PO10 RESIDENT SPORTS SICILIAN CAR A very unusual vehicle bought at Silverstone Auctions comes to Emsworth.

A 1965 Fiat Abarth 695ss white left-hand-drive came to light recently from an Italian collection for sale at Silverstone.

With only two previous Italian owners, the car now for the first time registered in the UK was first registered in Sicily - Corleone?

The fully original vehicle takes us back to the sixties era, when the designer Carlo Arbarth was closely associated with the Fiat 500 design.

Keep your eyes open and you may see it in the Emsworth area and let us know in you’re aware of any other examples.

ROMAN WELL DISCOVERY

A team of archaeologists from Southampton discovered a Roman sacred well buried in the grounds of the old Homewell house (old conservative club building) as preparations are made for an extension. Havant resident Professor Konrad Morgan visited the site and produced the pictures.

The lead archaeologist told Konrad they had found animal bones, coins and a ring at the bottom of the well. The coins date from around the 2nd century AD. “It is a real bit of local history. It is entirely possible that this well is the actual sacred site that gave our borough it's name.

It is known that Roman sacred sites were adopted by the later Anglo Saxons.

Given that level of importance many towns would have a perspex (transparent) cover put over the Roman well and make it into an historical landmark. However, under the supervision of the County Archaeologist the well was protected and capped.

The find will remain safely beneath the new building for future archaeologists to discover if ever the site is redeveloped.

For those who travel through St Pancras station on their way to and from the continent, there are two Street Pianos available in the concourse for anyone to play as they wait for their connection - even a romantic one! What a way to woo!

Sculpture takes shape Chain saw artist, Matthew Crabb began work on his design to create an artistic tree sculpture outside the Public Service Plaza in Havant.

Owing to a limb falling in the strong winds last year, the tree was reduced to a stump for health and safety reasons. It was decided, at that point, that this should be carved into a work of art.

Matthew completed his work quickly - it’s really worth a visit to see it - in time for the planned Community Open Day event, which takes place on Tuesday 16th July.

Her Royal Highness, the Princess Royal will be attending the event.

Matthew’s design and creative ideas won a competition to complete the project.

WemsFest 2013 is a glorious celebration of the arts with international names and local talent in abundance.

From last year’s modest but bold beginnings we've blossomed out 1 We now have our own community theatre company - Rogues & Vagabonds - which will present Kenneth Graeme’s 'The Reluctant Dragon' and the upgraded and improved ‘Racton Follies 2'. Julian Sluggett (Westboume) WemsFest's Creative Director is heavily involved with both productions as both director and writer respectively. Five local primary schools are actively participating in The Reluctant Dragon.

The involvement of creative people from within our communities is crucial to the development not only of WemsFest but of their own individual talents.

Were delighted that around half the programme draws upon this local talent including:Voices in Performance, Titchfield Festival Theatre, Andy Bumfrey, Chris Beaumont, Roger Redfarn, Sarah Hutchinson & Nikki Chester, WemsFest Celebrity String Ensemble, Rogues & Vagabonds, and The New Jerusalem. There's also a crucial visual arts facility with a Popup An Gallery for 3 days, and 2 exhibitions

International folk and blues artists include Scottish band ‘Session A9' Fairport Convention's fiddler Ric Sanders, US bluesman Doug MacLeod and boogiewoogie pianist Ben Waters. Nationally known actress Amanda Waring appears in her acclaimed one--woman show For the Love of Chocolate' and another national treasure Michele Dotrice, is in conversation over tea with Roger Redfarn. Pamela Howard OBE directs 'The New Jerusalem' in The Pavilion and it's expected to transfer to London in 2014.

New venues include the apt Chapel in Westbourne Cemetery, Chidham & Hambrook Village Hall, Tuppenny Barn, and The Pavilion (Stansted Park).

BEACON FOOD BANK Hidden away on the first floor of the Meridian Shopping Centre in Havant is the Beacon coffee lounge.Volunteers from the community, work behind the scenes, sorting donated food and preparing hampers. Clients are referred by local charities and support workers and appointments are then made to come and collect the food required.

Contact Centres under pressure Since 1 April 2013, there have been drastic cuts to legal aid. This has led to a rise of people representing themselves. DIY SCRUNCHIE IN 5 MINUTES

They were once fashionable in the 90’s and now they’re back! Scrunchies are such fun accessories for your hair, which add a personal touch when you hand-made it yourself.

Material you will need: 50cm x 12cm of your desired fabric, 6” of elastic, needle, thread and scissors.

Fold the fabric in half lengthways and sew along the longest side, leaving two openings on each side.

Attach a safety pin to one end of elastic whilst holding onto the other end and feed it through the tube.

Bring the two ends of the elastic together and tie a double knot to secure it.

Place one end of the tube into the other and sew it close, and you’re done!

This edition, Joy shows us how to make a “Pride & Peg Bag”. A peg bag, designed by you.

You will need: • 1 wire coat hanger/or plastic (these are not as strong) • fabric pieces: 1 - 16" square for the back 1 - 15"x 8.5" for the bottom front 1 - 15" x 8.5" for the top front 2 - strips 15" x 2" for the front edge opening (or bias binding) • scraps of material and a vanishing pen if you are planning an applique design on the front.

• thread, bonda web, a button, a small elastic hair tie Step 1 Bend the wire coat hanger into shape. Draw around one half of the top of coat hanger and draw a straight line about 12" long to form the bag sides and then a line across the bottom marking the centre point in line with the hook of the coat hanger. Add a 1/2" seam allowance. Fold the pattern in half and cut out.You now should have the perfect shape to use for the back of the peg bag.

Step 2 Using the back pattern piece as a template you can now make the front top and bottom pieces. Measure up 8" from the bottom of the pattern on both sides and draw a line straight across. This can then be used to cut out the front bottom piece.You can use the top piece to cut out the front top but you will need to add 1/2" to the bottom edge to form the overlap.

Step 3 Pin the paper pattern to the material and cut out all three pieces. At this point you can choose to add a design on the front or just keep it simple with some pattern fabric. If you have chosen to do appliqué: Cut out your shapes and bonda web them to the front of the peg bag. Draw on your design using a vanishing pen. Using a stabiliser underneath, free motion your design.

Step 4 Cut 2 strips 15" long x 2" wide to edge the top and bottom opening. This is a good place to also use ready made bias tape if you wish. Attach the edging strip by placing right sides of the fabric together along the bottom edge of the top front piece and stitch a 1/2" seam.

Step 5 Press the attached strip flat from the right side on both pieces. Turn over to the wrong side and press under 1/2". The strip should be even on both sides.

Run a line of straight stitching close to the bottom edge. Repeat the above with the top edge of the bottom front piece.

Step 6 Place together the top and bottom front pieces overlapping the top edge over the bottom edge. With right sides together place the back and front pieces together and pin in place making sure you pin the overlaps securely. Mark a small gap at the top to allow the coat hanger hook to go through. Stitch together the front and back with a 1/2" seam. Trim the seams and clip the corners. Neaten edges with zig zag stitch to prevent fraying. Turn right side out, pushing out corners and press. Push the hook through the small hole you left at the top.

GREEN FINGERS Echiums in Knox Road Letter received from Peter Russell

I just thought you might like to see some pictures of some plants we have grown in our garden in Havant, they are Echiums one of which is now nearly 4 meters tall and is flowering profusely now.

The flowers are favourites of bees and there is a constant stream of them all day in warm weather. The plant takes three years to flower from seed, in the first and second years the plant is quite a small shrub, but the third year the plant rises to great height, flowers for about 3 to 4 weeks then it produces the seed for regeneration. The plant then dies leaving room for its young so to speak.

They are more common in Cornwall where the weather is slightly warmer and are quite often seen in hedgerows.

Postcode Publications Your Local Chernobyl Link needs Host Families

The Havant and Waterlooville Link of Chernobyl Children Life Line has recently reformed with a new committee.

CCLL now has more than 165 links across the UK. Each link brings groups of children to the UK for a respite holiday.

Havant and Waterlooville plan to bring 12 children this summer.

Belarus, where most of the work is focused, received over 70% of the radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear explosion on April 26th 1986. As a result thousands are born every year who go on to develop thyroid cancer, bone cancer and Leukaemia.

Medical experts expect as many as 40% of the children exposed to Chernobyl’s radiation to develop thyroid cancer over the next 30 years. There are 800,000 children that desperately require a respite holiday.

During the month they are here, we take the children on many trips. These can be as simple as a trip to feed the ducks, Lego land or the not so favourite, dentist!

The children very rarely have ever received dental treatment before.

We don’t want to give the children a false impression of life in Britain, this is why we try to do lots of activities at minimal cost while still giving new experiences that they may never otherwise have.

The children are in the UK for four weeks as this is most beneficial for their health. They travel between the ages of 913 as this is when they are going through puberty and their thyroid gland is developing. Just by the children being in fresh clean air, unpolluted food and drink

can add two years to their life expectancy and will greatly reduce their chances of getting Thyroid cancer.

We have twelve children booked to come over during the summer. However we still desperately need host families for some of these children. If you are interested please contact us. We will meet up with you for an informal chat and answer any questions you may have.

