The community building is named after the Stride family who farmed the Manor Farm in Denvilles for many years, and in memory of Ron Stride who died recently.

The Stride family had a farm shop at the end of Hallett Road which closed prior to development of the site by Barratt David Wilson Homes.

Early ideas during planning the development, it was thought that the shop should be rebuilt, but there was no interest shown in running it. The idea was then to have a building associated with the new allotments being provided on the site.

This then evolved in recognition that the Warblington and Denvilles community were seeking a place in which to hold meetings and events, and the scouting movement needed a place for Scouts and Guides to meet.

The opportunity was seized with the co-operation of Barratt David Wilson Homes to use the Community Infrastructure Levee arising from the development to pay for the building to be built by their apprentices.

Postcode Publications will be furnishing the Stride Building from funds raised by this newspaper.

The Scout Movement is a movement that aims to support young people in their physical, mental and spiritual development, that they may play constructive roles in society, with a strong focus on the outdoors and survival skills.

Postcode Publications Wild Hedges for Urban Edges in The Trosnant Schools, Havant

Havant is set to benefit from an exciting new initiative designed to give school children and residents access to free, healthy, seasonal food on their doorsteps through the planting of ‘wild’ urban hedges.

The Tree Council has partnered with The Federation of Trosnant Schools to plant a ‘Wild Hedges for Urban Edges’ hedge, which is funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. This is the second hedge to be planted as part of the project.

Havant Borough Councillors, volunteers from Groundwork, teachers, pupils and The Tree Council, together with Havant Tree Wardens planted fruit trees and over 500 hedging and fruit bushes along an existing bare fence line at the school grounds today.

Tree Council Programme Director Jon Stokes said ‘We normally think of urban

hedges as formal clipped green boxes, but if planted with fruiting trees and bushes and left to grow wild, with a minimum of level of cutting, hedges can provide a fantastic source of local, free, healthy food – for both people and wildlife.’

Battins Ward Councillor Ralph Cousins said: ‘The Council is always looking for innovative projects where it can help the local community build something they can enjoy for generations to come, in the hope that it reintroduces young people to the idea of foraging and gets them involved with planting, pruning and picking the fruit they have helped to grow.’

Clive Mulligan from the Trosnant School said ‘ We are delighted to be the first school in Britain to benefit from one of these wild hedges and it will form an invaluable part of our outdoor learning environment.

Crafty ' J’s' Sisters We host regular craft & gift events at South Hayling United Reformed church hall in aid of local charities. We started in

October last year for Tickled Pink, we then went on to do one each month for different charities.

At Easter we raised £156 in aid of 'Thumbs up for Alfie' a 6yr old with a rare cancer. In June we did two Strawberry Teas raising £190 for Breast Cancer Care, 12th September £70 for Sam's Haven and 24th October £100 for Breast Cancer Wear it Pink.

Towers Garden Flowerbed

Residents of Towers Garden in Langstone were delighted to take advantage of the LVA October Coffee Morning to informally open the newly restored flowerbed in Towers Garden.

The restoration of the flower garden was a Community Project supported by Hampshire County Council. The flowerbed, originally laid out by the developers of the estate in the 1960’s had, over the years, somewhat deteriorated and become unsightly.

The first step was to replace the original brick wall with sleepers, followed by clearing out the old soil, plants and bushes.

This work was carried out by Towers Garden residents who then laid out the pebble base with funds raised from a bric- a –brac/ book sale.

The final design was the work of Edward Bowyer of Stansted Garden Centre who created a design aimed to sit with the overall seaside ambience of the setting. To achieve this, the grasses and airy plants that were chosen, mainly blue in colour, are used to create sound and a sense of motion with help from the prevailing off shore wind. It was also considered important that the chosen plants would require minimum maintenance being easier to look after.

This project, specifically designed to restore and enhance an important feature of Towers Garden, has benefited from the continued support of Councillor Ray Bolton, the HCC, the LVA and Stansted Garden Centre. The monitoring and maintenance of the communal garden will be the responsibility of Towers Garden residents.

The staff from ‘Prison Me? No Way!’ returned to us for the fourth year. Once again the day was an outstanding success, thoroughly engaging the Year 9s involved and giving much to think about. It was interesting that some of the Year 11s who had taken part in the day two years ago still recalled some of the key messages and activities and spoke of the day’s power. The feedback from pupils showed just how affected they were by the various activities and visitors as you can see Domestic Abuse Education session – “I learned how controlling people can be, even how discreet people are about it,” “that it happens every 6 seconds and how sad it is.”

Ex- Prisoner – “Anthony learned to take education seriously and that it is very important,” “inspired me to try hard at school and make the right choices.”

Drug awareness session – “Made me NEVER EVER want to take drugs.”

Street scene scenario – “Told me what anti-social behaviour meant,” “We learned to avoid situations involving anti-social behaviour” “That prison is nothing like the films” “I told my parents about the day and how inspirational it was.”

“The deterrent for prison was the underlying message.”

I certainly hope that we can host such an event next year as it’s in undeniably an inspirational day.

Cosy Havant

Cosy Havant is an energy-saving scheme, funded with Green Deal Communities Fund, has been extended until March 2016 for new sign-ups.

The scheme offers a cashback contribution towards the cost of energysaving products. These will improve the energy efficiency of our residents’ homes and their health, as well as help reduce their energy bills.

The current offer is as follows: • 50% cashback towards the installation of solid wall insulation • 25% cashback on other energysaving measures including new boilers, other insulation and double glazing • 100% grants may also be available if residents are in receipt of benefits

Prenuptial agreements are growing in popularity and recently the family court* has reinforced the view that they should be upheld.

There is no specific law saying that prenuptial agreements should be adhered to upon separation. In fact, the law does not allow people to enter in to agreements that preclude them from exercising their rights under statute.

However, case law has provided some guidance in the treatment of prenuptial agreements and whether they are enforced when parties to a marriage separate/divorce.

The court’s approach is that full effect should be given to a prenuptial agreement that is: • Freely entered in to • With full appreciation of its implications • Unless it would not be fair to hold the parties to it Therefore, if both parties have entered into an agreement which they both understand and have both taken independent legal advice, it is likely that the agreement would be upheld and the court would not interfere further.

If the outcome of adhering to the agreement would be such that one party would end up in an unfair position, then the court may interfere. For example, if one party ends up homeless or destitute in some way. The court would consider whether that party had a ‘real need’.

Q&A Is it worth entering in to a pre-nup?

It is a personal decision. If both parties wish to protect assets and are both willing to agree to it, then it will provide peace of mind that if the relationship were sadly to end, matters will resolve themselves simply without the need for any court battles or wasted money.

How does this apply to me?

You may be considering marriage and have assets that you would like to preserve for your children from a previous relationship. In the event of the relationship breaking down, you can take steps to protect any assets that you want your children to eventually inherit.

Stronger, More Flexible, Pain-Free Readers My name is Natalie March from Physio-logical, a chartered physiotherapist in PO9.

