Scaffolding is now erected around the collapsing wheel, bearing on its steel axle exposed through rotting wood.

PMC will lift the wheel with a telescopic fork-lift handler accessing it from across a temporary scaffolding bridge to be built by NJS Scaffolding over the Homewell stream off the Langstone Gate car park.

A “Rubbish” Day at the Beach!

An enthusiastic group of 19 volunteers from Lockheed Martin UK Integrated Systems took part in a beach clean-up along the shoreline at Langstone Harbour.

The morning was facilitated by Community First and Friends of Langstone Harbour. The volunteers walked along the Hayling Billy Trail from Hayling bridge to the south of Stoke Common and managed to fill several large bags with rubbish collected from the shoreline and hedgerows.

Emlyn Taylor, Managing Director for the Systems Solutions said “I am immensely proud that we are a regular part of the movement to help conserve this beautiful stretch of coastline which is right on our doorstep. It was great to get out into the fresh air, spend some time with colleagues in an informal environment and do something worthwhile for both the wildlife and the people who enjoy the surroundings. This is

my second volunteering day on the shoreline, and I will certainly be there for the next!”

John Worley from Friends of Langstone Harbour was very impressed with the hard work and enthusiasm from the Lockheed team. He said “It’s been a lovely morning; I've never seen the harbour looking so tidy after the beach clean. This is a job that is only done by volunteers and we are so grateful for all their hard work today.”

The weather was kind and along with the fantastic views of Langstone - an enjoyable morning was had by all.

Skydiving for Danielle The sky turned a vibrant shade of green as 32 supporters, wearing their Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association charity vests, jumped from a spine-tingling 15,000ft, and all to raise funds for their local Down syndrome charity. Taking part in the skydive held in Salisbury, were brave father and daughter David and Harriett Bull from Bedhampton. Harriett (22) said, ‘I was nervous about jumping, especially when I learnt that I’d be falling at 125 mph, but I really wanted to do something to say thank you to Portsmouth DSA for all the invaluable support they have given to my sister Danielle (9) for the past eight years.’

Danielle’s dad, David, was also very grateful to the charity which provides advice, and a wide range of specialist services and social opportunities for children with Down Syndrome in the local area. He said, ‘The skydive was an amazing experience, and it’s great to be able to give something back to such a fantastic organisation.’ The pair were well supported by their friends and family, and between them managed to raise over £1,900 in sponsorship which will be used to help fund the charity’s speech and language programme. Charity Shop Birthday Our Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice charity shop in West Street, Havant, celebrates its 5th birthday in June.

Our CEO of Chestnut Tree House, Hugh Lowson, attended a party at the shop together with staff, volunteers, customers and donors.

Shop Manager, Jacquie Neale, and the team encouraged everyone to write a birthday message on their Chestnut Tree House paper chain to send to the children, young people and families who use the hospice. Made up of colourful sunshine yellow links, the paper chain was on display at the shop during the birthday

celebrations and then presented to Chestnut Tree House. It is on view in Reception for children, families, staff and volunteers to read and enjoy the lovely messages of support from the local community.

Our Havant shop is our only Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice shop in South East Hampshire. Last year Chestnut Tree House cared for 39 children in the local area, both at the hospice and through a dedicated team of Community Nurses delivering care in families’ own homes.

Mengham Mad Hatter Tea Party The staff and pupils of Mengham Junior held their annual tea party on a sunny June afternoon. This year’s theme was Mad Hatter.

We took inspiration from Alice In Wonderland and dressed up as characters with Head Teacher Wendy Bolton being the Queen Of Hearts of course!

Parents were very supportive as always and joined us for tea, cake, entertainment, fun and games. Our parent association FOMS were out in force providing the raffle and various other fundraisers. We were honoured once again to have guests from Gorseway Retirement Lodge who we always love to see. The Mayor Of Havant, Cllr.

Elaine Shimbart, was able to join us as well and was our VIP judge of the hat competition.

This year, as well as buying some

fabulous staging accessories for the school, a percentage of the fundraising will go to the Brain Tumour Charity.

Report on my work locally and in Westminster Following the election, I’m delighted to be back writing my regular MP column, and I hope that residents have had the chance to enjoy the summer break.

I’ve got a busy few months coming up, with two of my big community events returning for the second consecutive year, which I’m encouraging residents to get behind.

Firstly, my Older Persons Information Fair will be back at the Hayling Island Community Centre on Friday 13 October.

Last year we had more than 1,000 people come to the event, which attracted a wide range of different exhibitors including businesses, government agencies, community groups and charities that work with or serve older people.

The event is open to everyone, including the friends, family, neighbours and carers of older people. Admission and parking are free.

Secondly, nominations are still open for my Small Business Awards. Whether it is your favourite cafe, pub or restaurant, tradesman who has gone the extra mile, or a local business leader or apprentice who has inspired you, please visit alanmak.org.uk/nominate for more information.

In Parliament, following the general election and reshuffle, I’ve been appointed to a new position, as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Ministry of Justice led by the new Secretary of State for Justice David Lidington. Working for the constituency will remain my priority in Westminster, but I now have some additional duties acting as a link between backbench MPs and the Government as legislation is formulated.

I’ll be involved in the process of introducing new laws that transfer sovereignty back from Brussels after we leave the European Union. Aside from Brexit, the Ministry of Justice is also leading reforms in other areas announced in the Queen’s Speech, including a new law on domestic violence, changes to the courts to make them more accessible and a crackdown on fraudulent whiplash claims which drive up everyone’s car insurance premiums.

Hayling Island U3A is now embarking on a major project to record Life on Hayling Island from the end of WWI to the end of the second World War. The families who lived on the Island during these years experienced the hardship of the depression, the demise of the large house, the development of the holiday trade and growth of the seaside bungalow; the sadness of WW2 and the loss of loved ones. During this period Hayling experienced the change from a small rural farming community to a summer holiday Island for day trippers and the growth of camping by the seaside.

To be able to record life on Hayling during this time, as far as we possibly can, we ask that anyone who's family lived or work on the Island to make contact with us

CRAFT BEERS - Enjoy your Local Ales Irish Beers There was a time when Irish beer meant only one type of beer and that beer was Guinness, the famous Irish stout. Guinness is still very popular in Ireland and stout accounts for around a third of all Irish beer sales. In Ireland you can also try stout made

by Murphy’s and Beamish. Both these brewers are now owned by Dutch brewers Heineken. Murphy’s stout is widely available in Ireland and the UK but Beamish stout is now only sold in Ireland.

The rather bland international lagers have 60% of the Irish market with ales only recently becoming popular. This was due to the fact that Ireland did not have a Real (Cask Conditioned) Ale culture. Over the last 10 years the craft beer revolution, which started in the USA, has arrived in Ireland which now has over 70 small independent breweries.

If you are an Irish brewer you can look west to the USA and try to emulate some of their stronger, heavily hopped styles. Or you could look east to England and try and brew English cask beer styles. Alternatively you could look at improving on traditional Irish stouts and Red Ales. I have recently been sent some samples of Irish beers from two leading Irish craft brewers; Dungarvan Brewing and Eight Degrees Brewing. Their beers show that Irish brewers can hold their own on the worlds brewing stage. I was very impressed and would suggest, if you are planning a trip to Ireland, to ask for local beers rather than the ubiquitous Guinness.

Dungarvan Brewing Company were founded in 2009 in the southern coastal town of Dugarvan in County Waterford.

