THE PRINCESS ROYAL IN HAVANT Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal visited the Public Service Plaza, Havant to unveil a plaque to mark the official opening, during Havant Borough Council’s Community Open Day event. The Open Day gave residents an opportunity to look around the Plaza and the numerous stands from voluntary organisations, public services, partner organisations and local business entrepreneurs. Havant’s Public Service Plaza represents a new way of partnership working to deliver public service excellence. The refurbishment of the building, completed a year ago, is now occupied by Havant Borough Council staff and partners, Hampshire County Council Children’s and Adult Services and the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB). The scheme is recognised by Government as a model for two-tier working across county and borough councils. The development of public service hubs supported by new technology and flexible working practices enables councils to deliver savings and more joinedup public services under one roof. As well as lowering energy use and carbon footprint, it releases now surplus public buildings for sale. It offers joined up public services accessed through one central point. The Plaza is Shortlisted for Design and Innovation in the 2013 RICS South East Award.

STREET PIANO ARRIVES PLAY ME: I’M YOURS! Wow! So many offers of pianos were received it was difficult for us to decide which was the best one to use. Rob Fryer - manager of the Meridian Centre, said that he preferred a baby grand. No sooner had the piano arrived into the Meridian Centre, than up came Verity Meckliffe asking to be the

first to play it. This made for a pleasent interlude in a hot afternoon, to take an iced coffee in Boswells and listen to the music played by Verity. We had no time to badge the piano then, which MG Imaging of 51b South Street, Havant have now done. The piano now looks very different as can be seen in this latest photo with Sarah Cargill playing. RNLI Rowers battle the winds By: Alan Bartlett,Volunteer Lifeboat Press Officer Echoing the past when the Hayling Island RNLI Lifeboat was a ten oared rowing boat, six novice crew took part in a gig race on Saturday 22 June battling into a Force 6/7, gusting 8 SW wind, with sponsorship going to the RNLI. A Hayling Island RNLI Lifeboat crew member, also a member of the Langstone Cutters Rowing and Gig Clubs, persuaded 5 other RNLI crew members to train and enter a 6 oared gig in the race around Hayling Island, organised by Langstone Adventure Rowing. None of 5 RNLI crew members had ever rowed before, and found the modified pilot gig a rather heavy vessel, with even heavier oars! The rowing recruits consisted of, Peter Walmsley, Jo Penney, Mark Spittles, Jeremy Baggett, Natalie Gillespie and Paul Nelhams, and coxed by a member of the LAR coaching

team, Chris Partridge. Mike Gilbert, who runs Langstone Adventure Rowing, kindly agreed to coach the crew, and loan the boat ‘Deborah’ for training, free of charge in support of the RNLI. It’s the same boat that John Bishop used to row across the channel, and the same said coaching team so the crew were in good hands. They had 5 training sessions, of approximately 2 hours each, producing aching muscles and blisters for all their efforts. Fitting in training and concentrating on timing and technique was a lot to cover in a short space of time. Eventually the day dawned with heavy rain and a severe SW wind and the organisers were forced to change the course from ‘Round Hayling Island’ to a 9 mile race in the relative shelter of Chichester Harbour, from Northney

Marina to the Fishery Buoy off Hayling Island Sailing Club and back to Northney. Six intrepid crews entered and the RNLI team came home a creditable 4th! Everyone was very impressed to learn they had only just started rowing, especially the visiting Gig Clubs. A formidable achievement of team effort and endurance especially in that wind! The crew have set a fundraising goal of

£500 and are already nearly half-way there with £230 raised. To add to their total go to the Just Giving website using the link www.justgiving.com/RNLI-Round-HaylingRace and share in their success. They are determined to complete the ‘Round Hayling Island’ course, which they hope to do later in the summer, hopefully in better weather so there is still time to get your sponsorship in.

A SMALL MARKET WITH A BIG HEART This small indoor produce market was only set up in June but has already become a popular destination for local shoppers in Emsworth and visitors. Stallholders sell a variety of products, ranging from freshly roasted coffee beans to organic fruit and vegetables, from fudge to skincare, and from seasonal preserves to fiery chilli jam. Locally grown plants are also available. The stallholders have already taken a local charity to their hearts. The Rosemary Foundation is a Petersfield based charity

offering hospice at home care. Market manager Phoebe Atkinson had always planned to have a collection box in the market where people could make donations if they wanted to. “The Rosemary Foundation offered so much help to a neighbour and his wife during the final weeks of his life, and I was keen to find a way to support their work” said Phoebe. What surprised her was how enthusiastic all the stallholders have been about supporting The Rosemary Foundation. “In July we made space for a

Rosemary Foundation stall and sold rosemary shortbread. This month we are having a small fundraiser with prizes provided by Gij Design and Home and Mill Pond Cakes.” The market takes place in the Emsworth Centre, South Street, on the 2nd Saturday of the month. “We are a pretty friendly bunch, so I’m sure we will be putting our heads together to find other ways to support the Rosemary Foundation at future markets,” said Phoebe Atkinson, market manager. Havant Volunteer Awards Ceremony 2013 Community First and the Mayor Celebrate Volunteering Volunteers across Havant Borough were recognised for their volunteering contribution to the local community at The Public Service Plaza where volunteers were presented with Certificates from The Mayor of Havant, Cllr Paul Buckley. Volunteers were nominated by organisations from across the Havant area. Tim Houghton, from Community First HEH, who helped organise the event, said “the event was a great success with people being recognised from an amazing variety of areas such as community groups, children and young people, heritage, older people, churches, colleges, families, disability groups, environmental, first aid, search & rescue and the police. Feedback from the day has been really positive with volunteers saying “We are particularly grateful for the kindness of everyone who looked after us so spectacularly, we were made to feel really special and welcome”. Ancient and Modern Charities Find Common Ground By: Jim Davis

Stone’s Allotment Trust is certainly the ancient one. It was set up in 1876 by William Stone M.P. to provide allotments for “cottagers and like persons resident in the parish of Havant.” That dated description of the potential beneficiaries we now translate as anyone living in the Havant area who would like an allotment! And there’s a waiting list, so the need is still there; and the five and a bit acres that Mr Stone kindly carved out of his rolling parklands still helps to meet it. A very different need was recognised by Anita Usai and Kerry Whapshott when, in 2012, they set up Chaos Support, a charity dedicated to improving the lives of young adults with learning difficulties and related special needs. We all need a sense of achievement in life, whatever our abilities. So Chaos Support aims to develop a series of achievable goals which are appropriate for each individual and then to provide guidance and encouragement for what can be a very challenging journey. This very youthful charity is based in Stonecroft House in

