YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHERS NEEDED …to win cash prizes!

Postcode Publications has teamed up with the Havant Rotary Club to launch an exciting new competition aimed at Young Photographers.

There are a few rules to follow so that all entrants can be judged fairly! Quite simply all you have to produce is a portfolio of three photographs based upon the theme “Beauty of Nature” in colour or black and white. Each print, including any mount, should be no larger than A4 size and Mobile Phones may be used.

There is some time to think about entering the competition as the closing date is 28 February 2019 but the sooner entries are received the better.

There’s always some small print required when photographs are printed and published so it is important that you complete the application form which must accompany your portfolio.

WATERLOOVILLE SUMMER FETE August in Waterlooville finished with a flourish at the Waterlooville Summer fete.

Yes, the drizzle started the day, or was it just low cloud?!, but it did not deter the community who came out to enjoy the entertainment on offer. The Big Noise Samba Band led the way to the Arena with Fit'n'Funky dancing behind. This really started the day with a bang! Numerous acts followed in the arena. Many had a go at playing the drums of the Samba Band and the children loved watching the magic man, Toni Spaghetti and his puppets. The Prime Time band played music from 60's, 70's and 80's which got feet tapping. Not to be forgotten were the soloists and the wind quartet. Really something for everyone.

Elsewhere children were entertained with the animals, circus skills, fair,YBus, laser quest...and so the list goes on. Plenty for the adults as well. 90 stalls offered a variety

of things to buy, or get information. The dog show must not be forgotten or the horse and carriage, and so much else, too much to mention. All in all a fabulous day, especially as the sun came out at lunchtime. A big thank you must go to the volunteers of the Waterlooville Events Team who pulled the day together. The community of Waterlooville really came together!

The annual Purbrook Horticultural Society Summer Show, held at Crookhorn College showed that despite the atrocious growing conditions, members managed to put on a spectacular display.

This year showed an increase in new exhibitors showcasing their talents which resulted in some even being awarded a trophy, a pleasing indication of the health of the Society.

Visitor numbers also on the increase meant that the wonderful catering team were kept extremely busy providing Coffee, Tea and delicious slices of home made cake which in turn led to a very busy homemade Jam and Cake stall as visitors wished to take some home!

The quality of exhibits, much admired by visitors was true vindication for members’ hard work, dedication and determination to produce items for the Summer Show. So, with the success ringing in their ears can they rest on their laurels? Now the Spring Show booked for Sunday 24th March 2019 at Deverell Hall, Purbrook and schedules now available means the hard work begins again to produce even more

As an active local MP, my support for local schools, charities, community groups, businesses and voluntary organisations is often the most visible part of my work.The big community events I organise myself are wellknown too – my annual Jobs & Apprentices Fair, Small Business Awards and Community Groups & Older Persons Fair now attract thousands of residents between them.

Residents will also see me speaking in the House of Commons or meeting Ministers to campaign for more funding for our schools, police or NHS. However, a key aspect of my work is often unseen. Every day I receive around 500 pieces of correspondence, including letters, e-mails, social media messages, postcards, flyers, and telephone messages from constituents. They’ll include invitations, information updates, campaigns people want to me support, and most importantly requests for help.

Given the number of elderly residents in our area, I probably receive more paper letters in the post than most MPs, as well as a high number of “standard-wording” emails generated by websites like 38 Degrees.

Each item of correspondence takes time to read, and is then logged onto our computer system. Like most MPs, I don’t deal

with constituent queries via social media – we need everything in writing, so we can keep proper records. But I do reply to every letter or email received, unless I’ve already replied covering the same issue as I can’t give a running commentary on general policy issues like the Middle East Peace Process or Brexit (for or against) or whatever happens to be in the news that week.

This system allows me to prioritise personal requests for specific help, like welfare benefits payments enquiries, tracking down passports, and helping with medical or immigration issues. These personal issues come first, and take up the lion’s share of my time, and my staff’s time.

Often, I must contact Havant Borough Council because the issue is their responsibility (like housing, parking or bin collections for example) or Hampshire County Council (who deal with roads, and children’s and adult services); write to a Government Department; or chase an NHS body for answers before replying to constituents. This all takes time, often waiting weeks for them to look into an issue before replying to me. But getting a good result is one of the most satisfying aspects of my work.

Suicide Prevention Month September 10th 2018 marked World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD). A day where the International Association for Suicide Prevention (ISAP) encouraged people of all ages to get online via social media and hashtag to their hearts content about their thoughts, feeling and experiences.

IASP were delighted to announce the support of Twitter on World Suicide Prevention Day stating “When you tweet with the hashtags in the 16 languages listed on our website; Twitter will automatically apply the international yellow and orange suicide prevention ribbon as an emoji to your hashtag”.

They went onto ask “Please share these hashtags as much as possible and help spread awareness of suicide prevention”.

Suicide prevention remains a universal challenge. Every year, suicide is among the top 20 leading causes of death globally for people of all ages. It is responsible for over 800,000 deaths, which equates to one suicide every forty seconds.

ISAP says “Every life lost represents someone’s partner, child, parent, friend or colleague. For each suicide approximately 135 people suffer intense grief or are otherwise affected. This amounts to 108 million people per year who are profoundly impacted by suicidal behaviour”.

A suicidal person may not ask for help, but that doesn’t mean that the help is not wanted. In most cases people who take their lives do not want to die – it is a desperate action that is taken when they feel that there is no other option.

Suicide prevention starts with recognising the warning signs and taking them seriously.

YourMentalHealth details below the suicide warnings signs that could be seen when a person may be considering taking their life: • Talking about suicide -Threatening or talking about hurting or killing themselves, looking for ways to kill themselves, or talking about a suicide plan or date.

• Saying goodbye - Saying goodbye to family and/or friends, talking about going away, giving away possessions, leaving farewell messages on social media sites.

• No hope for the future – Feelings of being trapped, talking about no way out or no other option.

• Self-loathing, self-hatred – Talking about feelings of hopelessness.

• Extreme emotions - these can appear as irrational expressions of rage, revenge, or anger.

• Withdrawing from others – Withdrawing or disconnecting from friends, family or the community.

• Self-destructive behaviour – Self-harming, or engaging in reckless or risky behaviours, Increased use of alcohol or other drugs.

national network of local crisis centres that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

They say “we are committed to improving crisis services and advancing suicide prevention by empowering individuals, advancing professional best practices, and building awareness”. If you see any of the above warning signs take them seriously, you can offer guidance of where help can be given in times of crisis.

Postcode Publications First Volunteer Day for Local Business

The volunteers from CIA Alarms:

Opportunities for volunteering in the Havant area are growing by the day, and so for a day in September Community First were delighted to welcome some help from

a fantastic group of volunteers from CIA Alarms, based in Waterlooville.

Community First are keen to support Staunton Country Park in the

transformation of the parkland and gardens, the group from CIA alarms rose to the challenge.

Work at Staunton is a three-year program being funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund in conjunction with Hampshire County Council. The programme will see the restoration of the original Regency and Victorian parkland as well as the creation of new visitor facilities.

Liza Smith,Volunteer Coordinator at Staunton welcomes the input from CIA alarms: “We were delighted to host CIA working alongside our regular volunteers.

