HAYLING HUGGERS

On June 7th The Huggers, Hayling's ukulele group, played at the Cats Protection League's annual fete on Hayling.

On this bright sunny day we had people singing and dancing along to popular well known tunes old and newer. The collection bucket netted £27 which was donated to Naomi House/Jack's Place Hospice.

Women in Construction Award for Barratt apprentice Katherine Colley a 17 year old Barratt Homes apprentice from Waterlooville was honoured for her achievements at the Women in Construction Awards.

Katherine was named Best Apprentice Under 25 in the prestigious awards which showcase the brightest and best female achievers in the housebuilding and wider construction industries.

Katherine is one of Barratt’s rising stars and has dreamed of being a carpenter since the age of seven. “Women may still be in the minority in the construction industry but I was up against some tough competition so to win is just amazing,’’ said Katherine.

“I’ve have such great support from so

many people already in my career from my woodworking teacher through to Barratt’s community liaison manager Anthony Dimmick who has mentored me every step of the way.’’

In addition to her work on site, Katherine is also part of the Aspire team in Southampton – a group of individuals who are dedicated to inspiring the next generation of construction staff.

Katherine visits schools and colleges where she talks about her experiences and the opportunities open to women in the construction industry.

Anthony Dimmick says that Katherine was a deserved winner of the Women in Construction Award and is the perfect ambassador for the company.

NEW STAMPING GROUND? Hayling Island Stamp Club was founded in 1952, at a time when philately was probably the most popular hobby for both adults and children. It remains an interest today, especially for the over 40s who started their collections with packets of miscellaneous stamps bought from Woolworths with precious pocket money!

Things have moved on since then, with a huge increase in the number of stamp issuing countries, radical changes in stamp design and the endless possibilities of graphic design for presenting a collection, plus the international reach of the internet.

If you are looking to return to the hobby; for new ideas; the opportunity to buy sell or swap or just the friendship of fellow collectors, the club would welcome

your membership. Meetings are held monthly and include workshops and competitions, auctions, social occasions and regular displays from the collections of club members and visiting philatelists. These cover a very wide range of topics of general interest, and often include rare and sometimes unique stamps as well as intriguing stories of delivering the post at home and abroad.

VOLUNTEERING AT LANGSTONE HARBOUR Employees from Pfizer, and volunteers from our supported volunteering project ‘The V Team’ spent a day helping the Friends

of Langstone Harbour conservation group tidy up the Oyster Beds on Hayling Island.

Luckily the weather was good, and they

achieved an amazing amount in the time.

These events really do help our local communities and we’re always keen to talk to new companies who would like to take part, or community groups who could benefit from an event like this.

Swain & Co Solicitors Q&A New pension rules – what happens if you separate?

School Councillors from Mill Rythe Junior School had an exciting day out in London when they visited the Houses of Parliament. This is Oscar’s account of the day.

Our fun day started when we boarded the minibus and set out for London. Luckily no-one was sick on the journey, on the bright side we all shared sweets! We were all excited because we were going to the Houses of Parliament, who knows we might even see David Cameron, the Prime Minister.

When we arrived we had a perfect view of the London Eye and then we went to the Southbank Centre. There was a children’s festival going so, so we started with a go at flamingo croquet and it was hard! Then we listened to 2 choirs and one musical group - they were good but our school could do better!

After we did that we went to an adventure playground and as we were walking we saw a statue of Nelson Mandela-it was huge.

Next we had a long walk and crossed Westminster Bridge with a fantastic view of Parliament and the river Thames. After we went through the security checks, we met our guide in Westminster Hall, which is over 1,000 years old.

Parliament is also called the Palace of

Westminster. After a quick video we started out on our tour.

We visited lots of places in the House of Commons and the House of Lords. When we went into the House of Lords we saw the Queen’s golden throne; every year the queen visits the Lords and makes a speech from that throne. The leather seats are luscious scarlet, but visitors must not sit down. People in the Lords are not elected; they are life peers, law lords, bishops or hereditary peers, which means they have inherited their title. Most life peers are chosen because of the work they have done, for example Lord Coe, who was an Olympic runner.

The benches in the Houses of Commons are green. This is where our Members of Parliament (MPs) meet to debate and make new laws. There are 646 MPs altogether, but there is not enough room for all of them to sit in the Commons at one time. MPs divide their time between Westminster and the area they represent. Our local MP is Alan Mak and he represents Hayling Island and Havant areas.

We had an amazing day in London and learnt so much, and we hope our school does this again.

YOUTH DINGHY SAIL TRAINING GETS BOOST FROM ROTARY For the second year in succession Havant Rotary have been pleased to support the Havant Youth Sail Training Scheme (HYSTS) by providing a range of essential equipment including on the water Walkie Talkie radios, dinghy trolley, and heavy duty hand winch.

The scheme aims to give youngsters from 8 to 18 from all backgrounds, opportunities to experience dinghy sailing under the guidance of qualified RYA instructors. The sessions are held throughout the sailing season from their base alongside the Ship Public House at Langstone with on the water sessions in the safe confines of the harbour.Youngsters taking part are evenly split between boys and girls with the majority living in the Havant, Hayling, and Emsworth area with others coming from as far afield as Petersfield and Hambledon. New rules in relation to accessing pensions came into force in April 2015. In essence, it means that you can take out all of your pension in one go rather than having to reinvest it or only take part of it.

Many people will be taking advice about what to do with their pension pot and I would strongly advocate taking independent advice.

The real concern about these new rules arises when a couple separates.

Consider this scenario: You separate; your partner reaches retirement age and can access their pension; they take their whole pension; and they spend it.

What happens now? All the money that you had for both of your retirement has now been spent.

What can you do? If you are in a situation where you are separated and your partner is approaching retirement age – act now. We can help you to reach an agreement with your former partner as to what will happen with the pension pot when it becomes available.

In an emergency, it is also possible to apply to the court for an injunction to prevent your former partner from spending the money. But you would need to act fast, as once it’s gone, if there’s no other money available it can leave you in a vulnerable position.

What do I do if I am worried that my partner is going to spend all of our pension money?

The new rules that came in to force in April 2015 allow you to access to your pension fund with fewer restrictions in place. The concern with this is that one party could access and deplete the funds available.

Separation is a difficult and adding money worries to this does not help the situation.

Where possible, it is always best to reach an agreement about your finances when you separate. The more you can agree, the more likely you are both going to stick to the agreement and the less time you have to spend arguing over things.

To reach an agreement, you can attend mediation or you can seek advice from a Solicitor. Agreements can then be drawn up into legally binding documents which will secure your position and provide you with some certainty.

There are times when an agreement cannot be reached and court proceedings may be necessary but you would need to try to negotiate first before going down that road.

If matters are more urgent and there is a concern that the pension pot is going to be accessed imminently, it is possible to apply to the court for an injunction to prevent the pension being accessed, or to prevent the money being spent. This would then provide you with some security whilst the details of how your finances are going to be divided are worked out.

