CRAFT BEERS – Enjoy your local ales Going for Gold!

With spring just around the corner our thoughts turn to sunny days and refreshing beers. For many people beer means lager which I think is a pity as they are missing out on the many beers which are both refreshing and flavoursome. I am talking about Golden Ales or as they are sometimes known, Summer Ales. These are British, top fermented ales brewed with pale malt which gives them a lovely golden colour. Golden Ales are now one of the most popular styles of British real ales.

Up until the 1980s most ales were dark coloured but a couple of new breweries started to experiment and began brewing what became known as Golden ales. They were designed to appeal to the lager drinker who wanted a light refreshing drink but also to the traditional ale drinker who wanted some flavour in their beer. Golden

ales which are available in pubs as cask conditioned ale, or in bottles, are 3.5% -5% abv. They pour a lovely golden colour and have a balanced hop and malt taste. Golden Ales are best appreciated at cellar temperature (10º - 12º) but can be drunk cooler but are best not straight from the fridge.

I have been going around our local supermarkets to select a few bottles of locally brewed Golden Ales which I feel you would enjoy drinking on a sunny day.

Golden Ales also go well with Chinese or Thai food. These beers are also available from the cask at selected pubs across the South of England.

Itchen Valley Pure Gold 4.8% abv This New Alresford, Hampshire brewery opened in 1997 and now has a 20 barrel plant. Brewery tours are available. Pure Gold is made with both US and Czech hops. This pours a pale golden colour.

The beer has a grassy aroma and a very distinct citrus flavour. It reminded me of an American style IPA.

Hop Back Summer Lightning Golden Ale 5.0% abv Salisbury based Hop Back were one of the original brewers of Golden ales in the UK. This beer is made with East Kent Goldings hops and has won many awards. The name Summer Lighting comes from the title of a P G Wodehouse novel. This is a pale golden beer with a grassy aroma. The taste is quite bitter but this would be a very refreshing beer on a summer’s day. Perhaps a bit strong for a session beer.

Langham Sundowner Golden Ale 4.2% abv This ten barrel rural brewery is located near Lodsworth, between Midhurst and Petworth in West Sussex. It opened in 2006 and produces many fine beers. The Golden ale is made with barley, wheat and several types of hops. This beer pours an orange colour and would not be mistaken for a lager. It has a good balanced flavour and is more like a lighter traditional English bitter.

Ballards Nyewood Gold 5% abv This Petersfield brewery opened in 1980 and supplies many local outlets.

The Golden ale is made with Pearl malt, wheat and phoenix hops. It pours a pale orange colour, has a biscuit aroma and quite a tart lemon flavour.

Ringwood Brewery Boon Doggle Blonde Ale 4.2% abv This New Forest Brewery is now part of Marston’s plc and supplies 750 outlets across the UK. Described as a “Blonde” ale rather that a golden ale this pours a golden orange colour. The taste is quite subtle with a good balance of bitterness.

Goddard’s Scrumdiggity Golden Ale. 4% abv This Ryde, Isle of Wight brewery opened in 1993 and is now the oldest established brewer on the Island. This is a golden coloured beer brewed with Challenger, East Kent Goldings and Fuggles hops. It has a grassy aroma and a slightly astringent, bitter taste.

Is your child in foster care by agreement with Social Services?

Have they been there for a while without any mention of the children being returned to you? You can take action.

HMS Black Prince - 13,550 ton twin screw armoured cruiser

The Battle of Jutland took place on 31st May1916, when 14 British ships including three battle-cruisers were lost and some 6,000 men were killed, many of them from Hampshire. Germany lost three fewer ships and about 2,500 men; however, the Royal Navy won a strategic victory by retaining control of the North Sea. Recently Millstream Productions of Emsworth worked with Havant Sixth Form College and the Museum of the Royal Navy at Portsmouth, to produce an excellent film about the battle, which can be viewed online at: http://www.millstreamproductions.com/work/war-onthe-waves

Local war memorials, plus three recent finds, reveal the huge loss of twenty-eight men who lost their lives in the battle. The Havant War Memorial shows seven of these men, three of whom died in the battlecruiser Invincible, two in the battleship Malaya, one in the armoured cruiser Black Prince, and one in the battle-cruiser Queen Mary. Bertram J M Roberts, one of those who died in Invincible, was the second of four Havant brothers to be killed during World War One. Hayling lost one man in Invincible and three stokers in Black Prince.

from Black Prince and one from the destroyer Ardent, as well as listing Fleet Surgeon Hugh Leigh Norris, who was killed when the battle-cruiser Indefatigable exploded.

