EMSWORTH CELEBRATES ST GEORGE’S DAY In keeping with tradition, local volunteers working with the Emsworth Businessmen’s Association organised another fine celebration parade in Emsworth’s St Peter’s Square, led by soldiers of the 12 Regiment Royal Artillery stationed at Thorney Island.

One venue saw 1440 visitors over one weekend Visitors came from around the World to enjoy work from over 150 local artists 45 local businesses adopted artists huge community success.

Emsworth certainly came alive with a splash of colour on the first weekend of the Emsworth Arts Trail. Over 150 artists at 77 local venues opened their doors to art over two weekends, bringing thousands of visitors into the town.

Artists on the Quay, a group of creative sailors and club members, put on an exhibition at Emsworth Slipper Sailing Club to showcase their work. Organisers David and Annette Evans, recorded over 1440 visitors to their venue over the two days.Although they were only open for the first weekend they managed to raise around £300 for their charity the Wheely Boat Trust through commission on sale and donations.The charity provides specially adapted boats suitable for taking disabled people in wheelchairs out sailing.

Artists welcomed visitors into their home studios, community spaces, halls, pubs and churches, where a wide variety of mediums and styles including painting, printmaking, photography, furniture making, weaving, woodturning, ceramics, jewellery and textile art were on display. Even knot lovers, young and old, were delighted to see the work of knot master Ken Yalden, pictured above passed his skills onto a potential future generation of knotters at Harbour Chandlers, in Emsworth Yacht Harbour during the trail.

The buzz surrounding this year’s Emsworth Arts Trail certainly spread throughout the south, if not the World, bringing visitors from near and far.

We were delighted to welcome a VIP guest to the Trail on Saturday 29th April; the Mayor of Havant, Councillor Faith Ponsonby. She visited artist Carol Price’s venue in Park Crescent to view her exhibition of new work, and also met some other visitors who had travelled all the way from Canada and Israel to enjoy the Emsworth Arts Trail.

“We’d liked to say a huge thank you to all our wonderful visitors; it’s their enthusiasm and support that help make it such a fantastic event,” commented Carol Price, Chairman of The Emsworth Arts Trail.“What’s special about our

trail is the way it brings local artists, residents and businesses together in an annual celebration of art, creating a real sense of vitality and community in the town. ”Forty-five Emsworth businesses adopted artists; their support really helped promote the trail. Space was provided in their shop windows and walls to showcase pieces of work. On many occasions great relationships are built, which can lead to more permanent exhibitions within shops, cafes and restaurants.

Carol goes on to explain;“Emsworth Arts Trail brings a real sense of community to the town.All the artists on the trail meet regularly during the planning stages, where new friends are often made.The involvement with local businesses provides vital help with the promotion of the event and our local residents often invite guest from far and wide to spend the weekend in Emsworth getting to know our wonderful Town.

They stop for a drink or buy a sandwich along the way, and see the fantastic creativity on show.

There’s something to interest everyone, even gardeners are catered for with some great private gardens to explore.

“We’d just like to thank all those who have taken part in what has been our largest ever arts trail.We hope that those who visited our venues enjoyed meeting our talented artists, and finding out about our materials, processes and inspirations. If you took a few art works home, we hope they will become things you treasure.We look forward to seeing you again next year,” she concludes.

Emsworth British Food Fortnight Launch Emsworth British Food Fortnight 2017 was launched with a TASTE event at Tuppenny Barn on 2nd June.

We were delighted to be joined Alexia Robinson, founder of Love British Food and British Food Fortnight and Olivier Blanc a Love British Food ‘Ambassador’. Since its foundation in 2014 the Emsworth British Food Fortnight has not only won National Awards but has become one of the most successful Food events of its type in the UK celebrating local food, local people and Emsworth itself. Plans are well advanced for this year’s Fortnight and the launch unveiled some of the key events as well as ticketing details. Showcasing was a range of local artisan producers and suppliers who haven taken part in the Emsworth Food Fortnight over the last few years and this is a great opportunity to meet them and hear the stories they have to tell including : Tuppenny Barn - Montezuma’s Chocolate Hambledon Vineyard - Fresh from the Boat Stansted Farm Shop - Jake’s Artisan Foods Harry’s Sausages - The Cold Pressed Oil

Rosemary Moon, local chef and food writer gave a cookery demonstration using ingredients from these producers, in essence producing a dish using local ingredients produced by local people for local people.

Johnathan Steventon-Kiy was contacted by the daughter of a man who had recently been diagnosed with Mesothelioma.

Help The Spring Celebrate Havant The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre is looking for local performers, community groups and food vendors to take part in Havant at Home, a free outdoor event celebrating Havant Borough and the reasons we all love to call it home!

Funding from the Big Lottery Fund’s Celebrate programme is helping The Spring work with the Havant community to hold this free event taking place in Havant Park, 12.00pm – 5.00pm on Saturday 29 July. Havant at Home will include a live circus act, a community stage with performers from across the borough, food and drink, community stalls, family activities and more.The event aims to showcase the best that Havant and the surrounding region has to offer, from the finest artistic talents and local produce, to the local groups and organisations working to support our communities.

CPRE Hampshire Countryside Awards 2017 – one month to go!

CRAFT BEERS - Enjoy your Local Ales

Like Coffee? Like Beer?

One of the biggest changes to our High Streets over the last 20 years has been the rise of the coffee shop. It was not that long ago that a request for a cup of coffee would be met with a rather dismal milky instant coffee, probably served in a cracked cup.

Standards have risen immeasurably and now one is faced with a bewildering choice of coffee drinks: expresso, latte, cappuccino, Americano, piccino and macchiato are just a few of the many coffee variations offered by local cafes.

