Havant Academy is nearing the end of its £10m refurbishment programme. Already, the site has been transformed with theatre, science and master class facilities. A giant glass atrium with footbridge now links two major teaching areas. The atrium comprises a large reception and a modern dining area with top class food created by award winning chef, Nick Ilot.

Sheila Hancock opened the new theatre last summer and was well received by all students. The Academy also has an innovative information and Isaac Newton said: resources centre called The Hive. ...contd In my opinion leadership is about being responsible and being able to lead from the front. Here at Havant Academy we have staff leaders and student leaders. All of them bring a quality to our lives. It is this which helps prepare all of us for the future. When students leave The Academy they now do so with ambition having been prepared well by Academy staff.

Work continues at a pace. For all of us the future is exciting and Havant Academy gives you the best start possible. The Academy already has a reputation for looking ahead and putting itself at the front of 21st Century learning. We are preparing for the Grand Opening on the 6th December this year!!

There have been two major occasions already, the first being the opening of new science facilities on 14th September. This was carried out by the Mayor of Havant Councillor Gerald Shimbart. The outstanding facilities reflect and promote 21st Century technology and learning.

The Academy’s Open Evening on 26th September welcomed prospective parents for the September 2013 intake. On this occasion staff and students opened up every learning area and demonstrated work to parents. This included a French Café, practical science, sport and performing arts. A special presentation was made by The Principal, Julie Taylor, Jordan Sword, Student Vice-Principal and I as Student Principal.

Havant Academy puts a huge emphasis on student leadership. This prepares its young people for the future and whatever careers they may have. The Student Academy Leadership Team (SALT) addresses student issues and bridges the gap with staff. In this way students are able to put clear and concise messages across concerning student amenities, curriculum and well-being. SALT is in its 2nd year and in terms of student leadership is second to none in any school. I am proud to lead this remarkable team as we make big plans for the near and distant future.

The Youth Council strives to give all young people a voice in their community and to make a real difference. Havant Borough Council recognizes the importance and benefit of listening to Children and Young people to change, improve and introduce new services.

The youth council are currently fortunate to be administering a small community grant that they would like to allocate to small ‘young person focused’ community groups/not for profit organisations. Individuals may not apply. Applicants are encouraged to apply for up to £250. If you feel your group or organisation would benefit from receiving this community grant you are asked to write a letter that answers the following questions. ∑ Name of organisation/community group? ∑ Where are you located? ∑ Tell us about your group/organisation and how you support young people? ∑ Tell us how this grant will benefit the young people that attend your group/organisation? ∑ Name, address, email, phone of main contact and to whom a cheque is payable.

Fitness club allows members to eat cake énergie fitness for women, Havant’s ladies-only fitness club, is hosting a charity coffee morning on Tuesday 30 October. Taking place between 9.30am and 11.30am at the club in Havant town centre, all money raised will go to The British Heart Foundation.

The event is open to members and non-members, and for once the club is advocating ladies eat cake. But only as a one off and because it’s for charity.

Angie Rose, Club Manager commented: “Our ladies love a natter and we love helping good causes. So we thought we’d combine the two, and allow them a treat at the same time.We should all have treats – in moderation.”

Q&A In a divorce – is everything divided equally?

When couples separate and go through divorce proceedings it is sensible to sort the finances as well. But where do you start? There are a number of orders that the court can make either by agreement or as part of court proceedings to put in place a financial settlement.

BEANIE HATS FOR AFGHANISTAN TROOPS

A 16-strong knitting group who meet at Havant Library every Thursday have been busy using up their spare wool to make beanie hats for the local soldiers from Thorney Island's 12 Regiment of the Royal Artillery.

This is the second time the group have knitted for the soldiers, the first time there were over 100 in total and now they've been just as busy with 133 being handed over.

“We love supporting our troops especially as many of our members have military connections,” said one member. The ladies slip a little poem into each hat for the soldiers; this was composed by Jackie, the daughter of one of the members Cathy Wade.

Creative Quarter Denise Bennett Denise Bennett, local poet and creative writing tutor, has recently had her first full length poetry collection, Planting The Snow Queen published by Oversteps Books.

Denise has taught creative writing for twenty two years for Portsmouth College and runs writing workshops in community settings including the new Havant U3A. She is secretary of Portsmouth Poetry Society and a regular reader at Tongues and Grooves music and poetry club which happens at The Florence on the last Sunday of the month, and at Wordsouth an open mike poetry event which is held at The Spring Art Centre, Havant on the second Wednesday of each month. Her work is widely published in poetry journals and placed in national competitions; most recently she was awarded runner up in the Manchester Cathedral national poetry competition. She was also one of the co-editors of This Island City - Portsmouth In Poetry anthology in which many of her poems about the city which she cares deeply about, appear. One of these poems Journey, also in the new anthology, describes the life of the three nails which fashioned into the Coventry Cross.

The inspiration for this poem came after seeing the Coventry Cross, which was retrieved from the ocean, exhibited in the Naval Museum, Portsmouth. blown apart by German bombs in 1940 - three relics, rescued from the rubble, fashioned into a cross, given to HMS Coventry, sunk in San Carlos water Her work has also been widely accepted by magazines and in 2004 she was awarded the Hamish Canham poetry prize by The Poetry Society (London). She also has a pamphlet collection, American Dresses, published by Flarestack.

Denise fell in love with words at an early age and has written ever since because, as she says, it helps her make sense of the world. The poems in her new anthology, Planting The Snow Queen are concerned with local history, the consequences of war and how it affects the lives of not only those involved but those waiting at home. Her book includes poems written in response to the well know writers, Thomas Hardy and Edward Thomas and there is also a poignant section which follows the life of her mother from a young girl to old age as a war widow.

One of the poems in her book entitled What The Good People Of Alverstoke did in 1791, a villanelle, describes the ill treatment of children in this parish who were sold as cotton slaves to Manchester mill owners. This poem charts the life of a six year old lad called George Pink.

Thinking about the money they could save they sent children to a Manchester mill, George Pink aged six was sold as a cotton slave.

