PORTSMOUTH WATER & STAUNTON PARK PARTNERSHIP Portsmouth Water joins forces with Staunton Country Park to encourage visitors to make a small change and make a big difference! Staunton Country Park and Portsmouth Water are pleased to have extended their education partnership for a further 3 years until September 2016. The partnership, which at the end of this agreement will have reached 12 years, looks to promote water efficiency and to deliver a ‘Water is Life’ programme to schools looking at the water cycle, water supply and treatment as well as water conservation. Both organisations are committed to deliver a variety of fun and interesting activities to spread the word that everyone can do something to save water now and save the environment for tomorrow. The water we drink has been circling around in the water cycle for millions of years – that means the same water exists now as when the dinosaurs were on the Earth! Of all the earth’s water only 1% is fresh water so we all have to make sure we use it wisely. With more people on the planet and more demand for water this means there will not be enough to go round without us changing our behavioural habits when it comes to water use. With people in the South East of England using on average 160 litres of water a day, higher than the UK average of 150 and much

greater than many of our European neighbours it is important that we all look to save water and this partnership aims to educate future generations in the importance of using water wisely. Kerry Bailey, Country Park Manager said “I am really pleased that we have extended our education partnership with Portsmouth Water. Over the last three years working with Portsmouth Water we have introduced a World of Water exhibit, an area within the Park which was developed in conjunction with teachers and children from local schools. This exhibit is open to all visitors to the Park. We also added last year a Water ‘I SPY’ trail aimed at nursery and primary school aged children along with a complete revamp of the ‘Water is Life’ education pack. The education pack, which will be launched to schools in March 2014, will be delivered here at Staunton by our education team.” Ian Limb, of Portsmouth Water says “The key aims of this partnership are to teach our community, in particular future generations, the importance water has on the planet, the supply process and most importantly why we all need to use water wisely. A few simple changes today will help save the environment for tomorrow. Working with Staunton allows us to work with the local community in getting this very important message across.”

Havant Cemeteries Project Colourful Display Planted for next Spring If you walk around New Lane Cemetery next spring you will be enchanted by a colourful display of flowers. During damp and cloudy volunteer sessions in February and March native bluebell, snowdrop and wild daffodil bulbs were planted around the cemetery. They were planted ‘in the green’ after

the bulbs have already flowered for this year. Using this method of planting gives a more successful amount of bulbs growing next year. The bulbs will provide a colourful display for visitors next spring as well as providing an early source of nectar for bees and other insects. The volunteer sessions run on a monthly basis and are part of the Havant Cemeteries Project. The project is being run by The Conservation Volunteers with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Celebrations at Watermill Court Two wonderful couples who love living at Watermill Court have recently celebrated big wedding anniversaries. June and Bill celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in March. They have two wonderful sons who visit regularly with their wives to take them out and make sure they are both OK. I always call June, Watermill Court’s blond bombshell, Bill is handsome too of course. When June and Bill first met, June (who is not a big lady) was the driver of a 6 ton lorry when she was part of the ATS. Bill could not drive at that time. Bill is a great supporter of Pompey football club. I’m told by other residents that June is excellent at indoor bowls, (Wednesday evening) and Bill is always winning when they play Beetle (Saturday evening). June is a good cook, but has set off the smoke alarm a couple of times! They both go out every day into Havant town, they always come back with bags full of food - I don't know where it all goes; they are both so slim. Jean and Keith celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary recently. They too have a wonderful family always popping in with the many grandchildren and great grandchildren. The youngest one comes in his own car!!! They have many wonderful pictures of their family celebrations over the years, all hung up or in frames on every surface. Jeans family recently had a book printed for Christmas. The book comprises all of Jeans notes, poems and photos that she kept over the years. It tells the story of their life together and all the things that had a profound impact in their life; like, the death of Princess

Diana, and the huge park home that Bill sweated over to make it perfect for Jean to live in. It was lovely to read, some sad, but mostly happy memories. Oh yes, I must mention that Jean and Keith both love Mrs Browns Boys on TV. 60 and 65 years is such a long time, I have been married for only 34 years and hope that I make it to 65 with my wonderful husband Chris.

The improved and relocated gym is being provided as part of the increasingly successful partnership between operators Horizon Leisure Centres and landlords Havant Borough Council.

It will also help meet the Government target of getting ‘more people, more active, more often’ and address the fact that nationally Havant has below-average participation level in adult sport. The Board of Trustees and staff at Team Horizon are excited at the plan to open the new Gym facility at Havant in July which will help achieve the Charity’s vision of ‘Making Life Better’!” The Council are very happy with the operation of their two Leisure Centres which has seen them both receive reaccreditation of the prestigious Quest quality assurance scheme for the efficient running of sport and leisure facilities. As a result, in exchange for the significant investment to be made by the Charity, the Council has agreed to extend the length of the current lease.

New Club for PO9 The Bedhampton and Havant Friends club is the latest club for older people to have been launched in PO9. New members are being invited to join the club which meets every Wednesday afternoon between 2 and 4pm at Bedhampton Social Hall, Bedhampton Road. Organisers hope that more local people at a loose end on a Wednesday afternoon will go along or visit the club. The friendship club provides an opportunity for local older people to meet together, make new friends and have fun. A varied programme includes speakers, entertainers and other activities such as outings - not to forget the time at every meeting when members can just sit and chat while enjoying a nice good cup of tea. Ed Ingleton, Head of Club Services for Brendoncare clubs in Hampshire said: “Our clubs bring people together and provide the chance for people to have fun and do something different. Brendoncare runs around 70 clubs across Hampshire and Dorset and in a recent survey of our members, over 90% people said they had

Friday 6th to Sunday 8th June A DAY OUT FOR EVERYONE WHO LOVES THEIR GARDEN The Garden Show at Stansted Park is celebrating its 20th birthday. Twenty years ago Jane Sterck and Lizzie Dymock were asked to set up a garden show at Stansted Park in Hampshire to create a forum for start-up businesses and showcase the work of talented groups like The Princes Trust. Gardening enthusiasts were learning that you don’t have to be experts to make your garden look great and were keen to access good design, plants and garden accessories. There was a gap in the market and Jane and Lizzie were confident that it would be a good opportunity for local gardeners, designers and artists to exhibit; particularly

those who couldn’t afford the larger, more commercial shows. The first show consisted of about 30 enthusiastic stands and an art exhibition with gardening celebrities Anthony Paul, Penelope Hobhouse, John Brookes and Paula Pryke to help kick off in style. Since then many gardeners and designers have been generous with their time and given great gardening talks and demonstrations. Now there are over 300 exhibitors including about 20 charities who have made thousands of pounds over the years. Jane’s two daughters Emily and Lucy are now an important part of the team and the Show is

still supported by friends who take the weekend off and morph into staff.Visitors enjoy the friendly atmosphere and agree that it is a brilliant opportunity to buy beautiful plants and chat to specialist plantsmen and designers who really know what they are talking about. They appreciate the refreshingly different range of gardening accessories and gifts and find it difficult to tear themselves away from the Food Marquee with its mouth-watering artisan country foods and cookery demonstrations. New this year is a blacksmith art exhibition complementing the Art and Design Marquee with its fabulous crafts and design. By popular demand the Plant Doctors

return to dispense their practical advice with workshops on creating wild flower meadows and planting trees. Lots of interactive fun for both adults and children who as well as engaging with new gardening skills can learn to juggle, go zorbing, get lost in the maze, ride the model railway or play in the fairground. Stansted’s lovely parklands are there for all to enjoy and it is a good opportunity to explore the House, Chapel and arboretum and watch the Huxley Birds of Prey soar through the skies. It is a great day out for all the family.

