Hayling Remembers Remembrance Sunday dawned crisp and bright on Hayling Island. Although chilly, the sun was out as some 150 people marched up the length of Elm Grove, Hayling Island to the Cenotaph at the junction of St Mary's Road. Meeting the parade at the Cenotaph were around another 50 people who had come to pay their respects.

A short but moving service was conducted by Reverend Pennie Payne, the associate priest of St Mary's Church. Then wreaths were laid on behalf of the many organisations represented. The first wreath was laid by the Deputy Mayor of Havant, Councillor Marjorie Smallcorn, followed by the Royal British Legion Branch President Alderman Trevor Dryer.

contingent from Thorney Island, who as always were much appreciated by the crowds lining the route. Those marching ranged in age from the smallest Brownies and Cubs to the oldest Veterans. It was as always a very moving occasion when the residents of Hayling Island could show their respect for those who have serve our country.

HAYLING BILLY NOSTALGIA November 2nd marked the fiftieth anniversary of the last public train service of the Hayling Billy. For many people today the memory of riding behind the small Terrier engines on their way for a day on a sandy beach is something they cannot forget.

The journey was a treat in itself especially the excitement of going over the bridge and probably throwing stones into

the sea below. Proof of this nostalgia was shown when an estimated 1,000 people attended a recent commemorative exhibition at the Spring Arts and Heritage Centre in East Street, Havant, to see a wide range of pictures, models and other memorabilia.

As part of this celebration Ralph Cousins has produced a booklet containing over 130 illustrations entitled ‘The Hayling Island Branch line’ at the modest price of £5 which may be obtained at the Centre.’

Newtown House Hotel is an 18th Century converted farmhouse with 28 bedrooms at Hayling Island.

Their newly opened Il Giardino Restaurant with sumptuous surroundings and candlelit tables create a truly intimate atmosphere and sets the scene for what developed into a most enjoyable culinary experience. We visited the restaurant one cold and breezy wintry Thursday evening and were surprised to witness an almost full restaurant - word of mouth is starting to work - there is good food available here I thought!

A traditional four course a la carte menu was presented - 5 antipasti dishes, 5 Primi Piatti (first course) dishes and 4 Secondi Piatti (second course) dishes plus 5 Dolci (dessert) gives a very comprehensive range of Italian food there is also a special children’s menu as well.

I shared an antipasti dish and my colleagues ordered squid with chilli aioli and grilled lemon - "very well cooked" they said. We decided to order a main course from the first and second course menus - 7 hour slow roasted lamb was my choice, my colleagues ordered spaghetti tossed with crab, chilli garlic and Parmesan, gurnard fillet with tempura broccoli (delicious) and dry aged sirloin steak with garlic and herb roasted potatoes and wild mushrooms.

Brilliant food was enjoyed with a bottle of Chianti. The portions were generous

Hayling Island firm take the lead on new Google initiative Hayling Island based web specialists, OKO Digital, have been chosen by Google to be the first UK partners on a new initiative being run by the international search giant. The new Google AdSense Certified Partners Programme was only publicly launched at the end of October.

Globally there were just 13 partner companies before OKO Digital were approved for inclusion in November.

‘We were stunned at becoming the UK’s first partners. We knew we had the expertise, but it isn’t the sort of opportunity that comes up very often when you are based on Hayling Island,’ said Mat Bennett, Managing Director of OKO Digital.

The new concept helps website owners benefit from being part of Google’s online advertising network. That network covers millions of websites and apps globally including The Hayling Islander’s own

haylingtoday.co.uk. The partners programme provides support for mid-sized publishers to grow their involvement.

‘We’ve worked with Google on related areas for over 10 years now allowing us to build a unique set of skills around some of their technologies. We were put forward for the programme after a good match between us and Google was spotted.’

So far seven of the team, all based at 58a Station Road, Hayling Island, have successfully passed qualifying exams for the programme. Mat added: ‘We hope to be putting more people forward for the training soon - both the existing team and hopefully more as the team expands.’

so only one of my colleagues ordered ice cream. I however wanted to sample Panettone Pudding - an Italian twist on a favourite of mine bread and butter pudding - it was really sweet and delicious. Coffees all round concluded a most enjoyable evening.

With attentive service and a very comprehensive wine list I can heartily recommend a visit to this family run hotel. I am sure I will take the trip over the bridge to this restaurant again - a welcome addition to a clutch of quality restaurants within the area. Women across the country are to be allowed to check their partner’s police record to see if they have a violent past.

Clare's Law was trialed for 12 months from September 2012 to allow women to check police records to see if a partner has a violent past. The pilot scheme ran in Greater Manchester, Gwent, Wiltshire and Nottingham, where around 400 women were given information. Now it is to be rolled out nationally and the law is expected to take effect from March 2014.

In the last year, 88 women have been killed by a violent partner or ex-partner.

The national scheme will ensure that more people can make informed decisions about their relationship.

It is important to note that Clare’s Law is very careful in the way in which information is disclosed and all of the Police Forces that have piloted this scheme have taken their role in protecting the data they hold very seriously. The police will not disclose information to you, or a third party, unless they consider you to be at risk of harm from your partner. They will take immediate action to protect you should they come to this conclusion.

A VERY PRODUCTIVE SUMMER FOR ROWLANDS CASTLE PAINTING SOCIETY This year the weather has been mostly clement, with members of the Society enjoying the outside painting meetings which took place across the region. A big ‘thank you' goes to Gill Dollery our Principal who has worked hard to organise the outings. We are also very grateful to Nicky Verrecchia, a resident of Rowlands Castle for taking on the role of Vice Principal.

The Society is now meeting in the

Parish Hall, Links Lane, Rowlands Castle for a programme of meetings full of variety to keep all the artists busy and involved. New members are very welcome to join us and now is the time to enrol. If you’re interested, visit the website for further details.You do not have to be a resident of Rowlands Castle to join.

The meetings are held on Tuesdays from 2pm to 4pm (Life drawing) and on alternate Tuesdays there is a workshop

from 2pm to 4pm, followed by an evening demonstration by a visiting artist 7.30pm to 9.30pm. These are open to the public who are welcome to attend, there is a fee of £2 to non-members. Members can also look forward to the Christmas Party, always a great evening, with a Holiday painting competition and a Christmas card competition with a lovely buffet and refreshments provided. The Spring Exhibition and Sale takes place on the 15th

and 16th March 2014 and is an excellent opportunity for the artists to showcase their work.

Musical Masterpiece Performance at The Kings Theatre Portsmouth Grammar School Tapped Troubles Away With a Musical Masterpiece at The Kings Theatre with their production of Mack & Mabel.

After the huge success of last year’s musical, The Producers, for 2013 the golden age of the silent movies was visited with the backdrop one of musical theatre’s most fiery, compelling love stories, that of pioneering film director Mack Sennett and waitress-turned star Mabel Normand.

musical scores with songs that include I Won’t Send You Roses and Tap Your Troubles Away, Mack & Mabel takes in laughter, tears, comedy and heartbreak as it shows the making of Sennett’s uproarious silent comedies – featuring stars such as Fatty Arbuckle, The Bathing Beauties and The Keystone Cops – and delves in to the complex lives of those behind them.

with was a huge challenge given how popular and successful it was,” says Director of Drama at PGS, Sally Filho. “We chose Mack & Mabel as it gives us the opportunity to explore a really fascinating era of film history, and we have incorporated film into the live theatre performance. In the magical style of early film pioneer Georges Méliès, characters burst from screen to stage. There were great comic segments in the show as well as moments of personal tragedy which took the audience on quite an emotional journey.”

The cast featured pupils ranging in age from 12 – 18 years, and most of the technical team behind the scenes are also pupils.

“It has been and absolute pleasure to be working with the pupils on another large scale musical,” commented John-Paul McCrohon, Director-in-Residence at the school. “Their professionalism, commitment and passion to bring this show to the Kings Theatre is remarkable, and I believe that together we created a unique interpretation of this musical masterpiece.”