In complete contrast another poem, Retrieving My Umbrella from Hardy's House, refers to how she felt when, after visiting Thomas Hardy's house, Max Gate whilst on holiday in Dorset, she discovered that she has left her umbrella behind. When she knocked on the door to retrieve her umbrella, she imagined what she would say if Thomas Hardy opened the door to her. In the novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles, the central character, Tess is hanged.

Denise knew he would plead with Hardy for her life.

Next day I go back. Hovering in the porch, I half expect Hardy to answer the door, invite me in for tea.., to plead for a reprieve for Tess...

In the sequence about her mother, again emotions are stirred in the poem The Way You Look Tonight which describes how she was widowed with her son of eight weeks after her husband's ship Frigate Tweed was torpedoed.

A time of when he wrote love letters on thin white paper.

Works by Local Author Gunvor Johansson Local author Gunvor Johansson has published two children’s ebooks. The books are under-water fantasies, but also carry a message about the importance of saving our oceans from pollution.

She has used Hayling Island’s pebbled beach and Emsworth’s shoreline as settings for her books.

The Water People’s Secret When Alice finds a tiny girl half-human, half-fish, trapped in a shell, she helps her back into the sea. Alice is invited to visit the girl’s magical water world and it takes her breath away when she is transformed into a tiny Water Girl.

She spends time in Zina’s wonderful and yet sometimes weird world, with its sparkling coral and fish. The friendly Water People welcome her and she meets Zina’s father King Merl.

The Water People have a secret which they are desperate to keep, without it they would be helpless in their quest to save the seas from pollution and destruction. But all is not well, the evil Dark Sea People lurk in the dark depths of their world, and they will do anything to capture the secret.

Alice has befriended a tiny girl, half-human, half-fish, who comes from the Water People’s colourful world, where Alice and the girl; Princess Zina have many exciting underwater adventures.

When the Water Girl, Princess Zina, leaves her world under the sea and comes ashore as a human she is on a mission; to save her oceans from danger and pollution caused by humans. She also wants to learn about life on land. The adventures are about to begin.

Zina finds that being a human is not easy and she has got much to learn. She is mad about clothes and gets them by using magic. But when she copies a designer dress, she is in serious trouble.

When they first met many moons ago, Zina gave Alice a pearl, which will grant her wishes.

Alice must not make a wish, when there is a full moon, unless she really wants it. It is hard for Alice to remember the cycle of the moon, with the result that she gives Simba, her cat, an unforgettable experience.

Alice is invited by the Water People to take part in a dolphin race, but their enemy, the evil Dark Sea People, lurks in the sea where it is much deeper and darker. Their quest to find the Water People’s secret has failed, because of her, and now they seek revenge. WRITE ON! Write-On! is a creative writing club for 11-14 year olds which runs on the third Tuesday of every month (except August) from 6-7.30pm at Bedhampton Social Club. Ray Cluley, an English lecturer at South Downs College, takes the sessions organised by Lucy Meredith (another English lecturer at SDC). Ray has a great deal of experience in teaching Creative Writing on the A level English programme at SDC, the creative writing enrichment classes at SDC and is also a published writer of short stories.

The Club was set up in September 2010; originally operating out of The Spring in Havant, because there did not seem to be anything for young writers to go to where they could meet others who shared their interest and have some fun exploring creative and imaginative ideas. The Club holds a yearly short story writing competition. The fabulous 2011 winning entry, The Blind Violinist, was subsequently entered into a national competition for stories about Sherlock Holmes and has been published in an anthology raising money to buy Arthur Conan Doyle's House. It is not unusual to find local artist Nicole Spencer ambling around with her dogs at Staunton Country Park, or watching the world go by as she enjoys a cup of coffee in Caffe Nero; sketchpad in hand. Her passion for drawing combines her love of animals and beautiful scenery to produce artwork that captivates character and portrays accuracy without photo realism. Her talents, however, are not restricted to wildlife and landscapes; she can draw anything, any subject including people, with spectacular results and is happy to take commissions. Dynamo Youth Theatre sings for Volunteer Presentations Seven members of Dynamo Youth Theatre performed songs at the Havant Volunteer Centre Volunteer Certificate Presentation, hosted by The Mayor and Mayoress of Havant, held at The Public Service Plaza on 6th August.

Prior to the presentation of Certificates, the young people aged 16 – 18 sang 4 songs which were enthusiastically applauded by the audience. Janet Duggan,Volunteer Centre Co-ordinator, said “They performed brilliantly and the choice of songs was perfect for the occasion. We have received lots of positive feedback from the volunteers who attended the event”.

Dynamo is now starting rehearsals for their Christmas show, “One Pride, One People” which will be performed at The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre from Tues 9th to Saturday 12th January 2013.

Jubilee Tree and Time Capsule By: Ron Tate Bidbury Mead Friends and Bidbury Junior School have got together to celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee. They plan to plant a semi-mature English Oak at Bidbury Mead and to bury a time capsule beneath it.

The idea was the subject of consultation over the summer when over 80% of those responding supported the idea and the preferred location on the edge of the cricket pitch.

The elected Young School Governors will be responsible for talking to their classmates to decide on what might be put into the capsule and before it is sealed there will be a chance to see an exhibition of the material.

Head Teacher Julie Wood said “This is a wonderful opportunity in such a memorable year for the pupils to take part in and create a piece of significant local history.

I am sure they will be talking to their friends and families about what they think should be recorded in 2012. I am looking forward to seeing what ideas emerge.”

Jenny Wride, Chair of Bidbury Mead Friends, said “Planting a tree to celebrate the Jubilee seemed an obvious way to provide another environmental improvement to Bidbury Mead as part of the overall strategy for further enhancements at the park. THE ROWANS HOSPICE AT HOME WILL CONTINUE The Rowans Hospice unanimously voted to continue with the Hospice at Home service once the pilot service concludes next June.

