SOUTH STREET WOODLAND GLADE COMMUNITY PROJECT The Postcode Publications proposal to create an educational Woodland Trail in the wooded area of Bosmere School in South Street, Havant has moved a step closer to becoming reality.

Following Postcode Publications commissioning of a well known tree expert Bernie Harverson to survey the trees and produce a report and recommendations for either their preservation management, removal of dead dying or diseased specimens, clearance of pervasive species and undergrowth, plans can progress.

This work will now inform design of the proposal to provide for creation of an educational pathway and teaching stations inspired by Jennie Leadbeater of the

Martin Critchley architectural practice at The Old Brewery, Twittens Way, Havant.

The Glade will provide a much enhanced public view of the west side of South Street, and develop an area in which school children can enjoy and learn from planting and the seasons as species flower in turn to provide constant change.

The Glade will also provide planned habitat provision for appropriate flowering species as advised by local experts.

Blue Flag Hayling Hayling Island again enjoys the Blue Flag quality award for 2018 for the twentyseventh consecutive year!

The prestigious Blue Flag recognises clean and safe stretches of coastline that promote environmental education and offer

excellent visitor facilities.

The stretch of Hayling’s beach which runs from the fun fair to the border of the golf club has been awarded the flag by the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ campaign.

The criteria to qualify for a Blue Flag

include the provision of first aid facilities, clean toilets, recycling facilities and access for disabled visitors. The water is continuously tested during the summer season to check that it meets the strict bathing water quality standards.

Fourth Organised Beach Clean Up The Final Straw Solent's 4th organised Beach Clean at The Ferry Boat Inn, Hayling Island in Association with Surfers Against Sewage One hundred and eight volunteers collected over a hundred bags of litter and micro-plastics The Final Straw Solent was thrilled to welcome a hundred and eight amazing volunteers from all areas of the Solent to their fourth big beach clean at the Ferry Boat Inn, Hayling Island on Friday, 4th May. Recent reports had suggested that the area had high levels of micro-plastic, small fragments and pieces of plastic less than 5mm long that are often the result of large pieces of plastic that have been broken up.

The campaign also expected to see lots of ‘Nurdles’ - tiny bits of plastic, about the size of a lentil, that are used in the manufacture of plastic items and get washed out of factories into sewers. Collecting these tiny pieces of plastic is important work, but it is not an easy task.

The volunteers spread out with their purple bin bags and started collecting as much of the plastic as they could. It was an inspiring sight, just having people together walking the beach and collecting rubbish was fantastic and great for raising awareness of the issue. It became apparent early on that collecting all these tiny pieces by hand was not going to make a

significant difference to this area due to the vast amounts of nurdles present in the seaweed and sand. After consulting with David Jones, founder of Just One Ocean and photographer and advisor to the critically acclaimed film 'A Plastic Ocean', the team decided that the best way to remove the nurdles was start shovelling. It was back-breaking work, but the only way to remove the huge amounts of micro-plastic and nurdles in some areas. Bag after bag was collected and it still was heart-breaking how much was left behind. In the end over 100 bags of rubbish were collected off this beautiful beach. Over 100 bags of litter and micro plastics that are safely removed and can not cause any damage to our local wildlife. In fact, there were so many bags that the amazing team at Norse SE had to do two runs to remove them all!

And re-cycling’s not the answer either, here in the UK an estimated 800 plastic bottles a MINUTE are either ending up in landfill or as litter, which will too often make its way into our waterways and out to sea. We can all help with this by purchasing a re-usable water bottle.

• INVEST IN A REUSABLE COFFEE CUP -In the UK, we use and dispose of seven MILLION coffee cups a day. Only 1% are recycled! Get yourself a good reusable cup, if you are a regular ‘take-out

coffee’ person it will make a big difference.

Put simply, if it’s plastic or wrapped in plastic, think about viable alternatives. Refuse that straw and any other unnecessary plastic, spread the word and help save our planet!

We hope that people will follow this campaign with earnest and join us for our next organised beach cleans, and that it will have a positive impact on our environment and change peoples’ views on their consumption of single-use plastic.

Alan Mak MP This year the NHS celebrates its 70th anniversary, and as we look ahead to the future at this historic milestone we should be looking at how technology can improve services for patients.

That’s the argument I made in a report that was published by leading think-tank the Centre for Policy Studies in May, which was endorsed by the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

Run by Sheila Morris and her dedicated team, they have planted a number of delightful flowers all around Emsworth, which have proved popular with residents and even bring in visitors from across the area.

Having seen them in action over the last few years, and seeing the difference their efforts are making to the town, I donated £500 to pay for a new planter outside the

Emsworth Surgery in the town centre.

Groups such as Emsworth in Bloom, is one of the reasons why this year I’m planning to run an expanded Community Groups and Older Persons Information Fair in the Havant Meridian Centre.

Building on the success of the Older Persons Fair on Hayling Island for the last two years, this event, taking place on Friday 3 August between 10am and 2pm, will be the perfect opportunity to showcase the best community groups in the constituency.

Community First and Community Action Fareham join forces

Community First and Community Action Fareham completed their merger on 1st April 2018. The new organisation will continue to be known as Community First

and now provides services and support to the community and voluntary sector across East Hampshire, Fareham, Havant and Winchester and also delivers essential community transport services in Basingstoke & Deane and Gosport.

Whilst it remains a challenging time for many charities, this merger demonstrates a commitment to serving and supporting local communities enabling the organisation to consolidate its management and back office functions whilst retaining and investing in its local delivery teams. There are no changes to services but there are clear opportunities to share expertise and innovation across a wider part of Hampshire. The new organisation will expand its training offer to

the sector, with a new and exciting apprenticeship programme building leadership and management skills in charities; seek to expand the successful Home Help services in Fareham and other health and well-being services work with Hampshire County Council to provide innovative and effective solutions to maintaining community transport services.

The merger was driven by a desire to improve the impact and reach of the voluntary and community sector. The new organisation will continue to maintain close links with local groups and be responsive to their needs, whilst also looking outwards to ensure that new funding opportunities are pursued to the benefit of local communities.

This is particularly important in the context of rapidly changing health services.

Community First is already engaging and influencing new models of care and as a larger, strategic organisation has the ability to build long term partnerships and unlock funding to make social prescribing an inherent part of these new models of care.

What delays in cancer diagnosis & treatment can mean Cancer has been in the news a lot lately: 1. Patients with cancer symptoms are not being referred quickly enough.

2. Breast cancer screening failures saw 450,000 women not sent letters.

3. Tessa Jowell’s death from brain cancer.

Quite simply, delays in cancer diagnosis means delays in treatment. It can also mean shortened life expectancies, more invasive treatments and even death.

Melanie Lidstone Land, head of Medical Negligence at Swain & Co Solicitors, was really affected by the breast cancer screening failure. Here she tells us why: “My mother died of breast cancer. It was very quick. She never got to see me get married. She never held my children in her arms.

My aunt is in remission from breast cancer.

You cannot fail to see that there is a family history. And of course, I am hyper vigilant and constantly worrying.

I approached my GP to see if I could

access early screening as I believe that my family history supports this. But, the NHS does not agree. Like you, I have to wait until I am fifty.

So we trust in the NHS with all their statistics, there computer systems, and their screening programmes.

But what if the system fails?

You’re waiting for the letter to drop through your door, relying on the system telling you when the time is right – only, it never comes. Forty-five thousand women were not sent screening letters.

What if you are one of those, and you have breast cancer now?

You will have questions you need answering, you will be angry, and you will think ‘what if’.

If you have lost a loved one, a wife, a mother, a sister, a daughter, you will be feeling this too. And, you will want answers.

We hear over and again how the government has a Committee for this and a Think Tank for that.

• Who was reviewing the statistics?

• Who was monitoring the system?

• What is being done to prevent this happening again not just with breast cancer but with other early detection and screening initiatives?

The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has questioned why a fall in the number of women getting screened did not raise any alarms. Why was the IT mistake not spotted earlier?

CRAFT BEERS - It’s in the Can!

You may well have noticed that more and more of your favourite craft beers are now available in cans. This is nothing new as canning is an early C19 invention originally developed to enable the military to have supplies of food which would not go off.

Traditionally beer has been bottled since the C17 and has been available in cans since the 1930’s. Ring pulls were invented in the early 1960’s and the stay tab, which is not discarded when the can is opened, came into use in the 1970’s. However canned beer has had a certain stigma and for a long time cans tended to be used for the cheaper types of lagers. The migration from bottles to cans began in the USA in 2002 and now many British craft brewers offer their brews in cans.

There are many reasons why brewers are starting to can beer. Firstly, a can is much lighter than a bottle which makes shipping costs much cheaper. This is a major factor if you are exporting beer or sending it all around the UK. Secondly, aluminium cans are easy to recycle and have considerable scrap value. A tonne of aluminium is worth £250 whereas a tonne of mixed glass (cullet) is only £12. Thirdly, cans completely protect beer from being “light struck”, a phenomena which can create off flavours in beer which has been in direct contact with sunlight. This is why most beer bottles are brown as dark colours are less likely to let in light as opposed to clear or green bottles.

Fourthly, cans are light to carry home from the shops and are less likely to damage if dropped. They are also easier to take out with you. Fifthly, discarded cans don’t cause any damage whereas broken glass is dangerous. Cans can also be

put in household recycling bins whereas bottles have to be taken to bottle banks.

Finally many brewers are taking advantage of the surface area of a can to commission bold artworks to decorate their brews.

Many beers come in very striking abstract multi-coloured cans which really stand out on the shelves.

The above arguments should convince most brewers to adopt canning. However there are a few disadvantages. Firstly, a canning line is very expensive to set up and represents a big investment for a brewery.

Small breweries who do not have the finance or space can sub-contract canning to a larger brewery and there are even mobile canning contractors who will visit your micro-brewery. Many very small breweries still bottle beer by hand and probably will continue to do so. Secondly, cans are still associated with cheap bargain beers whilst bottles are seen as a sign of tradition and quality. Thirdly, cans warm up more quickly than bottles although they do chill down much faster. Fourthly, cans tend to be available in a limited range of sizes. In the UK almost all canned craft beer seems to

come in 330 ml cans whereas beer bottles come in 330 ml and 500 ml sizes and sometimes even 568 ml (1 pint). There is also a myth that cans may impart a metallic taste to beer. This may have been the case many years ago but today cans are lined with a very thin epoxy layer which keeps the liquid from being in direct contact with the metal. Another minor point is that once a can has been opened it cannot be re-sealed whereas a bottle can be closed. This may mean that bottling is a better option for very strong beers such as barley wines and imperial stouts.

