MARKS & SPENCER COMING TO HAVANT Its official - Hargreaves sign up M&S and Next to occupy new stores Hargreaves are pleased to announce that they have succeeded in securing two important anchor tenants, M&S and NEXT, on the second phase at Solent Retail Park, Havant, where construction is due to complete early in the New Year.

Months of negotiation have secured these two renowned operators which will result in hundreds of new jobs for the local economy. It is great news for shoppers in Havant further enhancing the retail offer at Solent Retail Park and providing a greater attraction for people visiting the town centre.

Dates have yet to be formally announced for the store openings, but it is anticipated this will be early in the New Year.

Next will vacate their existing store on phase one, with the opportunity of occupying this store now attracting interest from a number of national retailers keen to

be represented at this established and busy Retail destination.

Letting agents Lambert Smith Hampton acted jointly with Curson Sowerby and Partners, and John Butt - director of the retail division at LSH, commented: “The second phase is the culmination of four years of work and presents another significant step in the growth of the Solent Retail Park and the regeneration of the area adjacent to Havant Town Centre. I expect the scheme to dominate the eastern end of the M27 corridor, predicting that demand for units from other retail and trade occupiers to continue to grow.”

Construction of the building frame is well under way towards completion with the roof and cladding to be erected within the next few weeks.

Internal works will then proceed with the construction of full footprint mezzanine areas to accommodate the great selection of products both retailers will offer. Neville Andrew,: Chairman of the developer Hargreaves, commented: “ These additions to Solent Retail Park will add significantly to visitor attraction and extend what is already a very busy shopping centre investment.”

Postcode Publications Three Harbours Beef with The RSPB and Chichester Harbour Conservancy hold a successful free Walks & Talks day The event took place on the beautiful Coastal Grazing Marshes of Medmerry Marshes, Earnley, Chichester and was very well attended. Four groups toured the Medmerry managed re-alignment project and saw the benefits it offers, such as flood defense and the wide range of wildlife being encouraged, including Lapwing, Water Vole, Brown Hare and Avocet. The event also demonstrated the importance of the cattle grazing and how vital they are to managing grass height levels allowing wildlife to thrive.

James Parkin, Farming and Wildlife Officer from Chichester Harbour Conservancy said : ” It was a pleasure to support Three Harbours Beef during the walks and talks event at Medmerry Marshes recently. The continuation of low intensity grazing on the coastal grazing marshes is key for maintaining the rich wildlife interest which is present on them. If you are looking to buy sustainable, locally and traditionally produced beef, then Three Harbours Beef provides what you are looking for. ”

Three Harbours work with a network of local farmers and aim to ensure the viability of important grazing marshes by marketing high quality beef to local consumers and outlets. All the beef animals are born either on coastal plain farms or within the local area. Most are reared on their mother’s milk and grass for the first six months and, after weaning, their diet is predominantly the flower and herbal-rich salt tinted coastal grazing marshes, contributing greatly to the taste and quality of the meat. Cattle are reared naturally on marshes and pasture where they are allowed to mature slowly, enjoy two summers at grass and are kept until around two to two and a half years old – long by modern standards.

Hampshire Farmers’ Markets launches annual award - as voted for by the public The community interest, not-for-profit organisation, the Hampshire Farmers’ Markets, has just launched its own annual award and will be inviting its most influential audience, the public, to vote for The Best Food Product, The Best Drinks Producer, The Best Food to Take Away and The Best Personality from the wide range of suppliers who sell locally sourced produce at the HFM’s regular venues across the county. There will be a new award added this year for The Best Food Initiative, as decided by the HFM Board of Directors.

“The awards will give our market visitors the chance to vote for their favourite products and producers,” commented Alex Handford, HFM Business Manager. “So many of our visitors comment on how much they enjoy their market shopping experience because they get to talk directly to the local producers, have the assurance of knowing where the food comes from and that each producer has to meet a very strict criteria to sell their produce at our markets.”

markets on the producer’s stalls, at the HFM infor-mation desk and voting on-line on the HFM website. The voting will close on the 7th September and market visitors voting forms will be entered into a prize draw for a HFM Ham-per full of local produce, plus two tickets to the HFM Awards Dinner at the Brookfield Hotel at Emsworth on Tuesday 22nd September, as part of the British Food Fortnight celebra-tions, where the winning HFM Producers will receive their awards.

“Our producers really appreciate the support they receive from our market visitors.

Buying local not only helps the local rural economy, but also helps to secure local rural jobs too. We are all looking forward to celebrating with the award winners during British Food Fortnight,” concluded Alex Handford.

Chichester Harbour Conservancy staff honoured by national award

Two members of Chichester Harbour Conservancy staff have had their combined 78 years’ service honoured with the Landscapes for Life Award. This national award from the National Association of Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty recognises those who have contributed 20 years or more to the conservation and enhancement of AONBs. Philip (Sid) Kennett has been the face of Chichester Harbour in Emsworth for 47 years.

Richard Craven, the Harbour Master and Acting Conservancy Manager, said “Sid really has taken ownership of the Emsworth part of the Harbour.

Postcode Publications Southbourne Men’s Shed ‘New Club on the block’ are awarded Generous Council Grants

If you have ever wondered why there is so much excitement about the new club on the block then look no further than a visit to enjoy the friendly company of a group of older boys who like the sociality of meeting up for a chat, joining in a group activity or just chilling out with a newspaper and a free ‘cuppa’.

Southbourne Men’s Shed has recently been awarded generous financial grants from West Sussex County Council Community Initiative and the Prevention and Well-being funds to improve its wellequipped workshop. There is no competition, no challenges, no ceremony and very few rules in this new social club which is just one of many opening up for retired or nearly-retired men of the area.

At Southbourne Men’s Shed recent activities include landscaping an area at

Bourne Community College, refurbishment of a dilapidated large car trailer that all members can now use, renewing the seating at St John’s Church and fitting kitchen furniture at Age Concern, Southbourne.

This week, some members volunteered and have built a ramp to allow wheelchair users access to their clubroom. Planning consent now means that the ‘Shedders’ will set about building a new shed on a patch of ground nearby.

Everyone likes to get away sometimes and these guys are no exception. There is a welcome for all older men no matter what their background and the Shed door is open to men who have worked in all trades and professions, skilled or unskilled. They do not have a bank manager or an astronaut…yet!

Southbourne Men’s Shed is grateful to many helpful local organisations who recognise the benefits of men socialising. Westbourne Open Gardens Westbourne Open Gardens event in June was a Resounding Success and a true team effort!

Anyone trying to navigate their way round the village of Westbourne on Sunday 14th June would have had difficulty contending with the vast number of enthusiastic garden viewers.

WI ‘Vintage Teas’ were appreciated all day and served with style and care in the Scout marquee erected on the Rectory lawn.

The final sum raised will be in excess of £11,000 (£4,500 more than achieved in 2012). Westbourne Scouts; Westbourne WI; The Restoration of the Westbourne War Memorial Fund; Westbourne Allotments Association; Westbourne Primary School and the Linda Newell Memorial Fund in Emsworth.

As a committee we agreed that the event showed Westbourne Village as a fine community. The sun shone, garden owners had preened their gardens to perfection and too many people and organisations to be named here had generously sponsored or donated services or raffle prizes.

Big thank you go to all the garden owners, businesses that donated raffle prizes, volunteers, our sponsors, advertisers and of course all our visitors.

How can I protect myself and my children from my abusive partner?

If you are in an abusive relationship, the Court can provide you with assistance in the form of a Non-Molestation Order. A Non-Molestation Order is a Court order forbidding a person from using or threatening violence, harassing, pestering and/or intimidating another. This sort of order can also include a

provision not to attend at a particular property or within a certain radius and can be extended to cover any children, if necessary.