Ian Young, Honorary Chairman of Trustees, said: “I am delighted to announce that The Rowans Hospice at Home service will continue and that the Board was unanimous in its decision. We recognised that the pilot service has cared for more than 300 patients in 12 months and it is on the back of this success we have the confidence to take this bold decision. The community has never let us down and we cannot let them down; we have a moral obligation to help the people we care for. Although we still need to achieve the £1 million target, and we will need to raise an additional £500,000 per year to maintain the service into the future, we could not have reached any other decision.”

Erika Lipscombe, Matron of The Rowans Hospice, said: “We have witnessed firsthand the benefits to patients, carers and families of the Hospice at Home service and all the team feel very privileged to be a part of the provision of hospice care in people’s own homes. We are so grateful to the community who have funded the service to support people in Portsmouth and South East Hampshire who wish to die at home.”

Carolyn Leaves, whose husband Garey was cared for by The Rowans Hospice at Home team, said: "I was absolutely delighted to discover that Hospice at Home will now be offered as a permanent service by The Rowans Hospice. The care and devotion shown by the nurses during my husband’s short illness was a great comfort at a very difficult time. My husband, Garey, was able to spend his final days at home, surrounded by his family, which would not have been possible without this worthy charity."

ON THE BACK ROAD TO CHICHESTER I have travelled many a time on the B2146 to Chichester and have passed the Fox & Hounds in Funtington but never visited this village pub/restaurant - one weekday evening recently I stepped inside and to my amazement the place was buzzing (a good sign of quality food I always think!) - a cosy bar area links to a beamed well-proportioned restaurant area - also there is a Georgian "Common Room" upstairs for private functions - this recently refurbished room was used by servicemen from RAF Funtington in WWII for tea dances.

Enthusiastic waitress staff greeted us and we ordered our food from a very comprehensive menu with 8 starters and 11 main courses plus "chef specials" by Oz plus light salads and sandwiches. Whilst waiting I witnessed a plate of fish and hand cut chips pass by - it looked great sat on greasproof pseudo newspaper - a nice traditional touch.

My partner ordered squid on a Greek salad and I had whitebait as a starter - both delicious. For the main course I had Belly of Pork on cabbage and mustard mash and my partner had grilled sole on a bed of green beans and new potatoes.

A comprehensive range of sweets are available - I went for my favourite crème brûlée and my partner, the sorbet - "out of this world".

Coffee and homemade chocolates completed a really superb supper.

Additional Grill menu and Gluten free and vegetarian options are available and there is a speciality carvery served every Sunday.

This is a vibrant village pub with fantastic food and I recommend you pay the Fox & Hounds a visit - it is only about 5 miles from Havant centre and hosts Louise and Oz should be congratulated for the ambience they have created here. No parking problems either - there is a large car park opposite but it may be advisable to book a table in advance.

The well-used seats in our theatre space have become a bit old and tired. We are asking our supporters to make a contribution to their refurbishment costs. Our resident photographer, Aaron Bennett has created a wonderful piece of art, through using twenty 12 million pixel portraits and stitching them together- ‘Seated in Style’ is up on the wall in the Sadler Gallery. This image features several actual staff and customers at The Spring, volunteers, Director, Amanda O’Reilly and her dogs and even includes Aaron himself holding a camera.

Rowlands Castle Jubilee Celebrations Encapsulated in Photo Book Following the celebrations of the Diamond Jubilee in Rowlands Castle, the Rowlands Castle Jubilee Celebrations Committee, decided to put together a photo book to encapsulate all of the celebrations held within the Parish of Rowlands Castle. Photographs were contributed from many people who had enjoyed the festivities and have been put together to make a lasting keepsake. The photo book illustrates how enthusiastically everyone participated in the celebrations and the events covered range from the local school’s Jubilee Tea party to the Street Parties held in the Village and then the two days of celebrations, on 2nd and 3rd June, within the village including the Jubilee Procession, the Tea Party on the Green and the ‘Big Lunch’ on the Sunday.

These books will be on sale from the middle of October and will make brilliant Xmas presents for anyone who was there and for their friends and relatives. PO9 New Playground at St John’s, Rowlands Castle in Memory of Teacher

The memory of Deputy Headteacher Sue Miness lives on at St John’s School in Rowlands Castle, as children play on a newly erected climbing frame. Sue passed away in June 2011 after losing a hard fought battle against cancer. She was a great lover of the outdoors and wanted any donations to go towards play equipment for the school. The PTA at St John’s helped with this task and with generous contributions from Village organisations such as the RCA,

over £7000.00 was raised for the equipment.

The grand opening of the climbing frame took place at the school’s annual BBQ in September, and Jack Miness (Sue’s son) cut a ribbon, releasing balloons, in memory of Sue. Now officially open, the children of St John’s are enjoying the benefits of a new piece of equipment to play on at break and lunchtimes. A fitting way of remembering Sue.

Shore conservation work at Nore Barn Woods Friends of Nore Barn Woods are delighted that almost all the money for stage one of the shore protection work has now been raised. Thanks to the generosity of many local groups and individuals, the target of over £15,000 has been met and some preparatory work started last week. The group plans to lead on the building of an 85m long earth bank along the unprotected shore of the woods. The second stage is unlikely to be completed until next year.

Early September 2012, will see the removal of overhanging vegetation by a local contractor, Mike Reed who has donated his services for a day. The construction of a protective rammed earth bank will follow later on. Phase two will be to clad the bank in Armorloc concrete blocks to match the shoreline either side of the unprotected stretch.

An application for additional money to pay for the Armorloc blocks and labour has been made to an environmental trust.

The shore path will be closed off while the work takes place and notices about the work will be put up to warn the public. The area may look unsightly for a short time while work is going on but the final result should be a great improvement.

Mike Reed of Michael Reed Treeworks will oversee the clearing of overhanging vegetation to enable machines to get close to the bank. A team of volunteers from Lockheed Martin helped with the initial clearance work. Help is At Hand - In Touch Handyperson Service

The Handyperson Service is available to anyone over 60 or disabled and this scheme is supported by Hampshire County Council and Adult Services. In Touch provides a Handyperson Service in nine Hampshire Boroughs including Winchester, Basingstoke, Hart, Rushmoor, East Hampshire, Havant, Fareham, Gosport and Eastleigh.

