WEST STREET ARCADE Patchwork Competition

In August 1962 a two-page spread in The Evening News told of the delights of shopping in West Street Arcade, a recently opened traffic-free area linking West Street with Elm Lane. 'The broad footway is made gay with tubs of roses and on each side there is a glass overhead canopy, the centre being open to the sun and air.

The arcade is making Havant a popular venue, unique in this part of the country and the sixties need not be a nightmare struggle to avoid the traffic.'

For the ladies there were Cadenza corsets at Foundations and zips and patterns at Woolgathering. DE Nutbeem, watchmakers and jewellers, would also string ladies' pearls. Elizabeth Ann sold Chilprufe, Aertex and Clydella babywear and at Toojays you could purchase cards and toys, including Havant’s own Scalextric and Britain's 'Swoppits'. (Knights were the most popular).

Murano and Whitefriars glass - now the stuff of TV's Bargain Hunt, was available from Heather House, or Mennards at No. 13, and Gifts Galore sold umbrellas,

handbags and travel goods. You could book a holiday at Island Travel and 'foreign,' as well as local fruit and vegetables, were supplied by Quality Fruit. The Furnishing Studio sold everything from loose covers to wallpaper and F O'Reilly, a familiar name, specialised in radios and electrical goods.

Elwoods, who sold confectionery, ices and tobacco, boasted that they could supply 'any make of fresh cigar within the hour'. Gentlemen could also patronise Style Menswear for Raelbrook shirts and 'Le Roi of Piccadilly' pyjamas; moreover, Tinworth and Reynolds, tailors, provided bespoke and ready to wear distinctive tailoring with 'two to three weeks delivery for measure orders'.

Those were the days!

French Knot Studio the creative textile supplies and haberdashery shop in East Street Havant would like to thank all of the customers that entered the ‘Patchwork Quilts for Premature Babies’ competition. Shop owner Karen Veck said ‘ we had a fantastic response of 37 entries, many of the entries were from first time quilters who were inspired to start quilting because the small size of the quilts makes them an ideal starter project'.

The winner, Mrs Copps of Bedhampton, received a French Knot Studio gift voucher for her hand quilted 'duck quilt'. A further 7 quilters were presented with vouchers to spend in the shop, books donated by craft book publisher Search Press and hand dyed fabrics kindly donated by local company The Dye Bag. The entries were judged by Averil Menzies and Gerry Craddock both of Emsworth patchwork group, Bourne Quilters.

The quilts were displayed in the shop during August and will be sent to Hampshire premature baby units after laundering. When the babies leave hospital, the quilt they have been given will stay with them.

Havant’s Swain & Co to abseil down Spinnaker Tower Brave staff members absailed down Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower to raise money for the Hampshire Autistic Society (HAS).

Jess Connelly, Sarah Langley, Melanie Lidstone Land, James Hurford, Gurvinder Singh Rathore and Vicki Wright descended at 30 minute intervals.

Not only did they raise money for a great cause, Melanie conquered her fear of heights!

Melanie goes on to say, "Ever since I was a child, I have had a fear of heights.This was so extreme that I even used to "bump down" small flights of stairs and struggled to walk up or down steep slopes! Having reached a milestone birthday recently I decided that it was time to conquer this fear.” Jess Connelly explains why the charity HAS is close to their hearts: “At Swain & Co, we represent some of the most vulnerable individuals in society and specifically, within our local area, this includes adults with Learning Disabilities and the elderly.We provide support to a number of charities in the local area, through training and advice. We have been impressed with the hard work and dedication of volunteers at HAS and have taken part in a number of their events in the last year.

A key to the quality of life for young people with Autism is independent living.We support and promote that in the case work we do but wanted to take that a step further and support that work in the community as a whole rather than just in relation to specific clients.

We may not be married, but I still have rights, don’t I? In short, no. There are very few laws that protect unmarried couples when they separate. There is no such thing as a “common-law spouse” and this can be a common misconception.

Havant Law Firm finalist in Legal Aid Oscar Swain & Co beat off an unprecedented number of entrants to become a finalist for the Legal Aid Firm of the Year Award 2012 The Legal Aid Practitioners Group (LAPG) held their annual awards in London on 12th June to celebrate the exceptional work that Legal Aid solicitors and barristers across the country carry out on a daily basis. Mike Mansfield QC, leading lawyer of the generation, headed the judging panel.The judging panel commented on the variety of the areas of law Swain & Co. cover under Legal Aid, the ‘extra mile’ they go for clients, the fact that they ‘think outside of the box’ and the ground-breaking work they carry out made the firm stand out.

Graeme Swain, Managing Partner in the firm, said, “We were runners up in the Legal Aid Firm of the Year and we are very proud that we made the final – what a fantastic result.We had a great evening, but more importantly the nomination and subsequent short-listing reflected the skill and commitment of the whole team.”

The Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen Families Association (SSAFA) help members of our forces. We are one of the oldest established charities in the UK, started out in 1885. Our local branch is based in Havant.

We give help and support to Serving, ex. Serving, men, women and their families at any age level. The kind of issues we get involved with are: House adaptation, Home Maintenance, Stair Lifts, Mobility Scooters, Holidays, Medical Needs, to name but a few.

Last year in the Havant district alone, we gave help and support to a total of 214 families: the oldest person 95 years young, and the youngest 8 years old.

Caseworkers follow up requests for help that we get at the Havant Branch, by making home visits.

Murder Mystery at Park!

Havant Literary Festival 2012 will take place on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th October at The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre, Havant.

Friday Night is Bookshelf Barney Night - organised by Wordsouth A well-known writer, reader, thinker, poet and artist each pitch the book which they think is ‘the best book ever written’. An impossible task you may say, but they will all be passionate about their choice, so come, listen and vote for the winner.

We are delighted that Mark Waldron of The News and Naomi Foyle, judge of our poetry competition, have already agreed to take part; other participants will be announced shortly.

Saturday all day will include: a writing workshop for young people run by Miriam Halahmy. Miriam will also give a talk about her own work, especially the inspiration for her two latest, thought provoking novels, ‘Hidden’ and ‘Illegal’ set on Hayling Island Michael Stewart, multi-award winning writer and lecturer, whose novel ‘King Crow’ won the 2011 Not the Booker will be running a writing workshop for young and not so young adults - a very exciting opportunity for aspiring as well as seasoned writers. His talk later in the day on his own career in writing for theatre, poetry and prose, and in particular his stunning debut novel, will interest and intrigue lovers of psychological thrillers and birds!

Graham Hurley, the very popular crime writer, will attend the Festival to share the how and why of his prodigious output, including the popular DI Joe Faraday series, set in and around Portsmouth. How will he explain the death of his amazing detective whose funeral at Portchester Crematorium opens his latest novel, Happy Days?

John Scadding will give a wonderful rendition of David Copperfield, an adaptation for solo voice by Charles Dickens.

Voula Grand, a business psychologist and début novelist, will give a talk entitled ‘Writing the psychological novel: the essential elements for success’, and discuss her compelling debut novel ‘Honor’s Shadow’: a contemporary tale of betrayal and revenge!

A Poetry Soiree will be another treat with well known published poets of the South – Maggie Sawkins, Stephen Boyce, Denise Bennett, John Haynes and Robert Hull – as The Spring Poets.

At the start of the day we were clueless as to what was going on, the English department refusing to even remotely hint as to what was planned insisting that it would be amazing. And how right they were!