The name Eight Degrees comes from the fact that Ireland’s longitude is eight degrees west. They brew Pilsner, Red Ale, Pale Ale, Stout, IPA and

some specialised beers. Eight Degrees beer are exported to several different countries. http://www.eightdegrees.ie/ Eight Degrees Amber Ella American Amber Ale 5.8% abv.

This copper coloured beer has a tangerine and pine aroma. It is a big beer with a powerful taste which has been influenced by heavily hopped US styles of beer. Burnt toffee and citrus flavours are prominent. This is quite a strong beer which can be enjoyed on its own or perhaps with grilled pork or sausages.

Dungarvan Helvick Gold Irish Blonde Ale 4% abv.

Blonde or Golden Ales are an English style of beer which was developed to offer a choice between bland lagers and traditional bitter ales. It pours a dark golden colour with a lemony aroma. I think this would make a perfect summer ale as it is very

refreshing with a lemon flavour coming through. It is not too citrusy and could be the right beer to go with a curry. The beer is named after Helvick Head which is a spectacular cliff near Dungarvan.

Eight Degrees Sunburn Irish Red Ale 5% abv.

This take on a traditional Irish beer is made from barley and wheat. It pours a copper colour and has a caramel aroma. It is a beautifully balances beer with toffee malt and bitter orange flavours coming through. Irish Red Ales had become obsolete by the 1950s but have recently been rediscovered and are not dissimilar from traditional English Bitters.

Dungarvan Black Rock Irish Stout 4.3% abv.

The test of any Irish brewer is can they make a decent stout? Dungarvan have excelled with this full flavoured beer which has a wonderful vanilla and roasted malt aroma with complex dark chocolate, expresso coffee, aniseed and vanilla flavours.

This is a much smoother, rounded, more flavoursome stout than I have tried, especially those brewed by larger firms. This would go well with shellfish or just on its own, whilst watching the sun set over the Irish hills.

Eight Degrees Howling Gale Irish Pale Ale 5% abv.

This beer is brewed from barley and wheat. It has a pleasing amber colour with a slightly grape-fruity aroma. It is a wellbalanced beer, lacking the astringency of some US style Pale ales. This is another easy drinking beer which would go well with Thai food or other spicy dishes.

Dungarvan Thai Wit Wheat Beer 6.4% abv.

We normally associate wheat (Wit)

beers with Belgium or Germany. A few British craft brewers have had a go at this style but generally craft breweries stick to American or British styles. Dungarvan are to be commended for their ingenuity in crafting this most original beer. The label states that the beer is brewed with: wheat, barley, palm sugar, kaffir lime leaves, coriander, cardamom, lemon grass and galangal, a type of Thai ginger. The beer pours a cloudy amber colour and has a banana and sweet spice aroma. It is much spicier than Belgian wheat beers which are often flavoured with orange peel and coriander.

The taste is complex with floral and spicy flavours coming through. This beer would go really well with a Thai curry.

BEER NEWS Marston’s have taken over the brewing concerns of Bedford brewers, Charles Wells. Wells, in turn bought out London brewers Young’s in 2006. Marston’s now control several former independent brewers including: Ringwood, Wychwood, Jennings, Brakspear’s and Banks. Marston’s are best known for their Pedigree Pale Ale. Pubs are less likely to be knocked down or turned into Convenience stores following a change in planning law.

Property owners must now submit a planning application if they wish to demolish a pub or request a change of use to retail.

Alcohol consumption in the UK has fallen by 20% since 2004. Many more young people do not drink at all.

The Lavant Stream at Havant and Rowlands Castle

I know for a fact that many Portsmouth people would have no idea where Rowlands Castle is and even less, where the hamlet of Finchdean sits on the border of Hampshire and West Sussex. They pass through them on the train to London but mean little to most.

SIGN OF THE TIMES IN BEDHAMPTON Cllr Ken Smith was pleased to use his councillors’ community fund together with match funding from Postcode Publications to buy materials for a new Bedhampton village sign and for HAMESH Men’s Shed to create a new sign to replace the previous sign which had rotted away.

Ken said that residents are very pleased with the new sign which gives a sense of identity to Bedhampton village.

Look closely at the sign when you next pass by and see the local scenes depicted on it include the ‘Spitfire’ bridge over the A3M.

Don’t stop Wining Emerging Wine Regions Every year, a gathering of the best wines from those countries we don't hear so much about or see so much on the supermarket shelves is held in London. In terms of wine producing countries, they are divided into two main groups. 'New World' which as the name suggests represents countries who have not been producing wine for that long. These include countries like Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and the US. 'Old World' is the opposite.

These are countries who we understand have been producing wine for many, many years. These include France, Italy, Spain and Germany, among others, But now we have a third category, 'Emerging Regions'. This category includes countries who are now making an impact on the world of wine, concentrating on quality and value for money. In practice many of these countries have been producing wines for centuries, but have. not necessarily been selling them over here. These include countries like FYR Macedonia who have a whole load of local grape varieties not found anywhere else. Croatia and Slovenia are both countries producing undiscovered but quality wine.

India is a country on the up as is Georgia and England (yes, I believe we fall into this category). Uruguay is also now producing an abundance of quality wines, different in style to other South American countries, the wine are more robust, drier and fuller bodied.

The secret in terms of quality lies in its climate and soils, both of which contribute to the style of wine produced, which are very different from its neighbours in Chile and Argentina. In general Uruguay produces a more European style of wine with less jammy fruit, less alcohol, more acidity and structured tannins.

These new wines are now being taken seriously. Its very easy to dismiss wines without trying them and the main reason for this is that we don't recognise the grape

variety or the country it comes from. As an English wine producer myself the hardest thing I found was to get people to try the wines in the first place, with many people simply believing that England can't produce quality wine. It needs to be experienced.

Food Fiend Experience Lemon Coconut and Polenta Cake

I am pleased to share my latest Lemon coconut and polenta cake creation with you which is ideal for those who are gluten intolerant. It has a deliciously moist sponge texture created by using the desiccated coconut but the polenta gives it an extra bite which is very pleasant to the palate. The lemon juice and zest gives it a freshness and I have no doubt it will be enjoyed by everyone whether gluten intolerant or not.

Ingredients 250g butter 250g caster sugar 2 lemons 50g gluten free flour 200g desiccated coconut 50g polenta 4 large eggs 1 tsp baking powder

Beat the butter and sugar using a mixer until light and fluffy

Method 1. Line cake tin with grease proof paper.

2. Using mixer cream butter and sugar until fluffy and pale.

3. Break one egg at a time into mixture and add a ¼ of the gluten free flour this will stop the mixture from curdling. Mix well and only add additional egg and gluten free flour when the egg has been well beaten in.

Add one egg at a time with small amount of gluten free flour and mix well.

4. Zest two lemons using a grater and squeeze the juice of one lemon.

5. Put the desiccated coconut into a bowl with the 1 tsp of baking powder and mix well. Put half of this into the butter sugar and egg mixture and mix well only adding second half of desiccated coconut when the first has been beaten in well.

6. Add the polenta, lemon zest and juice of one lemon to the mixture and mix well.

Zest two lemons using grater and juice one lemon.

7. Pour mixture into lined cake tin and bake for 40 – 50 minutes on 170 fan oven until golden brown. Test it is cooked through using a tooth pick. The tooth pick should come out cleanly if the cake is cooked through.

Havant has a new specialist cycle store, opened in June, at Solent Business Park.

Evans Cycles created an Event for the occasion with a children’s Bouncy castle outside, in the car park, but this didn't seem to be actively used at the time I visited In essence the store is a large warehouse type concrete shell fitted out as a retail unit and is conveniently situated near Tesco, and just opposite Marks and Spencer.

