In February 1987 apprentices from the Unicorn Training Centre at Highbury College created the replica Havant Mill waterwheel from Iroko hardwood weighing one and a half tonnes. The waterwheel was placed in a cradle in the mill race across the Lavant stream. The project was organised in conjunction with Chichester based Osborne Construction Group, which was building the De La Rue office block now know as Langstone Gate.

The apprentices were able to use a variety of carpentry and joinery skills in the wheel's construction and as a safety feature the central spindle was made with 12 sides so that it couldn't be turned.

Students at Havant Sixth Form College were also involved in the initial design and research of the replica waterwheel.

Local antiques expert John Cameron of BBC Bargain Hunt fame and as an apprentice who worked on the original replica, joined joined those involved, local historians and students from Park Community School to celebrate refurbishment of the Havant Mill Waterwheel at Langstone Gate by kind co-operation of owners Seaward Properties.

The project was made possible by the generosity and community spirit of Steve Cripps Managing Director of PMC Construction and Development Services who donated the resources to enable the work to be completed.

Report on my work locally and in Westminster As the year draws to a close I want to thank all residents for the support they have given me over the last year.

In particular to everyone who supported my three community events, the Havant Jobs, Apprentices and Careers Fair, the Older Persons Information Fair and my Small Business Awards, which will all be returning in 2018.

Meeting so many hard working and enthusiastic business owners from across the constituency at my second Small Business Awards last month was truly inspiring.

But from the hundreds of nominations made by Postcode Publication readers and local residents the Hayling Ferry, which won the overall Havant Small Business of the Year award really stood apart from the rest.

Colin Hill, Baker Trayte Marine and the whole Hayling Ferry team have worked tirelessly to ensure the business has not only become a commercial success but also a valuable community asset.

Others, such as the Lifeboat Inn, which won the Best Pub category, demonstrated remarkable charity fundraising, with publican Hayley Wallage and her team raising an astonishing £18,000 for the RNLI. However, it’s not all about raising money.

Kuru, winner of the Best Health and Beauty Business, offers opportunities for college students studying hairdressing the chance to work part-time to gain industry experience.

Another, Perfect Plumbing from Leigh Park, winner of the Best Local Tradesperson, has carried out free work for a local family which cares for a disabled child.

Every single firm had an inspirational story to tell, and from seeing the nominations it’s obvious to see why small businesses in our area remain so popular. So I was delighted that the judges singled me out for praise for my community events and for the University Conference that I held last year to encourage more young people to continue their education.

I hope all residents have an enjoyable festive period, and I look forward to continue working hard for you in 2018.

The Domesday Survey of 1066 states that the manor of Havant had two mills;The Hundred of Bosmere reads: “and the other stood on the site of that now occupied by the town mill”.

Within the manor of Havant was the smaller manor of Hall Place. In 1460 the Bishop of Winchester granted this to John Barbour and his inheritors, it included the Town Mill.

It passed down the inheritors until sold in the

18th century. In 1791 Thomas Raiss was the tenant miller famous for his Rat Powder. John Crassweller bought the mill in 1803 and re-built it in 1822; he bequeathed it to Jane Longcroft. It passed to Charles Longcroft and then Edward, who owned Havant Town Mill until his death.The mill stopped working in 1934 when his widow Helen Gertrude Longcroft sold it to Portsmouth Water Company. It was demolished in 1958.

Hampshire housebuilder takes apprenticeships advice on the road Staff from local house-builder Barratt Homes are touring Hampshire this Autumn in a bid to encourage young people to consider apprenticeships.

The company, which employs apprentices across the region, hopes to inspire more school and college leavers to consider apprenticeships as an alternative career path.

Apprenticeships allow people to ‘earn while they learn’, getting a wage from their employer while they work towards a nationally-recognised qualification. Most apprentices split their time between their employer and training provider, generally

spending four days a week at work and one day a week in college studying.

This Autumn Barratt Homes is on a mission to “up the number” of young people joining the construction industry through apprenticeships and dedicated training schemes and is undertaking its own tour to shout about the benefits.

Anthony Dimmick, community liaison manager at Barratt Homes, said: “Apprenticeships provide such a brilliant opportunity for young people who want to get stuck straight in and start learning their trade in a hands-on way. They get the benefit

of academic learning at college, as well as vital on-site experience from people who have been doing the job for many years. It’s a winning mix.”

Anthony has already attended careers fairs in Southampton, Eastleigh and Romsey to educate teens and their parents about apprenticeships. On October 17 he took his roadshow to Medina College’s careers evening in Newport and on October 26 he exhibited at the Isle of Wight College Future Careers Event organised on behalf of Hampshire Futures Children’s Services Department Hampshire County Council.

Havant Schools join up to cook together The first round of Rotary Young Chef Competition Club, was held at Park Community School, Saturday 11th November.

Well done also to all of the ten students who took part. They all produced the most amazing food - which the Judges enjoyed tasting.

Housing Law Advice - Protection of security deposits

Anyone who privately rents a property will know the familiar bugbear of paying a security deposit before the Landlord will give you the keys.

You may have received information about a ‘Deposit Protection Scheme’ but do you really understand what is happening to your money? Could you have a claim for compensation if your Landlord gets it wrong?

Since the Housing Act 2004 Landlords have had to take special measures when taking money off tenants for a deposit.

Most importantly a Landlord must protect your deposit with a government recognised scheme.

To date there are three schemes which are: TDS, DPS and MyDeposits.

These schemes are your guarantee that you will get whatever deposit you are entitled to at the end of your tenancy.

If the Landlord or Letting Agent holding your deposit goes bankrupt; the scheme will compensate you the value of your deposit. The scheme will also be an independent eye on any deductions your Landlord wants to make for damage to the property or rent arrears.

It is reassuring to know that the final decision will not be your Landlord’s but an independent body.

But Landlords and letting agents often get the law wrong when it comes to deposits.

The most common mistakes they make are: • Failing to protect the deposit within 30 days of receiving it • Failing to keep it protected for the entire time you are in the property • Failing to give you information about where the deposit is heldthe ‘prescribed information’

The Housing Act 2004 makes it possible for the tenant to claim compensation from the Landlord for breaching any one of these requirements.

If the Landlord gets it wrong, you could claim up-to three times the value of your deposit back!

This means that, if you paid a £1,000 deposit which was not protected within 30 days, you could claim up-to £2,000 compensation on top of your deposit (which must be returned in-full).

You can make your claim whether you are in the property or for up-to six years after the date your Landlord did something wrong.

entitled to compensation.

‘From the Harp’

From the Harp is a new social enterprise that is providing high quality interactive and meaningful activity to boost health and quality of life through harp playing. From the Harp is run by Alice McGarvie, a registered occupational therapist.

Alice uses lightweight harps and other instruments for people to make music together. The harps can be played sitting, standing or even in bed, and no prior musical experience or knowledge is necessary.

Alice says “I love this work. I give clients a harp to play and watch the magic happen: mood, chatting, happiness and laughter all increase when the harps are around”

Alice, based in Portsmouth, brings this service, unique to the UK, to care homes and health groups along the south coast.

