Havant Schools sweep the board in the ROTARY YOUNG CHEF COMPETITION SECOND ROUND.Winners compete from across East Hampshire SIX students, their families, teachers, Rotarians and judges gathered for the second stage of the Young Chef Competition on the morning of Saturday 20th January. All six were winners of the first round held recently at Park Community College.There were three students from the Havant Schools area and three students from Gosport Schools.

Competitors are between the ages of 13 years and 17 years.

The competition took place in the Restaurant and Kitchens at Havant and South Downs College thanks to the kind offices of Paul and Kerry Mansfield.

The judges were Oliver Clift from Emsworth

Sailing Club,Tim Brookes from Brookfield Hotel and Simon Martin from Antonio’s Restaurant in Fareham who all gave freely of their time.

Ollie Clift said “It is a real pleasure to be part of the Competition and to see the high standard which these young people can achieve. “ The competitors had designed their own menus for a healthy meal for two adults consisting of starter, main and dessert courses for a total cost of £15.They also designed the table layout and set the table to enhance and reflect their choice of menu.They were given only 2 hours to cook and plate and display all three courses.

The judges complimented the students on the quality, individuality and presentation of their meals and the professionalism with which they undertook the cooking challenge.The results are • First place - James Cardy from Havant and South Downs College • Second place - Izabella Darmanin from Park Community School, Havant and; • Third place - Joshua Marsh from Hayling College.

All participants received a certificate and the three winners were given prizes of food preparation equipment.These were presented by Havant Rotary Club President Jenny Edgell and Gosport Rotary Club President Ray Drake.

James and Izabella now qualify for the Third Round of the competition which will be held on 3rd March at Havant and South Downs College, they will compete against other winners which could be from schools across the whole of Hampshire, part of Wiltshire, part of Dorset the IOW and the Channel Islands, which is the area covered by Rotary District 1110.

Report on my work locally and in Westminster

Friendly, Havant choir, Folks in Harmony, have donated £1,500 to 3 local charities. The money was raised at their 2 concerts held last year, in the summer and at Christmas as well as at various carol singing gigs in December.

The mixed, a cappella choir presented the money to the charities concerned at their annual party night, held in February because they couldn’t fit it in last December! Charity representatives were invited to come along to the event and the choir member responsible for suggesting them presented them with a cheque for £500 each.

The chosen charities were the MS Society, Chichester and Bognor Regis branch, Zellweger UK and Rachel Madocks School, Waterlooville.

Caroline Davis, who presented a cheque to Evelyn Lister from The MS Society said, “I chose this charity because they supported me tremendously throughout my late husband Adrian’s gradual decline from multiple sclerosis. They have continued to support me through the 5 years since he died too. As a founder member of Folks in Harmony in 2012, I was really touched when the Society kindly invited us to perform at a Summer Social when they had no idea what we sounded like! Happily, we can’t have been too bad as they have continued to invite us back to sing every year.”

In addition to supporting local people affected by MS,The MS Society’s Chichester & Bognor group fund items needed by them because of their disability, including home adaptations and mobility aids essential to retain independence, improve their mobility and reduce social exclusion.

The second presenter, Helen Hughes, chose Zellweger UK, a tiny, fledgling charity that supports the families of babies and children affected by the rare genetic disease, Zellweger Spectrum Disorder which causes multi-sensory loss and a plethora of health issues. Helen lost her granddaughter, Ellena May, to this disease at the age of 9 months.

Helen’s daughter and mother of Ellena May, Kerry Hughes, who is a trustee, volunteers for the charity and attended the presentation, found support via the US, from other affected families here in the UK. Together they founded the UK’s only charity dedicated to Zellweger syndrome, and it now helps fund research as well as helping 45 families with equipment, information and emotional and financial support.

The third charity presented with a cheque was Rachel Madocks School in Waterlooville, which is for children between the ages of 2 and 19 years of age with severe learning difficulties. Their Eagle Appeal is looking for funding for after-school clubs, school trips and gym equipment. It was the choice of Rosemarie Willoughby, who presented the cheque because it is such an exceptional place with dedicated staff who strive to educate and enable the children to lead a normal life despite their capabilities.

Rosemarie wanted to help ever since she first met the staff and pupils and said, “I am thrilled that the choir has made this generous donation. I was invited to their Christmas service this year and was amazed at each and every one of them and yes, I am not ashamed to say I had a tear in my eye as I watched their great choir.Well done to the staff and the children's parents for all their hard work.”

Folks in Harmony is supporting 2 new charities in 2018, Hampshire Air Ambulance and Key Changes Music Therapy based in Winchester.

The award-winning choir has come a long way since 2012, winning the Choir of the Day Cup at Portsmouth Music Festival last year, and it meets weekly on a Thursday evening in Bedhampton Social Hall. It currently has vacancies for all voice parts.

Ensuring the area’s economy remains strong continues to be my top priority in 2018, and there’s much to be positive about.

Locally, unemployment is lower than the national average and those claiming out of work benefits has fallen by half since 2010.

Last year, I visited upgraded sites at Colt, Kenwood and FatFace, who opened a brand new distribution centre at Dunsbury Hill Farm. All of these are employing hundreds of local people, as well as contributing towards a strong national picture with more than thirty million people in work across the country.

For anyone still looking for work, my Havant Jobs, Apprenticeships and Careers Fair returns to Havant Leisure Centre on Friday 9 March between 10am and 3pm for a third consecutive year. More than sixty exhibitors will be at the event, which is backed by the Jobs Centre, with hundreds of jobs and apprenticeships on offer.

That includes representatives from dozens of industries from both the public and private sectors, ranging from the Armed Forces to care agencies and retail, who will all be on hand to offer jobs and advice.

Specialist workshops will also be

provided by the National Careers Service on Curriculum Vitae building and job interview techniques.

In Westminster, I’ll be moving into a more senior position within the Government, as Parliamentary aide to Secretary of State Greg Clark in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). As Parliamentary Private Secretary I’ll act as a link between the Government and Conservative backbench MPs as new legislation is formulated, focusing on implementation of the Government’s Industrial Strategy.