The key in urgent situations is to act fast. Take advice as soon as you are worried before the pension pot is turned into a Lamborghini or round-the-world cruise.

Postcode Publications Hayling Island store’s £25,000 Community Scheme celebrated with Family Fun Day

A community support scheme by The Southern Co-operative store at Elm Grove on Hayling Island which aims to donate up to £25,000 to play Parks for Hayling celebrated a free family fun day on 16 May. Families were invited to come to the Hayling Island Community Centre between and join in the fun, which included a barbecue with local Three Harbours Beef burgers and Treagust & Sons Butcher’s sausages, bouncy castle, face painting, football competition, tombola plus tastings of local food and drink from The Southern Co-operative’s Local Flavours range.

The £25,000 community support scheme was launched by The Southern Cooperative’s Elm Grove store on Hayling Island in December 2014 to contribute to Play Parks for Hayling’s £80,000 total target. Play Parks for Hayling aims to replace the play equipment in Hayling parks with modern and safe playgrounds, with Mengham Park identified by the children of Hayling Schools as the first to be modernised. Mayor Elect Leah Turner, the driving force behind Play Parks for Hayling, said: “It is with great pleasure that I will be attending the free family fun day on 16 May as Mayor of Havant to celebrate the Play Park scheme which is being supported by The Southern Co-operative.”

The Southern Co-operative’s Retail Business Manager, Pete Raynor, said: “Our

store on Elm Grove is a long standing business on Hayling Island and we’re proud of our reputation for supporting good causes and local fund-raising. It’s great for The Southern Co-operative to be able to help to provide a play facility that local children really want and will benefit from so much. Our customers are always so supportive of our community activities so I’m sure our free family fun day will be exactly that! We look forward to seeing everyone there!”

Havant Mayor Cllr Leah Turner added; “Play Parks for Hayling is excited and grateful to be the recipient of the money from this scheme run by The Southern Cooperative. Our project is for the children of Hayling Island and it seems very apt that our local The Southern Co-operative store on Elm Grove is supporting our endeavours. We hope that Hayling residents will support the store and therefore our project to boost the funds that will be available to PP4H. ” The Southern Co-operative’s £25,000 community support scheme runs for one year and needs the support of customers at its Elm Grove store but without costing them a penny; they simply need to show their membership card for The Southern Co-operative when they shop there. All the action heroes (well, most of them) in a huge blast-out of an action film, loaded with high-octane thrills.

‘The Expendables’ is about a team of mercenaries (Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, and more) who are hired by a CIA operative to dispense of a Latin dictator and a renegade CIA agent.

That’s for the story, all the rest is basically just blowing things up with heavy artillery, as you would expect from a line up like this, and the mayhem is pretty consistent throughout. The leading stars are overshadowed quite frequently by megablasts of blown up stuff, but that’s what you mostly pay to see when you watch a film like this. Another downside to the film is that some of the much hyped stars – example Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis – are hardly in it and when they are all they have to do is one scene where they just joke around.

Overall, this film is a fun experience if it’s full-blown popcorn action you’re after.

For plot or character, look elsewhere.

The enjoyment level was on a high throughout the three-hour running time and not once did I feel let down. Oh, it is very adult and quite complex if you're new to the whole stock-broker game, but even if, like me, you know nothing about that subject you'll enjoy it nonetheless. The film received a lot of positive and negative reviews: the positive mostly giving a big thumbs-up to the direction and delving's into the life of Wall Street; the negative more concerned with the characters' actions being of a poor standard, and the amount of nudity. Both of these are true because, yes, the direction is absolutely brilliant and exhilarating with a fast-moving storyline and, yes, the character is quite vile (well, all of them are to a certain extent) and the amount of nudity borders on the gratuitous. But you could argue that this is what the leading character's world is like, seen through his eyes. The film is also very funny in places, with really laugh-out-loud standout slapstick set pieces.

Overall, 'The Wolf of Wall Street' is a fun way to spend three hours and never does it fell like a hard slog to get through. Highly recommended if you can stomach the nudity.

The Wolf of Wall Street Seeing that the running time for 'The Wolf of Wall Street' was three hours I was looking forward to a long evening of lots of entertainment - and that's certainly what happened.

'The Wolf of Wall Street' is a really crude 'cautionary tale' as stated by the leading star Leonardo DiCaprio during a radio interview. It tells the true story of a Wall Street stock-broker lured into the criminal life.

Rowlands Castle Painting Society’s Silver Cup Awards At the Rowlands Castle Painting Society’s annual Silver Cup Competition members were rewarded with a fine display of work. The competition is open to members only and submissions were entered anonymously. During the evening an American buffet was enjoyed - thanks go to Pat and Ian Hoper, Robert and Suzanne Hughes for the catering.

All present had the chance to socialise, enjoy a glass of wine and then vote for their favourite paintings. David Hughes organised the evening - no mean feat as there is a lot of preparation work involved. He had a band of helpers to take in the paintings, hang the exhibits and then count all the votes. Paddy Holmes; Patron of the society, presented winners with their trophies.

Paddy is a staunch supporter of the society and her presence was greatly appreciated.

Teen Tech

Ten year 7 students attended ‘TeenTech’ at the Portsmouth Guildhall on the 14th May 2015.

TeenTech is an event for aspiring Engineers, Scientists and Technologists of the future. Companies provided workshops for our young engineers to inspire future careers. Our students were the youngest group attending and were a force to be reckoned with, achieving a ‘best teamwork’ award for the Computer Game design challenge.

Companies attending included BAE Systems, National Grid and EDF energy.

He worked with us to organize a Primary Superstars Competition and to develop our Sportsmania Club, an afterschool sports club for year 7’s. He worked with students to overcome personal barriers to success in an inspirational and positive way. Danny commented “The school is amazing, they obviously really care about the students.”

Postcode Publications Graphic student’s showcase artwork at the QA Hospital The Art and Design department at South Downs College set 42 AS-level Graphic Communication students the live brief of designing typographic artwork for the teenage waiting room at the Queen Alexandra (QA) Hospital in Cosham.

Paul Parsons, Graphic Communication lecturer, said: ‘When we heard about the chance to work with the QA Hospital and create artwork to go in a teenage waiting room, we jumped at this amazing opportunity!’

Each student was given an inspirational quote which they had to interpret and design as a poster for patients to view. Paul Parsons stated: ‘The artwork could help inspire young people going through a tough day at the hospital.’

They commented that it was a very difficult decision to make. Paul added: ‘I’m very proud of all forty-two students who submitted artwork. We have so many talented and hardworking students studying A-level Graphic Communication at South Downs College. The course continues to grow and improve due to the fact we make

sure our students achieve high grades and create meaningful outcomes; we teach our students industry standards and we constantly look for opportunities to get our students work seen by the people of Portsmouth.’