For some people it is difficult to talk about things they believe in or have experienced and it is for this reason that WONDER WOMEN was set up – a discussion group for women who wonder!

The group is open to ALL women of any age who wonder about things, women of all beliefs and none – all we ask is that you come with an open mind. There will be no attempt at ‘conversion’ to a particular belief – everything will be discussed in an open, honest and non-threatening way.

The group is very mixed with people having a variety of beliefs and interests – which makes for some lively discussions!

Some sessions are led by an outside speaker which is fascinating – but every evening is different and every evening is fun and there is always lots of laughter.

If you feel you might like to come along and see what it is all about, then why not join us at the Dickinson Centre, Park Community School, from 7.30 – 9.30 pm on a Tuesday evening.You may also worry that you won’t know anyone there – but it is such a friendly group that you will soon feel you have known people for years. We ask for a weekly donation of £3 per person to cover the cost of room hire and tea/coffee and biscuits.

Counselling, Support and Information for young people aged 11-25 Off The Record provides free and confidential counselling and support to young people aged 11-25. Clients who access the service are affected by a multitude of problems including abuse, alcoholism, bullying, bereavement, eating disorders, self harm, mental health difficulties and violent behaviour. Off The Record is needed now more than ever before.

In the last year alone 2082 young people have turned to the service for help. Many were referred by local GPs who are unable to provide long term support, and by schools and other professionals working with young people. Young people mostly make direct access. The service is constantly busy, with a current waiting list of over 60 young people.

Off The Record is facing it’s most severe financial challenge in recent times, as local authorities and other funders tighten their belts and cut critical funding, despite relying heavily on the services the organisation provides. The incredibly loyal and dedicated staff and volunteers are determined to continue providing these vital service to young people. A massive effort on their part is helping to secure enough funding to make up for these cuts, but it is providing a huge task. Regrettably the core staff team have accepted redundancy from 22nd November - a rigorous restructuring plan is in hand.

College students have launched a £30,000 project that will tell the stories of soldiers who died in the First World War. Havant Sixth Form College has been awarded the Heritage Lottery Fund grant to produce a documentary film tracing the stories of soldiers whose names are listed on Havant War Memorial. The film will be supported by a book and interactive website that will develop the stories in more detail and feature archive material unearthed during the research.

The students, working with Year 9 students from Crookhorn, Horndean, Park Community and Warblington, attended the launch of the Havant’s Heroes project at the College in November. The event began with a display of materials from the World War 1 Remembrance Centre at Fort Widley and First World War food, including Bovril and hard tack biscuits.

A series of workshops were designed to give students a sense of what life was like in Britain a hundred years ago. This included workshops on social history and the impact of war poetry on our understanding of the conflict, a performance poetry workshop from Portsmouth’s first teenage Poet Laureate

Joe McQuilken, and two drama workshops from Forest Forge Theatre Company, sponsored by The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre in Havant.

The event ended with a sing-along to wartime favourites such as It’s A Long Way to Tipperary and Pack Up Your Troubles and a rendition of the Last Post. Each student was given a certificate of commemoration for a soldier from Havant or Hampshire who died in the war and asked to think about their lives before creating a memorial wall.

Steve Murray, Curriculum Director for the Arts, said: “The launch of Havant’s Heroes was successful in giving students the context of the war and helped them begin to appreciate the sacrifices that were made by ordinary families whose lives were changed forever. We are all now looking forward to continuing our research and beginning pre-production work on the film in early 2014.”

HEALTH & WELL-BEING Mick Lyons is a true inspiration to us all “People thought I would run out of steam, but it’s my mum who drives me to carry on” World Make a Difference day in October celebrated individuals that have made a difference at Portsmouth Hospitals welcome Mick Lyons…

Having now reached his 71st birthday, which ties in with his 30th year as a champion fundraiser, Mick Lyons, founder of The Rocky Appeal, talks about his overwhelming past victories in fundraising, raising over £13 million for PHT. It all began when Mick was working as a policeman in Portsmouth Police Division in 1981 and his parents were living on the Isle of Wight. Mick started to notice a decline in his mother’s health and following six months of trailing in-and-out of the doctor’s surgery for a diagnosis, it was revealed that Grace Lyons had contracted bowel cancer, and due to the delayed diagnosis it had spread across her entire body.

Grace sadly passed away a month after diagnosis weighing just three stone; a fact which infuriates Mick who believes that if a CAT scanner had been used to detect the disease sooner, his mother’s life could have been saved.

Grace’s death motivated Mick on his journey of over 30 years of champion fundraising for Queen Alexandra Hospital After 11 months of pleading to PHT and after two-and-a-half years of fundraising, QA was able to afford the CAT scanner at a cost of £1million.

Mick says inspiringly, “once I get my teeth into something, I stick with it. I was overwhelmed with emotion when the hospital decided to name the scanner after my late mother.” Mick was then awarded the British Empire Medal by Hampshire Constabulary for his fundraising efforts for both the Police Dependants Trust and QA. As a result of this tremendous triumph, it set the bar high for PHT. Fundraising is a joint involvement with the aid of the general public, and Mick cannot be thankful enough to the many people who have helped him raise the incredible £12 million that he has reached today.

Fundraisers for The Rocky Appeal are awarded with a shield if they reach a target of £1,000 which is presented to them as a memento and keepsake for their efforts in raising this amount of money. To date 650 shields have been presented. The idea being

that these are issued, often with publicity to raise the awareness of the Rocky Appeal.

Following Mick’s success with non-stop fundraising over 30 years, further lifesaving equipment has been provided for QA and St Mary’s Hospital. Mick clearly has a passion for his local hospitals and wishes to raise as much money as possible to provide equipment that the hospitals would not normally have. To date Mick has raised funds for many equipment projects.

At the age of 71 Mick should lean back and settle into retirement, reflecting on his overwhelming achievements over the years.

Instead he has set himself another goal. This time The Rocky Appeal hopes to raise £2.5 million towards the da Vinci Robot, which

will be for robotic digital keyhole surgery.

This offers countless benefits, including a quicker recovery than traditional methods, less pain and infection, less invasive, and improved precision and efficiency, making QA one of the few hospitals in the country to offer this service. I hope you found the last exercises about “Rotator Cuff Impingement Syndrome” useful. In this issue I am going to give you some advice about Frozen Shoulder and exercises to help too.

A frozen shoulder is a stiff and initially painful shoulder, often starting without an apparent cause. The loose bag (capsule)

around the shoulder joint becomes inflamed. The capsule then appears to tighten or shrink. This tightening combined with the pain restricts the movement.

There are 3 main phases; 1) Painful phase (which can last from 2 to 9 months) The pain often starts gradually and builds up. It may be felt on the outside of the upper arm and can extend down to the elbow and even into the forearm.

2) Stiff phase (which can last from 4 to 12 months)

“Treat yourself better” How we can all help to stop antibiotic resistance Most people are aware of the problem of antibiotic resistant bacteria that have emerged in recent years. The appearance of hand wash stations in hospitals and the banning of flowers in the wards are two examples of restrictions that the threat of MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureusis) has brought.

For most of us the threat of resistant bacteria mainly occurs from hospital treatment, since widespread use of antibiotics in hospitals increases the chance of bacteria developing resistance.

Unfortunately the same is true outside the hospital setting and inappropriate use of antibiotics outside hospitals can also add to resistance. So what does it mean for you and what can you do to help prevent resistance developing?

In the extreme case we could find ourselves in a world where antibiotics are either ineffective or of limited use. A simple injury from, for instance, a rose thorn could lead to general infection and

death. Hard to believe but this was often the case before the introduction of penicillin in the 1940's. A world without effective antibiotics would certainly be a much more frightening place, for most of the population antibiotics have always been there. We must ensure their effectiveness continues into the future.

