All this is now possible with a little imagination and the generous donation by Postcode Publications.

Mill Rythe Junior School on Hayling Island has been given a donation of £500 which is helping to fund a much needed replenishment of classroom reading books.

The school has purchased just over 400 books of different abilities and interests.

They range from non-fiction to fiction and larger illustrated, reading books. These are going to be a great resource for the children to promote their love and enjoyment of reading.

Every class room in the school now has a dedicated Reading Corner. For example there is a Kung Fu Panda Book corner in Year 5 which is decorated with bamboo.

Additionally Year 3 have a fishy themed Dive into Reading corner. The children are able to spend quality time in these special reading corners while enjoying some lovely new books.

They children are so happy and excited with these new additions and are extremely grateful.

Crematorium Scheme Donation The Oaks, Havant Crematorium, donated £3,333 to Naomi House Children’s Hospice, as a result of a share of funds from a national recycling scheme that the crematorium belongs to.

The Oaks, run by The Southern Cooperative - and has been open now for a year, belongs to a metals recycling scheme run by the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM). For us, Naomi House struck a chord for the support it gives to children, young people and their families.”

Roddy, who has served as President of the ICCM for the past year, added: “The Oaks crematorium was built to the highest environmental standards and we endeavour to offer a caring, professional service to everyone involved in funerals held here at The Oaks. The ICCM’s policy to donate funds to charity raised through this recycling scheme reflects our own ethos at The Southern Co-operative to make a

difference to the environment and communities we serve.” The Oaks was recently short-listed for a green building award at the CPRE Hampshire Awards.

THE GREEN DEAL

Don’t miss out on funding for home energy efficiency improvements Havant Borough Council is reaching out to residents to ensure they can take advantage of short-term grant funding to improve the energy efficiency of their homes.

A team of experts working on behalf of Havant Borough Council will be knocking on around 6,000 doors to explain the funding available.

The aim is to ensure households know about the Council’s Green Deal cashback offer for energy-saving measures, and have the information they need to take action.

All homeowners and private landlords are eligible to apply for the cashback offer, which can be used to fund insulation, double glazing and around £400 towards the cost of a new boiler.

As well as funding to help with the costs of installing energy efficiency measures, residents will reap the benefits of lower fuel

bills – typically £490 for a new gas boiler, £250 for loft insulation or £460 for solid wall insulation*.

Some householders will also receive a letter through their doors followed by a visit from the Council-approved canvasser, who will be carrying an official identity badge. The aim is to provide advice specific to each household and offer the opportunity for residents to talk one-to-one with an expert.

The scheme is already benefiting local residents with more than 100 residents expressing interest in the first couple of months.

Postcode Publications Off The Record get a makeover!

Off The Record, a service providing counselling, support and information for young people based in Leigh Park, received a makeover. Employees from Pfizer, based in New Lane Havant, spent a day painting the front of their building on Purbrook Way, Leigh Park. Local resident Bob Pratt and Pfizer employee says “It’s great to be able to help out Off The Record which works with young people locally. I had a great day working alongside other members of staff who I wouldn’t normally see on a day to day basis”.

The day was organised by Community First HEH’s Volunteer Service as part of The Employee Volunteering Scheme. Janet Duggan,Volunteer Co-ordinator says “It has

Abseil the iconic ArcelorMittal Orbit Structure The British Red Cross is looking for daring fundraisers to abseil the Orbit Sculpture.

The charity is assembling a team to abseil the Orbit at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Statford, London, and raise money for its humanitarian work. The ArecelorMittal Orbit stands at 376ft high and is Britain’s tallest sculpture. With views from the top spanning over 20 miles, you can see London landmarks such as The Shard, The Gherkin, Big Ben and Wembley Stadium. The sculpture was designed by

Turner Prize winner Sir Anish Kapoor so this is also a fantastic opportunity to see the sculpture up close.

You could be the first to take on this new challenge as the British Red Cross are offering charity places on 17 May 2015.

Hello, it’s me Giggles again, the out and abouter reporter for the CRRC . Exciting news! At last our barn has the new doors fitted. If you remember, my lovely staff did a sponsored sleep over in January in the freezing cold so that us out and abouters could be warm and cosy. We sleep in the hayloft and tell each other stories about how we came to be living at the rescue. Some of the stories are so so sad. Last week we had a large black and white girl cat brought in from Midhurst.

She was covered in appalling lumps which Mark, our vet, said were tumours. She had been microchipped and her name is Whiskey. Sadly the microchip number had not been updated so we cannot trace her owner. Always make sure your pet’s microchip details are up to date so that they can find their way home. My staff will care for Whiskey until we can find a kind caring person to look after her. She's a nice girl and about 10 years old.

Ollie Introducing Ollie! Ollie is a big and very handsome male cat who is around 8 and a half years old. He has been with us since the 16th March 2014 after his owner Ollie - my pet of the month sadly passed away.

He is white with a few grey smudges and a grey stripy tail. Ollie can be a really sweet cat but he does also have a naughty side. He is looking to find a new home with experienced cat owners that can give him all the love he deserves, as well as space to do his own thing. Ollie really needs someone to take a chance on him because he is not too happy that he has been with us so long. If you think you can provide Ollie with the home that he so deserves then please do not hesitate to contact us.

The South coast is alive with the sound of music! The fantastic Urban Vocal Group invites new members UVG is a free to access music charity for 11 to 18 year olds who sing contemporary arrangements of current tunes and pop classics, providing professional vocal tuition and performance opportunities regardless of experience.

The Charity was founded in 2008, initially based in Havant, by musician and teacher Charlie Fletcher whose aim was to create a community of young singers; offering a rare opportunity to bring young people from different areas and backgrounds together.

The ethos of the group is simple; to offer young people access to a safe, friendly and encouraging environment which nurtures learning through enjoyment and aspiration through achievement. Members of the group not only learn correct vocal technique and multi part harmonies but are also learn about the music industry, write songs, and record in professional studios. The group have performed at over 40 events including performances at the Southsea Show, the Wedgewood Rooms and the House of Commons and have recorded 15 original

songs.

