The Armada Set Sail World Record Breakers

It was a sunny start to the day when Sir Richard Branson, not one to stay on the side lines, decided it was time to set another world record. He was in the water at the Virgin Kitesurfing Armada, a more than suitable event name considering he joined 317 other kitesurfers as they attempted, successfully to break the world record for the ‘Largest Parade of kitesurfers’ ever assembled. He himself is the oldest person to have crossed the channel by kitesurf, so he’s no stranger to the sport. Such impressive improvements over the last two years have been the result of a collective responsibility to drive up standards and to ensure high quality teaching for all students. In just two years the students, staff and parents at Havant Academy have tirelessly worked together and their commitment has paid off. There has been significant progress made across all subjects.

The class of 2013, their teachers and parents have come together this year to achieve results that we are all proud of. A number of students have made exceptional progress and deserve extra recognition for this: Mollie Bartlett: 2A*s, 7 Bs, 2Cs Shannon Beale: 2 A*s, 5 Bs, 3 Cs Kyle Clinton: 4A*s, 1A, 6Bs, 1C – alongside playing for Southampton FC, Kyle has now secured a contract with the club.

The Armada Set Sail

Participants were required to complete a one-mile course in order to break the record and in the spirit of things, they then continued on to Lancing on a fundraising downwinder which is the easiest way to travel long distances while kitesurfing, in aid of three fantastic charities; Since SnowCamp launched the event in April with Virgin’s backing, over 300 kitesurfers clamoured to sign up to the event, so it was always set to be a success whatever the outcome. It’s been phenomenal to see the response of the kite surfing community coming together to support this first kite surfing Amada event.

Sir Richard said, “I’m passionate about kite surfing and I think this was a fantastic and fun event in support of some great causes, certainly the first of its kind and incredibly positive for the sport. We are delighted to be involved and we are so happy to have set a new Guinness World Record by bringing kite surfers together from across the UK to raise money for three fantastic charities – Virgin Unite, Snow-Camp and the RNLI”.

Snow-Camp launched the event, formerly the Big Charity Downwinder in April this year with UK Pro kitesurfer Lewis Crathern. Also in attendance were Steph Bridge, four times World Champion kiteboarder and currently ranked as number one woman in the world as well as Sam Light, 1st overall BKSA Pro fleet.

In August,Virgin was announced as the Title Sponsor for the event, stating that they were proud to put their global brand behind such a promising and positive cause and sport. The event was supported by Snow-Camp,Virgin Unite and the RNLI. The event was given a big green light weather-

wise for Sunday by Dan Charlish, director at Snow-Camp and kitesurfers assembled for registration bright and early at 7am, before departing at 9am to give them the optimum weather conditions to kitesurf.

The participants paid £20 to enter the event, and each will have raised a minimum of £100 towards the cause, so everything hadn’t quite gone to plan, but each cause will receive all the proceeds.

Of course no event should be held without an after party, and this was no different for the Virgin Armada! The party was held at the New Sussex Hotel in Lancing, where the fun kicked off with an awards ceremony, prizes and announcements about setting the World Record, before participants spent the time enjoying a well-deserved celebration after what was a truly fantastic day!

The Virgin Kitesurfing Armada was the successful attempt to break the world record for Largest Parade of Kitesurfers ever assembled, and participants had to complete a one-mile course to ensure they broke the record. After the course was completed, some kitesurfers continued on a 46 mile fundraising downwinder to Lancing, stopping at Pagham and Littlehampton along the way, participants didn’t need to complete the full 46 miles if they didn’t want to or couldn’t, but everyone managed to complete the first mile, safely securing the Armada’s World Record.

Changes to child maintenance

Owner, Mr Choudhury and his staff await your arrival Red Chilli opened their doors in North Street, Havant recently; their restaurant offers a sumptuous and stylish interior seating 80 with air conditioning and subtle mood lighting to augment the ambience. We arrived at Red Chilli one cold Thursday evening and were warmly greeted

by Naz Choudhury and his staff. We started with pickles onions and poppadums - look out for the chef's own made tamarind sauce - really tasty! Red Chilli has 14 starters on their comprehensive menu as well. Try Chom Chom Chat Chicken - spicy diced chicken with tamarind sauce chat mossala coriander tomato and chick peas!

My partner choose "Fish Shorisha" from the "Red Chilli Signature Dishes" section.

Chunky fish portions shallow fried with spices and cooked in a mustard base sauce really tasty and a different style of curry. My favourite is always Chicken Korai but I decided to follow my partner and chose another signature dish - "Manchurian chicken" a sweet and sour dish with spices,

masala and lime juice, tamarind and spring onion - certainly in my top five for flavour.

My guests ordered “Red Chilli special sizzling" dish with diced chicken or lamb, fresh garlic, ginger, green chilli, coriander, peppers and onion - a dry dish but was told "very enjoyable." Her partner ordered his favourite "Tandoori King Prawn Masala" which was spiced up for him by the obliging chef.

An excellent range of wines and beers are always available and "Mr Choudhury says that he is always pleased to cook any special dietary dish. “Our aim is to give a top quality service and food. “He also mentioned that they will soon be introducing special themed evenings.

Coffees all round finished off a very enjoyable evening.

From 29 July 2013 the way in which Child Support is calculated and administered has changed.

What has changed?

The new Child Support regime will be based upon the gross income of the nonresident parent and will apply to families with two or three qualifying children if: • those children have the same parents; and • there is no existing case involving both of these parents.

The 'gross income regime' already applies to families with four or more or more children if they meet the above conditions.

The 'gross income regime' will be administered by the Child Maintenance

Service (CMS), rather than the Child support Agency (CSA). The CSA will continue to deal with all other new applications, which will primarily be by those parents with one child, under the old scheme for the time being, although it is anticipated that these families will be bought within the 'gross income regime' in the future.

Q&A with Swain & Co Solicitors I have not made a claim for Child Support previously, but want to now. I have three children, all share the same father. How will the new rules affect me?

Any claim that you make now will be administered by the Child Maintenance Service (CMS) rather than the Child Support Agency. This is because this is a new claim and your children share the same parents.

In order to calculate the amount of child maintenance payable to you by the nonresident parent we must first calculate his gross income. This is all of the income that he receives through employment, selfemployment and pensions. It is likely that the CMS will obtain this information from the HMRC. The amount that you receive will depend

upon the level of gross income earned by the non-resident parent. If gross income is up to and including £800 per week you will receive 19% of this as you have three children. If gross income is between £800 and £3000 per week then you would receive 15% of this as you have three children. This is however only a preliminary figure.

Deductions can be made to the amount payable to you if there are other children living in the non-resident parent's household. Deductions can also be made should your children spend at least 52 nights each year in the non-resident parent's care.

Plus there may be charges applicable for using the CMS in the future.

Havant Academy News World Challenge Trip to Morocco – July 2013 On the 11th July 2013 a group of Year 10 and 11 students met at Havant Academy to start their eight day challenge of trekking in the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco.