We are treating a lot of runners who are training for London and Brighton marathons plus local runs at the moment. Also with the massive growth in people taking up running we thought it would be good to share with you some strengthening exercises to help improve your muscle endurance for running.

Here is a testimonial from one of our runners; “I had my first run event of the year, on average I ran 20 seconds a mile quicker over 5 miles than have for years. Really took me by surprise! A high-flyer can also be an alcoholic ...

It took a long time for Process Consultant Paul Gray to admit he had a drink problem, and when he finally did there was no eureka moment but instead was a result of years of mess ups, bad habits and hospital admissions. Paul wasn’t homeless or a drunk on a park bench as a stereotypical alcoholic is described, but instead he was a high-flyer in Central London where social gatherings and alcoholic-fuelled lunches were part of the norm.

Alcohol can play a significant role in and around the workplace and is often perceived as a stress-reliever, antidote to a demanding job, or an opportunity to network with colleagues and clients, however, drinking heavily on a daily basis can lead to decreased organisational activity and be incredibly damaging to your health.

To mark this year’s Alcohol Awareness week Paul shares his story with Portsmouth Hospitals.

“Working in Central London meant there was always a social gathering invite, and it was the norm to drink at each event and later return to the office with more than a few beverages running through your blood stream,” says Paul.

“I then found that the more senior my position became the more I drank, and my social and work life started to blend into one. I was in my early 20’s when I started to fall into a pattern of putting a shot or two of vodka into my morning orange juice.”

Paul says he successfully participated in the national campaign Dry January, and because he completed it so easily he didn’t think he had a problem. “Before I knew it I would drink to excess throughout the remainder of the year because at the back of my mind I thought I was able to give up if I wanted, and having January off meant my body was healthy,” laughs Paul. “It’s ridiculous the way an alcoholic’s mind works!”

Paul says the next nine years were spent

repeating the January cycle, but that some resulted in the odd cheat day, but as it was an event he would let himself off.

At age 29 Paul was signed off work with stress.

“In reality it was the drink that was causing the stress, but I was signed off work for three weeks, and with no work-routine within the first week I found myself drinking even heavier. Then when I returned to work I was in a worse state then when I left and my boss instantly noticed, but it was part of the office culture where others had been signed off work because of ‘alcohol-fuelled stress’ so I was no different to anyone else.”

Paul says he decided to quit his job and along with Natalie, they travelled around Europe for sixmonths. “Travelling made my drinking worse as it was like an extended holiday where wine was acceptable with every meal, and because we were in holiday-mode Natalie didn’t analysis just how much I was consuming.”

After six boozy months Paul decided that he needed a fresh start so got himself a new job in a PR firm, but before he knew it he was soon looking after clients in swanky wine bars that resulted in morning and afternoon tipples of wine.

I ask Paul to put his drinking into prospective and he tells me that on average he would drink around 20 beers a day, or eight beers, a bottle of wine and half a bottle of Vodka a day.

“I then had a drinking-fuelled incident which still makes me cringe to this day, and that was at my friend’s wedding where I was tasked with being the Master of Ceremony. To my embarrassment I got so horrendously drunk that I couldn’t even stand up let alone speak to announce people.” Paul says the incident still cuts deep that he could let his friend down so much. “The next day my friend emailed me saying how disappointed he was and I instantly knew I had screwed up. I had a deep sense of shame

and it was a bullet I could no longer dodge.”

Paul says he left his job and spent a few months trying to drink less, but gradually his appearance started to change which resulted in his skin turning yellow, known medically as jaundice which is a telltale sign that there was something wrong with his liver.

“I went to the GP and he instantly referred me to QA Hospital’s emergency department. My body was failing and I had internal bleeding from where my liver was shutting down. I was admitted into hospital for one month which was one of the worse experiences of my life,” says Paul before explaining that the first few days were like hell where he was hallucinating, angry and critically ill, but after one month of being out of hospital he started drinking again which resulted in another hospital admission the following year. “It was at this visit that the alcohol team at the hospital had been introduced, and this time when I left they gave me a strategy to follow, which included attending AA meetings.”

Paul says at first he attended four meetings a week, then gradually two and within a year he would have considered himself recovered. “I had a good, sober, productive year. I was back in employment, my relationship was good and I naively thought I was over the worse of it, and because of that I could have one or two drinks here and there.” Obviously the one-or-two drinks that Paul then consumed resulted in drinking in excess once more and resulting in a QA Hospital admission once more.

“It is now six years later and that admittance was my final one, and I strongly believe that my turning point was down to the strong relationship between the ASNS and community staff and giving me access to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, which is a type of cognitive behavioural therapy that focuses on behaviour and makes the

link between behaviour and the things that are important in our life. It has successfully suited my recovery better.”

After six years of being dry Paul is now selfemployed, is involved in politics, has got back into the hobbies he once loved, “I regularly now play golf!” laughs Paul, and has even bought a house with Natalie.

“My health is pretty good as well – life really is on the up for me, and it just goes to show that anyone can turn their life around, even after so many failed attempts – it is never too late!”

Sue Atkins, Alcohol Specialist Nurse Says: “Paul’s story is an amazing example of how your health and wellbeing can improve rapidly with the right support. The support Paul received enabled him to improve his health, go back to work and enjoy life again.

“1,685 people were referred to the Alcohol Specialist Nurse Service in 2014/15 with 2,104 people actually receiving treatment. The treatment does work and Paul’s story is a great example of that.”

Mr Timothy Mellor, Facial Plastic Surgeon practicing at Spire Portsmouth Hospital: The two main steps you can take to maintain a youthful-looking skin is to protect your face from UV light and to stop smoking.

People who have outdoor hobbies, like sailing or spending a lot of time gardening, may find that their skin ages more quickly. That isn’t to say that you shouldn’t spend time outdoors, but rather that if you do, protect your face by putting on sun block.

The other thing that can age your skin is smoking as it reduces the amount of oxygenated blood that reaches the tissue, and that reduces the skin’s healing potential.

As for more practical things you can do to look your age, I’m afraid there isn’t a panacea of an anti-ageing cream. There are some skin products designed by specialists that are

proven to be effective to reduce lines and wrinkles, but they can only be prescribed by a doctor.

The product range I mainly work with is Obagi, which can help improve the natural cycle of the skin and give it a more youthful appearance.

I often say that when it comes to ageing, we talk about one of two problems. The first is the ‘paint or wallpaper’ of the face – such as lines, wrinkles or blemishes. These are the things we can treat with skincare products, injections or fillers.

I also carry out fat transfers, where I take fat from the tummy or thighs and inject it into the face to give a rounder, smoother and more youthful appearance.

The second problem is with the ‘bricks and mortar’ of the face – the muscles and soft tissue that tend to droop and drop with age.

These concerns could include drooping eye-lids, bags under the eyes or a sagging neck. In these cases we could discuss surgical solutions, such as a facelift or neck lift.

Sometimes patients come to me and say they ‘need’ something doing. I always tell them that nobody ‘needs’ to do anything

to make their face look younger. It is all about choice. The most important thing is that you do what you feel is right for you.

