Postcode Publications WHAT A SUMMER From INJackie WATERLOOVILLE Buckley - Chairman, Waterlooville Events team

Waterlooville in Bloom, School art trail, Bandstand and Summer Fête; it was all happening in Waterlooville this summer.

Businesses across the town participated in Waterlooville in Bloom to brighten up the town centre. Some must have had very green fingers as there were some beautiful pots. The Mayor of Havant Cllr Mrs Shimbart judged the competition and Waterlooville Community Centre won.

Fifteen schools across the area were partnered with fifteen businesses and displayed art work from their students in the partner business. Marvellous opportunity for everyone to see what talented youngsters are in the area and what a marvellous job the schools do to develop such potential.

Excitement grew in the town centre as the well known Band 'Wall of Floyd' performed in the bandstand. The sun shone and the crowds came. Fabulous music that was enjoyed by all.

Then not to be out done there was the Waterlooville Summer Fête held in Jubilee Park. Again the sun shone and the crowds came. Twenty volunteers from the Waterlooville Events team were on duty to ensure the day ran smoothly. Eighty stalls, dog show, arena events, circus skills, laser quest, fun fair, Bubbles... the list is endless.

Everybody enjoyed the day.

There are lots of plans for the coming year.

The South Downs Valley Group Womens Institue Barratt Homes commits to help save Waterlooville wildlife habitats The seven institutes that form

the South Downs Valley Group of WIs held their first ever group craft and produce show on Saturday 2nd September at St Georges Church Hall,Waterlooville.

Mrs Pat Rowling, of Padnell Park WI, thought of the idea of a show during a conversation on a car journey.

Pat was encouraged by Mavis Jones WI Advisor to share this idea and a small show committee was convened with members from Denmead Belles and Horndean and Padnell Park.

Several months later the day of the show arrived.

The show had nineteen classes voted by local judges.These classes included craft, baking, preserves and art.The class ‘Autumn in any medium’ was voted for by those attending the show.

The show was opened by Mr. Brian Kidd, local well respected gardener and former head of parks for Portsmouth City Council.

The Women’s Institute had the pleasure of the attendance of, Deputy Mayor of Havant, Cllr Peter Wade and the Deputy Mayoress, Mrs Janet Wade.

To represent the villages of Denmead and Hambledon the Mayor of Winchester Mr David McLean together with the Mayoress, Mrs Diane McLean.

Some of the exhibits are to be donated to local good causes. Twiddle Mitts, to be

donated to Medicine for Older People at Queen Alexandra Hospital for patients with dementia or delirium.

Waterlooville’s furry and feathered residents are set to receive a boost as five star housebuilder Barratt Homes joins forces with the RSPB to create wildlifefriendly areas at its new development in the town.

Barratt Homes has committed to building wildlifefriendly habitats at all its new developments to help support wildlife in the surrounding area and Berewood Heath in Waterlooville is the latest new community to benefit.The commitment comes with the hope that it will boost biodiversity as the country’s urban wildlife struggles. According to recent figures from the RSPB the UK has lost a third of its hedgehog population since 2003 and its house sparrow population has declined by 60 per cent since the 1970s.

Tim Hill, managing director of Barratt Homes in the area, said: “Contributing to the communities we work in is important to us and that’s not just limited to our two-legged neighbours.We are delighted to be working with the RSPB to develop new habitats for animals such as birds, hedgehogs and frogs

around our developments and hope the contribution will improve the well-being of our nearby feathered friends.”

The scheme will also see Barratt Homes raise employee awareness of wildlife-friendly practice across its sites and supply chain nationally.

Work has started on Berewood Heath, which will feature a range of two, three and four bedroom homes.

Melanie and Bear Country Melanie was recently in Canada with the sole aim of seeing Grizzly bears. "I saw a lot of bears which was amazing.

I also did a lot of hiking. And when hiking in “bear country” you learn very quickly that the aim of the game is to avoid the bears!

Then I got the Noro virus. This is, apparently, very common. Due to the fact that most of the people you meet (tourists) have been on cruise ships. And, as it turns out I must have encountered a lot of people who had recently travelled on HMS Sickness & Diarrhoea!

The problem was that the virus did not strike until I was half way through a long hike in bear country.

We were far enough along the hike to need to make it to the end rather than turn back because I was vomiting.

I was also told that it is not a good idea to stop too long to do what “nature intended” because of the bears...fabulous!

The long and the short of it is I survived the hike (hurrah!) and was not attacked by a bear (phew!).

I was advised to get checked out in the Vancouver equivalent of A&E following the ordeal and then to see my own GP when I got home.

This is the point of my article…

There are adjectives that I would use to describe my experience of healthcare in Vancouver.

They would include: • quick, • painless, • efficient, • clean, • pleasant.

I actually felt as though people were sympathetic with my feeling quite unwell. And felt that they wanted to make me better.

I was thoroughly checked over, rehydrated and sent on my way with a very pleasant doctor telling me that if I felt unwell again that I should hurry back and they would get it all sorted.

Then I came home.

On advice I attempt to make an appointment with my GP. First I had to speak to the receptionist.

She is not a nurse. I know because I ask. The receptionist has no medical training at all. Yet I am advised that she would be providing “triage”.

Frankly she was more difficult to “get through” than the 5.5km hike with the Noro virus and the threat of being attacked by a Grizzly bear!

Eventually after a lot of “discussion” and my sending an e-mail of the discharge summary from the Hospital, I was allowed an appointment. With the nurse, week after next!

I pointed out that I was advised to see a GP. I was told that if that was the case I should ring back at an allotted time when they would see what appointments they had within the next “slot” which spans the following two weeks. I was offered the choice of registering online because sometimes you can get a quicker appointment that way….perhaps like a special offer when you buy online from Amazon?

Frankly, I would rather take my chances with the bears…

Now, my situation was not serious. I have been somewhat “tongue in cheek”.

But what if it had been serious?

I am not elderly, vulnerable, hard of hearing or in any way disabled.

What would be the case if I was?

Would the receptionist attempt to “triage” me?

Trying to make an appointment to see a GP is not simple. It is challenging and often the receptionists seem to be intimidating and unhelpful.

People often give up preferring to ignore health issues than get them dealt with because of problems and difficulties just like this!

I have acted for many clients who have experienced ongoing health issues which have been ignored, delayed or in extreme cases, misdiagnosed by their GP. "

Hayling Island U3A has been awarded a National Lottery grant for a project to recall the social history of the Island from 1919 through to 1946.

The project will review the 1920’s, the life of people living on the Island during that time, their work and play and how the depression affected their lives and local employment prospects.

During the following decade there were hopes of better things to come and development of the Island to meet the needs of the holiday maker and day tripper.This period of expansion was dashed by the threat of war, which was declared in 1939.The early 1940’s changed the complexion of the Island, and sadly once again Hayling families experienced the loss of loved ones and lived in fear of aerial attack.

If your family or relatives lived on Hayling Island during any part of this period of history, we would be pleased to hear your stories, and are particularly keen to make contact with families who lost loved ones during WW2, as we hope to include montages of each man or woman who gave their lives in the service of their Country, and of the many civilians whose lives were lost through air attacks.

Many readers may recall that in the book ‘Hayling Island Life and Times 1914-1919’ which was written by members of U3A, we included montages of all the Hayling men who lost their lives.

CRAFT BEERS - Enjoy your Local Ales UK v. USA

The craft beer movement continues to grow both in the UK and the USA. Here in Britain we have around 1,655 craft breweries whilst in the USA there are over 5,000 breweries. Up until the 1960’s beer production in the UK was mainly in the hands of six big brewers; Courage, Scottish & Newcastle, Bass Charrington, Allied (Ind Coope), Whitbread and Watney Mann.

These big firms tended to buy up small local breweries and then close them down. The breweries also owned most of the pubs and wholesalers therefore making it difficult for any new brewer to enter the market.

Very slowly, starting in the 1970’s a number of small, independent breweries began to open in the UK. This trend continued throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s but really took off after 2005. About half of all breweries in the UK have opened in the last 10 years. A similar thing happened in the USA when a small number of breweries opened in the 1970’s. This was an attempt to offer American drinkers something different from the bland industrially produced lager made by the big brewers.

