Emsworth Life ONE Day Calendar – Released The Emsworth Business Association is delighted to announce the release of the Emsworth Life ONE Day Calendar 2017. ‘Emsworth Life – ONE day’ was a monthly photographic competition open to everyone, which aimed to celebrate Emsworth and its wonderful sense of place and community. Capturing Emsworth, its heritage, its people and its day-to-day life. Over the last 12 months, local people have entered 100’s of photographs of Emsworth Life. Each month an independent panel of Judges selected a wining entry, the winner received a bottle of Hambledon Classic Cuvée as well as being the official picture of the month in question for the Calendar. They are priced at £9 each and as well as the winning photographs, the calendars have a listing of community events for 2017. Courts permission required before applying for a warrant if a Suspended Possession Order is breached

Report on my work locally and in Westminster I hope readers enjoyed the festive season looking forward to 2017 with optimism.

In the run-up to Christmas I was delighted to support our local shops on Small Business Saturday. I visited small businesses across the constituency.

Coming from a family of high street shop owners myself I know first-hand the importance of these firms in building a thriving economy. So, in Westminster, I’ve backed a range of measures to make it easier for small businesses to set up and thrive including a cut in corporation tax, help with business rates and support for apprenticeships. Let’s keep backing our local shops by using them.

I’m also keen to showcase our area to a national audience, so it was great to be able to welcome BBC Radio 4 to the Leigh Park Working Men’s Club to talk about the technological changes that were highlighted

in a recent report I wrote about how technology is changing the workplace. Our area can be a national leader in areas like 3D printing which will create the jobs of the future.

Thanks to the more than 1,000 people who came to Hayling Island Community Centre in October for my first ever Havant Older Persons’ Information Fair. It was a big success with over 40 local charities, businesses and community groups engaging with older people and their families.

My next big free community event will be the Havant Jobs and Apprenticeships Fair on Friday 3 March at the Horizon Leisure Centre – everyone is welcome. Building on last year’s successful event, local employers will be offering a wide range of jobs and apprenticeships, so save the date.

LOCAL GOLF SOCIETY RAISE £1,000 FOR QA’S CHILDREN’S DEPARTMENT

To enforce a Suspended Possession Order (SPO), landlords must first apply for and obtain the Courts permission under Rule 83.2;

The Court of Appeal has recently ruled in the case of Cardiff County Council v Lee [2016] EWCA Civ 1034 that residential landlords must apply for the Courts permission pursuant to Civil Procedure Rule 83.2 before being able to apply for an eviction warrant if a Suspended Possession Order is breached.

Essentially, in March 2013 Cardiff County Council commenced possession proceedings for Anti-social behaviour against Mr Lee and a Suspended Possession Order was obtained with the right to possession suspended for 2 years.

Following further complaints of antisocial behaviour, the Council issued a request for a warrant for possession (Form N325) and sought an eviction date. A date was set but Mr Lee applied to stay the warrant. The District Judge dismissed this so Mr Lee appealed.

On appeal, a Circuit Judge ruled the Council had not followed the correct procedure as it had failed to apply to the Court for permission before issuing the warrant.

The decision was based on CPR 83.2(3)(e) which provides that a warrant for possession cannot be issued without the court’s permission where under the Order or Judgement: “Any person is entitled to a remedy subject to the fulfilment of any condition, and it is alleged that the condition has been fulfilled.”

The Court held that this Rule applied to enforcement of a SPO, meaning issuing a

The Ascension Golf Society has raised £1,000 towards the Children’s Oncology Charitable Fund for the Children’s Department at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham.

The society from North End, who have been going for 12 years and have 40 members, raised the funds through charity golf days and challenges.

Nigel Palmer, Treasurer of the Ascension Golf Society said, “We decided to fund-raise for the Children’s Oncology Fund as we wanted the money to benefit children within the local community. It is a hugely worthy cause and one which will make a difference.

warrant for possession following a breach of a SPO without first having obtained the court’s permission to do so is unlawful.

County Courts could exercise their discretion under Rule 3.10 to excuse the landlords failure to seek possession.

Despite the Council not applying for permission, the High Court excused this error and relied on CPR Rule 3.10 which allows the Court the discretion to excuse technical procedural error. Mr Lee appealed to the Court of Appeal.

Appeal Judges accepted Rule 83.2 applied and permission was needed but agreed with the High Court that the Court has the discretion to rely on Rule 3.10.

Essentially, the County Court could at the tenants stay application hearing rely on Rule 3.10 and give permission for the warrant application to be approved.

However, it appears from the wording of Lady Arden’s Judgement that for the Courts to retrospectively remedy the application for permission, it needs to be considered whether: a. b.

The application was a genuine error; and Has the court subsequently seen sufficient evidence of the breach.

In Judgement Lady Arden acknowledges “CPR 83.2 constitutes an important protection for tenants and is not to be taken lightly. Social landlords must ensure that from now on their systems are such that the same mistake will not be made in the future.”

Hayling St Andrews Hayling St Andrews have always been a club of strong values. We believe in giving all kids a chance to play football and to do it the way it was intended, with fair play and respect. The club has recently been acknowledged for their achievements last season by winning not one, not two, but three fair play awards from the Portsmouth Youth Football League. The three awards were; the U10 Award to our U11s White’s team managed by Jodie Cutting, Under 13 Award to our U13 Red’s team managed by Dean Smith and finally the club were awarded the prestigious 11-a-side Fair Play Shield, which is given to the club who has the best overall fair play rating of all of 11-aside football.

Chris Davies, a well known cyclist in the Havant area,celebrated his 80th birthday on 17th September.

Chris, familiarly known to his cycling friends by his initials – CCP – has kept a detailed record of his cycling journeys over many years and has clocked up over 900,000 miles. His bright yellow bike carries his name and the slogan 'Happy Havant' to confirm to the world his place of birth and the residence of his family for several generations.

The Davies family owned the Chemists opposite St Faith's church in Havant and also the Magnolia House dental practice over which Chris had a flat. It was not unusual on a visit to the dentist to see Chris carrying his bike down the stairs.

The Missing Link

On 25th October, after ten years of efforts by various groups, including the CTC, the missing link between Horndean and Petersfield was open for use.

Until then, cyclists, walkers and horseriders had no direct route, and had to use the extremely steep hills at Buriton or South Harting.

Years ago the A3 road from London ran over this hill and they recut the road beside it at a lower level to make it easier for motor traffic to get over, This road is extremely busy and has no cycle path.

The old road is still there but chopped through at one point so it isn't continuous.

A new link has at last been made to give walkers, cyclists and horse riders a manageable alternative to the severe hills further East.

The existing road from Horndean uses the old main road which runs alongside the A3 and leads into Queen Elizabeth Country Park where there is now a gentle ramp up to the layby on the A3 and from there rises to meet the disused old section of the main road to Petersfield.

So, a dozen riders from CTC set out the following day and we were among the first to try this new route.

Mitchell who visit him there, were able to attend.

CCP’s two brothers, Jack and Peter, were both there, and Chris’s sister-in-law, Gwynedd, had made a lovely cake, with a bicycle on it and an impressive, large, sparkling candle.