“I lost five stone but my tummy still held me back!”

Despite losing an amazing five stone through a weight-loss programme, there was still something about her body that Charlene Peacham was unhappy about.

With two Caesarean scars and an appendix scar, she had a fold which neither diet nor exercise could shift.

Mengham Junior Wins the Portsmouth High School Technology Challenge Day Four of our Upper School girls attended Portsmouth High School’s Technology Challenge Day. The Year 5 and 6 girls were challenged to design, build and test a sustainable transport system which involved them in thinking, planning, constructing and presenting on the day.

Two judges, Andrew Webb, a, local consultant with experience in energy, engineering and technical projects and Dr Rinat Khusainov, a lecturer, from the University of Portsmouth’s School of Engineering formed the panel.

SIGNAL’S HOME ALONE

17 October 2015 saw the ‘unveiling’ by the Mayor of Havant, Councillor Leah Turner, of the restored up-home signal for Langstone Bridge signal box, which was operated by lever No 2. There was an up-distant signal situated further back in the direction of North Hayling. On the Havant side of the bridge there was the downhome signal for the bridge signal box and, on the same post, facing the opposite direction, there was the up-distant signal for Langstone Station signal box. The work, which took almost one year to complete following its removal in 2014, was managed by Ian Clark Restoration and carried out by S&T Cover Ltd of Eastleigh. It was paid for by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and commissioned by the Hayling Billy Heritage Partnership Board (Hampshire County Council, Havant Borough Council and Hayling’s Best).

Hitting the Cold Spots The scheme is following a similar format as previous years consisting of: • Freephone advice line • Home visits • Funding for boiler repairs or replacements • Provision of electric oil filled radiators • Grants for winter emergencies • Home Fire Safety Visits • Help to switch energy provider Grants will be given particularly to homes that are: • The most energy inefficient • Do not have gas central heating • In rural areas • In Winchester district Central Heating Fund This is funded by DECC (Dept for Energy and Climate Change) and assists fuel poor households which do not have central heating. The aim is to connect them to mains gas where possible, or LPG if not.

This fund can be accessed via the Hitting the Cold Spots Team.

Alan Mak MP Report on my work locally and in Westminster

Festive lights across the constituency mean Christmas is now in full flow. I hope PO readers are enjoying this exciting time of year. Both my constituency and Westminster offices have stayed very busy, and a number of community projects are now coming to fruition. My first Havant MP Jobs & Apprenticeship Fair takes place at Warblington School on Friday 19 February 2016, so if you’re a local business offering jobs or apprenticeships please get in touch.

Equally, anyone looking for a job, or keen to switch careers, should come along.

Christmas and New Year are particularly busy for our postmen and

women so I’ll be visiting local Royal Mail sorting centres to say thanks to them for their hard work. They’ll certainly be delivering my official MP Christmas card, designed by Austin Buchanan, aged 6 from Hayling Island. Thanks to the Spring Theatre, and Hayling-based Northney Dairy and internet retailer The Contemporary Home for their generous sponsorship Our small shops and high streets rely heavily on this time of year, so we must support them by buying local. In 2016, I’ll be launching the Havant Small Business Awards to recognise our best local businesses. I’m now a “Dementia Friend” after attending a

dementia training session in Emsworth.

With an ageing population, we all need to spot the signs of dementia in our friends and relatives.

Our community groups continue to do great work. I’ve joined Leigh Park Working Men’s Club as a member, and helped launch the construction of a new community centre at Nursery Fields in Denvilles.

Our local Royal British Legion branches and schools were involved in moving Remembrance Sunday services and parades.

I enjoyed meeting many residents at these events keen to support our veterans. Our current Armed Forces do excellent work too. Regular PO readers will know I’m undertaking a year’s “work experience” with the Royal Navy alongside my MP work.

I’ve enjoyed visiting Portsmouth Naval Base, and spent time on board HMS Tyne (an offshore patrol vessel) and our two new aircraft carriers.

Westminster has been busy over recent months, including key announcements like

the Strategic Defence & Security Review, the Autumn Statement, and the Spending Review. There were three highlights for me.

Firstly, £178 billion will be spent on defence equipment over the next decade, including buying new F35B jets for our aircraft carriers. Local businesses Lockheed Martin and Wartsila are involved. Secondly, the schools funding formula is being changed meaning more money for our local schools.

I’ve lobbied the government on this since I was elected. Thirdly, a £6 billion cash injection for the NHS, a 30% boost for counter-terrorism funding, and no cuts to the police budget or tax credits. All great news for our area.

My next informal drop-in surgery is on 15 January. No advance booking is required.

A busy time for Spirit-of-The-South Gosport Music Festival, on Sat 7 Nov, had to be one of the best competitions we have entered. Being one of the smaller Acappella choruses, 24 ladies in all, we felt more suited, more relaxed, and thoroughly enjoyed the day. At the end of the day we were awarded Three Highly Commended, and Three With Distinction.

On the evening of Wed 11 Nov, we took part in the annual Memorial Service arranged by Mr Lee Fletcher, at St Johns Cathedral, Portsmouth. It was a very touching service, and as the acoustics are beautiful there we really enjoyed the evening, as I'm sure the congregation did.

Portsmouth Dockyard held its

Victorian Festival of Christmas, on Sat 28 Nov, and we sang a mixture of traditional carols, and Christmas songs in " Fagins Bar " much to the delight of the children who sat on the floor at the front of the stage. We were thrilled to find that our "warm-up act" as we called them, were Shep Wooley and his band. All in all, apart from the weather, it was a really good day for us.

Community Space to Hire

Work Experience Placement at CERN! I am Archie Hayward, I am in Year 10 and earlier this year I started thinking about work experience. I was wondering where I could go, so I decided to write a letter to the Head of the Research Facility at CERN in Switzerland.

CERN is the site of the Large Hadron Collider best known around the world for firing atoms at almost the speed of light around a 27 km ring and breaking them to see what is inside.

Anyway, I digress... about two weeks later the Head of CERN wrote back saying that they wanted me to be the first ever child to do work experience there. I was absolutely gob-smacked; I did not expect that it would go ahead! I am looking to go into a career in engineering when I am older so this will be the perfect experience to have on my CV. I hope this experience inspires students to do something different with their work experience as you never know what will pay off!

Archie was recently nominated by Warblington School for the University of Southampton Young Physicist of the Year Award which recognizes interest, aptitude and enthusiasm in the subject.

Students from the South of England who had been nominated for this Award were presented with their certificates by the Head of Physics and Astronomy at Southampton University, Professor J Flynn (pictured with Archie). The Award scheme is sponsored by the Ogden Trust.

Apprentices lay career foundations with Barratt Homes FLYING THE FLAG

Five star house-builder Barratt Homes has taken on seven new apprentices to work on developments in the region as the home-building sector continues to grow.

Over the next two years, the apprentices will be combining college study with practical training giving them an industry recognised qualification and a valuable trade. As a division Barratt Southampton now has 22 apprentices.

apprentices who will be studying construction management and four trade apprentices.

