As detailed in our last edition (see it on line at www.postcodepublications.com) we have donated not ten but eleven new Public Access Defibrillators to the South Central Ambulance Charity (SCAC) for siting at strategic locations chosen by the SCAC throughout the PO7 to PO11 postcode areas that we cover.

Two PADs will be sited in each postcode area, with one further at the community orchard at Redlands Grange in Emsworth.

Don’t forget to download the App above that will show where the nearest PAD is to where you are in case of an emergency.

Rachael Coney Chief Executive Officer of the SCAC said; "The South Central Ambulance Charity is very grateful for this amazing donation from Postcode Publications. It will buy eleven lifesaving defibrillators for local communities . These will be machines that anyone can use to save a life - you really don't need any training at all to operate one safely. Thank you to everyone who has helped us get one step nearer to our goal of making sure no-one is ever more than eight minutes away from a defibrillator."

On behalf of the committee at Hayling Island Community Centre, I would like to say an enormous thank you to every single person who has bought a brick as part of our fund-raising scheme for the extension.

The scheme opened in January 2015, and closed at the end of April 2017, with Postcode Publications donating the remaining £5,000 for the last “Golden Brick”. Our initial aim was to raise £10,000 by selling bricks at £10 each. This turned out to be a huge under estimation, and we are

New Vice President Gets His Hands Dirty!

Community First facilitated a morning’s volunteering at St Clare's Copse, Leigh Park in conjunction with Groundwork South.

A team of thirteen willing volunteers, including Lockheed’s New Vice President, gave up their time to clear an area of the copse to create an education area for local school children to enjoy. Their jobs were varied and included clearing overgrown plants and grasses, moving logs to create seating, and building fedges which are small habitat fences made with brash.

Gavin Hughes, project officer from Groundwork South said “It's great to have Lockheed Martin with us today. They are an extremely valuable talent that can quickly and efficiently develop a site into a good working condition. They are a hard working resilient group. We are very honoured and hugely value their enthusiasm and support for this project.”

Systems (LMUK IS), regularly takes part in volunteering activities organised by Community First. They have volunteered at the copse before and were keen to make a return visit. Gavin went on to say “We are very grateful for all their efforts, they certainly made a huge difference to the copse which can now be used as an education area for local schools to learn about wildlife and their habitat.”

Report on my work locally and in Westminster The tragic events outside Parliament in March remind us how precious our democracy is. I joined the Prime Minister and other MPs to pay tribute to PC Keith Palmer, the police officer killed by the terrorist, and all those affected by the incident.

Our best response to terrorism is to be defiant and carry on with business as usual.

That’s what I’m doing as your local MP. That includes my top priority: boosting our local economy and helping residents with events I have organised helping both businesses and job hunters.

My second Havant Jobs, Apprenticeships and Careers Fair was a big success thanks to the support of local residents. We had more than 2,000 people come on the day, making it one of the area’s largest ever employment events, with more 900 jobs and apprenticeships on offer from over 67 employers.

I also arranged for the Government’s “Exporting is GREAT” road-show to visit Havant. The mobile hub brought together local firms with an interest in trading abroad and expert Government advisers, who answered questions on exporting.

It was a brilliant event and I encourage any business thinking about selling internationally to visit the new Exporting is

GREAT website www.exportingisgreat.gov.uk – where firms can apply for real-time global export opportunities, as well as access expert advice, trade services, training and events.

My next major community event is the Havant Small Business Awards 2017 backed

CRAFT BEERS - Enjoy your Local Ales BEERS OF OLD One cannot help but notice the huge range of beers that are available in local supermarkets and off-licences. We now have 1540 breweries in the UK and many of them bottle their beers for sale at local outlets.

We can also find in our shops many imported beers from Belgium, USA, Germany and as far afield as Australia. Every possible style of beer is marketed from Wheat Beers to Black Beers and from heavily hopped India Pale Ales to Belgian fruit beers. This led me to think about what sort of beers might have been available in the 1950’s if one was to have visited an off-licence. My research has indicated that several of our most popular beers have been around for a long time. Here is my selection of some popular beers of the past which are readily available from local stores.

Newcastle Brown Ale 4.75% abv. (first brewed 1927) This beer has a real cult following in the North East of England. It is now brewed in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire by Dutch brewers Heineken who took over Scottish & Newcastle Brewers in 2009. As one would expect it pours a copper brown colour and has a sweetish, toffee aroma. If you are used to drinking traditional English bitter then this beer comes as a bit of a shock as it is quite sweet and fizzy. It is also a rather thin beer which seems to lack body. This beer is exported to the USA, Australia and many other countries and is still one of Britain’s best-selling bottled beers.

Shepherd Neame Bishops Finger Kentish Strong Ale 5.4% abv. (first brewed 1958) Shepherd Neame are Britain’s oldest brewer and have been continuously brewing in Faversham, Kent since 1698 and possibly even before that date. Bishop’s Finger is a fine example of an English Strong Ale. It pours a chestnut colour and has a roasted, toffee aroma. It has a very rich taste of fruitcake and malt. Also available in cask at selected pubs.

Timothy Taylor Landlord Pale Ale 4.1% abv. (first brewed 1952) This beer, in cask conditioned form, has won CAMRA’s Champion Beer of Britain award no less than four times. This is not surprising as it is a fine example of a traditional Pale Ale. It pours an amber colour and has a citrus, leafy aroma. The taste is perfectly balanced with a rich fruit undertone. Taylors started brewing in 1858 and are still family owned and based in Keighley, West Yorkshire. This beer is available in cask at some pubs.

Marston’s Pedigree Pale Ale 4.5% (first brewed 1952) Marstons have been brewing in Burton on Trent since 1834. Pedigree is brewed in Burton Union fermenters which are a system of continuous wooden barrels.

Pedigree pours a copper colour with a sweet aroma and has a well-balanced, slightly fruity taste. It is another good example of a traditional English Pale Ale. Pedigree is also available in cask at selected pubs.

Worthington White Shield 5.6% abv. (first brewed 1820) This is a bottle conditioned strong beer which can claim to be one of the original India Pale Ales that were first brewed in C19 for export to India. White Shield IPA pours an amber colour and has a caramel aroma. This is a complex but balanced beer with fruits, spice, bread, caramel and raisin tastes coming through. It is made with Pale and Crystal malt and hopped with Fuggles, Challenger and Northdown hops.

Worthington’s were formed in 1761 and in 1926 they merged with another Burton brewer, Bass. In 2002 US brewers Coors purchased the Worthington brand and in 2005 they merged with Canadian brewers Molson to become Molson Coors.