Although there was an expedition leader supplied by World Challenge and two members of staff on the expedition with us, they took a major step back in order for us students to face the test of developing and using leadership and communication skills that we may require in the future.

As you can imagine, this was out of all of our comfort zones; we were faced with a lot of challenges. None of us had done anything like this before, so we had the chance to really find ourselves. During the expedition we learnt how to overcome new

problems, such as organising the group’s finance and leading the group throughout the day.

We grew as individuals and as a group and discovered more about ourselves. We were able to see how we dealt with different situations and what our strengths and weaknesses were. We learnt about different cultures and saw how people in another country and culture live their lives.

On one day we trekked for 12 hours and climbed to a height of 3400m (over 2½ times the height of Ben Nevis)! We all really enjoyed the expedition and it has opened our eyes to the opportunities of being able to have more adventures in other countries around the world!

How safe is your data?

Many people ask why we need to back up our data? What is data?

Well anything on your computer is classed as ‘data’. The main rule – “have it duplicated in at least one other place”.

This is either another PC, external hard drive or cloud backup. External hard drives are good for the speed of transfer, however if they are stored in the same place as the PC and you have a flood or fire, you will still lose everything. An external backup hard drive is very cost effective solution.

Cloud backup (when you backup online) is very easy to use, however if you need

the backup quickly, you need to ensure a fast broadband connection, or it can take days depending on volume of data.

Cloud backup can be expensive, generally it is charged on a monthly basis per gigabyte.

There are lots of types of backups, but these are usually relevant if you have a business server, due to multiple people accessing etc. (if you have questions on this, please email me giles@syn-star.co.uk) So remember, backing up using your existing PC will only protect you from corruption, always have a copy in a different location to your PC, even if you keep the hard drive in your car!!

HEALTH & WELL-BEING Queen Alexandra Hospital ranked first nationally for numbers of patients where key quality standards for hip fracture care are achieved The trust is pleased to announce that it continues to perform better than the national average in the achievement of quality indicators for hip fracture care from the National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) Report 2013.

For patients with hip fractures, care needs to be quickly and carefully organised to get them in a state ready for surgery. By quickly stabilising patients and ensuring that expert clinical teams respond to their frail conditions and complex needs, the most positive outcomes can be achieved. For many patients, best practice care from the moment they arrive at hospital can make the difference between independence or lack of independence, and even life or death.

Equally, the care that patient receives following surgery is just as important, as are the initial days following surgery. This is often where the greatest gains can be made in patient outcomes. The trust treated 736 patients with hip fractures in 2012/13 and in terms of numbers is ranked first against achieving the components of best practice.

“The trust’s catchment population is already much older than the England average. Our age profile today is at the level that is predicted to the reach across the rest of England in 2032. Hip fractures are usually the result of a fall and are almost always treated with surgery.”

Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust was one of 186 hospitals taking part in the NHFD which provides feedback enabling clinicians to monitor and improve the care they provide.

Analysis of mortality data for the year from 1st March 2012 has shown Queen Alexandra Hospital to have a better than expected casemix adjusted 30 day mortality.

It’s 3 years since the mobile screening van was last in this area and women aged between 47 and 73 are being encouraged to take up the offer.

Attending for breast screening is an

important part of being breast aware for women in this age group. There is great concern locally that women who’ve been called for screening for the first time are not attending which may leave them at a higher risk of not detecting breast cancer early. If cancer is detected in the early stages there is a much better chance of successful treatment.

Influenza Myth Busting

Most people have some knowledge of the symptoms and effects of the influenza virus and are aware that it can be prevented by vaccination. However, there are still many myths surviving about the impact and treatment of the disease. The following may clarify some of the more common misconceptions.

I've never had flu so won't get it now. I must be immune.

Every year the influenza virus changes it's form so just because you've never had it doesn't mean that you can't be affected this season. Any acquired immunity is short lived.

I was vaccinated last year so I'm protected No! For the reason described above, the vaccine has to be formulated each year according to the new strains.

I won't have the vaccine because it gives you the flu Impossible! The virus in the vaccine is dead and simply boosts immunity.You may experience slight fever and some pain at the injection site.

If I get the flu I'll take antibiotics No! Antibiotics do not work against viruses.

Having flu is just like a cold, I'll be OK Whoever says this has never had flu! You

are likely to spend at least 2-3 days in bed with a temperature of 40C (104F) and serious aches and pains. Every year I vaccinate people who say they had flu last year and never want it again.

I take vitamin C to prevent the flu There is no evidence to support this claim.

I can't have the vaccine, I'm pregnant Yes you can and you should. It will protect you and your baby during pregnancy and in the early months of life.

Why bother with vaccination, flu won't kill me It probably won't if you are fit and healthy but you will have an unpleasant time for several days. The elderly and those with chronic illnesses such as asthma or diabetes may suffer serious complications requiring hospitalisation.

Publications’ Readers… tips and exercises from our Olympic Physio Natalie March, Chartered Physiotherapist: It has been an exciting time here at Physio-logical, we have just celebrated our three year anniversary of our clinic based within Active4less, New Lane, Havant. Also, Sara Barker our new physiotherapist and acupuncturist started with us in July 2013, so we are now offering more evening and daytime appointments.

This edition I thought we’d focus on your shoulders. I have noticed lots of people playing tennis, golf, swimming, playing throw and catch with their children/grandchildren in the park, doing heavy gardening tasks and DIY all of which can lead to a problem with your shoulder called “Rotator Cuff Impingement Syndrome”. Here are some exercises to help to stretch and strengthen the correct muscles to help with this problem. It is a very complex syndrome so it is better to be assessed by a chartered physiotherapist who can prescribe an individual exercise programme and treatment plan.

Impingement syndrome is more likely to occur in people who engage in physical activities that require repeated overhead arm movements. Common symptoms include: • An arc of shoulder pain approximately when your arm is at shoulder height and/or when your arm is overhead.

• Shoulder pain that can run from the top of the shoulder to the elbow.

• Pain when lying on the sore shoulder.

• Muscle weakness or pain when attempting to reach or lift.

• Pain reaching for the seat-belt.

• Stand at end of wall or in doorway • Place inside of bent arm on surface of wall and position the bent elbow at shoulder height • Walk forwards and turn body away from positioned arm.

• Hold for thirty seconds repeat twice, three times a day.

Squat + Shoulder Elevation with Yellow Theraband This is an exercise to start to strengthen the rotator cuff this should only be done once you have full shoulder movement and should be undertaken pain free.

Tie the yellow theraband in a loop: • Push out with your hands with a static and constant pressure against the theraband • As you squat down (keeping knees in line with the second toe) you push out against the theraband and take your arms up above your head.

• Repeat three times fifteen, two times a day.

• Remember this exercise should be pain free.

HEALTH & WELL-BEING Queen Alexandra Hospital carried out 78 kidney transplants in 2012/13 At Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, 78 patients received a life-saving or enhancing transplant during 2012/13, according to figures published in NHS Blood and Transplant’s Organ Donation and Transplantation Activity Report 2012/13.