Barratt Homes community liaison manager Anthony Dimmick, said: "You can become an apprentice at any stage of your career, whether you have years of experience under your belt or are looking to make a start after leaving school.

“Our apprenticeships provide the perfect foundations for a career in the

construction industry,’’ he added.

“We are delighted to have offered apprenticeships to these new recruits, many of them have demonstrated their keenness and desire to work for Barratt Homes by asking for work experience with us before applying.”

He said the apprenticeships will provide valuable on-the-job training and experience which will not only stand them in good stead for their careers ahead but will also create the much needed skilled workers of the future.

“Apprentices are the lifeline of our business on site and in the offices, and we have had many success stories with previous apprentices completing their qualifications and progressing a career in either their chosen trade or going onto site management with us.”

Barratt Developments, which was named the best employer of apprentices in the country at the National Apprentices Award last year, has created more than 3,000 new jobs in the last year alone, and has pledged to take on 1,100 apprentices, graduates and trainees between 2014 and 2016.

The annual RSPCA collection week at the PETS AT HOME store in October was hugely successful.

The sum of £711 has been raised and several shopping trolleys were filled with donated pet food. Thank you very much to everybody who stopped with our volunteers and gave so generously.

Keeping The Stubbington Ark animal shelter afloat is a difficult task and even the smallest donation makes a big difference.

Just to give a little example of how your money is being spent: £5 will run a heat lamp for sick animals for 2 weeks.

Food and Wine Christmas Day Wines With the amount of different wines, beers and spirits on the market today, it’s easy to go overboard and splash out of products that may not fit your tastes.

When it comes to wine with your Christmas day feast you can take it to a whole new level of ‘amazingness’ (not actually a word but you know what I mean) by drinking wines paired perfectly with the food. Ernest Hemmingway once said "In Europe we thought of wine as something as healthy and normal as food and also a great giver of happiness and well being and delight. Drinking wine was not a snobbism, nor a sign of sophistication, nor a cult; it was as natural as eating and to me as necessary."

Its all about matching the flavours of the wine with the flavours of the food.You don’t want a wine that’s going to overpower the food or a wine that’s going to destroy the flavours of the food.

Think about the flavours of every component of your meal especially sauces and gravy.

If you are having a starter, typically something fishy like salmon, either smoked or fresh or prawns, then a nice crisp white pairs perfectly. Sauvignon Blanc springs to mind with its fresh crisp acidity and citrus, gooseberry characters.

New Zealand is the land of Sauvignon Blanc and they produce wines with intense characters and biting acidity. If you prefer it a bit more refined and delicate then head to the Loire Valley and try a Sancerre, Pouilly Fume or Touraine Sauvignon. They still have the lovely fresh crisp characters but tend to be a bit more elegant with less acidity.

Turkey tends to be the choice of nation for the Christmas feast and softer whites are perfect. My love affair of Chardonnay has returned with a vengeance. We used to drink this by the gallon fifteen years ago but our tastes for the heavily oaked whites changed and sales dropped. It’s now coming back as producers are using less oak to mature their wines. California is the place to seek out quality driven Chardonnays’ which are full bodied, creamy with soft vanilla characters. Burgundy on the other hand is the home of Chardonnay and produces lighter bodied wines with more green fruit characters. If you want red with your turkey, then stick to lighter reds like

Pinot Noir. These won’t overpower the flavours of the meal and will balance nicely.

For game like goose you need a heavier drier red. Bordeaux reds suit nicely which use Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes or Cotes du Rhone which is made mainly from Shiraz. These wines will supply the weight you need to balance with the heavier meat flavours.

Christmas pudding, my all time favourite, requires a big rich sweet white to cut through the intense cooked fruit flavours.

These wines finish the meal off nicely and can be savoured and enjoyed.

Winter Rose This month’s dessert recipe has the ‘wow ‘factor, it will certainly impress your guests! Not only is it good looking it is tasty too. The soft apple is a delicious contrast to the crispy pastry.

Make sure you always have the ingredients to hand- puff pastry in the freezer and mincemeat in the cupboard along with a bag of fresh red apples!

Ingredients:

1. Halve apple and remove core

2. Slice apples to approx. 2 mm thickness and cover with lemon juice on both sides

I jar mince meat 1 pack ready rolled puff pastry 2 large red apples Bottle lemon juice

Method: 1. Wash apples and cut in half and remove core.

Cut apple into 2 mm slices. Place on a large plate and cover each slice with lemon juice.

Spread slices over plate and microwave on high for one minute and then check to see if it has softened increase by 30 seconds and repeat until all apple slices cooked through but still firm.

2. Roll out pastry and cut into 6 equal pieces by folding whole rectangle pastry into half and then into thirds cut with kitchen scissors.

3. Lightly flour table top and roll each piece of pastry until 2 mm thick and make sure there are no holes.

4. Overlap apple slices on the edge of the pastry strip about 1.5 cm from the top. Place small line of mincemeat under apple slices. Take care not to put too much mincemeat. Fold pastry over the mincemeat and bottom of the apple slice. Seal end with water and press firmly.

5. Roll up pastry with apple and mincemeat to create rose and dampen end with water and press to seal.

6. Place pastry rose in bun tin. Cover with foil leaving a tear on one edge to relieve moisture.

7. Bake in fan oven 180 for 15 minutes and then check and then a further 10 minutes or until pastry is cooked through. Remove from bun tin while still hot and place on wire rack. Dust with icing sugar.

8. Enjoy winter rose with vanilla ice-cream.

3. Divide pastry sheet into 6 equal pieces and carefully roll each strip until 2 mm thick, keeping rectangular shape

RADIO PRESENTERS WANTED Back in the May/June 2015 edition of Postcode we brought readers attention to a new classic rock and blues radio station, The Flash which was broadcasting locally on 87.9 Mhz FM for one week only. The test broadcast attracted a lot of attention and the station, which is based in offices near The Curlew PH, Petersfield Road, Havant is now available on DAB in the Greater Portsmouth area. You may need to retune your DAB radio and then select “Flash” on the station menu. Station founder Martin Kirby stated, “You don’t need any experience in radio or even a certain type of voice to join the Flash team. All we require is a love

EBP South - Amazing People Awards Park Community School were nominated for the EBP South Amazing People Awards for Amazing Secondary School who promote enterprise and employability and we are delighted to have won.

Sarah Coles, Head of Information Advice and Guidance and Rights, Respect and Responsibility, said “young people need to be prepared for a world which is rapidly changing. Many of the jobs they will do when they leave school do not yet exist and they will probably have several jobs during their lifetime. It is therefore essential that schools and teachers are at the heart of careers education for young people, ensuring that they receive the guidance and motivation needed to lead them towards a successful career”.

Tania Harding, Assistant Headteacher, was presented with our award, “Park Community School is delighted to receive this award. It is important to us that our pupils are ready for employment and we provide enterprise opportunities within the curriculum and through relevant work experience, including our Print Shop. Connecting with local businesses and offering mentoring from leaders has been key in pupils gaining skills to be successful in the workplace”.