Leigh Road, only a short distance from the old Stone’s Allotments in New Lane. But now there is more than mere geographical proximity that links these two charities, for Chaos Support has decided to develop a small section of the allotment site to meet the requirements of their own beneficiaries, with the creation of raised beds and with broad paved paths between, suitable for wheel-chair users. So now this new charity will be able to share in the benefit conferred on Havant all those years ago, and join the other plotholders in the pleasures - and occasional pains of - gardening. In a world so dominated by market forces and the bottom line, there is something very special and valuable when two charities, the ancient and the modern, come together in this way. Making money is not, after all, the point. The point and purpose of both charities is to enhance the quality of life for their beneficiaries; and in that, certainly, there is common ground.

Langstone Harbour is the small area lying between the busy commercial Portsmouth Harbour and the extensive Chichester Harbour busy with recreational sailing. It is looked after by the Langstone Harbour Board and its islands are protected for the birds by the RSPB; it is an SSSI (a site of special scientific interest). Its western side includes the creek up to the railway bridge. The Friends of Langstone Harbour was formed 16 years ago to bring together people interested in the preservation of the harbour for everyone be they bird watchers, fishermen, walkers, sailors etc. In

those years we have made, mended and cleared paths, helped with the preservation of the oyster beds and collected lots of litter. We hold our AGM in October and a small group meet once a month, usually on the last Saturday, for a working morning. Our Committee look at Planning and Conservation issues concerning the harbour and its surroundings. We would like to recruit more members, especially younger ones, who are enthusiastic about preserving our beautiful harbour and could take an active part. Post Legal Aid cuts

Where are we 3 months on? The Legal Aid cuts had a deep impact on many residents of PO9 & PO11. Many people who were previously eligible for legal aid were suddenly unable to obtain legal advice for family law matters as of 1 April 2013. Cricket – made in Hambledon! By: Ben Sharkey, Havant College

It is incredible to think that cricket, the world’s second most popular sport and the most popular in 20 countries with a combined population of 1.6 billion…was made into the sport it is today in and around the small village of Hambledon, 15 miles north of Portsmouth. The origins of cricket are widely disputed but most people agree that Hambledon is where it began. The cricket club in Hambledon was founded around 1750 and was renowned for boasting the most talented side in England, a wellknown victory being in June 1777 when Hambledon took on England and beat them by a whole innings - England getting 166 runs and 69 to Hambledon's 403. Their matches drew thousands of spectators from around the country and the popularity of the game is still rising, the ICC cricket World Cup is the third largest single sporting event in the world, only being surpassed in television viewers by the Football World Cup and the Olympics. The club was the governing body of the game and helped promote the sport and aided its growth.

The clubs ground was Broadhalfpenny down and this is where they had most of their success, however they moved to Windmill Down in 1782 and later into Ridge Meadow which is the current home of the club and where a pavilion was built in 1969, funded by cricket lovers worldwide. The club is no longer a powerful as it once was, due to the formation of the Marylebone Cricket Club in London in 1787. This triggered a move in power over the administration of the game, and now the home of cricket is seen as Lords which is MCC’s ground. Hambledon village is commonly referred to as the ‘cradle of cricket’ as the sport was created long before the creation of the club but was turned into the sport it is by rule changes etc. that were made by the club. Although Broadhalfpenny down is no longer used by the club, it is now used by the Broadhalfpenny Brigands Cricket Club and there is a memorial stone situated on the ground near the Bat & Ball Inn which was once described by David Gower as ‘the centre of the cricketing universe’.

The Technology Park was identified as a key hub for the BEST Network, due to its extensive history in leading technological advancement. Langstone is also a wellestablished hub for business in Hampshire, with around 4,000 employees from 40 businesses based there. The BEST Network – The Business Environments for Science and Technology Network – was designed to create cross network clusters for the UK in some of the UK’s highest growth sectors and with support in mind to businesses that wish to

Northney Ice Cream celebrates success as orders increase four-fold The summer has well and truly arrived for Northney Ice Cream, as they celebrate an increase in sales that is four times that of last year, thanks to some recent sign ups from well-known local businesses and the recent warm weather.

Northney Ice Cream was set up in 2009 by Tim Pike as a diversification project. It is made from the milk of his herd of pedigree Ayrshire cows and turned into ice cream on site at Northney Farm on Hayling Island. tasty and just right for the wine we had ordered. In the meantime the restaurant had started to fill. Our main course arrived after a little time I had chosen slow cooked lamb shank on a bed of freshly prepared potato mash and peas; my partner had strayed onto the specials menu and had selected cod loin and plump black pearl scallop in a creamy dill sauce set again onto a bed of mashed potato. The desserts menu gave a lot of choice as well – a variety of ice-creams together with a cheese board (Stilton Cheddar and Wensleydale) were our choices. An excellent wine list and a good range of beers are available. It was pleasing to see this 42 bedroomed hotel busy and it is so easy to visit this establishment as it boasts a large car park to the rear. Why not give this hotel a try and hopefully enjoy the visit as much as we did – treading in the footsteps of Queen Victoria, Churchill and Eisenhower!

Yes, it is really true, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and just look at these fantastic girls from Spirit-of-the-South, an A Capella Chorus with members from all-over Hampshire, rehearsing at Park Community School, Middle Park Way, Havant. Even though it was hot, Sylvia Howard and Jackie Stanley did the first 10km at a fast pace in 1 hour 48 minutes. They were then joined by Lucy van de Ven, Louise Kenneison, Molly Butler, Gillian Rose-Smith and Jan Dunleavy for 5km which they

finished in 67 minutes. They still had some breath left to sing some old time songs like pack up your troubles, as they walked before making a dash at the last 40 yards arm in arm. The Bear Hotel in East Street Havant has played host to Queen Victoria, Churchill and Eisenhower and one balmy summer’s evening it hosted our visit to this traditional coaching inn. In this issue I have included “core stability” exercises to assist with the maintenance of good posture, help support your back and provide the base for all arm and leg movements. A lot of people have weak core muscles including those with desk based jobs and some people who lift heavy weights at gyms. Strong core muscles are extremely important for stability and help to reduce the risk of back injury. More often than not, though, they aren’t targeted when people are working out. Please be aware of your body and take

Bridge The bridge is good for strengthening the core stability and gluteal muscles (buttocks). Lie on the floor with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Squeeze your gluteals and then push your hips up until there is a straight line through knee and hip to upper body and shoulders remain on the floor. Hold ten seconds, repeat ten times, three times a day.