They were involved in coppicing an area of woodland to encourage the growth of new plants and let sunlight in. Coppicing is an important management technique as it encourages a healthy and varied biodiversity.

The involvement of volunteers is vital to the long term success of the transformation programme.”

Fiona from CIA Alarms said “This is our first event in conjunction with Community First and we have thoroughly enjoyed working to sustain the beautiful park for our families and future generations. It has

opened our eyes on what is required to maintain this large area. We would encourage volunteers to help, as this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what needs undertaking. CIA Alarms have been based in the area for over 45 years. It was great for us to give something back to our local community, and to see the difference has made it very worthwhile.”

The team from CIA alarms were hardworking and it was fantastic to see the huge difference they managed to make in just one day. Staunton were thrilled with their work and enjoyed their fun, friendly and enthusiastic company.

CRAFT BEERS - Enjoy your Local Ales CAROUSING IN THE COTSWOLDS I have recently returned from a week in the Cotswolds with the car brimming with Cotswold beer. The Cotswolds are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and comprise 2,000 sq. kms. of the counties of Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Somerset, Worcestershire and Warwickshire.

The borders of the Cotswold are roughly, the Thames to the South, the Severn Vale to the west and the Vale of Evesham to the north. In Gloucestershire alone there are 40 craft breweries. I was very impressed by both the quality and range of local beers available in Cotswold towns. Local Co-ops stocked a wide range of beers from local breweries. The two oldest breweries in the Cotswolds are Donnington, near Stow-on-theWold which has been brewing since 1865 and Hook Norton, near Banbury who started in 1849.

Here are my tasting notes on six different styles of beers made by six different Cotswolds breweries.

Donnington Brewery Double Donn Cotswold Ale 4.4% abv I would describe this as a Best Bitter. It is a superb example of English beer at is very finest. It pours a rich ruby colour with an autumnal leafy aroma. The taste is very full bodied with lots of malt coming through.

There is also a herbal bitterness to beer. This is the type of beer one hopes to get when asking for a pint of bitter. Donnington are based in the tiny village of Upper Swell which is near Stow-on-the –Wold where they have

been brewing since 1865. Their beers are available from 20 local pubs in the Stow area.

Hillside Brewery Over the Hill Dark Mild 3.5% abv Mild is an old fashioned style of beer which has almost died out in the south of England. I was pleasantly surprised to find it widely available in the Cotswolds area.

This beer pours black and has a chocolate, coffee, roasted aroma. It is a rich, smooth beer which is verging on being a stout. Hillside are based in Longhope, Gloucestershire and were founded in 2011.

They brew a range of traditional English beers as well as a craft lager.

Stroud Brewery Big Cat Organic Stout 4.5% abv It is good to be able to try a traditional stout as many craft stouts are now flavoured with coffee, chocolate and other additives.

aroma and a very rich, full smooth coffee/chocolate taste. It is not too roasted and would be a good drink for any occasion.

The brewery was founded in Stroud in 2006 and their beers are available at local pubs and independent retailers in the Cotswolds area.

Bespoke Brewery Leading Light Light Blonde 3.5% abv This is a Golden Ale which pours a rich gold colour with a herbal aroma. It has a dry, bitter, restrained taste far removed from the heavily hopped American style IPAs which seem to dominate the output of many craft brewers.

This is a beer to give a lager drinker who states they don’t like bitter. I felt it would go well with a curry.

Bespoke Brewery are based in Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire and have been brewing since 2012. They produce a wide range of beers including Stout, Bitter, Strong Ale, Mild, and several IPAs. Loddon Hocus Pocus Old Ale 5% abv This fine beer pours a ruby red with a caramel aroma. The taste is full on malt and it has a slightly syrupy mouth-feel. This is quite a chewy beer which reminded me of Gales HSB. Loddon were formed in 2002 and are based at a farm in the village of Dunsden, Oxfordshire. They supply over 500 outlets and brew half a dozen traditional beers. Their beers are widely available in the Oxfordshire/Thames Valley area.

Battledown Pale Ale 3.8% abv This is a good interpretation of a modern style pale ale. It pours a golden yellow and has grapefruit, tropical fruit and honey aroma.

The taste is not as overwhelmingly citrusy as some American style ales. This is a pleasant, fruity drink that would make a good session ale. Battledown have been brewing in Cheltenham since 2005. They supply over 250 outlets.

Scottish & Southern Energy Exchange Skills with Young People from Park Community School SSE (Scottish and Southern Energy) helped to develop young people’s employability skills and at the same gained a valuable insight into their marketing of apprenticeships to young people.

SSE hosted a unique programme with EBP South for a group of students from Park Community School. LEAP (Learn Excel Aspire Programme) covers sessions that help young people to become work ready by learning teamwork skills, leadership, communication and management, time management, first impressions and presentation skills.

The programme has been developed to support young people with employability skills whilst also linking them to the world of work

which businesses say young people lack.

CBI/Pearson Education, Education and Skills survey 2016:The Right Combination found that “50% [of businesses] are not satisfied with young people's communication skills and 50% and most important factor employers weigh up when recruiting school and college leavers is their attitude to work (89%).

All the sessions took place at the SSE’s office’s delivered by EBP South staff with the support of SSE’s staff over 6 weeks. During which the young people learnt about roles in the business from employees, got to experience the work environment and worked towards their end project set by SSE.

The end project set by SSE was to present on ‘How can SSE enthuse young people to take up their apprenticeships and develop their employer brand.’ The young people gave essential advice and creative ideas that SSE

were take back to their teams.

It was a great opportunity for SSE to be proactive in supporting their local community as well as develop their communication skills, training skills and leadership skills.

10.00 and 12.00 every second Tuesday of the month - November 13th, December 17th.

We will also be in Waterlooville Library every second Thursday of the month November 8th, December 13th.

Please come and see us as there is a lot on offer; we promote seventy organisations in the local area and a hundred and eight different opportunities to volunteer.

Beach cleaning volunteers being guided by Bianca Carr founder of Final Straw Solent

Schools outreach Since it started in April 2018, Final Straw Solent volunteers have been into 13 school assemblies around the Havant area telling the children about the impact of plastic pollution.

“We use slides, videos and general chatting we tell them why plastic pollution is now a major international problem, how it is causing massive damage to the environment and about its impact on wildlife,” Final Straw’s Bianca Carr says.

Following this, some schools also carried out planned plastic workshops or beach cleans with Final Straw Solent to supplement their learning.

“We get them to carry out educational activities related to the topic,

Which plastic, which bin?

Peter Vince, Operations Director of Havant Borough Council’s waste collection partner Norse South East, explains how residents can help the community maximise the efficient disposal of household plastic waste: Wash and squash - Clean all bottle-shaped plastic items (cleaning is important because bottles with residue can contaminate whole batches containing cleaned recyclables as well) squash them down (as this will save space) and put them into the recycling bin. Tops go in the general waste bin.

Put non-recyclable plastic, (ie everything except bottle-shaped plastic) in your general waste bin. Even this plastic has a reprocessing use as 92% of Hampshire’s general waste is incinerated to help generate electricity for the National Grid.

Q I would like to be able to commute to work by bike but want my cycling to be a bit more smooth and stable. I can ride a bike already but I am not confident about riding on the roads.