Paul Carter, Head of Art, Design and Media at South Downs College, said: ‘This was such a fantastic opportunity for our students to work in the local community and provide some inspirational design work for the QA Hospital. As always, they were professional and responsive to the live brief and a credit to the College. The seven winning students now have their outstanding work up for lots of people to see and enjoy.’

Rob Delicate, A-level Graphic Communication student, said: ‘I was once a patient who had to wait in this room so I feel really proud my work has been chosen and will make someone’s day and keep their spirits up! All the work has really brightened up the room, it’s great to see.’

Katie Greenshields - an A-level Graphic Communication student, added: ‘It was really motivating and exciting working on a live brief because I know it has a purpose of

DYNAMO YOUTH THEATRE Dynamo members excelled in their version of Sparkleshark: a story about teenagers, friendship and the magic of storytelling. Sparkleshark was the name of the mythical dragon in the play by Philip Ridley, which was commissioned by the National Theatre.

The company, who were all on stage for 90% of the time, were directed by former members Barney Walsh and Zak Cuthbertson who undertook all of the complex choreography.

In September it’s the turn of the girls!

This year’s upper sixth are, unusually, all female and they will be showcasing their

talents in a fast-paced version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. All the cast will be playing at least two roles, many of them male, ranging from Oberon, King of the Fairies, to Bottom, the ass-headed weaver. It promises to be a magical evening for all.

BEER BOOKS FOR SUMMER READING

As a beer writer I get sent a lot of books to review. Here is a selection of some recently published beer books which may enhance your enjoyment of beer drinking and also provide some interesting summer reading.

Cheers, Cheers! Where’s the Beers by Randolph Riecke. Campus Elysium 2015 paperback £7.99 The author looks at 101 of the most popular beers (mainly lagers) from around the world and provides a brief history of the brew plus his own tasting notes. There have been several beer books along the lines of 1001 beers to try, 300 more beers to try and so on. However, these books tend to focus on hard to find beers brewed

by small breweries. The author author has chosen a very different path by focusing on the best selling beers that are drunk around the world. Many of these drinks are available in the UK. This could be a useful book to take on a cruise if you are likely to visit a number of different countries and want to know more about local beers.

This is a very stylish and beautifully illustrated book which would make a great present for any beer enthusiast.

Brew Britannia: the Strange Rebirth of British Beer by Jessica Boak & Ray Bailey.

Aurum Press 2014 paperback £12.99 This book tells the story of the history of British beer and pubs over the last 50 years.

It charts the fight back by the enthusiasts who formed the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) to ensure that cask conditioned real ale would continue to be brewed and available in British pubs. It also looks at the rise of the microbrewery from the handful that started up in the 1970’s to the present day where there are over 1200 breweries in the UK. The book covers the licenced trade and the issues that came out of the deregulation of pubs in 1989 when big breweries were forced to sell off their pubs. The story of the fall and rise of British brewing is a complex tale but one that is superbly told in this well written and highly

informative book. It should be compulsory reading for anyone who works in the licensed trade.

Beer: The Ultimate World Tour by Bill Yenne. Race Point 2014 hardback £18.99 The late, great father of beer writing, Michael Jackson was the first author to produce an encyclopaedia of world beers back in 1990. He was followed by a number of other writers with this book providing a worthy update on the fast changing global beer scene. The book covers most European countries, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and an overview of beer in Africa, Middle East and the rest of Asia. It is a thorough, well researched book giving a concise history of brewing in each country, an overview of the major breweries and some mention of a few of the more interesting small producers. It is a very useful reference book for the beer enthusiast as well as being a well-illustrated, visually attractive publication. This is another book which would be the perfect gift for a beer lover.

Rolling my sleeves up and getting stuck in

New Havant MP Alan Mak gives us the highlights from his first month in the job.

It was an honour to be elected as Havant’s local MP last month with an increased majority. David Willetts was outstanding, and I promise to work hard for all local residents. I’ve already got stuck in very quickly, dealing with residents’ queries, speaking to Ministers about local issues, supporting community events across the constituency, and setting up my new offices in Havant and Westminster.

The first weeks in Westminster have been spent speaking up about local issues with Ministers, hiring staff to support my work for local residents, and attending a well-organised induction course run by the Commons authorities. It’s had a very “first month at school” feeling except the hard work starts immediately.

Over the first month, I’ve discussed Havant’s growing economy with Chancellor George Osborne, especially our plans to regenerate Market Parade and bring new local jobs to Dunsbury Hill Farm. I caught up with London Mayor and fellow new MP Boris Johnson about upgrading Waterloo station which affects Havant’s commuters. I met Railways Minister Claire Perry about South West Trains services, and how we can improve the quality of trains on the Portsmouth-Havant-London line, for example ensuring that every train has WIFI. This was an issue raised with me again and again during the election campaign, and I am taking action.

The Parliamentary induction course itself focused on a series of tutorials, delivered by experienced MPs and House of Commons staff, covering everything from the law-making process and understanding Parliament’s procedures to dealing with constituency casework. All this practical advice was immediately useful. My first mailbag contained over a hundred pieces of

post, from congratulatory messages to residents seeking my help. I have developed a great working relationship with Havant Borough Council and Hampshire County Council, and we are working well together.

I’ve also enjoyed supported a range of local events from the Hayling Donkey Derby & Fete to Leigh Park’s 999 Community Fun Day with the emergency services.

Nationally, we have a big legislative programme to deliver over the next five years, from cutting taxes for working people and creating apprenticeships to giving voters an EU referendum. I’m proud to be part of a strong team delivering for Havant’s residents in Westminster.

It’s been an inspiring and energising start. Inspiring because we’ve got a positive manifesto to implement, which focuses on helping working people. And energising because local residents and MP colleagues have given me such tremendous encouragement as I start not just a new job, but an entirely new way of life.

Parliament is a unique and special place to work, and I am mindful that Havant’s residents have sent me here to speak up for them and their interests. During the campaign they told me their priorities were a strong economy, successful schools and vibrant communities – and that’s what I will help to deliver.

So, with the first month under my belt, I’m getting stuck in. I’ll be a hardworking local MP and a strong voice for Havant in Westminster. I’ve started as I mean to go on.

A party of 30 friends from our twin town of Gorron, Mayenne, arrived for our 17th annual exchange, over the Mayday weekend. Thanks to the Pike family, a superb English breakfast was cooked and hosted at Northney Tea rooms on their arrival after a Thursday night crossing. This was a much appreciated venue where host families were ready to meet both old friends and new twinners - for some it was a first visit to England!

It is customary to include a cultural visit in our exchanges and venues chosen were the Havant Historic Trail, The Havant Brewery and Hayling Seafront and funfair, which proved very popular with the French children of 4 and 5 years old. Included on the Saturday was a visit to Southampton to the Museum of the Sea followed by a visit to an Art Gallery and a venture into West Quay shopping centre which was the highlight of the weekend and provided much interest and discussion amongst the group.