Superman This exercise helps strengthen core stability muscles and improves balance. Kneel on the floor and place your hands below your shoulders and knees below your hips. Extend right leg back and the left arm forward. Maintain a straight body line through extended leg, body and extended arm. Repeat with opposite limbs. Hold 10 seconds, repeat 10 times, 3 times a day.

I advised her to start but cutting down on her milk drinks and suggested she opt for herbal tea, especially peppermint and fennel instead. Choosing high fibre foods such as wholemeal bread, pulses and whole grain cereals would alleviate the symptoms. Over a two week period Lesley altered her diet and the next time I saw her said ‘it was like someone flicked a switch inside me. Dr Loosen 2012 Riesling I can honestly say that if it hadn’t been for German Riesling white wines and Dr Loosen Riesling white wine, in particular, I would never ever have developed all the love and passion I have for wine, today. Because for me, personally, German Rieslings are just some of the most wonderful wines in the world! Yet, strangely, one of the most underrated and underappreciated? And that’s not just me saying that! But then, if a customer in the restaurant asks me: “What do you recommend?” And I reply: “We have a really lovely German Riesling, if you would like to try it?” More often than not, I get the same answer: “Oh I don’t think so, thank you. Maybe a Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio, perhaps, if you have one…?” Not that I can appear to be in any way biased, of course. But then, that’s not to say I am going to give up easily, especially if I get a hint that they’re willing to be a little adventurous, which is great! And, I have to say, so far, I’ve always been proved right. And, as a result, have ended up with some very happy, if not pleasantly surprised, customers, at that! Even so, I cannot for the life of me understand why people seem so reluctant to go with German Rieslings? Granted, some customers are quite anti, what they consider to be very sweet wines. And then there are those who still remember Riesling as possibly being that cheap, old-fashioned not so nice German plonk they had in their youth…. Well, all I can say is; that things have moved on ‘big time’ since those days! Because Rieslings, today, I can tell you, exhibit a range of styles and dynamic flavours unmatched by any other wine, arguably anyway; ranging as they do from dry, through to light and mediumsweet, to wines that are truly stunningly luscious in their nectar-like sweetness yet outstandingly refreshing, tangy fruity flavours. And never mind, dare I add, that this luxuriously sweet wine is the result of picking what are called ‘late harvest grapes’

that have become infected with, of all things, a disgusting looking fungus called Noble Rot which shrivels-up the grapes. But in doing so, leaves behind the most heavenly, sweet and exquisite, concentrated juice, which is then used to make the wine…. So next time you go to throw out a bowl of half-eaten rotting grapes, think again perhaps!! Which brings me nicely to this, my fourth wine of the month: Dr Loosen 2012 Riesling, as pictured; Asda price, at the time of printing: £5.78 per bottle. Because, Dr Loosen is one of Germany’s finest producers of Riesling wines; and where Riesling white grapes have been growing on the steep, slate-soil vineyards of the Mosel river valley, as elsewhere in Germany, ever since they were first brought to the world’s attention back in the 15th Century…. For just tasting this extraordinary wine brings back so many memories. Its honey-silkiness, if you have ever tried honey over pancakes or honey with ice-cream; it’s so scrumptious and tasty. And coupled with the fruity flavours of green apple and grape; not to mention the luscious pear, peach and apple aromas which permeate this delectable wine, no wonder it’s also so totally refreshing! Fabulous! Gorgeous! ….And, as far as pairing it with food is concerned, the great advantage, as with all Rieslings, is that it will go with almost anything. But, in particular, I would mention perhaps: seafood dishes like lobster and scallops; salad with sundried tomatoes, something with a bit if a kick to it; and certainly anything spicy such as Chinese, Indian or Thai. Not forgetting, of course, as an accompaniment to desserts, such as: strawberries, tropical fruit, summer pudding and fruit pies…. But, whatever you decide, please just go-out and give this ‘bad boy’, this ‘little number’, a try? Because if you don’t, you won’t know what you’re missing! So, finally, what do I recommend to go with Kathy Fitchett’s sensational dish opposite: roasted pepper, caramelised onion and goat’s cheese tart? Why, Dr Loosen 2012 Riesling, of course…. Food Fiend Experience Recipe column - by Kathy Fitchett Preparation: Photography by the Rob Paul Studio, Havant

Roasted Vegetable and Goats cheese tart with caramelised onion, a delicious starter or main course. My recipe this month is to be enjoyed for ‘al fresco’ dining; however, I’ll be honest, I have actually cooked it many more times as a mid-week supper with a salad and roasted new potatoes. It is so easy to make and a real tasty number, you cannot fail to impress anyone you make it for. Ingredients: 1 pack ready rolled puff pastry; 4 large peppers mixture of colours preferable; 2 onions; 4 tbsp. sugar; Dash of white wine vinegar; 150 gms goats’ cheese; Basil leaves. Instructions: 1. Open out ready rolled puff pastry and cut into desired portion size and then bake in oven at 200 degrees for approx. 10 minutes until partially cooked through and then remove from oven. 2. Cut each pepper into 8 strips by firstly halving the pepper and then having the quarter and then halving the quarter. Place on a baking sheet and sprinkle with a little olive oil and then season with pepper and salt and bake in the oven for 30 to 40 minutes until well cooked. 3. Roughly dice the onions and then cook in a non-stick pan with some olive oil adding the sugar first and then the vinegar and cook over low heat for 10 to 15 minutes until onions start to turn brown. 4. Slice goats cheese. 5. Assemble tart, firstly spread a thin layer of caramelised onion on the partially cooked pastry, follow this with the cooked peppers and then the sliced goats cheese. Bake in the oven on 200 degrees for 15 minutes until well cooked. 6. Enjoy cooked tart with a salad and roasted new potatoes for a more substantial meal and the white wine recommended by Daniel Clark, Dr Loosen 2012 Riesling.