Mackeson Stout 2.8% abv. (first brewed 1907) It is difficult to imagine now that this low alcohol sweet stout was once one of Britain’s biggest selling beers. Older readers may remember that it used to be advertised on TV by actor Bernard Miles who declared

Hayling Island Community First Responders A big thank you to the Co-operative group manager Adam Casey and his staff at the Selsmore Road Co-op who have been supporting the Hayling Community First Responders (CFR) in allowing the CFR trailer to be held in their car park and the generous donations from Co-op customers through the membership charity scheme.

Through the Co-op group charity scheme that supports local communities, customers have given over £450 to the community responders.

The CFR group co-ordinator Peter Halkyard said “The money raised by the Coop customers will be invaluable in supporting the work of the responders in the community and will assist in maintenance of the public access defibrillators of which we have now have seven fully operational throughout the Island.

In the 24 hours over the period we undertook this presentation to Adam, the

that it “looks good, tastes good and, by golly, it does you good”. Nowadays brewers are no longer allowed to make health claims about their beers. Mackeson pours a very dark brownish black and has a slightly burnt aroma.

It is sweet and malty with a chocolatey taste.

Although it is low in alcohol it has a reasonable body and is quite a pleasant drink. Mackeson is now brewed by global giant AB-Inbev who took over Whitbreads in 2001. Whitbreads, in turn bought out Mackeson way back in 1929.

The guide features pubs that are still open today rather than focusing on the many pubs that have closed.

Brewing inWest Sussex by David Muggleton Amberley 2017 £14.99 University of Chichester lecturer David Muggleton studies the brewing history of West Sussex in this highly readable and well illustrated book. He explores sites of breweries of the past as well as featuring the 25 or so breweries that are currently operating in West Sussex, most of which have opened in the last 10 years. The book should appeal to local historians as much as it will to real ale enthusiasts.

DIABETES CHARITY SKYDIVE Hayling Island resident Debbie McIlroy normally has her feet firmly on the ground but she has just volunteered for a skydive challenge for the Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation (DRWF), who has its national headquarters on Hayling Island.

Debbie will be leaping from 15,000ft in the charity skydive on 21st May. If you are interested then please get in touch with Claire Levy community fund raiser at DRWF on 02392 636138 or email fundraising@drwf.org.uk.

Debbie said: “It all seemed such a great idea when I heard about it at the Christmas lunch for Hayling Island networking group ‘Ladies who Latte’. Actually it’s really exciting and I’m looking forward to the exhilarating jump.”

This will be the third year DRWF has organised the tandem skydive, with some fund-raisers returning each year, raising over £11,000 from the three previous skydives.

DRWF CEO Sarah Tutton said “We provide information and support to help people to self-manage their condition, including our ever populate annual Diabetes Wellness Day on July 22nd at The Solent Hotel, Whiteley. The Sky’s the limit!”

The Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation (DRWF) is a registered charity, established in 1998 to raise public awareness to type 1 and type 2 diabetes, associated complications, treatment, avoidance and relief and to provide support to people living with diabetes. Whilst funding diabetes research we aim to ensure that people are ‘staying well until a cure is found...’

In the past 15 years the UK has seen the number of people diagnosed with diabetes almost double, and this continues to rise rapidly. More than one in 20 of the population now lives with diabetes and it is estimated that there will be 5 million people affected by 2025.

YOUR MONEY Spring Budget 2017 Highlights

A coffee morning held at Hayling Island’s United Reformed Church on Saturday 25th February raised the sum of £320. Thank you so much to all who came and supported this event.

Hayling Island’s acoustic duo “The Sunbeams” took centre stage and provided life entertainment with popular classic and modern tunes. A very big thank you to Michael and Tom for once again generously offering their time and putting in such an enjoyable performance.

Most grateful acknowledgements to all the sponsors whose kind gifts were essential in staging a tombola and raffle and to our busy helpers on and behind the scene.

The Stubbington Ark is a separately registered branch of the RSPCA and completely self-funded. They are primarily responsible for raising funds locally, which is a difficult task. The entire proceeds of events like this will directly benefit the animals and provide the shelter, food and care they so much deserve.

Mengham Junior Sporting Superstars A team of year 6 children from Mengham Junior School showed their skill and teamwork by putting in a fantastic performance at a sports tournament at Havant Academy.

They competed against ten other local schools in various sporting challenges and were awarded third place which is an amazing achievement. In addition, Mason Willis Bartley was awarded first place overall in the boys’ section and Dylan Bryant came third.

Headteacher Wendy Bolton said “our children really enjoy PE and it is wonderful to see them do so well in a competition. At Mengham, we aim to try our best in all that we do and the children demonstrated superb sportsmanship. We are very proud of them.”

To transition the change this year we will have two full Budget events followed by a ‘Spring Statement’ in 2018.

Here we take a look at the key announcements made in the Budget on 8 March 2017.

Making Tax Digital – HMRC’s plan to replace the annual self-assessment return with quarterly reporting is delayed by one year for businesses with turnover below the VAT threshold (currently £85,000).

Personal Allowance – From 6 April 2017 the tax-free personal allowance will increase to £11,500. The higher rate threshold will rise to £45,000.

Lifetime ISA – This will be available to individuals aged between 18 and 40 from 6 April 2017. The ISA allows for savings of up to £4,000 per annum up to the age of 50. There is an entitlement of a 25% bonus of up to £1,000 from the government each year.

No Increase in National Insurance – the government has cancelled its plans for increasing NI contributions for the self-employed and confirmed there will be no increases in NI in this Parliament.

Dividend Allowance – For company owners who pay themselves in the form of dividends rather than a salary the tax-free dividend allowance, introduced in April 2016, is to be reduced from £5,000 to £2,000 from 6 April 2018.

Business Rates – To relieve the impact of the business rates relief revaluation, no business will pay more than £600 extra in business rates in 2017/18 than it did in 2016/17.

New Book - Just a Simple Life…?

Born and raised in Lincolnshire, Joan is now in her 80’s and has lived and worked in Leigh Park, Bedhampton and Portsmouth since the 1950's. This moving and inspirational memoir follows the incredible journey of Joan Smee through a lifetime of experiences full of high and low points: suicide, love, hardship, abuse, incarceration and so much more! She has had to make heartwrenching and lifechanging decisions along the way – perhaps too many for one lifetime!

It has been anything but a simple life!

Here is a brief extract from the time when Joan lived in a Nissan hut in Leigh Park in the 1950’s.

My parents-in-law were re-housed to a Nissan hut in Martin’s Way, Bedhampton.

There was a naval camp nearby and the Nissan huts were requisitioned after the war and used as temporary housing by Portsmouth City Council. Portsmouth was heavily bombed during the war and extra housing was badly needed.

