Hayling for St George 2013 Celebrations on the Queen’s birthday took place at The Eastoke Plaza on Hayling Island on Sunday 21st April 2013 staged by volunteers aged between 16 and 86 years of age.

A Sunset Ceremony brought the afternoon to a close with a salute by the Mayor and Mayoress Councillor Mrs Elaine Shimbart. The White Ensign was lowered to the National Anthem.

After last year’s awful weather it was at least sunny and dry to start, although cold later on. But, no rain for six and a half hours of free entertainment on The Plaza.

Our event; in its second year, drew crowds of up to 500. A welcome boost to traders and businesses after the awful weather we have had recently.

The music was provided by Out of the Shadows whose 60’s and 70’s music had people dancing on The Plaza. The Hayling Musical Society sang Wartime favourites, which we joined in on waving our flags. We had Punch and Judy for the children and Morris Men from Emsworth; also, street dancers ‘2nd to Nun’: as good as any I have

Emsworth Square was filled with troops old and new this St George’s Day, as they marched through the town for the annual St George’s Day military parade.

From 10 o’clock in the morning, the streets were lined with onlookers waving flags and cheering as the George Regis Jazz band warmed up the crowd. At around 10.30, the troops from the 12 Regiment and 47 Regiment Royal Artillery on Thorney Island marched past. They were led by the Royal Logistics Band as the impressive parade began at Queen Street outside the Lord Raglan Pub, continuing through the Square and arranging themselves before the Mayor and Mayoress of Havant, who gave an address to the crowd.

There were more than 100 soldiers in attendance, which included veterans of the Royal Artillery who were awarded the Emsworth Rose by the Mayor of Havant and the Commanding Officer of the Regiments. There were also some who were missed, due to being out on duty in Afghanistan.

It was a very fitting scene, as St George was himself a soldier, so it seemed right to remember those who had fought for their country. The year 2013 also marks the 60th anniversary since the end of the Korean War, and as the Mayor addressed the crowd he spoke of those who lost their

lives in this battle, known as “the forgotten war” due to its closeness in date to the Second World War. They were certainly remembered this St George’s Day, as the Mayor referenced the events in his speech to the crowd of hundreds – some of whom were undoubtedly affected by its devastating aftermath.

The bright sunny weather brought people out in their droves, which was no doubt a relief to the local businesses in the Emsworth area following a prolonged period of cold, damp weather. The sunshine made a great compliment to the day of celebration and remembrance.

Getting Spring, Sprung!

It’s about time that this spring season got well under way! We’ve had the coldest March for 50 years which grew into the coldest April for 20 years but now it seems, thankfully, temperatures are finally approaching double figures. So what better way to get in the mood for the outdoors and get ready to start planting?

Seeds are very easy to get hold of and they grow into a variety of different colours and sprays. If you are a gardening novice, why not try something easy such as Marigolds or Sweet Peas? Herbs are easy to grow too, but watch for any cold weather for things like Basil as you will lose them. If your garden is not the largest of open spaces, then why not plant up some patio pots? If not, then a kitchen window sill will do just the trick.

How do you get started? You will need: *A few small plastic pots *A small bag of compost Plastic pots should be a small size, ideally no bigger than 15cm (6 inches). This is mainly so that the plants become easy to transfer to a larger patio pot when they get a bit bigger. Also, seeds should be thinly spread, so encouraging a few per pot is the

best way forward.

Make sure your pots have holes in the bottom and if you can add one or two stones for drainage. This is to stop the bottom soil getting too soggy when you water your seeds. Fill the pots with soil until it is around half an inch from the rim.

Poke 3-4 small holes in the soil with a pencil and put a few seeds into each hole.

Cover and lightly water, but make sure they are not too soggy.

Store your seeds on saucers or a tray and keep in a warm place with lots of light, keeping the soil damp but not wet. When the plants are big enough, they are ready to be transferred to your boarders and patio pots. Make sure that once they get to this size you are feeding them regularly with liquid feed, so that their leaves stay nice and green and they give you a big show of flowers.

No matter the size of your budget or your garden, there is plenty of growing to be done by everybody. So get outdoors and get planting!

Despite the bad news about Ash die-back and the effect it will have on our landscape, there is also good news. New Trees are being planted all around Havant Borough thanks to a successful application to the Big Tree Plant. This is an England-wide campaign launched by the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Forestry Commission to encourage people and communities to establish more trees in urban and residential areas. It aims to encourage local community groups to plant and care for trees in their neighbourhood, particularly in areas that are currently deprived of greenery.

Two local Tree Wardens, Frances Jannaway and George Fulcher, have been largely responsible for getting this fruitful grant of £25,480 to enhance the street scene and to plant trees locally in public places such as parks and conservation areas. So far 815 trees have been planted, including eleven street trees in Waterlooville and Hayling Island, 500 whips (very small saplings) at Hermitage Stream, Leigh Park, 180 whips along the Hayling Billy Trail, 24 large trees in Leigh Park Gardens and 100 whips to start a tree nursery at Mill Rythe infant school, Hayling Island.

Next planting season, more than 3,000 trees, appropriate to their settings, will be planted by volunteers, including Tree Wardens, with some planting and supervision by HCC, HBC and Groundwork Solent staff. Only the street trees need to be planted by HCC approved contractors. Tree Wardens, other volunteers and local residents will be

involved in the essential task of aftercare which includes watering in dry spells and weeding.

The Tree Warden Scheme is a national initiative to enable people to play an active role in conserving and enhancing their local trees and woods which was founded and is co-ordinated by The Tree Council. Tree Wardens are volunteers who gather information about their local trees, get involved in local tree matters and encourage local practical projects related to trees and woods. There are more than 40 Tree Wardens in the Havant Borough Tree Warden Network looking after trees in 6 main areas around the Borough.

Volunteering at Stansted Park Stansted House grounds are a popular attraction for all the family and are located a few miles from Havant. The grounds are open to the public all the year round for walkers, cyclists, horse riders and dog walkers or just for people to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Kitchen Garden Dream Springs Into Life at Warblington School

Dreams became a reality as a hardy band of Kenwood employees, together with members of school staff, braved arctic weather to prepare the ground for the new kitchen garden at Warblington School. Originally a neglected 500 square metre grassed area at the far side of the school, staff meetings were held and a vision for a working garden was developed and put into action.

Over the two days Kenwood employees cleared away turf and worked on the heavy clay soil with forks and rotavators to provide a sizeable vegetable plot, which will produce the staple carrots, onions and potatoes for use in the food teaching room. Raised beds and poly-tunnels were put in place and concrete bases were laid for the greenhouse and shed.

Kenwood have been very generous to the school and have purchased all of the tools and equipment required to run the garden as a teaching resource. Staff at the school took away seeds and trays of compost so that the area could be planted up as soon as the warmer weather (finally) arrives!

The vegetable kitchen garden will be used as a resource for teaching Food, Horticulture and Environmental Science. It will also be used for team working and fundraising activities. Duke of Edinburgh students are already enquiring about the possibility of using it as a skill towards their Bronze Award.

Later in the summer it is hoped that a nature environment can be established with a pond and wooded area to attract wildlife.

Hampshire’s Credit Union now offering up to £25,000 loans for small businesses There is much discussion about the Small Business Funding gap, and with banks tightening their belts on lending, where do you turn to if you are a small business in need of capital? This local banking tradition, experts believe, contributes towards Germany’s robust economic performance”.

HMRC is checking on-line details to look out for new businesses or people with second homes HMRC are now looking at online information and cross checking other computerised systems like Land Registry to see when people are starting businesses or buying, selling or renting second homes.

People are using Ebay, Facebook and Twitter to start small businesses and are often failing to declare these businesses to HMRC. Even if your business is small, you should still register as self-employed with HMRC. If you aren’t making money you won’t have any tax or National Insurance to pay. If you are losing money, you may get a tax refund, depending on all your circumstances.

Another area they are checking is the Land Registry database. People who sell a second home can be liable for capital gains tax and people who rent out a home can be liable to tax on the profit made each year.

Hayling Gets Two New Cycling Paths in One Month!