The total number of kidney transplants increased by 7% in 2012-2013 in the UK, translating to a total of 2998 kidney transplants. The Queen Alexandra Hospital accounted for 2.6 % of all kidney transplant operations carried out across the UK. The Portsmouth and Wessex renal transplant centre performed 27 living kidney transplants. Across the UK during 2012/13 there were 1,101 living donors, a 4% increase on the previous year.

At the end of March 2013, 235 of Queen Alexandra Hospital patients were on the waiting list for a kidney transplant.

Without organ donation there cannot be transplantation, and every day across the UK around 3 people die in need of an organ transplant.

51 people donated their organs upon their death in the Portsmouth region. There were 1,212 deceased organ donors across the UK. Sam Dutta, consultant transplant surgeon at Queen Alexandra Hospital said: “We’re delighted by the number of lives we have saved through a kidney transplant at our hospital last year.

“Centres such as ours are only able to

perform live-saving transplant operations if people are willing to be donors and we are extremely grateful to the 51 deceased donors from Portsmouth who helped save the lives of people across the UK in the last year. Their families should be very proud that they agreed to donation going ahead.

Sally Johnson, Director of Organ Donation and Transplantation at NHS Blood and Transplant said: “Queen Alexandra Hospital has continued to make a vital contribution to saving lives through transplantation.”

“If you have not thought about organ donation, we urge you to support it and sign up to be a donor. Join the NHS Organ Donor Register and tell your loved ones

your decision. It’s really important your family knows that you have given your consent for donation, and that they then go on to support your decision if they are approached on your behalf when you pass away.”

“Family consent if our biggest challenge, as four out of ten families refuse donation when approached. Fewer than 5,000 people die in the UK each year in circumstances where they could donate, so every potential donor truly is precious.

Help in Bereavement

Help in Bereavement is a small Charity, wholly supported by Grants and Donations, founded nearly 35 years ago to meet the needs of bereaved people of any race, creed, gender or age, in the Portsmouth Diocese. Over the years it has expanded and now serves an area from Emsworth to Fareham, Gosport, Hayling Island and Havant to Petersfield.

Trained Visitors give their time voluntarily to provide a service which is free to those in need. In recent years a

specialist section has been introduced, to give help and support to children at the request of their parents, schools, Doctors, or Social Services and are usually visited in their schools during school hours.

Not everyone wants a visit on a one to one basis but would prefer to meet others in a similar position and with this in view there is now a Social Club which meets from 10.am until noon in St. George’s Church Hall, Waterlooville the second Monday of every month for coffee, tea and light refreshments, (there is a small charge for this). Outings are arranged to places of

interest and these have included a visit to a Buddhist Monastery at Chithurst, Stansted House, Hinton Ampner and Lordington Lavender.

New Visitors are usually recruited at an Open Evening in July and training starts in September after which everyone is officially checked by the appropriate departments to safeguard the vulnerable.

Food and Wine Wine of the Month

Martini Asti Sparkling Wine Thing is though, is it to be ‘sparkling wine’ or Champagne, to celebrate those special occasions with, that’s the question? A struggle faced by many a couple planning to get married, especially if they are on a limited budget. Or as one couple put it to me: “Not that we normally like Champagne much. Not a lot to it, as far as we’re concerned; bland, insipid, not much taste.

Sorry about that…. Would far rather go for a decent sparkling wine! Though we did taste some fairly nice Champagne at a friend’s wedding, once. Only to find out that it cost an absolute fortune at over £75 a bottle! But why is Champagne supposed to be so different, is what we’d like to know?

Because, personally, we can’t understand what all the fuss is about!”

OUCH! Okay then… I suppose, to be honest, a lot to do with why Champagne is acclaimed to the extent it is, throughout the world, as being ‘the’ drink to celebrate with on special occasions, is, dare I suggest, largely the result of clever, astute and hugely successful marketing over the past 250 years or so, in associating Champagne with everything to do with celebrity, wealth, privilege, luxury and exclusivity! And, so it is today! The most celebrated event to take place, most recently, being the birth of baby George to Prince William and Catherine, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, on the 22nd of July. And where the sound of Champagne corks ‘popping’ could be heard up and down the country. No less so than in Catherine’s home village of Bucklebury, in Berkshire.

And that, despite what people might or might not think of Champagne as a drink in itself!

So, what does make Champagne different from any other sparkling wine, if at all? For that’s just what Champagne is, a sparkling wine! Or is it that we are mostly paying for the name, as some people insist?

Well, firstly, the most important thing to remember is that the name Champagne can only refer to sparkling wines that come

exclusively from the Champagne region of France, and are made in a renowned centuries-old traditional way; including, from a blend of three main varieties of grape native to the region: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Sparkling wines from anywhere else, on the other hand, and which may have been produced using different types of grape, cannot, under any circumstances, be called Champagne!

That’s the law! It’s strictly forbidden, at least in Europe; albeit these wines may be similar in nature. And there are plenty of superb examples to choose from. Even so, there are still countries around the world yet to come to an agreement. And even the United States makes exceptions, allowing certain wineries to use the word ‘Champagne’ when accompanied by the place of origin, as in ‘California Champagne’.

But then, what are people actually saying when expressing their preference for a ‘decent sparkling wine’ over the ‘official’ sparkly stuff, like the couple above? Is it, perhaps, because they are not keen on dry wines, in general, which Champagne on the whole is? And, that ‘sparkling wines’ offer a wider range of tastes and flavours which appeal far more to the modernday palate? Perhaps!

So, what’s it going to be, my fifth wine of the month, this time for special occasions?

Well, after a few ‘very punishing’ tasting sessions, I am going to be a ‘REBEL’ and come down on the side of a ‘sparkling wine’, and affordably, with: Martini Asti, as pictured. Asda price, at the time of printing: £6.00 per bottle. Sparklingly luscious! But then, this is what I suggested for my best mate’s engagement party, instead of Champagne. And to everyone’s surprise, they were asking for top-ups! So, success all round…

The Adventure ends here: Sadly, however, this is my last article as I am moving away from the area. But I do hope you’ve enjoyed them. Because, for me, it has certainly been an interesting and challenging experience! And I hope my passion for wine has inspired you.

Spicy Roasted Butternut Squash and Lentil Soup This month’s recipe is a very tasty and filling soup which is lovely to serve as a hearty, healthy lunch option or as a soup starter for your next dinner party.

You can vary the amount of spice added to make it more child friendly but the beauty of this soup is how I have made it by roasting the butternut squash in a deep roasting pan, along with whole cloves of garlic and onions to enhance the flavours.

Ingredients: 1 whole butternut squash 6 cloves of garlic 2 onions 1 cup of red lentils 1 vegetable stock cube 2 tablespoons of cumin powder 1 tablespoon of coriander powder 1 tsp of paprika 1 tsp of chilli powder (optional) 2-3 tbsp olive oil Fresh coriander leaves for garnish 1 to 1.5 litres of water/ stock/ liquid from the cooking the lentils Pepper and salt to season 3 to 4 tbsp Lemon juice to taste To do: 1. Wash and soak lentils in cold water overnight.

Add 2.5 cups of water to 1 cup of lentils after washing.