Crematorium Scheme Supports Local Hospice

The Oaks, Havant Crematorium donated £3473 to Rowan’s Hospice, following a share of funds from a national recycling scheme that the crematorium belongs to. The Oaks, which was opened by The Southern Co-operative in December 2013, belongs to a metals recycling scheme run by the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM). Roddy McGinley, The Oaks Crematorium Manager, explained: “It’s important to understand that the recycling of metals following a cremation of a deceased person is only done with the written consent of each bereaved family. Following a cremation, the cremated remains may contain metals from orthopaedic implants such as hip and knee replacement joints as well as items used in the construction of the coffin. This metal, always with the bereaved family’s approval, is recycled by ICCM with proceeds shared

between its members to donate to a charity of their choice. For us, it was important to support Rowan’s Hospice as a local charity.” The ICCM believes that its members and the bereaved are able to make a difference with this recycling scheme, both in environmental terms and also in the care of the bereaved through all proceeds being donated to charity. Roddy added: “The Oaks crematorium was built to the highest environmental standards and this scheme fits well with this and The Southern Co-operative’s ethos of caring for our community.” Roddy is also the current National President of ICCM. Ali George, Corporate and Trust Relations at the Rowan’s Hospice, said: “The Rowans Hospice is delighted to have been nominated by The Oaks to receive a donation from The Institute of Crematorium Management. £3,473 is a significant donation, the equivalent of supporting seven patients requiring inpatient care at The Rowans Hospice. With 19 in-patient beds, The Hospice provides excellent palliative care services, caring for over 350 individuals each year who need help with symptom control, respite or end of life care. This year is the 50th anniversary of the club. To celebrate its continuation a Jubilee Party is scheduled for the 12th April and as guest of honour, The Worshipful the Mayor of Havant has been cordially invited to attend with club members and their partners. Mini Bus Chairman, Trevor Slydell reported that the new Community Bus was very popular. The bus is very often not used during the evening or week end so the Club would like to hear from any local charitable organization who would like to make use of this facility. Food and Wine Champagne is from Champagne By: Johnathan Rogers

There have been a few calls over the last year that English Sparkling wine should be allowed to use the term 'Champagne' because the quality is good enough. Sure, the quality is good enough and has been for several years now. Also we are now only allowed to use the three permitted grape varieties as they use in Champagne, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meurnier. Some people argue the point that if we are only allowed to use the same grapes then we should be able to use the name. This argument I feel is moving away from the main point. It is to our benefit in a way that we are only allowed to use the same grapes as they do in Champagne, as it puts us on an equal footing with the Champagne producers. When our sparkling wines beat the Champagnes in tasting competitions, they have nothing to argue about. But Champagne is called Champagne for the simple fact that it is produced there. If we start naming our sparkling wines 'Champagne' where will it end? Bordeaux

wines are made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but there are plenty of wines from around the world also made from these grapes and using the same production methods. Wines from Australia, California, Chile, etc, could also be called 'Bordeaux'. The same can be said for Cotes du Rhone, Tourain Sauvignon and other areas. My point is, is that English wines have an identity of their own. We should not be compared to the better known wines from other countries because we have our own styles. As we only have around 400 commercial vineyards in the UK and account for less than 1% of the worlds wine production, we are not big enough to start regionalising wine production. We don't have 'Hampshire Quality Wine' or Quality Wine from Sussex' as yet (although there are rumblings from Brussels that this could happen). We do not have regional differences in our wines although weather patterns do vary in different parts of the UK. All these aspects account for our own unique style of wine and this should be recognised more.