As I was putting this article together a sample of some US canned craft beers arrived and I thought it would be interesting to include my tasting notes with this article on canning. The beers were brewed by Six Point Brewery, Brooklyn, New York and are imported into the UK by Heathwick. Six Point started in 2004 and the name comes from their symbol, the ancient six pointed brewers star. Their motto is “Beer is Culture”, well who would argue with that?

The beers I am reviewing below are Six Points core offering but they also brew a wide variety of other styles of beer including Kolsch, Porter, Gose and Barrel aged Rye. Six Point The Crisp Pilsner 5.4% abv.

This beer is made with German Tettnang and Hallertau hops and Cargill Pilsner malt.

It pours a golden colour and has a biscuit aroma. This beer certainly lives up to its name with a crisp, dry flavour which is far removed from the mass market industrial lagers. This is a very fine beer which is neither sour nor bland. I think you could drink this with most meals or on its own.

Six Point Sweet Action Ale. 5% abv.

This beer pours a copper colour, has a peachy nose and is full of flavour with tangerine and lemon predominant. The beer

is made with barley, wheat, and flavoured with El Dorado and Simcoe hops. Sweet Action refers to a short-lived women’s magazine which was published in Brooklyn.

This is an easy drinking beer which would go well with Asian food.

Six Point Bengali IPA 6.6% abv.

This is a big beer in terms of flavour and strength. Personally I find beers over 6% abv. a bit heavy going, especially with a meal.

The beer has a citrusy, grapefruit aroma and a massive, intensely citrus taste, a bit like undiluted orange squash. In the US these “hop bombs” are very popular but the very strong flavours may not be to everyone’s taste.

Six Point Resin Indian Imperial Indian Pale Ale (IIPA) 9.1% abv.

First, there was India Pale Ale, then there were stronger versions which were known as Double IPA (DIPAs) and now we have the Imperial (very strong) India Pale Ale (IIPA).

One of the things I really like about beer is that it is constantly evolving and new styles are always cropping up. I approached this beer with considerable trepidation but was pleasantly surprised. This golden coloured beer with its lemon peel aroma is actually quite a pleasant drink to sip slowly, perhaps at the end of a meal or as a nightcap. It has a dry, piney, resinous flavour. The beer is rated at 103 IBU (International Bittering Units) Lagers will have 10-20 IBU whilst a stout may be around 50 IBU. 103 IBU is probably the most bitter that a beer can be and still remain drinkable.

RSPB and Barratt extend partnership to give nature a home

A unique partnership between the RSPB and Barratt Homes has been renewed and extended for another three years. The partnership aims to deliver more wildlife friendly housing across the Portsmouth region, helping to give nature a home.

Barratt and the RSPB will work together to boost biodiversity and promote wildlife.

Through such initiatives as hedgehog highways, wild bee friendly planting and swift

bricks, the aim of the partnership is to help all forms of wildlife and nature on new housing developments.

Over the last 50 years 56% of species have declined while 15% are at risk of disappearing from our shores altogether.

With the country’s wildlife continuing to struggle, the ground-breaking partnership between Europe’s largest nature conservation charity and the country’s largest house-builder is setting the benchmark for nature friendly homes.

The first three years of the partnership have been a resounding success with both organisations working together to agree best practice on what are the best plants and shrubs to use in gardens, the best times in the year to survey local species and how to make good use of existing nature features on new developments. In addition the partnership is helping home owners by offering guidance and advice on how to help nature thrive.

Welcoming the renewal, Mike Clarke, chief executive of the RSPB, said: “The wildlife we see and hear where we live is important.

Having birds, butterflies, bees, hedgehogs and other visitors in our gardens makes us feel good about where we live as well as improving our own sense of well-being.

Unfortunately our natural world is in trouble, so it is vital that we look at how construction can be sympathetic to nature and how future communities can welcome wildlife.

“For three years the RSPB and Barratt Homes have been working together to create spaces for nature and wildlife, and I am pleased that we will be continuing our partnership for another three years, leading to more new neighbourhoods being designed with nature in mind.”

The partnership has received particular praise for designing an innovative new swift brick to support the iconic birds with nesting sites in new homes.

Other awards for the partnership over the last three years have included a What House silver award for best partnership scheme, a BIG biodiversity challenge award for show-home garden designs and a prestigious RSPCA animal hero award.

Spirit-of-the-South, ladies harmony chorus Spirit-of-the-South, a Hampshire based ladies harmony chorus, enjoyed entertaining the ladies of the Hollybourne WI ( also known as the Hollybourne Honeybees.) It was a very busy evening, and they made us welcome, even to the point of putting us in the spotlight, quite literally. Nice though it was, we had to request that the lights be lowered so that we could actually see our new MD, JosieKelly Hiscott.

Before singing songs from our repertoire, Gillian Rose-Smith explained how four part harmony comes together, by starting a warm-up song called Gee It's Good To See Ya. One by one the tenor, lead, bass and baritone sections are brought in, and they blend. All clever stuff. Songs that are frequently requested are from the shows. Hallelujah, from Les Miserables, Can you feel the love, from The Lion King and anything by Elvis is always a hit.

As this year is the 100th Anniversary of the Suffragettes, we included two songs by way of celebration. Rise Up Women, sung to the tune of John Browns Body, and The Women's Battle Song, sung to the tune of Onward Christian Soldiers, led by Joy Lloyd.

Everyone joined in and sang with great gusto. As always, it was a pleasure to share our wonderful hobby with others.

We rehearse every Tuesday evening at Havant Methodist Church, Havant, Hants, from 7-30 until 10pm.

Cricket season under-way with anniversary match From Dave Gorvin, Hayling Island Cricket Club

On Saturday 28th April, the cricket season got underway with two friendly matches against Portsmouth & Southsea.

This occasion marked the forty-fifth anniversary of the Hampshire cricket league and was a re-enactment of the first ever league game that took place in 1973. The cricket club were also celebrating the opening of the impressive new clubhouse in Hayling community centre.

The weather was kind enough for us to get full games in. The first team batted in difficult conditions and were able to put a score of 95 on the board, Dave Gorvin top scoring with 30. In reply, Portsmouth and Southsea found it difficult to chase down the runs with some impressive bowling from the Hayling unit. Jason Longhurst was the pick of the bowlers as Hayling took the game to a close finish.

In the second team match, Hayling bowled first and restricted Portsmouth and

Southsea to 120, long-serving player Andy Shaygen managed to get three wickets and was well supported by the rest of the Hayling bowling attack. Hayling set a good platform with Alex Johnson and new player Rob Gamlin amongst the runs, however they fell short of the target and eventually lost by

twenty runs.

With league matches starting in May, prospects look bright across the club. Home matches are taking place on alternate Saturdays (16th June, 30th June), all support is greatly received.

The cricket season is now in full swing with all teams in action on a weekly basis.

There have been some very positive performances by both teams and individuals over the opening few games, with wins, losses and even a tied match!

The first team recorded their first win of the season against Bramshaw away. Hayling batted first, scoring 244 thanks largely to opening batsman and formidable all-rounder Mike Hallett. He was duly supported by Mike Lever as they put on over 100 for the opening partnership.The rest of the top order contributed well and the innings finished with some quick runs from Stu Barnard (38 runs) and Dave Gorvin (31 runs). Hayling managed

to hold their nerve to win by 11 runs. Mike Hallett setting the tone again to claim four wickets, including the decisive final wicket.

On the same day, the second team also got their first win of the season against Old Netley and Highfield.The opening partnership of Jamie Nottage and club secretary Alex ‘Jtrain’ Johnson proved to be extremely fruitful as they put on over 150 runs. Jamie top scored with 94 and Alex played the supporting role with 54 runs. Dramatic scenes occurred when Hayling were fielding, as the ever-green club chairman, Jim ‘chief’ Lever took 5 wickets and only conceded 1 run. Hayling capped off a highly successful display by celebrating long into the night.

A tied match is a rare occurrence in cricket, however Hayling park was the scene of Hayling’s only tied match in recent years.

Alex Johnson again provided the bulk of Hayling’s runs when he scored 71 not out as Hayling batted first. Jamie Nottage also scored a well made 50 runs, as Hayling posted 178,.

The main drama from the match occurred in the last over of the day when Waterlooville, Hayling’s opponents on the day, needed nine runs for victory. Jamie Nottage was asked to bowl the final over which ended with Waterlooville needed two runs to win. A well aimed yorker and some smart fielding from the Hayling skipper (Tony Watton) ensured that Waterlooville could only score one run.

The outcome was a tied match and handshakes all around.

The midweek team have started the season well, with one convincing win and a narrow defeat against Portsmouth and Southsea.

Colts sessions are proving very popular with over 20 children regularly attending each week. Any child from school year reception to year six are invited to attend and information can be found on the facebook page.

Emsworth Rambling Club Emsworth Rambling Club was formed nearly half a century ago by two keen walkers, Elsie and Bob Smith. Today it remains an unaffiliated local club with members from Hampshire and West Sussex. This year we are celebrating our 45th anniversary.

Our main aim is to enjoy walking in our beautiful countryside, taking time to appreciate all that it offers.

Over the years the Club members have also enjoyed holidays in the UK as well as mainland Europe. The Cotswolds, Exmoor and other area of the West Country have been explored.

Abroad, Italy, Cyprus and Austria have been favourites, especially Snowshoeing in Austria which a small group experienced under the auspices of Bath & West Country Walks.

In recent years some members have tackled long-distance walks such as The South Downs Way, which we often traverse in small chunks on our regular local walks.

Next was Offa’s Dyke, done in three stages, staying at B&Bs along the way with our luggage being transported for us. This was followed by The West Highland Way, Circumnavigating the Isle of Anglesey and The Ridgeway.

Other recognised paths such as the Clarendon Way, The Wayfarers Way and The LipChis Way have been walked Social events have always been a feature of the club - Skittles; Fish Suppers; Summer BBQ; and an Annual Dinner are some examples. These events enable members who are no longer able to join the walks to keep in touch.

Regular walks now take place on Thursdays and Sundays.

On Thursdays our walks are around 4/5 miles and we aim to return to Emsworth by 1pm.On these walks we have started our walks locally such as Hayling Island, Prinsted, Walderton, Stoughton and Stansted as well as from places as far afield as Portchester,

East Meon, Slindon, Cocking, Hunston and Whiteways.