Breach of this order is a criminal offence and the police would have the power to arrest the person breaching the terms of the order.

1. What constitutes abuse?

The Courts recognise that there are many different forms of abuse. This can be physical, emotional, verbal even sexual or financial. In essence a person who is made to feel intimidated, belittled and/or controlled on a regular basis is potentially a victim of domestic abuse.

2. How quickly can I obtain a Non-molestation Order?

The Courts are very strict in granting a Non-Molestation Order as they are very restrictive orders. In some situations, it may be necessary for a letter before action to be sent prior to taking Court action.

This would consist of a letter warning the abusive person of their behaviour and making them aware of an intention to apply to the Courts for an order if the behaviour continues.

In some situations however, it is not always appropriate to forewarn an abusive partner and in more severe circumstances, it is possible for an urgent application to be made to the Court on the same day, without giving the abusive person any notice.

3. Is there legal aid for NonMolestation Orders?

Yes. Provided you are eligible on your income and capital, there is legal aid available for this type of order.

Research shows that if you are over the age of 60 you are at a higher risk of dying in a fire in your home. If you are aged 65 and over, you are twice as likely to die in a fire compared to the average for all ages.

This risk increases with certain lifestyle factors or if you have a disability or mobility issue.

Turn off the heat and leave to cool.

• Use a thermostat controlled electric deep fat fryer. They can`t overheat.

• What to do if a pan catches fire : • Don`t take any risks. turn off the heat if it is safe to do so. Never throw water over it.

Fires from cooking appliances have consistently resulted in around half all accidental fires in the home in England. The 2013/14 statistics report that such fires resulted in 24 fatalities and over half of all non - fatal casuaities (2,803 of 5,436 ) Cooking Fire Safety Measures • Having sufficient detection equipment and escape plans is of high importance • Avoid leaving children in the kitchen alone . Keep matches and saucepan handles out of their reach.

• Make sure saucepan handles don`t stick out - so they don`t get knocked off the stove.

• Take care if you`re wearing loose clothing - this can easily catch fire.

Spirit-of-The-South are in the Pink, and supporting Cancer Research UK

Along with hundreds of others, men, women, and children, we enjoyed the fund raising event on Saturday 11th of July, at the Mountbatten Sports Centre, Alexandra Rd, Ports on behalf of Cancer Research UK. Our part was to welcome the runners / walkers as they entered the marquee for lunch, having completed their circuits of the course. This was a pleasure for us as we can sing for England, so to speak, and we greeted them with one of our favourite fun warm-up songs "Gee it's Good To See Ya".

The gentle warm-up songs are not only fun, they prepare the vocal chords and the lungs for singing. Breathing is good! This was followed by "Amazing Grace" which was very apt as these survivors are truly

amazing. We think our choice of songs was very fitting, including, "Can You Feel The Love" from the Lion King, and Leanard Coen’s Hallelujah. It was a lovely part of the day. Our Deputy Musical Director was Gillian Rose-Smith, who has a wonderful talent for conducting, while avoiding people, it was so busy. All in all it was a pleasure to support this cause, as we do every year.

Sunday, 19th of July, saw three of our girls, me included, Sandra Strawn, Lucy Van De Ven, and Jackie Stanley, taking part in the 5 k Race For Life at Southsea, also raising money for Cancer Research UK. We had a fantastic brisk walk around the course completing it in 55 minutes. Everything was perfect, sunshine, breeze, good company, and everyone Hi- Fived us which was great. Time well spent.

Park Community School news Tanzania Park students and staff were lucky enough to take a life changing trip to Tanzania with the charity Grassroots.We interviewed a member of staff, here is what she had to say: Is it a long term project? Grassroots have been working in Tanzania for over 20 years, and have taken groups from various different schools. This was Park's first trip, but we want to create an ongoing link with Grassroots and Tanzania. What made you decide to do it?

Barney, one of our pastoral workers in the school, and the family leaders came up with the idea in the first place, the intention was to provide pupils with the opportunity to go on an amazing trip, helping others and broadening their horizons. Where did you go and what did you do? We spent most of our time in Mbeya, in the South West of Tanzania, we delivered blankets and food parcels to the poorest families and helped feed children as part of the Grassroots feeding programme. We visited secondary schools, delivered chickens, made and delivered water filters, helped enrol children onto the sponsorship programme and spent the last day on the beach near Dar Es Salaam. How long were you there for? 10 days in total. How many students and staff went? We had four staff plus Sharon, the Grassroots founder, and 13 Year 10 students. My personal quote: Our visit to Tanzania was incredible - a powerful experience. We have all come back with a changed attitude to what matters and to what we really need. I was amazed and inspired by the Tanzanian children we met, but also by our students who embraced every challenge with open minds and worked hard without a single moan. I feel very privileged to have taken part in the trip and hope to go back one day! - Sophie Ryle.

Challenge Week July is when students spend a week out of their comfort zone and experience things that they would not normally face in the usual school day, we call it Challenge Week and here is what happened.

It started with Year 7s using the first two days creating a play for a day, resulting in a performance of the Lion King which was shown to a very appreciative audience of pupils from Riders school. Year 7s were also able to explore different cultures and languages at the end of the week and joined in flamenco and Copoeira lessons.

Housebuilder Visits Park Representatives from national house builders Barratt Homes visited Park to give an assembly to students on the benefits of a career in the construction industry. Barratt Homes staff also worked directly with groups of students on building homes for the 21st Century.

Awards Evening the week with a huge litter picking expedition around the local area on a community scheme to keep their own environment spick and span.

Year 10s definitely say that the driving extravaganza was the best bit of their week. They were given an opportunity to drive a car and learn key driving skills.

They embraced this with enthusiasm and want to do more. They had already learnt about safety features in a car in a crash test science day. They also had a day reflecting on their recent work experience and where they want to be when they leave school.

Year 8 highlights were a day looking at rocket science and shooting off their own rockets, creating their own crystal maze style problems for Year 6 from Riders School to solve and finishing off with making fashion out of trash‌ trashion!!

Recently held in our new theatre, the annual awards evening for outstanding students was attended

by The Mayor of Havant, Councillor Leah Turner and Paralympic medallist, Ian Rose.

Students from each year received a medal, certificate and book voucher. There were also three Headteacher Awards to Jasmine Bone YR7, Piper Willoughby YR8, Fatoumata Ceesay YR9 and the presentation of the Yvonne Weeks Trophy to YR8 student Frankie McMullan.

For many Year 9s the Thursday was their highlight when they went on the hottest day of the week to Staunton Country Park to develop and challenge their orienteering and problem solving skills. They finished

As part of the National Watersports Festival, Havant Borough Council is offering heavily subsided watersports taster sessions purely for Havant Borough residents on Friday 4th, Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th September. The cost per session is £10.

Those taking part need to be aged 8 or over, and will receive one hour of tuition from fully qualified instructors in windsurfing, stand-up paddle boarding or kayaking. All equipment including wetsuits and buoyancy aids are provided, and free parking is included too.

The National Watersports Festival – which runs from Friday 4th to Sunday 6th September - is sponsored by Havant Borough Council, and is the largest event of its kind in the United Kingdom. This is the tenth year of the event, which started initially as the National Windsurfing Festival. The event now includes kitesurfing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. A festival with live music and themed parties will also be running as part of the event.

Look after your kidneys this autumn Your kidneys perform a vital function, filtering the blood to remove excess waste from your body and producing urine to remove that waste.

Sometimes, however, the urine becomes saturated with a mineral that it can’t fully dissolve. A kidney stone is formed – and when it causes a blockage it is often described as one of the most painful conditions you can experience.