CRAFT BEERS - Enjoy your Local Ales THE BEST BEER BOOKS OF 2017 Interest in craft beer continues to grow and we now have over 1,700 craft breweries in the UK brewing thousands of different beers. 2017 has seen a wide range of beer books being published. This year I have grouped the books according to subject matter. Whether you are new to beer or an old hand, hopefully you should find something of interest in the selection below.

Books make great presents so if you are struggling to find something for the beer lover in your life then why not give them a book?

BEER BOOK OF THE YEAR I have decided to institute my own equivalent of the Man Booker Prize for the beer book I have most enjoyed reading. No actual prize as such but the author would be welcome to join me for a pint in Emsworth.

This year’s winner is novice beer writer and licenced trade consultant Steve Finn for: The Great British Pub by Steve Finn.

SPF Media. £8 - Have you ever wondered why so many pubs have closed in recent years? Why do pubs vary so much in their standards? This book really lifts the lid on the licensed trade and debunks many of the myths about pub closures. Steve has spent most of his working life in the licenced trade and writes with great conviction and insight.

If you are at all interested in pubs then this book will provide a most rewarding read.

PUB GUIDES There are still around 50,000 pubs in the UK despite some 21 closing every week. If you want to be sure that the pubs you visit offer a good choice of real ale and food then these guides may be useful.

Good Beer Guide 2018. Ed. Roger Protz. Camra. £15.99 - This is the 45th edition of this indispensable guide for Real Ale enthusiasts. The guide lists over 4500 of the best pubs in the UK for Real Ale. There is also a comprehensive listing of all 1700 breweries in the UK. Local pubs that are listed include: Blue Bell, Coal Exchange and Lord Raglan, Emsworth; Robin Hood and Wheelwrights, Havant. Standards are really improving locally as last year only one pub, Emsworth’s Coal Exchange was mentioned.

Good Pub Guide 2018. Ed. Fiona Stapley. Ebury. £15.99 - This annual, which is now in its 36th edition, lists 5000 pubs in England, Scotland and Wales. The focus is mainly on pubs that offer good food and a pleasant all round experience. Local entries include: Old House at Home, Wheelwrights Arms, Royal Oak, Havant and Bluebell, Coal Exchange, Emsworth.

The Micro-pub Guide by Hardy M & Murray D. Kyle/Duncan Petersen. £14.99 - This is a new entry in the world of pub guides in that it lists the 200 new micropubs that have opened in the last 10 years.

A micro-pub is a small, independently owned, one room pub serving real ale.

Micro-pubs don’t offer food, TV or music and are often found in former retail premises in towns. We don’t have any in the Havant area yet but there are a considerable number on the Kent coast.

STYLE GUIDES If you visit a supermarket, off licence or beer festival you will be struck by the vast selection of beers on offer. One of the joys of beer is the large range of styles that are now available. These style guides will help you understand the differences between Pilsner and Helles, Belgian and German wheat beers and the huge range of IPAs on the market as well as all the other types of beers.

The Little Book of Craft Beer by Melissa Cole. Hardie Grant. £10 - A pocket sized guide to the 12 main categories of beer such as lagers, heavily hopped beers, dark beers and so on. The book contains in depth reviews of over 70 selected beers.

IPA by Roger Protz. Pavillion. £20 India Pale Ale (IPA) is one of the most popular styles of craft beer in the world today. This book charts the history of this beer from its origin in the C18 to the present day. The author also gives in-depth reviews of over 160 IPAs from around the world.

Lonely Planet’s Global Beer Tour Lonely Planet. £14.99 - Lonely Planet are best known for their travel guides which cover over 500 global destinations. This book takes you on a guided tour of the world’s leading beer producing countries plus a few not so obvious places such as North Korea.You will learn how to ask for a beer and say cheers in each country. At least one brewery and bar is featured with each nation’s entry. The book is well illustrated with many colour photos.

The Seven Moods of Craft Beer by Adrian Tierney-Jones. 8 Books. £12.99 Over 350 beers from around the world are reviewed in this book which categorizes them by mood: Social, Adventurous, Poetic, Bucolic, Imaginative, Gastronomic and Contemplative. The author chooses beers which complement each mood. The reviews are well crafted and the book is illustrated with line drawings.

50 Greatest Beers in the World by Tim Hampson. Icon. £8.99 - This book chooses some 20 different styles of beer from 11 different countries. The author writes indepth reviews of beers which include a very wide range from Imperial Stouts to lagers.

The World Atlas of Beer by Webb T & Beaumont S. Mitchell Beazley. £25 - This book focuses on 30 major beer producing countries and looks at their indigenous beer styles. There must be coming on for 20000

Storey. £13.99 - This is really an encyclopaedia of all things to do with beer.

Every possible aspect of beer and how to fully appreciate it is covered in this most readable and well-illustrated book. The book covers all the main styles of beer and food pairing, beer cocktails, glassware and much else. Extremely good value for money given the scope of the book.

THE BUSINESS OF BEER Beer is big business and whilst the industry is dominated by a few megacorporations there are a huge number of small craft breweries opening in almost every country in the world.

Beeronomics by Swinnen J & Briski D. OUP. £16.99 - This is an academic book which looks at the rise of the global beer industry. The 15 chapters cover a wide variety of themes including Beer and the Royal Navy, Belgian Wheat Beers and the rise of US craft breweries.

Brewing Revolution by Frank Appleton. Harbour. £19.37 - The craft beer revolution began in the USA in the 1970’s but it quickly spread across the border to Canada. This book tells the story of how the author started the Horseshoe Bay Brewery in British Columbia in 1982 and effectively kick-started the Canadian craft brew movement.

THE BREWING OF BEER Beer is a relatively simple product comprising of four ingredients: water, barley, hops and yeast. It has been brewed for thousands of years but brewers are still coming up with new styles and flavours. These books will help you understand the brewing process.

Miracle Brew by Pete Brown.

Unbound. £16.99 - This book devotes a lengthy chapter to each ingredient of beer: water, barley, hops and yeast and explains how each one is critical in the making of beer. It is a very well written and entertaining book by one of Britain’s best known beer writers.

Beer School by Garrett J & Evans B. Mango Media. £14.95 - The idea behind this book is that in order to appreciate beer you really need to understand how it is brewed and what the brewer was trying to achieve in making the beer. The book covers the brewing process in great depth and is aided by some very clear diagrams.

There is also a very comprehensive section on beer tasting.

The Secrets of the Master Brewers

by Jeff Alworth. Storey. £18.99 - This is a very wide ranging book in which the author looks at 26 different styles of beer and looks behind the scenes at the breweries that brew these beers. The book also includes recipes for home brewers.

MISCELLANEOUS These books don’t necessarily fit any of the above categories but are of interest to the beer lover.

Empire of Booze by Henry Jeffreys. Unbound. £12.99 - This well written and most entertaining book covers cider, port, gin, whisky, and champagne as well as beer. The book is a study of how Britain shaped the world’s taste for alcohol mainly through the role of British merchants. The author, who is a wine writer makes suggestions at the end of each chapter about drinks that he recommends.