A That is not unusual, even experienced cyclists may need to get used to a new bike, and feel slightly less stable until they get used to it.

In your case it might be a good idea to get an experienced cyclist to help you with a short training session.

You say that you can basically ride a bike but a good instructor will start by checking that the bike is roadworthy and set up right for your size. Leg length and saddle height are very important in terms of you being comfortable and feeling safe.

The next thing they will want to see you riding and may lead you on a short ride on a quiet street or paths where they can ride beside you and see how you go.

Even starting and stopping have little tips and techniques to make things easier.

You may be doing everything perfectly, but if not, a little tip here and there as you both ride along will make you feel more "at one" with your bike. If you are comfortable then there is one less thing to worry you.

After a while I would expect your guide

to lead you out on some roads with a little traffic, and talk you through riding on the road.

With someone riding behind you, your confidence will improve, and with that help you will manage road junctions more positively.

If your proposed ride to work involves bigger roads your guide will help you with the dreaded Roundabouts ! !

The most important thing when cycling is to be aware of the traffic around you, and with roundabouts particularly, knowing how to check when it is safe to move out and which bit of road to use is vital. Alternatively, if the traffic is too heavy for you, there is no shame in pulling to the side and finding a pedestrian crossing where you can walk your bike across.

After about an hour you will probably welcome a break, a stop for refreshment, and to let all that has happened sink in.

Sitting and talking through things will help it all to get locked into your memory. If that is before the end of your session you will both have to ride back to your start point, and by now you will be happier, even if the road is busier.

You should notice that you are now a little more relaxed and confident even if a van or lorry passes you.

It won't happen all at once, but like many other things in life, it is practice which helps. The more you cycle the better you get at automatically doing things that you now have to think about . The steadier and smoother your cycling will become, and the more confident you will be as you cycle along whilst always being aware of what is happening around you.

To sum up, the more you ride, the more confident you will become, and so the smoother, and more stable you will be.

Cycling's 'Mr. Fixit ' retires After half a lifetime supporting cyclists in the area, a dozen local cyclists descended on John and Lin Withy at Sivyer Cycles in North Parade, Havant to wish them both well in their forthcoming retirement.

Sivyer Cycles was founded by Bob Sivyer in September 1984 after many years working for Curry's who at that time were cycle retailers.

The original Sivyer Cycle shop was in Fareham, and Bob opened a second shop in Portchester in 1986 when he was joined by his son-in-law, John Withy who had married Lin Sivyer in 1981 while he was a tyre fitter for a bus company in Chichester.

Sometime later the Portchester shop closed, and the business remained in Fareham for a while. About 2001 Bob and John with him moved to Waterlooville where they operated their shop, selling bikes and spares as well as doing cycle servicing and repairs.

Small independent cycle shops have always been a hub for cyclists to gather and chat to each other and the shop owner, about cycling matters, people they know, events coming up and races they have ridden.

John admits that in his youth he was probably as guilty as anyone of spending

too much time in his local bike shop so it was, perhaps, natural that he would take the opportunity to run his own bike shop sooner or later.

After six years in Waterlooville, Sivyer Cycles moved to Havant where they have continued to serve local cyclists for the last eleven years.

This local business has existed for 34 years , and John has been with it for the last 32 of them.

Cycling has changed a lot in those years.

To a certain extent bikes have become a fashion statement. Some makers have disappeared, merging with others, and the televising of major tours with the British successes has fuelled a bigger public interest.

The bikes have changed, too. Commuter bikes and racing bikes have evolved. Carbon fibre construction and disc brakes have come along.

Cyclists have never been confined to the road but Mountain Biking became a craze with purpose built bikes including hydraulic suspension and fat knobbly tyres.

All these, John has taken in his stride and continued to serve the wider cycling community whether dedicated road riders, families needing help with toddlers bikes, and included maintaining the exercise bikes at the Leisure Centre!

John has always been there with Lin in the shop while he was spending much of his time doing the repairs etc. In fact, John is looking forward to being able to take a holiday of more than one week, a privilege that he has not enjoyed for years.

The shop closed on 31st August and Portsmouth CTC presented both of them

with retirement gifts and a cash collection from grateful cyclists and customers.

Langstone Rowing supports another World Championship!

Two local rowers are going to the 2018 World Offshore Rowing Championships in Victoria, Canada 12-14th October 2018; www.worldrowing.com/events/2018world-rowing-coastal-championships Rowing in the single scull class of boats, Jenny Glass from Langstone and Kern Toussaint from Portsmouth, are busy finetuning their practice in this exciting international sport. Rowing around Chichester and Langstone Harbours - seen

This form of coastal racing utilises sliding seat, stable boats that are self-buoyant – FISA Class - sculling in Singles, Doubles and Quads. The racing format has an exciting beach start; a ‘W’ shaped 4-kilometre course for Heats & a 6-kilometre course for Finals; and a beach run to finish. It all takes place in open sea water, with no lanes, other than the start; and several tightly contested ‘buoy’ turns along the way.

Coach Mike Jenny in Epona Gilbert from Langstone Adventure Rowing says: “This form of coastal rowing combines our unique know-

how of coastal Kern in Epona rowing, coaching and training with sliding seats. It is a challenging conversion for sliding seat rowers - and fixed coastal rowers alike! We wish Jenny and Kern the very best of fortune in the World Championships and will be attending to see how it all goes.

TESCO STORES ORGANISE FUNDRAISER FOR QA HOSPITAL CHARITY Two hundred players from thirty Tesco stores across the South Coast have taken part in an all-day football event to raise money for Portsmouth Hospitals Charity’s Patient Experience Charitable Fund.

Portsmouth Hospitals Charity, based at Queen Alexandra Hospital raise money for all Wards and Departments within Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust.

The Patient Experience Charitable Fund provides equipment to support people with learning disabilities who need hospital care,

it provides a Carer’s Café, which is a quiet place for carers of people who have been admitted to have a cup of coffee, a chat, and have access to information they need to help them look after their loved one. The Fund also provides a programme that encourages people who may have difficulties communicating, and volunteering opportunities for people with autism, mental ill health, physical and learning disabilities.

The football event raised an amazing

£1,080.00, which will be put towards a portable sensory machine, which can transform a patient’s room into a sensory experience. It is always a pleasure to raise money for charitable causes.”

So today’s subject is “Plantarfaciitis, I have had it ages, what can I do to help?”

What is plantarfaciitis?

Plantarfasciitis is the third most common injury in runners and approximately 10% of people have plantarfasciitis at some point during their lifetime. It is a pain in the heel and underside of the foot.

The plantarfacia itself is a tough band of fibrous tissue that extends from the heel bone to the toes. It supports the arch of your foot and takes a lot of load during walking and running.

Plantarfaciitis is an overuse injury to the facial sheet on the sole of the foot.

Cause of Plantarfaciitis • When there is an increased load placed on the plantarfacia by running, walking, playing tennis or by a patient’s biomechanics.

• Tight calf muscles

• Poor footwear • Poor glutes control • Calf muscle weakness What are the symptoms of Plantarfaciitis?

People with plantarfaciitis may have a number of symptoms including: • Pain on the bottom of your foot, sometimes going into your heel.

• Usually the first few steps in the morning are painful but this gradually settles as you continue walking.