“Some of my patients describe a pain worse than childbirth,” says Mr Stephen Keoghane, consultant urological surgeon practicing at Spire Portsmouth Hospital.

As many as five to 10 in every 100 people are estimated to be affected by pain related to kidney stones at some point in their lives, a number that is increasing

drastically according to a study published by Mr Keoghane.

There are some simple steps that you can take to reduce the risk of kidney stones.

“Drink enough fluid to produce pale, clear urine,” says Mr Keoghane. “There is a relationship between dehydration and stone formation, so people may be more at risk after periods of hot weather.”

The liquid intake will vary depending on the climate, but in the United Kingdom he recommends an average intake of three to four litres per day.

Cantemus Choir’s Summer Concert

Alan Mak MP Report on my work locally and in Westminster Havant MP Alan Mak reports back on his work locally and in Westminster I hope PO newspaper readers managed to have a break over summer.

For me, the Parliamentary recess was an opportunity to spend time at home in Havant, focus on local work without the distraction of Westminster, and reflect on the highlights from the last few months.

My Maiden Speech in the House of Commons came during the EU Referendum debate, where I was proud to talk up local successes, from Havant’s ambitious regenerations plans and Emsworth’s food festival to Hayling’s rural charm and Leigh Park’s community spirit. I’ve had some excellent Ministerial meetings to discuss local issues too, including with the Defence Secretary; the Rail Minister; the Education Secretary; and the Planning Minister.

I made my début at Prime Minister’s Questions – the most high-profile Westminster event – where I welcomed the 48% drop in local unemployment since 2010, and welcomed the Summer Budget which cuts taxes for working people, clamped down on welfare abuse, kept fuel duty frozen, and introduced a new £9 Living Wage.

Another highlight was being selected for the prestigious Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme which enables a small group of MPs to spend a year gaining “work experience” with one of our Services, in my case the Royal Navy. I will keep readers posted about my experiences over the next 12 months working with our Navy personnel. I will also be serving on the Commons committee examining English Votes for English Laws, and I’ve been elected to chair Parliament’s all-party group for entrepreneurship, backing new and growing businesses.

Locally, I’ve enjoyed engaging with some of the schools, businesses and community groups that bring our area to life. From presenting certificates at Purbrook and Mengham Junior Schools to listening to pupils sing at Mill Rythe school and answering questions at Fairfield Infants; our local schools are doing very well.

I‘ve also launched the Havant Education Leaders Forum (HELF) to bring together all our local secondary headteachers to share ideas and continue raising education standards.

A growing local economy with more jobs is vital, and I met with Havant Borough Council to discuss the ambitious growth plans at Market Parade and Dunsbury Hill Farm which will create many new local jobs. Treasury Chief Secretary Greg Hands MP (Chancellor George Osborne’s deputy) also accepted my invitation to meet a group of local business leaders at Havant Rugby Club, and he praised them for the contribution they make, including to local charities; for example, I enjoyed presenting the prizes at the Langstone Raft Race organised by the Ship Inn. Similarly, Northney Farm hosted this year’s Hayling Businessmen’s Club summer BBQ, whilst I enjoyed welcoming back our Paris to Hayling Cycle Riders at the Olive Leaf pub. All these groups and businesses reflect the strength of our community spirit.

Thank you to local residents for the support you continue to give me, and I will continue working hard for you locally and in Westminster.

Cantemus Choir gave their summer concert at St James’s Church, Emsworth, on Saturday June 27th. The concert was billed as “English music for a summer evening” and featured the music of English composers from the 13th to 20th centuries. Musical Director William Waine conducted, sporting a bow tie in the red cross on white design of the English flag. Christopher Pilgrim accompanied the choir on the piano, with solos by baritone Daniel Tate.

The programme was grouped in sections beginning with the end of winter, including the ancient round “Summer is a-coming in”, moving through springtime, with rounds and songs by Byrd, Hilton and Henry VIII, depicting mirth and play, to mystical midsummer, represented by Vaughan Williams’ folk song “Linden Lea” and his “Five Mystical Songs”, and ending with the calm contentment of Pilkington’s “Rest Sweet Nymphs”, Stanford’s “Heraclitus” and Sullivan’s “The Long Day Closes”.

Along the way there were Gilbert and Sullivan songs from The Grand Duke, The

Yeoman of the Guard and the Pirates of Penzance, in which soprano Janet Hillman from the choir joined the baritone soloist in a duet. Many songs featured birds, such as the contrasting pieces by Stanford – “The Bluebird” (with its sublime soaring soprano line) - “The Blackbird” by the Beatles, and a setting of “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square”, arranged by the conductor.

The concert was considerably enhanced by the rich baritone voice of soloist Daniel Tate, whose performance in the Vaughan Williams especially showed he was equally at home in loud and soft passages.

One of the highlights of the evening was a piano duet in which conductor William Waine and accompanist Christopher Pilgrim played a rousing version of Percy Grainger’s “Country Gardens” from which the concert’s title “In an English Country Garden” was taken.

Food and Wine Chilled Reds Jonathan Rogers of The Solent Wine Experience looks at Red Wines to Chill When the weather is warm and sunny there is nothing better than a chilled glass of dry, crisp refreshing white wine or a soft fruity rose full of summer fruit flavours.

Sitting out in the garden with the sausages sizzling away on the BBQ sipping these wines is my idea of a perfect summer’s day.

But what if you don’t fancy these typical summer wines? What if you fancy something different, away from the norm?

Historically we were always told to drink red wines at room temperature, certainly not from the fridge. However, chilling reds can be a great alternative to the normal summer wines and some can certainly be just as refreshing. I always tell people drink wine however they want to. It’s all about enjoying the wine so you do whatever you want and I remember back in 2003 I was on a buying trip in the Languedoc Roussillon region in the south of France and that particular year was extremely hot. Every time we went to a restaurant, the reds came out chilled.

The best reds to chill are the light fruity styles. Full bodied reds can work but is better if they have a certain amount of fruit balanced with them. Drier, tannic reds don’t tend to be as good. Don’t over chill any wine as that will diminish the flavour, and try not to put ice in the wine as that will simply water it down.

The best red wines to chill are from the Pinot Noir grape. These wines tend to be softer and fruitier and lighter on the palate.

The grape is very delicate and thin skinned so you don’t get a huge amount of colour extraction and therefore they don’t have as much tannin. The regions that grow some of

the best Pinot Noir are Burgundy in France, Chile grows amazing fruit driven wines especially from the Bio Bio (so good they named it twice!) region in the very south of the country, and Otago on the south Island in New Zealand has great complex Pinot’s with character. We are also growing great Pinot Noir here in the UK although most of it is going into our amazing sparkling wines.

Other grapes that work well for chilling are Grenache, Carignan and Syrah. These are the dominant grapes grown in the Languedoc along with Spain who also grow a huge amount of Grenache.

With only a few more weeks of proper summer left and the promise of August being hot, it’s worth experimenting with some reds to chill and experience something different.

Food Fiend Experience Recipe column - by Kathy Fitchett

The Spanish Frittata is a versatile, healthy, tasty, low fat dish which is easy to make and can be eaten hot or cold.You can use a variety of vegetables but in this recipe I have chosen sliced peppers, onions, spinach and Charlotte potato. It’s important to use a waxy potato which retains its shape and consistency after cooking and doesn’t breakdown. Salad potatoes with or without skins are great for this.

You can substitute sweet potato in place of the salad potatoes and use any vegetable which takes your fancy- peas and beans will need to be blanched before adding to the egg mixture. To reduce the amount of fat I have used grated Parmesan but you can add some grated cheddar into the egg mixture as well if desired.