Inside the store has literally hundreds of bicycles of many different kinds, although I don't remember seeing any tandems so I can't say 'all types'.

Probably the entire left hand side of the store is given over to complete bikes, and the right side to display stands for accessories and parts, panniers, saddle bags etc.

At the rear of the right side is an open plan workshop which they reckon can deal with everything from a puncture to a full rebuild.

On the opening day there was a good crowd of people, but that meant some obstruction at times where visitors were gathered round the display of cycle computers, Garmins etc., probaby the most popular display of all.

Interestingly,although the store has plenty of parking for cars, there are no cycle racks outside so there were bicycles chained insecurely to bollards.Almost diagonally opposite is Halfords which only has cycling on the upper floor, but has bike racks outside.

Inside the store, however, they had a portable, two hoop, Sheffield style rack, and there is a sign on the window that there is a rack inside for the convenience of customers wishing to bring their bike in whilst they are shopping.

I spoke to several customers who were waiting outside holding bikes because there was nowhere secure to leave them whilst their partners were inside 'casing' the joint.

In summary, Evans is well known to cyclists, particularly vintage cyclists as their first shop F.W Evans was opened in 1921, and received an award from CTC for their improvements in bicycle design and construction in 1925.

They claim that this 'has to be one of the most impressive bike shops in the UK', and it is certainly a welcome addition to cycling provision in the Havant area.

I mentioned earlier that I, a humble seaman, had managed to run into two of the most exalted sailors of the 20th century. As well as running, I captained the ship's hockey team.

At different times I represented the Navy in athletics events and on one memorable occasion represented Malta against Cyprus when I won the mile and came second in the three-mile event.

Well, it was the year of the football World Cup and in one of the early rounds Malta was playing Denmark at home. I'd worked out that a 4 x 800 metres race (about 2 miles) would suit the time available.

Needless to say I was included in the Navy team for the race. In the interim the Grenadians had been spurred on to break the record time for the race and were up for another encounter with a Navy team.

In the account of this episode in his official biography, the author, Richard Hill, writes: 'It is clear that he (Lord Lewin) pulled a string or two with the drafting officers, for in January 1963 Petty Officer George Morralee joined Urchin'.

The account goes on: Morralee was an underwater weapons rating and was made captain of the quarterdeck, and a good one too, but Terry Lewin's exceptional interest in him was quickly apparent when he sent for Morralee, who was the Navy's champion steeplechaser and a marathon runner of note, and said, "I need you to break a record for me." Morralee looked at the problem and concluded that he could probably manage a time of under ten hours: the latest record stood at twelve hours thirty-seven minutes.

'On arrival at Grenada, having had the morning watch from 4 to 8am, Morralee was a little put out when told the race was to be that night. Instructor Lieutenant Onyett was second, an hour and three quarters behind, and the Royal Marines Young Officers all finished in good times.

For a Captain (Lewin) who had himself been a noted athlete, it was the high point of a second, and for all he knew, last West Indies excursion.'

Although it was my running ability that got me transferred to HMS Urchin, it was not as though I didn't have a real job to do.

My posting put me in charge of training officers - all midshipmen - including four Royal Marine officers.

There was a third occasion on which my running skills were responsible for a posting at the behest of a senior officer.

HMS Cleopatra was a brand new destroyer.

In 1972 I had completed my 20 years (plus two years as a boy seaman) and that October I left the Navy for the last time.

plenty of opportunities for filling my time to good purpose.

So I got a job with Hampshire County Council teaching adults with learning difficulties, which I found very fulfilling.

I still kept up my running, of course, and belonged to a cross-country league in which I ran for the Fire Brigade's team. One Wednesday afternoon, when I'd been out of the Navy for six years, there was a relay event being held on my old stamping ground, HMS Vernon. Just as I went out of the gate, the Commander called to me: "Morralee, report to me when you get back".

I'd no idea what he wanted and by the time I'd finished the race I'd forgotten all about it. Anyway, I was posted to HMS Vernon where I ran the diving and underwater weapons section, and I stayed there until October 1987.

For all the time I'd been in the Navy I had managed to avoid almost anything in the way of action. My citation reads: 'Throughout his long and excellent service, he has always given his time and

talent to good causes both within and outside of the Royal Navy. is a founder member of the National Association of Young Peoples' Advisory Service and has served energetically as a Royal Navy Benevolent Trust representative for fifteen years.

'He gives a great deal of his own time to the training and further education of the mentally handicapped. He is the secretary of the Royal Navy Cross Country running and has been responsible for raising large sums of money for charity by organising sponsored running events.

'Chief Petty Officer Morralee’s complete dedication and involvement in an extremely wide range of activities over many years have made him a first-class ambassador for the Service.'

I was presented with the BEM by the Flag Officer Portsmouth in Nelson's cabin on board HMS Victory in the New Year's Honours list 1966, While I was still in the Navy I was involved in a number of 'voluntary' roles.

That was my first go at field gunning, a navy tradition in which teams race to move an artillery piece from one point to another.

The field gun in question is a museum piece, mounted on cartwheels and manoeuvred by a team of 18 men. At the time the Royal Navy's HMS Terrible and HMS Powerful were lying offshore. I competed four times in the Portsmouth team and in 1955 was in the winning team.

Most of it has involved people with learning difficulties and I'm pleased to say that I've even gained a diploma in teaching adults in that category from Bournemouth University College.

My list includes running Hambledon Youth Club (the Hambledon where cricket was invented near Cowplain); At one time I was president of Hampshire Athletics and for seven years ran the county championships. As a result, the first chap was running against his own heart in another runner's body!

HAVANT RUGBY CLUB

There is an air of optimism amongst the players, members and supporters of Havant Rugby Football Club that the club is going in the right direction not only on the pitch but also off the pitch.

Last season’s rugby teams from the men’s First XV to the Mini’s & Juniors (M&Js) produced some great performances.

Senior men’s rugby just missed out on the play-offs back to the National leagues and the 2nd Team, the Dolphins remained unbeaten all season, the third team, the AXV/Mariners is, a mixture of young and old, lost just twice in 22 outings. In fact the Club was unbeaten at home after the two

early defeats for the Thirds, making Hooks lane a formidable place to come and play.

The Academy goes from strength to strength with many of the first team exacademy players. They had a tough start with many broken bones and injuries but during the second half of the season started to get things moving with some great wins.

The ladies team are also on the up after a slow start and welcome any new players over the summer who wish to try rugby. We relaunched girls’ rugby in 2015 and now have three teams, U18, U15 and U13 so a chance for all ages to get

involved and play rugby.

With the M&Js part of the club there is no reason why you can not start playing at under 6 age group then walk out onto the Hooks lane pitch and entertain the crowd some twelve to thirteen years later. The M&J section (under 6s through to under 16s) is thriving, both on and off the field. We have an annual family tour which sees 100s of children, parents & grandparents enjoy a weekend away. After a couple of seasons when playing was impacted by the weather, this last season saw the number of M&J players increase. We also welcome back explayers who are keen to stay involved as

coaches from all ages and levels of the game.

The Board have big plans to make Hooks lane the place to come and play rugby not only in Hampshire but the south coast. Summer training has only just begun all the hard work starts now to make the season another success with the aim of National league rugby a reality not a wish.

The club’s ethos of “one club” is really paying off. Sustainable rugby for the community. Whatever your age, gender or ability, there will be a place for you at the club, so come and join us!

Q Why have I got so many gears on my bike?

I have been given a bike, and took it to a shop to be checked over.They told me how to use the gear lever on the right hand side of my handlebars to select the 5 gears but told me to ignore the similar lever on the left side.