• Walking barefoot, on your toes, going up stairs and running all tend to aggravate the pain.

Treatment There are lots of different treatment options from taping, to sports massage to release of tight calf muscles and plantarfascia, ankle joint mobilisation, strengthening exercises, stretches, acupuncture and ultrasound.

Plantar Fascia Stretch • Hold the stretch for 10 seconds, repeat 10 times, at least 3 x day • Do this exercise before taking your first step in the morning, and before standing after prolonged sitting Frozen Can Roll • Roll your bare injured foot back and forth from your heel to your mind-arch over a frozen can or bottle.

• Repeat for 3-5 minutes. This exercise is particular helpful if done first thing in the morning or at the end of the day.

Heel Raise

• Every second day for three months.

• Every heel-rise consisted of a three second concentric phase (going up) and a three second eccentric phase (coming down) with a 2 second isometric phase (pause at the top of the exercise).

• The high-load strength training was slowly progressed throughout the trial as previously reported by Kongsgaard et al.

• 12 repetition maximum (RM) for three sets.

• After two weeks, they increased the load by using a backpack with books and reduced the number of repetitions to 10RM, simultaneously increasing the number of sets to four.

• After four weeks, they were instructed to perform 8RM and perform five sets.

• They were instructed to keep adding books to the backpack as they became stronger.

• A key clinical point is that the calf-raises need to be done slowly.

New stretch proven to dramatically relieve pain from Plantarfasciitis

A new stretch is proving quite effective to help treat and potentially cure plantar fasciitis, a condition that affects nearly 2.5 million Americans each year. In a study recently published in Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, researchers found that patients suffering from the painful heel spur syndrome had a 75 percent chance of having no pain and returning to full activity within three to six months of performing the stretch. In addition, patients have about a 75 percent chance of needing no further treatment.

The study is a two-year follow-up on 82 patients with plantar fasciitis, all of whom were part of an original clinical trial of 101 patients in 2003. The patients were taught a new stretch that specifically targets the plantar fascia developed

by Benedict DiGiovanni. M.D., associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Rochester and author of the study, and Deborah Nawoczenski, P.T., Ph.D., professor of physical therapy at Ithaca College.

The stretch requires patients to sit with one leg crossed over the other, and stretch the arch of the foot by taking one hand and pulling the toes back toward the shin for a count of 10. The exercise must be repeated 10 times, and performed at least three times a day, including before taking the first step in the morning and before standing after a prolonged period of sitting. More than 90 percent of the patients were totally satisfied or satisfied with minor reservations, and noted distinct in pain and activity limitations.

We have previously highlighted the need for clear numbering of all properties on the Island to assist both responders and ambulances to quickly attend patients. During the summer months a related problem has arisen a number of times that has delayed our emergency response.

Giving a clear and concise location when calling 999 or 111 is equally as important as having the location of the incident clearly signed.

On a number of occasions valuable minutes, sometimes as many as twenty, have been taken up trying to find where the patient is located as the incorrect address was given to ambulance control.

On one recent occasion the wrong address was given for a patient who was

found to be in cardiac arrest. This resulted in both the Hayling CFR, who would otherwise have been with the patient in under four minutes, specialist paramedics and the supporting ambulance and specialist paramedics losing valuable time in attending the patient. The seriousness of this becomes very clear when you realise that for every 1 minute delay the chance of survival drops by 10% if a defibrillator cannot be applied to the patient, albeit immediate commencement of CPR will make an invaluable contribution to maintaining the patient’s life support function.

The third day Job is running The Emsworth Brewery, and it’s just a year since we obtained a licence to sell our beers through the Antique Shop in West Street.

Since then, we’ve been asked quite a number of times, what the inspiration was for this move; so, hands up anyone who’s

heard of The Killorglin Puck Fair? No? Well, that was the start of it. That, and the bicycle shop in Dingle and the upstairs bar in Cork.

So, Michael and I were on holiday in Eire, timed to attend the Puck Fair. People with Killorglin roots travel in from around the world. As does a large male goat who is crowned king and fed on shamrock for three days before being released back to the wild.

The people party below with much music.

It was in a back street of Killorglin that we found a grocery shop open at 8am, serving pints of beer rather than selling the very faded out-of-date tins and packets on its sparse shelving.

And then, a few days later we found the hardware and bicycle shop in Dingle that doubled as a bar / pub. This one didn’t open til 10.30. No special events this time; just bikes, tools and beer.

And then there was the microbrewery in Cork. Set in old stables with modern glass-panelled doors to satisfy the curious, and a bar above. Nice, integrated

set-up.

The following year, Fullers bought our local Gales brewery and moved production to London.

Cue my big mouth.

“Isn’t it a shame”, I said to husband Michael whilst having a drink at the Lord Raglan “with Gales moved away, that Emsworth doesn’t have a microbrewery like the one we saw in Cork.”

“Especially”, I said, digging deeper “since Emsworth has such a strong historic tradition of brewing and pubs”.

Well, Michael started looking into it, got hooked on the idea of The Emsworth Brewery and began the search for premises.

It would have to be in Emsworth, and affordable; a West Street site was advertised and we took the plunge.

Of course, the potential brewery buildings came with a shop. So, what do you do? You set up an antiques centre while you develop the brew-house.

And then you get a licence.

So, heading into our second year of direct beer sales and Christmas, we’re expanding from just selling bottles, into 5ltr and 10ltr beer boxes (like wine boxes) as well as the thirty-six and seventy-two pint pins and casks for larger parties.

We’ll need to take bookings to make sure that we cater for demand. So make sure you book early to avoid disappointment – we’ll have forms in the shop. That’s the Antique Shop in West Street, Emsworth.

Don’t stop Wining PORT – The Ultimate Christmas Drink

By Jonathan Rogers of VIN Wine Merchants There are several different drinks that I sell in abundance over the festive period and very little the rest of the year.

Port is no exception although I sell more outside of the festive period then drinks like Cointreau or Baileys.

Port has been in our hearts for generations and is the favoured drink at Christmas time when the cheese board comes out. The varied styles appeal to the masses and the quality of the wine is superb.

Port is made by draining off red wine which has only partly fermented so it still contains a fair amount of the natural sugars, into a vessel containing brandy.

The fermentation stops, and the result is a mixture which is both strong and sweet. The wine still needs the colour extraction from the skins along with the tannin which is normally achieved through a longer fermentation, but as with Port the fermentation is short, this extraction must come from another process, and that is treading.

I’m often asked if treading the grapes by foot still exists and Port production is pretty much still done this way, although some of the bigger house have introduced mechanical treading that mimic the gentle action that treading by foot achieves.

The vineyards have a classification from A down to F which reflect the quality of their natural advantages which include altitude, soil, location and age of the vines. The higher the classification the more valuable the grapes. The grapes used for production are Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz which is related to the Tempranillo grape grown all over Spain, Tinta Cao and Tinta Barroca.