On Sundays we usually walk 7 /8 miles, taking a picnic lunch. In addition to the local area we have walked in the New Forest, The Isle of Wight and the Amberley/Arundel

areas.

AFC Prospect Farm Rangers One Team One Goal

After the demise of the Havant Sunday Football league in 2015 a small committee was set up and it was decided that it would be good to form a new club based in the Havant area.

A group of players consisting of friends, friends of friends and other players from clubs that were disbanding were invited along to some training sessions.

AFC Prospect Farm Rangers (PFR) was formed and affiliated to Hampshire FA and the City of Portsmouth Sunday Football League in the spring of 2016.

Charter Standard status was also achieved by the club during its formation.

As the majority of club players and committee are based in the West Leigh / Havant area the club name was based upon the history of the area: Prospect Farm - the farmhouse has a date of 1776 - one of the oldest buildings in the area. It remains on the corner of Prospect Lane and Wakefords Way. Prior to 1865 Prospect Farm was known as Leigh Farm. It was incorporated into the Leigh Park estate under William Stone in 1863. By the

sale in 1936 it comprised 134 acres.

During the clubs first season in the City of Portsmouth Sunday Football League, division five, the club cemented a very creditable mid-table finish. The success gained during this first season then laid the foundation for further club success in the following season 2017-2018 in which the club, with the same squad of players, gained promotion by winning the division five title.

AFC Prospect Farm Rangers will be looking to gain further success on the field of play during the 2018-2019 season again with the same squad of players.

Our club is partially self-sufficient and covers all affiliation costs, playing fees and training fees through player subscriptions.

However, all kit and training equipment is purchased through community funding and sports association grants.

Community funding and grants are becoming more difficult to source in recent years but these forms of funding are vital to the continuation and expansion of clubs.

Therefore we as a club are now looking to find a local business or company to sponsor AFC Prospect Farm Rangers on a long term basis.

Although the club is very proud of its early success we are also more proud of what we have achieved of the field of play, helping others through charity events both locally and worldwide.

11-A-Side Games: Havant academy have kindly agreed to let us use their facilities for a number of games. Last year we only played one to see how it went. This year we are holding charity based 2 hour games on: Sunday 1st July Sunday 15th July Saturday 28th July Sunday 29th July Sunday 5th August Saturday 11th August Sunday 12th August Sunday 19th August We are also planning for the team to have a weekend in Bournemouth on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th July to play two games against a Bournemouth based Sunday football club.

Q Do I need to wear a helmet when I'm riding my bike?

I see a lot of people who do, and a lot who don't, so I don't know what is best.

A The short answer is that the law in the UK doesn't require you to wear a helmet, but as you have noticed, it isn't that simple.

If you fall off a bike at 4 mph it's about the same as tripping over a pavement.Your head starts at about the same height, and of course, ends on the floor.We don't wear helmets for walking and running, and after you have learnt to ride a bike the risk of falling is not very different.

Helmets are designed to soften the blow and shield the brain from some of the shock if

you do, actually bang your head - and that must be a good idea, particularly with children whose bones are less developed, and older folk whose bones may have become a bit brittle.

But it is the people in between who are more likely to be going fast, or riding 'off road' where

concentration on a dodgy surface can mean they fail to spot a low branch of a tree !

So, helmets started to be compulsory for cycle racing (like the Tour de France) and for off road events. Many schools who allow pupils to cycle to school also require the youngsters to use helmets.

The design of cycle helmets means they are made of a special thick foam to cushion any impact, but a side benefit is that because this foam is about an inch thick it can protect your face against gravel rash a bit if you end up sliding along the ground.

It seems obvious, then, that there should be nothing to debate.

The law has to consider wider issues, however, and for example in Australia, when they made cycle helmets compulsory it made many people think that it meant that cycling

must be dangerous, so the number of people cycling reduced.

This lack of exercise was bad for the nation's health and although a few cycling injuries were avoided, the adverse effects of inactivity (heart problems, diabetes etc.) increased. It is your decision.

People learning to cycle and inexperienced cyclists are a bit less stable: • Children can be a bit haphazard, and are less aware of risk than adults; • Parents and Grandparents going out with children should set an example; • Some groups or organised rides may require participants to wear a helmet.

New Community Club for Waterlooville A new club has been formed to help people in the Waterlooville community to get more experience of cycling on quiet roads as far as possible in their own area.

The members will meet on Monday evenings in June and July at one of several start points in and around Waterlooville.

Experienced Ride Leaders will encourage riders to explore easily cycled routes in the area, and newcomers will get the opportunity to meet other cyclists in groups of up to a dozen, each ride will last about an hour and a half, will be less than twenty miles, and avoid any steep hills.

Here on the edge of the South Downs there is a lot of beautiful scenery to be discovered, riding at a pace that allows everyone to see and enjoy their surroundings.

Everyone will be welcome:

• Inexperience doesn't matter, if you haven't ridden for a long time or only just started, you'll be just as welcome.

• Children under sixteen are welcome as long as they are accompanied by a parent or authorised adult. Sixteen to eighteen year olds will need to have written authority from their parents.

• It doesn't matter what type of bike you ride as long as it is safe to ride, nor what sort of clothes you wear.

On a bike, the scenery is constantly changing – not like in a gym!

Twenty miles may seem like a huge distance but as they ride more, all riders will find their confidence on the bike increases.

Not only being able to handle the bike better, but feeling comfortable on the bike itself and also their position on the road and in traffic.

Just think how many places you could get to on your bike in ten miles each way!

There is no charge to go on any of these rides and Cycling UK provides insurance for each rider's first three rides as long as they have completed a short form to register.

After three rides, however, if you want to continue you should join and get permanent cover and all the other benefits of membership.

The all-important details: Start time : 6:45 pm for 7:00 Rides are scheduled for 18th June, 25th June, 2nd and 9th July.

Havant & Waterlooville FC Promoted to the Vanarama National League

When their 2017/18 season in the Vanarama National League South ended on Saturday 28 April with a 3-2 win against Concord at the Westleigh, the Hawks had gained promotion for second year in succession.

In two dramatic years the Hawks had gone from dismay and disaster to euphoria and joy.

This time last year I reported Hawks return to the Vanarama National League South after just one season in the Ryman Premier League having been relegated at the end of the 2016/17 season.

One year on, following a very tense end to an exciting 2017/18 season, the Hawks have earned a second successive and hard-fought promotion. This time to the Vanarama National League, the pinnacle of non-league football and Hawks highest ever league status. It places them within one step of membership of the English Football League and just two divisions behind the team up the road!

Postcode Publications sports correspondent Tim Randall has spoken exclusively to Trevor Brock, the Hawks Club Secretary and senior board member, about the club’s promotion next season to the Vanarama National League, the top non-league division in England.

Mr. Brock said “It has long been our aim to reach the Vanarama National League.The relegation to the Ryman Premier League at the end of the 2015/16 season shook us. It was a big set-back.We had wanted to do well that season

and although we had the basis of good quality local players we decided to recruit some from further afield.That resulted in unrest and disharmony in the dressing room and ultimately relegation.

“Having been relegated, the Club stood by Lee (Bradbury). Lee is ambitious and has managed in the English Football League.Together we reviewed everything about the club with the aim of restoring our speciality - team spirit built on good quality local players and a happy dressing room.

“For the 2016/17season we retained our best local players and recruited others to strengthen the squad.The dressing room harmony was restored. Lee and his management team continued to receive our full support and we regained membership of the Vanarama National League South at the first attempt.

“We started the 2017/18 season aiming to consolidate ourselves back in the Vanarama National League South and give existing players a chance. Our speciality is team spirit. Everyone at the Club responded.The team is all together and is the best we’ve had. It has been built on a strong defence.We were not, however, expecting to achieve a second consecutive promotion.

“Getting to the top of the non-league football pyramid, currently to the Vanarama National League, is the biggest step up for a football club at any level. Many teams at this level now are fulltime, but at this Club our players are in other jobs

and want part-time football. The Board here knows what is needed in our newly acquired status and initially we shall continue with our policy of having good quality part-time players.

We cannot have some part timers and some full timers. It would not work.”

With the Hawks having now attained membership of the top non-league pyramid I asked Mr. Brock where does the club go from here?

He said “We must be realistic, but we feel we can be successful.We aim to consolidate and reassess as we move forward. Like any successful organisation we need to keep progressing.We are working hard on the basic needs for the Club to meet in its first season as members of the top league outside of the English Football League.Thankfully no big expenditure is needed at the ground.

“The changes we do need to adapt to include: • The extensive travel requirements

throughout the season across the whole of England and Wales.

• New contracts for the players.We will retain the existing squad, give them every chance.

• Add 2 or 3 National League standard players who we feel can help the team to consolidate and do well in the National League.

• New contracts for the management team” Hawks successful season also saw them lift the Hampshire Senior Cup on 18th April at Southampton FC’s St Mary's Stadium with a 30 win against Blackfield & Langley of the Sydenhams (Wessex) with goals from Andy Robinson, James Hater and Jason Prior.They also lifted the Portsmouth Senior Cup at Pompey’s Fratton Park on 17 May with a 3-0 win against AFC Portchester also by 3-0 with goals from James Hayter (2) and Alfie Rutherford.

Southbourne Men’s Shed New Coach Southbourne Men’s Shed has been awarded £1000 by Sussex Giving Fund at Sussex Community Foundation in it’s latest round of grant giving. The grant will pay for a new coach for their Ride on Railway which they use for raising funds for local groups including the Men’s Shed.

The railway that is over 120 feet long has already given pleasure rides at several local events in the past three years but it was in need of a better, safer coach. Men’s Shed Ride-on-Railway can now offer more comfortable smooth rides to hundreds more children of all ages.

“We are delighted to have received this grant,” said Douglas Meany, Secretary to Southbourne Men’s Shed. ”It means we can continue to support local community fund-raisers, schools, churches and other charitable groups with our railway and we’re really grateful for the continued support of Sussex Community Foundation and it’s donors.”

Southbourne Men’s Shed was opened over three years ago to give local men who have ceased full time employment, a meeting place where they could remain active mentally, socially and physically. It is a not-forprofit, non religious, non political, group of older men who enjoy having somewhere to go and something to do on weekday mornings as they enjoy coffee, cookies and chat in a safe friendly atmosphere. Shedders can sit and chat or use our fully fitted

workshops to follow a hobby or complete an individual or group project for himself, the Shed or the community. Several new skills have been learned and men from all walks and professions have formed many new friendships.