We carry out small jobs and repairs normally taking up to 2 hours to complete. These include repairs to leaking taps; toilet cisterns, putting up shelves and curtain poles, fitting key safes, smoke alarms; grab rails and hand rails. We can also do some small electrical works such as changing a broken plug socket or putting up a ceiling light. We will take on those smaller jobs that you have been putting off or perhaps can no longer manage to do them yourself. If you have some flat pack furniture to assemble, need your armchair legs raised, or just a new bulb in a ceiling light then you could call us to help. What we do is more of a ‘Light Touch’ service but we can also carry out 2 person jobs if required. You may need your gutters cleared or a bed moved from one room to another. You might be thinking of having your loft insulated but you may need some help in bringing your stored belongings down from the loft.

We always carry out a free estimate and risk assessment on any of these larger types of work first. We always ask you to agree to the cost of the work beforehand. We accept cash and cheque payments paid directly to the handyperson. If we can’t help with your job we always try to point you in the right direction with another service provider.

Our labour charge is £12 per hour + VAT with an extra discount for those receiving means-tested benefits. We can also carry out a free Home Safety Check to advise you on security issues.

“Ring the Bells” Santa is coming to the Meridian Shopping Centre

Flying in on the 8th December, The Meridian Centre has again organised Santa to visit the centre over the Christmas period and will be bearing a small gift for all who come and see him, Rob Fryer the Centre Manager says, “ Last year we invited children to come along and see Santa which we felt was very successful and over 1400 children visited during his time here and each received a gift free of charge, this year to support a very worthwhile charity the Prince`s Trust we are asking for a minimal 50p charge per child with all monies raised being donated to the Trust which helps children by giving them both practical and financial support, developing key workplace skills such as confidence and motivation they work with 13 to 30-year-olds who have struggled at school, have been in care, are long-term unemployed or have been in trouble with the law.

The recent start to the redevelopment of the Gales Brewery site in Horndean had me wondering where all the artefacts were that told some of the history of the place. I did some research by asking around, getting in touch with Hampshire County Council (HCC) Museums Service and Fullers, the company that purchased Gales in 2005.

HCC sent me a lot of photographs, taken just after the Brewery closed in 2006.

Fullers do have a few historical items at their Chiswick HQ, such as an old bottling machine and several old bottles. Most interestingly, I learned that there are several displays of Gales memorabilia at the fascinating Milestones Museum in Basingstoke www.hants.gov.uk/milestones In August, local artist and photographer, Garrick Palmer, and I spent several hours inside this vast hangar-like structure, photographing these displays. The most photogenic is a 1927 Gales delivery truck now fully restored and in working condition with an MOT. It is the only known vehicle of its kind in the UK. Another principal exhibit is a working Gales pub (run by Fullers). While there, resting from our exertions, Garrick and I were caught up in a WWII sing-along at the piano with a WI group from Essex. (To recover from this surreal moment, we were obliged to partake of an excellent pub lunch at the Purefoy Arms www.thepurefoyarms.co.uk in Preston Candover on the way home.)

The Paralympics

One thing this summer certainly hasn’t been short of is sport. It’s been everywhere, from your TV, to your chocolate! Whilst some regarded the events as a nuisance, the Olympics and Paralympics have had millions captivated and I found myself as one of the fortunate few who got to experience the excitement first hand. A coach-full of students were selected by my school, to go to the final day of the Paralympics, and what can I say? Wow! The Olympic Park in itself is amazing, full-stop. There is constantly so much going on!

You are greeted by hundreds of people looking lost and confused, consulting maps (and they’re just the stewards!). The thing that strikes you before you’re even in the stadium, navigating your way through the hordes of people, is the sense of pride each person feels for their country and their athletes.

The stadium is initially just a sea of flags, each flag representing culture and diversity in its own way. The sense of pride and patriotism swells. Clambering to our seats, we join the audience in proudly brandishing our flags. The atmosphere is electric - who can blame us for being overwhelmed? After all, we’re practically on the track, our seats are so close to the front! We’ve been blessed with amazing seats to accompany the days fantastic weather, all we need now are some inspiringly determined Paralympians to complete the day.

We are not disappointed. We wait only minutes before the athletes make their entrance and the audience embrace the opportunity to reach a phenomenal volume, showing their support. It is incredible to be part of it; the noise, the echo, the Mexican wave – it is truly exhilarating!

Each event is a different kind of inspiring;You can’t watch these athletes complete such trying challenges without getting an overwhelming feeling of respect for them, having achieved so much despite they’re disabilities and other struggles in life.

My favourite part of the day isn’t the novelty of going through a military level of security or getting absorbed into the crowds. It isn’t the whole crowd standing to take part in the YMCA. It is a touching moment before the events even begin, when one of the athletes falls from his wheelchair during his warm up and nobly declines help from the stewards, but graciously accepts the help of a fellow athlete. Moments like these make me proud of the human race; Moments of equality displayed by the extraordinary. I CAN’T GO THROUGH ANOTHER CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR LIKE THIS How many times do the telephone responders on Al-Anons helpline hear this phrase in January?

Most calls the helpline gets at the New Year are from desperate families and friends who have spent what should be a happy time in a situation of worry and anxiety.

Al-Anon meetings can help with these feelings we have of desperation because of a loved one’s drinking. Most of us have been through unhappy holiday periods not knowing what to do or where to find help.

If you can relate to this situation then consider coming to an Al-Anon meeting. We have local groups who meet on a weekly basis and being part of one of these groups means you are no longer alone with your problems.

At meetings we talk about how we feel about what is going on in our lives and what we can do to make a better life for ourselves. Everyone who goes to Al-Anon meetings has been affected by someone else’s drinking, so you are amongst people who understand what you are going through and can identify with how you feel and what you say.

Al-Anon meetings are a very safe place to share our feelings as we respect each other’s anonymity and everything that is said in meeting remains confidential.