We visited Ray’s parents there every Sunday. A friend and neighbour of theirs, Betty, was looking for lodgers. I was pregnant with my second child at the time and so we went to live with Betty. She had two boys and was also pregnant. It was always warm and cosy there with windows in each room. I bought two old chairs, a mat, a table and a bed-settee. All the furniture was moved by horse and cart to our new home. The hire of the horse and cart cost me 10 shillings (50p). There were fields and countryside all around us. I was happy living there and my second and third children were born there.

I had a wonderful midwife, Nurse Gunn, who was German. She delivered Keith and Marian. I named Marian after her and she visited the posh houses all around

the Havant and Rowlands Castle areas.

Before the midwife came I got up early and washed the kitchen floor because she was so particular. German women are like that and she was a bit neurotic. At that time I had tea chests as tables, turned upside down. I didn’t have any carpets on the floors and I had two armchairs. I have had lots of problems with my pregnancies and they have affected every aspect of my life.

After my haemorrhage, Keith the doctor told me not to have any more children because it could be fatal for me.

I was still on the council housing list because I always did everything the right way.

Betty had her baby and came out of hospital.

Betty’s mother became ill and she decided she would go and live with her and look after her.

Betty asked me if I would like to buy her furniture.

It was heaven sent! I bought it all; carpets, furniture and her sewing machine. I had her gingham curtains with lovely little tie-backs. I paid £7 for the lot and was very pleased with the outcome.

Betty was happy because she didn’t have to worry about it all and so off she went to live with her mother. At the time the wages I got from Ray were £5.18 shillings (£5.18.0d) a week as a coalman. I didn’t know it then, but Ray used to keep quite a lot of his wages for himself but he never gave me a penny more than the amount he thought was sufficient for keeping house and feeding us all. I told Ray that Betty wanted £7 and I managed to scrape up a bit of money from the in-laws, a pound here and 10 shillings there. I made the house as comfortable and nice-looking as I could. We had logs for the fire, it was warm and snug and we had a bathroom with a separate toilet. It was heaven-sent and was like a palace to us! The rent cost 12 shillings a week and we were very happy there – for a while anyway!

Portsmouth CTC presents its second “Cathedral Challenge” – a series of free bike rides for people new to group riding or who haven't cycled for a while. They start with a short, ‘get to know you’ ride that includes a free bike check, and progress through longer distances, tackling a series of challenges on the way: • Bronze: Havant to Portsmouth cathedral and back • Silver: Chichester cathedral and back • Gold: Winchester cathedral and back The event is not religious - we have chosen the cathedrals as destinations at the centre of each city, and the only 'Challenge' is from yourself.

The series starts from the Spring Centre in Havant at 9.30 on 22nd April – the Saturday after Easter – with a ride that will take less than 90 minutes actually on your bike. We’ll have a break for coffee and cake (or what you fancy) in the middle. All the rides will use quiet roads, cycle lanes

and cycle paths where possible, although we can’t avoid traffic altogether. The series continues, alternating between Saturdays and Sundays, through to the final gold challenge ride at the end of July.

Andy Henderson, club secretary says “Everyone is welcome. Last year the group from all round the local area included a good balance of men and women. The youngest participant was 10 and the oldest 84.”

All the rides are led by Cycling UKregistered ride leaders. We’ll have several leaders available so we can split large numbers into smaller groups (typically six in a group) and to accommodate slower riders.

We don’t leave anyone behind.

We issue certificates for completing each challenge, so you can collect sponsorships if you want to ride for a good cause,but you don’t have to.

There’s no charge for joining a ride – all our leaders are volunteers. However, our nationally-negotiated insurance requires you to join Cycling UK before your fourth ride with us.

Under 16’s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Riders aged 17 or 18 must have a parental consent form signed by a parent or guardian.

We suggest you wear a helmet, but that’s not compulsory. You don’t need to wear special clothing and you can use any bike, provided it is road-worthy.

A SEAMAN ON THE RUN An abridged three part version of PO9 resident George Morralee’s new autobiography Part1: The story begins…

To begin at the beginning for me is to record the stark fact that my young life was blighted by having a martinet for a father. In reality what I did was to join the Royal Navy as a boy seaman aged fifteen-and-a-half.

It was thanks to my ability as a seaman that I rose in the course of my career in the Royal Navy to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. I was unaware of it, of course, but at the time we were seven years away from the Second World War That same year, on the other side of the world the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge was being opened, while closer to home Hitler was well on his way to supreme command of the German people.

Our lot was better than most because, in spite of his failings, my father was never out of work and better paid than the bulk of the population that was more or less unskilled.

The reason I'm a Londoner by birth is because my father, who had been born in Durham and grown up in Sunderland, had moved to the Wembley area. His father had migrated to Cornwall after leaving the Royal Navy. In Cornwall he found work splicing cables used in the local tin mining industry.

My father, who was born in 1901, was George William Morralee (no one was ever sure where this unusual surname came from; His father was also a seaman having worked in the merchant navy as an engineer.

My father's occupation was a master carpenter, and he worked in the Tyne shipyards fitting out the great liners that were built there. As there were still finishing touches to be done, he was told to stay on

board and continue working while the ship sailed to the London docks from where it would make its maiden voyage.

In London he saw how much more work was available than on Tyneside and when he returned home he talked his family - his parents and sister - into moving south with him. At the time he was the family's only breadwinner so I suspect they had little choice other than to agree.

In his youth my father - who came from a protestant family - used to throw stones at his catholic neighbours, such were the realities of life in those days. Because of this and my father's aggressive character, I never saw any of my grandparents until I was eight or nine.

The same applied to uncles and aunts.

The last time we met up he said of our home life: "I don't ever remember feeling happy". It was 1936 and my father was looking for another job away from London. Jordans Village was (is) 19 miles from London and 22 from Oxford on the Al. My father managed to rent a house called Bramble Cottage on the outskirts of the village and that was where I was brought up. Not being a Quaker, my father had nothing to do with the village at all, but my mother did get involved with the women's groups. The one redeeming feature was that Jordans was a really nice place to live and, as I've said, I never went hungry and in fact my mother was a brilliant cook.

If my home life as a child was grim, so was my limited experience of school. Only

one bomb fell anywhere near to where we were living.

The only thing I do remember is watching at night during the Blitz and seeing the centre of London burning in the distance.

My father was not called-up for service in the forces. So perhaps he wasn't all bad.

After the War he found work building the athletes' village for the 1948 London Olympic Games.

One thing about our home life is that I can remember only one family holiday from my childhood. That was to Hayling Island, a long way from Buckinghamshire, but I can't remember any more details.