Things are similar in the beer world. It used to be a choice between bitter, lager or perhaps stout. The rise of the craft brewery movement over the last 10 years has given us a vast choice of beers styles, old and new.

A couple of years ago I wrote an article for Postcode about Stouts and Porters explaining how this old style of dark beer was becoming popular again with small breweries now offer a stout or porter in their range of beers. I have noticed recently a new sub-species of beer arising, namely the coffee porter. This is simply a dark beer subtly flavoured with coffee. Many stouts and porters already have a complex caramel/chocolate/molasses taste to them so why the need to add even more flavour? It was American brewers who first came up with the idea of adding coffee to dark beer and there are now many different coffee flavoured stouts and porters on the market.

Here are a selection of coffee porters, stouts and bock beers which I have sampled recently: Colchester Brewery Coffee and Vanilla Double Drop Brazilian Porter 4.6% abv.

This beer pours a very dark brown with a freshly roasted coffee aroma. The taste is complex with molasses, coffee, vanilla and roasted malt coming through. The beer is brewed with barley, wheat, hops, coffee and vanilla pods. It is a dry, smooth drink which would go well with a roast dinner or a beef casserole. Colchester Brewery was founded

in 2012 in the Essex town They use the Double Drop system of brewing which involves extra fermentation tanks to ensure a clear, fully flavoured beer. They brew a large range of cask and bottled beers.

Northern Star Mocha Porter 5.9%

This porter pours nearly black and has a big foamy head which takes a while to dissipate. The aroma is burnt caramel but the taste is of very smooth milk coffee/chocolate/toffee. I think this beer would go well with a chocolate dessert. The beer is brewed by Northern Monk Brewery in Leeds and is made of barley, oats, lactose, cacao powder and coffees from Brazil, El Salvador and Sumatra. Northern Monk are based in a historic mill building in Leeds and were formed in 2013.

Kiuchi Brewery Hitachino Nest Japanese style Russian Imperial Expresso Stout 7% This exotic brew comes all the way from Japan. This country is best known for sake but beer has been brewed commercially in Japan since 1869. Japan has around 300 breweries and many export to the USA, Australia, Far East and Europe. Expresso Stout pours a very dark brown and has a freshly roasted coffee aroma. This is a smooth beer with a very pronounced coffee flavour in addition to malt/toffee/molasses. I would try this with a pork dish. Kiuchi were founded as Sake brewers back in 1823 and in 1996 they diversified in to beer

production. They produce a wide range of bottled beers including white, pale, stout, red rice and IPA. Tempest Brewing Red Eye Flight Mocha Porter 7.4% abv.

This is a very dark beer with a strong coffee aroma. The taste is complex with caramel, coffee, chocolate, roasted malts and freshly brewed coffee coming through.

The beer is made with GP, Munich, Chocolate and black malts together with oats and wheat. It is flavoured with Fazenda Pantano Brazilian coffee and American hops. This is a strong beer which might be best appreciated at the end of a meal, perhaps instead of a cup of coffee. Tempest Brewing were founded in 2010 and are based in Tweedbank in the Scottish Borders. They produce a wide range of boldly flavoured beers.

Maui Brewing Doppel Shot Double Bock with Maui Coffee 8.2% abv.

This beer has come all the way from Hawaii and offers a very different tasting experience. It pours a golden copper colour and the aroma is of coffee liqueur. The taste is rich and complex with chocolate, malts and coffee liqueur flavours prevalent. Bock is a style of beer first brewed in Germany.

Bocks are bottom fermented beers (like lagers) but are very malt forward in flavour.

At 8.2% abv. this is a big beer which is perhaps to strong to drink with a meal but would go down well as a nightcap or perhaps with a rich dessert. Maui Brewing are based in the town of Lahaina on the island of Maui, which is the 2nd largest of the Hawaiian Islands. They also produce a coconut porter, a dry hopped IPA and a Helles style lager.

Brains (Aldi/Great British Brewing) Spill the Beans Coffee Porter 4.4% This beer pours dark brown and has a cocoa/coffee/roasted malt aroma. The taste is rather disappointing, reminding me of stewed filter coffee with perhaps a dash of crème de cacao liqueur chucked in. I think the brewers need to revisit the recipe,

adjust the malt and find some better quality coffee to flavour the beer. Brains are a Cardiff brewery established in 1882 and are still family owned. They produce a wide range of cask and bottled beers which are widely available in Wales, the Midlands and the West Country.

Friends of Havant Cemeteries win National Friends of Havant Cemeteries have Lottery support received £9,900 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project: to enhance the environment and share the heritage of our local cemeteries by adding an information board, new gates and a bench to the historic Dissenters’ Cemetery and a further information board at the junction of New Lane and Eastern Road, Havant. Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, the project focuses on the social history of the area, and its wildlife, both flora and fauna.

The group intends that the gates (replacing

old gates, one of which was stolen), information boards and bench at the entrance to a previously derelict area will change attitudes and draw attention to an historically important area now being sensitively managed.

In our regular volunteer sessions we are also making headstones safely accessible through regular maintenance and reinstating of old pathways visible in 19th century maps. Later on in the project the group will be running an open day, in conjunction with the Spring Arts and Heritage Centre, to invite people into the cemetery for guided walks, a butterfly count and photography sessions. Support will also be

provided for researchers to investigate family histories from inscriptions on headstones.

Commenting on the award, Christopher Evans, chairperson, said “We, the Friends of Havant Cemeteries (FoHC) are delighted to announce that we have been awarded a Heritage Lottery Grant which will enable us to make improvements to the historic Dissenters Cemetery and the New Lane Cemetery. All of this is designed to make the area more welcoming, and encourage local residents and visitors alike to explore the cemeteries, which provide a wealth of social history and are a haven for wildlife.”