Despite the promotion, I’ll continue to champion local issues in Westminster and work hard for Havant residents – it remains an honour to serve as your local MP. Dementia Friendly Hayling Island Dementia Friendly Hayling Island have now created a grand total of 500 Dementia Friends. We are a small group of volunteers offering Dementia Friends sessions to local residents and businesses, sharing ideas to create a dementia friendly environment. For example removing a dark doormat which could look like a black hole to someone living with dementia, which can be very upsetting for them.

Dementia Friendly Hayling Island is holding a network event at the end of this month to work with local services, such as the library service. We have also attended

Cancer should have been diagnosed by QA earlier

You may have heard the devastating news.

Our local hospital, the Queen Alexandra has failed people with cancer.

It was revealed late last year that a nation-wide review was sparked when CQC inspectors discovered over 20,000 X-Rays were not examined correctly.

Tragically, this has had devastating consequences for individuals and their families.

One of my clients was contacted by the QA to be told that their X-rays were not properly examined. The radiology department missed her cancer.

If they had examined the X-Rays correctly at the time, lung cancer would have been diagnosed many months earlier.

Tragically, our client was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer and has recently passed away.

We will continue to act for this client, to get her family the answers they need.

Delays in diagnosing cancer have serious consequences Another client contacted us when their spouse passed away following a delayed diagnosis of throat cancer.

Their GP failed to follow NICE guidelines even though they met the criteria for an urgent referral to hospital.

This happened on a number of occasions.

Again, we are investigating whether an earlier diagnosis would have led to our client’s spouse living for longer.

Often our clients just need answers.

The NHS often closes rank and won’t

answer the questions that our clients so desperately need answer.

The come to us so we can take the load from them while they grieve, and we get them the answers that they need.

FOURTH PRESENT DRIVE Postcode Publications were pleased to donate towards the fourth annual present drive organised by Havant Borough Council (HBC) staff where seventy presents were given to children supported by Southern Domestic Abuse Service (SDAS) who provide services to people who have experiencing domestic abuse.

A Christmas tree was decorated with labels which described the age and gender of a child. Each label was replaced with an appropriate present based on the description, and placed underneath the tree by members of staff and councillors.

The presents of all shapes and sizes were collected by HBC’s operational partners, Norse South East,

Exciting new community project launched

In December over sixty people saw the official launch of the new Positive Pathways Big Lottery Funded project at the Leigh Park Community Centre.

Community First were successful in receiving the grant for the project that works with Havant Borough residents who need a little bit of help to volunteer in their community, to increase participation in volunteering especially for those who are long-term unemployed, or who want to reconnect with their community but do not have the confidence to do it alone.

Mengham Junior School school councillors were thrilled to welcome BBC Radio Solent presenter Katie Martin.

She came to investigate the children’s understanding of Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and Lent. The school councillors, along with teaching assistants Sonia Hayes and Amanda Westbrook, made pancakes whilst Katie interviewed them.

CRAFT BEERS - Enjoy your Local Ales A TALE OF TWO BREWERIES

There are over 1700 breweries in the UK of which two are located in within the Borough of Havant. I have been out recently visiting both of them and sampling their excellent local brews.

EMSWORTH BREWHOUSE www.theemsworthbrewhouse.co.uk - This brewery was started in 2015 by Grant Thomas at a private house in Emsworth but has now been sold and relocated to Havant.

The brewery is now owned by local entrepreneur and Emsworth resident Jonathan Khoo who has a degree in Product Design and had previously ran a climbing equipment business. Jonathan had been a homebrewer and heard that Emsworth Brewhouse was for sale on Facebook. He has purchased the stainless steel 1.5 barrel plant (475 pints) and has continued to brew to the original recipes.

Jonathan works on his own at a small unit in Bedhampton. He brews cask ale for local pubs and bottled beer which can be obtained from local outlets including: Emsworth Delicatessen, Southbourne Farm Shop, Stansted Farm Shop and Vin Wine Merchants, Emsworth. Jonathan likes heavily hopped American IPA style beers but also hopes to introduce new styles of beer.

Here are my tasting notes on the bottled beers brewed by this brewery.

Wodehouse Full bodied English Ale 4.8% abv. - This is a very fine bottle

conditioned Bitter made with Barley, Wheat and English hops. It is named after the writer, P G Wodehouse who lived in Emsworth in the years before the First World War. This ale pours a dark ruby colour with a grassy aroma. It is a full flavoured nutty beer which would go well with Fish and Chips.

SkIPA Hoppy American IPA 5.4% abv. - This American style beer pours a light golden colour and has an orangey aroma.

The taste reminded me of grapefruit marmalade. It is not as astringent as some US style IPAs. This would go well with Asian food.

Flotilla Fruity Amber Ale 4.4% abv. This beer pours a ruby colour with a dried fruit aroma. It is a full flavoured bitter with plenty of malt body. A good example of a traditional English bitter which would go well with most meals.

Mainsail Fully Hopped Ale 3.8% abv. This golden ale has a floral aroma with a citrusy grapefruit flavour. This would make a good session beer to drink on its own.

EMSWORTH BREWERY www.facebook.com/Emsworthbrewery/ - The brewery opened in 2011 and is located at the rear of Emsworth Antiques in West Street, Emsworth. It is run by Ollie Watson and Sam BarronBolt. They have a brewing capacity of 2.5 barrels (720 pints). In their small brewhouse there are a number of refurbished wooden milk storage tanks which are used in the various stages of the brewing process. Emsworth brewery currently sells cask ale to local pubs, clubs and beer festivals and also offers draft beer direct to the

public. Their bottled beers are available from Emsworth Antiques and Ivy Wines, Main Road, Emsworth. Here are my tasting notes on the bottled beers brewed by Emsworth Brewery.

Hollybank Winter Brew 4.3% abv. This is a fully flavoured dark beer. It pours a dark brown colour with a caramel aroma. It tastes of chocolate, caramel and malt with

A Surestart for Centre’s Garden

Before we put our gardens to bed for the winter we need to cut back bushes and trees and clear out overgrown flowerbeds so that they are ready to thrive for the next growing season.

