A LOT gOIng On In WATERLOOVILLE What an exciting December in Waterlooville! The sun shone on the day of the Christmas Event and it was very well attended. The music on the stage kept people entertained. So many good acts.

Archie the vocalist who serenaded the crowd. Igloo music, Ready to Rock School, Classique dance, the Wessex Cancer 'Sing for Life' choir, the fun FIt'n'Funky and not to forget The Jukebox band from Cowplain school. All amazing musicians and all local talent.

The lantern parade with the children holding their lanterns which they had made at the free workshops in the weeks before the day, arrived by the Christmas tree led by the Horndean Marching band and then it was the countdown to the switch on led by Father Christmas and the Mayor of Havant, Councillor Peter Wade . The star shown bright across the town with all the trees in the town twinkling with fairy lights.

For the fifth year running Santa's grotto was held in the library. Volunteers spent a week building and decorating ready for Santa's arrival. An amazing winter wonderland greeted him along with a warm fire and Christmas tree in his house. He and his elves delighted in welcoming the local children to enjoy the experience.

Then the amazing news that through the efforts of the community voting for the Events Team in the Aviva Challenge they had been awarded £1,000 to pay for free children's activities at the Summer fête next August. Well done ,and thank you Waterlooville.

But onto 2019 and breaking news. Did you know that Waterlooville is to have its own local radio station 'The Flash'? (http://theflashonair.co.uk/) It has been awarded a licence and will go live on FM in April. But if you want to find out more you can listen on the internet or digital radio now. Waterlooville events team are working with Flash to bring music into the town so the bandstand will be running monthly from January with Flash taking the opportunity to bring new local talent into

the town to entertain. Watch for more information.

February 5th is the community/business meeting in the Baptist Church, London Road at 7pm. The Deputy leader of Havant borough council will be there to talk about developments in the town. Put in your diaries NOW. 2019 is bringing a programme of entertainment. Remember the car boot starts in April; the monthly cinema (fourth Thursday of the month) continues in St Georges hall; the pancake race on 5 march. Is your business taking part? Come and watch the fun. may 19th sees the Party in the Precinct with fun and games and entertainment. And of course there will be the School Art Trail,Waterlooville in Bloom and the summer fête. Report on my work locally and in Westminster I was delighted to recently attend the excellent Purbrook and Widley Area Residents Association (PAWARA) Information Fayre.

Along with local councillors from the Purbrook and Stakes area, we were able to discuss with residents a range of local and national issues.

There were a wide range of organisations and community groups at the event, and it was excellent to see such a strong turnout.

Well done to Cllr Gary Hughes and his team from PAWARA for all of their hard work putting it together.

In Westminster, last month I invited Crookhorn College teacher Vicci Masson to Parliament as part of the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the Qualification of Women Act. This landmark act, allowed women to stand for Parliament for the first time - a watershed moment in our

Catherington WI Christmas boxes The photo was taken after the mammoth task of four months work of collecting shoe boxes and the items to fill each box . These consisted of the basics like toothpaste,soap and flannels, woollen hats and scarves .Then the fun items of sweets, toys, colouring pencils and crayons . This plus extra items went in to fill each box up to the lid. The Catherington WI members pulled together to cover, collect and fill each of the 113 boxes which was the final total.

Sally; one of the members, and her husband collected the various items and organised a room in their home to display and separate the items into those suitable for boys and girls making it easier to fill the correct boxes according to age and sex of the child that would receive a box.

I welcomed Vicci to Parliament as part of the ‘Ask Her To Stand’ initiative, inviting a constituent to Westminster for the day to see what it’s like to be an MP. The event, saw more than 250 inspiring women from all parts of the country descend on Westminster to highlight the need for more women in politics. They were invited to take part in workshops, listen to talks, watch Prime Minister’s Questions and to get a full picture of what it means to stand for political office.

While not all of these women will go onto a career in Westminster, it’s also important to ensure that we inspire women to stand at all levels of Government – including in local politics.

hyden WI goodwood Tea Twenty-four members and partners recently spent a lovely day at Goodwood House. We began with an interesting and informative talk and tour of the house which was quite splendid, made even better by the lovely warm and sunny late autumn day. This was followed by a delicious afternoon tea in beautiful surroundings.

All in all it was time well spent with a very satisfactory outcome.

The boxes will be off to their destination of Moldova in November and we all hope that the children will get as much pleasure as we had getting them prepared to make their Christmas special.

InJURED In An ACCIDEnT AT WORK? UNSURE WHAT TO DO NEXT? Construction sites and building sites, in particular, are hazardous and dangerous places and the risk of a serious accident occurring is high. Workers are often concentrating on their own area of work and in a noisy and hectic environment, serious accidents do happen. Statistics from the Health & Safety Executive show that in 2016/17, there were around thirty fatalities and around 64,000 non-fatal injuries.

Your employers have a legal responsibility to put procedures into place so that your workplace is safe. If they fail to do so and you suffer an injury as a result, you may be able to make a claim for your injuries together with any financial losses incurred.

It is fair to say that many people do not actually want to bring a claim against their employer but in some circumstances, the consequences may have a significant impact not only in terms of the injury itself but also on future earning capacity for the injured person and their family.

If you, a loved one or a friend have been involved in an accident at work, the following guidance may be of assistance to you.

What should I do if I have had an

accident at work?

Make sure the details of the accident circumstances is accurately reported in the Accident Book and that you read it through carefully before signing it. This should be done as soon as possible after the accident.

Write a clear description of exactly what happened whilst it is fresh in your mind. It is easy to forget details over time.

Make sure your Health & Safety representative knows about the accident and that photographs of the scene are taken.

Keep a note of any witnesses who saw what happened.

Can I be sacked for making a claim?

Not surprisingly, this is one of the most common questions asked and the answer is “No”. There are understandable concerns about the risk of losing your job but in many circumstances, if you are sacked, you may have a separate claim for unfair dismissal.

Your employer is legally required to have insurance in place to cover accidents and the claim will be dealt with by their insurers.

How much compensation could I receive?

This varies from case to case and will depend upon the severity of your injuries.

In addition, you may recover financial losses including past losses – eg loss of earnings, care, medical treatment; and future losses. Postcode Publications has teamed up with the Havant Rotary Club to launch an exciting new competition aimed at Young Photographers.

There are a few rules to follow so that all entrants can be judged fairly! Quite simply all you have to produce is a portfolio of three photographs based upon the theme “Beauty of Nature” in colour or black and white. Each print, including any mount, should be no larger than A4 size and Mobile Phones may be used.