So what can you do? First of all, do not expect your GP to prescribe antibiotics every time you visit. Antibiotics do not work on viral infections such as cold and flu. Amazingly 48% of the population still expect to be given antibiotics when visiting the doctor with symptoms of cold. Secondly if you are given a course of treatment take the drug regularly and finish the course.

Incomplete treatment can increase the risk of bacterial resistance. Thirdly, speak to your pharmacist. They will be able to offer advice and reassure you and direct you to your GP if necessary.

The shoulder joint becomes increasingly stiff, particularly on twisting movements such as trying to put your hand behind your back or head. These movements remain tight even when you try to move the shoulder with your other hand.

3) Recovery phase (which can last from 5 to 26 months) The pain and stiffness starts to resolve during this phase, and you can begin to use your arm in a more normal way. The total duration of the process is from 12 to 42 months, on average lasting 30 months.

Please be aware of your body and take advice from your GP before exercising or send an email to (enquiries@physiological.net) for advice and guidance. These exercises should not be painful, it is ok to feel a stretch when doing them.

HEALTH & WELL-BEING Pets as therapy - friendly paws bring joy to patients!

Patients going through lengthy rehabilitation and elderly patients often feel isolated and lonely; Pets As Therapy (PAT) is a national community based charity that provides therapeutic visits to hospitals, hospices, care homes and special needs schools. We met with Joan Kaye who regularly brings her dog to Queen Alexandra Hospital. Joan has been a Pets As Therapy volunteer for one and a half years now and, together with her little Maltese PAT dog Chouchou, they both come in every Friday.

“Chouchou changes as soon as she gets to the hospital and I put on her PAT jacket. She

knows it is her job to say hi to everyone and we always get a wonderful reaction from all of our regulars up on the F1 phoenix rehabilitation ward. We have extended our visit from just the original rehabilitation and elderly care wards on F level, to the orthopaedic and fracture wards on D level, and even more recently, the respiratory high care wards on E level.”

“Our favourite area is the rehabilitation ward as we get to know the patients and families really well. Chouchou was put on his bed and we put his hand onto her and the patient actually moved his fingers to stroke her. It’s incredible that a dog can

bring out a reaction like that.”

“Chouchou is a French word meaning sweetheart and darling and she really is around the patients. Every area I have taken Chouchou I have been warmly accepted by the hospital and I can’t wait until we can visit more wards when the other PAT dogs have been fully registered.”

PAT animals bring everyday life closer, and with it all the happy associations for them of home comforts.

Queen Alexandra Hospital just has Chouchou registered, however we pleased to say that we are in the process of adding two more PAT dogs to our team. We are

looking to expand upon our PAT and so are looking for more dogs to get involved with this wonderful charity. Any dog can potentially become a PAT dog and will have to make sure they: •Pass the assessment criteria •Are over nine months of age •Have been with their owner for a minimum of six months All PAT dogs wear an ID disc on their collars, as well as their owners who wear an ID badge on their visits.

Cystic FibrosIS is why we’re here. Our small local Portsmouth (and Isle of Wight) Branch is rolling up its sleeves, in readiness for 2014, our 50th Anniversary.

We are part of a national charity which fights for the lives of approx 10,000 young people, through research to find a cure, the fostering of good clinical practice, and support of individual patients. In the last month local supporters have held two Christmas Fairs, and a stall at Hayling Island, raising well over £1700. Around half of the Trust’s income comes from the CF community-

people affected by CF, their families, friends and colleagues - and without this, the Trust would not be able to carry on its groundbreaking work. But because there are so few of us, and CF is not well known and is so demanding in time for the whole family, we really do need help to continue our work for future generations.

A delicious dessert alternative for Christmas & New Year Celebrations

Wine of the Month

One of the first wines I tried when I was much younger was a sweet wine from Monbazillac. I remember trying this golden coloured liquid which to me tasted like what heaven would taste like if it was in liquid form. That wine was the reason why I got into the wine trade.

Some of the best and most expensive sweet wines come from the Sauternes region of Bordeaux and the most sought after wine in the world is Chateau d'Yquem. This can cost in the region of £500 upwards for a 37.5cl bottle. Its neighbour Monbazillac, which is in the Dordogne region, also produces some world class sweet wines albeit slightly cheaper then that of the Sauternes region.

The grapes are left on the vine for longer so that they become infected with Botrytis.

This 'fungus' causes two different types of infections; grey rot which is a result of wet and humid conditions and noble rot which is a result of drier weather following on from the wetter conditions. This is the 'rot' that is needed for sweet wine production as it removes all the water from the grapes leaving more concentrated solids such as

Christmas pudding is not everyone’s favourite dessert so I have created this month’s recipe with that in mind. If you have time and make your own mince meat this recipe would be ideal for it. Otherwise a good quality shop bought mince meat would do nicely.Very often mince tarts accompany the tea and coffees at the end of meal, I am sure this dessert will take its place on your table as a suitable equal to your Christmas Pudding!

Imagine the beautifully short zesty orange pastry which is then topped with a soft and moist mixture of fruits and under tones of almonds. The crisp pastry and well balanced fruit topping will be a delight to your palate.

Ingredients: For pastry: 100 gms butter 200 gms plain flour Pinch of salt 7 or 8 teaspoons orange juice water Zest of 1 orange For filling: 100 gms butter 100 gms caster sugar 3 eggs 75 gms ground almonds 75 gms self raising flour 2 eating apples 2 tbsp flaked almonds 450 gms of mince meat To do: 1. Pre heat fan oven to 170 degrees.

2. Sift flour into food processor, add pinch of salt. Cut butter into small cubes and gently stir into flour. Pulse the mixture in the food processor until it resembles bread crumbs.

Do not over pulse.

3. Add orange zest and 7 to 8 teaspoons of orange juice to the bread crumb mixture and pulse in food processor until it forms a ball. Cover with cling film and chill for 30 minutes.

4. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy using electric mixer. Separate egg yolk from white. Add egg yolk one at a time and self raising flour and beat well.

5. Mix in ground almonds until well mixed in.

6. Beat egg whites until stiff and fold into mixture.

7. Flour table top, rolling pin and hands with plain flour. Place dough ball in centre and roll out gently until pastry fills 24 cms loose bottom pastry tin.

8. Carefully place pastry dough in tin and prick with a fork. Cover with sheet of greaseproof paper and pour baking beans on top. Bake in the middle of the oven for approx. 5 minutes. Remove baking beans and greaseproof paper and bake for a further 5 minutes. Remove from the oven.

9. Peel and dice apples. Spoon mince meat into base of pastry case and mix with diced apple. Pour filling on the top, sprinkle flaked almonds and bake on 160 degree fan for 30 minutes or until brown.

10.Enjoy with whipped cream.

Zesting orange

Add zest to breadcrumbs & add orange pulse until mixture forms a ball

Roll pastry and line tin

Fold in egg white to topping mixture

Line base if tart with mincemeat and layer with diced apple, and finally with topping mixture

Havant Cemeteries Exhibition The Havant Cemeteries Project will be holding a public exhibition about New Lane, Dissenters and Warblington cemeteries at The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre, East Street, Havant from 7th January to mid February 2014.

Volunteers have been busy collecting information about the wildlife, taking photos, writing poems and researching some of the burials. All of this information, along with the history of the cemeteries will be on display during the exhibition.

There will be chance to win a small prize by answering questions relating to information in the exhibition. The lucky winner will be notified once the exhibition has finished. We are delighted that the production is being directed by 3 former members who have gained professional experience in the arts or have continued to perform with local dramatic groups. They are juggling professional and studying commitments in November and December to offer the young members of Dynamo a unique experience.

Ross Cobbold from Hayling left the

group in 2008 to study Musical Theatre at the Arden School of Theatre in Manchester.

