RYA sailing coach, Melvyn Cooper, the inspiration and founder of the highly successful HISC Get Racing Club, was named runner up in the 2015 Havant Borough Sports Association Sports Coach of the Year last week.

Launched in April 2014, Melvyn (of Melvyn Cooper Sailing) has been the driving force behind the new Get Racing Club which encourages new sailors to have a go at racing in a fun and informal format at HISC. Throughout last season, Melvyn was instrumental in organizing dates, arranging mentors, encouraging participants and overseeing the on-water events. Dates for the 2015 Get Racing Club events are all

arranged and the club has been active over the winter season with a series of Winter Talks.

The HISC ‘Get Racing Club’ start of season party recently heralded the 2015 season kick- of.

The Sports Coach of the Year is part of Havant Borough Sports Association recognition for achievement.

Commenting on receiving the award Melvyn noted "It was really exciting to be nominated by Hayling Island Sailing Club and I was absolutely thrilled to collect a runner up prize for Coach of the Year 2015. It’s a great honour. ”

Improvements to Dunsbury Way A £120,000 scheme has begun to enhance sustainable transport hubs and improve public space in Dunsbury Way, Leigh Park, Havant.

Dunsbury Way was identified as requiring improvements due to the high levels of bus users and the proximity of a number of community based buildings.

The improvements will include current bus stops on both sides being repositioned slightly, so vehicles can pass safely, new bus shelters installed with Real Time Information and Block paving to

highlight bus stopping areas with bollards installed where required preventing any verge damage.

Outside the Community Centre, a small green park space with trees will be created to improve the frontage aspect of the building, with cycle stands for community centre users.

A shared pedestrian and cycle path from the library to High Lawn Way will make 3 new on-street car spaces on Bishopstoke Road for dropping off to the crèche and community centre.

Meet Your Local Village Agents You may have already met Ken, who has been in place as a Village Agent in Northney, Hayling Island for 2 years now.

Age Concern Hampshire have now appointed Cathy as a second Village Agent to volunteer alongside Ken. The Village Agent service reaches out to older people in rural areas. The service is funded by Hampshire County Council and provides information to people over the age of 50 on a variety of services that help them to live independently in their own homes for longer.

The project co-ordinator said: “Village Agents are respected volunteers who operate in rural areas of the county identified by Age Concern Hampshire and Hampshire County Council where there are older people who might need information and support.

Cathy and Ken’s voluntary role is not to compete against other agencies already in

place, but to signpost where there is a need.

Village Agents have lots of resources and contacts and have undergone training with Age Concern Hampshire. Cathy and Ken have also received training from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and are able to offer free basic home fire safety checks for older people.”

In the aftermath of the Second World War a group of friends formed Hayling Island Amateur Dramatic Society (‘HIADS’) and soon found a home in the Barn Theatre, performing plays from 1950 until the mid 1990s.

In 1992 the Society heard that they would soon have to leave the Barn, and a determined group of members made a plan to convert the old goods shed at the site of Hayling Island Railway Station (closed in 1963) into a 144 seat theatre.

With the backing of Havant Borough Council a massive fund raising effort was started involving a huge effort by HIADS members to deploy every conceivable money-making scheme. The society estimates that the members put in an estimated 30,000 hours of effort on the building, and with fund-raising and applications for grants.

The wholly volunteer run theatre has

comfortable raked seats, its own car park and a licensed bar and art gallery. The box office is open six days a week for two hours a day and online booking is available. New members are always welcome and there is plenty of opportunity to work in lighting, sound, wardrobe, set building, props and stage management, front of house as well as treading the boards.

The Station Theatre is now used for HIADS drama, ranging from light comedy and panto to classic pieces and also for films and visiting professional groups and local dance and musical societies. There is a thriving youth group (‘HIYA’) that participates in adult plays and has its own production once a year.

Now the summer is approaching we have some serious complaints that the residents of North Hayling do not receive enough sunshine, it all went to the south. As most Islanders are aware Hayling is built on an axle, so early this morning with the help of 3,000 residents who

lined the beach at sunrise we gently pushed the Island around, and with the help of 7 tugs from HM Dockyard Portsmouth the operation was a success. Now the northern part is facing the sun, unfortunately we are still working on the bridge. It's only a small jump.

Swain & Co family Solicitors are offering a new service providing advice to cohabiting couples who are purchasing a property together. The new service focuses on situations where: • An unmarried couple are purchasing a property together; • The deposit for the property is being provided by a parent; • The parent may want some protection for their money to be returned should the couple separate.

Unmarried couples have very few rights upon separation which can leave a parent who has helped them financially in a difficult situation. If there is no Declaration of Trust specifically providing for the parent’s money to be paid to them upon the sale of the property, then the only protection the parent has is the good will of the couple to return the money. In the eyes of the law, it will be seen as a gift unless proved otherwise.

A cohabitation agreement can set out the circumstances under which the money will be repaid. This means that in the unfortunate event of a separation, there is one less thing to argue about as it will have been agreed in advance.

This provides certainty for the parents and lessens the risk of their relationship with their child going sour when money gets lost as a result of a separation.

A cohabitation agreement can include anything that the couple would like to and can be adapted to suit the circumstances of the couple entering in to it.

The skills of a Havant lawyer have been recognised by the UK’s leading family law group – Resolution.

Nicola Whitley, family lawyer at law firm Swain & Co, has recently gained Resolution accredited specialist status.

Nicola Whitley, who has been qualified for six years, undertook her law degree at the University of Surrey and her Legal Practice Course at Guildford. She trained with Swain & Co and has progressed within the firm and is now a Senior Associate Solicitor.

Nicola Whitley has passed her examinations in private children law and in domestic abuse to gain her specialist status under the Resolution scheme.

Originally set up in 1999, the scheme is designed to help people who are facing family breakdown to make an informed choice when deciding which lawyer to appoint. To become a Resolution accredited specialist, lawyers have to agree to uphold the Resolution Code of Practice and to have passed a written test demonstrating a Nicola Whitley is one of a growing number of Hampshire lawyers to achieve Resolution accreditation. She comments, “As a Resolution member, I am committed to encouraging a non-confrontational approach to resolving family disputes. That way, both the emotional and financial costs of divorce or family breakdown are minimised for those involved.