There is some time to think about entering the competition as the closing date is: 28 February 2019

But the sooner entries are received the better.

There’s always some small print required when photographs are printed and published so it is important that you complete the application form which must accompany your portfolio.

The author has personally visited all of the sites and this really comes through in his enthusiastic writing. (first published in 2013) SERIOUS READS AbOUT bEER 20th Century Pub by Boak R & Bailey J. Homewood Press - £16.99 - This is a social history of the pub which starts by offering a definition of a pub as a “third” place which is neither home nor the workplace. The book is well researched and provides very enjoyable read for anyone with an interest in how pubs have developed.

Think Beer, Drink Beer by John Holl.

Basic Books (USA) - £18.99 - John is one of America’s leading beer writers and was editor of All About Beer magazine for some years. This book is a series of long essays about the growth of craft beer in the USA, the importance of really appreciating beer, and the need for diversity in beer. Although written for an American audience, British beer lovers could learn much from John’s wise words.

Craft beer and global travel are both very popular activities for younger people and this well illustrated book will provide much inspiration.

CAMRA’S Good Beer Guide Belgium (8th ed.) by Joe Strange & Tim Webb. CAMRA - £14.99 - This book has brief chapters on the history of Belgium, travelling to Belgium, Belgian food, how beer is made and Belgian beer styles. There are listings over two hundred and forty Belgian breweries, their history and ratings for their beers. There is

also a comprehensive round-up of all the main beer cafés in Belgium by province and town.

Belgian Beer Trails by Erik Verdonck Lannoo (Belgium) - £25.27 If you are planning a beer holiday to Belgium how can you maximize the time you spend there in sampling the local brews? A good starting point is Belgian Beer Trails which divides the country up into nine areas and lists the breweries in each location together with tourist information about the area. The book is beautifully illustrated and contains full contact details for 195 breweries and 12 beer museums. There are also suggestions for nearby cafés and bars where local beers can be sampled.

Will Travel for Beer by Stephen Beaumont. Octopus £14.99 - This profusely illustrated book is based on the author’s twenty-seven years of global beer writing in which he takes us on a trip around the world focusing on beer festivals, bars and breweries rather than specific beers. The book may provide inspiration for those who are planning a gap year and want to fit in some craft beer destinations as well as the usual tourist attractions.

Atlas of Beer by Hoalst – Pullen N & Patterson MW. National Geographic - £25 - If you like reading the National Geographic magazine, then this atlas of beer may be of interest.

The book is full of diagrams, facts and figures, maps and beautiful colour photos. The authors visited four hundred breweries in twenty-eight countries in order to produce this striking study of world beers.

World’s Best Beers by McFarland B & Sandham T. Jacqui Small - £25 - The authors regularly tour the UK with their Thinking Drinkers show. The format of the book is to have brief reviews of beers from as many different craft breweries as is possible. There are longer articles about key breweries. The main countries covered

include: UK, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic and the USA. STYLE gUIDES 1001 Beers You Must Try Before You Die

by Adrian Tierney-Jones. Cassell. £20 - The beers are divided into sections: Amber, Blonde, White, Dark and Speciality with each beer getting a write-up on its history and background. It is a global selection of beers with not all being available in the UK. The book is well illustrated. Personally I would have preferred the book to have been organised by style rather colour of beer - (revised ed.

First published 2010 and 2013) Craft Beer Dictionary by Richard Croasdale. Octopus £15 - This book contains comprehensive definitions of around two hundred and thirty terms that are commonly found in the world of beer. There are also one hundred full page arty beer-themed illustrations. The book absolutely up-to-date and includes NEIPA (New England or NorthEast IPA) an unfiltered, hazy, fruity, aromatic style of IPA which was only recognized as a distinct style in mid-2017.

Craft Beer by Dominic Roskrow. Collins £6.99 - This is a pocket sized book with illustrated reviews of one hundred and twenty different craft beers. The beers are listed in alphabetical order rather than by style or country which is the format adopted by most other writers. Dominic’s selection is quite heavily weighted in favour of British beers with over half the entries coming from the UK. Pocket Guide to Beer by Joe Dick & Nikki Welch. Birlinn - £7.99 - This is another slim, pocket guide to help one understand the myriad of styles which comprise the world of craft beer.

What makes this book somewhat different is that it groups beers onto a tube map style graphic.

The idea is that the different beer styles are like stations on the underground and each line takes one on a journey of discovery through the various categories of beer found within a style group.

The Dramatic Art of the London Underground

On Saturday morning, 16th November, a full audience attended an illustrated and informative Day School organised by Havant WEA (Workers' Education Association) and presented by Mike Grundy at the Spring, Havant, on the subject: “The Dramatic Art of the London Underground.” Many members of the audience were not previously aware of the extent of the artwork because, as Mike explained, “Nobody ever sees the Art - it is always behind the traveller.”

The audience was taken on a pictorial journey through the London Underground – stopping at every station. The association

between art and the underground began in 1908 when its then publicity officer, Frank Pick, commissioned leading artists to work on poster campaigns. Most of the present artwork was commissioned in 2000. As there are 270 stations altogether it is not feasible to describe all the images presented but the following are some of the highlights: As the artwork reflects the locality, at Baker Street there are images of Sherlock Holmes, at Trafalgar Square, near the National Gallery, are paintings dedicated to the Renaissance period. On the Northern Line at the Oval are humorous murals, statues and banners of cricketers. There are

Art Deco images at Leicester Square but in contrast East Finchley is in modern style. Oxford Circus has a colourful mural of Snakes and ladders: the diversity and detail of the images is astounding. Not only are there paintings, there are statues, and even abstract mosaics by Eduardo Paolozzi at Tottenham Court Road. - pictured above with Mike Grundy.

Throughout the Day School there were opportunities for the audience to express

their views and interpretation of the illustrations with a quiz at the end, matching specific artwork to stations. Many people had been enthused to seek out for themselves the Dramatics Art on the London Underground.

havant Town mill Corn had been grown and milled into flour in the Havant area for hundreds of years. The Domesday Book recorded that Havant had two mills and over time there

must have been many more.

The Havant Town Mill was still in operation until the early 1900s. A new booklet; A History of the Mills at Havant, Langstone and Brockhampton researched by Jennifer Bishop is the subject of the latest History of the Borough of Havant booklet which is on sale at the Havant museum in East Street.There is also a booklet on the mills of Bedhampton, Hayling Island and Emsworth. Waitrose support havant Stroke Club

Waitrose in Havant are great supporters of community groups and events, and Havant Stroke Club was lucky enough to receive £520 from their green token community fund.