Emsworth suffered the most local losses, with fourteen known casualties. One sailor was killed when Invincible broke in half, one died when HMS Southampton was shelled and a PO stoker was killed when Tipperary sank on 1st June. Black Prince claimed five more men and six lives were lost when the newly built Queen Mary exploded. The death toll included two young Emsworth brothers, Walter and William Kennett, who were both stokers in Queen Mary. The ship's wreck was discovered in 1991 and is the protected grave of 1,266 officers and men.

In addition to the casualties, many local men survived the battle of Jutland including Hubert Walter Cousins RMA of Havant, who served in HMS Hercules and said afterwards that he didn't see anything of what was going on because he was 'battened down'; probably in a gun turret.

Havant will be marking the centenary with a service and an event at the Plaza. It would be interesting to know how many living relatives of those who took part in the battle still reside in the locality.

When Social Services become involved with your family it can be a frightening and unsettling time. You can feel the threat of your children being taken from you, which is an awful situation to be in. In many cases, Social Services will offer for your children to go in to foster care by agreement with you. No need for court proceedings, this will only be temporary while any concerns are addressed.

However, sometimes, temporary can continue for a lot longer than you might expect. So what do you do?

Michelle Hurst, specialist in child care matters says “If you have agreed for your children to be placed in foster care temporarily, you have the right to withdraw this consent at any time. This would mean that your children have to return to you care. HOWEVER proceed with caution. What this can also do is force Social Services’ hand and they may decide to issue court proceedings.”

So what should you do? Take legal advice. A legal advisor can talk to you about the circumstances and what has lead Social Services to ask you to agree to your children being placed in foster care. We can then advise you whether it is likely that Social Services will issue court proceeding or not.

Whatever the outcome, it is not in a child’s best interests to stay in voluntary foster care for an unspecified amount of time. It is unsettling for them, as well as you.

So if your children are in voluntary foster care, take legal advice now to know your options.

Hayling Junior Schools Join Forces to Feed The Fleet!

Year 4 children from both Mengham and Mill Rythe Junior Schools were thrilled to be invited to take part in a maths challenge at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

The Hayling schools enjoy working together wherever possible and this provided the ideal opportunity to join forces and represent our Island.

Pencils and brains were sharpened as our children, along with other schools, took part in the challenge to use their problem solving skills. They were tasked with calculating the amount of food required to feed King Henry’s fleet of sailors. The children then had to use this information

and a budget of 300 shillings to work out how much they could spend.

It was delightful to see so many enthusiastic and talented mathematicians working together! The children came back to school buzzing from their experience and keen to tell us everything they had learnt about King Henry.

A new business has announced plans to create new jobs in the Havant area.

Postcode Publications HAVANT ATHLETIC CLUB AIMING FOR SYNTHETIC TRACK AT OAKLANDS Havant Athletic Club has been in existence for at least 87 years, off and on, and is still without proper facilities. The Club was certainly in existence in 1889, possibly earlier, until 1914, stopped by the first World War, and also between 1930 and 1955. This later Club was run almost entirely by Frank Stockley of Elm Lane, Havant, and his reknowned athletic daughters, all training was in Havant Park.

One of these daughters, Daphne ( Hart), was still competing and coaching until her late 70’s, a few years ago.

The current club phase began in 1978, with much fanfare, dreaming even then of having our own all weather all year round track. there. In 2009 we moved for economic reasons, to Cowplain School. Even without this record breaking exceptionately wet weather, a grass track naturally becomes too soft to train on at all different times of the year, and not just the winter.

Havant Borough Council commenced creating a track by the old incinerator in Harts Farm Way in the late 1980’s. In the 1990’s there was even a scaled model of the Campdown project to the south of South Downs College involving proper facilities for athletics, rugby and football, involving the private sector; plans were for either an £8m or £12m scenario.

However Oaklands Catholic School and Sixth Form College, in Stakes Hill Road, Waterlooville, have now agreed to accept a J track on their premises where Havant AC will be based. So called because it is half an oval 400m track. The aim is to find the £142k funding for this, and HAC are hoping to raise £50k of this as soon as possible, asking it’s members to engage in whatever activities it takes to chip in and realise that total. The eventual aim is to realise a full 400m track one day.

ST FAITHS CLOCK FACE APPEAL £3,210.00 Two out of our three clock faces have deteriorated to the point where their details cannot be read even the hands of the clock are difficult to pick out.