Cycle Hayling has also been campaigning to improve cycling infrastructure on other parts of Hayling with the aim of eventually achieving a complete round-theisland cycle route. As part of this cycling route, and to support the future Hayling Blue Flag awards, a need for a cycling route along the seafront from Eastoke Corner to Beachlands was identified, and HBC has obliged with the first part, starting at Eastoke Corner to just west of the COPP Memorial.

Cycle Hayling is aware that the route of this path in front of the COPP memorial has caused some controversy. While emphasising that Cycle Hayling was not involved in planning the route or design of this path, the group does not share the view that it detracts from the memorial.

Indeed if anything is smartens what was a rough and muddy area. As a further benefit this path will enable a greater number and more diverse range of visitors to reach the site, such as wheelchair and mobility scooter users as well as cyclist and pedestrians who will now directly pass the site on their travels along the seafront.

Cycle Hayling would like to express their thanks to Hampshire County Council and Havant Borough Council for all their hard work in providing these paths, and looks forward to helping with implementing future improvements to Hayling’s cycle infrastructure.

Summer is round the corner - so now that this investment has been made - lets see all you budding cyclists out and about trying these new path out!

Cycle Hayling has notched up its first additional bit of cycling infrastructure on the island after several years of campaigning, when Hampshire County Council, in conjunction with Havant Borough Council, completed the conversion to enable cyclist use of Footpath 88 (aka Cinder Track). This connects Eastwood Close (just off Tournerbury Lane) to the Mill Rythe Holiday camp access road and has been done as part of a ‘Safe Route to School’ scheme so that pupils can avoid the very busy Church Road, which is used by all the motorised traffic for Mengham and the south & south-east end of the island.

HAYLING ISLAND PILOT PARKING SCHEME In a bid to help residents and businesses on Hayling Island a new pilot parking scheme is to be introduced giving motorist 20 minutes free parking.

12 parking bays will be marked in two Car Park locations on the Island; West side of Elm Grove at the rear of the shops, the East side of Elm Grove - adjacent to the Health Centre by the end of May 2013.

This will give residents and visitors

opportunity to park their vehicles for 20 minutes free of charge with a no return within two hour policy.

New parking fees were introduced borough wide from 13 February 2013 but Havant Borough Council are working closely with local businesses in an effort to assist ‘speed shoppers’ who simply pop to the shops to purchase newspapers, milk etc.

After that, the sirens were on extremely loud as we took a visit to the fire station in Mengham. We had the chance to dress up and take a tour of the fire engine. The next week we went to the coastguard station which was very interesting and exciting. Our last session involved finger prints, thumb prints and clues to build a DNA profile… it was just like CSI on Hayling Island! The PCSOs showed us the outfits worn when investigating a crime scene, and told us about the sort of clues to look for at a crime scene as well as the kind of techniques used by the criminals.

All this hard work and fun did not come without a reward, though; as a treat, we were taken to Hi ROCK for a climbing

session. Challenging us to great heights this was an opportunity to relax, have fun and be proud of what had achieved as Junior PCSO’s. Also, we were awarded in our school assembly with a framed certificate to certify us as official Junior PCSO’s.

Mill Rythe Junior School – Junior PCSO Twelve lucky children from Mill Rythe Junior School on Hayling Island recently had the opportunity to train to become Junior PCSOs. This involved a variety of activities from litter picking around the block to investigating a mysterious crime scene.

This eight week course began with a simple litter pick. Week two was more exciting as the First Responders paid the school a visit; we were taught `the recovery position` (a rhyme to remember this is “Say hello, bend my knee, slap my face and turn towards me.”) and CPR. Week three involved an adorable dog! No ordinary dog; this was a search dog. His owner told us how his dog came to work with the police and what his dog could do.

Independent Housing Seven tips for a trouble-free move

We’re almost halfway through spring (technically) and the summer holidays are creeping up like a dazed hedgehog who can’t believe it is still this cold. Shortly after those couple months of fun and sun the academic year begins again. Many of us going to, or in, higher education will then find ourselves in a new house, with new people, and a new lack of clarity of what exactly to do…well don’t fear, because I have a few little tips to help make independent housing just that little bit less difficult. So if you’re moving in with new house-mates next year or just want to have a smoother year with your current ones, have a little look at the tips below:

Tip One: Do your fair share of cleaning.You’re going to be sharing a house with other people and as much as you may like your own mess, others don’t. As long as you clean your dishes, and pick up your rubbish you should be fine and avoid problems with annoyed house-mates. Oh, and swing a hoover around once and a while just in case.

Tip Two: Learn to share: These people aren’t your siblings, and if you eat their bag of cookies there’s no mum to keep the peace. This works both ways and its good practice to give a little. Or you may find yourself really needing some of your house-mate’s milk, but he won’t let you because you snapped when he took a bit of butter. Keeping tabs isn’t a good idea either. If you calculate everything anyone’s ever borrowed be sure to remember your own takings at least, or suffer an embarrassing backlash.

Tip Three: Be flexible. Like you, everyone else has a way they like to be in their own home. If you go into independent housing, with complete strangers, and expect to act how you did at home without contention then you’re going to have a hard year. It’s important to try and be a little understanding of your housemates and at the same time not be too pushy with your own habits. If you are a budding naturalist, then I’m sorry, maybe just keep it to your room. If you’re not willing to compensate on your home comforts then you might find yourself having to look for a new house at the end of the year.

There you go. Three little easy tips to help you have a drama free year in independent housing. As a second year about to go into their third year of independent housing, I hope you take on some of this advice and have a great time at university.

Buying a new home can be an exciting but sometimes slightly daunting prospect.

For many, choosing the perfect place to live and then looking forward to moving in is an experience to be savoured.

And the purchasing process can be easy and straightforward, according to Paul Sams – partner and conveyancing specialist at Eric Robinsons Solicitors. He gives his tips for a simple and enjoyable buying experience.

1. Budget - You will already have thought about how much you can afford to spend on a new home – and given yourself a budget. In addition to your deposit, make sure you have set aside money for any little extras, like a mortgage survey (about £400) and local searches (about £200). These payments will need to be made before you complete your purchase.

2. Choose your solicitor or conveyancer carefully - Your housebuilder will be able to advise and provide you with details of experienced local professionals.

Above all, make sure you talk to a human being – rather than dealing with them only online. Also, choose a solicitor who is based in the area near to your new home. They may know things that you don’t about the history of the area.

3. Have your identification documents ready - In order to buy your new home, you will need to prove that you are who you say you are. This is a straightforward process of providing original identification documents or copies that have been certified by someone in a position of authority, such as another firm of solicitors or bank. Have these documents ready to avoid delays.

4. Keep your finances simple - You will need to provide details and evidence of your income and outgoings, so that all parties know you can afford to buy your new home. To save time and effort, try to make sure that these are all shown in one bank or building society account.

5. Have your deposit ready - The deposit for your new home is required at the time you exchange contacts with your builder. Make sure this is ready and waiting in an accessible account. If not, there could be a delay before you can exchange and then complete.

6. Pay attention to detail - Make sure you read any information from

your solicitor carefully. They will usually point out important factors but you should make time to familiarise yourself with the details of your new home and your contract documents.

7. Stay in touch - Your builder and solicitor will keep in touch with you throughout the entire process – keeping you up-to-date with progress. But that does not mean you can’t contact them if you have any questions or concerns.

“Hear all about it” from Havant’s Talking Newspaper PO9 & PO11 Articles are now being broadcast for listeners enjoyment

Three of our readers - Sarah Bennett, Malcolm Gunton and Sara Freeston - in our studio preparing to record the talking newspaper

Being part of a community is important for everyone but it’s not so easy to keep up-to-date with local news and issues if you’re unable to read newsprint. Havant Borough Talking Newspaper is a charity which seeks to bridge that gap.

Every fortnight, an hour-long recording is made of local news stories and events. It is delivered, completely free of charge, to around 200 blind or visually impaired listeners resident in the borough of Havant.

Articles are taken mainly from The News and, with kind permission, from community newspapers, such as the Postcode Publications. A quarterly magazine is also available.

A raft of volunteers edit, produce and record the Talking Newspaper and because

the charity receives no public funding, its fund-raising volunteers are particularly important.