Gluten free Chocolate and Beetroot Cake This really is a healthy naughty treat as this cake does not contain any fat and in fact I have also reduced the sugar content as well! This recipe delivers a tasty, healthy treat which is moist and full of goodness and will hit all the right spots. The addition of the beetroot increases the moisture and the ground almonds provides a lovely nutty taste and texture which gives, the cake the special factor. This cake is deliciously rich but not heavy and if cut into 12 slices each slice is only 210 calories, so a slimmer’s delight, I am sure. Ingredients • olive oil for greasing • 200 g good-quality dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids) • 250 g raw beetroot • 4 large free-range eggs • 100 g caster sugar • 120 g ground almonds • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1 Tsp of cocoa powder Method 1. Preheat the fan oven to 170°C; 2. Lightly grease the bottom and sides of a 20cm spring form cake tin with olive oil, line with grease proof paper; 3. Use a Y-shaped peeler to peel the beetroot (you might want to wear gloves to do this), then quarter them on a chopping board. Push the beetroot through the coarse grater attachment on the food processor, then tip into a large bowl. Chop any large pieces of beetroot with a knife; 4. Separate the white from yolks and put into two large bowls; 5. Stir the sugar, ground almonds, baking powder, cocoa powder, egg yolks, beetroot and mix together well; 6. Break 200g of the chocolate up into small pieces and add to a heatproof bowl and microwave on low heat until melted add this to the egg and beetroot mixture and stir well; 7. Use an electric hand whisk to whisk the egg whites until you have stiff peaks; 8. Use a spatula to fold a quarter of the egg whites into the beetroot mixture to loosen, then once combined, fold in the rest but try not to over mix; 9. Add the mixture to the prepared cake tin and spread out evenly; 10. Bake in the hot oven for around 30 – 35 minutes, or until risen and cooked through. Postcode Publications Emsworth Weekly Arts and Craft Market Shelley’s Creative Arts and Craft Market has opened its doors again for its third year at the Emsworth Methodist Church and Pastoral Centre situated in the Square in Emsworth. The craft market which first opened in March 2012 has continued to provide a platform for local talented crafts people to sell a range of quality arts and crafts to local people living in and around Emsworth as well as to visitors to the area. The market offers a variety of stalls, some offering independent workshops bookable with the individual stallholders themselves. The Art’s & Craft Market is mainly open every Friday from 1pm until 4pm but occasionally we are offering a Saturday market from 10am until 2pm. Entrance is free. More details below. Working together eleven years ago, three local Lions clubs, Hayling Island , Havant and Portsmouth devised a project which allows charities to raise monies for their funds. Last year we estimated it raised £25,000. What better way is there than to spend a pleasant early summer morning walking with friends around a harbour full of interesting bird life in the peace and quiet. This is how monies were raised, sponsoring the walk. The Lions clubs have seven stations manned around the 13mile walk. Sponsored individuals or groups may walk clockwise or anticlockwise between the stations and have passports which are credited with each set of mileage. These are stamped and eventually signed allowing the sponsors to pay accordingly. The check points open at 9am and close at 4pm. Hayling Island Choir Hayling Island Choir celebrates its thirtieth year. After a very successful Christmas concert last December the second concert of the Choir’s 30th season is of choral music by Mozart,Vivaldi, Haydn and Bach. Waterlooville Music Festival takes place from Saturday June 14th -22nd in this its ninth year. This year the Festival is running a competition for a new piece of music. Life Drawing at The Spring The human form is perhaps one of the most versatile, unique and challenging subjects to capture in art. At The Spring we are working with Artist Nic Cowper to run a series of workshops and a one off special in which participants can try their hand at depicting both the male and female body with different media and techniques. Would you know what to do in an emergency? Hayling Island Community Centre are offering three very different First Aid courses for anyone wanting to brush up or learn new skills: Basic First Aid Monday 12th May 10am-12.30pm £5. This course will look at what to do in an emergency and how to look after an unconscious casualty, there will be a demonstration of CPR with a chance for everyone to practice on dummies. Participants will learn how to deal with shock, major bleeds, basic life support and CPR, heart attack and strokes. No prior knowledge is necessary. The second course is Basic First Aid for Children, and is suitable for anyone who is involved with looking after babies or youngsters. This will be on 19th May and 23rd June - £5. Weekly classes for adults at The Spring “Reeling and writhing and fainting in coils” was how the Mock Turtle described his lessons to Alice in Wonderland. In The Spring’s summer brochure you’ll find a fair stab at these branches of the arts. Representing “fainting in coils”, we have Oil Essential Skills on Tuesdays from 10am to 12 noon. Experienced tutor Heather Gray-Newton will provide instruction in the basics of techniques, material and colour work. Also on Tuesdays from 1pm to 3pm, there’s Pastels Essential Skills with tutor Robyn Cheyne. Participants will acquire a basic knowledge of techniques for soft and oil pastels, including blending, scumbling and feathering. Watercolour and drawing skills are included too, with Drawing Essential Skills on Wednesdays from 10am–12 noon, for those who are new to drawing or just starting to learn, and Watercolour Projects from 1pm–3pm. This is an opportunity for individuals to develop their own style under the expert guidance of Heather Gray-Newton. Year 10 University Challenge Last term a group of 12 Havant Academy students went on a two-day trip to Southampton University. The reason for this was to find a cure for an ‘outbreak’ of smallpox. Each school were competing to make a presentation with the solution to cure smallpox. To do this, we split up into groups of two or three and went to different workshops.

These workshops included: communication skills, UV detection of disease, CPR on rubber dolls, vaccinating fake arms and gene work on cancerous cells. In these workshops, we wrote down notes then came back into our groups to discuss what we found. We then created a PowerPoint, poster and portfolio and finally presented all this to a panel of judges.

The university seemed to be filled with useful resources to help you in your education. We worked in ‘the Cube ‘which can be turned into a night club for the students. It was nice that the university was packed full with cafés, libraries and other useful places, including a swimming pool and a gym! After experiencing this trip, I have decided I would like to attend University and Southampton would definitely be an option!

AIR AMBULANCE TO DEPLOY INTERIM EUROCOPTER 135 The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance will be operating an enhanced model of the familiar Eurocopter 135 with effect from June 2014,. Branding and conversion work has already begun on the new helicopter. In the interim, as part of Bond Air Service’s re-positioning of aircraft within their fleet, from Thursday 27th February, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance will be operating another Eurocopter 135 .

The helicopter will carry the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance logo and branding. However, the eagle eyed may spot that it looks slightly different from the usual branding that has become such a familiar sight across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, and that will return to service in June 2014. As winter turns into spring a large group of Hayling's finest bowlers took to the highways and byways in a last minute attempt to regain some fitness before the rigours of the summer bowling season. Following a pleasant walk along the Billy Trail into Havant coffee was taken at The Spring before returning to Hayling and an enjoyable lunch at Meadow Farm Tea Rooms: Our thanks to them for providing 28 excellent lunches very efficiently. All the money raised from the winter walks will be donated to the club's nominated charity for 2014, the Hayling Community Responders, as well as the profit made from the fortnightly cribbage sessions that have been running all winter in the URC church hall.

Hayling People

The murder rate on Hayling Island is soaring and local author George East is the man responsible! George is near to completion of the third book in his Inspector Murder and Mystery Mowgley Murder Man George East Mysteries series, and much of the sometimes grisly action takes place on or around the Island. Amongst other gory discoveries, body parts have been washed up at Sandy Point and a body found dangling from Hayling Bridge. ‘I was born on Hayling,’ says George, ‘although they still haven’t put a blue plaque up on the cottage in Whitethorn Road. The Island really is a special place, and lends itself very well to creative writing.’

George and his wife Donella have spent the last thirty years travelling around and living in France. They bought a house overlooking the sea in South-East Hayling ten years ago, and have now moved back to live and work on the Island. George is the author of fifteen travel, memoir and fiction books, and is already mapping out a novel set in a retirement community on the Island. ‘It’s going to be about the goings-on in the care home and elsewhere on Hayling,’ he says, ‘and there will be murder, mayhem and even the odd steamy sex session amongst the overseventy-year-olds. Life & Times on Hayling Island 1914-1919 In this Centenary year of the outbreak of WW1, Hayling Island U3A members are pushing ahead with their project to highlight this period of history on the Island. A book is being produced which will include montages of the men whose lives were lost, and aspects of how the Island coped without its’ menfolk also adding details to the names of 78 men recorded on the Memorial plaques at St. Peter’s church. Research has shown however, that others were not included, and their names will be recorded on a new plaque. Our research will culminate in an

exhibition at Hayling Island Royal British Legion from 8th-16th November 2014, depicting life during those difficult years. A Service of Dedication for the additional plaque will be held at St. Mary’s Church on 11th November 2014. Alongside the project, Hayling U3A continues with it’s studies of varying subjects including Bridge, Handbells and Family History, with a monthly meeting at the Community Centre on the third Thursday each month at 2.00pm., with various speakers. HAYLING COLLEGE A Place in the World Challenge

Imogen Gervasoni, Sarah Mann, Megan Summers and Holly Trainor from The Hayling College all took part in a business, languages and enterprise challenge run by EBP this month. They had to create a company which relocates families abroad. The research which they began in November was extensive and ranged from

understanding how mortgages work, sourcing a suitable house in Spain and communicating with Spanish companies. They set up their own company which they called Olé and designed a website, logo and developed a business plan. The final challenge was to present their company in Spanish to a panel of multilingual judges. The girls worked extremely hard to compete against thirteen other schools and gain a place in the final as the standard of presentations was extremely high. Not only did the girls go on to win the final, beating teams from Portsmouth High School and Cams Hill (who were the winning school last year) they also won an award for the quality of their presentation skills.