The third (North) face was more recently refurbished, but even that looks 'tired'. Our aim is to refurbish all three clock faces so that they can be read easily, all over the town, and considerably improve the heritage offer of the town centre.

Residents and visitors will benefit from an improved recreational and retail experience. The church clock faces, once refurbished, will help to underpin the sense of Havant moving forward as a high quality shopping and leisure destination. SANTA’S MERIDIAN GROTTO DOES WELL

Children from Mill Rythe Junior School on Hayling Island recently competed in the Havant Area Tri-golf tournament. Tri-golf is a junior version of the sport where the children take part in a variety of activities that help them to develop their basic golfing skills.

The children had a fantastic time. Most

had never tried golf so they were amazed and thrilled when ended up winning the competition! This means that the Mill Rythe team has now been entered as the Havant representatives at the Hampshire School Games in Aldershot in the summer.

Alan Mak MP Report on my work locally and in Westminster

Both my constituency and Westminster offices have had a busy start to the year. A number of community projects are now coming to fruition, and there’s much for residents to look forward to.

My first Jobs and Apprenticeships Fair is taking place at Warblington School on Friday 19th February from 10AM-4PM. Celebrity plumber Charlie Mullins OBE is opening the event at 10.30AM and Jane Hamilton, careers editor at the Sun, will speak at 12 noon. With over 550 vacancies on offer, as well as expert advice on offer from Jobcentre Plus and the National Careers Service, there’s something for everyone. Attendance is free and no prior

There’s has been no let-up in my busy schedule at Westminster. I’ve helped implement the new English Votes for English Laws procedure (EVEL), and helped pass laws clamping down on “charity muggers” who chase people for direct debits, and backed small businesses in their quest for payments from bigger firms.

I’ve also lobbied Ministers on local issues, and secured visits to our area.

Chancellor George Osborne is backing local engineering firm Innova Design from Emsworth. Food Minister Liz Truss toured Hayling’s Northney Farm with me and enjoyed tasting their Ice Cream Farm. Local Growth Minister James Wharton visited Duns bury Hill Farm near Leigh Park with me as we continue its regeneration to create over 3000 local jobs. I am working hard to showcase the best of our area in Westminster.

Your Local Village Agents with Age Concern Hampshire The Village Agent service reaches out to older people in rural areas. The service is funded by Hampshire County Council and provides information to people over the age of 50 on a variety of services that help them to live independently in their own homes for longer.

The project co-ordinator said: “Village

The Village Agents for Northney and Hayling are Ken & Cathy; their voluntary role is not to compete against other agencies already

Village Agents have lots of resources and contacts and have undergone training with Age Concern Hampshire. They have also received training from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and are able to offer free basic home fire safety checks for older people.”

Park Community School news A new year, new challenges, fresh perspectives and new adventures...

Disneyland Paris A spectacular light display was one of the many highlights on Park’s trip to Disneyland Paris this year.

Both days were packed full of rides to try out, including Aerosmith’s Rock and Roller Coaster and the frightening Tower of Terror.

During evening lessons students had the chance to reflect on everything they had learnt, with a focus on understanding how the trip could link to future STEM careers.

A particular highlight was the light display. On a beautiful clear evening Disneyland was lit up, and all the characters and films “The light display was everyone has come to love were seen at their best. breathtaking.”

Skiing: Claviere Park students and staff visited Claviere (Italy) earlier this year on a skiing trip. Our talented students had a great time and progressed very quickly from beginner slopes to the more advanced ones by the end of the week.

A member of staff commented “We saw some amazing progress in the skiing across the week and all pupils thoroughly enjoyed their achievements. The hotel staff were really impressed with the students in terms of politeness, tidiness and overall behaviour. We were immensely proud of them all.

Watching the older ones chatting to the young hotel staff about skiing, university and life in general was a joy to behold.”

Food and Wine Chardonnay – Our love returns

By Jonathan Rogers of The Solent Wine Experience / Vin Wine Merchants Fifteen or so years ago we were drinking Chardonnay by the bucket load.

The heavily oaked, vanilla ladened white was all the rage, especially the Australian and Californian examples. Many of these new world producers went against traditional labelling designs by putting ‘CHARDONNAY’ directly onto the label in big bold lettering. This was an act of marketing genius, creating a brand name in itself no matter who the producer was. If it had Chardonnay on the label we bought it.

However this also caused confusion. Many people did not realise that Chardonnay was in fact the grape variety as well as the brand. Many old world producers, the French, Spanish, Italians etc labelled their wines by region or producer so were in fact losing out. White wines from the Burgundy region for instance are a prime example.