In the evening, a total of 60 of us from both twinning groups relaxed together at a banquet at the Piranha Bar on our last night together. A fantastic meal of seafood, roast dinner and finishing with Eton mess, was a wonderful way to enjoy the company of such a special association.

On the Sunday morning we all met at The Hayling Billy where presentations were made at a farewell buffet. The Mayor of

Havant was represented by Leah Turner who presented the Mayor of Gorron, Jean Marc Allain, with a gift from Havant BC. Everyone was delighted as Wally Taylor, President of the Hayling Island Community Centre was presented with money from the town of Gorron by Jean Marc Allain, and an additional amount from the Gorron Twinning association was presented by their President, Catherine Duchemin. Both sums of money were given for bricks in support of the Community Centre extension project. Wally thanked them both and then presented them with two framed certificates.

The Twinning group then headed off to the Ferry port and we heard later that they had arrived back in France safely after a calm crossing.

Isle of Wight PGL Residential

At the beginning of May a group of Year 7 and 8 students from Warblington set out on a long weekend away for an outdoor activity residential to the Isle of Wight.

Whilst there our students stayed in

wooden chalets and participated in loads of outdoor adventure activities led by our camp leader JD. Some of the favourites were wall climbing, dragon boating, the matrix and the giant swing. Students developed new skills, overcame fears and worked as a team supporting each other, helping to get their team to the top of the Jacob’s ladder and forming a giant caterpillar to move each other to the top of the giant swing.

Each day consisted of four different activities and finished with hot chocolate in the evenings so we were always on the go!

We are incredibly proud of all our students who tried different things, worked as a team and were always eager to have a go at a new activity. We had a fantastic trip and are already looking forward to going back next year!

Lots of our students took part in the Maths Challenge run by Southampton University. We have recently heard that over 1,400 entries were received from around 40 schools and amongst the winners was Oliver Langdown in Year 8.

This is a fantastic result and is the second year we have had success in this competition.

On Monday 27th April 59 students from a French secondary school “College Don Bosco” came to meet our Year 10 French students and do some “speed dating”.

“Meeting the French students was a really good experience. We had the chance to meet new kinds of people. It was amazing. We made new friends and improved our French. Everyone was very nervous but excited at the same time. The students were very friendly and well prepared.

Before they arrived we did lots of preparation. I think the most difficult part

was to understand their questions. Their accent was very funny and quite hard to understand, but it wasn’t impossible. They had their little page with questions and another one with the answers we gave to them. At some point everyone was quite confused, but I’ll say it again, it was an amazing experience. I learnt to communicate with people from a different country and also to work in a team.

If we do this again I will prepare even more questions and I will not be so nervous. I am so thankful that I had the chance to talk with them because they are very nice people.”

Kathy attends many networking groups and recommends small businesses to get out more and connect with other enterprises.

It is nearly 3 years since Kathy started her Hayling Island business but she is never complacent about success. “I want to keep on building my business and in particular work with local colleges and major employers” she told me “I have a unique business and want to bring more people together, through the medium of cookery and fine dining, to enable them to do better business together.” Success is something that Kathy has achieved through gaining a coveted 5 star rating with Trip Advisor. She has also been nominated for various business awards.

Kathy moved to Hayling some three years ago with the idea of running a business from her home which would embrace her love of cooking.

Her core business is still the teaching of cookery through hands on experience and demonstrations to a variety of individuals and groups. Kathy has a beautiful home with a huge demonstration kitchen and dining facilities which can accommodate up to 24 covers. She specialises in Asian fusion cookery and vegetarian dishes but is able to cover all cuisines.

Hello, it’s me Giggles again, the Out and Abouter reporter for the Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre. I woke up very early this morning and could hear snuffling noises. Better go and see where it’s coming from I thought…. so I squeezed my tummy under the hedge and there in front of me were two of the most beautiful white ponies that you ever did see. They looked very pleased to see me and soon told me that their names were Holly and Daisy. They said that our boss had rescued them and was going to take care of them, like she cares for us. Great! I will be able to creep into the stables in the winter and get some warmth from them. I now want to tell you about something that has made me so very angry! Last week my staff had a phone call from Bunn Leisure in Selsey to say they had heard a noise coming from the waste skip, and when they looked inside they found a weeny kitten in a paper bag. How disgusting is that?! I wonder if whoever put him in there sleeps at nights…. I hope not. My staff are now caring for the little one and we have called him Bilbo Baggins. He has had a big shock so now he is getting lots of love and cuddles. Next time I will tell you how he's doing.

Big Tasty & Mini Fillet We are delighted to introduce our lovely pair of bunnies, Big Tasty and Mini Fillet. Big Tasty is a giant grey female and Mini Fillet is a dwarf grey male. They are both 18 months old and as much as they look like an odd couple, they really do adore each other.

They arrived with us here at the centre on the 25th March 2015 due to their owner no longer being able to look after them.

Big Tasty and Mini Fillet are a really friendly pair and like to be handled. Due to the size of Big Tasty, they would love to be re-homed to somebody that has a nice big space for them to run around in and stretch their legs. If you think you can provide these two gorgeous bunnies with their forever home then please do not hesitate to contact us.

Food and Wine The Many Faces of Sauvignon Blanc Jonathan Rogers of The Solent Wine Experience looks at the different styles of Sauvignon Blanc

Everywhere you go now you will see an abundance of wines made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape and one particular country stands out from the most; New Zealand. During the 1990’s the grape variety became very popular and the Marlborough region in particular was favoured due to the good drainage of its soil which encourages the vine to concentrate its flavours in lower yields.

These low yields are what New Zealand wine growers favour most.

Soil plays a huge part in the style of wine which is produced , and as Sauvignon Blanc is planted in many parts of the world, you will see a vast array of different styles on the market. The soils of the Marlborough region tend to be quite sandy with a mix of slate. This results in intense grassy characters with high levels of acidity and citrus characters. If we move to Europe , in particular the origin of Sauvignon Blanc, South West France we get different characters altogether. The grape is one of four varietals (Semillon, Ugni Blanc and Muscadelle being the other three) allowed for the dry white wines produced in Bordeaux, in particular the regions of Graves, Pessac Leognan and Entre Deux Mers and the Sauternes region for sweet wines. Here it is blended with Semillon and the ratio of the two grapes varies from producer to producer.

Another region where Sauvignon flourishes is the Loire Valley in the regions of Sancerre, Touraine and Pouilly Fumé. The latter refers to the village of Pouilly and the term Fumé, meaning 'smoked' refers to the style of the wine. Here the soil is a mix of flint and limestone and the locals feel that this ads a particular smoky hint to the wine.

Also the wines are aged in oak which supplies these characteristics. The wines in the Loire region are more perfumed and have more tropical fruit hints, are more

rounded and elegant. This is due to the continental climate which allows a longer ripening period of the grape which in turn gives more of a balance between the acidity and sugar levels. The Touraine region also offers excellent value for money where as the Sancerre and Pouilly Fume tend to be on the 'fine wine' side.