SCALEXTRIC CELEBRATED The Spring premièred a film recently celebrating history of the iconic toy Scalextric filmed with the help of local students from Trosnant School and local Havant people who worked in Fred Francis’ factory.

The famous racing game was manufactured in Havant for more than a decade after being invented by toy maker Fred Francis, who moved his Minimodels factory from Mill Hill to Hampshire in 1954. Two years later, he experimented with electrifying his tinplate toy cars and the first Scalextric sets arrived in shops in 1957.

Manufactured at Minimodels in New Lane, the toy was an instant success and its popularity led to the development of a much larger Minimodels factory in Fulflood Road, Leigh Park. Minimodels was a major employer from 1961 until the factory’s closure in 1970, at which time it employed 1,200 people.

Working with local people and enthusiasts The Spring has researched and collected stories for the film and book.

an exciting open day in October which included an 8 track Scalextric, ladies from the factory talking about their experiences and a good day was had by all 500 participants.

Trustee Steve Murray said: “As we mark the 60th anniversary of the brand

appearing in shops, we are delighted to be able to record Havant’s key role in its international success and hope that by celebrating the past, we can promote civic pride in the present”.

The workers’ stories feature in a book and the documentary film.

Modern Remedy for Ancient Farm On a lovely spring day in May, beautiful rolling hills and countryside were the stunning backdrop for a group of 10 willing volunteers to undertake a variety of tasks at Butser Ancient Farm.

Volunteers from Pfizer a large business based in Havant, took time out of their working day to help out at the archaeological site. One group worked tirelessly loading and carrying wheelbarrows full of flint used for carving from one end of the site to the other.The other group had the task of sorting a large pile of Roman tesserae.

Pfizer take part in monthly volunteering events around the Havant area organised by Community First, which have included conservation, gardening, decorating and helping out at a food bank.

For readers who are self employed or have additional earnings, for example rental income from a property you let out, the annual task of completing a tax return will be a familiar one.

Self assessment has been around for the past 20 years but is now about to undergo a complete transformation as part of HMRC’s Making Tax Digital (MTD) plans. Its aim is to encourage digital record keeping to reduce errors and make tax administration more efficient and easier for taxpayers through the implementation of a fully digital tax system.

It will also mean the end of the annual tax return as this will be replaced with the requirement to file income and expenses quarterly via the new digital service.

For individuals, the government intends to phase out self assessment by 2020. The personal tax account system is already live and can be used to access a range of HMRC services.

Small businesses and landlords that have an annual turnover below the VAT threshold (£85,000) have until April 2019 before they are required to keep digital records and send HMRC quarterly updates.

HMRC have yet to provide full details on how the scheme will be implemented and, as accountants, we will be carefully following developments over the coming months.

Don’t stop Wining Cool Reds

We have finally had some decent sunny weather (hopefully there is more to come), to justify dusting off the BBQ’s and enjoy those charred sausages and chicken wings (or is that just my BBQ cooking?).

During these times sales of rosé wines go through the roof while we enjoy a large, chilled glass out in the garden and reds seem to be just too heavy to be consumed on a hot, lazy Sunday afternoon.

While we will never tire of rosé wine, we don’t have to forget about reds while the sun is out as some are perfect for chilling down and make a great change.

The thing to remember is the lighter the red the better. Reds with loads of fruit and soft tannins cope better with chilling than the full bodied, heavy numbers. Stick to grapes such as Pinot Noir, Gamay (reds from the Beaujolais region are made from this beauty) and some lighter Cabernet Sauvignon’s from California and other new world regions.

Grenache is another fruity favourite and can be a fantastic partner to cold dishes on a hot day. Don’t over chill the wine as this can strip any flavours and aromas and don’t put ice cubes in the glass. This will water the wine down adding a thin, dull character.

Female Coaches Connect, Share and Develop

More than 75 female coaches, guests and speakers attended the first ever Female Coaching Conference at Surrey Sports Park, England on Saturday 29 April. The conference was open to all sports, all levels and all nationalities and gave coaches attending the chance to connect, share and develop together – raising the profile of female coaches.

Working in partnership with the Female Coaching Network (FCN), Project 500: More Women, Better Coaching offered female coaches the opportunity to hear from Olympic Gold Medal winning hockey coach Karen Brown and one of the first four female coaches to gain the Football Pro-licence, Lois Fiddler.

Karen spoke passionately about the importance of self-reflection for players, coaches and support staff whilst Lois spoke openly about her journey in football and her lasting comment to the conference was ‘feel the fear and do it anyway’.

The day included workshops delivered by the FCN on speed development,

postural analysis, mobility for warm ups and the online world. The conference ended with a panel discussion by 5 Project 500 coaches, who shared their experiences and took questions from the room.

The conference provided a fantastic networking opportunity and despite closing at 5pm coaches were still networking with each other two hours later.

Delegates were invited to ‘keep connected’ through a series of webinars to build upon conference topics, online platforms, #womenswednesday discussions and informal coaching chit chat sessions in their local area.

was overwhelmingly positive and social media activity was awash with comments using the hash-tag #FemaleCoach2017.

‘I enjoyed the workshops and loved talking to other sports/females about coaching and experiences’ ‘Reassuring to have such honest talks from female coaches in sport, it was great to have the opportunity to learn, interact and network’ ‘Great event, please do more… can we have two days next year?’

The day was a great celebration for women’s coaching and the team hope to continue supporting female coaches in making this an annual event.

A SEAMAN ON THE RUN An abridged three part version of PO9 resident George Morralee’s new autobiography Part 2: The story continues…

In January 1950 I joined HMS Agincourt, a Battle class destroyer of the Second World War, the real thing. Each time I joined a ship for the first time I would feel a bit queasy for three or four days. Anyway, after that I would settle down and be OK. Our jobs including keeping watches, lifebuoy sentry duty on the quarter deck (in case anyone fell overboard), painting and cleaning and polishing all the brass-work.