This was the task for a willing group of volunteers from Pfizer a large pharmaceutical company based in Havant. They answered the call from Park Families’ Warren Park Nursery based at the Surestart Centre in Warren Park, Havant.

in the interests of social welfare, with the aim of improving health, social, and emotional wellbeing.

The Surestart Centre is a great community space providing many different activities, as well as a thriving nursery open 51 weeks of the year 8am6pm. They also have a great community café open from 9am-2pm in term time. Their training team provide opportunities to gain qualifications in childcare, first aid, health and safety to name a few.

There are many small garden areas at the Surestart Centre that needed a bit of a clear up. Trees and bushes had become overgrown and some of the nursery gardens had become unrecognisable with weeds taking over.

The Pfizer volunteers worked hard to

clear the areas making the gardens a more attractive and usable space for the Centre to enjoy. Pfizer have had a fantastic year so far volunteering to help many charities and organisations around the Havant area facilitated by Community First. Martin from Pfizer said, “We always appreciate the opportunity to help, it gives us a great feeling of satisfaction when you can see the difference you are making to our local community” Park Families were extremely grateful for the support from the volunteers and the garden areas were completely transformed. Alison Henry, Manager at Park Families said “This support is really appreciated. I would like to thank Pfizer on behalf of all the children and families that can now use the garden.”

great depth of flavour. A Winter Brew is a traditional style of beer similar to Brown Ale, Mild and Winter Warmers. An exceptionally fine tasting beer that would go well with roast beef.

Fairfield Amber 4.2% abv. - A dark amber beer with a caramel aroma and a distinctive smoky, toffee flavour. It is very malt forward beer. This would work well with a beef casserole.

Slipper Session Bitter 3.7% abv. - This is a fully flavoured dark beer which pours a rich ruby red and has a burnt toffee aroma with a fine caramel malt taste. Dark beers are something of a speciality for Emsworth Brewery who should be praised for supporting these traditional full flavoured brews. This would go well with a winter casserole.

Wayfarer Golden Ale 4.2% abv. - This is a pleasant version of a lighter style of ale which offers an alternative to the lager drinker who is seeking a more flavoursome drink. Wayfarer pours a golden colour with a fruity aroma. It has a smooth lemony taste.

This beer would go well with a Chinese meal.

LOCAL BEER BOOK - Chichester Pubs

by David Muggleton. Amberley. 2017. 99 pp. £14.99 This book arrived too late to be included in my Christmas Beer Book guide but it is so good I did not want to leave reviewing it until the end of the year.

David, who is a lecturer at the University of Chichester has already written two fine beer books, Brewing in West Sussex and Brighton Pubs. The book is organised into four tours of the city which help the reader explore 70 pubs, both past and present. Chichester had no fewer than 84 pubs in 1839 but this number had fallen to 41 by 1955. There are currently 22 pubs in Chichester including six which have opened since the Millennium. The book is beautifully illustrated with the author’s own photographs. There is a useful map showing the location of all the pubs mentioned and there is also a comprehensive bibliography.

This book would make a great companion to a day out in Chichester.

FACTS AND FIGURES • Despite 21 pubs closing every week we still have around 50,000 pubs in the UK. In 2010 there were over 55,000.

• 49% of adults visit a pub at least once a month.

• Average price of a pint of cask ale in South East England is £3.43.

• Lager makes up 65% of all beer drunk in pubs, Ale is 29% and Stout accounts for 6%.

• In the UK we consume 7.7 billion pints of beer a year.

This is down from over 10 billion pints in 1979.

• Over 51% if beer is now consumed at home. In 1980 88% of all beer was consumed in pubs.

STANSTED PARK

estled between Chichester, Portsmouth and part of the South Downs National Park, Stansted Park stands in 1,800 acres of extraordinary landscaped parkland and ancient forest.

The earliest records of inhabitants on the estate date back to medieval times when the grounds were used for hunting and royalty frequented the Park. King Henry II, Richard the Lionheart and King John have all been known to have visited the forest.

In 1688 the first house was built on the present site for Lord Lumley. The estate changed hands and appearance over the centuries, being bought and sold by many colourful characters including an Indian Nabob, the famous Jewish converter Lewis

Way, a generous London wine merchant by the name of Charles Dixon and the Wilder family, who gained possession in the nineteenth century.

In 1900 a devastating fire tore through the house leaving nothing but the original vaulted crypt. The house was painstakingly rebuilt over the following three years on the exact footprint of the old house and was purchased in 1924 by the Earls of Bessborough who spent the next sixty years here with their families, enjoying all the house and estate had to offer.

In 1983 the 10th Earl of Bessborough made the decision to give Stansted Park, the Arboretum, his family home and its beautiful contents to the public. Stansted

Park Foundation was set up as a charitable trust charged with the preservation of the estate for the benefit of the nation.

This Edwardian building is the house you see today. The ground floor is adorned with the Bessborough family portraits and possessions as well as original furniture, fixtures and fittings. Downstairs is home to one of Britain’s best examples of ‘life below stairs’ with room upon room laid out as it would have been in the house’s heyday.

In addition to the mansion, Stansted Park also has a private chapel which has a unique colourful history of its own. This elegant Regency chapel stands on the site of the first great house and re-uses some of

Postcode Publications Councillor backs Havant Scouts Havant Councillor Edward Rees has secured funding to assist with much needed renovation works to Havant District Scouts HQ. The centre which is partly a post war prefab construction had fallen into disrepair. Severe woodworm combined with plumbing and electricity problems made use of the centre difficult.

Cllr Rees who was a local Scout in Havant was keen to get involved. Cllr Rees said ‘’From the age of five I joined Leigh Park Scout Group and I have witnessed first-hand the positive impact that Scouting can have on our young people.’’ He went on say ‘’In Havant we have over 500

young people actively involved in the Scouting, my thanks goes out to all of those who volunteer to run groups.Without them, the movement could not exist.’’

District Scout Chairman Nigel Valette said ‘’Cllr Rees’s commitment to local Scouts is testament to the lasting impression that Scouting can have on young people.We all would like to thank Cllr Rees for his hard work locally and his continued support. HAVANT BOROUGH LOTTERY LAUNCHED Havant Borough Council is one of the first local authorities in the country to launch its own online community lottery to support local good causes by.