Chairman, Mr Keith Stoneman, said: “We were founded in 1993. This year, we’ll be celebrating not only our 20th anniversary but also our 500th edition.

Many of our listeners are elderly, often living alone with sight problems. They’re unable to read a newspaper so listening to our recordings helps keep them in touch.

They particularly enjoy hearing the friendly, familiar voices of our readers delivering local news to them.”

One of the familiar voices is that of Tim Gudgin, the former BBC football results announcer. Tim is a volunteer who brings his talents to the recording studio not only as a reader but also as an engineer.

Today, the Talking Newspaper is provided on memory sticks as well as on cassette tapes. These can be played on RNIB Daisy players or computers but if neither is available then memory stick players, specially designed for visually impaired people, are available free of charge.

Those who enjoy walking round Chichester Harbour will be aware of the attractive shore walk from Emsworth westwards to Langstone passing Nore Barn Woods which are just at the western end of Emsworth (about 20 minutes from the town centre).

The local Friends of Nore Barn Woods spearheaded a project last Autumn to protect a short stretch of shoreline which was vulnerable to high tides . The sea had undermined the natural bank there and threatened several mature oaks as well as threatening the path nearby. No public money was available, so the Friends raised over £15,000 and worked with the East Solent Coastal Partnership engineers. The outcome is a rammed earth bank which, for the time being, is protecting the oaks and the path.

Mike Thomas from the Friends explains the next phase : “We are proud of the bank but we would like to improve it by adding special blocks (Armorloc) to make it stronger long-term. The engineers say this is possible but there is no budget for it. We know the woods are popular with everyone who visits Chichester Harbour, so we want to do all we can to protect this stretch of shore.”

everyone celebrated with him and sang happy birthday. The crew was very supportive and we got to do a variety of jobs, including operating the camera. Overall, it was exhausting and I now realise that careers in the media industry involve extremely long hours Russell Thorne helps set up a shot. with early starts and late finishes. It was worth it though."

Russell said: "It was an amazing experience and a good insight into how professional sets operate. It was particularly useful as we are both creating a music video as part of our A2 coursework and this helped with the research and planning element."

Russell and Anna are both big fans of Conor Maynard so were starstruck at first.

Anna said: "It was really exciting to meet Conor, especially as it was his birthday on the day of the shoot and

Spirit of the South ‘Spirit of the South’ is a harmony chorus for ladies of all ages. As teach CD’s are supplied, it is not necessary to read music. We are very fortunate to have a fantastic Musical Director and a very talented and funny (in a ha ha way) voice coach.

We have had a very good year singing at parties, residential homes etc. and our Christmas Chorus raised almost £500 for The Rowans Hospice.

This year we are hoping to sing our hearts out at summer fetes and barbeques etc. Adding to all this we have a very friendly social life with karaoke nights, barbeques and quizzes . So come on and sing with us and raise your spirits, feel well and simply have fun!

Unemployed group host a coffee morning for the elderly

Community First East Hampshire and Havant Council for Community Service have been keen to develop joint working opportunities and as a result, the Board of Trustees are delighted to announce the merger between Community First East Hampshire and HCCS Community Action commencing on 1 September 2012.

The new body will be trading as Community First HEH. These two local Councils for Voluntary Service have taken the bold step to join their services to ensure that the new organisation is in a robust position to provide a wealth of services to voluntary groups and the local community for future generations.

On Friday 22nd February a group of unemployed people hosted their first volunteering event at Abbeyfield Sheltered Housing, Emsworth Road, Havant.

The 12 V Team volunteers baked cakes and biscuits for the event and organised a quiz which included a music round with tunes from years gone by. At one point the whole room was singing “It’s a long way to Tipperary”, written by John Judge, a war time song remembered by all generations.

Janet Duggan, the V Team Co-ordinator said “It was fantastic to see the confidence of the volunteers growing through helping other people. The purpose of the group is for individuals who have been out of work for longer than 6 months to come together and volunteer as a team, making a real difference to the community”. The coffee morning was a huge success with staff from Abbeyfield inviting the V Team to come back again. Abbeyfield provides sheltered housing for older people in Havant and they currently have vacancies.

The V Team are looking for future opportunities and would welcome any request from community groups who need a team of volunteers for a few hours.

Perhaps you manage a community building that needs some light gardening doing, or spring cleaning; are you are an

environmental group that needs help with a particular project or do you need support at a summer fair/event? If you are an individual who would like to get involved with the Project, meetings take place every 2nd and 4th Friday of the month (11.30am to 1pm) at The Pastoral Centre, Petersfield Road, Havant. Janet Duggan states “volunteering not only increases your skills and looks good on your CV, it can also increase confidence and give people the opportunity to make new friends”.

Fetzer White Zinfandel Rosé Spring time at last!

And away with the ‘Winter Blues’ - well hopefully, anyway! It always makes us feel gloomy and downin-the-mouth this time of year, as a result of the freezing cold wet weather we really just want to forget now! And, about time too!

There again, being able to shake off the recession would be good? Not that I can promise anything on that score! Even so, look on the bright side, that’s what I say! Be cheerful, be happy! Well, at least, just for the next few minutes, if you can.

Because spring really is a fantastic time of year for partying, getting together with family and friends - or maybe, with someone very special! So, why not join me and celebrate ‘everything that is spring’ with this, my second, wine of the month.

Fetzer White Zinfandel Rosé How can I describe it? On its own: elegant, lovely, with flavours of cherries, strawberries, pineapples and grapefruit. What can I say, absolutely sublime! And, interestingly enough reminds me a little of when you sit back and relax on freshly cut grass, on a summer’s day… full of body, with a lot going on, there is no doubt at all this wine definitely has a story to tell. As if - and I can hardly believe I am saying this - the wine maker was in love when he made it! I know? It is such a beautifully romantic wine; with essences of first date couples, intimate liaisons, comforting picnics, barbeques, and evenings-out with best friends. But, be warned, it is a bit of a showoff on the quiet! As if saying, “Try me! You will love me, I promise! For I’m not your ordinary cheap rosé! I am unique! And, I go well with food!”

This is why - if it is not being too presumptuous - you can so easily see yourself spending time in the kitchen preparing a romantic meal for you and your

partner. Or maybe your first date? Now there’s a thought!

For, as an accompaniment to food, Fetzer White Zinfandel Rosé pictured here (Fetzer, by the way, I only mention it because it can be confusing, is the vineyard or winery, in California, USA, where they grow the grapes and make the wine; and White Zinfandel is the type of red grape yes red, not white grape - the wine is made from, the red grape skins being removed just in time, after the crushing process, to give the wine its perfect rosé colour) Waitrose price, at the time of printing: £7.99 a bottle - goes particularly well with Asian dishes and with Thai prawn and rice noodle salad, and Thai dressing - which you can get as a ready-made in Asda - your senses, I promise you, will go into overdrive! Other than that, this outstanding Rosé just yearns for the company of dishes such as chicken pesto pasta, and anything barbeque. Though, I do find certain cheeses tend to make the wine taste a little bitter., but that might just be my taste-buds.

A ’Light’ Chocolate Cake Recipe for you to Enjoy!

You might well be asking how does ‘light’ and chocolate go together. This recipe has been refined by reducing the amount of sugar and fat to make it ‘lighter’ in calories. It has also been made ‘light’ by changing the techniques employed in the preparation of the cake, along with the addition of a couple of extra ingredients.

The recipe uses dark chocolate which has many health benefits and unfortunately space constraints mean that I am unable to go into any detail here. If you would like to find out more about Food Fiend Experience please go to: www.foodfiendexp.com Ingredients 125 gms dark chocolate (min 70% cocoa) 6 eggs 100 gms caster sugar 60 gms butter 120 gms ground almonds 30 gms flaked almonds 1 tsp baking powder 50 gms self raising flour (optional, omit for a denser cake) Method 1. Line 23 cm loose bottom cake tin with grease proof paper.

2. Separate 3 eggs and place egg whites into additional mixing bowl.

3. Break remaining 3 eggs into the bowl with the egg yolks and add caster sugar whisk until fluffy.

4. Break chocolate into small pieces in microwaveable dish and add butter and then microwave on low power until melted. Stir mixture.