All children are put with another child of the same sex to avoid them feeling so isolated in a foreign country where they speak no English.

Host families welcome children into their homes as part of their own family. A hosting family gets no financial reward - the reward comes in seeing children blossom during their time in the UK. Over the year we hold many different fundraising events; such as Quizzes, clothes sale and dances. Please look at our Facebook page to keep up to date with upcoming events.

We currently are in urgent need of good quality clothes both for the children (ages 10-13) and for us to sell. We collect bric-a-brac to help us raise funds, along with items for the children to take home with them. We are always updated our 'Wish List' but are currently looking for seeds to send home with the children so they can grow food in their gardens.

It is great to see lots of people out and about walking and gardening now the weather has improved.

I hope you found the advice about calf strains and exercises useful in the last issue of PO9. I see a lot of people with sciatica especially now the nice weather has arrived and lots of people are lifting and bending for long periods in their gardens and bending during different activities. Most people with this problem have pain all the way down one leg and sometimes but not always in their back when standing and first

walking after sitting, when driving, bending and lifting. Most people describe feeling really stiff in the mornings and struggle to bend to put their socks and shoes on.

Sciatica is a pain that is caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, which is the large nerve that runs all the way down the back of your leg.

Normally, but not always sciatica is due to a slipped disc in your lower back. I am going to give you some advice and exercises which will help with sciatica.

Please seek immediate medical attention with any symptoms of progressive lower leg weakness and/or loss of bladder or bowel control.

Back Extension (Lying) Lie on your front. Position your hands under your shoulders. Push up straightening your arms, keep your hips down. Repeat ten times, four times a day, the last one holding for thirty seconds.

Back Extension (Standing) Standing. Arch backwards, bending from the lower back. Repeat ten times, three times a day.

Bridge The bridge is good for strengthening the core stability and gluteal muscles (buttocks).

Lie on the floor with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor.

Squeeze your gluteals and then push your hips up until there is a straight line through knee and hip to upper body and shoulders remain on the floor.

Hold ten seconds, repeat ten times, three times a day.

Get Active at the Staunton Festival

HEALTH & WELL-BEING Pilates - what is it anyway? NATIONAL DIABETES CHARITY

Many of you will have heard of Pilates, and some of you attend classes. This method of exercising the mind and body together was originally called ‘contrology’ by the man who invented it. Joseph Hubertus Pilates pioneered his philosophy for a fulfilled life using smooth flowing movements as part of his regime for a healthy mind and body.

A great character, Joseph started life as a sickly child and became a skilled gymnast, boxer and circus performer before developing his technique of ‘intelligent exercise’. Through thoughtful study of movement and other movement disciplines, such as yoga and kung fu, Pilates developed a series of specific choreographed movements to enable one’s body to perform efficiently. Many Pilates exercises look and feel familiar but are based on several main principles, regular practice being one of the most important!

I found out about Pilates from a Physiotherapy client of mine who was recovering from a serious skiing accident.

She asked when she could restart her ‘Pilates’ exercises – then she had to explain to me what Pilates was!! I was so intrigued

that I had to try it out, and then learn how to do it, and then how to teach it.

That was 12years ago, and I love it as much today as I did then – so does my body!

The Pilates method of exercise has adapted over the years as society’s posture and day to day activities have changed.

Instead of walking to work, we drive or commute in a seated position generally ( if you are lucky enough to get a seat on public transport!!). Instead of standing and moving around at work we tend to ‘drive a desk’ and perform repeated activities overusing one side of the body. No wonder we spend our lives ‘going round in circles’!

Pilates is best done with knowledge of the main principles – alignment, centre, breathing, stamina, flow and precision. It is enhanced by understanding opposition and dissociation – phew – now you can see why it is regarded as ‘intelligent exercise’.

TO MARK MAJOR MILESTONE A national diabetes charity based in Portsmouth is to stage a special weekend of events to mark its 15th anniversary on its own doorstep.

The Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation (DRWF) is to celebrate 15 years of supporting people with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes with a special weekend of events at the end of August on Hayling Island where its UK headquarters are based and in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard.

“The charity’s 15th anniversary celebrations provide an opportunity for everyone with an interest in diabetes to come together to share our vision for the future – a cure for diabetes,” said DRWF Chief Executive Sarah Bone.

“We thought it would be fitting to hold a special Wellness Weekend and 15th Anniversary fundraising ‘Crystal Ball’ at Boathouse No. 7 in the Historic Dockyard, Portsmouth on Saturday, 31st August to not only mark this important milestone for the charity but also to help people cope with Diabetes and to raise awareness of how to stay well when living

with the condition which currently affects more than three million Britons and is on the increase.”

Marlborough Pinot Noir 2010 from New Zealand The legendary red wine that is Pinot Noir may indeed be made from the most noble and ancient black grape ever to come out of Burgundy, in France, and from which the name Pinot Noir is derived; a grape considered to be one of the finest and most respected in the world. But, in its many and various incarnations, Pinot Noir can be one of the most infuriating red wines imaginable! Price-wise ranging, as it does, from £45 to £65 per bottle, and higher, at the luxury end; to £10 and cheaper, at the bottom - the price paid depends largely on how the wine is made, its characteristics, and where it comes from in terms of the tricky growing conditions needed for the grapes to thrive.Yet why is this, you might argue, when all these varieties of Pinot Noir have been produced from exactly the same grape? But, what really baffles so many people, is that in no way, it seems, can you be guided by price when it comes to deciding what is going to be the nicest wine for you. Why? Well, because the wine can differ so widely, in taste and flavour, with each individual variety. And it certainly doesn’t make things easier when the descriptions on the bottles are not much help either, if in fact they exist at all!

Or as one person put it to me: “It’s Pinot Noir; it’s got to be good, hasn’t it? At least, so I thought,” he went on, “Until I tried three different bottles of the stuff, with friends, the other evening; one bottle costing £5, another £10.99 and the other £28.99.

Whereupon, we all voted the cheaper wine, from Chile, to be the nicer by far; the middle one being relatively bland and tasteless; and the more expensive one of the three, pleasant enough, but on

the dry side, to our taste anyway! So, other than trial and error, how do you go about choosing?” he asked.

Well now, that’s a difficult one. Partly because this type of wine is, on the whole, an acquired taste, it must be said. In any event, can I suggest you try this, my third wine of the month: Marlborough Pinot Noir 2010 from New Zealand, as pictured?

Asda price, at the time of printing: £8.98 per bottle. For I promise, you will not be disappointed. Because when I first tasted this wine, how can I put it? I was immediately transported back to when I was a young lad, running through the woods on a rainy day; or on my bike splashing through puddles and getting soaked in the process. Memories, ay? But then, the first sense you have of this really lovely wine is of a damp, woody, wild mushroom flavour with hints of cherries and raspberries.Yes, a typical Pinot Noir? But, having said that, one that is very different from so many others! Why? Because it contains slightly less alcohol; which is the reason, I’m convinced, it is not so overpowering as other Pinot Noirs, or as they can be, especially when it comes to food. And I am thinking here of a delicious home-made chicken pie or sirloin steak with fresh salad and home cut chips…. Just to mention, that why the wine appears to complement pastries and pies, so well, is that it brings out any creamy buttery flavours…. And, finally, for dessert, you must try it with a typical summer fruit pudding. So catapulting this Pinot Noir from just an ‘alright’ red wine, to an out-and-out WOW! Oh, by the way, I so enjoyed Kathy Fitchett’s adjoining article, in Edition 3, entitled ‘Food Fiend Experience’ featuring her 'light' Chocolate Cake Recipe, I asked Kathy if she would like me to recommend a wine to go with the fantastic dish she has prepared opposite: Fattoush Salad. And, what do I suggest: InVino Garganega Pinot Grigio white wine from Asda.

Price: £4.00 per bottle, reduced from £6.28. For I think you will love the combination. And, talk about value for money! Anyway, have fun and enjoy.

Preparation: 1.

Dice cucumber, tomato and pepper

Fattoush salad - a healthy salad and dressing to get you in shape for the summer Did you know that the item that is the most calorific in a salad is the salad dressing and this is the oil component of the dressing?

In my version of this Arabic salad I actually omit the olive oil, although if you prefer, you can include it. I find that the combination of lemon juice (the bottled kind works perfectly well) with pepper, salt and garlic along with the finely chopped mint and parsley makes this salad dressing tasty enough that the olive oil is not needed.

This salad is so simple but has a freshness and lightness about it that makes it suitable for eating with grilled meat or barbecued meat. If you wanted to eat the salad on its own as a light lunch meal, just add some tinned chick peas.

Ingredients for 6 people: 4 toasted pita bread 4- 6 tomatoes, diced 1 cucumber, diced 5 spring onions, sliced (optional) 1/4 cup green pepper, diced (optional) 1 half head of romaine lettuce, torn into small pieces 1/4 cup parsley, chopped 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1/2 cup lemon juice 1/4 cup olive oil (optional) 1/4 cup fresh mint, chopped salt and pepper to taste I’m delighted to write that I am now working closely with Daniel Clark who is writing about wines and he will be marrying up a suitable affordable wine for you to enjoy with all the recipes that I produce. So now you will not only be able to enjoy healthy, tasty and easy to make food, you will be able to drink it with a good wine too!