This is a great dish which can be enjoyed for lunch or a light supper served with salad.

Better still cut it into slices as a starter for a dinner party!

1. Slice potato thinly, drizzle with olive oil and cook in microwave for 6 minutes

2. Cook onion and potato and sliced peppers

Ingredients 4 eggs 1 pack spinach ½ red pepper 1 large onion 250 grams waxy potato Handful of parsley and chives 2 cloves garlic 3/4 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese Method: 1. Cook spinach in the microwave in a glass dish for 3 minutes, squeeze out excess water from leaves 2. Wash potatoes and use food processor with slicing tool to slice or if doing by hand try to make slices uniform and less than 0.5 cm thick. Place on plate and drizzle with olive oil and cook in microwave for 6 minutes. Turning half way through to ensure even cooking 3. Thinly slice pepper and onion and chop garlic 4. Roughly chop parsley and chives 5. Heat 22 cm non-stick frying pan with 2 tablespoon olive oil add onion. Cook for 5 minutes then add sliced pepper and cook for 3 minutes. Add cooked sliced potato and chopped garlic and cook for further 3 minutes. Remove from the heat 6. Break eggs into bowl and beat well.

Season with pepper and salt. Stir in chopped herbs and then add cooked potatoes and vegetables 7. Heat frying pan and add 1 tablespoon of oil, use silicone brush to ensure oil is spread over base and sides of the pan 8. Pour egg mixture with vegetables into pan and spread evenly in pan. Sprinkle grated Parmesan on top of the mixture. Cook on a medium heat for 5 minutes 9. Heat grill and place pan with egg and vegetable under this and cook until golden brown- minimum 5 minutes 10. Carefully lift Frittata with a spatula onto plate (or invert onto plate if feeling brave!) and serve with a side salad.

3. Add cooked vegetable to egg mixture and chopped herbs, mix well

Heat frying pan with olive oil and add egg and vegetable mixture

Place pan under heated grill and cook until golden brown

AUCTIONEER & ANTIQUES ENTHUSIAST HILARY BOLT on COLLECTABLE CARN POTTERY Over the last 20 years I’ve been lucky enough to turn a life-long interest in “old things” into my current day jobs – auctioneering in Emsworth Auctions and running an antiques & collectables shop, Emsworth Antiques Etc. in the town’s West Street.

I promised to tell you a bit more about the work of rising star of Carn Pottery ‘collectables’ which we stock in the shop; in particular the Owls & Pussy Cats.

Most of John Beusman’s work is designed to be used : vases, containers or lamps. Whilst both owls and cats appear as decorative motifs on various sized pots and vases (plate 1), the earliest design, code 1 belonged to a range of small, solid owls he produced up until the early 70s (plate 2). Standing only a couple of inches high, they are too small to be stamped or signed so recognition rests on experience.

Aged about 16 John produced these small owls in a variety of glazes and colours, taking the idea from an established potter friend. I have an example of one such scarce non-Carn owl in my own collection as well as a number of John’s.

However, one of the most charming Carn Pottery figures is Mowser (plate 3), the heroine of the Cornish ‘Mousehole Cat’ legend. She has a fish with her because – thanks to her skill and loyalty – her pet fisherman Tom managed to survive a terrifying storm at sea and brought home such a phenomenal catch that he saved his fellow Mousehole folk from ruin and starvation. So in gratitude for her valiant work Mowser always has a fish for her supper.

Thus the tradition and landscape of Cornwall continue to feature in John Beusman’s work, which is still developing – new shapes, motifs and glazes. I wonder what he will do next?

WATERLOOVILLE BOOK Steve Jones, the local historian of the Havant area as produced a new booklet edited by Ralph Cousins called 'The Early Years of Waterlooville 1810-1910 and the History of the Forest of Bere'.

The ninety-page A4 special edition celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo.

Steve tells of the turnpike road from Portsmouth to Sheet and that it took between nine and ten hours to travel from Portsmouth to London on the stage along roads that were not exactly the most comfortable.

The Forest of Bere at that time covered most of east Hampshire. In 1800 the forest measured 16,000 acres with 10,000 acres of open forest.

When the Forestry Commission took over in 1919 there was only 1,450 acres of

woodland but since then through purchase and leasing now consists of 3,500 acres.

The Heroes of Waterloo public house has the legend that it was named after soldiers who rested there on their way home from the famous battle.

Steve tells us it the legend is somewhat fanciful and that the pub is most probable named after the battle itself.

The present pub is not the original it being a few yards further west.

The book tells of the long history of St George's Church in the town centre and also of the many traders, pubs, hotels, characters and other legends that have grown over the years.

With over fifty photographs and a few maps the book is excellent value at just £6.

It is available from Waterlooville library and Havant Museum.

The Hayling College’s Glee club and a selection of other pupils are very excited to announce that they are set to go to Ypres in November. They will perform in front of an estimated four thousand people to commemorate the soldiers that died in the First World War. They will sing a song created by the Head of Music, Mr Neil Ogley. They have already performed in front

The Hayling College were supposed to perform at the Menin gate in Ypres on the 1st of July 2015, however it was postponed because of the strikes in France which meant that it was not possible to safely get to Belgium.

All the children who were going to Belgium were deeply disappointed with the French dock workers and their ferry strike. This stopped the children from being able to get to Ypres and so the Hayling College postponed the trip.

Amazingly the teachers arranged all children involved in the Belgium trip to meet HRH Prince Charles himself.

This was an amazing opportunity for all the pupils involved and one we will remember forever.

Postcode Publications RYA Sailing Development Manager gains first-hand experience of HISC’s Get Racing Club

Hannah Cockle, the RYA’s Sailing Development Manager joined the HISC Get Racing Club to experience first-hand the ‘club within a club’ that aims to encourage non-racers to get out on the water with volunteer led coaching and fun, informal racing.

The HISC International Moth Class led the first Get Racing Club in May with Ricky Tagg heading up the team, ably assisted by Graham Simmonds, Ollie Holden, Tim Penfold and Mike Lennon. Special guest Hannah Cockle, the RYA’s Sailing Development Manager joined the group, trapezing on board a Laser 2 with Get Racing Club member Tony Combes.

Hannah commented, “Everyone was so helpful on the water and I really enjoyed myself. I will certainly come along again!”

The popular Merlin Rocket Class led the second of the May HISC Get Racing events. For many of the HISC Get Racing Club participants it was the windiest conditions they had experienced and with only a few capsizes it was clear that skill levels have improved.

The next Get Racing Club event will take place on Saturday 27th June 2015 with the RS 200 class taking the helm. Trans-Gendered Show for Havant Youth Theatre The swansong for this year’s departing senior members of Dynamo Youth Theatre is a rollicking, all-female, fast-paced version of Shakespeare’s evergreen comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The September show traditionally showcases the talents of the departing sixth formers and is their final performance before they leave for university, work or apprenticeships.

Unusually this year, all the seniors are girls and they are relishing the opportunity to get to grips with a multiplicity of roles, most of them male.

The members, from Havant, Hayling, Bedhampton and Langstone, will play fairies, aristocrats and ‘rude mechanicals’, the most famous of which is Bottom the weaver, who has an ass’s head bestowed upon him.

Bottom is the unlikely recipient of the Fairy Queen’s affections, but survives his brush with the supernatural to perform at the Duke of Athens’ wedding.

The play is adapted and directed by local award-winning

writer Lucy Flannery.

Dynamo Youth Theatre accepts applications for membership from 11-18 year olds and meets every Monday during term time between 5.30 and 7.30pm.

What’s on

Partnerships, and Participation are key words in this year’s WemsFest – the 4th to be staged by the Emsworth-based arts organization from 1–18 October.