5. Add chocolate mixture to sugar and eggs and beat until mixed completely.

6. Mix in ground almonds 7. Whisk egg whites until stiff.

8. Fold in eggs whites into egg and chocolate mixture and flaked almonds.

9. Fold in baking powder and self-raising flour if using.

10. Pour mixture into a lined tin and bake in fan oven 190 for 20 to 25 minutes or until cooked.

11. Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

BEEF RECIPES FROM HAMPSHIRE FARMERS’ MARKET BRISKET IN BEER

Ingredients (Serves 4-6)

2 tbsp vegetable oil 275g onions, roughly chopped 450g carrots cut into chunks

1kg brisket (boned &rolled) 2 celery sticks, thickly sliced 675g potatoes peeled &cut into chunks 325ml beef stock 1 bay leaf 1 tsp soft light brown sugar 1tbsp tomato purée

2 tbsp plain flour 450ml beer (not lager) 3tbsp chopped fresh thyme 2tbsp wholegrain mustard Sea salt & black pepper to season

Method Preheat the oven to 180C/Gas 4. Heat the oil in a large flame-proof casserole pot, and brown the brisket all over until golden. Then remove the brisket from the pot and drain it onto a double layer of kitchen paper. Add the chopped onions to the pot and cook for about 4 minutes or until they are just beginning to soften and turn brown, stirring all the time. Then add the celery, carrots and potatoes to the casserole pot and cook over a medium heat, for about 2-3 minutes or until they are just beginning to colour.

Stir in the flour and cook for a further 1 minute, stirring continuously. Pour in the beef stock and the beer and stir until well combined Bring the sauce the boil, stirring continuously with a wooden spoon. Add the bay leaf, thyme, sugar, mustard, tomato purée and plenty of seasoning, place the brisket on top, cover with a tight lid and transfer to the oven.

Cook for about 2 hours and 30 minutes or until the meat and vegetables are tender.

Adjust the seasoning and add a pinch of sugar if necessary. To serve, remove the meat and carve into thick slices. Serve with the vegetables and plenty of gravy.

SIMPLE AND EXCELLENT BEEF AND SHALLOT CASSEROLE Ingredients (Serves 4-6) 1.3 kg best braising beef 6 shallots, preferably banana (long) ones, peeled and left whole 6 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped small Fresh thyme – 5 or more small sprigs 2 fresh bay leaves, or 1 or 2 dried 1 teaspoon beef herbs blend; thyme, marjoram, oregano and parsley 2-3 tablespoons rape seed oil, plus more for frying ½ teaspoon ground white pepper or several grinds black pepper ½ litre chicken or beef stock, preferably home-made 1 glass white wine

Method Dice the meat and put in an earthenware bowl with the fresh thyme, extra virgin olive oil, pepper, beef herbs and bay leaves (NO SALT). Stir well to coat meat and leave in fridge to marinade for at least 1 hour, half a day maximum. Stir the mixture occasionally during the marinating time if you get the chance. Take out of the fridge an hour or so before cooking, to bring the meat to room temperature.

Warm some olive oil in a heavy-bottomed saucepan and gently fry the whole shallots, adding the garlic after 2 minutes, then cook for a few minutes more. Add the meat, having extricated it from the marinade, and allow it to colour, stirring gently. When no more pink can be seen, add the glass of wine and the stock, bring the mixture just to simmering point and cook either on the hob over a very low heat or, better still, in a low oven (150ºC) for 1 ½ hours or until meat is tender. Season to taste.

Serve with mashed potato, to sop up the delicious gravy!

DELICIOUS FOOD AT HAVANT TANDOORI Early in 2013 Mo Miah and his staff at Havant Tandoori opened their doors and the town has gained a real gem of a restaurant. Their menu is very comprehensive indeed with all the usual candidates you would expect to see but hidden amongst them are some really interesting dishes.

I arrived with some colleagues one cold and wet evening and was welcomed with a very warm greeting from Mo and his staff. Armed with a few beers and some wine (this restaurant is not licensed) we started with the traditional poppadoms and chutneys and decided although there was a very comprehensive range of starters on the menu, to go straight into the main courses. The ladies both elected to order Chicken Tikka as a main course with salad but the two men decided to experiment.

I ordered Chicken Tikka Korai and my colleague ordered Makanwala Lamb with of course Pilau Rice. Side dishes of mushroom bhaji, tarka dall and honey chicken. The Korai arrived in the traditional cast iron dish - very hot

nice and spicy but the star dish was the Honey Chicken - quite hot but really sweet with the honey taking the heat out of the curry - a very interesting dish. Perhaps my next visit I will scan the menu more deeply - Wild Lebu (Bangladeshi aromatic dish cooked with lemon) or Chicken Kodu (cooked with sweet pumpkin) looked interesting.

We debated whether to have a desert or not but Mo suggested a plate of pineapple and bananas fritters with ice cream to try, a really nice way to end a thoroughly good evening.

Mo says that most of the dishes can be cooked as a vegetarian option and his chef would always enjoy cooking any dish to order that is not listed on the menu. The restaurant is open every day from 5.30pm until midnight. Takeaway orders can be given and free delivery on orders over £12 as well.

I recommend you visit this newly opened restaurant to enjoy well cooked food and a warm and genuine hospitality, and look carefully at the menu - don't be frightened to try something different!

Waterlooville Music Festival in its eighth year takes place from Saturday June 8th15th. This year the Festival has taken the exciting step of commissioning a new work.

The composer is Roderick Starr. The Festival is keeping within their brief of encouraging local musicians as Rod lives in Emsworth with his organist and accompanist wife Stella Starr. His new piece is called Scherzo Grandioso. It will have its premiere at The Last Night of the Proms on Saturday June 15th.

Next year there will be a competition for composers to submit a piece to the festival and the winner will have their piece performed. More information on this will be available soon.

Tickets for the Festival week are £6 for the evening concerts (£5 in advance) and £7 for the Last Night of the Proms. There is a passport ticket costing £25 which will get you into all the concerts bar the Last Night of the Proms.

Havant Borough Council is working with all local authorities across Hampshire to set up a 'collective energy switching service' which will enable gas and electricity consumers in the county to combine their purchasing power and get a better deal on their bills. This project aims to save our residents money and reduce fuel poverty.

There are approximately 760,000 households in Hampshire. If just two per cent sign up to switch energy supplier through Switch Hampshire, this would give a combined purchasing power of just over 15,000 customers, enabling the negotiation of greater discounts, and potentially saving customers around £60 to £200 a year on their energy bills.

All residents have to do is register, Switch Hampshire will do the rest. There is no charge to take part, and no obligation to make the switch once a quote has been received. Residents will be able to sign up for the scheme from Monday 22 April 2013 until Monday 3 June 2013.

What’s on Customs and Exiles Morris Dancers are coming to Hayling Island!

We come from Berkshire/ North Hampshire, and were started about 4 years ago from the cream of local sides. We wanted to create a first-rate Morris team, with a very high standard of dancing and musicianship. We can rightly claim to be one of the best Morris sides in the South of England, rapidly gaining a reputation for excellence and fun.

Unusually, we dance in 2 different styles and kits, North West Morris, which is danced in clogs, wearing shirts, holding either rope slings or short sticks with bells on and dancing upright with complex movements, a rant step with occasional high kicks, and Border Morris, where we wear tatter coats, masks and carry big sticks which we clash and dance a lot more boisterously.

We're dancing on Hayling Island on Saturday and Sunday, 15th and 16th June at various locations, mostly pubs. In fact, there are only 2 pubs we're not dancing at! We hope to be by the funfair and on the prom at Eastoke Corner, too. So come along and have some fun, we'll make the sun shine for

you and bring you good luck!

Sailors and would-be sailors will be welcome to visit Hayling Island Sailing Club during their Open Day on May Day Bank Holiday, Monday 6 May. D-Day is not all about Portsmouth!

The borough of Havant has ambitious plans to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day in June 2014.

Thousands of troops were camped or billeted in the area prior to the invasion taking place.

