Don’t Shoot the Piano Player Jack Lane is one of two ‘Quarry’ class saddle tank locomotives that were the first and arguably most successful ‘standard’ design of narrow gauge locomotives produced by the Hunslet Engine Company to their own design.

Around 50 locomotives recognisable as members of the class; albeit with a number of detail variations, were built between 1870 and 1932, principally for service in the Dinorwic and Penrhyn slate quarries of North Wales.

Contraction of the slate quarrying industry due to falling demand for slate as a roofing material and the gradual introduction of diesel locomotives on the remaining rail operations meant that all were withdrawn from service by the late 1960s, although a good number survived into preservation in Wales, elsewhere in the UK and in North America.

The reputation of the ‘Quarry’ for a combination of robustness, simplicity and performance made it the ideal choice for

the Hunslet Steam Company’s plans to resume manufacture of narrow gauge steam locomotives.

In 2005 key components for a batch of four were ordered and manufacture began at Statfold. Assembly of JACK LANE began and was completed in November of the same year.

JACK LANE; No 3904 of the Hunslet Engine Company steam locomotive numbering series, represents one of two variants of the ‘Quarry’, with an open footplate and a taller chimney in order to keep smoke clear of the footplate.

Since entering service JACK LANE become one of the Statfold Barn Railway’s roving ambassadors, sharing visits to the Amerton Railway, Bala Lake Railway, Beeches Light Railway, Golden Valley Railway, Lynton & Barnstaple Railway, Middleton Railway, Welsh Highland Railway and West Lancashire Light Railway as well as the ‘Railtex’ railway industry trade exhibition.

West Leigh beavers and cubs Sam Tate and Jude Beck from 1st West Leigh scout group received Chief Scout Silver awards from District leader Lesley-Anne Bush - the highest award a cub can get. They took part in numerous activities such as archery, camps, sleepover, hikes, rifle shooting and backwoods cooking to obtain this badge.

West Leigh beavers and cubs out having fun and learning new things on a Making Waves Project boat trip run by Wildlife Trust staff, departing from Emsworth on the Chichester Harbour Conservancy’s Solar Heritage boat.

Their activities included plankton fishing, using a Secchi disc to measure water transparency, seal and bird spotting and investigating wind and current.

Recent figures from the Government show that there has been a steep increase in the number of homeless people in the UK over the last 12 months due to rising rent costs and lack of affordable housing for people on a low wage.

Last year it was estimated that 90,000 children would face Christmas without a home and it is thought an extra 3,000 children will be in the same situation this year. Some of these children are classified as homeless as they are living in B&B’s or hostels, temporary accommodation provided by the Council whilst they are investigating the situation, which all too

frequently turns out to be a long term solution. A small proportion of these children will, however, be on the streets this Christmas.

Homelessness is unpleasant at any time of the year, but can be especially isolating at Christmas. Whilst there are various centres around the UK which do provide assistance and shelter for those who are homeless over Christmas, given that there was a 22% increase in attendance last year alone, there are concerns that people will have to be turned away from such places this Christmas.

What do I do if I am facing homelessness?

If you are facing homelessness within the next 28 days you are entitled to make a homelessness application to the Council.

You can either do this by yourself or come to Swain & Co who will be able to provide you with legal advice and prepare your application for you subject to eligibility.

Under current guidance the Council will then have 33 days to prepare their decision, this is known as a section 184 decision.

What do I do if the Council have decided not to help me?

How will the Council decide if they can help me?

There are certain criteria which the Council must consider when looking at whether you are owed a homelessness duty. You must be eligible for assistance (as a UK of EEA national), have a local connection, be in priority need (as a result of a vulnerability whether it be pregnancy, old age, having a dependent child or suffering from e mental or physical health condition) and not have made yourself intentionally homeless.

Will I have accommodation whilst the Council are looking into my matter?

The Council have a duty in law to provide temporary accommodation for anyone applying for assistance under section 184 provided that a very low threshold is met. If the Council have refused a duty then they have a discretion to provide temporary accommodation whilst any review is on-going. Swain & Co can assist you with requests for temporary accommodation.

If the result of the section 184 decision is that the Council is unable to provide you with assistance, you should contact Swain & Co immediately. Once a decision has been made you have 21 days in which to request a review of that decision, this is called a section 202 review. We can provide assistance with drafting representations setting out why the decision is incorrect.

Postcode Publications PLANS EMERGE FOR LONG AWAITED MARKET PARADE REDEVELOPMENT

The Hampshire & Regional Property Group has lodged an outline planning application for re-development of the north-eastern quadrant of Market Parade.

The 1960’s development is regarded

by Hampshire & Regional as a prime re-development site to create twentyfirst century high-quality living accommodation with basement parking and retail outlets at ground

floor level.

The property is in single ownership which makes the prospect of early development more likely following grant planning consent.

The remaining three quadrants of Market Parade present a more challenging prospect due to multiple ownerships, but Hampshire & Regional hope that their development will provide a catalyst for re-development of the area into an attractive location for residents and shoppers alike, close to the railway and bus station transport facilities.

A group of local apprentices have started a unique building project in Havant, believed to be a UK first.

Twenty-three youngsters covering a range of skills, from carpentry to site management, will be constructing a community centre at Nursery Fields, the Barratt development at Denvilles.

A special ceremony to break ground to get the project underway was attended by local politicians. The new 2,500 sq ft building will be constructed in traditional brick and block materials and be ready for completion next summer.

The apprentices are aged from 16 to 21 – and 16 year old Dexter Smith, an apprentice carpenter said: “I am really enjoying my job here at Barratt. Everyone’s really supportive and I can see that there’ll be loads of opportunities in the future. The Community Centre project is brilliant!”

The Mayor of Havant, Councillor Leah Turner, said: “This is a fabulous initiative from Barratt which not only provides a much needed community facility but engages local youngsters on a really worthwhile project. It also shows that youngsters have a viable alternative to university when embarking on a career path.”

Ward councillors Jackie Branson and Tim Pike agreed. “This kind of project does an excellent job in bringing a whole range of people together, “said Councillor Pike.

Councillor Branson added: “This area has been crying out for a Community Centre and having it built by youngsters – albeit

under supervision – is terrific.”

Havant MP Alan Mak said, “The new community centre will be a great asset for Denvilles and the wider Havant area. I’m delighted local apprentices will be at the heart of its construction, and I look forward to supporting them and the community centre as it takes shape. This is a fantastic community project bringing together the housebuilding industry, apprentices and the community.”

Ian Wallace, Managing Director at Barratt, said: “Putting it quite simply, apprentices are the life-blood of Barratt which is why we are so committed to investing in their development. Apprentices here have a brilliant future with us and, given a positive work ethic and enthusiasm, can progress up the career ladder quite quickly.”