Beer in so many Words by Adrian Tierney-Jones. Safehaven. £14.99 This is a selection of writing about beer which includes articles by literary giants such as George Orwell and Dylan Thomas. There are also extracts from books by leading beer writers, poets, historical texts and some articles from Victorian brewing journals which seem quite topical today.

CAMRA’S Beer Knowledge (3rd ed) by Jeff Evans. CAMRA. £9.99 This is a good stocking filler for the beer fan. The book is packed full of facts and figures about all things beery. It is a mix of hard facts about the industry plus much trivia.

Little Book of Beer Tips by Andrew Langley. Absolute. £4.99 - If you are looking for a little extra gift for a beer lover then why not slip them this slim volume of useful beer tips. The 50 ideas include recipes, serving tips and other uses for beer.

LOCAL INTEREST Brewing in West Sussex by David Muggleton. Amberley. £14.99 - A comprehensive study of breweries past and present in West Sussex. The book is well illustrated and also includes details of the 25 breweries now operating in West Sussex.

Portsmouth Pubs by Steve Wallis.

Amberley. £14.99 - This book is a whistle stop tour of 99 pubs that are currently open within the Portsmouth City area. All areas are explored from Old Portsmouth to Cosham. The book has plenty of good quality colour photos.

Promising construction career ahead for Charlie Barratt Homes has taken on a brand-new apprentice in Hampshire as part of its commitment to nurturing local talent.

The company has taken on 16-year-old Charlie Simmonds from Drayton as a carpentry apprentice at its Berewood Green development in Waterlooville.

Working alongside a team of experienced construction experts from Barratt Homes and Portsmouth Carpentry, Charlie will play an important part in creating the brand-new community. For the first time ever, Havant Borough Council has been awarded an RSPCA Gold Community Animal Welfare Footprint Award for the way in which it handles stray dogs.

The award recognises local authorities which have clear procedures in place to ensure both the welfare of stray dogs and a consistency of service.The work of the Animal Welfare Team at Havant Borough Council was awarded for the first time the highest possible gold award.

As well as recognising the day-to-day work of the team in collecting stray dogs and ensuring they are either reclaimed by their owners or re-homed, the award also recognises the educational and preventative campaigns, which are designed to reduce straying in the first instance, such as microchipping and neutering.

Each year Havant Borough Council’s animal welfare officers deal with dog welfare issues,

noise complaints in relation to dog barking and dog fouling complaints. It also deals with approximately 47 stray dogs and works with a number of re-homing charities to rehome unclaimed stray dogs each year. However, the majority are reunited with their owners.

Councillor Michael Wilson, Cabinet Lead for Environment and Neighbourhood Services said “I am delighted that the team has been recognised for the high standards of their animal welfare. Dog owners can assist the team in their work by ensuring that their pets are kept safe, are tagged and micro chipped and by picking up after them and depositing waste in the bin.

Havant WEA Photographic Presentation From Sue Young Members of Havant WEA ( Workers' Educational Association) recently enjoyed seeing photographs from different parts of the world, taken by well-known local photographer Mike Edwards. Members were treated to colourful and fascinating photographs of mountains, rivers, lakes and seascapes. Images of busy towns and cities with their urban lifestyle and people, contrasted with photographs of panoramic landscapes and snow covered mountaintops.

Titled “Around the World”, Mike’s presentation emphasized not only the diversity of our world but also its stunning beauty.

At the Spring Arts and Heritage Centre in Havant on Saturday, 4 November, Dr Geoffrey Mead ran an excellent Day School, organized

by Havant WEA, on the subject, “What is Landscape?” In the course of the day members of the large audience were taken on a journey through different types of landscape, ranging from countryside to seascapes, urban landscapes to wildscapes and in Dr Mead’s own words it soon became apparent that, “There is more to landscape than meets the eye.”

Landscapes are an integral part of our life; however, they can change over the years, not just through nature but also by man’s cultivation or development of the land.

As well as seeing stunning images of the South Downs, the coast and wildscapes, the audience was given references to landscapes in the Arts, with images from artists such as Turner and Richard Wilson, writers Defoe, Edward Thomas and the lesser known William Cobbett whose book “Rural Ride”, published in 1830, is still in print today. An interesting observation was the number of TV and Radio programmes such as Country-file that presently feature landscape, encouraging all generations to appreciate and enjoy our varied and beautiful country.

Hayling Island U3A wish all readers of this newspaper a Very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year. At this time of the year families gather together and we are asking if any of your family ever lived on Hayling Island between 1919 and 1946 we would love to hear their story. The members of Hayling U3A will be working throughout 2018 gathering information on what it was like to live ,or work on Hayling, or perhaps take an annual holiday on the golden sands of Hayling.

We are also keen to make contact with all families who lost loved ones during the Second World War, either in the forces or as civilians due to enemy action. In September /November 2019 we are hoping to publish a book illustrating the social changes which

took place on the Island as well as holding an exhibition .

This period of history was one of great change for everyone, and saw the introduction of electricity into every home along with piped water and mains sewerage.

Young people today can’t image what life was like without a telephone, iPad, or T.V. These years of great change in the home and the social life of all who lived on the Island need to be recorded before all memories are lost.

What if you miss the deadline?

The government announced in the last Budget (Autumn 2017) its plans to scrap the automatic £100 fine for late filing and replace the existing regime with a driving licence-style points system. This would look at the taxpayer’s recent compliance history before imposing a penalty for late submission.

At the time of writing we are waiting for the outcome of the government’s consultation on this matter, due in December 2017. However, we expect the current penalty system will apply to the January 2018 deadline.

HMRC will take a lenient approach to what it calls ‘reasonable’ excuses for late filing, for instance the death of a partner or close family member, a serious illness, or service issues with HMRC’s online filing service.

A final note: if, for any reason, you are unable to pay some or all of the tax due for 2016/17 by 31 January, you can arrange a payment schedule with HMRC for what you owe but this should be done at least fourteen days beforehand.

Cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats in two days From Mike Skiffins and Wilf Forrow, Portsmouth CTC

Could you cycle the length of Britain in less than 2 days? Well Dominic Irvine has actually done it, breaking the tandem record that has stood for nearly half a century. And on 12th October, he told Portsmouth CTC how he did it, at our winter Club evening, which replaces Summer evening cycle rides.

Lands End to John O' Groats. known as LeJog or the End to End, was 842 miles using the route Dominic and Charlie Mitchell chose, and they completed it in forty-five hours, eleven minutes to beat the previous tandem record by five hours. Almost ten per cent!

Dom explained that he had made two previous attempts, in 2012 when they were just not fast enough, and in 2014 when the ride was cut short by sickness.

As every stop seemed to end up at least 10 minutes, they only stopped three times for about ten minutes each. They grabbed food bags on the go from the support team standing on the roadside, and eating it on the move. No time for sleep, but they did swap positions frequently to give the front rider some respite from navigating and steering.

Such an achievement took months of planning and training, and was a massive team effort. Not only did they have eight people travelling with them on support, but they enlisted the help of many experts.