NEW SOCIETY TAKES OFF! By: Mrs Angela Waller Were you in the Royal Air Force? If so, you will be interested to hear about a recently formed Society that meets every month in Chichester, with some additional meetings. Arun & Chichester (Air) Enthusiasts Society, (also known as Air ACES), holds its regular meetings, on Monday evenings, at the Chichester Park Hotel (behind Sainsbury's, off of the Chichester by-pass), Westhampnett, Chichester. PO19 7QL. The group was formed less than a year ago, and interest has grown quickly - 51 persons attended the inaugural meeting and over 140 have attended recent talk evenings. The Society's membership (at present there are 126 members) is growing fast, with members coming from a wide area across West Sussex, North East to Surrey, West to Southampton & East to Brighton. Speakers are booked for each meeting and talks cover a wide range of aviationrelated topics, from vintage aircraft to Concorde. Recently, John Farley talked on "The Harrier Story", Richard (Dick) Kharegat talked about "A Life in Bombers, including the Vulcan", and as part of the

Festival of Chichester, Terence Henderson, former Senior Captain on Concorde, was the speaker at the Air ACES meeting in June. Another "outing" for members is planned with a visit to 'a special air day' at Brooklands, in September. The Society actively supports local community junior groups - at present, the Bognor Scout Cubs & Scouts. and the Bognor & Chichester Air Training Corps (ATC), as well as the Sussex Air Ambulance. Membership is £10 per year (and at present new members signing for 2014 membership, can get the rest of 2013 included - a big bonus - 17 months for the price of 12 months!).Visitors are very welcome and pay £5 entrance fee for each meeting, and may attend as often as they wish as "visitors", without becoming a member. Denmead Charity Cycle Ride This years event in the village of Denmead to raise funds for the ‘Hannah’s Holiday Home Appeal’ was for the first time held on a Saturday rather than a Sunday to facilitate an evenings entertainment The charity provides funded breaks for families with children with life threatening illnesses, undergoing or recovering from treatment, or coping with bereavement. A record 225 sponsored cyclists of all ages rode out from the Harvest Home pub in Denmead. They rode towards Clanfield, the Bat & Ball Public House, through Hambledon village towards Hoe Cross and Newtown, and back to Denmead via the Chairmakers Arms. Most did the 20 mile ride but the more energetic completed a 35 mile ride with loops through the spectacular scenery and countryside around Winchester Hill, Brockbridge, and Soberton. As well as raising money from the sponsored rides, back at Harvest Home the fund raising included a BBQ in the field opposite the pub, a raffle and tombola, an auction and two bands - Fay Wray and Sporting life. Waterlooville Probus Club In late June, Probus members and their guests went on a trip on the Spirit of Portsmouth from Gosport to the Beaulieu River and Bucklers Hard. Our return was along the north shore of the Isle of Wight, and after inspecting one of the Solent Forts at close quarters, we then toured the dockyard to see all the naval ships currently based in Portsmouth. Recovery From Divorce and Separation Relationship breakdown hurts. Many people find it hard to move on; they need time to rebuild self confidence and may be helped by meeting people in the same boat. “The course gives positive practical help about the situation you are in and makes you feel you are not the only one” says one of our previous members. ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTYFOR VALOUR WEEKEND PAYS TRIBUTE TO WW1 HEROES The centenary of World War One coming up next year has prompted the Holiday Inn Winchester to repeat the highly successful For Valour Weekend for the second year. Located on Morn Hill, one of the most historic and important WW1 sites in Hampshire, the hotel has forged strong links with the Winchester military museums. Morn Hill was considered the last stop before going into battle and in December 1914 50,000 troops lived under canvas there preparing to travel to France and Belgium via Southampton. Four years later over 2 million soldiers, including 800,000 Americans had passed through the camp. “We know that there is huge interest in the military, particularly with the WW1 anniversary coming up and we wanted to pay tribute to all the brave soldiers that left this site here at Morn Hill,” commented Holiday Inn Winchester General Manager Siobhan Thomasson. The weekend starts with a special evening talk at the hotel on Friday 11th October on ‘The Origins and History of the Victoria Cross’ by Lieutenant General Sir Christopher Wallace, author of ‘Focus and Courage: the 59 Victoria Crosses of the Royal Green Jackets.’ This is followed by dinner in the hotel’s Morn Hill Brasserie Restaurant. Congreve was one of the many brave soldiers who received a Victoria Cross, who was killed in December 1915, aged just 25 after many acts of great courage and bravery detailed in a transcript from the London Gazette relating to the awarding of the Victoria Cross ‘for most conspicuous bravery during a period of fourteen days preceding his death in action. This officer constantly performed acts of gallantry and showed the greatest devotion to duty, and by his personal example inspired all around him with confidence at critical periods of the operation. During preliminary preparations for the attack he carried out personal reconnaissance of the enemy lines, taking out parties of officers and noncommissioned officers for over 1000 yards in front of our line, to acquaint them with the ground. All these preparations were under fire. Two days later when Brigade Headquarters was heavily shelled and many casualties resulted, he went out to assist the medical officer to remove the wounded to places of safety, although he was himself suffering severely from gas and other shell effects. He again on a subsequent occasion showed supreme courage in tending wounded under heavy shell fire. He finally returned to the front line to ascertain the situation after an unsuccessful attack and was shot and killed instantly.’