So depending on the style of wine you like depends on which region you choose. If you like your Sauvignon to be crisp, with high acidity and grassy tones then head to New Zealand. If you prefer a more tropical, aromatic and elegant wine then head to the Loire Valley. Either style, they are perfect summer drinking wines.

Food Fiend Experience Recipe column - by Kathy Fitchett

Chocolate and Rhubarb Tart I am delighted to share my culinary creation which uses rhubarb.You will be pleased to know that no precooking of the rhubarb with additional sugar is required. The sweetness comes from using light condensed milk. Dark chocolate and rhubarb makes for an unusual but tasty combination. Many who have tried this new recipe have been so impressed they came back for seconds! For more information about courses and group experiences available with Food Fiend Experience please go to: www.foodfiendexp.com Ingredients: For pastry: 100 gms butter 200 gms plain flour Pinch of salt 7 or 8 teaspoons cold water For filling: 65 gms dark chocolate with minimum 74% cocoa solids 200 ml of light condensed milk 2 eggs 1 table spoon lemon juice 3 stalks rhubarb ( approx. 400 gms) To do: 1. Pre heat fan oven to 180 degrees.

2. Sift flour into food processor, add pinch of salt. Cut butter into small cubes and gently stir into flour. Pulse the mixture in the food processor until it resembles bread crumbs. Do not over pulse.

3. Add 7 to 8 teaspoons of cold water to the bread crumb mixture and pulse in food processor until it forms a ball. Flatten ball of pastry into disk with palm of hand until it is 1 cm in thickness. Wrap with cling film and chill for 5 minutes in freezer.

4. Flour table top, rolling pin and hands with plain flour. Place dough ball in centre and roll out gently until pastry fills 28 cms loose bottom pastry tin.

5. Carefully place pastry dough in tin and prick with a fork. Cover with sheet of greaseproof paper and pour baking beans on top. Bake in the middle of the oven for approx. 5 minutes.

Remove baking beans and greaseproof paper and bake for a further 5 minutes. Remove from the oven to cool.

6. Place condensed milk into food mixer with one tablespoon lemon juice and mix until it thickens.

7. Separate yolk and egg white and place yolk with condensed milk and lemon juice mixture and the egg white in a separate mixing bowl.

8. Beat condensed milk mixture well.

9. Break dark chocolate into small pieces and microwave on a low temperature until completely dissolved and easily pours.

10. Add melted chocolate into condensed milk mixture and mix well.

11. Egg whites should been beaten with mixer until they become stiff and resemble meringues.

12. Fold this into the condensed milk and chocolate mixture.

13. Wash rhubarb and remove outer skin as this is stringy. Slice rhubarb diagonally (1 cm thickness) and line cooked pastry tart. Pour condensed milk and chocolate mixture over the top. Place slices of rhubarb on top to create a design in the chocolate mixture with rhubarb visible above it.

14. Bake in the oven on 160 fan for 25 minutes or until cooked through. Test with cocktail stick ensuring it comes out clean which indicates it is cooked through.

15. Enjoy with vanilla ice cream, whipped or pouring cream.

Pulse butter and flour until it resembles bread crumbs

Flatten ball of pastry into disk until 1 cm thick.

Add melted chocolate into whisked condensed milk and egg yolk mixture.

Fold stiff egg whites into mixture.

Peel skin of rhubarb and slice diagonally.

Line baked pastry shell with rhubarb and pour chocolate mixture on top.

Enjoy finished tart with whipped cream!

AUCTIONEER & ANTIQUES ENTHUSIAST HILARY BOLT on COLLECTABLE CARN POTTERY Over the last 20 years I’ve been lucky enough to turn a life-long interest in “old things” into my current day jobs – auctioneering in Emsworth Auctions and running an antiques & collectables shop, Emsworth Antiques Etc. in the town’s West Street.

Last time I told you a bit about the rising ‘collectables’ market, which includes the work of potters such as John Beusmans in his Cornwall-based Carn Pottery – tipped on TV to be “the next Troika”.

This time, I want to feature some of John’s pottery plaques, which have largely been produced in earlier years, although there are some more recent pieces turning up on internet sales sites at around £200 – see this example signed and dated 2010 on the back. (Plaque 1) While quite a number of his pots

are unsigned – some even without the pottery back-stamp – for some reason John has signed most, if not all of his plaques.

The images and subjects of these plaques are drawn from the Cornish landscape – the tin mines (Plaque 2) and coast (Plaque 3) being favourites. These vintage pieces of pottery will generally cost you around £100 - £200 depending on the size and popularity of the motif, while some of the larger and rarer pieces change hands closer to £500.

Waterlooville200 2015 marks the 200th anniversary of the battle of Waterloo and celebrations have been planned around the country to mark this milestone in British history which ended 20 years of conflict. Waterlooville has a special reason for commemorating this event, not only to celebrate the battle but to acknowledge the beginnings of the town as we know it today.

After the Enclosure Act of 1810, parcels of land were sold off and one of these was bought by Charles Matthews. At this time there were only a handful of houses in the area and Mr Matthews set up an inn in the area known as Wheat Lane End which was south of the crossroads. It was reputed that soldiers returning from the Battle of Waterloo rested at the inn and on hearing it had no name decided to call it the Heroes of Waterloo. By 1816 the area was known as Waterloo and by 1851,Ville had been added to the name.

After receiving support from the Heritage Lottery Grant, Waterlooville has now be commemorating and celebrating its

historic roots. Many local residents, community groups and schools have been getting involved in researching and recording the history of the town and helping at events.

Busy work has been going on in local schools and groups.

Young people from across the area have been entering a competition to design the new town flag. Lovely work has been produced and the judges are going to have a really hard time picking a winner! The winning design will be raised up the new flag pole on Saturday 20th June as part of the Waterlooville 200 Day. Artists and Historians have also been

visiting Padnell Infant School, Purbrook Junior School, Berewood Primary School and Hart Plain Junior School creating with the eager participants a timeline of Waterlooville’s history. Ten pop up banners will be designed from the school children’s work and these will be available for exhibitions and school projects.

The finished designs will be shown as part of the Waterlooville 200 festivities at Waitrose and Waterlooville Library. The Rachel Madocks School, Green Meadows Residential Home and local Scouts and Brownies are helping with the creation of 8 regimental banners which will be used in the parade. As part of the finale to the project there will be a commemorative plaque being unveiled in Waterlooville Precinct at 10am on Thursday 18th June and on Saturday 20th June there will be Waterlooville 200 Day, a day filled with activities, music and performance.

AUGUST GARDENING TIPS MID-MONTH EARLY IN THE MONTH • Keep dead-heading flowering plants and picking beans to maintain production • .Liquid feed bedding plants in tubs and baskets but switch to high Nitrogen feed which stimulates new growth for flowering later.

• If carrot fly bothers you, grow the crop under garden fleece or insect barrier mesh for excellent control.

• Thin out overcrowded water lily foliage on ponds.