Six evening public performances are scheduled for Emsworth's South Street car park. Local playwright Julian Sluggett is working on the script for this which will focus on the effect that D-Day preparations had on local families. It will also include a Glenn Miller-style orchestra, and Lindyhoppers, and the car park will become an Artpark with works from local artists on display so that the public will have their visit enhanced. A substantial DVD projector is being acquired so that relevant images can be projected large-scale onto buildings in St. Peter's Square which the public can see after the performance.

Meetings have been held with the retired station commander for Thorney Island, and a retired Royal Navy commander which have unearthed very useful contacts as the organisers seek to secure WW2 landing craft for the performance, and various other 'props'.

The evening events are free to attend although there will be a collection on at least one of the evenings for SSAFAS Soldiers, Sailors, Air Force Welfare Association.

Ancillary events are still being planned and include working with Millstream Productions (Emsworth) to capture the recollections of those alive at the time and living in the borough. This is a particularly important and intergenerational project using local school students because the borough and the surrounding area has expanded in population since 1944 and many people may be totally unaware of the effect which D-Day had on the area.

Readings of WW2 poetry are being planned - poignantly in the church on

Thorney Island whose churchyard contains the graves of several military personnel. A one-man show based on the letters written by a Canadian soldier back to his sweetheart during the lead-up to D-Day will be enacted. One of the prominent Emsworth restaurants is engaging with a local school to work with them in producing a lunch based on ingredients which were available at the time.

Ideas are still being developed and hope to include The Ship Hotel (Chichester) where the decision to invade was taken, Southwick House which was the main planning room, and the Copp Memorial organisers on Hayling Island. Emsworth museum is planning a substantial exhibition.

Considerable enthusiasm is being generated for the idea of turning North Street (Emsworth) down to St. Peter's Square and on into South Street, into a WW2 town. This would involve shopkeepers prepared to dress in period costume, windows with blast-tape across them, and where safety permits, sandbags outside buildings.

Links are also being formed to profile the role which Hayling Island played in the preparations. Mock invasions were staged there and landing craft built, not to mention the construction of the vast Mulberry Harbours (60 feet high and 200 feet long).

Last years heavy summer rain put a damper on many things. This included hopes of a Teddy Bears’ Picnic at Bidbury Mead. This year, disappointed teddies will be hoping for much better weather on Saturday 6th July when they gather between 1 and 2pm to enjoy a picnic before the Bedhampton Summer Show. The best dressed there will be hoping to win a prize.

The Show is the largest free event in the Havant calendar: a traditional village fête with stalls, sideshows and arena events opened by the Mayor at 2pm. Funds raised support the community work of the two local churches, including the nearby historic St Thomas’s church.

Nestling alongside the Bedhampton Conservation Area, the latest plans for upgrading the many recreation facilities at the ancient Bidbury Mead will also be on display.

ABSEIL CHALLENGE Doris Long MBE at last year’s Abseil Challenge for The Rowans Hospice

Registration is now open for The Rowans Hospice annual Abseil Challenge and with a change of venue, organisers are hoping for a big take-up from younger people to join ‘Daring’ Doris Long on her 99th Birthday when she will attempt to break her own Guinness World Record to be the oldest person to abseil.

This year’s Abseil Challenge takes place at Portsmouth University’s 11-storey Mercantile House on Saturday 18th May and is open to all ages and abilities as full training is given on the day.

Each year the abseil raises vital funds for Hospice services in Portsmouth and South East Hampshire for people with lifelimiting illnesses so as well as fulfilling a personal goal, participants can be proud of themselves in the knowledge that they are helping others.

Daredevil Doris Long is something of a

local celebrity a s a result of her extreme style of fundraising for The Rowans Hospice and has been recognised with a MBE and a Pride of Britain award. In previous years Doris has been joined by Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans and Meridian TV anchor-man Fred Dinenage.

Ali Corbett, Events Fundraiser at The Rowans Hospice and organiser of the abseil, said: “Doris is a huge inspiration for anyone looking to take on a challenge and she proves that you’re never too old. It would be fantastic for Doris to do it again and I’d encourage everyone to come and have a go themselves.”

A move just along the road from Ferneham Hall in Fareham to Holy Trinity Church in West Street allows Havant Chamber Orchestra’s string sonorities to blossom in the wonderful church acoustics with contrasting colour from flute and saxophone on Saturday 18th May at 7.30pm.

While Bach (Suite No 2 in B minor), Grieg (Holberg Suite) and Dvořák (Serenade for Strings) are familiar - even ‘household’ - names and also favourites with many music-lovers, Glazunov and his Saxophone Concerto, must be less familiar.

He was a Russian contemporary of Grieg and Dvořák and studied with RimskyKorsakov. The Sax concerto was one of his last compositions, written in 1934 and is a ‘standard’ in the Saxophone repertoire.

Soloist Victoria Puttock’s family lives locally and she was taught by Rob Blanken and Helen Walton, (both clarinettists in the Havant Orchestras) and after graduating at Trinity College of Music in the summer will begin a Masters of Performance course at the Royal College of Music.

Catherine Nicholson is the flute soloist in the Bach Suite and has been a member

of and a soloist with the Havant Orchestras for many years and in addition is a talented, very well-known and popular musician throughout the southern area.

Robin Browning who conducts Southampton University Symphony Orchestra and the Petersfield Orchestra is a welcome guest in place of Musical Director Peter Craddock while violinist Brian Howells will lead the Orchestra.

David Goodall has called his preconcert talk (at 6.30pm) ‘The Last of the Mohicans’ which was Shostakovich's name for Glazunov! At the same time, younger folk are invited to join ‘The Upbeat Club’ for their own introduction to the concert.

To conclude the pre-concert entertainment there will be a short Interlude by local young musicians.

What’s on Bowls, not just a load of mis-shapen balls, actually!

Hayling Island Bowls Club was founded in the early 1980's and is based alongside the Community Centre, Station Road, Hayling Island, PO11 0HB. Currently membership stands at over 100 bowlers but new members are always welcome to join during the summer season which started on 1st April and ends on 30th September.

To encourage new members two open days are planned for 27th April and 5th May when prospective new bowlers can come along between 10am and 4pm to try out some of the club's bowls (also known as 'woods' for historical reasons) on the wellmaintained green adjacent to the clubhouse. Flat-soled shoes are required on the grass but the club is usually able to loan suitable footwear to anyone needing them on the open days.

New members are guaranteed to enjoy the Monday and Friday afternoon "rollups" where they will be able to learn the rules and strategies of the game in friendly competition between teams drawn at random from all those present. They will be assigned a mentor who will advise and guide them through the first few months

when things may seem unfamiliar or confusing. Being principally a game of skill and strategy women and men compete on equal terms (in fact our 'ladies' have beaten the 'gentlemen' on the last two occasions that a match has been held between them).

This year the club is supporting the charity HASAG which stands for Hampshire Asbestos Support & Awareness Group. A 10 mile charity walk took place on 19th March raising the sum of £726 for this very active and worthwhile charity. We are also donating part of the proceeds from our social events to this group. Lee helps raise awareness of Wessex Cancer Trust!

Lee Scott, 45 of Cowplain has been volunteering for many years but he is now helping LinkedUp Fundraising, a new Community Interest Company which focuses on fundraising for charities across the Portsmouth region, to bring awareness to Wessex Cancer Trust (Reg No. 1110216).

Nine events are planned for Wessex Cancer Trust between now and January 2014. Lee says “There is so much to do.

Wessex Cancer has formed a “Sing for Life Choir” in Portsmouth to replicate the successful and popular choir for cancer patients and their families in Southampton but we are also focusing on events to get the people of Portsmouth and surrounding areas more involved.”

The first is on Sunday 12th May. It is a Children’s Sponsored “Tiddler’s Trek” (fancy dress optional) £3.50 per child, a 1.5 or 3 mile route, to include a goody bag.

Accompanying adults are free. The walk is along Southsea Seafront and Common,

meeting and starting from Canoe Lake at 10am. Pre-registration is preferred but also £4 on the day. The children will be waved off by mascots for encouragement!

Barratt Homes Prize awarded to Southampton Solent University student

Barratt site manager wins industry award Paul Ebbs, site manager for major national house-builder Barratt, has won a prestigious national award.