Several American craft brewers had visited the UK, Belgium and Germany and returned home wanting to recreate the flavoursome beers they had tried in Europe.

The craft beer revolution took off in the USA and has now been exported to many countries in the world. Places such as Spain and Italy which used to be associated with wine now have a thriving craft beer scene and you can even buy their beers in the UK. I thought it might be interesting to compare the beers of a local craft brewer with the brews from an American craft brewer. Coincidentally, I was contacted by Bedlam Brewery, Sussex and Hardywood Brewery,Virginia USA who both offered me some samples of their beers. Bedlam are based at Albourne which is about 10 miles north of Brighton. They grow their own

hops and offer tours of the brewery by appointment. https://bedlambrewery.co.uk/ Hardywood Brewery are based in Richmond,Virginia and opened in 2010. This is a large city in the eastern part of the USA and is about 110 miles south of Washington DC. They have their own taproom and also offer brewery tours by appointment. They have recently started to export their beer to the UK. https://hardywood.com/ Here are my tasting notes on a selection of beers from Bedlam and Hardywood:

Bitter, Golden Ale, India Pale Ale and perhaps a stout/porter. Both Bedlam and Hardywood exemplify the quality driven craft approach of up and coming small breweries.

BEER & FOOD PAIRING

Hardywood Virgindian Pale Ale 5.3% abv.

This is Hardywood’s own take on India Pale Ale which they have christened Virgindian Pale Ale. It pours a gold colour with a grapefruity/tropical fruit aroma and has a good citrus flavour. It is brewed with Virginia grown hops and barley.

Try this beer with Chinese food.

Bedlam Pilsner 4.2% abv.

Very few British craft breweries offer a Pilsner or Pale Lager. This beer pours a gold colour with a slightly citrus aroma. It has a dry clean biscuity taste and is far removed from the bland lagers offered in most pubs.

It is hopped with Saaz and Tettnanger hops.

This is a beer to sip on a sunny day.

Bedlam Porter 5% abv.

This is a dark brown ale with a roasted aroma. There is plenty of coffee and chocolate flavour in this traditional beer. It made of Pale, Crystal, Brown and Chocolate malted barley and hopped with Fuggles and Goldings hops.

This would go well with BBQ meats.

Bedlam Pale Ale 4.8% abv.

A dark gold coloured beer with a fruity aroma. Complex taste with blackcurrant, raspberry and citrus flavours. The beer is hopped with UK grown Cascade hops. I think this would complement Asian foods.

Bedlam also offer Golden Ale, India Pale Ale (IPA), Best Bitter and American Pale Ale. Their beers are available in bottles, cask or keg. Bedlam beers are available at around 300 different pubs in London and the South East. Coincidentally there is also a Bedlam Brewery in Virginia, USA. This is a small brew pub in the town of Staunton which is about 100 miles NW of Richmond.

Hardywood German style Pilsner 5.2% abv.

This pale golden beer has biscuity taste and should be enjoyed by sipping slowly as it is quite a bit stronger than most British session lagers. This fine beer is made with European Pilsner malt and German noble hops. I would drink this with a plate of tapas.

Hardywood Singel Belgian style Blonde Ale 6.2% abv.

Many American brewers turn to Europe for inspiration and in this case it is to the pale and blonde ales of Belgium that Hardywood seek to emulate. This golden ale has a bready aroma and a yeasty, tropical fruit taste. This is a strong beer which I would enjoy after a meal, perhaps with some cheese.

The above Hardywood beers are available in the UK in 12 oz. bottles. If you visit the USA you can try their other beers which include; Pale Ale, Cream Ale, Pumpkin beer, Raspberry Ale, Peach Ale and a range of barrel conditioned beers.

I don’t think there is a lot to choose between British and American craft beers.

Generally speaking US beers are stronger as they don’t have the session drinking culture that we have where people drink several pints in a pub. In the US most beer is consumed at home and is sold in 12 oz. bottles and cans. American brewers, who lack indigenous styles of beer often produce challenging versions of European styles of beer which can be stronger and more fully flavoured than the original beers. Here in the UK most brewers will be happy to produce

I was recently a guest of the Brewers Association which is an American craft beer trade organisation. They held a food and US beer pairing dinner at a London restaurant to which many of Britain’s beer writers were invited. We were able to sample beers by leading craft brewers including: Sierra Nevada, Track 7, Coronado, Hardywood, Great Divide, Pfreim, Maui, Saugatuck, Port City and Wormtown. The beer chosen to accompany the main course of smoked pork was Melange a Trois by Nebraska Brewing.

This is a massive 11.3% abv. Belgian-Style Blonde Ale which has been matured for six months in French Oak Chardonnay wine barrels. This beer has a fascinating dry, sweet, and wine-like character. Normally I would not want to drink such a strong beer with a main course but this beer was so characterful that it seemed to go down really well. Barrel-aged and sour beers are now very popular in the USA and some British brewers also offer this style which originates in Belgium.

I feel that beer is much more forgiving than wine when it comes to pairing with food. Generally speaking one should choose a beer which entire compliments or contrasts with the food. A rich dark stout would complement a beef casserole and citrusy Pale Ale would go well with spicy food. Next time you go beer shopping look out for British and American craft beers and try to choose beers which will go well with meals that you are planning to cook.

THE GREAT PO7 & PO8 PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION Postcode Publications ran the Competition for the first time over several months, offering an opportunity for local photographers to submit entries under a number of categories.

The very successful Competition attracted 74 entries from 23 competitors.

Postcode Publications King of Keys cuts a Diamond Sir John Timpson supports 60 years of Rotary in Havant Hampshire Sir John Timpson joined the President of Havant Rotary Jenny Edgell to celebrate Havant Rotary Club’s Diamond Charter Dinner.

Jenny met Sir John over fifty years ago when they were both Students. Jenny said “I wrote to Sir John a while ago to invite him to speak after dinner. I am so impressed by his generosity in giving up his time to join us at this important occasion. The ethics of Timpson’s business sit well with the Rotary ethos.”

Sir John is CEO of Timpson’s the wellknown shoe mending and key cutting business and his career is remarkable in its ethical approach to business. It is not a C.V., but personality in interview that determines your suitability to work for Timpson’s; whether you have a Prison Record or are a graduate you are treated with the same respect and encouraged to take the initiative. One of many business books, written by Sir John, tells the story of ‘Upside Down Management’ which is a guiding principle of Timpson’s business success.

most of the local businesses. It was strictly a ‘Gentlemen Only’ lunch club. “The members list in 1957 reads like a ‘Who’s Who’ of local long-gone businesses.”

In 60 years, Havant Rotary has more than doubled its number of members; raised at least £100,000 from the good people of Havant and supported many causes both local and abroad. We have had in the region of 10,000 meetings; eaten nearly 3000 meals together in friendship and even visited India, to assist in the Rotary End Polio Now vaccination project.

There have been great changes in Havant Rotary during the 60 years, most notably the inclusion of Women as Rotarians.

Jenny said “It was 1999 before Havant admitted women and I was the first! Today there are 12 of us, all very active members brimming with ideas and enthusiasm.”

HAVANT BOROUGH TALKING NEWSPAPER Volunteer Tony hangs up his microphone

At Havant Borough Talking Newspaper, listeners and volunteers alike were saddened to learn that Tony Doye, a stalwart of the charity for many years, had decided to retire.

Tony joined the Talking Newspaper in 1994 and became a firm favourite amongst listeners for his warm and friendly voice. In fact, it was not unusual for listeners to say that to hear Tony was like welcoming a friend into their home.

In his last recording, Tony was interviewed by Elizabeth White, another reader and friend of long standing, who asked him whether his involvement in amateur dramatics had helped him develop his warm and impeccable style. Ever humble, Tony said that the process of delivering lines had not come automatically to him. He had had to learn this. Initially, he had played a number of comedy roles where timing and delivery was so important because ‘if you didn’t get a laugh, then you had failed’. He felt that this experience had definitely helped him when recording the Talking Newspaper.

Apart from being a reader from his earliest days with the charity, Tony also served on committee and for many years worked with volunteer, Stella Capp, to produce the quarterly magazine, Look Hear.