A Gears make it easier on your legs to ride a bike, but it is hard to remember which gears to use !

The early bikes (like the Penny Farthing) had no gears and the rider had to be very fit to get up hills at all.

The lever by your right hand chooses a gear ratio ranging from 1 (low) to 5 (High, or top) in your case. Some bikes have 6, 7, 9 or more gears, (the Cassette in the picture) all in gentle steps to help your legs to keep going at the same speed (called a cadence) whatever the gradient, the wind-speed or load you may be carrying.

The bike shop is right, in a way.That's enough information to get to grips with to begin with, and if you are only doing short trips on fairly level ground locally it may be all you need.

If you want to go a bit further afield, however, you will come across much harder hills and find yourself getting off and walking.

This is where the left hand comes in!

The left hand operates a set of gears just by the pedals.Typically there are three 'Chainrings' at the bottom of the bike, shown in the picture.

These three gears are also 1, 2, 3 (low to high) but are in much bigger steps.The middle gear (2) is probably good for local riding, as the shop said, but to get up some of the hills you need to move the lever to 1, or low, and then adjust the other lever to get the most comfortable pace for your legs. As the road gets steeper or less steep you can alter this as you go along.

Going downhill you may find that your legs are spinning round and nothing happens.

The means that you probably need to move the left lever to 3 (high) and again 'fine tune' the Right hand gears.

There is no substitute for practice, and I cannot ride beside you telling you which levers to move, so I suggest that you find a quiet piece of road, or an empty car park. Put the right hand lever in the middle position and just try riding by changing the left hand gears.

Feel the difference and then try out all the right hand gears in each of the left hand selection.

You will gradually get to understand which is best for you and which to choose when the road goes UP !

Note: Not all bikes have levers to change gear. Some have a twist grip, others have different arrangements of levers and releases, but they all use the same principle.

It was five years ago that Portsmouth CTC inaugurated the Easy Rides scheme.

This was aimed at encouraging new cyclists to enjoy the concept of small group cycling in the local countryside, and also to allow older riders to continue when they may have passed their peak.

The first ride was held in 2012, led

by Martine and included a new cyclist to the club, Andy Henderson. He was 'hooked' from the start, and became an avid cyclist, joined the committee, used his professional knowledge to update the club website, and became Club Secretary.

The Easy rides have continued on a monthly basis ever since with Martine or Andy leading, but always supported by other club members so that no newcomer is ever left alone at the back of the group.

The fifth anniversary ride on 22nd July was no exception.We gathered at The Spring, in Havant, just as a light shower of rain had stopped, and Andy led the group of eleven riders off to Compton, with Martine bringing up the rear as 'back marker'.

There were a few riders who had not been on group rides often, and one lady for whom this was a 'first'. At Finchdean there is an opportunity to choose between routes and the more experienced 'easy riders' took the longer route, but four of us chose the more direct way, about ten miles, We got to Compton for a tea break in

several groups which helps the counter service, and the first group just caught the beginning of a light shower of rain, but by the time the main group arrived it was raining heavily. We sat inside and watched them!

Shortly after, Martine arrived with her new rider and we all enjoyed the break in the dry, eating cake etc. Christine said the atmosphere was like a party.

The return journey is mainly gently downhill so we took the opportunity to explain the proper use of gears to our new friend as we rode along, and she was able to feel the difference that each movement of the levers made to the ease of riding. As the road comes south, there is one final little hill where she was able to get the benefit from her new skills.

Just before we got back to Havant, the heavens opened again, but by then it was literally 'home and dry'. Sunday dawned bright and sunny!

Retiring President of Havant Rotary and ex-Mayor Jackie Branson above, recently handed over the Chain of office to Jenny Edgell.

Jenny was the first Lady President 15 years ago.

Jenny said “It’s a privilege to be asked again to lead this vibrant group.When I joined Havant Rotary there were 29 members now we have over 50.We have certainly bucked the trend as all organisations struggle to find members.That’s because we are such friendly volunteers.

It’s, strange how many people know the name ‘Rotary’ and yet they don’t know that we are the largest Volunteer Organisation in the world.

“This year my named Charity is Southern Domestic Abuse Service [SDAS].

Jenny wants to set up a networking session for Businesses in Havant, Emsworth and Hayling Island, “just a simple social occasion where we can encourage would be volunteers to join us to help where we can.”

John Sawtell is retiring from his post as a Governor of St Alban’s Primary School in Havant. He started his work there before 1992 so he has certainly given silver service to the school over a quarter of a century.

At his final assembly with the children he said how much he had enjoyed being part of St Alban’s. He told them: ‘I shall be sorry not to see you all so frequently but I have enjoyed being a Governor here very much indeed and I’ve seen many changes. You have teachers who care very deeply about your education and it has been a pleasure to see so many of you grow up and move on in life.‘ John wished the staff and pupils at St Alban’s all the best for the future. Asked about the role of Governor He said: ‘I encourage others to come forward and volunteer to become Governors. It is

immensely rewarding and I have learned so much over the years. The training is excellent and other Governors are supportive and helpful. You become an integral part of the school and help influence how it develops and moves forward.’

The Head Teacher at St Alban’s, Mrs Nicola Hordell, said that John would be much missed. She added: “John has been dedicated to the work of the school. He has brought his wisdom and understanding to the organisation and has championed education for those children with Special Needs. Our Governors are a supportive team and they will miss John too. I appeal to those who have a little spare time to volunteer as Governors. It is increasingly difficult to find people who are happy to share in helping run a school. It’s a challenge but very fulfilling. I am always willing to speak to anyone who is considering becoming a Governor.”

John said he would miss his contact with the school but he has a mass of happy memories associated with his work as a Governor.

WORK OUT YOUR MONEY @ HAVANT ACADEMY

Havant Academy held their Money Week earlier this term with the help of the Work Out Your Money Team from Citizens Advice Havant. Organised by Nancy Waites, Maths Teacher and Coordinator, this was a planned programme of financial education to help their students gain the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to manage their money.

Pupils at Havant Academy often like to quiz their teachers by asking, “When will we need this in life?” Well, not a single student asked this during Money Week. Money Week allows students in all year groups to take part in various activities and sessions, focusing on using money responsibly.Year 10 learnt about taxation and how to read a pay slip. Some got very jealous when they looked at the wages of Premier League footballers, but less jealous when they saw how much they paid in tax! Years 9 and 8 learnt about borrowing money responsibly. This included how different levels of interest are charged and what things you should never borrow money to pay for and who you should never borrow money from. Finally,Year 7 looked at savings and how they could earn large sums of cash

by holding onto their pocket money or by getting a paper round in the future.

A Year 7 who saves £2 a week in the bank as soon as they start Havant Academy will have over £500 when they leave in Year 11. “That would make a very nice contribution to Year 11 prom… or a lovely gift for your Maths teacher” says Mr Gorman, Curriculum Leader for Maths at Havant Academy. He also offered a big thank you to the Work Out Your Money team, Citizens Advice Havant, for their fantastic workshops and activities. “Money is a very important part of the new GCSE curriculum and is questioned more than ever before.

Also, using and understanding money is a vital life skill for students later in life. The Work Out Your Money team played a very important role in our recent Money Week and allowed students to investigate money matters from a practical point of view.”

Megan Lewis, a Year 7 student says, “I enjoyed the work we did with Citizens Advice, they were really friendly and helped me realise how much I could save. Which I can now put into my new piggy bank that they gave me.”

Citizens Advice Havant and the Work Out Your Money team are based at Leigh Park Community Centre. Last year the service helped over 4,000 people with a diverse range of queries the majority being finance related.