Trochanteric bursitis is a common hip complaint that causes pain and tenderness over the greater trochanter (outside point of the hip). It happens when the trochanteric bursa (fluid filled sac), located between the hip and the muscles and tendons of the outer thighs, becomes irritated or inflamed.

Trochanteric bursitis can be caused by: • Activities involving twisting or fast joint movements, such as cycling or jogging

• • • •

Previous hip surgery Prolonged pressure on the bursa Overuse Trauma to the outer thigh muscles or tendons • Poor posture What are the symptoms of trochanteric bursitis?

People with trochanteric bursitis may have a number of symptoms including: • Pain on the outside of the hip and thigh • Buttock pain • Pain when lying on the affected side • Pain that gets worse during activities such as walking, getting up from a low chair, getting out of a car, sitting with crossed legs or walking up stairs.

• Pain when pressing on the outside of the hip.

Treatment • Speak to your GP about appropriate pain control/anti-inflammatory medications if the pain is intense and/or affecting your sleep, driving, or ability to work.

• Reducing activities such as excessive walking or running for a short period may help to speed recovery • Applying an ice pack (wrapped in a towel to protect your skin) for 10-20 minutes three times a day may help improve your symptoms.

• Physiotherapy exercises combined with massage and soft tissue release is the best treatment for trochanteric bursitis.

Do you have family heirlooms sitting in drawers which are rarely opened? Selling through the auction can be a great way of swopping older items you don’t really want, for the money to buy something which you do want today.

So many of our sellers say they wished they’d taken the step before now, but had just never thought of the money they could take home as a result.

One lady recently came to us with silver cutlery and other items she didn’t use and hated polishing. Apparently her husband took some persuading. But when she showed him the £250 result, he said “maybe we should look in the other drawers”. So they did and took home nearly £350 the next month.

You see, we have plenty of buyers interested in antiques, curios and collectables, who have good money to spend on what they like.

And what they like covers a wide variety of antique and collectable goods such as stamps, postcards, cameras, clocks, pens, tools, oil paintings, watches, oriental, silver and gold items – even scrap jewellery and odds. I’m sorry to say that old teasets, vases and plates rarely sell well these days, unless they are exceptional.

The last couple of sales provided a good snapshot of what goes down well: An old family postcard album sold for over £400; a silver cigarette case over £60; a small gold mourning ring £100; a brass vesta case + 2 matchbox covers £40; a chest of old dolls & toys total £230; a Regimental sash £64; a vintage Tiffany & Co clock £200 and a pair of 1960s silver candelabra at £350.

At auctions the buyers are in competition with each other.The secret of selling well is to leave low - or no - reserves to encourage vigorous bidding.

There’s a saying in the trade “it will reach its price” The ‘under-bidder’ (the person whose bid was the last before the successful one) had set his limit at £400. He was disappointed to find that another bidder was prepared to go that little bit higher. Mind you, the seller was really quite pleased at the outcome.

www.postcodepublications.com It was a golden sunshine day on the 17th of May as members of The Arts Society Portsdown assembled for a True Gold celebration lunch at historic Stansted House to mark 50 years of NADFAS (National Association of Decorative Arts) now known as The Arts Society.

Current Chair, Diana Gough, welcomed the assembled guests and introduced Sue Mullane, Heritage Representative from the Isle of Wight and Hampshire Area.

Sue congratulated the Society on having two teams of Heritage Volunteers, one working at Stansted House and the other in the Royal Naval Library in Portsmouth Dockyard, as well as a dedicated team of Church Recorders at St Faith’s Church, Havant.These three teams have, between them, given several thousand hours of their time over the thirty-four years since the Society was founded. In recognition of their contribution, each team leader was presented with a True Gold certificate.

A birthday toast was proposed by Janet Williams, President of The Arts Society Portsdown, to 50 Golden Years of NADFAS. After a suitable chinking of glasses, those present enjoyed an excellent buffet lunch including a slice of delicious Celebration Cake.

Members were also able to enjoy a tour of Stansted House, both above and below stairs and were delighted with the fascinating stories

of the people associated with the House as well as the beautiful rooms which invoked times gone by. An added attraction was an exquisite model of the railway station at Rowlands Castle which had been a collection point for Canadian troops headed for the D Day landings in 1943. Another special item of interest to the Society’s members was the page in a commemorative book which recorded the gift from the Society of an English oak tree to the House to mark the Millennium.

The buzz of animated conversation between the visitors and the House’s welcoming and knowledgeable room guides was an indication of the enjoyment and interest shown.

At 3pm, as all the guests departed and the hubbub died away, one could truly say that the True Gold celebration had been a great success.

Local artists and craftspeople were invited to contribute their work to an Open Exhibition based around the theme of ‘Women, Suffrage and Art’ to celebrate 100 years since women first won the right to vote.

Twenty artists entered, with seventeen being chosen to display a total of twentythree pieces of artwork.

Following a special private view the winner of the competition for best work on display was announced by Director Sophie Fullerlove. The winning artist was Agata Wojcieszkiewicz with her artwork Labour

(Self Portrait) below.

The judging panel included Peter Hammond and Clare Jefferson-Jones, who also curated the exhibition. The Spring would like to also thank Barbara Howard for collating the information on the research boards displayed in the gallery.

The exhibition will be available for viewing until Thursday 29 June in the Upper Mezzanine Gallery at the Spring.

Don’t stop Wining Has the Prosecco Bubble Burst?

…why we may have got bored with Prosecco…

It seems that the trend wheel has turned once more, and our love of Prosecco is about to wind down. Sales of the Italian fizz rose by 5% on the previous twelve months, which is still impressive however its slowest rate since 2011 with previous sales growths reaching double figures. Could this be the start of the decline?

I have read mixed industry reports over the last week or so regarding this.

One reason could be the fact that supermarkets are over filling their shelves with cheap Prosecco which is in fact devaluing the product. This has turned Prosecco into a more mainstream wine alongside the likes of Pinot Grigio, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc or Rosé.

Another reason and something I have noticed myself is that as our tastes change and our wine knowledge increases, we are happy to spend a few pounds more to get a far superior product with other sparkling wines such as cremants and cava. That’s not say that Prosecco is not a superior product, it is, but you need to spend £9 upwards to get one.

I have noticed a huge jump in sales of sparklers from other areas of France, as it seems we want a bit more quality. These areas include the Loire, Burgundy, Alsace and further south in the Languedoc.

These wines, Cremant de Bourgogne, Cremant de Loire, etc are all made in the same way as Champagne, i.e. undergoing a secondary fermentation in the bottle, where as Prosecco undergoes a secondary fermentation in the tank. This creates a more softer character on the wine with more biscuit flavours and more elegance. This it seems are the flavours we prefer now. These wines typically cost around the £15 to £20 price mark so don’t need to be considered as a luxury drink but can still be considered for celebrations.

We must not forget the rise of English Sparkling wine either. Again, made in the same way as Champagne and with the same grape varieties, sales are expected to grow significantly. We love local produce, and this will continue especially as the quality of English wine gets better and better.

othing compares to a really good pizza, but the trick is to get the basics right. If you have great dough and a full flavoured, home-made tomato passata, then the rest is easy. There are countless toppings that you can use, or you can keep it to a simple margherita (add mozzarella and a couple of basil leaves), but if the dough and passata are excellent, then you can top with whatever ingredients are seasonal and tasty.

Stansted Farm Shop Pizza Dough Ingredients: • 300g Strong Flour • 300g Plain Flour • 120g Brown Flour • 8g Yeast • 16g Sea Salt • 400g Water • 40g Olive Oil Method: 1. Mix all the ingredients into a bowl 2. Knead for 10 minutes 3. Place in a large bowl (it will double in size) and rub oil over the top of the dough, cover and leave in the fridge for at least 2 hours, or overnight.

4. Weigh out into 180g portions and form into balls, dust with flour and leave on a tray at room temperature for 30 minutes to prove.

5. They are then ready to roll out into pizza bases.

Passata Ingredients • Two tins of good Italian plum tomatoes (or fresh vine ripened tomatoes if you can get them) • 10g salt • 5g sugar • One Garlic clove • Basil stems • 100ml. Red wine vinegar • 30g Tomato paste Method: 1. Combine all ingredients in a pan and simmer for 2 hours on low heat 2. Add water if required

We use a wood fired oven to create serious heat so that the base is crispy, while the toppings and cheese are lightly browned and sizzling as the pizza comes out of the oven. However, you can also use a pizza stone in your oven, or even the solid hob of a range cooker (with the lid down) to get similar results. But you will need to have your oven pre-heated at maximum temperature to get the best results.

Then have fun with the toppings – roasted onions and peppers are delicious, along with seasonal ingredients and different cheeses (Asparagus and goats cheese, or wild mushroom?).

The Broomfield Schools Photographic Competition It’s now eight years since Maurice Broomfield, an outstanding industrial photographer died and, as a fitting way of keeping his memory alive an annual competition for pupils in primary schools in and around Emsworth was set up. Suzy, his wife, was particularly pleased about it and helped to get it going in the early years. Latterly, her health gradually deteriorated and, on the penultimate day of 2017, she slipped quietly way.The work she did in the early days established that there was a need for such a competition.

The number of schools, the number of years in each school, numbers of photographs submitted by each pupil, all built up. This year was the 7th. Now that both Maurice and Suzy are no longer with us, it was felt the competition should be a memorial to both, which is reflected in the change of title to ‘The Broomfield Schools Photographic Competition’.

We are fortunate to have a group of their old friends who are experts in photography for judging and, sponsoring th competition, the Slipper Mill Pond Preservation Association (SMPPA).

Winners are chosen from each

School Year, the best of which are the overall winners, and get the top prizes in both an “open” category and one which involves Chichester Harbour and local wildlife. Those who enter really good photos but miss out on the prizes are awarded a ‘Certificate of Merit’.

The competition is supported by various groups; the Emsworth Community Association, who provide the venue for the prize giving, the Southern Co-Op who provide refreshments, the Emsworth Arts Trail who help to publicise it and, of course, the SMPPA. The pictures can be seen over the Bank Holiday weekend and, later, year group winners can be seen in the Emsworth Co-op where people can study them while waiting to pay their bills!

Nick Broomfield, Maurice’s son was not able to join us this year (he lives in California). Jeff Thatcher (Chair of Judges) and Gill Thatcher did the honours.The atmosphere was happy and we learnt something about how a young photographer should be developing to become an expert.

