream of driving any closer than the white car in the picture Most motorists, of course, allow plenty of space, and often hang back behind a cyclist until there is room to pass safely, so provided we keep out of the gutter to stop ourselves falling off and obey the rules we should be safe enough on the road.

Thomas Sanderson donates £3,000 to the Barratt Homes’ warning to children over building site Rowans Hospice Thomas Sanderson - the UK’s leading manufacturer of premium window blinds and shutters – has donated £3,000 to the Rowans Hospice, a charity that supports people living with lifelimiting illnesses, their families and carers in Portsmouth and South East Hampshire.

The donation will be used to support the charity’s Silver Jubilee Appeal, which will raise money to refurbish and extend the Rowans Hospice.

Stay away from building sites during school holidays is the stark warning to local children.

New home developments under construction may look like fun and exciting places to play, but Barratt Homes is warning children they also pose serious dangers.

Managing director Jon Green said: “Building sites are full of potential dangers and, as the school summer holidays are here, it is important to remind children and their parents of the need to stay away from them.

“Youngsters are often on the lookout for somewhere new and exciting to play, but construction sites are not adventure playgrounds.

While our construction teams watch out for youngsters during the day and we secure our sites at night, we also ask parents to make sure they know where their children are during the holiday time.

So today’s subject is “How Does Physiotherapy Help Sciatica?”

Sciatica affects many people including gardeners, sailors, cyclists, tennis players, office workers and builders to name a few, but many other people suffer too.

When the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated, it can cause pain, numbness and a tingling sensation that runs from your lower back down one of your legs to your foot and toes.

However some people suffering from sciatica have no back pain, they could just have buttock or big toe pain.

The pain is usually aggravated by bending, sneezing, coughing, walking, lifting or sitting for a long period of time.

What causes sciatica?

Most commonly the site of origin is within the lower back (lumbar spine) and can be due to a nerve root being impinged, herniated disc or a facet joint. Rarely there are other causes of sciatica such as wear and tear (degenerative) changes of the vertebrae, a fracture, or narrowing of the spinal cord canal (spinal stenosis.)

There are other problems which can lead to sciatic symptoms too: • Pregnancy • Piriformis muscle pain/tightness • After hip surgery or hip pain • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction (pelvis pain) We can provide a thorough assessment of your symptoms and identification of the cause for you pain, ruling out any of the more serious conditions then suggest an appropriate treatment plan.

My back doesn’t hurt?

This is always a hard thing to get your head around, if you have no back pain then why is your back the source of your pain? Sciatica symptoms tend to refer away from the origin of pain but as symptoms are addressed and treatment commenced, the typical pattern of healing involves the symptoms feeling like they are travelling back up the leg towards the centre of the back. This is normal.

Treatment The best treatment for sciatica is hands on joint mobilisations, sciatic nerve mobilisations, massage, combined with exercises and advice.

• Try to keep moving gently throughout the day without increasing your pain.

• Don’t push through pain with activity or stretches as the underlying condition may worsen if you do too much.

Postcode Publications Spinnaker Chorus raising funds for On the evening of Saturday 21st St. Faiths Church, Havant July Spinnaker Chorus performed a sell out show to an overflowing audience at St.Faith’s Church in Havant. The concert entitled ‘Love in Bloom’ took place during the church’s hugely popular Flower Festival. Spinnakerettes alone raised £725, from ticket sales, towards St.Faith’s Big Build Campaign, which provides greatly needed funds for repairs and refurbishment of their many historical buildings and also to benefit their community projects.

The Flower Festival theme this year was ‘Songbook’ and the beautifully adorned church featured stunning floral arrangements representing particular songs, contributed by local businesses and friends of St.Faith’s. Even approaching the church you suddenly became aware of the wonderful scents spilling from within and once inside these filled the air bringing a special ambience to the evening.

In keeping with the colourful, floral surroundings Spinnaker chose to wear a more personalised, individual costume for this event with a pink, white and black theme making us feel and look very bright and summery.

Our concert was a celebration of love across the seasons with songs and a specially penned narrative including poetry with a floral twist. Our song list included True Colours, Africa, My love is like a red, red rose, Lazy Day plus many more. The evening also showcased our talented quartets, Sapphire singing Zing went the strings of my heart and One Degree West, a mixed foursome featuring our very own Musical Director, John Palmer, who sang 7 Bridges Road. We also always encourage small groups within our Chorus and our fabulous ladies in Decadence delighted us all with a perfect performance of Paper Moon.

enjoyed the evening, we are so passionate about our hobby and just love performing. Our audience was fabulous, especially showing their appreciation with multiple standing ovations during the show. And just behind the West Street shop, we also run The Emsworth Brewery, which recently caught the local news because of our response to the national shortage of CO2.

