Utility Films HAMESH "We're an Isle of Wight based company that has been making films, both in the South and nationally for the past 12 years.

In that time we've made over 30 documentaries and information films about such diverse subjects as road safety, hospices, coastal erosion, and child protection.

Around 18 months ago we heard that there were plans to start up a men's shed in Gosport. With the enthusiastic help of the organiser Martin Corrick and help from The Southern Cooperative we followed the entire process, from the first public meeting, to the shed moving into it's premises at Fort Brockhurst. The resulting documentary was broadcast on the Community Channel and also released onto the Internet via Vimeo. The global response was remarkable, with the film being viewed many thousands of times across the world.

We filmed in Havant at HAMESH and also the Havant Men's Shed on 10th October and hope to include some of that footage in our film to be transmitted on the Community Channel (Sky 539/Freeview 63) on 8th November at 8.00pm. Our film is being made possible by the generous support of Wickes.

The shed movement in the UK is burgeoning but has a long way to catch up.

In Australia there are over 1300 sheds, with 200 in Ireland. We hope our film can go some way to helping redress that balance."

Spirit of the South Thank you for the Summer, and welcome to the Autumn, because with it comes the anticipation of (dare I say it) Christmas!.

As a ladies four part harmony chorus we really love the run up to all the festivities.We have had a varied Summer of singing at Garden Parties,Fetes etc and are now putting all our energies into rehearsing our two beautiful songs for convention at Harrigate,at the end of October.

Being part of our lovely chorus,we are 24 ladies of all ages,has fringe benefits.The competitions and week-ends away gives us the chance to chill out, once we have sung,and get to know each other better.

Hayling Island University of the Third Age are staging a special Exhibition at the Royal British Legion Cub, Hayling Island from the 1st – 16th November and is open every weekday from 1-4pm Saturdays and Sundays 10-4pm.

The Exhibition is part of the Commemorations to remember the men who lost their lives during the First World War and the sacrifice the families living on the Island made. The residents of Hayling Island, mainly the women folk, had to keep the many farms productive as well as offering their services to help staff the Volunteer Detachment Convalescent Hospital for wounded Service men.

The Exhibition includes a number of genuine uniforms worn by various armies and over 100 artefacts from the battlefront. Local items include a

handmade Wedding Dress of the period. The five Island Schools have prepared special panels depicting events of the period.

The pupils at the Schools are being encouraged to take part in two competitions involving a piece of Art Work or Creative writing, and it is hoped that early in the New Year a small booklet will be produced recording their efforts as part of the legacy of Hayling’s contribution to the Commemorative events .

The members of the U3A have been researching the lives of all families who lost loved ones and have produced a book ‘The Life and Times on Hayling Island 1914-1919’, copies are available at the exhibition.

A special Service of Dedication and Remembrance will be held, on the 11thNovember at St. Mary’s Church at 10.45am, to unveil plaques recording the twenty six men whose names are not recorded on the existing Memorial Plaques.

What is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy is a general term which is used to cover damage to a part of the brain controlling a part of the body. This damage must occur in the early stages of life, including during birth, in order to be classed as cerebral palsy. The condition manifests itself as problems with controlling and co-ordinating muscle movement.

The causes of Cerebral Palsy can be numerous and quite complex and in some instances there is no obvious reason why a child suffers from cerebral palsy.

Doctors believe that causes include: infection in the early part of pregnancy, oxygen deprivation to the brain, abnormal brain development, restricted intrauterine growth or neonatal stroke. Sometimes these can be caused by medical mistakes – such as incorrect monitoring of the baby during labour, which can lead to a baby’s brain being starved of oxygen.

Cerebral Palsy is normally diagnosed between six months and two years of age when it becomes obvious the child is suffering from some form of developmental delay. Where a doctor suspects a child has Cerebral Palsy he will refer them to a child specialist who will look at the rate of development of the child (i.e. is the child reaching its milestones for walking) as well as physical symptoms such as increased muscle tone.

Each child is affected differently by Cerebral Palsy from small motor difficulties to requiring round-the-clock care. Physiotherapy and adaptive equipment is available for children with Cerebral Palsy to help them access their environment and carry out daily living activities.

What are the symptoms of Cerebral Palsy?

Symptoms of Cerebral Palsy in babies include floppy limbs, the inability to support their head when lying on their stomach, poor feeding and swallowing, a preference to use one side of their body, developmental delay (not reaching the usual milestones of development such as independent rolling, crawling, walking etc.), poor muscle control and spasm or stiffness of the muscles. These symptoms can become more obvious as a baby ages, but the symptoms do not get worse with age.

Over half of those who have Cerebral palsy suffer from an intellectual impairment of some kind, 1 in 3 cannot talk and 1 in four cannot walk. Those with severe Cerebral Palsy require 24 hour care as they are unable to carry out the tasks of daily living.

Are there different types of Cerebral Palsy?

There are four main types of Cerebral Palsy – spastic, dyskinetic, ataxic and mixed. The type of cerebral Palsy depends on which areas of the brain are affected.

Each type of Cerebral palsy is characterised by slightly different symptoms. Those with Spastic Cerebral Palsy have stiff muscles and very jerky movements – this is the most common type of Cerebral Palsy. People who have dyskinetic suffer from involuntary movements which become worse when they try to move the affected area of the body. Sufferers of Ataxic Cerebral Palsy suffer from co-ordination difficulties; they are unstable and imprecise in their movements. Mixed Cerebral Palsy is when a sufferer has two or more of the above types of the condition.

SCALEXTRIC RETURNS Scalextric returned to Havant on Sunday, 28 September when a new swapmeet dedicated to the hobby was held for the first time at the leisure centre in Civic Centre Road.

Scalextric was invented in Havant and first manufactured in 1957 at 36 New Lane, a site now occupied by QVIS security systems. The slide show included details of the inventor and Minimodles founder Fred Francis, the 2 Havant factories and memories & photos contributed by former Minimodels employees.