Paul was announced as the winner of the

Project Manager category in the Duke of Gloucester’s Young Achievers Scheme during a ceremony in London where he received his award and met the Duke himself.

These awards recognise exceptional young professionals in the construction industry, with the aim of promoting working in construction to young people from all walks of life.

Paul said, “I’m so thrilled, and I really can’t believe I won!

It was a real honour to be in a room with so many other people making an impact through their role in the construction industry, and to share the whole event with my wife and parents made it extra special.

PROCLAMATION OF THE KING AT HAVANT The morning was ushered in by the ringing of bells, flags displayed from the tower, and every demonstration of loyalty: At twelve o'clock, the inhabitants assembled at the Bear Inn, and formed the following procession: A Gentleman on horseback; constables and Tythingmen - with staves; band of Music; old Volunteer Standard; Churchwardens - with white wands; Town Crier; Lord of the Manor accompanied by the Clergymen of the Parish supported by Parish Officers, with wands; new Volunteer Standards; twelve gentlemen who were present at the Proclamation of George III; the remainder of the procession consisting of Havant inhabitants.

In this order, the procession, decorated with laurel, moved to the East End of the town, when the Crier proclaimed silence, while the Steward of the Manor, on behalf

of Sir George Thomas Staunton, Bart, Lord of the Manor of Havant: should proclaim the accession of His Majesty, King George IV to the throne of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

The proclamation being there made by the Steward, the air resounded with God save the King, and loud and hearty cheering, the band striking up a national air; the procession then moved onto the West End of the town, when the second proclamation was made as before; the third upon the bridge; and the fourth and last at the Market Cross, with the like formalities.

A great number of oranges were next thrown among the crowd, and in the afternoon the populace were regaled with strong beer to drink the new King's health, the liberal donation of Sir George Thomas Staunton, Bart; in the evening a very large party of Gentlemen of Havant and the

Driving Project at Warblington School The ‘Driving Project’ is an initiative created by the All Drivers Academy in Portsmouth. It gives teenagers between the ages of 14-17 the opportunity to learn essential driving skills, legally on private ground and without the need for a provisional driving licence. The skills taught are similar to those taught in the first set of standard driving lessons, and are taught by two highly qualified DSA approved instructors. Each group of six students gets six hours of theory and driving practice spread over three weeks. This chance to learn a practical real life skill was partially funded through a grant obtained from Hampshire County Council.

It was fun learning about the different controls and it was good that we could encourage each other in the car to do well, although one of us, mentioning no names, nearly crashed the car whilst learning how to turn, but we all eventually got better. Hayling Island Dairy Announces Brand New Spinnaker Contract

A farm on Hayling Island has just received some good news in the form of a new contract with the Spinnaker Tower!

The Northney Dairies, who already supplies the finest ice cream to local businesses in the area, won the contract after the Spinnaker ordered a few samples – and they just couldn’t resist!

Northney Dairies, which is part of Northney Farm on Hayling Island, makes all their products on site using their own milk from their impressive Ayrshire herd. The delicious ice cream is made with only the finest natural ingredients, and it is already popular with the locals who visit the farm regularly to try it out.

The success of the ice cream grew from its popularity at the farm café, and the dairies now supply a wide range of local shops and cafes around the Hampshire area. This expansion allowed the range of ice cream to grow and they are now famous for their selection of over 20 delicious flavours and their “Ice Cream Sundays” which are held regularly throughout the summer.

Now that the Spinnaker Tower are on board, this will mean great things for the business, which was set up in 2009 by Tim

Pike as a diversification project. Tim said: “We are pleased to add the Spinnaker Tower to our growing portfolio of clients.

We work closely with a lot of the businesses in the area, so to have the Spinnaker Tower on board is a real landmark for us”.

Tim is proud that local businesses are seeking local suppliers and believes that it is important to support one another, a sentiment that is shared by Ms Emma Lennox, who is the Food and Beverage Manager at the Spinnaker Tower.

Emma commented: “We’ve been looking for a local supplier for a while and we’d heard of Northney Farm’s good reputation and fantastic ingredients, so we couldn’t resist getting a few samples in. Which Sport Can I Play? By Tim Randall

PLAYERS NEEDED FOR HAVANT CHARITY FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

DUNHAM BUSH FOOTBALL CLUB, Havant Sunday League Dunham Bush Football Club of the Havant Sunday Football League will be hosting a 6-aside football tournament on Saturday 18th May in order to raise money for The Rowans Hospice. The tournament will take place throughout the day (8am - 5:30pm) at the Havant Rugby Club in Hooks Lane, with all profits donated to The Rowans Hospice. Tournament organisers are now seeking teams, players, referees and further raffle prizes.

Up to 40 teams will be playing each other twice. Each game will be of 15 minutes duration and the Top 4 teams in each league will play in a knock out competition for the Cup which has kindly been sponsored by Postcode Publications. Trophies and medals will be awarded to winners runners-up and third place in both cup and plate competitions.

The tournament starts at 8.30am and will run through to approximately 5pm.

Then comes the moment: ‘Mummy can I go to hockey with my best friend. She goes and says I should go with her. Can I Mummy, please?’ Mummy thinks. ‘Is hockey the right sport for her? Perhaps she should go to tennis. We know that and she would be more suited to that.’

How would you respond?

Firstly, don’t panic. There are three distinct phases of participation in sport from early childhood to late adolescence; namely, the sampling years (up to age 10), the specialising years (11-13) and the investment years (over 13 years).

Parental influence on children’s involvement in sport is important and changes as children age. It should comfort parents to know that, in the sampling years, all-round sport participation is more important than specialisation in one sport.

Hayling Island Sailing Club, situated at Sandy Point, is holding an Open Day on May Day Bank Holiday, Monday 6 May, starting at 10 am. Club Commodore Chris Gordon said “Any of your readers interested in finding out more about the Club is most welcome to visit.”

HISC offers sailing, shore and social facilities, a modern clubhouse and sandy beaches, all overlooking Chichester Harbour. Activities include dinghy racing, social sailing, cruising, windsurfing, child and youth sailing, training and instruction.

The Open Day will show-case what the Club has to offer for sailors and would-be sailors. It’s an action-packed family day with fun activities for children, go afloat for a trial sail, or in one of the Club’s motor launches and there will be entertainment in the afternoon.

Under Sixteen Team

Since the 2012 Olympics, a great importance has been placed on youth sport with the government encouraging sports clubs to get youngsters involved.

This has never been a problem for Havant Rugby Club.

The club has a thriving junior and mini section for both boys and girls with ages ranging from under 6’s to academy level.

The early ages focus on ball handling and enjoying the experience. The mini section

continue until the under 12’s, after which they progress to playing full-sided games.

The junior section has enjoyed success this season with three teams winning Hampshire Cup tournaments. The under 14’s have also won silverware this year.

Despite the on-field success, the club maintains it’s policy of ‘Rugby for all’.

During an interview with Chair of the Junior/Mini section, Sally Rumbles, she highlighted this philosophy and the

importance of the openness of the youth programme, saying ‘we encourage everybody, regardless of ability’. This helps to make Havant’s youth programme one of the biggest in Hampshire.

It is not just the on-field experience which is focused on, making friends off the field is also highly valued and the club does all it can to ensure that players get the most they can out of playing rugby. This can be through success on the field, or the friends they make off it - a community rugby club with a community spirit.

Warblington School Netball By Lucy Bailey,Year 11

On Friday 22 March 2013, thirty students from Warblington School travelled to Swindon by minibus to take part in their third annual Netball Tour at PGL Liddington. The School entered four teams, one for the Year 8 League, one for the Year 9 and two for the Year 10/11 Mixed League.

We had many wins on this trip, with the Year 10/11 Mixed Team just coming short of the semi-finals and with one Year 11 Team managing to reach the semi-finals, finishing in third place.

On the first morning of the three day weekend, we woke up to a heavy snow fall,.