Whilst the use of CO2 in food production is widespread – from meat production, to use as a raising agent for major bakery companies – recent closures of a number of the country’s carbon dioxide producing factories caused a shortage of the commercially produced gas which hit the headlines.

The nation’s attention was caught at World Cup time by the awful prospect of no lager to drink in front of the televised matches! A truly dreadful prospect!

BUT traditional real ales such as the ones we brew in Emsworth provide a very tasty solution to the problem.

That’s because the natural fermentation process used in our beers produce those tongue-tingling bubbles without having to add extra gas.

“The thing about Real Ales” explains Head Brewer Sam Barron-Bolt, “is that the

fermentation process produces the bubbles naturally.

It’s not unknown for people who declare ‘I

don’t drink that real ale stuff; I only drink lager’ at our tasting events or our beer stall at The Emsworth Show on August Bank Holidays, but consent to taste the Wayfarer Golden Ale and who then buy bottles to drink at home as well.

“When they’re lightly chilled on a summer afternoon they’ll bring out the best in any barbecue, party or picnic, says Sam. There may be a shortage of CO2, but there’s really no shortage of Brilliant British Beer. Just go out there and try some!”

Don’t stop Wining Growers’ Champagnes – The smaller producers Jonathan Rogers of VIN Wine Merchants looks at the lesser known producers In the last edition I spoke about the possibility of the decline of Prosecco. This time we are going to look at the other end of the price scale and a drink we all love and have done for a few hundred years.

Champagne has long been regarded as the drink of Kings and Queens, of great British prime ministers and famous Hollywood actors and actresses. When we think of Champagne we think of the great luxurious names such as Moet & Chandon, Veuve Cliquot and Dom Perignon along with Bollinger and Perrier Jouet. There are around 20 of these famous ‘houses’ based in Epernay and Reims who buy only the best grapes from the best vineyards from all over the region. But they only account for around 10% of the vineyards and considering there is around 80,000 acres under vine, what about the rest?

The rest is made up of the growers’, 19,000 small producers, some part timers who are not only growing the grapes and sell to the big houses but increasingly are also making their own wine. The reputation of these smaller producers has grown considerably over the last few years and demand for their Champagne is on the increase, accounting for a quarter of all sales.You can easily pick up a Champagne sometimes around the upper twenties range and guarantee an excellent wine.

Vintage champagne from these smaller producers is also worth a look out with some wines around the low forties and sometimes under.

Where as the Champagne market is still dominated by the big names, you don’t have to spend that sort of money to make sure you get a good quality wine. Check out the smaller names you might save yourself a few pennies.

I have a couple which are particularly good.

Fred’s Food Wild Venison with Blackberries

W

ild venison is back in season, with roe and fallow deer in historically high numbers, it’s the most sustainable meat you can buy. It’s also healthy for you and delicious.

Blackberries are at their seasonal best at the moment and the combination of venison and blackberries make this the perfect early autumn treat. You can use the loin for a spectacular meal, although a haunch steak or even roast would work just as well.

The blackberries add a sweet/sour hit that compliments the venison perfectly. It does mean a spot of foraging, but you can gather them on a five minute stroll from the farm shop. It’s a great activity with the kids providing a perfect excuse for some fresh air.

This venison and blackberry recipe is extremely simple and delicious.

Serves two: • • • • • • •

2 thick venison loin steaks (or haunch steaks) 400g 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 150ml beef stock 2 tbsp redcurrant jelly 1 garlic clove, crushed 85g fresh blackberries

Pan fry the loin steaks in the oil for 4-5 minutes over high heat (or BBQ grill) before turning over and finishing for another 4 minutes before setting aside to rest for 10 minutes.

Add the balsamic vinegar to the pan, followed by the stock, jelly and garlic and deglaze the pan, stirring over high heat. Add the blackberries and cook over medium heat until they soften, then serve over the venison.

On Thursday 12 July 2018, Park Community School was named Secondary School Catering Team of the Year at the Lead Association for Catering in Education Awards (LACA) held at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole.

Every year the LACA Awards for Excellence acknowledge individuals and teams of people who continue to make a real difference in education catering. Good management, strong performance and high achievement is recognised.