But the trend of putting varietals onto the labels has now spread educating the consumers more on the different grapes used in wine production.

When our love affair with Chardonnay fell apart, others took its place in our hearts. Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc, for a few years now, are our sweethearts but Chardonnay is winding itself back into our lives. The New World producers took notice and started to use less oak in their wine making practices. They looked more towards the European styles which are drier and more fresher taking away that heavily oaked flavours we turned away from.

The French have always believed in the Chardonnay grape. One of three grapes used in Champagne, these producers call it their ‘White Truffle’ and it seems now we consumers are flirting with it once again.

My new wine shop Vin Wine Merchants will be opening towards the end of February at 6 Queen St Emsworth so here is a small selection of Chardonnay wines I will be stocking: McPhearson Little Rascal Chardonnay, Victoria Australia - £8.99 Fruity white with hints of vanilla with clean fresh finish.

Producteurs Prisse Macon Villages Burgundy France - £12.99 Rounded fruit with balanced acidity and a long finish.

Chablis and Meursault are well known brands and are produced from Chardonnay but lost out on sales because ‘Chardonnay’ was not on the label and we did not know it was made from the grape.

Then it seemed our love affair for this grape diminshed. Its true that other varietals came onto the market but it seems our tastes changed from the oaked creamy wines to the more crisp dry whites.

Ratatouille Plait Each new year is a chance for a fresh start and I find that eating wisely is always top of my mind. The excesses of the festive season means for many a need to tighten the purse strings and reduce the waistline! I always find eating vegetarian food is a great way to consume fewer calories but also cheaper too.

Ratatouille is very versatile and my recipe uses the roasting method to cook and intensify flavours and produce a dish which can be used as the main course or a starter.

For those of you looking for a lower calorie version I would dispense with the pastry and add a tin of chopped tomatoes half way through cooking along with one cup of cooked quinoa and lentils, remember to stir and mix it well. This will be the ultimate low fat, high fibre, one pot meal!

Ingredients: 1 pack ready rolled puff pastry 1 large onion 300g aubergine 225 g courgette 450 g plum tomato 1 fennel bulb 100 g chestnut mushrooms 1 sweet red pepper 1 yellow sweet pepper 1⁄2 teaspoon dried thyme 1⁄2 teaspoon dried rosemary Handful shredded fresh basil 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 6 – 10 cloves garlic

Score tomatoes with cross and cover with boiling water. After 10 minutes peel remove core and cut into 8 wedges.

Quarter fennel and slice

Place cut aubergine and peppers into a baking tray. Drizzle with olive oil, herbs, chopped garlic and seasoning, mix well.

Roast in oven for 10 minutes

Method: Pre heat fan oven to 200 degrees 1. Score base of tomatoes with a cross and soak in boiling water 2. Cut onion and peppers into 12 wedges 3. Remove stalk from mushrooms and quarter 4. Cut courgettes into 1cm rounds 5. Cut aubergine into 2cm chunks 6. Place cut aubergine and peppers into a baking tin. Add chopped garlic and dried herbs. Drizzle olive oil and add seasoning, mixing well. Bake in the oven on 200 fan for 10 minutes. Take out of oven and add other cut vegetables and shredded basil leaves. Cook for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and strain off any excess liquid and place to one side 7. Roll out pastry and place and divide into thirds. Cut 3cms strips on the left had side and right hand side thirds. (as shown in picture) Place cooked ratatouille in the centre third of the pastry. Leaving a 1 cm edge at the top and bottom. If there are an unequal number of strips on each side start with the side with most strips.

8. Overlay the strips and continue all the way down. Seal the top and bottom with milk and brush the top of the platt with milk. Bake in the oven for 20 to 25 minutes on 180 or until golden brown.

Fold pastry into thirds and cut each side into 3 cm strips

Place cooked ratatouille in the centre of pastry and overlap strips

Finished plait- enjoy on its own or with a home-made tomato sauce

This charming timbered Inn nestled adjacent to St Faith’s Church in the centre of Havant has recently undergone a complete refurbishment under a new manager and chef. We visited this Inn one cold winter’s evening and were greeted by a roaring log fire and a warm smile from the bar staff. We elected to eat in the newly created private dining area which can also cater for private parties as well.

This is a charming pub to visit if only to enjoy the beamed interiors and has a full range of Fullers beers and wines.

The menu comprises five starters, three sharing platters and nine large plates ‘mains’ plus five ‘puddings’ and a specials board as well. Such a wide choice!