He is the overall director of the show and brings us experience of playing in panto and performing at the Edinburgh Fringe. Both Sally Goddard and Alice Searle left the group in 2006. Sally lives locally and has acted in many shows with South Downe Musical Society and CCADs, winning The News 2012 Best Amateur Actress Award for her role as Calamity in Calamity Jane and is directing many of the scenes featuring musical numbers. Alice graduated from the London College of Fashion with a degree in Costume for Performance and is now based

in London. She is working on the design aspects of the show including some unusual (and unexpected) special effects. This promises to be a special show in Dynamo’s long history.

We have planned our tabletop sales for next year, and will be reverting back to holding them on a Saturday afternoon from 2-4pm. Participants will learn how to deal with shock, major bleeds, heart attack and strokes. The trainer is registered with the Health & Safety Executive, and you will receive a certificate of attendance.

Christmas Comedy Whilst you are all wrapping presents and settling down to a roaring fire and some cosy Christmas telly, spare a thought for us entertainers.

Just as the weekend is a rest time for hard working ‘normal’ people and us comedians travel off to comedy clubs to entertain you, Christmas is a time for family and winding down, but it’s the busiest time for comedians!

What adds to the fun is naturally, that Christmas is the time for excess, of food and more dangerously, alcohol! Throw in a party full of friends or work colleagues and the comedy clubs at Christmas can be a really explosive bundle of energy!

Sometimes this can be a great recipe to have fun with the crowd, get the audience laughing more and get them relaxed very quickly. The plus side is you don’t have to warm them up as much: people aren’t as tense and self-aware when they are drunk or ‘lubricated’ with mulled wine. This means that often a crowd gets more involved with your show, is happier to answer your questions, and wants to interact.

become completely unaware of their own noise, their concentration can wonder, and people feel less subtle about letting their opinions be known. If you hesitate or falter for a second, the rowdiest of groups (fuelled by festive excess!) can take you down, and let you know exactly what they think of your last joke, bringing your whole show potentially to an end.

Last Christmas a couple of shows ran away from me, where large groups at the back of big rooms switched off from my efforts, feeling disconnected and too far away to be able to concentrate, and too excited by the cracker party hat and Blue Nun sat on the table (not the wine... it was fancy dress!).

Often groups who go out together have all been sent to the comedy club courtesy of their boss, and they just want to chat and have a social evening, especially when the alcohol arrives!

If the comedian isn’t their thing, where as in September they’d sit and give the comic the benefit of the doubt and 5 minutes to settle in, the Christmas frivolity brings a whole new roller coaster to the party! Strap in!

It’s going to get bumpy!

Prison Me No Way’

Once again we were very privileged to have a day run by the charity ‘Prison Me No Way’ for Year 9. The staff, current and exprison warders, ran a similar day last year and the impact they had on our young people was profound enough for us to ask them to return. The day consisted of different sessions that the pupils rotated around in tutor groups – ‘Fire arms and knife crime’, Domestic abuse, anti-social behaviour shown in a role play by staff

Hayling College staff were once again very impressed by the professional and passionate nature of the PMNW members. They truly wanted to get the message across to our pupils that they must make the right choices, even small ones, now when they are young, to prevent unhappy lives in the future.You will gauge

how successful the day was though from the following comments taken from questionnaires completed by Year 9 after the day. I truly hope that we will be able to run similar day next year.

Firearm and knife crime Learned how you can to go jail for doing silly things even if it isn't a real firearm.

A DAY AT HAVANT FIRE STATION By: Lisa Edwards, Deputy Head Girl, Warblington School

In October some of our prefects went on a trip to Havant Fire Station to develop our leadership skills. We spent the day focusing on how to lead others in small groups working with the Fire Brigade who had all given up their free time to work with us.

The first activity was an obstacle course.

We had to transport a bucket of water without spilling it or touching it, with only rope tied to it to move it. It was a fairly simple task and we completed it, but then they blindfolded us so we had one person that could see leading us around the course.

As a group we had to flip a mat over without any of us touching the floor. We had to work together and think about each other’s strengths and weakness to accomplish the task.

The next activity was a scenario where we had to rescue a body. We were blindfolded because if you went into a smoky house you wouldn’t be able to see. We then

had to follow guide ropes that went throughout the room to find the body and then bring it back.

Our afternoon activities began with paired work. We were put into boy/girl pairs where one was blindfolded and the other had to guide them. They had to get to four cones and somewhere they had to pick up some rope handcuffs. It was hard because there was about fifteen people all talking at once.

Our final task was to climb a ladder up the fire station tower. This was the height of a three storey building. For some people it was very scary because they didn't like heights but everyone gave it a go.

At the end of the day we all received a certificate and I got the award for having the best leadership skills throughout the day.

I would really encourage the school to do this with future prefects because it was good fun and we learnt a lot about team work and leadership skills.

HAVANT CAMERA CLUB 43RD OPEN NATIONAL EXHIBITION On show on at the Meridian Centre last month was our latest annual exhibition open to all photographers in the UK. This is the 43rd National Open Exhibition organised by Havant Camera Club and a great variety of photographs were on display – some very creative; others more traditional. But overall the exhibition showed a good balance of all types of photography.

In the Open Monochrome Print Section, club member Barry Day ARPS CPAGB was successful in winning a Judge’s Award for his print of “The Old Fishing Boat”.

Norrie Phillips DPAGB from Highcliffe & Infinity Camera Club had great success with his creative prints. “Ladies Fun Day” won him the Challenge Trophy in the Colour Prints Section and he also scooped up three other awards in that section.

A separate section of photographs from Havant Camera Club members was also on display. Judith Cook CPAGB won the Projected Images Section with “Quirky Window” and Diana Driver ARPS CPAGB the Prints Section with “Beach Impression”.

Exhibition Secretary, Jean Brooks, said “The Club is delighted to have held another successful exhibition in the Meridian Centre in Havant.

SCOUTING HIGH ADVENTURE A large part of Scouting life involves camping and adventure, and this year has seen the young people of Havant & Hayling Island enjoy both in large quantities.

In August the Explorer Scouts, aged between 14 ½ & 18 years, joined Explorers from across Hampshire on an expedition to Switzerland. The Explorers joined scouts from across the world at the International Scout Centre at Kandersteg in an international jamboree. This involved the young people participating in a programme which revolves around three themes of international friendship, high adventure and eco activities. White water rafting, hikes across glaciers, climbing and exploring ice crevices, visits to chocolate & cheese factories, swimming in alpine lakes, and making new friends at the international disco were just a few of the activities which the Explorers enjoyed.

The Explorers returned tired but having enjoyed a fantastic trip and with a vast collection of new neckerchiefs and badges swapped with new friends from across Europe.

However high adventure was also experienced when camping on Hayling Island as part of the international Jamoboree on the Air / Jamboree over the Internet – an annual event which unites scouts of all ages with fellow scouts from across the world via short wave radios and the internet. But it is a fairly rare occurrence for that event to include a tornado!

Whilst parts of Hayling Island experienced thousands of pounds worth of damage, approximately 50 Scouts, Explorers and Leaders

were camping in Northney, Hayling Island. Jill Saggers, Secretary of the Dreadnought Scout Active Support Unit who organised the camp said: “On Sunday morning we were all woken at 7:30am with thunder and lightning and strong winds.

We jokingly said it might have been a tornado, only to later find out we were right. The weather cleared up thankfully and we were able to continue with activities on Sunday, until it was time to take camp down, when it started raining very heavily again. The joys of camping in England!

Luckily despite the strong winds all of the tents and equipment, including numerous radio aerials and a satellite dish, remained standing and fully functioning, which can only be down to excellent pitching skills by the Scouts.”

During the day a further 50 day visitors including Beavers, Cubs and Guides enjoyed activities including JOTA/JOTI, Aerial runway, Frisbee Golf, Back Woods Cooking, Orienteering, Pioneering and Branding, amongst others.

You don’t always have to travel great distances to enjoy high adventure!

The Jamboree on the Air will take place in October 2014, but hopefully without the added thrill of a tornado!