Partnerships have been fostered with several organisations in the area in order to give more weight and promotion behind individual events. For example The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre in Havant has been able to participate in the nationally celebrated Black History Month for the first time through WemsFest involvement in the co-promotion of a concert by Les Freres Guisse from Senegal (Oct 8).

WemsFest marketing will help Tuppenny Barn reach a much wider audience for their literary and music events, and, conversely, Emsworth Business Association will use WemsFest as a means of attracting more people into the town to participate in Great British Food Fortnight.

Participatory events aimed at social interaction range from hands-on creative writing workshops to an intergenerational board game afternoon, and the Emsworth Scrabble Championship, plus walks, talks, a mass photo-shoot, and the commemoration of the Emsworth’s iconic gasholder !

In amongst all of this there’s a varied range of music and theatre events which include concerts by Judie Tzuke, the Big Topp Ska Band, Americana artists Bettysoo & Curtis McMurtry, Lem & The White Fire, bluesman Eddie Martin, Congo’s Lokito Ya Congo, and cellist Ella Rundle. Theatre performances include WemsFest’s own company performing Racton Follies 4, and commemorating P G Wodehouse’s involvement in the town with a specially adapted version of A Damsel in Distress, and actress Amanda Waring in her onewoman show ‘For the Love of Chocolate’.

HIADS presents ‘The Salt of the Earth’ by John Godber at the Station Theatre on Hayling Island from Friday 2nd to Friday 9th October.

This richly humorous and moving play is set in the West Yorkshire coalfields spanning three generations from 1947 to 1988. It captures the ambitions, joys, fears and disappointments of sisters Annie and May Parker.

It is also a ‘coming-of-age story’ for May’s academic son Paul, but told with a wider perception than just that of the young man who breaks away from his working class background.

We first see May and her sister Annie as giddy young women who marry Harry and Roy two strapping young men who work in the pits.

Their lives progress through the years not in the way they would have expected or necessarily wanted and it is thrown into stark relief by May’s son Paul’s growing success.

Despite his college education and penchant for writing Paul cannot quite let go of his working-class background. He tries to retain a connection to Tosh, his best friend, who now works in the coal pits; and when he sees Kay, his old girlfriend, he longs for her all over again.

Paul's final break with May and Harry could be seen as a young man's escape from his ignorant, bitter parents but Godber has shared the experiences of this family and shown the parents in the context of their lives together. He weaves a rich tapestry of family life in this play.

Arun & Chichester (Air) Enthusiasts Society Monday 21st September - 1900 for 1930 hrs - ‘A Concorde Evening’ with Capt Jock Reid Our speaker for this evening is Captain Jock Reid, former Chief Test Pilot for the Civil Aviation Authority and a Concorde pilot over 14 years. Jock will give 2 talks, the first entitled “Life in the Fast Lane, Concorde from the Passenger’s Seat”; this talk reminisces about the advantages and privileges of the Concorde Passenger Experience, an experience sadly now denied to us all. In his second lecture entitled “The Paris Accident and Subsequent Return to Service” Capt Reid discusses the causes of that dreadful accident and the modifications and flight tests necessary to have the aeroplane successfully returned to passenger service.

What’s on Havant Symphony Orchestra Havant Symphony Orchestra is returning to Hayling Island to bring their inimitable blend of popular classics to the Community Centre.

The concert opens with Weber’s overture, ‘Der Freischutz’, which starts with an utterly enchanting horn solo and ends in a blaze of C major that can’t fail to have everyone smiling.

Chopin’s much loved Piano Concerto No2 is performed by internationally acclaimed Alexander Ullman who is currently completing his Masters in performance at The Royal College of Music.

During his studies, Alexander has won numerous International Competition Awards.

The evening concludes with Tchaikovsky Symphony No5 which has to be one of the most exciting symphonies ever composed with its brooding beginning, leitmotifs and final triumph.

The evening will be presided over by Colin Jagger, University of Portsmouth’s Director of Music who has worked with Havant Symphony Orchestra to spellbinding effect for several years.

The Concert promises to be a wonderful evening and it is a fantastic opportunity to experience classical music played by a well renowned orchestra on your doorstep.

Emsworth Artists Summer Exhibition The Emsworth Artists are holding their Annual Exhibition of Art in the the Mountford Room at the Community Centre on the Bank Holiday Weekend in August.

The Exhibition is open to the Public from Saturday 29th August until Wednesday 2nd September from 10.00am to 5.00pm and Entry is free!

We have over 50 participating local Artists of a very high standard and all the works exhibited will be for sale.

We are really lucky to have Claire Redgrave donating a painting this year for the Raffle.

We hold two Competitions each yearone for the most popular exhibit- (the Sydney J Stokes Award) and secondly for the most popular Watercolour- (the Mountford Award) and for these we ask our visitors to the Exhibition to place their votes. Bench Theatre score a double with Ladies Down Under The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre, Havant Sequels are rare in the world of theatre but Havant based Bench Theatre came up trumps with their performance of the Amanda Whittington comedy about four women who go on a holiday of a lifetime to Australia. The play is a sequel to Lady’s Day which was performed by Bench in 2013.

The new play picks up with the four main characters, Pearl, Jan, Shelley and Linda, who fresh from a £500,000 win at the horses embark upon an Australian adventure. The characters are strongly defined and wellacted by the amateur cast. Pearl is the mother figure, an older woman who has recently retired from the fish factory where the women had all worked. Shelley is big, brash and bold in her attitude and dress sense. Jan is timid and insecure whilst Linda is down to earth and wants to help everyone.

Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez, Christopher Walken, Al Pacino... and a very underrated film.

Ben Affleck is a killer, doing various dirty jobs for criminals, but this time he's assigned with a partner, Jennifer Lopez.

This film deserves way more positive reviews than it has. The characters are fun to be with, and there's some great cinematography. Also, it's quite funny and really does hold your interest throughout. On the downside, it is a little predictable, but that is only a very minor quibble. I had low expectations because of the negative reviews and they were very happily exceeded. Being a crime romance,

there isn't a lot of crime perpetrated, which leaves time for the characters to develop and a relationship to grow. A very good film.

Hostel: Part III This is the same story from the previous two films, just located in Las Vegas where the underground gambling circuit is still torturing people for money.

Compared to the two first films this goes light on the gore, with even the torture scenes not containing that much. The violence is much more cut away from than the previous instalments. It's still quite interesting, though, and does hold your attention through to the end. It also offers some shocks from the torture, with the first scene being the main stand-out, and also the most graphic. It does have that straight-toDVD feel, but it's still alright.

The play was staged with virtually no scenery, just backdrops indicating a plane or an Australian flag. Things go wrong for the hapless ladies as soon as they arrive in Oz with the non-appearance of Jan’s boyfriend, Joe. The ladies then embark on an odyssey

of self-exploration as they traverse Australia in search of adventure. Surfer’s Paradise turns out to be anything but and they quickly move on to the Outback in search of enlightenment. The four friends squabble about money and the meaning of life.

Jan and her elusive boyfriend Joe finally meet up at Uluru/Ayers Rock and quickly become reconciled. Pearl and Shelley discover the delights of wacky baccy and divulge deep secrets. The play concludes with a glorious comic interlude set during

the Sydney Mardi Gras Gay Pride event.

Zack Cuthbertson and Callum West were outstanding as the campest, most outrageous drag queens ever to grace the stage of The Spring.

There is even a happy ending. The packed Havant audience enjoyed 2 hours of well-acted comedy but the play also worked on different levels leaving us to ponder upon the importance of friendship and the fact that money does not always buy happiness.