In summing up his time with the Talking Newspaper, Tony said it was the people that he would miss the most. He felt that the volunteers he had worked with over the

years and the listeners he had had the good fortune to meet were all ‘such lovely people’, and he particularly enjoyed the social gatherings where listeners and volunteers had joined together. He said they were ‘simply splendid’.

Local Businesses join Havant Rotary to help ‘YOUNG CARERS’

Sixteen youngsters between the ages of 9 and 16 years, who are all ‘young carers’ of family members, enjoyed a day out at the seaside at Hayling Island.

Three Hayling Businesses joined Havant Rotary for the afternoon’s fun.

Havant Rotarian Harry Wilkinson arranged fellow Rotarians to transport the youngsters to Eastoke.

There, the manager of the Coastguard Café Caroline Clark sponsored a fish and chip feast, with coke and lemonade.

Then Bob Haddock of the Hayling Light Railway sponsored a ride on the train to Beachlands.

The Beachlands Management sponsored

all the rides and so all the fun of the fair was greatly enjoyed by the young carers.

Rotarian Harry Wilkinson said; “To see the young people relaxing with such wide smiles on their faces was very rewarding” The whole afternoon was very much appreciated by the carers and their coordinators.

With Steve Rackett on his re-arranged Big Challenge Walk, numbers were down a bit with seven members attending Round 22 and the final round of the Havant Lakes Trophy. The sun smiled on everyone but the fish gods only smiled on two members on Sunday with West Lake at her most fickle.

Still, all good things come to those who wait, and Dave, fishing in his 18th match/meeting this year pulled off his first win with just one fish, a lovely 8 lb 3 oz mirror which fell to a washed out white boilie and was a worthy winner. The only other member to catch was John Forster who float fished 2 maggots over ground bait and loose fed 2mm krill pellets which produced a steady stream of 9 small Rudd, a couple of eels and finally a bonus 2 lb 1 oz

bream, to take second place. As always happens, someone gets a run after the match had ended, this time it was Jan H’s turn, but sadly she couldn’t get the fish to the net.

High Level of Interest In Cycling at Emsworth Show This was the first time that Portsmouth CTC has had a stall at the Emsworth Show which was a much bigger event than the previous ones on Hayling Island and previously at Havant (Havant Goes Greener) which altogether has spanned a 6 year period so far.

So there was a little nervous tension as we set up and prepared the stall.

We needn’t have worried, the show was very well organised and once the public had been let in at 10.30 all went very smoothly with large crowds and a steady stream of visitors to the stall. The Turbo Challenge, where riders pedal from a standing start for 1 minute to see how far they can travel, was very popular with a record number of at least 71 riders (many having repeat rides to try and better their score). Unusually the competition was

dominated by the adult male riders with 32 rides on the ‘big’ bike.A fierce contest ensued with at first one young man getting over 1000 metres (equivalent to 60kph) followed by 5 more exceeding this milestone, with the eventual Leader Board top position standing at an amazing 1120 metres from Will Gibson. On all previous Turbo Challenges no one had exceeded the 1000 metre mark, so this was an all time record, and there was much speculation to explain this outstanding result. One theory was that the very warm sunny weather resulted in thinner air and that had lessened the braking effect of the turbo air brake.The other results were also impressive; 9 lady riders with the best, Clare, achieving a top distance of 860 meters; and on the child’s bike we had 13 girls, the top being Daisy's excellent 626 meters, and

17 boys, with a very good top score of 680 meters from Daisy.

As usual the attraction of the Turbo Challenge draws in many cyclists and would-be cyclists so there were many chats about cycling in general and Portsmouth CTC in particular with the A6 flyer, created by Wilf, being handed out to all who showed an interest.

It was encouraging and very satisfying to see the significant level of interest shown in cycling by good proportion of the large crowd of Emsworth Show visitors.All in all a great day and well worth all the effort put in by the Portsmouth CTC team.

SOUTH HANTS VOLLEYBALL CLUB CELEBRATES AS IT IS NAMED ‘CLUB OF THE YEAR 2017’ BY VOLLEYBALL ENGLAND From Beverley Cooper

It is said that from a small seed a mighty trunk may grow, an image that captures perfectly the development of Waterlooville’s South Hants Volleyball Club. Its metaphoric seed was sown in 2002 when 8 players came together with a simple vision: to facilitate and support anyone who wanted to participate in volleyball at all levels.

Fifteen years on the club has gone from strength to strength, now boasting over 80 members between the ages of 10 and 60+ and an impressive array of volleyball opportunities. From a thriving Junior satellite club, through successful Local, County and National League squads, to the recent addition of a Sitting section the club is able to provide something for everyone, irrespective of age, disability, gender or experience.

Those years of patient and careful nurturing have resulted in South Hants being named ‘Club of the Year‘ at the Volleyball England Annual Awards 2017, an accolade of which it is rightly very proud. Success has not

happened overnight, however, and would not have been possible at all if not for the unflagging commitment and energy of the many volunteers that have passed through the club’s doors. A programme of workforce development has yielded ten qualified coaches and three referees, with more planned to follow, and their dedication has led to some notable achievements.

Highlights from last season alone include: promotion for the ladies to National League Division 2 following a fantastic season where they were crowned champions of Division 3SW, losing just one of twenty matches; the Sitting Volleyball team attained its best ever finish in the Grand Prix series, finishing 3rd overall while also taking 2nd place in the Sitting Volleyball Cup; the U14 girls team were runners-up at the Ashcombe Tournament 2017; and the Men’s team won the Hampshire Volleyball Association’s Grand Prix series.

In the same period a number of individuals have also been recognised for their commitment to the sport, with two members of the junior team being invited onto the Volleyball England talent pathway, a member of the sitting team won Senior Disability Sportsperson of the Year at the local council sports awards, while in 2015 the club was awarded Satellite Club of the Year for the South East of England, which included clubs across a range of sports. It is the generosity and enthusiasm of the volunteers, who give their time week in

week out so that others may benefit that best encapsulates the spirit of South Hants and this, too, has been recognised through local, regional and Volleyball England awards.

The club has a strong focus on community engagement and in the last year that same army of volunteers has worked hard to fly the flag for volleyball. Go Spike! sessions at local leisure facilities and within club sessions have proved particularly popular and have generated new players as have the sitting volleyball taster sessions that have been delivered in numerous schools and colleges to nearly 500 students.

In addition to the player-facing workforce, there are also people working assiduously behind the scenes, ensuring the club’s governance arrangements are fit for purpose, whether that relates to policies concerning safeguarding, equality and diversity, first aid training and so on. There is a real sense of co-operation and camaraderie that runs like a golden thread through the club together, knitting everyone together into what can be described as a happy, successful club.

Running alongside the serious volleyball aspect of the club there is a fun, social dimension. Nights out, summer volleyball tournaments, ski trips, BBQs etc. have led to many lifelong friendships and even several marriages which seem to be ensuring the future of the club as the baby count has now reached double figures.

South Hants is a club in the ascendency and yet, despite the intervening years, it has remained steadfastly faithful to its core tenet: to facilitate and support anyone who wants to participate in volleyball at all levels.

Cycling Clinic Mike Skiffins, Portsmouth CTC Q My bike has straight handlebars, and when I ride for more than a few miles my hands start to tingle. If I continue it can start to get quite uncomfortable. Is there something wrong with the bike?

A This is quite common, and I found the same problem when I joined the club and started riding slightly further than was normal for me.

It is caused when the vibrations from the road travel straight up to the handlebars and squash the nerves in your hand a bit.

With 'straights' it is normal to ride with the heel of your hand on the actual bar grips and your fingers lightly on the brake levers. In this position the bar grips press between the two pads on your hand by the thumb and the little finger, and this is just where the nerves go.

To reduce this pressure you can try not to lean on the bars but support yourself by your back muscles, and let your arms flex at the elbows. Stiff arms carry the vibrations.

Raising the handlebars can help you to

straighten up.You can also try changing your hold by wrapping your fingers round the bar except for the first two on the brake levers.

This rotates your hand and lets the pressure pads on your hand do the work.

So much for what you can do for nothing !

Your handlebar grips may be simple hard rubber tubes, in which case new grips that are a bit spongy and shaped to fit a hand, will help a bit.