Postcode Publications TELEVISION THROUGH THE AGES A recent visit to the Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre, near Arundel, West Sussex, has started me thinking about the role of television in our lives over the last 80 years. Amberley Museum has, amongst many other exhibits, an Historic Wireless and Communications collection which contains a number of old televisions. These old black and white sets, mainly from the 1950’s, are housed in large wooden cabinets and have very small screens compared with the slim, ultra wide screen models of today.

Television broadcasting in Britain began in London in 1936 using the 405 lines standard in black and white. This service continued on a limited basis until the outbreak of World War II in 1939.

Broadcasting resumed after the war ended but it was not until the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 that TV ownership really took off. Early televisions were very expensive and it was only in 1956 that commercial television (ITV) started and viewers had a choice of two channels. In the 1960’s moulded plastics came into use displacing the wooden cabinet. Televisions became less like items of furniture and more like functional accessories. In 1964 BBC 2 started broadcasting, initially only in black and white, but by 1967 the first colour TV service started using the 625 lines standard.

Colour television provided an incentive to have larger sets but they still used the Cathode ray tube (CRT) as the picture source. This meant that the sets were very bulky and it was many years before flat screen televisions were to appear. It took until 1985 before all of the old black and white 405 lines transmitters were switched off. Apparently there are still 28000 Black and white TV licences issued each year to people who are using only monochrome televisions. The 1980’s also saw the introduction of the Video Cassette Recorder (VCR) which enabled people to record programmes and rent or buy films to watch at home.

In 1982 Channel 4 started broadcasting

and was joined in 1997 by Channel 5. Some 60 years after television first came to Britain terrestrial viewers still only had a choice of 5 channels. In 1989 Sky first started commercial satellite broadcasting in the UK and heralded the multi-channel world we all take for granted today. Around the same time cable television came to Britain but only to large urban areas.

Change was also on its way for ordinary viewers when terrestrial digital TV started in 1998. This became Freeview in 2002. In 2007 the changeover from 625 lines to Freeview digital began and was eventually completed in 2012 when the last analogue transmitters were switched off.

It was not until the beginning of C21 that flat screen TVs became widespread and the bulky CRT TVs were replaced. The technology had been around for some time with the plasma screen first being conceived in the 1930’s. Initially plasma TVs were incredibly expensive but prices came down and soon even they were replaced with another technology, LED TVs which now make up most of the sets in use today.

If you are looking at buying a new television then there are a bewildering variety of screen sizes and types available.

3D TVs, “smart” TVs, curved screen, LED, OLED, etc. If money is no object then 85” TVs are now available for approx. £10,000. If your budget is more modest then it is possible to buy a 22” TV for just over £100.

If you are confused by all of this new technology then I can recommend a publication aimed at helping viewers getting the best out of their TV. “Television Viewers Guide” published by Clive Woodyear. It covers Freeview, satellite and cable TV plus internet catch up services. There is also advice on choosing a new TV with diagrams showing how to connect up DVD players, satellite boxes, surround sound systems, etc.

Havant Camera Club has continued its successful season with a 'must see' talk from Brian Pettit, a professional Natural History photographer. He brought a special very large screen for a spectacular multimedia presentation of animals and flowers from all over the world, beautifully photographed and with suitable music. We enjoyed it very much!

We have also hosted the annual 3 Hs competition [Havant, Horndean and Hayling], with Ken Scott [ARPS] adjudicating, however he failed to judge us the winners – we were second, sadly. A very high standard of entry, though.

Perhaps we'll get it back next year.

There was a Members' Evening last month, where anyone who wanted had a table to show aspects of their work, past and present. One Member specialises in the local history of Emsworth, having amassed a large collection of photographs covering the last hundred years or so. He also restores those which have suffered from damage or simply faded by age, to an amazingly-high

standard. There were also photobooks of Members' travels all over the world, very professionally presented. Other tables showed more recent work, with some highly experimental prints! And then, there was specialist camera gear, old and new...

We have also enjoyed a superb evening with Chris Palmer, well known to our club, who talked to us about his recent Fellowship [there is no higher distinction] of the Royal Photographic Society. He took us through the thought and work involved to produce the panel, as well as bringing along the rejects, which were also great.

New play equipment at Front Lawn

A zip-wire and spinning dish has now been installed at Front Lawn Recreation Ground thanks to funding from developer contributions.

Pupils who attend Front Lawn Primary Academy helped with the installation of the new equipment by taking part in a Bob the Builder day with contractors Sutcliffe Play.

The school has been involved in the process from the start and pupils have learnt about consultation, voting and group discussion.

Mr James Munt, Head teacher at Front Lawn Primary Academy, said: “We were delighted to be involved in this process and the hands on learning opportunity it provided for the pupils involved was invaluable”. Following local consultation the new play equipment costing £9,450 is now being enjoyed by all.

Warblington School realising potential : unlocking success On the 24th of March 2015 our school entered the Southern Regional Rock Challenge at the Guildhall in Portsmouth. Fifty students performed, created amazing hairstyles, make-up designs, lighting and video edits for our final performance.

Students ranging from Year 7 to 10 worked together and engaged with other schools to make the day a fun and extremely positive experience. Their behaviour was outstanding and they were true ambassadors for Warblington School.

Our theme was devised by the students, loosely based on Alice in Wonderland, but developed to target youngsters and issues they may face during their years at school. The students researched and designed their own costumes and set designs and contributed their own ideas to the music and choreography.

We had a fantastic day and the staff are immensely proud of all the students involved. We are already excited about our next entry!

On Saturday 21st March, eleven students from Warblington School took part in the Rock and Pop section of Portsmouth Music Festival.

Our Key Stage 3 Band was awarded honours and picked up Best Key Stage 3 Band. Our Key Stage 4 Band ‘Midnight Parade’ was given the Garrett Shield for the Best Overall Band, the Bryan Baber Cup for Outstanding Performance and two trophies for the Best Key Stage 4 Band. Warblington students also gained many individual awards including the John Gleadall Cup for Unique Performance, Best Original Song, Best Instrumentalist, Best Bassist and Best MultiInstrumentalist.

The Music Festival was a huge success for Warblington School. The students not only showed their skills off as highly talented musicians but also gave good performances that provided entertainment and made all the students stand out in a unique and promising way.