VIP guest at the event was Mrs Diana Francis, wife of the late inventor who still lives in the region. A number of former employees and their families also attended the day.

Michael Hiscock whose mother worked in the Fulflood Road factory in the 1960s said, “I had a great time, lots of good memories came flooding back” And Doreen Stainburn, a former Miss Minimodels winner brought in pictures of the 1967 contest to show the organisers.

Visitors to the event had travelled from far and wide with some making a 10 hour round trip from the North.

Organiser Robert Learmouth who lives in Swindon said “There was a lot of work which went into preparing for the event but we got some fantastic feedback from those who attended and we are already planning next year’s event.”

In the meantime Robert is looking for further contributions from former Minimodels employees and their families as he aims to build a more comprehensive history of life and times in the factories.

In total, thanks to the tremendous efforts of large numbers of students, parents/carers and staff, 50% of students studying at Havant Academy achieved 5 or more GCSEs A*-C including English and Maths; results show an improvement of 9% from last year.

Impressive results were achieved by Year 11 across the board, notably in English and Maths. In English 70% of students achieved an A*-C ; the number of students making exceptional progress is also remarkable as 86% made three levels of progress with 56% making 4 levels of progress. This places Havant Academy well above national average and one of the top performing schools in the country for progress made in English - truly remarkable! In Maths 58% of students achieved an A*-C which is in line with national average (2013). Many thanks go to all students, staff and parents for their continued support.

What’s on HELPING OUR ANIMAL FRIENDS A huge Thank You to all who visited the coffee morning on Saturday 9th August at the United Reform Church in Mengham in support of The Stubbington Ark Animal Shelter.

Postcode Publications Exploring loss is focus for Portsmouth Conference Representatives from professional and voluntary agencies across the Portsmouth region will be exploring the subject of loss and bereavement and sharing expertise at a conference hosted by the Bereavement Centre and Solent NHS Trust on Thursday 30 October.

The annual conference, which is supported by The Southern Co-operative, will bring over 100 health professionals, volunteers and carers in Portsmouth together to share knowledge and experience around supporting the bereaved. This year’s programme, which focuses on exploring loss, includes speakers from The Southern Co-operative Funeralcare and the Rowans Hospice as

well as Canon Bob White from the parish of St Mary’s in Southsea.

Delegates can also choose from workshops led by local organisations including Portsmouth Abuse and Rape Counselling Services, Solent NHS Adult Learning and Disability Team, Survivors of Bereavement through Suicide, The Bereavement Centre, Solent NHS Multi Cultural Loss and Community Development as well as the Rowans Hospice and Canon Bob White. An exhibition by related local organisations will support the conference.

Lunch and refreshments are included.

in 2000, in the wake of the Air France Paris crash. This includes some gorgeous shots of Concorde carrying out multiple take offs and landings from Shannon Airport in Ireland.

Terence will also talk about various incidents that have happened to Concorde and other aeroplanes that he flew during his 49 year commercial flying career. This will include the terrorist outrage at Athens Airport in 1968 and the ‘Miracle on the Hudson’, when US Airways flight 1549 crash landed on the Hudson River, floated and all 155 on board were saved. pilot & Air Traffic Control.

Havant Pastoral Centre 'A lovely friendly place' 'Somewhere to come and chat' 'It's nice to come here after visiting the doctor' These are just some of the comments made by customers of Havant Pastoral Centre in Havant Methodist Church, which recently celebrated thirty years of service to the community.

The Pastoral Centre first opened its doors on 10th April, 1984, to coincide with the opening of Havant Health Centre, adjacent to the Church. The then-minister, Rev Barrie Snook, thought it would be a good idea to serve refreshments to patients and staff alike, and so, with the enthusiastic agreement of the Health Centre, the Pastoral Centre came into being. Under the umbrella of Churches Together in Havant, Bedhampton and Leigh Park, local churches provided volunteers to serve refreshments, and the Pastoral Centre became a haven where people could find a listening ear or simply meet friends and relax in a welcoming and undemanding atmosphere.

The 30th anniversary of Havant Pastoral Centre was attended by over sixty people, including the then Mayor, Paul Buckley and his wife, Rev Barrie Snook and his wife, Grace, and the present minister, the Rev Bill Stillwell. Centre Manager, Ruth Eastwick, said 'Sometimes people come to us after bad news from the doctor. They want

someone to talk to.

Sometimes, they come in before they get the results of tests. Again, they don't just want a cup of coffee. They want to talk to someone, so we definitely fill a need'.

Local business networking group Business Builders Fareham Solent organised a charity golf day at Southwick Golf Club on Thursday 25th September.

The day raised £500 for the group’s chosen charity Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation (DRWF) from Hayling Island.

The golfers enjoyed fabulous weather for their golf rounds followed by a meal and fundraising raffle in the clubhouse.

This popular networking group meets twice a month at the Holiday Inn in Fareham and sees a regular attendance of over 40 business leaders for the lively networking and guest speaker sessions.

Business Builders Fareham Solent is coordinated by Malcolm Archibald and Nigel Prior, Malcolm commented: “We were delighted by the numbers of golfers joining us as well as the other members of Business Builders and family members who came for the dinner. Everyone enjoyed themselves and we were very pleased with the amount

Food and Wine Interesting and Humorous Wine Facts (or not!).

To get us in a jolly Christmas mood I have researched and compiled a few wine facts, some interesting, some not, some humorous, some unbelievable, to get you excited.

Have you ever wondered where the word wine comes from? No, neither have I, but I researched it and found that the origins of the word are lost. There are similar words from all the ancient languages (Greek oinos, Hebrew yayin, Latin vinum) and it probably grew out of ‘win’, a word from a now forgotten Mediterranean language meaning ‘root’.

When was wine invented? We know it’s been around for thousands of years but the first recognizable wine made from grapes was produced in Bronze Age Georgia and Iran (c 6000BC). However, rice wine was already being made in China. Labels were not around though and these were first put on wine bottles in the early 1700s, but it wasn’t until the 1860s that suitable glues were developed to hold them on the bottles.