2. Before cooking lentils rinse off water that it has been soaking in. Make up 1 litre vegetable stock.

Cook the lentils until soft in a saucepan with lid.

Making sure that there is sufficient liquid and the lentils do not boil dry. This will take 20 to 30 minutes of cooking. If using a pressure cooker the cooking time can be reduced to 10 minutes.

When the cooking has been completed skim off any grey foam that has accumulated.

3. Peel butternut squash. Cut in half and then in quarters. Remove seeds and pith. Cut into cubes roughly 3 cms. Place butternut squash in deep baking tray and add 1.5 tbsp. of olive oil. Place garlic cloves with skin on and sprinkle on butternut squash- 1 tbsp. cumin and coriander, 1 tsp paprika and chilli if using and season with pepper and salt.

4. Place butternut squash in preheated oven on fan 180 degrees and cook for 30 minutes. Cut onion into 8th’s and add 10 minutes before end of cooking time. Add 1 tbsp. of olive oil and return to the oven.

5. Add the roasted butternut to the cooked lentil and blend using hand blender. Add 2 tbsp. cumin, lemon juice and season with pepper and salt. If the consistency of the soup is too thick more hot water can be added.

6. Serve with fresh coriander leaves as a garnish and enjoy with thick cut bread of your choice.

Award-winning portrait artist exhibits at the Oxmarket in Chichester The Oxmarket Centre of Arts in Chichester hosts an exhibition featuring the work of Polish artist Agata Wojcieszkiewicz from 14th to 27th of October. It’s free and open to the public from Tuesday until Sunday 10am – 4:30pm. The private view will take a place on Monday 14th October at 6pm.

Agata in her studio The exhibition presents Agata’s unique contemporary approach to portraiture and will include a range of paintings and drawings created within last three years including self-portraits, paintings of friends and family as well as commissioned works.

Agata is a figurative painter specialising in oil and acrylic technique, professionally based at Making Space Community Arts Centre in Leigh Park in Havant.

In 2011 she graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk in Poland with an MA in Fine Art Painting. Within a year she won the First Prize and Visitor’s

Choice Prize at The Stride Open Art Competition at Oxmarket Centre of Arts showing a portrait of her father.

In 2012 – 2013 her portrait of an artist friend, Anita Bell, was exhibited in The National Portrait Gallery in London, Edinburgh and Exeter as a part of BP Portrait Award.

Agata said: “My art is like a journal – a reflection of the very intimate process of picturing memories and emotions.” Being an immigrant, she paints people as representatives of two cultures, trying to distinguish the results of historical and cultural influences that shaped her subjects’ lives as well as her own.

Agata’s latest portraits are very narrative and intricately painted, with rich backgrounds seeming to be overtake her compositions. She tells stories by capturing people within their everyday life surroundings to show how the environment defines their personalities, habits, living and working routines.

The Watersports Event of the Year!

Hundreds of watersport enthusiasts made the pilgrimage to Hayling Island this past weekend (30th Aug – 1st Sept) for the National Watersports Festival creating a spectacular site on the water and a fun festival atmosphere. Windsurfing, SUP, (Stand up paddle boarding), kitesurfing and kayaking were all represented with the emphasis spotlighting on the recreational enthusiast.

National Watersports Festival attracted thousands of visitors throughout the whole weekend and with an allinclusive ethos, many new recruits were encouraged onto the water for the first time. Taster sessions provided by qualified instructors meant that everyone could have their share of the action and try new Watersports.

40 people from Havant Borough took part in windsurfing taster sessions on Saturday 31st August (provided by Havant Borough Council). The majority of people were trying windsurfing for the very first time. The taster sessions were delivered by The Official Test Centre (OTC) and offered groups of ten one-and-a-half hour sessions, learning the basic skills of safety and how to stand on the board.

Participants of all ages and abilities had great fun and many are keen to try the sport again.

Current world number one freestyle champion Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo, from Venezuela, wowed the crowds of onlookers with his dazzling display of tricks, flips and contorted moves.

The whole weekend saw much of the UK’s Watersports industry in attendance, promoting their latest equipment with helpful advice and chatting with the visiting public. Initial feedback from NWF organiser Allan Cross is that the festival was the biggest and best yet in its seven year history and that he is looking forward to 2014! Well done to all who were involved – The National Watersports Festival 2013 really was ‘the event of the year!’

Members of Hayling Island U3A are undertaking a project to record the ‘Life and Times on Hayling Island’, during the First World War. The Government is encouraging groups throughout the U.K to highlight this important period in our Country’s History.

It is proposed to produce a book which will recall everyday life on Hayling Island, local employment and the work women had to undertake to support their families with their menfolk away. Over 14 farms existed on Hayling Island in 1914; these farms are being researched to feature in the publication. Montages of the men who lost their lives in the theatres of war in which they served will appear as the unfolding of the war and the social history is recalled. This publication will incorporate the information in the booklet produced by Mrs Janet Coates-Jones in 2000 recording the 78 men whose names are remembered on the Memorial Plaques in St. Peter’s Church. Hayling Island lost almost 10% of the total adult population at this period of history. We hope that this publication will

be of interest to all age groups and prove to be a useful resource for students.

We are keen to talk with the ancestors of Hayling Families who lost family members in the Great War, or who were injured during the conflict. If you have memories of conversations and family stories of Hayling Island at the beginning of the twentieth century we would love to hear from you.

With the cooperation of the Local British Legion an exhibition will be held at Hayling Island British Legion from the 7th.

November – 14th. November 2014. The exhibition will include paintings, drawings and photographs of images depicting various aspects of the conflict as well as the infrastructure of the Island.

It is important that our young people realise the traumatic effect these War years had on everyone.

Navy on the run in the Gulf

Sailors aboard a Royal Navy vessel in the Arabian Gulf on operations with the Combined Maritime Forces took on the blistering heat to run 10K to raise funds for charity back home.

Nineteen members of the ship's company aboard HMS Kent conducted the run for the Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation (DRWF). Many of the runners have friends and family with diabetes.

LPT David Heming explained: "Diabetes is close to my heart as my partner has Type 1 Diabetes and every day is a struggle; although there isn't any cure yet I hope that the money raised will go towards helping people to cope with the illness".

David explained: "The pace was fast from the start but as the time went on the heat took its toll, however this didn't stop some incredible times being set; the fasted man home was Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Robbie Roberts in 38 minutes and the fastest female was Leading Logistician (LLOGS) Jenna Brodie in 53 minutes."

The crew of HMS Kent managed to raise over £700 for the charity on Just Giving and some members will be running for the same charity in the Great South Run on Sunday 27th October.

"We are delighted David and his crew mates have taken up the challenge of

running the 10K in such an unusual manner," commented Chief Exec Sarah Bone.

DRWF has funded more than £8m of vital diabetes research since it was established in the UK. The charity is currently funding 23 researchers across the country as well as the DRWF Islet Isolation Facility at the Oxford Centre for Diabetes Endocrinology & Metabolism (OCDEM) at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford.