Cut romaine lettuce into bite sized pieces

3. Finely chop mint and parsley

4. Combine lemon juice, garlic, mint and parsley in a jug and olive oil if using and stir well

5. Cut toasted pita bread into roughly 2 cm squares

Mix all prepared ingredients in a bowl and omit the pita bread if you want them to retain their crispiness. Make sure not to add the lemon juice for more than 30 minutes before you are due to eat. Toss well and leave to stand. Add the pita bread to the top just before you are ready to eat.

Cubs camping fun Over the half term holiday 8 Cubs accompanied by 2 Scouts and 6 leaders, enjoyed the excitement of outdoor adventure in the Hampshire countryside.

The cubs, aged between 8 & 10 ½ years, hiked to their camp site from a pre-arranged drop off point. Once at camp they spent three busy days playing sports such as cricket, football and athletics; undertaking scavenger hunts & string trails; and developing scouting skills such as building mini pioneering projects and fire lighting.

Camping is a key part of scouting but these cubs have had plenty of other exciting challenges over the past few months – they have been ten-pin bowling, visited a Hindu temple and been “locked up” in the local police station! All in all a very busy time for the cubs and their leaders!

“Inspire, Encourage, Adventure” – Three words recently used by Chief Scout Bear Grylls, to sum up Scouting. The leaders and young people of 1st West Leigh certainly lived up to that description!

Scouting is open to girls and boys from 6 years to 18 years old, new members both young and old are always welcome. There are great volunteering opportunities for adults who are interested in becoming involved in working with young people.

HAVANT LIBRARY CLOSURE Havant Library will be closing for a short period in September.

The closure will last for 2 weeks from September 9, 2013 and is to enable the installation of self-service technology at the Library.

Other libraries which have installed this technology have seen benefits in the amount of space available for the enhanced display of books and in improved customer service.

It is not intended that staffing levels will be affected by the self-service but staff time will be available to help customers and further develop local services.

The Library is scheduled to re-open on September 23.

A regular feature on local restaurants for your enjoyment - By Alan Westbrook

QUALITY ORIENTAL FOOD IN HAVANT Early one Thursday evening my partner and I decided to visit our local Chinese Restaurant AROMA in North Street, Havant. We have visited this establishment before - it is has attractive internal décor in a modernist style. The restaurant was a good two thirds full - wow we thought the food must be good or good value - I have to report it was both!

We decided to try the a la carte menu and ordered as a starter a mixed platter for two - an interesting selection of barbecued ribs, crispy seaweed, prawns on toast, satay chicken, spring rolls. sweet and sour and satay sauces - wow a feast in itself. For the main course we wanted to try a range of traditional dishes so went for duck in orange sauce, chicken curry, sweet and sour chicken, and an item that caught our eye: scallop and ginger "sizzler". With special fried rice and some noodles it was a truly tasty and well cooked selection of food.

Michael and his team should be congratulated in creating a very professional and enthusiastic team - our waiters Steven and Amy were very

attentive and efficient.

The restaurant has an excellent range of vegetarian dishes as well and also offers take away and home delivery services within 3 miles radius. A comprehensive range of wines and beers are also available. Michael says that"all ingredients and dishes are freshly prepared on a daily basis by trained and experienced chefs".

However the next time we visit,we shall take full advantage of their special BELLY BUSTER MENU - from a selected menu of more than 100 dishes you can order dishes of your choice and eat as much as you want - for £15 per head this is superb value for money (available Sunday to Thursday). It does mean we can explore the many oriental dishes on their extensive menu and we may find a new taste or favourite dish as well!

DYNAMO YOUTH THEATRE PERFORM AT THE PARK WOOD MAY FESTIVAL A month after performing at The Kings Theatre Southsea, Dynamo Youth Theatre was performing in a completely different setting. Dynamo was invited by the Friends of Park Wood to perform in their lovely wood in Waterlooville as part of the May Festival. Always up for creative challenge, the group performed a short piece called ‘The Giant Menace’ written by senior member Amy Larham. The play was performed several times as the audience enjoying the Festival strolled past. ‘The wood is a magical place and despite the logistical difficulties of performing in a

wood, it was a very worthwhile project’ said Dynamo’s Artistic Director Andrew Bowker.

Dynamo’s next production will be a comedy ‘Nil by Mouth’ by John Chapman featuring the senior members who are leaving the group to go on to further education. It will be at The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre, Havant from Wednesday 4th September to Saturday 7th September.

Great Summer Events from Roebuck Drums Professional drummer Paul Roebuck’s drum events and clubs are usually reserved for schools and private functions, but this summer he is opening up several clubs for the whole community. Firstly on the 25th of July a special Olympic Opening Ceremony event, which is the anniversary of last year’s games, where participants learn on instruments used in the Ceremony, perform with the inear audio used by performers and gain an insight into the behind the scenes work that made it all happen.

There are several drum clubs at West Town Community Centre, on Hayling Island

every Wednesday, throughout the summer, which are suitable for anyone aged five or above. Both the Young Drummers and Adult Drummers groups will learn rhythms and beats using drums from all over the world, creating their own grooves. Another great club is the Boomwhacker group, open to children aged five to sixteen, where participants will learn well known popular songs, using the fantastic Boomwhacker instruments.

Bedhampton Summer Show Saturday 6th July 2.00 until 5-00pm Bidbury Mead The largest free community event in the Havant calendar. A typical village fete with side shows, stalls and arena events including children’s fancy dress and novelty races. This year’s Show has the theme ‘1950s Red, White and Blue’ and will be opened at 2.00pm by the Mayor of Havant Councillor Paul Buckley.

The main attraction will be displays by the Royal Marines Volunteer Cadet Corps Portsmouth Division including field gun crew and marching band. A display of dolls dressed as ‘Royal Personages’ will be housed in the nearby historic St Thomas’s Church. The Portsmouth City Band will entertain those taking tea.

New this year will be a pre-Show opportunity for local teddy bears to gather for a picnic from 1pm with a prize for the best dressed amongst them.

All proceeds will go towards the upkeep and work of St Thomas and St Nicholas in the local community. 2012 proved that despite poor weather the Show will always go on. Come and join us!

The next Air ACES talk event will be held at 7.30pm on Monday 22nd July 2013 at the Chichester Park Hotel, Madgwick Lane, Westhampnett, Chichester, PO19 7QL (behind Sainsbury’s on the Chichester by-pass).

Dr. Robert Pleming, Chief Executive of ‘The Vulcan to the Sky Trust’ – VULCAN XH588 will give a talk entitled ‘the Vulcan story’ The Avro Vulcan’s origins are to be found nearly 70 years ago, at the end of the Second World War. The Vulcan Story summarises the history of the aircraft from its inception, through RAF service to the only time it was used in anger – The Falklands war.

Following the end of the aircraft’s military service, the project to restore Avro Vulcan XH588 to flight is possibly the most difficult historic aircraft restoration project ever undertaken in the UK, and one which has established a wealth of best practice.

The talk will summarise the background and significance of the programme, and then focus on the restoration project itself.

In particular, various problems and issues encountered will be highlighted, together

with how they were overcome, leading to the spectacular first test flight on 18th October 2007. Since then,Vulcan XH588 has flown for about 4 hours a year, at events and displays in front of audiences totaling over 10 million people. Finally, the talk will explain the current status of the programme, the challenges it faces keeping the aircraft flying, and proposals for the longer term, including the broader public benefits.

Another ‘not to be missed talk’ by the fast growing Air ACES – the ‘Air Talk Society’.

These talks are not only for air-minded folk, but for everyone. All will be very welcome.

THE SPRING TILE CAMPAIGN The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre in Havant has joined forces with the Havant Civic Society and the Friends of the Havant Museum in the next stage of the Havant War Memorial Hospital Tiles story.

The ten Royal Doultan tiles, which depict children’s nursery rhymes, were originally part of the children’s ward at the Havant Memorial Hospital. When the building was sold the local community banded together to save the valuable tiles.

Now saved and restored the tiles are ready to be exhibited, but another problem has arisen.

Each of the ceramic tiles weighs over 40kg and as The Spring are planning to exhibit all ten tiles in the building’s gallery space, the arts and heritage centre needs to raise funds in order to display them safely in an exhibition that will run from August to October 2013.

Director of The Spring Sophie Fullerlove explains: “These tiles are an important part of Havant’s heritage and we are in the last stages of planning a full exhibition of the tiles for the summer and autumn. The size and weight of each tile means we are having specially constructed plinths made along with professionally created signage. The exhibition will cost around £4500 and we need to raise this money quickly in order to ensure the tiles can be safely displayed.”

In order to raise the money The Spring has joined forces with Havant Civic Society and the Friends of the Havant Museum who are all working towards the project and helping to raise the money.

As part of the campaign The Spring has also set arranged a new text messaging service so the public can donate on the move. Using Vodafone’s Just Text Giving Service supporters can now donate to the campaign by texting TILES01 and either 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 to 70070 to make their donation. This service is completely free to both the donor and The Spring, who

Sophie continues: “The public were so enthusiastic about saving the tiles when we were at risk of losing them that I hope people will feel able to support them in the next stage of their journey. We want the tiles to be on display here for an exhibition and without the public’s support this may not be possible.”