My father did have an old caravan which he would tow to the site wherever he happened to be working. The people who lived in Jordans Village were comparatively well-off, with fathers who went off to work in the City of London each day. Fortunately I passed tests to join the Royal Navy; so, on November 9 my parents and brother Michael who was five, accompanied me to London to see me on my way.

There must have been sea in my blood I guess, after all one of my grandfathers had been a Chief Petty Officer in the Royal Navy and the other an engineer in the merchant navy. I was looking for the next train back to London by the time we'd reached Hampshire!

A Royal Navy lorry was waiting to take us to HMS St Vincent (a shore station training establishment) in Gosport. Now the Royal Navy can be a tough task-master

at times but it does have a paternal side to it and I'll always remember being in a class one day when the instructor said to us: "Listen here, lads, you've got a good old mum at home, make an allotment", meaning we should arrange to send some of our pay back to our mothers on a regular basis. she said it reminded her of her father who, as a Chief Petty Officer, had fought in the Battle of the River Plate (this was the first major naval engagement of World War 2, when the damaged German battleship Admiral Graf Spee was corralled in the Plate estuary off Montevideo, Uruguay, by Royal Naval ships and eventually scuttled by its captain).

On return from Christmas leave I joined Duncan division Class 48.

Havant Hockey Club - Champions again!

Havant Hockey Club Men, are Champions of the South, after they beat Old Cranleighans, 6-4 at Havant College, to take the South Premier League Division One title, and they did so in some style and with one league game to spare.

Our local Hockey club have been a dominant force in English Hockey for some three decades, wining the National Champions ship in three consecutive seasons in the late 1980s, and also representing Great Britain in Europe. But in 2014 the clubs pride was dented when they were relegated from the National Conference West league, and dumped into The South Premier Division one.

Havant President Chris Pickett, said "it's been a very hard struggle trying to return to top Hockey, as national standards have improved and the league we have been in this season is very competitive" We have come close to promotion finishing in

second spot in three consecutive seasons, so to win this year is a relief and reward for some very hard work."

Havant have a long tradition of producing young talent, and some of their 260 Juniors have gone on to qualify and represent England, several of these youngsters have also contributed to this seasons success, but they have been bolstered by Havant bringing some International talent to Havant Hockey Club.

Adam Seccall, a top Australian penalty Corner specialist played for Havant this season finishing as the leagues second highest goalscorer on 29 for the season...Havant also benefited the services of former Great Britain international player Niall Stott, his experience has been invaluable. Havant also imported Thomas Santiago, Argentina's number two goalkeeper, but there has also been a large sprinkling of local Talent including Skipper Dr Raj Laly, a Havant resident.

Who travelled to Quebec and became a bishop?

Where can you find someone who once lived in Havant and had been a slave trader? Where is some graffiti hidden away? These and other questions are being discovered and answered by the Church Recorders of Portsdown Decorative and Fine Arts Society (PDFAS). Some people mistakenly think that the church recorders are a music group. This is not so!

A comprehensive record of everything in St Faith’s Church Havant is being undertaken by members of PDFAS. Every item in the church and that belonging to it (such as archives which are stored elsewhere), are carefully noted and itemised. When the Record is completed it will be lodged with Historic England and the V & A Museum, as well as a copy being held by St Faith’s Church, the Portsmouth Anglican Diocesan Office and the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Society (NADFAS) in London.

The Record is a full historical record for researchers and will also act as a useful tool in taking stock of what is |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| held in and by the Church. It can be invaluable in the case of any insurance claim.

The Recorders meet regularly in the church. The members are divided into groups to note and research the stained glass windows, the stone and woodwork, all the textiles, the written papers and metalwork and memorials. It may appear to be a huge task but everyone quickly gets absorbed by the detail and the historical background. Looking at an ancient building is never the same again once you discover the hidden stories of the people on the memorials and the meaning of the iconography shown in the windows.

Over forty stained glass windows in St. Faith’s, are annotated plus more than thirty ornate memorials.

Every stone used in the building can tell something about the building’s history. Each meeting sees members opening cupboards, peering under pews, gazing up at the ceiling or squeezing behind the organ and finding objects which have not seen the light of day for a long time. We are all volunteers and love our job! Lethal Waves Hayling Island crime author, Pauline Rowson was on board Condor Ferries at Portsmouth International Port to celebrate the publication of her latest crime novel featuring Detective Inspector Andy Horton, in Lethal Waves, the thirteenth in the series set in areas surrounding Portsmouth.

Condor's conventional ferry, Commodore Clipper that sails from Portsmouth to the Channel Islands, plays a key role in the new crime novel, acting as a scene for one of the book’s unfortunate bereavements, although this one is not thought to be suspicious.

Pauline Rowson says, “The Commodore Clipper ferry is very much an integral part of Portsmouth and the Solent, the setting for my DI Andy Horton crime novels, that it was inevitable I would feature it at some stage. Lethal Waves begins with the body of a woman in her locked cabin on board the Condor Ferry and Condor kindly permitted me to place my fictitious one there.’

Pauline Rowson adds, “All my crime novels are set against the backdrop of the sea and I particularly love that self-contained feel of island settings. I’m very grateful to Condor and the Captain and crew for all their help while researching Lethal Waves.”

Over fifty schools, nurseries and businesses supported Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association’s Awareness Week by holding awareness assemblies to educate pupils and staff about Down syndrome, or organising fundraising events including cake sales, concerts and nature walks. Rachael Ross, Portsmouth DSA’s Chairperson said, ‘Support from the community has been overwhelming, with thousands of individuals taking part in our celebrations across the area. Down Syndrome Awareness Week is a great way for us to spread the message that when individuals with Down syndrome are included and given opportunities to participate, they can make very real and positive contributions to their communities.’

Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association provides support and specialist educational services for children across South Hants, including a free School Advisory Service which supports the successful inclusion of children with DS in 60 mainstream schools. Warren Park Primary School in Havant was one of the many schools who showed their support for the charity by holding an awareness assembly and cake sale, raising £308. Tim Kirk, from Bedhampton, whose son Harrison (8) benefits from Portsmouth DSA’s services, also organised a cake sale at his

place of work, raising £260. Tim said, ‘We really appreciate the invaluable support the charity gives to us, and it was great to be able to give something back in return.’

Rachael said, ‘It’s very humbling to know that we have so many friends out there in the community. Craft charity Making Space has worked with over 25,000 people since it was opened by the Princess Royal 10 years ago. During that time its range of workshops, classes, talks and demonstrations have allowed adults and children from all backgrounds to take part in hand making and enjoy high quality creative craft and design experiences.

Now the organisation is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a year-long programme of events and activities starting in May, showcasing its unique role in the Hampshire community and shining a spotlight on artistic endeavour and achievement.