THE CAT & RABBIT RESCUE CENTRE Holborow Lodge, Chalder Lane, Sidlesham, Chichester PO20 7RJ

Hello everyone, hope you are enjoying the summer. It’s been another busy one for us here at the Cat and Rabbit Rescue. I heard the other day from someone worried about a cat and kittens living under a shed in the garden. I needed to muster my staff to see what the situation was. I wouldn’t want the poor mum and kits to be alone.

Having been a stray myself I quickly organized a plan for my staff, I got them to get together the carriers, humane trap and some lovely pilchards in tomato sauce (no not for me but to tempt the kittens!). Off they went, they knew I was on call for any concerns they might have, they said the shed was huge, and they tried crawling under to have a chat with the cat but she was too shy, but saw the three kittens, but they were very scared, and hid right at the back under the floor of the shed there was no way they could be reached.The kind person who lived in the house agreed to keep an eye on them while they set up a trap and put some of the pilchards in. So begins the waiting, hiding behind some shrubbery holding the string on the trap.The trap was loaded with pilchards (I did say if there was any left I am partial to them!). Finally the kittens came out and one went into the trap and started eating, they quickly pulled the string and caught him, he was scared but safe.They managed to get the Mum when she came to see her kittens.The first kitten caught spent the night at the Centre being looked after, then the next day, very early they were back hiding, and waited for some hours with a huge tin of pilchards and then both kittens were in the trap! They were all brought back to the Centre where they are all safe and well and growing strong. I was so proud of my staff.

Don’t forget to come along on Sunday 13th August to our Summer Fayre, between 11-4pm. I will be there, come and meet me. I normally like playing hide and seek that day last year Fuchsia our goat and I managed to

stay hidden for ages but I just might watch what is going on and put a bid in for one of the lovely cat beds. Pets of the Month Brie de Meaux & Brie de Melun

This August we would love you to meet an unusual paring. Brie de Meaux and her friend Brie de Melun. Both 3 years old. Brie de Meaux is a female black rabbit and Brie de Melun is a tri-colour male guinea pig. We do not normally recommend rabbits and guinea pigs living together. However they are a special case and have been living together all their lives and we felt it would be very sad to suddenly split them up after so long together. They get along really well and are best of friends. They arrived in January of this year and have been here ever since. As the pairing is unusual so far no one has offered them a home. They are both very friendly and enjoy being handled. Brie de Melun is always running around his pen shouting for food. We would love to find them someone to love them. If you think you can offer this lovely pair the new home they so desperately deserve, please do not hesitate to contact us here at the Centre.

Stronger, More Flexible, Pain-Free Readers My name is Natalie March from Physio-logical, a chartered physiotherapist in PO9.

I hope you found our tips and exercises for golfers elbow in our last article useful.

Shoulder pain, we treat this allot.There are many different causes of shoulder pain, the most common complaint we see is rotator cuff impingement.

Today we will be offering some advice, exercises and stretches which are good for those suffering with rotator cuff impingement (shoulder pain).

Impingement syndrome is more likely to occur in people who engage in physical activities that require repeated overhead arm movements.

Common symptoms include: • An arc of shoulder pain approximately when your arm is at shoulder height and/or when your arm is overhead.

• Shoulder pain that can run from the top of the shoulder to the elbow.

• Pain when lying on the sore shoulder.

• Muscle weakness or pain when attempting to reach or lift.

• Pain reaching for the seat-belt.

Here is a testimonial from one of our clients who had rotator cuff impingement;

• Hold for thirty seconds repeat twice, three times a day.

Pectoral Stretch You may be more likely to develop rotator cuff problems if the front of your shoulder is tight.

Squat + Shoulder Elevation withTheraband This is an exercise to start to strengthen the rotator cuff this should only be done once you have full shoulder movement and should be undertaken pain free.

• Tie the theraband in a loop • Push out with your hands with a static and constant pressure against the theraband • As you squat down (keeping knees in line with the second toe) you push out against the theraband and take your arms up above your head.

• Repeat three times fifteen, two times a day.

• Remember this exercise should be pain free.

FREE DEMENTIA SESSIONS FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES Havant businesses are being offered free awareness sessions to help them to better support customers who live with Dementia.

Lloyds Bank and Waitrose are among those who have already taken advantage of the sessions, given by local businessman Duncan Cameron, who is a Dementia Champion trained by the Alzheimer's Society.

Duncan, who runs quality home care provider Right at Home Havant, said: “It is great that Lloyds Bank and Waitrose have recognised the value of running a short session to improve their knowledge and awareness of dementia, so that they can better serve their customers and their community.”

Kathy Heidstrom, Community Matters/Charity Co-Ordinator at Waitrose Havant, said: “The evening was brilliant – feedback from the team is that they all got so much out of it, as it was made fun as well as interesting. I think we have all learnt how we can help customers who have this illness, and know what to look out for.”

Park Community School news

Year 11 celebrate their time at Park

A buzz of real excitement filled the school on the Year 11 students last day as they made their way into their Leavers assembly, all eager to watch the ‘Leavers of 2017’ film that Mr Carter-Brazier had pulled together celebrating their five years at Park. Mr Cavanagh, Head of Year 11 thanked students for their superb efforts in recent exams and for the funny and poignant moments that they had provided over the years, many of which were reflected in the film.

Mr Anders, Headteacher praised the students for their maturity, which had developed particularly in the past twelve months when students rose to the challenges that their final year presented them, which included sitting the greatest number of exams Park students had ever sat.

He finished by telling the students to enjoy the longest holiday they’ll ever get and thanked them for very fond memories. Students then took part in the traditional balloon release.

In the evening students went on to enjoy a well-deserved Prom at Boathouse 7 in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard. Beautiful gowns and debonair suits were the order of the evening - a great chance for teachers and students alike to celebrate their achievements!

Park’s new students week of transition and fun

Park welcomed Year 6 students for their Freshers Week and what a fun packed week they had! They met their mentors and new teachers. The first day was full of activities designed to get to know the other students in their mentor group as well as finding their way around the school and learning about life in secondary school.

During the week they all had the chance to complete a dry rowing challenge and the top 45 students went to Langstone Harbour to participate in the Oarsome rowing project. Parents were invited into school to meet staff and have a BBQ. It was also an opportunity to see a film showing what a great, if busy, week the future Park students had enjoyed. We were pleased to see so many smiling and happy faces at the end of the week and we look forward to working with them again in September.

MUNCH is our latest Much More Than Just a School project.

MUNCH provides those students who would normally get Free School Meals during school term time, with a free meal and space to play during the holiday periods. It is open to ALL PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN LEIGH PARK. During the Easter and May half term breaks lots of children and families came and enjoyed eating good food and meeting new people. Everyone is welcome, including Grans and Grandads. To enable us to keep MUNCH running we ask for a small donation towards the meal from those who can afford to do so.

MUNCH, which is based in our spacious Watering Hole restaurant, is open from Wednesday 26th July – Friday 1st September 2017 on weekdays between 12 – 1.30pm. We look forward to welcoming lots of new faces to Park during the summer holidays.

Dynamo Youth Theatre completed a sell out 5 performance run of 'Good Night Mr Tom' by Michelle Magorian at The Pallant Centre. Set at the start of World War 2, the story of a reclusive elderly widower and the damaged and abused evacuee who stays with him is moving and heart warming.

The 42 strong cast, mostly the younger members not taking public exams at this time of the year, received numerous enthusiastic comments from the audience for their interpretation of a difficult story.