The project was the initiative of Jon Green, Construction Director at Barratt, who said: “Often youngsters are involved in only part of a scheme. But here they will have the opportunity of seeing how a project develops from start to finish and consequently they’ll be able to take real pride in their accomplishments.”

The community project was enabled by Havant Borough Council as part of the Community Infrastructure Levee receipts from the nearby Barratt’s Nursery Fields residemtial development.

Dear Doctor: Will I ever be able to ski again?

“I had a skiing accident a few years ago and slipped a disc in my back.

Every now and again the pain will flare up and cause me a lot of pain. Is there anything I can do, and will I ever be able to ski again?”

Mr Jason Harvey, Consultant Spinal Surgeon practising at Spire Portsmouth Hospital: A slipped disc can be very painful, but most people will get better by themselves with the right pain relief and physiotherapy. In the first instance I would recommend antiinflammatory pain killers, such as ibuprofen, to settle the pain when it flares up.

You can also work on strengthening the muscles in your back and stomach, so work on your core stability. Keep an eye on the factors that trigger your pain and try to avoid them if possible.

If the symptoms don’t start to settle within a few weeks, we need to investigate further to find out exactly what is going on. GPs

5 tips to avoid back pain

and physiotherapists should look out for what we call red flags, and if they think there is anything to worry about they should refer you to a back specialist for further testing and treatment.

1. Get up and move Sitting down or working at a computer for too long may make your back pain worse. Make sure you get up and move every now and again.

Treatment would usually involve physiotherapy, pain relief, injection therapy of local anaesthetics and steroids to settle the pain. We try to avoid surgery if at all possible, and only a few people will need an operation.

The procedure involved is called a lumbar discectomy, which is a relatively small procedure under a general anaesthetic. We move the nerve out of the way and take away the part of the disc that is pressing on the nerve. That should then resolve the pain.

As for whether you can return to skiing, it depends on your symptoms and what is causing your back pain. I have had several patients both with and without surgical intervention who returned to skiing, so it’s certainly possible that you can get back to the slopes in the future.

2 Quit smoking Smoking dries out the discs – the shock absorbers – in your back, which in turn can put you at risk of sciatica.

3. Bend your knees When you’re lifting, remember to keep your back straight and bend at the knee.

4. Make time for exercise Strengthen the muscles in your back and stomach to give your back extra support.

Stronger, More Flexible, Pain-Free Readers … tips and exercises from our Award Winning Physio My name is Natalie March from Physio-logical, a chartered physiotherapist in PO9. I hope you found the last general stretching exercises useful. We have had some more lovely testimonials from our clients recently, so thank you.

Thank you very much and for all your kind understanding too.” Mrs. Smith, June 2015 Recently we have had a surge of people attending the clinic with shoulder problems the most common being “frozen shoulder”.

Today I will provide you with some more information about frozen shoulder and some self-help exercises too.

The shoulder is a ball and socket joint normally associated with a wide range of movement. It is surrounded by a soft tissue capsule which encases the joint and holds in the lubricating fluid. This capsule is usually very loose to allow freedom of movement in all directions. However, in a frozen shoulder the capsule initially becomes inflamed and then contracts. This decreases the joint volume and results in varying degrees of pain and loss of movement for the sufferer.

The symptoms were described as far back as 1872 and the term ‘frozen shoulder’ has been used for over 80 years. However, only through research over the last 20 years do we now know what it actually is.

Unfortunately, we still do not know why it happens. What is generally agreed is that frozen shoulder has broadly three phases starting with pain, followed by stiffness and then slowly resolving in a ‘thawing’ phase.

The length of each phase varies and there is considerable overlap of phases but total duration of the condition averages 18 months to 3 years. However, some can experience problems for much longer. All bad news so far then! So, how can we help you with your frozen shoulder at Physiological?

Our treatment decisions (which we will make together) depend on whether pain or stiffness is your main problem. Where does your shoulder fit in?

Pain is my main problem The aim of treatment is to decrease your pain and maintain or improve your movement. This may involve advice, gentle exercises, low level joint or soft tissue techniques and/or acupuncture. Aggressive

painful stretching at this stage can prolong your problem (and it’s not a pleasant experience!). If you are not sleeping and/or have significant pain at rest which isn’t helped by medication, you may be advised to see a specialist to consider a steroid injection. If this is the case we can point you in the right direction as we have quick access to these services. When pain is the main problem the aim is to progress you to the point where stiffness is your main problem.

Stiffness is my main problem The good news is that if your shoulder is here it is unlikely that you will go backwards. However, it doesn’t mean that you will have no pain! Pain may still be associated with certain movements and stretches but this stage allows a more active approach to your treatment. This may involve more intense, prolonged stretching, exercise and joint mobilisation with your physiotherapist and at home. Certain manual techniques have been proven to increase movement in a relatively short time period.

Summar y - If you have a frozen shoulder we can help you by: 1. Giving you an accurate diagnosis and explanation of the problem and its natural course.

2. Working with you on a course of treatment including self-management strategies whilst monitoring results.

3. Referring you to a shoulder surgeon at your request if your problem requires further investigation or intervention.

Lean forwards with support.

Pendulum This is a good exercise to start to get the shoulder moving: • Let your arm hang down • Swing your arm forwards and back, - side to side - around in circles both ways • Repeat each movement ten times, three times a day.

Rotate your arm Out (Lateral Rotation) This movement becomes very restricted with a frozen shoulder: • Rotate your arm out • To increase the movement further push with unaffected arm so hand of problem side is moving away from the mid-line • Do not let your body twist round to compensate • Repeat ten times, last one hold for thirty seconds, three times a day Shoulder Assisted Elevation Support problem arm with other hand and lift it up overhead • Do not let your back arch • Repeat ten times, last one hold for thirty seconds, three times a day.

What do you do in a Tai Chi Chuan class?

First steps: We all start a journey with the first step.

Preparation: The beginning of anything new can be daunting – wearing loose comfortable clothing, arriving in time and not needing to rush off all help towards a relaxing and enjoyable learning experience.

The following sections give a brief explanation of class content, and the elements needed to appreciate a full understanding of the art of Tai Chi Chuan.

Loosening -Tai Chi Tsao Starting with six loosening exercises increasing our body awareness, releasing tension and co-ordinating movements designed for balancing our torso and limbs.

These exercises become the core of our later understanding of unity.

Breathing and Energy - Qigong • To harness the breath in stillness and movement.

• Techniques to open and release the breath.

• Postures to focus the movement of breath and energy of the body.

Form work - An important aspect of practice, most often seen and therefore well known.

Practising sequences to aid the imagination focus the mind and free the spirit.

Builds short and long term memory, basic numerical function, balance, strength and stamina.

Partner Work - TuiShou - An essential element without such it would be difficult to fully appreciate the awareness of ourselves relative to others. It gives us the tools to really feel and see our tension and learn to release it!