Ladies barbershop harmony chorus The Pitchpipers put on their glad rags and entertained the audience at a Strawberry Tea in aid of the Rowans Hospice on Saturday 20th July on Hayling Island. The show included a varied mixture of tunes, from traditional barbershop melodies such as “Give me a Barbershop Song”, right through to modern songs including “It’s Raining Men” by The Weather Girls; very ironic on such a sunny day. On top of other charity events, The Pitchpipers will be performing at Emsworth Show on Bank Holiday Monday 26th August, where they will also be selling delicious cakes, jams and chutneys. Pop along to their stand for a special treat – especially if it’s your birthday! DARING DORIS TO ABSEIL AGAIN At the age of 99, anyone could be forgiven for putting their feet up and taking it easy. Not ‘Daring’ Doris Long MBE; having already abseiled on her 99th birthday in May, incredible Doris is ready to do it all again but this time she will be abseiling down Portsmouth’s landmark building, the Spinnaker Tower, in aid of The Rowans Hospice. ABSEILING HAYLING On Saturday September 14th at Ward Court on Hayling Island, a Charity Abseil is being held. Five stories high, this is a daunting thought for those of us who have never attempted anything like this before. Luckily we are told that insurance in in place! We are hoping that 250 people will be Abseiling on the same day. The children of Hayling are asking for more adventurous Play Equipment in the Hayling Parks. We were aware that in these days of reduction of funding from Central Government to Local Councils, we would have to find another way to raise the money to do this. Our wonderful WPC Debbie Surridge who was instrumental in obtaining 50k to build the Hi Rock climbing wall at Hayling College has decided that an Abseil in aid of this will help provide an answer! She has persuaded Councillors Collins, Lenaghan and Turner from Hayling and Shimbart from Hart Plain so far, to take part. All will be seeking Sponsorship from residents which will be used towards this worthwhile cause. Other Officers and Councillors are expected to join us on the day. What’s on GET CRAFTY ON HAYLING ISLAND Two local charities team up to Get Crafty on Hayling Island Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation (DRWF) has teamed up with Caterpillar Crafts to offer a Crafty Community Games session as part of the Diabetes Wellness Weekend at the end of August 2013. The DRWF Wellness Weekend is for people living with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and is taking place at The Langstone Hotel on Hayling Island from Friday 30th August to Sunday 1st September. The Crafty Community Games session is on the Saturday morning from 10.30am to 1.30pm on the communal green, Northney Marina, Hayling Island, behind The Langstone Hotel. It’s aimed at parents, families and friends of children with Type 1 Diabetes. There will be a morning of fun activities and games and help and advice from invited groups and the DRWF team. Clair Martin explained: “We are delighted to be working with the team at DRWF to support their wellness event.

Borough residents are being encouraged to get on board with windsurfing taster sessions at the upcoming National Watersports Festival on Saturday 31 August and Sunday 1 September. Beginners (age 8 and older) will have a great opportunity to try out windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking for the first time, in the place where windsurfing was invented by Peter Chilvers in 1958. Sessions cost £12.50 for 8-17 year olds and £20 for over 18s. Each session will include free parking, 1½ hours tuition and all equipment - including boards and wetsuits. The sessions have been funded by Havant Borough Council, with training provided by professional coaches from OTC (Official Test Centre). The sessions are only available for Havant Borough

There is little doubt that Emsworth is a unique place, positioned at the top of Chichester Harbour, this pretty, old fishing town would be just as happy sitting by the sea in Cornwall or even Brittany. Hair and Beauty Bodyworks Beauty Arena Skincare: Facial Exfoliators What do they do and how do I use one? Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the skin surface. The skin does this naturally as the cells regenerate but adding an exfoliator to your skincare routine can speed up the process and have visible benefits. A facial exfoliant works to slough off surface dirt and cells that are clogging up pores. After cleansing the skin, an exfoliating product should be applied to the skin according to instruction (see below). Always follow this step by drying the skin and moisturising. Apply to cleansed skin using small circular movements concentrating on areas of dryness or congestion. Remove using a damp face cloth and warm water. ‘Gentle’ Exfoliator – This type would usually contain smaller exfoliating granules and suit most skin types. Apply as above. Cream/enzyme based Exfoliator – A granule free type exfoliant that is ideal for highly sensitive skins. Apply a thin layer to cleansed skin avoiding eye area. Leave for 5-10 minutes then remove using a damp face cloth. Benefits Exfoliating your skin can give immediate results - Skin will feel fresher, cleaner and look more radiant. With the end of the school year fast approaching, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance is launching their ‘Re-use Ya Shoes!’ campaign in schools across the County. Instead of binning old school shoes, football boots, trainers and wellies the charity is asking that people donate them and help to raise those vital funds to keep the Air Ambulance flying and saving lives. It doesn’t matter how old or what condition they are in, any shoe will do and they can all be recycled. Much like the ‘Bag A Bra’ campaign, the shoes are sold on through reputable traders in other countries, or if they are in really bad condition they can be used for parts to repair other footwear, so nothing is wasted. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance want local schools to get involved and take part in the ‘Re-use Ya Shoes’ appeal, asking children to fill as many

bags as they can and building a tower of shoes to see which school can get the highest tower for a prize. The new owners of Davies Pharmacy Keith Seston and his wife Anu, have been busy investigating all the nooks Keith Seston and crannies of the old building in preparation for some essential restoration work. Over the 150 years the site has operated as a pharmacy various items have been stored away and they offer a fascinating window to how medicines have changed since the Victorian times. “We have discovered mixtures that promise to cure whooping cough, cocaine lozenges for sore throats and any problems with rodents were dealt with cyanide!” explains Keith. “Many medicines used only 60 years ago would be considered harmful, illegal or ineffective today, but some of the containers are absolutely beautiful, small pieces of art in their own right. Our highlight was a block of Turkish opium

over 100 years old – needless to say the police quickly confiscated it.” Invoices dating back to 1840's highlight the importance of the railway as many products started to arrive from London. Better transport links enabled

Opera Comique Opera Comique is a society that draws its members from South East Hampshire and West Sussex generally bounded by Fareham, Petersfield, Chichester and the sea. Opera Comique takes its membership from local operatic societies and performs Gilbert and Sullivan charity concerts at various venues. Havant Light Opera produced a very successful production of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Gondoliers at the end of June at Havant's Spring Arts Centre. This was performed for 5 nights, was sold out on the Friday night and was highly acclaimed by both the cast and audience. Havant Light Opera are performing a full costumed production of the Gondoliers on Tuesday 1st October at the Gilbert & Sullivan festival and also on Thursday 3rd October at Horndean Musical Society.

TOY SHOP MOVES

Leigh Park's local toy shop has celebrated their first birthday by moving in to a brand new shop. Carousel Toys & Gifts have moved onto Park Parade following a successful first years' trading in Greywell Road. The new shop is around twice the size, which will mean more choice and variety for the public. The shop, which specialises in collectables such as Moshi Monsters, Skylanders, and Pokemon cards has gone from strength to strength, and is looking forward to the run up to Christmas. With under 5 months to go, a Christmas Club will shortly be set up allowing customers to save money and reserve presents. The new shop is open from 9:00-4:30 Monday to Saturday (2:30 on Wednesday).