Many cyclists wear fingerless gloves during the Summer, with padded areas on the palm. With Winter coming up you will find proper gloves with fingers and padding a

great benefit. Both types of glove are readily available and don't need to be very expensive.

Changing your hold, as mentioned earlier, is helpful but there are not too many ways you can hold a steel tube, in effect.You may see bikes with 'horns' sticking up at the ends of the bars. These give the rider a totally different hold.Your wrist will be rotated 90 degrees, and your weight will be shifted off your hands a lot. The only disadvantage is that you will not be able to rest any fingers on the brake levers, but they are not far away, and anyway it is not necessary to hold the brakes all the time.

Most riders find that they don't need horns, but it becomes a matter of personal taste.

Finally, as with most activity related discomforts, once you have made sure you are not doing things wrongly, your body will get used to it, and the problem will pretty well go away.

I do not recommend that you go out and spend a lot on accessories all at once, try one thing at a time.

To sum up: • ease the weight off your hands from time to time by sitting up straight • change the way you hold the grips • get padded gloves • get padded rubber grips • get 'horns' fitted • Get used to it!

Don’t stop Wining

Christmas Wines Under £10 It’s all too easy to go overboard on spending during the festive period. The kids want the latest action figures, the teenagers want the latest gadgets while Dad is happy with the festive socks, Christmas seems to get more and more expensive each year.

So, this year I have decided to show you a range of wines which I stock that have both the quality, which is important at Christmas, but still won’t break the bank.

Some budget wines can taste, well like budget wines and although you may think you are getting a bargain, the wine itself is far from decent. Some big brand names are mass produced with the grapes coming from many different areas and sources. This can lead to inconsistency in the quality in the grapes and a lack of care and attention in the wine making practices. Ask any wine expert; you can’t make good wine from bad grapes. Smaller producers are the opposite. They know exactly where the grapes come from giving them more control on the growing, and ultimately more care and attention from grape to bottle.

‘Wine to open the pressies with’ – Christmas morning is traditionally fizz time, or more commonly Bucks Fizz time. I have gone for a Prosecco Frizzante (less fizzy) £8.99 – loads of gorgeous dry apple fruit with gentle bubbles and a lingering finish.

Aperitif time – Generally something softer and lighter is the preference here so

try my Vila Regia Blanco from the Douro in Portugal, £7.99. A lovely fresh and rounded white with loads of fruit on the finish. Its soft and fruity and not over powering on the alcohol front (12%).

Starter time – Whether you are having a fishy starter or something like pate or light meat, again go for something lighter. For fishy starters I have a lively white from the South West of France. Heritage Blanc £7.99 is a crisper white but with a lovely aromatic finish. This would also pair nicely with a ham based starter.

Main course –If you are staying traditional and going for Turkey you need a white but something with a little more body and less acidity. Grapes like Viognier, Vermentino, Marsanne have more tropical fruit so I have Les Vignes de L’Eglise Vermentino £8.99 from the Languedoc.

Lots of peachy characters jump out of the glass. If you are having something like duck or goose then try Il Faggio Montepulciano from Italy £9.69. Full bodied yet a wonderful elegance

with loads of flavour.

For the cheese board go for a red with body and a bit of tannin balanced with a bit of fruit. Spitting Spider Shiraz from Australia at £9.99 has just that. Red berry fruit with balanced tannin with a hint of spice.

Spinach roulade with a chestnut mushroom filling served with a spicy tomato sauce This is a deliciously light dish which can be a starter or main course and will be sure to impress your guests. Not only is it light in taste but it is light in calories too! Although this recipe is a vegetarian version it is easy to make it a meat version by adding some chopped cooked chicken to the filling.

To turn it into a more festive dish just add some chopped walnuts and cranberries to the mushroom filling whether you choose to add the chicken or not.

The tomato sauce does not have to be spicy and can be turned into a more substantial sauce too. Stir fried peppers and courgettes make a tasty vegetarian option. Prawns can be added along with a dash of white wine for fish lovers.

The two sauce recipes can be also used and enjoyed with pasta, rice or a baked potato.

For more information go to; www.foodfiendexp.com Ingredients 4 large eggs ½ tsp nutmeg 250 fresh spinach or frozen chopped 150g milk Pepper and salt 250 g chestnut mushrooms 2 tbsp plain white flour 2 cloves garlic 50 g butter 50 g mature grated cheddar 1 tin chopped tomatoes 1 large onion 1 tbsp olive oil ½ tsp chilli powder (optional) ½ tsp dry basil or small handful of fresh basil leaves finely chopped Method 1. Chop onion roughly and finely chop garlic cloves.

2. Heat non-stick sauce pan with olive oil on medium heat.

3. Cook onion until they start to brown then add garlic and cook for a further minute.Add tin of chopped tomatoes. Bring to a simmer then add chilli powder along with dry basil or fresh.

Cook on heat for a further 10 minutes 4. Line a 30 cm by 24 cm baking tray with grease proof paper. Heat fan oven to 180 degrees.

5. Wash and slice the chestnut mushrooms.

6. Defrost frozen spinach in a microwave on low for 5 minutes, stir mid-way. Finely chop fresh spinach and cook in a glass dish for 5 minutes on high pausing midway through to stir well.

Strain using a spoon to press extra water out.

Place the prepared spinach in a large mixing bowl.

7. Separate the egg yolks from the egg white putting them in another mixing bowl.Add the yolks to the chopped spinach. Mix well and season with pepper salt and nutmeg.

8. Beat egg whites until they resemble meringue and hold their shape.

9. Fold the egg whites into the spinach mixture a little at a time until all incorporated.

Pour the mixture carefully into the lined baking tray and spread evenly.

Cook in the middle of the oven for 10 to 12 minutes until golden brown and springy to the touch. Remove from the oven.

Melt butter in a small non-stick saucepan.

Add the sliced mushrooms. Cook for two minutes until the mixed mushrooms start to soften.Add the plain flour and stir well. Cook for two minutes and turn heat off. Slowly add the milk stirring the mushroom mixture well.

Turn the heat to medium and cook the mixture until it starts to thicken and boil.Add grated cheese and stir well.

Peel the greaseproof paper away from the spinach roulade. Spread the mushroom filling over the entire roulade and then gently roll the roulade starting at one end. Carefully slice to desired size. Serve with hot tomato sauce.

Everyone had a good time either relaxing or playing Giant Dominoes, Boule, Smite or swing ball.

What a talented lot the Purbrook Horticultural Society members are! The 77th Annual Show held at Crookhorn College in Waterlooville showcased the imagination, wit and talent of the exhibitors in a varied range of classes.

The Handicraft section displayed items as diverse as a knitted cake; crafted Hedgehogs; colourful evocative photography; intricate stitch work; delicate jewellery and a bowl with individual Fruit crafted out of Breeze blocks.The Floral Art group pulled out all the stops to provide a record breaking 30 exhibits from the petite to the large, some bright and breezy others using a more subtle palette, giving something for everyone to admire.The stalls selling Plants; preserves; Cakes and Books were enhanced this year by stands depicting the wonders of Bee Keeping [so topical] and the delights of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife showing what important work they do in the region.The Refreshments area provided a welcome break and a chance to catch up with friends old and new and to provide the fuel required to tackle another promenade of the Show.

Thoughts are now focused on the Pumpkin evening and Quiz and the ever popular Spring Show (See details in What’s On pages.)

We hope you found our tips and exercises for shoulder pain (rotator cuff impingement) in our last article useful.

Today we will be offering some advice, exercises and stretches which are good for those suffering with Patellofemoral pain syndrome (knee pain). Runners, cyclists, sailors, ramblers and people taking up new sports and activities plus many more suffer from this problem. Most people with this problem have some pain when walking up and/or down stairs.

Knee pain can have many root causes, such as cartilage tears, osteoarthritis, tendon and ligament sprains. We are going to give you exercises which will help with knee pain due to muscle imbalance which then leads

to poor tracking of your knee cap (Patella).

Good day everyone from your out and about reporter Hulky Bear from the Cat and Rabbit Rescue.

I have been sitting chilling out this morning on my scratching post in my garden room where I live with the other cats here thinking of what I can tell you about this month.