SUPPORT FOR MEN’S SHED The thriving Waterlooville Men’s Shed needed a new heating system for the coming winter, and asked Postcode Publications for financial help.

The Shed sourced many of the materials they needed from local supporters, but needed a large sum of money to buy a boiler, hire gas

engineers and thereby enable members to install a new system which will enable the Shed to operate in comfort over the winter months.

Postcode Publications were pleased to provide the finance needed to enable the Shed to buy the materials they needed and install a central heating boiler and radiator system.

Warblington School realising potential : unlocking success

GCSE Examination Success Summer 2015 The school maintained its 5A*-C including English and Maths standard (50%). The new measure of A*-C in both English and Maths was 59%. Both English and Maths are strengths of the school with outcomes in English 73% A*-C and 67% A*-C in Maths.

Levels of progress were equally impressive with 70% of students making nationally expected progress in English and 63% making nationally expected progress in Maths.

We are very proud of our Humanities results where 86% of students gained an A*-C in History and 55% in Geography. Other notable results include ICT where 73% gained an A*-C.

Open Evening News On a Friday evening in September twenty-one students from Warblington School travelled to the New Forest to undertake their Assessed Expedition for their Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award. They were excited, enthusiastic and eager.

Rucksacks were packed with the equipment and supplies they would need for the weekend, not forgetting their ‘emergency’ rations of chocolate bars!

The weather was kind, perfect for enjoying all the sights and sounds of the Forest, although the nights were chilly.

On Saturday, four groups of students followed their pre-planned routes and undertook their aim work; taking photos of the environment and of sculptures they had made from the natural materials of the forest.

They were met at points along the way by

their Assessors who checked their navigation skills and their competency with Campcraft.

They cooked their meals on trangia stoves.

Bacon rolls were the most popular for breakfast. For dinner one group chose to cook Chorizo and Mash! In the evening marshmallows were cooked on the campfire by the light of a nearly full moon.

On Sunday, the groups completed their second routes and six or so hours later arrived at their final destination; tired, but happy and extremely proud of their achievements.

Every student passed their Expedition, with the Assessors commenting “they were all fantastic”.

Once again Warblington School offered a peek into secondary school life. This was a great opportunity for Year 5 and 6 pupils to make friends and see what their next school could be like. As a small, caring school Warblington has the ability to know every student as an individual.

Around the school visitors were able to see WWII memorabilia and view exciting case studies in Geography. They could solve number problems in Maths and see examples of sewing skills,

stenciling in Textiles and masterpieces in Art. Visitors could taste fantastic French or Spanish food in Modern Foreign Languages and sample an American style diner with luscious burgers and milkshakes in Food Technology. There were fast paced car games, lots of robots and cool graphics in IT. There was also the opportunity to see our fantastic brand new Sports Hall, Gym, Dance Studio and Astro Pitch in action.

Alan Mak MP Report on my work locally and in Westminster

Backing local schools is a key priority as your local MP. I‘ve already visited every secondary school and launched the Havant Education Leaders Forum (HELF) to bring together all our secondary headteachers to share ideas and continue raising standards.

As we get stuck into a new academic year, I’ve written to all local schools to set out ways I can help them, and kicked off a tour of local primary schools, starting with Fairfield Infants in Havant and Springwood Infant and Junior schools in Stakes. I’ve invited every local school to visit Parliament where I’ve joined together with other MPs to lobby the Prime Minister for more school funding for our area. I want to encourage our children to show their creativity so I’ve launched a competition to design my official Christmas card. Further details are on my website.

Autumn also means its Emsworth Food Fortnight, and I enjoyed meeting local stallholders and visitors alike, who all shared my view that this year’s event was outstanding. I’ve continued visiting local employers from Langstone-based Lockheed

Martin which supports our Royal Navy to Barclays on Hayling Island. I also enjoyed visiting Portsmouth’s Navy Base to meet officers, sailors and support staff, giving me an excellent insight into their work as I continue my year’s “work experience” with the Royal Navy.

Our community groups continue to do great work. I visited Leigh Park Working Men’s Club on a busy Sunday afternoon and will be applying to join myself having really enjoyed meeting members.

The Southern Domestic Abuse Service, a charity based in Havant that helps women who have suffered from domestic violence, recently secured £500,000 from the National Lottery to expand their services, and I was very moved by my visit to their local refuge.

I attended the launch of the new Hayling lifeboat and I know it will do valuable work helping those in trouble at sea.

I convened a successful meeting with three NHS bodies to agree a new roadmap to move Emsworth surgery to a new site.

There is much work to do and it will all take time, but we are now moving forward.

Finally, I’ve launched a series of informal drop-in surgeries for residents to chat to me about local and national issues. The next events take place on 23 October, 27 November, 12 December and 15 January.

No advance booking is required and residents are welcome at any event across the whole constituency. More details are on my website.

At Westminster, I’ve been appointed to the Finance Bill Committee. This is a

prestigious Committee working with Treasury Ministers to examine and pass the Summer Budget on a line-by-line basis. I’m also on the committee scrutinising English Votes for English laws, which I think are a welcome step.

Food and Wine The rise of English fizz. Can it last?

Jonathan Rogers of The Solent Wine Experience looks at English sparkling wines

The Sparkling wines we are making here in the UK seems to go from strength to strength. Its popularity is on the increase, not to mention the awards the various producers are winning. Last year sales doubled that of 2010 to £6million with a record 2014 harvest, and this is set to continue. But can this rapid growth survive? Two years ago I attended a seminar at the International Wine Trade Fair in London and listened to one key producer who answered that very same question, a question which has been in my mind for sometime.

Frazer Thompson, CEO of Chapel Down, warned that the industry cannot sustain this growth and that the price point of English fizz needs to be addressed. I agree totally with what he says. Some English fizz are priced at the £25-£30 price point which is more than some Champagnes, but these English producers do not have the big budgets that the Champagne houses do. Frazer Thompson also mentioned that consolidation of some vineyards was on the horizon in order to just survive. We have already seen Three Choirs Vineyard purchase Wickham Vineyard, a move I see as eliminating some of the competition. Three Choirs have spent close to a £1million on turning Wickham Vineyard into a wedding venue, on top of the £1.2 million they spent on purchasing the site, stopping all wine production completely.

Investment has been raised to research and develop an identity for English fizz.

Some industry professionals are calling for a ‘name’ that defines English fizz. At present it is simply called English Sparkling Wine, a name I personally cannot see a problem with, but there is too much comparison going on with Champagne. We all know that Champagne is called Champagne because it is produced in that region. In England we do not have the same regional differences they have in France. Bordeaux, Burgundy etc.

England is a region as a whole and most producers do name the county from which the grapes come from on their labels.