After entering the gym we were shortly introduced to Aidey the conductor of sorts for the day and six actors who were at our school on the pretence of giving a work shop to the year nine pupils. Each of the actors joined a group and the workshops began. But it was not long before we received a shocking announcement, a colleague of the actors who was due to be joining them in giving the workshop was discovered dead! Gasps broke out around the room and the mystery began.

The year nine pupils embraced their role as detective and wasted no time in interrogating the actors, our prime suspects, they all had alibies but they all had motives, though the plot thickens.

We were then presented with some evidence. Letters, photographs, physiological reports and even the box of a pregnancy test! Persistence and determination willed us to continue the investigation; assumptions were made, arguments broke out between the characters and a new character was thrown into the story. With an eye catching performance the actor threw another to the floor in a rage. Quite quickly from then on the arguments became heated and motives grew clearer.

Things become intense when a scream sounds emphasising the dull thud as a character drops dead to the floor. Another murder! The suspects are grilled and by this point it is clear that the students are enticed and motivated to find the killer.

At some point new evidence is presented and things become more curious.

The students are beginning to make conclusions when yet another character falls dead, a knife protruding from his back! This final murder presents a whole new set of questions that need to be asked but too soon it’s time to present out conclusions. No one I have spoken to yet that took part in the day has said they didn’t enjoy it and as the teachers claimed it was amazing! Absolutely brilliant and at the end of it I couldn’t help but join everyone else in enthusiastically applauding the English department in their planning skills and the actors compelling performances!

An overall impacting day that made the use of problem solving skills, team work and initiative far more fun than it’s ever been before!

The Dalai Lama

After spending a fair amount of time looking for parking we arrived at the stadium and instantly we were hit with a sense of diversity, culture and atmosphere. A huge stage sat at the top of the pitch decorated in an impressive array of colours, clearly where His Holiness would sit once he had arrived.

A major thing about the day was the outfits! But they were more than just outfits, the sort of clothes that make you stop and do a double take, costumes so intricate that your jaw drops. Exhibits of culture and tradition strolling around the stadium!

Before His Holiness arrived there were many performances, dancers from across the world portraying stories and events in a beautiful mixture of colour and music. I had the opportunity to interview one of the acts, some women from Nepal, in some stunning outfits, who were more than happy to explain their performance to me. “It’s a marital dance called Chyabsung, a big part of our culture. We’re from the Limbu community, an eastern part of Nepal.” One of the women explained.

His Holiness was delayed though that did not dampen spirits, and soon an announcement was made that he had finally arrived. Silence fell throughout the stadium and everyone rose in almost unison. Camera’s ready, it was as if all present had taken a deep breath, soft music began to play and then he appeared. The music continued as he made his was across the pitch and took his place on the stage.

Silence resumed as His Holiness prayed and when he was finished a symphony of applause greeted him, the effect his presence had on the audience was outstanding.

“Dear brothers and sisters, I am extremely happy to be here with you.” This is how he began and it struck me how humble he is, though at the same time what an impact these few words have. He continued to talk about the tradition of the English and the cookies he was greeted with, he laughed heartily, which warmed you to hear it and I begin to understand why he is known for it. He talked about the Buddhist teachings and emphasised the importance of ecology saying “We all have the potential to achieve.” He continued to say that Buddha was not the creator but the teacher, that in all Buddhist tradition the message of love, compassion, tolerance and forgiveness were significant. His Holiness expressed the idea of respect, that we must respect our own wishes which would be the basest of harmony. He concluded on the point of knowledge, advising us to pay more attention to knowledge and studying, that we should show interest in learning more and that he had appreciated his visit here. And then he did something most seventy six years olds wouldn’t, he walked around the pitch waving and smiling and though surrounded by camera men and reporters we were able to see him in all his greatness not two meters away from us!

This day was phenomenal, a once in a life time chance that so many people; adults wish for but never get and yet as a thirteen year old I have experienced it, is unforgettable! The day in one word: “Inspirational!” - Jody Thompsett. “Amazing!” - Niamh Oldham - “Overall, fun!” – Rebecca Horne.

We’d like to express our Thanks to Mr Anders, Mr May, Mr Bye and Mr Watson for without whom we wouldn’t have been able to experience such an impacting event!

Local author Lorna Howarth has published an historical novel, Dearest Maude, set in our area in World War One. The story begins in Portsmouth and Southsea, before moving to The Royal Victoria Military Hospital at Netley. It is a love story – though not a romance, Lorna insists.

Lorna’s inspiration came from the fact that her grandfather was a soldier in the Great War. ‘He died before I was born,’ she explains, ‘but his presence was always felt in our family. He was one of the lucky ones who made it home from the trenches, but he eventually died of tuberculosis, which the doctors attributed to the terrible conditions the soldiers had had to endure.’

‘I’ve loved doing the research for the book,’ she continues, ‘and have even had a field trip to Ypres, which was very powerful.’

Lorna is an established short story writer, and although this is her first novel, she hopes it will be the first of many. She is a member of ‘The Havant and District Writers’ Circle at www.havantwriters.co.uk

Excerpt from ‘Dearest Maude’ The train’s already in, and soon the shadows of the station are sliding away, transforming into the backs of sunlit offices and shops. As the train gradually picks up speed, the buildings slip by faster and faster, rushing past the way the water does in the millstream at home. I lean back against the hard slats of the carriage seat.

What would Hubert think of my family? Would he mind Mother and her sharp ways, her big, red hands? Or Dad’s mill clothes, patched everywhere, and grey where the flour’s worked itself into the weave? And would he expect china cups?

He’d be disappointed if he did! Dad’d have more than a bit to say about him, I’m sure, for he’d know straight away that Hubert wasn’t one of us, what with his nice clothes and his manners and all. And that’s not counting his voice, neither. If there’s one thing Dad can’t abide, it’s a posh voice like Hubert’s. I sigh. Oh, yes, there’d be plenty said, all right.

The sun falls through the window and I close my eyes, let hedges and trees flicker their shadows across me. I turn my face to feel the warmth of the sun through the glass and imagine I’m walking up the path and round the back of the cottage.

There’s washing boiling in the copper, as there always is, and I stop to breathe in the smell of it.

Mother’s there, of course, and I give her a kiss then introduce him, say something like ‘This is Hubert, Mother, as I’ve told you about,’ though I haven’t yet, of course. I cross to the living room and take off my hat. Then I show Hubert our Arthur ‘s photograph and say would he like to go up to the churchyard after dinner and see Horace’s grave, for I never like to leave our Horace out, even now. A pot’s simmering on the range, rabbit I expect if Tom’s been up, and I do the potatoes and make a cup of tea, persuade Mother to sit with us for a few minutes by the range. I don’t suppose Hubert’s ever eaten rabbit stew. He’d be more used to lamb cutlets and Dover sole, I should have thought. I make him take Dad’s chair and I sit back at the table and mind my p’s and q’s, don’t take off my boots as I usually do to push my feet into the bright rag rug by the stove. That rug’s got all the shades of red you could imagine. There’s even some from one of Horace’s little shirts. Them bits are my favourites, though I never, ever, tread on them. I can’t. I know every part of that rug, for didn’t I help Mother make it after Horace died, to keep her mind off things? We used bits from old cast offs, and cuts Mrs Lawson gave me to take home from the ends of the rolls. Took us all winter, it did.

The train hoots like a banshee and I open my eyes with a start, feel myself pushing gently forwards as the train begins to brake. The wheels squeal against the track as we slide slowly towards our little village station.