To advise on nutrition – it is estimated that each of them burned 22,500 calories in the two days, nutritionist Renee McGregor from University of Bath, and Dom's coach scheduled some high intensity fasted rides. That is, 5.00 am start, ride for two and a half hours before a small breakfast, a small lunch, then nothing to eat until he did it again in the evening. This was just to get his weight down!

On longer rides of over 20 hours they would nibble every half hour – but in that twenty hour period they would have used 10,000 calories.

Apparently fruit cake, cheese sandwiches, and chocolate coated Brazil nuts help the riders along.

They also had a coach who planned all their training, some of it on a static turbo trainer. For ten months they trained hard for up to forty hours a week. To fit this in around a day job they would be up at 5.00 am to train before work and again at 7.00 pm for yet more.

Family life has to be built round this schedule. Usually in bed by 10.00 pm.

Whilst training on the road they built up an enormous camaraderie and also enjoyed some wonderful scenery.

They both live in Hampshire but training rides have taken them up the Welsh borders, The Lake District, the Cotswolds and the Southern coastline from Hastings to Lyme Regis.

And their tandem was a hugely expensive custombuild by a leading tandem specialist.

Finally, the weather! Pouring rain and a head wind would have scuppered the attempt and the only way to achieve this is when there is a weather depression over Ireland which draws the wind in the direction they needed to go. So they had a meteorologist on the team, and waited until the best time, Dom explained that whatever the initial reasons for undertaking this record ride it had been one of the most rewarding things in which he had been involved.

At the end of his presentation, the club agreed that this was one of the most inspirational talks they had ever heard.

Q: I don't know how people can ride a bike for miles. I get quite sore in the saddle area after a few miles. Do they have special saddles?

A: Saddle soreness is not unusual, and yes, there are different saddles for different purposes, and also one size does not fit everyone.

Let's look at saddles!

When you sit on a chair – which is basically a square seat – your weight is supported by your upper legs as well as your bottom.

However, you can't move your legs up and down to work the pedals on a square seat so the two front corners are cut away to leave a “T” shape, with the tail of the “T” just there to stop you slipping off the weight bearing cross part.

Soreness comes from three areas: Pressure on your 'sit bones', chafing or friction between your legs and the tail piece, and pressure on the nerves and blood vessels between your legs pressing on the tail piece.

In the early days saddles were of leather which either gradually moulded to your shape, or you just got used to it (a bit like buying new shoes ) but there have been great strides in saddle design.

Modern saddles have built in gel pads to protect your 'sit bones', and also they come in different widths to suit various bone shapes. For example there are now 'women

specific' saddles to suit the different width of a lady's pelvis.

To reduce chafing the 'serious' riders

more comfortable. It may be just right for short local rides but if you find that it is uncomfortable after a few miles, then it

wear Lycra shorts. These also have an extra seat pad built in, but the Lycra stays put on the legs and is a bit shiny so that it doesn't chafe. The saddle,too, can have a narrower 'tail' so your legs don't rub against it.

Finally, to avoid or reduce pressure on the 'delicate bits' between the legs modern saddles are made with a groove- like depression down the middle, and in some cases this groove goes right through so there is actually a hole. In warm weather this allows extra ventilation to reduce perspiration and chafing.

It is a mistake to think that a big, wide saddle with plump cushions is going to be

probably isn't for you.

A saddle that actually fits, and has padding in the right places with pressure relief where you need it is the real answer, but you may still have to ride it and get used to it for a short time, just as you would with a pair of new shoes.

HAYING ISLAND COMMUNITY CENTRE OPENS NEW EXTENSION

Hayling Island Community Centre Association is proud to declare their new building officially open for business, after a special ceremony in November. Cllr Andy Lenaghan, long term supporter of the Community Centre, was invited as the guest of honour, cutting the ribbon on the new annex, and leading everyone through to unveil a plaque.

Centre Manager, Tania Jones, gathered everyone together to say a huge thank you to the local community who have supported the new building through the Buy a Brick Scheme and other fund-raising efforts. The Roll of Honour is on display featuring all the names of people, groups and organisations who have taken part.

Postcode Publications were especially thanked for a large donation towards the project, which will help provide new cricket facilities in time for

next season.

The annex consists of a large community room upstairs, with kitchen and toilet facilities, and the Café, T @ the Park, downstairs. The café is now open every day from 830-430pm serving delicious cooked breakfasts, sandwiches, paninis, home-made sausage rolls, quiches, soups and mouth watering cakes and treats. With lovely views across Hayling park and comfy sofas, you will be given a warm welcome from the café team. The extra space will enable more groups and services to be run from the Centre, which is so well supported by the community.

“I am particularly proud of the Team and what they have achieved, having been the Councils representative on the board of the Community Association. Tania, Tina, Mandy and Lyn have all put so much effort into raising the funding needed.”

New National Lottery Funded Project launches in Havant On 14th December Community First launched it’s new Big Lottery Funded project called Positive Pathways. Positive Pathways will work with local Havant Borough residents who need a little bit of help to volunteer in their community, to increase participation in volunteering especially for those who are long term unemployed or want to reconnect with their community but do not have the confidence to do it alone.

Offering team volunteering as well as personalised training and mentoring into individual placements, Positive Pathways will build on the successful of the Havant V Team that supported many local people into volunteering. Helping people to gain valuable work experience, learn new skills, make new friends, support local charities and community groups, and all whilst improving their own health and well-being.

The launch Leigh Park Community Centre began with presentations from Positive Pathway clients, Havant Job Centre and South East Hampshire Better Local Care. Janet Duggan, Volunteer Service Manager at Community First commented “we are so excited to be launching our brand new project called Positive Pathways after being awarded £428k by the Big Lottery Fund. Our new team of three workers will work with local people who feel vulnerable and isolated especially after a period of ill health or being out of work for a long time”.

Vegetarian moussaka with mushrooms and puy lentils This recipe is a vegetarian take on a meat favourite and I am delighted to say it is just as satisfying and definitely much healthier and lower in calories. I hope you will find it an interesting change and be able to use it for entertaining friends as well.

Ingredients 150 g dried puy lentils 250 g chestnut 250 g small Portobello mushrooms 500 g white mushrooms 1 red pepper 1 courgette 2 onions 6 clove garlic I tinned chopped tomatoes 1 tsp dried mixed herbs 2 aubergine 150 g grated Parmesan cheese 75 g wheat germ 4 eggs Method 1. Finely chop garlic and dice onions.

2. Wash puy lentils and cover with boiling water and add vegetable stock cube. Heat until boiling and then cook with lid on a simmering heat for 20 minutes or until cooked. Stir frequently and add extra water if needed and do not allow to boil dry.

3. Heat non-stick pan with 1 tbsp of olive oil.

Cook 1 diced onions for 2 minutes until it starts to soften then add the garlic and cook until it starts to turn brown. Add tin of tomato and dried herbs and season with pepper and salt. Cook on a low heat for 5 minutes.