Scouting is open to girls and boys from 6 years to 18 years old, new members both young and old are always welcome. There are great volunteering opportunities for adults who are interested in becoming involved in working with young people.

NEW RESTAURANT COMING TO LANGSTONE By: Ann Griffiths

After two years in Holland the long established Hayling Cycle Ride returns to France in 2014. The event started in 1986 when Peter McQuade did a solo ride from Paris to Hayling in aid of Cot Death Research, following his friends’ loss of a baby daughter. A new Farmhouse Inns restaurant is being built in Langstone on what is know as Bosmere field. For some years in the recent past Bosmere School used the field for games. They had no further use for the field since development of their site in South Street.

The field backs onto the Langbrook stream, also shown on C19 maps as the Millstream, as it linked the former Havant Town Mill to the north (by Tesco) with Langstone Mill to the south.

The field was the run off for the Town Mill and known as Lower Flash Field. Before

the war it belonged to the well-known Longcroft family and was part of the grounds of their home, Hall Place, South St. In the mid 1800s an 8-bedroomed house, set in 12 acres of meadowland attached and called Langbrook (because of the stream) was built on the south boundary of the field by Rev. G Mountain's widow.(St Faith's). It was demolished when the A27 was built.

In 1965 the new A27 cut the field off from the town centre and the mill site, and IBM was built.

Hayling Billy Open Day On Saturday 2 November the Spring Arts and Heritage Centre in Havant was buzzing with atmosphere, energy and excitement. The Spring organised an Open Day entitled ‘Nostalgia and Steam: 100 years of Hayling Billy History’ to commemorate the 50th year since the Billy Line’s closure, and to celebrate almost 100 years of the ‘Little Train’s’ history.

Every space in the building was occupied with a range of activities; there were railway enthusiasts and many others who had come along to remember trips on the Hayling Billy, but much more was on offer as well, as The Spring’s Josephine Payter explains: “We expanded the activities to incorporate a broader sense of history. For example, we had a 1940s hair booth and a 1950s make-up salon, a wartime tea dance and a Victorian character re-enactor. We also included Victorian children’s crafts, and a real live ticket inspector!”

Staff at The Spring, ably assisted by a great many volunteers, made a tremendous effort to ensure a sense of nostalgia and period atmosphere was present by having

their hair pinned in a 1940s fashion and some even wearing tea-dresses in line with the theme. Even the tea and cakes, provided free at the tea dance by Forest Forge, brought to mind treats from times past.

Josephine Payter added “We were also delighted to celebrate our local community’s personal memories of the Hayling Billy. When I advertised for people to come forward and share their memories of the Billy Line, the response was overwhelming. I received a great variety of contributions, from childhood summer holiday reminiscences to the memories of those who once worked on the Billy Line Terriers. We showed an hour-long film by Alan Wallbank featuring scenes of Langstone Harbour and the Billy Line; and we collated all the memories we received to produce a booklet – copies sold out within a couple of hours!”

Mr Brian Boxall, who contributed to the booklet, said: “I am pleased to have been able to make a small contribution to the event. My input brought back many memories of my happy childhood, made possible by my parents who provided my two sisters and myself with such rich experiences, including trips to Hayling on

the Little Train.”

And Mr Peter Drury, of Hayling Billy 50 who was the on hand expert during the Open Day, described the event as “magical...

I am told the number of visitors on the Open Day alone was approaching one thousand. I spent all day talking to visitors.

People were taking a great interest in all the exhibits...It was a really memorable occasion”.

Children’s activities proved very popular, with many children and their families staying right to the end of the day. Craft tables filled the Gallery area, with children busy making dioramas, model trains and seaside mobiles. The model train competition was announced by the Ticket Inspector with Miss Hedgecock winning.

For older visitors there were talks on the history of the Billy Line and the birds of Langstone Harbour; both were very well attended. The Hampshire Poet, Brian EvansJones, was on hand too, to compose a successful ‘crowd-sourced’ poem. On view outside was a single lever ground frame, on loan from the National Railway Museum, and on the mezzanine floor visitors could inspect a model, made by Mr Alan Bell, of the paddle steam carrier which was used between 1885 and 1888 to transport goods in railway wagons from Langstone to

Bembridge harbour.

The afternoon tea dance was a great success; couples of all ages twirled around the floor under the stage lights, while many others enjoyed simply watching from the theatre seats. The dance was presented by Forest Forge, as part of their Battle Lines project; dancers were encouraged to contribute memories about World War I, and refreshments included Victory Cake made to an authentic recipe.

The Spring’s Director, Sophie Fullerlove, had this to say: “The Spring is here to recognise and celebrate the local heritage of Havant Borough, and on Saturday we did just that!

Nearly 1000 people came along to remember and celebrate the Hayling Billy line. We were delighted to see so many people engaging with their heritage and learning more about the line.

I was particularly pleased to meet a group of former Billy drivers who hadn’t seen each other for 50 years and whom we reunited by our event. It was great to see them remembering together and swapping stories. That is exactly what this kind of event is all about, and I am absolutely ‘chuffed to bits’ that The Spring enabled so many people to engage with an important piece of local history.”

Havant & District Citizens Advice Bureau supports National Consumer Week campaign on Used Cars The most common consumer queries from callers to the Citizens Advice Consumer Service relate to problems with buying used cars. Havant CAB is backing the national CAB campaign to help consumers protect themselves when buying used cars. There are simple steps you can take to protect yourself from dodgy sellers when buying a used car by fully checking the car’s identity and history before you part with your cash: Getting a vehicle history check can help reduce your chances of buying a car that is being sold illegally.You can make several different checks through the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), a private history check and an MOT check.

It doesn’t take long or cost much to confirm the car’s history. Doing some simple checks before you buy could save you a lot of money and distress in the long run.

Checking the car’s identity The DVLA’s online database can tell you a car’s: • year of manufacture • date of first registration • engine capacity • colour • current tax disc expiry date • tax rate (known as vehicle excise duty rate).

If the details on the database don’t match the car or its registration certificate (V5C), the car may have been given another car’s identity. This is known as ringing and is against the law.You should walk away and report the seller to the police.

As well as confirming the identity of the car, these details can give you useful information about how much the car will cost to tax.

Volunteers sought by Hampshire and Havant WEA Spring Events 2014 DAY SCHOOL: MUSIC OF THE TWO AMERICAS Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance charity has put out a fresh appeal for new volunteers. Volunteers play a key role in the charity’s fund raising activities and their contribution towards the fight to save lives across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight is invaluable. Specifically, volunteers are needed to help out at fundraising events, to give talks to groups and organisations and to manage the distribution of collection boxes. The charity is also keen to hear from individuals who have specific skills that can be utilised to help with fundraising.

In a recent survey carried out by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, it was found that the most significant reason for volunteering was the desire to give back to the community (83%), whilst 48% of respondents stated that meeting new people was a strong reason for volunteering, 19% indicated that their personal (direct or indirect) experiences of being rescued by the Air Ambulance was the key reason behind volunteering and 15% stated that they wanted

Now, cricket isn’t my sport, in fact I’m not too sure on the rules, but when you find a cricket club that has as much success as Havant Cricket Club, then you have to be impressed. Founded in 1988, they have turned Havant Park into a fortress for even the toughest of opponents to fear.

With six Southern Premier League cricket titles since the turn of the century, no one could reasonably disagree that they are up

there with the best. As well as their league dominance, in 2011 the same year that they won their latest title, they conquered the opposition in the leagues Twenty20 competition. They followed this up by finishing runners up to Bashley in a Superover a year later in 2012. Having found such a club, I will be sure to continue to follow their progress.

Hayling St Andrews Junior Football Club Since the report in the November edition of PO9 & PO11 on St Andrews Junior Football Club of the Portsmouth Youth League, the Club has gone from strength to strength.