As well as tea and coffee (and the cake,of course) wine flowed. This included some of Chris's favourite, Rose, which some of the cyclists will remember from memorable cycling trips to France with him.

The weather was good and traffic light on these once major roads now serving local communities, but still tarmaced over and in places still having traces of the white lines from when the carriageway was part of something else. At QECP we had arranged to meet one of our members who lives in Petersfield and had ridden down to meet us so she actually rode the Butser link before the rest of us, but after meeting up we rode North to Petersfield, stopping on the way to assist another cyclist with a puncture.

A pleasant stop in Petersfield for refreshment and our little group made the return journey picking up the new link and tackling the north face of Butser. This is steeper than the rise out of QECP. I am not ashamed to admit that I was working hard but our eleven year old member, Katie Anne soared past me and waited at the top.

From there it is all downhill into the Park, and pretty much all downhill to Horndean and our way back to Havant.

Silver Skiers

More and more people are taking up skiing and snowboarding and with ski season officially upon us, silver skier Judy Thompson shares her inspirational story.

Judy underwent a second hip operation under the care of Spire Portsmouth Hospital Orthopaedic Consultant, Mr Hugh Clarke almost 2 years ago after suffering from severe pain and immobility.

“It is truly exhausting to try and live a normal life with chronic pain”, explains Judy. “I continued working as a GP before my first hip replacement with Mr Clarke and functioned at a fairly basic level, just trying to get through the day. I also found it impossible to sleep, so ordinary living was a huge effort.”

Postcode Publications Postcode Publications Rowlands Castle Flood Action Group Preparations for Winter From Andy Lee - Rowlands Castle Flood Action Group andylee@finchdean.com We’ve enjoyed some glorious weather this autumn. The mix of sunshine and rain produced ideal growing weather so our attention turned at our most recent meeting to the annual task of ensuring that the water course is clear in case the Lavant’s flow again this winter.

Last year, we saw the benefits of the culvert clearance in the Sling, work that was financed by a Community Resilience Grant from SSE (Scottish & Southern Electricity).

Whilst the Chalton Lavant didn’t rise, much to the relief of Finchdean residents, the flow from the Idsworth Lavant was fast and full.

There was no flooding in Finchdean Road following the clearance of drainage channels in the Sling, so we hope this augurs well.

We enjoy excellent working relationships with the public bodies on which we rely. East Hampshire District

Council, Hampshire District Council, the Environment Agency and SSE are regular attendees at our Group meetings and help us ensure we are as well prepared for the winter as we can be.

Our aim is to work collaboratively with landowners who are responsible for ensuring that ditches are cleared of vegetation that might impede the water flow. This is the crucial time of year for this important work. It involves a lot of planning and discussion as the Lavant course passes through many different properties including land owned by public bodies such as Network Rail and local Councils (both Hampshire and West Sussex). We’re especially grateful to the West Sussex County Council volunteer team who helped clear the ditch at Deanlane End in September.

We are also working with BT and West Sussex Highways to tackle a problem at Deanlane End. The BT pipe carrying cable is below the level of the water course when in full flow meaning that debris snags on the pipe slowing the flow. This then has to be cleared by public spirited volunteers – work that is not without risk.

Two other matters: should any resident be finding it difficult to obtain insurance because of flooding related issues, do consider Flood Re – their website is www.floodre.co.uk. This company has been set up to help householders in a flood risk area find affordable insurance.

Also, we have a number of people in the Parish who have volunteered their time and energies should we need help. Do let me know if you’d like to volunteer as well!

Coping with Loss at Christmas “Happy Christmas!” - a lovely sentiment if you’re feeling full of Christmas cheer, but for people who have experienced a significant loss, Christmas is often a difficult time. Christmas can be a wonderful time of year, but it’s unique as there is no other time of year where there can be such high expectations to be ‘perfect’: the perfect decorations, perfect food and presents, Christmas TV and perfect family times with loved ones.

Christmas is a time when loneliness can hurt more than ever as it can seem as though the rest of the world is surrounded by love and laughter. If this Christmas is particularly difficult because you are grieving the death of a loved one, it may help to find a way to remember the one you love in a way that feels special and helps you to stay feeling connected in some way.

Death ends a life, not a relationship. By this I mean that when someone close to us

dies, there are lots of ways to continue to have a bond with them which can be helpful.

• Talk about the person with others, especially friends and relatives.

• Visit somewhere special that had meaning for both of you.

• Don’t be afraid to talk aloud to the person.

• Write a poem or letter to the person who died, expressing your thoughts, feelings and memories.

• Memory boxes can be a good way to stay connected. They are particularly useful for children but work just as well for adults.

• Lighting a candle for your loved one can be a beautiful way to remember them.

One way you could choose to remember your loved one and join with others who similarly want to remember someone they miss, is to take part in the

VETERAN’S ALCOHOL MISUSE More support needed to increase awareness in veterans about alcohol misuse, research suggests.

Newly published results of a study conducted at Queen Alexandra Hospital looking at differences in alcohol misuse between veterans and the general public show more needs to be done earlier to help veterans with drinking problems.

The results come in time for Alcohol Awareness Week - highlighting the threat to physical and mental health of drinking too much.

The study, carried out in collaboration with Combat Stress and the King’s Centre for Military Health Research, found evidence to suggest that veterans were more likely to be referred for support with alcohol difficulties at an older age and to be admitted to hospital for longer periods of

time, compared to non-veterans.

The report, co-written by Dr Greta Westwood, Deputy Director of Research and Innovation at the Portsmouth Hospital Trust, said: “The findings presented within the paper suggest that the alcohol difficulties of UK veterans do not differ significantly from the non-veterans in the general public.

However, in this sample of those individuals accessing a district general hospital, veterans with alcohol problems appeared to be older and more likely to be referred for medical difficulties rather than problems directly attributed to alcohol abuse. Taken together, this suggests that more support may be needed to help increase awareness in veterans about the potential harm of drinking higher than recommended levels and then help to engage veterans in alcohol services at a younger age.”

Retrospective anonymised data used for the study were extracted from the medical records of the 2,300 patients referred to the Alcohol Specialist Nurses Service (ASNS) at QA over an 18 month period between March 2014 and September 2015. Around 10% of those included in the study stated they were a veteran.

“No differences in the severity of alcohol problems were observed between veterans and non-veterans who had been screened positive for experiencing difficulties with alcohol from a population attending a general hospital for a range of difficulties. However, veterans appeared to present over 10 years later, and there was some evidence to suggest they then spend longer periods of time admitted to hospital,” the report concluded.

If you don’t you could incur a £100 penalty, with a further £10 added for every day after that up to 90 days, plus interest.

Here are a few simple tips when filling out your self-assessment form: 1. Set up an online account with HMRC. In order to file your return online you will need a log-in for the HMRC website at www.gov.uk/login-file-self-assessment-tax-return. It takes up to seven working days to receive your activation code in the post and you won’t be able to file your return without it.