Tickets will cost £1 with 60p going towards local good causes, compared to just 28p in the pound for the National Lottery.

The draw will be weekly with a jackpot of £25,000 for a matching sequence of six numbers, other prizes being £2,000, £250, £25 or three free tickets.

When buying a ticket, players will be able to choose which good cause they want to support from a list provided.

Havant Borough’s good causes will be able to set up their own lottery page, and will receive 50p in every pound spent by players using this method. A further 10p in every pound will go into a general good causes fund, with the remainder being put towards prizes, operating costs and VAT. Players who do not wish to support a

specific cause can still take part in the Havant Community Lottery, with 60p of their ticket price going into the general good causes fund. The distribution of this fund will be decided by a panel made up of council and community representatives.

Residents will be able to buy tickets and sign-up from mid-March and the first draw will take place on Saturday 7 April 2018. SOUTHBOURNE WINS BOWLS CLUB OF THE YEAR Representatives from Southbourne Club - Bowls Section were delighted to win the Bowls Club of the Year Trophy at the end of 2017. The ‘Club Mirror Magazine’ annual award ceremony was held at Doncaster Race Course and Southbourne attended having been nominated for various awards by Dransfields (leading suppliers of gaming machines to clubs and pubs).

After a wine tasting session and a sumptuous meal for the 600 people present at the awards ceremony, the compère John Inverdale presented the Trophy to Margaret Odell the Chairman of Southbourne Club.

The government has pledged that by 2040 all new cars will need to be either electric or some form of plug-in hybrid.

However, many within the motor industry predict that by 2025 one in three cars will include an electric powertrain.

To incentivise their take-up, significant changes to company car tax benefit-in-kind bands affecting vehicles that emit less than 75g of carbon dioxide for every km travelled were announced in Autumn 2017 Budget.

These low emission vehicles are referred to as ULEVs. Below we outline some of the current tax benefits and implications for business vehicle owners: • 100% first year allowances are currently available on new cars until 31 March 2021 • The allowance will cover new equipment installed solely for the purpose of charging electric vehicles. This will be a taxable benefit if installed at home

•

The provision of a ULEV as a benefit-in-kind can form part of an effective salary scheme thereby reducing income tax and National Insurance contributions • The benefit-in-kind is currently 9% of the list price. This is increasing to 13% in 2018/19 and 16% in 2019/20 but planned to drop to 2% from 2020/21 • As electricity is not a road fuel, the car fuel benefit charge does not apply to electric charging of company cars.

Charging costs are not taxable if paid by the company or are reimbursed to the employee and there is no private usage The forthcoming changes mean that businesses, employers and employees will need to carefully consider their right choice of vehicle from a tax efficiency point of view. Cycle Clinic From Mike Skiffins - Portsmouth CTC We've had Rain, Snow, Ice, Gale force Winds, - everything you'd expect from an English Winter.

Our bikes have either carried us faithfully all through this or been locked away in the shed, protected, but neglected.

Either way, with Spring coming we need to repay this with a little Tender, Loving Care to our bikes to get them ready for the miles ahead.

Most of the things I will mention can be done at home, but if you have any doubts your local cycle shop will be happy to carry out a service.

Firstly we need to check the tyres. Make sure that there is enough tread left on them.

Bald tyres get punctures more easily and they don't grip the road properly.Then ensure that they are fully inflated, and check the outside tread for embedded thorns or flints.

VALENTINE YOUR BIKE

Any that you find need to be removed before they work their way through and cause a puncture.

The wheels have to be turned to get us moving so it is important that the pedals, chain and gears are reliable. In bad weather a lot of dirt and dust gathers on this part of the bike, near the ground.

Even if the chain is well oiled the dust and grit stick to the mechanism.

Special devices are available to clean the chain without taking it off the bike, but it can be cleaned with a cleaning fluid and a brush applied while you are turning the pedals backwards. Pay special attention to the gear block or cassette. Dirt always gathers in the slots between each gear. Simple brushing can't get there but a slender stick, like a Kebab stick, will do the trick. Once all the greasy,

gritted muck has been removed a squirt or two of cleaning fluid and a good brushing will stop that grit working its way into other parts.

Once the chain is fairly clean, wipe it with an old rag, again turning the pedals backwards, then apply a light cycle oil ready for the rides ahead.

The oil helps all the little joints to move freely and deters rust from seizing up the chain if it gets wet. Now we need to think about stopping!

Brake blocks wear down with use, and the material they are made from can deteriorate with time and the weather.

Check them over and replace them if necessary.

It's an easy job to do and they are not very expensive to buy, but absolutely vital.

The brake and gear levers need very little maintenance but a touch of oil on the pivot points is useful before looking at the cables.

Check that they move freely when the levers are operated. If the cables are sticking and rusty they will need replacing, but that is not something that is needed every year.

Finally a good clean to the frame.

Do not use a power spray as pressurised water can be forced into bearings and joints.

A bucket of water, a sponge and some car shampoo should remove most of the dirt and for a finish and a shine, a spray on furniture polish such as Pledge, sprayed on to a cloth and wiped over the painted parts, before bringing to a shine with a clean cloth will finish the job.

Your clean, shiny bike will reward all this love and attention during your riding in 2018.

Cycling Awards

Portsmouth were pleased to be able to nominate Andy Henderson for this award based on his exceptional services as Secretary, which includes creating and maintaining the Club website www.portsmouthctc.org.uk, issuing weekly newsletters, and organising and running the Cathedral Challenge to attract and encourage new members and to introduce them to the delights of cycle touring. This challenge has been run for the last two years and the 2018 rides are currently being arranged.

Although his nomination was unsuccessful, the Club committee considered that he should be awarded the Hewlett Trophy for services to the CTC group.

Your local bike club, Portsmouth CTC, celebrated another successful year with its annual awards lunch at Brookfield Hotel on 21st January.

With 19 cups awarded, the full list will be published in the Club Magazine, but some of the highlights include: The Goodwood Cup – awarded to Paul Whitehead who has cycled over 5,000 miles in Audax events alone, including his London- Edinburgh- London ride, 895 Miles in under 100 hours.