What a Difference a Day Makes

Pfizer pharmaceuticals company based in Havant has certainly made a difference to many different charities and organisations in the area over the past few years.

For two days in April and May, employees from Pfizer took time out of their working day and joined up with the Positive Pathways Project to lend a hand and support worthwhile local community projects.

Positive Pathways support local residents in the Havant area who need assistance to volunteer in the community, they have a personal plan created for them to help them reconnect with their community. Team volunteering days are a great way to do this.

fences and undertaking various conservation tasks at the large site, which is dependent on volunteers to maintain the beautiful woods and lake area. Debbie a volunteer from Pfizer said, “It’s been a very rewarding day and nice to see the difference we have made in just a few hours. I will definitely be volunteering again and would highly recommend people get involved in community projects.”

Marion a volunteer from Positive Pathways said, “I found volunteering today very worthwhile, it’s great to feel like I’m achieving something, and nice to get out and meet new people.”

The two teams worked tirelessly around the Billy’s Lake site, getting tasks done that would have otherwise taken days to finish.

Lillian Wakely from Billy’s Lake said, “the team from Pfizer and Positive Pathways worked so hard and did a fantastic job of building the new fence and helping to clear lots of the brush and saplings around the site. What a lovely group of people.”

The second event that Pfizer and Positive Pathways joined up for was helping Waterlooville Girl Guides at their Headquarters to make a shingle path around the building to create better access for the building. They also cut back and cleared the garden ready for the Guides to enjoy for the summer months.

£6,000 needed for Cemetery Gateway Repairs Last year a hit and run incident to the lovely flint wall relating to the New Lane, Havant Dissenters’ Cemetery occurred, and extensive research by The United Reformed Church locally and elsewhere indicates that the wall being outside of any particular church building is not insured and ownership has been lost in the ‘mist of time’.

It is going to cost just under £6,000 to repair, and like all churches, the cost of general maintenance is huge never mind walls not attached to any particular building.

This historic cemetery area in New Lane has three sections. The newest is still being used on a limited scale, and the two other areas are The Dissenters’ Cemetery,

and St Faith’s Old Cemetery on land given

by Sir George Staunton in the early 1800s, with a clear distinction between sections.

Friends of Havant Cemeteries work once a month to maintain and enhance this area of the town, to help it become a wild life haven for nature and people alike and a recent Heritage Lottery Grant has paid for new gates and seating in the Dissenters’

section installed by the Friends Group, with explanation boards about to be installed.

The United Reformed Church in North Street, Havant are now seeking donations to meet the cost of repairs to the damaged gateway wall to enhance the new gates and seating.

The Rowlands Castle Painting Society recently celebrated the quality of members work at the Annual Silver Cup Awards.

Submissions by members are entered anonymously as this makes for a fair and unbiased result and everyone present had a chance to vote for their favourite painting in various categories.

While the votes were being counted members were able to enjoy an excellent American supper organised by Suzanne McGowan, Fiona Chaâbane, Pat and Ian Hoper and helpers. Worthy winners of the 2018 Silver Cup Awards were Sue Tricket-

Business Enterprise Challenge From Rob Fryer, Meridian Centre Manager

April saw the fifth successive year of the Business Enterprise Challenge visiting the Meridian Shopping Centre in Havant, where young teams of business entrepreneurs from schools across the area displayed and sold their products in the annual competition that aims to develop young entrepreneurs confidence and team working abilities along with encouraging Individuals own initiatives, innovation, leadership and business acumen skills throughout the year supported by adult mentors.

All monies raised by the teams at the

end of the year are to be donated to Faith & Football which supports orphanages around the world. Best of all, the team judged independently at the end of the year to have shown the greatest level of skills in all these and other key areas, win the opportunity to go and visit the orphanage supported in Goa, India. What a Fantastic Prize!

The Fund-raising Team at Queen Alexandra Hospital are looking for members of the local community to raise money for elderly patients suffering from dementia.

Money raised will purchase dementia trolleys for each of the Wards within the Medicine for Older People’s Department at QA. The trolleys are light and portable and will help provide activities such as sensory items, puzzles, music, arts and crafts, cards and dominoes to frail patients, specifically those with dementia.

Each trolley costs around £280 – 370, plus another £300 to provide specificallydesigned, dementia-friendly activities.

HAVANT MURDER MYSTERY The gruesome unsolved murder of a Havant schoolboy in 1888 is the subject of a new true crime book by Petersfield author David Green. The Havant Boy Ripper, published on May 25, tells for the first time the full deeply shocking story of 8-year-old Percy Searle who was stabbed to death in The Pallant in the centre of Havant.

Another young boy, 11-year-old Robert Husband, was charged with the crime and sent for trial at the Winchester Assizes:“It was a sensational case at the time, and local and

national newspapers paid much attention to it,” says David Green, “yet the case is almost completely forgotten today. In the media frenzy that followed the murder, there was speculation that Jack the Ripper had commenced a new campaign of terror in south east Hampshire. I explore all of this in my book, but most of all I wanted to examine how the people of Havant responded to a child murderer in their midst.”

Monday 9th July - 1845 for 1930 hrs ‘The History of the Royal Jordanian Falcons Display Team’ - Presented by Colonel Ghazi N Al Sadoun.

An exceptional, and possibly unique, opportunity to attend a presentation by Col Ghazi N Al Sadoun, the Director of the Royal Jordanian Falcons National Air Display Team, who are displaying at the Yeovilton & Fairford (RIAT) Air-shows, in 2018. Col Al Sadoun has kindly agreed to come to Air ACES, between these Air-shows, to give an insight into this world famous aviation display team.

This will be the first time that such a talk

has been given by the Jordanian team in the UK. Col Al Sadoun will be explaining how and why this display team was formed, and how they have become one of the world’s Air-show favourites.

The Falcons have just received their new fleet of brand new Extra-330LXs at their base in Aqaba, Jordan and the Team will be displaying them for the first time at their upcoming European Summer Tour.

This promises to be a fascinating and entertaining evening.

Monday 20th August - 1845 for 1930 hrs ‘Tales from the Control Tower’ - Presented

by Joe Bamford Based on his book ‘Tales from the Control Tower’, Author and Aviation Historian, Joe Bamford will give a fascinating look back at the time when he was working as an Air Traffic Controller in the days before computerisation and much of his talk will cover the history of RAF Manston.

During his RAF career Joe was based at RAF Manston, as well as RAF Swinderbury, RAF Shawbury and RAF Gaydon - where he met the Red Arrows for the first time. He will explain how air traffic control worked in the dark days, when they didn’t have computers, and all control was visual and hand-done.

He will also recall some of the characters that he met as well as the time, in 2011, when he was arrested on charges of blackmail and conspiracy in connection with the recovery of an RAF Liberator KL654 in Malaysia.

Emsworth Artists 2018 This year we are encouraging the next generation of Artists with a Printing Workshop in the Community Centre for a group of young people with an exhibition of their achievements to run alongside our main Exhibition.

We are holding our Annual Summer Exhibition at the Community Centre-Church Path – Emsworth from Saturday 25th August until Wednesday 29th August Free admission - from 10am until 6pm daily.

All our Artists are of a high standard including Painters-Sculptors-PrintmakersPhotographers and Ceramic Artists.

We all live within a two mile radius of Emsworth Square.

IT'S THE WOOD Can't get enough of it!

Some of you will have heard or read in the news that the World famous guitar builder Gibson had gone bust and entered the American formed Chapter 11 so the company stand a chance of re financing and getting their act together!

Gibson’s problems started years ago, a lot came from the restrictions on certain types of wood which Gibson being a high end manufacturer and have been fined a large amount of money for importing more than they should! Their other major cost which has been on going for a number of years is copyright, they have been taking other guitar company's to court, and legal action is not cheap! The other major problem is the drop in the interest in the electric guitar across the World in general.

According to the trade, sales of electric guitars for a number of years has been over eleven million units, but over the past ten years has dropped to a million.

Something I have been predicting is the rise in the price of instruments in general.

When most manufacturers started moving their production to China in the mid nineties the price of many guitars came down; now sadly, the prices have started to rise.

Three main reasons: the price and availability of the right woods; Chinese costs - like increased wages, factory costs, materials and of course products made with a smaller consumer interest, are dearer to buy. Whereas mass produced products are cheaper due to the costs coming down!

The Princess Royal Trust for Carers in Hampshire Dementia Group Volunteers We are looking for volunteers to support our Time Together Group in Hayling Island. A monthly support group for people affected by Dementia and their friends, family and carers.

Hayling Island Community Centre, Station Road. PO11 0HB. The Group takes place on the 2nd Wednesday of each month 1.30pm-3.30pm.

The role of the volunteer can include: • Helping set out the room in an agreed layout, putting out signage and recording attendees; • preparing and distributing simple refreshments, collecting in and washing items used; • welcoming and talking with people with dementia and carers of people with dementia; • liaising with the group leader to support planned group activities; • supporting the group leader by encouraging participation, Supporting the collection of feedback from the groups, tidying up the room after the session.

• Enjoy meeting new people, have good verbal communication skills especially

face to face; • know about, or are willing to learn about, dementia and its impact on people.

THE CAT & RABBIT RESCUE CENTRE Hulky Bear Good day from your favourite out and about reporter at the Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre, Hulky Bear. Reporting to you live from the Centre.

Summer is almost here the rabbits are happily living back in the outside enclosure having so much fun playing on the grass, we have almost finished our building work and we are looking good again.

I am feeling a little tired. I like to have a lie in the mornings; lately the rooks that nest nearby have been making so much noise waking me up at the crack of dawn. I have to put my head under a duvet for some extra sleep.When I finally get up it’s nearly lunchtime, which I spend sitting outside with the staff waiting for tickles. Most of the time I am the star attraction but our goat Fuchsia joined us the other day and took over my

role.The staff think Hulk on your lap is a lot easier than Fuchsia!

An update on last month my friend and fellow out and abouter Carlos has now chosen his new house. He has taken residence by the entrance next to the stream.That way he gets a nice view and can keep an eye on security.

A date for your diary Sunday 12th August it is our Summer Fayre. One of our most popular stalls is the ‘Bottle Stall’ if anyone has any unopened bottles they are not in need of anything from bubble bath to alcohol we would be very grateful for donations to ensure we have lots of prizes to give away. More details on the fayre next month will follow.

Some sad news to finish with our matriarch of the out and abouters Ada Pretty sadly passed away after a sudden illness. Ada was almost in her 20’s, she loved sitting watching what was going on here.We will all miss her so much.