One of the surprising things when we first went on board and went down to the crew's mess was to see sailors knitting and embroidering in their spare time. It is not over-stating the fact to say we made friends for life and there was a level of mutual trust that you don't often find in life.

It was while I was on HMS Agincourt that I set foot on foreign soil for the first time. This was to run up to the top of the 'Rock' - the 426 metre (1,398ft) high limestone pile that dominates the territory - and to run back down (there's a similar tradition in Hong Kong). I just sort of got on with it and was quite happy with the way they ran things.

It was around this time that I came to an important personal decision. Nevertheless my decision stood me in good stead in the years to come.

In February 1951 I found myself in HMS Vernon, another shore training station to which I was destined to return many times during my naval service. A month later, in December 1951, I was a member of ship's company of HMS Saintes, marching down Queens Street, Portsmouth.

The happiest time of my naval career was spent aboard this destroyer. All ships would enter the creek going astern - a rare manoeuvre and a real test of a commanding officer's skill.

During our time on Saintes we visited most of the major ports in the Med, which was great. As the country's new Queen, she immediately prepared to return home, travelling by air.

At the time HMS Agincourt was alongside in Tobruk, Libya.We turned to follow the course and the captain put us on top of the wave where it was calmer.

Eventually we returned to Malta where we had a six-week refit.

I really enjoyed that time as part of the Navy's Mediterranean fleet.Yes, HMS Saintes was the ship for me.

Back home from Malta in May 1954 I once again went to HMS Vernon. I was already qualified in torpedo anti-submarine skills, now I hoped to be up-graded to Underwater Weapons Rating second-class, and after that, of course, there was first-class rating.

At the end of that year I joined the minelayer HMS Plover as a leading seaman. And a consequence it had never been decommissioned and (after Nelson's 'Victory') must have been the longest-serving RN ship in commission.

Anyway we operated out of Portsmouth and played our part in naval exercises. Our job was to lay dummy mines for other ships to locate.

My next ship was HMS Urchin based in

Northern Ireland and part of the Derry Squadron. From that I went to HMS Adamant, another submarine depot ship, but this time I was based in Wemyss Bay, at Rothsay in Scotland, where submarines would come alongside us to be resupplied before going off down the Clyde.

I left HMS Adamant in 1957. My next ship was HMS Forth which was in Malta.

But this time in Malta belongs in the next chapter, because that's where I spent a part of my early married life.

Towards the end of my career in the Navy, in 1961, I was promoted to Acting Petty Officer. Other important developments that year included the first manned space flight, the first betting shops, the Berlin Wall was erected and Britain applied to join the EEC. At the time I was aboard the frigate HMS Loch Lomond patrolling the Persian Gulf. Life in the Gulf was certainly cheap in those days.

In 1962 I was back at HMS Vernon once again, this time to qualify as a firstclass weapons rating. We then had the job of retrieving them.

Well, someone had to do it.

The full tally of ships I served on were: HMS Maidstone (1949), HMS Agincourt (1950), HMS Saintes (1951), HMS Plover (1954), HMS Urchin (1955 and 1963), HMS Adamant (1956), HMS Forth (1957), HMS Loch Lomond (1961), HMS Relentless (1963) and HMS Cleopatra (1968).

I first got married in 1956. And it was at one Nurses' Ball that I met Ann. By the time I was sent off to Malta to join HMS Forth in 1957 Ann was expecting our first child, Susan. We lived on Malta for the next two-and-a half-years.

It was not the first time Ann had lived in service quarters abroad. Sadly Ann died on April 20, 2014.

When the divorce went through I was back at HMS Vernon again. I remained unattached for several years, and then I remet Wendy and we married in 1996, long after I'd left the Navy.

We had been running into one another for quite a time as we were both involved in the church. …to be concluded…

Havant & Waterlooville FC Regain National League Status as Champions of the Ryman Football League

Ryman Premier League Champions 2016-17 Our sports readers will no doubt want to congratulate the Hawks and everyone connected to the football club for their success in winning the Ryman Premier League championship for the 2016/17 season.

Lee Bradbury, Hawks manager since October 2012, has guided the Club to an immediate return to the Vanarama National League. This after finishing the 2016/17 as Premier League Champions of the Ryman Football League. Sports correspondent Tim Randall has obtained Bradbury’s thoughts on the successful campaign and his plans for the team in the season ahead in the Vanarama National League South.

An historic season for the Hawks went right down to the last few minutes of the season before they were crowned league champions. Reflecting on the achievement after the dust had settled, Lee Bradbury said 'Winning the Ryman Premier League and achieving an immediate return to the National League is just so big for everyone at the club. I'm especially pleased for the supporters, the board, the volunteers, the staff and obviously, the players.’ He added, ‘When a side gets promoted it’s a big team effort from everyone. We certainly had that this season, everyone just kept pulling together. Even when we had a few indifferent results everyone stayed together, stayed strong and got us what we felt we had earned and deserved. I am just so pleased that we have bounced back. It is so difficult when you go down to come straight back up the next season. So, to do it is a fantastic achievement for us'.

Paying tribute to the support the fans gave to the team Bradbury said, 'the penultimate game of the season against Bognor at the Westleigh was amazing. After that win, we knew at the crucial finale at Kingstonian that we had a couple of coach loads of fans behind us for the match. We also knew, many other fans had made their own way there by train and car. Just at the

time we most needed them most, the fans were immense. They made a great noise to provide a great atmosphere on a special day for all concerned at the Club. It was just such a big relief at the final whistle that we had done what we'd set out to achieve at the beginning of the season.’