‘YES’ Young Explorers Squad is a creation of Park Community School (PCS) to provide a range of experiences, opportunities and activities to encourage students to look outside the box, expand their expectations and gain knowledge in order that they can make informed future life choices.

Many of PCS students are not “worldly wise” and this makes it difficult for students to aspire to something if they are not aware what there is to aspire to.

PCS provide some examples of this: • Students were going to London by coach and one of the comments was as they went through the Hindhead Tunnel, “Is this the channel tunnel?”

• Nine Students recently visited Brighton, and none of the students had ever been there.

• Recent trip to London, only one had been and none had seen Buckingham Palace or Houses of Parliament and knew the importance of them • Students have spent several weeks at Tuppenny Barn in Southbourne, Emsworth, a sustainable living education centre and organic grower.

On the last visit they had a celebratory lunch and one of the students put something on the Head’s plate and said, “Try this it is amazing?” The Head looked down and it was a chunk of cucumber. The student had never had cucumber before • Students taken to Nando’s were amazed at the menu and enjoyed being able to choose and budget for what they could afford • Students were taken to Bishops Printers and saw the process of a Pompey FC programme being designed, printed and produced ready for that Saturday’s fixture • These gems have come from having mixed group of students taking part, whether it be age, academically bright, ability, SEN students, poor attenders, poor situation at home, a real mix taking part at the same time. These show how much we can make a difference to young lives • Students out in Brighton saw many homeless people, one student whose

own situation is not great went and purchased five beef burgers, he ate two of them (which he had planned to do) but then deliberately took the other three to homeless people on the street We walked a group past New Scotland Yard. They did not know what the establishment was. They were however able to speak to the Police Constable outside on patrol and discover its history. Then they saw the eternal flame burning. We must have spent twenty minutes discussing with them what it represented, why it was important and fielded questions as to the technicalities on how it keeps burning We have taken a group to the cinema at Port Solent and it has been about showing them how to book online, what the etiquette is during the film and the importance of knowing how to get there and back home safely In London we had a very small vulnerable student and it was extremely heartwarming when two of the more assertive characters ensured throughout that he was kept safe and had a great time One child on a trip had very little spending money but the group all put their money together and ordered sharing platters, so he was not excluded in any way.

Sustainability of the project PCS hope to make the YES financially sustainable. Postcode Publications has kickstarted funding and it is hoped that this will spur others to provide similar support.

PCS will ensure that all funding received will go as far as possible by

adding the following: • The staff that accompany the children all volunteer their time, with trips taking place out of school hours • PCS mini buses will transport students whenever possible to minimise cost • School cover the costs of travel • Every child must contribute to the cost of entrance fees and food • We try where possible to engage with organisations that can meet our requirements and provide experiences at no or little cost For the students, the experiences that these young people will have will bring a sustainable change for them and expand their knowledge to be able to look further afield and enhance their futures. The more opportunities we can offer the greater the impact on them and their families.

Benefiting PO9 families The clear majority (95%) of PCS students live within the PO9 postcode district and over 50% of students are classed as disadvantaged. Whilst this project is designed to support PCS students we are very willing to invite other schools to take part, or if MUNCH attenders are identified as benefiting in taking part we will expand the offer, where funding allows.

MUNCH has now been running for eighteen months and has secured funding for another 18 months. To provide this we work in partnership with many organisations and volunteers play a key part in the delivery of this.

Postcode Publications and Seaward Properties were key donors to the starting and the financing of MUNCH and it would not be the success it is without this funding. The funding received then encouraged others to match the funding thus ensuring its survival.

PCS’s ‘YES’ Funding Request Postcode Publications has donated £5,000 to enable YES activities to continue for a minimum of eighteen months possibly longer than that, and a wide variety of opportunities will be planned.

Donated funding is ring fenced for the intended project and used in an appropriate cost-effective way for the benefit of young people. PCS will provide monitoring reports throughout and promote donors in all advertising.

A new experience for Positive Pathways Volunteers In June a team of Positive Pathways volunteers and staff attended an activity at Park Community School’s smallholding. The smallholding was the latest venture for Community First’s Positive Pathways volunteers. Positive Pathways is a Community First supported volunteering project helping those who have support needs or lack confidence to take part in team volunteering in the community, gaining a range of skills by carrying out activities such as befriending, gardening, conservation work and painting of community venues.Volunteers also build their social and communication skills by attending tailored training and working as part of a team.