Things haven't been quiet at the centre. I have been busy arranging to help one of our recently homed cats that went missing a few days after arriving at his new home. I should begin at the start of this story. Last year we had a call from a member of the public that a cat and kittens had been seen at an industrial estate. Mum was so desperate to feed her kittens she was bringing them the bread rolls she found in the dustbin. We rescued them and they came to the centre.

The kittens were very nervous and didn't know the staff were trying to be kind to them. As they grew up they became more confident and almost a year later we found them a home together. Off they went a couple of days later we had a phone call one of the kittens (now a fully grown cat) had escaped out of a tiny opening in the window.

I sprang into, action organising search parties, getting teams of people to put up posters. His sister was missing him so much she came back to the centre. For 6 long weeks we went on patrol. No sightings no news. We were almost ready to think he was lost forever. Then a phone call, a sighting of a cat that fitted his description. Could it be him? I sent two of my staff to look for him.

They came back with news it was him but he was so frightened they couldn't catch him, even with special pilchard dinner. A kind lady whose cat Charlie had made friends with agreed to help us and managed to get him to come into her house. I sent staff to collect him and we reunited him with his sister who told him off and then gave him a big hug. Now all we need is a home for them.

PS: We have a Viewing Day Saturday 28th October 12-2pm. Our Halloween black cat (or any other colour) special viewing.Viewing days are non-appointment days so people thinking of adopting a cat can pop along. Otherwise we re-home 7 days a week by appointment only.

We would like you to meet Apple Fries a one and a half year old female rabbit.

Apple Fries has been at the centre since November 2016 after the rabbit rescue centre she was living at had to close down.

After living in 2 rescue centres we would love her to find a loving home and a friend to bond with. She does have a medical issue with her kidneys which doesn’t worry her at the moment. As time moves on it may affect her life expectancy but hopefully not. She has a monthly injection here at the centre which she would come back for as well as any issues with her kidneys would be looked after by the vet at the centre. We can tell you further details if you are interested.

Apple Fries has lots of personality and sometimes a bit of attitude but she does love a cuddle and a stroke. She is looking for a loving home with another male rabbit for company. If you have a single male neutered rabbit who would like a friend we can carry out the bonding process at the centre.

FLYING THE FLAG FOR ANIMALS From Margaret Turner (Hayling Island RSPCA Support Group)

The annual Flag Collection Days on 25th and 26th September were hugely successful and £727 was raised for The Stubbington Ark Animal Shelter.

Thank you very much to everybody who stopped at our volunteers blue collection tins and gave so generously.

We are grateful to Hayling Hardware,The Cooperative in Elm Grove, Lloyds Pharmacy in West Town, Hayling Fruiterers and the No 1 Shop in Mengham who welcomed our volunteers to collect in front of their premises.

As always, we are indebted to Mr Patel of The News Boutique in Mengham who very kindly permitted us to set up a table-top sale in front of his shop.

The Stubbington Ark provides shelter, love and care for all manner of animals: domestic, wildlife, farm stock and exotics.

So far in 2017 we have re-homed 161 dogs, 344 cats, 60 rabbits and 34 miscellaneous. We have taken in 429 wildlife and been able to release 71.

Four feral cats have been released back into the wild and 105 dogs, 166 cats, 47 rabbits and 22 miscellaneous animals have been neutered.

Without your continuous support and kind donations not a single animal could have been helped. Therefore, on behalf of all the resident animals THANKYOU. Our next fund raising event will be a special coffee morning on Saturday 25th November at the URC hall. We are looking forward to seeing you there.

From Orphan to Mayor in easy stages

The life story of Cllr Ken Smith

Episode One The War and Uncle Charles I have no memory of where I was born (although I know it was in Croydon, south London, on June 7, 1940).World War II was raging and although I was unaware of it, I was about to be orphaned, which explains why I also have no recollections of my parents except from the few photos that survive.

I know very little at all about my father’s family. On my mother’s side, however, I know a lot more. My maternal grandfather was a printer in Fleet Street; his name – Charles Baxter Smith.

He married an Elizabeth Key-Herbert and between them they had eight children.Two Sons and six daughters Their eldest son was Reginald Charles Thomas Baxter Smith. Born May 7, 1900, he was known as ‘Reggie’ to his siblings but to me he was to become my all-important Uncle Charles; but more of that later.

My grandparents’ second son was called Maurice. He married Joan and had three children. Maurice joined the Army and served in Burma during WWII. He was taken prisoner by the Japanese and suffered poor health for the remainder of his life. He died in 1965.

Their first daughter was called May. She married Maurice Brett and lived in the family home of 47 Thornlaw Road,West Norwood, South London until 1965.They had two children, Timothy and Zena. Zena married an American serviceman and moved with him to America.

They had two daughters, Sue and Sally. Eventually May went to live with Zena’s family in North Carolina where she died in 1996. Following granddaughter Sue’s marriage to Charlie, a Sergeant Major in the US Army, she moved to Sparta in the Blue Ridge Mountains, whilst granddaughter Sally married Tony who served in the US Airforce. Sally and Tony moved to California where he became a Lt Colonel before he retired..

Their youngest daughter was my mother, Ivy Patricia Smith. She married my dad, Leslie Williams, in 1937 and they subsequently had Alan, my older brother, my younger brother Ronnie and me.

My mother, who was always known as ‘Pat’ by the family, died suddenly one Sunday morning following complications during the birth of my younger brother, Ronnie; that was in March 1942.Worse was to follow. Shortly after her death my father died from obscure causes but I’ve little doubt that the blow of losing his wife must have played a part.

We three boys were dispatched to an orphanage in Tring where Ronnie promptly succumbed to an epidemic which struck the institution and he died; he was buried alongside Mum and Dad in South Croydon Cemetery.

I was rescued by my Uncle Charles who became my Guardian. I spent my formative years in a peripatetic existence, moving from one hotel or public house to another, dining in restaurants and attending various schools. I had no choice in the matter. It was Uncle Charles’ calling.

pub landlord.A caricature I have of him places him firmly in the upper echelons of his profession, more a member of the establishment than your average pub licensee – an image endorsed by the fact that before the War he was a manager in both the Dorchester and Mayfair hotels in London.Anyway, it was thanks to him that I matured pretty quickly, but also that I left school without a single qualification.

It was also because of Uncle Charles that my adopted surname is ‘Smith’ (my mother’s maiden name) and not ‘Williams’, my father’s family name.

In all I went to many schools.The first was St Mary’s Convent school which I regularly ran away from because I didn’t like the nuns! Next I was sent to Mount Radford, a private school, but then Uncle Charles had to remove me in 1952 for pecuniary reasons – he ran short of money!

I then went to many schools and ended up at

Albury Manor, at Merstham, near Redhill, and I ended up in what was called the grammar stream.Whatever educational talent I had was never to be tested because once more Charles was posted to a new establishment and I left school in 1955 for the last time without, as I’ve already said, a single qualification to my name.

The years I spent with Uncle Charles living in all those pubs and hotels – including from 1959 to 1962 the famous Star & Garter Hotel at Richmond – at least gave me an ambition to do well. Charles was what you could call a colourful character, almost cosmopolitan.Whilst living with him I’d look around me and think: “I’ve got to make something of my life because I want to go on living like this”, I need to be successful’.Yes, I decided, I had really fallen on my feet when I was effectively adopted by Uncle Charles.

At some stage I found I had an ‘Aunt

Barbara’. She was Charles’ partner at a time when he was put in charge of the Bell Hotel, Norwich in 1943.The next year he was asked to go to Exeter to run the London Inn. It was still war-time and Exeter was an important target for the Luftwaffe (the London Inn was virtually an island surrounded by bombed-out buildings).

For that reason it was decided that I should be ‘evacuated’ with Barbara to Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire, where she’d been appointed manager of the very nice Royal Hotel. For a while she was like a mum to me. She had no children of her own and I don’t think she’d ever been married.

When the War was nearly over it was considered safe enough for me to re-join Uncle Charles in Exeter.

After the War, in 1947, Charles married another lady called Kay (Kathleen). Ultimately, Charles ended up running various London businesses until he retired to the family home at 47 Thornlaw Road in 1965. He died in 1987, Kathleen in 1992.

I remember watching the steam trains pull into Exeter Central, especially the exciting ‘Battle of Britain’ class locos.