He was joined at the lunch by his wife and their son, Samuel who received the Little Titch trophy for the best young rider in recognition of his 100 Kilometre Gridiron ride, crossing as many cattle grids as possible in the New Forest. As Sam was only 8 years old at the time this was a well earned trophy.

The Clubs newest trophy is the CCP Cup, donated by veteran rider C C P Davis, for the greatest distance cycled during the year, and was awarded to Mick King with 9,536 miles.

It's not all about distance cycled, however. There were awards for Most Enjoyable Ride; Robert Sebley, Best Event Organiser: Barry King-Smith, and the one trophy which nobody wants to win – The Wally Trophy.

A club member, whose name is not published to protect his embarrassment, headed for a waste bin after a lunch stop with his empty sandwich wrappers in one hand. This was a special waste bin designed to be one way so after realising that he has posted his mobile phone from the other hand instead of the wrappers he was not able to recover it.

Southbourne Shedders Seek the Sun Now the cold and miserable grey winter days are upon us, it is great to do something a little different and interesting, especially if it reminds us of summer days and warmer times.

Last Wednesday six Shedders from the Southbourne Men’s Shed did just that.

Setting off early they headed west for an excellent experience as VIP guests of Sunseeker International Yachts at Poole, Dorset.

They were welcomed into a very plush meeting room with plenty of Coffee and Danish pastries and shown a short film about the company and its range of world beating luxury yachts by Sunseeker’s Colin Nowles, the guide for the day .

Then it was ‘all aboard’ the chauffeur driven Merc’ for the official tour of the manufacturing facilities around Poole, stopping first at a large factory where they were shown how the furniture, from bunks to bookcases, for each boat is constructed using mainly plywood, MDF and HDF boards. Able to stop and chat with the skilled woodworkers they learned a lot about modern lightweight construction techniques. The workforce is so friendly and respectful and was pleased to stop and ensure the Shedders were enjoying the visit.

(They knew the Shedders were VIPs because on the backs of their Hi-vis jackets was written ‘VIP, World Headquarters Experience, Manufacturing Tour’) Back in to the Merc’ to the next factory which housed a vast machine for laminating

boards with the beautiful finishes we associate with ‘up market’ décor. On then to the upholsterers to see the production of soft furnishings, using the finest leather and durable materials, for the outside sun-decks as well as the interiors lounges and cabins.

Finally, before being taken to an excellent Christmas hot buffet lunch at one of Poole’s top restaurants there was time to see the design team at work building a mock up of a new yacht destined for a large boat show in February next year and the vast electronics division which was busy making switchboards and cable looms with miles of various coloured wires.

The afternoon was spent at the main factory on the waterside at Poole. In one of several buildings, a massive hangar, is a giant overhead crane for moving the huge yacht hulls during stages of construction. The wellfed VIPs were led around the vast hulls and then upstairs to view, from above, the construction, almost from scratch, of huge 95ft long luxury yachts.

Sunseeker work on four of these boats at a time and they are in various stages of construction. The first hull shell was being formed from fibreglass by a fast working team of specialists who are working to strict time limits to ensure the fibreglass for the hull skin, up to two inches thick in places, is laid before the resin ‘goes off’ and becomes too hard to work with. Next to this hull is another in an advanced stage with the

internal bulkhead walls, to strengthen the outer shell, in place along with the engine room and cabins.

The next one has decks, most of the wall panels and stairs and miles of exposed pipes and wires in place. The final boat of the four in this building has most parts fitted and is almost ready to be moved outside and prepared for final fixing and testing. All about the yard and in the water are many Sunseeker yachts of several designs from the smaller sports yachts measuring about 75feet long to the amazing top model at 155feet, ready for those very lucky few who are privileged to own such beautiful, craftsmen built luxurious vessels.

‘Just a perfect day’ during which the Shedders were treated extremely well, was

completed by climbing aboard a finished yacht and removing their shoes, to explore the delights that ‘the other half’ enjoy and receiving a ‘goodies bag’ of mementoes of the visit.

Sincere thanks and best wishes to Sunseeker International Yachts and especially Colin Nowles, a perfect gentleman, who delivered the full VIP treatment and made the day so pleasant, interesting and memorable.

Mengham Junior Planters

Last month, all of the children at Mengham Junior School grabbed their wellies and with the help of Site Manager Mr Brum set about planting 240 tree saplings in the school grounds.

This is a fantastic achievement and is such a special memory for us and the children to treasure; we will all be able to watch these trees grow into a lovely hedgerow to be shared with generations to come.

Thank you to every parent who supported this venture with ensuring children have wellies, coats and a big smile!

Don’t stop Wining SOUTH AFRICA

Beautiful Country, Stunning Wines Jonathan Rogers of VIN Wine Merchants in Emsworth looks at arguably one of the most picturesque wine growing countries in the world.

It’s true to say that South Africa has taken a massive leap in terms of changing the way wine is produced over the last twenty odd years. From biodiversity to the encouragement of single vineyards, the South African wine industry is a far cry from what it used to be.

For much of the 20th century winegrowers were governed by strict laws which prohibited any freedom of

experimentation with growing other varieties for example. KWV, the main culprit, was a giant co-operative set up to control all things Cape wine related, including exports and prices no matter what the quality. It was created in 1918 as a result of several negative factors, including, Phylloxera ( a beetle which eats the roots of the vines), which consequently had a negative impact on the huge British market for these wines. KWV on paper was a good idea, but it lasted far too long. Luckily it no longer exists and since the early 90’s that experimentation has been encouraged with many young and passionate wine makers seeking knowledge and inspiration from abroad. The Co-operatives still exist with around 60, however they have certainly raised their standards and are producing some excellent and value for money wines.

Its not just new plantings in new regions that are being encouraged. A system of reevaluation of older regions was developed and this continues to do so. Examples of these regions include Swartland, once

known for poor red blends, Darling which is a small enclave within Swartland, Lower Orange where significant investment has been put into the heavily important irrigation systems from the Orange River and trellis systems to protect the grapes from the intense heat and sunlight in this region. Olifant’s River region continues to impress with its great value whites and Robertson with its handful of Co-Ops producing wonderful wines, both red and white.