However most producers also purchase grapes from all over the country and unless 85% of the grapes come from one county then they cannot label it as wine from Hampshire or wine from Kent etc. Some other leading industry figures have also expressed a wish for the EU to allow us to call our fizz Champagne. Gordon Ramsay is one of them. He recently started selling some English fizz in his new restaurant in Bordeaux, a move that will do only wonders for our wines, but at the same time he said that maybe the French should start to allow us to call our sparkling wine

Champagne. I ask the question why? We do not need to copy or compete with Champagne. The Champagne houses have been doing this for hundreds of years and we need to build our own identity for our quality wines as they did. The quicker we stop comparing our sparkling wine to Champagne, the quicker we will grow. To be honest, we should be more concerned over the rise of Prosecco.

Food Fiend Experience Recipe column - by Kathy Fitchett

A Healthy Tasty Snack Muesli/Protein Bars

This bar is packed full of goodness and the contents can be adjusted to include only those dried fruits and nuts you and your family enjoy. Whether you make it for the school lunch box or as a snack for work or play I am sure this will be a firm favourite.

You can substitute honey instead of maple syrup and if you really want to make a snack which has added health benefits use Manuka honey. This can be made as a gluten free (GF) version too using GF oats. Have fun making this with the children too!

Ingredients 100 g dates, chopped 3 apples 1 cup water 50 ml maple syrup 50 ml agave nectar 150 g rolled oats 3 tablespoons wheat germ 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed/ linseed or combination 75 g nuts e.g. hazel nuts, almonds, Brazil, pecans 50 g coconut flakes 75 g chopped apricots 60 g cranberries 50 g pumpkin/ sunflower seeds/chia seeds or mixture Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 190 °C (375 °F).

2. Line the bottom of a baking sheet ( 19 cm x 27 cm) with parchment paper.

3. In a saucepan, combine the chopped dates, peeled and chopped apples, water, agave nectar and maple syrup.

Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Puree using a food processor.

4. In a bowl, combine all the dry ingredients.

5. Add the date mixture and mix well to coat all the ingredients.

6. Spread over the sheet and flatten with a spatula.

7. Bake for about 15-20 minutes or until it turns golden.

8. Place in freezer for 30 minutes and then cut to desired size.

GIGGLES REPORTS Hello, it’s me Giggles, the out and abouter reporter for the Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre. I thought you would like to read this letter that has been sent to me from two little black cats that were lucky enough to find a special home with the help of my lovely staff.

“Dear Giggles, It’s us, Merlin and Ember. We lived with you at the CRRC after our owner moved away. The lovely ladies at the CRRC looked after us really well but we longed to go outside like you. If you remember, some

people came up to see us that especially wanted black cats and the lady had seen our picture on something called the internet and thought us to be handsome and beautiful!! I fluffed up my fur, purred and rolled about and showed off my skills with a ping pong ball. Ember left it all to me as she had just had her flea treatment and was in a strop. Luckily our new family realised her problem and gave her a chance. She is very well behaved and so happy now. We get lots of cuddles and love every day and have our own brushes and little beds, although we much prefer the sofas!! Thanks Giggles for being there for us when we were so sad.

We now have the best home ever. So that's our news! You know what they say….BLACK CATS REALLY ARE LUCKY. With Love and cuddles, Merlin and Ember XXXX” There are so many more cats here that are waiting for their forever home so please, if you are interested in adopting a

KF141-05 Please say hello to our beautiful lady. She was originally rehomed from the Centre as a kitten back in 2005 (hence the kitten number for a name) but sadly had to be returned to us in May of this year due to her owner having a change in living circumstances which meant that KF141-05 ended up living with a dog that attacked cats! She is now 9 years old and desperately seeking her forever home. She is such a

gorgeous girl and loves nothing more than a cuddle and a lap to sit on. She does have specific dietary needs but please don’t let this put you off of enquiring about our special girl as she really does deserve a loving home and a new owner that she can cuddle up to. Havant Park Pavillion Proposal

A design idea for development of a Pavillion Café in Havant Park to replace the public convenience block, would provide a stopping off destination for light meals and drinks whilst maintaining public toilet facilities.

Autumn Term 2015 has been long awaited at Park Community School. We have spent over seven years getting ready to build and then constructing our new school.

We have a wonderful new theatre, lecture theatre, restaurant and activities on our playing field. Our new restaurant serves the best school meals prepared by our qualified chefs and their catering team, all at affordable prices. We have invested heavily in touch screen technology, computers, laptops, iPads and software to allow students to use a wide range of electronic devices.

As well as learning on the school site we now have an industrial unit, a school small holding and are developing a

The children had a fantastic time exploring all the new facilities and meeting the teaching staff at Park. The children were very excited and engaged during their visits and it was rounded off by their parents coming in on Thursday evening to have their own visit.

Headteacher Christopher Anders talked to the parents about the changes in education, how it will affect their child’s schooling and the important decisions they will be facing in October, when deciding which school to choose for their child. Staff and current students were on hand to show them around and talk about what life is like at Park.

Springwood Park Pre-School and Nursery Springwood Park Pre-School and Nursery has opened in new dedicated facilities at the front of Park Community School. The pre-school and nursery, jointly established

by Services for Young Children and the school, provide a safe, exciting, fun and challenging environment for nursery children aged 0-2 years and pre-school children aged 2-5 years. The environment is full of colour, new interesting toys and qualified staff who have years of experience working in childcare.

The nursery building holds a sensory room for babies to explore, a sleep room, and a free flow garden, where children are able to take toys outside if they wish.

Springwood Park works closely with Park Community School using the school’s excellent amenities, including PE sessions in the sports hall and cooked school meals in the fantastic school restaurant

Greenpower

We became involved in the Greenpower project over fifteen years ago, a national project to get school students building and racing electric go-karts. Our first car was sponsored by Havant Rotary club.

When Simon Waters, our eLearning Coordinator, took over the project he found that the rules had changed. The bottom of the car had to be much closer to the ground, lowering the centre of gravity and reducing the risk of rolling.

After one season trying to comply with the existing 12 year old car, Park School decided on a new Greenpower official kitcar to make sure we were within the rules.

We only had a few weeks to build the car, test it and go to the first race at Dunsfold, the Top Gear race track. Due to some technical problems (a crash!) we didn’t make it! Instead we went to the final meeting of the season at Castle Combe.

After a 5.00am start we arrived at Castle Combe and set up base camp ready for scrutineering and the car’s first ever ‘MOT’.

The chief scrutineer passed us with flying colours saying ours was one of the best

Would we manage the 90 minutes endurance of race one? To our joy the car kept going for another six laps and lasted 90 minutes. Amazing! We placed 29th out of 42 racers. Well above our expectations.

With a faster than average speed in the second race, we were placed 30th and covering 27 miles.