UVG now has a base in The Guildhall in the heart of Portsmouth and are closer to achieving the dream of being the largest free to access music group for young people in the south. This is an exciting time for the charity and we are delighted that we can offer these opportunities to more young musicians, bringing them out of the bedroom into an environment where they receive professional tuition, build confidence and make music.

New members are being sought to join the Havant and Portsmouth groups. No experience is necessary, just a love for singing and having fun.

South Downs College recently hosted an informal Luncheon, inviting schools from the Havant Federation to celebrate their former students’ success.

Justin Baker, Deputy Head Teacher from Purbrook Park School, was so impressed that he even invited the students to return to their old school to talk to current pupils about their time at South Downs.

Students were joined by representatives from their previous schools, as well as staff members from the College to celebrate their achievements whilst at South Downs College.

Held in the award winning College Restaurant, the guests were treated to a luxury three course meal that was prepared, cooked and served entirely by the catering students.

The event was a real triumph, allowing the teachers to meet with students studying on both A level and Vocational programmes to hear their experiences and progress whilst at the College and also their plans for the future.

Warblington wow the crowds at ‘The Victorian Festival of Christmas’.

Year 9 Students Speak French at Fratton Park

We arrived at Fratton Park for our French trip at approximately 9.30 am. We met in the Players’ Lounge with other schools and received a briefing from the Director of the French trip.

Throughout the day we were going to create videos, we were also going to write and present a paragraph in French to convince a football player to join the Portsmouth Team. The reason why we were trying to convince the player was because he was French and he was presumed to be a

For the past month Warblington School’s Drama Club and Vocal Group have been rehearsing hard in preparation for The Victorian Festival of Christmas which takes place each year at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

Attracting 35,000 people each year the festival claims the title of the largest Christmas fayre in Europe. On Friday 28th November, twenty-nine Warblington students performed in front of thousands of visitors at the dockyard entrance, with the Warrior as a glorious backdrop.

The students showed great resilience throughout the day as they performed their repertoire a number of times, taking it all in their stride. Their renditions of classic Christmas carols and traditional Christmas scenes went

down a storm with visitors, who stopped to watch and show their appreciation.

To round off the day students were rewarded with a carousal ride and took part in a light procession: the finale of a fantastic day.

Miss Fuller and Miss Blundell would like to thank all the staff who helped with the preparation, especially Miss Withers for her prop making and much needed support on the day. Most importantly, we would also like to thank and congratulate the students who took part and showcased the talent that Warblington School has to offer.

We now look forward to preparing for the school show 2016.

We went around the stadium and recorded videos to be put on the internet and the video with the most views got free tickets to a Portsmouth Game. We then made presentations in French; two of Warblington’s groups gave their speech to the prospective footballer.

We spoke a lot of French and the day was really fun.

Postcode Publications Rowlands Castle Painting Society Eastney Ferry Point was the last official picnic/painting day out for members of the Rowlands Castle Painting Society, this concluded the outdoor meetings for the Summer. Many interesting locations have been visited and on the whole these artistic outings benefited from some exceptionally fine weather. Friendships are made in these settings and enhances the whole experience of belonging to a Society with like-minded people. The new term resumes on the 7th October with life-drawing in the Parish Hall, Links Lane, Rowlands Castle. Apart from life-drawing, there are workshops, evening demonstrations by professional artists, a great Christmas party, and an Art exhibition and Sale in the Spring. The meetings take place on Tuesday afternoons from 2pm to 4pm, the fortnightly evening demonstrations are from 7.30pm to 9,30pm. Non-members pay £2 entrance. All details can be found on the website.

NEW BOOK FROM HAYLING AUTHOR Louisa Heaton is the author of The Baby That Changed Her Life, published by Harlequin Mills and Boon and due to be released on January 1st, 2015. The story deals with surrogacy, but with a twist.

'Callie Taylor agrees to be a surrogate for her best friend, Lucas and his wife, but she doesn't count on falling pregnant just as Lucas's marriage ends. Soon Callie is developing feelings for Lucas that have nothing to do with her pregnancy hormones, but everything to do with his

Louisa is a local Hayling Island resident in Hampshire and this will be her first ever medical romance to be published. Her second book, His Perfect Bride? Follows in April 2015.

Louisa is married with four children and volunteers as a First Responder on Hayling Island as well as being the secretary for the group. A former English teacher, Louisa has taught English at South Downs College, Highbury College and The Hayling College.

Marketing Matters Workshop

It’s been a busy week for the Volunteer Service at Community First HEH, with two local Companies taking time out of their normal working week to support the community. Pfizer, based at New Lane Havant, sent a team of people to Malmesbury Lawn Day Care Centre based in Leigh Park. The volunteers spent time talking to the older people, delivered a quiz, baked cakes, gave hand massages and made cards. Carole Johnson, Site Leader for Pfizer says “This was my first opportunity to take part in a volunteering day with Community First HEH. It was an incredibly rewarding experience and we were all very impressed with the facilities and staff at Malmesbury Lawn. It was great to be able to work with the local community to help make a difference”.

Twelve employees from a local corporate organisation's Marketing Team, spent the day passing on their knowledge and skills to a variety of community groups and charities from across our region.

Janet Duggan,Volunteer Coordinator says “the focus of the Marketing Matters Workshop was for staff to give something back to the community by passing on their skills and expertise to community groups.

Groups attending received one-to-one support from the Marketing Team, passing on knowledge around how to improve their websites, social media awareness and branding”.

The Employee Volunteering Scheme works with businesses enabling them to share their skills with the voluntary and community sector. The scheme also has Team Challenges where community projects can benefit from a group of volunteers carrying out environmental tasks, garden make overs, decorating, befriending and so on. Variety is the spice of life... and singing No-one could accuse The Havant Pitchpipers of being a one trick chorus.

Over the last three months the ladies barbershop chorus have sung in the rain at Emsworth Show, performed at the Lord Mayor of Fareham’s charity “Last Night of the Proms” concert in Ferneham Hall,

Fareham, and competed at the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers annual convention in Harrogate.

Entertaining audiences ranging from just a few (boy did it rain at Emsworth Show) to over 1000 in Harrogate International Centre, the chorus have sung (and sort of

danced to) a mixture of traditional barbershop melodies, modern pop tunes, classical favourites and special arrangements, going to show how versatile they are.