Positive Pathway for Havant Volunteers Big Lottery Fund Grant Community First are celebrating after being awarded a £428k Big Lottery Fund grant for their supported volunteering project ‘Positive Pathways’.

Positive Pathways will work with local Havant Borough residents who need a little bit of help to volunteer in their community, to increase participation in volunteering especially for those who are long term unemployed or who want to reconnect with their community but do not have the confidence to do it alone.

Offering team volunteering as well as personalised training and mentoring into individual placements,

Positive Pathways will build on the success of the Havant V Team that supported many local people into volunteering. Positive Pathways will help people to gain valuable work experience, learn new skills, make new friends, support local charities and community groups, and all whilst improving their own health and wellbeing.

Tim Houghton Chief Executive of Community First commented “This grant is fantastic news for local residents, partner organisations and for Community First. It will provide a firm foundation for supported volunteering in Havant for the next 5

years helping some of the most vulnerable to get the support they deserve to enable them to live independent and fulfilling lives. We know there is significant demand for a Positive Pathways programme in Havant; in today’s hectic world it doesn’t take much for people to feel vulnerable and isolated especially after a period of ill health or being out of work for a long time. Volunteering is a great way of helping people to reconnect with their communities. Havant Talking Newspaper seeks volunteers From Jan Turner

Havant Borough Talking Newspaper, a lifeline for blind and partially sighted people in Havant Borough is looking for volunteers to keep its popular magazine going. Sadly the long running and popular magazine has come to a stop due to a shortage of people to help.

The magazine has been produced every three months featuring original material,

quizzes, and articles from printed magazines (with their permission of course). A wide variety of subjects were covered; stories about local characters alive and dead, book reviews, local history and much more. The ‘What’s On’ feature was very popular.

In a recent survey of our listeners, the magazine received good feedback. So it is particularly disappointing that the magazine is not be able to continue without further volunteers come forward.

So what is needed? Enthusiasm first and foremost, and an interest in the world around you.

Co -producer Jan Turner explained how the magazine is put together.

“We meet to discuss what we would like to have on the magazine. Then we would go away and research or write the articles, features and quiz. One of us may write a restaurant review (some one has to do it!).The recording takes a full day, but apart from that it is not a heavy commitment.

Recording days are great fun, where we welcome volunteer readers, and try to create a magazine which we can be proud of.”

CHAPEL MEDI SPA GET DEFIBRILLATOR From Sami Pugh The team 'Chapel Medics' raised just over £800 to get a defibrillator in Chapel Medi Spa in West Street, Havant.

The team are all fully trained first aiders with a three year certificate and this inspired us to run this event and get an essential piece of equipment at the Spa. One of the reasons we achieved our goal was through a kind donation of £200 from local residents John and Linda Elliott.

They came in with young Megan to give us the money.They also gave a signed open cheque in the event we would not have enough money to buy the defibrillator.

They wanted us to add on whatever we needed if we did not make it!

Unbelievable kind support and very trusting. It was fantastic to hand the cheque back to them having not used it.

Lots of clients made cupcakes for us, all emergency decorated.They were all eaten or sold.The raffle prizes were put together by local business and ourselves.

Race-For-Life - July 9th - Girls from Spirit-of-the-South, a local a-cappella chorus, completed the 5K event on Southsea Common. Despite the very hot weather, they finished within the hour at leisurely pace. Henry, who I think is now their mascot, enjoyed the time spent with Mandy Houghton, Joy Hastilow, owner Jackie Stanley and Gillian RoseSmith. Well done girls, and Henry above.

On the 1st Tuesday of every month Spirit-of-the-South have an "Open Evening " from 7-30 until 9pm. We are a ladies acappella chorus of all ages. THE PROBUS CLUB OF HAVANT Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie were among the famous names included in the talk entitled “ A Line in the Sand”, the story of The Alamo and the Rise of Texas, which was enjoyed by the members of the Probus Club of Havant, on Monday, 3rd July, at their monthly meeting.

The talk, by David Skillen, covered the true story of The Alamo, as compared to the Hollywood versions! It went on to the Battle of Jacinto, after which the independent State of Texas was formed.

Probus Club meets once a month, at

Denvilles Club in Havant. Members include retired PROfessional and BUSiness people from many walks of life, who enjoy a drink, a good lunch, by Chef Sam, and talks on a wide range of subjects.

Comic Relief Supports Sailing Therapy Sailing Therapy is a service for people with learning disabilities that is based at Northney Marina on Hayling Island. The not for profit company provides sensory experiences in the sheltered waters of Chichester Harbour aboard their wheelchair accessible launch.

Comic Relief through the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation has provided £1,000 to support local homes

and day centres to use the boat. This will be a day to remember for many of the local people with a learning disability as they go to see the seals and drive the boat for themselves.

Most of the service users come from an area between Chichester, Portsmouth and Bordon. They spend the day aboard ‘Rebecca Anne’ a 23ft pontoon boat that can take five guests (each with a carer) and four of the

guests can be in wheelchairs. The boat was fitted out specifically for people with learning disabilities in mind and the crew have lots of experience specifically with this client group.

Two elderly gentlemen stroll on to an almost bare terrace and proceed to gently discuss various subjects - the past, school-days, climate, the sea, moustaches, the war, families, being English etc. They are joined by two characterful women of a different class and continue their discussions to include chairs, ill-fitting shoes, feet, relationships and the unusual situations they have found themselves in.

In this play laughter and common decency unites them and us in a common bond of humanity. We have all at some point felt lost, fragile and bereft of a sense of purpose and found our way through with the help of friendship and humour.

AirACES What’s on Monday 25th September - 1900 for 1930 hrs - ‘The Role of a Rolls Royce Test Pilot’ – Phill O’Dell

Phill O'Dell is the Chief Test Pilot for RollsRoyce plc. He has flown a wide variety of aircraft varying from the Rolls-Royce MK XIX Spitfire, via the Airbus A380, and the Boeing 787 through to the iconic Vulcan, XH 558.

Before joining Rolls-Royce, Phill was Officer Commanding the Research and Development Flight of the Fast Jet Test Squadron at Boscombe Down in Wiltshire. He joined RollsRoyce plc having completed 18 years in the Royal Air Force. During his time with the RAF he flew the Buccaneer, was both a weapons and flying instructor on the Hawk and flew operational sorties over Northern Iraq and Bosnia with the Jaguar.Whilst serving with the RAF, he attended the French Test Pilot School at Istres in Provence and flew over 25 aircraft from the F-14 Tomcat to the Airbus A320.

Since joining Rolls-Royce, Phill has contributed to a number of major engine development programmes, for the Hawk, the Airbus A380 and the 787 Dreamliner.To help his role for Rolls-Royce, he flew both the Airbus A320 family and the Boeing 777 with British Airways.

Phill also leads the Rolls-Royce Heritage Flight's Spitfire operation and flies and instructs on Spitfire, Harvard and Chipmunk, all at Goodwood.

Monday 9th October - 1900 for 1930 hrs ‘The Royal Naval Historic Flight’ – Lt Cmdr Chris Gotke Former Sea Harrier pilot, Lt Cmdr Chris Gotke, became Commanding Officer of the Royal Naval Historic Flight in 2013. He saw service in Iraq and Kosova and now, as part of his role with RNHF, flies all their aircraft including Swordfish, Sea Fury and Sea Hawk as well as a Sea Vixen owned by RN Aviation Ltd. In this fascinating talk he will explain the history and different aspects of the Historic Flight, training and flying of vintage aircraft as well as its unique and historically significant aircraft.