• Start preparing the soil for laying new lawns next month.

• Vine Weevils will be laying eggs in tubs and containers now. One sure remedy is to water the compost with Bio Provado Vine Weevil Killer 2 – one application lasts 4 months.

• Take cuttings from Geraniums, Fuchsias, Penstemons and other semi-hardy plants.

• Keep Camellias, Magnolias, Pieris, Rhododendrons and Azaleas well watered to prevent bud drop later.

• Semi-ripe cuttings can be taken from a wide range of shrubs.

• Pot some strawberry runners into 18cm (7in) pots. Leave them outside until January then put them in the greenhouse for an early crop.

• Trim over lavender, Santolina (cotton lavender), Helichrysum (curry plant) lightly after flowering.

• Sow last outdoor carrots, lettuce, radish and spinach beet in the vegetable garden.

Yes its true, vegetable gardeners will soon be looking for good ways to store their freshly harvested onions and old tights can provide a superb storage system.

Just get the tights and push an onion right down into the toe, then tie a knot and put in another onion and make another knot above it. Keep on going like this until the tights are full, then hang them up in the shed. This provides neat, accessible storage with all round ventilation for the crop.

And if you think that’s strange, I knew a gardener once who kept stuffing a banana down his trousers – but that’s another story!

Recently I have seen a lot of people who suffer with golfers elbow (pain on inside of the elbow) in my clinic; golfers, weight lifters, office workers, builders, gardeners, people taking up new activities plus many more suffer from this problem.

Most people with this problem have some pain when lifting pans, opening jars, shaking hands, carrying shopping or turning the steering wheel of a car.

Golfers elbow, also known as medial epicondylitis is an overuse injury which occurs where the tendon which flexes the wrist attaches to the inside of the elbow. I am going to give you exercises which will help with golfers elbow. Physiotherapy treatment including frictions, massage, mobilisations combined with exercises are the best treatment for golfers elbow.

Acupuncture is another effective treatment for golfers elbow too, we offer this at our Havant clinic.

Elbow Flexion/Extension • Extend your arm with your palm facing up then bend and straighten at your elbow.

• Repeat 10 times, 3 times a day.

Wrist Flexor Strengthening • Support your forearm on a table with palm facing upwards • Hold a weight in the hand of your injured side.

• Use your other hand to bend your wrist up.

• Then let go of your wrist and use just your injured side to lower the weight slowly back to the starting position.

• Repeat 3 sets of 15, 2 times a day.

Wrist Flexor Stretch • Begin this exercise with your elbow straight and palm up.

• Take your wrist backwards so your fingers point down towards the floor using your other hand until you feel a mild to moderate stretch pain-free in your forearm.

• Hold for 30 seconds x 2, 3 times a day.

Havant U3A have continued with their regular programme of monthly meetings which have included talks on such diverse subjects as ' The Experiences of an Army Chaplain in the trenches during the 1914/18 Great War' , The Activities of a Town Crier ( With an active demonstration ! ), and 'Weather Lore' by a BBC Weatherman.

On 18th June there will be a talk on 'Plains Indians of North America ' by Susan Dewey who has lived among them. There will then be a break until the AGM on 17th September.

These meetings are held in the Bedhampton Social Hall in Havant on the third Thursday of the month and commence at 2.30pm. At each meeting there is an opportunity to meet and socialise with other Members over a cup of tea or coffee. and prospective new Members are very welcome.

Future activities include a day trip to Mansion House London and the Bank of England as well as visits and activities arranged by the special interest groups.

For those who are not aware of the U3A Movement it is a National Organisation with many local branches. It is aimed at those who are no longer in full time employment yet retain the urge to continue with or develop new interests in a sociable environment.

Family Church Havant are delighted to announce that their highly anticipated Havant Family Fun Day will be held in Havant Park on Saturday 18th July 2015, from 11am-4pm.

With over 2,000 families expected to attend from Havant and the surrounding areas, the Havant Family Fun Day has fast become one of the most looked forward to events in the local calendar.

The annual Havant Family Fun Day is a free fun-filled event, designed for the whole family with traditional stall games, a giant inflatable assault course, human table football, face

painting, a photo booth, the local fire brigade and fire engine, the local police and much more.

Throughout the afternoon there will also be live music from festival favourite Charlie Macaulay. To complete this family event refreshment/catering vans will be available on site.

As well as the annual Havant Family Fun Day, Family Church Havant also organise various other community events throughout the year, such as their Love Leigh Park Open Day at the Empower Centre Havant, regular community litter picks and seasonal gift-giving to the local residents.

Postcode Publications Continued funding supports work Beyond the Walls AirACES

The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre in Havant is delighted to announce continued funding from Arts Council England to support Beyond the Walls, its outreach programme of creative opportunities in the community.

In the year since the Beyond the Walls programme launched, The Spring delivered over 6,000 opportunities for residents to take part in creative activities, including live performances for families in libraries and community venues and projects for young people in schools and youth service settings.

The Arts Council have committed to provide funding for a further two years, meaning that The Spring can continue to build on the relationships established with local organisations and to deliver high quality work to people across the borough, particularly families and young people.

Already in the pipeline are a duo of outdoor theatre performances for families, another live theatre tour to libraries and a contemporary poetry project for young people.

Jemma Corbin, The Spring’s Outreach Manager, has managed the programme of events over the last year and says: “I’m so proud of the work we’ve done in just one short year and I can’t wait to

continue to build The Spring’s reach and impact into the community over the coming two years. I’ve loved seeing the impact of the work we’ve delivered, from the delight in the eyes of a child watching a theatre performance in their local library to the energy and courage of a young person performing to an audience for the very first time. Art really does have the power to transform lives and I am so excited to have the opportunity to bring more exciting work to Havant.”

‘From Wing Walker to Fly2Help’ - a talk by Helen Tempest Monday 27th July - 1900 for 1930 hrs Helen first wing walked at the age of 15 and used to 'bunk' off school to do displays.

At 21 she joined Vic Norman's wing walking team, AeroSuperBatics and spent 19 years wing walking with various sponsors at air shows throughout the UK and Europe. The team broke and created various world records; she learned to climb around the aircraft in mid-air and took the team across the sea to China and UAE. In total Helen wing walked for 25 years at over 1000 displays.

Helen now works as the National Air Smiles Day Advisor for fly2help. The charity inspires positive change in people's lives through the wonder of flight. They arrange Air Smiles Days at airfields around the country, for individuals, families and groups with critical or life-limiting illness, disability, poverty, bereavement, abuse and neglect.

Riders relax in Compton

Readers will know from frequent Postcode articles that the local CTC cycling group organises rides around the Havant area for cyclists of all levels to enjoy in the company of others and the safety of organised groups.

April saw the start of some fine weather for cycling and turn outs for CTC rides have increased. Recent rides from Havant have included a trip to the West Dean garden centre café to the north of Chichester, for coffee and cakes, with the faster riders going on to Graffham.