‘Mornin’, Miss Timms.’ The stationmaster acknowledges me with a nod, lifts his fingers towards his cap in that half-hearted gesture of his before striding past me down the platform. Whenever I see him, I can’t help but remember the time he set his dog on me and Arthur, just for taking a couple of apples from his precious tree.

I’ve never forgiven him, and I’ve often been tempted to show I’ve still got the scars, except it would mean lifting my petticoats which wouldn’t be seemly.

‘Mr Coggins,’ I say curtly and nod at his retreating back, then glance towards the ticket office where I hope to see Walter.

Mum and daughter team launch Turtle Tots classes in Hampshire! by: Caroline Sparks Mums-to-be and new mums and babies will soon be able to sign up to Turtle Tots classes at locations in Hampshire, run by a mother and daughter team who have given up business careers to follow their passion for swimming!

Local mum and daughter Pam Hiscock and Rachel Nicholls have recently completed comprehensive Turtle Tots training, enabling them to run their own Turtle Tots business.

Turtle Tots is a new and unique swimming programme. It begins with “Turtle Tums” - aqua-natal yoga classes for pregnant mums, and continues with Turtle Tots specialist baby and toddler swimming classes.

Until last year Pam worked as the personal accountant for Viscount and Viscountess Cowdray in Midhurst, West Sussex. Daughter Rachel worked as an accountant at Estee Lauder Companies before she had her two daughters, Emily now 3 years old and Katie nearing 5 years old.

Rachel took her daughters to baby swimming lessons from when they were just 4 months old, and seeing how much their water confidence grew, and the fun they all had, she decided to retrain as a swimming instructor. She commented, “teaching swimming is incredibly rewarding and something both mum and I are passionate about. We are teaching an essential life skill and the babies and toddlers (and parents) have fun at the same time! We’ll also be teaching aquayoga for mums-to-be which we’re really looking forward to.”

Pam commented, “On a professional level I have a huge amount of business experience but on a personal level I have four children and seven grandchildren!

Teaching babies and toddlers is a far cry from the accounting world we are both used to, but we’ve been able to apply lots of our business skills to launching and running Turtle Tots in this area, and are really excited about our launch next month.”

Not only does the Turtle Tots programme focus on teaching babies and young children to swim, it also promotes pre-natal and post-natal fitness and provides an excellent toning workout for mums which can burn up to 250 calories in a single class! Of course the programme is open to dads as well, who are more than welcome to come along!

What’s more, Pam and Rachel are donating a percentage of every class cost to the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, who support and treat many children from across the region.

Delirium by Lauren Oliver Enticed by the first line; no, by the blurb. This book is outstanding, with a concept like no other. “What if love were a disease?” An emotion that surrounds us every day and yet a completely different perspective, and so well written!

Curiosity begins to overwhelm you on the first page, what’s going on, who’s telling me this story, what’s their background and why is this theirs to tell?

I immersed myself in this book and finished it in little more than a day, it was just so addictive, so far from reality and yet so close to home. Set in a futuristic America where strict guidelines are expected to be followed. Where your every move is monitored and where supplies are ever dwindling.

I confess the ending was tearful, and this disappointed me, I fell in love with the characters and the fate that greeted them was one that I hadn’t rooted for.

I would recommend this book highly to anyone and everyone! Five stars!

At The Original Place, Purbrook Way, Leigh Park, Motiv8’s drop-in service for young people is open all summer to help young people make up their minds what to do in September.

Experienced staff members are on hand to offer support to gain employment – CV writing, applications, interview skills, benefits, advice and guidance etc. And, as the new term starts, if young people find that the course they signed up for isn’t what they expected, the team is on hand to help with looking at alternative courses; so, our advice is, don’t wait a whole year to start a new course, come to Motiv8!

Although the service is still quite new there have already been many success stories. Chris* came into get some advice on applying for work. Staff worked with her to create a CV and show her how to search for jobs on the internet. The second visit she attended she brought a job opportunity with her that she had found on the internet and asked for assistance with phoning them and filling in an application form. Working together step by step to complete it resulted in her gaining an interview. With her new-found confidence, Chris was successful in gaining a part time post. She says, ‘I thank you for giving me some confidence to be able to make that phone call.’

MOTIV8-ING PUPILS AT PARK COMMUNITY SCHOOL Over the past academic year, local charity Motiv8 has been delivering an alternative education programme for 18 pupils from Park Community School. The pupils were selected for the programme because they were considered to be at risk of disengaging from education for a variety reasons some of which included low confidence, attendance issues, or poor behaviour. The overall aim of the programme was to reengage them in learning and develop personal and social skills. One day per week the pupils have taken part in a mixture of booklet work and activity based learning to achieve a National Open College Network (NOCN) Level 1 qualification. The most recent trip to HMP Kingston, which the young people found thought-provoking, has enabled them to the complete the final accreditation module ‘Understanding Young People, Law and Order’.

Pupils on the programme have felt that they have benefited, and as the programme draws to a close young people have reflected, with one saying that ‘it’s helped me to concentrate better in school’ and another saying that ‘it’s better to do well, than get into trouble all the time’. Park community school have noticed a reduction in incidences from the pupils and that they have more motivation to do work in school.

Motiv8 support workers have enjoyed getting to know the young people and wish them every success for the future.

The Rogue Run by: Chris Savage - Rogue Run

The Rogue Run is a charity drive across Europe raising both money and awareness for The Jennifer Trust for Spinal Muscular Atrophy which assists UK children and adults suffering from this degenerative illness.

Rogue Run has been set up by local Leigh Park man Chris Savage, together with several friends dotted across England, all with a love of cars. The 2012 drive covered nearly 3,000 miles, visiting Monaco, Maranello, Austria, Germany and Amsterdam. With just 6 cars and 15 people invited, the group raised £2,000 for the charity through personal and corporate sponsorship. Next year’s trip is aiming to raise between £15,000 - £20,000 for the same charity.

For the 2013 Run (22 - 27 May), the drive is being opened up for public attendance at a cost of £150 per driver, with a minimum of 2 drivers per car. This covers organisation costs, ferry charges and camp-site fees. Any profits will be donated to the charity as the organisers do not take a wage. The drive is being limited to 50 cars, so places are genuinely limited. As long as your car is road legal, you are more than welcome to join in with this forthcoming trip involving French National parks, twisty Austrian roads, the famous German Autobahns and some amazing views and memories along the way.

The 2013 run has already got some BMW's, Jags, Modified Ford Escorts, Focus',VW Vans and more booking in. Whatever you drive, standard or modified, it's a drive you won't forget in a hurry.

The event will take place in Havant Park between 12.00 and 5.00pm and will be a fun day out for the whole family. It will feature music, activities and food from around the world.

Havant Multi-cultural Forum represents Havant's growing black & minority ethnic population and sees the Festival as a fun way of celebrating cultural diversity in the borough. Langstone Sailability on the Water by: Peter Chinn

At long last after disappointing weeks of cancellation of sailing events, Langstone Sailability Open Day on Saturday 21st July, was able to enjoy all the pleasures good weather brings to sailing activities. Seventy people plus Members and registered helpers and virtually all of Langstone Sailability boats, specially designed for disabled sailors took to the water plus two inflatable safety boats. A great time was had by all.