The many different classifications of Port make it somewhat confusing to understand. For example, Vintage Port is made from grapes from one year and is only declared a vintage in exceptional years like vintage Champagne, and must be aged in barrel for a minimum of 18 months. LBV (Late Bottled Vintage) is vintage Port but aged for much longer typically for around 4 to 6 years. LBV does not have the intensity of vintage port but finer examples can show an elegant, velvety rich style and can offer great value for money.

e get all of our gammon and bacon from Sandridge Farmhouse in Wiltshire. They rear their own pigs, and do all the curing and smoking on site using traditional methods to ensure the best quality you can buy. Their pork is high welfare and free from artificial hormones, growth promoters and routine antibiotics. They do not inject the meat with water, so when you cook your bacon, it does not shrivel to half it’s size in a puddle of white, instead it’s the finest bacon you will eat.

Recipe If you are going for a large gammon joint, then it’s best to simmer the gammon and then finish by roasting. If it’s a smaller joint (2kg of less) then I would just roast the joint.

Cooking time should be approximately 40 minutes per Kilo (20 minutes a pound).

If over 5Kg (10lb) in weight reduce to between 30 and 35 minutes per Kilo (15 17 minutes a pound). If under 2kg increase to 60 minutes a Kilo (30 mins a pound).

This is a guide and it’s best to use a meat thermometer to get the best results.

Boiled and roasted If your ham is a large portion or a whole ham, place while vacuum packed into gently boiling water. (Leaving the ham in the vac pack seals in a lot of the flavor and

prevents the ham from becoming crumbly).

(Warning only to be done at gentle boil, not at a full Boil) When the bag starts to loosen around the meat (this should be half way through your calculated cooking time), lower heat to a simmer. Remove from the vac pack and place into the same water. Then add a carrot, onion, celery and bay leaf to the water for flavour.

Continue to boil until the center of the ham reaches 68°C then turn off the heat and leave the ham in the water for up to 1 hour until the temperature reaches 71°C. Your ham is now cooked!!

Peel the skin from the ham, leaving the fat layer intact. An option is to score (cut) the fat layer in a criss-cross pattern to create diamond shapes in the fat.

Coat the ham with the glaze of your choice! Glazes can be as easy as mixing whole grain mustard to honey (50:50) adding caster sugar / brown sugar to glaze can help it to stick to the ham better.

For a beautiful finish, a clove can be added into the centre of each cut diamond!

Pre-heat oven to 160°C and roast for further 35 min average to reheat prior to meal!

Remove the cooked ham from the oven and allow the ham to rest for ten to fifteen minutes.

DIABETES DOUBLES IN UK DESPITE RESEARCH ADVANCES DRWF charity’s 20th anniversary marks ‘mounting challenge’ to NHS The Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation (DRWF) first opened its doors as a charity in the UK in 1998 yet, despite the many developments in the fields of diabetes research, treatment and education over the last 20 years, the number of people over the age of 16 diagnosed with the condition has more than doubled to 3.8 million, with type 2 diabetes driving this alarming growth.

“While we are proud to have funded over £11.5 million in significant research projects in the UK over our twenty-year history, the need for education and support is greater than ever,” stated DRWF Chief Executive Sarah Tutton.

“Diagnoses of all diabetes types in the UK have increased since 1998 when around 1.8 million people over the age of 16 were diagnosed with the condition to today’s more alarming figures of 3.8 million. In the UK it not only funded research but also developed a new educational programme by producing extensive support literature as well as an award-winning series of Diabetes Wellness Days in different parts of the country in a drive for better information available to people living with all forms of

diabetes.

“Last year the charity won the Quality in Care Diabetes (QiC) Judges’ Special Award for ‘providing an outstanding educational event programme for people with diabetes’ after being highly commended in the Empowering People with Diabetes in the Self-Management category,” explained Tutton.

DRWF introduced its first Diabetes Wellness Day South in 2008 a change to the ad-hoc Diabetes Wellness Workshops that the charity had previously held. The 10th annual day was recently held at The Solent Hotel in Whiteley, Fareham.

“Along with a successful education programme the charity has a rigorous research funding process and over the last 20 years it has contributed more than £11.5m into research in the UK alone.

DRWF Research Manager Dr Eleanor Kennedy emphasised that in addition to supporting the development of clinical procedures for islet cell transplants, the charity awards important pump priming funding: “These relatively small amounts help researchers to try out new theories and to get vital pilot data that helps with future bids for more significant funding.”

This is an area that has drawn praise from health professionals such as Professor Graham Hitman, recently

Leigh Park Residents Cycle Around The Globe!

On 10th September a mental health awareness event took place at Leigh Park Community Centre with over 150 people attending. Local people were invited to the Positive Living Event to find out about what services are available for people with mental health issues in the Havant area. Twenty agencies were represented, including Citizens Advice, Bereavement Centre, Mind, Parkway, Off the Record, Community First Youth and Training Teams, Chrysalis, Orion Centre, iTalk, SDAS, Making Space, Samaritans, Recovery College, Hollybank, Richmond Fellowship and Biscoes Solicitors.

The Positive Living event took place on World Suicide Prevention Day, helping to raise awareness about mental health and what services are available. A person dies every 40 seconds by suicide and up to 25 times as many again make a suicide attempt. At the event there was an exercise bike with attendees taking it in turns to cycle as many kilometres as they could. The challenge was to cycle 100km which would be added towards the global number of kilometres people were cycling on the same day around the world at

similar events. One person at the event stated “I wanted to attend the mental health day to find out about what help I can get for my 23 year old son, who has depression. I have met many mental health providers and got some really useful information and now feel more confident about helping my son with his recovery. I also had a go on the exercise bike and cycled 5k!”.

The event was organised by Community First’s Positive Pathways Big Lottery Funded Project, an initiative that supports people in the Havant area to volunteer in the community. Ina Allum, the Positive Pathways Coordinator said “we had a fantastic day with great support from local agencies, with the Deputy Mayor of Havant, Cllr Diana Patrick and Tim Houghton, Chief Executive of Community First, opening the event.

Cllr Patrick also had a go on the exercise bike, contributing to the 100k achieved by the attendees. I would like to thank all the agencies and local residents that came along to support this event and hope that if just one person got the information they need to help them on their mental health journey, then it was a great success”.

HAYLING NIKOLSKI ART EXHIBITION Works of the well-know local artist Athanasius Nikolski were loaned by their owners for the compilation of a gallery exhibition held recently at the Manor Farm Tearooms, Northney Farm, Hayling Island.

Son Max Nikolski a practising Russian Orthodox Priest was on hand to greet attendees and speak about his parents artistic life in Havant and Hayling Island. His mother was a sculptor.

Many of Nikolski’s works were displayed in Gardeners Art Gallery that existed in East Street until the owner’s retirement in the 1990s.

Both parents now rest in peace in Hayling’s St Peters churchyard.

After ten years of recording and mailing out Talking News to the blind and partially sighted people of Havant Borough, our all-volunteer group has turned its attention to a different problem – the sad state of affairs of the outside of its recording studios in West Street, Havant. Miracles are rare and it looks as if only hard work will return the Shop Front to its former glory.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) is asking children to start saving their 10p coins for the Charity’s latest fund-raising campaign; Save Up to Suit Up. The life-saving Charity is calling upon children from schools and youth groups across the region to save up their 10p coins to raise the £20,000 needed to fund new flights suits for the paramedics who make up the Charity’s Critical Care Teams. With a new flight suit costing approximately £650, the £20,000 target will fund thirty new flight suits, or two suits for every paramedic. Save Up to Suit Up will be launched on Monday 8th October and HIOWAA hopes to reach the £20,000 fundraising target by 31st March 2019.