Despite moving home so frequently I managed to make friends here and there.They included Christopher whose parents owned a greengrocer’s in Cowick Street. I was to meet Chris again years later when we lived at the Lakers Hotel in Redhill (1954-56).

Another friend, Richard, lived in a lovely house near the top of Heavitree Hill on the outskirts of Exeter. I spent many a happy hour with his family in their garden, going for rides in his mum’s Morris 8 convertible and attending Sunday school with him.

There was no question of taking holidays with a pub landlord as a guardian, but I do remember once going with some aunts to a caravan in Cornwall. I also remember sunny days spent at Dawlish Warren with my cousins Yvonne, Michael and Archie (Kay’s family), travelling there by steam train or in their dad’s Ford V8 Pilot.

I was always keen on aircraft and one of my hobbies when I was a boy was making model aeroplanes. Cycling was another pastime I enjoyed, especially long-distance rides.When we were living at the Lakers Hotel in Redhill I joined the Air Training Corps – 135 Squadron – and in 1955 I was named the Squadron’s best all round Cadet of the year. I was also quite keen on sports and once was Surrey’s junior table-tennis champion. I was still keen on cycling and, with my friends Roy and Alan from Redhill, would regularly cycle to Biggin Hill and back to watch the aircraft - Gloster Meteors and Hawker Hunters in those days.

I also had some good friends in Deal, Kent where for a time (1956-59) Uncle Charles ran the Black Horse Hotel.

And so, with the encouragement of my ATC officers, I applied to join the Royal Air Force. In those days this meant going up to the RAF HQ in Adastra House in London. It also meant sitting a stiff entrance exam.To my amazement I passed and was accepted. It was a turning point in my life. to be continued…

The meat can be traced back to the farm and is prepared to order by our butchers. In the run up to Christmas we will have Hereford ribs of beef, gammons, capon and free range bronze turkeys, and speciality items such as acorn-fed pork from the New Forest.

The deli counter displays a range of awardwinning regional cheeses, including Isle of Wight Blue and Tunworth, with a range of Stiltons and Cheddars.There is British charcuterie, Springs smoked salmon, home-made sausage rolls, scotch eggs, quiche and pasties which you can eat in or take away.

The new kitchen offers brunch and lunch from 10am every Wednesday to Sunday with a menu from breakfast burritos and salt beef sandwiches to pizzas and salads – all handmade from scratch using the local, seasonal produce that you can buy in the shop.

The farm shop is available for private hire for events and parties in the evenings, or come and join one of our seasonal suppers once a month – a four course meal with canapés cooked using seasonal produce. Customers are kept up to date on events and seasonal produce via a newsletter.

Chia Seeds – To increase your power and energy If you haven’t tried them yet I would highly recommend you get a packet of Chia seeds in your cupboards for that special ingredient to give you lasting energy and brainpower!

Before I rave about the Chia seeds, I want to introduce myself, as this is a brand new column, which I am very excited about. I write about lots of health related subjects for corporate organizations and another local paper. I have two private clinics, one in Harley Street, London, and one in Bosham, West Sussex. I deliver health talks and stress management seminars all over the place. USA, The Baltics and here in the UK, and see

hundreds of clients each week for one to one sessions about all things health! It can range from children to adults with arthritis, cancer, fertility issues, digestive problems etc etc and I totally get a buzz from making people well, with food. It’s amazing and I love my job, so feel very lucky. No ailment is too big or small. If it bothers you, and you are tired of popping pills all the time then give me a call, and I can confidently say I will do my best to make you feel well again. However, it will take some dedication on your part, but nothing too hardcore I promise!

Anyway, back to business... I also wanted to share with you an amazing food

that gives us lasting energy so we feel like we have that drive to do all those exciting things in our lives. This little bag of power comes in the form of Chia seeds. They originate from the central valleys of Mexico and come from a plant sauce that is reported to have been eaten as the staple food by the Aztecs in pre Columbus times. Chia seeds were regarded as one of the top most important crops to the Aztecs next to maize and beans. These seeds are tasteless and all you need to do is soak them in water over night (One tablespoon in a cup of water and stir).

They are quite gloopy when ready and surrounded in a gel type liquid. Everyone can benefit from them including children and seniors citizens because these little gems are one of the most powerful, functional and nutritious super foods in the world!! They have no flavor so you can add them to all your favorite dips, salsas, and sauces and never dilute the flavors you love.

Why… the list is endless but I will try and give you a few benefits!!

They regulate your blood sugar levels, which is vital to regulate hormones, lower the risk of diabetes, and give you a constant flow of good energy. Chia seeds are low in calories and retain electrolytes in the body fluids. It is also a brainpower food as it is nature’s complete protein, which enhances brainpower, stamina and

overall endurance. It contains a balance of Vitamins and Minerals and anti-oxidants which helps prevent free radical damage in the body. By weight Chia has more calcium than whole milk and also contains a large amount of magnesium and boron.

Chia are a rich source of fibre which helps keep food running smoothly in the digestive process which keeps the colon hydrated, (essential for good health) ensuring the easy movement of food. It’s also the richest plant source of healthy oil containing more omegas 3 than Salmon, which is vital for brain function, heart and cholesterol health.

In summery Chia seeds are an excellent source of fibre, packed with antioxidants, a full protein chain, loaded with vitamins and minerals and the richest plant source of omega 3.

More than 75 per cent overestimate deposit needed to buy a new home More than 75 per cent of people in the Portsmouth area asked to estimate the deposit needed to buy a £250,000 new home massively overestimated how much was needed.

SPOTLIGHT ON VOLUNTEERING & THE DIFFERENCE IT CAN MAKE Community First offers a variety of volunteering services including a website hosting a range of volunteer opportunities (www.volunteerwessex.org), Business Volunteering and Supported Volunteering.

Supported Volunteer Co-ordinator, Ina Allum, helps those with support needs to find individual opportunities as well as offering a team volunteering option called Positive Pathways. Positive Pathways follows on from the very successful V Team project. Members have a wide range of support needs such as recovering mental health, long term unemployed who lack confidence, and mild learning difficulties. Members are referred by mental health services, the Department for Work and Pensions, and other support

services. The team carry out a range of tasks within the local community such as befriending and gardening in sheltered housing, conservation work and painting of community venues. The aim of Positive Pathways is to offer a supportive volunteering environment until members feel confident enough to volunteer alone or find employment.

Geraldine Swain (pictured right) was a member of the V Team for two years during which time she also took on individual volunteering roles and eventually found employment with Radian Housing who she had also been volunteering for. Geri tells her story:

“I started volunteering with the Community First V Team, a team of supported volunteers. Being a member of the V Team changed my life. It helped me gain confidence, overcome barriers and improved my self-esteem.

Volunteering is an opportunity to socialise, gain experience and learn new skills. For me it led to training and employment.

While with the V team I started to undertake other voluntary roles, helping the Rowans Hospice and also mentoring unemployed residents for Radian Housing and some administration work. I worked with Radian’s Employment Support and Training Team (EST) as a volunteer

initially. I was then offered casual work with the team, which I completed under the ‘Permitted Work’ scheme.

Both Janet and Ina (from Community First) supported and encouraged me with my independent volunteer role and through the process of applying for permitted work and my apprenticeship.

In 2016 I completed my Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship with the Radian EST Team. I also gained Level 3 Advice and Guidance. I am now studying for my Level 4 Business Administration with Radian and am enjoying the challenge of further qualifications. I left school at 16 and it has been a lifelong ambition to complete further education.

CHILDREN’S STARLIT WALK Children will once again have the opportunity to take part in a special sponsored walk in aid of Rowans Hospice on Wednesday 25th October around Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and HM Naval Base.

The event, which takes place during the October half-term break, has proved very popular over the last seven years raising thousands of pounds to support people living in Portsmouth and South East Hampshire affected by life-limiting illnesses.

All children aged 0 – 16 years must be accompanied by an adult but an adult can accompany up to four children. The walk starts at 6.30pm and goes past HMS Victory which is illuminated in all her glory, into the Naval Base not normally open to the public and back to Boathouse No. 7 where all children receive a medal, snack and drink.

For more of a challenge, there is a choice to walk the 1.5 mile route twice.