Flavours of Autumn

Park Community Theatre Events A great evening was enjoyed by a capacity audience at the Lee Nelson ‘Suited and Booted’ show in our state of the art theatre. The event was made possible through a new partnership between The Spring Arts Centre in Havant and the school. The atmosphere was fantastic and a great start to the theatre’s use for public events. With 280 seats it makes a perfect venue for all kinds of performers.

Susan Parish, Business and Community Manager commented “the highlight for me was how Lee built up an instant rapport with the audience, and being at a secondary school, he kept his act family orientated, creating an age auction between an elderly gentleman and a teenager, which had everyone roaring with laughter. Everyone left with a smile on their faces”.

Our next performance, again in partnership with The Spring, is for younger audiences. It is ‘The Snow Dragon’, ideal for 5-12 year olds, on Saturday 14th November at 2.30pm, tickets are just £5.

In December ‘Oliver!’ performed by the students of Park Community School, hits town. Rehearsals for the show have begun in earnest, with a range of students from Years 7 to 11 involved, and we are confident that this will be Park’s best show yet.

It’s getting colder, the rain becomes a constant presence, the wind begins to howl and it’s time for Mother Nature to prepare for hibernation. For my catering team at Park Community School it’s that time again, when hearty food is the order of the day, warming cold hands and keeping children positive and fuelled for the day. Here’s my recipe for a winter warmer: Warming Carrot and Curry Plant Soup Ingredients 2 tbsp vegetable oil 50g butter 2 white onions, chopped 2 cloves of garlic chopped 2 tsp ground coriander 800g carrots, peeled and chopped 1.2litre vegetable stock 1 small bunch of fresh coriander 1 tsp cumin seeds 1 red chilli 1 large sprig curry Leaves Method 1.Warm a large heavy based pan on the stove, add the vegetable oil and butter and allow the butter to foam and slightly colour.

2.Add the chopped white onion and garlic and allow to cook gently, until soft.

3.Increase the heat adding curry leaves, carrots and chilli, allow to cook and try to colour the carrots, they need to colour but not burn (This will take about 10 minutes) 4.Add the ground coriander and cumin seeds and allow to cook for 5 minutes.

5.Add the stock and allow to simmer gently until the carrots are very soft.

6.Add the small bunch of fresh coriander and blend until smooth and its ready to serve.

What’s on ROTARY TO HOST “GET TO KNOW YOU” INVITATION BREAKFAST Members of the Havant Rotary Club are holding at their second “Get to Know You” breakfast for potential new members living or working in the club’s catchment area of Havant, Hayling Island, Emsworth and Rowlands Castle. The breakfast is to be held at the Brookfield Hotel, Emsworth, on Thursday 5 November from 7.30-8.30am.

There is no charge and no obligation to join.

This follows the successful meeting in November last year which culminated in seven new faces joining the ranks and the invitation is open to men and women of all ages who have a business, professional or community service background and are interested in utilising their skills and experience in helping others whilst increasing their own social network and having fun.

The club calendar includes the support of many good causes both locally and internationally; the running of competitions and events for the young and elderly; vocational visits, country walks, sports competitions, weekends away and much more. Just two examples of our work in the community are our Santa sleigh runs adding excitement for hundreds of children at Christmas as well as raising valuable funds and on the world stage, the sponsorship of Shelter Boxes which contain a tent and a whole range of life saving supplies to people in disaster and humanitarian crisis areas.

Havant is one of 1,810 clubs in Britain and Ireland with a total of 51,000 members.

Hayling Model Railway Exhibition The volunteers of the Hayling Seaside Railway will be holding their bi-annual Model Railway Exhibition, over the weekend of the 7th and 8th November between 10am and 4.30pm at the Hayling Island Community Centre, Station Rd, Hayling Island, PO11 0HB. Featuring up to 25 exhibitors and displays, including scale model railway layouts of various scales and gauges, plus trade and railway society stands.

A vintage bus link operated by the Corporation of Portsmouth Preserved Transport Depot, will connect the show hall in West Town with the H.S.R’s Eastoke Corner terminus. where a regular ‘Hayling Seaside STEAM passenger train service will run on the one mile narrow gauge light railway, beside Hayling Bay to Beachlands. The Seaside Railway’s first Model Railway shows were held in the line’s workshops at Beachlands, but their popularity soon outgrew their cosy confines. The 2013 ‘Hayling Billy 50’ project, marking the 50th anniversary of the closure of the Havant to Hayling Island branch line, provided the impetus to relocate the event to larger premises away from the railway itself. A move rewarded with over a thousand visitors over two days.

With even more hall space booked for this year’s event, we are looking forward to bringing even more people to Hayling this time around. With visitors to Eastoke Corner, also able to view progress on the

NUMBER 60 TO THE SOMME, a play with music celebrating the ‘only and best’ B-Type London bus by Greg Mosse and Carol Godsmark, has its World Premiere in Chichester on 3 – 7 November, 2015 at the Riverside Theatre, Chichester College, Chichester, West Sussex.

Based on a storyline from Carol Godsmark’s novel, Ghost Army, it tells the story of Jim Swift, a London double decker bus driver who, against his family’s wishes, enlists to drive his bus to the Front, one of the many leaving London streets in their red livery to Front Line battles for the First World War effort.

The Great War was an extraordinary mobilisation of men, women, animals and machines. The B-Type bus – open-topped, steel-wheeled, solid, dependable – was despatched in huge numbers to serve in Belgium and France. The vehicles became troop transports, mobile hospitals, pigeon lofts – and were put to any and every

perilous use on the rough roads and tracks.

This unknown story of World War One is brought to vivid life by an ensemble company directed by Roger Redfarn.

NUMBER 60 TO THE SOMME, a Chichester Community Theatre Production, is the story of one such bus and its driver Jim Swift, played

by Brighton-based actor Ben Cassan – and the tragedies and astonishing fortitude of this terrible conflict.

Characters include Jim Swift’s father Alf, his brother Billy, Jim’s fiancée Vera Thwaites, Vesta Tilly, Marie Lloyd, both major music hall artistes, Jim’s captain, Captain Jackson, a bus inspector and an historian.

Roger Redfarn’s professional career includes 22 London productions including Dad’s Army with the original cast, Barry Manilow’s world premiere of Copacabana and What a Performance with David Suchet plus Chichester Festival Theatre’s Underneath the Arches and Song of Singapore. Roger was also responsible for

national tours as well as productions in America, Australia, Canada, the Far East and Europe. Roger was the Artistic Director of the Theatre Royal Plymouth for ten years, Cameron Macintosh commenting 'There is no other theatre in the country that has the range of high quality theatre across its stages than this city enjoys.’ Roger is a Winston Churchill Fellow.

Greg Mosse is a creative writing teacher and author. Carol Godsmark is a journalist and author. Both live in Chichester and will be in conversation with Roger re the plays’ research and writing on November 4 at 6.30 pm prior to the performance.