Alcohol Awareness Although, there are a small percentage of teenagers that do in fact behave inappropriately, huge numbers of young people do not get recognised for their respect and well behaved nature towards the community on Hayling. Hayling is a restricted area; As Head Boy and Head Girl, we attended an Alcohol Awareness meeting recently, in relation to CAP, The Community Alcohol Partnership, with our deputies. Everyone agreed that attempting to stop teenagers drinking alcohol altogether was completely unrealistic but that the main cause of antisocial behaviour in the community is alcohol-related. Recently we have been informed about a couple of opportunities that have opened up; This role will have to be approached with maturity as this is a unique opportunity to take advantage of what the

island has to offer. House parties have become increasingly popular with the younger generation and during the CAP meeting the main issue that was raised, was that the party itself is not the problem itself, but the anti-social behaviour after, when they are making their way home. This issue could potentially be improved by sessions that fully educate parents and guardians about the dangers and effects of alcohol, and further education in school about how to keep yourself safe after a party. Our main aim is to gradually reduce the amount of young people on Hayling that behave incompetently under the influence of alcohol. With everyone’s co-operation we hope that The Community Alcohol Partnership succeeds and meets its expectations.

Federation Gymnastics Competition By: Mrs Aylott

On April 1st eight pupils from The Hayling College took part in the federation gymnastics competition at Park Community School. For all the pupils taking part from the college it was their first ever gymnastics competition. They were very nervous but excited about competing against the other federation schools. All the girls performed their pair routines with pride and confidence. In the Under 13 age group Lily Wright and Jessica Tame won a silver medal. Postcode Publications News from Havant Camera Club In February Havant Camera Club held its 3rd print competition of the season, as usual with a visiting judge, who worked very hard to be fair and helpful while still being entertaining, friendly and respectful of people's ideas. Two weeks later there was a different judge for a digital images competition, the modern equivalent of slides, which was informative and interesting except when the judge inexplicably marked down one image because she said it should have been a print! We have also had a talk on panoramic images and advice on how to make them, with detailed advice leaflets available. Another presentation was from a climber, walker and excellent photographer, and Munroist, so that we had many pictures of Scottish mountains. At the beginning of March we held our 4th and final print competition of the season. Once again many fine images from near and far. The judge’s incisive marking has

left a us with a cliff hanger for the overall results of the year! For our most recent meeting we were treated to a fascinating presentation ranging from how to enter your digital image for international exhibitions anywhere in the world to wonderful images in Tanzania, where our speaker uses all his income from photographic activities to fund a school for Masai children. He is one of the very few white photographers accepted by the Masai, and allowed into their villages. We meet at the St John Ambulance HQ, opposite the Rugby Club, on Tuesdays from September to May, with evening outings monthly in summer. You are welcome to attend two meetings without obligation! The Annual Bedhampton Summer Show organisers are looking for tug of war teams to compete at Bidbury Mead on Saturday 5"'July between 2pm and 4.30pm. Could you raise a team of seven, and don't worry about professionals, we are looking for teams from our Borough colleges, pubs, and clubs such as athletic, football, rowing, cricket, hockey, or any groups that can be forming a team. There are no established T of W teams in the area, but 15 years ago there were 91 teams that competed in Hampshire and Wiltshire, now principally because of good old 'health and safety' that has reduced to just two, and they won't be competing. Running involves just lungs and legs, but tug of war involves the whole 550 muscles each body has, and it's something very different, an opportunity to try that completely different sport. Each team will be guaranteed several pulls', competing for

medals Tug of war certainly goes back over 2000 years in China, Egypt and Greece, and frequently part of ancient ceremonies, but nobody knows where it started. In China they believed the sun and moon had a continual, but obviously very fair, tug of war, deciding day from night, and would, the people that is, have 500 people on each end of a 167m rope, whilst the Greeks used it for training for battle. It featured in the Olympics, but only between 1900 and 1920, so please consider playing your small part in keeping it alive it always used to be part of our Summer Show. We all like to have a little flutter now and then. It appeals to something deep within our human nature, and the vast majority of people recognise that any money you win is pretty much a random bonus, so we only spend money we can afford to lose. There’s no harm in your Gran going to the bingo, or having a fiver on the Grand National; Gran mostly goes for a night out with her friends and everyone seems to bet on the National. And so with that in mind, am I the only person who finds the proliferation of ways to gamble in Park Parade and its environs, slightly alarming? This is one of the poorest areas in Hampshire, where a large proportion of households receive benefits in some form or another.Yet the gambling industry seems to be targeting it, whether inadvertently in response to low rent; or deliberately, in the knowledge that poorer people are their best customers, and don’t seem to care what message they are sending out, so long as the money keeps rolling in. I’m sure the industry would argue that they are going about their lawful business, and they are deeply concerned by problem gamblers and offer a number of alternatives to help them resist temptation. But the sad fact is that they only care about the bottom line. So next time you’re walking round the shops, count the ways that people can lose substantial amounts of money, and ask yourself if that is a positive image to send out to visitors, and what message are we sending to our kids?