“This is not simply about the summer exhibition. We are currently in conversation with Hampshire County Council, who now own the tiles, about three of them being displayed here permanently. By raising £4500 over the next few months this will be possible.”

Hayling Island Real Ale Festival The Hayling Royal British Legion Club is to hold their first Real Ale Festival on 13th July 2013.

“There will be twenty real ales and six ciders to try, all sourced from local breweries - Havant Brewery will be supplying their range of beers plus other Hampshire brewers and some from further afield” says Chris Frith.

Her Royal Highness will open the Plaza as part of the Havant Borough Council Community Open Day event on Tuesday 16th July.

Havant’s Public Service Plaza represents a new way of partnership working to deliver public service excellence. The refurbishment of the building, completed a year ago, is now occupied by Havant Borough Council staff and partners, Hampshire County Council Children’s and Adult Services and the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB).

The scheme is recognised by Government as a model for two-tier working across county and borough councils. The development of public service hubs supported by new technology and flexible working practices enables councils to deliver savings and more joined-up public services under one roof. As well as reducing running costs, it cuts their carbon footprints and the sale of surplus buildings releases funds that go back into local services.

accessed through one central point and the open day is an opportunity for local residents and businesses to drop-in and see the facilities on offer at the Public Service Plaza, Civic Centre Road, Havant.

WICKES COLLEAGUES TAKE ON OAR-SOME CHALLENGE TO BEAT BLOOD CANCER The Havant Extra Wickes team is getting ready for The Big Rowathon which took place in every Wickes store in June to raise money for blood cancer charity, Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

Martin Newsham is the store manager at the Havant Extra branch of Wickes and is looking forward to working with his colleagues across the UK to raise an impressive £100,000 from the challenge.

Each store will be rowing the distance from Dover to Calais, and back (52.6 miles) on a static rowing machine over the course of just 8 hours. The dedicated colleagues will take 30 minutes to an hour each to help complete the distance and will be seeking sponsorship from friends, family and customers to raise money for the blood cancer charity which has been the DIY chain’s national charity partner since October 2006. The partnership has so far raised over £3 million.

Martin said “I am really looking forward to working with my colleagues to complete this challenge, it will be a tough one with a few sore arms and legs at the end but that will be nothing compared to what blood cancer patients and their families have to go through on a daily basis. With the recent release of the latest adaptation of The Great Gatsby hitting cinemas, red carpets have been awash with celebrities dressed in 1920 inspired outfits with vintage wave hair and smoky eyes. 1920’s clothing has definitely made it into High Street stores so below we’ll show you how the ladies of that era applied their makeup to complete the look.

Hair today

The first step in a 1920’s girls routine would be to apply a cream or ivory face powder. Towards the late twenties this changed to a base powder matched to the natural hue of the skin.

To frame the eyes, a dark liner in black or brown was applied to the brows and shaped in an extended thin, sloping line. Dark liner was used to edge the eyes and sometimes a smear of turquoise or green was added.

A charcoal colour was then smudged across the eyelid creating a sultry smoky look. Tip: Use an eye shadow primer to help the eye makeup stay perfect all day/night.

To create this look line the lids using a kohl liner and using an eye shadow brush, press a dark grey powder shadow towards the outer socket and use a brush to blend across the lid.

The cheeks were given a pinched appearance by applying rouge (blusher) in shades of rose or raspberry. In the mid twenties peachy orange shades became popular

Lipstick was applied as a ‘Cupid’s Bow’ to exaggerate the shape of the upper lip and the bottom lip would be made to look fuller but with the width reduced.

Deep reds or brownish red colours would be worn on the lips.

Are your vegetables patchy?

We love the British weather here in the UK and it is so changeable that no wonder it is our favourite topic of conversation. We love the sunny days and wish they would last only for them to wash away with driving rain.

The delayed summer this year will not only undoubtedly have an effect on the area’s tourism, something which this area of the South coast particularly relies on, but what about our gardens? Our crops?

One local resident is certainly feeling the strain. David Barns from South Hayling said that he grew a lot of his own veg for years and has found it a very sustainable way to keep food on the table all year round.

Mr Barns, a keen gardener, particularly favours his veg crop that he maintains to a very high level all year round. Even in the winter he grows marrows, potatoes, carrots and even swedes and squash – with a little help from his greenhouse of course!

But even with the greenhouse and the best will in the world, Mr Barns’ vegetable crop this year is somewhat depleted.

“There was no sign of summer well into late April” Mr Barns said “and usually the growth shoots will have appeared by then as I think about planting out on the allotment during late May. This year the temperature just wouldn’t budge and I even resorted to bringing a few of the weaker seedlings indoors as the nights were proving to be too cold” Although Mr Barns is disappointed, he did still manage to grow a few crops.

“We’ve had a good show from the herbs this year” David said, “and due to the cooler weather the winter vegetables have also held on for a bit longer. But for the time of year we want the lettuces and the cucumbers too!”

David also said that his winter flowers were still in full bloom too and that spring and summer flowers were struggling. “My wife’s basket of violas that hangs by our front door are still in full bloom, but we’ve usually replaced them with a show of geraniums or petunias by now!” he said.

The Hayling Billy Line, opened in 1865, it ran for nearly 100 years transporting thousands on and off the island, holiday makers, school children and workers alike.

But was sadly closed in November 1963.

Now 50 years on its memory is fondly kept alive in our local community.

The Spring are organising a FREE open day celebration of local memories and the history of the beloved and much missed railway line on Saturday 2nd November commemorating the 50th year since closure of the Line. The Spring will be producing a booklet and film to celebrate the local community’s memories and love of the Billy Line; and to preserve its unique history for future generations.

You’re urged to come forward and share your memories/stories. Perhaps you rode the train to work? Did you enjoy many a summer holiday on Hayling Beach and the Billy line was your mode of transport? Perhaps you even worked at the station? Whatever your memory, big or small we want to know!

HAYLING BILLY CREW Whilst visiting my mum the other day I came across the article in Edition 7 appealing for information about the fireman pictured below.

I knew that one of our volunteer engine drivers used to work on the Hayling Billy Line some years ago. I showed him the article and lo and behold, he confirmed that he was the fireman in the picture.

V TEAM DO ‘GROUND FORCE’ STYLE GARDEN MAKEOVER

Made in Chelsea Stars come to Hayling Island’s Piranha Bar

A volunteering group has recently embarked on a garden makeover of a Community Centre in Emsworth. The V Team, a volunteering group made up of unemployed people and people who have mental health issues, was approached by The Emsworth Centre to transform an overgrown garden into a tranquil oasis that members of the public can use.

So Roll the Cameras, Made in Chelsea stars Ollie Locke and Cheska Hull get stranded out in the Solent on a fishing trip for over 2 hours!

No, this is not an episode from series 5. In fact these reality stars must have been kicking themselves that they had left the film crew back in Chelsea!

Just previously in an episode of the reality show, Ollie proudly talks of his planned trip out on his Fathers boat and with aspirations of catching some fish on a sunny Sunday in May, they made their way to the South Coast.

Hayling Island was the destination of choice they soaked up the sun and the stunning views of the Solent on the terrace of Piranha Bar before heading out on a RIB with fishing rods in tow. his friend and owner of Piranha Bar Vince But blissful times soon changed when Wonacott, they were able to return safely – fortune turned its hand on the famous tans, nails and hair intact! twosome. The first event took place on 19th April with over 10 V Team volunteers lending a hand. The key task was to cut down all the overgrown shrubs and trees and clear making it accessible for phase 2 of the project. Janet Duggan, Project Coordinator, said “it was fantastic to see people who have been out of work for a long time through having health issues, come together and work on a project with clear results. Through volunteering members are increasing their confidence and skills by working together and making a difference to the community”.

FRIENDS OF CHICHESTER HARBOUR BBQ Over 130 Friends of Chichester Harbour gathered on Thorney Island for their annual Barbecue at the beginning of June. A talented local professional photographer, Ali Warner, raffled one of her photographs of the Rother Valley cows, raising much needed funds for The Friends.

The Friends of Chichester Harbour provide vital funds for conservation, amenity and education projects in the Chichester Harbour area and are dedicated to helping to conserve and enhance the

harbour’s environment and to preserve it for future generations to enjoy. Funds are provided to support Education for all Ages and to maintain the historic ‘Terror’ exoyster fishing boat and the Solar Heritage.

Substantial funds also contributed to the conversion of The Stables (where the BBQ & other Friends events are held) from a derelict cow barn to the state of the art Agri-Education Centre it is today.

It has been busy behind the scenes at Hawks HQ as preparations are made for the new campaign. Firstly re-levelling and laying a new playing surface and then sprucing up the Ground which has received an ‘A’ grade listing. To encourage families this season two children up to age 16 will have free entry to matches with a paying adult. The Club has many family activities throughout the season.

Lee will operate with a squad of 16-18 quality players. Since Lee took over the team midway through last season the difference at the Club has been discernible. With the side struggling, Bradbury was quick to bring in youngsters on loan from football league sides. The team soon pushed up the table to finish a respectable tenth. As a result ‘Bradbury’s Babes’ such as Dan Butler (Portsmouth), Alex Grant (Stoke City), Chris Arthur (AFC Wimbledon) and Aaron Dawson (Exeter City) have all signed with professional League clubs.