Monday 23rd October - 1900 for 1930 hrs ‘I (should have) learned about flying from that’ – Air Marshal Sir Dusty Miller KBE, CBE (Or, if it looks easy and there is a flying officer involved, it is likely to be very dangerous) In 1973, when there were a number of RAF display teams as well as the Red Arrows, Flying Officer Dusty Miller, 21 and just one year into his first flying tour, was selected as the wingman or No 2 of the aerobatic display team based at RAF Leeming, the Gemini Pair.

Substituting boundless raw enthusiasm for his lack of experience, Miller ‘hung in there’ (or not) for an exhilarating season of display synchronised aerobatics at 44 locations across the UK and Europe.

He will set the scene by starting with his early career as one of ‘Trenchard’s Brats’, then move quickly through his flying and instructor training, finally dwelling at length on the thrills and (very nearly) spills of the pre-season work up and the 1973 display season.

Murder in the Museum - A Beyond the Stage Event The Spring is unusually fortunate in being both an arts centre and museum, and this special event takes full advantage of the ambience of the museum at night.

A baffling case of murder will be played out around the murky museum in the evening shadows; the story is set in the 1940s, so put on your sleuthing shoes and deerstalker hat to try to solve the mystery – you might even win a bottle of bubbly!

There’ll be special references to our local history too. This unique murder mystery will be performed on Thursday 26 October at 7.30pm and 9.30pm.

Postcode Publications Friends of Havant Cemeteries Alan Mak MP visited New Lane cemetery to meet members of Friends of Havant Cemeteries during their monthly work session.

The group showed him around the different parts of the cemetery, explaining both their role in conserving it as a natural resource and making it attractive to visitors, as well as their interest in learning more about the history of Havant, that can be discovered from researching the names of those that are buried there.

The group has recently been awarded a Heritage Lottery grant, so also took the opportunity to relate to Alan what the grant will enable them to achieve. These include

providing additional display boards, together with new gates and a bench for The Dissenters Cemetery, as well as holding open days in conjunction with The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre.

Cystic Fibrosis charity's huge thank you Cystic Fibrosis is a rare, orphan condition, affecting only one child in about 1 in 2,500, and as such isn't well known or understood. But this year, our little local branch has had amazing support.

We'd like to say an enormous thank you to all who took part in so many different ways.

In particular, thank you to all who wore, or thought yellow at the end of our awareness raising CF Week at the end of June. Angel Radio started the Friday well, by devoting an hour of Breakfast Bustle to interviews and music.The Spinnaker Tower was lit yellow for the night for the third year running, and was joined by Portsmouth Cathedral. On Hayling, Clare Gosling ran an energetic Zumba Gold class, Edwin the yellow engine came out of his shed and chugged up and down Hayling seafront, and the sailing club at Sandy Point held a fun night, organised by Sue Bannister and her team of friends.

In the Waterlooville area, parents organised another fun evening event, having gathered lovely raffle prizes from many businesses, and a school joined in the fun by having a yellow day. In the Tichfield & Hill Head areas, two different dance groups joined in.Young local mothers appeared on TV. We've started putting our thank yous on www.facebook.com/CFPortsmouth there are a lot. Wear Yellow Day has certainly grown, since 7 of us wore yellow last year.

The reason may be that thanks to a Pfizer Havant Community Grant, we were able to produce 17 local banners, showing a yellow Spinnaker tower, or Mikey, a little local boy. Our thanks to Pfizer, to Mikey, and his parents. Wear Yellow Day was about awareness, first and foremost, but several thousand pounds were donated from these and later various events. Folks in Harmony Win Award Unaccompanied Havant Choir, Folks in Harmony, sang to a packed house and showed just why they won the Choir of the Day award at the Portsmouth Music Festival.

Their carefully blended harmonies coupled with expressive and animated singing were a treat to listen to and it was clear that they loved what they were doing. The concert, at The Church of the Resurrection in Drayton was a sell-out and over 100 people were able to enjoy it, as it raised £759 for local charities.

The first half consisted of Songs from the Shows and included numbers from Oliver, Les Miserables and Martin Guerre to name but a few. This mixed choir showed they can do loud and raucous as they enthusiastically belted out ‘Consider Yourself’ from Oliver! complete with cockney accents. A swift change of mood followed with the sweetly sung ‘Where is Love’ medley from the same musical. The evocative ‘Bethlehem’ from Martin Guerre as well as the deeply emotional ‘Bring him Home’ from Les Mis brought tears to the eyes, while the menacing ‘Do you Hear the People Sing?’ made you fear for your life.

This choir can do solos too. Alto and coMusic Director Mary Anne Beames sang ‘On my Own’ with a beautiful tone and Colin Browne performed ‘Summertime’ from Porgy and Bess in a deeply resonant bass voice.

Soprano Jan Treacher-Evans was the third soloist and displayed her wide singing range

with the haunting ‘Memory’ from Cats. Ollie Butler also performed a most amusing selfpenned monologue called ‘At your Convenience’ which is about – well I’m sure you can guess!

The second half was more of a mixed bag and kicked off with ‘Cabaret’ from the show of that name and set the tone for the rest of the performance. A traditional folk song arranged by Ralph Vaughan Williams was beautifully sung by soloist Connor Judd, backed up by the choir. Classic pop songs such as ‘Right Here Waiting,’ ‘When I’m 64’ and ‘Everything I Do’ showed off the choir’s versatility as they brought love, disappointment and fun to their performance.

Tenor and co-Music Director Connor Judd played 2 classical pieces on the piano – Life by Einaudi and Clair de Lune by Debussy, widening this choir’s repertoire still further.

The country duet, Jackson, well sung by Lin Longhurst and Colin Browne, showcased yet another genre of music.

What can I say? There’s a Hole in my Bucket sung by Ollie Butler and Mike Wright, as well as the hilarious sketch ‘Senior Moments’ rewritten by Ollie, showed that this choir can act as well as sing! The Ladies’ Group sang the pop classic ‘Lean on Me’ as if they really meant it too.

The choir ended with the opening theme music from The Vicar of Dibley, ‘The Lord is my Shepherd,’ and an ‘Island in the Sun’ medley. Special mention must be made of

talented all-rounder Peter Mumford, who sings tenor, is a co-Music Director, accompanied one of the soloists on the piano, and arranged all the Oliver! pieces into SATB. Event Co-ordinator Jackie Mumford said, “What a performance the show was. It was enjoyed by both the audience and the choir and made a fantastic profit for our 3 charities. What a wealth of talent we have within the choir from singing and playing solos to writing comedic scripts. Well done everyone!”

Local charities, The MS Society Of Chichester & Bognor, Zellweger UK, and Rachel Madocks School will all be given £253 each from the profits of the show.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes So, after Rise of the Planet of the Apes, we have Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. I enjoyed Rise, but apart from the motion capture and the action, Dawn is really a step down in my opinion. I wanted to like it more. It’s just dull and gloomy, and not in a good way. The acting is ok, but it just all seems average. If it weren’t for the visual effects, this movie would be a straight to DVD B movie sequel. It’s ok if you enjoy these movies, but don’t get too hyped.

The Age of Shadows This film is based on a true story from 1923 where HwangOk blew up police headquarters.

I wasn’t aware of this story, but I enjoyed this film. It is a bit long, over two hours, but it kept me interested. The story moved along well, and there were scenes of bombastic (pardon the pun) action. The acting was good, and overall, I would recommend this film.

Wild Child This is a teen comedy, which I didn’t think I’d like, but came to do just that. Sure, it’s corny and pretty predictable, but it was entertaining. The acting is good, and I didn’t feel bored at all. Normally I don’t like romance, but in this, it didn’t bother me. The romance in this is a bit over sentimental, but there’s not a lot of it, and the film as a whole doesn’t dedicate its whole runtime to it. All in all, if you just want a fun, light-hearted watch, then you could do worse than this.