Champagne and sparkling wines are the perfect Summer tipple (they are pretty good in spring, not bad in the autumn and fantastic in winter) to drink with our friends and family. And when you open the first bottle have a think about how far you could pop that cork. Wine critics are plentiful, both on TV and in newspapers and magazines. The writer I most admire for his personality and his sheer passion about wine is Oz Clarke.

He has been writing wine for a long time now and I remember watching him when I was younger on the Food and Drink programme thinking I would like to do that.

But the very first wine critic was Roman historian Pliny the Elder.

He rated a wine from 121 B.C. as a vintage “of the highest excellence” and he wrote about it in The History of the Roman Empire around 70 A.D. The wine though was 200 years old at the time.

Chinese Chicken & Pea Pilaff I am delighted to share this family recipe which is a fabulous mid-week dish. I have found that both children and adults enjoy this and if you want to make it more childfriendly you may wish to cut back on the amount of ginger used. For a healthier version use brown rice instead of white, add 50% more stock and double the cooking time! This dish is also great re-heated for lunch the next day, if there is any left over.

For more information about courses available with Food Fiend Experience go to: www.foodfiendexp.com Ingredients for 4 people: 400 – 450g chicken breast or thigh meat 100g rice person 1 chicken stock cube 1 large or 2 medium size onions 5 cm ginger 2 to 3 cloves garlic 600g frozen peas 1-2 tbsp sesame oil 3 tbsp vegetable oil 2 tbsp Soya sauce Salt and pepper 2 tbsp Oyster sauce

Thinly slice chicken

Peel and chop ginger and garlic

To do: 1. Thinly slice chicken and then marinate in sesame oil, soya sauce and pepper. Cover bowl with cling film if leaving in the fridge overnight.

2. Measure out frozen peas in microwaveable dish and defrost using hot water and place in microwave oven for 3 minutes on high.

Saute onions, chicken , garlic and ginger.

Cook until done. Stir in defrosted peas.

3. Wash rice and leave in rice cooker or microwave dish.

4. Make up chicken stock, 400 ml required. For rice to turn out its best use equal volume of water to rice.

Make sure that boiling hot water is used.

5. Dice onions and chop up ginger and garlic finely or use garlic crusher.

Stir rice and meat and pea mixture well adding stock.

6. Cook onions a few minutes in vegetable oil until they start to turn brown and then add chicken, ginger and garlic and cook for 5 minutes or until cooked through. Season with pepper and salt, soya sauce, oyster sauce and sesame oil. Add 50 ml of water. Stir in defrosted peas.

7. Add cooked mixture to rice and the chicken stock.

8. Cook in the microwave on high for 6 minutes and then take out. Stir mixture and cook for a further 6 minutes.

“I first came across this delightful little car in 1995 when I moved to my current address and saw my new neighbour struggling with certain aspects of the engine with most of the car already built from scratch. As well as introducing myself I also offered to help with the engine being a ford pinto 2ltr Single overhead cam which I had a level of experience with. He told me he started building the car in 1990 using a MK4 Ford Cortina as a donor car meaning the engine axle gearbox commonly know as the running gear. From then on we started an excellent relationship and became good friends. We finished the car April that year and Geoff started to enjoy his creation but sadly in November Geoff died of a sudden and quite unexpected heart attack. The car sat in his garage for the next 12 years with his grandchildren using the car as a plaything and as you would expect the years took their toll on the car reducing her to a pretty sorrowful sight. But one morning while having coffee with Jan his wife in 2008 she stated she was considering scrapping the car as nobody in the family wanted it or would be able to bring it back to a road worthy condition, and she remembered that I had helped Geoff with the engine and a few other things and asked if I would like to take it on as a project I almost didn’t allow her to finish the question before giving an answer which of course was yes so the car now came into my possession.

Over the next 10 months I started to sort out what had to be done and at first inspection seemed a daunting task, as all the cables were either rusted or snapped as a result of the boys playing as well as the brakes were all seized with the bodywork in a very poor state.

But as you can see by the photo with her new livery she looks fantastic enjoying being admired at various classic car shows and the occasional wedding and proms.

I put the car on the road for the summer months using the winter months for any repairs that need doing although she is pretty solid with not that much to go wrong...”

THE DUNSBURY WAY CAT

I first noticed this particular cat a few months back when I was waiting at a bus stop to visit a friend. It was lying on the pavement, having a nap and it didn’t particularly make an impression. But after that, I saw it most days.

Then on a Saturday, I realised it was gone, and indeed as the weeks went by I started to notice a pattern. I was seeing it on my days off, if they were during the week, but not really outside office hours.

And then it struck me that this cat must sit at the bus stop waiting for its owner to get back from work. And that made me curious to know more. BOOK REVIEW VICTORIOUS

I always look forward to October as much as some people look forward to Christmas, because I know that I’m about to get my hands on the latest offering from Julian Stockwin.

Consistently topping library lending charts, Stockwin has not so much taken up the torch which was snuffed out by the death of Patrick O’Brian, as sailed off into the sunset while other writers look on enviously.

Nobody questions that the Aubrey and Maturin tales of O’Brian were not great works of art and philosophy, but they were quite inaccessible – and often went off on tangents, sometimes for whole books.

But the dynamic worked, albeit there was always a certain stiffness, and Stockwin has managed to catch some of the spirit of O’Brian, without plagiarism, freshening up a genre that was in danger of drowning.

We first met Kydd and Renzi, the main protagonists of the series, in Kydd, published in 2001.

Naïve shop worker Thomas Kydd finds himself press ganged and meets the erudite and secretive Renzi in the bowels of a massive warship, where they form a close friendship. Over the following few years they gradually become closer, and together rise through the ranks of George III’s Royal Navy.