Another ride set out in three groups to the village store at Compton for more coffee and cakes, with some going on to Petworth.

Every month CTC has an Easy-ride. This allows newcomers to join members to try

a gentle club ride in the safety of a friendly group led by experienced riders. On these rides a little refreshment is always welcome and a stop is made at a suitable distance!

The national Cyclists' Touring Club has local groups across the UK. Portsmouth CTC has some 200 active members, many from Havant, Waterlooville and Emsworth. The Portsmouth CTC has leisurely Wednesday and Saturday rides starting at 09.15 from The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre, East Street, Havant. Potential new members are welcome to join a ride-out.

Cricket Havant Cricket Club suffered a second defeat of the season on 30 May. Both defeats have been in front of their own supporters at Havant Park. They went down to a last ball defeat to lowly St Cross Symondians CC on 16 May. With the Southern Electric Premier League title looking to be another battle between Havant and South Wilts CC, Havant were soundly beaten by their arch rivals at Havant Park. There were some positives for Havant but player coach Pete Hopkins conceded that the South Wilts side had played better on the day. Havant faced another big game on 6 June against third placed Hampshire Academy at the Ageas Bowl Nursery Ground.

The Havant CC boys U 9 ‘s played a friendly match against local rivals Emsworth CC boys U 9’s at Emsworth Recreation Ground on 26 May. The Havant boys won the game, but the teams met in a U 9’s league game at Havant Park on Sunday 7 June.

Emsworth CC is one of South East Hampshire’s oldest clubs dating from 1811.

The Club plays on the same Emsworth Recreation Ground pitch as it did in 1811.

It marked its Bicentennial anniversary in 2011. Emsworth CC plays T20’s on Wednesday evenings, Sunday friendly's, Winter Indoor Cricket and Saturday all-day cricket in the Hampshire League Division 4 South. It also has a Ladies team, the Emsworth Pearls.

Football Pompey, have appointed former Chesterfield boss Paul Cook as manager and the appointment appears popular with the fans. Star midfielder Jed Wallace has been sold to Wolves and Cook has signalled a major clear out of last season’s players, by stating that he wants to work with a small squad.

Tennis Andy Murray is enjoying his best ever clay court season having won his first two ATP events on the surface. His clay court game has been transformed under the guidance of lead coach Amelie Mauresmo and new second coach Jonas Bjorkman (as reported in my April column).

Expectant Amelie Mauresmo will hand over the coaching reigns to Jonas Bjorkman at the end of the French Open while she has her baby.

Expect Murray to enjoy two full weeks of tennis at Wimbledon this year.

Sailing Americas Cup sailing arrives in the Solent in July off Southsea sea-front.

The Regatta runs from Thursday 23rd Sunday 26th July 2015. Up to 500,000 visitors are expected over the four days. It provides the opportunity to watch the world’s best sailors battling it out on high speed AC45 foiling catamarans. There will be free-to-view and paid ticket options.

Victory Athletic Club Victory Athletic Club is an active running club based in Havant. It provides jogging and running for its near 200 members. The Club meets for training sessions at Havant Leisure Centre on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The training sessions start at 6:30 pm on Tuesdays for informal 'let's go for a run/jog' type sessions and at 6.00 pm on Thursdays. The Thursday sessions are normally taken by a SEAA qualified coach. As well as these varied training sessions there are club competitions and opportunities to run for the club in regional team events.

There are a number of closed to club 'handicap' races during the summer months.

These give members the chance to compete as equally as possible. In addition Victory AC competes in both on and off road events. These range from the Hampshire Cross Country League and the 'Today's Runner' Cross-Country

Purbrook Cricket Club - Double Century

Just one year after Lord’s new cricket ground opened for business in St. John’s Wood in 1814, the sports pages of the Hampshire Telegraph recorded the first written evidence of a cricket club representing the neat yet humble village of Purbrook.

The report described “a return match at cricket between eleven gentlemen of Denmead & Ervills and eleven of Purbrook….played on Monday last, on Ealward’s Plain.” The date of the match was September 11th, 1815.

This two innings contest at Denmead was tetchy. Full of low scores and controversy. Denmead scored 18 in their first knock; Purbrook replied with 31.

Denmead’s second innings score was 33 all out, leaving Purbrook needing just 21 runs for victory. The target soon proved difficult. With the Purbrook score at 12 for the loss of 6 wickets, tensions were growing. There was then a dispute over a

dead ball and a run out. The dispute became prolonged and the match was abandoned!

Purbrook’s ground at Purbrook Common (now Purbrook Heath) became a popular cricketing venue from the early 1800s. Local landowners, their gentrified pals, athletic farmhands and labourers were all called upon by the Squire. Matches were played midweek. Usually there was a sizeable wager on the result (typically 11 guineas or 22 guineas).

There were no pavilions but always there was a tent on site, serving the same purpose. Throughout the 19th century, Purbrook’s pitch was located on the driest part of this lowland heath. The tennis courts are there now. The surrounding common was used by local folk as pasture for their cattle and pigs.

By the 20th century, the nature of the old cricket pitch was being overtaken by developments. It was small, balls were too

South Hants Volleyball Club On Saturday 25th April Beverley Cooper, pictured, the Development Officer for South Hants Volleyball Club, received the Volunteer of the Year award at the Volleyball England Annual Awards evening at the National Volleyball Centre in Kettering.

Players and club officials from across the country gathered at the Volleyball England Annual Awards gala dinner. More than 50 trophies were awarded to players, coaches, officials and volunteers who had made a difference in the volleyball season. In her nomination for a national award, Beverley was described as an “inspirational character”. Beverley was given the award for the notable contribution she had made to the South Hants Volleyball Club and to volleyball in the local area, her achievements in setting up club/school links, running volleyball Go Spike sessions, founding the junior section of the club, coaching the National League Ladies team, visiting schools to introduce volleyball and helping to create a new county league in Hampshire to breach the competition gap between the local and national leagues. Beverley is also a volunteer Ambassador for Naomi House and Jacksplace Children’s and Young Peoples Hospices.

Beverley told Postcode after receiving the award ‘South Hants Volleyball Club are always looking for new players, beginners or experienced, to join and enjoy the Club. venue at Horndean Technology College on 6 June. Chris Gregory, a Great Britain volleyball star and a Sport England Sporting Champion will visit the Technology College. Chris is excited about Sport England’s development of satellite clubs such as ours to encourage young people aged between 14-25 years to take an active part in sport for at least 30 minutes every week rather than dropping out.’

easily lost in the gorse, and there was a dodgy slope towards the distant brook. The pitch was merely a swatch of common land on Squire Thistlethwayte’s Southwick Park Estate. Not much could be done with it.

A surprise came on May 7th 1936: Southwick Park Estate abruptly sold 18.391 acres of Purbrook Heath to Havant & Waterloo UDC for the bargain price of £100, on condition that “the land… shall always hereafter be used for the purpose of a Recreation Ground.”