Panto time is here again – oh yes it is!

Couch to 5K

As part of your New Years Resolution, have you thought about running?

Couch to 5K is returning in 2015 to assist residents in improving their physical and emotional well-being and all they need is a pair of trainers.

Many people turn to running to keep fit and stay active. To help encourage more people to get off the couch and keep fit Havant Borough Council, in Partnership with Victory Athletics Club and Innovations Fitness, are organising more ‘Couch to 5K’ beginner running schemes in 2015.

The nine week course, funded through a Health Grant from Hampshire County Council, is ideal for those who have no previous running experience. It enables participants to gradually make the transition from walking to being able to run 3 miles by

the end of the programme. With an emphasis on fun, socialising and making steps to being healthy the course is perfect for absolute beginners.

The nine week course is available to anyone over the age of 18 at a cost of just £15 per person.

Councillor Yvonne Weeks said : “We are delighted with the success of this scheme and excited to be delivering more courses in 2015 with the hope of inspiring people to become active.”

Four courses ran in 2014 which were very popular and many people who took part are now regularly running. Including Elle from Bedhampton who on completion of the course ran the Great South Run in October and has now entered the Reading Half marathon in March, she said: “Couch to 5K has been such a massive help in improving my fitness and my social life!”

The first courses in 2015 will start from Emsworth Park on Tuesday 6th January and Horndean Technology College on Wednesday 7th January.

Food and Wine Bargain wines for post Christmas saving

We all know that December can be an expensive month. The money we spend on the high street buying gifts for our friends and family seems to increase year after year.

Not to mention the amount spent on extra food, goodies we would not normally eat during the rest of the year.

The same can be said for wine and other bottled delights. How much Baileys do we drink at Christmas compared with other months? Sherry sales also increase as Grandmas’ around the country enjoy a few extra glasses. We also spend that little bit more on wine as we treat ourselves to something special for the festive lunch.

Christmas is a time for treating ourselves and others, and why not? We work hard the whole year so we deserve it.

But then January arrives. The holidays and festivities go and the office and hard work arrive once more. It’s this time when we have to tighten our belts a little and revert back to our normal eating and drinking habits. But that does not mean we have to drink cheaper wines which are of lesser quality.

On an average priced bottle of wine the tax makes up 52% of the overall price. The duty is £2.05 per bottle plus VAT on top of that. With this in mind, finding bargain bottles should in theory be difficult. ‘What makes a bargain wine a bargain?’ It’s a question I often get asked along with ‘is a wine that cost £50 significantly better than a wine that cost £5?’ The answer I usually give is if you prefer the £5 bottle better than the £50 bottle then no its not.

Wine is all about personal preference.

Its good to go for different styles and explore different wines but we generally know what styles we like. Remember one thing, if you like the wine then its a good one.

Supermarkets tend to be the obvious place to start looking for good value wines.

They have the buying power to push prices down as they buy in bulk. Big brand names will usually dominate the shelves and the discounts. But don’t take to much notice of these deals and if you look beyond these names you will find some classic wines from some fantastic smaller producers.

Own label wines are also a good bet.

These tend to be from those smaller producers who take pride in their wine making. Here are some suggestions that you may like to try.

Christmas Apple Tart Tartin To help you enjoy this festive season I have created this new recipe which is a great alternative to Christmas pudding or mince pies.

It has no added sugar and all the sweetness comes from using eating apples for the filling along with sultanas, raisins apricots and flaked almonds. For a more decadent dessert add a couple of tablespoons of rum or brandy into the filling. Prepare pastry, cover with cling film and leave in the fridge for at least 30 minutes

Ingredients For pastry: 100g butter 200g plain flour Pinch of salt 7 or 8 teaspoons cold water For filling; 1 kg eating apples preferably gala or similar 50g sultanas 50g raisins 50g chopped apricots 25g flaked almonds 1 tsp cinnamon 3 tbsp apricot jam Method 1. Pre heat fan oven to 180˚C. 2. Sift flour into the food processor add a pinch of salt. Cut butter into small cubes and gently stir into the flour. Pulse the mixture until it resembles bread crumbs.

Do not over process.

3. Add 7 to 8 teaspoons of cold water to the bread crumb mixture and pulse until it forms a ball. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

4. Flour table top, rolling pin and hands with plain flour. Place dough ball in centre and roll out gently until pastry is the size of a 24cm loose bottom pastry tin.

5. Carefully place pastry dough into the tin and prick with a fork. Cover with a sheet of greaseproof paper and pour some baking beans on top. Bake in the middle of the oven for approximately 6 minutes.

Remove baking beans and greaseproof paper, then bake for a further 6 minutes.

Remove from the oven.

6. Peel and core all the apples. Take 4, roughly chop then place into microwaveable dish adding a small amount of water and cook on high for at least 15 minutes or until soft. If required, lightly puree using hand blender. Leave to cool. Soak the remaining apples in water until ready to use, squeeze a few drops of lemon juice, into the water, to stop them going brown.

7. Add the raisins, sultanas, chopped apricots and flaked almonds to the pureed apple and add cinnamon, stir until fully combined.

8. Place apricot jam into a microwaveable dish with a little water and cook on high for a minute or until heated through.

9. Take soaked apples and slice thinly.

10. Pour apple and fruit mixture into pastry shell. Arrange thinly sliced apples in concentric circles starting from the outside and working your way towards the centre. Brush heated apricot jam on the sliced apples.

11. Bake in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown.

Shape pastry

Place peeled and roughly cooked apples in a microwaveable dish with a small amount of water

Prepare pastry for baking- after pricking, place parchment paper and cover with baking beans

Mix pureed apples with mixed fruit and fill partially cooked pastry case

Arrange apples slices in concentric circles and glaze with heated apricot jam

Enjoy your baked tart with whipped or pouring cream

Havant & District Citizens Advice Bureau Q &A My rented home is damp – does my landlord have to do something about it?

Damp is a common problem which many tenants experience when renting accommodation. There are several types of dampness: • rising damp, which happens when moisture travels up from the ground through the masonry to the height of about one metre • penetrating damp, which happens when water penetrates into the fabric of a building from outside to inside, for example, because of a leaking downpipe • construction damp, where dampness is caused by a problem in how the property was designed • condensation dampness, which generally happens when a property can't deal with normal levels of water vapour because of a lack of insulation, ventilation or heating, or a combination of all of these things.