Rotary Club of Havant Young Chef Competition Park Community were hosts for the annual Rotary Young Chef of the Year Competition, which was a resounding success. All that were involved with the competition, commented on our amazing facilities, including the judges, one of which, a Head Chef from The Brookfield Hotel said “the facilities are amazing, better than my own kitchen”.

We Can Do It Awards Park Community School were nominated for the We Can Do It Award for Best School, following the Race At Our Place, whereby all staff and students ran 2.6miles from the school to Leigh Park Gardens and back again. This is something the school has done for 4 years now, but this year Park raised a huge £2000.

The school was shortlisted down to 6 nominees and were invited to attend an Awards Ceremony at The Kings Theatre in October and WE WON!! Georgie Harris, Teacher from Park Community School received the award, “It was a genuine surprise as there were so many worthy nominees, but a credit to all staff and students at Park and just proves that if all of us can work so well together to support each other, in turn we are raising awareness and much needed funding for a cause that touches so many people’s lives”.

All students worked really hard and were a credit to themselves and the school. An amazing achievement, especially Izabella Darmanin, our youngest contestant who came first and now progresses to the next round which will be at Southdowns College in January. Congratulations to Izabella and to the other contestants from Park, Emily Briggs, Tayla Chapman and Lauren Hollis.

Children In Need Park Community School embraced Children In Need, with a variety of fete style fundraising activities to include space hopper racing, welly wanging, wet sponge throwing, baby photo competition, sweets in a jar and lucky dip. Whilst the students enjoyed a non-uniform day, the teachers made a fantastic effort in dressing up for the day and in total Park managed to raise £520.

Christopher Anders, Headteacher said “I think Children In Need is a very important charity for us as a school to support because it’s a charity the children can relate to. All of the children want to get involved because they know, in turn, it is supporting other children”.

• Warm up the soil for early sowings by covering an area with a polythene sheet, or cloches. If weed seedlings germinate under this all well and good, just hoe them off.

• Seed potatoes are around now, buy them soon while there is still a good choice of varieties available. Stand them in trays with the end with the most buds uppermost in a light, frost-free place to begin to sprout or “chit”. Plant them outdoors in late spring.

• Remember to feed your garden birds and make sure that water is also available for them.

Rowlands Castle Painting Society

Members of the Rowlands Castle Painting Society enjoyed a fun filled evening at their Christmas party organised by Gill Dollery, Barbara Wood, Sally Williams and a willing band of helpers put in a lot of work to ensure the evening went well. There was a pictorial game "Name the artist" to test the knowledge and "Guess the Object" which made for an entertaining evening.

There was a great raffle with many prizes which added to the evening and thanks goes to Leonard Wood who manned the table!

Members had been invited to enter three competitions, to bring along a Christmas card they had painted, a Holiday painting and a Wildlife photograph. The winners were as follows: Wildlife photograph was won by John Davies, the Holiday painting was by Garry Miller and finally the Christmas card winner was Maureen Aldous.

The Society meets up again in the Parish Hall, Rowlands Castle on the 5th January 2016.

‘Low & Slow – Owning, Restoring & Occasionally Even Flying,Vintage Light Aircraft’ - a talk by Stephen Slater - Monday 22nd February 2016 1900 for 1930 hrs

This fascinating and entertaining talk, by one of the leading figures in light aviation, will draw on almost 20 years of hands-on experience on everything from a VWpowered Luton Minor, through Tipsy Trainers and Indian-built Aeroncas, to the restoration of the unique ‘Biggles Biplane’ replica of a 1914 BE-2c observation biplane.

Steve Slater became Chief Executive of the Light Aircraft Association in September 2015, heading Britain’s biggest sport flying association. While the Association supports all types of flying including some state-ofthe-art homebuilt designs, older types also represent an important facet of the LAA’s role - as well as Steve’s personal passion.

A friendly face and a helping hand needed For elderly residents in our region sometimes the issue with getting out of the house to visit the theatre is not just finding the time but being able to travel to and from the venue. Havant-based The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre hope they’ve come up with a solution.

From January to April 2016 The Spring will be looking for volunteer Transport Co-ordinators to help with the running of a pilot project that will provide taxis to and from specially chosen events for older people living in Waterlooville and Hayling Island. The initiative is being supported by Hampshire County Council, AndiCars and Hampshire Libraries.

Sophie Fullerlove, Director of The Spring, is a big believer in making the venue more accessible to the local community, and said “This scheme has been set up to support those who may not otherwise be able to attend events at The Spring. I want to encourage people who might have public transport limitations, maybe don’t have a car, or are just anxious about coming on their own.”

In order to make the scheme work, a team of volunteers are required to accompany the taxis and audiences from designated collection points in Hayling and Waterlooville to the venue and back again.

Volunteers on the scheme will receive a free ticket to the event they are supporting and will then return with the group in the taxi, hopefully encouraging a sense of community and gathering their feedback.

The Spring are looking for outgoing people who are able to commit to help the running of the scheme and be a friendly face to anyone nervous about attending an event on their own.

WW1 Exhibition Hayling Island U3A will be exhibiting a fascinating set of posters at The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre, Havant from Monday 11th January until Friday 1st April, illustrating how WW1 affected life at home on Hayling Island.

Time line banners have been prepared for each year of the War, providing a contrast between World events, life at the Front and daily life on Hayling Island, as recorded at the time in the School log book, the Parish Magazines and local newspapers.

Extracts from local Council records of the time show how the people of Hayling rallied to government calls to grow more potatoes and to convert every scrap of land to the cultivation of a special form of vetch (a widely distributed scrambling herbaceous plant of the pea family, which is cultivated as a silage or fodder crop.)

This led to Hayling gaining the nickname ‘Beanshire’ A section of the display is dedicated to the men of Hayling, who served in WW1.

Just one poster depicts the women of Hayling who were left to raise the children, tend the crops and maintain the services normally undertaken by the men.

LIVE THEATRE ON HAYLING New Year is a time for the members of Hayling Island Young Actors to perform their own panto based on the ever popular Strictly and with the addition of fairytale.

‘Strictly Fairytale Come Dancing’ is at 7.30pm from 28th to 30th January with a matinee on Saturday.

Then HIADS starts building its set for ‘The Ladykillers’ which opens on 5th March. The play was written

by Graham Linehan (creator of ‘Father Ted’) and is based on the Ealing comedy of 1956 that starred Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers. It was a huge success when it opened four years ago and is now available at your local theatre.

Set in 1956 the characters are the same as in the film but the story unfolds with some differences so that it suits the stage. It is exuberant and inventively funny and we are looking forward to sharing the joy of this play with our audiences.

Havant Camera Club held its annual Exhibition at the Meridian Centre, in Havant, with photographs submitted by its Members featuring subjects as varied as wildlife in Britain and abroad, architecture, nature, transport, portraiture, and humour! Members came from three other local Clubs, and the general public enjoyed it too.