Nigel Pritchard, from Park Community School, met the team at the smallholding and gave them their tasks for the day. Beverley

Palmer from Community First says, “We set to and started clearing paths of weeds, providing water for the animals and, after removing the weeds, for the vegetable beds too. How lucky we are to live in an area where we can stand and hear nothing apart from the birds (and the pigs!) and just breathe. A wonderful morning was had by all, it was hot work and the ground was hard but the results were worth it. We hope to go back another day to continue our work at the smallholding and build the relationship with Park Community School.”

Beverley continues: “Our activities in the last few months have involved gardening at a local residential home along with befriending, otherwise known as ‘chatting, answering quiz questions and eating wonderful cake’! We have also helped a local school with their

conservation area; cleared a section of the Hermitage Stream of Himalayan Balsam; helped to lay a path at a Girl Guides hut; worked with volunteers in Havant Gazebo Garden and had more cake, coffee and chat at Tweed Court.”

Andrew Wiseman, Positive Pathways volunteer who helped out at the

smallholding, said "I was impressed with how well organised and laid out the farm was. It was quite hot, we drank lots of water and I thoroughly enjoyed the day."

Civic Award for City Charity Founder Portsmouth charity worker Rachael Ross, founder of children’s charity Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association, has been awarded the prestigious Portsmouth Civic Award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to education, Down syndrome, charity work and fund-raising for the past fifteen years.

Rachael served as a trustee for Down Syndrome Education International for over five years before co-founding Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association, which provides social opportunities and specialist educational support for children with Down syndrome, as well as training for the NHS, schools and parents. In her role as chairperson, she has worked at forefront of improving education and social opportunities for children with Down syndrome, as well as driving all the charity’s fund-raising initiatives. Over the years, Rachael has also galvanised the community to help raise hundreds of

thousands of pounds for Down syndrome charities.

This isn’t Rachael’s first citation, and her efforts were previously rewarded when

Daubney near Lovedean said, “It was a huge honour to have been recognised in this way for doing something that is so important to me. This award is a tribute to the dedication of our very small but brilliant team at Portsmouth DSA, our wonderful families, and the community whose collective efforts and support have helped to make a real and positive difference to the lives of children with Down syndrome.”

The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Cllr Lee Mason, who presented Rachael with her award said, “Rachael is a truly inspirational individual.

She has utilised her background in education and business to make an outstanding contribution to society, demonstrating her commitment to the city of Portsmouth for former Prime Minister David Cameron many years. MHA Continues Fight Against Loneliness and Isolation MHA Live at Home schemes are a charitable organisation providing social activities in the community for older people to help them remain living independently in their own homes and avoid becoming lonely and isolated.

We recruit volunteers and organise fund-raising to enable us to provide subsidised services such as: coffee mornings, exercise classes, singing for fun and wellbeing, new age kurling, art and craft, lunch clubs, outings, befriending, signposting, holidays and much more.

New location proves a hit for third Older Persons Fair The new central Havant location proved a hit for Alan Mak’s third Community Groups and Older Persons Fair, with the expanded event seeing a record attendance.

More than one thousand residents came to the Meridian Centre and the Beacon, with around sixty exhibitors displaying information about local groups and organisations that support senior citizens.

A number of residents also took the opportunity to become Dementia Friends, with sessions run

by Dementia Friendly Hayling Island.

Havant MP Alan Mak described it as a “superb day”, and thanked all of the residents and exhibitors for supporting the event.

He said: “I was delighted once again by the brilliant turnout, and for all of the support from residents who came to find out more about the excellent services on offer in the community.

I’m committed to offering support for senior citizens and I hope that lots of people were able to join new clubs or learn about some of the services that are available.

“This is a popular fair that is now firmly becoming a popular annual event, and I’m already looking forward to bringing it back next year.”

IT AIN’T ARF HOT MUM!

With this hot summer weather we are having it’s been according to records the driest summer on record! It was Shakespeare who wrote “If music be the food of love, play on” (from act one, scene one from the “Twelfth Night). Some of us will be finding playing on our instruments hard work if your instrument has been affected by the heat this summer.

I have written before about keeping your instrument safe, guitars, ukulele’s, mandolins all wood instruments which includes Clarinet’s, wooden flutes plus with padded instruments like Saxophones, flutes and clarinets, the pads will dry out. So don’t leave it in

the car (cars in this heat are ovens on wheels!!) Don’t store them in lofts, basements, sheds or the garage, they need to be stored somewhere dry at a constant as possible temperature. If stored in doors, choose a cool room away from constant sunlight; or in winter, nowhere near heaters or radiators.