2. Get your paperwork in order. Make sure you have all the paperwork you need to hand. This could include a P60 form from your employer showing your income and the tax you’ve paid, a P45 form if you have left a job within the tax year, a P11 D detailing any benefits or expenses.

Also, details of interest on bank and building society accounts, dividends from investments and any other income you receive.

3. Keep a record. Create a spreadsheet to detail your income and expenses and update it regularly.

4. Save for your tax. May be a little too late for this year but for next year open a separate savings account and put in regular amounts of your income so you’ll have enough to pay your tax bill 5. Avoid the headache and find a good accountant to help you complete your tax return.

ROWANS LIVING WELL CENTRE OPENS Rowans Living Well Centre opened its doors to the first patients and carers in October as building contractor, Bill Richardson of Richardsons (Nyewood) Ltd formally handed over the keys to the building to Honorary Chairman of Trustees, Elizabeth Emms.

Hayling Billy Heritage Project

A range of community groups and public sector organisations from across Hampshire took part in a morning’s training session with Pfizer, a large global pharmaceutical company based in New Lane, Havant.

The session was organised by Community First as part of the Employee Volunteering Skill Share Scheme and was an opportunity for community group managers to benefit from Pfizer’s extensive knowledge, learning about how to create an effective working environment.

Pfizer’s fascinating workshop provoked interesting discussion around creating effective mission statements, metrics and measures, getting the best out of your staff meetings, among other interesting topics, giving managers many ideas that they could take back and implement into their own organisations.

More than 50 people recently attended a celebration of the completion of the Hayling Billy Heritage Project organised by Havant Borough Council.

The event honoured the volunteers who worked on the project and celebrated the extensive successes of the project.

Presentations were shown to represent the work which was undertaken and certificates were presented to the volunteers, without whom the project would not have been completed.

The Hayling Billy Heritage Project rediscovered the trail which is now used by many for walking, riding and cycling along the coast.

Portsmouth Hospitals offers more patients than ever the chance to participate in research, report shows Portsmouth Hospitals offers more patients than ever the chance to participate in research, report shows Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust has increased its research activity significantly in the last year offering more patients access to better care, services and treatments, according to a league table published today by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network (CRN).

The 2015/16 NIHR Research Activity League Table shows the research team at

Queen Alexandra Hospital recruited 3,751 patients into clinical trials last year – an increase of over 16% on the previous year.

The Trust also saw a 12% increase in the number of clinical trials it is able to offer to patients – from 158 in 2014/15 to 177 in 2015/16.

Promoting, conducting and using clinical research to improve treatments, care and services for patients is part of the NHS England Constitution. The NIHR Research Activity League Table provides a picture of how much clinical research is happening,

Commercial research (usually working with pharmaceutical companies to trial new cutting-edge treatments) activity is an added feature for the 2015/16 league table.

Collaboration with industry is vital to enable the NHS to deliver first class clinical

research, speeding up the development and availability of new treatments, therapies and diagnostics. The data shows that a record number of commercial contract research studies have been delivered by NHS Trusts in England over the last five years.

Primary care research is also highlighted as part of the report, listing the extent of research activity happening in communities across the country. Last year over 42% of English GP practices recruited people to NIHR research studies.

Chief Executive Officer of the NIHR CRN, Dr Jonathan Sheffield, said: “This years NIHR league table shows every NHS trust in England is now research active, and that over 60% [53% for CCG’s] increased their research activity last year. Evidence clearly shows research active trusts have better patient outcomes, with 605,000 people across England participating in research in the NHS in last year the outlook is very encouraging.

“The league table results are a great achievement for all involved, and highlight the growing commitment to research from the NHS and patients.”

Food and Wine January Wine Cut Backs (price not quality).

Jonathan Rogers of VIN Wine Merchants in Emsworth offers some bargain wines for the New Year.

We all know that December can be an expensive month. The money we spend on the high street buying gifts for our friends and family seems to increase year after year.

Not to mention the amount spent on extra food, goodies we would not normally eat during the rest of the year. The same can be said for wine and other bottled delights.

How much Baileys do we drink at Christmas compared with other months? Sherry sales also increase as Grandmas’ around the country enjoy a few extra glasses. We also spend that little bit more on wine as we treat ourselves to something special for the festive lunch. Christmas is a time for treating ourselves and others, and why not? We work hard the whole year so we deserve it.

But then January arrives. The holidays and festivities go and the office and hard work arrive once more. It’s this time when we have to tighten our belts a little and revert back to our normal eating and drinking habits.

But that does not mean we have to drink cheaper wines which are of lesser quality. On an average priced bottle of wine the tax makes up 52% of the overall price. With this in mind, finding bargain bottles should in theory be difficult.

‘What makes a bargain wine a bargain?’ It’s a question I often get asked along with ‘is a wine that cost £50 significantly better than a wine that cost £5?’ The answer I usually give is if you like the wine then it’s a good wine, no matter what you paid for it. Wine is all about personal preference. It’s good to go for different styles and explore different wines but we generally know what styles we like. A high price tag of a wine does not reflect the overall cost of producing that wine. The main reason is the rarity value of it and the name. Most of these wines for example Lafite, Cheval Blanc, Mouton Rothschild and Romanée Conti are all in very small production and high demand,

especially in good years.

Wine shipped in bulk is booming at the moment. These wines are shipped from the country of origin usually the further regions like Chile or Australia, in huge tanks and then bottled in Europe. It’s far cheaper for the producers to do it this way as they are not having the cost of bottles, closures, labels etc and obviously the cost of shipping by the bottle. This is picked up by the shipper and these savings are passed onto us. I will be increasing my bulk wines shipments in 2017 as I believe the quality of wine is there along with the bargain price tag. Something else I will be focussing on in 2017 is shipping wines myself. Cutting out the middle man also saves a few pennies plus you will be able to buy wine which is exclusive to VIN. Here are a few wines that won’t break the bank and still great quality.

Food Fiend Experience Recipe column - by Kathy Fitchett

Stuffed Roasted Festive Peppers Here is a vegan dish which can be served as the main course for a festive occasion. It is particularly versatile as it can also be used as a side dish to accompany the main course or used as the starter. Low fat, high fibre and a tasty healthy treat. Food Fiend Experience offers cookery courses and private dining experiences.

Ingredients: 1 pack Tesco quick cook seven grains 2 medium sized red onions 100g pine nuts 75g dried cranberries 1 tsp mixed spice 1 tsp cumin ½ tsp nutmeg ½ tsp paprika 1 small bunch parsley 1 grated lemon zest 1 vegetable stock cube 4-5 large mixed peppers Method: 1. Put bag of the seven grains in a sauce pan and cover with twice as much boiling water. Add stock cube, spices and salt and pepper. Cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally and top up with hot water if required. Strain off any excess liquid.

2. Finely slice onions and place on a microwaveable dish add a couple of olive oil and stir well. Microwave on high for 10 minutes stop after 5 minutes to stir and continue cooking.

3. Toast pine nuts on medium heat in frying pan.

4. Separate and roughly chop cranberries if desired or leave whole.

5. Wash and finely chop parsley.

6. Wash peppers and using sharp knife remove stalk and some of top of pepper.

Leaving large enough hole to place filling in the centre of the pepper.