The grand unveiling of the new salon at Havant Academy was marked by an end of year exhibition, showcasing the school’s excellent design work and business ideas. The exhibition consisted of a fashion show, which had costumes designed and made by the students themselves, refreshments made on sight by the catering students as well as workshops, arts and crafts and gaming stalls. The show was put on to support the World Challenge Charity and the Coco Foundation, organisations that are aptly supported at the Havant Academy who’s staff and students frequently hold fundraisers to support the work of each charity – the latest of which is the Facebook Challenge, so make sure you ‘Like’ Havant Academy on Facebook!

The fashion show worked with the students at the salon who helped out with models’ hair to fit in with the image achieved by the fashion students. Categories included 1960’s, Summer at the Beach, Punk Rock and Disney. Students were required to come up with a costume design, hair and make-up to match the complete look. Preparation took around two months and students got inspiration from image boards, favourite personalities and the internet. The students were led by Salon Manager Jo Barker, who was very proud of the student’s dedication to the project. The new salon at Havant Academy is open to the public and taking bookings now.

South Downs College Launch Boxing Academy The sport of boxing, has been added to the prestigious Academy at South Downs College in College Road, Purbrook, from September. The Academy gives talented students the support they need to enter the professional levels of their chosen sport. Postcode Publications recently reported on the College’s Football Academy that operates in partnership with Havant Hawks of the BSS Conference (South) League Yvonne Elliott; Head of Sport and Public Services at the College, referring to the Boxing course said, “I am really excited about the introduction of this new element to our academy provision. I believe it will allow students from all different backgrounds to study and achieve at College and that this will be linked with a fun and challenging sport.” The Boxing Students will study for a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma qualification, covering sports nutrition, the physiology of fitness and aspects sport psychology. Students will also do boxing training for at least six hours per week. The Awards teach the basics of fitness, discipline and boxing techniques and using

boxing for recreation, keeping fit and making friends. A Boxing Tutor Course will equip coaches with the skills to make noncontact sessions fun and engaging, whilst providing others such as PE teachers and Youth Workers with an introduction to boxing as a fun non-contact sport. The College Boxing Academy will operate in partnership with the Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy, which is already in partnership with Charter Academy that has a reputation for engaging young people in the City. Quniton “Q” Shillingford, ABA Advanced Coach at the College Academy and Head Coach of Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy, added “Students will complete a high level academic qualification alongside boxing qualifications. Havant Hockey Club August is a busy month for Havant Hockey Club. The Club runs six women’s teams and 9 men’s teams and preparations for the 2013/14 season are getting underway. Jenny Bulled Vice-Chairman explained “We are providing evening sessions on Tuesdays for players keen to return to the game and pre- season training for our teams starts up in August”. The Club has a strong membership base that includes 250 youngsters from 4 to 18 years of age. All the activity at the Club is supported by a substantial coaching and training team. The men’s senior team plays in the EHL Conference West Division and the ladies team in South Division 1.

The full season starts in September with friendlies in the first 2 to 3 weeks of the month in preparation for the leagues starting towards the end of the month. The Club has boys and girls teams from under 12s to under 18s and minis for the under 10s There are three teams for Veterans and super-veterans Although the traditional home of the Hockey Club is Havant Park, its senior teams now play their matches on the excellent all weather pitch at Havant College in New Road Havant. Local Swimmer Oliver Jermy Selected for ISF World Schools Games in Brazil Hayling Islands Oliver Jermy, who swims for Havant & Waterlooville Swimming Club, has been selected for the England Schools Swimming Team in the ISF World Schools Games (World Oliver Jermy Gymnasiade), in Brasilia, Brazil from 27th November - 4th December 2013. Ollie (aged 16) has been selected for the 200m Backstroke event. This is a great honour for Ollie, his Coach Graham Pople, and the Swimming Club. Over forty countries will compete in the World Schools Games, held every four years. Ollie, a National Silver and Bronze medallist faces four days of competition in Brasilia. All the England swimmers will follow the full British Swimming Protocol for Internationals competing at the World Class level. Havant. Club individuals and teams compete at County, regional and national level events. The Club’s recent Midsummer Open Meet (part of the Hampshire ASA Development Meet fixtures for young swimmers from Clubs throughout the County) was well attended. Over the weekend The Club’s young swimmers performed well. Events were held in all four of the swimming strokes (freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly) for boys and girls of age groups 9 – 10 years through to 15 years and over. In the Girls 9 – 10 age group the Club had awards for a fourth place out 44 contestants and for third and 8th placings in same age group for boys. Individual swimmers won an array of gold, silver and bronze awards in their events. The Club is arranging a team of swimmers to attend the 2013 National Championships in Coventry. Special team Tshirts are sponsored by the Meridian Shopping Centre, and Postcode Publications.

The Aegon Summer County Cup Week at The Avenue Lawn Tennis Club in Denvilles from 22 – 26 July was successfully completed in conditions of record high temperatures and virtually no delays. The men's doubles were played at a standard not seen at the club for decades, if ever. Hampshire & IOW’s top player was Josh Goodall, born in Basingstoke, and who reached the second round of Wimbledon in 2006 and 2010.

The courts played perfectly for the whole week, 12 months of preparation being topped off by the Club groundsmen with cutting and marking early every morning. The experience and dedication of the office staff ensured the smooth running of the week. The week provided two Chichester College students with work experience in Sports Massage Therapy. During the week visiting LTA officials appreciated everything the club had done for the tournament and the County Captains expressed their appreciation of 'an outstandingly friendly club'. The week resulted in Hampshire & IOW winning all their matches and retaining top spot in Group 2. Runnersup were Lancashire.