Rowlands Castle Painting Society

The new 2015/2016 year for the Society began in October and is an ideal time for new people to join this friendly, industrious art group.

Arun & Chichester (Air) Enthusiasts Society Monday 9th November - 1900 for 1930 hrs - ‘The Blenheim – Now Flying Again’ with John (Smudge) Smith This fascinating talk describes the two restorations of the Bristol Blenheim MKIVs to flight at Duxford, some of the history and operations of the aircraft and the two accidents that befell the restored aircraft and the subsequent repair and conversion to Blenheim MKI status which flew in November 2014 and is currently on the air show circuit.

Monday 23rd November - 1900 for 1930 hrs ‘15 years, a pause and a review of my aviation career!’ by Justyn Gorman Justyn Gorman is a professional display pilot and specialises in high performance gyroscopic unlimited aerobatic displays for air shows and special events in the Extra 300.

The talk will be an interesting snapshot and review of his many different experiences in aviation to date, and perhaps an eye towards the future.

Air ACES is an aviation talk society, providing its members with regular talks, given by experts in many different fields related to the world of aviation. These talks cover subjects such as test flying, piloting iconic aircraft, RAF, aviation industry, air displays and many other related topics.

‘Petticoat Pilot’ a talk by Ann Chance, and ‘Air Shows and their Aircraft – to Music’ by Cliff Carter In the first half, Ann Chance will talk about her life as a petticoat Pilot. Having undertaken a parachute jump as ‘Wonder Woman’, Ann decided that she would rather be in an aircraft, than dropping from the sky, so she learnt to fly – at the grand old age of 54. She learnt at Biggin Hill, and after two years of intensive training, she gained her Private Pilot’s Licence in 1993. Since then she has flown many times, and will expand on the privileges that she has had.

For the second part of the evening, Cliff Carter will give an audio visual presentation, about various Airshows that he has visited and many of the aircraft that he has seen. This array of photographs will be accompanied by appropriate music, which will add to the evening’s atmosphere.

The mixture of flying, static & panoramic photographs, from film & digital cameras, will include photos from Airshows at Bristol, Dunsfold, Duxford, Eastbourne, Shoreham, Shuttleworth, and even a few from Wanaka, New Zealand.

Both presentations will be interesting, with plenty of fabulous pictures - a talk for everyone, not just those interested in aviation!

He meets saloon bar owner Diamond Lil and her girls Buttons and Bows and locals Running Bare, Goldie Nuggets and Buffalo Bill (“on account of the way ah smell”).

Some jokes hit, but most of them miss.

A group of young adults are at a party when the world is besieged by natural disasters and lots of movie parodies.

The parodies mostly fall flat on their face, with lowbrow and slapstick humour having a field day. For young teenagers this would be funny. The jokes are funny in a childish sort of way. The actors are fine. If you liked Epic Movie and Date Movie you'll certainly have this to your liking as well.

Three 'children' grow up under a very strict regime - their own father and mother.

This is a brilliant Greek film. The film can be very raw and explicit, with the actors all giving brave and fearless performances. The film is also very disturbing and dark, and stays with you for a long time after the end.

The filming style is quite bleak, being inspired by the Dogme 95 films, started by Lars von Trier in 1995. Some scenes, for example, are filmed without showing the upper part of the body. This is a very good technique for the audience to be brought into the film because it is something not usually seen in films and an interesting technique to use. By Reg Moule EARLY IN NOVEMBER • Try to finish off bulb planting soon. In fact this is a great time to be planting tulips but if your soil is heavy put some coarse grit into the planting holes.

• Mounded, fleshy leafed alpines benefit from protection against getting too wet. Cover with a small cloche.

• Plant trees, shrubs, fruiting plants and roses of all kinds. They will be able to settle themselves in before the spring.

• Sow Aquadulce Claudia broad beans and round seeded peas, like Feltham First, in sheltered spots for cropping in June.

• Christmas roses (Helleborus niger) flower better and earlier with a little protection from a cloche.

• Hellebores hate being disturbed but if you must move one this is the best time. Lift it with a good large ball of soil around the roots.

MID NOVEMBER • Check tree stakes and ties before winter winds cause damage.

• Plant Paperwhite narcissi for Christmas flowers.

• Clean the glass and insulate your greenhouse using bubble polythene.

• Pinch out the tips of autumn sown sweet peas when they are 10cm (4in) tall.

• Plant garlic by the end of this month, it enjoys a well-drained position. If in doubt plant cloves 10cm (4in) deep in mounded rows 15cm (6in) high.

• Take hardwood cuttings of soft fruit bushes and shrubs.

• Plant bare root hedging plants.

• Keep greenhouses and frames ventilated on bright days.

• Grass growth generally slows down a little this month, so only give your lawn a light mowing if the grass is dry.

• If you have not already done so, treat the lawn to a dose of autumn lawn fertiliser and aerate it. This treatment will pay dividends in the spring.

• Some herbaceous plants –e.g. Dicentra spectablis and Primula denticulata can be brought indoors for early flowers.

• If your garden is lacking colour plant some winter flowering shrubs now.

• Sow fast maturing carrots, radishes, winter hardy salad onions etc in the greenhouse for April harvest.

• Plant a container with winter flowering heathers to brighten up your patio.

• Trim over summer heathers to remove the old flower stems.

• Slugs find greenhouse conditions ideal, so they will still be very active in there.

Take some steps towards controlling them.

So, I hear you ask, apart from enhancing your reputation for eccentricity among the neighbours, what does this exercise achieve?

The answer being that vapours given off by the mothballs help to eliminate over wintering spores of that difficult to control disease peach leaf curl.

Anyone who has a plant which suffers from this problem would be happy to try just about anything that might help to get rid of it and don’t forget that it also attacks nectarines and almond trees too.

Summer is the typical time for organising Charity events, and this year CTC members have been actively cycling and raising funds for their chosen charities.

The annual 30 mile Hampshire Harbours Ride for the British Heart Foundation was held on 12th July. The ride was for all levels of cyclist from family groups with small children to regular club cyclists. The views from the top of Portsdown Hill were followed by a sweeping descent into Fareham, a ride along the seafronts to a ferry crossing at Gosport and the return along the Eastern Road to Langstone to complete the circuit.

Five members took part in the annual 380 mile Hayling Cycle Ride from Paris to Hayling - Wilf Forrow for Oxfam, Joy Riders relax in Compton Forrow (Alzheimers), Marilyn Crocker and Pat Crowley (British Lung Foundation) and Andy Henderson (Cycle Hayling), The event started at Hayling, also on 12th July, with a three day ride to Versailles via Caen and Evreux. Before the start of the actual Paris to Hayling Cycle Ride on 15th July, the CTC riders were joined by Dee Williams who had made her own way to Versailles for the ride from Paris so that she could ride in the annual Hampshire Harbours Ride for the British Heart Foundation on 12 July with Mike Skiffins. The return route from Paris was via Rouen and Le Havre.