And Pasha, the fifteenth episode, does not disappoint. Right from the beginning several story arcs, which have been building since the first book, come together to finally give the reader what they had wanted. I won’t give away any secrets, but like all the best writers, Stockwin builds upon the successes and failures of his characters and has launched several more tendrils of exciting possibilities which I hope will continue to delight us for years to come. The Victorious festival came of age this year. More accessible, more bands, more space. And it certainly was popular. I tried every legal trick known, from begging friends, to putting appeals on Facebook, in an attempt to get tickets for the Saturday.

But with acts like Dizzee Rascal and Razorlight, as well as local heroes Kodiak Jack, it proved impossible. But not to be deterred, I went on the hunt for Sunday tickets, and after also drawing a blank, my brother came through and sorted me one out at the last minute. I knew he’d come in useful one day. Joking, mate!

So the good. Stagecoach buses very considerately ran double decker buses all day from the Havant area. Though they were let down by not running a late service, so I had to miss Seasick Steve in order to guarantee I could get home in time. Once again residents of Havant are badly served for public transport if we head into Portsmouth for a night out. We either have to leave around half ten or eleven, or get an expensive taxi.

However, I’m still on the positive aspects of the festival, and there were plenty. The weather was great, the festival was family friendly and there were plenty of things to do and see. And as for the music, there were some stellar acts there. The organisers did good.

And now for the bad. The gougers were out in force, and prices were vicious. Five pounds for a pretty average hot dog or burger, and the beer wasn’t far off those prices either, including real ale, which is traditionally a bit more reasonably priced than generic beer or lager. But, again there were several food options, from vegan to veg hater, there was food there for you; albeit you needed a mortgage to feed a family of four.

But Southsea did itself proud, and the festival goers and residents were easy going and I didn’t see a hint of trouble. I’ll definitely be going next year, and this time I’ll be buying my tickets early.

Have you ever seen what your website looks like on a smart phone or tablet?

The reason I ask is that the way people access the internet has significantly changed over the last 2-3 years. In 2014, the Office for National Statistics reported that 68% of adults in Great Britain had accessed the Internet 'on the go' using a mobile phone and/or a portable computer. Dynamic Dynamo Youth Theatre Havant Dynamo Youth Theatre have performed two very different shows this summer, both of which were enthusiastically received by audiences.

In the middle of July, the whole company performed ‘Where the Poppies Fall,’ a dramatic piece of workshop theatre to commemorate the centenary of the First World War. The piece was written and directed by the senior members who also researched the War with the help of the WW1 Remembrance Centre at Fort Widley and ran for four performances at St Faith’s Church Hall.

“We wanted to try and capture the mood of the country from the beginnings in 1914 when everyone was caught up in the excitement of war through the periods of mass casualties by telling two stories – the soldier on the western front and the munitions worker back in England, the women as well as men. The scenes were plotted and responsibilities shared out to develop and direct individual scenes. We actually had to create a complete production from scratch! Surely, this must be the most difficult task that a directing team of Dynamo has ever taken on” wrote the directors in the programme.

In early September, the seven members who had reached 18 and were leaving the

company, performed a comedy, The Foreigner, by American author Larry Shue at The Spring. A difficult piece for young people to perform as it involved characters of varying ages and developing and sustaining Deep South American accents. As part of the characterisation, the cast went for a day to Gunwharf to convince visitors there that they were American students. They succeeded brilliantly with the final triumph being when they were up the Spinnaker Tower and asked whether the Isle of Wight was France, receiving the reply “You Americans always ask that!”

The Company is now beginning rehearsals for the Christmas show. This is The Snow Queen by Ron Nicol based on the Hans Christian Andersen story and will be performed at The Spring from 8th to 10th January and 15th to 17th January at 7:30pm with matinees on Saturdays 10th and 17th at 2:30pm. This will be an ideal New Year treat for all the family and Dynamo hope to see you there!

RED CHILLI GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

About this time last year Red Chilli opened their doors with a pledge to provide authentic quality Bangladeshi cuisine. Well 12 months on they have truly established themselves as a destination for quality food and ambience.

Their investment in creating a sumptuous stylish and spacious interior has no doubt contributed to their success but the quality of food is the foremost contributor in my opinion.

I visited this restaurant with my companion one windy and cold Thursday evening, and upon entering the restaurant we received a very warm and enthusiastic welcome.

Red Chilli’s extremely comprehensive menu caters for all needs with 14 starters, 13 traditional curries, 16 tandoori dishes plus their Red Chilli

signature section.

We started with the traditional popadams and chutneys – look for the Tamarind sauce – really tasty! For starters we ordered Tandoori mixed platter and Chicken Tikka.

My companion and I decided to explore the exciting list of dishes in the “signature section” - I went out of my normal

comfort zone and choose Lamb Hotkora which is tender lamb cooked in Bengali fragrant lemon called hotkora and with a very more-ish spicy sauce. It was so good I might elevate this dish into my top five choice of curries!. My companion choose Fish Sharisha chunks of fish shallow fried with light spices and in a masala sauce. This with a couple of side dishes was a well presented and very tasty meal. To be honest we couldn’t manage the dessert course but the menu again offered a good choice of dishes.

A good range of wines and beers are available and by the time we left, the restaurant was beginning to become extremely busy. I would recommend you reserve a table in advance – and also mention you read this Top Table article as well!

Now after winning the first series of the BBC’s Big Allotment Challenge, along with his friend Alex Lomax, he’s been offered an exciting new opportunity by Tuppenny Barn in Southbourne.

“They were looking for an education officer,” Ed tells me when I meet him in his local for a chat. “So when they came knocking I jumped at the chance. It’s my dream job.”

“So is that the biggest change in your life, since you and Alex won?” I asked him.

“Well, not many people have stopped me in the street!” he replies. “Maybe four or five people have actually recognised me, but it wasn’t about that. In fact the most exciting upcoming event will be at the Times and Sunday Times Literary festival in October, where I’m appearing with Fay, the Jam judge from the Challenge.

“We’re on first on the stage we’re doing the talk on, and then I’m just going to sit in the green room all day and mingle with real celebrities. I’m quite bookish, so this is going to be brilliant, Martin Amis, John Cleese, Johnny Rotten and Naomi Kline are all going to be there I can’t wait.”