Hawks New Season Report Hawks Manager Lee Bradbury has been busy consolidating plans for the team for the new season. The big news is that last terms top scorer Ollie Palmer has signed for Football League Club, Mansfield Town. Ollie’s departure was on good terms with the Club. The timing was right for Ollie and ensured that Hawks were able to secure a substantial transfer fee. Lee Bradbury is working hard on the challenge of finding a solution to the replacement of Palmer. On other fronts Dan Strugnell (centre-back) has re-signed after turning down a contract offer from AFC Bournemouth. Dan who played on loan for Hawks last season explained “The contract offer from AFC Bournemouth was short term and I did a lot of thinking about my future at the end of last season. I witnessed others playing for the Hawks last season who are now playing at a much higher level after performing well at this level”. New faces include Nic Ciardini (midfield) from Farnborough and Daniel Blanchett (left-back) who has been at various league clubs and is an experienced full-back. Bradbury hopes to complete further signings to strengthen the sqad for

the new season. Bradbury has given pre-season debuts to two 17 year old local Academy players Charlie Searle (goalkeeper) and Harry Wedlake (midfield). They will train with the first team alongside 19 year old former Academy team mate Joe Noakes. Noakes has been awarded a contract by the Club and has recovered from a slight knee injury to be fully fit for the new season. The Hawks start their campaign at big spending Ebbsfleet United on 17 August. Ebbsfleet are favorites for the Conference South title but Hawks Manager Lee Bradbury told Postcode he aims to send a message to the rest of the league with a positive result in their opening match. The 2012 London Olympics Legacy Postcode Publications is behind the 2012 London Olympics Legacy. With the first anniversary of the London event having just passed and celebrated extensively, we want to hear from local clubs and organisations willing to offer their facilities to youngsters to try. Children aged between about 4 - 11 years need to engage in various sports, games and physical activities for enjoyment and for the social aspects of their participation. This kind of connection is an important part of the early years of their development. It is therefore important for

parents to be able call on local clubs and organisations to give their children the chance to ‘have a go’. Children participating in these activities will develop the fundamental characteristics and physical attributes needed for sports in their middle years (aged 11 to 15). It is in these middle years of development that youngsters begin to invest more time and effort into one or a few preferred sports. Hayling Island - National Watersports Festival 30 August – 1 September This year’s National Watersports Festival, in association with Havant Borough Council, takes place on Hayling Island Sea Front (near Hayling Golf Club) over 3 days from Friday 30th August to Sunday 1st September 2013. This year’s Festival promises to be the biggest ever and to include Kite Surfing and Kayaking as well as Stand Up Paddle-boarding and Windsurfing. NWF started 8 years ago as the National Windsurfing Festival. There will also be an extensive trade-show, with the latest equipment available to view and buy and professionals on hand to offer advice (last year Windsurfing’s Team GB Olympic Silver Medalist, Nick Dempsey was present). NWF also raises money for W4CR (Watersports for Cancer Research) through a charity auction of items donated by the industry and exhibitors. Peter Hart (Former British & World

As a local fitness instructor and mum myself I often get asked by parents facing the school holidays how they can keep their fitness levels up and their weight down when they’re unable to attend the

regular High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) or running sessions I run as the children are home. My advice is to keep calm and adapt. Look out for my early morning HIIT sessions; some start as early as 6am. These are a great workout; cardio for fat burning and conditioning for strength and muscle definition. The exercises are suitable for all levels of fitness and easily adapted to do at home between sessions. Why not join your local Parkrun too? (www.parkrun.org.uk) They’re FREE timed 5K runs every Saturday morning and the whole family can get involved, including your dog! They’re fun, friendly and supportive, log on to find ones local to you. Changing your exercise routine can give your fitness a real boost. This edition Joy shares an idea to tidy away our carrier bags with The One Armed Bag Tidy…designed by you! To make your bag tidy you will need: An old shirt (larger sized preferably to have a bigger sleeve) 1/2 metre ribbon Buttons…and a sewing machine.

Step 1 – Preparation Iron sleeve flat and cut at top edge. Fold over top edge by 1cm and machine stitch a straight seam. STEP 1

Step 2 – The casing for the hanging loop Fold again making a 2cm fold and machine a straight stitch close to the edge. This will form the casing for the ribbon. DON'T FORGET TO LEAVE A GAP OF 2CM so the ribbon can be threaded in.

Step 3 – Completing the hanging loop Thread the ribbon through the casing using a bodkin or safety pin. Snip ends of ribbon diagonally to prevent them fraying. I added a button to tie the ends together to form the hanging loop.

Step 4 – Cuff End The end of my sleeve had a dress cuff with 2 buttonholes for cufflinks so I found 2 large buttons and stitched them on together, at the same time, through the buttonholes. I thought this was a fun way to narrow the gap at the other end where you pull out the bags.

As a wise old sage once said ‘One picture can tell a thousand words’ (not sure if that was me or not!) as a photographer, it fits our marketing philosophy. However there are photographs and photographs. I am constantly amazed at the poor quality of images found on websites that just don’t display the professional image the website owner was aiming for I’m sure! Often, it can be the difference in making a sale or not. I’m pleased to say there is still good, imaginative, well lit and composed photography to be found, generally commissioned by companies poised for the economic upswing (yes, it’s coming!). Cystic FibrosIS our Challenge Havant and Waterlooville are part of the Portsmouth Branch of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, a national charity fighting for over 9000 children and adults in the UK, including local families. CF Week was 24-30 June, but you may not have noticed! Why? CF is rare, occurring in about one in every 2500 births. This explains why our Branch is small in number, made up of parents, aged from 30+ to 80+, aunts, grandparents and true friends, including an ex GOS nurse who never forgot her young CF patients, and a wonderful Canadian lady whose support started over 40 years ago. We are spread out over a huge area but meet once a month to swap news. We try to do something special together once a year, whilst quietly beavering away the rest of the time. The apprentices of Defence Munitions raised £748, through a bike ride, and presented the cheque to young Ethan Marvin of Lee-on- the- Solent (pictured). Kate Jo & Sophie (Now you see us, now you don’t) are running 250 km, 5

kilometres a day for 50 consecutive days, and so far have raised over £500 through Virgin Giving. In Hayling, a sale of prints and cards in the recent Maydays arts trail, and donations instead of birthday cards raised £400. Fundraising apart, the message of CF Week was that 1 out of 3 CF patients whose health has deteriorated so much will need a lung transplant. The Trust’s new website www.cysticfibrosis.org.uk is full of information on organ donating, gene therapy and many different aspects of its work. You’ve probably heard of the theory of 6 Degrees of Separation! You’ll know, or will know someone whose life has been touched by CF, but won’t realise, because CF is a hidden condition. Nowadays patients may look very well, yet they all have to have treatment every day of their lives. CF is carried by 1 in 25 of us, so in the Portsmouth Urban Area, with a population of 520,000, there will probably be over 20,000 carriers. The Trust is a good cause, and believes that with better understanding, cystic fibrosis can be beaten.