MIXED FORTUNES FOR GLANVILLES FC Members of local law firm Glanvilles took part in an inter business football tournament in Southampton on Friday 21 September 2012. The tournament, organised by Tenon, saw professional businesses such as Solicitors, Banks and Insolvency Practitioners battle it out to become tournament champions.

Glanvilles FC started badly with two defeats in a row but soon found their feet, drawing two games and winning one.

Playing for Glanvilles FC were Nick Hessey, Steven Bull, Martyn Chadderton and John Arman. They were joined by two guest players - Estate Agents Mark Roberts and Simon Meek.

The Havant Multicultural festival was opened by the Mayor of Havant who endorsed its aim to promote peace, harmony, strong and positive relationships between people from different backgrounds.

The event was a great success; “We just cannot wait for the next one,” was the sentiment echoed by many after enjoying five hours of non-stop music and beautiful weather.

CTC PORTSMOUTH

By Robert Sebley, CTC Portsmouth A Local branch of the national cyclists' organisation We are one of 250 local groups which form the national CTC organisation which has a total membership of around 60,000. CTC Portsmouth draws members from a wide area which includes Gosport, Fareham, Waterlooville and Emsworth and even has some active members living as far a field as Lee-On-Solent, Petersfield and Chichester. The local active CTC membership numbers around 200. The main activities of the club are: v Club rides 3 times per week (4 in the summer months) v Clubroom presentations and talks during the winter v Cycle tours in UK and abroad v Liaising with local councils to improve cycling infrastructure and facilities v Promoting cycling in the local community. v Publish a quarterly magazine (the Pedal).

The CTC has a long and illustrious history. The organisation has it’s origins in the early days of cycling when the bicycle opened up new horizons for independent travel and was founded in 1878 as the Bicycle Touring Club, subsequently being re-named the Cyclists' Touring Club. Since then the CTC has been involved with all aspects of cycling, including campaigning on specific issues and influencing cycle related legislation. In 1936, CTC created a first cycling proficiency scheme in response to increasing cyclists’ casualties at the time. This was adopted as a national programme run by RoSPA in 1948 and has been in use almost ever since. Today, CTC is at the forefront of cycling training being fully involved with the government’s Bikeability scheme.

CTC Portsmouth has four rides per week in the summer and three in the winter.

Sunday rides start from Cosham Library at 09.15 and cover 60 miles plus at a fairly swift pace. Wednesday and Saturday rides start from The Spring Centre, East Street, Havant at 09.15 and ride at a more leisurely pace with a coffee stop after about 15 miles. A proportion of riders return to Havant from the coffee stop so there is always someone to accompany a newcomer back to the start point if needed. Those staying with the ride and continuing to the lunch stop do a round trip of 40 to 60 miles. Each ride has a leader that has planned the route and stopping venues, all published in the magazine and web site.

Thursday evening rides start at 7.00pm from The Spring at Havant during the summer and visit a local pub after a ride of about 5 to 10 miles. In the winter there is a fortnightly talk or presentation at the Emsworth club room. We always welcome newcomers to our rides and are happy to have non-CTC members accompany us for a couple of trips. If they want to continue after that they would be expected to become a CTC member. Lunch stops are normally near cafes or pubs. A few riders, particularly in summer, take a picnic lunch. In response to some members looking for a less challenging ride, arrangements have been made for additional shorter rides on Saturday’s and Wednesday, starting at 09.30 from The Spring at Havant.

Leigh Park Christmas Grotto Leigh Park Christmas Grotto is run by a team of dedicated volunteers, and this year 2012 will be no exception. Without the kind support of the owners of Greywell Shopping Centre who every year allow us to use an empty unit at no cost, and give some funding to help purchase presents the grotto would not succeed.

The Leigh Park Christmas Grotto has been running for some ten years, with different volunteers through the years. Some of the volunteers have been involved for seven or eight years now.

The Grotto will be opening on the Friday 30th November, with children from local primary schools invited to come along and sing carols for Santa, and a “Lantern Procession” is held later on, on the opening day.

The procession will start from Park Parade and will end at Stockheath Common.

The grotto will be open through until 22nd December, we endeavour to give the children and families a magical experience on their visit to Santa.

We have been singing together now for over 4 years and meet every Tuesday evening from 7:30pm to 10:00pm in the Main Hall at Park Community School, Middle Park way, Leigh Park, Havant. Our programme through the year varies from sing-outs raising money for Charitable Causes to occasions when we raise money for Chorus Funds. West Street Havant a Century Ago

The woman behind the Faith St Faith’s Church has been a hotspot of activity in Havant since the 11th century. It is a familiar landmark within the community that is known to almost everyone. But what many people do not realise however, is the unusual story of the woman behind it. Whilst we might generally be used to the idea that the lives of the saints are full of legend, mystery and intrigue, Faith, born in Aquitaine and martyred around 300 AD under the persecution of the Roman Empire, was but a girl when faced with destiny. They say that the saints suffer, and, at the hands of a red-hot brazier, she really did. But Faith, like anyone that truly believes in something, did not falter. Her strength was unearthly; her resilience remarkable alone. Confuse her not with the other Faith, the sister of Hope and Charity, though, as she is said to sometimes assume the guise of the avenger; punishing those that give her churches insufficient donations. Havant congregation, beware.

In 1912 West Street contained many public buildings, such as the offices of the Urban District Council, which met monthly, and the Rural District Council, which met fortnightly at the Havant Union Workhouse following the meeting of the Board of Guardians. The workhouse could accommodate 200 inmates and the 1911 census lists Henry and Aurelia Ripp as the workhouse master and matron, together with 74 inmates, including 13 children. The police station, with an Inspector and five constables, was next door at 104 West Street and petty sessions were held once a fortnight at the adjacent Court House.

In 1912 St Faith's Church, then as now, was the dominant building and St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, built by George Stallard, had just extended its school to hold up to 78 children. The Wesleyan Chapel at 80a West St is now a beauty salon and the Primitive Methodist Chapel (demolished) was next to the 'Bedhampton Rail Motor Halt'.