For this season Lee Bradbury is looking to sign a goalkeeper and a left-back within a couple of weeks, while star striker Ollie Palmer, aged 21 - last season’s top scorer, remains at the club, though with Bradbury having to keep a tight rein on the pursestrings, a ‘big’ transfer fee may be hard to resist. was also the joint winner of the Golden Boot award with Jamie White (Salisbury) with each scoring 25 goals.

Also the Hawks in the community team won an award for best community club and a cheque for £10k which will greatly help the Club.

After the deciding day escape from relegation there were player departures and new signings - notably Sahr Kabba, from Weston-Super-Mare, and Clark Masters, from Eastbourne Borough.

Despite a good pre-season, the Hawks struggled, winning just one game before losing to North Leigh in the FA Cup at the first hurdle. Just three days later, after a further defeat to Weston-Super-Mare, new manager Stuart Ritchie and assistant Barry Blankley were sacked. Former Manager Shaun Gale and Adi Aymes took over until former Bournemouth manager and Portsmouth striker, Lee Bradbury became the new manager.

Lee Bradbury’s influence was soon evident and the turnaround saw Bradbury’s side finish 10th in the Blue Square Bet South, the league they have been in since its formation in 2004. When asked for his thoughts on the season, Bradbury said “[this season] was something to build on.

The foundations are here for us to try and build on next year”. Bradbury stated his ambition for the teams 10th season in the Conference South - to finish next season higher.

As to the outstanding performance of the season - it has to be that of young striker Ollie Palmer.

The Isles of Scilly welcomed Langstone Cutters Gig Club to the 24th World Pilot Gig Rowing Championships.

Seventeen members of the Langstone Cutters Gig Club made history in becoming the first Club from Hampshire to compete in the World Pilot Gig Championships, traditionally held over the May Bank holiday in the Isles of Scilly.

Over 2000 rowers from throughout the United Kingdom and Europe gathered for the event, which involves racing over 3 days for Ladies and Men’s Veterans (40+), Supervets (50+); and Open Men and ladies Classes. More than 130 pilot gigs lined up at the starting line for the major Open races which stretched for nearly a mile, watched by thousands of spectators and supporters who lined the harbour walls and boarded a flotilla of accompanying spectator boats at St Mary’s.

Friday night’s opening event featured the clubs Ladies Veteran and Men’s Supervets teams rowing a 1.6nm race in a heavy Atlantic swell from St Agnes to St Mary’s harbour entrance. Both teams coped well with the conditions and gained great confidence from the experience.

The Saturday and Sunday rounds of the competition – 4 races in all - resulted in a final position for both our Ladies and Men’s teams. Although we were in the bottom group of the Ladies and Men’s classification; both teams came a commendable 3rd place in group – beating other more established clubs. We were proud not to bring home the dreaded ‘wooden spoon’. Proof that even at this early stage in the Club’s development, we can compete. We learned a great deal about technique, timing and fitness and are determined to return to the Scillies next year, with the aim of obtaining

qualified coaching to rowers within the age group 14 to 35 years of age.

SPECTACULAR ROWING WEEKEND AT LANGSTONE Hampshire’s first two day Rowing Regatta was held at Langstone over the weekend of June 22nd and 23rd.

The Round Hayling race was held on Saturday 22nd and featured both gigs and traditional fixed seat rowing boats.

Also, on Sunday 23rd June the Gig Club hosted Hampshire’s first Pilot Gig Rowing Regatta, held within the area between Northney Marina, The Old Mill and Langstone Bridge. This featured gig rowing by men’s, ladies, mixed and junior crews representing clubs from the Jurassic coast of Dorset and the West Country.

Spectators viewed these events from the Langstone foreshore, Hayling Bridge and Northney foreshores, keen bot to miss this colourful and exciting event. Gig rowing is Britain’s fastest growing water sport and it is a first for Hayling Island.

Two GBR Olympic sailors from the 2012 London Olympics Team were at Hayling Island Sailing Club over the bank holiday weekend 4 – 6 May. On Sunday 5 May the Clubs youth sailors were joined by Olympian and World Match Racing Champion, Kate McGregor,.

More than 40 Youth sailors aged 8 – 15 years, some already world and national level youth sailors, took part in the special days racing and coaching with Kate in Chichester Harbour.

Rear Commodore Youth, Anne-Marie Woods explained “Before going afloat Kate talked to the group in the training room about her own experiences in the National Youth Squads, winning the 2010 World Match Racing Championship and her

amazing opportunity to train for, practice and compete in the 2012 London Olympics at the Weymouth venue. After this inspiring talk Kate joined the youngsters on the water to give them hints and top tips as they competed in a series of races under her watchful eye.”

The youngsters thanked Kate (pictured above) after she had handed out the prizes and signed autographs.

Kate told me “It was a brilliant day with the youngsters. They were great fun and very enthusiastic.”

On the Bank Holiday Monday the Club held an Open Day at Sandy Point. Olympic silver medallist Saskia Clark opened the event and was kept busy by young enthusiasts wanting to get first hand sailing tips and ask questions about Olympic sailing. The Volvo Sailing Academy provided a number of on shore activities and equipment including simulated windsurfing, virtual dinghy racing using SailX online and Power-kites with specialist coaches for newcomers to experience the thrills this fast growing part of sailing.

Volvo Sailing Academy’s Katherine Mason told me “The inaugural involvement of the Academy over the weekend and the Open Day was a great success.”

Widbrook United Girls v Mums

Bedhampton’s Bidbury Mead recreation ground on a Monday evening in June buzzed with excitement as the girls of Widbrook United Football Club trained for a busy end of season tournament schedule.

Widbrook United, established in 2012 for girls aged 9 to 16 years, is Bedhampton based with qualified FA coaches. The teams play in the Winchester and District Leagues with home games at Bidbury Mead on Saturday mornings between September and May. Widbrook are the only Havant team in the League which means lots of travelling.

With the main season over the Club had two 7-aside tournaments; at Petersfield Taro Leisure Centre on 15 June (in which Widbrook United teams – right, finished winners and runners-up), and the Hampshire Games Tournament at Aldershot a week later on 22 June. On the evening of the Hampshire Games Tournament, the under 10’s team was in Winchester to

collect the 2012/13 League Runners-up trophy.

Running the teams is costly. The girls pay match fees and the Club has sponsors.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance will be benefiting from funds raised by a team of five family members cycling along the Normandy coastline.

They will be departing England on Friday 28th June and arriving in the port of Ouistreham just outside of Caen. Starting the 250 kilometre trek on Sunday 29th June they are following the D-Day invasion beaches, along side invasion memorials dedicated to operation Overlord.

Fraser Rowbotham, paramedic with HIOWAA, who works for South Central Ambulance Service NHS Trust, organised the trip hoping to raise some well needed money for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.

Their first stop along the way will be Pegasus Bridge, before visiting the invasion beaches; Sword, Juno and Gold Beach.

Chief Executive for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, John Perry said, “We are delighted to be benefiting from such a wonderful money raising challenge. We really do appreciate all the donations we receive and try to support people in their events as much as possible. We rely solely on donations from members of the public to be able to continue flying and saving lives. We wish the team all the best in their challenge and hope they have a safe and enjoyable trip.”

After paying their respects in the cemetery at Omaha Beach, they will head off to Carenton, a medieval Norman town, then on to St Mere Eglise, Utah Beach and finally the hilly coast road to Cherbourg and the ferry home.

AEGON Summer County Cup Tennis Week By: Tim Randall

The Avenue Lawn Tennis Squash & Fitness Club behind the One Stop Shop in Southleigh Road, Denvilles is one of the grass court venues for this year’s national competition for County doubles teams. All the counties in England, with regional groups from Wales and Scotland, take part annually in seven divisions in County Week which this year is from 22 to 26 July.

As part of this year’s County Week the Avenue Tennis Club will stage the men's division two matches. This has local interest since the group includes Hampshire, together with Lancashire, Suffolk, Cheshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire. Two years ago Yorkshire's Jonathan Marray, current Wimbledon men's doubles champion (above) was playing in this division.

Play begins at 10.30 on 22 July and finishes around 5.00 pm each day. It is open to public spectators with free admission.

Refreshments are available all day.

Open Day The Avenue Club held an open day in May, providing the chance to view and try the racket sports and fitness activities. The Club has 10 grass, 4 Astro and 3 macadam tennis courts. The Astro and macadam courts are floodlit giving all year extended access. In addition there are three squash/racquetball courts and a gymnasium.

There are excellent coaching facilities for all of the Club’s racket sports and fitness trainers for those using the small well equipped gymnasium.

Any readers wishing to join the Club can do so by paying the normal joining fee of £50.

Havant Charity Football Tournament By: Tim Randall

Havant Charity Football Tournament The playing fields at Havant Rugby Club came alive on Saturday 18th May as some two hundred footballers competed in a charity tournament for the Rowans Hospice organised by Dunham Bush Football Club Secretary, Tony Wilkins and sponsored by Postcode Publications. The 6aside tournament was for players of all ages with a group stage and knock-out competition. The proceeds for the charity from the tournament, evening family fun/presentation, raffles and sponsor donations are expected to exceed £3000.