Postcode Publications Portsmouth Music Festival For a chorus that has not competed before,this was the perfect choice. Not to0 big or intimidating,friendly and fun. A ladies chorus,"One A-ccord" came from the Scottish Borders to join forces with "Spiritof-The-South",a local chorus. Together we sang as"Crossing Borders"which was very apt. After a welcome drink with us on Friday evening,a bit of sight-seeing on Saturday morning,and four hours training after lunch,we were getting on really well and everything came together,thanks to our Directors. Anyone who has sung Acappella,or Four Part Harmony unaccompanied,will appreciate the time and effort that goes into all these competitions

and we all just had the best time. The judges comments to every chorus were given very sensitively and always with encouragement.

To the delight of the Scottish ladies(and us)we were awarded a cup in the Opportunity Knocks section.

This was our own choice of songs and we sang "And So It Goes"and "With A little Help From My Friends". "At Last" and "Taking A Chance On Love"gained us a Trophy.So,after a thoroughly good weekend our new friends went home with plenty to think about.

Postcode Publications Businesses on Hayling are you dreaming Supporting nesting birds in Chichester Harbour of expanding? Then follow the LEADER Rural businesses are getting the chance to apply for their share of £3.2m in EU and Government funding this summer.

The LEADER programme, announced by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs, will provide grants to small businesses, farmers, foresters and communities for projects that create jobs and grow the rural economy.

Funding has been allocated to two Local Action Groups (LAGs), one of which covers Hayling Island, in the Borough of Havant.

Both LAGs are made up of local people and organisations with knowledge of rural issues and their communities. They will decide which projects to fund. The process will be supported by West Sussex County Council. Funds will be available to apply for this summer.

Surf Shack making waves A kiosk on Hayling beach has reopened after a change of ownership.

The Surf Shack Café is at the western end of the Island, close to the Inn on the Beach and the skate park, and is already proving popular with a wide variety of customers.

“We get a really nice age range and mix of customers,’ say new owners John Priestley and Jane Mantle. The couple already run the kiosk on the beach near to Hayling Ferry, and plan to make their second kiosk just as popular with visitors and regulars.

Little Terns spend their winters on the western coasts of Africa and return to Britain to breed on shingle spits, islands and beaches close to the high tide line.

In the past, Little Terns have nested and successfully raised young in Chichester Harbour, although, sadly no young have fledged from here since the 1990’s. a loss of suitable nesting habitat due to development pressure and rising sea levels washing away chicks and eggs from their low lying nests, disturbance from people and dogs off the lead in breeding colonies, limited availability of small fish close to their nesting areas along with natural predation.

Chichester Harbour Conservancy, together with its partners, is committed to managing the Harbour in a way that maximises the ability of birds to nest in summer and feed in their tens of thousands in winter. This March, with volunteer rangers from the Friends of Chichester

Harbour, they cleared vegetation from an area of shingle on Ella Nore Spit in order to create more favourable nesting conditions for the Little Tern along with other sea-birds and waders that occasionally nest here. The Conservancy will also be erecting a temporary electric fence this spring on a small section of the spit in order to protect nesting birds from human and dog disturbance and ground predators.

Postcode Publications Turning up the heat – staying warm comes at a price Households across the Portsmouth area estimate that they spend more than £870 per year on heating bills, yet nearly three quarters of adults still feel cold at home according to new research from Barratt Homes.

Spending patterns on heating vary significantly across the country, the Scots are the biggest, spending paying £167 more than those in the South East.

According to research, the biggest influence on heating bills is the age of the property. Typical new-build home-owners save on average £600 per year when it comes to heating bills.* And the gap between old and new is growing – a recent calculation from Government suggested that new build homes are 30% more efficient than even five years ago.

Rather than reaching for the thermostat, the research said other ways to keep warm in winter months include putting on extra clothes (68%), having a hot drink (54%) or cuddling up with their partner, children or pets (28%). An active 6% resort to exercising indoors to help boost their temperature.

The research also showed that, far from being the heart of the home, the kitchen emerged as the coldest room in the house for one in five home-owners (20%), with the hall a close second (18%).

Mark and Faye Wheller of Hayling Island with Helen and Emma Bailey of Leigh Park joined fund-raisers from across the south at the annual awards evening for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) the type 1 diabetes charity.

The evening celebrated the hard work put in by fund-raisers from various events over the year. Mark and Faye organised a hugely successful Walk for a Cure on Hayling Island in September. Helen and Emma made cakes and served refreshments at a race held in Selsey organised by Emma's older brother and also received a donation from the race participants.

They all took part in an indoor skydive held in Basingstoke where Rufus, the charities mascot was also in action.

The two families have joined forces to make 'Team Welly' with the aim of raising even more this year and achieving a platinum award for those raising over 10K. JDRF is improving lives until they find the cure. They fund research to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes. They provide information for children, adults and parents living with the condition, at all stages from diagnosis and beyond. They give a voice to people with type 1 diabetes and campaign for increased focus on, and funding for, research to find the cure.

Postcode Publications The Women’s Institute Centenary Baton Tour To celebrate the centenary in 2015, the WI has sent a baton round every area of England and Wales.

It set off from Anglesey, where it all began, in January 2013 and has already been round much of Wales and England on its way eventually to London in June 2015 in time for the National AGM at the Royal Albert Hall.

In January the baton travelled through West Sussex and on the afternoon of Tuesday 13th January 2015 it was brought into Baton in Havant Hampshire and handed over to the Staunton Group of WIs - comprising Bidbury Mead WI (Bedhampton), Denvilles WI (Havant), Rowlands Castle WI and Stoke & North Hayling WI.

They held a reception at The Meeting Place in Elm Lane, Havant for all members at which the Mayor of Havant was a guest. There was a great spirit of celebration and the WI was toasted with bubbly and celebration cake. From there, in the afternoon, about 15 members representing the 4 WIs, all dressed in 1915 costumes, paraded with a banner to Havant Station where they caught a train to Portsmouth Harbour.

In Portsmouth they paraded to the Maritime Club to join membe rs from the Victory Group of WIs in Portsmouth. Together they paraded through the dockyard, accompanied by the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, and led by a piper and drummer. They boarded HMS Victory where they handed over the baton from Staunton Group to Victory Group who then had to pass it on to the next group in Hampshire.