The new flight suits are a two-piece design, making them more practical than the original one-piece suit currently worn by HIOWAA paramedics. They allow for better distribution of kit, which in turn reduces excess strain to the neck, shoulders and back. In addition, the new Hi Viz red suits are both water resistant and fire retardant, helping to increase visibility and safety at the scene of an incident.

‘Our flight suits need to be safe, practical and comfortable to allow us to carry out our day to day work as efficiently and effectively as possible. Thank you to children in our community for saving up to allow us to suit up!’ commented Specialist Critical Care Paramedic John Gamblin.

A range of fund-raising resources are available for children and parents to download from the Charity’s website,

including; make your own collection pots, target posters and teachers’ notes. The Charity will also provide fund-raising tips and games designed to help children reach their fund-raising targets.

Hayling Island Camera Club Hayling Island Camera Club members have been out and about all summer long, taking advantage of the exceptional weather! In addition to personal photoshoots or holiday images, a number of members have joined the many evening “Photo Walks” organised by member John Watkins at a number of venues along the coast from Hilsea Lines to Chichester Marina. Some of these images will no doubt appear as entries in internal club competitions during the 2019/19 season!

A very successful Annual Exhibition was held at Northney Farm Barn, Hayling Island, on 18/19th August. As the President, Keith Tester said “We had a total of 298 visitors – plus a few dogs and Doris, one of the Northney Farm chickens! (Pictured far right).

We tried to persuade her to vote for her favourite photograph but she wasn’t interested!” However, most visitors did vote and the image which easily won the public vote (with a margin of over one hundred) was “A Leap of Faith” by Gill Swift (pictured right).

On the first evening of the new season, 3rd September, Gill was presented with the Lee Filters Millennium Cup by the VicePresident, Gary Kenmir.

On that first evening the draw was also made to determine which Exhibition visitor won the image they would most like to take home. The winner was David Gray who had chosen “Sunlit Tree at Warblington” (pictured right) by Marjorie Clifton as his first choice.

Marjorie explained that the photograph had been taken during one of the club’s evening photo walks during the summer months.

The Club was pleased to welcome a good number of new members this season, many of whom had taken advantage of the free, all day workshop on offer to visitors at the Annual Exhibition.

The first outside presentation of the new season was “Talk from the Pit” by Simon Read – very different from the norm and very well-received by club members. He shared his personal journey trying to gain entry into the world of professional music photographers together with the very special challenges it presents - such as working in cramped spaces with a crowd of other photographers, dark stage areas, glaring stage lights and unpredictable singer and band movements

Gill said it was taken back in March when she and a group of friends were walking along the Hayling Billy Trail on the Island. Suddenly, they noticed a fox in a flooded field, leaping from tussock to tussock, in an unsuccessful effort to keep out of the water while he pursued a group of ducklings. Sadly, his quest was eventually successful and a duckling was carried back to the cubs in the den.

Rowlands Castle Art Society Rowlands Castle Art Society have started their winter programme.

Spokesperson Jan said “If you like drawing/painting why not come along to our friendly, well established Society which caters for all abilities.” “We are looking forward to workshops, life and portrait drawing afternoons and evening demonstrations, we have a very comprehensive programme.”

Meetings are held on a Tuesday in Rowlands Castle Parish Hall. Other events include picnic/painting days during the summer months and we hold a Christmas Party for members in December.

One of four artists who will be giving an evening demonstration during this time is award winning artist Lucie Cookson (pictured above). IMPORTANT BUT OVER LOOKED If your an instrument player as a hobby, just for the pleasure of playing an instrument, or a semi pro out gigging, what happens if you damage your instrument and it needs a repair? Or you develop a buzz, it’s not feeling the same as you last played it. A problem? Who do you turn to? Unlike being able to buy anything saleable these days on line, where are the guys who repair. The good news is there are still qualified and experience repairer’s making a steady living out there. Most work from home these days as the cost of premises puts up costs and quiet often the main cost of repairs are the labour costs then if the repair firm is over the vat rate another 20% up’s the bill. Most local music shops still do certain repairs on the premises and if they do only guitars and ukuleles then they usually know a man that can repair Brass and Woodwind, keyboards, violins and other unusual types… The older the instrument, keyboard or Amplification, quiet often the parts are no longer available, then if it’s a cheap instrument it may well prove to be beyond economical repair!

There are cases from plain canvass carry bags to padded Gig Bags of various thickness, then a range of hard cases and pod caseps available to protect your

instrument. With an electric guitar you have to remember the weight, like a Gibson Les Paul electric guitar can be very heavy and relying on a padded gig is taking a chance as I’ve known straps on these bags snap!! At that sort of price range you are better off with a good quality hard case.Your local music store should have a good selection and be able to help. If you can, add your instrument to your household insurance policy but do ask your insurance provider on any small print and cost. With the darker evenings coming more people will be playing in doors and there are some excellent gigs to go out to, have a good month and enjoy your music.

Lost Lovedean children’s book aiming to be bestseller A debut children’s book by a Lovedean author that was lost for 14 years is aiming to become a best-seller this autumn.

Beckham’s Boots is the story of a young boy whose passion for football isn’t matched by his ability until he receives a pair of the soccer star’s old boots.

But the manuscript went missing for more than a decade until the precious pages were discovered down the back of an old filing cabinet.

Now the book has been published for seven to twelve-year-olds and author Phil Tusler hopes it will become the first in a series of children’s releases.

He said: “I started writing it when my son was only ten years old. He’s 25 now so I’ve had

to apologize to him for it taking so long.

“The simple truth is I completed 95% of it and then mislaid the manuscript. I couldn’t remember where I had put it and over the years just assumed it must have got thrown out.

“Luckily my wife found it down the back of an old filing cabinet one day and there it was, a bit musty and crumpled, but all in one piece. I thought I’ve got to finish it now.”

Beckham’s Boots is being published by Showsport Publishing and Phil hopes the story of a boy called Billy whose love of football consumes his life will touch a chord with children everywhere.

He said: “There are lot of children out there who live and breathe sport whether they are any good at it or not and none more so than football.

The main character Billy Boyle is typical of them He’d love just to be a half-decent player but something is holding him back.

Then he buys a pair of David Beckham's schoolboy boots at a sporting auction which seem to have magical qualities which transform his game. But are they really magical and are the extra problems they bring worth having?

That’s the journey we take the readers on. It may have taken fourteen years to finish but I think it been worth the wait. David Beckham has been a sporting icon for many years and it is fitting he should provide the inspiration for both myself and the book’s main character Billy.”

Catherington WI had their annual outing in September. .First off we took the coach to Marlborough for shopping time and lunch there, Then on to Newbury to join up with a horse drawn canal boat . As the weather was perfect that day after the previous days storm we were all eager to start. There were forty-nine people on the trip so the whole barge was solely for us .

We were introduced to Drummer the Clydesdale /cob that was to tow us along .

We were a little concern as to the weight he was about to pull but were reassured that once the momentum started it was easy for him .He was - we learnt, one of a pair who did the work between them.

us. We then began the return journey back to the start point. During this time we had a cup of tea plus a scone and cream and a slice of cake . The journey back was just as rewarding with the odd walker and cyclist waving us along .