The club are based at Bedhampton Community Centre and meet every week on a Monday between 10am and 12pm. They currently have space for new members, and do a variety of activities, from guest speakers to quizzes to sing-a-longs, and even have a gentle exercise session for those who would like it. There’s always a welcoming face, hot drink and biscuit, and a chat for those

who want it.

The Club have kept the costs low at £2 per session to ensure that it is accessible for everybody, but this means they don’t always have the funds to treat their members.

That’s why the Waitrose donation has come at just the right time, as they are now using the money to take their members out for a Christmas three course meal, with panto entertainment afterwards.

Taxes for Small business Owners

The Office of Tax Simplification is seeking the views of small business owners about the impact of tax on their business and which parts of the tax system are particularly complex and hard to get right.

While we await their findings (due to be published in Spring 2019), here is a brief summary of the five main taxes for small businesses: Income tax As a sole trader you will start to pay income tax on your business’s profit once it goes over the personal allowance threshold of £11,850 (for 2018/19 tax year).

This is assuming you have no other income, such as a salary from a job or rental income, to allow for.

If your business is a limited company, you could pay income tax on any salary or dividends you take from the company. If, and how much you pay, depends on the amount you take out. national Insurance Although not strictly a tax, National Insurance (NI) is money paid to the government and is therefore often referred to as a form of tax.

As a sole trader you will pay a flat weekly rate of £2.95 Class 2 NI unless your business’s profits are under the small profits threshold of £6,205. If under, you can still pay Class 2 NI voluntarily to protect your entitlement to State Pension and other benefits. If your profits are above £8,424 you will also pay Class 4

If your business is a limited company and you receive a weekly sum of £162.01 or more, you will be required to pay Class 1 employee’s NI from your wages.

Your company will also have to pay employer Class 1 NI unless it is covered by the employment allowance.

Corporation tax There is no equivalent of the personal allowance for limited companies so corporation tax is payable at 19% as soon as the company makes a profit. However, if it has previous losses these can be carried forward to a later accounting period.

VAT Businesses that make VATable sales of over the current VAT threshold of £85,000 have to register for VAT and make quarterly VAT returns. VATable sales are sales of goods or services that would have had VAT charged on them if made by a VAT -registered business. The standard rate of VAT is 20% for most goods and services, however a 5% reduced rate and 0% zero rate apply in some cases. business rates If you run your business from an office or retail premises you may be liable for business rates. When using your home you should not have to pay business rates unless, for example, you employ staff who work from your home or you have adapted your home in order to work there.

Three easy 'swaps' to reduce the amount of everyday single-use plastic 2. Plastic cotton bud sticks. We find thousands of these on our regular beach cleans, and it's easy to buy paper sticks instead.

Lissie Pollard from the Final Straw Solent initiative says that as well cutting out the use of single use plastic bags, bottles, straws and coffee cups. Here are three 'swaps' that we can make to help: 1. Toothbrushes - switch to bamboo ones, they have a biodegradable bamboo handle and many will have BRA-free nylon bristles. They clean teeth just as well as a standard plastic toothbrush but are far better for the environment.

3. Plastic cutlery. Why not get your own travel set to take with you so you don't need to throw plastic knives, forks or spoons in the rubbish bin?

‘A Frame’ litter pick stations Final Straw Solent have teamed up with a number of local businesses to provide litter picking equipment and bags for people to help keep the area clean.

"The A-frame '#2minutebeachclean' boards have litter-pickers that people can borrow and litter collection bags if they wish to help clean up the surrounding area' Bianca Carr from Final Straw Solent says: "The idea is that people take one of the litter-pickers and spend a few minutes filling a bag from litter on the beach. They can then empty the bag into the nearest waste bin, return the picker for someone else to use, and pop the used bag into the station's used bag bin."

“There are currently eight stations located at sites around the area, sponsored by local businesses who take responsibility for putting them out each

morning, ensuring they have enough bags throughout the day, and taking them in when they close for the day.”

The University of the Third age is a UK movement of people in their Third Age, which is defined, not by a particular age in number of years, but by the period in life following full time employment.

They come together to continue their educational, creative, and social interests in a friendly and informal way, and to explore new interests.

There are several local groups each with its own set of interests, and several of them have cycling groups.

Judith Worley of Havant U3A writes: ‘ We are a small group never more than nine cyclists on our monthly rides which have taken us on many delightful routes.

The Isle of Wight is a favourite every summer with its friendly cycleways. Round Portsmouth Island, round Hayling and round Langstone Harbour are regular favourites and sometimes we put our bikes on the train and venture further afield from Chichester, Petersfield or Worthing.

Hayling Island U3A cycling group arranges social rides on the first Tuesday of each month at 10-o-clock. Any member can join their rides which are relatively short two to three hours - . The rides are not fast and, in any case, go at the pace of the slowest rider, using quiet lanes where possible, but cannot avoid roads altogether.

Emsworth U3A rides are up to 10 miles, sometimes less Rides are on the 1st & 3rd Thursday of each month starting from Emsworth Park (car park), Horndean Road, at 09.30 prompt Emsworth U3A has an agreement with Havant U3A that they can each join each other's groups Ems Valley U3A 'Cycling for Pleasure' meets on the 3rd Monday of each month,

throughout the summer and into the winter months as far as is practical - weather permitting.

Start: 11am. Bridge Street Car Park ; Finish: Early-mid afternoon Outings vary from local country and coastal routes to more distant destinations via carmounted bike racks and group travel by train Rowlands Castle U3A social midweek cycle rides meet under the big tree opposite the stores on the 2nd & 4th Thursdays of the month on a ‘just turn up’ basis.

All RC U3A members or prospective members are welcome. Departure at 9.30 am. The ride on the 2nd Thursday is further or hillier than the one on the 4th Thursday.

The style of ride is intended to encourage those who have bikes in the garage and ‘always meant to get out’ to come for a ride, as well as more seasoned riders looking for a casual mid-week ride.

Longer and off road rides are possible, or a short break away, depending on interest.

Rides avoid main roads wherever possible, and use quiet lanes and tracks.

There is a back marker, and we re-group at turnings and junctions. No one is left behind, or forced to ride beyond their capabilities.

All Groups mention that they pause part way round the ride for tea or coffee stops.

Other U3A groups in our area include Portsdown (Cosham), Portsmouth, Waterlooville, and Horndean, none of whom have a cycling group at the moment.