4. Slice aubergine into approx. 5 mm rings.

Break 2 eggs into a bowl and beat lightly. In a second bowl mix 75 g of wheat germ and 75 g of grated Parmesan cheese. Dip each slice in the egg and then dip in the wheat germ and Parmesan mix and place on baking sheet covered with silicone sheet. Cook in preheated fan oven at 180 degrees for 7 minutes and then turn and then cook for a further 7 minutes.

5. Slice mushrooms, dice red pepper and courgette. Heat non-stick sauce pan on medium heat and cook onions until soft add garlic and cook for a further 2 minutes, Add red pepper cook for 2 minutes and then add mushrooms and courgette. Add seasoning and continue to cook until vegetables cooked through. Stir in the cooked lentils to this mixture to make the filling.

6. Using a rectangular roasting dish (25 cm x 18 cm approx.) pour the tomato sauce to cover the base of the roasting dish and then layer the cooked aubergine slices on top of the tomato sauce. Pour the cooked vegetable and lentil mixture on top of the aubergine and then cover with another layer of aubergine. Make a mixture of yoghurt, Parmesan and 2 eggs. Mix well season with pepper and pour over the top of the final aubergine layer.

7. Bake in fan oven on 180 for 20- 25 minutes or until starting to caramelise.

Wash and cook lentils in boiling water with stock cube

Dip sliced aubergine and dip in egg and coat with wheat germ and Parmesan

Cook vegetables and stir in lentils to make filling

Layer cooked aubergine on the tomato sauce

Pour the yoghurt, egg and parmesan mixture over the final layer of aubergine

More professionals take up mentoring with EBP South

Activate mentoring is taking place at a school

EBP South has secured funding to expand the delivery of their Activate Mentoring Programme, now going into its fourth academic year this September.

There are an increasing numbers of schools recognising the value of 1-1 mentoring, there is more demand than ever for working professionals to take up mentoring and give back.

This year there has seen an 80% increase in the number of schools across the Solent area signing up to the Activate Mentoring Programme with EBP South.

Mentors act as positive and trustworthy role models to 14 – 16 years olds, in local schools, that are at risk of not achieving their potential.

They provide up to an 1 hour a week during term time to go into a school and support a young person they’ve been carefully matched to.

Activate Mentoring’s aims are to give students confidence in achieving their potential, build their resilience, and assist them in future planning. It plugs the gap between the qualifications students gain at school and the soft skills which employers value; such as proactive problem solving, making a business pitch or speaking to customers on the phone.

Doug Atkins the Mentoring Programme Manager said ‘Our mentors want to support young people in a way they hadn’t been supported themselves when they were at school.

They believe young people need someone to give impartial support at a time they’re being told what to do by a lot of different people.”

EBP South are delivering the Activate Mentoring Programme as part of The Careers and Enterprise Company’s national effort to support 25,000 young people across the UK at risk of disengaging from school by unlocking their employment potential.

The Difference A Day Makes!

A fantastic team of volunteers gave up their time for a day in September to decorate the hall at Leigh Park Community Centre. Leigh Park Community Centre is used for many group activities and can be hired out for private functions.The centre is currently undergoing a programme of renovations and development in order to provide the surrounding area with a welcome and inviting community space for the local people to enjoy.

Positive Pathways, funded by the Big Lottery Fund, works with people in Havant who need a little bit of help to volunteer in their community, to increase participation in volunteering especially for those who are long term unemployed or who want to reconnect with their community but do not have the confidence to do it alone. Pfizer take part in a rolling program of volunteer events around the Havant area organised by Community First and have helped many charities and organisations. Lorraine a volunteer with Pfizer said, “It’s

great to see the centre being updated. My family has lived in this area all their lives and have used the centre for many functions in the past, it has been rewarding to be able to make a difference and to be a part of the renovations.” Martin from Pfizer said, “I’ve enjoyed today, it’s nice to give something back that will benefit people from the community.” Facilities Manager at Leigh Park Community Centre, Dan Moore said, “We are so grateful to the volunteers for their hard work and enthusiasm, they have made a huge difference to the hall making it a brighter and more inviting space for our visitors to enjoy.Without the support of local businesses, many charity and community groups would struggle.

old Leukaemia patient raises £20,000 in year one for his charity, ‘Kicking Cancer for Charlie’

Charlie and his family started their charity, Kicking Cancer for Charlie, after he was diagnosed with Leukaemia in 2014. We’d lost other family members to cancer so it was a very real prospect.”

Despite being only four months into his treatment, with no hair and a nose tube and central line fitted, Charlie was adamant that like all his nursery friends he wanted to start school.

He really has had a rough few years too, where at times his body just wasn’t agreeing with the chemo, he caught shingles, had glandular fever...”

Just 12 months ago and aged seven, Charlie told his mum that he wanted to start a charity to help other poorly children. For an eight-year-old he is wise beyond his years.”

In September Charlie organised a 33 mile ladies charity walk between Southampton General and QA Hospital, raising approximately £6,500. At the end of the walk, Charlie and his family handed over £400 worth of toys to QA Hospital.

“Charlie wanted to give something back to the hospital that has played such a big part of his life over the years.”

It was only six-weeks ago that Charlie had his last chemotherapy session. Charlie even said to me, ‘Mum – what if I get poorly again?’ His line has become a part of him – it’s our safety blanket.”

With his hair grown back Charlie is looking to the future.

THE CAT & RABBIT RESCUE CENTRE Hulky Bear Hello it’s me again your out and abouter reporter for the Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre, Hulky Bear.

Welcome to my final report of 2017. I don’t know where this year has gone it has flown by so quickly.

Some sad news to start I lost a good friend a few weeks ago.

Solomon passed away suddenly he was one of the out and abouter cats for about 20 years. I am told he just turned up here and never left. He didn’t want the staff to touch him but liked to sit and watch them working.

He loved all the other cats and we are missing him lots as he used to snuggle up to us in the garden room and always had some great stories about the centre to tell.

One of my other friends here is Ada Pretty she also has lived here for about 20 years and as a lady we do not talk about her

age.A few months ago she had a very bad eye. It made her very sad. Our vet had to remove the eye. She recovered well but I wanted to do something to cheer her up after her operation. I started a training programme for her on how to do some reporting under my supervision of course. She is now writing features and coming along really well. Losing her eye has made her even more pretty and she is now looking amazing.

The staff here have now put all our rabbits and guinea pigs in their winter accommodation it get very cold out in the rabbit enclosure so they need to in more sheltered pens during these cold months.

Don’t forget we stop homing over Christmas, all the animals will be looking forward to special treats on the day. Of course no turkey bones for the cats as it can cause injuries but some fresh turkey for lunch will be on my present list.

I want to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and New Year. I hope to see you all in 2018.

He came to the Centre in July 2017 after his owner who loved him very much passed away.

He is very friendly and loves to have lots of fuss and cuddles. His favourite time of day is the morning when the staff go in to check the rabbits. He runs over so excited that someone is coming to talk to him. He has a special bed he sleeps on complete with a pillow and loves his food. He would love to be homed as either a single house bunny or he can be bonded with a spayed female. He is un-neutered as our vet feels he is too old to be put through the operation. He would love to find a forever home to live out his golden years and be loved again. Please if you think you can offer Double Chocolate Magnum the new home he so desperately deserves, please do not hesitate to contact us here at the Centre.