7. Add chopped parsley, toasted pine nuts and cranberries, lemon zest and cooked onion to the cooked grains and stir well.

Add additional seasoning if desired. Fill each pepper with the filling. Place in an oven proof dish.

8. Cook the peppers on fan 180 for 20 to 25 minutes until cooked through.

Cook the grains with boiling water and added spices, stock and seasoning.

Well, the parties are over; so now what?

Most of us will have spent a good month or so preparing ourselves for Christmas in all sorts of ways, so it’s very easy to feel the gap left by the Big Event being over.

So many of us have everything we actually need, so the gifts we’ve received are often difficult to fit into homes already replete with our existing possessions.

A little twist in the use of items can help in more direction than one.

Decanters have always been staple Christmas gifts, with or without the bottle of port. Recently fallen from grace, a nice Victorian decanter or glass flask can cost as little as £10, and looks fabulous in the bathroom with coloured bath gel, shampoo or salts.

You hauled out your grannie’s best bowl for the trifle and you can’t fit it back in the cupboard? Why not use it to display your old beads? Marbles? Buttons?

And where could you hide the cake stand when you’re not serving cup-cakes? Use it on your shelves as a display ‘riser’; ornaments tuck under the platter very nicely, leaving the surface for a dramatic focal point.

You were given new packs of playing cards?

Use the old ones as disposable drinks coasters, or altered-art for cards for friends named ‘Jack’, or invitations like “When the Deuce are you coming for dinner?”.

Yes, but ‘tacky’ works!

And I say 10/10 to the gentleman in our shop who suggested that a pair of obstetric forceps would be ideal in the kitchen for dealing with aubergines!

(See my recipe for Imam Bayildi in last month’s issue). Mind you, I don’t actually know anyone who’s been given a set of those for Christmas!

Even gift socks can double-up for mittens if you’ve lost yours just when you need to make a snowman (or woman).

The rules are out there to be changed: surprise your loved ones with the number of ways in which you can adapt their gifts. At least during the 12 days of Christmas, and maybe beyond!

Probably easier to accomplish if you avoid the high-street retail chains.

And don’t try doing anything rash with an iPad. But I’m sure that a vintage headscarf will easily double as a salad-spinner next summer.

Scrooged

This film, based on Charles Dickens’ Scrooge, stars Bill Murray as the Scrooge figure, only this time the story is updated for the modern audience.

I was pleasantly surprised with this film; I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did. It’s a fun film and an interesting take on the well-known and much-filmed story. I think Bill Murray did well in the title role and it was quite funny, albeit in a dark way, some times. And it is a black comedy, so it does have some scary scenes. It’s rated 12, so it’s definitely not your average Christmas film. It’s not very feel-good, as most Christmas movies are, but that doesn’t mean it’s not enjoyable. It is.

I would recommend this to people who want a new take on the tale and for those wanting a fun time.

Four Christmases Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn in a comedy about four divorced family Christmases and them trying to attend each one. A film starring Vince Vaughan brings to mind a different type of comedy than Reese Witherspoon does.Vince Vaughn is mostly known in films that are crude and Reese Witherspoon on the other hand, is mostly known for light and frothy comedies (some call chick flicks – and they definitely are, most of them, anyway). So, a film starring the pair together is a bit intriguing.

It’s sad to say that bringing them together only makes this film a little better.

As a whole, the film could be worse, but it’s just average. The performances are ok and that goes for the film, as well. The worst

thing about this film is that it’s not very funny. I was amused at a bouncy castle scene, but that was it for the laughs, and even then I didn’t laugh out loud. It wasn’t glaringly funny. I digress, it could have been much worse than it was. As it is, it’s ok.

Puppet Master 3 The third film is an origin story of the first puppet, the original killer puppets that Toulon created in Nazi Germany, however there’s Retro Puppet Master where they trace the puppets back to ancient Egypt, which is a bit confusing.

However, in this third, and one of the last great films in the series, older incarnations of the puppets in the first and second films are shown and also there are some completely new to us puppets. I especially like the scene where a puppet climbs a building to assassinate a person.

People who didn’t like the other films will also not like this one, but those who did will enjoy it a lot. There’s a fare share of gore in this, too, which is pretty graphic. Ok, it is a B-movie, but the effects are still great and it is fairly entertaining.

During the Half-Term holiday Year 11 pupils at The Hayling College, supported by Reverend Hayley Young, spent a day at the University of Cambridge enjoying a bespoke taster day with graduates and undergraduates.

The pupils had a series of lectures on the application process and Life as an Oxbridge Student as well as an academic lecture from Dr. Steve Watts, author, English lecturer and Head of Admissions at Homerton College. After lunch in the Great Hall, pupils enjoyed the hospitality of Trinity College and saw student accommodation

dating back centuries as well as the landmark buildings and rooms occupied by famous alumni such as Sir Isaac Newton, Lord Byron and, more recently, the likes of Stephen Hawking and Eddie Redmayne.

The University have since invited Hayling College pupils to come back on an annual basis. Headteacher Colin Rainford said “this is a fantastic opportunity to raise aspirations and inspire youngsters to achieve their potential and we look forward to furthering our ties with Cambridge and other universities.”

Puppet Master 4 This is when the series started to dip in quality. This fourth entry is still watchable and has serviceable effects (however, little gore), but it is just a step down. It’s almost like a childish version of the first two films, which is not ok. I think these two films (4 and 5) got an R rating, but they are definitely not hard R rated movies. They could almost be PG-13, there’s that little gore. It’s good to see the puppets helping people out and the new puppet’s enemy is good, but some scenes are just naff, the science is shoddy and it’s all extremely predictable.

Waitrose Havant donates £100,000 to local causes donates £1,000 to three local good causes Waitrose Havant has reached a milestone figure for its Community Matters (the green-token) scheme this Christmas, having donated a total of £100,000 to local good causes in the South Hampshire area since the scheme began in 2008.

As one of over 190 Waitrose branches to achieve this total, Waitrose Havant has contributed to the £28 million donated by the supermarket as a whole, supporting 84,000 causes.

Trust wins prestigious award Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust has won a prestigious national award for the work it has done to help patients with chronic respiratory conditions.

The HSJ Awards 2016 were held at the O2 InterContinental London Hotel last night.

MISSION-Asthma and COPD, a collaborative project between the Research and Innovation team at Queen Alexandra Hospital and Wessex Academic Health Science Network, were crowned winners of the Primary Care Innovation category.

The Trust designed the MISSION

projects to identify patients on GP registers at risk of asthma, and then chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), so they could receive swift community-based assessment.

Results from the asthma scheme included a 67 per cent cut in emergency department visits, while the follow-up COPD project, supported by a grant from the Health Foundation, slashed such visits by 97 per cent in month five.

Judges hailed the “patient-focused” scheme, which also won an award in July at the HSJ Patient Safety Awards.