Sweet Dreams This Italian film is about a boy, whose mother one day dies mysteriously. We then follow him into his teenage years and adulthood, where his mother’s memory still follows him.

This is a sweet and sentimental film, which brings a tear to your eye. It doesn’t feel forced at all. It’s just

a leisurely told story which grows on you.

It’s also very well directed, the actors are amazing, and, in my opinion, some of them should be up for awards. An award should also go to the director and cinematographer.

The only negative thing about this film is that the running time is a bit over long, just a bit. But then again, it is a leisurely film.

I really enjoyed this film. It is a really heartfelt film, written with the same compassion that infuses Massimo’s (the protagonist) journalistic work.

I would highly recommend this film.

Sweet Dreams is out on DVD. Chromeskull: Laid to Rest 2 I watched this movie, the sequel to the Lena Headey starring slasher horror, and was pleasantly surprised.

It’s a graphically gory as the first Laid to Rest, but it did feel like the makers just wanted an excuse to show gore, and rake in the late night audience. Which isn’t bad, because it does what this movie intends to do; it sets out to gather that audience. After all, what do you want going into this movie?

Well, you get it in heaps. The effects are really well done, I have to say. Well done to the visual effects team on this movie. So, if you want near straight up gore, then this film is for you. I can’t say that it’s Oscar material, but why does it have to be. Ok, the acting’s not great, but when a film steps out and wants to show mainly one thing: in this case gore, and it does that well, I can’t fault it for that, because it’s done what it wants to do. It’s like if romantic films didn’t have any romance or the romance wasn’t done well. If the horror hadn’t been there in this horror film, it wouldn’t work. I would recommend this if you enjoyed the first one, or if you want to see a good horror film.

Toni Erdmann This is a father-daughter relationship film.

I have to say, at first I felt detached from the characters and was lost with all the business side of it, but gradually (read: very slowly) I came to like the characters more and became more attached to them. It’s fair to say that this film is a slow-burner, and it does go on for two and a half hours, so it is big.

It’s a well-made and nicely acted film and it did keep my interest, although I didn’t really follow the business plot as well as the father-daughter relationship.

It’s a good film, I would recommend it. It has its surreal moments of bizarre comedy, but above all it’s a sentimental film. I didn’t

feel that they forced the sentiment down the viewer’s throat, but it was organic with the story, which I liked.

All in all it’s a good film.

However, a nightclub owner is running a business, using zombies as dancers and entertainment.

It’s safe to say, that it gets a little bit out of hand, literally.

I am a fan of zombie movies, and I have to say, going into this I didn’t have any expectations. I was neutral. I knew from

that title that there would be gore and people dancing. I got that. However, I was a bit unaware at how the infection started. But that’s a minor thing because what zombie fans want is gore. This had a lot more gore than I thought it would. The effects were mostly done well, except for some wobbly arm sawing and a face of a particular zombie.

If you are a person who goes clubbing you’ll like this film. It has that clubbing vibe, and I liked the vibrant colours which went with that feeling of partying in a club. I did laugh - it’s not laugh out loud funny, but it’s still funny. I also liked the chemistry of the actors, they worked well together.

I have to say, by the end I wanted to spend more time with these characters.

All in all, I really enjoyed this film. It’s got everything a film with that title would make you expect to have. It’s a fun film, which I would recommend.

Postcode Publications Sustainability and energy-efficiency high on the list for Barratt and its homes for the future Five star house-builder Barratt Homes in Portsmouth is demonstrating its commitment to becoming the nation’s leading sustainable house-builder, by highlighting its drive for an increase in low carbon, Tim Hill Managing Director energy efficient, homes.

“With 29 percent of all energy use taking place in the home, the focus among construction professionals should be very much on creating sustainable homes that are kind to the environment,” said Barratt’s managing director Tim Hill.

“It is far more difficult to make an older home more energy-efficient - fuel bills can be up to 55 percent higher for Victorian houses than those on our new

developments - so we feel it is our responsibility to embed this idea in the very fabric of the new properties we design.

“Our focus is on helping to reduce the carbon footprint of all our customers. We do this with a combination of innovative and enhanced design - including additions like increased floor insulation and waste water heat recovery systems which capture and re-use heat, and of course energy-efficient boilers.

“We are learning from previous projects, like the award-winning Hanham Hall. This was our first development designed in response to the Government’s Carbon Challenge initiative, and we gleaned a great deal about ‘fabric first’ techniques.

“Work to do to further improve the sustainability of our projects will continue to

be part of our remit, but Barratt is leading the way in terms of energy-efficiency and we intend to maintain this momentum over the coming months and years.”

Barratt uses a number of methods to increase the energy-efficiency of its newbuild homes, including: •External cavity walls - these contain a space for wall insulation. The latest insulation is six times more efficient than 1960s materials.

•Double glazing - filled with argon gas, it lets the sun in but reduces heat loss. It is twice as efficient as mid-1990s double glazing.

•External doors - tightly fitted and sealed to prevent draughts.

•Condensing boilers - these capture heat and energy which would be wasted by

older boilers in exhaust gases.

•Kitchen appliances - these are A* or A rated. The most energy-efficient on the market.

•Demonstrations with customers - making sure those who move in know how to use their heating and electricity efficiently.

“Ultimately, this is all about safeguarding the environment for future generations,” added Tim. “When we build homes, we are also helping to create new communities.

Many residents will live at our developments for years to come, and we aim to ensure the energy they use - and the way it is stored has minimum impact on their individual carbon footprints.”

Volunteers Dig Deep For Local Organisation A fantastic not for profit organisation based at Staunton Country Park benefited from a morning’s work from 4 willing volunteers from Pfizer, a large pharmaceutical company based in Havant. Pfizer take part in a rolling program of volunteering events organised by Community First, and are extremely supportive of local charities in and around the Havant area.

On Wednesday 12th July, the volunteers from Pfizer travelled to The Right to Work CIC, an organisation based at Staunton Country Park that provides day service opportunities for people with learning disabilities who can and want to work but require support to do so. Having recently moved premises 3 months ago the new building comes with a large walled garden which The Right to Work are keen to turn into an orchard and seating area for the supported volunteers to use and enjoy.The volunteers spent the morning digging, clearing and cutting back the garden helping to get it ready for the

new work to commence, helped by a large group of the supported volunteers from The Right to Work.

Andrew a volunteer from Pfizer said “It's wonderful to work alongside the people who are benefiting.We are all contributing to one great cause and it's great to make a difference.”

ROWANS HOSPICE RATED OUTSTANDING Following an unannounced inspection, the Care Quality Commission has published their findings in a report which overall rates Rowans Hospice as ‘outstanding’.

The report published on 7 August highlights that “people received outstanding care from exceptional staff who were compassionate, understanding, enabling and who had distinctive skills in supporting people living with a life-limiting illness”, and that “the Hospice was outstandingly responsive to the needs of people’s families and the wider community”.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is a regulatory body that ensures that all practices are safe, effective, caring,

responsive and well-led in NHS and independent hospitals and care homes as well as hospices. During the two-day inspection, data and evidence is gathered from various sources including patient and family feedback.

Ruth White, Chief Executive at Rowans Hospice, said: “This success is down to the hard work and dedication of our highly skilled staff and our volunteers who give so generously of their time.

Everyone here is so proud and passionate of the services provided by Rowans Hospice which is demonstrated in the delivery of care.”