After running through the snow, having snowball fights and taking fun group photos, we all got on our harnesses and helmets to go on the giant swing. As we whirled through the snow, just hanging from a metal bar and a cable, we received

the message that afternoon netball was back on. We all ran up to the rooms to get changed into our netball kits and raced down to the courts. As the second day came to a close, and we knew our positions, we all jumped onto the minibus to come home, tired, but happy. Hawks Lee Bradbury Completes the 2013 Virgin London Marathon Havant and Waterlooville FC Manager Lee Bradbury successfully completed the London Marathon on Sunday 21 April covering the 26 mile course in 5 hours 9 minutes. Lee told us “It was a very enjoyable day; hard, but a day I’ll remember for the rest of my life. There was great support from the crowds all round the course. I’d love to it again.”

Lee joined forces on the run with colleague Tony Male (Touchline Tony) and together they raised some £4000 for the Charity ‘Get Kids Going’, supporting British disability sport, with Lord Coe KBE OBE is its President. The Charity gives children with disabilities the chance to participate in

sport, some at the highest levels.

The Hawks final BSS league match of the season was at Westleigh Park on Saturday 27 April against Borehamwood.

Before the game Lee told us that “We’ve got a good set of players here and I’m looking forward to next season’.

After the game against Borehamwood the Hawks players were at the Club in the evening with supporters for the end of

season presentation awards in The Westleigh private bar. After the presentation Girls B Aloud tribute act performed until late in the evening.

At the time of going to press, the Hawks Academy team was hoping to cap their season by collecting some silverware against Aldershot Town in the Hampshire Floodlit Cup Final at Westleigh Park on Monday evening 29 April. Lee told us “We have a very good Academy team. They play in the highest league open to them.

Academy players are brought into the first team squad on merit and we currently have some very good young players at the Club”

New Sports Development at Warblington School Warblington School are about to embark on a £4.5 million sports development project following the sale of land at the end of the school field. The development will include a floodlit synthetic turf pitch suitable for both football and hockey. This is due for completion by September 2013. The old sports hall will be replaced with a new facility and a new multi-use games area will be provided, both of which are due for completion by June 2014.

The school have been busy working with County Architects to design these new facilities and local residents attended an open evening in January, whereby governors and members of HCC’s Planning Department were on hand to discuss the plans in more detail.

Tim Randall, Sport Scientist Tim is a sport scientist and will write on current sport issues and participation within our postcode areas. Born in Emsworth Tim is an enthusiastic sportsman. As a youngster Tim had an all round experience of several sports.

Notably he played football in his early years for Havant Rovers but as a teenager made sailing his main sport and went on to win two national sailing championships and compete at international sailing Regattas around the world.

Between the years 2000 - 2004 Tim was seconded to Brighton University by his employer - The Civil Service Motoring Association - to undertake post graduate

research into developing people with talent in sport. Since completing that assignment Tim has continued his research independently using the empirical scientific methods learned at Brighton University.

Tim said to the postcode team "I am looking forward to contributing to postcode publications. It will be challenging and interesting. I would like to focus on sports teams, clubs, schools, individuals and sporting families and the issues that affect their enjoyment, successes and opportunities as they try to get the most from their various teams, clubs, performances and individual participation."

BUMPER YEAR FOR ARTS TRAIL Well over 80 artists and makers are flinging open their doors on the weekends of 11/12 May (on Hayling) and 18/19 May (in Havant, Waterlooville and environs) to welcome the public to see their paintings and ceramics, Marion Rumfit jewellery and textiles, sculpture and superb photography. On March 15th the aisles of the Co-Op on Hayling rang to the sounds of ukuleles and singing.

The Hayling Huggers were playing to raise funds for Comic relief and in just over an hour raised in excess of £200. Many of the customers could be seen jiggling around and singing along with the group.

Thanks must be given to the friendliness of the staff at the store.

HAVANT ART COLLEGE EXHIBITION AT LANGSTONE TECHNOLOGY PARK

My ‘Green’ project focuses on the phrase ‘Make Do and Mend’ and self sufficiency. Looking at people using traditional methods as well as a D.I.Y ethic to preserve materials and promote a greener way of living. My work is looking at the characters of these people and these ways of life, resulting in figurative and collaged illustrations to shed light on the skills that can be used and the benefits of these skills and qualities. The age is gone where most people are self sufficient, technology and the speed of the modern world has taken its place. But is this for the better or worse?

My ‘green’ project focuses on the human ability to create and recycle waste.

The whole project for me was sparked by the phrase “one man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure”, so I looked into how the homeless use recycling daily and how the average homed person does not. I have tried my hardest throughout this project to recycle everything that I have used, with the exception of art materials, printer ink, paper and a wad of sticky-tape.

This piece for me reflects all the things we do not think about when it comes to the world around us, the energy we waste through our actions and the affect that it has on the whole planet.

My response to the ‘Green’ theme focuses on upcycling materials and found objects that would otherwise be considered waste and making them useable. More specifically, I am specialising in furniture design as furniture is something that we use constantly; through challenging peoples’ perceptions of unimaginative environmentally conscious designs, I hope to encourage people to think twice about what they throw away and turn their ‘rubbish’ into home furnishings. I aim to show that everyone can contribute to lessening their environmental impact; even those who cannot or choose not to actively get involved can reduce their level of waste in the comfort of their own homes through their furniture.

The Effects of The Environment on Our Moods With this project I wanted to show how the environment around us had an extreme effect on our moods. I have witnessed this in and around city centres, people seemed to be absorbed in their technology and they seem to look rather miserable but when you venture to the country side and the great outdoors everyone seems to be a lot happier. I think this is something we all need to realise and take into account. It’s good to take a break from our day to day stress and relax a little.

In the ‘Green’ project I created a thought provoking sculptural fashion garment, which I hope will inspire people to think twice about what they throw away and ways in which they can recycle, reduce and reuse.

To achieve this I used materials that I throw away on a daily basis like aluminium cans, drink bottles and plastic carrier bags, the reason I chose these materials is because of the frequent usage in a lot of people’s lives.

“How to make” with This edition, Joy shows us…How to make “My Little Phone-y”…a phone case, designed by you.

Step 1 You will need: • 2 pieces of main fabric approx 18cm x 11cm (see instruction re size of phone) • 2 pieces of lining fabric same size.

• 2 pieces of thick interlining • Bondaweb • Matching thread • Sewing machine

STEP 1

Step 2 Iron the bondaweb to one side of the interlining and don’t forget to use parchment paper on top to prevent any excess sticking to your iron. Then place the interfacing, bondaweb side to the wrong side of the fabric placing it so you can see all the seam allowances. Iron the interfacing from the fabric side as the heat from the iron will not go through the interlining very well.

STEP 2

Step 3 If you want to decorate or attach ribbon to your cover now is the time to do it before you put it together. I have used freemotion sewing and attached pieces of ric rac to one of my covers to make it unique. I think it works well with the batik fabric I used.

Step 4 To assemble, stitch up one long side of your cover with a 1cm seam Turn down the top edge of the cover by 0.5cm and stitch Turn down the hem again by 1cm and top stitch. You can do a fancy stitch here if you have one on your machine and use a contrasting thread.

With right sides together, stitch along the bottom and up the remaining long side with a 1cm seam.

Trim seams and clip corners Turn right side out and push out corners.

Step 5 Make up the lining in the same way without the interlining. Do not turn it through then put the lining inside the cover and hand stitch the top edge to attach the lining. Hand stitching is the easiest way as the edge of the phone cover is quite small and it would be tricky to get a neat finish.

In the current economic times, voluntary run clubs like Hayling United FC under 18s can struggle to gain much needed donations and sponsorship.

Brandon Parker, the team manager says that over the last few seasons it has become more and more difficult.

“A few weeks ago I decided to visit The Meridian Centre after work to ask if any businesses would be interested in sponsoring us. I was looking to get the 28 players in the youth squad matching warm up t-shirts so we can start looking more of a team on match days.

I went into Bodyworks Hair and Beauty Clinic and spoke to Paula: the salon owner.

After a short conversation she agreed to sponsor us and support a worthy cause.”

Turning up to a game in matching kit can make a big difference to the confidence of a team. Encouraging youths to spend their leisure time playing team sports is a huge positive for the community and Brandon has done a good job motivating his squad.

After finding another local business to print and supply the clothing, the design was chosen and a deal agreed. Within a few weeks Hayling United under 18s received the crested warm up shirts and

decided to drop into Bodyworks to show them off.