However, Beryl Shepherd of Portsdown suggests that if your own U3A has no cycling group you could apply to join a neighbouring group or start a new cycling group in your own U3A.’

Havant Hockey Club has continued to enjoy the golden afterglow of the 2016 Rio Olympics with increased participation in all sections.

Thriving at all levels, the club has thirteen men’s and ladies’ senior teams, as well as nine junior age group-based teams that play every single week.

Hockey initiative which has been developed alongside England Hockey to either welcome players back to the game or for those who are simply trying it for the first time.

Havant Hockey Club Chairman Chris Pickett said: “I’ve been delighted by the success of the Back 2 Hockey initiative which has captured some of the excitement caused by our success in the Olympics and has resulted in new players playing the game for the first time. We are a social and inclusive club, so I encourage anyone who might have seen hockey at the Olympics or the recent World Cup in London and is thinking of playing for the first-time to get in contact. Training sessions are open to players of any age, skill or experience.”

Q We've had a wonderful Summer and Autumn has started with a few cold days, so I am wondering whether to put my bike away, or carry on all through the Winter.

A It is really your choice. If you feel happy and confident, carry on riding, but if you dread the cold and wet, then don't.

If you choose to lay your bike up for the Winter, then it is best to put it somewhere dry and sheltered from the weather. If you have a dry shed or garage, then that is fine, but if you have to leave it locked outside, then at least cover it with a tarpaulin if you can.

Oil or grease the bike chain and gears to stop them going rusty while your back is turned, and keep the tyres pumped up, even though you are not riding. Best to check the tyres once a month. If any tyre goes flat the rubber is folded in half which can promote cracks in the side wall, and eventually, failure.

If you are going to carry on riding through the winter there are a few things to think about.

The bike should be OK, but when you get back from a rainy or muddy ride it is sensible to give the bike a wipe down with an old towel or cloth of some kind to reduce the risk of rust. A quick squirt of furniture polish onto another cloth can then be wiped over the paintwork to help it shrug off moisture.

Most of the moving parts of the bike are sealed against the weather so you don't have to go round with an oil can every week, but after a wet ride it is a good idea to have a spray can of '3 in 1' or similar oil and spray the gears in the back wheel while you turn the pedals backwards. Two or three turns will expose all the links of the chain and all the cogs of the gears to the oil spray.

Mary, Mary quite contrary How does your bicycle go with pedals and bell, a helmet as well and the Peloton, all in a row If you can keep your bike under cover ( and I know that some of you can't) then it keeps it dry until next time.

After the bike you will need to think about yourself, and your clothing, but I don't like recommending any special items or makes. Specialist cycle clothing is designed to do a specific job, and it is nice to copy the top cyclists but for normal cycling, normal ideas on clothing are true.

You will need a good waterproof jacket, preferably one that is fairly long at the back, and several layers of tops to go underneath. Waterproof trousers are also available, but I find that they are bulky to cycle in and Lycra type pants can be better as they dry out very quickly.

Finally you need to think about your hands.Your hands sit out in front of you clutching what is basically a steel tube, so make sure that you have good gloves for the coldest weather. They don't have to be expensive, although the very best can cost a lot, but if you have some 'puffy' gloves they are made of several layers with the outers wind and waterproof and the other layers and the padding trapping air to keep you warm.

bell-Tower Louvres Renewal underway Thanks to a donation of £1,600 by Postcode Publications, renovation of the first of three bell-tower louvres is underway at St Faith’s Church, Havant. The completion of the louvres will be the final step in improving the appearance of Havant’s oldest continually-used public building – following the renovations of the clock faces, weather-vane and flag-pole in recent years (funded largely by supporters of Postcode Publications). This is part of St Faith’s ‘Big Build Campaign’, which along with the outside improvements, has also carried out extensive renovations to the inside of the building.

The louvres are a vital part of the ancient art of bell-ringing, which has been taking place at St Faith’s for at least 400 years. The louvres direct the sound of the bells downwards to the ground, enabling them to be heard clearly and accurately by all. They also protect the bell chamber itself from the ingress of birds.

Donations are urgently required to complete the North and South-facing louvres, to complete this landmark project.

U3A members are very similar and very different. If you perused a general meeting of our Havant branch you would see men and women of a certain age joining together with a common purpose to learn, either at individual interest groups or by a shared experience at general meetings. Some attend happily individually or with friends; others stay on the periphery without indication of their thoughts.

Coincidentally, over the last few weeks we have distributed leaflets with details of our organisation to various sites in the Havant area. This has included Community Halls, Churches of different denomination, Doctors Surgeries and Art Centres. Talking to people at these venues also highlighted issues of loneliness and isolation. It is therefore important for us that a balance is maintained between individuals enjoying independent living, learning and activities and those that need an encouraging hand.

Havant U3A has a welcome group that delights in greeting members old and new on arrival, helping those that would like some guidance particularly during their first few attendances.

Our groups continue to thrive and this month the Photography group is centre stage. They consistently produce beautiful images, regularly choosing a selection of photographs for our online Gallery and

some have been included in local publications. Included here is ‘Take Off from Rowlands Castle’, (pictured left) captured by U3A Committee member Geoff Worthington.

There are vacancies and new members will be very welcome.

Another group enjoying discussing these testing times is Current Affairs. The group has a good mix of members who have managed to cover a wide range of subjects as well as the ubiquitous ‘Brexit’. Last months meeting provided food for thought in respect of young people and their use of social media, now becoming a huge challenge for teachers, parents and grandparents.

Most of us know we cannot turn back from the sometimes frightening advance, but keeping us protected from potential pitfalls was well worth a debate.

Osteoarthritis (osteo- bone, arthr – joint, itis – inflammation) is a problem which affects the lining of your joints.

In a healthy joint the ends of each bone are covered in a smooth lining called cartilage.

This allows for easy gliding between the bones and pain free movement at the joint.

Osteoarthritis (OA) causes thinning and/or roughening of this cartilage and can result in pain, stiffness and swelling. The knee is the largest joint in the body and so is one of the most commonly affected by osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis can be diagnosed with an assessment from your physiotherapist or doctor and can be confirmed by an x-ray.

However, it is important to know that often damage seen on an x-ray doesn’t correlate with symptoms. Some people experience high levels of pain and disability with minimal joint damage and likewise others have severe joint damage and yet display very few symptoms.

There is a common misconception about osteoarthritis that, once the damage is done, there is nothing you can do. Whilst you can’t repair the damaged cartilage, you can reduce your symptoms, improve your ability to use your knee, and minimise future damage. As a last resort, some people do require surgery, but there are lots of conservative options you can try before that.