In addition to our season from September to May, we had five trips out on summer Tuesday evenings - each with a particular topic, including instruction on technique if wanted. We had a competition at the start of the season to see who'd done best, - voted on by the Members!

We meet on Tuesday evenings at the St John Ambulance Headquarters, Fraser Road, Bedhampton – opposite the Rugby Club. Then the art scene in Havant, throughout May, is for you, and new talent is always welcome. The dates are the weekend of 7th and 8th May for Hayling Island, and 14th and 15th May for Greater Havant and Waterlooville.

Next year will be the 10th anniversary of the May Days Arts Trail. This is a very popular community event, organised by artists, for artists, from beginners to professionals. The Arts Trail invites the public into homes, studios and halls, to see

an enormous variety of paintings, photographs, prints, sculpture and ceramics, jewellery , textiles, leather work - you name it, somebody somewhere is making it, beautiful, useful or thought provoking.

DYNAMO YOUTH THEATRE’S BRAND NEW CHRISTMAS SHOW!

Nativity is an enjoyable film, with its fair share of laugh-out-loud moments (mostly from Marc Wooten). It’s perfect entertainment for all the family to sit along with. The story isn’t much cop, but this film is less about the story, than about springing joyous scene after scene. And it does it.

Martin Freeman boasts well as the teacher of the class, and he works well alongside Marc Wooten to achieve the laughs. The children all play pretty well for non-actors, thus their performances enhanced. This is perfect family entertainment.

Bad Santa

Before Bad Teacher there was Bad Santa, another addition to the crass comedies that have come out over the past years.

This one centres on an alcoholic, antisocial thief, who finds a way to get away with robberies by dressing up as Santa.

For all it’s outrageous humour, it’s the emotional scenes that stick the most, with scenes of Billy Bob Thornton drinking at a bar ringing emotional alarm bells for his character. This character needs help, and it’s that core that makes most of the film.

However, there are some funny, if a bit rude, jokes in the film. It’s a film certainly for the fans of American Pie-style humour. Those are the level of the jokes, so be warned if you think this is a family film. It is definitely not. It’s a funny film, not hilarious, but still quite funny and it does bring an edgy darkness sensation to the whole proceedings.

Third, is Daylight. Days are shorter and it can be dark until about 10.00 am. Make yourself visible and safe with lights on your bike. Small, light and very bright rechargeable LED lights won’t break the bank. Also think about how visible you are. Wear bright clothing or a fluorescent rain jacket, or a reflective yellow 'Sam Brown' type belt and strap.

If this all sounds off putting just remember those lovely dry sunny days we treasure in winter, between the bouts of horrible stuff.

If you have to ride in bad weather, these tips should help keep you safe and comfortable. If you don't have to ride, then when it is snowing or treacherous, perhaps better to put another log on the fire!

So this winter keep cycling whenever you can! You never know who you might bump into.

I met a man in a coffee shop. He had arrived on a fabulous modern Tricycle. I was very impressed by what I saw.

I quickly drank my coffee. I could not wait to find out all about the bike/trike outside, parked for all to see. With its full sized road wheels, disc brakes and 21 gears, I asked him what sort of riding he did and would he care to join one of the CTC club's easy rides. He looked at his coffee companion and looking at each other they said 'I will if you will'.

So, at the next ride easy rides I half expected Trikeman’ and friend to arrive.

The rest of the group were ready to welcome them. Sadly on the day neither arrived. Without them, we set off just after 9.30 am. Andy Henderson led us on a tour of Hayling Island. An easy ride downhill along the Billy Trail took us to the foot of the Island. Most of us followed Andy across the common, but part of that route meant crossing gravel and shingle. To miss the hazardous surface, experienced Martine Hebblethwaite led a small group safely along the road to the Ferry Boat Inn car park. There we joined up again and together returned to the Mad Hatters Tea Room for a welcome cuppa in the sunshine and a chatter with friends!

Refreshed, we rode off again to the Eastern end of the Island, passing the old lifeboat station, along off-road pathways and a route back to the centre of the Island. There Christine Roberts was ready for us with a surprise.

Cakes and a hot drink. After enjoying her garden hospitality, we left Chris with the washing up. We made our way back through the quiet roads to Northney, over the bridge and along the Billy Trail into the Spring car park; our leisurely half day ride complete. ‘Trikeman’ and friend will never know what a good ride they missed – unless of course they read PO9 & PO11. Winter Cycling.

Winter is here, but it doesn't mean that your bike has to hibernate. We can all continue to cycle during the winter, just the same as walking. So what is different about winter cycling? There are some things we have to think about.

First, the cold. Whenever we go out we dress for the weather, which in the winter means warmer clothes. That is true of cycling; but as we tend to generate body heat it is better to wear several layers that

we can adjust as our ride gets going. If not sure whether you have enough clothes on (or too many) go outside before you ride and judge how it feels. Remember that the effort of riding will warm you up. Gloves, of course, are important as hands are stuck out in front holding on to metal handle bars and not doing a lot of exercise.

Second, Rain and snow. We deal with rain in summer, spring and autumn, but winter brings wet leaves on to the road. If you come across a leafy patch take extra care.

Steer in a straight line and be gentle with your brakes. The same is true of snow and ice. By themselves they are not reasons to not go out, but treat the conditions with respect. Just as we do when walking. Deep puddles could hide a pothole, so extra care is needed. Narrow tyres have less grip; knobbly Santa taking a leisurely winter ride on his new bicycle mountain bike tyres give more grip.

Beverley went on to say “We are in the close season at this time. The junior league only runs in the summer months so at the moment it is mostly practice, practice, practice! We are delighted now to have three of our players attending South East Regional Junior training once a month in Surrey. They are very much enjoying it. It is helping to develop their skills yet further and they bring these back to the club to raise our own standards too.

We are also running a ‘Young Referees Course’ over the coming weeks. Eight of our juniors are involved in that. It is a great opportunity for them to learn more about the game, gain a Volleyball England recognised qualification and to begin to understand the game from a referees perspective.

South Hants Volley Ball Club The Best in the South East South Hants Volleyball Club based in the sports hall at Horndean Technology College in Barton Cross, Waterlooville, PO8 9PQ was named in November as the best community satellite club in the South East. The award was made to recognise of the Club’s ability to get young people to take up the sport of volleyball.

The Club has brought junior Volleyball into the heart of Havant. Sessions for young people are held every Saturday from 11.00 – 13.00 and are for 10 – 18 year old boys and girls. Whether they have played volleyball before does not matter.

South Hants Volleyball Club is registered with Volleyball England, the sports National governing body, and meets all the requirements for running a junior club including fully qualified coaches.

The Club is one of more than 6,900

community satellite clubs across England.

Community satellite clubs receive National Lottery funding to provide a range of sports to young people who otherwise may not be regularly active or lack the confidence to join a sports club. The National Lottery funding has helped get almost 300,000 young people in England actively playing sports since it became available in 2012.

Some 23 young people regularly attend the South Hants Volleyball Club’s sessions. The Club has a team in the local junior volleyball league.