The Saturday morning practices, held at Hayling Park next to the Hayling Community Centre, are enjoyed by the Clubs enthusiastic youngsters working with the qualified coaches and having fun together learning to play their football.

On the field the season has progressed extremely well with the under 10’s teams having just qualified for the Portsmouth Youth League Cup Semi-final.

The Under 10’s will play Jubilee 77 for a place in the final. A date and venue for the

Semi-final has still to be announced but is expected to be played in late January or early February 2014.

The Club is planning a Football Fun Day in the half term holiday on Wednesday 19 February at Hayling Park between 10am3pm. Boys and girls aged 6 to 11 can attend for the whole day or just a half day. There is a charge of £10 pp for the day, or £5 pp for a half-day session (10am-12 noon or 1pm3pm).

Havant Athletics Club has been in its present form since 1978 but there was an athletics club in existence back in 1889.

Today’s club was reformed by parents of junior athletes and they contributed time, money and coaching expertise to develop the club. It is still very much a family orientated club but now competition and training exists for the whole twelve months.

The club caters for athletes and wouldbe athletes from the age of nine through to veterans, some of whom are in their sixth and seventh decades.

Cowplain Community School is the club’s base and training sessions start there at 6pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. More

specialised training and coaching is carried out at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth.

New members, irrespective of age and ability, are always welcome to work with the Grade 4 Standard coaches. The athletes are able to compete in the Youth Development Leagues, Southern and Veteran Leagues together with the Southern Cross country and Today’s Runner Leagues.

Purbrook Cricket Club – Under 9’s Purbrook Cricket Club’s John Howard has told Postcode Publications that the Club would like to hear from parents with children under 9 years of age and interested in playing cricket as the Club needs youngsters to join its U9 squad. The Colts currently train every Wednesday in the sports hall at Oaklands School in Stakes Hill Road, Waterlooville, from 6-7pm.

Langstone Cutters Gig Club Remains Buoyant In December the gig club will celebrate the end of its year as the first Cornish Pilot Gig rowing club in Hampshire.

The club launched on January 1st with a spectacular New Year’s Day boat re-naming ceremony and blessing.

There are over 3500 rowers nationally participating in the sport of gig rowing and racing, the majority being ladies.

The club is fortunate to have the use of two beautiful wooden gigs which are presently leased from Mike Gilbert of Langstone Adventure Rowing. The gigs are named ‘Spirit of Langstone’ and ‘Heart of Hayling’. It is the clubs intention to raise funds in 2014 to purchase these two gigs.

The ultimate challenge for the 18 founder members was entry into the World Cornish Pilot Gig Championships in the Isles of Scilly in May. A return trip is planned for 2014.

In September the club entered London’s Great River Race, a 22 mile marathon row on the Thames from the Isle of Dogs to Richmond in Surrey. A mixed and all ladies crew entered and both gigs completed the course in less than 3 hours.

The club is in search of funding and local sponsorship to help purchase the two gigs, maintain the equipment needed, to compete within this sport and to grow the membership within our community. Ways you can help are displayed on the clubs website.

Commencing in February 2014 the club will be recruiting boys and girls to establish junior Under 16 gig rowing crews to train together and compete in next year’s Junior World Gig Rowing Championships.

The gig club is fortunate to have four British Rowing approved and qualified rowing coaches. Training programmes are provided for men’s, women’s and junior rowing and team development.

Based at Northney Marina the club has access to the Chichester and Langstone harbours at most states of the tide enabling a regular training timetable. The club operates from Unit 3 at the Marina and uses rowing machines for fitness training.

Postcode Publications Specsavers Sponsor Open Junior Badminton Tournament There was buzz around the Horizon Leisure Centre as the Havant Hornets junior badminton club hosted their second annual open tournament in June. The Hornets are unique as a junior club, because they use feather rather than plastic shuttles. The club feels the feathers give the players the best start in the sport.

They and used top quality feather shuttles in the tournament.

Club coach & principal event organiser Maggie Phillips told Postcode Publications “The tournament attracted 98 players of all ages came from as far afield as the Isle of Wight and Berkshire”.

This large entry of players ranging from 7 to 16 years old guaranteed top quality competition and drama. Amongst all of the excitement normally associated with large badminton events, representatives from Badminton England came along and commented: “This is the most well organised tournament we have seen” Using 6 courts and chairs for 100 spectators, the hall was alive with the players and their accompanying families.

A fabulous day was enjoyed by everyone. On court there was some fierce competition at all levels in the tournament including players currently training in the County Development & County squads.

“The problem is funding such a competition” said Club coaching John Broomhead. “The main costs are the courts and feather shuttles”. He found two

Better coaching for better results A coach education programme Havant Borough Council in partnership with South Downs College students has just launched a coach education programme consisting of parttime workshops and training sessions in a wide range of areas. All are on topics vital to the success of any sports club and will appeal to coaches and club officials who want to learn more about a range of aspects on running a sports club.

Anyone interested can now sign up for the Sports Coach Education programme. The first course was held on Thursday evening 28 November at South Downs College in College Road, Purbrook, dealing with Emergency Aid for Sports. That course will be repeated on 7 May. Four further part-time courses start at College between January and May 2014, covering topics such as understanding club finances; developing a business plan, developing a marketing strategy; and safeguarding and protecting children.

With HWFC and the FA Cup a part of recent folklore it was a big disappointment to all at the club when the team failed to reach the first round proper of this seasons’ competition. Fortunately the team has performed superbly in the FA Trophy (the non-league version of the FA Cup).

In the last round the Hawks faced a difficult trip to Sutton United who had embarrassed them only weeks before by 5-0 at Westleigh Park. The re-match was very hard fought but Hawks came away with a 21 victory and banked £4K in prize money.

The reward was another away trip in the next round to local rivals Basingstoke Town on 30th November where they drew 0-0.

In the replay Hawks sealed victory by 1-0 with a goal after 11 minutes from Sahr Kabba, which put them in the final 32 teams in the country and starting to dream of a trip to Wembley. In Round 2 Hawks visit the Brighton team Whitehawk.

They knocked the Hawks out of the competition last season. The Hawks have never won this Cup and have often fielded squad players for the competition, but Manager Lee Bradbury likes to win everything and sees this as a chance to win silverware this year.

The squad this season is looking better with each match and after just over a year in charge at the club Mr Bradbury is starting to see the side playing his way.

There is a very international feel about the ‘new Hawks’ with players from Guyana, Italy, Sierra Leone, Scotland, Poland, France and the Cape Verde Islands as well England. The common language is football but the presence of all these multi-national players is opening the profile of our club to a much wider audience. I hope to be reporting on further cup exploits in the next article and look forward to meeting many PO9 readers at our matches over the festive season.

Horndean Volleyball Club Horndean Volleyball Club is a new club, founded in January 2011 and currently has just one adult mens’ team. It is a vibrant Club run on a voluntarily basis to provide opportunities for adults and children in the Horndean, Havant and Portsmouth areas to sample, play and compete in volleyball.

The Club is affiliated to Volleyball England – the national governing body. The club successfully gained entry to the National Volleyball League Division 3 South in the 2011/12 season – which it won convincingly to secure promotion to Division 2 South. In its first season in the higher Division, the Club finished fourth after learning very quickly from a shaky start. The Club’s strong finish to the 2012/13 season was underlined by reaching Volleyball’s National Shield Final at Kettering; losing to London’s top team in the competition the star-studded Flaming Aces. In the current 2013/14 season the team has started solidly winning four games and losing three. They are the only team to beat the runaway leaders of the Division, Wessex BU from Bournemouth.

The Clubs National Volleyball League 2 fixtures are played at Highbury College.

Matches are on Saturdays serving-off at 14.30 after the warm-up that begins at 14.00. The next home matches are on 4 and 18 January 2014.

The Club works closely with ‘Pompey in the Community’ to support the delivery of the Premier League 4 Sport programme in the Havant Borough.

The team trains every Thursday at South Downs College, in College Road Purbrook, from 7pm – 9pm.