As a tenant, you have the right to have the structure of your home kept in good repair by the landlord. This includes some of the installations in the home such as heating and hot water systems.You will often be responsible yourself for repairs to internal decoration and for minor repairs such as a blocked sink. Details about repairs are usually set out in a written tenancy agreement that describes the landlord's and tenant's responsibilities. If you do not have a tenancy agreement the law may still give you some basic rights. However, you should always check your housing status before you complain about housing conditions, as some landlords try to evict tenants who

wish to enforce their legal rights to repair.

When you have decided that your repair should be done by the landlord, you must tell them about the repair that is needed.You should write out a description of the problem and collect evidence such as photographs, a report from environmental health officers, and medical reports if the disrepair is affecting your health or the health of someone in your household.

If the landlord still fails to carry out the work you could consider contacting the Environmental Health department at your local authority, or you could take the landlord to court. If your landlord is a housing association or a private landlord, then the local authority may be able to force them to take action. If you are a tenant of the local authority itself, then you should make a complaint using the authority’s complaints procedure.

If the dampness in your home is harmful to your health or is a nuisance, then it may be a statutory nuisance. Where there is a statutory nuisance, the local authority may be able to force your landlord to deal with the problem. Or the dampness could be a risk to your health or safety and therefore a hazard under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS).

You should carry on paying your rent while you try to get the repair work done, as your landlord may try to evict you if you have rent arrears. Copyright Citizens Advice. THE RIDE OF YOUR LIFE COULD SAVE A LIFE Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance launch new overseas challenge Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) are delighted to announce that their hugely popular Kilimanjaro climb, taking place in February 2015, has already raised in excess of £100,000 for the charity.

As a result, they have just launched their new overseas challenge for 2016 and are hoping to repeat the successful formula.

In February 2016 the charity will be supporting a group of intrepid supporters on a 450 km cycle ride through South East Asia, across two of the world's most beautiful countries;Vietnam and Cambodia.

The eleven day trip will give participants the opportunity to push their limits whilst gaining a unique insight into two of the world’s ‘must see’ destinations. The going will be

tough, and the group will be cycling long distances over several days in a tropical climate, coping with tired legs, lots of bugs and the occasional downpour.

Community and Corporate Fundraiser James King commented ‘We have already begun to receive our first ‘sign ups’ for our Vietnam/Cambodia 2016 challenge.

There is a huge amount of goodwill towards HIOWAA in our local community, and people will challenge themselves in any way they can in order to help us keep the Air Ambulance flying. This challenge is not for the faint hearted, but we will be here to support you all of the way ’For James, who has recently battled ill health, this is a very personal challenge. James is determined to

complete the 405km trek and to raise money for a cause that very dear to his heart because he was once rescued by the Air Ambulance following a cycling accident.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance flies seven days a week and attends an average of two to three missions a day, many of them life saving. The charity receives no government, statutory or national lottery funding for operational purposes, and is entirely dependent on gifts received from members of the public, companies and grant-making bodies to keep the Air Ambulance flying.

The Portsmouth Players are bringing a taste of the West End to the King’s Theatre, Southsea in February with a production of Hairspray, starring West End star and Portsmouth native, Jack Edwards.

Hairspray is the story of teenager Tracy, whose dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance programme.

She manages this and becomes an overnight sensation, meeting a variety of colourful characters on the way.

As well as being a fun and energetic show, it’s also a powerful commentary on the social injustices faced by minorities in 1960s America as well as society’s attitude to the overweight.

Anna Tapper

Havant Academy student Anna Tapper has had an unforgettable 2014 winning the Derek Lamont Rotary Young Person of the Year Award for excelling at Sports Acrobatic Gymnastics and academically with outstanding GCSE results.

Anna,16, had a hectic schedule but managed to do gymnastics training six

days a week and three days of coaching together with her GCSE studies. Anna’s dedication has enabled her to compete in international gymnastics competitions and her efforts have been recognised with the 2014 Young Person of the Year Award.

“I didn’t know anything about it (the nomination) as Ms. Hayes put me forward,” explained Anna. “I was shocked and delighted when I found out I had won the award.

“My parents persuaded me to do gymnastics when I was about seven and I didn’t want to stop as I enjoyed it so much. I guess they saw potential in me.”

Havant Academy produced its best ever results and Anna was a key part in that, achieving 13 GCSEs A*-C including 7 A* grades. She now plans to continue her studies at Havant College and follow her passion for gymnastics.

Asked on her long term ambitions, Anna replied: “It would be nice to be involved in coaching (gymnastics) and judging competitions.”

Leah Harding

Havant Academy Year 9 student Leah Harding is only 14 but her passion and talent for sailing are already apparent and she had the honour of being selected to be

part of the Ocean Youth Trust South Voyage.

Leah sailed to Poole, the Isle of Wight, Lymington, Gosport and Southampton in high seas to complete the five-day voyage, from 5th-10th May 2014, and enjoyed the experience so much that she is already planning to do the same voyage next year.

“Last year I was selected for sailing on a small boat and this year I was chosen for the big boat on the Ocean Youth Trust South Voyage,” explained Leah.

“It was five nights in total. The weather conditions were fine. There were some rough seas but that is good for sailing!

“I will do the same voyage next year. It is a good chance to meet new people and I have lots of friends on the boat.”

The school holidays provide Leah with time to follow her passion for sailing and she harbours hopes of one day becoming a ‘bosun’ – the Senior Deckhand who is able to take on extra responsibilities.

Downton Abbey voted the ideal place to live As Downton Abbey returns to our TV screens it seems that people in our area not only love the period drama – but would love to live in the castle where the series is set.

Research from five star housebuilder Barratt Homes reveals that almost a fifth of people would choose Downton Abbey as the ideal place to live – way ahead of the prospect of living in streets made famous by Emmerdale, EastEnders or Coronation Street.

In fact the One Poll study revealed that

more people would like to live in the jungle than in Albert Square.

Barratt’s Michelle Storer said the results reinforce the importance of location when it comes to choosing a new home.