Bradbury added ‘Winning the league was always my focus. Right from the pre-season matches I imparted this to the lads.

Anything less was unacceptable. They lived up to it, they dealt with it. I think throughout the season we had a really close- knit group of players, as well as all the people behind the scenes and that's why we were so successful this year.’

The Manager now has started to focus on next season. He said ‘For me, the hard work of preparing for next season has already started. I need to cement some of the players down and try to improve the team so we are a force in the higher league next season. First, I have been talking to players to get them to commit their futures to the club. At the same time, I'm looking to strengthen the squad. So, the work continues apace. When I look at teams like Poole Town and Hungerford who both went up in the 2015/16 season, this season one was in the play offs and the other just outside in 6th position. That must be our aim next year. We must try to make the play offs. I feel with the group we have and with a few additions we can be a force to be reckoned with next season'.

Finally, Lee speaking about how he personally felt about the promotion and his future as Manager of Hawks said, 'I've only been in management 6 years and prior to this season have never won the league. To win any league is a big achievement. This year we knew we were in a very competitive league, with some very strong sides. We stayed strong throughout and came out as deserved champions. It has been a great season for me and know it’s time to do it all again at the next level. At

this point I can tell your readers, if they have not yet heard, that I have been able to conclude a major signing for next season Matt Tubbs.’

'Matt is a big signing for us. He brings vast experience with the level he has played at. The last time he played at this level he won the then Conference South with Salisbury. Hopefully that's a good omen for us. I know I'm bringing in a player that if he's played to his strengths he will score goals.

He likes to play off the target man and play in a team that crosses the ball. We have both of those at the club, I also think he will raise the standards of people around him and with it the team’s expectations. I think he has that bit of nouse and experience and I feel he can score a lot of goals at this level.

A good thing for me is that it's not about money for him; it’s about him joining a club that wants to go forwards, has momentum and plays a good style of football. Matt had a lot of offers to play in higher leagues, for considerably more money. So, it is a great coup for us to land him. I really look forward to him coming in. He’s a great addition to the squad.’

Talking further about the squad for next season Bradbury revealed that Brian Stock has signed a 1 year extension to his contract. He said, ‘It’s good to keep the club captain here, he is a very influential player on and off the pitch. He really drives the standards of the players every week and so, is a great signing for us.’

The Hawks’ busy boss has already secured the following key members of his squad with two-year contract extensions: • Rory Williams – 2016/17 player of the year, • Mike Carter - 'The Enforcer' • Bradley Tarbuck - a talented up and coming youngster, and • Ed Harris - back at his best after a bad injury which had kept him out for a season.

Iron Man Challenge Dee Williams, a cyclist from Havant finds conversation with the 'Iron Men' on the Centurion Way between Chichester and West Dean to be a bit of a challenge.

The cycle club ride regularly every week, and often use the Centurion way, either full length, or for parts of it as their destination requires.

The Iron Men are a sculpture entitled Chichester Road Gang set alongside a representation of a Roman Amphitheatre on the site of an old gravel pit, and all on the site of what was once a junction between two Roman Roads about 2000 years ago.

The name of Centurion Way pays respect to this ancient Roman heritage although it is built along the line of the old Railway line from Chichester to Midhurst.This fell into disuse after the end of passenger traffic although it continued for a while carrying vegetables before final closure.

Only the section between Chichester and West Dean was converted for use by cyclists and pedestrians, but the rest of the route is being considered subject to land owners permissions and the protection of bats that have taken occupation of some of the tunnels. ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Regarding other new signings, the Hawks boss said: 'I am always looking to improve the team. It's my job to make sure we are a force to be reckoned with next season. So, if players go I will look to replace them with stronger players. We don't want to go up just looking to be comfortable. We want to be a strong side.

With the players we've got and with new players coming in I'm sure we will have the strength we need.’

The Hawks finished an already very successful season under the floodlights of Fratton Park on Tuesday 23 May. They did the double with victory over Petersfield Town to regain the Portsmouth Senior Cup. The Hawks proved far too strong for the Rams as they cruised to a 5-0 win over the Southern League outfit. The goals came from an Alfie Rutherford hat-trick and a James Prior brace.

JOHN LEWIS CUSTOMERS DONATE £870 TO QA REHAB CENTRE Portsmouth Hospitals Charity, based at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham has received £870 from the John Lewis Knight and Lee store in Southsea as part of their Community Matters scheme.

Thank you to all of the customers who put their green token in the community matters box throughout the months of November, December and January, as the money raised will be put towards an important Neuro arm de-weighter for patients recovering from a stroke or brain injury.

The machine, which costs £3,000, will be for Queen Alexandra Hospital’s Rehabilitation Centre and will be used by Physiotherapists to teach patients how to use their shoulders and arms again.

Hayley King, Physiotherapist at QA Hospital describes why her team are fundraising. She said, “We are the Neuro Rehab

team at Queen Alexandra Hospital and we are raising money for specialist therapy equipment for our patients to use as part of their rehabilitation. This can have a devastating impact on people's quality of life, impacting on their ability to move, engage with their daily activities, work, and fulfil their role within their families and communities.

Our current fund-raising goal is to raise money for a piece of equipment called the ‘SaeboMAS’. It is a dynamic mobile arm support that allows people who have arm weakness as a result of a brain injury or stroke to exercise their weak arm using zero gravity.

This will enable people to start moving and exercising sooner whilst in hospital which is proven to improve their abilities later in life as they recover from their brain injury or stroke. Our patients will benefit a

great deal from being able to use this specialist piece of equipment as part of their rehabilitation.”

The John Lewis Community Matters Scheme has been running for the past 4 years, with local charities benefiting from the scheme every few months.