What are the symptoms of OA Knee?

At Physio-logical we see and treat a lot of osteoarthritis and have put together some advice for management. We hope that by following our advice, it might improve your symptoms and quality of life.

• Pace your activities – avoid the ‘boom and bust’ cycle. This is when you have a good day and decide to get everything done whilst you can. This then leads to a flare up of your symptoms the following day and you are unable to do anything because of the pain.You wait until the pain subsides and then the cycle continues again. It is better to do little and often.

• Exercise – keeping the muscles that support your knee joint strong and supple can make a really big difference to the symptoms of osteoarthritis but remember ‘pacing’ applies to your exercises too.

• Weight management – decreasing the amount of load going through your joints makes a big difference to the amount of strain the joint takes, particularly in load bearing joints such as knees. Evidence shows that being obese can increase your risk of osteoarthritis by a factor of 3, and even a 5kg weight loss can reduce your risk by 50%.

• Orthotics – foot position can play a part in the strain going through your knee joints in some people. Sometimes a simple off the shelf foot orthotic that helps support your arch with comfortable, supportive footwear can make a big difference to your knee pain.

• Remain physically active – aim for 150 minutes of exercise over a week, walking, running, cycling, swimming, whatever makes your heart beat a bit harder.

Physical activity guidelines can be found at the Arthritis Research UK website, but be conscious of pacing yourself!

Treatment There are lots of different treatment options from exercises, taping, to sports massage to release off tight muscles, knee joint mobilisations, stretches and acupuncture.

Eco-Friendly healthcare The definition of eco-friendly is “Not harmful to the environment”.

Increasingly, the impact of ecologically harmful human activities to the environment is being brought to our attention. For example, who now is not aware of the problems associated with the use of plastics?

Probably, most of us would like to do our bit to help to reduce pollution. Now, please consider this. When you take any medication, either prescribed or over the counter, have you ever given a thought to where it may eventually end up?

After drugs have passed through your body, they are excreted in your urine and faeces. This means they go down the toilet and into the drains. Then where do they go?

Environmental testing has revealed the presence of diabetes drugs, antibiotics, the contraceptive pill, anti inflammatories, pain killers and antidepressants in rivers, lakes, soil, manure and even drinking water. Drugs and their metabolites have been detected in fish and other creatures, thus entering the food chain. A 2014 report by UK Water Industry Research found that in most of the 160 sewage treatment works studied, several common drugs were present in the final effluent in concentrations high enough to potentially affect ecosystems. The full impact of drug contamination on plant, animal and human health is not yet known, but as the number of prescriptions goes up

year on year, the situation is likely to get worse.

What can be done? Improving the removal of impurities at the waste water treatment works would be a massive, costly task and unlikely to solve the problem. This would also be another case of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted. Would it not be preferable for fewer drugs to be used in the first place, thereby reducing the risk of contamination?

The largest group of over the counter medicine usage is painkillers. It accounted for 23.2% of sales in 2015. Science has already proved that prolonged use of such medication can be harmful to the body, and we are now suspecting it may be harmful to the environment too.

Chiropractor Sheila Stakim of Emsworth Chiropractic Clinic has been in practice for 23 years. During that time she has treated over 6,000 people. The vast majority of these people initially consulted her for help because they were in pain. The most common complaints are neck and back pain, as well as sciatica, headaches, shoulder, hip and knee pain.

Before they saw Sheila, many had been taking painkillers and/or anti inflammatories, either prescribed or over the counter, for their symptoms.

Chiropractic care uses no drugs. The aim is to diagnose and treat, whenever possible, the cause of the pain, not just mask the symptoms with medication.

Sheila says that most of the people she has treated reported that they were able to reduce markedly or even cease completely their use of painkillers, as well as a variety of medications for associated complaints. This is surely a positive step towards Eco-Friendly Healthcare.

Emsworth resident, Simon (pictured), had been taking painkillers and antiinflammatories for years for sciatica and back pain caused by a lumbar disc injury. Chiropractic care helped him tremendously.

Spinnaker Chorus bring home LAbbS bronze medal

The Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers 2018 (LABBS) Convention took place in Harrogate in October. Twenty five choruses from across the UK took to the Convention Centre stage on Saturday. Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Chorus, contestant number eleven, performed at 13:39 singing a fabulous two song set. Firstly, a lively, fun up-tempo tune, I Love Being Here With You, written by Peggy Lee and William Schluger, (Arr.by Aaron Dale) followed by a passionate, emotional rendition

of What Kind Of Fool Am I, written by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse (Arr.

by David Harrington).

Our time on stage flew incredibly fast and we were buzzing after our performance. Then following an anxious wait for the panel of nine professional Barbershop judges to make their final decision, Spinnaker Chorus were delighted to be announced as the LABBS 2018 Bronze Medal Winners especially as this was our competing debut with LABBS.

Queen Alexandra hospital respiratory choir’s ‘flu song’ encourages staff to get vaccinated

We went to convention as first timers with no expectations but just wanting to give our best possible performance, and show our support to the many other choruses attending. The competition standard, both visually and vocally was extremely high which made our bronze medal placing such a pleasing and surprising achievement. Our success was extra special because we had eight new Spinnaker members singing with us in their first competition at this event.

The respiratory choir at Queen Alexandra Hospital have created and recorded a “flu song” to encourage colleagues and patients to get their flu jabs and help prevent the spread of influenza.

The respiratory choir is made up of colleagues from respiratory wards around Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust. The song and our video are really about canvassing members of the public about the importance of getting their flu jabs and making sure the Trust’s staff are aware of how important getting their flu jab is, not only for their health, but for the health of our patients.”

John Knighton, Medical Director at PHT, said: “Thank you to all of our staff who have had their flu vaccinations. This year NHS staff are being offered the quadrivalent vaccine which has been identified

by Public Health England as most effective for people aged under 65 covering Flu A (H3N2), H1N1 and two strains of Flu B. Don’t stop Wining Post Christmas bargain Wines

We all know that December can be an expensive month. The money we spend on the high street buying gifts for our friends and family seems to increase year after year. Not to mention the amount spent on extra food, goodies we would not normally eat during the rest of the year.

The same can be said for wine and other bottled delights. How much Baileys do we drink at Christmas compared with other months? Sherry sales also increase as Grandmas’ around the country enjoy a few extra glasses. We also spend that little bit more on wine as we treat ourselves to something special for the festive lunch.

Christmas is a time for treating ourselves and others, and why not? We work hard the whole year, so we deserve it.