“Can you tell me a little more about what’s happening at Tuppenny Barn?”

“It’s a smallholding which grows

affordable, organic produce, and they’re just finishing the education centre, where I’ll be based. It’s the largest circular hay bale building in the country, with room for 200 seats. It’s a crowd funded project and there’s still a few things to finish off, but we’re getting there.”

“Are you going to miss teaching?” “I’ll miss the kids, immensely, but as I said, this is my dream job mixing education and gardening, and I’m sure the school will bring classes on trips. And this way I get to inform hundreds of kids on every stage of organic gardening.”

And they’ve chosen the right person for the job. Ed clearly can’t wait to get stuck in, and Tuppenny Barn have landed themselves a real asset. We have been treating a lot of runners, cyclists and weight lifters recently, a common complaint is Iliotibial band (ITB) syndrome. ITB syndrome is one of the leading causes of lateral (outside) knee pain in runners. It occurs when the iliotibial band, the fascia (tissue) that runs down the outside of the thigh from the hip to the top

of the shin, becomes tight or inflamed.

The best treatment for ITB syndrome is massage combined with certain stretches and exercises some of which are listed below. Please be aware of your body and take advice from your GP before exercising or send an email to (enquiries@physiological.net) for advice and guidance.

The Essentials of Tai Chi Chuan Tai Chi is a Philosophy. “Chuan” can mean “to transmit”. Tai Chi Chuan is then perhaps, a method of understanding Tai Chi. In some way, an understanding of the concepts of Yin and Yang are necessary, which become clearer as one begins to practice.

Yin and Yang are two forces - dependant on each other for their existence. If we can liken Yang as ‘that which we do or think or simply Action’ and Yin ‘that which we allow to happen or merely observe’ (Inaction). We attempt to balance these two entities giving neither priority.

An excess of activity or inactivity is unhealthy (yin or yang). The methods of practice are more than simply movements.

“Since the government lowered the interest rate five years ago savers have been offered very little in the way of interest on their savings,” says Barratt Homes sales director Michelle Storer.

“While savers and borrowers can make decisions on the back of interest rate change for the short term it has been a very different story for those approaching retirement that need to look further ahead,” says Michelle. “And as a result they are now considering bricks and mortar once again.”

She says there is massive need in the market for rental properties and with the average age of first time buyers being 36 there is now a three stage process towards eventual owner occupation: flat share, sole rental and purchase.

“This new trend has been a massive fillip for buy-to-let investors as young adults look to move out of flat shares,” says Michelle.

One such investor was Portsmouth retiree Gillian King.

Over the last 20 years I’ve been lucky enough to turn a life-long interest in “old things” into my current day jobs – auctioneering in Emsworth Auctions and running an antiques & collectables shop, Emsworth Antiques Etc. in the town’s West Street.

Through these, and after years of interested study, I handle thousands of items and advise their owners on their history and value.

Also, through the shop, I’ve been lucky enough to appear on ‘Antiques Road Trip’ on BBC TV. In case you haven’t seen it, the programme takes antiques professionals to shops and centres around the country.

Their challenge is to buy items in the shops and sell them – for a profit – at an auction. To make it more fun, two experts (with the occasional celebrity) compete against each other. Any money they do make goes to Children In Need.

It takes 3 hours to produce enough footage for about a minute on camera, and everything is honest and above board.

While you have to make a huge drop on a shop price for the expert to stand a chance of making a profit at auction, you do what you can to make sure that ‘your team’ wins. They do not give you the balance of the money off-camera.

The most recent piece of filming took place at the shop on October 4th with the show’s new expert Natasha Raskin looking for that special something to beat her opponent, Charlie Ross.

I can’t tell you what she bought (I’m sworn to secrecy), but you’ll find out in due course when they screen that episode – you’ll just have to keep watching the programme!

In July thirty-two Warblington students and four members of staff went on an adventure of a lifetime in the south of France. They started off on the beautiful Ardeche River, where they spent three days canoeing and playing some amazing games in one of nature’s finest playgrounds. As well as canoeing the group descended down rapids without boats, making a natural waterslide. They took part in many rock jumps and caving adventures, ending in the final day being completed by a giant game of last man standing in a boat. As the last day ended on the river they got ready for the next part of this amazing journey, down to the sandy beaches on the Mediterranean.

The group arrived in glorious sunshine and took to the beach straight away. Along with sailing three kinds of boats, snorkelling, ocean rider, sit-on kayaks, wind surfing and raft building they also found time for a tiny bit of beach football and beach rugby - and maybe a little sunbathing.

When the last night approached and the final disco of the week was over, they sat and reflected on the week, students saying it was the “best trip ever” and staff agreeing.

This was a wonderful week of team building and a life-long experience. The staff are already organising next trip in 2016.

A quiet revolution is spreading across the suburbs of Britain. For many years wine has been the preferred tipple of the drinking classes but now there is credible alternative – craft beers. Traditionally beer was drunk in pubs and thanks to the effort of Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) one can buy good quality cask conditioned beers in most bars.

However, drinking beer at home was often confined to having a few chilled cans of supermarket lager in the fridge. Now there is a real choice for the discerning drinker who perhaps wants to limit their consumption of alcohol or enjoy the depth of flavours available when experiencing real ale in a pub.

The choice is now being provided by the numerous small craft brewers across the country that produce excellent quality beers which perfectly complement any dining experience. It was not thaT long ago that big corporations swallowed up most of our traditional local breweries but the tide has turned and there are now over 1100 independent brewers in the UK. Here in Havant we are leading the way with Havant Brewery who started in 2009 from home and are now based in an industrial unit brewing a wide range of bottled and cask beers which are available from a variety of local outlets or direct from the brewery. alternative to wines and other drinks as they are made of natural ingredients – water, malted barley, yeast and hops. Beers tend to range from 3.5% 6% alcohol which is a lot less that the 11% -14% strength of wine. Many people feel that they may not like beer but have they tried all the different styles that are now available?