Professor Anoop Chauhan, Director of Research and Innovation at PHT, and mastermind behind the project, said: “It is clear that this project has improved, and potentially saved, many lives locally. He said: “Over the last 35 years, the HSJ Awards have grown to become the largest celebration of healthcare excellence in the UK – and very probably the biggest healthcare awards in the world.

It has done so for one reason above all: the dedication of NHS staff from every discipline and every sector to drive improvements which benefit patient care and strengthen a service which has become the defining characteristic of this nation.”

Postcode Publications New cycle route links picturesque town and village locations A new all-weather cycle route is to be built to link Emsworth and Rowlands Castle.

Work is due to start this month to create another way to travel between the two destinations, from new and existing paths and bridleways.

The route, beginning at the north end of Hollybank Lane, Emsworth and joining to Woodberry Lane in Rowlands Castle is the latest in a series of schemes delivered through partnership working between Havant Borough Council (HBC) and Hampshire County Council.

Funded from local development contributions, the improved path will be widened and resurfaced for use by hikers, cyclists and equestrians.

Once complete the Friends of Hollybank Woods who currently maintain part of this route will use their 17 years of experience to ensure an all-weather standard is maintained all year through. Crossings will be upgraded where the route meets Emsworth Common Road, and in Hollybank Lane.

A spokesman for HBC, said, “This is another part of the jigsaw in providing safe and direct cycle routes across the borough.

Community First facilitated a morning’s volunteering at Leigh Park Community Centre, Havant, for local firm Lockheed Martin UK. A team of nine willing volunteers gave up their day to decorate a large meeting room and hallway at the popular community centre.

Dan Moore, Facilities Manager at the centre said, “Volunteering is invaluable, this has been a huge help to us. The room has not been decorated for a number of years and desperately needed attention. We would like to thank Lockheed Martin UK at Havant for their hard work in making this a cleaner, brighter space for the local people of Leigh Park to enjoy.”

Lockheed Martin UK - Integrated Systems (LMUK IS), regularly takes part in volunteering activities organised by Community First.

Mark Ralphson, Director of Engineering and Technology at Lockheed Martin said “volunteering is a huge part of our DNA, we provide support to many community projects from environmental challenges to help wildlife, to maintaining public spaces. Table Tennis Club gets served with first Community Grant Hayling Community Centre’s Table Tennis Club is the first to be awarded funding from the new Havant Borough Council Community Grant Scheme.

The popular group who applied for the grant via their local ward Councillor have been awarded £200 for the purchase of a new table tennis table, to replace their

councillor who can then award grants to voluntary and not-for-profit organisations who make a difference within their own wards.

Councillor Andrew Lenaghan, from Hayling West ward said “We are delighted this scheme has been introduced, as it is often the smaller requests for funding that get

damaged one.

Following the council’s Ping Pong campaign back in 2014 the club formed using only one table. Since then they have had to fundraise to purchase five more tables to meet popular demand.

The new Community Grant Scheme allocates funding of up to £1,000 to each

overlooked. I am delighted to be able to support the table tennis club with the first of my grants”.

The grant scheme aims to ensure that communities can fund what is specifically important in their area.

BEER BOOKS FOR CHRISTMAS 2016 has been another good year for beer books. Beer is really popular and we now have over 1500 craft breweries in the UK brewing thousands of different beers. In order to get the most from beer I think it is useful to understand its history and to get to know the myriad of different styles that are now available at local pubs, supermarkets and off-licences. Here is my annual round up of beer books, all of which would make good Christmas presents for the beer lovers in your life.

Good Beer Guide 2017. Ed. Roger Protz. Camra. £15.99 This is the bible for the real ale lover. It is now in its 44th edition and at over 1000 pages is very good value for money. The books starts with a 30 page section of beer news, information about festivals, beer styles and beer appreciation. There is also a brief guide to beer styles. The bulk of the book consists of a county by county round up of the best 4500 real ale pubs in the UK as nominated by CAMRA branches. There are about 120 listings for Hampshire. Strangely there is only pub mentioned in the whole of the Borough of Havant, Coal Exchange in Emsworth, yet Portsmouth manages 19 entries. The final section of the book is a unique listing of all 1540 breweries in the UK including 34 for Hampshire. Locally we have two in the Borough of Havant, Emsworth Brewhouse and Emsworth Brewery.

Good Pub Guide 2017 2017. Ed. Fiona Stapley. Ebury. £15.99 This annual, which is now in its 35th edition, lists over 5000 pubs as recommended by readers. The main focus is on pubs that offer food. The book starts with some general articles about pubs and then follows the county by county approach.

I was pleased to see that there are 6 local pubs mentioned: Lord Raglan, Coal Exchange and Blue Bell in Emsworth; Wheelwrights in Havant; Maypole, Hayling and the Royal Oak at Langstone. A useful book if you are looking for a pub that offers a reasonable eating experience.

Pint to Pint. The Telegraph. Icon Books. 2016. £12.99 This is more of a book to read at home rather than take with you on holiday. It consists of around 130 two-page essays about pubs in different parts of the UK. The book is written by a variety of writers including beer experts such as Sophie Atherton and Adrian Tierney-Jones. The articles have all appeared in the Daily Telegraph between 2013 and 2015.

Hampshire manages four entries with the nearest local pub being the Bat and Ball at Clanfield. The quality of writing is very good and may inspire readers to plan a holiday around some of the pubs mentioned in the book.

This beautifully illustrated large format hardback book would grace any beer lovers’ bookshelf or coffee (or beer) table. Pete is one of our best known beer writers and has written such fine books as: Hops and Glory, Man Walks into a Pub and Three Sheets to the Wind. He has chosen 300 pubs across the UK (including two in Hampshire) and writes about their character, history and ambience. This is not a best beer or best food type of guide but a purely subjective journey around Britain with Pete stopping at various pubs and reflecting upon their character in a most entertaining way. A lovely book to read on a winters evening.

CAMRA’S Beer Anthology. Ed. Roger Protz. CAMRA. 2016. £9.99 This is a nice stocking filler for any beer lover.

The book is a collection of quotes, essays, poems and writings about beer from various authors from C15 to the present day. All the great names of English literature had something to say about ale from Thomas Hardy to Graham Greene and from William Shakespeare to Chaucer. A lovely little book to dip into whilst you are supping a late night ale.

Cooking with Beer. Mark Dredge. Dog ‘n’ Bone. 2016. £16.99.

This is a cookbook for beer fans or possiblly a beer book for cooks. The book contains over 60 beautifully illustrated recipes all of which use different types of beer. The author takes us through the day with beery meals for breakfast, snacks, soups, main courses, cakes, desserts and even beer ice-creams. He also recommends an appropriate beer for each course. The instructions are very clear and there are lovely photos of the completed dishes.

The Pocket Book of Craft Beers.

It used to be simple when choosing beer, it was either bitter, lager or stout. Thanks to the craft beer explosion of recent years we are now inundated with different styles of beer. It is very clearly written by a beer expert and includes many personal recommendations of the best beers of each style.

A great little book to take with you next time you go beer shopping in a big supermarket.