Making Space is a community-based craft organisation that creates opportunities for people to discover and develop their design and making skills and to increase their personal well-being through their involvement in high quality craft.

“We offer a wide range of craft experiences where people can expand their understanding of what craft is, does and can do,’ said Making Space Director Lynne Dick.

“By engaging hands-on with craft, participants get involved in imagining, designing, problem solving and, through use of tools and learnt techniques, making something unique, which is not only very rewarding but goes beyond their expectations.”

The venue was designed by Winchester

based architect John Alexander to make the best use of light and space. There is a central courtyard at its heart, from which seven studios and two fully equipped community teaching spaces connect, offering an inspirational creative oasis for all.

As well as a wide range of classes, workshops and outreach activities, Making Space also offers studio space, business advice and networking opportunities for early career and established makers and arts practitioners.

Business & networking support Making Space promotes Hampshire as the place designers, makers and artists can thrive and grow their businesses. The support it offers helps to raise the profile of talent in Hampshire, both regionally and nationally. The organisation is networked with over 160 designer-makers in the area, hosts six networking meetings a year and circulates wider opportunities and information about craft.

The charity offers and buys in expert advice for makers including business planning, advice on pricing work and making a pitch for funding. The UK is a world leader in craft and Making Space is part of this infrastructure. Craft generates £3.4 billion for the economy and 150,000 people are employed in businesses driven by craft.

So far, 20 different makers and artists have rented studios at Making Space and as

part of the 10th anniversary former tenants will exhibit new work during Open Studios (May 20 & 21, 11am-4pm) providing an opportunity for visitors to chat to artists and to enjoy a wide range of work including ceramics, textiles, jewellery, glass, photography, gilding, printmaking, painting and drawing. Many current and former tenants get involved in teaching classes and running workshops in Hampshire, creating a bridge between their professional practice and community engaged work.

Apprenticeships Making Space believes in providing opportunities for individuals and emerging makers to develop skills and interests. As part of supporting different learning pathways, the charity has supported two young apprentices who have successfully achieved their NVQ Level 2 Community Arts Administration qualifications. One has just started at Arts University Bournemouth and the other is half way through a creative degree at University of West London.

Volunteers Since 2014, the charity has helped 90 young people gain their Arts Award and since 2010, has provided over 90 different volunteering opportunities for local people to work on projects, assist artists and help at Open Studios.

Hello it’s me again your out and abouter reporter for the Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre Hulky Bear. Yes, my staff are at it again getting crazy ideas in their head about doing sponsored fund raising helping us to reach our target to improve the barn (Which I named THE BUMP.) The staff asked me if I had any good ideas mine were just too scary for them (what you don’t want to jump out of a plane), if any of my readers can think of anything that I can pass on to them can you please email me on clo@crrc.co.uk with your subject ‘message for HULKY BEAR’ that way I can pretend the idea was mine. I did think about firing them into the sky in a rocket, but I do need them at work the next day to give us cats our dinner. I would love an email as I have never had one before. Little Amaya arrived here a couple of weeks ago she was so sad as her owner no longer could look after her and she is elderly so we asked her to help with the book sales, keeps her busy and she loves it when you stop and cuddle her. If you come in to buy some books makes sure you say hello to her. Felt sorry for my friend Solomon this month he had to see the vet for a dental, yuk! He had to stay in for a

Carlos is in charge of security in the car park. That day he moved out of our garden room as the staff gave it a spring clean, all the furniture and the windows were cleaned we had new bedding and lots of new toys so we now have a lovely area again. We are all happily chilling out in waiting for the warmer weather to arrive. Pets of the Month Mazarin & Semla

This April, we would like to introduce out Pet of the Month as two special Easter Bunnies. Mazarin and her sister Semla are a year old. They arrived here at the Centre in October 2016 after suffering from neglect and not being fed correctly. When they arrived they were both very underweight and in poor condition. Since being here they have had lots of love and correct feeding by the staff. They are looking much better and are ready to find their forever home. At the moment due to the lack of handling, we are a little scared and not sure of being picked up but will soon enjoy being handled.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance appeals for volunteers Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) is urgently seeking volunteers to help promote its life saving service across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. The charity currently has a loyal team of volunteers and hopes to begin recruiting new volunteers as soon as possible, in preparation for the busy summer event season.

‘Our volunteers are the backbone of our charity and they provide an essential link to the communities that we serve. We urgently need new volunteers for a variety of roles to help us spread the word about our life saving work’ commented HIOWAA Charity Manager Sherie Williams Ellen.

Volunteers provide invaluable support to HIOWAA throughout the year, fulfilling a number of important and rewarding roles. From giving talks to local groups to distributing donation pots, attending fundraising events, and presenting the charity’s highly successful ‘Be a 999 Hero’ Education Programme, volunteers play a key role in the day to day fundraising activities of the charity.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance flies seven days a week and attends an average of two to three missions a day, many of them life saving. The charity receives no government, statutory or national lottery funding for routine operations, and is entirely dependent on donations received from members of the public, companies and grantmaking bodies to keep the Air Ambulance flying and saving lives.

MOONLIT MEMORIES WALK TENTH ANNIVERSARY Moonlit Memories Walk is the flagship event for Rowans Hospice and is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year. Over the last nine years, almost 10,000 people have taken part raising £1.8 million overall. Online registration opens on 1 March with a special early-bird rate of £10 for the first ten days, after which the usual fee of £20 applies.

This year’s event takes place on 10 June, starting at 10pm with a choice of a 10-mile or 6-mile route along Southsea seafront, through

Vin Selections What Does Wine Cost?

Jonathan Rogers of VIN Wine Merchants in Emsworth l o o k s a t t h e c o s t s i n vo l ve d i n a b o t t l e o f w i n e .

A recent article in the press outlined the fact that the £10 mark was a good safe price point to pay for a bottle of wine due to the ratio between the production costs and the actual cost of the wine itself, is at the ‘good value for money’ point.

When you actually chip away at the various costs involved with wine production its certainly safe to say that on the lower end of the market there is not a lot left for the actual wine value, therefore reducing also the quality of the wine.

So let’s look at where the costs lie on a bottle costing £5.00.

The heaviest cost involved are the taxes.

These are made up of two main areas, duty and VAT. The duty rate on a bottle of wine up to 15% ABV is £2.16. This means that wine from anywhere in the world entering the UK, the government slap this amount on.

Then we have the packaging costs which account for around 40p, logistics amounts to around 20p and then supplier’s margin accounts for approximately £1.08. That comes to £3.84. Then we have to add VAT making the cost price £4.61. This then leaves 39p for the actual value of the wine itself and therefore a far inferior quality product.