New Broadmarsh Executive Shuttle Bus Service Appeal to Hayling Islanders for Memorabilia, Mementos and Stories

The 70th anniversary of D-Day is just two months away and organisers of an initiative to fully commemorate this history-changing event are appealing for help. If you have or know of anyone who has memorabilia, mementos or stories from 1944 then you could be instrumental in the commemoration events. Hayling was a throbbing hot-bed of military action as plans were laid for the all-out assault on the Normandy beaches. Mock invasions too place on the beach in front of the now defunct Royal Hotel. Troops were stationed in Northney spending their money in local shops and hostelries. Landing craft were built in Sparkes Boatyard, and the legendary and inventive Mulberry Harbour was assembled on the Island. Meanwhile, neighbouring Portsmouth attracted heavy German bombing, All of these events, and more, left an indelible mark on Hayling’s population and these reminiscences could form a vital part of a college exhibition ‘Memories are Made of This’ which will be assembled at Hayling Library. and aligned to other events taking place in the Borough of Havant. Warblington school unveiled its brand new all-weather pitch with a belated showcase match between a staff XI and a Portsmouth FC Legends team; consisting of former internationals Darren Anderton and Mark Chamberlain as we'll as Lee Bradbury, Andy Awford, Shaun Gale, Guy Butters, Mark Kelly and Scott Green. The Portsmouth team dominated early possession but the two sides were still all square after 10 minutes until Head of Year Roland Barnard handled what would have been a certain goal. Former Portsmouth striker Bradbury stepped up to take the penalty which was miraculously saved by IT Technician Carl Knight. However, Bradbury was quickest to the rebound and made it 1-0 to the visitors. After grabbing the first goal the Portsmouth legends were in the ascendancy and with their pass and move style soon added three more goals. Warblington pulled one back with a superb long distance strike flying in to the top corner of the Portsmouth goal and half-time soon followed. Portsmouth legends started the second half brightly with a goal almost straight from kick off. Warblington soon made it 6-2 with Warren-West coolly sliding the ball past the Portsmouth keeper. The home side then enjoyed a spell of possession and almost clawed back another goal with Head of Sport Rob Andrew’s effort flying just past the upright. During the later stages of the game Darren Anderton was allowed more time on the ball which allowed him to spray passes across the field with great accuracy. Another quick passing move resulted in the second penalty of the game which was expertly dispatched this time leaving the

goalkeeper no chance whatsoever. With the score now 7-2 to the visitors and not long left in the game the home side threw caution to the wind and were able to add to their two goal tally when Lawrence Fisher drove a fizzing shot past the goalkeeper from the edge of the box. A third penalty was then awarded soon after to the away side but the penalty shot flew high and wide. Although the Warblington side had lost 7-3, they were delighted to have drawn the second half 2-2 and that the curtain raising event had been a huge success.

The Forest of Bere Bowmen in Horndean has some outstanding archers. One of these, 15 years old Rebecca Giddings, has just been recognised in the East Hampshire Sports Awards 2014, as Junior Sportswoman of the Year. Rebecca is the Junior National Clout Champion, she is ranked number 3 in the country in the Under 16s age group by Archery GB, and she is Hampshire County Junior Champion at Field Archery, Longbow, Under 16 Target Archery and Clout Archery. She is also the current holder of many County and Club records. Rebecca’s equipment is sponsored by KG Archery. Each year East Hampshire District Council seeks nominations from a broad range of categories within its area across all sports, abilities and disabilities and all ages. This includes Bentley, Alton, Bordon and Grayshott in the north; Liphook, Liss and Petersfield in the middle; and East Meon, Clanfield, Horndean and Rowlands Castle in the south – a population of around 110,000. The Forest of Bere Bowmen nominated Rebecca for her achievements over the last year. The results were announced at the awards ceremony held at the Old Thorns Manor Hotel in Liphook on Thursday 27 February. Fred Dinenage, MBE and TV broadcaster, was the master of ceremonies

and Rebecca received her award from Peter Norfolk OBE, Paralympic Tennis Gold Medallist. Havant Rugby Football Club – A Late Season Review From Laurence Warren-West

After a more than shaky start to their campaign Havant RFC looked to many like a side certain to be involved in a relegation dog fight come the end of the season. However this column in November 2013 said that the team was galvanising as a unit and looked capable of moving up the league, helped by the coach’s decision to appoint Joel Knight as captain. Since the turn of the New Year the Hooks Lane side has put together an altogether better string of results. Even after the unfortunate loss of key back row forward Jarrard Hayler to Royal Marines training, the club were able to record bonus point victories over Cobham, Beckanham, Chobham, Hove and Haywards Heath, as well as two convincing wins over Staines. Thus their league status for next season has been assured with games to spare. In the run of good results Havant were

also able to beat close rivals Gosport in the Hampshire Cup semi-final. After a strong first half Gosport had the lead at half time; however, a much improved second half from Havant saw them win the game 34-22 to set up a final against old rivals National League 3 side Basingstoke, to be played at Basingstoke’s Pack Lane ground (postcode RG22 5HH) on April 26th. Kick-off is at 3.00 pm. Havant are hopeful of producing an upset in the final and using that to kick start a promotion drive in the coming season to restore their National League 3 status: A mouthwatering prospect that would set in train all the pre-season planning and preparations that would be involved. Postcode Publications Team 3,2,1 Olympic Campaign Sophie Weguelin and Eilidh McIntyre, Team 3,2,1, contacted Postcode Publications on returning from their triumphant gold medal performance in Miami in January. They told us that they flew out to their winter training camp at the Club Nautic Arenal in S’Arenal, on the Island of Mallorca which is about 15 minutes from the airport at Palma to meet up with their new 470 Olympic class boat when it arrived in Palma on 8th February. Sophie said “We love going back to Palma, it’s a fantastic training venue. Having been back for so many years, it really feels like a second home there! We had 3 training camps through February and March, each lasting between 5 and 10 days, which allows us enough time to settle in, get into a routine and make the camp as productive as possible. We soon had the boat unpacked and rigged up. Training Camp1 was the official launch of the new boat and she was great” After each camp the girls return to the UK for a few days allowing them to get into a routine, stay on top of planning, organisation and in touch with family and friends. However Sophie told us that their training plans for the Princess Sofia Regatta in Palma from 30th March – 5th April, the second World Cup event of 2014 were abruptly halted during Camp 2 which took place between 25th February and 2nd April. After 2 great days of training, tragedy struck on day 3. In a breeze of 18-20 knots and a heavy sea,

Eilidh was badly hurt in an accident while manoeuvring in the dinghy in big waves. Eilidh was knocked by an angry wave and landed on the tip of her index finger and was in a bad way. She was taken ashore in the rib, and straight to hospital. After a small operation, and a large amount of pain she was patched up and returned to the UK for some TLC. She saw a hand specialist who confirmed that she had broken the tip of her finger. She had an operation to help it heal in place, and cannot sail for 4-6 weeks. Sophie explained that although the set back will mean missing the next World Cup event, the Princess Sofia Regatta in Palma, it is not a disaster. It will be difficult not being there to test themselves against the fleet, but it will give them a different perspective and allow them to build on their fitness for the coming season. Eilidh is due to have the wire removed from her finger soon and the girls plan to compete at the final World Cup event in Hyeres, France at the end of April, but will review it nearer the event depending upon Eilidh’s recovery. Sophie and Eilidh were at Hayling Island Sailing Club in April for a Team 3,2,1 fund raising event. They shared with their supporters, sponsors, friends and families what their campaign will entail, some of the highs and lows (including a close-up of Eilidh’s broken finger!), where the journey will take them and what it will enable them to achieve.