Rethink Press. 2016. £10.99 The craft beer phenomena originated in the USA in the 1980’s but really took off over the last 10 years when we have seen an explosion in the number of brewery startups. This book attempts to study the current beer industry and look at what has driven the market and the challenges that face small brewers in the future. It is very well written for a business book and has some fascinating insights into the brewing industry.

Down Beer Street: History in a Pint Glass. Mika Rissanen & Juha Tahvanainen.

Souvenir Press. 2016. £12.

Like beer? Like History? Then you will love this quirky little book which looks at key moments in European history and the beers that might have been consumed by the key players. The Reformation, exploration of the Arctic, WW1, Tour de France, coming of the railways and many other events are all discussed with reference to contemporary beers. The book is written by two Finnish history professors and is a delightful read.

The Beer Geek Handbook. Patrick Dawson. Storey. £10.99 This is a most amusing illustrated American book about the joys of beer geekery. This is what happens when beer takes over your life and you have to try every type of beer that is brewed. The book covers the 10 Commandments of Beer Geeks, what to look for in the ideal beer, how to tell beer geeks from beer snobs and many other pearls of beer geek wisdom.

The United States of Beer. Dane Huckelbridge. W Morrow. £16.99 This informative book looks at the history of beer in each region of the USA. The main thesis of the book is that local beer styles were influenced by early immigrants who brought brewing skills from England, Germany, Netherlands, etc. There is also a fascinating account of the rivalry between beer and whiskey in the Southern states. If you are at all interested in American history then this book will be very rewarding.

The Belgian Beer Book. Eric Verdonck & Luc de Raedmaeker. Lannoo. £45 If you are looking for something really special that will give much pleasure to a beer lover then I can really recommend this sumptuous book. It is a large format, beautifully illustrated 700 page hardback book covering everything you could want to know about Belgian beer. In Belgium the tradition of making local craft beers never died out and the country boasts a huge range of fascinating beers. This book gives you the complete history of Belgian brewing together with detailed guides to each style and many recommendations. There is also a useful section on Belgian breweries which is essential for anyone contemplating a holiday in Belgium. Definitely my beer book of the year.

‘Tis the season for Park to shine & be inspired EBP South - Amazing People Awards

Park Community School and Park Community Enterprises were both worthy winners of two awards at the EBP Annual Amazing People Awards in November. Daisy-Mae Armstrong was nominated for the Amazing Work Experience category and was delighted to win. Daisy commented “I enjoyed my work experience because everyone was really nice and friendly, they welcomed me and made me feel comfortable. My favourite part was learning a whole new experience, it has made me more confident and has encouraged me to embrace any opportunity that comes my way.”

Sarah Coles, Park’s Careers Co-ordinator said, “Daisy initially wasn’t keen on the idea of work experience, however after a few conversations Daisy admitted she had an interest in cosmetics. With support from her mother we managed to get a placement at Boots, where she clearly thrived.

Daisy has developed confidence andmotivation to achieve.”

An inspirational day with Aaron Phipps Paralympic Wheelchair Rugby 150 Sports Ambassadors from Park Community School were fortunate enough to have a Sky Sports for Living Athlete Mentor carry out a two-hour practical workshop and then visit a variety of classes and take an assembly.

Part of a Youth Sport Trust initiative, the purpose of the visit was to inspire and motivate young people to achieve their best. This was demonstrated by promoting mental toughness, developing the hunger to achieve, using people skills, raising awareness of knowledge of sport, at the same time breaking down barriers and planning for success. Aaron Phipps talked about his journey to becoming a 2012 Paralympian, in which he had endured having his feet and some fingers removed at the age of 15 due to meningitis.

He then became determined to be successful and trained hard to be a Paralympian and went on to climb Kilimanjar,o by crawling, for the Meningitis trust. The first ever disabled person to do this!

Aaron was impressed by our students and was overwhelmed by their empathy and maturity, during the workshops. Aaron explained “I am really impressed with how proactive the young people have been and how they have participated in a most mature and enthusiastic way! I hope they will use the messages of positive thinking, resilience and determination that we discussed in the session, now and in later life. They are a superb group of young people.”

Cain Holmes, student at Park Community School, said, “Today has been a real eye opener for me, the experience that Aaron has been through and the challenges that he has met have been outstanding.

He shows that there is light at the end of the tunnel if you change your thoughts and see the best in awful situations.”

Yiannis Razzell, student at Park Community School, said, “Aaron, through his experience and practical activities, taught us about being resilient, standing on our own two feet and thinking about problems as things to be overcome and not let them dominate your life.”

Janice Norman, Sports Ambassador Coordinator at Park Community School, said, “We had a most inspirational day and as usual our students responded accordingly and really participated in an enthusiastic, considerate way. I am so impressed with Aaron’s frank delivery and how much empathy and respect came from our students to Aaron. Aaron’s story is an example to us all. I will never forget this. We had an amazing day!”

The Sports Ambassadors organised and ran a mixed activity event with 120 Year 5 students from Warren Park School and Year 7 students from Park Community School. They had a Wheelchair Rugby Tournament, Crab Football, Sitting Volleyball and Badminton. Havant Rugby Club were present to encourage them to join their club and as a result of the day have been invited to do workshops at Havant Rugby Club next week.

Aaron, with fantastic enthusiasm and positive spirit, encouraged students to never give up and be positive in their attitude at all times. He also talked about hanging your thoughts to see your way around problems.

Spirit of the South Sing Out Spirit-of-the-South were invited to sing at the Annual Memorial Service, in St Johns Cathedral, Portsmouth, on Wednesday ,16th of November. As candles were lit we sang Leonard Cohens Hallelujah, I Believe, The Huron Carol, and Lord We Thank Thee, which is a short blessing. In the period of reflection, we sang Amazing Grace. Monday 23rd January - 19:00 for 19L30 ‘Flying & Displaying Vintage Jet Aircraft’ presented by Mr. Rod Dean Mr. Rod Dean is returning after 2 years to give the first Air ACES talk for 2017.

Back by popular demand after his first brilliant presentation, Rod Dean’s latest talk will cover his introduction to display flying, in a Hunter during 1972 & 1973, from his base at RAF Chivenor. He will go on to talk about his subsequent and numerous displays in vintage civil registered jet aircraft. These aircraft include the Vampire,Venom, Meteor, T33, and the F86A as well as civil registered Hunters. His remarkable presentation will include a number of superb videos and photos.

Air ACES is an aviation talk society, providing its members with regular talks, given by experts in many different fields related to the world of aviation. These talks cover subjects such as test flying, piloting iconic aircraft, RAF, aviation industry, air displays and many other related topics.

Monday 27th February - 19:00 for 19:30 ‘The Apache Helicopter and its Operations in Afganistan and Libya’ Lt Col David Amlôt MBE, MA, MCGI, Army Air Corps Lt Col David Amlôt started flying helicopters in 1993. Whist on deployment to the US he was the first British pilot to fly the AH64D Apache Longbow and won the first Apache Longbow Top Gun competition.