Hayling St Andrews Football Club Appoints New Chairman Following the resignation of its Chairman Geoff Lewis in September, Hayling St. Andrews football club took the step of appointing its youngest ever chairman, Alex Johnson (pictured left) to replace him.

Aged 25, Alex Johnson has been a member of the Football Club since the age of 6. In his 19 years at the club he has already served as a player, coach and manager.

Speaking about his appointment to the Club’s highest position, Johnson said "I am honoured to be stepping into the role of chairman. I would like to thank Geoff for

the fantastic job he did during his tenure and for his contribution to the club's growth and stability in the last few years.

“I have been a part of this club for my whole life and I'm looking forward to building on the work Geoff and the committee have done in the last few years.

I strongly believe in giving back to the community. As a club we have an army of volunteers. They run the club on a day to day basis, through coaching or on the committee."

Alex has strong ties to Hayling St Andrews. His parents Pam and Richard have been volunteers at the club. Reflecting on the fact that his father Richard had been his first coach, Alex said "Because of seeing my dad do it I was always keen to go into coaching. When at age 13 I stopped playing

football I was starting to think about whether I should try coaching. A year later, when I saw Stuart Hawley coaching a team at Mengham Park, right outside of our family house, I asked him if he needed a hand. I proceeded to help Stuart with coaching the team for 4 years until I left for university.

After I graduated, Stuart asked me if I wished to manage a team. At first I was apprehensive. Being a manager is a big step up from being a coach. Anyway, I was a manager for 3 years, which was an amazing experience.

“Youngster's football now is so much more than playing a game. Playing sport helps broaden young minds with life lessons that stick with them forever. Learning about teamwork, fair play, organisation, and still doing it in a way that allows kids to have fun."

Only two months into his role as Chairman, Alex already has big plans for the club. He said "Our main ambition as a club is to have at least one team per age group, from 16 to 8 years. As things stand the club is in a great place. In just 5 years we have grown from having just 1 team to where we now have eleven. The oldest teams we have in the league at present are the U13's. We have two U 13 teams. They are in the A and C divisions within the Portsmouth Youth League. I am delighted that at the highest level of coaching within the Club we have a level 3, UEFA B licensed coach. Tim Randall Sports Correspondent Reports Football: Havant & Waterlooville FC The Hawks continue to struggle in the Vanarama National League South. As I write they are in the relegation places.

They have a number of quality players but so far this season Manager Lee Bradbury has been unable to find the right formula in the league. Hawks have though been performing well in the Hampshire Senior Cup and the FA Trophy.

Languishing at the bottom with just three winsis out of character. The Hawks have been shipping goals. Already they have conceded more goals in the league than in the whole of last season. (See reporter Simon Payne’s fuller analysis of Hawk’s season to date in this edition of Postcode). Manager Lee Bradbury will need all his experience in the weeks ahead to tighten-up Hawks leaky defences.

National League survival depends on it.

Pompey The goals have at last started to go in for Pompey. Still looking strong and purposeful and with the goals now going in, they are still a value bet for promotion.

Perhaps as Division 2 Champions. For the fans there is much to look forward to at Fratton Park in the new-year. Following their 1-0 win over Accrington Stanley in round 2, Pompey go to Championship side Ipswich in round 3. Fixtures will be played between 8 and 11 January. Pompey last played Ipswich in the FA Cup in 2008 and went on to win the Cup at Wembley!

Havant Rugby Club Havant RC’s campaign in London 1 South Division so far has not lived up to expectations. The team’s home form saw them win four of the six games played at Hooks Lane up to 5 December. On the

road however, they had failed to win a single game. With an away trip to arch rivals Gosport & Fareham RC facing them on 12 December, Havant’s head coach Will Knight, said after his sides home win over local rivals Tottonians on 5 December, that the victory had come at just the right time to boost the teams confidence ahead of the difficult trip to Gosport. Any game against the old foe is likely to have an extra edge, but this time it meant a lot to both teams with each toiling in the bottom half of the league.

In this troubled state, British tennis is unlikely to prosper any time soon. The hapless LTA seems bereft of any understanding or idea of what it takes or how long it needs to produce talented men and women players capable of competing for Great Britain at Grand Slams and for men in the World Group of the Davis Cup. A clear science exists to explain the pathway to the development of talented in young people in sports. The mystery therefore is why the LTA apparently is completely unaware of its existence and that of the scientists working within the field?

Tennis Within days of leading Great Britain’s long awaited victory in Belgium to win the Davis Cup for the first time in 79 years, world number two Andy Murray could not contain his frustration with the Lawn Tennis Association, the body responsible for tennis in Great Britain. Speaking about the LTA’s lack of action and support to help young British talent Murray said “It is concerning not to have any juniors (good enough to play) in the grand slams. That is something we were always good at” The LTA is wealthy. The Association’s income between 2010 and 2014 was in excess of £335m. Much of it coming from the All England club’s annual surpluses from the Wimbledon Championships that the club pays over to the LTA.

Local Business Wear it Pink Local business owner has taken an ethical approach to launching his company, helping to raise around £250 in his first few months of trading.

John-Wayne Hughes from AdvanceSRM, who specialises in clinical soft tissue and remedial massage, decided he wanted to run a different kind of business. From the very start of his venture based in Horndean, he has committed to supporting charities, both directly and by working with other local corporate supporters.

Through charity massage sessions, he has raised around £250 for three charities, Whizz-Kidz, Naomi House and Breast Cancer Now. Donating his time to help corporates fund-raise, such as The Southern Co-operative and Bouygues UK, or directly supporting charities at community events such as Naomi House at the Great South Run, John has a passion for helping people, which is one of the reasons he started working in massage therapy. First discovering massage whilst living in Japan, through a technique known as Seitai and as a teacher of the martial art of Aikido, he regularly used massage as part of his recovery from training. This interest in physical well-being meant a change of career, from teaching children with special needs to dedicating his time to helping people relieve pain and get back to health, was the right move for him.

After studying with the London School of Sports Massage at Southampton University and gaining a level 5 qualification in Clinical Sports and Remedial Massage, John set about growing his business in an ethical way.

There is no shortage of new beer publications coming onto the market, indeed they are almost as prolific as the rise of new breweries. Craft beer is very popular with many authors writing guides to enable the beer drinker to get the most enjoyment from their drinking. Here is my own personal roundup of some recently published books which would make good gifts for the beer drinker in your life.

CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide 2016 – editor Roger Protz. CAMRA. £15.99 This is the real ale drinker’s bible. The only criteria for entry is that the pub serves a good range of well-kept cask conditioned real ales and has been recommended by CAMRA members. Over 4,500 pubs are listed including the Robin Hood in Havant and the Coal Exchange, Emsworth. This book also lists all 1,400 breweries in the UK, many of which may be visited by the public. If you are keen on real ale then this is the book for you.

Good Pub Guide 2016 - editor Fiona Stapley. Ebury. £15.99.