VE Day celebrations continue as Mengham Junior School achieves their bronze STARS award

Pupils at Mengham Junior School have been working hard over the past months to encourage even more pupils to travel in a sustainable way to school. Recognition for this work comes through the national STARS scheme, run by Modeshift, which was rolled out to all schools in England at the end of 2014.

Since 2005, the school has managed to reduce the number of regular car users coming to school by 10% from approximately 50% to 40%. To achieve this, the school have been working with a number of travel initiatives and been supported by the School Travel Planning Team at Hampshire County Council (HCC).

Initiatives introduced so far include the Living Streets Walk Once a Week scheme

which is being run in combination with several Park and Stride sites which encourages to park a little further from the school, at the Hayling Billy Pub for example, and walk the last 5-10 minutes.

Parents are being encouraged to use the back entrance and park further afield to relieve congestion in the car park and on Elm Grove. Safe travel is now on the school curriculum, the school has participated in the HCC Junior Road Safety Officer scheme as well as the Hayling Cycle school fun day and various competitions including designing a poster for a Safe Halloween.

On Tuesday 30th June, as a reward for the school’s work towards a sustainable travel plan, HCC worked with school to organise a ‘VE Day’ themed walk to school from St Mary’s Road car park, in a move designed to get the walking children noticed and to motivate others to join in. This was followed by two World War themed theatre shows put together by drama in education specialists ‘Histrionics’, linking the school’s chosen theme with sustainable travel messages.

Headteacher Wendy Bolton and

sustainable travel champion Gill Goodwin commented, “At Mengham Junior School, we value our environment and we value walking. We are encouraged by the number of children persuading their parents to leave the car further away from school so they can walk, cycle or scoot the rest of the way.”

Hampshire County Council's School Travel Planning Manager, Helen Harris, added: “The school is a deserved winner of this Histrionics event. By taking advantage of all of the initiatives and support available to them, we are delighted that they have earned their bronze Modeshift STARS award and the children are much more aware that exercise is an excellent way to start and end each school day.”

The Modeshift STARS (Sustainable Travel Accreditation Scheme) is funded by the Department for Transport's Hampshire Sustainable Transport Towns Fund (HSTT).

The objectives of the Government's fund are to reduce congestion at peak times and to reduce carbon and greenhouse gas emissions. These objectives will be met at a local level, through 'My Journey' initiatives to encourage less use of the private car and a more active lifestyle by encouraging walking, cycling, use of public transport or car sharing to travel around, particularly for

local journeys.

Hampshire County Council’s ‘Park and Stride’ initiative supported by the My Journey project aims to help schools to identify suitable sites for parents to park so that even if they have to drive their children to school, they can at least walk 5 to 10 minutes to school. This helps to keep traffic away from the school gate, making it safer for everyone and so enabling more active ways of travelling, including cycling. REG’S SEPTEMBER GARDENING TIPS EARLY IN THE MONTH This is a good time to move established evergreen shrubs, and the traditional time to start planting new trees and shrubs of all kinds.

As the summer bedding plants begin to fade replace them with cheerful autumn bedding varieties to brighten up the dull winter days ahead. We have a superb selection available in our planteria.

Make-up winter hanging baskets using pansies, bright evergreens and winter flowering heathers.

Prepared hyacinths should be planted and put in a cool, dark place by the end of this month if you want them in bloom by Christmas.

Watch out for aphid attacks on winter flowering pansies. The colonies live deep among the central rosette of leaves, causing the plants to wilt.

MID – MONTH. • Sow some hardy annuals outdoors in flowering positions in sheltered spots.

LATER IN THE MONTH • Lift beetroot, carrots, turnips and potatoes for winter use. Leave parsnips and swedes in the ground to develop more flavour.

• Bring in any tender shrubby plants taken outside for summer displays e.g. Brugmansia.

• Cut back marginal plants and net your pond to keep out autumn leaves.

• Bring in tender floating pond plants, like water chestnut and water hyacinth before frost.

• Dry some herb foliage for winter use, or chop and freeze them in ice cubes.

• Prune summer fruiting raspberries by removing old, fruited canes.

• Take cuttings from roses, preferably using shoots that have flowered. Trim them to

• Increase ventilation for indoor grapes to reduce fungal attack.

• Treat sheds, fences etc. with a good wood preserver.

• Bring in any house-plants that have been outside “on holiday” for the summer.

Most gardeners have a go at growing tomatoes and as the season comes to an end there are always lots of green fruit left on the plants. So what do you do with them, after all there is only so much green tomato chutney that you can possibly consume over the next twelve

months?

Well you certainly don’t put them in a sunny windowsill as that dries them out rather than ripening them. It is much better to put the green fruit in brown paper bags and place them in a drawer to gradually ripen up, but this can take time.

In order to accelerate the ripening process, place about 4 fruits in a paper, or polythene, bag and get a nice ripe banana.

You can eat the banana – it’s the skin that you want.

All you do is pop the skin in the bag with the tomatoes and leave them alone for a few days. The ethylene gas produced by the banana skin will soon turn the tomatoes on – making them ripen up and become an appetising red colour.

Swimmers bus to training camp A generous donation from the Emsworth and District Coach Hire company allowed 34 swimmers from the Havant and Waterlooville Swim Club to travel together in comfort to their crucial Crystal Palace Training Camp in April.

Thanks to a deal set up by Emsworth and District and PO9 & PO11 the transport was provided on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th April to take the young swimmers aged between 9 and 17 to the prestigious Crystal Palace long course training facility.

The training camp is a critical part of the youngsters training regime. It conditions them for marked calendar events, such as National Championships. It also works as part of their long term development training for other long distance events.

The swimmers completed more than 10k each day in the long course pool. When they were not swimming they were exercising with hundreds of sit ups and press-ups in the gym. The idea is to promote fast swimming and for some,

An undefeated pre-season so far and some crucial new signings have provided great optimism for the Hawks in the forthcoming new season. Some impressive signings especially upfront have bolstered an already impressive squad, including two strikers from the football league - Marvin Morgan (Plymouth Argyle) and James Hayter (Yeovil), as well as Matt Paterson who scored 26 times for Gosport last season. Thirty six year old Hayter played for Bournemouth, Doncaster Rovers and Yeovil respectively and in May 2007, Doncaster paid a club record transfer fee of £200,000 to sign him. Also from Gosport the Hawks have strengthened their defensive options with the capture of centre back Lee Molyneaux. Like Paterson, Molyneaux was a key part of their battle with Havant for a place in last seasons play offs. Josh Huggins, Perry Ryan and Ben Wright have all departed the club over the summer to make way for the new signings.

On the pitch a varying level of opposition has allowed Lee Bradbury to mix things up with his players old and new, as well as build up match fitness. So far in six friendlies new signings Adrian Clifton and Matt Paterson as well as last seasons top scorer Scott Donnelly have hit 3 goals a piece. James Hayter has also made a goalscoring start with 2 goals and youth product Jack Gayle has also found the net.

Away from home Hawks came through the first two friendlies comfortably winning 2-1 against Horndean and 2-0 versus Swindon Supermarine, the third was a high scoring 3-3 draw with Portchester.

The two home friendlies against higher level opponents Portsmouth and Eastleigh also saw positive results. This leaves the Hawks with games against Ryman Premier League Bognor Regis (29/07) and Conference National Dover Athletic (01/08) before starting their Vanarama National League South campaign away against Bishops Stortford.

hopefully, winning medals at several coming events. It also gives swimmers the opportunity to train in different waters, and in a long course pool, to see where they are on key qualifying and medalling times.