There are lots of care products on the market to help keep your instrument playable also some good repairers to sort out any problems. Enjoy your music, enjoy what summer we have left, remember if you’re hot, feeling the heat (even if you do enjoy the heat) your instrument will not!

TEMPORARY CHANGE OF DIRECTION FOR WEMSFEST

Emsworth-based arts organization is undergoing a temporary change of direction as it celebrates seven years of existence.

Artistic Director Mark Ringwood explained “The availability and affordability of artists coupled with venue availability and constraints on my own personal time have led to us promoting a much longer season of events – primarily concerts – as opposed to a concentrated and more varied festival. Sometimes these things happen but we’ve already taken steps to ensure that the 2019 WemsFest will be as diverse as our previous six festivals.

Despite this temporary setback I think we’ve a fascinating and challenging series of concerts and events to look forward to and it will be a fitting tribute to cofounder Julian Sluggett who passed away last year.”

There are over twenty-four programmed events, with more likely to be added in 2019, and a new venue in Emsworth Sports & Social club which has the second largest audience capacity in the village and is being used for concerts starting with Benji Kirkpatrick’s Excess, on Friday 14 September and continuing with Ruby & The Revelators, Amy Rigby, Ray Cooper, and Ross Ainslie & Ali Hutton’s Symbiosis – and a number of blues artists being lined-up for early in the New Year. The 300-capacity Baptist Church is hosting some of the biggest established names in British folk music – The Strawbs, Pentangle, Oysterband, and Karen Matheson appear there along with exciting new folk artists Imar, and Orcadian female quartet Fara. The atmospheric Chidham Village Hall hosts an extremely diverse series of concerts beginning with kora maestro Diabel Cissokho and his band on 13 October, and going on to include veteran blues duo Dave Kelly and Maggie Bell, Lil’ Jimmy Reed & The Bob Hall Band,The Red Dirt Skinners, and concerts by bluegrass experts John Reischman & The Jaybirds, and Ron Block with Tony Furtado.

The 3rdEmsworth Beer, Cider & Wine Festival is being held at Emsworth Community Centre, and the hardest Quiz in the area will aim to raise funds for Macmillan Support and Hampshire Air Ambulance.

WemsFest’s relationship with cellist Ella Rundle continues when she brings a string trio to St. John’s Church in Westbourne for a programme which includes ‘The Goldberg Variations’ by J S Bach on 27 October.

Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar - Although Greg Russell visited Hambledon as a solo artist two years ago (and went down a storm), he also plays with Ciaran Algar and together they are a formidable duo in the folk world. The pair have gone on to become one of the most sought after acts on the British folk scene. Hayling Island Choir In 1984 a group of enthusiasts led by Frank Ford placed an advertisement inviting those interested in singing for fun to attend an exploratory meeting on 19th February at the Haying Island Community Centre.The invitation was simply “Come sing with joy”.

Some forty-eight people attended and such was the enthusiasm that a steering group was set up.

The inaugural meeting was held on 2nd March with fifty-one members in attendance. The Musical Director was Brian McGrath and the accompanists were Heather Phillips and Joan Howard.

The inaugural concert was given by the choir on 7th November 1984 at St. John’s Church in Rowlands Castle.

The choir was invited to take over the established Christmas Concert at the Community Centre.That 1984 concert was such a success that Hayling Island Choir has made the concert its own ever since.The choir now invites the Blendworth Brass Band to join it in the these Christmas concerts.

The choir now performs three concerts a year including the Christmas Concert.

The choir’s Musical Director David Cain selects from many styles of music. This year

Science Discovery Group the choir has performed ‘The Armed Man’

by Karl Jenkins at the Spring concert, and in the Summer concert a selection of songs from around the world including songs from ‘South Pacific’. Individual choir members sang various solos from ‘Lilli Marleen’ to ‘On Top of the World’.

The choir meets at St. Patrick’s Church hall on Manor Road (PO11 0QU) on Wednesday evenings at 7.30 pm. The Autumn term starts on Wednesday September 5th. New members are made welcome, there are no auditions and new members do not need to read music.

The Choir’s Christmas Concert is on Saturday 8th December at the Hayling Island Community Centre.

Hello from your favourite out and about reporter at the Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre, Hulky Bear.

I hope you have been enjoying the wonderful summer we have been having.

Gosh how hot has it been? Just too hot for me to do too much reporting, I tried to delegate some of my workload but the other out and abouters told me they were too busy catching the sunshine.