If we jump up in price to £9.00 a bottle, then it is a different stor y.

Logistics and packaging remain the same at 60p. Duty is the same at £2.16, supplier’s margin is approximately £2.25 bringing the cost to £5.01. Adding the VAT makes it £6.01 leaving £2.99 for the value of the wine. So by spending an extra

£4 on the bottle, the value and quality of the wine is just over 7 times better than a £5 bottle. The more you spend the higher the actual wine value is, and it rises at a faster rate then what you spend, giving you much better value for money. Now, I always say the wine is a good wine if you enjoy it, no matter what you spend but the above costings are worth thinking about if you really enjoy your wine.

The term ‘false economy’ springs to mind.

Below are a few examples of some great wines at the £9.00 area and great for summer drinking.

Mushroom, Lentil and Quinoa Bourguignon This dish is so delicious even meat eaters will be pleasantly surprised. Packed with healthy, goodness this is a robust dish which can be enjoyed on its own. It can also be used as an accompaniment for grilled fish or salmon with steamed broccoli, asparagus and beans. For a more rustic meal add cooked spicy sausages and serve with crusty warm bread.

For more information go to: www.foodfiendexp.com Ingredients 1 large onion 200 gm shallots 200 gm Puy lentils 50 gm quinoa 800- 900 gm mixture of white chestnut and Portobello mushrooms Vegetable stock cube Handful of thyme sprigs fresh or dried 2 bay leaves 250 ml red wine 4-5 cloves garlic Pepper and salt Olive oil Method 1. Wash puy lentils and quinoa in a sauce pan.

Cover with twice the volume of boiling water and cook for 25 minutes or until cooked on medium heat. Stir occasionally and do not allow to boil dry, add more boiling water if required.

2. Dice carrots and finely chop onions. Remove the outer skins of the shallot onions.

3. Dice mushrooms so they are roughly the same size.

4. Make up vegetable stock with 100 ml water.

5. Finely chop garlic.

6. Heat 2-3 tablespoon of olive oil in a large non stick pot. Add garlic when oil is hot and cook for 1 minute and then add diced mushrooms. Cook on medium heat, when mushrooms cooked through place in a dish.

7. In the same pot heat 2-3 tablespoon olive oil.

When the oil is hot add the finely chopped onion. After a couple of minutes add the carrots and the shallot onions. Cook on medium heat for 5 minutes or longer so the shallot onions start to soften. Add the red wine and vegetable stock. Add the cooked lentils and quinoa along with the mushrooms, the thyme and bay leaves. Cook for 20 – 25 minutes and season with pepper and salt.

Cook the finely chopped onion and carrots, add the wine and stock

A MEMORABLE CONCERT!

Cantemus Choir’s Spring concert on March 25th was an experience not likely to be forgotten by choir or audience for reasons other than the music!

Arriving at the concert venue, the Hayling College, for a rehearsal on the morning of the concert, choir members were greeted by news of an unexpected change. Raising the roof may be an appropriate response to a great performance but in this case a roof had fallen, and without a note being sung! Part of the ceiling of the school hall, booked for the concert, had crashed down, rendering the room unsafe: the concert was therefore moved to the sports hall, not an ideal location for a musical event.That the concert was able to take place at all was in no small part due to the tireless efforts of school caretaker Carl Jackman who ensured a smooth transition to this new venue.

The first part of the programme consisted of folk songs interspersed with the six movements of Peter Warlock’s Capriol Suite, a set of dances written as piano duets.All went well until the pianists,Terence Allbright from Chichester University, and Robert Louden, Cantemus’s regular accompanist, had concluded the second part of Warlock’s Suite, when the lights failed, plunging the hall into pitch blackness! Lighting was quickly restored (Carl again) and the programme

continued, only to be interrupted again in the middle of Musical Director William Waine’s folk song solo!

The second half of the programme featured Johannes Brahm’s Love Song Waltzes, a series of short pieces for voices, probably inspired by his love for the wife of fellow composer Robert Schumann. Once again the lighting system was unreliable, notably during a tenor solo sung by Tom Perkins from Chichester Cathedral choir.

It transpired that the lighting system is geared to movement, which was fine while the conductor was waving his arms about, but the voice solos and piano duets did not provide enough motion stimulus to keep the lights on. Someone was therefore stationed by the override switch to quickly save the situation when necessary.

Another casualty of the evening’s changed circumstances was the use of the school hall’s grand piano.The pianists did a fantastic job with a substitute electronic keyboard but decided that this would not be suitable for their programmed piano solos – a disappointment for all, but completely understandable.

The audience appeared appreciative and choir members were relieved that the concert seemed to go well in spite of fears that the sports hall’s acoustic would be unfavourable, fears that proved groundless.

Altogether, a memorable evening!

I hope you found our last self-help exercises for mid back pain useful.

Now that the better weather is here, many of us are feeling inspired to get out into the garden and start digging! Today we will share with you a few physiotherapy tips to help avoid some common gardening injuries.

Is it important to do a few stretches before and after gardening. No-one would consider running a marathon or going to the gym without doing a warm-up.You are going to do some moderate exercise so it is important to prepare your body.

Gardening Tips • Plan your workload – it is important to have a few tasks on the go at the same time, but work a little on each every time you go into the garden, your body will much prefer the variety of tasks.

• Pace yourself - do not try and dig the whole vegetable patch in one morning, your back and muscles will find it very strenuous.

• Pruning – do this in moderation it puts a lot of strain on your forearm muscles which can lead to tennis elbow, try and use two hands for tough pruning, also stretching out your forearm muscles will help to reduce muscle soreness.

Consider your equipment – use long handled tools if you have problems with your hips, knees or your back • Use a kneeler – this will reduce the pressure through the knees • Don’t overfill the wheelbarrow – it is better to make a few extra journeys with a lighter load • Maintain good posture - squat down and bend at the knees, kneel whilst planting or weeding, don’t just bend at your back.

• Set a timer to tell you when to have a break, or you may lose track of time and just keep going.

Residents are being urged to take care over who they pay to dispose of household waste.

From black bin bags to van-loads of construction material, Havant Borough Council has recorded 961 incidents of fly tipping between January 2016 and January 2017.

Beware individuals or small businesses that offer to take away waste for a seemingly small to good to be true fee.

Businesses that carry waste should be registered with the Environment Agency as licensed waste carriers; this license is paid for and allows them to legally dispose of waste.

By law, individuals have a duty of care to take reasonable measures to ensure that waste produced on their property is passed on to an authorised body who will dispose of the waste responsibly.