This annual guide lists over 5000 reader recommended pubs. The main criteria seems to be food but premises, atmosphere and range of drinks are also taken into consideration. If you like eating out in pubs in different parts of the country then this guide could be useful in ensuring that you have a reasonable dining experience. Local pubs listed include: Lord Raglan, Bluebell and Sussex Brewery, Emsworth; Wheelwrights, Havant and Maypole, Hayling.

The Best Beer in the World – By Mark Dredge - Dog ‘n’ Bone. £16.99 This is a beautifully illustrated hardback book which is part travelogue and part beer guide. If you like Bill Bryson and his gentle observational style of writing then you will enjoy Mark’s anecdotes about visiting bars and breweries around the world. A great present for any beer lover.

The Beer and Food Companion – By Stephen Beaumont. and Jacqui Small. £25 Another lavishly illustrated hardback which is part beer book and part cook book. I think this is a book to encourage beer drinkers to cook with beer and get them to think about matching beer styles with different dishes. It would also appeal to a keen cook who may be interested in experimenting with beer.

By Jeff Evans. CAMRA. £12.99 CAMRA publications are aimed at the serious beer drinker and this volume by noted beer expert Jeff Evans gives the reader an up-to-date history of beer and brewing. He provides a lot of information about how to really taste and appreciate beer. There are over 80 pages of information about the multitude of beer styles that one may encounter ranging from Golden Ales to Porters and exotic beers

such as Lambic and Trappist ales. It is well illustrated and is a worthy addition to any beer enthusiasts’ library.

Brewology: An Illustrated Dictionary for Beer Lovers – By Mark Brewer. Skyhorse. £11.30 This is an amusing yet informative book listing hundreds of beer terms and illustrating some of them with around 100 beautifully drawn pictures. A useful book for any beer lover but also something which is visually captivating. A good stocking filler for a beer connoisseur.

Beer for the Genius – By Richard English. For the Genius. £16.95.

This is a very thorough yet easy to read book which covers almost everything you need to know about beer. Beer in history, types of beer, Craft brewing, home brewing, how to taste beer, etc. are all admirably explained in a succinct way. If you are new to beer and want to learn more about its evolution then this book would be a good starting point.

Strange Tales of Ale – By Martyn Cornell. Amberley. £12.99 This book is a delightfully entertaining read for any beer lover. Martyn has researched 28 tales to do with beer including the origin of the Ploughman’s Lunch; a fascinating account of how beer was supplied to soldiers in Europe after D Day; the Great Beer Flood of 1841 and the origin of binge drinking. This book would make good bed time reading for any beer devotee.

Brewing Britain:The Quest for the Perfect Pint – By Andy Hamilton. Bantam. £12.99.

This is really an encyclopaedia of beer in that it covers everything from beer tasting, brewing, beer styles, growing your own ingredients and so on. It is written by a very knowledgeable home brewer and gardening enthusiast who really imparts his passion for the subject. A great gift for any

home brewer but also useful for any beer lover.

Short Course in Beer – By Lynn Hoffman. Skyhorse. £9.87 This book is really aimed at hospitality industry students and attempts to educate them about matching beer with food, beer styles, beer tasting and the effects of alcohol. It is also of general interest to the beer drinker. If we want our pubs to survive then bar staff need to be educated about beer and able to advise customers on different styles and what beers to drink with different foods.

The Craft Beer Revolution – By Steve Hindy. Palgrave. £10.99 This book studies the rise of craft brewing in the United States from a business history perspective. It is a very detailed account of how a small number of microbrewers changed America’s drinking habits and led to a whole new style of beers being produced. There may be lessons to learn for British brewers from this factual account of American craft brewing.

The Beer Bible – By Jeff Alworth.

Workman. £14.99 Weighing in at 644 pages this really is an extraordinarily comprehensive account of all things to do with beer. Jeff goes through every possible style of beer charting its origins, how it is brewed and then selects a range of beers of that style and gives detailed tasting notes. If you are keen to expand on your beer repertoire then this book will guide you through the myriad of styles that are now available at your local supermarket or specialist bottle shop.

How to Host a Beer Tasting Party –

By Carl de Vito. Rockpoint. £19.99 Not so much a book but more of a game.

This kit consists of beer tasting notepads, shot glasses for holding samples and a comprehensive book on beer tasting. The idea is you invite a few friends around, buy a few bottles of contrasting styles of beer and get people to sample them and compare notes. I am sure it could be great fun, especially after a few rounds. An amusing present for any beer loving family.

Swedish massage This gentle form of massage is probably the most common. A therapist uses long strokes, kneading and circular movements to increase circulation and promote relaxation. Light to medium pressure is used to ease tension and relieve stress.

Hot Stone massage Heated, smooth basalt stones are placed on areas of the body to warm and loosen tight muscles and balance the energy of the body.

Once the muscles are warm the therapist uses them to apply pressure and ease away soreness and tension.

Aromatherapy Essential oil blends are selected and used by the therapist to energize de-stress, detoxify and stimulate the emotional state. Technique is similar to Swedish massage.

Deep tissue massage Deep tissue massage therapy is similar to Swedish massage, however the pressure is deeper. This type of massage is beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension and focus on the deepest layers of muscle tissue. This is a good choice for people who are regularly active and suffer with muscle tightness or are recovering from sports injury.

Sports massage Sports massage is specifically developed for people who partake in regular physical activity.You don't have to be a professional athlete to book one, it's also very beneficial for people who are active and work out. The focus isn't on relaxation but on preventing and treating injury and enhancing athletic performance. It can help with mobility and rehabilitation after injury.

Combinations of techniques are used. The strokes are generally faster than Swedish massage and usually include stretching as a common technique.

Hayling Island Men’s Shed It is with great pleasure that we announce the creation of a new Men’s Shed group on Hayling Island.

After a successful public meeting it was agreed to go ahead and a subsequent meeting has created a temporary committee of Gerry Johnson – Chairman, Tony George – Secretary and Roy Cadoux – Treasurer.

We currently meet at the United Reform Church, Hollow Lane, Hayling Island, PO11 9EY in the small hall each Thursday between 2 & 4pm for a cuppa and

a chat and to discuss how to move forward.

So if you are interested in becoming a shedder or just curious to find out more of what is involved please feel free to just come along and make yourselves known.

What is a Men’s Shed?

A Men’s Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where he feels at home and pursues practical interests with a high degree of autonomy. A Men’s Shed offers this to a group of such men where members share the tools and resources they need to work

on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. They are places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction. A place of leisure where men come together.

A Shed’s activities usually involve making or mending in wood (e.g. carpentry, joinery, turning, carving, whittling, marquetry, furniture renovation) but may include metalworking (milling, sheet metal, welding, etc.) bike repair, gardening, electronics, tool renovation, boat renovation, model

engineering (model railways, planes) and even building a car! Reclamation, reuse and restoration will feature strongly – and some say that is true of the men too! Although Sheds mostly attract older men, some have included men of any age, women and young people. Whichever activities are pursued the essence of a Shed is not a building, which some don’t have, but the network of relationships between the members.