Hyden WI, Clanfield Now the summer is over it is time to reflect on the past few months.

Our July talk was given by local amateur astronomer Graham Bryant who gave us a fascinating insight to the Aurora Borealis.

He produced some magical photographs and explained the science behind this wonderful natural phenomenon.

We didn't have a speaker for our August meeting, instead we took advantage of the gorgeous weather and organised a ploughman's lunch to which husbands were invited. It was held in one of the member's gardens and was a really lovely spread, including some mouthwatering deserts. All was well, even if the weather had cooled down considerably, then, just as we had all collected our food, without warning, the heavens opened! We had to rush back inside for cover and wait for the rain to stop which it did and the rest of the day was enjoyed by all.

Our skittles team came 4th when they entered the annual skittles competition in Hayling Island. It was a most enjoyable evening which included a tasty buffet.

Our Ukulele group entered a competition (something we have never done before) for a chance to perform in the Hampshire Performing Arts Show which was held in Eastleigh on October 6th to celebrate 100 years of the WI. Much to our surprise we were chosen to go through. We sang and played Super Trooper and When the Chariot Comes Round the Mountain.

It was quite nerve racking but worth it when we received such a loud ovation at the end.

Advent A Cappella is a fun festive singing workshop for ladies, hosted by the wonderful Spinnaker Chorus, starting on Wednesday 14th November, 7.30pm at Blendworth Church Centre, Horndean PO8 0AA. Now in its second year this workshop is once again set to bring Christmas back to the community. It will run weekly for 5 weeks, during which time we will provide all learning materials to teach you a selection of festive songs in the company of chorus members.

No experience required, you do not need to be able to read music, just the ability to learn and hold a tune. There will be no pressure we just want you to come along, have fun and enjoy experiencing our fabulous hobby, singing in four part A Cappella (unaccompanied) harmony. We will also

provide refreshments including delicious cake. All this for just £5 per week!

For taking part in AAC’18 you will be invited to perform with Spinnaker at two of our Christmas events. Firstly at our Christmas Show,What the Dickens! on Saturday 8th December, which takes place at St. Mary’s Church, Fratton Road, Portsmouth. Also at our charity carol singing event at Gunwharf Quays shopping centre on Saturday 15th December, where we will be entertaining shoppers by the beautiful Christmas tree in Central Square. A percentage of donations collected will be given to Gunwharf’s selected charities.

WINTER SEASON Winter brings a rich and varied feast of touring dramas, dance, family shows, performance and music to Chichester Festival Theatre.

Festival Theatre, 15 – 30 December Chichester Festival Youth Theatre presents SLEEPING BEAUTY - For ages 7+ 30 December - Relaxed performance: at 2pm - A princess under a fairy’s curse pricks her finger on a spindle and sleeps for a hundred years, waiting to be woken by a prince’s kiss.

But hold on a moment. There’s a distinctly different slant to this story. The princess is beautiful and spirited but there are two princes and a lot of threatening thorns. As for the fairy who caused all the trouble in the first place – well, putting things right isn’t as simple as casting another spell.

Rufus Norris’s splendidly entertaining and mischievous version of the original fairy tale ventures beyond the usual ‘happy ever after’ ending with the prince and princess united. The course of true love never did run smooth – especially if your mother-inlaw is an ogress with an unfortunate taste for human flesh...

Rufus Norris’s version of Sleeping Beauty premiered at the Young Vic (2002). He is Director of the National Theatre.

Monday 10th December - 1845 for 1930 hrs ‘The History of Westland Aircraft’ presented by Bill McNaught - This fascinating story of Westland will cover the 70 years from its inception, by ‘ironmongers’ Ernest & Percival Petter in 1915, through its fixed wing design and production period, ending in 1948, and finally its far sighted decision to initiate helicopter production, up to the ‘Westland affair’ of 1986, which led to major changes in ownership. Bill will also include some of his own reminisces from his 25 years working at Westland.

Tales from a ‘Bomber Boy’ - on the Lancaster Bomber presented by John Bell DFC MBE RAF (retd.) - John Bell was a

Bomb Aimer in WW2, on the Lancaster Bomber that is currently flown by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. One of the famous ‘Bomber Boys’, John will be telling some tales of the time that he served in this Lancaster Bomber aircraft, as well as showing some films about the Lancaster and the Bomber Boys.

Monday 26th November - 1845 for 1930 hrs ‘A Day in the life of a 747 Captain Presented by Kim Sharman Kim Sharman has led the life of an aviator. From his youth he wondered where he was bound in life, and joined the Fleet Air Arm in 1965. Kim flew Sea Vixen fighters in the Royal Navy, serving for two operational tours on HMS Eagle.

After leaving the Royal Navy, he joined BOAC as a First Officer on the VC10.

Thereafter he joined Cathay Pacific, flying firstly the Boeing 707 and then the Boeing 747 (Jumbo), where he became a captain, until he retired in 1998.

Kim will answer a question that many of us wonder, every time we fly in a ‘Jumbo’ how do such huge beasts as the 747, actually manage to fly, navigate to the other side of

by Denise Kelly Fibromyalgia is an unpleasant disorder that causes muscle pain and fatigue, and sufferers may also experience trouble sleeping, morning stiffness, headaches, tingling or numbness in their hands and feet and problems with a ‘foggy’ memory.

While no one magic food will prevent a persons flare-ups, a number of dietary improvements can make a world of difference and may alleviate even the most daunting symptoms. One of the most important things I can advise is to improve your overall health and well-being by putting time and effort into your diet, because we really are ‘what we eat’.

I Know, I know! Its always about the fruits and vegetables! Why? Because they are typically low in calories, high in fibre, and rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals. That’s good news for those who are, respectively battling obesity, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or autoimmune disorders. These are all common among fibromyalgia patients.

Preservatives and colouring tend to have a negative effect on a person with Fibromyalgia and enhance painful symptoms. Eating more natural foods is key.

Reducing your carb intake and packing more protein into your diet can keep blood glucose levels from fluctuating, which can trigger fatigue. The classic Mediterranean diet is perfect for this condition because it helps people avoid those sugar rushes.

Be aware that Caffeine intake can trigger headaches and interfere with sleep patterns, which can further perpetuate fatigue. Like caffeine, sugar and white-flour carbohydrates, can provide a temporary surge in energy followed by a big low slump. Fibromyalgia patients often experience general hypersensitivity leading to increased sensitivity with blood-sugar highs and lows.

While reducing sugar intake can be beneficial, you may also want to steer clear of

sweet snacks that use aspartame or saccharine as a sweetener. Anything that has a chemical basis should be avoided.

Basically including very alkalising foods into your diet, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, and removing the processed artificial foods, will help reduce inflammation. It’s the inflammation that causes the pain and discomfort. Herbs can also be extremely beneficial when it comes to treating Fibromyalgia, such as: 1. Grape seed extract. The oil in the seeds of wine grapes contains powerful antioxidants and natural antiinflammatory compounds called procyanidins. They may help to inhibit the inflammatory response, which is responsible for muscle pain and soreness in some people.