Paula says “Brandon was so enthusiastic when he spoke about the team that I really wanted to help. The shirts look great and I hope the lads will feel every bit the professional team when heading to a match.”

New shops coming to Leigh Park

A large store is undergoing a transformation as part of the regeneration of the Leigh Park precinct. The old Netto store in Park Parade is being split into five smaller units with the aim of attracting new businesses to offer local shoppers more choice. The plan is to have each of these shops open by the end of August. In the last few years Park Parade has seen a number of new independent businesses start trading and this growth is set to continue. The biggest factor of any business’ survival is the continuing support of the local community.

Greywell Shopping Centre is also set to undergo a major refurbishment following the recent sale of the centre.

The Barclays Team from Emsworth came to CHAOS to help us tidy up and plant in our very large garden.

It was a cold and blustery day, so part of the Barclays Team assisted in painting projects indoors.

In addition, we welcomed Havant Fire Service (and engine) to attend and our Young People were thrilled to meet the team and explore how the engine works.

We were really both very grateful and excited to have all this community spirit come and help our new and innovative project. The Chaos ‘Chill out Club’ and ‘Club 19-40’ made everyone a lovely breakfast and coffee and cake.

My name is Natalie March from Physio-logical, a chartered physiotherapist in PO9. It is great to see the gym where I work really busy at the moment and also to see lots of people out walking, cycling and running.

I hope you found the advice about tennis elbow and exercises useful in the last issue of PO9. I see a lot of people with calf strains in my clinic; runners, ramblers, football, rugby and tennis players, skiers, those with physical jobs plus many more suffer from this problem. Most people with this problem have pain when pushing off walking or running, pushing up onto their toes, walking up stairs.

The calf has two main muscles: the gastrocnemius, the large muscle closest to the surface, and the soleus the deeper muscle which sits behind the gastrocnemius. A calf strain is a tear in the muscle at the back of your lower leg. Both of these muscles join onto your Achilles tendon which then attaches to the back of the heel. |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| I am going to give you exercises which will help with calf strains.

Gastrocnemius Stretch The gastrocnemius stretch is good for lengthening the tight calf muscle (closer to the surface).

Both toes pointing forwards, bend front knee, keep back leg straight and back heel down.

You should feel the stretch in lower back of leg, below the knee.

Hold 30 seconds repeat 2 times, 3 times a day.

Soleus Stretch The soleus stretch is good for lengthening the tight calf muscle (deeper muscle) Both toes pointing forwards; bend both knees, keep heels on the floor.

Take most of your weight in back leg.

You should feel the stretch in lower back of leg, just above the ankle.

Hold 30 seconds repeat 2 times, 3 times a day.

Keep your feet shoulder width apart and facing forwards Push up onto your toes, raising your heels as far as possible and comfortable without pain.

Davies Pharmacy, which has been operating as an independent pharmacy in Havant for hundred and fifty years has recently changed hands. The new owners, Keith Seston a local pharmacist, and his wife Anu, are delighted to continue offering independent, family owned pharmacy services in Havant. Keith has been running Parade Pharmacy in Leigh Park since 1986.

“My objective is to create a Community Pharmacy in Havant offering advice and excellent service in a pleasant environment.” Keith says. “The building is in an urgent need of repair and our intention is to refurbish the pharmacy so that we can improve the services available to all customers, especially the disabled who suffer restricted access at present.”

There will be some extensive renovations to the property in the coming months but the new owner is keen to retain the building’s unique character. The front of the building is very attractive and we intend to maintain the appearance although significant and costly repairs will be required. Perfumes and skincare products will continue to be part of the pharmacy's range. The pharmacy will remain open throughout the building work and prescriptions will be dispensed as usual.

Once the building work is completed there will be a wider variety of healthcare services available at Davies Pharmacy. “We are creating a place where people can come in and receive personal health advice.

We can offer much more than just dispense prescriptions” says Anu.

HEALTH & WELL-BEING March was Ovarian Cancer Awareness month so we want to share some information about a disease that 125 women are diagnosed with each week in the UK. Twice as many women survive ovarian cancer compared to 30 years ago, but there is still much to be done. Survival rates in the UK for ovarian cancer are amongst the lowest in Europe for three main reasons according to a new study: the length of time it takes for women to first visit their GP; how quickly the condition is diagnosed and what services are available for their subsequent treatment.

Early diagnosis is key The sooner ovarian cancer is diagnosed, the easier it is to treat. Early diagnosis means that seven out of ten women will survive for five or more years.

But for GPs to be able to spot a possible case of ovarian cancer, women need to learn to recognise the symptoms and see their doctor as soon as they have concerns.

Symptoms awareness currently provides the best safety net for women and early diagnosis often leads to the best outcomes.

Delays to diagnosis But according to the charity Target Ovarian Cancer, lives are being cut short because of delays in diagnoses. Some delays are contributed to a lack of symptom awareness of ovarian cancer and women not coming forward when they have concerns.

The traditional British ‘stiff upper lip’ appears to be significant factor preventing people from seeing their doctor. According to a new landmark report published last month, a high proportion of people said that embarrassment and not wanting to waste the doctor’s time might stop them investigating a symptom that might be serious. The UK stood out against all other countries in this poll and show that cultural factors may explain some of the differences in cancer survival between the UK and other high-income countries. This suggests that around 500 ovarian cancer deaths a year could be avoided in Britain if our survival record matched that of the rest of

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Europe. It also suggests that British women must be encouraged to be confident enough to pursue any concerns with their health.

Misdiagnosis is also common because symptoms are similar to those of other conditions, meaning it can be difficult to recognise until the disease is more advanced. 30% of women are misdiagnosed as having irritable bowel syndrome; 15% with ovarian cysts and 13% with urinary infection.

These delays mean that 75% of women are diagnosed once the cancer has spread when it becomes so much harder to treat and survival rates are less favourable.

Know the warning signs Being attuned to the warning signs of ovarian cancers helps detect the disease in its early stages, when treatment is more successful. Any bleeding after menopause, no matter how small, is not normal. Other symptoms may include feelings of bloating; swelling, pressure or pain in the abdomen; constipation or urinary problems; and fatigue. As these symptoms are often associated with other conditions, it can be difficult to diagnose. But if these warning signs occur often and persistently, they can be suggestive of ovarian cancer. The disease usually occurs in women who have gone through ‘the change of life’ or menopause so most cases occur over the age of 50. However, younger women can also get ovarian cancer.

Screening for ovarian cancer At the moment, there is no screening test reliable enough to look for ovarian cancer in the general population and cervical screening tests (smear tests) do not help to detect the disease. But, if you are considered to be higher than average risk for ovarian cancer you may be able to have specific screening tests. These are not yet available to everyone as researchers are still following the progress of this cancer screening trial. But if you think you may be at high risk of ovarian cancer, visit your GP or gynaecological oncologist to discuss your concerns.

Do something about it

If you notice any unusual or persistent changes in your body, see your doctor right away. You have nothing to lose and may have everything to gain. If it is something serious, finding it early and beginning treatment quickly offers a far better chance of beating the disease. Cancer treatments are more successful the earlier the disease is diagnosed.

See the right doctor More than 60% of women diagnosed with gynaecological cancers are not treated by the correct doctor. Gynaecological oncologists are highly specialised to care for women with reproductive cancers using the newest and most effective treatments, resulting in significantly higher cure rates.

Know your family health history If your family has a history of cancer, it can increase your risk of developing ovarian cancer. Inform your doctor so you can determine which types of screening tests or self-examinations you should be doing and how often.

Change your behaviour Research tells us that up to one third of cancers are preventable through healthy life-style choices, including healthy eating, physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight. Obesity and smoking are known risk factors for ovarian cancer.

Gynaecological oncologist Mr Dirk Brinkmann says “Survival rates continue to improve as women become more aware of signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer. This leads to earlier diagnoses, when the overall survival rates are better”. Cancer Research UK says earlier diagnosis, specialisation of surgery and chemotherapy and other treatments are bringing significant improvements. These welcome developments means that cancer patients are living longer and living well.