The BBQ held after sailing was completed was enjoyed by all and many compliments were received, the day can be counted as a great success. It was particularly rewarding for Langstone Sailability Chairman, Mike Bartholomew, who had recently given a presentation to the Hayling Businessmen’s Club, to welcome a member, Mr Dave Stanway, his wife and son, Wyatt, to share in Sailability hospitality. Dave and his family were able to enjoy both sailing and power boat activities, and it was easy to see how much young Wyatt enjoyed being on the water. This part of the day was an opportunity to say thank you again to the Hayling Businessmen’s Club for the financial help they have provided to Langstone Sailability this year.

KENWOOD - Listen to the Future by: Sophie Crowther, Year 9, Warblington School

On Wednesday 11 July, we visited Kenwood's Cook and Coffee Academy on New Lane as part of Unit 3 of our Hospitality Diploma.

On our visit staff members, including the Development Chef, Martin, helped us to improve and develop our pudding recipes. We were also shown how to use and handle amazing state of the art equipment designed by Kenwood itself.

We were set a challenge to produce the best pudding that would be tasted and rated. During our challenge we learnt many skills, including how to use professional equipment and how to produce amazing puddings with the help of a professional chef.

STYLISH INDIAN RESTAURANT ARRIVES IN HAVANT Step into Chilli and Lime for the first time and you will see a modern contemporary air conditioned decor and this sets the tone that you are not in any ordinary Indian restaurant.

Russell Chaundry and his staff aim to provide top service and food that will excite your taste buds. They do not cook with Ghee (they use olive oil) or food colourings in their food and all food is freshly prepared. The menu gives a wide range of authentic Indian and Bangladeshi dishes; two of their specialities are Chicken Tikka Morissa (a fiery dish with fresh green chilli, thinly sliced chicken strips and special spices) and Lamb Xacuti (a Goan speciality cooked with coconut). He is also developing a special fish menu as well. All dishes are individually prepared and special dietry requirements can be met together with a delivery and take away service.

My colleague and I started with Tandoori Mix Kebab which was really delicious. He chose Chicken Tikka Morissa with pilau rice - pure white together with Mushroon Bhaji and Tarka Dhall and gave it a 10/10! Anybody who knows me well will place money on me ordering a Chicken Karahi - yes I did! - not on the menu but it arrived in a traditional Karahi dish - and yes I too gave it 10/10 as well.

The menu provides a comprehensive range of sweets but we did not go that far. I will revisit Chilli and Lime again - it offers quality food at very reasonable prices and Russell and his staff give that extra service that sets this restaurant above their competitors. The restaurant has been awarded the top food hygiene rating of 5.

Local lad Steve Pearcey has completed an apprenticeship with Southern Water and is now working full-time at Budds Farm Wastewater Treatment Works.

Steve, 26, who lives in Leigh Park has completed the three year training programme run by the company and will, following a six-month probation period, become a qualified Electrical Technician.

The company’s apprentice programme is run in partnership with training company Babcock International and involves a combination of practical work on site and time at college to learn the trade. In addition, all apprentices spend six months at HMS Sultan, a world class training centre in Gosport.

Steve has spent the majority of his time working at Budds Farm and will continue to be based at the site and joins another past apprentice Lisa Gore who qualified two years ago. He has been supported throughout by his mentor, Barry Cornish.

Steve said: “The programme has provided a good balance between the theoretical college work and the practical hands-on work on site and has given me the skills I need to do my job to a high standard. The support I have received from my mentor Barry has been essential as he is so skilled and experienced.

“It is a great programme and I am very grateful for the opportunity. I am looking forward to developing my skills further in the future.”

Dean Galloway, Site Manager at Budds Farm, said: “Having someone young and enthusiastic who has been trained by the company and has developed the skills we need on site to do the job required is such a benefit. Steve has done really well and is a great asset to the team.”

Southern Water currently has around sixty apprentices at various stages in the programme. The company offers a range of apprenticeships including Water Supply and Distribution and Mechanical and Electrical.

Chris Maloney, Southern Water’s Director of Human Resources, said: “It is important that large companies like Southern Water plan for the future by training and investing in our people and that is exactly what we are doing with our apprenticeships.

“In the current jobs climate, vocational training with the promise of a job is a fantastic opportunity for young people to forge a rewarding career and we are pleased to be able to help them on that road to success.”

For the second year running CTC Portsmouth, in conjunction with Cycle Hayling, has been fully involved with the Havant Goes Greener week.

Organising and running 6 short ‘Family Friendly’ rides over the week and then on the Saturday running a stall at the HGG Fair in Havant Park.

The organised rides were not a success without any takers for the rides, although there was one couple who had indicated attendance, but failed to appear.

In contrast the Fair stall was a great success with a steady stream of visitors trying out the competitions and signing up to the 2 cycling related petitions.

The main competition was the Turbo Trainer Challenge where a competitor was timed riding ½ mile from a standing start on an exercise bike. The results were then displayed on a Leader Board and as the day proceeded the desire to beat the best times drew out the competitive spirit. Often the competitor’s family would gather round and urge on the rider. In all there were 37 ‘rides’ completed with the best man’s time of 48 seconds and 9 of the 16 men riders recording sub 1 minute times. In the woman’s rides the best time was 1 min10secs, although from the ‘Girls’ Leader Board, a 16 year old girl beat that with a 1min 7secs. The best boy’s time, beating most of the men’s time was a 16 year old with 54 seconds. Well done to all those especially the leaders in each category. It just shows how quickly travelling by bike for short distances can be.

The other competition, mainly aimed at youngsters, was to write down 10 or more good and valid reasons why people ride (or should ride) bicycles. There were 6 entries here, all winning prizes and some interesting reasons not normally seen such as ‘You can do tricks’ and ‘Easy to get ready’.

The 2 petitions were for the Off-road Cycle Route through the A3 Butser Cutting created by CTC Portsmouth and Cycle Hayling’s to make Hayling ‘Britain’s 1st Cycle-Centred Island’ for the good of both residents and visitors. There was a good response to both petitions with another 39 signatures added to the A3 Butser Cutting collection which overall, including the on-line version, is now past the 1,100 mark.

All in all a great day, and a big ‘Thank You’ to all the helpers, supporters and visitors

Sign of the Times

The organisers were overwhelmed by the response to the open meeting on May 10 to test support for the formation of a U3A in Havant. Despite the miserable rain over 160 people struggled to find a seat in the largest meeting room in the United Reformed Church rooms, with its capacity of 100.

Five minutes before the start time, Mrs Pat Pile, the URC rooms bookings manager, in desperation offered alternative accommodation in the main church.

“We were astounded”, said Judith Worley who chaired the meeting, “I imagined about fifty people, at the most, would come. However, because everyone was so well-disposed and understanding we got off to a very friendly start. A number of good people volunteered to form a steering committee and the vote to begin a U3A was passed unanimously.”

“Well done”, said Pam Jones South East Region Trustee, “this was the best open meeting I have attended.”

Now the hard work begins for Judith and the steering committee. The University of the Third Age has high standards of credibility so they will have to meet some testing criteria before the Havant U3A is judged ready for its official launch.

U3A has some 840 groups in the UK with 250,000 members studying more than 300 different subjects. There is only one criterion for membership: you should be no longer in full-time paid employment.

Activities in U3As depend upon the skills and interests of their members and how much they are prepared to share these with other members. Typically there will be a programmes of monthly meetings with guest speakers to which all members are invited, also of social events such as theatre trips, study days, holidays, etc. However, the core activity of any U3A is its interest groups – groups that meet together, usually in each other’s homes, to share an interest in a particular subject or activity. Members learn from other members. Everyone is a volunteer.