South Africa is a country which we have not really, fully experienced and realised the continued and consistent quality they

2. In a large jug place vegetable oil, milk and eggs mix well. Stir this mixture into dry ingredients.

3. Grate carrot and chop walnuts and add to this batter. Stir until moist add a bit more milk if required.

4. Pre heat oven to 180 degrees.

5. Place muffin cases into muffin pan and fill each case ¾ full. The batter made should produce 12 muffins. Sprinkle pumpkin and sunflower seeds on the top of each muffin.

6. Bake in the oven for 15- 20 minutes until well risen and cooked through.

Dry ingredients placed in mixing bowl and mix well.

Measure wet ingredients into large jug and mix well.

Stir wet ingredients into dry ingredients.

Add grated carrot and chopped walnuts to batter.

Havant Academy Year 10 Students trip to The Kings Church Over the last two weeks our Year 10 Hospitality and Catering Students have been giving up their free time to not only practice and develop their catering skills but to also provide a service to those less fortunate and carry out a good deed to the local community. They travelled down to The Kings Church in Somers Town, Portsmouth and spent the evening preparing, cooking and serving a three course meal. All food used was donated by local supermarkets for free instead of it going to landfill. Havant Academy students completed an evening takeover with Food Cycle Portsmouth and came up with the menus for each evening. Dishes consisted of vegetable soups, curry, cottage pies, bread and butter pudding and fruit crumbles. All students involved were an absolute credit to the school, they worked incredibly hard and under strict time limits to produce some wonderful food.

Community First works with many local businesses who regularly give up their time to upskill organisations that can benefit from their expertise. IBM spent a day with local organisations in January, at its Portsmouth location sharing their extensive knowledge on how to effectively market your organisation. For local charities, spending time with employees from IBM is a welcome and unique opportunity; participants learnt the Basics of Marketing, with topics such as branding, the importance of logos and telling your own story to get your message across in an effective way. Each Participant had their very own mentor from IBM with them for

the day who ensured they had the tools and information to formulate their very own marketing plan. IBM takes part in a rolling programme of support for charities throughout the year facilitated by Community First, the focus of the workshops are for staff from IBM to give something back to the community by passing on their skills to community groups. From Orphan to Mayor in easy stages

The life story of Councillor Ken Smith

Episode Three - The Pall Years Many times during my career people had said to me “Ken you ought to be in sales”, and so when Pall offered me the position of ‘Sales Engineer’ in the company’s aircraft division (APME Ltd) I was delighted to accept. However, in a very short time the Sales Manager left and I was immediately promoted to take over. In all, I worked for Pall for 26 years during which I became the Sales Director, then Commercial Director and Vice President.

The product which really engaged me and led to my remaining at Pall for the rest of my career, was “engine air particle separators” and their ability to exclude sand and dust from delicate engine mechanisms, particularly in helicopters. We at Pall knew how necessary engine air separators were for operations in sandy conditions and had been offering them to the British MoD for years. The response was always “no thanks, we don’t need them” even though the system had been in service since the seventies with many export customers.

Then, in late 1990 the Gulf War erupted and everything changed. We ended up reequipping the Chinook, Sea King, Puma, Gazelle and Lynx helicopters. We even re-equipped the British Warrior Tanks and Challenger AFVs but more of this later.

SANA’A, NORTH YEMEN The Yemeni Air Force operated the Russian built Mil Mi8 helicopter which had an inefficient Russian system. We had already decided to adapt our existing Sea King system to fit the Mi-8. This worked amazingly well and we were awarded a contract to upgrade all the Yemeni Mi-8 helicopters. We sent a very experienced two man team to Sana’a to carry out the installations at Sana’a airport.

All went well until I received an urgent message from Sana’a saying that one of our engineers had broken his leg and was unable to continue. The Yemeni response was typical – they confiscated our guys’ passports and

refused to allow them to leave the country unless/until the job had been completed. I arrived in Sana’a the next day and persuaded the authorities to release our men on the basis that I was a director of the Company and would personally take over the job. I selected the best available local mechanics and trained them in what was required.

Thankfully, they turned out to be a reasonably competent bunch. Work proceeded but I had to keep a very close eye on everything they did. One thing the authorities insisted on was that I would personally fly with the test flight crews when each installation was completed, just in case something went wrong!

This turned out to be an interesting experience. The flights involved flying from Sana’a (elevation 6000ft) through the mountains, descending to sea level and landing at Hodeida International Airport. The return to Sana’a involved climbing steeply to transit the mountains. I was pleased to record that the aircraft’s climbing performance was considerably improved by our system. Just as well because the return over the mountains proved to be ‘interesting’. A really steep climb was required and I caught more than one crew flying their shuddering helicopter at well below the safety speed required. When challenged they would smile at me and reassure me that “Allah was looking after us!”

The flight crews seemed to enjoy this trip too. They had fun scaring the life out of truck and bus drivers on the highway by flying head on at them! However, as we were descending into Hodeida to land, they would all start chewing ‘khat’, a common ‘recreational’ drug in the region. It contains an alkaloid, cathinone, an amphetamine-like stimulant, which causes excitement, loss of appetite, raised sexual drive and euphoria. Not the ideal substance for a flight crew to indulge in whilst still airborne! They would land in an isolated part of the airport and then, with the

engines still running and rotors still turning, they would all pile out and lie in the shade of the aircraft to cool off!

The task took about a month to complete during which I made many local friends and was a guest at lunch with the Air Force Commander who turned out to be the brother of Ali Abdullah Saleh, the then President of Yemen. An experience to remember.

The first Gulf War. 1991 In January1991 Iraq had invaded Kuwait and the region was preparing for war. As stated previously, we had equipped all UK helicopters and tanks with our new filter systems and I was asked by the MoD if I would be prepared to go to Saudi Arabia as a technical advisor to ensure that all the systems were working as intended.

So, on Thursday, January 10 1991 I arrived at RAF Innesworth to be kitted out for the trip to Al-Jubail in Saudi Arabia. I was to travel with a team of experts from a number of major companies.

At RAF Brize Norton where we boarded an RAF Tri-Star for the journey to Riyadh, Sitting there in my casual civvies I thought, not for the first time, ‘what the hell am I doing here?’