Council plans to develop the sports field were interrupted by World War II but,

by May 1953, Purbrook Cricket Club had a brand new playing field hewn from Purbrook’s heathland. The conversion costs were £4,000.

Two cricket clubs shared the Heath:

Purbrook and ambitious rivals Christ Church (who morphed into Portsdown in 1969). Both Portsdown and Purbrook were founder members of the Hampshire Cricket League in 1973. In November 1982, sensibly they amalgamated. The name of Purbrook Cricket Club, the senior club, was retained.

The Club now runs three Saturday league teams, a Sunday XI, and five vibrant Colts teams.

2015 represents a proud 200th anniversary for Purbrook Cricket Club.

Poppy-Jay Watkins – Hampshire County Cricket Club - Development Programme

Hampshire CCC has a talented young girl cricketer in its U 11 Development Group with her sights on playing for England Ladies Cricket Team.

Poppy-Jay Watkins is just eleven years old.

She started in cricket by accident when she was aged 6. She had asked her school friend over for a play date, but her friend was going to cricket training with her dad Darren Flint, an ex-Hampshire cricketer. Darren a left arm spin bowler, now coaching Hampshire spin bowlers, was running cricket training sessions for boys under 9. He invited Poppy-Jay to join his daughter and the boys for the evenings training session. Poppy-Jay went, joined in and absolutely loved it. She won player of the night award, went back the next week and won the award again. From then on she was a cricket convert and fully hooked.

Poppy-Jay joined Hedge End Cricket club and played for the under 12 Girls team despite being only 7 years old. The girl’s team folded due to lack of numbers, but she joined Fair Oak girls team and played in their under 12 and under 15 teams, playing hard ball cricket at 8 years old.

Still only 8 years old Poppy-Jay trialled for the Winchester District Girls under 12 squad and was selected. She is now in her 3rd season playing for the District team and is team captain. Poppy-Jay has now trialled successfully for the Hampshire CCC under 11 development squad and plays regularly.

Poppy-Jay is an all-rounder. She is a left arm seam bowler, right handed bat and a strong fielder. Last season she was a wicket keeper but decided to concentrate on her bowling.

For the last 2 seasons Poppy-Jay has predominately played for Fair Oak Boys under 11 team and is a key player for them! PoppyJay said ‘Girls can do the same things as boys.

Sometimes playing with boys they think I am not going to be any good. So I think “watch out”. They soon realise I am a big hitter and a fast accurate bowler that’s hard to hit!’

Poppy-Jay is continuing to improve in the girl’s pathway to the Hampshire CCC U13 and U15 Age Groups. Beyond lays the crucial stepup to the England Women’s Development Programme U15 Group. I asked Poppy-Jay how she felt about getting into the ladies England Development set-up. She said ‘Since joining the District and Hampshire squads I have been getting lots of good coaching. It’s helping me improve things I used to find hard to do. If I keep getting better I might be able to get into the England Women’s Under 15’s.’

On the future, Poppy-Jay said ‘It’s not easy for girls. Girls do not get as many chances as boys. Anyway my hero is Charlotte Edwards and I like Heather Knight and Lydia Greenway in theEngland women’s cricket team.’

Poppy-Jay was also a keen and active member of Hayling Island Sailing. Her grandfather Keith Garner, himself a Sailing National Champion, is still a member of HISC and Poppy-Jay enjoys visiting the club with her parents Alison and Simon and her grandfather when she has any spare time.

Postcode Publications CRAFT BEERS – Enjoy your local brews

THE WHITE STUFF Now that summer is here it is time to think about cool refreshing beers that can be consumed on sun-drenched days. Most people automatically go for lager when they want a cold beer but I think most lagers are very bland, too fizzy and make for a rather unsatisfactory drink. Most of us now are quite discerning when it comes to wine and no longer drink Liebfraumilch and other cheap sweet wines, preferring to spend more money on a decent bottle of Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay. So why do we still consume huge amounts of industrially brewed tasteless lager? There is an alternative beer which is refreshing, cool and full of flavour, namely the numerous Wheat (or White) Beers which were traditionally brewed in Germany and Belgium.

The best known of these beers is the cloudy Belgian Hoegaarden which did enjoy some popularity a few years ago but now seems to be harder to find in the shops.

Belgian wheat beers are brewed using barley, unmalted wheat, yeast, water, hops and some additional flavourings such as coriander and dried orange peel. These extra flavourings are very subtle and add character to the beer. Germany also produces wheat beers which are known as weissebier. They are brewed with malted barley, malted wheat, yeast, hops and water but no additional flavourings. German beers can be either cloudy (unfiltered) “heffe” or clear “kristal”. Wheat beers are top

fermented like traditional ales but do not have a strong flavour of either malt or hops.

The addition of wheat to the brew produces a totally different type of drink which I feel is well suited to be consumed on a summer’s day. Wheat beers also go

Brewed in the French speaking south of Belgium this beer is very light coloured and not at all bitter or sour. It is very refreshing with a slightly spicy taste.

I have been around the local supermarkets in the Havant area and here are a few of my recommendations for quaffing on a summer’s day. Wheat beers should be drunk cool (5°- 8° C). Expect to pay from £1.80 -£2.00 for a 330 ml bottle and £2.00 - £2.50 for a 500 ml bottle.

Hoegaarden - Inbev, Belgium (4.9%) 330 ml.

First brewed in 1966 this is the wheat beer which put white beers on the world’s stage. It is still brewed in the small Belgian town of Hoegaarden but the brand is owned by AB Inbev who are the world’s largest brewers. It has a clean refreshing,

slightly tart taste.

Vedett Extra White - Duvel Moortgat, Belgium (4.7%) 330 ml Duvel are best known for their strong pale ale but this wheat beer deserves attention. It is has a somewhat lemony taste and is slightly fizzy. This is the perfect drink to use to convert a lager drinker to wheat beers.

Hitachino Nest - Kiuchi Brewery, Japan. (5.5%) 330ml Japan has a tradition of brewing beers which goes back to the C19 when German brewers introduced beer to Japan. This White Ale has a pale straw colour with a rich toasty flavour.

Franziskaner Weissbier - SpatenFranziskaner, Germany. (5.0%) 500 ml This Bavarian pale wheat beer has a slightly tart taste and is cloudy (unfiltered) It can also be found in dark (Dunkel) and strong (Bock) versions. Although there are no added flavours the beer has a spicy taste.

Weihenstephan Heffe Weissbier Weihenstephaner, Germany. (5.4%) 500 ml This cloudy beer is brewed by the world’s oldest brewery. It has flavours of banana and cloves, together with some bitterness.

Do ask for a wheat beer the next time you go out for a drink – I think you will be pleasantly surprised, especially if you have not tried this most refreshing and subtly flavoured drink.

Langstone Cutters Rowing Club is a friendly club rowing traditional fixed-seat pulling boats in Langstone and Chichester Harbours on England's south coast.