Another busy month with lots of new arrivals at The Centre we are full of cute kittens, stunning adult cats, rabbits and a few guinea pigs. Now the holidays are over and we didn’t win the World Cup, if you or anyone you know is thinking of adopting an animal please ring The Centre between 9am-

4pm Monday to Friday.

Some amazing news you may remember pets of the month a few months ago called Jimmy and Jey. Little Jimmy has cerebellum meaning his co-ordination and balance are a bit wobbly and he falls over when walking.

We have found them a fantastic home with a special family who will be able to give them the love they need.

We often have nervous animals here waiting to be adopted they often wait longer than the very friendly ones. They get very sad waiting, I wanted to help bring their confidence out. I thought if staff and our volunteers each had a one very special animal they could give a little extra time to each day this would help them. Little Nate a young stray cat would never come out of his play tunnel when we went to see him. Over the last few months Claire has been sitting with him interacting, you should see Nate now; he loves to play and enjoys company.

Learning about tickles is new but what a change in Nate. I tried to pretend I needed extra handling but the staff say rolling around on my back for tummy tickles doesn’t count. I wonder why?

Ayla is very loving once she gets to know you, a little shy at first. She demands attention on her terms, telling you

once she has had enough fuss. She is very independent and happily plays on her own.

She can be possessive about her toys and we can often hear her talking to her blanket and toys while she plays, even telling them off at times. We would like to find Ayla a quiet and relaxed home with no young children and no other cats; she really doesn’t like them and would definitely chase any others from your garden. Ayla would make a wonderful companion for someone and has so much love to give. Monday 24th September 1845 for 1930 hrs - ‘Five Decades in the Circus - The High Wire Act with No Net ’ Presented by Barry Tempest who was one of the leading aerial display pilots in the world, and has entertaining Airshow crowds for the last five decades.

Barry’s air show career extended from 1958 until 2013 - some 55 years of ‘fun and flying frolics’, in the UK, Europe and the USA. In that period he had over 2,300 public air show performances in a wide variety of different aircraft. In 1963 he co-founded the ‘Barnstormers Flying Circus’ and subsequently flew with the Rothmans Aerobatic team.

Barry says “To enliven his talk, he will introduce one or more of his ‘relations’ who

live in his wardrobe, who assisted him in the last 10 years of his crazy flying displays”.

Sqn Ldr Joe Marsden will be giving two (shorter) presentations this evening - the first about Canberra Target Towing, which provided targets for Ground to Air firing of guns and missiles. The second will be entitled ‘ASTOR’, which will explain how the Airborne Stand Off Radar System and its

ground stations help to control the battlefield, together with explaining the latest assets in use with the British military.

Joe Marsden was in the RAF for 29 years and his RAF career was only cut short when he had a neck injury. During this time he was posted to RAF Scampton, with Vulcan aircraft, served with 617 (Dambuster) Squadron, flew Canberra aircraft and served three tours of the Falklands. In his latter time with the RAF Joe was an Engagement Controller on Bloodhound Surface to Air Missiles and finally an air-to-air Fighter Controller.

by Denise Kelly In my house we have a saying, “ If the sun is out, drop everything and get to the beach!’

While this is realistically not always possible, I have always been of the mindset that we get so few weeks of sunshine in this country, compared to the dark grey days of our long winters, we must make the most of it while it is here.This summer we seem particularly blessed, with temperature soaring beyond anything I can remember in the UK before.

However, previously here in the UK we cannot usually plan things more than a week ahead, because you simply don’t know if the weather will remain the same. I guess that’s why its such a top topic of conversation for us Brits!

However, as soon as temperatures start rising, we get bombarded with health message: beware of the sun! I get that the dangers of skin cancer from unprotected sun exposure are now well known. But that's only half the story.

The health value of sunlight, lauded by the ancient Greeks and Romans, has been largely eclipsed in recent years by concerns about skin cancer.While this is a very real, and increasing, problem - more than 7,000 people are diagnosed with malignant melanoma in the UK each year - evidence is also emerging that moderate amounts of exposure, may be positively healthy.

Sunlight plays a vital role in the production of vitamin D in the body, and it's believed that

IT CAN PROTECT AGAINST CANCER the vitamin may have a role in stopping or slowing the growth of tumor by preventing the overproduction of cells, as well as in boosting bones.Vitamin D is available in some foods, but it is estimated that up to 90 per cent comes from exposure to sunlight.