On returning to the UK he was awarded the MBE and later became the AAC’s first Apache Weapons Instructor. He commanded 656 Squadron AAC (Apache) completing 3 tours of Afghanistan between 2006 and 2009 and returned there in 2013

after deployment to Libya in 2011. He ultimately became responsible for the training of all British Army pilots and Aircrewmen.

In this fascinating talk, Lt Col Amlôt will touch on the history and development of the British Apache AH Mk1 helicopter and its capabilities as well as discussing its employment in both Libya and Afghanistan including the Jugroom Fort Rescue.

The Spring Open Exhibition 2017 ‘Inspired By Our Heritage’ Every year we present an Open Exhibition that gives local and regional artists a chance to have their work displayed at The Spring.

As one of the UK’s only integrated arts centres and museums, The Spring is very interested in combining heritage and artistic activity. We want to use the arts to bring our heritage stories to life and we are interested in how our local heritage can inspire artists.

Artists working in any medium are warmly invited to apply to display their work at The Spring. The main criterion for entries is that they must be inspired by The Spring’s Heritage Collections, or by stories that relate to local heritage. We can also accept work in the form of pictures and

photographs of local heritage sites.

The exhibition will take place from Monday 17 April to Friday 30 June in The Spring’s Mezzanine Gallery. Artists should consider the suitability of the work they plan to enter for the display space and the members of the public who will visit.

Some people may have heard of piriformis syndrome. We are going to give you some more information about what the piriformis muscle is, the symptoms and best treatments for piriformis syndrome.

Exercises for Piriformis Syndrome Piriformis Stretches There are two stretches for Piriformis:

What is Piriformis Syndrome?

Piriformis syndrome is a condition in which the piriformis muscle, located in the buttock region, tightens which then leads to buttock pain. Some people also describe pain, numbness and tingling down the back of their leg and sometimes into their foot.

This is because the piriformis muscle can also irritate the nearby sciatic nerve.

Symptoms of Piriformis Syndrome The most common symptoms are: • Buttock pain • Sciatic pain down the back of the thigh, calf and foot • Increased pain after prolonged sitting • Pain when walking up stairs or inclines • Reduced range of movement of the hip

Treatment Exercises combined with massage and soft tissue release is the best treatment for piriformis syndrome. Acupuncture is also an effective treatment to relax the piriformis muscle too. We offer acupuncture services at both our Havant and Basingstoke clinics.

Please be aware of your body and take advice from your GP before exercising or send an email to (enquiries@physiological.net) for advice and guidance. All the exercises and stretches should be pain free, please do not push into pain as you may irritate the sciatic nerve and make the pain worse.

In this photo we are stretching the left piriformis, so if you have left buttock pain this is the stretch to do, if you have right sided symptoms then do this stretch the other way.

Lie on your back with both knees bent and feet flat on the floor.

Rest the ankle of your left leg over your right knee.

Reach through the gap and pull your right thigh towards your chest and hold the stretch for thirty seconds.

Repeat two times, three times a day.

Again we are stretching the left piriformis, so if you have left buttock pain this is the stretch to do, if you have right sided symptoms then do this stretch on the other leg.

Lie on your back with both knees bent, feet flat on the floor and hip distance apart.

Pull your left knee up towards your chest, hold your knee with your right

hand and pull it towards the right shoulder • Hold the stretch for thirty seconds.

Repeat two times, three times a day.

The Hayling Lions FUN AT THE FAIR The Hayling Lions organised their annual Christmas Fair on Saturday November 26th at The Community centre in West Town.

The Lions had several stalls selling Christmas gifts, children’s toys, decorations, games and puzzles, a cake stall and, of course, there were refreshments.

Other charities, including The Rowans, The Air Ambulance, the Red Cross, Cats Protection, had amazing stalls full of gift ideas. There were also raffles and a tombola and the Guides offering a good selection of face painting pictures.

Thank you to all volunteers who gave so much of their time to prepare for the Fair and then spent the day making it a success.

Hayling Big Lottery Grant Hayling Island Community Centre is celebrating after being awarded almost half a million pounds through the Reaching Community Buildings Big Lottery Grant Fund. The application process has been lengthy and very detailed, taking almost two years in total.

The existing Community Centre is running at full capacity and desperately needs new space to meet demand for additional services and facilities required on the Island for residents.

This means that the Community Centre will be able to build a much needed extension in order to expand and develop to meet the needs of the Community.

The extension will contain a café area downstairs, with lift and stairs to the first floor where there will be a large space with acoustic room dividers which will allow the space to

become one, two or three smaller rooms as required.

The Centre has had to commit to raising their share as well, and thanks to the very generous support of local residents and business, they raised a staggering £90,000 so far. Some of this is from fund-raising events such as quiz nights, table top sales, concerts and coach trips. There have been some wonderful donations and more recently an anonymous donation of £7000. The Centre has also been running a "Buy a Brick" scheme too. This is an exciting way to help raise money and allow supporters to be part of creating the new facilities.

Each brick is £10 and the donor will receive a certificate and name entered on the role of honour after the completion of the project which will remain there with your name on it for generations to come.

E-Safety Film with The Spring Art Centre Twenty-four of our students took part in an E-Safety Day at the Spring Art Centre in Havant where they learned about the risks on websites such as Facebook, for instance accepting people we don’t know as friends, and posting personal details or locations online.

The students and pupils from our primary schools also took part in making a film to show different types of bullying (physical, verbal, cyber) and the effects it can have on young people. This film will be shown around other schools to education young people about the dangers of using the internet and the precautions they should take online.

In October some of our students attended the ‘premiere’ of the film at a very successful event at The Spring. This film has been endorsed by the Havant Police who attended the event, along with the Mayor of Havant.

Children in Need Activities After requests by our Student Voice Team, Warblington School was really excited to raise money for Children in Need 2016.

Year 8 students organised fundraising events throughout the week.

During break times individual tutor groups ran activities such as: How many sweets are in the jar? Name the teddy, The Crossbar Challenge and Beat the Goalie.

“We started planning and advertising the activities near the end of September. The first thing we did was to make posters and stick them up around the school.”

After school on Monday and Thursday some of the students took part in a litter pick. “Nearly all the litter down the cycle path was cleared in 45 minutes and our bags were heavy at the end.”

On Wednesday Tutor Group 8B arranged a cake sale, which was a great success, with students bringing in cakes they had made.

The cake sale alone raised nearly £176.00.

Friday was a Non-Uniform Day where staff and students payed a £1.00 donation to Children in Need to wear something yellow.

Good day to everyone from your favourite out and about reporter Hulky Bear at the Cat and Rabbit Rescue. It's that time of year again and here at the centre I am busy supervising decorations and making sure all my friends here are looked after during the holiday season. The staff and our lovely team of volunteers don't take time off but they make sure we all feel special giving us lots of love.

With the weather turning colder we have been moving all the Guinea pigs and rabbits to warmer accommodation it's a big job but moving those hutches keeps me looking in shape before I start eating those treats over the holidays.

Spira

This issue we would like you to meet the very cheeky Spira. She is 2 years old and been living at The Centre since the 14th January 2016 her original owner could no longer cope looking after her. When she arrived she came in with her three sons, these have now all found homes.