Smoked haddock fishcake, smoked salmon and a “sharer platter” of artisan breads and olives were selected. The main courses were indeed large - pan fried Calves Liver, 8oz Hampshire Rump Steak, Chicken Schnitzel and Chalcroft Farm Burger were ordered and heartily consumed. The food was well cooked and just right for a winters evening. I must admit that there was not much room left for the ‘puddings’ so we shared a mixture of ice creams which were also delicious.

Tracey and her team must be congratulated for their hospitality and quality of food – this has to be the best Gastro pub in Havant and well worth a visit.

We lease farm land and on it we have established a smallholding. Here we grow vegetables and rear animals for meat. Based at our industrial unit in Leigh Park, Park Design and Print is a commercial digital printing company that not only provides all of the reprographic needs for the school but also offers printing services to both businesses and the local commuity.

This provides opportunities for children to learn outside the classroom and gain work experience and employability skills for their life after school.

Pre-School

Opened in September 2015 we now have a purpose built nursery and pre-school on site. Springwood Park Nursery and Pre-School offers quality childcare and education 51 weeks a year to children from 0-5. We offer fun, interesting and challenging play and experiences for all children.

Growing minds, successful futures

Living in the Wider World Enrichment Day On 16th December 2015 Warblington held an Enrichment Day for the whole of the school. The Day was planned to focus on life outside school, what happens in the wider world and to give the students some understanding of what is available to them when they leave school.

Sessions were arranged to give the students maximum impact about life and what impacts us in society; therefore, we used a variety of outside speakers to help achieve this goal.

Sessions included key areas such as: ‘What is in our community and why do we have it?’ ‘What is out there after school’ and ‘What does it cost?’ There were also various master-classes in subject areas run by the local colleges.

National Literacy Day 2015

As part of the National Literacy Day 2015 students were encouraged to create a ‘Little Free Library’ in tutor bases. This charity initiative is a global strategy to encourage the love of reading across not only the UK but many other countries around the world.

At Warblington, tutors held rounds of competitions to design the best looking libraries in SAGE time (Supporting Achievements, Guiding Excellence) and then went on to build them with resources that were readily available in school. Part of the charity ‘Little Free Libraries UK’ specifies that people have to build these libraries out of sustainable resources so this was a focus for the actual build of the libraries. Norse South East – a new era for environmental services in Havant As of April 1st a new company, Norse South East, will take over responsibility for providing services such as waste collection, grounds maintenance and environmental services to residents and businesses in Havant.

With the council facing an estimated £1.8m annual budget deficit over the next five years the new company, a profit-making partnership between Havant Borough Council and service provider Norse Commercial Services, will help ensure job security, protect service provision and generate additional income to support the future work of the council.

The joint venture has been set up on an initial ten-year term, during which time all profits generated will be shared between the council and the business partner.

Councillor Tony Briggs, Cabinet Lead for Environment and Neighbourhood Quality said “The forming of this Joint Venture Company means that Havant Borough Council’s Operational Services will become Norse South East.

To our residents it will simply be a new name, with the same service, and operating from the current depot.”

All council staff from Operational Services will transfer into the new joint venture partnership, thereby securing local employment in providing local services. The company will be looking at the potential for further employment opportunities, including a number of apprenticeships, in the future.

The Urban Vocal Group Young singers from The Urban Vocal Group (UVG) took to the stage in December to perform their fifth annual concert at The Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth.

Sixty-six young singers performed unique arrangements of contemporary songs including ‘Uptown Funk’, ‘Story of my life’ and ‘Fix You’ to a sell-out audience. They were joined on by rising star Jerry Williams who performed her latest single ‘Boy Oh Boy’. Community Swings in to Accept £25,000 towards Hayling Island Park Revamp Pupils from Hayling College, the Mayor of Havant and local police officers were among those who came out in force to celebrate a £25,000 donation from The Southern Co-operative towards the rejuvenation Hayling Island’s Mengham Park.

The money was raised for Play Parks for Hayling as part of a community support scheme by The Southern Cooperative store on Elm Grove, Hayling Island. The money contributed to the

£80,000 raised by Play Parks for Hayling to renovate the island’s Mengham Park.

Lauren Crowned Rotary Portsmouth Group Young Chef of the Year Sixteen year old Lauren Kates a pupil at Petersfield School is the winner of the Rotary Portsmouth Group Young Chef of the Year Competition, held at South Down College on Saturday 23 January. Second was Harriet Morgan a pupil of Bay House School Gosport. Both Lauren and Harriet will now go on to represent Portsmouth Rotary Clubs at the Rotary District Final in Bournemouth on 27 February where they will test their skills against youngsters from across the South Coast and Channel Islands.