As Catherine Madina, a speaker at the meeting, said, “Ask not what U3A can do for YOU, but what YOU can do for U3A”.

Havant U3A is open for members. The launch meeting is planned for Thursday 19 July at the United Reformed Church in Elm Lane, Havant, at 2.30 pm and from September they will be meeting there on the third Thursday of each month.

Cycling is on the up - all government cycling statistics prove that, and on Hayling Island a local cycling campaigning group Cycle Hayling is doing their bit. Cycle Hayling appears have to already succeeded in one of its ambitions to increase cycling on the island by raising the profile of cycling generally and with it’s much in demand cycling maps, now at the 2nd edition.

Cycle Hayling has now scored a further success with the installation of Cyclist Welcome signs at important points already used by cyclist. Cycle Hayling and CTC Portsmouth member Wilf Farrow has led this project and with funding support from HCC, via Councillor Frank Pearce communities’ fund, has had 3 signs installed.

This project depended for its success on the excellent services of Hayling Graphics who adapted and assisted on the sign design and the HCC’s Sign Workshop who produced and installed each sign.

One is at the north end of the Billy Trail on Hayling, one at the southern end of the Billy Trail by the Station Theatre and the 3rd by the Ferry. Even while the signs were being erected passing cyclists were admiring the A0 size signs and many positive comments have been received by residents.

The United States of America were not the only ones heralding the 4th of July, as Havant Children’s University, an aspiration-raising organisation that encourages school pupils - largely spanning ages 7-14 - to participate in extracurricular activity, opened The King’s Theatre on not one, but two, occasions in order to host their annual awards evening.

The first ceremony saw 76 young learners appear “so bright and shiny” in traditional, academic regalia – and this “lovely blue stuff” was particularly praised by award winning author and Children’s University chancellor Ali Sparkes, who compared the winner’s efforts to the protagonists of her novels, above all commending the university that “gets children out and doing things” as opposed to leaving them in front of the TV. Such success was reaffirmed by Joe Mengham and Marley Cartland, who both participated in sporty courses and were “really glad” and “happy” to be there.

If you were previously unfamiliar with the Children’s University, that should change, as its expansion to the Netherlands, Malaysia and Australia are sure to see attain the recognition it well and truly deserves.

Baby & Toddler of the Year 2012 Competition Raising Money for DEBRA Rob Paul Studios based in Havant, has been taking photos of a host of babies and toddlers across the area in the Baby & Toddler of the Year 2012 competition. Stronger, More Flexible, Pain-Free People in PO9 Tips and exercises from our Olympic Physio My name is Natalie March (nee Stephenson) from Physiological in PO9. Wow what an amazing few weeks I’ve just had.

With over 18,000 applicants and only 4000 medical positions available I was delighted to be selected as one of the physiotherapists at the London 2012 Olympics.

I was based in Weymouth at the sailing village. I treated elite sailors and windsurfers from around the world including a gold medallist sailor, also medal finalists from China, France, Greece, Spain, Italy, Ukraine to name a few.

One of them was kind enough to say, “I would like to express my greatest thanks for the job you've done with all my "troubles", I am amazed with your knowledge, experience and speed in reducing sport injuries and dysfunctions!”

It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and experience. A positive “can do” attitude pervaded the village and it was wonderful the way the many different nationalities got on with each other. All the athletes and people I worked with were extremely friendly and good fun to be with.

Well the Olympics is over and I’m back home now and looking forward to helping patients recover from any sports injuries, aches or pains. I can’t promise any medals but will help you get back to your peak fitness levels.

WAITROSE HAVANT HELPS LOCAL CHARITY - HOME-START Havant’s local supermarket Waitrose has released their Personnel Manager Jess Linsley for 3 months as part of their Golden Jubilee Trust scheme. This enables Partners to work within a charity of their choice to share their skills and best practice and to transfer personal skills to another placement. This gives the Partner an insight into life in a different setting and enables them to give back to the local community.

Jess has worked for Waitrose for 23 years and decided to apply for the scheme back in March. “ I wanted to choose a charity which was crucial to my local community, linking family issues with child welfare, Home-Start Havant was the obvious choice” They have been supporting families in the Havant Borough for 28 years; trained volunteers give vulnerable, isolated families with at least one child under five, friendship, and practical assistance in their own homes during difficult times in their lives to help prevent crisis and family breakdown.

The charity currently supports 75 families in the area but desperately needs local support with funding, it costs £1500 per year to support a family with a weekly volunteer. “ I have completed the 8 week volunteer course which enables me to support families but I am also spending time looking for sponsorship, applying for funding, and providing general office support.

I picked up a copy of your publication PO9 in Havant and read it with interest.

I belong to an organisation called Al-Anon Family Groups. We are a registered charity, have been established in the UK for over 60 years and provide help and support to anyone who has been affected by someone else’s drinking.

One of our meetings is held each week at St Faiths Church Hall in The Pallant in Havant.

I wondered if you could perhaps do a feature story on our Organisation to let people know that there is help available if they have been affected by a loved one’s drinking.

Havant Bus Station

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, I received the `PO9 Postcode Community Newspaper` which had an article about Havant Bus Station, asking for people to write about their likes and dislikes about the same.

I don’t use the bus station that much, but what absolutely appals me, is the large number of cigarette ends outside the main building. It’s disgusting. I caught the bus there on 23rd July, arriving at about 10.00 and the bus bays were full of cigarette ends. Inside, it wasn’t too bad, but an early morning visit not long ago, saw the interior to be quite dirty. Why can`t it be swept out early every morning?

The floor’s grey paving slabs are probably the most practical flooring, but unfortunately it always looks dirty, what with the chewing gum etc.

It’s hardly surprising, that there are a lot of cigarette ends, with so many people puffing away on their ciggies, so keeping it clean outside must be very difficult to a point where I doubt if anyone bothers, which is hardly surprising really.

Then there are the bus crews that congregate next to the main building, all puffing away all day as they await their turn of duty. Why can`t they be provided with suitable facilities, away from the public’s gaze, to contain their habit.

Ideally, the bus station should be like railway stations, where smoking is banned anywhere around its premises, otherwise we will have to put up with the bus station having this grubby appearance.

One Last Cuddle

I remember when he arrived, straight in tail wagging tried to lick me to death before wolfing down the cats food! That was the arrival of Bran.

I had waited a long time to get a dog; Jackie, my wife was less than keen but after 18 years of me pleading I finally got my way. Bran was a rescue dog, he came from Ireland where he had been so very badly mistreated, and he was in poor shape. It was not long before we learnt how clever he was, he loved to learn new tricks, he could catch a ball at 5 feet would pick up his doggie bag and deposit it into the bin. He played tennis and football, he would jump and climb he was devoted and loyal. He would always be at my side and loved to walk the Hayling Billy Line.

Bran would howl at Coronation Street and Eastenders! He was a great door alarm; handy, as I am deaf.

Bran even defended Gizmo our Paul and Bran cat when she was attacked by feline intruder.

We have many tales of joy about Bran, his antics can be seen on YouTube, “Bran The Super Dog” visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBsTsIY7Nbk&noredirect=1 (scan QR above) A week ago Bran became less able to use his back legs. On Tuesday we took the decision to have him put to Sleep.