The new Havant Women's Business Group Networking and meeting other local people is important for all businesses.

However, traditional networking groups can be somewhat intimidating. People always already seem to know each other and joining in takes some confidence. To redress this balance, local business women, Samantha Lee and Nicola Whitley have set up a NEW networking group for women in the local business community.

If I said the word ‘Library’ to you, one of the first things you would hopefully think of is a collection of exciting ‘books’. If you didn’t then you might need to take note of the 1,000 new arrivals to The Hayling College’s library and how great it all looks.

Many of the books have been chosen by pupils at the school as well as our new Year 7 pupils; they really are the kind of books we want to read.

Over the summer our stock of books has gone sky-high (no seriously the piles of new books are so high you could probably see them through the roof...). The Librarians have been extremely busy getting the library ready to house all of these new books. After close inspection of each book and a long, rigorous, and not at all entertaining, flick through each book I’ve come to the conclusion that there are way too many books and much too little time!

The librarians at the Hayling College couldn’t be more thrilled. One librarian said, “we’ve all been looking forward to the arrival of these new books for a while now.

There’s a lot to choose from including some celebrity autobiographies, which will attract a wider variety of pupils”. We really do have books for all ages to love and enjoy.

As a student librarian at the Hayling College for 4 years now, I can personally say for a fact that I had been waiting with great anticipation for these new books to arrive. I really couldn’t wait to get my hands on them. I’ve already got a stack of over 14 books sitting on my bedside table, glaring at me, teasing me, daring me to read them.

Now I have to add at least another ten to the pile that I just have to read. To sum up, the library is full to the brim of thrilling new books and we are all really pleased about it.

“How to make” with Quick and Easy Bunting!

You can make this bunting in any choice of fabric to suit any occasion.

You will need: Thread Scissors or Pinking Shears Sewing Machine Bunting Tape – (1/2 metre longer than finished bunting) Fabric – 1 metre in total to make 7 metres of bunting using the template Template - downloadable Bunting Instructions: Download the template from www.joytocreate.com scroll to the bottom of the website page and visit the latest blog.

Tip: If you cut out the template and draw around it onto card it will be easier to draw your cutting lines on your fabric.

1. Press the fabric flat with an iron using the cotton setting.

2. Place the template on the wrong side of the fabric and draw around it.

3. If you follow the layout below you should get 10 triangles from each piece of fabric (fat quarter) and reduce the amount of cutting needed.

The Huggers, Hayling's own ukulele group, raised £245 for Children in Need when they played at the Hayling Cooperative in November.

Customers came and sang along with us and we even had people dancing in the aisles.

Cut out with scissors or pinking shears if you have them to prevent the fabric from fraying.

5. Leaving at least 12 inches at each end, lay the short edge of the triangle onto the bunting tape and alternate the colours to your liking.

6. Pin in place.

7. Using a straight stitch on your machine attach the triangles to the tape removing the pins as you go along.

8. If you want to neaten the top edge, fold the bunting tape in half lengthways turning over the top edge of the bunting and stitch again with a straight stitch.

Options: You can make double sided bunting by stitching two triangles right sides together down the 2 long edges, taking a ¼” seam and turn right side out and press. Attach to the bunting tape in the same way.

Marines Charity plus many more.

Councillor Yvonne Weeks, responsible for Economy and Community said;” This was a very important occasion. The benefit of signing the Community Covenant will unlock opportunities to apply for

community funding to support our armed forces families and communities both now and in the future.

The Rotary Club Young Chef Competition Seven pupils from Hayling College, Park Community and Warblington School took part in the Rotary Young Chef of the Year competition.

Organisers were stunned by their expertise and they also wowed judge James Parsons, the head chef of the Langstone Hotel and former chef to the royal household.

The competition, held at Warblington School in Southleigh Road, Havant, saw youngsters aged 12 to 16 battle it out in the kitchen.

Rotarian Elizabeth Walters organised the event. She said: ‘It was fantastic.

We were so impressed with all the entrants. They were incredibly talented considering they were so young.

‘The runner-up in the competition was 13-year-old Mollie Geden from Hayling College.

She put together a sumptuous meal of chicken chasseur followed by chocolate mousse. Both will now go on to the district round of the Young Chef of the Year competition in Bournemouth next March. She

also won Afternoon Tea at the Langstone Hotel.

Students who also participated from The Hayling College were Adam Betteridge and Molli Mae Hellard, who also received small prizes. They had already won the school heat against in which 40 Year 9 Catering students had competed.

The competition takes place each year and is divided into rounds based on which district the schools fall into. It was set up to encourage cooking amongst young people and it is hoped the event will be well supported by schools across the country.

Postcode Publications I never thought I’d walk again after my stroke Irene had a stroke in early August and is currently rehabilitating in Queen Alexandra Hospital.

“Having a stroke is the weirdest feeling and so hard to put into words.You need to focus on the end result and being able to go home.”

Stroke attacks 15 million people worldwide every year and claims a life every six seconds, but it can be beaten. The Queen Alexandra Hospital stroke team see an average of three-four patients every day presenting with stroke symptoms, with a maximum of 11 patients in one day.

Irene continues: “I never thought I’d walk again.You feel proud of even simple things – when I first curled and uncurled my hand again it made me feel like I was getting there.”

Jane Williams, Chief of Service for Medicine for Older People, Rehabilitation and Stroke highlights the importance of recognising stroke symptoms through the government campaign FAST: •Face – has your face dropped on one side?

•Arms – can you move both arms?

•Speech – is your speech slurred?

•Time to call 999

“I cannot stress how important it is to call 999 if you suspect that you are having a stroke. Time = brain cells,” says Jane.

“On average, patients who have a stroke will be in our care for around a total of four months. The average stay in our acute stroke unit is 5-7 days where the patients undergo medical assessments and management before being moved to the inpatient ward for a further 3-4 weeks to undergo stroke rehabilitation. QA has a specialist community stroke rehabilitation team who will work with you at home and this can continue for a further 2-3 months.”

“A stroke can happen to anyone at any age. 25% of QA stroke patients are of a working age so it is really important for us to help them to get back to work as soon as possible.

Over the last 20 years the service has changed so much and now the ongoing rehabilitation means that stroke patients can achieve a better quality of life. 20 years ago the medical service used to look at stroke in thirds: one third will die within a month, one third will live with no complications, one third will have some form of disability.

Loan Scams

Advance fee scams - operate when an invitation to apply for a loan is sent out by post or email. The accompanying material may make claims of fast tracking and approval regardless of the applicant’s credit history. However, before the application can be processed, the victim will be asked to pay an upfront fee to cover insurance or other charges. Once the money is paid, the victim does not hear from the company again and the loan is never received.

Repayment scam - a scammer will often use a company name that is similar to an existing loan company. They will send out letters claiming the recipient has missed a

repayment deadline, and now owe their original debt plus a penalty charge. The victim is asked to make the payment to the fraudsters, in order to bring the amount owed up to date. Once paid, the victim will discover they still owe the full amount to their outstanding loan company. If you receive a letter alleging money is owed, look at your original paperwork and contact the company you took the loan from to check your repayment dates.

Big Tree Plant for Make a Difference Day

The team of employees from Lockheed Martin at the tree planting Our Make a Difference Day campaign was celebrated this year over two days in October, bringing together business and volunteering to help the community. The national event ‘Make a Difference Day’ promotes volunteering and provides people across the country with the opportunity to try out volunteering.

The event was organised by Community First HEH in partnership with Groundwork South and local Havant Borough Tree Wardens Frances and Richard Jannaway and involved the planting of over 200 trees along the Hermitage Stream area of Leigh Park. Kevin Dewitt from Groundwork who is working on the ‘Go With The Flow’ project, funded by Heritage Lottery said “the day is about business and local volunteers coming together to help the environment and supporting the local community”.