We arrived at Riyadh after a long, cold flight. We were told we would have wait until 08:00 the next morning for our onward flight to Al Jubail. Asking about overnight accommodation I was told by the Reception officer that there were no facilities and that our accommodation for the night was a line of plain thin mattresses on the floor,,,,,,, Great!

At 07:00 we trotted off with a dozen military guys and boarded an RAAF C130.

Destination, Al Jubail. To avoid being picked up by the Iraqi radar we flew at 50 feet, skimming aver sand dunes and the occasional oasis, frightening herds of camels and goats!

On arrival at Al Jubail I was amazed to see hundreds of helicopters, Patriot air defence missile batteries, tanks, and armoured vehicles. I had never seen so much military hardware in one place before.

The MoD emphasized that all civilians had to be out of the country before the shooting war started. I spent three days visiting every helicopter unit. On day four I was briefed by an Army Colonel that the

situation was changing hourly and that we could expect NBC alerts at any time. He also hinted that the Army was on the move and that by the following day most of the personnel and vehicles currently in Al Jubail would move up country. From this moment on all civilians had to have their full NBC kit with them at all times. As the day went on the weather just became worse. Streets were flooded, the desert became a soggy mess. I pitied the poor troops out there in their tents.

I was scheduled to do a final inspection all the Challengers and Warriors prior to leaving for the UK later that evening. I had planned to arrive at the airport in time for an 18:00 departure. It was then that I discovered that all the other guys had already left! They had been rounded up at midday to depart at 14:00 via Akrotiri. I was the only remaining civilian and it was now very close to the deadline. I was advised I would be travelling on a chartered B747 which had managed to get away from Kuwait when the Iraqi invasion started. It was being used to move troops and equipment from UK to Saudi.

The aircraft finally arrived at midnight.

Over 300 troops marched off to the sound of bagpipes. On boarding I asked one of the cabin crew where I should sit. He responded, “Wherever you like sir, you’re our only passenger!” I was exhausted and, finding a seat in first class, almost immediately fell asleep.

I awoke suddenly, to find myself in total silence and complete darkness! At that moment the cabin lights came on, the engines started again and we were off.

Looking out of the windows I saw an American F15 on each wingtip. The lights didn’t go off again until we were at 39,000 feet. The F15s stayed with us until we left Saudi airspace. Amazing!

I discovered later that we had been ordered to shut down the engines and extinguish all lights because a Scud missile attack had been launched by the Iraqis.

Apparently we had sat there, with the aircraft in darkness, for three hours!

The flight home to Lyneham was a long one and the only food on board was piles of Army rations but I didn’t complain. Unlike the thousands of troops still deploying for that War, I was on my way home! to be continued…

LIBRARY EVENTS HAVANT Tuesday 27 February / 7.30pm / £4 Mary Shelley's Frankenstein: Origins and Afterlives Charlotte Boyce - Senior Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Portsmouth - From the time of its first publication in 1818 to the present day, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein has been subject to numerous adaptations and re-imaginings.

What accounts for its extraordinary versatility and enduring appeal? To answer this question, this talk will first return to the origins of the text and its reflection of Mary and Percy Bysshe Shelley's Romantic ideals.

The talk will then explore the novel's extensive afterlife in literature, on stage and on screen, highlighting the way in which later iterations of the story subtly alter or refocus Shelley's original themes in response to shifting social and cultural concerns.

Monday 26th March 1845 for 1930 hrs ‘Controlling 9/11’ – The story of the US Air Traffic Control on this tragic day, presented by Phil Holt.

It was the day that changed our world forever. Everyone will remember what he or she was doing, when they heard of the attacks on New York & Washington D.C. Phil Holt was an Air Traffic Controller Monday 23rd April - 1845 for 1930 hrs - ‘The RAF Harrier in the Cold War’ presented by Group Captain (Retd) Jock Heron OBE. This talk will address the birth of the Hawker Harrier, and its predecessors, at a time of uncertainty over the future of manned combat aircraft and the continuing efforts by those who believed in their validity.

Jock Heron will describe the development of the aircraft dispersed concepts of operation, which went on to serve the country superbly at times of need. He will touch on the conflicting views within the Ministry of Defence in 1976, over the options for enhancing the Royal Air Force offensive support front line, when the intention was to allow the Harrier Force to run down by the late 1980s. However, a combination of circumstances subsequently led to a

for nearly 40 years, and was on duty on the 11th September 2001. In this fascinating presentation, Phil will tell the story of his colleagues at the Boston, New York, Washington D.C. and Cleveland Air Traffic Centres.

Phil’s experience as a controller, instructor, examiner and human factors specialist, gives an unprecedented insight into the most fraught 4 hours in the history of Air Traffic Control.

Nic explained that the image had been taken whilst on a day out in London with a couple of long term friends, going on board HMS Belfast. Cathedral Challenge The dates for the 2018 series of cycling's Cathedral Challenge have been announced.

Starting on 8th April this series of cycle rides is to help people who have not ridden in a group before or who haven't cycled for a while.

The rides start with a short 'get to know you' ride that includes a free bike check.

Each later ride progresses though longer distances , and tackles a series of challenges on the way.

The Bronze challenge – we all cycle from the Spring Centre at Havant to Portsmouth Cathedral and back – pretty much flat all the way.

Silver is Chichester Cathedral and back, and finally, in June , Gold - Winchester

THE INTERNET - BUY WITH CARE Back in about 2001 I was reading an article in the monthly music trade magazine about buying instruments on line, and what future did the musical Instrument bricks and mortar shop retailer have now people had started to buy on line.

In the article the chairman of one of the largest instrument distributors in the UK 'John Hornby Skewes' was asked what his view was on the growth of on line buying. He replied that he could not see the growth of instrument sales on line as you need to see and play an instrument to see that it suited you, the quality, sound, size fit etc...

Now sixteen years on, and hundreds of Musical instruments stores have closed down all over the country are the buying public any better off or any the wiser regarding the quality of what they buy on line? Over this period I have seen some right rubbish passed off as quality, with all sorts of problems.