Summer is a-cumin in, or so they’d have said in medieval England! Local a cappella choir Folks In Harmony are celebrating the arrival of summer too with a bright selection of music and song.

You’ll get a warm welcome at their Summer Spritzer show and great

entertainment in a variety performance of showtime, popular and traditional songs, piano/cello recitals, octets, and blazing comedy too.

Since forming in 2012, Folks In Harmony has developed into a 40-strong, award-winning choir that regularly sings and participates in local community events. The choir also stages two shows per year to raise funds for local charities. This year’s fund-raising goes to Key Changes Music Therapy based in Winchester and the Hampshire & IOW Air Ambulance.

Return of the Vicar of Dibley to Hayling Island The elderly conventional vicar of the small English village of Dibley has passed away. A new vicar has been requested for a replacement.

What they get is Geraldine Granger, a non-traditional, chocolate loving, rock n' roll playing vicar. That is not what gets the citizens of Dibley in a uproar though. It's because she is a woman. Still, that doesn't stop Geraldine from proving her worthiness to the village. After time, the villagers (with the exception of influential David Horton) accept Geraldine as The Vicar of Dibley.

This iconic and brilliantly funny TV series has been cleverly adapted as a stage play with wit and humour throughout. This stage play is taken primarily from series 1 and 2, authors Ian Gower and Paul Mayhew-Archer have condensed some of the most popular sketches. It includes the Vicar's arrival and her refusal of Owen's marriage proposal to Hugo and Alice's wedding ceremony.

The Hayling Island Folk and Acoustic Festival Saturday the 28th and Sunday, the 29th of July. -The weekend will be a series of live music events in multiple locations around the island during day times, along with a mass dance on the Plaza on the Saturday night with a professional ceilidh band, Ceilidh Tree, so, bring your dancing shoes!

There is music happening in 6 different pubs, The Lifeboat, the Olive Leaf, The West Town, The Ferryboat, Lily’s Bar and The Hayling Billy. There are also performances at the British Legion, The Pebble Beach Café on the seafront and even the Hayling Railway station platform!

Music styles will range from traditional folk and Shanty tunes to blues, reggae, rock, Bluegrass, 1960s and contemporary singer songwriters. It is intended to be a truly multi genre live musical extravaganza!

In addition, there will be a separate event

during the weekend which is the annual Hayling Island Morris festival bringing a record 5 different Morris sides dancing their way across the island and bringing a feast of colour and traditional tunes to the streets.

More opportunities for people with learning disabilities in Emsworth Community First, a local registered charity, has managed the Hewitts community building in Emsworth for many years and more recently with their partner organisation The Right to Work, a Community Interest Company.The Right to Work enables better life chances and employment opportunities for adults with learning disabilities.The building provides a vibrant Centre providing fantastic, affordable, freshly cooked lunches and community spaces that are hired by a wide range of voluntary organisations and activities groups including the Emsworth Stroke Club.

The lunches are brilliantly cooked and served by adults with learning disabilities who are making a valuable contribution in supporting others, and older people and local people support them by using the lunch service. Hewitts provides a truly inclusive place in the community where people can come together and use their strengths for mutual benefit.

After much careful thought and consideration Community First terminated their lease with Havant Borough Council and transferred the Lunch Club and the Hewitts community building to The Right to Work who have been providing the excellent lunch services at Hewitts for several years.

WARBLINGTON & DENVILLES COMMUNITY EVENT The unfamiliar sound of pipers and drummers drew a crowd to the Stride Centre on Saturday 2nd June. The Rose and Thistle Pipes and Drums Band was applauded through the streets to the Stride for the Community ‘Big Lunch’ – part of the national scheme backed by the Eden Project, to encourage neighbours to meet each other. There was entertainment from Emsworth Concert Band; dance groups; the Just Us light opera group, the Spring, the Jiggly Wrigglers, the magician Mike Elvin and the facefanatics painters.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Havant together Alan Mak MP and Councillors Tim Pike and Jackie Branson joined the celebration organized by the Warblington and Denvilles Residents’ Association (WDRA) and other community organisations, supported by Postcode Publications.

Fresh From The Boat Hooks National Award Local Business Fights Rising Tide of Plastic Fresh From The Boat Havant based business started a few years ago with a simple concept of selling local fresh fish to local people. We didn’t want to be the ghosts of the sea but part of a community.

We started simply by selling our fish that was caught on our fishing vessel Sarah C and sold direct to local businesses, restaurants and people.

Also offering a Community Fish Box Scheme where you can get a whole kilo of fish for £7.

Over the last few years we’ve grown from strength to strength.

We’ve educated 100’s of people on the importance of buying fresh, sustainably caught fish and the importance of not just putting pressure on stocks such has salmon, tuna and cod.

We hold open days and fish filleting lessons.

We now not only sell fish from our boat but support many other local fishermen.

We sell our catch at various locations weekly, offer a home delivery service from shore to door and also supply local fishmongers, restaurants and public houses.

We may not have huge catches at venues, we may not have lots of species of fish, our business ethos is not about that, it’s about educating people on what we do catch, how to cook and prepare super fresh fish and to work with the seasons.

We have many species that are amazing to eat but they get shipped abroad, we no longer have that problem, 80% of catch is sold locally.

In March we were overjoyed to find out people in our local area had nominated us within the ‘Fishing News Awards’ as ‘Independent Fresh Fish Retailer Of The Year’ We honestly thought we had a small chance of winning but to be short-listed as the top five out of the whole of the UK and Ireland was a real achievement.

The biggest achievement knowing that people had given up there time to put us forward.

Voting opened for about a month and it felt like the whole local community had backed us.

I was so proud on 24th May when we took a flight to Aberdeen to attend the awards ceremony.

The night was full of comedy, great food and company but to top it off we were crowned ‘Independent Fresh Fish Retailer Of The Year’ This is a real success story and I’m super proud to work within the Fishing industry.

Here in Hampshire/Sussex we have some amazing places where you can buy fresh fish from and the seafood festival returns to Gunwharf again soon.

The fishing industry is a tough one to work in, long hours, huge risks and not to mention lots of political battles such as quotas and how we are managed. Almost a year ago to the day Lockheed Martin UK embarked on a beach clean at The Oyster Beds, Hayling Island. On the 18th May this year, the firm returned for another dose of fresh air, community spirit and a sense of accomplishment along with the Friends of Langstone Harbour. The Friends of Langstone Harbour are a conservation group promoting interest in the harbour and working to improve the area for local people and wildlife.

They welcomed the help from Lockheed Martin to keep the shoreline clean and litter free, particularly as plastic in our oceans is currently such a hot topic. A lot of the plastic from on-the-go food and drink packaging gets broken down in the sea and is often mistaken for food by fish and birds. Regular beach cleans are a great way for groups to get together as a team whilst helping their local community.

Lockheed Martin UK, based at Havant, regularly take part in volunteering activities organised by Community First and over the

past few years have helped many local charities and organisations. Mark Ralphson, a director at the company, is pleased to be out working with Community First on local projects. He said, “The beach clean is always a great event, all be it we are surprised at the amount of plastic and general litter we find.

It is a gentle reminder to all of us to dispose of our waste responsibly both as individuals and as Lockheed Martin.” John Worley from the Friends of Langstone Harbour said, “We have had a lovely day with Lockheed Martin, Hayling has never been cleaner. It has been a privilege to be out with such a hard working and cheerful group of people.” Without the support of local businesses, many charity and community groups would struggle.

POETRY AND MENTAL HEALTH SCHOOLS PROJECT The mental health of young people is a growing concern amongst schools, both locally and nationally. Many teachers and parents are noticing a rise in anxiety, depression and other emotional issues. The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre and the Warblington Partnership Board, a group of schools and organisations from within the central Havant area, initiated the Poetry and Mental Health Project. The project aimed to highlight some of the issues young people face today and explore how we can begin to tackle them.

This unique project brought together students (ranging from infant through to secondary school ages) from seven local schools to work with Joseph Coelho, a fantastic published children’s author and poet. Students explored emotions that young people today feel regularly and wrote poems to express their feelings. These poems were the building block used to create two short films produced by professional film-production company Millstream Productions.

The films include the poetry written by the young people, alongside animations bringing the words to life. The message of these powerful films is to encourage any young person who is dealing with negative emotions to speak to an adult they trust.

These films will be used as a tool to discuss the topic of Mental Health in schools and the local community.

As a result of this project and talking about mental health, these young people are now mental health ambassadors within their schools and know how to help themselves and others.

Faith Davies, Participation Officer, at The Spring explains how the project started: “The Spring has been supporting the Warblington Partnership Board’s great work around Emotional and Mental Health. We, as an organisation, recognise that the Arts can be an effective way to explore difficult topics with children and young people so The Spring and Warblington Partnership Board felt that poetry would be a great tool to explore the topic. This project aimed to use the ideas and experiences of local children to create a relevant Mental Health message they could share with their peers and the wider community.”

Postcode Publications The Lottery exists to support Good Causes and Charities in Havant Borough. It was launched in March by TV personality Fred Dineage, the then Mayor Cllr Elaine Shimbart, and Cllr Leah Turner.

It will enable those Good Causes registered with the Lottery to increase their funding through sales of tickets bought by their supporters. The monies that will be distributed to the Good Causes is much higher than most Lotteries in that 50% goes to the nominated Good Cause, and 10% goes into a Community Pot witch is distributed by a panel set up by Havant Borough Council (HBC) comprising local residents, a Councillor and an HBC Officer.

An International harpist helped to celebrate the President of Havant Rotary’s year as it draws to its close.

Elizabeth Jane Baldry was born and raised in Emsworth and is renowned for her skilful, touch and sensitive renditions of Harp Music.

Jenny Edgell’s year as President of Havant Rotary is due to end on the 30th June. It has been a remarkable year as we celebrated the Havant Clubs 60th year.

Jenny Said:“In my year I wanted to raise money for a new Refuge, a safe house for those fleeing domestic abuse. Havant Rotary has raised Southern Domestic Abuse Service (SDAS) nearly £2,500 so far in my year.

“We have held a Quiz Night and Raffles and events at Christmas to raise the money. Havant Rotarians have been so enthusiastic, and it has been an honour to be President of the Havant Club and I can’t thank the members enough for

‘GROWING OUR OWN’ PROJECT FUNDED Local Stream gets a Helping Hand Postcode Publications stepped up to a request for £250 funding from Havant Academy to fund their ‘Growing Our Own’ Spring/Summer Project.