Hayling College Girls Fundraising Year 8 girls fundraise for British Heart Foundation and spread a little love at the same time!!

Between Friday 6th - 13th February, four wonderful Year 8 girls, Sonet Strachan, Willow Travers Ayre, Scarlet Dymock and Elena Barter, worked incredibly hard in

various ways to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

Sonet and Willow said "We heard about our friends, family and those of our teachers, having heart problems and we wanted to raise awareness. We set up a stall, selling cakes and valentines for a week. We supported the National 'Wear it, Beat it' event on February 6th by asking pupils to donate money for wearing something red to school. We had discussed it all with our Headteacher, Mr Rainford, who agreed to what we wanted to do. As a result of this we raised £418.49. We are proud of our accomplishments and will be doing it again next year."

The modest girls fail to mention that they personally baked the cakes and cookies each evening to sell the following day, and gave up every break and lunchtime for that week to man the stall. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and also thank the pupils and staff of The Hayling College for their kind donations.

Volunteering, it's a 'win win'!

Volunteering adds to 'quality of life' for both the participant and receiver. Corporate volunteering is beginning to become well established with some local companies in the Havant and East Hampshire areas.

A group of employees from Pfizer, based at New Lane, Havant, spent a morning talking to residents at Abbeyfield's home for older people. Janet Duggan, Volunteer Co-ordinator at Community First HEH says "With an ageing population more and more people are leaving their homes to live in a residential setting with many people having no friends or family for support.

The purpose of the volunteers' visit was to talk to the residents, having fun with a quiz and serving home made cakes and tea. Having a visitor for just an hour can make a real difference to the life of an older person living in care and we welcome anyone interested in

Charlotte Pettit a member of the Pfizer team volunteering at Abbeyfield summed up the feelings of those involved with her comment: "Today has been a wonderful experience to meet the residents and to hear some of their life stories. One of the volunteers at Abbeyfield uses Pfizer Enbrel Products which has given her a new lease of life after living with severe arthritis. We are grateful to be given the opportunity to volunteer in the community by Pfizer".

Food and Wine We love Prosecco As a country, our love affair with Prosecco is growing stronger. Recent figures show that sales of the Italian sparkling wine were up by 75% with all the top major supermarkets recording growth sales year on year. Sales have now overtaken those of Champagne for the first time. Basically, we love the stuff!

Some of the discount retailers such as Aldi and Lidl offer Prosecco at a cracking price of under £6 a bottle which is contributing to the success. However, many leading industry experts believe that this could be harming the brand and believe that many of the producers would be shocked at this price point here in the UK. This though has helped to turn the brand into the perfect alternative to Champagne. That, plus the fact that we prefer the style that Prosecco produces. The light, softer, fruitier characters tend to appeal to us more.

It can also be in a less bubbly style (Frizzante) which we also love.

Prosecco, like Champagne can only come from one particular region, the Veneto in North West Italy. The vineyards are centered around two towns, Valdobbiadene and Conegliano. The best examples of Prosecco come from this DOCG with the very best coming from Cartizze, a small area located within the Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG where the grapes are grown on very steep vineyards. The term ‘Rive’ which you may see on a bottle denotes that the wine was made from the best grapes from the steepest vineyards.

The grape variety used is the Glera, which until 2010 was known as Prosecco, however the name was changed to stop producers in other parts of the country growing the grape and passing the wine off as Prosecco. The production method differs to Champagne which is the reason for the difference in price. With Champagne, more yeast is added to the bottle where the secondary fermentation takes place . The wine is then aged for a minimum of 18 months, usually longer and then disgorged.

With Prosecco, the secondary fermentation takes place in the tank ( Charmat Method) therefore the yeast cells can be filtered out which is less time consuming as the process of disgorgement is not required. Where the majority of Prosecco is made in this way, producers in the Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG area are allowed to use the traditional method as used in Champagne.

The sales trends that suppliers are witnessing indicate that our Prosecco love affair is going to continue for some time, but while Champagne has never left our hearts, who will ultimately win the battle of the bubbles?

Cranberry and Walnut Tea Loaff A delicious wholesome treat for all the family. To make this even healthier, I have reduced the amount of sugar and used orange juice instead of milk and the dried cranberries, walnuts and seeds gives it a beautiful texture along with the extra fibre and natural goodness too. One slice will not be enough! For those of you who are gluten intolerant there is a gluten-free combination self-raising flour available from Dove Farm which should be used in place of the oats, self-raising flour and bran.

1. Rub butter into flour until it resembles fine bread crumbs

Ingredients 150 g unsalted butter 150 g self-raising flour (mixture of wholewheat and white flour if preferred) 75 g caster sugar 50 g oats 25 g bran/ wheat germ 150 g cranberries 75 g chopped walnuts 150 g orange juice 2 large eggs 50 g sunflower/ pumpkin seeds Method 1. Line loaf tin with grease proof paper and pre heat oven to 160 degrees fan.

2. Rub butter into flour until it resembles breadcrumbs using finger tips or dough hook of cake mixer.

3. Stir in sugar, fruit and walnuts and other dry ingredients.

4. In separate bowl beat eggs lightly and add orange juice pour into dry mixture and stir well.

5. Pour into lined loaf tin and bake for 45 to 55 minutes until cooked through and well risen.

During my years of interest I’ve seen the market in Victorian wares reduce from being the strongest area, with a rise in the ‘collectables’ market, which attracts the collector to acquire far more recently produced items than before.

A significant area in this market is the work of studio glassmakers and potters.

A number of years ago I became aware of the Carn Pottery in Cornwall. Set up by the potter John Beusmans in his late teens around 1970 (with a little help from his parents), and still in production.

PLAZA YOUTH CONFERENCE Raising Aspirations was the theme at a youth conference held at The Plaza.

A number of pupils in Years nine and ten from all ten senior schools across the borough were invited to attend the conference which aimed to inspire local young people.

Students listened to speeches from guest speakers Joanne White, founder of the local charity Big World Impact and young entrepreneur and self made millionaire Fraser Docherty, who started his own business at the age of 14 selling fruit jam.

Workshops led by Motiv8 and the Wheatsheaf Trust were on offer as well as a Councillors question time when the Leader of Havant Borough Council, Councillor Michael Cheshire and local Councillors answered questions.