Having crossed the channel from Le Havre to Portsmouth, the riders rode via the cycle paths to Hayling Island, riding in a group over the bridge for a reception at The Olive Leaf on the Hayling Island seafront.

Sam told me “It took 4 long days which was hard work and a tough challenge, but I made it there! I was cycling to raise money for the charity Wings for Warriors which helps support the injured veterans. I managed to raise a massive £1890. Having not ridden a bike before recently joining the CTC I couldn't have done it without the support and encouragement you all

gave me.”

The Prudential RideLondon event on 1st August also attracted several local riders including Pat Crowley - fully recovered from the Paris to Hayling Ride, whilst Andy Henderson helped as a volunteer with one of the CTC's Dr. Bike stands on the Saturday, and acted as Marshall for part of the route on the Sunday.

Eight Sailors named as the first athletes on the British Team Sheet for the Rio 2016 Olympics On the 9 September, the British Olympic Association announced the names of the first athletes to officially join Team GB for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

A total of eight athletes have been selected across six of the ten sailing events to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (5-21 August 2016) against a beautiful backdrop on Guanabara Bay. Between those six sailing athletes selected they have won four Olympic medals and seven World Championship golds.

Olympic medal-winning windsurfer with bronze at Beijing 2008, has been selected for the Women’s RS:FX windsurfer event, for the third Olympic Games in a row.

2012 Olympian Alison Young returns in the W0men’s Laser Radial event, whilst current Laser World Champion Nick Thompson earns his first Olympic appearance to round off the initial sailing selections for Rio. Stephen Park, Team GB Sailing Team Leader and RYA Olympic Manager said: “The road to Rio 2016 has just got one step closer for these eight athletes. They have displayed fantastic performances

British sailors have established a record of excellence in Olympic competition since sailing made its debut at the Paris Olympics in 1900. Team GB tops the all-time Olympic sailing medal table with 55 medals – including 26 golds.

Giles Scott’s was the first name to appear on the Rio team sheet. The 28-yearold is unbeaten in almost two years and will make his Olympic début in the Finn class that has been dominated by five time gold medallist Sir Ben Ainslie for more than a decade. Scott (pictured below) said on hearing of his selection “I have been trying to get to the Games for a long time. I suppose it’s something that always seemed miles out of reach and a bit of a dream. To now be selected to Team GB is a huge honour and to be going is a lifelong ambition. But clearly I want more from it than just to say I went. I now have 11 months to focus in on the one regatta and hopefully that will enable me to be in a better and stronger position in eleven months’ time.”

London 2012 silver medallists Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark are paired together again in the 470 Women’s class and Luke Patience, who also won silver three years ago, will team up with two-time World Champion Elliot Willis in the 470 Men’s event. Bryony Shaw, Britain’s first female

during our qualification period so far – most notably Giles Scott who has dominated in his class for the past two years. It’s particularly pleasing to see Giles, Nick Thompson and Elliot Willis finally earning their Olympic call-ups after making such strong contributions to the British Sailing Team’s medal winning efforts over the years. They and all the other sailors named so far have proven they have what it takes to win medals for the United Kingdom at the highest level. Their selections will allow them good time to focus on preparing for the challenging sailing venue that Rio undoubtedly is.”

This leaves selections still to be made for the remaining four classes – 49er Skiff men, 49er FX Skiff women, Nacra 17 Multihull mixed and the RS: X Windsurfer men. Selections for these events must be made by June 2016. It is to be hoped that the selections for these classes are made soon so that they too have enough time to prepare properly for Rio. The 2016 Paralympics will follow in Rio from 7-18 September. In sailing, racing will be in the 2.4mR doubles class, the Sonar trios and the Skud 18 mixed doubles for people with severe disabilities. No announcements have been made on selections for these events.

Hayling St. Andrews Football Club Hayling St. Andrews football club has got off to a flying start this season! Nicola Terry the Clubs Communications Manager told me “The U12's and U13s teams have played fantastically as a whole and both have notched up wins in their respective divisions. We now have 11 teams playing in the leagues this year from U8's right up to U13's. The club continues to grow and goes from strength to strength.”

I asked Nicola whether all the age groups are prospering. She said “Yes they are. It's not just the older children where we have seen numbers rising; we now have over 20 in our 'minis' club too. Their ages range from School Reception Year to School Year 2. The children love the ethos of the club, which has a major focus on fun and ensures that every child gets to play a

match.” I asked Nicola who decides when the ‘minis’ beginners start to play in the teams? She replied “The children decide when they are ready. If and when they want to, regardless of ability, they choose when they want to play in a team. Only then do we put them in.”

Havant Hockey Club’s men’s 1st X1 had a busy pre-season prior to commencing their South Premier Division 1 season on 3 October.

Notable in the pre-season was the match against Fareham Hockey Club of the National League Conference West, which Havant won 3 – 1. Havant have also been in action in the English Hockey Cup, beating National League Conference East side, Oxted 6 – 3 at Havant College on 27 September.

First up on the 3rd October was Old Cranleighans - the team that finished one place and 12 points behind third placed Havant at the end of the 2014/15 season. This encounter with Old Cranleighans was never going to be easy game. At the final whistle however it was a comfortable 6 – 2 win for Havant. Indian International Sandeep Singh pitched in with four goals all from penalty corners. Singh also scored four in Havant’s 8 – 2 win at Staines on 10 October.

Havant’s opponents at Havant College on Saturday 17 October, Banbury, were promoted as Champions of South Premier Division 2 at the end of last season.

On the player front 1st team coach Ady Adams told me immediately after the final match of the 2014/15 season that he was generally happy with the squad he had and speaking of the 2015/16 season he said “I will continue bringing young players through on the lines of putting a team together with a mixture of young and experienced players.” Accordingly he has retained the services of international players Sandeep Singh (India) and Maciej Janiszewski (Poland) for the 2015/16

season. They are back at the Club and both scored in the English Hockey Cup 1st round match with Oxted. Singh scored with a signature short corner drag-flick, while Janiszewski scored an opening hattrick. With Adams having the services of these two experienced international players to compliment the existing talented young and experienced players, the Club has made a strong start to their South Premier Division 1 campaign.

Tim Randall’s Sports Round-up Football England In the September round of qualifying games for the 2016 European Cup, England maintained their 100% record by beating San Marino and Switzerland. In the game against the useful Swiss team at Wembley Stadium, Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur was introduced as a substitute early in the second half. That allowed Wayne Rooney to play alongside Raheem Sterling and the whole team looked more comfortable and purposeful. Moving the ball quicker soon made chances and Rooney got the goal to take the England all-time scoring record from Bobby Charlton. Harry Kane added England’s second for and demonstrated his international credentials. Having qualified for the finals, experimental teams were fielded in the final two games against Estonia and Lithuania in October, with Barkley and Vardy in particular showing their international potential.