“People are discerning when it comes to choosing where to live and it’s no surprise that the glamour of a castle or the beauty of a rural location came out as the most popular,’’ said Michelle.

However Michelle says what while Downton Abbey may sound ideal – it

doesn’t fulfil all priorities for those really looking for a new home.

In addition to the location she said the proximity of schools and colleges are also top of homeowners’ minds when considering a move with 34 per cent of home buyers citing this as a top priority.

The survey also revealed that while families consider good educational facilities a must, buyers also want to be close to local amenities and their work.

Michelle said the survey showed that today’s homebuyers are more selective and

are looking for a complete package when purchasing a home.

We all had starters selected from an extensive range of dishes – I had Tom Kha a lovely soup with coconut milk spices and a hint of lemon grass. My colleague really has a palette for hot and spicy dishes and he choose the famous Tom Yum soup. Our lady companions choose Muek Tord (deep fried squid) and Po Pia Tord (crispy fried spring rolls).

There is a huge range of main course dishes – pork, chicken, prawn, beef, duck, seafood and vegetarian. We were really spoilt for choice!! My colleague had Pad Ka Prao Thailand street style prawn stir fry I had duck stir fry called Pad Nam Man Hoi and our ladies had Pad Khing which is julienned chicken, stir fried in ginger with mushrooms, and Seua Rong Hai or Weeping Tiger, which is marinated rib eye steak in chef’s home made special sauce, all with a selection of vegetable, rice and noodle side dishes this was a true feast. This was my first venture into Thai food and I would certainly recommend it, every dish was delicious and superbly cooked by Suraj and his team and I look forward to working my way through the extensive menu!

In November, members of OmniArts Performing School combined cosplay, drama and a joint love of Doctor Who together.

They brought a devised scene based around characters from the TV show Doctor Who to life, to give Radley, aged 8, an extra special treat at his birthday party.

Radley is a member of the sensory dance group run by Becki Short – Director of OmniArts Performing School – at Havant Leisure Centre. After using some music from the show in the sensory dance lessons at his request, Becki showed John, Radley's dad, some photos of herself and Josh (an OmniArts member and volunteer for sensory dance) in cosplay as The

A little while later John asked if Becki and Josh would make an appearance at Radley's birthday party to make it extra special, as it was going to be his first “proper” party. After characters had been chosen, a short script was created and costumes were found, ready to help bring Radley's favourite characters to life.

“The performance went fantastically – I'm so proud of all the members, and so pleased that we were able to help make Radley's birthday that little extra special.” John, Radley's dad has said that everyone really enjoyed the whole party, and the continued on page 20...

Doctor Who appearance was a fantastic addition, making Radley's first birthday party a massive hit with everyone there – kids and adults!

“Radley had his first birthday party with loads of kids attending. Everyone said it was amazing as there was a huge softplay area and a big party tea.

The Finale to the massive celebration of Radley's 8th birthday party was his dance class teachers, Becki and Josh, springing a big surprise on Radley by turning up with friends to perform a Doctor Who scene, which the 50 to 60 children and adults loved. What a great party which was made extra special, as many of the children have special needs.”

Although the Doctor Who appearance was a treat for Radley and all the other children at the party, it was also a great opportunity for the aspiring actors who performed to expand their experiences and learn more about different types of performances.

Lee Backhouse, aged 16 says: "Thanks to joining OmniArts, I've had some great performance opportunities and to do something like this, combining two things I love, Doctor Who and performing, as well as putting a smile of those kids’ faces was brilliant and I'd do it again in a heartbeat."

Emily Joy, aged 18 says: “Since going to OmniArts, I have had amazing chance to do lots of different performing opportunities

which I love as I feel passionate about drama. Being a character from Doctor Who and surprising Radley for his birthday was so much fun as I love Doctor Who and it gave me a chance to be a character I would never thought of being. I've always loved what OmniArts does as a school and felt that this was a lovely chance to use my hobby with the skills that I learned through OmniArts to give Radley a fantastic birthday surprise.”

Stuart Wheeldon, aged 25 says: "OmniArts has given me an outlet for my creative side, from improving my hair and makeup skills to giving me the opportunity to act at Radley's birthday party. Something I thought I would never have the chance to do, let alone the confidence to do it."

Do visit our local vinyl record shops in Havant and Emsworth. They are both run by people who are very knowledgeable about music and like to talk about record collecting. If you do have a collection of old vinyl records why not consider getting a turntable and reliving those great sounds form the past. If you already have the music on CD then our record shops may be able to buy some of the better records – otherwise consider donating them to the various charity shops in the Borough, most of which now sell LPs. Call to action HAVANT and Waterlooville hearing centres are calling on residents to donate their old hearing aids to help children in developing nations.

Specsavers Hearing Centres in Havant and Waterlooville are collecting donations for Sound Seekers, a charity dedicated to helping people, especially the young, who are deaf or hard of hearing in the world’s poorest communities.

It is hoped the donated devices, when reconditioned and reprogrammed, will help create a brighter future for those living with hearing loss in the developing world.

Clive Harrod, hearcare director at Specsavers Hearing Centres in Havant and Waterlooville, says: ‘Living in the UK, we are extremely lucky to have access to such robust hearing healthcare programmes.

Oversees, charities like Sound Seekers are providing vital care to those who are not as

Sound Seekers works in partnership with local organisations and institutions in developing nations to deliver sustainable and cost-effective projects. Their work aims to advance the understanding of deaf people’s needs and improve their access to health services, education, and social

support, while enabling people to avoid or overcome the effects of hearing loss or deafness.

Specsavers is also supporting the Sound Seekers Hear in Malawi campaign to raise money for children and adults with hearing loss in Malawi. All donations will be matched by the UK government, enabling the charity to help twice as many people in need. Postcode Publications A LITTLE LIGHT READING AND DRINKING By David Harris, Freelance writer One of the reasons why we enjoy such a rich variety of real beers in Britain today is due to the efforts of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) which was founded back in 1971 with the aim of ensuring that cask conditioned ales would be available in local pubs. CAMRA has grown to be a big organisation with over 165,000 members. Every year CAMRA publish “Good Beer Guide” and I have recently received a copy of the 2015 edition (CAMRA £15.99). This mighty book (nearly 1000 pages) lists over 4500 pubs which have been recommended by CAMRA members. It also lists the 1,000+ breweries that now operate across the UK. There are also chapters on how beer is brewed, beer festivals and styles of beer.