As part of the event a special “Approved by You” Scheme empowered young people under the age of 18 to cast their vote for one of three projects which support children and young people across the borough. Short films promoting their services from Havant Home Start, Off The Record and Southern Domestic Abuse Service were shown and pupils made the decision to support SDAS through a ballot.

SDAS CEO Claire Chatwin was thrilled that the majority of the young people had taken the decision to support young people who had experienced domestic abuse.

Havant Volunteer Awards Ceremony 2015 Volunteers across Havant Borough were recognised recently for their volunteering contribution to the local community. The event took place at The Public Service Plaza where volunteers were presented with Certificates from The Mayor of Havant, Cllr Marjorie Smallcorn.

Volunteers were nominated by organisations from across the Havant area.

Tim Houghton, from Community First HEH, who helped organise the event, said “the event was a great success with people being recognised from an amazing variety of areas such as community groups, children and young people, heritage, older people, churches, colleges, families, disability groups, environmental, and the police.” Feedback from the day has been really positive with volunteers saying “We are particularly grateful for the kindness of everyone who looked after us so spectacularly, we were made to feel really special and welcome”.

This year The Mayor Cllr Marjorie Smallcorn presented three special awards.

Two Lifetime Achievement Awards went to Keith Stoneman from Havant Borough Talking Newspaper and Bruce Hodgkins from Havant & East Hampshire Mind. The Young Volunteer Award was presented to Chris Peskett from The Right to Work CIC. Chris said “The award meant a lot to me and I really enjoyed the day. It was a

fantastic experience to meet the Mayor especially on my birthday!”.

The day started with a buffet lunch hosted by The Mayor. Musical entertainment was provided by young people from “Midnight Parade” at Warblington School.

My son is slowly getting used to being left at his childminders, he has a great time there.

I hope you found my last exercises for Plantarfaciitis useful. Today I will give you some exercises to help strengthen and stabilise if you have sacro-iliac joint dysfunction (pelvis/hips out of alignment).

Core stability exercises help support your pelvis and back.

A lot of people have weak core muscles.

Core muscles are not your six pack muscles (rectus abdominus) they are deeper muscles (transverses abdominus) which support the pelvis and spine, they aren’t always targeted when people are working out.

It is important to make sure you have good core stability to support you back and pelvis which will help maintain pelvis alignment, reduce pain, prevent the risk of injury and improve posture. The exercises below will teach you how to activate your core stability muscles.

Please note that a lot of people who have pelvis alignment problems often describe not feeling level, one leg feels longer or in the wrong place and complain of stiffness and pain around their hips and/or lower back. The best treatment is hands on manipulation and mobilisation to correct the alignment then core stability exercises to maintain the alignment.

• Maintain a straight body line through extended leg, body and extended arm. Repeat with opposite limbs.

• Tighten the lower abdominals and maintain a straight body line through feet, hips and head.

HAVANT BOROUGH SPORTS AWARDS Hockey player, sports fan, and Parliamentary candidate Alan Mak was Guest Speaker at this year's Havant Borough Sports Awards held at Havant Leisure Centre on 26 February 2015.

Local sports clubs honoured included Havant and Waterlooville Swim Club, Havant Hockey Club, Langstone Cutters Gig Club and Hayling Golf Club.

PRIZE POETRY COMPETITION 2015 The theme for this year's HLF) competition is “Boundary”. Poets may interpret that theme in any way they choose.

You can enter as many entries as you like which will be adjudicated by Joan McGavin. Each entry attracts a fee of £4.00.

Each poem or group of poems submitted must be accompanied by a completed and signed entry form. If you are submitting more than four poems please list the additional titles on a separate sheet of paper and attach this to the entry form.

All entries must be entirely original work and must not have been previously published, nor must they be published after submission before 31st October 2015.

Poems must not be shared previously with any member of the HLF committee or the judge, nor recorded or reproduced on any website, blog or social media site. HLF reserve the unconditional right not to accept any entry.

Poems should be limited to 40 lines only. Shorter poems are also most welcome. Entries must be in English, typed single spaced on A4, single-sided and securely fastened; each entry starting on a new sheet.

Entries will be disqualified if they show name, address or identifying marks other than the title.

Entries are not returned, so please keep a copy. No corrections can be made after receipt, nor fees refunded.

The Rowans Hospice Sorting Depot Needs Help!

Without volunteers many charities and voluntary organisations would just not exist.Volunteers provide the backbone of support to many organisations helping them to provide an essential service to the community. The Rowans Hospice is a local charity dedicated to improving the lives of people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. This week a team of employees from Pfizer, based at New Lane, Havant, spent the day at The Rowans Hospice Warehouse, sorting clothes and other items that the public donate, ready to be sold in one of the 21 Rowan Hospice Charity Shops.

Andrew Cordery from The Rowans Hospice says “It has been fantastic to have 10 volunteers from Pfizer help us for the

day sorting clothes and other donated items at our Farlington sorting warehouse.

We have helped more than 7,000 patients and families across Portsmouth and South East Hampshire, our service is free of charge but costs £4.8 million to continue our work. We are in desperate need of more volunteers, either teams or individuals to continue our work.”

Lively Conversations with Other Women Do you have an opinion on the Age of Criminal Responsibility? Do you think appearances matter a lot, or not at all?

Have you heard about the 12 Step Programme? Can you think of anything you learnt at school that you can still remember but have never used?

Do you enjoy a lively discussion, which might be about anything at all?

A newly-formed weekly group for women of all ages serves that very purpose.

We have ‘borrowed’ the BBC name, although in our case it stands for ‘Bonkers Birds in Conversation’, and also their strapline, so our aim is ‘To Inform, Educate and Entertain’.

We meet weekly on a Tuesday evening and each week we take a different topic, one of the group will introduce it and we then have a lively discussion, which sometimes wanders off down unexpected avenues. We stop for a break for tea, coffee and biscuits and then pick up from where we left off!

Sometimes, the topic will only need to

be introduced with a sentence or two as everyone will know what we are talking about, sometimes we learn something of interest, or sometimes it is just fun – but you can be sure we will all have opinions about whatever the topic is.