"Good self-management is central to reducing the risk of associated diabetes complications. Through our support network we are able to inform, empower and inspire people with diabetes to take action to improve their quality of life," added Sarah Bone "We find people such as David who have personal experience of family or friends living with diabetes are often keen to help as we fund research into a cure, help people to understand their diabetes and learn how to self-manage to stay as well as possible."

Six weeks have seemed to fly by quicker than you can say "this is the Indian summer we were promised a year ago!".Before the school broke up our Director of Lower School, Ms Cox arranged for all the school to receive very interesting (for want of a better word, but not in the boring sense!) "lectures" from a group called 'Hafago' (Havant, Fareham and Gosport) who work with ex-alcoholics and drug addicts. These kind people go to different schools to educate young people.

Their relaxed and in-control demeanour gave us all the confidence to ask questions and get involved with the sessions. These brave men were recovering alcoholics. Their speeches were all unique and thought provoking and when they had finished everyone of us was left with a deeper level of understanding and gratitude towards them for sharing painful memories.

The session started with a speech by Police officer Sgt. James Noble who gave us information about all the good things that the CAP project have done since the school joined it last year. It certainly sounded like the young people of Hayling have been showing that they can behave well and not abuse alcohol as much as in the past.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance collected over a ton of old shoes for recycling on the first ‘Re-Use-Ya Shoes!’ day on Thursday 12th September – and there are still more to come.

Forty two schools across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight threw themselves behind the campaign to encourage children to donate their old shoes, football boots, trainers and wellies and raise those vital funds needed to keep the Air Ambulance

flying and saving lives. Participating schools were asked to see how many bags they could fill and if they could build the highest tower of shoes, with prizes available for the school with the most shoes collected. Shoes of every shape, size, condition and colour were collected, from the boot without a sole to the down at heel stiletto.

Much like the ‘Bag A Bra’ campaign, the shoes will now be sold on through reputable traders in other countries, or if they are in really bad condition they will be used for parts to repair other footwear, so nothing is wasted.

‘Our very first ‘Re-Use-Ya Shoes!’ Day has been more successful than we could have imagined’, commented Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Chief Executive, John Perry. ‘Not only has the campaign raised money for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, but it has taught children about the importance of recycling and helped people in countries world wide. Get that autumn glow After a fantastic summer, autumn has finally arrived and as the long evenings fade so do our tans.

If you’re looking for a safe, healthy glow to give you the feel good factor we have some tips to help.

Fake tanning can be a tricky business and we’ve all seen some examples of a DIY disaster. One of the most fool proof ways to ensure you get a good even tan is to book up and treat yourself to a salon spray tan. Here at Bodyworks we even offer a spray tan that only needs four hours to develop meaning you can look bronzed and beautiful for that impromptu night out.

Whether you’re getting a professional to do the work or doing it yourself at home we have a few guidelines to follow to help you achieve the perfect tan.

Be prepared The week before your tan you should start ‘polishing’ your skin. Add an exfoliation stage into your bath or shower routine to help slough off any dulling skin cells.

Remember to moisturise after every bath/shower. This will keep the skin supple which helps ensure an even absorption of the tanning product.

Get tanning Most self-tan products need to be left on the skin for around 8 hours to develop. Using a mitt can help give an even application and save any orange hand incidents. We advise tanning the face first, adding 1 part moisturiser if you want a softer look. *Be careful to avoid the hairline of you have fair hair.

Add moisturiser to your hands and feet before you tan them and dry off nails with a tissue to avoid staining.

Once you’ve applied the tan stand and let it dry for a few minutes. Whilst it develops avoid putting on any restrictive clothing or getting the tan wet. The best time to tan is an hour before bed then rinse the product off in the morning. Do not scrub the guide colour tan off, use your hands to rub off the excess product in the shower.

Maintaining the tan You can help prolong the life of your tan by keeping the skin moisturised and avoiding exfoliating until the tan begins to fade. Exfoliating when the tan starts to pale will help it fade evenly. If you want to freshen up the tan, using a gradual tan lotion will keep it topped up.

Seasonal Look: Smoky Eyes The party season is almost upon us and we’ll be glamming up and looking sparkly.

One look that always makes an impact at any occasion is the sultry, smoky eye effect. It’s easier to achieve than you think and we’ve produced a step by step guide to help you. This autumn/winter the ‘Block Colour’ look is trending so we’ve added a splash of colour to this classic look.

Firstly, using an eye shadow primer will help your look last for longer and stay put.

Use a cream based primer and apply to lid (allow to dry before next step).

Next apply a slick of black eyeliner to the top lid as close to the lashes as possible. We prefer a gel liner applied with a brush for a smudge proof line.

Add a splash of colour by applying a bright kohl liner beneath the bottom lashes.

Using a brush blend a smoky grey or black powered eye shadow over the lid starting from the outer edge.

To add a further touch of glamour, blend a brighter coloured eye shadow across the crease line of the eye socket and use a brush to blend.

Finally add a highlighter under the brow bone and in the inner corner of the lid to emphasise the eye and make this sultry look pop.

Cystic Fibrosis: 50th Anniversary in 2014 The Great South Run is almost upon us, and will include a contingent of runners doing their best for CF. Meanwhile, Portsmouth’s small but dedicated Branch of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust is planning to celebrate the charity’s 50th anniversary in the coming year, and is keen to hear from anyone who would like to help out. The picture shows some of the local group -- parents, relatives and friends -- who have been meeting monthly since about 1986, volunteering to support the Trust’s aims. Three of the group have been active for over 40 years, and most of the others are not far behind. Sue Kruk has become secretary for the year as she remembers back to the 70s and 80s (when she was a Secretary in London and then in Portsmouth) as well as being aware of the great work of the present day. test within the first few days of life, which, thanks to the Trust, now detects cystic fibrosis, as well as other conditions. This is reassurance for most parents, and for the very few who have CF, it means that treatment can start from birth, before lung damage is caused. Life expectancy is improving all the time, but many precious children and adults are sadly still lost. Every person with CF will need treatment every single day of their lives, often lasting for hours.

Imagine physiotherapy two or three times a day, every day of the year, as well as pills, diet, nebulised drugs, etc. Now, with all the various advances, our CF children, who invariably face their difficulties with courage and humour, can look forward to a reasonable quality of life. The Trust has always advanced research, clinical care and welfare of families, and is determined to beat this cruel and demanding condition for good.

On a sunny Sunday in late September Hayling Island Bowls Club was delighted to present to the Hampshire Asbestos Support and Awareness Group a cheque for £2100, the sum raised by the 100 or so members of the club throughout the preceding year. The cheque was presented to Lynne Squibb and Lisa Booth of HASAG by the retiring Club President, and mastermind behind the fundraising project Brian Pullan, and incoming Club President Dorothy Williams.

Around 50 bowlers were present to witness the short ceremony which was

followed by a Ladies v Gents match which I'm pleased to report resulted in a well-deserved and long overdue win for the Gentlemen.

A cheque for a further £250 was presented to the Hayling Community Responders earlier in the week.