I anxiously turned to the Hampshire section and was pleased to learn that both the Old House at Home, South Street and the Robin Hood, Homewell were listed for Havant. Under Emsworth, the Coal Exchange, South Street gets a mention.

There are of course many other pubs in the Borough who serve real ale. For a full

listing try the website www.whatpub.com which seems to confirm that almost every pub in the area serves at least one cask conditioned real ale.

Under the section about Breweries, Havant Brewery is listed as a 5 barrel brewer with four main types of beer which are available at some local pubs and clubs and also in bottle form.

Emsworth Brewery is also listed as a 2.5 barrel plant. They produce three main brews which are mainly sold in bulk to local drinkers. They recently exhibited at the Emsworth Food Fortnight.

If you are interested in beer and regularly visit pubs across the country then the Good Beer Guide is an essential. If you are looking for a present for the beer drinker in your life then I am sure that this publication would be widely appreciated.

http://shop.camra.org.uk/books.html for a full listing. I can recommend “Beer Select-opedia” by Michael Larson (CAMRA) £12.99 which is a very useful publication for people who enjoy trying different types of beer.

This book lists over 90 styles ranging from well know brews such as Pale Ale and Best Bitter to the more esoteric drinks such as Russian Stouts, Belgian Red Ales and American Pumpkin Ales. For each style the author gives a detailed description of the beer and makes some recommendations of particular beers to try. It is divided up into sections on British and Irish Ales; Continental Ales; Continental Lagers and American Beers. He also tries to make suggestions as to which food would best complement each beer. This book really fills a gap in the market for the person who wants to try specialist beers but is unsure of what to expect. Not all of the styles of beers are to be found in your local convenience store but you may be surprised at the variety to be found in major supermarkets. The book is also a must if

you are planning a holiday in Belgium which is the spiritual home of the beer drinker. The sheer variety of styles of beer produced in that country is just overwhelming.

Another beer book which I enjoying browsing is “1,001 Beers you must try before you die” by Adrian Tierney-Jones (Quintessence Editions 2013) £20. This is more of a coffee table (or should it be beer table?) book in that it comprises of a full description, tasting notes and pictures of 1001 beers from around the world: Anyone for a pint of Antares Argentinian Imperial stout or perhaps a refreshing glass of Tirana, the well-known Albanian pilsner? Whilst only some of the 1001 beers are available in the UK it does make interesting reading and again would make a good present for a beer drinker.

Do ask for a local real ale if you are visiting a pub or when shopping in the supermarket do not just buy the usual brand of mass marketed lager – try something different for a change. Beers are available in a wide variety of styles and tastes, many of which compliment many different foods and will add to your enjoyment of a meal.

Local mum helps broaden appeal of Youth Sailing at HISC

Anne Marie Wood (below) from Hambrook near Emsworth, and her team of helpers have been instrumental in making youth the largest growing section at Hayling Island Sailing Club. Under Anne Marie, youth sailing at the Sandy Point club has been broadened with the introduction of a number of fun and informal formats designed to get children on the water and enjoying themselves.

The HISC Youth section had always been a strong and vibrant part of the sailing club, particularly in the youth racing scene, but when Anne Marie Wood took over as Rear Commodore Youth in 2012 she decided to broaden its appeal.

She set up a progression programme for children that would suit all abilities and enable them to sample sailing in a more relaxed, fun and informal manner; an ideal route for those not keen to embark on the racing programme but wanting to be part of the active youth section..

One of the first initiatives Anne Marie had set up in 2008 was ‘SEALS’ which uses the warm, shallow waters of the lagoon at high tide to provide a safe and fun environment for the youngest children to mess about and gain confidence on the water. The formation of ‘SEALS’ coincided with a surge in family membership at HISC. It relies on fun and informal parent-led activities using any type of craft including dinghies, paddle boards, kayaks, canoes and windsurfers with the aim of getting children on the water for the first time. Over 100 children now regularly attend these sessions, held over a couple of hours during high tides in June, July and August.

The ‘SEALS’ initiative has continued to grow and as the group gets more involved and confident the activities include picnics to East Head, sailing football, trips to see the seals in the harbour, pirate adventures, treasure hunts, camping weekends and youth cruises.

Stepping down recently after six years on the HISC Youth Committee and the last two as Youth Rear Commodore, Anne Marie commented, “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed getting more children on the water and learning to sail. Having grown up at the club and been a member all my life, I strongly believed that it was time to give something back to the club”

Firstly I would like to wish all the readers and editorial team at Postcode Newspapers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. All at HWFC appreciate the support of Ben Swallow scoring the local a wonder goal at community and are Westleigh Park delighted with the growing relationship between the Football Club and our local paper.

As is the norm during the festive season the Vanarama Conference South attempt to arrange as many ‘local matches’ as possible. We host Gosport Borough on Boxing Day with the reverse fixture on New Year’s Day at Privett Park. This year’s fixtures have an extra special twist about them, with both teams, sitting in the play-off positions.

Draws will do neither side much good. This is the point in the season where staying competitive as the matches come thick and fast is vital. So with big crowds expected for both matches it would be a good time to pop along and witness Non-League Vanarama Conference Football at its best.

Spare a thought for the players of the parttime game at this time of the year. At a time when most of us are relaxing and eating and drinking too much of everything, they are living like monks. This year we have matches on Saturday 20th December, away at Hemel Hempstead, followed by the visit of Gosport on Boxing Day at Westleigh Park (Friday). Then on the 28th (Sunday) we travel to Bishops Stortford in Essex before finishing at Gosport on New Year’s Day. Besides the football there is plenty of partying and music at the club’s ‘Westleigh’ rendezvous. On Saturday 20th December the Michael Buble Tribute Act, is back by popular demand. This is a superb night out for the Postcode readers. On New Year’s Eve there is the customary end of year party. Full details are on the Official HWFC Website and the Westleigh Website.

Padel is typically played in doubles on an enclosed glass court about half the size of a tennis court. The height of the ball being served must be at or below the waist level. The sport was invented in Acapulco, Mexico, by Enrique Corcuera in 1969. It is currently most popular in Hispanic American countries such as Argentina and Mexico as well as in Spain, although it is now beginning to spread rapidly across Europe and other continents.