From Orphan to Mayor in easy stages

The life story of Cllr Ken Smith

Episode Two

The RAF Years My basic reason for wanting to join the Royal Air Force was my fascination with aircraft. Naturally my dream was to become a pilot but the medical was very strict and my eyesight let me down (eventually I did gain a pilot’s license, but more of that later).

So I opted to train as an Air Force engineer, a decision that ultimately shaped much of my life.

Having taken and passed the entry exam, I was told to report to RAF Halton, the RAF’s number one school of Engineering RAF Halton had three intakes, or entries, each year. Mine was the 87th Entry and that number determined one’s seniority within the system. It was a tough three years, the discipline and the training being of the highest standard. If a man failed any one of the interim exams he was back coursed to the entry behind to retake the exam. If he failed again he would be dismissed from Halton. A tough regime but that’s how it was.

I graduated in 1960 and emerged as a fully qualified aircraft engineer. The ‘Brats’, as we were known as, benefited from accelerated promotion. In my case, aged twenty, I found myself in charge of men who’d been in the RAF for twenty years!

Ultimately I served in the RAF for thirteen years – I’d signed on for twelve, but was only seventeen at the time and they only started counting Service years when you were eighteen!

My first posting was to RAF Wattisham which was the home of the famous Black Arrows display team, the predecessors of the Red Arrows. This was Treble One Squadron, equipped the all black Mark 6 Hawker Hunters. However, we were to become the second squadron in the RAF to receive the English Electric Lightning 1a so I was sent on an engineering course to learn about these incredible aircraft.

In 1962 it was decided that in times of high tension our V Bombers would be dispersed to suitable airfields all over the country. Wattisham was chosen a a dispersal field for the Avro Vulcan and that meant that we had to have a Vulcan “expert” available

to take charge of any Vulcans that might arrive. This was made top urgent by the Cuba missile crisis followed by the assassination of JFK. I was chosen as the Wattisham “expert” and was dispatched to RAF Waddington, home of the new Vulcan B2. I really liked the Vulcan and to everyone’s surprise, including mine, I came top of the course! Fortunately, the crisis fizzled out and my skills on the Vulcan were never called upon.

During my time at RAF Wattisham we enjoyed many detachments to Germany, Malta and Cyprus but in 1964 I was posted to RAF Changi, Singapore, assigned to 48 Squadron. This was the time of “the Indonesian Confrontation” and 48 Squadron was tasked with supporting our troops throughout Malaysia and Borneo.

With the Indonesian confrontation at its peak there was real concern that Indonesian infiltrators would sneak ashore at night.

Changi airfield was vulnerable to this type of attack. Armed patrols along the beaches at night were ordered. We organized six man teams to patrol the beaches, armed and ready. I have lasting memories of being in command of such a team and subjected to all the night time jungle noises. I thought the jungle was more frightening than the Indonesians!

I returned to the UK in February 1966,

posted back to RAF Wattisham where I joined No.29 Squadron which was just converting from the Gloster Javelin to the Mark 3 Lightning.

By then I had become an Senior Non Commissioned Officer (SNCO) and my final job in the RAF was to take charge of 29 Squadron’s first line, where all the flying took place. The SNCO in charge, at minimum an experienced Sergeant, was ultimately responsible for the efficient running of the flight line ensuring that aircraft and crews were available and that all the documentation was correct. Heaven help the line boss if the system did not function smoothly and effectively.

My duties included debriefing the aircrew after each flight to ensure that the 2nd line teams were fully informed as to any defects. I loved it but it was a very responsible job and you had to be on your toes. Due to the pressure and intensity of this role, most people only lasted a year but it suited my temperament and I did it for my last three years in the RAF. I enjoyed my time with 29 Squadron but, by then, it was 1970 and my time in the Service was over.

A Civilian Again Even before I stepped out of uniform I had found myself a job with a company called Fairey Aviation. Fairey was famous for building several remarkable aircraft including the Fairey Delta 2 which, for a time, held the world speed record. However, those glory days were over when I joined the company in 1970. By then they manufactured sophisticated hydraulic flight control systems.

I was one of four field engineers. Each engineer specialised on one specific aircraft type and I was responsible for the Jaguar. It was a very good first job in civvy street. I had a company car as I had to travel frequently back and forth between Fairey’s base at Heathrow and the British Aerospace facility at Warton. I also went regularly to

Toulouse and Istres in the south of France for the Jaguar flight testing.

In 1972 I was called by the Chief Designer and advised that the AV-8A Harriers operated by the US Marines in Beaufort, South Carolina were having serious control problems. A specialist was required to fly to Beaufort ASAP but our Harrier specialist was unavailable so would I be prepared to go in his place? I thought long and hard for about ten seconds then said YES! In no time at all I was on my way to my first visit to America.

I was met at Beaufort (they pronounced it ‘Bewfort’) by the McDonnell Douglas rep who took me to an hotel and told me to rest up, he would call for me the next morning at 0700. His parting comment was that you cannot live and work in the USA without a car and suggested I call Hertz and have them deliver me one. Well, my company car in the UK was a 1.1 litre Ford Escort. Imagine my surprise and delight when I discovered my new wheels were a brand new Ford Gran Torino (remember the TV cop duo Starsky & Hutch?) with a 5 litre V8 engine. Wow! The job entailed the Marine engineers removing the flight control units from every aircraft and setting them up in their hydraulic systems workshop. I stripped the units down and rebuilt them using the new components. Each unit had to undergo a detailed and comprehensive test routine to ensure that all was OK. This took about a day for each aircraft. I have to say I had a few nervous moments as the first modified Harrier roared into the air!

I spent a month in South Carolina and enjoyed every minute. Shortly after my return to the UK I received a job offer from the Aircraft division of PALL Europe which I accepted because it had become clear that Fairey Aviation was in decline. Once again I was making a move that would drastically alter my life but I had no idea then just how radical this change would turn out to be.

Specially trained volunteers are matched with members of their own communities, and can deliver a wide range of library materials including large print, audio books in various formats, reminiscence collection items and specialist books such as titles specifically designed for anyone living with dementia.

Benefits to volunteers and library customers Age UK says that about a million older people suffer from loneliness, “an often devastating state of profound unhappiness”, and that feelings of isolation could be a sign of underlying ill-health. The leader of Britain’s GP’s, recently warned that loneliness is as bad for health as long-term illness.

Our volunteers visit their customers usually once a month and good friendships have been formed through this service. As one volunteer put it – “ The gift of HLS; the giving and receiving of books enriches both our lives. We are both reading authors recommended by the other! We have a tangible reason for getting to know each other, a very real reason for my visits and a definite double-positive as a result. For me,

One lady said that the selection was better than she could choose herself. A frail older couple told us “how wonderful it is to have a visit from someone who is not visiting because of medical needs but because of something pleasurable.”

On Monday 6th November we were joined by Chris Purcell and his wife Louise.

