EMSWORTH’S PERFECT SETTING FOR BIRDLIFE & ARTISTS CHICHESTER HARBOUR CONSERVANCY PROJECT
HELP COUNT THE BRENT GEESE
A new way of reporting local bird sightings online This new facility is primarily to help record the numbers and movements of Brent Geese, a popular winter visitor to the harbour area. Last winter, over 10,000 Dark-bellied Brent Geese visited Chichester Harbour, making the area internationally important for this species with about 5% of the population. The Geese are easily identified by their ‘cronking’ sound as they fly overhead in loose flocks unlike the V formations of Canada Geese, or they form groups plodding over the mudflats on their sturdy webbed feet. In the daytime the Geese will move inland, sometimes several kilometres and can be seen grazing on farmland and playing fields. It is this use of inland fields, the linkage between the harbour and the wider countryside that we are particularly interested in. Keeping track of their movements within the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a challenge, so Conservation Officer, Ed Rowsell is calling on the public for extra help. Goosewatch has been in operation for a few years with a small group of dedicated volunteers,
Brent Goose by Peter Arnold but it is hoped that the online system will open it up to a wider audience. Ed says, ‘we have set up a very simple online reporting system. From our website www.conservancy.co.uk follow the links to Goosewatch and after a simple registration you can input the number of geese seen and then click on a map to show the location.’ The results are then shown on a map showing all the data collected so far. The system also allows the recording of a range of other bird species that also use inland fields, such as Curlew and Lapwing.