Industry was represented by Alfred Stent and Sons, who were fellmongers, parchment manufacturers and leather dressers, and by Samuel Clarke's 'water and steam' flour mills. Some buildings from these works are still standing and at 79 and 81 West Street there are a pair of cottages with 'S.C. 1893' above a line of decorative brickwork.

The shops in West Street included the corn and seed merchants, Pullen and Rose at No.1, four of Havant's nine butchers, a cane chair mender, a china dealer, a blacksmith, the International Tea Co. Stores and Davies the chemist, still with its green mathematical tiles.

At that time the post office was housed opposite St Faith's, in 'a commodious building' designed by AE Stallard and erected in 1892, Look up and you can still see the attractive pediments. Next door you can also see the upper floors of the Capital and Counties Bank (now Lloyd's), which opened in 1884 and was designed by HR Trigg of Hayling Island.

Inevitably; in addition to the Cygnet Brewery (Biden & Co. Ltd), there were several public houses, including The Fountain, The Prince of Wales, The Cobden Arms, The Dolphin Hotel and Tap and The Black Dog (recently known as The Court House but now converted to residential accommodation).

Local author Chris Elmes has lived in Leigh Park for sixty one years. She says “We moved to Leigh Park when there were few roads and even fewer facilities and I went to school here, moving from one to the next as they were built, starting in the ex-Naval camp at Stockheath, moving on to Riders, Barncroft and Trosnant primaries and then to Havant Grammar from the age of 11.”

Later in life Chris was to return to Barncroft Infant School where she worked initially as the school secretary and later as the Administration Officer for 21 years before her retirement in 2004.

In 2008 Chris visited America for the first time and it was from this visit that the conviction that she should write an historical novel based on the places she had visited grew. This novel, The Overcoming, follows the life of Liza Simmons, who was born in 1665, the year of the Great Plague, to a mother banished from her own home. Liza went into service at the age of ten and accompanied her employer across the ocean to America. Gradually she became used to a way of life quite unlike any other she had known and her future seemed settled – until her life was overtaken by events outside her control.

As Liza tells her tale, many people connected with her life present their version of events, making this an unusual and compelling story.

Following on from the publication of The Overcoming, Chris enjoyed having the time to develop her interests in many different directions. These interests led her to form the Havant Wonder Women, now in its third year. This is a thriving group for women who wonder about all sorts of things that can very loosely be gathered under the heading of ‘spiritual’ or other-worldly, psychic, holistic and so on, and who welcome the opportunity to talk about their own interests or listen to visiting speakers in a safe, comfortable environment. The group meets on each Tuesday from 7.30 at The Dickinson Centre, Park Community School, Middle Park Way, Leigh Park and all women are welcome to come along for a visit and see if it seems something that might appeal to them.

It’s Not All Doom and Gloom for Job Hunting Youngsters By: Becky Lewis It’s a jungle out there when it comes to employment but one young lady is proving that job hunting doesn’t have to be dog eat dog, setting up her own successful PR company based in Havant, Hampshire.

25-year-old Portsmouth-born Becky Lewis, set up Pencil PR in May this year after leaving her job as a PR Account Manager in Norwich, where she had moved with her first job. But, a Portsmouth girl at heart, Becky always wanted to return to her hometown to work, but found this increasingly difficult. Ms Lewis commented: “I wanted to stay in the Portsmouth area when I left University, but sadly jobs were so scarce my only option was to move away. I stayed in Norwich for three years before trying for another job back home, but I just found that the stakes were so high in terms of competitiveness and I Becky Lewis was was disadvantaged at living so far away”.

Leigh Park dog training club offers training for all ages and abilities of dog. We meet every Wednesday night at Leigh Park community centre (main hall) from 7.30pm.

Training is offered for puppies as soon as they have completed their vaccinations and any other age of dog whether rescue or just a dog that needs a bit of extra training.

Our training methods are kind and reward based with the emphasis on learning to enjoy your dog rather than just tolerating them. We have trainers who can advise on basic training, behaviour, feeding, showing, agility, gundog work, and how to use common sense approaches which allow your dog to fit into your lifestyle.

Are you bored with your week-day meals? Still need quick and easy recipes but with a little extra kick! Here are some ideas sent in by locally based Chilli Jam Company with their secret ingredient…

Jammy Chicken: Peel and chop roughly a selection of vegetables of your choice ( eg carrot, celery sticks, quartered onions, courgettes, aubergines, fennel) add some garlic and either dried or fresh herbs, salt, pepper and 2 cups water or stock. On top of this put either 4 -6 Chicken breasts or equivalent chicken thighs; spread each chicken portion with 1 teaspoon of Chilli jam Company’s Chilli jam, cover with foil and roast in the oven until cooked through…delicious, quick and easy!

Brighten up old favourites: add a teaspoonful of Chilli Jam (or a little Chillirissa if you like it hot!) to Spaghetti Bolognese, Cottage Pie or Lasagne with a new bite!

Or for a delicious starter, lunch or snack: with a fine skewer prick several holes in a camembert or some similar cheese, spread with some Chilli Jam and bake in the oven until warmed through and serve with fresh crusty bread and a little salad, It’s a great introduction for children into the world of chilli as it is deliciously sweet and full of goodness with the Tomatoes, Peppers and Onions and Apples.

Ingredients • 225g/9oz plain flour • 2 tsp ground cinnamon • 140g/5oz chilled butter, cut into cubes • 55g/2oz ground almonds • 25g caster sugar • 1 egg, yolk only • 55g/2oz golden marzipan • 170g/6oz vegetarian mincemeat • 2 tbsp sherry • caster sugar, for sprinkling • cream, custard, or brandy butter, to serve Preparation method 1. Put the flour in a blender with the cinnamon. Add the butter and blitz to form fine breadcrumbs. Add the almonds, sugar, egg yolk and 2-3 tbsp of cold water and blitz to form a soft dough. Knead the dough briefly on a floured surface, then wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, chop the marzipan into small pieces. Stir into the mincemeat, along with the sherry.

3. Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas 5. Thinly roll out the pastry and cut out twelve 7.5cm/3in rounds. Place the rounds in a greased 12 hole tart tin. Divide the mincemeat between the pastry cases.