Chris was a 22-year-old Able Seaman on HMS Sheffield when it sank during the Falklands War. On 4 May 1982 twenty crew were killed when an Argentine Exocet missile hit the 4,100-tonne destroyer, which had 300 people on board. Mr Purcell visited Year 10 and 11 students in their assembly and also other year groups during their history lessons. He described what happened and how the Royal British Legion have been instrumental in his recovery.

How many of us ignore warning signs such as pain, discomfort and/or inflammation. Our bodies are incredible, and they will do all that they can in order to look after us if we give it the right tools. But sometimes, they become overwhelmed and disease becomes real. It’s a whole lot harder to come back from that situation and you could feel as if you are treading treacle for a while. Putting the effort in to stay

healthy is Key. However, do not lose heart if you are already suffering. In my clinics, I see people who are quite unwell, really reverse their health challenges time and time again. All I am saying is, if you have the privilege (and it is a privilege to be healthy) then try your best to keep it that way.

Regards exercise, it has to be something you love, otherwise you wont keep it up. Dance, individual sports, team sports, running clubs, biking and hiking are just a few that you could choose from. Postcode Publications Apex students delighted with bespoke sleigh build Park Community School through its Apex Construction Skills Centre has designed and built a Christmas sleigh for the local community on Leigh Park.

A group of year eleven students studying at the Apex Centre were responsible for the majority of the sleigh construction and had specific design requirements that made the project more complicated. The sleigh needed to be flat-packed for easy transportation, building access and storage purposes, presenting a testing challenge but with the guidance of the teachers, the students realised this goal could be achieved through good planning and design.

The main skills involved were carpentrybased allowing students to develop their own practical ability and problem- solving skills.

the iconic flame red colour, allowed students to learn techniques and about different types of paint. There was a lot of Mathematics involved as accuracy was essential to ensure that all joints are square and to make sure that up to four adults could fit and sit comfortably and safely in the sleigh.

"When asked to complete this project, I happily agreed to help. Not only does it help our local community get into the festive spirit, but it is also a great learning opportunity for our students," explained Daniel Payne, Head of Design & Technology at Park Community School.

The students are immensely proud of their achievement and saw it in-situ at The Leigh Park Christmas Grotto where it is currently on display and will be for years to come.

Team Building with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) is seeking local businesses to put forward groups of employees for specially designed team building activities in a stress-free environment outside of the office.

The charity’s Corporate Fund-raiser, Ray Southam, has designed some brilliant activities for teams to participate in.

The activities are based around communication and team work and help to educate people about the work of the Critical Care Team.

‘We’ve been trialling our team building programme with local companies and businesses around the county and so far, it has been really well received. It’s great to see groups of colleagues working together and ultimately having fun.

Team building is a fantastic way to build positive relationships among co-workers.’ Ray Southam commented.

‘Our team building exercises have proven to be very

popular. We’ve seen groups of colleagues working through the tasks together successfully, and building their work relationships in the process. Through these exercises we hope to continue to spread the word about the work of the Air Ambulance.’ Ray Southam continued.

HIOWAA is keen to hear from businesses and organisations who would be interested in participating in these activities, in return for a small donation.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance flies seven days a week, up to nineteen hours a day, and attends an average of two to three missions a day, many of them lifesaving. The charity receives no government, statutory or national lottery funding for routine operations, and is entirely dependent on gifts received from members of the public, companies and grant-making bodies to keep the Air Ambulance flying and saving lives.

A beautiful sunny day made perfect conditions for a team of 16 employees from a large Havant-based business to spend the morning with Hayling Island Horticultural Society (H.I.H.S) at Hayling College, helping with their Growing Together project.

Lockheed Martin UK - Integrated Systems (LMUK IS) regularly takes part in volunteering activities organised by Community First, and today’s task was to clear a pond, poly-tunnel and an allotment area ready for students to start planting and growing their own food.

The Growing Together project was set up by Bill Biggs and Ray Jones from H.I.H.S with the objective of crossing the intergenerational divide - enabling children and adults to learn and have fun together.

Lockheed Martin split into teams, two groups worked hard digging out the overgrown allotment and polytunnel that will enable the college to run activities learning basic gardening and teamwork skills.The other team cleared the overgrown pond area making this a more inviting environment for the students.

Bill Biggs from H.I.H.S was delighted, saying “The team from Lockheed Martin have worked non-stop and have made a brilliant difference in just one morning.The poly-tunnel looks amazing, the pond area has been transformed and the fruit and vegetable cage is unrecognisable.We can’t thank Lockheed Martin enough and their help has been an inspiration to the students at Hayling College.”

today.When we heard about the Growing Together project at the college, we were keen to help to keep up the momentum.

The Power Of Tin, Charity Exhibition and Auction Event Since its Royal Opening back in May 2007 the charity has worked with over 26,000 people on various creative projects, workshops and events.

They are networked with over 300 talented professional makers from across the UK and 21 different local makers have benefited from having their studio at the bespoke venue.

To end their 10th Anniversary celebratory year on a high, on January 18 2018, they are partnering with Rowans Hospice to host a fundraising exhibition and auction event.

Ingeniously they’ve taken inspiration from the number 10, and have themed their event around “Tin” which traditionally is associated with 10th anniversaries.

For the event, they are inviting designer-makers and artists to take inspiration from anything from the humble baked bean tin to a vintage biscuit tin.

Contributors may want to decorate small tins, use the material to make something new or interpret

What’s on the theme in their own way to create a unique and inspiring piece of craft. All items made will be auctioned at the event in January. To keep things interesting none of the submissions will be named with their maker so the event will be a ‘blind auction’. With reserve prices starting at just £20.00, this gives everyone the opportunity to own a piece of unique art and in turn raise money for both charities and the artist who made the piece.

Photographs of all “Tin craftworks” made will go into an online gallery where people can place their bids. Bidding will continue at the special preview event that will take place on the 18 January 2018, with the highest bidder winning.

Following unanimous agreement by Members at the recent Rowans Hospice Annual General Meeting, Marcus Patrick has officially become a Patron of Rowans Hospice.

Marcus has already supported several events this year including the official opening of Rowans Living Well Centre in May, the Moonlit Memories Walk in June and he also abseiled down the Emirates Spinnaker Tower in aid of Rowans Hospice in July. Marcus originally expressed an interest in becoming a patron of the charity after he visited Day Care with the Kings Theatre panto cast last Christmas, however, this had to be formally agreed at the AGM in September.

Ruth White, Chief Executive of Rowans Hospice, welcomed the decision. She said: “I am delighted that Marcus has agreed to become a Patron of Rowans Hospice. He was brought up locally and he has an affinity with the work of the Hospice. When he visited Day Care he was very at ease, spending time chatting with the patients and nurses, we know he will be a great asset to the organisation.”

It’s got all the usual outrageous characters in it but I must say the ugly sisters this year, well they really are u… oh what’s that… they’re behind me!!... as I was saying… the ugly sisters this year are “Unbelievably talented”, and not at all scary in any way.