Everyone has the opportunity to light a candle in St Ann’s Church in memory of someone special and to make a memory star to place on the memory board. This is supported by Rowans Meerkat Service, including two Meerkat Mentors – young people who have experienced a significant

bereavement and who were supported by the service themselves.

Georgia, who is now 19 years old, said: “Last year, I joined the Walk again but this time as a Meerkat Mentor volunteer. I spent the evening in St Ann’s Church with Amelia, another Meerkat Mentor, and helped to welcome the children as they came into the Church to display their uniquely created memory stars. The stars and lit candles looked beautiful and so atmospheric. I’m proud I can continue to be part of this very special event.”

Amelia, who is now 17 years old, said: “Last year, instead of taking part in the walk, I was there as a volunteer, based in St Ann’s Church. The best part of the evening was seeing all the children come into the Church and helping them to hang up the stars they’d decorated in honour of their loved ones; the display of stars was honestly such a touching sight. For me, this is a really special event and definitely one for lots of children to get involved with.”

Dementia Friendly Hayling Island is a community action group, part of the Alzheimer’s Society, Dementia Friendly Communities initiative.

Our goal is to make Hayling Island a more understanding and inclusive place for people living with dementia, We are working to ensure that they are able to carry on living independent lives and taking a meaningful and active part in their local community for as long as possible. Two thirds of people with dementia live in the community and a large proportion of them feel unsupported and that their needs are not well understood. Our aim is to improve this situation.

To do this we are inviting local businesses, community groups and organisations to attend free Dementia Friends Information sessions and consider how they might take action to help those living with dementia. We also hold free sessions for the general public, schools and social and leisure groups. Those attending are invited to become Dementia Friends, and take action, however simple, to improve

life for those living with dementia.

Nationally, over 2 million people have become Dementia Friends, and on Hayling Island, nearly 400 people have signed up to this initiative, and 20 businesses and organisations have joined us in our first six months.

We hope to spread this project to the whole of Havant Borough in due course.

Your stringed instrument and the weather Every so often I'm asked by a musician to have a took at their instrument, mainly guitars and the odd ukulele, that has become unplayable! The one thing most of us don't take into account is the ever changing weather. How many players have felt their guitar would be safer hanging from a wall hook only to place the hanger on a wail that gets a lot of sun! Or too near a radiator or electric fire heater, and the body or neck warps out of shape!

During the summer a customer had left his western acoustic in the spare room, thinking it would be safe, but this summer the heat at times was excessive with no windows or door open the room temperature went up and sadly the body of the guitar moved!

Another place people forget how hot it gets, the motor car, a hot place on a hot day, not a place to leave your instrument!

Basements, Lofts, sheds and garages all suffer with the heat, cold and damp not the best of places to store, a no longer played and in the way instrument.

About five years ago I bought a nice 15 year old Washburn electro acoustic, it was rather dusty, with rusty strings.The woman I bought the guitar from said it had been in the basement for the past few years. As I worked my way removing the bridge pins the 5th ( A ) I pulled the pin out, so the bridge came away from the body, due to damp! It was cleaned up and repaired, saved a really nice guitar. People and accidents are another source of damage, a young customer, a very serious musician, had a friend sit on the neck of a nice playable acoustic guitar. Sadly, quite often, the cost of repair can be more than the instrument is actually worth!

A friend some years ago had good fortune, and bought his grandson a brand new Gibson Les Paul electric guitar.The grandson had it for about six months leaving it on the floor he stepped on the neck by accident - it has been repaired twice since. Sadly it will never be the same as it was originally and of course the value will be less on a resale.

So try and treat your instrument with care and it should hopefully last you for years.

Dementia-friendly cinema screenings set to continuet To celebrate International Older Persons Day on 1 October 2017, The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre were delighted to announce that its dementia-friendly cinema screenings are to continue for 2017 and into 2018.

Working in partnership with Home Instead Senior Care, The Spring launched a programme of relaxed dementia-friendly ‘Forget-Me-Not Cinema’ screenings for the local community earlier this year. This has proved to be such a success that the programme is continuing and has garnered additional support from Pfizer Havant.

All the films chosen are classic movies from light-hearted musicals such as Calamity Jane, to dramas including To Kill A Mocking Bird. Mark Gettinby, Director of Home

Instead Senior Care Havant, said, “Home Instead Havant are delighted to have championed this concept and to see Forget Me Not Cinema now go from strength to strength. These films have such an emotional connection with many people, and that evokes positive memories from those who may have seen them in this setting when they were first released. It is magical to see people reconnect with these classic films.”

Mega Shark Vs Crocosaurus The title is a great indication as to the quality of this movie. If you like Bmovies, then you’ll find some entertainment in this, but if you don’t, then you’ll want to watch something else except for this movie. For me, I didn’t mind it. It’s got a certain ‘so-bad-it’sgood’ feel to it, which I enjoyed. As the title suggests, it’s a creature mash-up and the plot is nothing good. The acting is bad and the CGI is worse. But as I said, this film has a certain ‘so-bad-it’s-good’ feel to it.

Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus As with Mega Shark Vs Crocosaurus, this is a B-movie with laughably awful CGI creatures, bad acting and basic plotting. If you enjoy these types of films, then you’ll enjoy this film, but it’s not good.You know what the film is about from the title and if you want a ‘s-good-it’sbad’ movie, then you’ll have fun with this.

creature, basically.This film is very 1980's. At this moment, it seems more of a satirical comedy than a horror film. I guess it's meant to be a comedy horror. It's not to be taken seriously. I like the concept to this film, about an alien coming through the TV. It's interesting.

Something about this film makes it feel fake. It looks fake to me, like its one of those TV commercials, but I think that makes it more interesting. Here come more special effects.

They're passable. Not great, but not terrible.

Same as the acting.This film is basically a satire on television, and it is quite funny. It's also entertaining to watch, which is great.The script isn't great, but it's got some charm.This is more fun than I thought it would be. It's a fun B movie. I love practical effects and these effects,

the monster effects, are good.

Blood Orange Blood Orange is about a couple who live in this luxury house in Spain and are rich.A man arrives who we learn is the step-child of the woman and he demands to have his inheritance which the woman has taken.

Complications ensue.

I really enjoyed this film. It’s a thriller which builds in suspense, getting more tense as it goes.

The bloodbath (literally) is also shot against beautiful vistas of the surrounding country.The acting is great, and I could easily say that this film could have been a contender in winning awards for the best film. It’s a well-made, twisty thriller, which leaves you on the edge.

I highly recommend this film.

Fishy Stories

From Derek Wood - Match Organiser, Horizon Angling Club for the Disabled Ten members attended Havant Lakes for Round 19 of the 2017 fixtures and the penultimate match Meeting at Havant.

Conditions were good with a sunny morning and cloudy afternoon but it remained dry and warm with little wind.

The bigger fish were feeding but the problem was hanging on to them and anyone on pole tactics lost out in the challenge to land the carp. However, John R had a lovely common carp at 12 lbs 11 ozs on a spicy beef boilie to take the honours on the day. This was John's first win in a match meeting and was well deserved. John was again assisting Steve Rackett who had a cracking 5 lb tench on his pole along with a couple of eels for a total of 5 lbs 10 ozs and 2nd place. Andy Farrell had roach, skimmer and eels for 1 lb 7 ozs and 3rd spot.

Jan had a small roach but also lost a sizeable carp as did Denis,Aaron and Andy. Elastic was never gonna keep em out of the lilies!

Dave, Tony, Paul and Sue all fished on without any luck. However it's good to see the bigger fish taking our baits at last.

Postcode Publications The Secret of Bedhampton is out

The secret is out, that there is a Secret Bookshop in Bedhampton. The Secret Bookshop is managed by the Bedhampton Historical Collection Group who established it in 2014 as a fund raising project, selling books from boxes and crates at various events in the Bedhampton area to raise funds for the Manor Trust. Last year the Trust offered the Secret Bookshop a permanent home in the old librar y of The Elms where they sell a good range of second-hand and out of print books with some hard to find and antiquarian books.

The secret is still well kept, as the bookshop is only open on the second Tuesday of each month between 10am

and 12 noon at the monthly Coffee with Books Mornings where visitors can look around the bookshop and enjoy a coffee in the spectacular surroundings of the Waterloo Room; a large Adam brothers influenced dining room, built in the early 1800s by the then owner, Sir John Theophilus Lee. In addition the group also host regular talks in the Waterloo Room.