The Bridge Advice Centre on Hayling Island is currently running computer courses for anybody from complete novices to more advanced learners. For beginners, we teach the basic principles of how to manage files and folders, word processing, sending and receiving e-mails, adding attachments and surfing the internet. For more adept users we can give more complex instruction such as using spreadsheets, manipulating photographs or creating posters and newsletters.

All lessons are tailored to meet individual learner’s needs and are delivered on a one to one basis, so learners can progress at their own speed.

Jealous tennis player Tony Wendice (Scott Hawley) hatches a plot to kill his lovely wife Sheila (Laura Duncan) after he discovers that she has been having an affair with Max Halliday (Philip Gyngell). He needs an alibi, and bribes an old school friend who goes by several names, but who we know as Captain Lesgate (Adrian Trew) to carry out the act.

The murder does not go according to plan, and Tony is forced to wriggle, lie and improvise his way around the investigating police. Things seem to be going his way until Inspector Hubbard (Dafydd Modig) puts his career on the line to bring Tony to justice, and save the suspect from being hanged unjustly. Arun & Chichester (Air) Enthusiasts Society

Monday 22nd May 1900 for 1930 hrs ‘Bull’ Halahan and the fighter tactics he pioneered - Philip MacDougall will tell the remarkable story of Sqn Ldr P H ‘Bull’ Halahan.

‘Bull’ was the Commanding Officer of No.1 Squadron, flying Hurricanes during the Battle of France (Sept. 1939 to May 1940).

He and the pilots of that squadron found themselves on a steep learning curve, soon

realising that the tactics of air fighting that they had been trained in, were totally inadequate and had to be totally revised.

In developing new tactics, some of them similar to those already devised by the Luftwaffe in Spain, Halahan’s squadron was demonstrating a proficiency unmatched by any other RAF Squadron.

On returning to Britain after the evacuation of Dunkirk, other RAF squadrons

Monday 5th June - 1900 for 1930 hrs ‘From 1st Loop to Red Arrows’ – Chris Roberts Former Red Arrows pilot Chris Roberts talk about how he came to join the team as well as giving a brief history of RAF display flying from the first ever loop in 1913, just a few years after the Wright brothers made their first flight. Initial RAF public displays began with the Hendon Aerial Pageants and

aerobatic teams became a major draw for the public; over the years many teams flying many different types of aircraft paved the way to the formation of the Red Arrows in 1965. The talk includes an insight into the pure flying aspects of formation aerobatics, plus, of course, a few anecdotes along the way.

Monday 26th June - 1900 for 1930 hrs ‘Puma Helicopter Operations in Afganistan, in the aftermath of Operation Herrick’ – Sqn Ldr J M Hamilton - RAF Benson Sqn Ldr James Hamilton will outline the Operations in Afghanistan - which have changed significantly since the end of Operation Herrick. The speed of economic recovery and the advancement of social reform has never been faster, however the threat from insurgency remains. Afghanistan resides at a tipping point between measurable development versus a slow decline to a failed state.

This presentation will look at Afghanistan from a personal view point,

using the experience of one Puma Helicopter Commander who returned from Kabul recently. It will explore the development of the Puma and the recent upgrade to the Puma Mk. 2, and what that actually means to the people on the ground.

May Days Arts Trail... what's that all about you say?

Quite simply the trail consists of art makers opening up their studios and homes for free to the general public. It's a chance to meet some fun and interesting artists, ask questions on how they do what they do and purchase a piece of art direct from the artist.

The trail has been going for over ten years and it's not a new idea. There are trails all over the UK at various times of the year.

Hampshire Open studios takes place in August, Emsworth art trail will start soon (a great trail that is totally walkable) but we want to talk to you about Hayling Island and Waterlooville & Greater Havant May 13 & 14 is Hayling islands kicks us off and involves over 30 exhibitors: many of whom have been part of the trail since the beginning and most are professions in their field.

May 20th & 21 Waterlooville, Havant and surrounding areas have 14 exhibitors who will be showing and selling their work the furthest venue being at Stansted Garden centre where 5 artists will bed in for the weekend.

What can I expect to see on the trail? potters, sculptures, paintings, ceramics, glass wear, jewellery, felt makers, print makers and so much more. Nearly all the exhibitors take commissions, so it could be your chance to have a one-to-one with an artist/maker and have an original piece of work made for you.

Origins and History of the Staunton Estate: 250 years of the Leigh Park Estate Join local historian Steve Jones as he explores the 250 year history of the Leigh

Park Estate (Staunton Country Park) from its humble beginnings in the tithing of Leigh to becoming one of the foremost gardens and parklands under Sir George Staunton in the early to mid 19th century. The talk will show how the estate evolved and changed after Staunton's death, look at the later owners, before seeing what became of the estate during and after the war and what remains of it now.

Success at the Portsmouth Music Festival

In February Warblington School hosted the Portsmouth Music Festival. It was a fantastic day with students from local schools performing as bands and artists in a wide range of Rock and Pop genres.

We had a tremendous day with students receiving top marks for their Performances.

Isabella Clark was awarded Highly Recommended and the Year 10 GCSE class bands were both awarded Distinctions in their performances. Solo singers Evie Needham, Ehssan Benyahya and Sky Duffy, as well as the school rock band 'Wait for It' were all given the highest award marks of Honours.

Special Trophies the students walked away with were:

Luke Perkins - Best Bassist 10B - Best Ensemble Ehssan Benyahya - Best Vocalist Ashleigh Jenkins & Joe Bradwell - Best Duo Evie Needham - Best Original Song Millie Knight - Best Instrumentalist Sky Duffy - The John Gleadall Cup for an Outstanding Performance Ehssan Benyahya - The Brian Baber Cup for Outstanding Vocals The winner of the Garratt Shield and therefore the overall winner of the event was Evie Needham with an original song she composed, 'Tea and Sugar'.

Every student who took part did an outstanding job of representing the school and should all be very proud of their achievements.

Evie Needham and the band 'Wait for It' also represented the school by performing at the final festival event at the Kings Theatre on Sunday 2nd Apri.

Rock Challenge 2017 On Monday 27th February our Rock Challenge team arrived at school for a 7.30am rehearsal before the event had even begun!

Our team of thirty-three students, including stage crew, lighting designer and hair & make-up and four members of staff arrived at the Guildhall Portsmouth by 9.00am ready for the day ahead.

We had a great day meeting other schools and watching their submitted pieces for the Global Rock Challenge Event 2017.

It was then Warblington's turn to have rehearsals on the stage. Our piece was called Harry Heals the Hive and conveyed to the audience how important the sustainability of bees is and how they contribute to plant life, food and our survival. We researched the idea to ensure we had statistics and information to support our theme. We also 'upcycled' our costumes and set to emphasise the idea of sustainability. Our music choices also ensured that our storyline was clear.