In total six aspiring chefs, aged 13/16, from Highbury College, Park Community School, Hayling College and Gosport schools, Bay House and Brune Park competed for a place at Bournemouth. Judging this close fought event were Andy Jessop from South Down College and Janice Wyatt a professional chief with many years of catering trade experience.

The six youngsters were given a maximum budget of £15 and two hours to produce their three course meal. All were complimented by the judges for their high standard of preparation, culinary skills

Her prize, awarded by Rotary District Assistant Governor, Linda Lawson, is a full size gadget packed Kenward Food Mixer. Harriet received a mini food mixer. The other competitors were given a healthy eating cookery book. All received a certificate.

The competition was organised by Havant Rotary in association with the Gosport Rotary club. Both club Youth Committee Chairman, Shirley Varnish and Ray Drake, thanked South Down for hosting the competition and the judges, teachers and parents for the marvellous support given.

Mengham Park now features a wheelchair accessible round-a-bout, a bucket swing, multiple climbing frames and more. The park was officially reopened by Havant Mayor, Leah Turner in August 2015 after 18 months of fundraising activity within the area.

The donation follows The Southern Cooperative store’s launch of a new community engagement programme, ‘Love Your Neighbourhood’, an innovative new community pilot aimed at bringing together the Hayling Island community to help make a positive difference to the local area.

Unique amputee football event supported by Portsmouth Enablement Centre Portsmouth Enablement Centre is lent its support to an amputee football event, held at the end of January.

Pompey in the Community ran a special event in January at Park Community School, Havant.

Some of those taking part were current or past service users of PEC. Mike Pink, Disability Development Coordinator for Pompey in the Community, said: “The idea for the day was to promote amputee football to give it a greater profile, and to encourage new players to give it a go.

“There were three teams competing against each other for their national league, a taster session for new people to give amputee football a go, and plenty of football-related activities that kept spectators entertained.”

We had a stand at the event, along with Steepers, our orthotics providers, and we provided information to make sure everyone was aware of what we offer, and the fact that we are a lifelong support service for many.”

Portsmouth Enablement Centre, which is part of Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, provides an artificial limb and orthotic service to thousands of adults and children across the South of England and is one of only 40 such centres across the UK.

Community Centre to remain open Havant Borough Council is working to ensure a community building in Leigh Park will remain open.

Temporary arrangements have been put into place whilst discussions continue to secure a long term solution. This will allow services to continue to be delivered at Leigh Park Community Centre, Dunsbury Way by Havant Citizens Advice, MIND and Big World Impact. This follows the surrendering of the lease by the Leigh Park Community Association.

HBC have been working to find a solution that will cause as little disruption as possible, to ensure this facility is well managed and remains open to provide services to the community.”

The council owned building will continue to be used by existing and new groups to deliver a range of activities including keep fit, Age Concern, Leigh Park Amateur Boxing Club, slimming clubs and dog training.

The Machine Girl is a Japanese mix of gory grindhouse and dark comedy. I thought it worked, with the film pandering to the expectations of the many fans of grindhouse. I loved the way the characters were likeable, with rooting for the protagonist a definite. There were some instances where the director used fake looking CGI gore, but there wasn’t too much, and anyway, it was balanced out by using traditional fake gore. The film looked grainy and really made me feel on edge in some scenes because of how gruesome the

attacks were. Look out for the ninja woman at the end and what painful hugs she brings.

It’s really inventive and fun. This film really knows it’s target audience and gives them a bucketful.

After a swarm of horror remakes, this new, original concept comes along to show that there are still different horror films to be made.

The story is the basic slasher plot of every Halloween and Friday the 13th film, but this one has it revolve around a house of cam-‘girls’. The killer is the usual deranged maniac with a mask from a range of horror films, but he does have quite an emotional back-story to back up the things he does in the later half of the film.

If you’re a horror fan, then this is definitely a fun popcorn thrill-fest. There’s also some great cinematography and the actresses and actors all play well and aren’t just there to look good in front of the camera. The only downside, if you’re looking for more blood-spillage is that there isn’t a lot, but there is an excess, in the second half of the film when it ups the tension, of creepy visuals. The jump scares are well timed as well, but this film does not rely on them at all, except it relies on slow tension, building up to the final assault on the ‘girls’ in the house.

The concept is explored really well, and it is great to see a maniac on the loose whom can use technology to see where the ‘girls’ are located in the house.