4. Cut out 12 stars and place one on top of each tart. Bake for 20 minutes until the pastry is golden and cooked through. Transfer to a wire rack and sprinkle with caster sugar. Serve with cream, custard or brandy butter

PO9 BEACON FOOD BANK CHRISTMAS HAMPER APPEAL Are you looking forward to Christmas? Have you sorted all your Christmas shopping? For some, at this time of year the pressure to provide for their family just becomes too much. Perhaps they have been just about coping with paying the bills and feeding the family but then Christmas comes along and the emotional strain is the tipping point.

Throughout the year we take referrals from local support agencies to give out free food hampers to families in need in the Havant Borough and we want to thank everyone who has been donating food regularly, but we would really appreciate your support as we prepare for the Christmas rush.

We do special hampers at Christmas that include a complete Christmas dinner and some goodies, as well as some of the basics. We also try to include some new toy if there are children in the family. In the past, these hampers have been received with gratitude that is hard to express, but just imagine how you would feel if it were you.

On Friday 21 December we are having a Christmas hamper packing day. It’s not much of a spectator sport but anyone is welcome to come along to talk to us about what we do. The Mayor of Havant will be joining us for a while to give us a hand and lend his support. If you want to donate some Christmas food or a toy, we would appreciate it if these could be brought in before then, so we have time to sort everything and make sure we have enough.

Two local businesses are leading the way this year in supporting Beacon Food Bank.

Pfizer, a multi-national bio-pharmaceutical company with a packaging and distribution base here in Havant, have kindly donated £1000 towards our Christmas hampers mainly to cover the purchase of fresh meat. ASDA, Havant is also donating some packing boxes and the use of their minibus to help with deliveries. This type of support is vital to cope with the ever increasing number of referrals. We would particularly welcome support from other local businesses and offices. Why not put a box in your staff rest area and collect donations of food for Beacon Food Bank?

Anyone can make a donation of food – or a financial donation if you prefer. Money is used to purchase the fresh goods.

MESSAGE OF HOPE Are you close to someone who drinks too much? If so, then there is help and hope for you.

AL-Anon Family Groups is an organisation for the relatives and friends of problem drinkers who meet together and talk about their problems in order to help and support each other.

Al-Anon has been offering hope and help for over 60 years and has around 800 groups in the U.K. and Republic of Ireland. We have one purpose – to help the families and friends of problem drinkers.

Why does Al-Anon need to do this? Having a problem drinker in our lives can be overwhelming and causes many difficulties for us. It can give us financial, relationship and health problems and can cause untold damage to our children. Most of our members have experienced these problems and it is reassuring for the newcomer to know that they are not alone in the feelings they may be experiencing. We like to believe that when we go to Al-Anon we are amongst friends and are no longer alone as everyone who attends AlAnon meetings has been affected by someone else’s drinking. We do the best we can with the knowledge we have but this does not always work. In Al-Anon we learn that we have choices and can do things differently which can help our situation Anyone can become a member and costs nothing. We have friendly local groups who meet on a weekly basis and you can be sure of a very warm welcome should you choose to come along.

Anonymity is an important principle of the Al-Anon programme, we do this by using first names only and we protect each other’s confidentiality so we can talk openly about our situation. Al-Anon meetings are a very safe place to speak about how we are feeling about what is going on in our lives.

Soft drinks will be sold on the night but feel free to bring your own alcohol and nibbles along to share with your friends. We have lots of seating areas.

The Rogue Run by: Chris Savage - Rogue Run

Last issue we ran an article on the Rogue Run, a European Driving Holiday aimed at raising much needed funding for a children’s Charity, "The Jennifer Trust". For more information about the both the run itself, and the charity, please visit the website: www.roguerun.co.uk. Essentially, it is a group of people from all walks of life and many areas of the UK, sharing a passion for some of the greatest driving roads in Europe.

The 2013 route includes watching the sun rise from French National parks, taking on the mighty Nurburgring race track, the option of a route through Zurich, or a leisurely drive through twisty German back roads, followed by some Austrian mountains, back onto the world famous Autobahns, then into Holland and back through Belgium with enough time left to spend exploring the historic city of Bruges before returning to the UK. All of this over one very long bank holiday weekend (Depart Dover Midnight May 24th, returning early evening, Monday May 27th).

The cost for this is just ÂŁ150 per head to cover costs, with ALL profits going to the charity. Take any car you want, providing it is legal, and the guys would be delighted to have you along.

Since we ran the feature in the last edition of PO9, local interest has picked up and there are now several drivers from this area alone booked in to experience Rogue Run 2013.

Stronger, More Flexible, Pain-Free People in PO9 ‌ tips and exercises from our Olympic Physio My name is Natalie March (nee Stephenson) from Physiological in PO9. I am all settled back into normal clinic times now after returning from the Olympics. It is great to see lots more people out and about running, cycling and participating in other sports and activities.

I hope you found the leg stretching exercises useful in the last issue of PO9 and they have helped to improve your muscle flexibility. A common complaint I see in my clinic is patello-femoral pain syndrome (pain at the front of the knee); runners, cyclists, people taking up new sports and activities plus many more suffer from this problem.

Most people with this problem have some pain when walking up and down stairs.

Knee pain can have many root causes, such as cartilage tears, osteoarthritis, tendon and ligament sprains. I am going to give you exercises which will help with knee pain due to muscle imbalance which then leads to poor tracking of your knee cap (Patella).

Please be aware of your body and take advice from your GP before exercising if you have any aches or pains or send me an email (enquiries@physio-logical.net) for advice and guidance.

All these exercises should be pain free.

ITB Stretch The ITB (ilio-tibial band) stretch is good for lengthening the tight muscle which runs from outer hip to outer knee which leads to muscle imbalance around the knee.

Cross one leg in front of the other one and bend that knee, keep back leg straight, drop hip of back leg to side, to increase the stretch lift the arm of straight leg up and over.

You should feel the stretch in the outer thigh/hip of the straight leg.