The dark roast bitter flavour of a stout may be an acquired taste but the light spicy, lemony taste of a wheat beer could win over even the most sceptical of beer phobics. Craft beers have far more depth of flavour and complexity that their industrial produced counterparts.

Whether you are an experienced beer drinker or someone who is looking for a new taste experience I do commend you to try the wide range of craft beers that are now available. Traditional bitters, old fashioned milds, pale ales, hoppy Indian Pale ales (IPA), wheat beers, stouts and lagers are produced by small scale producers who are all real beer enthusiasts. Independent off licences and Coop community shops will often stock a good range of local craft beers which are a delight to drink at home either on their own or to accompany a fine meal. There are over 20 independent breweries in Hampshire ranging from very small home based brewers to larger concerns such as Upham Brewery who operate nine pubs including the recently refurbished Wheelwright’s Arms in Emsworth Road, Havant.

In future editions I will be exploring the many types of craft beers that are available and helping you to enjoy these marvellous brews.

Calling all photographers - Havant Camera Club started its autumn season on September 9th. We meet at the St John Ambulance Headquarters, Fraser Road, Bedhampton on Tuesday evenings at 7.30, and welcome visitors – if you are thinking about joining, try us out by attending on two occasions, without any obligation!

Throughout the season we have talks by visiting photographers, competitions for prints and digital images, with visiting judges from all over the country. Judges can be very helpful, with emphasis on what is good in a picture, and suggestions of how to make it even better. However it isn't necessary to compete to enjoy the evenings!

Each year there is a Summer season, with four events also on Tuesday evenings.

This year, the first walk, with about 12 members, was to Stoughton, on a fine evening. It was planned to stay in the car park as trees in the distance and nearby

woodland catch the evening light, but people expect to walk, so we carried on up the road. As views were restricted, most of us concentrated on close ups. We also managed to get contra-jour lighting behind leaves as well as woodland shots.

Afterwards there was social time spent in the Barley Mow, Walderton.

On another occasion Members went to Chichester where they spent a fascinating evening photographing the beautiful blooms in the Bishop’s Palace Gardens. Luckily the weather was good!

There was also an evening visit to Swanbourne Lake at Arundel, where members were entranced by some dazzling evening light playing on the waters, and there were also opportunities to photograph the many birds at the Wildlife Centre. It was followed by socialising [optional] in a pub.

By popular demand [there was a very successful visit last year] a trip to Ryde on the Isle of Wight by fast ferry from Portsmouth was enjoyed, where members were treated to the most marvellous sunset.

OFSTED JUDGE WARBLINGTON AS A GOOD SCHOOL

Ofsted inspected Warblington School on 17th and 18th September 2014 and in the report published on 30th September 2014, judged the school to be graded as ‘Good’. They stated that the “the Governing Body and Senior Leaders have established

an ethos of high expectations in all aspects of the school’s work which is leading to rapid improvements in teaching and achievement.” They commented that standards are now “rising sharply” and that “students feel safe and behave well.”

Headteacher Julia Vincent is delighted with the result and paid tribute to the staff, students and governing body who have all worked tirelessly over the last two years to achieve this result.

The Ofsted judgement comes on top another year of improved examination outcomes. The school secured a small increase in the Gold Standard with just over 50% achieving 5A*-C grades including English and Maths. Ofsted commented that “progress has improved significantly in 2014 and is now good”. The school is proud of all our students for working hard and congratulate them on their excellent GCSE results.

The school is especially proud of the outcomes in English which were higher than those achieved nationally. The number of students achieving A*-C in English increased by a further 9% from

2013 to 69%.

Similarly A*-C outcomes in Maths also increased to 62%. Ofsted stated that “the school’s internal data provided firm evidence that both subjects will continue to improve significantly in 2015.”

In addition 70% of students achieved A*-C in History and 76% achieved A*-C in Religious Education, both of which are also above previous national averages. Modern Foreign Languages saw a 5% increase in A*-C grades, further increases were seen in Science; the number of students achieving 2 x Science A*-C grades increased by 3%.

Student behaviour and attitudes have improved markedly over the past two years and Ofsted noted that “The majority of students enjoy learning and they display positive attitudes and perseverance” and that “students are extremely courteous to each other, their teachers and to other adults”. Ofsted also observed that “The students show a great pride in their own appearance and that of the school.”

Since 2007 a determined team have worked hard to create a strong and inspiring offer of ladies rugby within Havant Rugby Club. That team has evolved and grown over the last few years, gathering momentum with 2 promotions in recent seasons and with a great style of rugby being played. Over time, having seen the hard work, dedication and passion which the ladies team effuse, general support within the club for the Ladies team has grown and the ladies team is now an integral part of Havant RFC. Our aim is to create a warm and inviting ladies team, where fun and enjoyment are top of the agenda but with an underlying ambition to continue to achieve success and develop skills further.

JUNIOR VOLLEYBALL CLUB FREE FIRST 6 SESSIONS A new junior volleyball club has started up for juniors aged 10 - 18 years.

The venue is the sports hall at Horndean Technology College, Barton Cross, Waterlooville, PO8 9PQ. Sessions are held every Saturday from 10.30 – 12.30.

The club is open to all 10 -18 boys and girls - whether you have played volleyball before or not. There is no need to book in advance - just go along to any session. The first 6 sessions are free and after that will cost £2 per session.

The club will be part of the South Hants Volleyball Club and run by coaches and staff. The Club is registered with Volleyball England, the National governing body, and meets all the requirements for running a junior club including fully qualified coaches who are vetted and firstaid trained. The club has full public liability insurance and a welfare officer whose job is to monitor the health and well-being of everyone involved in the club.

Volleyball is an energetic and dynamic sport, popular the world over and can be played indoors, outdoors, standing, sitting, from 2 up to 6 a side, single sex or mixed. It can be a great fun holiday sport for all the family. It can also be an elite, demanding sport or anything in between, but the main thing about volleyball is that the people who play it have great fun, make many new friends and keep fit at the same time. So, if you are a junior, the challenge is to go along and try it out. If you are reading this as a parent or guardian encourage your juniors to give it a try. The Club looks forward to welcoming lots of new junior players.