FILM FRIDAYS The Spring is pleased to announce and introduce Film Fridays, a new series of monthly film documentary screenings in the Langstone Room at The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre, East Street, Havant, PO9 1BS thanks to new screening equipment provided by the British Film Institute’s Neighbourhood Cinema Fund.

The Spring has tried to make the experience even better with some new chairs. A contribution towards the new seating was kindly made in memory of Josie Harper, who loved The Spring.

A question for readers with a bicycle or thinking of getting one – “Would you like to get out and ride a little further with a friendly, supportive local cycling group?

With you in mind, the ‘Havant branch’ of CTC Portsmouth has designed a series of rides aimed to build you up from a very easy ride through to a final challenge of riding from Havant to Winchester Aimed at new or 'lapsed' adult riders, male or female, the CTC’s special Cathedral Challenge Rides offer support, advice, and encouragement to get you ready and to find out what you can do on a bike, enjoy yourself, and discover or

rediscover, all the benefits of cycling.

Winchester Cathedral The first ride - which includes a free bike check - will be just after Easter. It is a short, easy ride to get to know one another and how to ride in the safety of a group.

Subsequent rides progress to the ‘Bronze Challenge’Havant to Portsmouth Cathedral and back. A flat route, mainly on cycle ways.

Another month of easy rides will include some low hills and greater distances. Then it’s the ‘Silver Challenge’ –

Havant to Chichester Cathedral and back.

The challenge concludes with the ‘Gold Challenge’ - Havant to Winchester Cathedral and back. Each ride will be accompanied by experienced riders and leaders from the club and include a refreshment stop.

There's no upper age limit, some of the riders are either nearing retirement or already retired and just like to cycle socially to meet others and keep up their fitness levels.

Throughout the summer the ‘Havant CTC’ will also continue with its normal weekly rides and other events to which you are also welcome.

There is no charge initially to join the rides, but after three rides should you wish to continue you would need to join the CTC. Annual membership starts at £21.50 and should you wish to you could cancelled it at any time.

Hayling St. Andrews Football Club In our previous edition we reported the on Hayling St. Andrews Football Club’s continued growth, with 11 teams competing this season in the Portsmouth Youth Leagues.

The Club held another successful recruitment fun day on 17 February at its Mengham Park venue in Harold Road, Hayling Island. Talking about the fun day and the Club’s continued phenomenal growth, club spokesman Nicola Terry said “We need coaches and assistants as well as parent representatives and committee members to help keep the club running.

We are very happy to say that the club now has FA Chartered Status and we continue to invest in the development of our coaches. To that end, we currently have ten Coaches trained to Level 1 standard and three at level 2. We are also lucky to have Ben Johnson as one of our coaches. Ben has been with the club since he was 7 years old.

He is trained to level 3 UEFA B licensed coach standard and is Head Coach for those of school reception year age to school year 5. Our Head coach for those of school year 6 and above is Stuart Hawley. Stewart has been coaching with the club for 16 years.

Community Clubs at South Downs College

Kirsty Taylor is the College Sport Maker at South Downs College in College Road, Waterlooville, PO7 8AA. Kirsty has informed Postcode Publications about community sports clubs and activities currently running at the College.

On offer are: Volleyball, and Archery Both activities take place at the College on Monday evenings.

The Volleyball Club meets for an hour from 4 – 5 pm. Sessions are open to all

aged 15+ and are free for South Downs College students.

Last but not least is the Archery Club.

Archery starts at 5.15 pm and runs till 6.45 pm. The Club operates in the Sports Hall and is for those aged 11 – 19 years. No previous experience is necessary, but booking is essential. All the necessary kit is

provided. The cost of booking is £30 for non-members for a 6 week block or £20 for Members. Annual membership is available for £20 and comes with reduced session costs and a SDC Archery T-shirt.

REG’S QUIRKY GARDENING TIP You can’t race the seasons and seeds do not have to be sown exactly when the packet tells you.

My advice, with outdoor sowing is watch the weather, not the calendar, as seed sown later when conditions are right usually catches up and surpasses crops put in earlier that had to suffer during bad weather.

Reg comes from a family that has been involved in horticulture for several generations, and before this they were all farmers, back to the 1740’s. He trained over a five-year period at Pershore College of Horticulture.

Since leaving there in 1972 he has worked in the nursery and garden centre business, spending 25 years as a garden centre manager.