It’s a very basic rule, but simply put Vitamin D sufficiency is required for optimal health. The conditions with strong evidence for a protective effect of vitamin D include several bone diseases, muscle weakness, more than a dozen types of internal cancers, multiple sclerosis and type-1 diabetes mellitus. One of the first clues to a possible beneficial link between cancer and sunlight was the discovery of large geographic differences in the prevalence of colon cancer deaths in America. The rates in the states in the north were treble those in the south.

Since then, researchers have found that incidences of other cancers also vary according to levels of sunlight.

MS is also more common at low altitudes than at high altitudes, where the intensity of ultraviolet radiation is much stronger.

Apparently higher sun exposure between the ages of 6 and 15 yrs old, and an average or two to three hours or more a day in summer during weekends and holidays more than halved the risk of getting the disease. One theory is that exposure to sunlight boosts the immune system to prevent the damage involved in the disease.

Another is that vitamin D plays a key role in the growth of the developing brain.

The risk of many diseases and disorders can be reduced by sunlight. Epidemiological data indicate a low vitamin D status in tuberculosis, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel diseases, hypertension, and specific types of cancer.

So, while you should be cautious, and not be exposed in direct sunshine for hours all day long, some daily exposure could just be what you need to boost your health. I see so many people in my clinics that are very deficient in minerals and Vitamins, especially Vitamin D, that is affecting their wellbeing.

So while we are lucky enough to be experiencing long sunny days right now, enjoy as much as you can! Skip work, take the day off, buy a paddle board, learn to windsurf, sail or surf! Being outside in the elements makes you feel alive… and life is for thriving, right?

Ancient Farm Welcomes Volunteers Survey reveals valid reasons for not A group of nine willing volunteers from investing in smart home devices Pfizer returned for their annual event volunteering their time to undertake a variety of tasks at Butser Ancient Farm.

The team from Pfizer, a large business based in Havant, took time out of their working day to help at the archaeological site. The team were split into different groups for the day for different roles, and managed to achieve a huge amount.

Pfizer take part in monthly volunteering events around the Havant area organised by Community First, which include conservation, gardening, decorating and helping out at a food bank.Volunteering your time for a local charity or not for profit organisation, makes such a big difference to local organisations.

Maureen Page from Butser Ancient Farm said, “A large group of volunteers from Pfizer came to help us in June. They organised our enormous store of kindling wood for the fires in our houses, they washed down the walls in the corridor of our Roman villa in preparation for redecorating in true Roman style, and they helped us to paint the outside walls of the villa with the first coat. By helping to

organise our wood store, we will now be able to access the roof of our great roundhouse later this month when we will be starting to re-thatch it. They were a lovely group to have here with us and we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for all their hard work.”

Julia a volunteer from Pfizer said, “It has been easy for us to come and volunteer our time today and very fulfilling to be able to see the huge results in such a short time. We will leave today knowing we have made an impact on the project and for the community to enjoy.” Another volunteer Clare said, “We’ve had a brilliant day helping out and it’s been really nice to participate and I will definitely be back.”

Without the support of local businesses, many community groups would struggle.

Paying out for expensive smart home devices is a big ‘no no’ for many, according to a recent survey carried out by David Wilson Homes.

The five star house-builder, which is building new homes across Portsmouth, asked 2,000 people what would most put them off investing in the hi-tech equipment, and almost half (forty per cent) said cost was a significant factor. fifteen per cent were daunted by the idea of setting up, while thirteen per cent said they just didn’t understand the devices. Another fifteen per cent were worried about the possibility of being hacked.

“Smart devices can be expensive, so it’s no surprise that so many of those we asked were put off by cost,” said sales director, Michelle Storer.

“There are bargains to be had, but you have to be very careful when choosing because setting up and security are a very real concern too.

“In fact a spate of security breaches has prompted the UK government to announce guidelines in a bid to make internet-connected services safer to use. Passwords, for example, are paramount.”

As well as stricter guidance on passwords and encryption recommendations, the government’s Security by Design review calls for device manufacturers to make it easier for consumers to delete personal data. It also requests easier installation and maintenance.

“The number of households owning smart devices is on the rise, but the worries raised in our survey are very much reflected in the government’s own review,” added Michelle.“There is much that manufacturers can do to make buying new technology for the home a more attractive prospect - and price, ease-of-use and security are very much top of the list.

“There are of course huge benefits to be had from internet-connected devices, and they truly can have a tremendously positive effect on the lives of those who use them. But they must be safe and easy-to-understand for all.

“The hope is that these new guidelines will give more people the confidence to give them a go in their own homes.”

Victim Support at The Plaza

The Victim Care service has moved into Havant Borough Council’s Public Service Plaza, to provide victims of crime with more choice about how they can access support.