Castle United (pictured), from Rowlands Castle, were the winners of the main competition. Pompey Phoenix won the Plate competition. The format ensured teams were involved all day. Castle United played over 3 hours of football to win the trophy provided by Postcode Publications.

Event organiser Tony Wilkins said, “The event went really well. The players seemed to enjoy themselves and the occasion.

On Saturday 1st June, Emsworth Park filled with families itching to enjoy the sports and activities on show at this year’s FitBeat.

The event was opened by the Mayor and Buckley and Mrs Jackie Buckley and a performance from Gem’s Dance School, followed by a superb display of skill and nerve by Team GB gymnast, Harry Owen.

As nervous members of the crowd lay on the ground in a row, Commonwealth Games medal hopeful Harry, back flipped his way into the air over the line of quivering volunteers, landing with world class gymnastic finesse!

After the event Harry said “this is such a fantastic event and I am so delighted to be here to support the FitBeat team today in such a great cause. All being well, I will be competing next year in Glasgow at the Commonwealth Games and I would be delighted to come back to FitBeat in 2014 as an ambassador for the event: hopefully with a medal!”

Postcode Publications Oliver Jermy Selected for ISF World Schools By: Tim Randall Games in Brazil Hayling Island’s Oliver Jermy, who swims for Havant & Waterlooville Swimming Club, has been selected for the England Schools Swimming Team in the ISF World Schools Games (World Gymnasiade), in Brasilia, Brazil from 27th November - 4th December 2013. Oliver (aged 16) has been selected for the 200m Backstroke event. This is a great honour for Oliver, his Coach Graham Pople, and the Swimming Club.

Over forty countries will compete in the World Schools Games, which are held every four years. In addition to the swimming events England will be sending a National Schools Gymnastics Team.

Athletics is also part of the World Schools Games but England will not send a team this year.

Oliver, already a National Silver and Bronze medallist faces four days of competition in Brasilia. The ESSA coaches will liaise with Graham Pople, Head Coach at Havant & Waterlooville Swimming Club, on Oliver’s preparation in the lead-up to the Games. Oliver already practices for 13 -14 hpw. All England swimmers will follow full British Swimming Protocol for Internationals competing at the World Class level. There will be a Games opening and closing ceremony; all part of the preparation of young athletes for future

international and Olympic events.

The ESSA hopes to secure some sponsorship for the Team, but expects the swimmers to contribute and help raise money through local sponsorship and fund raising. ESSA will arrange England kit and has said that company logos can be embroidered on the kit of any swimmers they sponsor. Local businesses able to help Oliver please email Postcode Publications.

Havant & Waterlooville Swimming Club is based at the Leisure Centre in Waterberry Drive, Waterlooville. There are Members club nights with exclusive use of the pool on Wednesday evening’s at 6.30 pm. Membership is open to those aged 8 – 65+. The Club welcomes young and experienced swimmers and its aim is the enjoyment of swimming. The Club has National and Regional standard swimmers, and fully qualified coaches. Members train and practice at the pool mainly early mornings and Saturday’s. Teams compete at local, regional and national level. There was a Swim Meet at the Club on Sunday 23 June with swimmers from Clubs all over Hampshire competing. Denmead Charity Cycle Ride Saturday 27 July 2013 from 10am This regular event in the village of Denmead will this year raise money for ‘Hannah’s Holiday Home Appeal’. The charity offers FREE breaks to families and children with life threatening illnesses, undergoing or recovering from treatment, or coping with Bereavement.

The ride is open to cyclists of any age and ability, and is not a race. It starts from the Harvest Home pub in Denmead at 10:00 am. Three routes are available: • The shortest is 10 miles towards Clanfield, the Bat & Ball Public House, then back to Denmead.

Languedoc French Federation de Tennis Tournament for Elite 13 Year Olds Hayling U3A Cyclists on the Road

Just around the corner from our holiday home was tennis “les petits” Languedocians”. A French Tennis Federation Tournament for elite French boys and girls aged 13 years. I had to go and investigate. The clay court tournament was held at the Centre International de Tennis, Le Cap D’Agde from 22 – 25 May. 32 Boys and 28 girls were entered form all over France. Each player was ranked in the FTA’s La Pyramide du Classement de Tennis – Pyramide Messieurs et Dames 2 et 3 serie. The Boys 13ans Winner Director of the tournament Georges Torrese told me that “Those in the Federation’s Pyramide system receive coaching from qualified coaches. Each coach is allocated four players - two male,

two female. They stay together as they progress” The boys final was won by 3rd seed Arthur Bouquier, (pictured below) Franche Comte, beating top seed Luca Grandouiller, Lyonnais in a hard fought match 7/6 3/6 6/3. The girls champion was 2nd seed Clara Froget, (pictured left) Cote D’Azur who beat 4th seed Anais Lizarot, Languedoc Roussill 7/6 6/2.

The busy Centre International de Tennis (Richard Gasquet is a member and his father is its Director) boasts Girls 13ans Winner excellent facilities with 32 outdoor courts (28 hard courts and 6 clay courts) and six indoor courts. As well as the tournament most of the Centre’s courts were in use, many for intense coaching sessions.

Cyclists arrive at Buriton pond

Members of the Cycling for Pleasure group of the U3A (University of the Third Age) embarked on a ride up the Hayling Billy trail to Havant railway station, then boarding a train for the 10 minute journey to Petersfield. Six members of the group gathered for refreshments at a coffee shop in the square before setting out to ride home via Buriton and Finchdean. A photograph stop was made at the picturesque pond in Buriton before ascending the steep hill out of the village.

Once past that obstacle it was plain sailing in a gentle descent down to Finchdean where an excellent lunch and further refreshments were taken in the garden of

The George pub. After further photographs we continued our journey on to Rowlands Castle and Northney Farm Tea Rooms where we stopped again, this time for ice cream!

The total distance cycled was around 25 miles leaving West Town at 9.30am and returning home by 2.30pm. We were particularly lucky with the weather which was continuous sunshine throughout the ride. On our rides the pace is always slow to moderate ensuring that everyone has an enjoyable day without feeling that they have to keep up with others.

U3A cycle rides take place throughout the year on the first Tuesday of the month.

Previous summer rides have included Chichester by train, the Isle of Wight, Portsmouth/Gosport/Stokes Bay via the Hayling and Gosport ferries, and bracing winter rides to Emsworth, Rowlands Castle and Stansted.

Emsworth Primary School – Eco Day water cycle model we talked through the various stages of the water cycle and then got the children doing a practical exercise outdoors that showed them how water can travel through chalk and not through clay.

The day started promptly at 9.00 am and we delivered in total 10 sessions each throughout the day, most of them back to back. It was a long day but well worth the effort and you could see that the children loved it from their enthusiasm and shouting during the activities. Best of all is that we really believe that they went home that day better informed about water and saving water than when they arrived that day. Let’s hope they keep it up and pester Mum and Dad to do the same.

To finish off a wonderful experience, the children sent in a scrapbook with thank you notes inside and pictures of us delivering our sessions. The messages from the smaller children are really heart warming and you just know they mean what they say!

It was a great pleasure to have a second exhibition of Richard Pegg’s work in St. Nicholas Chapel, Langstone after the great success of his first exhibition last year.

Richard, who was born in1946, trained in illustration and graphic design at Portsmouth College of Art and has his own design studio at Rowlands Castle. He has been painting and drawing since his teenage years and recently his paintings have focussed on Chichester and Langstone Harbours and he comments: “Every day, people living in and around the area are rewarded with spectacular glimpses of the ever changing mood and light that never fails to lift the spirit.”

His second group of paintings

maintained the spirit and sensitivity to the changing nature of sea and sky, including this time more scenes to the west of this area, with some very atmospheric evening seascapes. A reference to the commemoration of 50 years since the closure of the “Hayling Billy” line is depicted in one of the paintings, the remains of the concrete piles reflected in the water and tracing the old route to Hayling Island.

A varied selection of people came into the chapel to enjoy the exhibition - friends, local people, hikers, passers-by - and all were refreshed by and very appreciative of Richard’s work. The pictures seemed to arouse a lot of nostalgic memories in some people who have very happy memories of Langstone.

Thank you Richard for bringing such pleasure to so many people and we look forward to your next exhibition.

Early in June Emsworth Primary School rang Portsmouth Water and asked us to take part in their Eco Day. The following week saw us meet with school staff involved with the Eco Day and suddenly we realised the enormity of the task in front of us. It was an event for the whole school lasting all day with ages ranging from 5 – 11 which meant in the words of Roy Scheider from the film Jaws “we’re going to need a bigger boat!”

We needed to have fun activities that would fit and engage all age groups. So we came up with a quiz on saving water where the children stood next to the person holding up what they thought was the right answer and getting a sticker for each time they got an answer right. We used a cool wall to get the girls and boys working competitively against each other. We showed the children a simple filtration experiment and wowed them with the horrible bugs that we have to clean from the water. Using our very own working

Hi. I’m Phill, 26 and just recently moved to Bedhampton so no longer a “Widley Boy”. I went to Purbrook Park School and then to South Downs College to do an ICT course. But radio is what I always wanted to do!