Hold 30 seconds, repeat 2 times, 3 times a day Squats This exercise helps strengthen the weaker inner thigh muscle to improve the muscle imbalance.

Feet hip width apart, toes pointing forwards. Squat down, sticking your bottom out like there is a chair behind you.

Always keep your knees in line with second toe, do not drop your knees in.

Hold 10 seconds, repeat 3 times 10, 2 times a day.

Single Leg Squat This is an advance knee strengthening exercise, so only try this if you are used to exercising or once your strength has improved with the squat exercise above.

Stand on one leg, do a mini squat down and up on the one leg.

Always keep your knee in line with second toe, do not drop your knee in.

Postcode Publications ArthritisFirst in PO9 Juliette O’Hea, MCSP MSc PGDip (rheum) Juliette was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis (A.S) at physiotherapy school in 1983.

Following a significant flare-up in 1991, she started specialising in rheumatology and has never looked back. Her first rheumatology post was under Dr Ian Gaywood at Princess Margaret Hospital, Swindon, as a metrologist. She then joined Dr Andrei Calin's A.S research team in Bath, developing the Bath A.S functional Index (BASFI). At Christchurch Hospital, she was fortunate to gain further experience under the watchful eye of Sue Fletcher and the excellent rheumatology team. Whilst at Christchurch, she completed a post-graduate diploma and Masters degree in advanced rheumatology practice at Bournemouth University. With this extra experience, she was able to create rheumatology practitioner posts at both Southampton and Salisbury hospitals.

Juliette has opened up National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society (NASS) exercise groups in Salisbury and Bognor and is the author of the A.S physiotherapy chapter in both the 13th and 14th editions of Tidy's physiotherapy. Aware of the interest in A.S from health professionals and to improve A.S management, she came up with the idea of starting AStretch (www.astretch,co.uk) in 2001. The AStretch committee, comprised of senior physiotherapists, meets twice yearly to discuss relevant topics and to influence AS management. AStretch runs regular courses and biennial conferences. Until recently, her physiotherapy role included being physiotherapy advisor to NASS and running courses for physiotherapists on A.S management.

Since 2008, Juliette has been running a business called ArthritisFirst that promotes exercise for people with any type of arthritis. She runs exercise classes in Emsworth, Chichester and Havant and she will also see patients on a 1:1 basis to advise on exercise.

FitBeat 2012 Bootcamps, Boxing and Blue Skies!

Finally the sun shone on FitBeat 2012 on Saturday 15 September, a day to celebrate the amazing Olympic and Paralympic summer of sport.

Organised by Innovations Fitness, FitBeat was all about encouraging local people to make exercise part of their life, have fun and raise funds for The Rowans Hospice in Waterlooville too.

Exercise for Life Juliette O’Hea, a local Chartered Physiotherapist with a special interest in rheumatology, runs exercise classes for people with arthritis in your local area. She has had arthritis since childhood which ironically was diagnosed whilst she was training at Physiotherapy school. She qualified as a physiotherapist in 1985 and acquired a Master’s degree in Rheumatology in 1994.

Her joints are now well controlled on a special injectable medication called Enbrel. These types of medication have made a big difference to her life and to so many others. There were times when she was incapable of doing any exercise let alone the 5 classes a week that she now does! At one stage she could not walk due to numerous swollen and painful joints and she remembers the angst of being pushed around in a wheel chair. Now she is able to run 5 exercise classes a week and to pursue her love of tennis, yoga and swimming.

In order to help local people who have arthritis, she set up her own business called ArthritisFirst which involves weekly exercise classes in Havant, Emsworth and Chichester. She knows from experience that the pain of arthritis can affect our everyday lives but with specially tailored exercise, pain can lessen over time and strength, mobility, posture and balance can improve, thereby improving our quality of life.

Exercise balls and bands are all incorporated into the routines to give variety and the exercises are tailored to your needs. The exercises are mainly done in sitting with a small amount of work in standing and you undertake as much or as little of the class as you can manage. There is no age limit! The exercises classes are fun and a good way to meet others with similar experiences. She offers a free taster session.

The hour-long classes take place at 9.55am and 11.05am on Tuesdays in the Lumley room at the Emsworth Community Centre and at the same time on Thursdays in St Joseph’s Church Hall, West Street, Havant. The Havant class is sponsored by Angel Radio.

She also runs a class at 10am on Wednesdays at St Pancras Church Hall, Chichester. There is plenty of parking at all the venues. The classes are term time only.

If you need extra input, she can assess and advise you on a 1:1 basis in your home.

On the 14th July 2012, Gary and Steve Mullins of ActionCoach Business Coaching based in Havant, undertook a huge challenge in aid of Charity. Gary and Steve decided to ride from London to Paris in 24 hours.

After nearly 12 months of training, Gary and Steve set off at midday from central London on the epic 280 mile ride. With the clock ticking down, they set off in the pouring rain heading for Dover to meet the ferry.

They conquered the hills coming over the South Down’s and the long winding hills of Dover to make the ferry on time. Arriving in France as dusk closed in, night riding became the call of duty and for the next 8 hours, sleep deprivation and fatigue kicked in. The biggest challenge to overcome was to stop themselves giving up!

As dawn broke it gave Gary and Steve a fresh lease of life, it gave the feeling they had broken the back of the ride. The next 6 hours was spent struggling up the climbs and enjoying the descents through the French countryside until they reached the outskirts of Paris. Riding through the heart of Paris, they took in the famous sites including cycling around the Arc de Triomphe and finally made the finish line at the base of The Eiffel Tower.

The ride took just over 24 hours, just missing their target, but they completed the amazing 280 mile ride London to Paris non-stop raising an astonishing £2500 for the UK disability charity, Scope. ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Havant bus station is a real benefit to the town with its enclosed glass fronted shelter containing a well stocked kiosk. But and Alan Wallbanks description (in the last PO9') of the smoking and litter on the 'practical' but impossible to keep clean flooring is spot on.

To add to this, Alan clearly didn't have to use the male toilets for the urine-soaked floor is the final 'whiff' of the public's cleanliness failure.