The side has yet to hit top gear, they are already a strong unit that defends solidly, has a high work-rate, tempo and the ability to impose their game on their opponents.

Obviously there could be disappointments along the way but this new found strength and confidence has been highly contagious amongst the squad and augers well for the season ahead.

It is pleasing to see the Hawks plans carefully laid at HQ starting to pay rich dividends. Football Managers and Club Chairmen have a unique relationship in the game of football. The Managers have to provide results while the Chairman/Board of Directors have to find funds to make it all possible.

“I just need a couple more players” is a phrase often heard around football clubs at all levels. Hawks Manager Lee Bradbury has not only found his ‘couple of players’ but has also signed them up for the club. Brian Stock (midfield) helped Burnley get into the Premiership last season. Alan Connell, an experienced football league striker, has also joined - from Vanarama Conference side Grimsby Town, a respected Football Club, until recently playing in the higher reaches of the English football league ladder and one of the favourites for promotion from the Conference Premier League this season.

Neither of these players have played ‘parttime’ football before but on the evidence so far will be major stars at Vanarama Conference South level.

Since this pair came to the Club at the start of September, initially ‘training with the Hawks squad’ to keep their fitness ticking over, they have joined up with other transferees Warren Cummings (left-back) and Dan Strugnell (right-back) and the rest of the squad, and helped the Hawks soar to the top of the table, after six consecutive victories, conceding not one goal.

The question now on everybody’s lips is why have so many quality players signed for this small community based club in Hampshire at this time, some having likely turned down the chance of more lucrative full-time offers? Friendship, but more so mutual respect, seems the most likely explanation, given that Stock, Connell,

Cummings and Strugnell - together with Hawks Boss Lee Bradbury are all former AFC Bournemouth players. Each has bought into the Club, its professionalism, ambition to attain higher status and the loyal band of supporters. After spending all their careers at ‘big’ clubs these players have in essence decided to give something back to the game which has given them good careers. The upshot is that everyone around the club now has a smile on their face.

After many false dawns over the past decade, although coupled with the building of solid foundations, optimism is now at an all-time high at Westleigh Park. With important matches coming thick and fast, never can there have been a better time to be a Hawks supporter. The numbers attending matches are increasing both home and away as the side keeps churning out result after result.

Although in all reality the side has yet to hit top gear, they are already a strong unit that defends solidly, has a high workrate, tempo and the ability to impose their game on their opponents. Obviously there could be disappointments along the way but this new found strength and confidence has been highly contagious amongst the squad and augers well for the season ahead.

Denmead Striders Running Club 25th Anniversary 10k Race The Denmead Striders running club has been helping competitive athletes and others to run better for 25 years. The club marked the occasion this summer with an anniversary party where longstanding and new members could meet the founding chairman, Charlie Burton. Charlie was a good runner and keen to establish a Club to encourage others to share his passion.

His son John and his two grandchildren ran in the Denmead 10k event referred to below.

Denmead Striders today have around 120 members, ranging from talented athletes such as Julian Manning, who placed 188th in this year's London Marathon, to 83 year-old Mike Shaw, who has just celebrated running in the club's regular 3.5 mile handicap race without stopping. Havant Hockey Club Following the relegation of Havant Hockey Club’s 1st XI men’s team from the English Hockey League at the end of last season, the Club’s shake up of the team reported in the last edition of postcode has continued throughout the close season.

New Coach, Ady Adams wish to get the team playing with style and packing a greater goal threat, particularly from short corners looks set to bear fruit. Club President Chris Pickett has worked hard to bring in the players Adams needed.

With a goal scorer the priority the Club has completed the signing of former captain of the India national team, Sandeep Singh. Singh has 212 caps for India and was a member of India’s 2012 team at the London Olympics. Sandeep also has a world record drag flick to add to the teams potential for goals from penalty corners! The strengthening of the team has also included the signing of two Polish players. Maciej Janiszewski is an international player and the other Tomasz Nowicki comes as a promising talent.

Clubs quest to regain its National League status is essential with others teams in the league also strengthening their teams. The 2014/15 season holds much promise for those playing for and supporting Havant Hockey Club.

The team got off to a flying start winning its first match in the South Premier Division 1 by 7 – 2 against Lewes at Havant College on 4 October, with new signing Sandeep Singh scoring a hat-trick of penalty corners, Michael Deller-Merricks scored twice, with further goals coming from Oliver Nail, and James Speke.

The Ladies 1st XI has already played three games in the new campaign. After finishing in 6th place in League South Division 1 last season, and with much the same players, the team has made a disappointing start under new manager, Richard Cook, and new coach, Mark Robinson. The Ladies have lost both away games and drawn their only home match.

However, the results indicate that the games have been close and that the Ladies are playing an open style, having scored 5 goals and conceded 6.

Miss-Hits Tennis Course Starts at Avenue Tennis Club, Havant

Junior Tennis Coach, Alice Robson, has set up a new tennis course for girls aged 5-8 at the Avenue Lawn Tennis and Squash Club, situated at Southleigh Road, Havant PO9 2RS. The Miss-Hits Tennis Course has been specifically designed by Andy Murray’s mother Judy to get more young girls involved in playing tennis.

As part of the process of involving the girls in learning to play tennis, the experience includes other fun activities such as dancing and games related to the kind of movement and other skills needed for tennis and other racket games. The

girls will get to make friends, gain new skills, build their confidence, and most of all, be with like-minded girls and have lots of fun in the process.“ The new course started this September, but it is not too late to enrol. Tim’s October Sports Round-up

Cricket Havant Cricket Club was in the chase to win back the Southern Electric League Premier Division title right up to the final game of the season. With one game left the title would be decided in their game with fellow contenders South Wilts. Going into the game on the final Saturday of the season on 30 August, South Wilts were top of the table and home advantage, made them favourites for the title. South Wilts batted first and set Havant a challenging score of 176 to regain the title. The difficult wicket proved too much and Havant were bowled out for 127, 48 runs short of the required total, and rather disappointingly had to settle for the runners-up spot.