All the topics are suggested by members of the group, who are not required to lead them if they feel they’d rather not although it is lovely if they would like to!

We ask for a donation of £3 per week to cover the cost of the room hire and refreshments. Postcode Publications Portsmouth Choir Welcomes St Faith’s new Rector Westbourne Open Gardens

A packed church enjoyed a concert organised to give a very public welcome to the newly installed Rector of St.Faith’s, Canon Tom Kennar on 28th February.

Topping the bill was the local Solent Male Voice Choir based in Portsmouth, ably assisted with Flute Solos by Louise Sulley from the Isle of Wight. Canon Kennar himself sang two solos in magnificent style to thunderous applause which perhaps indicates the standard of music that the congregation will have to match in future!

Canon Tom Kennar was installed on 17th February by Rt. Revd Christopher Foster, Bishop of Portsmouth. Canon Kennar moved here from being a team rector in North End, Portsmouth, which included the church, St Nicholas, where the Choir rehearses each Tuesday. He is already known in the area having served in Emsworth but also has links with churches in West Africa where he is Canon of two cathedrals.

Solent Male Voice Choir was formed in 1961 by a group of Portsmouth postmen, based at the Head Post Office. As the choir expanded the name changed in 1974 reflecting the extended membership and concert venues attended. For example, last year they hosted concerts in Hayling Island for a Gloucestershire MVC and on the Isle of Wight for a Cornish MVC. Their growing confidence and competence is such that over the approaching late May Bank Holiday

weekend they have been invited to sing in South Wales at two concerts – including singing in Welsh! In 2016 a performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London is possible.

The Making of Havant Havant historian Ralph Cousins has just reproduced five local history booklets under the title of 'The Making of Havant'.

These were originally published in the 1970s by the Havant Local History Group and have now been updated with many photographs.

Each volume has at least 80-pages and between them they cover over 60 different topics on the history of Havant from the 1850s.

BATTLE OVER CHICHESTER A talk by Andy Saunders The Battle of Britain raged in the skies around Chichester between 10 July and 31 October 1940 and during that time a great many enemy and RAF aircraft were brought down in the locality. Each incident, of course, had its own story of drama, tragedy, heroism and, sometimes, of humour.

Aviation historian, author and TV contributor, Andy Saunders, was also one of the founder members of Tangmere Military Aviation Museum in the early 1980s and is now Editor of the UK's best selling military history magazine: 'Britain at War'.

His talk, with related pictures, takes a look at a fascinating selection of incidents that occurred in the district, drawing on official reports, first-hand accounts and local folklore and anecdotal 'evidence' and delves into their background stories.

Emsworth Arts & Craft Market Shelley’s Creative Arts and Craft Market continues to provide a platform for local talented crafts people to sell a range of quality arts and crafts to local people Nd visitors.

The market offers a variety of stalls, some offering independent workshops bookable with the individual stallholders themselves.

Postcode Publications The Army Cadet Force The Army Cadet Force is about fun and friendship for 12 - 18 year olds in an exciting and carefully controlled environment.

Our aim is to inspire young people to achieve success in life with a spirit of service to their country and their local community, and to develop in them the qualities of good citizens. We do this by providing a variety of educational, challenging and adventurous opportunities.

Cadets sleep outside, get wet and muddy and often arrive home tired and dirty, but in doing so they learn new skills, improve their fitness and gain a selfconfidence and self respect.

Cadets are taught everything from basic survival skills to leadership training, using the national cadet star system which provides a military based syllabus combined with a full range of activities such as adventure training, community work, annual camp, sports and the opportunity to achieve nationally recognized first aid and BTEC qualifications. The ACF are also major participants in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, which is recognised by employers nationwide.

The ACF is not part of the Regular Army or Reserve forces, but a youth organisation lead by volunteers who wish to see all our young people achieve their aims and ambitions. We are always looking for new cadets and adult volunteers, as these are the life blood of the whole organisation.

Community Trafalgar Sail Project The Royal Navy needs your help! To celebrate the 250th anniversary of HMS Victory’s launch in 1765 and the 70th Anniversary of HMS Alliance’s launch we are inviting people to take part in an exciting community project. People are being asked to create squares measuring 6 X 4 inches inspired by HMS Victory and HMS Alliance using a variety of techniques such as knitting, embroidery and crochet. The squares will then form a community Trafalgar sail art installation which will be on display in summer 2015.

A special workshop will be held at the Makers Fayre, Petersfield in conjunction with the National Museum of the Royal Navy on the 25th April for people to come along to, learn new skills and see

some of our objects that link to embroidery and other handicrafts from the museum’s collections.

The Makers Fayre will be holding a knitting and embroidery workshop to create special squares for the Trafalgar sail art installation. The workshops are designed to accommodate everyone from beginners to the more experienced, to create a piece of history within a friendly encouraging environment. This thing called ‘cancer’ affects so many people. We two sisters, Jan and Jackie Hickman are fighting the cause, together we are using our crafty skills to raise money for the Breast Cancer Campaign. We have lost our grandmother, mother and other relatives to the disease and others are still fighting it. There are loads of charities but we felt we had to support one that was close to our hearts.

Postcode Publications Community orchard project launched

A community orchard on the Emsworth/Westbourne border was launched on Sunday at a cider-tasting evening.

More than 30 people gathered to launch the project to set up an orchard on new public open space next to the Redlands Grange housing development in Emsworth.

The idea of the project is to help preserve traditional fruit varieties, provide local environmentally-friendly produce and help residents get a bit closer to the earth.

Organisers Greening Westbourne, a local climate change action group, are hoping it will be a joint project to benefit both communities.

The plan is to get trees sponsored by local people – maybe in remembrance of a loved one, or to celebrate a birth.

The event was hosted by the White Horse inn in Westbourne, and included a cider-tasting competition.

Residents are being encouraged to attend the first meeting of an orchard steering group at 7.30pm on 21 April, at the Meeting Place in North Street, Westbourne.

Greening Westbourne chair Colin Carré said: "It was great to meet people interested in the idea, celebrate the launch and have some fun.

We now need to form a team to run the project, get fund-raising and get down to work. Anyone with useful skills is very welcome to join the 'core' team.

Making Space, a local craft organisation based in Havant, is a creative hub that has been busy over the last eight years raising it’s profile by running hundreds of craft workshops and hosting artist events. It is also the base for some of the area’s most talented makers.