Crystal Palace has always provided support for the training camps which are second to none. The Club constantly relies on donations of time, facilities and funding from local businesses. This is not the first time Emsworth and District has donated the use of a bus to the Swim Club. The swimmers and parents are extremely grateful. Without these donated transport facilities, the cost of travel would have needed to be covered from the Club’s limited funds, or by parents.

Tim Randall’s Sports Round-up Tennis Warblington’s Avenue Lawn Tennis Squash and Fitness Club, is having a busy summer. It held a prestigious Grade 4 ITF Seniors Tennis tournament in June and the Aegon Summer County Cup Week in July.

Veteran tennis players from home and abroad competed in the Seniors tournament, sponsored by KKM Deliveries of Portsmouth. The veterans exulted the excellent grass courts and the warm welcome and hospitality of the Club members and staff. The Avenue Club’s Ian and Pauline Udal won in the Over-45 mixed doubles, beating tournament organiser Neil Crawford and Heather Halliday in straight sets. Ian Udal completed a hat-trick of wins, taking the Over-45 men’s doubles title with Martin Wilkinson from Warsash and beating the Avenue’s Richard Steeds in the Over 45 singles final. Also in the Over-45 section, the Ladies doubles final featured Club coach Tracy Manvell and former Avenue member and Hampshire county captain Sue Espley. They lost a superb match to Linda Jones and Anita Pearce from Ventnor, Isle of Wight. The full results are available on:

World series event, as qualification began for right to face holders America in the 35th America’s Cup. Racing off Southsea sea front had been scheduled for Saturday and Sunday 25 & 26 July. However, high winds put a stop to racing on the Sunday.

The Land Rover BAR team, led by Sir Ben Ainslie, had a first and second place in the two spectacular races held on the Saturday in front of a crowd of over 70,000. In the event they were declared the winners of the first Americas Cup World Series qualifiers event. The Series moves on to Sweden for the next stage in the 2015 Louis Vetton series. The event will return to Portsmouth in 2016 and hopefully will enjoy better weather.

The visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge brightened up an otherwise disappointing final day of the Regatta. The Royal couple joined the Land Rover BAR team’s champagne celebrations to mark their victory.

The week 20 – 24 July saw the Avenue Club host the second division games of the Aegon Summer County Cup. County week is a UK wide doubles tennis competition for men aged 18 – 30. They compete for their Counties in several divisions at various venues. Two Counties are promoted and two relegated from each Division. Division Two matches are played annually at the Avenue Club. Being the second division, the standard of tennis is high. The week was rain affected and despite tinkering with the format as the week progressed, the tournament ended early when torrential rain prevented any play on the final day. Essex were promoted on winning Division 2, while at the other end Cambridgeshire took the wooden spoon and relegation to Division 3.

Dawn is a special time of day, and a bike ride at dawn is a special sort of adventure. Every year, around the longest day, Portsmouth and Havant CTC set out from the Spring Centre at 5am on the Bob Kemp Memorial Ride. The ride commemorates Bob Kemp, a former member of the club. Bob loved early morning cycling on quiet roads with a chorus of birdsong. The BKM offers riders the opportunity to do 100 miles in a day, and still be home in time for tea.

This year's ride on 13 June took us to Salisbury. Our second breakfast at 9:30 was in the Kings Head Inn beside the River Avon. A delightful riverside bike path led us to the ancient hill fort and former rotten borough of Old Sarum. We turned East along quiet lanes to lunch at Stockbridge beside the River Test. The river led us South, then East through Kings Somborne and the Farley Mount Country Park to Winchester. A tea stop was taken at the Ship Inn in Owslebury. Returning to Havant involved typical Hampshire ridge riding along Wheely Down and Old Winchester Hill. Riding in a group is a good social event. It provides practical and moral support with any mechanical problems; which was some comfort to one rider unlucky enough to have three punctures during the day! On a fine day in

lovely countryside the repairs provided opportunities for a chat and impromptu picnic, and nobody was left behind. At 113 miles the ride was a full value century and a great day out.

There are so many different types of bicycles these days, so I asked Havant CTC’s Mike Skiffins about the kind of bicycles potential new members would need to join the Club’s rides. Mike said ‘There is no such thing as a ‘proper’ bike that you need to take part in our rides. All we expect is that it should be legal and roadworthy for your own safety and the safety of those riding with you. We see a variety of cycles on our rides: bikes with dropped handlebars; bikes with straight bars; ‘hybrid’ bikes; bikes with suspension; tandems; tricycles; tandem trikes; recumbents; folding bikes; bikes with electric motors. So you see, nobody is excluded because their bike doesn’t fit in.’

Parkrun uk organises free, weekly, 5km timed runs around the world. Park runs are free, open to everyone and are safe and easy to take part in.

These events take place in pleasant parkland surroundings and encourage people of every ability to take part; from those taking their first steps in running to Olympians; from juniors to those with more years or experience; all are welcome Parkrun aims to have an event in every community that wants one, wherever they are. There is already a Havant parkrun. It takes place weekly and it is free. Havant parkrun is a 5km run - it's you against the clock. When is it? It is every Saturday at 9:00am. Where is it? I spoke to Richard Acton who has been an active parkrunner with the Havant parkrun group for more than two years. I asked Richard how he felt about Parkrun.

Here is what he said: “Parkrun is addictive. Once you’ve been and given it a try you definitely cannot wait until the next one. It’s a great way to keep fit. You make new friends and it really does not matter if you are fast or slow. I have done nearly 120 runs since the start of 2013, mostly at Havant. But now I also run at Southsea, Chichester and occasionally Bognor. I love the fact that it is so easy and you get a record of the time of all your runs, wherever they take place”’

I asked Richard about the volunteering side. He said: “Volunteering is very important to parkrun. As a volunteer, it also gives you a great buzz. Encouraging people as they run past, you find most are really appreciative of the support. I think Parkrun gives you a positive start to the weekend, even if you don’t beat your PB (personal best)!”

When you first register you are given a personal barcode. You must then remember to take a copy of your barcode with you whenever you do a parkrun. To ensure you do not forget to take it you can even request a reminder! Should you forget it, you won't get a time! The barcode is used to record for you, each of your run times.

People thinking of joining in often ask “How fast do I have to be?” The answer is that the runs are for your own enjoyment and your personal goals. You can just go along and join in - whatever your pace! Beyond writing on sports, I specialise in this area of elite sport having studied it at Brighton University. It is a relatively new branch of sports science but sadly is largely ignored in the UK. Elsewhere however the science is successfully applied in many sports. On the back of the success of the England Women's team in the recent Women’s World Cup in Canada, Hayling St. Andrew's FC has been quick to draw attention to its brand new Girl's football coaching sessions. The girl’s sessions started a few weeks ago. They are held in Mengham Park, Selsmore Lane, Hayling Island. The girls train on Thursdays from 6 7:30pm (during the summer) and on Saturdays throughout the year from 9:30 11.00am.

With the launch of the the girls sessions, they are currently being coached

by Portsmouth FC Ladies U13 UEFA B licenced coach Ben Johnson. At this early stage the girls are having fun and enjoying the chance to develop football skills.

Already the Club has 15 boys and girls aged 5 - 7 in its existing junior division which is linked to an AAA Coaching's Soccer Tots program for children aged 2-4 years.

The Club’s currently provides the following football coaching sessions all year round at the times and venues indicated: • U5-U10s, plus all girls , the boys and girls in the Junior division for children aged 5-7 and the AAA Coaching's Soccer Tots program for children aged 2-4, train at Mengham Park 9:30-11.00 am on Saturday mornings

• U11-U13s train at Hayling Park 9:3011am on Saturday mornings With the Club’s commitment to this extensive football coaching programme it is no surprise that the Club has gained the FA Chartered Standard. This FA award means that all Hayling St Andrews FC coaches are DBS checked and qualified to at least FA Coaching Level 1. Many of the Club’s coaches however, have already attained higher level coaching awards.