Poor Spira couldn’t be homed at the time as she was pregnant when she arrived and gave birth to six babies. She is now desperately looking to find a loving home with a male bunny she can bond with. She is on our foster care scheme as she does have sore eyes at times. This means

the Centre will provide you with some eye drops to give to her and our vet will look after her eyes at no cost to you. As Spira is very fluffy she does require grooming and will need an owner who will be able to give her the attention she needs. If you think you can offer Spira the new home she so desperately deserves, please do not hesitate to contact us here at the Centre.

We have a Viewing Day Saturday 28th January 12-2pm.

MP lobbies Cabinet minister over Pfizer answered the call! infrastructure requirements for new housing in Havant

Havant MP Alan Mak has lobbied a senior Cabinet minister to ensure funds for infrastructure are made available to areas in south Hampshire and across the country where new housing is planned.

Mr Mak was responding to queries raised by a group of residents during the consultation phase of Havant Borough Council’s Local Plan that existing infrastructure may need to be upgraded to take account of additional housing over the next 20 years. The Local Plan sets out plans

for new housing in the Borough between now and 2036.

Mr Javid responded by saying MPs like Alan Mak had made strong representations to him and the Chancellor on housing-related infrastructure, and that he was aware of Hayling Island's characteristics.

The Cabinet Minister said the Autumn Statement saw the Government announce new funds which local councils such as Havant Borough Council and Hampshire County Council can bid for.

These include a £2billion fund to support new housing infrastructure, £23billion for a new National Productivity Infrastructure Fund, some of which will go towards housing and infrastructure, and as part of that fund, £1.1billion is set aside to deliver upgrades on local roads and the public transport network. Mr Mak said he was committed to supporting local councils and other bodies like Solent LEP if they apply for national funds where local resources for infrastructure are not sufficient.

A group of employees from Pfizer returned to the Rowans Hospice sorting depot based in Farlington to support the charity. The sorting depot processes clothes and other items the public donate ready to be sold in the twenty-two shops across Portsmouth & SE Hampshire.

Scalia Lawrence, Production Team Leader at Pfizer says "we were very excited to be invited back to the Rowans processing centre and help this local charity. At some point all of us have known someone that has been helped by the Rowans support network and this is our way of giving back to this extremely worthwhile charity. As a local resident I would urge you to get involved and support your local charity in whatever way you can".

Adrianne Pike, Retail Operations Manager at Rowans Retail says "At our Farlington warehouse we process a range of clothes and bric-a-brac that the public have

Portsmouth Water Kingfisher Team runner up in WaterAid’s Innovators challenge This global challenge saw teams from across the UK, America and Australia choose either a water, sanitation or hygienefocused problem to overcome using innovative thinking, and fresh creative skills.

The aims of the ‘Water Innovators’ competition is to develop professional and core business skills, competing to solve real problems from the communities where WaterAid operates. In addition, all teams were tasked with raising a minimum of £3,000 each.

A team from Portsmouth Water, made up of staff from within the Customer Services and Water Quality departments took up the challenge and were tasked with crafting solutions for people in Cambodia.

Still recovering from decades of conflict, Cambodia is one of South East Asia’s poorest countries and access to water, sanitation and hygiene is very low. WaterAid has highlighted real situations for the teams to focus on, to help provide access to these basic necessities. The team of Tanya Bromley, Laura Cooper, Lianne Riggs, Rachel Dixon, Emma Camm and Jess Bethell called themselves ‘The Kingfishers.’

The Kingfishers have not only took on this challenge to provide some of the

poorest Cambodian communities with access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene for a brighter future, but managed to finish ‘runner up’ in the team category and were presented with the award by Deborah Meaden of Dragons Den fame at an awards ceremony in London.

To raise the target £3,000 for WaterAid, the Kingfishers carried out a summer of fundraising, involving sponsored mountain walks, football sweepstakes building up to a community festival at Staunton Country Park. The final Kingfishers event was a Cambodian Lunch put on for all Portsmouth Water employees, giving them an opportunity to taste food from a different culture, and immerse themselves in the world of Cambodia. When all the counting was complete, it was clear they surpassed their target £3,000, raising an amazing £6,000 for the campaign!

Emma Camm, the Chair of the Kingfishers said after receiving he award “As a small Water company, and a small team, the Kingfishers are immensely proud of the success of the campaign, showing that by working together as a company and a community, anything is achievable. The fact we have finished runner up is the icing on

the cake. Even if we if we won nothing we knew that by raising £6,000 we have made a real difference to people lives.”

Wild Hedges for Urban Edges at Park Havant is set to benefit from an exciting new initiative designed to give school children and residents access to free, healthy, seasonal food on their doorsteps through the planting of ‘wild’ urban hedges.

The Tree Council has partnered with Park Community School to plant a ‘Wild Hedges for Urban Edges’ hedge, which is funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. This forms the second phase of this new initiative from The Tree Council which aims to introduce town and city dwellers to the benefits of natural, wild hedges.

The project was launched at Southall Park on 5th December 2015 to coincide with The Tree Council’s National Tree Week.

This year’s planting also in National Tree Week has taken place with students from all year groups and is the second hedge to be planted as part of the project in Havant.

Havant Council Alderman Ralph Cousins, volunteers from TCV, teachers, students, Friends of Hermitage Stream and The Tree Council, together with Havant Tree Wardens planted fruit trees and over 360 hedging and fruit bushes along an existing bare fence line at the school grounds today which adjoins the newly created footpath along the Hermitage Stream.

Tree Council Programme Director Jon Stokes said ‘We normally think of urban hedges as formal clipped green boxes, but if planted with fruiting trees and bushes and left to grow wild, with a minimum of level of cutting, hedges can provide a fantastic

source of local, free, healthy food – for both people and wildlife.’ Alderman Ralph Cousins said: ‘The council is always looking for innovative projects where it can help the local community build something they can enjoy for generations to come, in the hope that it reintroduces young people to the idea of foraging and gets them involved with planting, pruning and picking the fruit they have helped to grow.’

Christopher Anders, Headteacher from Park Community School said ‘We were extremely keen for this project to go ahead to establish a link between the school restaurant and locally grown produce.

Healthy cooking is one of our main aims and to show students where and how their food is grown is vital to their education.’

Jon also commented that ‘Wild Hedges for Urban Edges’ ties with the growing interest in wild food foraging and community orchards in the UK and builds on The Tree Council’s Hedgerow Harvest campaign, which aims to reconnect communities with their local trees and hedgerows.’

The Tree Council strives to make trees matter to everyone and is committed to planting more trees of the right kind in the right places and inspiring people of all ages to care for the trees in their neighbourhoods.

My tip is to keep a mini Sharpie in your kit and scribble on the date when you open something. (This is also handy to discover how long that luxury moisturiser lasts.)

Using make up brushes can reduce the chance of bacteria forming in products but it’s important to clean and dry your tools monthly.

Most brands have a brush cleanser spray or solution in their range and are wise investment. Left unwashed, these can also harbour germs that you’re dusting over your skin.