Sadly the second eleven were relegated from their place in Division 2.

Havant & Waterlooville FC Hawks recent impressive form saw them beat Boreham Wood 2-1 on 4 October to leap frog them at the top of the table, only for Boreham Wood to take top position back on Tuesday 7 October when Hawks could only draw 2-2 away at lowly Wealdstone. However Manager Lee Bradbury was happy with the draw after Hawks twice had to come from behind.

Young striker JJ Hooper is in fine form having already scored 11 goals this season.

Rugby Havant RFC’s season in league London 1 South has got off to a slow start with just 5 points gained by 4 October. Only bottom team Cobham with 4 points has fewer points than Havant. Havant’s match with mid table Charlton Park at Hooks lane on 4 October was however, an exciting high scoring game, for the spectators at least, ending with the scores level on 31 points apiece. The Club’s next games – away to fellow strugglers Hove and home to high flying Wimbledon will indicate whether the side are improving at this early stage of the season.

“Clearly there are some sailors who will be disappointed by some of these decisions, but it’s an important part of the process towards evaluating and refining the programmes in each of the classes, and delivering the support that hopefully will allow sailors to move from fourth or fifth places to the podium, and then into those gold medal positions.

“It’s that fine detail of review, planning, delivery and execution that will see those gold medals being won in a couple of years, and we’ll keep taking those steps and making refinements towards our target.”

Tennis Andy Murray has been playing in China in October as part of his rehabilitation following major back surgery in the autumn of 2013 and to sharpen up his game ready for new season starting in Australia in January. However, on his return to Europe later this month (October) he will go all out to get his 2014 world ranking into the top 8 to gain entry into the season ending Champions Tournament at the 02 in London in November. A good Champions Tournament would set him up nicely for lead-up to the first Grand Slam in Melbourne in January. With a return to full fitness in 2015 expect to see Murray raising his game and adding to his Grand Slam titles.

Walking Football As previousy reported in earlier in the Sports pages of this Newspaper, a new type of football for older footballers – Walking Football for those aged 50+ – has been introduced recently by the England Football Association and is taking hold locally.

HWFC 50+ Football, Fun and Friendship – From Ian ‘Hawkeye’ Radford Walking Football has captured the imagination of many football supporters across the country and HWFC have moved quickly (no pun intended) to offer this brand of football. The Club has been surprised at the amount of interest shown already.

Shaun Gale, who has run the Community Team at the Hawks for many years as well as his Assistant Managers job with the First Team, is the man with a plan for this new branch of the game. He said to Postcode “Many older supporters have enjoyed long local football careers before time has caught up with them. This new brand of football brings together the team spirit they witnessed at a younger age and is a good

excuse to get out of the house and have some fun with your mates”.

After just three weeks the Hawks have Eleven players signed up for the walking squad, which play on a smaller pitch with smaller goals. The ‘lads’ meet up at Westleigh Park at 11.00am on Thursday mornings and anybody is welcome to join.

Already friendships have been forged and a strong team spirit has developed with laughter an important part of ‘training’.

The rules are quickly learned and the hardest part of the game initially is trying to stop breaking into a run. After each hour long session a cup of tea (or something a little stronger) is partaken in the Westleigh, where talk soon turns to football.

Such is their popularity the squad players now have their own section on the HWFC Official Website with their photos and player profiles displayed just like the First Team.

Plans are being made to increase the number of training sessions to include an evening session as many potential HWFC 50+ players work full-time and can’t train during the day.

The club is making arrangements for the squad to start playing a few rival clubs after a few more weeks training. These will probably start as one off friendly matches followed hopefully by a little tournament in the not too distant future.

Portsmouth Football Club The Football League Division Two side has slipped up recently, following a promising start to the season. Goals have dried up for Pompey and the inability to score is proving a limitation on the team’s performance capabilities. They badly need to find a goal scorer if they are to revive their fortunes. On an evening in September local lawyers and judges turned out in force after their day’s work to support local Citizens Advice offices in Worthing, Chichester and Havant for a sponsored 10k walk around Chichester. Two judges, teams from several

local firms and all 3 CAB Districts came with t-shirts collecting tins and even a couple of well-dressed dogs to raise valuable funds for the local CABs starting from the Crown Court building in Southgate Street and finishing with a well-

earned drink at a pub near the Canal Basin.

Havant CAB is hoping to use the funds to provide better facilities at its bureaux for advisers and clients.

The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) did much of the local organisation of the walk and so far the total fundraising has topped £4.000. The whole procedure time is approximately 30 minutes, however the injection process itself only takes several minutes. Clients can return to work immediately but they should refrain from exercise, saunas, sunbeds and alcohol for 24 hours.

The aim is for a natural, more youthful look (not the frozen look) unless desired by the client.

Botox may not be suitable for all clients and they may wish to consider other treatments such as dermal fillers and derma-rollers.

Dermal Fillers Dermal fillers consist of a gel that naturally occurs in the body called hyaluronic acid. As we age, our faces naturally lose subcutaneous fat causing sagging, lines and wrinkles.

Derma-roller is a natural way to improve the appearance of the skin and reverse the signs of aging, scarring, fine lines, stretch marks, acne spots and mild pigmentation. The roller consists of very fine needles, which achieve a controlled injury to dermis skin layer. This process stimulates skin renewal and collagen production for a rejuvenated, smooth and youthful complexion.

The Derma-roller is available in different sizes dependent on the assessment of the skin. Treatment time is approximately 1 hour. Redness may be present for a few hours with the smaller derma-rollers and a few days with the larger sizes. It is recommended to have at least 3 treatments for maximum effect.

Results begin to show after a few weeks and are long lasting.

Dermal fillers, Botox and Derma-roller can be used in conjunction with each other.