I got into radio because I enjoy the thrill of presenting and entertaining the public. I started off doing a 2 hour morning slot on Internet Radio for a station called Quality Beats in a little shed in Emsworth.

This then progressed onto ExpressFM with Sunday mornings, Saturday lunchtimes and now working my way up and earning a breakfast show slot.

The Breakfast show is growing everyday with more listeners joining the following everyday and more and more celebrity and businesses guests wanting to come on and share their product/event.

In preparation for their AS levels, drama students at South Downs College have been putting on a series of shows for family and friends.

During one recent show, South Downs student Lara Cooper-Chadwick, played a central role in the college’s adaptation of DBC Pierre’s ‘Vernon God Little’. She said “this play has been one of my favourite plays to act in. It was very interesting with a strong moral message and a clever satirical humour. I have enjoyed taking part in it and think it will very beneficial to my drama A level”.

Another cast member, George Woodgate, who played the charismatic sheriff in ‘Vernon God Little’ describes the scene backstage. He said “it was hectic but good fun and worth the hard work”.

Both students had the opportunity to showcase their musical talent in the play, and hope to continue performing in the future.

The play was enjoyed by everyone who came along to watch; hopefully, we can look forward to more outstanding performances from the drama department this coming academic year.

STATE OF NATURE REPORT

The results of the national, ‘State of Nature’ report reflects the position seen at Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Ed Rowsell, Conservation Officer for Chichester Harbour Conservancy stated, We applaud the national specialist wildlife organisations for their foresight in producing the ground-breaking piece of work. ‘State of Nature’. It will take some time to fully digest the findings of the report, but it confirms some worrying trends that are echoed in our own analyses on wildlife populations in and around Chichester Harbour.’

The report estimates that 60% of the species studied have declined in recent decades and 31% have declined strongly. The local picture in Chichester Harbour reflects this situation, with declines and loss in farmland bird species including Turtle Dove, Seabird

Colonies performing poorly with barely any young produced for the past few years and some rare plant species only hanging on in specially managed plots.

However, Ed adds, ‘there are winners as well as losers; Cetti’s Warbler and Little Egret have colonised the area in the past 30 years are continuing to consolidate their position.

Many of our over-wintering bird species for which Chichester Harbour is so important, including Brent Geese are maintaining fairly stable populations and the Solent Harbour Seal population continues to expand.’

Chichester Harbour Conservancy coordinates numerous projects largely involving volunteers in a range of wildlife monitoring activity. This extensive programme monitors the local situation as well as feeding data into national monitoring upon which the State of Nature report is based.

Wildflower meadow moves into place at the new Oaks Crematorium

Around 20 representatives from the funeral profession and religious organisations joined a ceremony to lay the first turf of a wildflower meadow in the grounds of The Southern Co-operative’s new crematorium for south and east Hampshire.

The planting of 20 square metres of mature wildflower meadow turf at ‘The Oaks’, Havant Crematorium, which is

currently under construction, marks the creation of the memorial garden and wider area of wildflower meadow. The crematorium is due to open this autumn.

Mark Smith, Chief Executive of The Southern Co-operative, said: “We wanted to share this stage of the development with our colleagues from the funeral profession and highlight one of the differences of this new crematorium, which is the quality of its environment. A large part of the 8 acres of land surrounding the crematorium will include wildflower meadow, so rather than a tree planting ceremony, we are laying 20 sq metres of wildflower meadow turf today.

We successfully bid for this turf at a fundraising auction held by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust to celebrate their 50th anniversary. The Trust is an important corporate partner that we

support and we’ve been working closely with them to make sure we get the most out of this site for the natural environment.”

Steve Pearce, Chief Operating Officer for End of Life Services at The Southern Cooperative, added: “We’ve been working closely with funeral directors locally with the development of the crematorium to ensure we incorporate their needs to provide the best service possible. We want to make sure that the experience of the bereaved, at probably the worst time of their life, has been considered from every perspective; the space, ambience, style of the service and look and feel of the premises has been thought about a lot. This is a 21st century crematorium for meeting the needs of the bereaved and it’s about the local communities that we all serve.”

The Southern Co-operative’s Head of

Sustainability, Gemma Lacey, said: “The wildflower meadow will be planted with native wildflower species including red campion, oxeye daisy, meadowsweet and cowslips. The surrounding native woodland of ancient oaks and yew trees is also carpeted with flowers including bluebells, wood sorrel and wood anemone which will enhance the tranquillity of the area.”

Gemma added: “As a co-operative, we are ethically led, so the design and running of The Southern Co-operative’s new crematorium has been planned to minimise its impact on the environment.”

Students at Warblington School showed good mathematical ability in the recent UKMT Junior Maths Challenge. Fourteen students achieved a certificate, placing them in the top 40% in the country.

Congratulations to Dougal Russell for coming top in the school and achieving a gold certificate, which places him in the top 6% Nationwide.

Other fine performances include silver certificates for Lance Dickinson and Bradley Turner and also Evangeline Needham, who achieved the highest result in Year 7. A hot and sunny 22 degrees was helped by a nice breeze which must have been welcomed by the athletes who pushed themselves hard on track and field in a year where a large number of new Sports Day records were broken.

Over 500 students and 80 members of

staff all contributed to making this the most enjoyable Sports Day in twelve years that I have been in charge of. Students competed against each other in their own year groups but ultimately towards winning a trophy on behalf of their country: A – Australia; B- Brazil; C – Canada; D – Denmark; E – Egypt; F – Finland.

In three teams and using maps and compasses they followed routes they had previously planned, starting at Queen Elizabeth Country Park, camping overnight and cooking their own supper at South Harting Camp, then hiking on the following day to West Marden.

teams managed to get back on track and felt a real sense of achievement on completing the hike.

“I really enjoyed my first over-nighter. It was great fun, although we got a bit wet.” – Oli. “It was a walk in the park! I was really exhausted; we got lost a couple of times, but it was great. I loved every second.” – Archie.

“I enjoyed the camping and spending time with friends.” – Lisa.

Norway rock at Eastoke Point Approximately 25,000 tonnes of Larvic Granite from Norway has started to be unloaded onto the beach at Eastoke Point, Hayling Island. The rock will be used to create a new revetment as part of the £5million Eastoke Point Coastal Defence Scheme.

The ‘Stema Barge’, which is due to make three large deliveries over the coming months, will be moored offshore before the rock is then transferred to the beach by a smaller barge 'Charlie Rock'. This will land on the foreshore day and night during every high tide until completed.

Each of the three barge deliveries carries approximately 5,500 rocks; enough to fill four Olympic sized swimming pools.

Described another way, if the rocks were to be stacked on top of each other they would be almost as tall as Mount Everest. The second barge is due to arrive in July.

Project Manager Marc Bryan said “The rock is the key to progressing this scheme and as soon as it arrives we can really start to move the works forward. This type of delivery does not occur very often and will be quite a spectacle for the public to see.”

Due to the shallow nature of the tides along the Hayling Frontage the rock can only be delivered to specific locations at Eastoke. Therefore further sections of

beach may need to be temporarily closedoff for the duration of the delivery to ensure public safety. High seas and poor weather delayed the departure of the barge from Norway by around 3 weeks however, it is still anticipated that the works at Eastoke will be completed on time.

The rock was sourced specifically for its durability and resistance to extreme environmental and its ability to resist the action of waves and tides. The quarry in Larvic, Norway, is one of the most reliable sources of this type of rock and has been used extensively around Europe for coastal defence schemes.

The preliminary work at Eastoke Point has progressed well including full site setup, the demolition of several old timber groynes, and the recovery of existing rock to be re-used in the new defences.

The first Hidden High Street event was held at The Greenhouse Café, Emsworth.

Businesses attended included The Hare and the Broom (Toys), Luxe Look Accessories (Handbags and Accessories), Stella & Dot (Jewellery), Japics Photographic (Fine Art Photography) and Eliza Mabel (Children’s Accessories).

The Greenhouse Café also sold their locally produced condiment range on the day.

Life in the View of a Teenager: The fight for a Job

Today, there is more pressure on teenagers than ever to get good grades at GCSE and beyond. As I am currently going through one of the most stressful times of my young and inexperienced life, I am slowly becoming more aware of the dire situation young people are in. As of April 2013 just over a fifth of 16-24 years olds are unemployed. This includes recently graduated pupils. But why is this? Is it the prejudice that young people now face in the work place? That we are unwilling to work? Or, is it the hard economic climate at this current time, with a possible 28 stores closing per day. Or is it more social reasons, with a slowly ageing population and people working for longer in some cases, its no surprise that employers cannot take on young people.

But, the stereotypical image of a teenager lounging around the work place,

making the occasional coffee and eating the occasional biscuit, may be putting employers off from employing and training young people for the future of the business.

I mean, and this sounds incredibly big headed, but today’s youth are tomorrow’s teachers, lawyers, politicians and police officers. And, without confidence in these young people, what hope does society have for the future? Furthermore, with today’s economic climate in such bad shape, young people need to be educated in improving the UK, and be taught about the mistakes, so that they may not be repeated.

I’m going off track, but without the trust of today’s employers, what will the future hold?