Reg was one of the regular presenters on 'Gardener’s Diary'; which was one of the longest running, continuous gardening series, giving hands-on tips and advice for over seven years, on ITV and satellite channels.

Today we will be offering some advice, exercises and stretches which are good for those suffering with neck pain. Neck pain can just come on for no reason and recovery is difficult to predict.

The main problems people suffer from are mechanical neck pain, WAD (whiplash-

associated disorder) or cervical spondylosis (neck pain due age related to wear and tear to bones). Some also suffer from headaches (cervico-genic headaches) due to their neck pain.

Hands on physiotherapy treatments including; massage, mobilisation, manipulation, myofascial release, neural release, combined with stretching and exercises is an effective treatment for neck pain. Also acupuncture is very good to release the tight muscles associated with neck pain, and is especially good for those suffering from headaches too.

On 31st December 2015 Holly Styles tried out Havant Leisure Centres brand new pool hoist with her parents.

Holly has additional needs, she has physical and learning disabilities which means that she needs extra help when accessing the pool without the hoist she was unable to get in and out of the pool to go swimming with her parents.

It was her parents who encouraged and advised on Havant Leisure Centre to buy a hoist as the pool was difficult to use without it. They provided Havant Leisure Centre with information about funding.

Horizon successfully applied for funding with The Brucewake Trust who funded half of the full amount and Horizon funded the other half. The hoist cost £8000.00 in total and has transformed the facilities for people with additional needs.

Holly’s parents were delighted, Gail Styles said ‘The new hoist takes the weight off so she has freedom in the pool, it’s great. Swimming is one of Holly’s favourite things to do.’

The hoist enables people to easily get in and out of the pool. It has its own chair so the users chair doesn’t get wet and it is run on an electronic system so it can move them smoothly from the pool side into the pool and vice versa.

The new hoist compliments the additional needs changing place at Havant Leisure Centre which were refurbished funded by Hampshire

County Council. The changing place is suited to those with disabilities and additional needs.

The changing rooms have a height adjustable adult-sized changing bench, moveable beds and a hoist system helping the users to access the facilities more easily and comfortably.

Aaron Comley, Manager at Sea Breeze Residential Home said ‘Before we were limited by travel time as we could only go swimming in Portsmouth however now we are able to come to Havant it is much easier for Holly and all our other residents.’

Horizon Leisure Centres hopes that the new hoist alongside the changing rooms at Havant Leisure Centre will mean that many more additional needs users and their family will be able to access the pool with ease and confidence.

Spring is firmly within our sights and we’re ready to ditch the winter blues and embrace a different kind of blue... make-up.

The hot hue for eyes this season is blue. Whether you play it cool with a subtle navy liner or go bold and bright with a slick of cobalt shadow, this trend can be worn as a fun daytime look or be turned into a sultry, evening one.

It’s now the perfect time to look towards a new season as there’s so much inspiration around – here are our favourite easy-wear hair trends that are set to dominate this Spring/Summer…

Luxe locks We love a luxe finish. For an expensive-looking barely-there wave on mid-length to long styles, (as seen at Chloé), prep dried hair with Redken Iron Shape 11 Finishing Thermal Spray, then use your straighteners to smooth, rotating 180 degrees through the mid-lengths to encourage a gentle bend to the hair. Alternatively, for more shape and more bounce (think early 2000s Gisele), you can’t beat a salon blow-dry. Our team are experts at super-speedy styling and can give even the limpest hair jaw-dropping volume. Prices start from just £10.

Applying a shadow primer to the lid will help keep any eye makeup stay put which can be quite important when going for blue.

No one wants to end up looking bruised instead of beautiful!

Use a navy liner to enhance the lash line then use a powder and brush to blend.

‘Don’t care hair’ On the flipside of luxe is another catwalk favourite – ‘Don’t Care Hair.’ Think updos with attitude, rather than overly-dressed styles. It’s about taking a classic hair up style, such as a chignon or bun and reworking it with a cool, less contrived feel. Look to celebs like Alexa Chung and Jennifer Lawrence for inspiration.

A pop of colour on the lips is carrying over from the Autumn/Winter season although now we can forget the gloss as it’s all about matte lips. If you’d rather use your favourite shade than invest in a new lip colour, blot once applied and gentle brush translucent face powder over to create a matte look.

Colour crazy Rainbow hues and pastels are still hugely popular but at the other end of the scale, balayage, ‘bronde’ and ‘strobing’ (google them!) are ideal for those looking for subtle but ultraflattering results that highlight your best features (think swishy supermodel hair as seen on Gigi Hadid and Rosie H-W).