On the playing side, the Club runs a number of teams. In the 2015/16 season, it is entering eleven boys teams from U8’s to U13’s in the Portsmouth Youth Football League. Following the introduction of the new girl's training sessions, the Club also aims to enter a Hayling St Andrews FC girls team in the girl’s league in the 2016/17 season. The girls coach, Ben Johnson, is in discussions with the Pompey Ladies FC about Hayling St Andrews FC becoming a feeder club for them. In the future this would mean talented girls from the island could join up with the best girl’s footballers in the local area.

CRAFT BEERS – Enjoy your local brews

India Pale Ale (IPA) – the Beer of the Empire floral aroma and a yeasty, hoppy taste. Also available on draught.

Back in the nineteenth century beer was exported to India for consumption by British troops. Prior to refrigeration it was not possible to brew beers in hot countries so barrels of strong heavily hopped beers brewed in Burton on Trent were exported to India. The extra alcohol and hops helped preserve these beers during the lengthy sea voyage to the Indian Empire. The term IPA came to denote a stronger, hoppier bitter beer.

With the revival of craft brewing in Britain from the 1970’s onward more breweries became interested in restoring this style of beer. At the same time in America small craft breweries began producing extreme versions of IPA which were very high in alcohol and very heavily hopped. If you like bitter but perhaps hanker for something a little stronger and more flavoursome than the lower alcohol session beers then IPA could be the drink for you. I have been around our local supermarkets and have rounded up a few IPAs which you may wish to try at home (or in your local pub). Expect to pay from £2 - £2.50 for a 500 ml bottle.

Thornbridge Jaipur IPA 5.9% 500 ml. Brewed in Bakewell, Derbyshire This is an unpasteurised and unfiltered beer brewed by the innovative Thornbridge Brewery who opened in 2005 and now brew over 20 different types of beer. It has a distinctly citrus taste and is very hoppy. A refreshing beer which is long on the palate.

Marston’s Old Empire IPA 5.7% Brewed in Burton on Trent Marston’s are one of Britain’s biggest independent breweries having acquired many local brewers in recent years. This is a more conventional tasting bitter which is not so heavily hopped. A very fine spicy, floral balanced taste.

St Peter’s Indian Pale Ale 5.5% 500 ml Brewed in Bungay, Suffolk This brewery, founded in 1996 now exports almost half of its production. Its distinctive flask shaped bottles help it stand out on the supermarket shelves. It has a well rounded

Fullers Bengal Lancer. 5.3% 500ml Brewed in London Fullers took over the much loved Horndean Breweries in 2005. This is a bottle conditioned, pale, golden tinged ale with a

taste and is not as heavily hopped as some IPAs. Shepherd Neame India Pale Ale (6.1%) 500 ml Brewed in Faversham, Kent This brewery goes back to the seventeeth century. This is maltier in taste than many IPAs and has a full flavour. I felt this was more like an Old/Strong ale in taste.

Goose Island IPA. (5.9%) 355 ml Brewed in Chicago, USA This American take on the traditional British IPA is one of the beers that started

the craft beer revolution in the USA. It is made with 4 different types of hops and has a very citrusy, bitter taste, much more so than most British IPA’s.

Oakleaf Brewery, IPA. (5.5%) 500 ml Brewed in Gosport This cloudy, golden beer has a dry, bitter marmalade, citrus and aniseed taste. It is a bottle conditioned beer which is very bitter in the American heavily hopped style.

Brewdog Punk IPA (5.6%) 330 ml Brewed in Ellon, Scotland This innovative Scottish brewery was founded in 2007 and has shaken up the brewing establishment with its challenging, extreme beers. This drink is light golden in colour with a powerful grapefruit aroma. It really is heavily hopped and has an overwhelming citrus/tropical fruit taste. This is a beer you either love or hate. No half measures with Brewdog beers.

Many breweries offer an IPA so do try this style next time you go out for a drink or select a few bottles of IPA when you are in the supermarket or off licence.

If you are looking for a good read then I can recommend “Hops and Glory” by Pete Brown. Pan Books 2009 £7.99. This is part history book and part travelogue. The author discovers the history of IPA and attempts to travel to India accompanied by a barrel of IPA beer. It is an amusing and informative book which any beer lover would enjoy.

What are UV rays?

Ultraviolet radiation is a form of energy that comes from the sun. It is composed of various wavelengths of light that penetrate the Ozone layer and Earth’s surface. Exposure to some forms of UV radiation (UVA/UVB) has been reported to be a major risk factor in cases of skin cancers. Long term exposure can harm the skins DNA and damage collagen fibers advancing the signs of aging. Premature wrinkling is common in those who have been exposed to the sun over long periods of time, as are age spots and uneven complexions. UV radiation can cause cataracts and weaken the immune system.

Who’s at risk?

Everyone. People with fairer skins are more likely to suffer damage from sun exposure but even people with darker skins need to take measures to protect themselves. Skins that have been burnt before, even in childhood, will be particularly sensitive to exposure.

Protecting ourselves

• Sunscreen When purchasing a sunscreen product you should think of it as an investment. The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a measure of a sunscreen's ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin. How it works: If it takes 20 minutes for your unprotected skin to start turning red, using an SPF 15 product should prevent reddening 15 times longer (about five hours). The higher the SPF, the higher percentage of protection against UVB rays.

Sunscreen works best once absorbed so apply it around 20 minutes before heading outdoors and reapply regularly (every two hours) especially when swimming or perspiring.

Tip – Remember to protect your lips by applying a lip balm with an SPF of 15 or higher.

• Cover up Hats can protect the scalp, ears and hairline and shade the eyes from sunlight. Tightly-woven clothing helps deflect UV rays better than thin cotton.

• Sunglasses Plastic lenses that offer 100% UV protection are the best choice. Forget worrying about ‘panda eyes’ and remember you’re preventing the risk of cataracts in later life. Sunglasses also protect the delicate skin around the eyes from premature wrinkling.

• Avoid midday sun The sun’s rays are strongest between around 10.30am and 3.30pm so avoid being exposed during this time. If you are outdoors cover up, apply sunscreen and try and stay in the shade where possible.

Glow Safe If you have a fair complexion your skin contains fewer pigment producing cells which means you’re unlikely to achieve a tan. Why traumatise your skin trying when there are so many healthier options available?

Remember that you can achieve a ‘Faux Glow’ without any damage to your skin!

Apply a gradual tan moisturiser each evening and not only will you be glowing but you will have avoided the painful effects of the sun - including soreness, luminescent red skin and the dreaded peeling.

There has been a lot of research on the link between sunlight and our moods.

Sunlight can improve sleep quality.

When sunlight hits your eyes, your optic nerve sends a message to the gland in the brain that produces melatonin (a hormone that helps you sleep); the gland decreases its secretions of melatonin until the sun goes down again. In other words, exposure to sunlight during the day increases the natural production of melatonin at night. Low levels of melatonin production are linked to poor sleep quality, especially in older adults.

Cade roofing was formed in 1991, starting off as a family business, it has grown into one of the largest roofing companies in the south of England.

Cade roofing specialises in the social housing sector and has been built to manage our clients needs in every way through our bespoke IT system. Cade roofing carries out all aspects of roofing, carrying out repairs from 1 tile to major planned maintenance projects.

Cade Scaffolding are highly driven on complying with the regulations of Health and Safety and TG20:13 on all their work which is led by part II scaffolders and subsequently inspected by our Scaffold Supervisor. Our operatives are supplied with Cade Scaffolding uniform as well as the relevant PPE and harnesses.