A career in construction

Local schoolgirl carves out plans for exciting new career in construction Fifteen year old Katherine Colley has her career all mapped out in construction, after landing a place on Barratt Homes' prestigious academy programme.

The Purbrook Park schoolgirl impressed during a two week work experience stint with the leading housebuilder in 2012. And now her efforts are being rewarded as she prepares to embark on her new career as a carpenter.

“Katherine has worked tremendously hard in her quest to work within what is a highly competitive industry,” said Barratt Homes community liaison manager Anthony Dimmick. “She was so determined

that she completed her Construction Skills Test, the entry requirement for an apprenticeship, at just fourteen years old.

“Now, even before leaving school, she has a fantastic career to look forward to.

And we are very much looking forward to welcoming her to our academy later this year.”

Barratt apprentices spend time in and out of the workplace – studying at college whilst gaining practical construction skills by helping to build homes on new developments in the area. All the while, they are earning a salary.

Katherine said her interest in becoming a carpenter dates back to year seven at school and teacher Mr Spencer who she describes as a great inspiration.

“I’ve also always enjoyed helping my dad on projects such as building a shed and

decking,’’ she said.

“I loved my work experience with Barratt and found it very useful. I spent time with lots of different teams which gave me the chance to see how different areas of the business worked and to see which aspects I liked best.

“Carpentry and joinery are my main interests, so the thought of taking another step towards my dream career is so exciting for me. I am looking forward to some very hard but really enjoyable work.

Mr Dimmick and Barratt have supported me from the very beginning and I am determined to repay the faith they have shown in me. I can't wait to get started.”

Starting a Business - while still at School In 2011, I started my first business called Benjamin Phillips Enterprises (BPE) while still at school in year 9. I am now in year 11 and am about to leave to go onto college. Over these years I have sourced, branded, purchased and retailed my own brand of computer screen cleaner.

Prior to this venture I had no experience is setting up or running a business but knew people who have. I got the idea after seeing a similar product at the Ideal Home Exhibition being sold at a high price and decided to have a go myself. I wanted to have a product that was of high quality, which I could offer at a reasonable price. With the help of people around me I created a logo and packaging designs with

feedback from teachers and students, financial documents, a website and much more. I also wrote to 10 Downing Street and received a reply. My letter was sent shortly after the London Riots and detailed what I had been doing in terms of BPE. It was great to receive a reply and their response can be seen on my website.

The biggest challenge with this venture is the initial ordering. A lot of time goes into choosing and developing the correct product and sorting out all the paper work associated with it. The best part of this process for me has been pitching to trade and the public. It is good to see people choosing to purchase and knowing all the

At the invitation of Headteacher Wendy Bolton, Cycle Hayling helped stage a cycling event on 11th June that involved all the pupils with bikes.

It was a busy afternoon. We split the pupils into teams and ran sessions for each team covering: a

speed challenge using a turbo trainer; a cycling benefits quiz; basic bike maintenance; 'show and tell' of equipment and different types of bike; and how to repair a puncture. The pupils decorated their bikes and entered a parade where we chose the best-looking ones for prizes.

Other prizes were awarded for the winners of the benefits quiz and the cycle challenge.

At the end of the day, we ran a 'Dr Bike' workshop so pupils and parents could bring bikes that needed some TLC. Prizes for the events were donated by Cycle Hayling and the Hampshire County Council Travel Team.

Charity Golf Day

The third annual 'Kick it into touch' charity golf day was held at the Rowland's Castle golf club in Havant earlier this month to raise money and awareness for the testicular cancer charity. With over one hundred keen golfers taking part in the competition, over £5,000 was raised, sure to make a huge difference for the 'Kick it into Touch' charity and associated local causes.

On what was a bitterly cold and windy day, with occasional flurries of snowfall ensuring the competitors had to wrap up warm, spirits were not dampened as everyone was in cheery and excited moods for the busiest day of the year for the golf course.

Among the golfers was former Liverpool and Pompey star Paul Walsh who was playing alongside ex England and Pompey forward Mark Chamberlin. “It's been a really good day with a great turn out, I don't know much about the charity but I'm happy to help raise as much money as possible" Walsh's team performed well in

the below par conditions and he was happy with his round. "Yeah it went well, but it doesn't matter at the end of the day, everyone meeting here and giving money is the most important thing".

The 'Kick it into touch' charity was founded by John Willis from Portchester, in 2010, after receiving treatment for testicular cancer himself. Now thankfully recovering again from the disease, this remarkable man, helped organise the golf day for the third successive year with the Golf course's shop owner Jimmy Klepacz and Jim Doye. I've already had huge interest and next year’s already booked".

The day saw exciting prizes on offer, thanks to sponsors of the day WKB Toyota motors and kindly offering a free Toyota car or a £1,500 holiday for anyone who achieved a hole in 1. Doye, a keen golfer, put his putter away for the day to make sure the day ran as smooth as possible and he explained his delight of the event being held for the third year in a row. After the fun filled day of golf, the players returned suited and booted for the evening meal. Paul Walsh also held a question and answer where he revealed some entertaining stories of his ex-football days ensuring a great round off to a hugely successful day.

The money raised from this great day is added to the £1,500 raised for the charity by four members of the Golf Club who rode from Portsmouth to Paris in March of this Year.

Volunteer Week 1st – 7th June 2013 The Sun Shone for Volunteers Week The Volunteer Service at Community First HEH celebrated this year’s Volunteer’s Week at Asda supermarket in Havant. The sun shone and the Volunteering Service team had a great day meeting interested people.

Volunteers’ Week is a national campaign and was celebrated across the UK. The aim was to raise awareness of the need for volunteers, giving the chance for anyone to come along and find out more.

Specsavers Havant has donated reading charts to the Rapid Assessment Unit at Oak Park Community Clinic.

The unit provides rapid, consultant led medical assessment of unwell, deteriorating patients at a point when early intervention

can avoid them being admitted to an acute hospital. They assess patients who are over 65 years old who are clinically well enough and safe to be at home until the next working day. Their aim is to give patients comprehensive assessment and instigate any necessary investigations and treatment while enabling patients to avoid hospital admission.

Four decades ago, little was understood about CF, and the prognosis was poor. But since then, new treatments have meant that many people with CF are living longer healthier lives.

Many are even reaching middle age. And babies diagnosed today will benefit from the many advances in medication and care.

There is now real hope that “Cystic FibrosIS a fight we can win.’’

But people with cystic fibrosis may eventually reach the point where a lung transplant is the only option if they are to survive and fulfil their potential. One in three will die on a waiting list.

So prompted by CF Week (JUNE 24 – 30), please take the trouble to visit the Trust’s new website: www.cysticfibrosis.org.uk, and find out more about the changing face of CF. Advances in genetic research and the transplant programme can benefit loved ones, whether they have CF, or many other illnesses.

Local Firm Wins Contract in South of France Following a concerted effort from the dedicated team at Havant Signs and Plastics, the company is entering final negotiations with ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) an international research organisation based in Cadarache in the South of France to manufacture, install and maintain all the internal and external signage on their new complex for a period of up to six years.

St John’s CEC Primary School has been working hard to improve its outdoor space and develop structured outdoor learning opportunities for its pupils and the wider community.

Imagine an outdoor area for children that includes a traversing wall, pond, sculptures and outdoor art, allotments, a worship and reflection area, a play stage, a learning hut, a woodland walk and much, much more...

With the help of parents, school governors, the PTA, staff, pupils and the generosity of businesses we have transformed part of the school field into an educational woodland walk and a story-telling area. Wood chipped pathways take the children on a journey of discovery, learning about their natural habitat.

Outstanding fundraising efforts and partnership working from the school governors, staff and the PTA means that the second phase of our outdoor learning project will be completed over the summer holidays. When the children return in September they will benefit from a bamboo garden, worship and reflection area and a cherry grove area.

We would like to express our thanks to Stansted House and Keyline for donating woodchip for our woodland walk pathways, Southern Electric for volunteering personnel and equipment to dig out our pathways. St John’s Church has made a significant financial contribution towards the worship area and finally, a big thank-you to Brian Aherne from ‘Around to It’.

We are very excited about the next phase of our outdoor learning project and are making fantastic progress to establish a decorated traversing wall and a space for the children to create bigger art projects.

Everyone knows, and has probably used, Microsoft(TM) Office but there are a number of open source (and therefore free) versions which do the job just as well and can work with Office file types.

Open Office The granddaddy of them all, Open Office is backed by the Apache Software Foundation who support a number of open source products. It has been 20 years in development and they recently announced their 50 millionth download so there are a LOT of people using it.

Open Office will look and feel familiar to anyone who has used the Microsoft(TM) Office applications. It comprises six applications in one package.

Big Smiles on Samaritans faces There were smiles at Portsmouth Samaritans today when they became £7,500 better off thanks to the generosity of Councillor Gerald Shimbart, outgoing Mayor of Havant.

He made Samaritans one of his three charities for his Mayor’s Appeal and raised money last year when in office.

He visited Samaritans in London Road to present the cheque to the Director, Mary Noble.

To put this in perspective, it will keep the lines open for 3 whole months for local people going through a crisis or just needing to talk.

Samaritans in Portsmouth talks to around 38,000 callers per month, who may be distressed, despairing or suicidal and wanting an independent listening ear.