WAG WALK ON HAYLING ISLAND As every year, there will be a sponsored dog walking event along the Hayling seafront to raise money for The Ark Animal Shelter in Stubbington.

Put an extra wag in your dog’s day and join us on Sunday 17th May at 10.30 am.

The starting point for the 2-mile walk will be at the Coastguard building on the seafront (opposite Bound Lane). We will walk to the Inn on the Beach and then return to the Hayling Island Light Railway Station where refreshments for the dogs and their walkers will be provided.

Don’t have a dog? Not to worry – everyone is welcome and the walk is a perfect opportunity to get out into the sunshine and join the fun. The sponsorship you and your dog raise will help us to care for unwanted, abandoned and all too often mistreated animals which have found a new home in The Ark.

Cycling – CTC Portsmouth The CTC cycling group organises rides around the Havant area. Recently we had a ride along the Salterns Way from Chichester to the Witterings. The ride was organised over two consecutive weeks in different directions.

For much of its route the Salterns Way from Chichester runs along safe and carfree paths, making it good for cycling.

Other parts of the route follow quiet lanes where there is little traffic. The route is extremely flat, ideal for easy cycling.

The Salterns Way runs quite close to Chichester Harbour. However, only a few stretches provide harbour-side views.

Perhaps the loveliest part lies between Apuldram and Birdham Pool. Pretty views extend across the fields. A pleasant cut through Salterns Copse gives way to a loop around Chichester Yacht Basin.

We paused at Chichester Yacht basin for coffee. Refreshed, we continued across the fields on specially designated cycling routes before ending up at Bracklesham Bay. There we enjoyed a well-earned lunch.

The return ride was a little muddy. Not a problem as it was soon washed off when the bicycles got home.

The following week we followed the route in the direction of Goodwood. We took coffee at Goodwood aerodrome, in the café at the old control tower.

This time the ride was more on the country roads. Drier and cleaner.

Within the group we had a couple of punctures, but as usual expert help was given. The wheels repaired. Bicycles and riders were accompanied back to the others who had ridden gently on, enjoying the countryside until we were all back together again.

The total distance ridden each week was about 50 miles, but obviously anyone who didn’t fancy this distance turned back in a small accompanied group after the coffee break.

NB: Portsmouth Cyclists' Touring Club is one of 250 local membership groups across the UK. Together they form the national Cyclists' Touring Club. Portsmouth CTC has some 200 active members from a wide area including Havant, Waterlooville and Emsworth. Portsmouth CTC has four rides per week in the summer and three in the winter. Sunday rides start from Cosham Library at 09.15 and cover 60 miles plus at a fairly swift pace. Wednesday and Saturday rides start from The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre, East Street, Havant at 09.15. They are more leisurely. Potential new members are welcome to join a ride-out.

Havant Rugby Club Havant Rugby Club were beaten 12 – 13

by Guildford RC in the London One South league on 28 March. It was their fourth defeat in six games. After the Guildford game Coach Will Knight reflected on the disappointment of a slow start to the season. He put that down to problems in getting the squad assembled. Once the full squad was available the team has had the strength in depth needed to compete in the league. With just two league games left, Knight expects Havant to finish in the top six. James Read has now returned to America, giving his replacement, George Sutton, the chance to play in the remaining games.

At the time of going to press, Havant’s final London One South games of the season were against Cobham RC at Hooks Lane on 11 April and away to Chobham RC on 18 April. The result at Chobham could decide whether Chobham RC, currently second in the league, are promoted.

Havant’s last match of the season is the Hampshire Cup Final. The Final will be

Postcode Publications MARTIN’S RADIO STATION IS NO FLASH IN THE PAN! Radio listeners in the Havant area had a pleasant surprise when they tuned in their FM radios w/c Sunday 8 March 2015. This new station was The Flash FM, 87.9 Mhz, a special station broadcasting from a portakabin next to The Curlew pub, near the town centre of Havant for a one week trial period. Local community station Angel FM started this way some years ago.

I caught up with station manager Martin Kirby (see pic) during his trial week and asked him what The Flash FM was all about. Martin told me all about his frustration in not being able to hear classic rock albums on the radio and how commercial stations only play top 40 “boy band” tracks. His vision is for The Flash to achieve a community radio station licence and to become a permanent feature of local FM broadcasting scene in Havant. Martin started listening to Radio Caroline and

other offshore pirate stations in the 1980’s as they played album based rock music. He wanted to get more involved so started his own land based pirate station, Freesound International which broadcast on Sundays from his home in South Hampshire on the 48 meter shortwave band.

Martin then teamed up with local radio legend Tony Smith who founded Angel FM which was to become one of Britain’s first licenced community stations. Angel began as a pirate and then had a number of RSL broadcasts before it eventually became a fully licensed community station. Angel FM, which targets older listeners with pre 1959 music, broadcasts from Havant on 101.0 FM and on DAB Digital Radio (South Hants 11C DAB). Martin then moved on and started The Flash as an internet station in 2012, playing classic rock albums, based in his own home in the Havant area. In 2013

he had his first RSL licence and broadcast for a week from the Churchillian pub, Portsdown Hill, overlooking Portsmouth. This broadcast was a great success raising much awareness of the station.

In December 2014, The Flash moved to its own premises, a portakabin next to The Curlew pub in Havant. The portakabin contains a full radio studio with mixing desk, CD players, record library, PCs and all you need to broadcast.

The Oaks Donate £4,487 to Rowans Hospice The Oaks, Havant Crematorium is donating £4,487 to The Rowans Hospice as part of its open day on Saturday 25 April, the result of a share of funds from a national recycling scheme to which the crematorium belongs.

Recycling of metals following cremation is only done with the written consent of each bereaved family. This metal is recycled by ICCM (Independent Community Care

Management Ltd) and the proceeds are shared between its members to donate to charity.

The Oaks open day on Saturday 25 April from 10am-2pm, is intended to demystify and dispel any myths about cremation and also give visitors the opportunity to tour the extensive grounds and find out about the conservation work undertaken in partnership with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust.

The Rowans Hospice, said: “The Rowans Hospice is delighted to have been nominated by The Oaks to receive the significant donation - the equivalent of supporting nine patients requiring in-patient care at The Rowans Hospice.