History Making Hawks? This report is from Hawkeye

Havant & Waterlooville FC is currently in its 16th season since its amalgamation from the smaller local clubs Havant Town FC and Waterlooville FC. Although in their debut season (1998-1999) the Hawks won the Southern League Southern Division, the HWFC Trophy cabinet has resembled Mother Hubbard’s cupboard. That is not to suggest that the side has been treading water since their conception. The club have progressed enormously since those early days and boast a stadium with an ‘A’ Grade rating and no financial debts. Much of the success has been in various cup competitions without necessarily winning them; notably the 4th Round appearance in 2007-2008 against Liverpool (current Premiership Champions Elect!?). This season the Hawks are well placed to achieve entry into the National Conference League, via the Conference South play-offs. At the time of writing the Hawks have worked there way into the final play-off position (5th) with just seven matches left to play. Of these five will be played at Westleigh Park. With destiny firmly in their own hands failure to qualify for the end of season promotion play-offs would be a disappointing end to an exciting season. The format of the play-offs would mean a two-legged Semi-Final with the winners

going into a winner take all final. Entry into the National Conference would place the Hawks just one step away from the Football League (watch out Pompey). Manager Lee Bradbury and his Assistant Shaun Gale have developed an impressive array of talent in the current squad, which contains a good blend of experience and young progressive talent. The good form of the Hawks has been based on a solid defensive approach that has witnessed seventeen clean sheets in their last thirty five matches. Such is the standing of the current Hawks squad that Manager Lee Bradbury has been able to sign Liechtenstein International goalkeeper Benji Buchel in the past couple of months. The County Sports Awards winners were revealed on Wednesday 2 April at a ceremony hosted by Sport Hampshire & IOW at Southampton Football Club. The event was presented by Kris Temple from BBC South Today. and the evening began with a look back at a number of projects and campaigns that Sport Hampshire & IOW have been involved with that have all built on the legacy of 2012 including: Project 500, Hampshire Games, Do More Be More, Community Games, Hampshire Olympic & Paralympic Legacy, Disability Coaching Network, RoadSHIOW, Workplace Challenge. Havant had winners in two the 18

award categories. Elliott Wells and Jake Todd of Hayling Island Sailing Club won the Junior Team of the Year Award for sailing and Peter Darts representing athletics won the Official of the Year Award. Elliott Wells & Jake Todd were selected in 2012 to the Royal Yachting Association National Junior Sailing Squad for the second year running (Elliott being the youngest Junior Sailing Squad member in history). Squad membership gives access to the facilities and coaches at the National Sailing Academy in Weymouth. In 2013 Elliott and Jake competed at the RS Feva Euromed Championship in Malta collecting their first Gold of the year and then onto the National Championship and Inland National Championship picking up Gold medals at both events. In late July the boys went to Italy to represent GBR in the RS Feva World Championships competing against the 180 boats of the world's best junior sailors. After completing 15 races over 5 days the boys were once again on the podium collecting Silver medals. In August they switched to competing nationally at Youth level in the 29er class dinghy (a performance dinghy for juniors

with Olympic aspirations) achieving a commendable top 10 result. Again Elliott was the youngest competitor in the fleet. For winning the Feva National Championships the boys were invited to compete in the prestigious Endeavour Trophy - the Champion of Champions regatta - against reigning adult National Champions. Elliott and Jake as the youngest pairing achieved 11th place against 26 other pairings of top experts in sail boat racing in Great Britain. Without doubt this was viewed in the sport as another highlight of their outstanding year. Major overall achievements: • RS Feva Inland Champs - GOLD, • RS Feva National Champs – GOLD • RS Feva EuroMed Champs – GOLD • RS Feva World Champs – SILVER Peter Darts, athletics winner of the Official of the Year Award, is a Field Judge for National and International athletics meetings. He is a qualified Track Judge, Starters Assistant and Field Tutor. He holds a Level 4 Track & Field qualification, the highest possible qualification for British Athletics Officials.

Peter officiated at the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, the 2013 Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games. He had many other National appointments in 2013, plus a European appointment as a Field Judge. Also in 2013 Peter was appointed National Technical Delegate at the England Athletics under 15 and 17 Championships at Bedford. For 2014 Peter has been appointed as a Field Official at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Peter delivers a range of courses on a nationwide basis and is supportive of local athletics at Club, County and Hampshire Schools events and serves on the Hampshire Officials sub-committee.

Arts & Crafts for young people The Spring Arts Centre in Havant gained some funding to bring creative activities to young people in the local community so Motiv8 worked in partnership with them to identify creative activities and reach young people through Motiv8’s main youth clubs in Leigh Park, Wecock Farm, Stakes and Hayling Island. An arts professional, Matt West, was appointed and he worked with a steering group of Motiv8 young people to plan workshops and trips. These young people are also undertaking their Arts Award certificate for their work on the project. Groups of young people taking part in a graffiti workshop, went to see Warhorse at Southampton Mayflower Theatre. They had an ice dance training session, been to see performances at the Spring Arts centre and more. Future plans include a range of music workshops and inviting a stand-up comedian to tour the Motiv8 youth hubs. There was also an opportunity to attend a Creative Futures careers event at the Spring recently to experience the range of career opportunities in the arts and get information from local colleges about creative arts courses. Leigh Park DIVERT project success

Following the successful completion of the Leigh Park DIVERT project, a special evening was put on to celebrate the achievements of the girls involved. The event was attended by the Mayor & Mayoress of Havant, local councillors, parents, police and funders were all present at the event. The girls were praised for how well they presented themselves at the event and their achievements shared. Following the project the girls will all continue to build on the foundations of DIVERT and work hard to encourage and support one another to continue with their

success. The DIVERT programme is all about reducing anti-social behaviour and is a partnership working between the Police, Motiv8 and other groups in Havant. It aims to help a targeted group of young people recognise risks, make informed choices and identify the potential consequences of their actions. It was piloted in Wecock Farm in early 2013 with great success. The latest DIVERT programme is in Leigh Park with members of the group all making significant progress since the start in autumn 2013. The DIVERT group gave something back at Christmas by offering a helping hand at the soup kitchen at Buckland United Reformed Church. The group worked tirelessly to sort through and give out clothes to homeless people as well as helping to serve meals. Some of the group also went out on the streets of Portsmouth to give hot drinks and food to people sleeping rough. DIVERT is supported by Hampshire County Council, Havant Borough Council and the Hampshire Police & Crime Commissioner. 6 Steps to Transforming Parenting Skills

On 7 March 2014, Transform worked in partnership with Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service to hold a day of activity at Havant Fire station for parents. The aim was to develop parenting skills through problem solving and challenging activities with a focus on developing skills across 6 main areas: effective parenting, leadership, working as a team, managing conflict, listening to others and coping with new situations. The final challenge was to climb a ladder 13 metres up the tower (equivalent to 3 stories high). Everyone achieved this and some even went hands-free and performed a leg lock! Working together to solve problems and linking strategies back to people’s home life has helped parents to be more confident when dealing with issues at home. Motiv8 works alongside Barnardo’s, Step by Step and Family Lives to deliver Transform, Hampshire’s intensive family support programme. Transform aims to help adults move into employment, improve children’s school attendance, and reduce crime and anti-social behaviour. Transform workers provide emotional support, information and guidance, practical handson help for families as well as co-ordinating a package of support. Currently, Transform supports about 160 families across Hampshire.