The move has enabled its team to work closely with public service partners that are already located within the Plaza such as Citizen’s Advice, the Havant Safer Neighbourhood Team, and Hampshire County Council.

Latest action from Horizon After the horrendous rain and gales at the weekend it was a pleasant surprise to enjoy a warm sunny day at Hambrook for Round 17 on Tuesday. 31st July.

Twelve members attended the latest Carp Only match and there were indeed carp for only six of those members and numerous lost or missed fish for most.

After only five minutes, first to have a run was Derek. It came off but it was encouraging and an hour or so later he landed a decent 6lbs 8oz common/koi hybrid on method feeder and corn which was enough for runner up on the day. Then Sue had the first of her three carp to 7lbs 6ozs for a match winning 17lbs 10ozs. Aaron landed two smaller carp for 4th place while Mike Waite’s late in the day 5lbs 14ozs common gave him 3rd spot. Ron Dodd was the only other member to land a carp, this time a 4lb mirror.

Again, Dave drew the end swim controlling the willow/island area and had plenty of action with several runs where fish bent his hook or hook lengths gave away. It was a busy but unproductive day for Dave.

Alan also suffered with at least three fish taking him into roots around one of the islands, one of the perils of clipping up and being able to cast within a foot or so of an island. Even match winner Sue suffered lost fish along with Aaron and Mike.

Elsewhere there were silvers to be had with Jan enjoying a fish a cast to bag 5lbs 10ozs of silvers, mostly perch. Derek landed a lovely 6lbs 8ozs bream on 8mm robin red pellet, see pic on website

Most unexpected catch of the day was a young coot which swam into Jack’s line and got its foot tangled. Fortunately the coot was not hooked and Jack reeled in and with the bird safely in his landing net, untangled the line from its leg and safely returned it to the water, no harm done.

Jack’s experience of handling his racing pigeons came in handy on this occasion.

A cascade of over 16,000 handmade poppies to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War and to honour all service men and women has been created by residents on Hayling Island and surrounding areas, and even far flung corners of the world.The cascade along with poppy tributes in the Church and an exhibition compiled by Hayling U3A about life on the island during World War 1 will be on display from 8th October 2018 until 12th November at St Peter’s Church, Northney, Hayling Island, PO11 0RT from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday.

The plan to create the poppy cascade “For the Fallen” was a project first started by the Northney Textile Crafts Group on Hayling Island coincided with discussions about how the church were going to commemorate Remembrance Sunday in 2018.Within days handcrafted poppies came flooding in and, following a number of Poppythons where people came along and made poppies or helped to attach the poppies to the cascade,

by July almost 17,000 had been donated, some with a label dedicating a poppy to someone who had died in conflict.

Alyson Griffin, a member of the Northney Textile Crafts Group, who first thought about the project having seen a cascade of knitted poppies hanging from a church wall in

Scotland in November last year, said, “It was a very moving display in Scotland and I thought that Hayling could match such a dedication For The Fallen.The exhibition seeks to do equal justice to those who died and those lived through the one of the most inhuman conflicts in history.

The “School of Musketry”, “The VAD Hospital”, “The Contribution of Hayling Women”, “Food Production on the Island” and Hayling Schooling” all feature on the information boards as does a feature on Medals won by Islanders.We look forward to seeing visitors later in the year to view the poppies, see the exhibition and poppy tributes and join us for a cup of tea or coffee.” The Poppy Cascade, poppy tributes and Exhibition is open to all, school groups can visit on request

Venison mince is a great alternative to beef for burgers, bolognaise or cottage pie (you can hardly taste the difference with the mince), while the diced is excellent for stews and casseroles. The haunch can be roasted whole or cut into steaks, or even butterflied and marinated for the BBQ. The venison season has started up again and there are several reasons why you should be sitting down to enjoy a meal or two of this delicious wild game.

With historically high populations of both fallow and roe deer across the South Downs, as well as increasing numbers of muntjac, the deer population needs to be controlled. With no natural predators in the UK, large numbers of deer can devastate woodland, eating seedlings and coppice regrowth, and stripping bark from larger trees which hugely impacts on forest regeneration. By feeding on the scrub layer, they deprive woodland birds of their habitat, and they also impact on farmer’s crops and gardens.

The silver lining is that we have a steady supply of wild deer that has been feeding on the tastiest woodland forage, resulting in a red meat that is healthy, low in fat, high in protein, rich in minerals and absolutely delicious.