New Havant business aims to slash the cost of replacing tyres By: Becky Lewis

A business in Havant has started up to offer a safer, more cost effective way of maintaining tyres to both domestic and commercial customers.

Nigel Weller, who is from Rowlands Castle, offers his new Puncture Safe service to anyone living the PO postcode area that may want to protect themselves against the burdens of heavy costs associated with replacing tyres after a puncture.

Mr Weller, whose background is in the agricultural industry, identified a need to help large vehicles protect their expensive tyres from frequent replacement. This was something that not only impacted on time but was also a considerable cost to the business.

The Winners!

The Forest of Bere Bowmen's Outdoor Championship took place on Sunday 8th September at their Club field

by Cadlington House off Blendworth Lane, Horndean (PO8 0AA). The early starters were greeted by a storm sending everybody scuttling for cover. However the storm soon gave way to periods of pleasant sunshine.

The competing bowmen ranged from 10 years to 80 plus. Among the bows in use at the Championship were the recurve bows used in the Olympics.

Others were compound bows or longbows.

The photograph shows all of the prize-winners. John Taylor, shooting recurve was Archer Supreme, with Tim Madden next having returned to archery after a gap of many years. Hettie Parkes won the trophy for Ladies Recurve with

husband Shane winning the Novice Recurve prize. With daughters Tessa and Megan winning medals and Hettie and Shane winning the Married Couples Trophy, it was an impressive competition for the Parkes family.

Other winners were John Davies (Gentlemens Longbow), Gill Merrett (Ladies Longbow), Rebecca Giddings (Junior Recurve), Sean Madden (Junior Recurve for younger juniors) and Vince Ibbs on a handicap adjusted score. Others in the photograph won silver and bronze medals.

Everybody enjoyed themselves and most competed again later in September in the last of the summer monthly medals.

Hawks Report - Latest Updates About a quarter of the way through the season and the Hawks have had mixed results which have seen them locked in mid-table. After a very promising opening and a three match unbeaten run, a series of injuries affected results. Goalkeeper Scott Bevan, Striker Dennis Oli, Midfielder Christian Nanetti and Central defender Ed Harris have all been out. Boss Lee Bradbury with only a small squad has therefore had to turn to the short-term loan market and adjust the way of playing to see the crisis through.

With the injured players now gradually returning results and performances are starting to get back on track. Unfortunately the qualifying rounds of the FA Cup came in the midst of the injury crisis and the Hawks failed to negotiate their way through.

Of the local Havant based youngsters, Charlie Searle made his league debut at age 17 against Bishops Stortford. Joe Noakes is out on loan to AFC Totton, where he has performed well, including scoring a goal.

Harry Wedlake has had little chance with the first team but has lead the Academy side through the early rounds of the FA Youth Cup. With the side nearly back to full strength and playing the way Lee Bradbury wishes results are beginning to pick up again. In the expectation of a steady move back up the table now is a good time to get down to Westleigh Park and enjoy the action.

Ladies Sabre Fencing Beginner Course Seacourt Fencing Club, based on Hayling Island, is looking for ladies of all ages with a sense of adventure, a spirit of enthusiasm and a positive attitude to come and learn the art of fencing sabre.

Modern fencing has three weapons: foil, épée and sabre. The sabre is a cutting weapon and fights are notoriously fast, furious and fun! Only thirty years ago, sabre was mainly fenced by men, so there are fewer women who fence sabre than foil or épée. Seacourt Fencing Club wants to redress the balance!

Fencing is a great way to keep fit, burning far more calories than an aerobics class, but it is also skilful and mentally challenging. Older fencers can be just as successful as younger ones by relying on their wits rather than their fitness. Unlike most sports, fencing has a thriving veterans section which holds competitions in age

ranges from 40 year olds, right up to 80+ If you want to take up the challenge of becoming a sabre fencer, book yourself onto our six week Ladies Sabre Beginner Course. This is a relaxed course, with the emphasis on fun, giving you an introduction to sabre fencing. Havant Hockey Club – Early Season Report

The seventh annual National Watersports Festival was held from 13-15 September in fantastic weather off Hayling Island seafront near the Golf Club. This year it was extended to include Kayaking and Kite Surfing alongside SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding) and Windsurfing. It resulted in a spectacular weekend.

The fun started on Friday with a decent sea breeze over a sparkling sea ideal for spectators and the novices and intermediates for which the first day’s event was aimed. Conditions were perfect for the SUP’s and Kayakers and made for a fun opening day! The experienced windsurfers were hoping for more wind on Saturday and Sunday, the main racing days.

The next day saw the spectacle of hundreds of brightly coloured windsurf sails lined up on the shore before heading out to sea for the racing. Adults and children on windsurfers, kayaks and SUPs were splashing around in the sparkling surf near the shore or learning new skills in the taster sessions. Some took part in the racing. Flags, banners, kites, vans, tents and trade stalls packed with the latest equipment created a vibrant, colourful scene. Even Father Christmas appeared in one windsurf race!

There was also the spectacle of the Night Windsurf, a unique tradition of NWF, with a race for honours between the best from the day’s races. Children, decked out in glow sticks, each teamed up with a professional windsurfer for their own a tag race out to a scary, eerily lit marker buoy.

The grand finale, to a backdrop of fireworks, was the tow-in freestyle

demonstration by world class professional windsurfers, including 5 times World Champion Gollito Estredo. The dare devil riders accelerated their roaring jet skis to terminal velocity and suddenly materialised from the darkness into the floodlights to perform spectacular multiple jumps, twists and loops, before the large crowd on the beach.

The spectacle and atmosphere at this years NWF was truly amazing. With over 600 competitors across the disciplines, ranging up to age 70, and 8000 attending the weekend event and parties, the vibe was

ahead of the season proper.

Whilst the Hockey Clubhouse is situated in Havant Park, the main pitch lays nearby in the grounds of Havant College in Barncroft Way Havant.

The Men’s 1 team play in the EHL Conference West League and their next home league game is against University of Exeter, with bully-off at 14.00. The Ladies 1 play in South Division 1 and their next home game is against Southgate on 16 November, starting at 13.30. Both of these games will be held at the Havant College pitch.

The Club also has a strong junior section catering for boys and girls from under 8 years through to under 18. The under 8 and under 10 groups are mixed.

For many of the boys and girls joining the Club it is the beginning of very long connections with the Club.

The two night parties were especially enjoyed as everyone rocked throughout the balmy evenings.

Ian and Carole, of the ‘Inn on the Beach’ at Hayling Island, where the action centred, said “It’s great having a bunch of people focused on enjoying themselves. The Watersports community are great and it was nice to have the kite, kayak and SUP people alongside the windsurfing guys. We really enjoyed this year; best yet!”

Importantly, more than £5000 was raised for the charity W4CR (Watersports for Cancer Research).

Havant Hockey Club began its preparations for the 2013/14 season back in August with evening sessions every Tuesday. The pre-season training sessions were well attended from the Clubs large membership. The pre-season also saw a successful 6 week ‘Return to Hockey Course’ for the many wishing to get back to playing.