Life at Cat & Rabbit Rescue Centre gets busier for us felines, not sure what the rabbits and guinea pigs do except for a bit of gardening! The main news this month is that Monique & Nigel who set up Cat & Rabbit in 1986 are retiring. So the Trustees have lots to do to ensure all us pusscats, rabs and guineas are looked after properly.

We have lovely new lady Lilly who is organizing the fund raising and the volunteers to make sure we have lots of money coming in to keep us in the manner to which we are accustomed!!

Lilly with help from Pamela is very busy organizing the Summer Fayre on Sunday 13th August 11-4pm.This is our biggest fund raising

event, and we need lots of things in particular bottles for the bottle stall which makes oodles of money, wine is very popular, but any bottles as long as it is in date. If you would like to donate some, please drop it off at our shops (details on www.crrc.co.uk).

They say the countryside is quiet, but the trees full of crows are very noisy making their nests and feeding their young.Their nests are luxurious as they are lined with white fur from Holly & Daisy the 2 rescued ponies.

Must go now as lots of things to do, and need to catch up on my sleep, unbelievably we had a fox come into our garden room the other night, but Lewis, my tabby & white mate chased it away!

The fashion show I told you about last time has been postponed until later in the year.This gives me a chance to practice my cat walk.We will send out the revised date as soon as we can.

I would like to add a huge thanks to Monique and Nigel without them my friends and I would have had nowhere to go.We will miss them.

KF81-11 & KM82-11 Pets of the Month

For July we would like you to meet two very sweet cats who are at the centre for the second time.A brother and sister who would like to go as a pair.

KF81-11 has a small black patch on her head and her brother KM82-11. They are 6 years old with lovely long fur that does need brushing.They originally came to the Centre as kittens in 2011 finding a home before being returned in January 2017 due to the owners being allergic.They are a little bit nervous of people and do not walk up to you but they like being tickled once they get to know you.They would love to find a quiet home with someone who will give them time to settle into a new home.They would prefer not to live with young children. If you think you can offer this lovely family the new home they so desperately deserve, please do not hesitate to contact us here at the Centre.

As the nicer weather is here and people are back on the golf course we are seeing a lot of people who suffer with golfers elbow (pain on inside of the elbow) in our clinic; golfers, weight lifters, office workers, builders, and those who are spending time in their gardens are a few people who are effected by golfers elbow.

Most people with this problem have some pain when shaking hands, turning the steering wheel of a car, picking up a cup, opening a jar and carrying shopping.

Golfers elbow, also known as medial epicondylitis is an overuse injury which occurs where the tendon which flexes (bends) the wrist attaches to the inside of the elbow.

The best treatment for golfers elbow is hands on soft tissue release, massage, mobilisation plus strengthening exercises.

Celebration of Volunteering On Thursday 25th May, volunteers across Havant Borough came together to be recognised for their outstanding commitment to volunteering. The event was organised by Community First’s Volunteer Service in partnership with Havant Borough Council. Janet Duggan,Volunteer Service Manager at Community First, said: “This year we had six award categories with many nominations for each category. It was incredibly difficult to select three winners for each category as all the nominations we received were worthy of an award. It was so inspiring to hear about all the unsung heroes in our community, working so tirelessly for their charities and community groups. We would like to take this opportunity to thank every volunteer in Havant and recognise the contribution you make to the community.”

The event took place at Langstone Technology Park and was attended by the new Mayor of Havant, Cllr Elaine Shimbart, who presented the awards. The youngest award winner was Jasmine Bone from Park Community School through to the oldest, Jean Kelly, 87 years, from Angel Radio. Jean remarked: “I was amazed to have won the Unsung Hero Award which recognises volunteering in the face of adversity. I have been a volunteer at Angel Radio for 14 years and after losing my husband became socially isolated. Volunteering has helped me to regain my confidence and given me a

The RSPCA Flag Collection Days on 26th and 27th May were most successful and the sum of £685 was raised for The Stubbington Ark Animal Shelter. Thank you very much to all who showed their support and donated so generously. It is truly appreciated.

Grateful appreciation also to No 1 Shop in Mengham, to Hayling Hardware, the Coop Supermarket in Elm Grove, Co-op Food in Selsmore Road and Lloyds Pharmacy in West Town. These businesses welcomed our volunteers to stand outside their shops with their blue collection tins.

As ever, many thanks to The News Boutique in Mengham, to Daron Ford Motors and Country Pets in Rails Lane.

They very kindly permitted us to set up a stall and collection on their premises.

Our collector in West Town was most surprised when a young man from Honduras handed over a couple of heavy bags

containing loose change which amounted to £27. The sight of the blue collection tin made a lovely lady dash to her car and produce all the small change she could find worth £14. An extra special thank you to both of them.

The Stubbington Ark takes in, treats, resocialises and re-homes animals rescued by RSPCA inspectors and members of the public. The Ark is entirely self-funded and independent from RSPCA Headquarters.

Therefore, the shelter with its many residents relies solely on donations and legacies.Your support is vital and very much appreciated.

Please join us for our next coffee morning on Saturday 29th July, at the United Reformed Church in Hollow Lane from 10am to noon. Tea, coffee, bacon butties and cakes will be served; entry is free and there will be lots of table top items for sale and the customary raffle with lots of prizes.

HERE COMES SUMMER Woodmancote is a sleepy hamlet set in the beautiful West Sussex border countryside about 2 miles north-east of Emsworth. The Woodmancote is a busy 150 seater Restaurant and Free House with cosy and intimate interiors. They offer a very comprehensive menu, wide choice of quality wines, spirits and beers and have just launched their Summer Menu - it has 11 starters, 14 mains plus grills and salads – what a choice! Plenty of parking with outside seating and easy access for disabled as well.