FRIENDS OF CHICHESTER HARBOUR EXCLUSIVE GUIDED WALK AROUND SANDY POINT NATURE RESERVE FOLLOWED BY DINNER AT HAYLING ISLAND SAILING CLUB The Friends of Chichester Harbour recently enjoyed a Walk around Sandy Point Nature Reserve on Hayling Island which is owned by the Chichester Harbour Trust and is not normally open to the public. The walk was led by Peter Potts the Warden. After the Walk the Friends gathered in the

bar and on the balcony at Hayling Island Sailing Club where they enjoyed panoramic views of the entrance to Chichester Harbour and the Nab Tower in the distance. They all then enjoyed an interesting illustrated presentation by club member Belinda Cook on the History of HISC before a delicious Dinner was served.

The Bedhampton Safer Neighbourhood Team is looking for volunteers. Do you perceive speeding to be a problem in your area? Then why not volunteer to be a part of Community SpeedWatch. Community SpeedWatch allows members of the community to become police support volunteers and take action, helping us to educate drivers on the roads of concern in your area. The scheme is managed by your local Safer Neighbourhood Team but is run by volunteers.Volunteers will use equipment that can monitor the speed of passing traffic and record the details, later adding them to a database.Vehicle checks will be undertaken by the police and letters will then be sent to the registered keepers advising them of the speed and reminding them of why it is a community concern. SpeedWatch is not enforcement, it is education. It is important to know that SpeedWatch now forms part of our response to speeding issues. It is the first tier in our response to dealing with this problem. If a problem persists, we will escalate to tier two, meaning that enforcement can be undertaken by the police Safer Neighbourhood teams. Bigger, Better, and More Creative! That's the 2nd WemsFest arts festival which takes place from 13-29 September. Nearly sixty events over an area bordered by Bosham, Emsworth, and Stansted cover a vast spectrum of the arts from folk, jazz, and popular music to opera, theatre, walks and talks. Designed deliberately to bring the arts to places where opportunities are often few and far between WemsFest not surprisingly uses some unusual venues. The tiny Chapel in Westbourne Cemetery is a fitting venue for an evening of ghost tales and other hauntings, as well as for a one-man show about Lenin, and a theatre production straight from the Edinburgh Festival. Nicolino's Italian restaurant hosts Oyster Opera who will serenade diners with an all-Italian programme, and the fascinating Tuppenny Barn is the home to Chris Jagger - brother of Rolling Stone's Mick. The Pavilion at Stansted provides a direct historical link to the past by staging 3 evenings of The New Jerusalem which was written by the onetime owner of Stansted House. Out of last year's inaugural WemsFest came a community theatre company 'Rogues & Vagabonds', which is led by

Westbourne playwright and director Julian Sluggett, and he's written a series of sketches 'Racton Follies 2' and an adaptation of the children's theatre piece 'The Reluctant Dragon'. Actress Michele Dotrice - known to millions as Betty Spencer in 'Some Mothers Do 'ave 'em' is in conversation over afternoon tea with theatre director Roger Redfarn while American bluesman Doug MacLeod is over for a rare performance. Talent from the local community is very evident. Artist Sam Millington has 2 exhibitions of her own work and is also curating a pop-up art gallery, Xylophonist Chris Beaumont is in concert, and the Emsworth Community Singers,Village Voices, storyteller Lindsay Jerome, physicist Neil Williams, and WemsFest Celebrity String Ensemble are all giving performances.

It’s been seven years in the making and finally the end is in sight for the team at Tuppenny Barn. What once was a pioneering vision from founder and project leader Maggie Haynes, is now becoming a reality for our community. Positioned on the Hampshire/West Sussex border, Tuppenny Barn is a non-profit smallholding giving the local community the chance to learn about sustainable, organic and natural food production. Fruit, flowers, vegetables, herbs and plants are just some of the produce available to buy inside the on-site shop. However what really reflects the ethos of the Tuppenny Barn team is educational programme running alongside the business, giving special needs groups and children from all different walks of life the chance of learning how to grow their own fruit and vegetables and understanding the healthier options available to them. The focus is reaching out towards the families and children in disadvantaged areas, “showing how organic food production works, sharing knowledge about what makes good health and making a difference to family meals and minds.” The heart of the project has seen the build of the education centre on-site, although not yet completed it has already been home to numerous fundraising events and acted as a shelter for school visits. Again keeping in touch with their ethos, the education centre has been built in the most economical and sustainable way possible. The walls have been rendered with approximately 400 straw bales, donated by the community as part of the ‘sponsor a bale’ fundraising opportunity. It also uses 95% less concrete than a typical building of it’s size. The plans for it’s completion will see the centre renovated with a demonstration area during school visits also acting as an exhibition area for arts and crafts, a volunteer room and office, a cold room and a washroom. of all is the inclusion of a professional kitchen, therefore the ‘fork to fork’ principle can begin to be taught during school visits. This is a chance for children to see the process of the produce they have picked being transformed in the kitchen into a meal. All of this will be fully accessible for wheelchairs, enabling the whole community to be included within the project. The plans don’t stop there either, branching out further into the local community are the hopes to run courses within the centre such as jam making and even enthusing disadvantaged families to learn to cook. Themed events will also be taking place every so often and the centre space will be available for community use. As Tuppenny Barn is a non-profit business, all profits raised will be going straight back into the project making this a real asset to our community, we all should be proud of. Tuppenny Barn has already become such a huge part of the community already, however there is still a long way to go to reach the final dream. An astonishing amount of help and backing from the community, volunteers, Chichester Harbour Conservancy, The Roddick Foundation, West Sussex County Council and Chichester District Council has got Tuppenny Barn where it is today. With £200,000 already raised and put straight into the project, that leaves £95,000 still to go which will complete the education centre. The aim is for the project to be completed by the end of this year if the funds can be found, therefore the team have been undertaking extensive fundraising and working incredibly hard to see their dream become a reality.