Padel Pro Tour (PPT) was the professional Padel Circuit which was created in 2005 as a result of the agreement between a group of organizers of matches of Padel and Association of Professional Players of Pádel (AJPP) and the Spanish Feminine Association of Pádel (AFEP).

Nowadays, the most important padel circuit is World Padel Tour (WPT), which started in Spain though it has already reached international expansion. In 2014 WPT has travelled to Portugal, Argentina and Dubai.

The sport's popularity along the Costa del Sol in southern Spain has exposed it to a large number of British visitors, leading to an increased popularity of the sport in the UK and a launch of the UK Padel Federation in 2011 www.britishpadel.co.uk . The courts are mainly in London, But the Rye Tennis and Squash Club in East Sussex has a padel facility.

HERE COME THE GIRLS When the Junior Girls recently played with the Ladies Section at Hayling Island Golf Club, the youngsters were more than able to hold their own, with some of the talented girls equalling, or even out-driving the more experienced ladies.

Despite only having played golf a short while, some of the girls now have 36 handicaps (or less) and play off the ladies red tees. What’s more the girls thoroughly enjoy playing 9 holes on a Saturday afternoon alongside the boys. It just proves that when you start young, golf’s easier to learn.

Golf’s also known to help with basic

development skills such as hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness, as well as building confidence and teaching self-discipline.

More importantly, as the girls say, “it’s fun”.

Hayling Island Golf Club are hoping to encourage more girls into the sport following their taster session in October which was specifically for young girls (aged 5 and above).

Portsmouth Cyclists Touring Club

Portsmouth Cyclists' Touring Club is one of 250 local membership groups.

Together they form the National Cyclists' Touring Club, an organisation that has a total membership of around 60,000.

Portsmouth CTC has some 200 active members drawn from a wide area including Waterlooville and Emsworth and as far afield as Chichester, Gosport, Fareham and Petersfield.

The Club’s activities include weekly ride-outs, Clubroom presentations and talks during the winter, cycle tours in UK and abroad, liaising with local councils to improve cycling infrastructure and facilities and promoting cycling in the local community. The Club also publishes a quarterly magazine – ‘The Pedal’.

Portsmouth CTC has four rides per week in the summer and three in the winter. Sunday rides start from Cosham Library at 09.15 and cover 60 miles plus at a fairly swift pace. Wednesday and Saturday rides start from The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre, East Street, Havant at 09.15. These rides go at a more leisurely

pace (although if numbers permit the rides often spilt into faster and slower groups) with a coffee stop after about 15 miles.

Some riders return to Havant from the coffee stop and there is always someone to accompany any newcomers back to the start point. The others continue to a lunch stop and a round trip usually of between 40 to 60 miles. Lunch stops are normally near cafes or pubs. A few riders, particularly in summer, take a picnic lunch. Each ride has a leader that has planned the route and stopping venues, all published well in advance in the magazine and on the Club web site. Thursday evening rides start at 7.00pm from The Spring at Havant during the summer and visit a local pub after a ride of about 5 to 10 miles.

For members occasionally wanting less challenging rides, additional shorter rides are provided on some Saturdays and Wednesdays, starting at 09.30 from The Spring at Havant, and wherever possible, published in advance in the magazine or on the Club web site.

newcomers to the rides and members are happy to have non-members accompany them for a couple of trips. If they then want to continue they would be expected to become a CTC member.

In the winter there are fortnightly talks or presentations at the Bedhampton Social Hall.

The Portsmouth CTC has an Easyride event starting from The Spring at Havant on Wednesday 21 January at 09.30. The gentle ride will stop at the Woodmancote Pub, near Westbourne, for ‘elevensies’ and readers are very welcome to join the ride with about a dozen members and discover the joys of social cycling with Portsmouth CTC. Havant & Waterlooville FC Hawks inform young striker JJ Hooper who has been scoring freely this season has had problems with a hamstring and as a precaution was rested for a little period at the beginning of December. JJ’s excellent progress has already attracted the interest of league clubs and various scouts have been following his progress.

Hawks captain and goalkeeper Ryan Young has also been in fine form and probably the most consistent performer so far season with a series of top class displays.

The defence in front of him has been solid continuing the good form from last season.

The January Transfer Window is nearly upon clubs. Although this can be an opportunity to pick up players from professional clubs looking to offload players or give developing players the chance of first team football, it can also be a double edged sword for successful smaller clubs like Hawks. With a wealth of young talent being nurtured by the club, when the professional clubs come knocking it is difficult to stand in the way of talented young players wanting to further their careers.

Hawks Academy side sat unbeaten at the top of the Football Conference Youth Alliance early in December, having won seven of their eight games, scoring 59 goals in the process and conceding only nine.

Portsmouth Football Club The side has continued to do well at home but seems unable to get it right at the moment away from Fratton Park. It is evident that the players are comfortable with the way they play their home games, but away from home they seem uncertain and disjointed. To perform well players must be clear as to what is expected of them individually and as a team and capable of delivering. It may be therefore, that more clarity is needed on the requirements for away games and if so they will have to work it out with the coaching staff in training.

Rugby London League 1 South side Havant has recovered well from a slow start to the season and have climbed away from the bottom to a more comfortable middle table position. Much of the credit for the improved performance rests with Steve Cruddas who rejoined the Club at the beginning of the season and has played a key role in helping the team move up the league. Steve is already well known to the Club’s supporters from his earlier period with the Club. After returning from a two year period away Steve soon played his 200th game for the Club when they played local rivals Basingstoke on 15

November. Steve is only the fifth Havant player to reach the 200 league appearances milestone, joining Dave Jones, Liam Davenport, Grant Morris and Dylan Raubenheimer.

Havant RFC has been awarded a Rugby Football Union grant from its Transforming Social Spaces Grants for the 2015 Rugby World Cup which is being staged in England and Wales. The grant will be used to enhance the club’s social facilities and provide a resource to be used by the local community.