The first tree plant was a fantastic opportunity for The V-team, a group of volunteers which successfully received money from The News Cash for Communities, to volunteer in the community, making a real difference to the environment as well as helping to improve the lives of its members. Janet Duggan, the Co-ordinator, said “it was extra special as we are not only celebrating the national event which promotes community involvement across the country; it is the first anniversary of the V Team. Members of

The V Team will learn new skills and make new friends, which in turn will increase confidence and hopefully return to the workplace”.

The second tree plant was supported by a team of employees from Lockheed Martin UK. They braved the elements, giving up their weekend to help. “Across the country, Lockheed Martin UK employees volunteer in a variety of social, environmental and practical projects on behalf of the company” said Mark Ralphson, Lockheed Martin UK Engineering Director. “Our team of 11 Havant-based employees were delighted to be able to plant over 160 trees and make a tremendous difference to parkland, right on our doorstep. We look forward to watching them grow and providing a new habitat for wildlife for many years to come.”

WARBLINGTON SCHOOL Realising potential: unlocking success WARBLINGTON SCHOOL’S RIGHTS RESPECTING JOURNEY By: Mrs Fletcher - Assistant Headteacher

WoW Day – 26 September 2013 By: Mr Barnard, Head of Years 7 and 8

Warblington School welcomed over 170 Year 6 pupils from four of the feeder schools for a day of discovering what life at Warblington School was like. The theme for the day was based around characters created by Roald Dahl.

After arriving at 9.15 am the pupils were given a series of welcoming speeches by several members of staff, including the Headteacher Mrs Vincent, Assistant Headteacher Mrs Meyer and the Head of Year 7 and 8 Mr Barnard. Several Year 8 students spoke about how they had found the transition from junior school to secondary school. They covered many of the usual concerns that New Year 7 students have, from the increased size of the school and getting lost, dealing with older students, the school support networks and the variety of lessons taught.

After these introductions pupils were then split up into six multi-school groups and began their Roald Dahl adventure.

The six activities included Food Technology, Musical Mayhem and Art and

Design, all based around Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Science based on George’s Marvellous Medicine, Maths based on James and the Giant Peach and English based on Matilda. The pupils also had a session of PE, where they were supported by older PE students studying PE at GCSE level.

Around the school there was a lovely working atmosphere in all the classrooms where the Year 6 were engaged in activities and they mixed readily with pupils from other feeder schools.

At 2.30 pm they all returned to the Hall for a quick round-up of the day and to collect the cakes they had made earlier in the day. Many of them seemed far more confident and had been reassured that the transition to Warblington next September would be much easier than they had thought. The other real positive from the day was the way the current Warblington students helped and supported their guests for the day; the opportunities to show increased maturity and responsibility was grasped by all those who took part.

September 2013 saw Warblington School embark on its journey to join UNICEF UK’s Rights Respecting School initiative. This will see the school use the United Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) to help them develop their policies and practices and establish a clear set of values that are actively upheld by its community. Children have a particular set of rights due to their vulnerability and need for protection. The UNCRC sets out the rights that must be realised for children to develop to their full potential, free from hunger and want, neglect and abuse.

There are forty-two articles in the Convention, but the key ones are that every child has the right to a childhood, the right to an education, the right to be healthy and the right to be treated fairly.

The school has focused on Article 29 since September, helping all students to be aware that education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full.

It must encourage the child’s respect for human rights, as well as respect for their parents, their own and other cultures, and the environment.

Warblington now has a Steering Group established with two representatives from

each year group. The Steering Group is in the process of completing our Student Audit and then their School Action Plan. They have already held their first Rights Respecting Enrichment Day in October where every student focused on the rights of the child and how we need to both understand and apply the Articles into our school life.

The school is aiming to reach Level 1 of this Award by the end of the year.

HAYLING BOWLS CLUB One for his Nob! During the autumn and winter months Hayling's bowlers get together for fortnightly walks (weather permitting) and cards. The preferred card game is cribbage where the cry "One for his Nob" will often be heard, as well as "Two for his Heels". Sessions are held on alternate Wednesday mornings in the URC small hall between October and March and attendance is usually around 15 players, although more can be accommodated. A

highlight of the morning is the mid-session break for tea/coffee, a biscuit and, occasionally, a delicious cake!

Cribbage is game that dates back to the early 17th century and combines skill with a little luck to reach a score of 121 points by combining cards to total 15 (picture cards counting as 10), two, three or four of a kind, runs and flushes. Scores are kept on a cribbage board which can be a challenge in itself to keep the pegs travelling in the right direction! Whilst not doing anything for our bowling skills it does help to keep us in touch with friends and our minds active.

Southbourne Charity calls for the gift of giving a future this Christmas

Happy girls at the orphanage

A charity which began at St John’s Church in Southbourne is launching a Christmas appeal to mark the 9th birthday of the tsunami on 26th December. It has given the charity a great chance to reminisce and look back at how they have made significant changes to the lives they have helped to protect.

BEATS charity, which stands for British

Earthquake And Tsunami Support, was set up following the devastating tsunami in South East Asia on Boxing Day 2004. The tsunami devastated parts of the Indonesian coast, Sri Lanka, Thailand and even parts of India and Africa.

The charity began with members of St John’s congregation in Southbourne, some 10,000 miles away, who decided to pull together and do something to help.

They went about supporting the victims in Aceh, the worst hit area, by supporting children and their families. BEATS have also partnered with other organisations to set up and maintain educational facilities to children at two orphanages in Medan, Indonesia, called Y.A.S.A.H. and Y.A.C.A.N.,

which are home to around 130 children.

Some of these children and their families were victims to the 2004 tsunami, while many were affected by an earthquake in 2005 which hit the small island of Nias and 2009 which hit Padang.

Despite the persistent trials and tribulations on these young people’s lives, they now face a bright future thanks to BEATS charity, as many are attending University this year.

One orphanage based in the village of Medan, looks after around 23 children.

There is also a larger orphanage which looks after over 100 children, and both are Christian-run organisations which are supported by BEATS Charity.

All of these children need teaching and the larger orphanage incorporates a registered school and local qualified teachers; the children who live in the smaller orphanage attend local schools.

Both the children and teachers alike require sponsorship and today, many people from across the PO9, PO10 and PO11 region are doing just that. All funds raised by sponsors go directly via BEATS

Charity to the cause, enabling the children to secure a future and a better life following on from the devastation to which they have been subjected.

TALKING NEWSPAPER CELEBRATES ITS 500TH EDITION On 10th December, Havant Borough Talking Newspaper (HBTN) recorded its 500th edition. It was a major milestone for the many volunteers who have worked over the past twenty years to keep HBTN’s blind and visually impaired listeners up-to date with local news. Stories from the PO Postcode Publications are also broadcast for listeners’ enjoyment.

In 1993, the first edition of the Talking Newspaper opened with a message from the actor, Andrew Sachs. Taking time off from his side-splitting performance as the Dame, he talked a little about his involvement in audio books and wished everyone at HBTN great success in their new venture. Its first edition was recorded in the music studio at Horndean School 30 Market Parade, PO9 1QF to where only the schoolHavant staff was allowed 023 9247 0856 / 9247 1857 use the recording equipment. However, as

the space was shared with a number of other organisations, setting up and dismantling the studio on recording evenings took almost as long as the recording itself. A move to a charity building in Leigh Park provided a more suitable studio layout but, unfortunately, the studio proved to be an interesting target for vandalism so HBTN moved yet again.

Despite some near misses, HBTN has always managed to produce its fortnightly edition, apart from on one memorable occasion when appallingly bad weather made it impossible for volunteers to reach the studio.

They’re unable to read newspapers so Havant Talking News helps keep them in touch and they really enjoy listening to the friendly, familiar voices of our readers.”

The Talking Newspaper is provided on

memory sticks as well as on cassette tapes. These can be played on RNIB Daisy players or computers but if neither is available then memory stick players, specially designed for visually impaired people, are available.