Havant Academy students will now initiate their ‘Growing Our Own’ Spring/Summer project where students will plant, care for, harvest and cook with their own fruits and vegetables. This amazing opportunity for students to learn about the process of growing fruit and vegetables, healthy eating and a greater awareness of sustainable living.

The students calculated they would need £250.00 to set up their project and asked us as a local community business established to raise funds for community projects.

The students will guarantee to highly celebrate Postcode Publications within the project with a sign within the plot as well as recognised sponsorship and company logo on any social media posts, pictures and reports.

Clouds threatened but rain stayed away for a volunteer day to help Friends of the Hermitage Stream.

Pfizer a large company based in New Lane, Havant are undertaking a varied programme of volunteering throughout the year organised by Community First. A group of four employees gave up their morning to help, along with volunteers from Positive Pathways, a project based in Leigh Park supporting local residents in the Havant area who need assistance to volunteer in the community.

Friends of the Hermitage Stream are a community volunteer group looking after the stream and surrounding areas. They work with local schools doing activities such as stream dipping, bug hunting and even creating wild flower areas.

Every year the Hermitage Stream has a huge problem with Himalayan balsam. It’s been fun and very rewarding for us to be out and meeting new people in the community.”

Hayling to remember WW2 Civilian Causalties Hayling U3A, Hayling Lions Club, Hayling Royal British Legion and Hayling Community Centre are working together to collect the names of all local residents who lost their lives in WW2 through enemy action. It is proposed that a memorial plaque will be placed in the Community Centre in the autumn of 2019 remembering their names.

It is important for future generations that we do not forget the trauma that War had on the civilian population. Hayling’s darkest hours were in April 1941.

NEW HAVANT CENTRE FUND APPEAL This year Motiv8 is celebrating it’s 20th Birthday, that’s 20 years of Motiv8 delivering Life Chances for Young People and their Families. We’ve seen a lot of changes locally and globally during this time, and have shared journeys with thousands of young people who have demonstrated amazing resilience, determination and character to achieve their full potential.

Young people like Connor* who Motiv8 first supported in 2009. Connor was struggling both at home and in school. His attendance at school was 10% and he had become violent and aggressive. At home there was family conflict and Connor would often be left to fend for himself. Connor was dealing with a range of emotions with no one to speak to; that is until he started to get involved with Motiv8. Connor began attending Motiv8’s Alternative Education Programme and it soon became clear Connor could benefit from one to one support. He regularly met with a dedicated Motiv8 Support Worker who helped Connor build his confidence and selfesteem. He got involved in other Motiv8

Community activities, giving him something positive to do.

Connor’s journey through adolescence was tough, and his story is unique to him.

However, there are many young people like Connor who are facing a number of challenges, working through the journey from childhood to being an adult. Connor’s story reminds us that with the right support young people and their families can make positive changes. In this age of austerity with pressure on public services, the demise in youth provision, and the complexity of issues affecting young people, the need for Motiv8’s services is greater than any time in our 20 year history. We are committed to maintaining a sustainable, accessible presence in the communities we serve across Portsmouth and Hampshire, but we need your help.

Connor felt Motiv8 was his “safe place” and years later when Connor experienced a significant bereavement it was Motiv8 he turned to for support. Helping Connor look at positive options for his future was an important part of the grieving process and with support he joined the Army and had a successful career for 5 years. Unfortunately due to injury Connor had to leave the Army and needed to consider next steps, Connor recalled his time with Motiv8 and decided he wanted to use his experiences to positively influence other young people. Today we are delighted that Connor has joined the Motiv8 team as a Support worker and is providing life chances for young people.

Success for Havant WEA Courses

Courses for Havant’s Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) have now ended until September 2018. The autumn and spring courses in 2017 and 2018 proved very successful with many new people joining. In History members thoroughly enjoyed the study of “Taverns and Ale Houses” followed by “Preparation to repel the invader”, both presented by Jennifer Goldsmith. A new lecturer to Art Appreciation, Prasannajit de Silva, gave an excellent course on, “Art and Society in the 19th century,” and in Literature Christine Houseley presented “The Short Stories and Poems of Thomas Hardy” and the challenging question of “What Happened Next in Famous Novels?”

There were also two stimulating short courses, “An Introduction to

Archaeology” by Michael Pengelly, and an “Introduction to Media Studies” by Alyson Watts that evoked very lively discussion. The Day school, “What do we mean by Landscape?” by Geoffrey Mead, gave a full view of different kinds of landscapes throughout Britain.

On behalf of Havant WEA Committee, I would like to thank everyone who attends our Courses and Day Schools and the knowledgeable and entertaining lecturers.

Also the many local publications and outlets that carry our adverts and brochures. These range from magazines and newspapers to local libraries and radio stations, shops and notice boards – without this support it would be difficult to bring awareness of the WEA to the locality. The predicted thunder and lightning did not materialise but bouts of heavy rain and blustery winds made conditions difficult for fishing resulting in an early departure for a couple of anglers. There was a lot of carp spawning activity especially around the margins on the top island, so Terry was pleased about that.

There were some decent carp coming to the net with both Dave and Sue P both landing fish at 9lbs 4ozs for a bonus point each. Sue finished with 4 carp for 26lbs 14ozs to win with Dave runner up with 2 carp for 14lbs 12ozs. They were the only members to catch on the day.

Passport Control?

Hurtling at two hundred miles an hour from Zurich to Paris on the TGV recently, someone suggested that our passports may be required for inspection as we crossed the border into an EU member country; so we put them together on the table.

Our passports were not needed, so we picked them up ready for inspection at Paris Gar du Nord before catching the Eurostar to London.

I walked up to passport control at Gar du Nord, standing gazing at the camera whilst placing ‘my’ passport for examination in the mandatory way. After a ponderous wait, I was rejected for person to person examination the old fashioned way.

My companions and I were allowed to board, eventually arriving home in England.

A week later came a telephone call from my travelling companions asking if I had the correct passport. I looked, and imagine my utter amazement, I didn’t!

Quickly putting that right, I realised that I had come back home on someone else’s’ passport. If I had managed this then surely it begs the question how many others might either purposefully or unintentionally enter the UK in a similar way? ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The young people of Havant based, Music Fusion, are preparing to launch its fourth album, Mavericks II, in its ‘Words not Weapons’, campaign to challenge issues surrounding the influence of gang culture.

Music Fusion, is a charity that helps young people going through challenging circumstances to find a better path through music. They have been running since 2002 and have helped more than 30,000 young people in that time.

Its ‘Words not Weapons’ project has been running since 2011 and has gathered pace and momentum in seven years. The first album involved just eight young people and now Marvericks II will work with more than 100 musicians.

The music and lyrics performed and written by these young people will create a thought provoking compelling journey of hope. Telling young people to think for themselves, stand up for themselves and don't be like sheep and follow the crowd.

The charity’s aim is to empower young people to make informed decisions and spread a positive message that there are other ways and paths to take.

Jinx Prowse CEO at Music Fusion commented; “There have been a multitude of shocking stories recently surrounding knife and gun crime. In London and other parts of the country we have seen a drastic increase in knife and gun related incidents and it continues to grow.

“Young people are disengaged, disillusioned and have a lack of positive role

models. There are fewer youth clubs, open access music provision and things for them to do. Some youngsters may not have the advantages of others and feel cornered. They can't see a way out, so turn to drugs, crime and gang culture as a result.”

Mike James, Music Fusion Operations Manager, continued; "It's the negative cycle we aim to break. All of our young people are extremely talented, intelligent and motivated.

“They are just looking for something to focus their energy, a cause to get behind. We give them the tools to enable them to express themselves whilst at the same time making their communities safer places to live."

During the next nine months young people will be recording a double album of Hip-Hop, Grime and Rap music that tackles difficult subjects including knife and gun crime, drug abuse, mental health and poverty.

There will be a filmed documentary, meeting, writing and recording with VIP artists, culminating in a run of live shows to get their positive messages to the masses.

Matt Stevens, Music Fusion Project Manager added; "Doing the right thing isn't always easy, if the environment you're in promotes violence, crime, racism and homophobia. It's easier to stay quiet or even start to share the same values. We aim to have open discussions about people's perceptions and challenge them in a positive way."

Epic Row Completed!

Langstone Adventure Rowing, based at Northney Marina, Hayling Island has been working for the last two years with a team of doctors and nurses from Southampton Children’s Hospital, to undertake a daring

row from Jersey to Southampton to raise funds for the city’s children’s emergency and trauma department appeal.

Known as J2S and described as “epic” by five-time Olympic gold medallist Sir Steve Redgrave and backed by double Olympic champion James Cracknell. “Congratulations to all the doctors and nurses taking part in this epic row from Jersey to Southampton to raise

money for the new children’s emergency and trauma department. What an amazing thing they are all doing, good luck and well done – they all deserve gold medals,” said Sir Steve.

The crew of twelve trained for eighteen months to learn to row and cox themselves in the Gig Laura Jane over the 200km Challenge – managing the difficult tides & rocks around Jersey & Alderney; crossing the busiest Shipping area in the world in the Channel and the demanding tidal flows on the West Solent and Southampton Water.

All did not go as planned! One rower was injured, and the crew reduced to eleven! Then, as the crew arrived in Jersey

on 7th June, it became clear that a weather front on the south side of the Channel could scupper the ‘midday Friday to Saturday evening’ Row Plan. The whole thing could be cancelled! So, the crew accepted to bring the row forward and start on Thursday at Midnight instead – turning the row into an even more challenging two nights and a day!

Arriving at 2.30 am on 9th June in Ocean Village having been on the water for over twenty-six hours.

Not only that, the early start also meant that tides were against us, where they should have been ‘with us’. Rowing up the Solent, against the tide for eight hours at the end of the epic voyage was very demanding!

MIKEY SETS AN EXAMPLE So Wear Yellow Day will be very different this year, as families and friends travel to London, to march through the streets.