But then January arrives. The holidays and festivities disappear, and the office and hard work arrive once more. It’s this time when we must tighten our belts a little and revert to our normal eating and drinking habits. But that does not mean we have to drink cheaper wines which are of lesser quality.

‘What makes a bargain wine a bargain?’

It’s a question I often get asked along with ‘is a wine that cost £50 significantly better than a wine that cost £5?’ The answer I usually give is if you prefer the £5 bottle better than the £50 bottle then no it’s not.

Wine is all about personal preference. It’s good to go for different styles and explore different wines but we generally know what styles we like. Remember one thing, if you like the wine then it’s a good one.

The other way to look at saving is drink less but better. This is a good way of cutting back on the wine consumption after the Christmas festivities as well as saving a few pennies and you can also adopt this philosophy all year round. Better quality wines will last much longer once you have opened them.

As long as you keep the top tightly sealed and whites in the fridge then it will last much longer than a cheaper wine. If you only want one or two glasses every few days, then there is no danger of your wine going off quickly.

Here are few wines to enjoy in January without breaking the bank.

Heritage White, South East France £7.99 - Crisp and fresh with a lively zingy character and a fruity finish.

Stansted Shin of beef Stew This is a simple, satisfying and delicious dish that can be added to depending on what ingredients you have available. The trick is to make sure you know which cut of beef to use. I would ask the butcher for beef shin to create a stew that is rich, melt in the mouth and bursting with flavour. It cannot be beaten – especially at this time of year when the cold and the damp starts to get in the bones.

I always avoid pre-packed “stewing beef” as you have no idea which joint it has come from. Usually it is a mix of off cuts so that some will cook quicker than other bits. Shin is particularly tough and you cannot cook it quickly. It requires hours of gentle cooking to turn the meat into rich, full flavoured tenderness. It is worth the wait.

You can add diced carrot, celery, parsnip or mushrooms, depending on what you have in stock. I also like to add a bit of heat with a chilli or hot sauce. Whole cloves of garlic and strips of orange rind is another winner, depending on your preference.

method The basic recipe is to dust the diced shin in the flour and mustard, brown in the a heavy bottomed pot in small batches over a high heat and remove. Add the chopped vegetables to brown then return the meat to the pot, cover with a decent stock and/or wine or stout, along with your herbs (bay leaf, peppercorns, rosemary or thyme).

Bring to the boil before placing in a low oven (160°C) to cook for at least 3 hours, until the meat is tender.

Havant Academy Updates December 2018 This academic year the students of Havant Academy made it clear that they wanted to help raise money for charities throughout the year. So far this year we have had two very successful days.

The first of these was the 10th October, when the Academy took part in #HelloYellow and raised a total of £176.00. #HelloYellow, Young Minds, help to raise awareness of youth mental health which took part on the World Mental Health Day.

On the 14th November the Academy took part in the first House event fundraiser day. Challenger were the first house to take part, the students from Challenger chose the Charity, Over The Wall. This charity help to provide summer camps for children and their families who are coping with serious illness and conditions. In total they raised a fantastic £324.37 In 2019 we have another three houses planning their charity days, as well as other national and world wide fundraising and awareness days that we are planning to take part in. As an Academy we feel its very important for us to give back the community and charities that help our students and their families.

Finally, all of the staff and students would like to wish the local community a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We look forward to seeing you all in 2019!

Pfizer, a large company based in Havant, have been volunteering their time for the local community in conjunction with Community First for five years. Their commitment to community projects has helped many organisations, by taking time out of their working day to help in any way they can.

November saw a group of six volunteers return to help one of their favourite projects, sorting at the Rowans Hospice sorting depot in Farlington. Rowans Hospice provides the highest quality specialist care, guiding and supporting patients and those closest to them through the journey of their illness at every step of the way. The Rowans have two warehouses where they organise and sort charity donations to be delivered to their twenty-two charity shops around Hampshire.

Pfizer spent a morning at the Farlington warehouse where they split into two teams. One sorted through hundreds of bags of donated clothes making sure they were in the right places ready to be delivered to the shops. The other team sorted through many piles of games, books, and

general bric a brac.

Scania a volunteer from Pfizer said “I really enjoy being part of the Pfizer volunteer scheme. This is my chance to give something back to the Rowans for all the help they have given to us, all of the team here today have been touched by the Rowans in some way with the help they have given our friends and family in the past”. The team from Pfizer were in awe of the dedication of the regular volunteers that give their time on a regular basis and wanted to thank them for making the group feel so welcome.

Vanessa Gilding, Health and Safety Manager at the Rowans said “Thank you to the Pfizer team for their support and hard work today. We rely on the support of all of our volunteers to help turn donated goods into saleable items which helps fund the work at Rowans Hospice.”

bOSmERE SChOOL VISIT bEACOn ChURCh On Tuesday 4th December 2018 a Year 4 class from Bosmere Junior School visited the Beacon Church to sing to the parishioners who were enjoying a get together Christmas lunch. 4FW sang a selection of their Nativity songs and really entertained the diners. The 30 children then went to give their hand-made Christmas cards

to different individuals and enjoyed spending some time with them discussing their hobbies and school.

Daniel (aged 9) remarked to his teacher Mrs Fisk, “I was really surprised because they really were interested in what we liked doing.” Miley (aged 9) was engaged at great length describing how she made her card, sprinkling the recipient in

glitter – to much amusement of the table! Anna (also aged 9) was really moved by how much the card and some fun singing meant to this group of people. This is the third year Sonia from the Beacon Church has co-ordinated this fun afternoon with Bosmere Junior School and it is a tradition we hope to continue.

Children and Young People Now Awards 2018 We are proud to announce that Park Community School was the winner of the Family Support Award at the Children and Young People Now awards 2018, for our MUNCH community food project.

MUNCH addresses the problem of holiday hunger and offers free meals during the school holidays, Thursday tea times and Sunday lunches. We are delighted to receive this national award, which we hope will enable us to continue providing help to our local community. In the judge’s opinion we have done the most to support whole families to help their children to lead healthy, happy and fulfilling lives safe from harm.

Poppy Wave As part of our Remembrance commemorations this year Park Community School, with tremendous help from the local community, created a knitted poppy wave to honour those who have lost their lives through war. Our display was made available for the public to view from 4:00pm daily, and we held a tea party to thank those members of the community who contributed.

We were delighted to showcase our poppy wave and other elements of our display at the Havant Borough Council Armed Forces event on 19 November. Following this year’s success, we would encourage all our fantastic knitters to keep knitting through the cold winter months. Please drop any knitted or crocheted poppies into the school. Thank you for your support.