I visited with my partner one Monday lunchtime and the restaurant was busy – excellent sign of good food I thought.

I ordered crispy whitebait served with hunks of fresh bread and tartar sauce and my partner choose Crab Cakes served with a chilli dip – both delicious and well cooked. For the main course we selected Seafood Linguine with prawns, salmon and

haddock in a tomato and herb sauce with garlic ciabatta and Pan Fried Venison served with sauté potatoes, seasonal vegetables with a red wine jus.

All our food was extremely fresh and tasty – the portions were generous as well. We chose their wine of the month – Gouleyant – a deeply fragrant wine from South West France. The menu offers a range of vegetarian/vegan meals as well and the manager Terry said, “if you have any dietary requests we are happy to advise and help”.

A comprehensive range of sweets was on the menu – we chose a selection of ice creams and finished with freshly made coffee.

What a lovely meal matched by the summery conditions outside. It is difficult to imagine that this idyllic rural location is only 5 miles from Havant - I would thoroughly recommend you visit this establishment and please mention you read this article in Postcode Newspapers.

What’s on Havant Camera Club The Club reached the end of its winter season of talks and competitions, and will soon be into the summer season, when we have organised visits for photography.

We shall be going to Titchfield Abbey and to a private Nature Reserve amongst other outings. Advice will be available on the day!

AirACES Monday 24th July 1900 for 1930 ‘The History of British Airways and the Speedbird Centre’ – Jim Davies Jim Davies will tell the fascinating story of British Airways and its heritage. Although BA was only created in 1974 by the merger of BEA & BOAC, the airline can trace its roots through its various predecessor airlines to the first international departure from Hounslow Heath to Paris Le Bourget on 25th August 1919, a flight operated by Aircraft Transport & Travel Ltd.

In celebration of its proud history, the airline now has its own Heritage Centre – dubbed the Speedbird Centre – at its headquarters at Waterside, just North of Heathrow.

Havant Light Opera Able Seaman Thwarts First Lord of the Admiralty!

Havant Light Opera to present HMS PINAFORE. This satirical, witty, rollicking tale of love set on a Portsmouth warship was first performed in 1878; it was the first blockbuster hit from the remarkable partnership between Gilbert & Sullivan.

The opera's gentle satire builds on a theme of love between members of different social classes.

The opera also pokes good-natured fun at the Royal Navy, parliamentary politics and the rise of unqualified people to positions of authority. In particular there is a brazen satire on the career of W. H. Smith, who was M.P. for Westminster from 1868 to 1885. He had risen from a newsagent to be head of the Admiralty as First Lord, a post offered to him by Disraeli, and which he held from 1877 to 1880.

The First Lord of the Admiralty intends to marry the Captain’s daughter, but she has other ideas, and is intent on eloping with a humble sailor.

The Captain himself fancies a local supply boat woman. Fear not; it all works out at the end!

P&I CELEBRATE FACTORY OPENING On Friday 26th May, P&I celebrated the official opening of their new purpose built premises in Harts Farm Way, Havant.The P&I team were joined by customers, suppliers, family and friends, along with Alan Mak MP for Havant performing the official opening duties as guest of honour.

Park Community School news

School investing in its ‘much more than’ A rock based local radio station has joined forces with a popular school in Havant. ‘The Flash’ radio station has signed an agreement with Park Community School which will give the not for profit broadcasters a new home and create exciting opportunities for the school and its students.

The station's programmes have been broadcast from a portacabin located at a public house in Havant. Station founder & Managing Director, Martin Kirby, said 'We had great times at The Curlew but had outgrown our surroundings. The pub's future was also in doubt and while searching for a new home one of our volunteer presenters put me in touch with the school. On my first visit I was instantly inspired by the school's approach and the modern facilities it offers its students and community, so it soon became obvious that we could be of benefit to each other".

The Flash will be broadcasting from The Apex Centre in Havant, which is leased by Park Community School to provide practical skills based learning for students from Park and other schools. The Flash radio will also offer students a chance to learn media skills and opportunities to assist in producing broadcasts. A monthly programme to promote the talents of students and parents at the school is also planned.

Christopher Anders, Headteacher said "This opens up vast opportunities for our students in gaining real life' broadcasting experience by producing programmes and features on the station".

The Flash is available on DAB radios broadcasting to the Portsmouth area and via its website www.theflashonair.co.uk.

With over 200 guests to cater for, Charnade Ebbage and Dave Cottingham were in need of a large venue to hold their wedding reception.

As ex-students of Park Community School they were delighted when they discovered that they could hold their reception at the school in its lavishly decorated sports hall Newly-wed Charnade said “we were both so happy with everything that Park Community School has done. It was a pleasure to have it at the school where I went, it really did look amazing. I felt as though I was in a fairy tale and would definitely recommend it for a wedding venue. We had so many lovely comments about how beautiful it looked! Thank you all so much, we really can’t thank you enough”.

Like most things in life, it's a learning curve. Over the years people have asked me the best way to learn to play guitar. No easy way but practice and sticking with it!!

Everybody is different, some people struggle others will pick it up easy, but it still requires time for practice and sticking with it.

Many complain at the cost of lessons, today there is the Internet, stacks of sites

with information like lessons, technique most are free, plus Youtube. Which explains why the sale of tutor books have dropped like a lead weight!

Another easy way of learning and meeting other player's are Open Mic nights. Not so easy to find as so many Public Houses who hosted and supported live music have closed down, but they are still held at various venues over the

month. A great place to learn and improve technique, see lots of different instruments and equipment in use, talk to other players, old and new. You don't have to play yourself just watch and enjoy, all for the price of a few pints and a packet of pork scratchings.