Jenny Bullard told me: ‘The Club has six women’s teams, 9 men’s teams and some 250 youngsters from 4 – 18 years.

All of the training, preparation and arrangements for the variety of Hockey fixtures undertaken during the busy season, which commenced in September with a number of friendlies, are backed up and supported by a strong and experienced team of non-playing members.’

The friendlies held in the weeks before the season proper got underway in the middle of September, enabled the various playing squads and groups to get match fit

Hayling Park on the Saturday morning of my visit to this vibrant Club was full of small groups of excited youngsters enjoying football practice. I was greeted by the Club Chairman, Mark Carter. Over a mug of tea and a sponsored cupcake in the Clubhouse next to the Hayling Community Centre, the Chairman explained how the Club, now in it’s fifth season, had risen from the ashes into a successful Junior Football Club.

We were soon out amongst the many young players practicing and having fun.

Mark explained that each age group was led by an FA Level 1 or 2 qualified Coach.

The aim is always to ensure that the Saturday mornings are fun and energetic.

While the youngsters are on the field enjoying their group work, parents and Club members relax in and around the Clubhouse. The Clubhouse keeps everyone fed and watered and at the same time generates income to help support the on field activities and local charities.

The Club is built around family involvement, fair play and charity fund raising. In the 2012/13 season it was fitting that the Club received a fair play award from the Portsmouth Youth League. Should parents have any concerns the Club has experienced Parent Representatives with

access to the Coaches and Club Officials The teams all play in the Portsmouth Youth Leagues for under 8, 10 and12’s.

For those too young for league games a number of friendly games are arranged.

The experienced FA qualified Head Coach, Stuart Hawley, runs the senior under 12 team and leads the Club’s coaching and development programme, ensuring there is always a strong team of FA qualified coaches at the Club. The Club is always looking recruit others willing to assist and qualify as FA coaches.

Most of the youngsters at the Club were boys but when I asked the Chairman and the coaches, they were unanimous in their wish to encourage more girls to join the club. Girls are eligible to play in any of the Clubs existing teams.

Anyone interested in coaching and any parents with young children, including girls, wishing to experience football are invited to contact the Club.

MAKING SPACE Making Way for Making Space Making Space was set up in 2005 and had to beg borrow and steal various venues where it could run its workshops in art, craft and design: Empty venues such as Bedhampton Arts Centre, proved to be the perfect place where people in the community could come together and take part in jewellery making and ceramic designing classes.

Today, the organisation has grown into a fully-fledged team and a brand new building right next to the Greywell Centre in Havant. It is run by a team of four at the purpose built centre where there are 2 teaching spaces.

The project was recently awarded lottery heritage funding and Making Space have begun work on “On the Street Where I Live” which encourages people to express what it is like to live in their community.

The purpose was to explore and celebrate life in Leigh Park from its early development as a housing estate in the 1940’s right up until the present day.

Many residents have come together to bring the area’s history to life. It also gives everyone an opportunity to come together for a fun, friendly and FREE activity. The project have also started the “Memory Box” scheme, where people living in the area can collect together items that

generate memories so that the stories of each box can be shared, stimulating conversation with others.

Making Space is an on-going project, and everybody involved works tirelessly to make sure it carries on providing a service to the community.

Projects are on-going and more information can be found on the website www.makingspace.org. As a taster, upcoming workshops include two that run on Saturday 9th November. One is a session creating up-cycled ceramics and china. – a fantastic chance for participants to reinvent old china making it into something beautiful again.

There is also a crochet workshop running called 'Trim It', which teaches those attending decorative trims and how to edge a garment.

To make your Christmas decoration you will need: Step 1

Christmas Tree template (visit www.joytocreate.com/blog/christm as-is-coming/ to download the template Joy has prepared for you) 2 x 7” squares fabric matching thread few buttons and bits of ribbon small amount of toy stuffing Sewing machine

Step 1 Firstly print off your template on thin card, cut it out, then use it to draw an outline on the wrong side of your fabric square. Place the two squares of fabric right sides together. Do not cut out the shape at this stage.

Step 2

Step 3 Stitch with your machine along the marked line, leaving the bottom of the tree trunk unstitched to allow for turning and stuffing.

Step 4

Cut away the excess fabric leaving about 1/4".

Step 4 Turn right sides out, push out the points of the tree, stuff firmly and sew the bottom edges of the trunk together, turning in the raw edges to keep it neat.

Havant Contemporary Dance

Havant Contemporary Dance is a new community dance outfit. Our mission is to provide classes and workshops which allow us to explore the ways in which the body moves, create equal opportunities for everyone to take part and inspire communities.

This half term our junior class looked at the season autumn. Our workshops have explored the changing landscape along with the weather, and seasonal festivities such as Harvest and Halloween. These topics have been used as starting points which allowed the children to interpret their own ideas into dance movement vocabulary. Although we discover through dance, we feel it is important to aid a child’s ‘whole’ learning experience and therefore incorporate other art forms in our workshops such as storytelling, poems reading, music making and art activities; all of which relate to our current topic. As part of our autumn discovery, the children explored the meaning of ‘Harvest Festival’

Children who attended our harvest workshop and made vegetable people during our craft section of our workshop

and the importance of sharing and helping people in need. As Sharing and Helping became our stimulus for creating dance, the children also began a collection of food which Havant Contemporary Dance then donated to ‘The Beacon’ our local food bank.

Apart from the turmoil going on around the world at that time, we also need to consider what you actually want to achieve, as well as what you need to achieve, which are not often the same thing.

What do I mean by that? Well, almost every client I've ever met will tell you what they think they want, because they have very rarely worked out what they actually need, they also often tell us that they are comfortable with their investments going up and down! Usually what they actually mean is they are comfortable with the ups, but not so much when they go down. Now as professional Independent Financial Advisers, we have to be truthful with our clients at all times, which means always telling them the truth.

Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre Hello, its Giggles again. The Out and Abouter at The Cat and Rabbit Rescue, Sidlesham. Well, we’ve just had our fete and it brought in lots and lots of visitors, which was excellent considering it poured down with rain at the start I thought I would tuck myself in under the hedge and watch the goings on, but Monique had other ideas and told Claire to put me indoors so that I didn’t misbehave. (I was not impressed) Probably it

was because I am now famous, people would want my paw print!

Lenny Longlegs is my very best mate. We used to hang about together till his sight started to go, so he now lives in the posh new garden room with some of the other cats. I usually pop along to see him in the evenings to tell him what’s been happening, as he likes to know how many of our friends have been rehomed. He is very worried about the amount of kittens that keep him awake at night (playing about and dreaming of all the fun they could have with a

loving family). I told Lenny that I would mention to my readers that there are about 200 kittens and 100 cats here and they all looking for that forever home.

I asked Lenny why there are so many kittens this year, and he told me that it was because people just do not get their cats neutered even though the kind people here will help with costs if necessary, and that is why we have this huge number

of kittens.

Postcode Publications IN CELEBRATION OF THE NURSERY RHYME TILES Hayling Island Bowls Club

By: Jane Gregory – Volunteer in Education and Marketing - The Spring On Friday 6 September a special event was held at The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre to celebrate the restoration of the War Memorial Nursery Rhyme Tiles.