The consumer laws were changed to protect the on-line sales buyer but this only works with known British retailers who will make sure that what you get is fit for purpose. But it still remains better if you go to your local instrument store, see, feel and play the instrument. What looks like a bargain in the photograph, could be trouble, and since 2001 I've seen lots of so called bargains with the buyer losing out!

The course outline: Textiles require a huge amount of time and resources to produce. Surviving evidence of textiles and textile technology is often scanty. The significance of textile production to our ancestors is easy to overlook. An understanding of the history of textiles is fascinating and gives insights into the levels of interconnectedness of ancient societies.

The study day will give an overview of the evidence for ancient textiles and an opportunity to have ‘hands on’ experience of some of the technology.

The leader of the Study Day has a strongly scientific background and is currently Chairman of the Cambridgeshire Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers. She has always had an interest in textiles and has been a weaver since 2010.

Please book your place in advance by emailing Pauline Blagden activities@cdas.info Kingley Vale is a well-known National Nature reserve within the South Downs National Park. Most visitors are aware of the ancient yew tree forest, Devils Hump Bronze Age Barrows and Iron Age settlements. Less well known is Kingley Vale’s past as a military training site particularly during World War 2.

During this walk we will explore a number of military sites from the 19th Century rifle range to Auxiliary Unit WW2 hideouts. We will look at the evidence that still remains of its military use and the efforts made to clear munitions from the site after WW2. The walk will be illustrated by the use of old maps, aerial photos, LiDAR images and other documents. Other more

ancient features such as field systems, settlements, enclosures and unusual barrows will also be revealed.

The walk will start and finish in West Stoke Car Park. From the Car Park to the entrance to Kingley Vale Nature Reserve is around 0.8 miles adding 1.6 miles there and back to the overall route. The full walk will take around three and a half to four hours.

A shorter option is possible taking about a mile out of the route. People who chose this option will have a break whilst the others take an "excursion" to see other sites.

The climb from the car park to the top is around 150 metres and is quite steep in parts so appropriate footwear should be worn. There are no facilities.

Most apprentices split their time between their employer and training provider, generally spending four days a week at work and one day a week in college studying.

This Autumn Barratt Homes is on a mission to ‘up the number’ of young people joining the construction industry through apprenticeships and dedicated training schemes and is undertaking its own tour to shout about the benefits.

Anthony Dimmick, community liaison manager at Barratt Homes, said: “Apprenticeships provide such a brilliant opportunity for young people who want to

get stuck straight in and start learning their trade in a hands-on way. They get the benefit of academic learning at college, as well as vital on-site experience from people who have been doing the job for many years. It’s a winning mix.”

Anthony has already attended careers fairs in Southampton, Eastleigh and Romsey to educate teens and their parents about apprenticeships. On October 17 he took his roadshow to Medina College’s careers evening in Newport and on October 26 he exhibited at the Isle of Wight College Future Careers Event organised on behalf of Hampshire Futures Children’s Services Department Hampshire County Council.

Anthony added: “We’re particularly keen to encourage more girls to consider a career in the construction industry. The sector has historically suffered with a gender imbalance and we’re keen to tip the scales.”

GRAND PIANO APPEAL The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre needs your help! The small place where big things happen wants to increase the quality and variety of music events it offers and has launched an appeal to raise money for a new grand piano. This comes ahead of The Spring receiving the first of four years’ worth of funding as a new National Portfolio Organisation for Arts Council England.

The Spring’s Director, Sophie Fullerlove said: “We are thrilled that The Spring has been recognised as a key provider of arts and cultural activity and awarded Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation status. As a key provider of arts and cultural activity in the Havant area we want to do more to entertain and excite and attract more people to take part in and enjoy the arts.

The Spring’s music events are always popular, but we want to be able to offer a better range and quality of choice. For our Grand Piano Appeal, we are hoping to raise £10,000 to cover the purchase and ongoing maintenance of a new baby grand piano.”

Round Hayling Race

The annual Round Hayling Race is having a massive makeover to transform it into the Hayling Island Sailing Club Boardsports Festival with much greater reach and broader activities for all ages to enjoy. Save the date in your diary for 22nd-23rd September, Hayling Island Sailing Club.

What’s happening at the Station Theatre?

HIADS is in mid rehearsal for Alan Bennett’s stunning play ‘The Madness of George III’. With a cast of 22, and 24 scenes following at a cracking pace this is a journey through two years in the reign of a king widely remembered only for his bouts of madness.

In fact he is the longest serving British king and presided over the loss of the American colonies and the defeat of Napoleon. Despite his eccentric manner and his feud with his son, the flamboyant Prince Regent, George III was genuinely loved by his subjects. He supported many scientists, painters and writers and largely created Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and the British Library.

Director Vicky Fox has assembled a very talented cast and the staging in the Station Theatre will transport and delight its audiences with humour and pathos in equal measure. Fortunately, for this period in the King’s life there is a happy ending.

Sam Kelly & Jamie Francis: Sam writes and arranges most of his material with his main musical collaborator, Jamie Francis. Rowlands Castle Garden Club Wednesday 9 May - SAID THE MAIDEN Said The Maiden are Jess Distill, Hannah Elizabeth and Kathy Pilkinton; three friends who discovered a mutual love of folk music when they reunited several years after spending their school years together in Hertfordshire. After tentatively performing a few songs at their local Folk Club, the group soon gained a great deal of interest on the local and national folk circuit, securing major support and headline slots at folk clubs and festivals around the country.

The trio has also opened for many great artists including The Full English, Jim Moray, Martin Carthy, Cara Dillon and Fairport Convention. Look Out For: The Boat Project, the Arts Council England initiative that formed part of the London 2012 Olympic Festival will be on display at Hollybank House during the first weekend of the trail.

‘Collective Spirit’ is made of thousands of donated wooden items and was built in Emsworth during 2011-12. It documents the lives of people within the South East of England, with many items coming from local residents.

Hollybank House will also host a collection of artists on the 28th – 29th April, and promises to offer visitors a special experience this year.

And, of course don’t miss all the local artists who open up their studios and gardens to welcome visitors to their homes, definitely worth a visit for a chance to see their work and spend some time in their company.