We had to say goodbye and let him go to suffer no more pain. The Vet from Harbour Vet practice came to our house and was fantastic. I said goodbye and Bran peacefully went to sleep. He has a place in our Garden now.

I knew it was right for Bran to suffer no more, before he went I had one last cuddle…

8 Benefits of Local Street markets Awareness to Action by: Bhaskar Raju In this fast-paced life-style, like any other shopper, most of us pop into the supermarket after a busy day at work, to pick up a few bits for dinner and other items. Sometimes, we make the impromptu visit to a nearby branch of any big supermarket in our free time to spend extra bucks, with no awareness of the sneaky ways supermarkets spur spending of customers.

This can be acceptable to certain extent, due to fast-changing work environments and related lifestyle changes. However, as we’ve seen recessions recently, and survived through cost cutting measures; this is the time to look for ways to lead a more sustainable life-style with low cost of living. One of the ways is shopping at local street markets.

We‘ve been seeing Havant Street Market coming to our town Centre Tuesdays and Saturdays of every week. The Market offers a comprehensive range of produce stalls from clothes, fruit and vegetables, tools, artists' materials, continental cuisine, greetings cards, flowers and much more. Whenever I go for shopping, I ask the traders few questions and interestingly the answers for few questions are same by every trader.

Most of the traders agree that their business is not as expected due to little money with the customers in recent years. They have been offering items for less prices to the customers compared to big supermarkets, retails stores, fast-food chains. Most of the items are made locally and few items such as children toys, 3D pictures, stickers were brought from nearest towns or London.

Even though, they are able to attract mix of young, old and middle-aged customers, there is decline in younger generation customers visiting their stalls. This made me motivate to write article targeting younger generations to bring awareness about benefits of shopping at local street markets. This is more important particularly for young generations, who are more vulnerable to recessions due to shrinking economies and redundancies at work.

Local street markets have benefits in the areas not only of regeneration, economic development and culture, but also food and health, community cohesion and the environment.

Let’s see 8 benefits of promoting street markets selling locally sourced goods and be shopping locally in street markets.

1. You can shop for quality items, which are produced locally at prices that are as good, or better, than the supermarkets.

2. You can get seasonal selection of fresh produce which supports good health.

3. Locally produced foods spend less time for shipping. So, less probability for food to loose nutrients.

4. There is evidence to suggest that the existence of street markets supports higher living standards due to their lower prices.

5. Local street markets generate many jobs and better employment opportunities to local people.

6. When you shop with local merchants, more of your money stays close to home; supporting the parks, libraries and other things that make this community a great place to live.

7. Evidence from numerous surveys shows people receive better customer care and service in local markets. Traders survive by their reputation and repeat business - so shopping locally means that you get a higher standard of service.

8. By visiting street markets/farmer’s market, not only will you be supporting a local farmer, you’ll also be supporting sustainable farming practices – one that doesn’t involve pesticides/herbicides.

Local street markets represent our oldest and most successful form of exchanging goods supporting independent economy. Over time, we attracted to spending our income outside our economy. Eventually this lead to greater dependence on the outside world. If we promote the environment of consuming the locally produced goods, our life styles will be safe-guarded against high impact of recession.

There is no losing with local items; everybody wins including environment by not burning fossil fuels in transporting them.

To ensure these benefits are maximised in future, we must support these ancient market activities. In recent years, there is growing importance of Corporate Social Responsibility amongst the companies of all sizes in continuing commitment to improve local community and society at large. In similar way, it’s the time for every one of us to involve in this social responsibility activity at personnel level by supporting local street markets and promoting self-sustaining economy for sustainable future.

I would like to raise awareness of the service I work for which is of benefit to all those residents in PO9 aged 55 years and over whom may need assistance in accessing their community and/or in helping them to remain living at home independently for as long as possible.

As part of our awareness campaign locally, we are looking to work closely with the local Voluntary, NHS, Borough Council and community based sector in an attempt to forge local links and build on the existing awareness of our service in PO9.

Our service is free to those who are eligible to access it and the key aim is to enable people to live within their homes for as long as possible and reducing their need to access formal Social Services., thus, improving their quality of life.

Dynamos Take the Directing Challenge by: Tony Goodbody

Havant Dynamo Youth Theatre’s recent show The Button Box was nearly all directed, arranged and choreographed by its own senior members.

Kate Burrows (pictured) said “Both the two pieces I directed with my group had highs and lows but all my cast gave of their best efforts.” Matt Sturgess felt The Button Box had “given me the challenge to direct a piece which is suitable and enjoyable for the younger audience.”

Eighteen year old Jay Jupe commented “Being musical director for this show has been a challenge. Trying to keep an overview of all the songs, when they are all being rehearsed simultaneously in the same room, in the same rehearsal, has made my mind explode at times. I’ve had to teach a love song set in World War One whilst another group has been singing a calypso number within centimetres of me!”

Jay, Matt and Kate will all appear in Dynamo’s small cast sixth form show Out of Focus, a comedy about an unfortunate over-booking of a church hall and the chaos which ensues.

Local teenager selected for award winning Academy training programme Waterlooville resident Ben Gibbon is celebrating the start of a new career after securing an apprenticeship on the award winning Academy programme with Barratt Group.

Ben was chosen from of a total of 42 applicants and is due to begin the course at the end of August, where he will be working on site at the new David Wilson Homes development in Purbrook.

During the two year plumbing apprenticeship, Ben will take part in a college course while also receiving professional training and supervised development, working towards an industry recognised qualification. At the end of the course there is an option to extend the apprenticeship.

Thanks to its Academy scheme, Barratt Group, the parent company of Barratt and David Wilson Homes is able to support its apprentices in developing a broad range of skills, while being supported by professionals already working in construction roles on site.

Combining professional training, both on site and in the classroom, with industry recognised qualifications, the Academy aims to deliver craft and trade specialists, site managers and people with specialist technical and commercial knowledge.

As well as the practical subjects covered as a plumbing apprentice, Ben will also learn about project management and customer service, which means that by the end of his apprenticeship he will have received an enhanced level of training ready to

put into practice.

Community liaison manager Anthony Dimmick said, “I am delighted that Ben will be joining the Academy programme, and I think he’ll find the experience he gains in the next few years invaluable. The top five per cent of apprentices who complete the Academy programme are offered site management positions, which is testament to the level of expertise developed during the course.

“I think for Ben to be able to carry out his apprenticeship in his local area is fantastic – he can develop his own future while also developing the future of the local community.”

Ben Gibbon said, “I’m so pleased to be have been chosen – Barratt Group has a great reputation and I’m really looking forward to starting my apprenticeship. I live in the local area and plumbing is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time so this is perfect for me.”

Local schoolgirl lays foundations for career in construction Barratt has been helping one local schoolgirl get ahead in the jobs world, long before she even leaves school.

Fourteen year old Katherine Colley already has her career mapped out – the Purbrook Park schoolgirl wants to work in construction and has completed work experience with the region’s leading housebuilder.

Katherine has just finished a two week work experience programme with Barratt, which has reinforced her aim to work in construction.

Katherine is determined to become a carpenter and has completed her Construction Skills Test, the entry requirement for an apprenticeship.

Living with Prostate Cancer

Hi John Statham here, many of you will have seen me riding around Leigh Park on my bike, but not since last December because in October last year I started passing Blood when I went to toilet and it carried on all night. In the morning I contacted my sons and I went with my oldest son into A & E at Queen Alexander Hospital. A nurse came and saw me and asked if I could do a sample, which I did, and straight away she phoned the ward to ask for a bed, so straight onto the ward and for the next 12 days it was many tests, in fact so many blood tests that I felt like a pin cushion.