For the second year running, his parents Kayleigh and Dale Broad have very kindly allowed his image to be used on banners and postcards, to advertise Cystic Fibrosis Week, in June, culminating in Wear Yellow Day, on June 22.The local (Portsmouth) branch of the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Trust is grateful to the Pfizer Havant Community Fund, for making this possible.We were able to send a gift of space hoppers and school packs to the youngest CF children in the borough, to encourage them, their little friends, and their families to bounce.

ago, she and Xavi (48) completed the Couch to 5 K scheme, in Havant , and Sue , at 75, enjoys her swimming lessons, aqua exercise and gentle walking. Mikey's Mum, as soon as she found out about CF, decided that she would encourage Mikey to be extra active. She also set up a facebook page, Mikey's CF Journey @mikeybroadCF, to raise funds for charity and

foster understanding. She and Dale, and Mikey's maternal grandparents organise Little B’s Race Day (named after Mikey) as an annual event. It raises money for the CF Trust and hopes to raise awareness of this chronic, genetic illness.

Almost one hundred and fifty tickets have been sold and the family is hoping to beat the amount of money they've raised for the CF Trust the last two years to help with their vital research into finding a cure for their little boy and all those with CF. Fifty years ago, when the Trust was first set up, most children with CF tragically died in early childhood.Twice or thrice daily physiotherapy, medications, and a special diet become a way of life, with frequent hospital visits and sometimes intravenous antibiotics thrown in. But cystic fibrosis is different for every

person, and happily, most children with CF will now live to adulthood, and lead, to the outside world, a near normal life, with education, work, travel and sport all possible.

Only family-- parents, siblings, partners, children- and close friends know about the hard work and dedication needed behind the scenes..

The treatment is relentless, every single day of life, and can dominate the life of the whole family. Please help by at least wearing something yellow on 22 June, and joining Mikey in supporting over ten thousand young people in the UK. Heroines of their own story On a sunny, crisp, Sunday morning the Rural Refugee Network (RRN) held their third annual fund-raising ‘Walk for Hope’, starting with a gentle climb to the South Downs Way from Elsted and returning through Treyford to the Village Hall. This year, a number of Syrian refugee families, and one newly relocated Sudanese family, all rehoused and aided by RRN, took part. Together with volunteers and supporters of RRN they trekked through the beautiful West Sussex countryside - a far cry from the war torn destruction of the cities they once called home.

Following the walk, over refreshments in Elsted Village Hall, two young Syrian refugees from among the first resettled here with the aid of RRN, spoke with experience beyond their years of the journey that brought them to our shores.

Five years ago in 2013, Larisa, now aged 19, was leading a normal life, with no thought that she would ever leave Syria, but when her home town was razed to the ground in the course of just one day, her family were forced to move to Jordan, where they remained for three years. Assessed under the Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme (VPRS), the family arrived at Gatwick with one bag each and only memories of their home before the war.

Met by volunteers from the British Red Cross to start their new life in the UK, even tired

from travelling, Larisa was fascinated by the lush green beautiful landscape on the drive to Liss and the house with the small garden that was to be their new home and the start of a safe and peaceful life.

Once settled Larisa was able to turn her attention to the importance of education.

Seventeen years old by this time, she wished to complete her last year of school and move on to University, but with no proof of her qualifications she was required to retake them.

A further three years ahead of her before she could attend University in the UK, whereas her friends in Jordan would be heading to University this year, was a setback which took some time to come to terms with. However, Larisa has already completed these GCSE’s and is now studying for her A Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Maths. Understandably still struggling somewhat with English, its use of terms and phrases so foreign to her ear, she is determined to gain 3 A’s in order to study medicine. Becoming a doctor was a childhood dream for Larisa, now a young adult, her experience of war has become the driving force to achieving this goal; to one day be able to return to Syria, to Jordan and other warzones, with the knowledge and expertise that will help ease the pain war inflicts. This courageous young lady, who will never give up her dream of being a doctor and returning to her own country, left those listening to her in

tears and full of admiration.

At the start of the Syrian war in 2011, Rasha, now aged 18, and her family would hear bombs drop and explode so close to their home they had no choice but to flee, leaving friends, extended family and possessions behind. With just the clothes on their back and a few possessions they were able to carry in backpacks, Rasha and her immediate family fled to Lebanon. Homeless and frightened on an uncertain journey the family were eventually taken to a refugee camp. Visibly upset by her memories, Rasha recalled wondering if she would be safe there.Would she be able to finish her studies? She was a good student at home, learning English, but here there was no school, no welcome, no food and no healthcare. This was life in the camp for the next five years.

Once again under the VPRS, a refugee family found their lives changed forever. They received a call to say that a home had been found and they would be moving to the UK. Rasha expressed her family’s gratitude to the RRN and the many people involved in providing their new life, where she is able to

continue her much valued education. Yet she will never forget those left they behind in the camp. Every time she eats she wonders if they are eating too, if they have enough food, and if they are safe. One day Rasha will also return to her homeland of Syria, where she wants to open an Orphanage. ‘I will do this.This is my future,’ she says with determination, before asking for a moments silence for all of those who have died and continue to die in Syria.

Upon hearing the girls speak first-hand, these victims of war but heroines of their own story, volunteers at RRN feel compelled to continue their work. The need for more homes is paramount to the cause, without them the charity is unable to offer solace and peace to families in great need. The RRN relies on the generosity of private landlords wishing to offer a safe haven to a refugee family.

Health and fitness in 2018 Pine Pollen – The health booster!

For those of you that know me, or have been a client of mine, you will know my love for super foods! I am always on the look out for something new and amazingly beneficial for the body. I agree that some supplements are great, but the reason, in my belief that super foods excel in the Nutrition category is because the body recognises super foods as a food. So will absorb what it needs. Plus it’s a natural product that will drench each and every cell with goodness!

I have talked a lot about Bee Pollen in the past, which is an amazing super food that I love for all kinds of ailments. It’s especially good this time of year when hay fever is rife.

However there is another little gem in the wings that is actually nothing new in the world of Chinese medicine, but is fast becoming one of the best super foods in our western world for its unbelievable health benefits. This little gem is called Pine Pollen.

I have so many clients coming to me with hormonal imbalances around the age of 35 and upward.We are all subject to toxins in the environment that produce estrogen, resulting in potential fertility issues, benign fibroid growths and breast cancer, and both men, as well as women, usually by the age of 50 produce significantly less testosterone. This is especially true after male andropause and female menopause. However, consuming androgenic foods, like pine pollen, helps to balance these higher amounts of

xenoestrogens, balancing both testosterone and estrogen equally, which is highly beneficial.

Generally, pollen extract is not recommended for children and should be avoided by male adolescences, which on average naturally produce healthy amounts of testosterone. In mid-life, when you perhaps need a bit of a boost, its important to remember that testosterone is not only good for increasing sex drive but also helps to promote feelings of well-being, uplifts the mood and stimulates a sense of will power and enthusiasm for life. Containing a substance called phenylalanine, an L-dopa precursor, which helps to stimulate dopamine levels in the brain, it is additionally believed to act as a natural antidepressant. In the world that we live in today, with 1 in 6 people being prescribed anti-depressants, is it not worth trying this wonderful super food first to see how you feel?

There are so many other health benefits to add to the list. Solent Sunbeam fleet celebrate ninety-five years on the waterFrom Sarah Johnson The historic Solent Sunbeam fleet celebrated ninety-five years on the water with a weekend of excellent racing on Chichester Harbour at the end of May in their special 95th Anniversary Regatta.

Nineteen of the class, which was designed by the eminent designer Alfred Westmacott in 1922, took to the water for a perfect weekend of sunshine and moderate breezes.

Such is the longevity of the class that the first Sunbeam,V1, Dainty, at 95 years old was racing against a one year old boat!

The first day of competition starting in cloudless skies and moderate 15-knot breezes which increased to 20 knots during the course of the day. In the first race, Julian Money sailing V42 Penny raced into an early lead followed by Roger Wickens in V26 Danny. Danny, however, forged ahead. Behind Penny, Tim Hill in V25 Query pipped V68 Sky on the finish line for third place. In the second race there was some close racing between Danny and V18 Polly sailed by Nick Leach. These two had a good lead over the chasing pack and they finished first and second respectively.

The second day dawned windless but after

some delay a light breeze emerged.

With the tide ebbing this put a premium on fast downwind sailing and the marks consequently became fiercely contested. Danny led from the first mark followed closely by Polly and these two maintained their positions until the end. Unfortunately for Polly she was disqualified for being over the line at the start, giving second place to Penny.

With three first places, Roger Wickens in Danny secured the regatta victory with one race to spare. In the final race, Query and V14 Jabberwocky, sailed by Mike Weston, led from the first mark and kept their positions until the end.

Behind them, Danny and Polly had another close tussle but Danny prevailed in the end. The overall results were in doubt until the final leg of the last race, such was the closeness of the competition. In the end, Query was second overall, just one point ahead of Penny, who was also one point ahead of Polly.

STANSTED PARK FOUNDATION THROUGH THE GLASSHOUSE Stansted Park Foundation is delighted to announce that it has secured first stage funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) towards a new visitor centre and exhibition of the Ponsonby family.

The award is a vital step in beginning important restoration work to the derelict Victorian glasshouse, one of a pair in the estate’s Walled Gardens. The second was restored in 1999 and houses the popular Pavilion Tea Rooms. The Foundation will receive initial funds from the HLF to support the initial stages of the final project.

The ‘Through the Glasshouse’ project puts Stansted Park’s rich heritage right at the core of the site. A wide range of activities will encourage participation from audiences of all ages, including a Visitor Welcome and Information point, exhibition space and workshop rooms along with formal and informal education programmes.

One of the key aims of the project is to introduce Stansted’s visitors to its landscape and rich history – including its most recent owners, the Ponsonby family.

‘I am in no doubt that the proposed conversion of the dilapidated structures in the Walled Garden to a Visitor and Education Centre will secure the future of these historic structures and provide much needed interpretation facilities for visitors.

More people, young and old, will be able to understand the significance of this important country house and its relationship with the landscape in which it sits,’ said Dr John Godfrey, Chairman, Sussex Heritage Trust.

In 2016, the Stansted Foundation secured ownership of the nationally significant Ponsonby Family Archive

Collection, which brings alive the extraordinary stories of one of the country’s most influential families. The substantial archive comprises medals, miniatures, letters, photographs and personal documents, including handwritten notes from Queen Victoria to Sir Henry Ponsonby, her private secretary.

Other highlights of the collection include Frederick Ponsonby’s sword, which saved his life at the Battle of Waterloo and is considered to be one of the nation’s most important surviving artefacts from the battle.

James Cooper, Director of the Stansted Park Foundation, said: ‘We are very excited at the new facilities the project will offer visitors to connect directly with Stansted’s rich heritage. They will move ‘through the glasshouse’ and out into the wider estate with a greater understanding of the history and significance of the site.’