YES Programme’ Project Park Community School has been very fortunate to receive the support of Postcode Publications to enable us us to heavily subsidise an initiative named the ‘YES Programme’ for students and staff members, who are donating their time to make it possible.

Mr Roberson, Assistant Headteacher, heads up the YES programme, as he is passionate about broadening the horizons of our young people and creating a mindset that ‘the more we see, the more we can aspire to be’.

Mr Roberson and students from years 7, 8, 10 and 11 have already been to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Future trips are planned to the Peter Ashley Activity Centre, Southampton Sports Centre and Portsmouth Equestrian Centre to name but a few.

hayling Island Camera Club Hayling Island Camera Club have been delighted to welcome a large number of new members this season. Many are beginners who have welcomed the special skill workshops put on to enable them to compete in the internal club competitions but others are already experienced photographers. What is interesting to note is the fact that nearly half of the new members do not actually live on the island.

Two rounds of the internal Print Competition have been held and one round of the internal Projected Digital Image Competition. The overall winners of these three competitions were: 1st Round Print Competition: John Watkins (Advanced Section) with “Sunflower”. John says this image was taken at the top of Butser one evening when there was a lovely sunset. Seeing this dandelion nearby, he couldn’t resist taking its image against such a sky!

2nd Round Print Competition: Carol Johnstone (Advanced Section) with “Going Home – Vintage”. Carol says she was

attached as a sample of the work shown:“Let’s Watch the Sun go Down!” – Michelle Curtis (Beginner Section, Round 1 Projected Digital Image). Taken in Fuerteventura, Spain, Michelle says she didn’t know the couple and it was just one of those moments which make a great picture.

Windmill Players Pantomime

AirACES monday 28th January - 1845 for 1930 hrs - ‘The British Space Race’ presented by Mr John Chinner who is a Lead Avionics Engineer, at Airbus Defence & Space. His knowledge of the British Aerospace Industry is second to none.

Less than six months after the end of WW2 in Europe, the British performed the earliest post-war tests of captured V-2 rockets in ‘Operation Backfire’.

John will be explaining about the satellites, launch vehicles and other projects monday 25th February - 1845 for 1930 hrs - ‘Operation Mali and other stories from RAF Odiham’ presented by Sqn Ldr Matt Holloway who will outline the reasons why ‘Operation Mali’ was so important to the UK, by reducing terrorism threats.

It supported French counter-terrorism operations in this West African country. The Chinook deployment demonstrated the UK’s commitment to help the Sahel region by providing life saving humanitarian support, which in turn created a bigger diplomatic network. Previously extremists were using ungoverned space in the Sahel to plan and launch attacks on Europe. In addition the operation helped to counter the illegal trade in people, drugs and weapons.

There will also be more stories about 18 & 27 (Chinook) Squadrons, operating from RAF Odiham. This talk will include a number of videos showing the operation in Mali.

Denmead Luncheon Club needs Volunteers The long running Denmead Luncheon Club are desperate for volunteers. It's all run on a volunteer basis and they need cooks and volunteers to serve the food and chat to the elderly that attend.

Due to poor health we are losing a whole team in the new year and we are already on skeleton staff.

The people who come to these lunches are some of the most elderly and vulnerable residents of Denmead, some of them have lived here their whole lives and they can all tell you amazing stories. It is not just for the warm cooked meal that they come to us, for most of the diners it’s the only meal they do not eat alone. It is the chance to have conversations, make new friends and catch up with old ones.

So it’s the New Year and you’ve decided to do something that you’ve always wanted to do: learn an instrument.

But over the years you’ve looked at the guitar: how hard is it? Some people make playing one look so easy, but is it?

What type do I buy, what is an acoustic or a classical guitar. Will it be far easier to lean on an electric solid body guitar, playing through an amplifier. If so, what type of amplifier will I need? In today’s Internet age there is stacks of information available if you have the time to spend looking, but your local music shop is probably your best bet to point you in the right direction.

Most shops will have a list of teachers for most instruments, but this will be a further outlay for you.

YouTube has become a popular format for learning and of course it’s cheaper, but sadly you can pick up bad habits! So another

place to look into while you do your homework.

So if it’s a guitar, ukulele, saxophone, harmonica, or just the simple recorder or penny whistle there’s no reason in this day and age - compared to forty or fifty years ago - not to have a go, there is far more information and help available now, plus the quality of the instruments is generally far better!

So do your homework, give the instrument practice time, keep at it, be positive, enjoy it, eventually it will all fall into place - but that’s down to you! The other factor to take into account is opinions which abound about makes, the playing action of guitars, type of plectrums, strings to use etc.

The more you get into this the more you will learn what suits you. Like most things in life you have to start somewhere and the beginning is the best every time!

New Year parties are starting! One important factor for both men and women is that their hair looks good, especially when getting the glad rags on for a special occasion! Whether that is shiny long locks, or short back and sides, its all about what’s important to the individual person. So many people I see have thinning hair, and this can really effect a persons confidence. There are lots of factors that can contribute to this, stress being the most common, or thyroid disease, alopecia areata (an autoimmune disease that attacks hair follicles). Scalp infections such a ringworm, and even severe dry scalp can have an effect on the hair growth and condition. So always make sure you are eating as clean as possible and getting as many natural vitamins and minerals in your body as you can in the form of fresh fruits and vegetables and lots of super foods. Increasing your protein intake is also helpful. However there are some topical things you can use to help stimulate and strengthen hair growth naturally, and as always, the sooner you use when you first start noticing hair thinning, the better…

2. Rosemary oil: If you want to improve both hair thickness and hair growth, rosemary oil is a great choice thanks to its ability to improve cellular generation.

3. Cedarwood essential oil: Cedarwood essential oil is thought to promote hair growth and reduce hair loss by balancing the oilproducing glands in the scalp. It also has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties, which can treat different conditions that may contribute to dandruff or hair loss. Included in a mixture with lavender and rosemary, cedarwood extract was also found to reduce hair loss in those with alopecia areata.

How to use: Mix a few drops of cedarwood essential oil with 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil of your choice.

Massage it into your scalp and leave it on for ten minutes before washing it out.

4.Ylang-ylang oil: While those with oily hair and skin would want to skip this one, ylang-ylang oil is ideal for those with dry scalps, as it can stimulate sebum production.

As lack of enough oil and sebum causes hair to become dry and brittle, ylang-ylang can improve hair texture and reduce hair breakage.