Pompey Having watched Pompey in pre-season at Westleigh Park against Division 1 Coventry City, I was immediately impressed with Conor Chaplin. He showed his prowess in the opposition penalty the box and his ability to put the ball in the net. With Matt Tubbs as well Pompey have two instinctive goal scorers who can change games.

Overall Pompey are looking strong and purposeful with goals coming from many different players. All surely making Pompey worthy of a bet for promotion. Perhaps as Division 2 Champions.

Havant & Waterlooville FC The Vanarama National League South is taking shape. After twelve games and languishing in the bottom half with just three wins Hawks, out of character, have been shipping goals. The contenders at the top already begin to look a little distant. The Westleigh Park team with several new signings and injuries to key players, are struggling to find consistency in their lineup. See in this edition of Postcode, reporter Simon Payne’s fuller analysis of Hawk’s season to date.

Havant Rugby Club Havant RC has had mixed fortunes at the start of its London 1 South Division campaign. The team’s home form with one exception has been excellent. Games at Hooks Lane against Dover in August and Twickenham in September and Chobham in October were won in some style. On the road however, games against both newly

promoted Medway and Brighton have been a different story. Both lost and lost badly.

The stark inconsistencies between home and away performances are a cause for concern. They need to be addressed quickly or the Club’s hopes and aspirations for the season may be undermined.

Golf Top young Waterlooville golfer, Scott Gregory aged 21, an England amateur international, based at Corhampton Golf Club, was selected to play in the England team in the 2015 Spirit International Amateur Championship. Held in the USA at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas, from 9-15 October, the Championship features the world's best amateur men and amateur women golfers from 20 countries and six continents. They represent their country in team and individual competitions for team and individual gold, silver and bronze medals. Established in 2001, the Spirit International Amateur Championship is a biennial event. It alternates tournament years with the World Amateur Team Championships. England has won the International Amateur Championship Team Gold medal twice, back-to-back in 2005 and 2007.

Cricket Talented 11 year old Hampshire County Cricket Club’s Poppy-Jay Watkins (see report in Postcode Publications July August 2015) has this month been selected for the U 13 Development Group. Torrential rain over southern England caused all of the final round of matches in the Southern Electric Premier Division scheduled to be played on Saturday, 29 August to be abandoned. But South Wilts CC had already claimed the title a week earlier. Havant CC finished as runners-up to South Wilts for the second year running.

Bashley (Rydal) CC finished third.

The big bash for the leagues T 20 Trophy saw the top two clubs locking horns in the final. South Wilts emerged triumphant to

complete the Southern Electric Cricket clean-sweep.

Havant CC were left to reflect on another season of good cricket, finishing runners-up to South Wilts CC in the Premier Division for the second year running and going one better than last season in the T 20 Trophy, where in 2014 they were narrowly beaten by Lymington CC in the semi-finals. The close season is an opportunity to contemplate on how the Club’s men’s 1st X1 might bridge the gap with their South Wilts CC rivals at the top of the Southern Electric Cricket pyramid.

CRAFT BEERS – Enjoy your local brews Havant tried anything quite as good! recently recruited Ben Sharman who will assist them in the brewing. Mike started as a home brewer and purchased his first one barrel plant in 2009 which he operated from his garage. The beers went well and he won Hampshire Beer of the Year in his first year of commercial production.

Mike brews a number of speciality beers all with delightful punning titles. When I visited he was offering “Havant Converted” The latest edition of Camra’s Good Beer a multi-grain beer brewed to celebrate the Guide 2016 shows that there are now over 2015 Rugby World Cup. Mild and bitter, mild and bottled brown ale and other combinations of half pints could be ordered and combined in a pint glass. The rise of lager drinking from the mid 1970’s polarised pub drinkers between those who wanted pure real ales and those who drank lager.

Milds, brown ales and beer mixtures seem to die out. This offering from Havant is a dark, smooth sweet tasting beer. It reminded me of a porter in that it is dark but not unduly bitter or burnt tasting like an Irish stout.

Havant Started 4% Best Bitter It pours with a big creamy head and is a lovely golden orange

colour. Quite a citrus taste due to the use of American as well as British hops. I thought this was rather like a lower alcohol India Pale Ale (IPA). It is a good session beer and would go well with spicy foods.

Havant Decided 3.8% Pale Ale A pale golden coloured beer with a floral bouquet. Another good session beer or one that would go well with most dishes.

Havant Herd 4.2% Sweet Stout Sweet or Milk stouts were once very popular drinks, especially amongst women and older people. This beer has lactose (milk sugar) added which gives it a sweet but not cloying taste. It has a velvety consistency.

We started with Chom Chom Chat Chicken, Fish Pakora, King Prawn Butterfly and Spicy Nutty Duck – all were tasty and set the scene for the Main Courses.

Garlic Chilli Chicken, Garlic Chicken Tikka, Red Chilli Special Sizzling and Lamb Korai plus side dishes arrived – wow a truly colourful sight. All the food was well cooked, full of spices and great taste – a Banquet indeed!

We all decided that this was a great way of sampling different dishes from Red Chilli’s very extensive menu and I know that Garlic Chicken Tikka and Red Chilli Special will be ordered the next time we visit this modern contemporary restaurant.

HAYLING WALK RAISES MONEY FOR TYPE 1 DIABETIES

On Sunday 27 September over 100 walkers turned out to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's One Walk.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition which cannot be prevented or cured, people need to inject or use a pump to ensure they receive insulin 24 hours a day, they must also test their blood glucose levels many times a day and night to ensure they stay well. A simple cold or tummy upset could mean a hospital stay and even things like the weather, the food they eat, stress and excitement can affect levels. Despite this Morgan and Emma live life to the full enjoying the same activities as their peers.

The Walk was organised by Mark and

Faye Wheller on Hayling Island and helped

by Helen Bailey. Morgan Wheller and Emma Bailey both have type 1 diabetes and the walk helps raise funds into finding a cure and also keeping them well.

As well as the walk there were cakes, Denmead Brass Training Band, a Scottish Piper, glitter tattoos, face painting, raffles, classic cars a dog show and a pizza van.

It was a glorious day and was also attended by the Mayor of Havant Leah Turner with her consort, and Alan Mak MP for Havant who also donated a raffle prize.

Over ÂŁ700 was raised by the stalls at the event with much more money being pledged in support of the walkers.

It is so important for children to do enough exercise and also have fun! This course helps them to gain practical skills from how to care for their bike to understanding how to cycle safely on today’s roads.

The children’s skill and confidence grew over the week and they were rewarded with certificates and badges in assembly once the course was completed. It was so great to see the children outside, enjoying themselves and being able to take part in a different activity.