2. St. John's Wort tincture. This liquid tonic form of St. John's Wort (not capsules or tea) is a common alternative to prescription muscle relaxers. Patients taking prescription antidepressant medication, however, should not use this herb without their doctor's approval.

3. Valerian Taken as a dietary supplement, Valerian may help regulate sleep patterns as well as ease insomnia and anxiety, all common symptoms of Fibromyalgia.

Hulky Bear Hello from your favourite out and about reporter at the Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre, Hulky Bear.

I say this every year how fast time goes, where has the year gone. I am very busy at the moment rolling about playing in the fallen autumn leaves. It’s so much fun. I am actually meant to be looking for some staff to sweep up but hopefully no one will notice just for a while.

I hope you can come along to our winter fayre on the 4th November. If you can you might see this year we are selling a Cat and Rabbit Rescue 2019 calendar. It has some stunning photos of some of my friends here at The Centre. If you would like a copy they are £6 each and will brighten up any wall, just ring 9-4pm during the week.

We have recently held a couple of special cat viewing evenings giving a chance for people to visit The Centre with a view to homing a cat.These are for people who haven’t yet had a home visit and want to see what we do and to answer questions We had such a lot of support and so many of you came along. Lots of my friends found forever homes.Watch out for our evening dates shown on our website or on Facebook. If you have had your home visit then please call us and we can arrange your appointment during an afternoon seven days a week.

As the days get shorter and colder the staff are working on the winter accommodation for our rabbits and guinea-pigs. It is more sheltered away from the elements. It’s meant all the summer accommodation has to be fully cleaned before we store them away in the new buildings for the winter. All the rabbits and guinea-pigs are happy being nice and warm.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed there is no snow Our newly qualified Vet Nurse Sophie has been back working at The Centre for a couple of months now.We are keeping her busy looking after us. Anyone needing a health check forms a queue outside our vet room in the morning.What’s a health check? I thought it was a queue for extra tickles. Quick I am out of here fast! I think I will go and have a lie down in our brand new colourful wheelbarrows kindly donated by Covers of Chichester, it is just the place to relax after a hard day’s reporting. I don’t think anyone will look for me there.

This month allow us to introduce Azrael a 6 year old black female cat. Azrael came to The Centre in March; she had been living outside in the garden as the other cat in the household did not like her. Being a very timid and nervous girl she wouldn’t come inside. At the moment is finding life with us a little stressful, she hisses when you go into her pen.

If you sit down and wait a few minutes Azrael calms down and lets you tickle her head. She does not like the rest of her being touched.

Azrael loves company; when she hears the handlers or staff are coming into her pen she gets very excited and stands at the door waiting, her little face is a picture. She love you to sit and read to her she relaxes completely.We are looking for an experienced owner with no other pets who would be able to give Azrael the time and patience she needs to settle into a home.We think she would be happier living with no young children. If you think you may be able to give Azrael the new home she deserves please give The Centre a call Monday to Friday from 9am-4pm.

£55,900 HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND GRANT TO CELEBRATE THE HISTORY OF KENWOOD The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre in Havant has been awarded a £55,900 National Lottery grant through the Heritage Lottery Fund to record and celebrate the history of the town’s Kenwood factory.

The project will tell the story of the internationally famous brand, which was founded by Kenneth Wood in 1947 in Woking and moved to Havant in 1962.

The Kenwood Chef, which was redesigned in Havant by Kenneth Grange,

has played a major role in British social history, contributing to the transformation

of the nation's post-war domestic life through the production of labour saving devices that helped begin to free women from their traditional roles.

While manufacturing transferred to China in the 1990s, the company’s headquarters remains in New Lane, Havant, and has provided both employment and social opportunities for staff over many years.

The grant will fund the creation of a documentary film featuring interviews with

former and current Kenwood workers and tracing the development of the company over six decades.

Mark Welch, managing director of Kenwood, said: “We are delighted the Spring Arts and Heritage Centre has been awarded this grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The project will highlight the role Kenwood has played in the local community for more than sixty years and enable both current and former workers to record their experiences of working for the company."

Remember, Reflect and Rejoice

Following the recent Havant U3A AGM, members old and new have signed up to their chosen interest groups for another year. Some will have joined new groups for a fresh challenge with many of us staying with our tried and tested favourites.

With autumn ‘the season of mellow fruitfulness’ well and truly here all groups will have met at least once. The ever popular History Group had as its subject ‘The sinking of HMS Royal George’ which happened in August 1782 off Spithead with the loss of 900 lives. Men, women and sixty children drowned as the ship attempted routine maintenance whilst loading provisions. This very moving story was told with slide images and poetry by U3A members Tom and Denise Bennett. The beautiful poetry written by Denise capturing for us the ships last hours.

Reflection and remembrance will also feature at the General Meeting on the 15th November at 2.30pm. when Professor Brad Beaven will give a presentation on

the Social and Cultural Consequences of the First World War in Britain. This will be a very special afternoon coming as it does so close to the 100th Anniversary of the WW1.

For those of you who met some of us this Summer at The Bedhampton Summer Show, St Faiths Flower Festival, the Stride Centre events or have seen the U3A display in Havant Library and not yet made it to Bedhampton Community Centre, this could be a good opportunity to visit, complete a membership form and join us. Francesca spills the beans In a new book, a Hayling Island author has ‘spilled the beans’ about running a beach kiosk.

Life’s a Beach tells the story of a woman recovering from a failed marriage and business who arrives in a south coast resort to take over a defunct kiosk. Nancy used to holiday in ‘Pagley Bay’ as a child, and is drawn there when she sees an online advert for the Kozy Kiosk. The book follows a summer of ups and downs and sometime hilarious situations and misadventures as she learns to cope with the demands of visitors and sometimes very odd regulars.

Biscuit, Russian Reg and Jabber the (beach) Hut. Then the Silver Surfer arrives at the start of a water-sports festival, and Nancy falls in love. Of course, the path of true love never runs smooth, and nor does her first summer at the kiosk.

Although having worked in publishing industry for many years as an editor, Life’s a Beach is Francesca’s first novel: ‘It’s been a very interesting year,’ she says. ‘I spent nearly every day last summer visiting beach kiosks and watching the people running them and their customers, and that involved making copious notes - and drinking countless cups of latte!’

So how many of the characters in her book are based on real people? ‘None,’ says Francesca firmly, but with a hint of a smile. ‘Like all fiction writers, I’ve made up characters based on my observations, but I don’t think anyone could be as weird as some of the people I invented!’

MP backs QA Hospital plans for new A&E department Local MP Alan Mak has backed the plans for a new emergency department at Queen Alexandra Hospital (QA), writing to the Health Secretary Matt Hancock in support of the bid.

It comes after Alan recently met with QA Chief Executive Mark Cubbon to discuss the planned development and meet with some of the doctors and nurses at the hospital.

In his letter, the MP stresses that the emergency department at QA now sees up to 400 patients a day, up a third from 2010.

He said: “The number of patients using the emergency department at QA has substantially increased in recent years and means that it is now operating at a level for which it was never designed.

“Having met some of the hard-working A&E staff, I believe this extra investment will give doctors and nurses the resources they need to deliver first class care. I am fully supportive of the plans and will be lobbying hard in Westminster to make sure that the bid is successful.”