Postcode Publications The Hayling/Gorron Twinning exchange

Hayling Island was officially twinned with Gorron, in Mayenne, France, in 1998. Every year there is an exchange visit across the Channel to spend a weekend renewing our acquaintances with families that we have become friends with over the years.

This year we hosted a group of 37 Gorronnaises, including families with 6 children aged between 4-7 years old, and for some it was their first visit to England. It has become our tradition to include culture and English customs during the visit! This year we went to the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu. There was a guided tour of the gatehouse which aroused much interest in the history of the Montagu family and all of the French connections therein. It was a tricky thing to try to explain the English pronunciation of Beaulieu and caused much amusement generally. After lunching in the Domus, we visited the motor museum with its vast and varied collection of rare and unique cars. After leaving Beaulieu our Gorron guests had the wonderful surprise of seeing ponies trotting along the road leading our coach homeward through the New Forest.

Other highlights included a gala dinner

and dance at the Hayling Community Centre, attended by the Mayor of Havant Cllr. Faith Ponsonby and her consort Mr Michael Ponsonby. The Mayor of Gorron, Jean-Marc Allain presented a French hydrangea that had been specially created in Gorron and received an etched glass plaque on behalf of Havant Borough Council.

The final day was 1st May and departure loomed fast. Everyone boarded Bob Haddock's Seaside train at Beachlands, and then we were off to say our final farewells and present gifts, as has always been our custom, at the Lifeboat Inn. The children were happy to receive a Hayling Island teddy to remember their adventure in England.

Hayley put on a wonderful buffet, but then it was really time for those four kisses each and off to Portsmouth to board the 'Normandie' ferry to Ouistreham, and the 120 km drive back to Gorron.

We heard the crossing was choppy but they are now safely home, ready to return to Hayling next year on the weekend of 5th May to celebrate 20 years of twinning with Hayling Island.

Tree Wardens Wanted for Hayling Island Havant Borough Tree Wardens are looking for people who live on Hayling Island to become tree wardens. Tree wardens are volunteers who gather information about their local trees, get involved in local tree matters and encourage local practical projects related to trees and woods.

The Tree Warden Scheme is a national initiative launched in 1990 by The Tree Council to enable people to play an active role in conserving and enhancing their local trees and woods. The Tree Council is the tree campaigning charity, an umbrella body for over 150 UK organisations working together to promote the importance of trees within the changing environment.Working together: • for more trees, of the right kind in the right places; • for better care for all trees, of all ages and; • to inspire effective action for trees • Its goal is to make “Trees matter to everyone”.

Trees are a precious part of our natural heritage and we need to take action now if future generations are to enjoy the beauty and variety of our landscapes.

trees and hedges in local schools, woodlands and open spaces. We have advised developers and with the help of other local organisations, have planted thousands of trees. Tree Wardens do not need to be tree experts; training and support will be given.

Many of us enjoy the sensation of sun on our skin. We feel happier, more energised and healthier when we’re sun-kissed.

However, before we expose ourselves to those UV rays we need to make sure we’re protecting our skin.

Who’s at risk?

Everyone. People with fairer skins are more likely to suffer damage from sun exposure but even people with darker skins need to take measures to protect themselves. Skins that have been burnt before, even in childhood, will be particularly sensitive to exposure.

Protect yourself Sunscreen The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a measure of a sunscreen's ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin. The higher the SPF, the higher percentage of protection against UVB rays.

Sunscreen works best once absorbed so apply it around 20 minutes before heading outdoors and reapply regularly (every two hours).

Cover up Hats can protect the scalp, ears and hairline and shade the eyes from sunlight.

Tightly-woven clothing helps deflect UV rays better than thin cotton.

Sunglasses Plastic lenses that offer 100% UV protection are the best choice. Sunglasses prevent the risk of cataracts in later life and also protect the delicate skin around the eye area.

Avoid midday sun The sun’s rays are strongest between around 10.30am and 3.30pm so avoid being exposed during this time. If you are outdoors cover up, apply sunscreen and try and stay in the shade where possible.

Know Your Skin “Changes to a mole or freckle can be a sign of skin cancer, which is why it's so important to see your doctor straight away. Early detection makes it easier to treat.” – nhs.uk Checking your skin You should check your skin every few months for any new moles that develop or any changes to existing moles.Amole can change in weeks or months.

Things to look for include: • Uneven colouring • Moles with an uneven or ragged edge • Bleeding, itching, red, inflamed (swollen) or crusty moles • Moles that get a lot bigger A helpful way to remember what to look for is to use the ABCDE method.

Asymmetry: A normal, healthy mole is usually rounded because it grows evenly. This means it is symmetrical, with one side a mirror image of the other. The picture shows a melanoma that looks like it has grown at an uneven rate and is asymmetrical.

Border: Melanomas often have ragged or blurred borders or edges. Normal, healthy moles tend to be much rounder, with smooth, clearly defined borders. The picture shows two examples of melanomas with ragged, blurred borders.

Colour: A normal mole usually has one uniform colour, whereas melanomas are often uneven in colour. As the picture shows, a melanoma can have two or three shades of brown or black, or varying shades of red and pink. The darkening of a mole is a sign that it is possibly becoming cancerous.

Diameter: Melanomas are usually larger than 6mm or 1/4 inch (approximately the width of a pencil). But this is not a sure sign of malignant melanoma. A cancerous mole can be smaller than this, and a perfectly healthy mole can be larger.

Elevation or Enlargement: A melanoma will often change in size, shape and colour over time, and may become raised above the skin’s surface. Inflammation or swelling is another sign that you need to see your GP for a check-up. The original mole often remains the same size, while an area around or under it appears to spread or swell. Any new symptoms – such as bleeding, itching or crusting – may also be caused by melanoma.