On 7th December I saw the Consultant who gave me the news that I had Advanced Prostate Cancer.

After a few tears with my sons I decided that the Cancer would not stop me living life to the best I can, when people say “take it easy” I reply “NO that’s giving in to it”.

So many tablets, puffers, blood tests and consultations later I am not giving in and I have a positive mental attitude which I think is the answer, not to beat the cancer but to live with it.

What has made me so proud is that my son Keith came to me later and said he wanted to do a ride for Cancer, I thought 10 maybe 20 miles but no, he and his mates are riding unsupported to LANDS END that’s about 300 miles.

If you think you may have something wrong, don’t do what I did and ignore it “I’m a man and don’t get ill”, please go to your doctor and get yourself checked.

Leigh Park Christmas Grotto Leigh Park Christmas Grotto is run by a team of dedicated volunteers, and this year 2012 will be no exception. Without the kind support of the owners of Greywell Shopping Centre who every year allow us to use an empty unit at no cost, and give some funding to help purchase presents the grotto would not succeed.

The Leigh Park Christmas Grotto has been running for some ten years, with different volunteers through the years. Some of the volunteers have been involved for seven or eight years now.

The Grotto will be opening on the Friday 30th November, with children from local primary schools invited to come along and sing carols for Santa, and a “Lantern Procession” is held later on, on the opening day. The grotto will be open through until 22nd December, we endeavour to give the children and families a magical experience on their visit to Santa.

Emsworth Primary School – Eco Day

Early in June Emsworth Primary School rang Portsmouth Water and asked us to take part in their Eco Day. The following week saw us meet with school staff involved with the Eco Day and suddenly we realised the enormity of the task in front of us. It was an event for the whole school lasting all day with ages ranging from 5 – 11 which meant in the words of Roy Scheider from the film Jaws “we’re going to need a bigger boat!”

We needed to have fun activities that would fit and engage all age groups. So we came up with a quiz on saving water where the children stood next to the person holding up what they thought was the right answer and getting a sticker for each time they got an answer right. We used a cool wall to get the girls and boys working competitively against each other. We showed the children a simple filtration experiment and wowed them with the horrible bugs that we have to clean from the water. Using our very own working water cycle model we talked through the various stages of the water cycle and then got the children doing a practical exercise outdoors that showed them how water can travel through chalk and not through clay.

The day started promptly at 9.00 am and we delivered in total 10 sessions each throughout the day, most of them back to back. It was a long day but well worth the effort and you could see that the children loved it from their enthusiasm and shouting during the activities. Best of all is that we really believe that they went home that day better informed about water and saving water than when they arrived that day. Let’s hope they keep it up and pester Mum and Dad to do the same.

To finish off a wonderful experience, the children sent in a scrapbook with thank you notes inside and pictures of us delivering our sessions. The messages from the smaller children are really heart warming and you just know they mean what they say!

BEACON FOOD BANK Public Awareness Raising Day – everyone welcome

Some people are amazed to find that there is a food bank operating in Havant and wonder if there is a real need for such a service. It is hard to believe – if you have a job and are keeping up with your mortgage/rent/bills etc. However, it can happen to anyone. Lose your job or your financial security for whatever reason: redundancy, illness, bereavement or family breakdown and suddenly everything can very quickly get beyond you. Come and see what we do.

Beacon Food Bank is run by Portsdown Community Church, who meet in the Beacon in the Meridian Centre. It started because we could see our neighbours in trouble and we wanted to help and it has grown from there. We don’t operate a drop-in service but we do operate a referral system and take referrals from most agencies and charities. Most of our referrals come from Children’s’ Services, Family Support workers, Guinness Care & Support and Youth Support Workers, but we have also taken referrals from The Wheatsheaf Trust, The Probation Service, The Family Intervention Centre, MIND, care homes, doctors & community nurses, local churches and other charitable groups - to name but a few!

Last financial year, we gave out free hampers to people in need in the Havant Borough, to the value of £7945 and this year the need is constantly increasing. The food we give away comes purely from donations by the public. Local churches have been particularly active in promoting the need for donations. Every hamper is given freely and without discrimination, judgement or expectation of any return. Each hamper contains approximately 3 days or more of food and includes some fresh goods.

Anyone can make a donation of food – or a financial donation if you prefer. Money is used to purchase the fresh goods.

TORCH RELAY AT THE ROWANS HOSPICE by: Amanda Mahoney The Olympic Torch visited The Rowans Hospice to celebrate London 2012. Becky Wilson from Wickham, who had the honour of carrying the torch in July, brought it in to the Hospice for patients to see. The Torch was passed around the Hospice as everyone took turns to hold it, including the nurses and volunteers.

Tracy Jeffery, Day Care Manager at The Rowans Hospice, said: “Thank you so much to Becky for bringing in the Olympic Torch. We had a lovely day and it made everyone feel part of the celebrations: London 2012 has brought the community together, encouraged volunteering and inspired a generation; an ethos which we can relate to within hospice care.”

Some of the nurses took time out to have their pictures taken with the Torch and even did their own version of the Usain Bolt pose. The Torch relay began in Day Care and continued around the ward to the in-patients allowing everyone the opportunity to see or hold the Torch.

The Rowans Hospice is a local charity which provides specialist hospice care and support to patients with life-limiting illness resident in Portsmouth and south-east Hampshire, their relatives and carers. All the care given is without charge.

The Rowans Hospice team works with the NHS specialist palliative care teams to achieve optimal quality of life for families affected by life limiting illness both within the community and at our hospice.

With the support of volunteers and other care services the hospice supports families during illness through to bereavement.

It costs more than £4 million each year to provide hospice care and to ensure the hospice building and grounds are well maintained, offering a haven for rest and recuperation. The provision of our Hospice at Home service increases this figure to over £4.5 million. Although The Rowan’s Hospice receives some statutory support from the NHS and Social Services, over £3.3 million (or £3.8 million including Hospice at Home) still needs to be fund raised each year. This would not be achieved without help and support from the local community.

Did you know that: • The biggest recorders are over 6 feet tall?

• The smallest recorder usually played is only 9 inches long?

• As orchestra of different sized recorders meets in PO9?

The Hampshire Recorder Sinfonia (HRS) plays recorders ranging from the tiny sopranino to the 6 foot contrabass. Some 2530 players rehearse regularly at Warblington School for concerts played mainly through Hampshire and Sussex. One of its performing highlights was an exchange with a Dutch recorder orchestra. Together, the two orchestras played in Southampton and Portsmouth and in The Hague and Leiden. In addition to performing, the orchestra has recorded three compact discs over the years.

HRS players are of all ages and backgrounds but they share a love of playing music together. Their music covers a wide spectrum from early music to music fresh from the composer’s computer: big band, jazz and blues; orchestral arrangements; sacred and secular music; seasonal music and international music. Some of the music is written specifically for HRS. The orchestra developed from a children’s class run by HRS’s Musical Director, Christopher Burgess, at The Spring (then the Havant Arts Centre) some 25 years ago. Soon adults asked if they could join. As more experienced players with bigger instruments joined, the group developed into an orchestra which included the widest range of recorders usually played. At that time, HRS was one of only 4 recorder orchestras in the country. Since then, interest in the recorder has soared so that there are now more than 10 recorder orchestras in the UK. College students win Army Competition by:Verity Bousher

Two catering students have returned from Germany as winners of the civilian section of Exercise Rhino Caterer, the annual British Army cookery competition.