How to use: Mix five drops of ylangylang with two tablespoons of warm oil.

Massage it into your scalp, and wrap your head with a warm towel. Leave it in for thirty minutes before washing it out.

Outdoor Learning Adventure Bosmere Junior School in Havant, graded a good school at their last Ofsted inspection in January 2018, has been listening to the views of their pupils when it comes to making learning fun.

Headteacher, Kathryn Robinson, explained, “We are always very keen to gather the views of the children when we are looking at planning for the future. Our School Council has a really active role in this process, putting forward the ideas of the pupils in their class at our regular meetings.

We are lucky to have some fabulous school grounds here at Bosmere, but the children felt we needed to develop them further to make sure we could use them more for learning.”

So, an ‘Outdoor Learning Team’ was formed, led by teachers Lucy Barnard and Caroline Fisk, and the school set about investigating the possibilities. After visits to other schools and further consultation with the pupils, a plan emerged. They were also successful in gaining some additional funding for the project from County Councillors.

Phase one of the plan was completed in the Summer Term 2018. The school held a ‘Big Dig’ day, enlisting the help of governors, parents and the local community, including a team of workers from SSE who were keen

to be involved in a community project. Bark chippings for the paths, along with tree stumps to create class seating in the copse area were kindly donated by Mike Reed Tree Surgeons. A fantastic meadow area was created in one corner of the field which, once it has been fully developed, will provide a wonderful learning resource for studying different wildlife and habitats. It will also be a great space for children to explore at break times.

Also part of phase one was the creation of a ‘Relax and Read’ area in the playground.

English Manager, Nicola White, explained, “We wanted to create an inviting space in which children could simply get lost in a

book, away from the hustle and bustle of the playground. The brightly coloured benches and tables, along with outdoor bean bags and cushions in the nicer weather, help to promote reading as a fun pastime.”

Headteacher, Kathryn Robinson added, “We are very proud of our attainment in reading at Bosmere, being above both the national average and the average for Hampshire.” The school also dedicated the ‘Fabulous Chair’ in this area to a teaching assistant, Sue Fellah, who had sadly passed away earlier in the year.

Phase two of the development was completed this week, with the creation of an amazing living willow dome at the end of the

field. This will provide an additional outdoor classroom space, as well as producing the school’s own supply of willow which can be used for art projects!

Elaine and Ganesh from Creative Willow worked with the Year three children over the course of two days to create the hazel frame for the dome and plant the living willow. They also had a wonderful time experimenting with making sculptures from the willow.

“We are very proud of what we have achieved so far,” commented the Headteacher. “We are looking forward to watching how things grow and to having some fun in our new environments!”

…and the band played on EVERY year the Remembrance Day ceremonies are special – but this year, to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War, people in Havant could feel the poignancy of the commemorations.

Those wanting to pay their respects lined the streets of the town centre for the Community Act of Remembrance parade, organised by the Havant branch of the Royal

British Legion n Brockhampton Lane, from where the parade started marching through the streets of Havant to St Faith’s Church.

The parade was led by the magnificent Hampshire and Isle of Wight Army Cadet Force Band.

The band travelled from their headquarters in Southampton especially for the occasion.

PORTSmOUTh WATER TIgERS WIn REgIOnAL WInnOVATOR AWARD FOR EUROPE AnD AmERICA

A team of employees from Portsmouth Water, calling themselves the PW Tigers, took home three awards last night at the prestigious WaterAid Winnovators Awards.

The awards were for Best Social Media, runner up for Best Community Approach and the highlight was winning the main award the Regional Overall Winner for Best Team for Europe and North America.

The Winnovator challenge this year featured 31 teams from the UK, USA, India and Australia. This global challenge saw teams from across the UK, America and Australia choose either a water, sanitation or hygiene-focused problem to overcome using innovative thinking and fresh creative skills. The teams have over the past six months worked hard to find workable

solutions to help reach some of the poorest communities in India gain access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene, as well as raising funds and awareness of WaterAid in their local communities.

The Portsmouth Water Tigers consisted of six team members from all areas of Portsmouth Water. The team have worked together to develop a multimedia toolkit for children aged 6-14 years old in India to teach and develop their knowledge on hygiene. The toolkit consists of three different lesson plans, a top trumps style card game, handwashing technique and an implementation plan.

Hayley Wakeford, Chair of the Portsmouth Water Tigers, said “Myself and the team are still in a state of shock. I was so proud of the team in raising over £12k for WaterAid, but to be recognized by WaterAid as overall winner for Europe and America is beyond any of our

expectations. We are a small team, but our solution was simple and effective and now we are really excited about bringing our ideas to life by working with Portsmouth Water ensuring we have an ongoing legacy of our work.”

Neville Smith, Managing Director of Portsmouth Water, said “This team were up against teams from much larger organisations and resources, so to find that they were named regional winners for Europe and America is just fantastic. This is an outstanding and unique achievement.

We are all very proud of what they achieved and this recognition is well deserved for the effort and imagination the team put into this initiative.”

(The Young Explorers Squad) was created by Park Community School to provide a range of experiences, opportunities and activities to encourage students to look outside the box, expand their expectations and gain knowledge in order that they may make informed future life choices.

Students spent a very enjoyable and informative day at Portsmouth Dockyard on Saturday 17 November. One of our students attending, Jack commented: “I was so excited to be invited to go to Portsmouth Dockyard, I went when I was small but can’t really remember it. I really liked all of

havant Rotary - Christmas and so much more

Our Club Round of this National competition took place this Saturday 17th November 2018 at Hayling College (HIC). Seven young aspiring chefs took part, all under 17 years of age, from Havant and South Downs College (HSDC), Park Community School and Hayling College.

The young chefs were commended by our three judges , James Parsons, Janice Wyatt and Andrew Jessup, for the high quality of the three course healthy meal for two adults they produced in two hours. The young chefs also impressed the judges, teachers, family members and Rotarians by the professional manner in which they undertook the competition.

The judges awarded the first prize to Izabella Darmanin from HSDC, the second to Rose Williamson, third to Joshua Marsh, and the fourth to Ronnie Mardell all from HIC. All four will now go on to the Second Round of the Competition in January.

Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Havant looked forward to Christmas with as much excitement as children and the highlight of the year is being in the community with their magnificent sleigh – a sparkling marvel to behold.

The Sleigh provides a very public opportunity for the Rotary Club to thank the community for their past support and to look forward to future engagement as they continue their good works with local charities, schools and individuals throughout in 2019.

The more senior members of our community are also supported in many ways including ‘Days Out’.