At 6.30pm the doors opened and we performed our piece on the Guildhall stage. It was an electric atmosphere with so much support from our families and friends and the students looked amazing on the stage, with the help of our lighting director!

We came away with six awards: The Award for Cultural and Educational Achievement, and Awards of Excellence for Choreography, Entertainment, Performance Skills, Lighting and Staging.

I couldn't have asked any more of the students in terms of their professionalism, attitude, effort and behaviour. They were outstanding ambassadors to the school and it was a pleasure to share that experience with them.

Latest figures from the ONS reveal there are now more than 4.8 million self-employed people in the UK and financial experts from The New Homes Group say that it is fact easier to secure a mortgage than many self-employed people think.

Adam Champion from the New Homes Group, which works with Barratt Homes, says that there is currently plenty of opportunity for those with non standard earnings to buy their own property.

“In recent years, lenders have been more than a little sceptical about taking the plunge by offering mortgages to those with finances that might fluctuate from year to year - or even month to month,’’ said Adam.

“However there are plenty of mortgage lenders offering finance and as long as buyers can prove their earnings they should

have access to the same range of mortgages as any other buyer.”

Adam said that online tax returns have made it easier for self employed people to provide their SA302 forms which provide the required evidence of earnings for the last three years. “Every application is considered individually on its own merits, and many lenders view new-build homes as a safer bet because of extra safeguards on offer,’’ added Adam.

Ghost in the Shell This animated movie from Japan is a great film, not only for its beautiful visuals, but also its heartpounding action scenes (which there could have been more of, in my opinion).

I haven’t watched the TV series, but I would certainly check it out after watching this. It’s not flawless, but it is a nice experience and a great movie. I would highly recommend it. I also liked the futuristic shots of Japan, which evoked this tarnished future where all is not well.

It’s not a very bleak movie, but the ending, for me, was quite bleak, but not sad. I wasn’t expecting it. It sounds like it’s a big twist, but it isn’t.You’ll just have to see. I don’t want to give it away. It’s a good ending, not the best ever, but it’s good. I talked about there being less action than I thought could be in this. It’s not a very action-heavy movie, which surprised me. Sure, it has its share of action scenes, but it doesn’t have a lot of them.

That doesn’t make it a bad movie. No, not at all. It’s a great movie; it just surprised me with how little action scenes were in it.

All in all, I would highly recommend it, although it’s not up to the standard of Ninja Scroll.

Anaconda Having heard a lot about this movie being one of those mindless pieces of entertainment, I can confirm that it is really that. Mindless and entertaining. It definitely is a B movie where actors overact whilst a creature picks them off one by one. I like creature features and horror movies. This one did a solid job of offering a steady rhythm of thrills. Plus, if you like overacting, look at Jon Voight, who acts as if he’s being eaten by the anaconda every time the camera is on him. The other cast members are ok, with a few famous faces, including Owen Wilson. Jennifer Lopez and Ice-T also give good performances, and I liked their characters. I wanted to spend more time with them because I felt like they could have carried this movie on their own. It’s a fun movie and the best in the Anaconda(s) series.

Ibiza Undead A group of friends go on holiday to Ibiza, where they intend to party hard. However, a nightclub owner is running a business, using zombies as dancers and entertainment. It’s safe to say, that it gets a little bit out of hand, literally.

I am a fan of zombie movies, and I have to say, going into this I didn’t have any expectations. I was neutral. I knew from that title that there would be gore and people dancing. I got that. However, I was a bit unaware at how the infection started. But that’s a minor thing because what zombie fans want is gore. This had a lot more gore than I thought it would. The effects were mostly done well, except for some wobbly arm sawing and a face of a particular zombie.

If you are a person who goes clubbing you’ll like this film. It has that clubbing vibe, and I liked the vibrant colours which went with that feeling of partying in a club. It reminded me a bit of Spring Breakers, but I have to say that this had a lighter atmosphere to it, which clearly helped with the jokes. I did laugh. It’s not laugh out loud funny, but it’s still funny. I also liked the chemistry of the actors, they worked well together.

I have to say, by the end I wanted to spend more time with these characters.

All in all, I really enjoyed this film. It’s got everything a film with that title would make you expect to have. It’s a fun film, which I would recommend.

Gingerdead Man 2 Full Moon is a known company for producing really lowbudget films. I have to say, seen as Gingerdead Man 2 had more action than Evil Bong, I liked this better than that. I haven’t watched the original Gingerdead Man, and after watching this I wouldn’t rush out to watch it. The character of the Gingerdead Man is really crudely done. It’s obviously a puppet. There is some gore in this, but not an exceptional amount. It’s mostly a slasher movie with a killer Gingerdead Man on the loose. I would say it’s a bad film, and I can’t recommend it.

But if you like something a bit (well, actually, A LOT) daft, then you could watch this, I guess.

Local supporters of. the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, are making plans for national CF Week, in June, to raise awareness of this inherited condition, and to help fight ‘for a life unlimited’ for today’s and tomorrow’s children and young people. Part of this week will be ‘Wear Yellow Day’on 23 June.

The ‘Wear Yellow Day’ is in its infancy, as 2017 will be only the 4th year it has taken place. For the past two years the Emirates Spinnaker Tower has been lit yellow , to mark the occasion. The local group is delighted with the first of two banners, made possible by the generosity of the Pfizer Havant Community Fund, to help spread the word, throughout the borough.

Cystic Fibrosis is a ‘hidden’ condition, and people may not even realise that they know a person /family who live with it.

Cystic Fibrosis is rare. There are over 10,000 people living with CF in the UK, and nearly 300 in Hampshire. Nowadays children are diagnosed early, as the result of a routine heel test offered to all new born babies. A strict medical regime begins at once, and has to be undertaken every day for life. Imagine physiotherapy at least twice a day, oral, and nebulised medications, all of which thankfully prolong life. But never a day off! Many, but sadly not all, children survive childhood now, and adults are becoming middle aged, but often facing the need for transplant. Every person is different, and new treatments are

Hayling residents also have always been incredibly kind.

The Trust, a national charity, raises awareness, funds for research and other vital support/information services available to all CF families. Fifty years is a long time to fight for a cure, but many exciting advances have been made along the way. Despite real optimism, as we in the local group grow older, we really do need help to carry on our work. A lovely and entertaining evening it turned out to be for everyone that attended and those that performed I personally enjoyed it very much as did my team, it also worked for Boswells Cafe and overall that atmosphere had a great vibrancy.

This is definitely something we could and would support again with controlled access and now knowing how things sound lends itself to this type of community event, Christmas will definitely be an opportunity to do this again in the evening.