Hayling Island Anniversary Bowls Match From Russell Mckerracher

A lady bowler, Vi Young, contacted Havant Council to request a bowling green for Hayling Island and in 1977 the Council agreed and the green opened. Vi was quickly joined by Joan Lovey, Brenda King, Ena McCullie and Vee Moore and they soon began bowling in the P&D League.

The dress code at that time was very strict and consisted of a white, cream or grey skirt only, the length of which had to be over the knee - no trousers. Blouse was white or cream and had to have collar and sleeves. Stockings or tights had to be an approved colour and shoes could only be regulation brown. Blazers were worn, with white gloves for special occasions.

The following year men joined the club Dennis Sivers, Harry McCullie, H Collins, Bob King and Bill Biggs.

The Clubhouse was a portacabin on the side of the green which was only replaced when the Community Centre opened and then one room was available to the club. Ladies and Gents shared this space along with a kitchen so small only one person at a time could use it.

In 1996, when the Community Centre was extended, the current arrangements were agreed and the club has gone from strength to strength with a current membership of 80-90 bowlers.

The club celebrated it’s 40th anniversary with a competition involving other local clubs.

The days bowling was won by the Cowplain team.

Southbourne Men’s Shed at Bursledon Brickworks Southbourne Men’s Shed is a community group of older men who have ceased full time work and want to remain active socially, mentally and physically with like-minded men of a similar age.

Now that we are entering winter and the weather is changing, it is good to reflect on some of the late summer activities enjoyed by Shedders (the name for our members) from the Men’s Shed at Southbourne.

September began with the usual activities in the Shed, drinking coffee and chatting, with a few active souls working on small personal projects.

Although it was a midweek trip and the steam driven machinery on the site was not working, eleven Shedders enjoyed a fine morning exploring the large Bursledon brickworks site.

Goodwood Revival meeting on Friday 8th Sept was an exciting day out although, at times, the weather tried hard to spoil it. Shedders from all over the county were invited to enjoy an introduction to the ‘Gateway Project’ in the new entrance buildings at the Singleton museum

Mengham Junior School Council

Only one week into the new school year, and already excitement has been brewing at Mengham Junior School ahead of the much anticipated School Learning Council elections. At Mengham we know how important it is for the children to understand and be able to apply the core British Values, in this case 'democracy' and 'the rule of law'.

Children from all year groups have been campaigning for their classmates' votes in the most spectacular ways. In an incredible display of confidence, campaigns have included confetti, home-made cakes and impressive banners and flags.

The all important vote took place in September, where all of the children were invited to post their selected candidate's name into the ballot box at the polling station.

Votes were counted and the winners announced in a special assembly. Miss Slade looks forward to welcoming her brand new School Learning Councillors in their first meeting, where they will begin voicing their classmates' ideas and opinions and organising our first whole school event.

‘Race Night’ was great fun as Men’s Shed hosted another fund-raising evening for Age Concern Southbourne.We were pleased to present the proceeds of the event to Age Concern who allowed us the use of their hall.

Southbourne Men’s Shed is a Member of UK Men’s Sheds Association and we were delighted to host a buffet luncheon and meeting of over 40 delegates from the Southern Men’s Shed Network on 25th September. It was a pleasure to show off what we have achieved in the short time Southbourne Men’s Shed has been running, to much praise from Shedders from all over the region.

Our final main event of the month was a Macmillan Coffee Morning on 28th September when we were pleased to welcome so many people to enjoy not only Coffee and Cake but also Bacon Rolls and Coffee.We had to rush out and buy more bacon as the Shedders enjoyed a rare treat even before the doors were opened to the public who kindly came along to support us.We were pleased to send a cheque to Macmillan Cancer Support and we thank you for attending.

A Positive Pathway awaits supported Volunteers in Havant following Lottery Grant Community First are celebrating after being awarded a £428k Big Lottery Fund grant for their supported volunteering project ‘Positive Pathways’. Positive Pathways will work with local Havant Borough residents who need a little bit of help to volunteer in their community, to increase participation in volunteering especially for those who are long term unemployed or who want to reconnect with their community but do not have the confidence to do it alone.

Offering team volunteering as well as personalised training and mentoring into individual placements, Positive Pathways will build on the success of the Havant V Team that supported many local people into volunteering. Positive Pathways will help people to gain valuable work experience, learn new skills, make new friends, support local charities and community groups, and all whilst improving their own health and wellbeing.

fantastic news for local residents, partner organisations and for Community First. This is a wonderful role for people who like meeting & interacting with a wide range of people from our local community & beyond who use the centre for a varied programme of activities, events and many other uses.

The post covers a wide range of services that range from: • Overseeing the reception area; • Helping the other volunteers and staff keeping the reception informative and inviting; • Greeting, signing in the centre users and visitors; • Taking payments for weekly events, and other payments due; • Overseeing the car parking at the hall and preparing refreshments which range from teas and coffees to light lunches and taking enquiries either by phone or in person.

There are both morning and afternoon sessions available throughout the week that now need filling with reception being open from 9am – 5pm five days a week. Sessions that need covering as morning and afternoon 9am – 1pm and 1pm - 5pm There is a very simple recruitment procedure: a quick form to complete, an informal chat with us and one reference request. There is a full induction, and there is plenty of ongoing support from the staff team & other volunteers FOH team members.

A pantomime to beat the post Christmas blues Hayling Island Amateur Dramatic Society presents ‘Cinderella’ a traditional pantomime written and directed by Dafydd Modig. The show will run from Saturday 13th to Saturday 20th January 2018 with both Saturdays consisting of performances at 2:30pm and 6:30pm and week night shows at 7:30pm.

This time the question isn't "will good defeat evil" but rather "will virtue get its just reward". Cinders is good, kind and pretty streetwise, and as usual her stepmother and sisters are the opposite and treat the poor girl as a lowly drudge. So when you meet her you're bound (just like the soft hearted Buttons) to fall in love with Cinders and hope she escapes her wretched life.

Fortunately, her rapping Fairy Godmother is on hand to help things move in the right direction. It so happens that Prince Charming is searching for someone to love him for himself rather than being heir to the throne and, just maybe, everything will work out for Cinders.

Our24 ladies are passionate about singing, and look forward to further developing our musical potential with a new director, male or female.

We have been together since 2008, and are affiliated to LABBS, Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers. In recent years we have competed at Llandudno, Harrogate, Bournemouth, Portsmouth, and the surrounding areas. Our repertoire is wide ranging and often reviewed, but not all of our songs are in Barbershop fashion.

EXHIBITION SUCCESSES Hayling Island Camera Club put on their annual Photographic Exhibition at Northney Farm Barn over the weekend of 19/20th August. Visitors topped the 270 mark this year, most of whom accepted the club’s invitation to choose their top image and their top panel (a selection of images on a theme).

The new President, Keith Tester, announced the results of the visitors’ votes at the first meeting of the season on 4th September.

The photographer of the winning image was Karen Horne with a portrait of “Tamyka”.

Karen will be presented with the Lee Filters Millennium Cup at the end of the season.

The winner of the draw for the picture the visitor would most like to take home was Sheila Buckingham who receives a copy of the image entitled “The Great Gatsby”. The photographer was Carol Johnson who receives a cheque for £20.

The winner of the panel with the most votes was Bobby Hamilton with “Africa in Infra-red”.

Bobby received a voucher for a cream tea for two at Northney Farm Barn tea room as did Nicola Holland, the winner of the draw from those who voted for his panel.

The club is looking forward to an active 2017/18 season. Forthcoming highlights include a visit from Guy Edwards on 4th December with “A professional approach to outdoor photography” . Guy is a well-known professional landscape, nature and travel photographer who makes a welcome return to the club.

January 15th sees another visit from the ever-popular Gavin Hoey with his short workshop on “Lighten Up”. Gavin will be taking and showing some great ways to light photos. Both photography and postprocessing will be carried out live and consists of a wide variety of subjects, from candles to portrait photography.

Both these events are expected to attract photographers from outside the club and visitors paying at the door are advised to arrive in good time for the meeting which commences at 7.00 for 7.30 pm.