Staff, volunteers and distinguished guests met to view the ten panels of tiles and share their memories. The Royal Doulton tiles were installed in the hospital’s children’s ward in 1936; it was named the Jubilee Ward to mark the Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary.

The tiles were designed by William Rowe, whose initials can be seen at the bottom of the ‘Little Jack Horner’ tile.

Among the visitors on 6 September were Nicholas and Diana Rowe; Nicholas is William Rowe’s grandson, and he commented: “I just remember my grandfather, William Rowe, and it’s wonderful that Havant has saved these tiles. He spent his whole life painting, both at Doultons and as a hobby, and these nursery rhyme tiles really were the pinnacle of his career. We were delighted that we were able to be here, representing a family who are all very proud of their grandfather.”

The Spring was pleased to welcome many other guests to the exhibition, including Dave Willetts MP, Deputy Mayor Councilor Marjorie Small and Mrs Virginia Wilson-Smith, Councilor Jackie Branson, and Mr Roger Harrison, Chairman of

Trustees. The Spring’s Director, Ms Sophie Fullerlove, addressed the assembled guests and thanked them for their support.

Visitors to the celebration were invited to write comments in a notebook, and there many remarkable memories were shared. They included this from Mrs Ann Darby, who worked as clinical manager at the War Memorial Hospital from 1992–2000: “Although it seemed inappropriate to have such childish images in a ward for adults and older people, many of the older people expressed what comfort the tiles brought them through their local connections and recollections.”

And from Audrey Fryer: “In December 2011 – a very icy period – I was cared for for two weeks in the former children’s ward. The delightful nursery rhyme tiles were great joy. The elderly lady in the next bed had watched the hospital being built. She had been a Miss Carroll; her father was the architect and builder. She was sad that we were almost the last patients.”

President’s Day

The summer of 2013 has proved to be just about perfect if you are a bowler. All of our major events have enjoyed ideal weather and it has been a pleasure to be on the green, unlike some previous years when bowling was more a test of fortitude and endurance than skill and ability!

Two of our flagship events took place in July, President's Day on the 14th and our Charity Day on the 20th in aid of HASAG, the Hampshire asbestosis charity. Both events were fully subscribed with over 150 people attending the charity day which raised more than £2000 for HASAG. We have also been able to raise a further £250 which will be presented to the Hayling First Responders who do a fantastic job attending medical emergencies on the island before the ambulance can get there.

On Charity Day a match between bowls club members and HASAG members was enjoyed by all and was followed by an excellent barbeque, provided by Neil Hook, and a demonstration of Kung Fu and Tai Chi

by members of the Zheng Dao Lo Martial Arts Academy led by Master Andrew.

Audience participation followed the demonstration which was enjoyed by all concerned. In July Warblington School Hall became Fat Sam’s Speakeasy – the liveliest joint in town – as students performed their production of Bugsy Malone. Full of dance, music and splurge guns, it was sheer joy and delight as the students leapt into their many roles, with action-packed scenes and lines delivered with confidence and charm. The audience loved every minute, as did the students.

Luc Garner-Gibbons, who played Fat Sam, said – “I had great fun and really enjoyed the experience of having a leading role.” Whilst Alice Dibley, who played Tallulah, said “It was really fun and I met lots of people in different years – a great experience”. Mia Lowther who played Dawdy Dan’s Maid said “It was hard work but it all paid off.”

Over twelve specialists from the world of Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics took over the curriculum for the day at Warblington School at the end of the summer term to give the students a hands-on experience of what STEM means in the real world.

Students ranging from 11 to 14 years of age were put into vertical groups to take part in five different experiences. With the focus on ‘hands-on’ students made slimy putty, handled snakes, built a recycled sculpture and investigated the ingredients in a range of junk foods.

Glorious sunshine meant that many activities took place outside the formal setting of the classroom – rockets were fired across the tennis courts and solar powered robots ambled up and down ramps across the playground.

Ian Dunne entertained crowds of students in the Hall, as his radio control

flying saucer swooped over their heads with millimetre precision. In another location students were able to relax in the inflatable planetarium as they watched the night sky come alive above their heads. Local colleges and universities sent their staff and graduates to interact with the students, answer questions and open their minds to a career in STEM. Havant Police demonstrated how new technology, through the invention of Kevlar and smart materials, had revolutionised the protection of officers on duty. The sponsors for the event, Xyratex, entertained groups of students, enabling them to make electronic jewellery, jitterbug drawing machines and write computer programmes.

Students and staff alike felt that the day had been a great combination of doing, watching and doing!

Mayor opens four new shops in Leigh Park See also Page 11 feature

The Mayor of Havant officially opened four new shops in Leigh Park shopping precinct on October 1st. The new shops, which are all managed by independent traders, are situated where the former Netto store was at 37 Park Parade.

Between them, they will offer even more choice to shoppers in a high street which already has a wide array of unique shops.

Buy Sell Baby, L & P Carpets, Big Girls Clothing and Little Cherubs can now all be found on the main precinct. Bunting and colourful shop fronts have been provided which should make them hard to miss. They join a large number of independent stores in the area, including the recently opened Waller’s Wrappers sweet shop as well as Sally’s Computer Services and Carousel Toys & Gifts, both of which have recently celebrated their first year of successful trading.

This upward trend shows no signs of stopping in this area as there are even more new shops scheduled to be opened soon. This goes against the national statistics and certainly proves the sceptics

Cycle Hayling

Good weather meant a great turn-out at the three churches fete.

The Cycle Hayling stand got loads of visitors and contestants for our 'turbo challenge'. This year we had two bikes running simultaneously: one for adults and one for youngsters.

The early pace was set by the girls who dominated the leader board for the first hour, or so. The boys rose to the challenge and in the end the honours were split pretty evenly. The top girl managed to cycle 510 metres in a minute, the top boy managed 550 metres. That's an average speed of 19 miles per hour and 21 miles per hour respectively: Truly impressive on a turbo trainer using a less-than-ideal bike.

long it would take to cycle half a mile.

Their results were just as impressive.

The fastest lady took just one minute (averaging 30 miles an hour), but most impressive of all was our top man who took just 42 seconds at an average of 43 miles an hour!

It was great to receive so many expressions of support for our projects.

We heard many stories of how people enjoy cycling as a cheap and healthy way to get around the island. They just want to do it safely without annoying anyone.

A new edition of Havant's popular borough-wide cycle map, updated to show the new routes built in the past year, is now available. The 2013 edition, produced in partnership with Sustrans and Groundwork Solent as part of the 'Solent Cycle' project, has been extended to cover the southern parishes of East Hampshire District Rowlands Castle, Horndean and Clanfield.

The map includes new sections of cycle infrastructure across the area including 'footpath 88' on Hayling Island and along New Lane in Leigh Park. It also shows new links proposed for completion in the coming year, including two sections of the Hayling Billy Trail either side of Langstone Bridge which will complete this important off-road route between Havant and West Town.