Club Chairman Jon Mangnall said “We are delighted that our project has been chosen as a recipient for a grant. We will now have some of the best facilities in the area that local people from Havant, Waterlooville and the surrounding villages can use. The 2015 Rugby World Cup will inspire a new wave of people of all ages to become involved in rugby and this RFU investment will help our club to be even better equipped to welcome newcomers”

Congratulations Steve Cruddas Hockey Havant Hockey Club’s season is progressing well in South Premier Division 1.

They are right in the promotion picture under coach Ady Adams and his assistant Steve (Nellie) Lawson. The team has a blend of experience and youth. Sandeep Singh is providing quality at penalty corners, Polish

player Tomaz Nowicki is adding pace and the forwards are scoring plenty of goals. The team are showing strength and resilience and a determination not to be beaten. At the end of November they were lying in second place and unbeaten after eight games having won seven and drawn the other.

Sailing Sophie Weguelin and Eilidh McIntyre, the Team 3,2,1 that Postcode has been following in their build up to qualification for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, finished in second place to take silver in the 470 Class at the Sailing World Cup Final held off Lulu Island, Abu Dhabi from 27-30 November. Sophie and Eilidh have each suffered setbacks in their short campaign together. It was Eilidh initially who in a training accident received a serious injury to her finger which required surgery.

The pair had again been sidelined from training and competition initially for six months as Weguelin underwent treatment for a deep vein thrombosis. But after a testing three months, Abu Dhabi provided a silver lining for Sophie and Eilidh. With Weguelin gaining the all clear from specialist medics three months into her treatment and just two weeks before the Abu Dhabi event, the pair made the most of their competitive return to win the medal race on the final day by 21 seconds and elevate themselves into the medal spots after starting the day in fifth.

Postcode Publications Angel Crowned Havant Rotary Young Chef of the Year Thirteen year old Angel Harmer a pupil at Hayling College is the winner of the Havant Rotary Club Young Chef of the Year Competition, held on Saturday 22 November.

Competing against five other aspiring chefs aged 13/14 from Park Community School and her own college, Angel was awarded top marks by judges World Master Chef James Parson, Head Chef at the Langstone Hotel, Hayling Island, Amanda Thomas, Manager, Brookfield Hotel, Emsworth and Helen Kinbell, former Head of Year at Horndean College of

Technology.

The six youngsters were given a maximum budget of £13 and one and a half hours to produce their two course meal.

They were complimented by the judges for their high standard of preparation, culinary skills and presentation.

Angel’s winning menu was: Citrus spiced salmon, flattoush salad, followed by: Cinnamon cigars with syrup, poached apricots with walnuts & clotted cream. Her prize of a kMix hand held mixer; donated by Kenwood, together with certificates to all six

competitors were made by Mike Sellis, President of the Rotary Club of Havant.

Bill Taylor, Chairman of the Rotary Youth Committee thanked Hayling College and staff for hosting the completion and the judges for supporting the event and announced that Angel and runner up Harriett Germain will now go on to represent the club at the District stage of this national competition held in Bournemouth next February where they will be competing against young chefs from up to 76 other Rotary clubs.

New nursery rhyme tile panels from the War Memorial Hospital on display at The Spring Many visitors to The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre have been delighted to see a selection of tile panels from the old Havant War Memorial Hospital on display in the Oyster Room, after The Spring played host to the entire collection of panels in autumn 2013.

The tiles depict a series of nursery rhymes in beautiful pastel colours, and those now on display tell the stories of Old King Cole and Old Mother Hubbard.

The story of the tiles began in 1935, when Royal Doulton artist William Rowe was asked to design ten panels depicting well-loved nursery thymes, to cheer up the young patients in the King George V Children's Jubilee Ward. Even adults who were later nursed in the former children’s ward have recalled how they derived pleasure from looking at them. Each panel was made up of 24 tiles, with one bearing the signature ‘WR Doulton Lambeth’.

We’ve been keeping a close eye on the catwalks recently to find out what beauty trends we should be expecting in 2015. The beauty look is set to be minimalistic, teaming dewy skin and smudged lips with almost ‘undone’ hair and loose, low ponytails.

Skin It seems well moisturised, clean skin is a must for 2015 and sheen of dewiness is very acceptable. Think post-workout (or school run!) glow and you’ve got the idea. It’s time to step away from the matte powders…

Vogue says - “The best investment you can make next season is a standing appointment with your facialist. Fashion’s fascination with clean, come-as-you-are skin, a sweaty post-workout flush, and the occasional smattering of freckles takes precedent over serious camouflage—and (bonus) cuts your party prep time in half.”

Eyes Some fashion houses made the look pop with a flash of colour on the eyes. Fendi opted to use leather and satin strips as a liner whereas Dior preferred a pop of winged orange under the eyes.

Another look we noticed recurring was the sixties ‘Twiggy’ lashes. A smudge of black liner created a frame for fat, spiky lashes that had been over coated and built up.

Step 1 Take two small sections from the front of the hair. These will be kept separate until the end of the style.

Step 2 Spray the remaining top half of the hair with hairspray and gently backcomb.

Step 3 Spritz the ends of your hair with heat defence spray. Curl inch thick pieces of hair with your favourite curling wand or straightening irons. Leave them to the cool.

Step 4 Using a soft bristle brush, bring together the back combed hair to mimic a beehive, adding beautiful volume to the crown of the head.

Secure with bobby pins.

Step 5 Gently comb through the cool curls with your fingers to add texture. In no particular order, secure the curls to the back of the head, hiding the bobby pins that have secured the beehive.

Gradually build up a glamorous, round section of curls. Tease out the curls to create a fuller look and finish by spraying the entire style.

Step 6 Focusing on the two front sections of the hair, comb through and sweep around the hairline fixing with hair spray. If your hair is slightly longer, either let the hair fall naturally and pin around the back of the head, meeting the curls.

‘The return of the red lip’ If lips weren’t left nude, they were stained with fingerapplied berry shades. This teamed with a bare face can be all you need to give you just the right amount of ‘made up’ appearance. Harsh liners were nowhere to be seen with make-up artists using their fingers or a brush to smudge in colour from the plumpest part of the lips to the edges to create a softer look.

Nails 2015 is all about the ‘Negative Space’ manicure. This painting technique combines graphic nail designs that allow parts of the naked nail plate to show through.