The show runs from the 13th to the 20th January with performances at 2:30pm and 6:30pm on Saturdays and 7:30pm weekdays. No Sunday performances.

Monday 8th January 845 for 1930 hrs ‘The Sultan of Oman Air Force’ – Gp Capt Geoff Brindle RAF (Retd) Gp Capt Geoff Brindle is one of the leading speakers in the world of aviation. In this talk he will explain about his role in helping the Sultan of Oman Air Force, with details of life there at that time, and how this air force grew and grew. Having led the armed forces in the Falklands in the period immediately following the Falklands War, in temperatures of -5 to -20 degrees C, in the late 1980s he was posted by the RAF to Oman, with temperatures there of 30 to 40 degrees C. At that time, the RAF were supporting the Sultan of Oman Air Force to become a powerful regional air force.

His very comprehensive illustrated talk will look at the extraordinary progression from the first powered flight by the Wright brothers in 1903 to the age of the space shuttle flying from Cape Canaveral.

Monday 27th February 1845 for 1930 hrs ‘Rhapsody in Blue - A Cold war Fighter Pilot’s Tale’ including the 1969 Transatlantic Air Race Presented by Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Graham Williams.

Air Vice Marshal Graham Williams will be describing the experience of serving in the RAF during the Cold War Period.

Graham started flying in a Tiger Moth before joining the RAF. After graduating from RAF Cranwell he flew the Hawker Hunter with 54 and 145 squadrons, based at RAF Chivenor in Devon. He also had a further

tour in Aden before becoming a member of the Empire Test Pilots’ School at RAF Boscombe Down prior to becming Commanding Officer of a Harrier and Jaguar Squadron in Germany. He subsequently returned to the test world, as the CO Experimental Flying, at Farnborough and finally as Commandant of Boscombe Down.

It was whilst at the Empire Test Pilots’ School that Graham was involved in the unique Transatlantic Air Race, flying in a Harrier from the centre of London, to the centre of New York. Although the story of this Air Race is a very well known to many, Graham will be adding his own inside knowledge, to the stories that have previously been written by pundits.

Singing Makes You Happy For the competition, combining with Wessex Harmony, and some from Tudor Roses , meant that we all gained so much more from the European Barbershop Convention. Held at the Bournemouth International Centre, at the end of October, we were pleased to come 16th out of 28 British choruses. In total, 46 choruses entered.

Singing Love Me, as performed by OC Times, and Once Upon A Time, as sung by Keepsake, we thoroughly enjoyed our six minutes on stage, even if we were the last to perform.Apart from watching other choruses,( all that talent ) our week-end came with fringe benefits, i/e, shopping. But oh, those hills ! We had all our exercise in two days, much cheaper than the Gym! I found this picture awhile ago and thought that I would like to share it.

Hampshire Conservation Volunteers On 13th and 14th January Hampshire Conservation Volunteers will be working at Sandy Point Nature Reserve at Seafarers Walk on Hayling Island.

The site lies in the south-eastern corner of the island near the entrance to Chichester Harbour, and covers 17 hectares of grassland and scrub. It has a rich mosaic of grassland

types, including the salty remnants of a creek, acidic sandy heathland, and chalky soil resulting from shell debris mixing with sand. Near the beach are vegetated sand dunes, though these are easily destroyed by storms.With no public access, fragile lichens are able to survive on the ground. More robust plants include Sea Holly and Sharp Rush, which has dangerously sharp

points.The reserve is managed by Hampshire County Council with the help of cattle for grazing, and volunteers for controlling scrub.

Dementia Friendly Hayling Island is a group of volunteers working to make Hayling Island more supportive, understanding and inclusive for people

living with dementia.

Everyone is invited to attend lively, informative and interactive sessions, telling them more about dementia, and inviting them to become Dementia Friends.

Attendees are invited to think about actions they could take to make life better for people with dementia. Sessions are free and the next one will be held at Hayling Community Centre on Tuesday 23rd

January at 7.00pm.

Local businesses, community groups and organisations of all sorts are also being offered free information sessions and invited to sign up to work towards making their business more dementia friendly, through simple changes.

We have so far, created more than 450 Dementia Friends and spoken to shops, pubs, clubs, community groups, church groups and caring organisations. We were at the Older Person’s Information Fair in October, where we spoke to many of you and held two well-attended Dementia Friends sessions. Please spread the word and encourage your friends to sign up too.

We need more volunteers to help with this exciting initiative, and we would like to invite more organisations on the island to get involved.

Arts organization WemsFest is delighted to announce a concert and event promotion partnership with Postcode Publications starting in February 2018.

WemsFest Artistic Director Mark Ringwood said: “The involvement of Postcode Publications gives us a wonderful opportunity to not just promote concerts throughout the area served by Postcode Publications but to work on new projects and ideas safe in the knowledge that through their publications and financial support we can achieve more and make a lot more people aware of the work we do.

The initial emphasis will be on staging concerts in Emsworth hopefully expanding as a wider area arts festival.

Photography Club in Full Swing Hayling Island Camera Club has attracted a large number of new members this season, many of whom are new to a photography club. Eager to encourage such people to take part in the club’s annual internal competitions, a special skills evening was arranged to ensure they were aware of the competition process and had the necessary skills to prepare their entries, such as re-sizing images for Projected Digital Image Competitions and mount-cutting for Print Competitions. As a result, the number of entries in the Beginners Section has been more or less equal to those in the Intermediate or Advanced Sections this season, a very different situation to that experienced in the last few years.

Welcoming this state of affairs, Keith Tester, the new Club President, said he felt this augured well for the future of the club.

There have been two rounds of each of the Club Internal Competitions so far this season – the P.D.I. (projected digital Image) and the Print Competitions. Each competition has three sections – Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced, each member being assigned to the section appropriate to their experience. An overall winner for each section is selected by the visiting judge and then, at the end of the evening, an overall winner of the evening. At the end of the season, the member with the highest total score becomes the winner of their specific section and can win promotion up to the next section. However, it is not compulsory to compete! Some people just like to see the entries of other members and to learn from the critique of the qualified judges.

Skills development at all levels within the club is one of the new President’s objectives for the year, together with encouraging more members to enter external competitions. To this end, the Management Committee and the more experienced club members have arranged an optional programme of skills evenings on one Wednesday evening each month covering such things as Adobe Lightroom, Light Painting, Portrait Lighting, etc.

Section) with “The Sanderlings”. It was clearly Keith’s evening for both his entries got a top ten mark as well as winning the Print of the Evening.

Several very entertaining and informative evenings presented by visiting photographers have been enjoyed by members together with an internal team competition – a friendly but competitive evening where the visiting judge has to be prepared to cope with the banter and laughter from the teams to one another on the other’s entries.

There will be a very special evening on Monday, 15th January, when Gavin Hoey will be making a welcome return to the club.

Gavin is a very talented presenter who demonstrates clearly what he is doing and how he is doing it and then carries out live post-processing of his photographs. His session is entitled “Lighten up” and Gavin will be showing some great ways to light your photos, from objects to portraits. As always, non-members are welcome to attend the evening by payment of £5 at the door. However, the event has been