New Justice of the Peace Rotary Club of Havant Local man Edward Rees is appointed as one of the UK’s Youngest ever Magistrates

Edward Rees, 22, took his oath of office recently to become one of the UK’s youngest ever Justices of the Peace.

Winchester Crown Court saw Edward sworn in by H.H Judge Benett and Hampshire’s Vice Lord-Lieutenant Lindsay Fox at a ceremony attended by his family and fellow Magistrates Edward who grew up in the Bedhampton/Leigh Park area said: ‘’It’s a real honour to serve as a Magistrate. We should all try to give something back. I am proud of my working class roots, I went to Warblington School, Havant College and the University of Portsmouth. I am so passionate about local issues and it is a privilege to serve our community. I hope my appointment will inspire other young people to come forward and be actively involved in our community. There is a lot of responsibility with the role, I have the ability to take someone’s liberty away. However, I look forward to getting to work and I am ready to dispense justice and uphold the law’’

The club is actively seeking new members and part of this was the recent “Get To Know You” breakfast held at the Brookfield Hotel in Emsworth. This no obligation event was aimed at men and women of all ages who would enjoy the friendship of fellow members and very active social programme, whilst utilizing their business/ professional skills and experience to helping others. 14 guests took up the invitation with Shelagh, Stewart,Vicki and Nigel being the first to be inducted into full membership.

The charity was established in memory of Hannah Westbrook from Waterlooville who passed away aged 10, and these homes have been purchased to give families valuable time away from it all or if they have lost someone very special.

Over 400 balloons were released together to provide a colourful aerial display and during that weekend the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth displayed colours of the rainbow in memory of Hannah’s 21st Birthday.

Park wins 1st Place in Rock Challenge Heats.

Over 130 students from all year groups are said to be elated after grabbing 1st place at Rock Challenge earlier this month. On Wednesday 24th March, Park students rocked Portsmouth’s Guildhall. Not only did they walk away with 1st prize, they also won awards for Choreography, Drama Skills, Lighting Design, Most Entertaining, Best Performance Skills and Best Concept. Performing their 8-minute dance ‘Narration of Creation’, they will be returning to Portsmouth’s Guildhall for this year’s Rock Challenge Finals. “They are buzzing from the whole experience.” commented Ms Dare, Head of Performing Arts.

In February, Park students met The Duchess of Cambridge and Olympian Sir Ben Ainslie while painting a mural of the Solent at Camber Dock in Old Portsmouth.

Led by art teacher Mr Waterfield, students from six schools in the area have been painting the hoarding outside the construction site of the new America’s Cup yacht racing facility. Students were showing off their creative skills and learning new artistic techniques, guided by three street artists, the 1851 Trust and Strong Island.

Filmed by BBC South Today, Sir Ben posed for photographs with our students. Mr Waterfield said, the students, “...were fantastic ambassadors for the school.”

CRAFT BEERS - Enjoy your local brews PORTERS AND OTHER STOUT FELLOWS

Probably the best known beer brand in the UK is Guinness and it is the one beer than you can obtain in virtually every pub, club, off licence and supermarket. However it is a beer that has that “marmite” quality in that people tend to either really like it or intensely dislike it. It certainly has a very distinctive burnt, bitter taste that is not to everyone’s liking. It is a pity because Guinness is only one example of the family of dark beers known as stouts and porters.

These beers first started to be brewed in C18 London and by tradition they were popular with porters at the various London markets – hence the name porter. When stronger versions of porter were first brewed they became known as stout porters and eventually the name stout stuck. In Dublin, Arthur Guinness began brewing stout in 1759 on an industrial scale with much of his output being exported.

These export stouts were stronger in alcohol and more heavily hopped to ensure that they travelled well. They became known as Foreign Extra stouts and developed a strong following, particularly in West Africa and the Caribbean. In England porters continued to be brewed and in recent years there has been a revival of interest in this style of beer which is sweeter and less bitter that the Irish stouts.

Back in the 1960’s one of the biggest selling brands of beer was Mackeson which was a sweet stout, sometimes known as a milk stout. This brand is still available but is

increasingly hard to find. Other variations of the stout/porter family include Oatmeal stout (brewed with oatmeal and barley), Oyster stout (which was once brewed with the addition of oysters) and Imperial Stout which is a very strong brew (7% -13%) best sampled in small quantities at the end of a meal.

I am very fond of dark beers and have recently been around some of our local supermarkets and off licences trying out different types of stouts and porters. Here

are a few of my recommendations which should appeal to Guinness lovers as well as those of you who are not necessarily fans of very bitter beers. These beers should be drunk at around 10°-12° C and go well with grilled meats and roasts. Expect to pay from £2 -£2.50 for a 500 ml bottle of craft beer.

Hepworth Conqueror Sussex Stout. (4.5%) 500 ml - Brewed in Horsham, West Sussex.

This beer has a liquorice aroma and is sweeter and less bitter than an Irish stout.

Fullers London Porter (5.4%) 500 ml - Brewed by Fullers in London This beer was first brewed in 1996 but is based on an old recipe. It has a coffee aroma with chocolate, vanilla and coffee tastes coming through. This beer has won various awards and was one of CAMRA’s beers of the year in 2014.

Hopback Brewery Entire Stout (4.5%) 500 ml - Brewed in Salisbury This is a bottle conditioned “real ale” and can also be found on draught. It has been produced since 2001 and has a smoky autumnal aroma. On tasting there are chocolate, coffee and caramel undertones.

Meantime London Stout (4.5%) 500 ml - Brewed in London since 2008 This beer contains no roast barley and is softer in flavour than many other stouts.

This beer has tastes of coffee, caramel and vanilla. It might be the beer to convince someone who does not like Guinness that all stouts are not the same.

Meantime Chocolate Porter (6.5%) 330 ml - This is a Baltic style Porter with a full bodied taste. Chocolate is added at the maturation stage.

This is a complex beer well suited for drinking with cheese or it could go with a very rich beef casserole.

When shopping for beers do look out for products from local breweries and don’t be afraid to try something different for a change. I never cease to be amazed at the tremendous choice of beers available locally, yet so many people pile their trollies high with cases of bland, fizzy lagers.