12 Hampshire & Isle of Wing Air Cadets gain their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Twelve Air Cadets from across Hampshire & the Isle of Wight attended St James’s Palace, in March to accept their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award from HRH Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh. They all met HRH in the Throne Room at St James's Palace and then received their Certificates from the BBC's Country File Presenter Ellie Harrison. Also in attendance was Benedict Cumberbatch, Darcey Bussell and Larry Lamb to present other awards. An impromptu photo call outside with Ellie Harrison with all the Hampshire Cadets helped commemorate the day for all. A great day and one which all recipients should proudly remember for the rest of their lives.

Air Cadets complete their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Expedition on the Isle of Wight Over 100 members of Hampshire & Isle of Wight took part in a two day Duke of Edinburgh's Award expedition on a gloriously sunny March weekend on the Isle of Wight. Fifteen cadets from Havant and Waterlooville Squadrons took part in their Bronze practice and qualifying expeditions covering a route from Newport to Freshwater. High spirits and excellent teamwork made for a great weekend for all. Some interesting dress styles emerged from several squadrons. Cadets are now looking forward to the next DofE weekend in early May when both Bronze and Silver expeditions are being planned.

Cut out your fabric to size 1. With the wrong side of the fabric facing you, measure 1.5” from the top of the long side of the rectangle and put a mark. Then make another mark 0.5” along. The Woodmancote Pub A TREASURE AWAITING DISCOVERY

Two years ago this gastro pub was fully refurbished and extended. The decor is completely unique with themed areas and curiosities in every nook but it is still a village pub with a 150 seating restaurant. An excellent range of wines and beers including their own "woodies" bitter are available. About three miles north/east of Emsworth the village is easy to find.

We arrived early one weekday evening - even at this time there were plenty of people in the bar and restaurant. We were warmly welcomed and shown to our table. The food here is traditional but with 11 starters, sharing boards and 17 main courses to choose from, you have a great choice - wow! Oh there is also a daily "special" menu as well. All tastes and special diets are also catered for.

Spoilt for choice of starters, I finally chose a Box of Baked Camembert and my partner selected a Trio of Smoked Fish on a bed of Potato Salad. The presentation was an art form in itself and also delicious. Chicken a la King and Liver and Bacon were our choices for the mains which also arrived beautifully presented and again really well cooked. We were starting to struggle when the "sweets" menu arrived, however I plumped for Bread and Butter Pudding laced with Rum and Banana and my partner chose a selection of Fruit Sorbet:: mouthwatering! Coffee completed a most

enjoyable meal. By the time we were ready to leave the whole establishment was buzzing and vibrant. This is a really good destination for great food and atmosphere - a country drive included as well. They have themed nights, special Sunday lunches and can also cater for a special celebration - give them 48 hours’ notice and they will even bake a cake for you as well! This attention to detail reflects their attitude towards making a visit to The Woodmancote "very special indeed." We will be back!

Emma Bailey from Havant has shone the spotlight on Type 1 Diabetes in Parliament Emma Bailey from Havant travelled to Westminster on 11 March to speak about life with type 1 diabetes at a major Houses of Parliament event. 10 year old Emma, was chosen to attend Type 1 Parliament by JDRF – the global type 1 diabetes charity. She was one of sixty adults and children who live with the condition that was selected from across the country to represent their constituencies. The event was sponsored by Lilly. Type 1 diabetes is a chronic and

challenging condition. The exact cause is unclear, but it is not linked to lifestyle or diet. A child diagnosed with it at the age of five faces up to 19,000 insulin injections and 50,000 finger prick tests by the time they are 18. The condition affects 400,000 people in the UK – equivalent to more than 600 people in every constituency – and incidence is growing rapidly, particularly in those under five years old. Emma met with David Willetts MP to explain the impact the condition has on people’s lives. She said ‘I loved talking to him about how living with diabetes affects my

life and I asked him to put more money into finding a cure’ She added ‘We had a lot of fun learning how to use twitter and meeting other people with type 1 diabetes but I loved being able to tell people what it is like living with type 1 diabetes and why I want a cure.’ Emma was first diagnosed with the condition in 2006. She said ‘I was drinking lots and feeling very tired and ill, mummy took me to the doctors and they diagnosed type 1 diabetes’ Karen Addington, Chief Executive of JDRF, said: “Thank you to everyone who

attended the event and made it such a resounding success. The incidence of type 1 diabetes is going up and so is the cost – but UK Government spending on type 1 diabetes research is falling. Thankfully, more people are now uniting on this issue and we can be hopeful of achieving significant change.”

WARBLINGTON SCHOOL Realising potential: unlocking success Pompey Legends’ Match By: Mr Andrew, Subject Leader, Physical Education

In February Warblington School were lucky enough to host a Pompey Legends’ side playing against our staff in a celebration of the opening of our new 3G Astroturf pitch. Alan Knight attended our ‘Breaking Ground Ceremony’ back in the summer and was kind enough to offer to organise a Pompey Legends’ side to play us when the pitch was ready. Alan’s team consisted of Darren Anderton, Mark Chamberlain, Andy Awford, Lee Bradbury, Shaun Gale, Mark Kelly, Guy Butters and Scott Green. The Warblington side consisted of teachers past and present and a healthy crowd of students and their families, numbering into the hundreds, watched a very entertaining game. We will always look back on the game and remember the second half being 2-2 but

ultimately it was still a pleasure to lose 7-3 to such a talented team of ex-professionals. I would like to thank Alan Knight for offering us the game and organising such a great bunch of legends to play against. I would also like to thank all of the Warblington staff, students and parents who supported the game. There have already been suggestions that there might be another match at the end of the school year, so watch this space.