Matt Essery and Kate Edwards were accompanied by lecturer Iain Baillie for the three days of the competition, competing against over thirty teams of both military and civilian contestants. The culinary skills of all contestants were put to the test in a range of indoor and outdoor locations that simulated the environment faced by army chefs.

The teams slept in tents and used a dustbin oven to cook ingredients from an Afgan themed mystery parcel; prepared field kitchens to produce meals for twenty soldiers from ration packs and planned and prepared a dish for the judges in a live theatre cook off.

The competition was judged by a range of military and civilian representatives including Simon Rimmer from Channel f’s Sunday Brunch. The South Downs College team excelled, collecting first place awards in three out of four challenges.

Iain explained, “I am immensely proud of the effort that the students put in and we are very proud to have won the award. The experience of cooking high quality food on a piece of metal and in a dustbin buried in the ground fuelled by a temperamental wood fire was something very different for the students who normally work in state of the art kitchens at College. The high praise from military chefs who have had many years of practice was particularly rewarding.”

Kate, who will be completing her Level two cookery exams this week said, “We really enjoyed the four days, despite the early starts and late finishes! We enjoyed the friendliness of the soldiers and other competitors and are over the moon to have won! I will always remember this incredible experience. Kate intends to progress to a Level 3 Professional Cookery course at South Downs next year.

I had the pleasure of meeting one of your editorial team and telling him how interesting I found your paper and am looking forward to the day it covers PO6, (Cosham area). Also I don't know how you print it but it is lovely not to have printing ink on my hands when I have finished reading.

I would like to tell you about Help in Bereavement which covers Hayling Island to Petersfield, Emsworth to Fareham, Gosport and Portsmouth.

In 1979 the rising number of patients suffering with unresolved grief issues following bereavement was causing concern amongst psychiatrists, community workers and clergy, out of this the registered charity Help in Bereavement (HiB) was founded. Two of our founder members, Dr. Isabel Pine and Mrs. Joan Eddings are the Patron and President respectively. In order to assist in relieving distress (whether mental, physical or spiritual) following a bereavement, the charity provides a listening ear and visiting service in 3 local geographical areas, (see map attached). This service is provided by trained visitors who are all unpaid volunteers. At present there are 32 of these visitors covering the 3 areas under the direction of Team Leaders and a Co-ordinator.

All visitors are checked and cleared by the Criminal Records Bureau.

Visitors receive specialised training with assistance from the Rowans Hospice, Primary Care Trust and others. Further training courses are held throughout the year to assist with their development. Visitors meet bereaved people, both adults and children at the request of the bereaved or of a doctor, a school, a social worker, or some other professional consultant. Such meetings usually take place in the privacy of the bereaved’s own home, school or another mutually agreed venue.

HiB Doves is a separate section of HiB specialised in helping children. We have been working with children for a number of years but only just given the section it’s own identity. Doves currently has 6 visitors, supported by a children’s co-ordinator.

HiB endeavours to respond to a request for help within 7 days of the initial contact irrespective of colour, race or creed, marital or parental status, sex, sexual orientation, social class or age.

Help in Bereavement is a small charity with no premises and no employed staff. It is entirely run by unpaid volunteers and it’s main expenses are the day to day running costs such as maintaining a Web Site, insurance, publicity material, travelling expenses, telephone calls, postage, children’s accoutrements, etc. Our annual outgoings are approximately £4000 per year all of which are met by donations, fund raising, etc.

The Omega Centre

Life is full of surprises and a recent visit to the WEA (Workers Education Association) Omega Centre in Portsmouth was one of them. This vibrant, well- appointed Centre supplying the needs of so many people in an attractive red brick Victorian building, certainly impressed.

Shown round by the enthusiastic administrator and financial officer, Dawn Hope, on a normal weekday there was a fitness class for students with special needs in the main hall, literacy and numeracy classes, classes for ESOL (English for speakers of another language) being held in other rooms. I was also shown a well-equipped IT suite, art rooms and film editing facilities. There can be as many as ten activities taking place in the Centre at one time. Particularly impressive is the Omega Print room dating back decades with the original presses used by the Omega Printers still in use today.

The WEA took on the running of the building in 2008, and the considerable refurbishment was made possible through a legacy left

by Canon Ivor Jeffery-Machin and his wife Brenda who were both great believers in the value of lifelong and community learning, the Canon having been a part-time tutor for the WEA from 1940 until 1984.

Those who attend the Centre for the different classes may be given free tuition if on benefits and funding is jointly supplied by the WEA and Portsmouth Council. It was gratifying to think that some of the money paid for Havant WEA courses such as Art Appreciation is used to help those who might otherwise miss out on learning opportunities.

The Community Independence Team (CIT) supports people aged 55 or over, who are experiencing difficulties maintaining their independence and who may be beginning to find it harder to manage around the home or with everyday activities.

During the week-long event Kenwood hosted a total of 84 children from seven schools across Leigh Park.

Children that took part in the workshops learnt about a healthy, balanced diet and the importance of fruit and vegetables in their daily diet. They then used Kenwood Chefs to make pizzas for their own balanced diet to cook and then take away, proving just how easy it is to choose the healthy option.

After this they got to work in teams to produce Smoothies in Kenwood Smoothie Makers before departing with a goody bag each.

FUTURE LOOKING BRIGHT FOR PARK PARADE The latest figures on high street shop occupancy don’t make for encouraging reading. However, there is an exception to the rule: one location in your community has spent the last six months adapting to change and is offering new and existing small businesses excellent opportunities to survive the crisis. That location is Leigh Park, and its success stories are partially down to Mark Smith, a local landlord that sensed an opportunity and took a chance to turn the fate of Park Parade around.

Mark, 47, admits his secret is not a complicated one: “I have been able to purchase the run down properties at decent prices. After a small amount of work I am able to pass on my savings to tenants in the form of massively reduced rents.” These rents are often less than half of what similar vacant retail units are demanding and as a sole investor, rather than a faceless company based miles away, Mark is able to support his tenants when required and can often be seen in the area.

Of course, Mark makes it clear that he is not the only reason behind the positive changes. “Without the local tenants and their customers this wouldn’t be a success story. This really is down to the community as a whole.”

The focus is now on the community to support and encourage the local retailers, as well as suggest any improvements that you would like to see in Park Parade. There is a Facebook page under the name “Leigh Park Traders Association” where feedback is welcomed and viewed by the local shopkeepers. Suggestions already put forward include: •

a market day, either fortnightly or monthly, specifically for locally produced and handmade items

Another independent trader opens in prospering precinct Only a few weeks ago, Carousel Toys & Gifts opened its doors to the people of Havant. As an independent trader, you may think that now isn’t the right time to open a new shop, but this isn’t a one off occurrence in Leigh Park.

Park Parade’s shop occupancy has been on the rise for the past year, many of which have been taken by new and expanding small local businesses. Things will shortly be looking even better for Leigh Park as Greywell Shopping Centre has new management to fill their vacant shops, and what used to be the old Netto store is in the process of being developed into several retail units.

Furthermore, an agreement has been made to bring a market day back to the Leigh Park precinct and new business owners are already in talks with local landlord Mark Smith about the opportunities available for aspiring entrepreneurs. If things continue to improve we could have one of the best, if not the best, regenerated high streets in the country.