Por tsmouth Music Festival By: Miss Blundell, Music At the Portsmouth Music Festival Warblington School’s KS4 Band ‘The Raptures’ delivered a fantastic performance which saw guitarist Oliver May and Bassist Henry Street awarded with Best Guitarist and Best Bassist of the event. The Band then went on to win the overall award of Best Band as well as a Life Time Achievement Award for their hard work and musicianship over the past four years. Also taking part was Frankie Good, who was praised on her outstanding vocals and her natural confidence and stage presence.

Frankie won the John Gleadall Cup for her solo performance and was awarded a distinction grade. Both the Raptures and Frankie Good won places to perform at the Gala Show at the King’s Theatre in March.

Sixty-two of our More Able Mathematicians took part in the Intermediate Maths Challenge in February. The results are now in and there are some incredible scores! Following his success in the Senior Maths Challenge, Henry Street,Year 11, achieved the best result in school again, picking up a Gold Certificate and entry to the next round in the competition. Oliver May,Year 11 and Dougal Russell,Year 9, also achieved Gold Certificates and progress to the next round. These are outstanding achievements and we wish these students well on the next stage. Daniel Faulkner,Year 10, achieved a Silver Certificate and thirteen other students have picked up Bronze Certificates. Congratulations to you all.

Warblington School has been delivering the Duke of Edinburgh Award since 2008. Since beginning our journey six years ago, the scheme has gone from strength to strength. The Award encourages young people to develop the skills and attitudes they need to become more rounded, confident adults. During the Autumn Term ten of our Year 11s successfully completed their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. The range of activities our students undertook included volunteering for the Scout and Guide Associations, working in the Sue Ryder charity shop and sports coaching. The

students have learnt new skills in gardening, cooking and power boating. They have taken part in physical activities including ballet and team sports. The highlight was completing a two day walking expedition in the New Forest. The Award has helped these students gain self-belief, self-confidence, a sense of identity, responsibility and a real awareness of their strengths.

HOW TO SOLVE A “CRYPTIC CLUE” CROSSWORD The first in a series of articles by our crossword complier Michael Curtis for crossword fans The intention of a “cryptic clue” crossword compiler is to produce a puzzle that a moderately well-educated person with a love of and interest in language and problem-solving can complete, without recourse to a dictionary or reference book. The word “cryptic” means “secret” and clues in cryptic puzzles are just like that. To understand them, you have to read them in a very devious way. What the clue appears to be defining on the surface is designed as a distraction and is almost never what it really means. However, the clue will always tell you what the answer is, even if you have to twist your brain inside out to read the clue in the correct manner. Getting Started The best way to get started is to study previous grids and analyse the answers. This will help generate a list of the particular signposts used by the compiler. Things to Remember: • Most cryptic clues provide at least two paths to the solution. The trick is knowing how to

decipher the meaning. Generally, each clue will contain a definition of the answer and a cryptic means of reaching it. The great majority of cryptic clues are meaningless if read conventionally. What the clue appears to say when read normally is a distraction and usually has nothing to do with the clue answer. The challenge is to find the way of reading the clue that leads to the solution. The typical clue consists of two parts – the definition and the word play. It provides two ways of getting to the answer. The definition is, in essence, the same as any “straight” crossword, a synonym for the answer. The other part, “the subsidiary indication”, or “wordplay”, provides an alternative route to the answer. The solver needs to find the boundary between definition and wordplay and insert a mental pause there. In the same way, ignore all punctuation. The punctuation is there to make the crossword clue read like a real sentence or expression; it has no

Hayling Island Donkey Derby Saturday 31st May Four years ago the Lions Club on Hayling Island wondered how to provide a low cost day full of fun for all sections of the family. There will be some readers who will recall the Donkey Derby’s run by Lions in the seventies on the field which is now our HBC headquarters. They were great days and Hayling Lions decided not to copy but to try to improve on them The day had to have a variety of entertainment and satisfy all family members. Latest Look: No make-up makeup! This look is created by working with the natural tones of your skin and subtly enhancing your features.Your goal is to achieve a natural, flawless finish that doesn’t look ‘done’. Firstly: Create your base Preparing your skin is the first step. After cleansing and moisturising your skin, use a primer to smooth out the skins texture. Select a light reflecting concealer pen to cover any areas of pigmentation or blemishes and blend. This may be enough if you have good skin. If using a foundation, use a brush to blend it smoothly over your face including lips and eyes. Use a shade as close to your natural skin tone as possible or a little lighter. Pro Tip – When going for a natural look, avoid shimmering products. Next: Cheeks and Lips Select a subtle toned blush (rosy hues for pink toned skin, peach/coral hues for yellow toned skin) and dot along the cheeks where you naturally blush. If using a cream product, blend with your fingers or with a brush if using powder. Avoid creating a contoured line as the cheeks should look naturally flushed. If you’ve used a cream blush, you can use this on the lips too. Match your lips to the subtle colour on your cheeks. A tinted gloss is fine but avoid a liner as this appears too ‘done’. Lastly: Eyes Some eye shadow primers are perfect for this look but don’t use any that are too pearly. Use a grey or brown liner at the base of your outer top lashes to give a thicker look but doesn’t look like a line. For hooded eyes you could use a matt shadow to contour your brow bone and

make the eyes appear bolder. Apply a coating of mascara that’s one shade darker than your natural lashes and comb through to prevent the clogged look. Enhance sparse brows by brushing a brow powder through but avoid creating a defined line. Finally use a matt, translucent powder to ‘set’ the look. Season Trend: Orange lips This look can actually be tailored to suit anyone. For those who shy away from statement lips, lip sheen in a tangerine hue is a good way of introducing the shade. For skins with strong pink/red tones, opt for shades that contain red pigments, so the brighter, deeper oranges. For yellow/olive tones, you should find that most shades suit your skin. Keep the eyes fairly subtle in the daytime with the emphasis on your lips. A slick of liner and some mascara is all you need.You then have the option to add a more dramatic look for the evening. Blush is a must with orange lips and we like a coral shade to pick up the pigments in the lip colour. Too much bronzer with an orange lip can be too ‘muddy’ looking so keep it fresh! Pro Tip – Brush your foundation over your lips before applying your lipstick/liner. Blot after one coat and reapply to improve the longevity of your lip colour. Bare Faced Cheat... With prom and wedding season in full swing, it’s all about getting camera ready when it comes to make-up. There are several tricks when it comes to highlighting your best features and we’ve all seen examples of them on our favourite celebs. Want a slimmer nose, a rounder face and fuller lips? Using a highlighter in the correct areas can make it happen. Adding a highlighter to the cupids bow can give the illusion of a fuller top lip. Blending it down the centre of the nose can make it appear longer and narrower. Applying a highlighter below the brows can help open up the eye socket and make the eyes pop.
