YOUNG TUBA PLAYER TO STAR IN WATERLOOVILLE It's not often that the tuba is heard as a solo instrument but young Tom Torley, currently studying at the Royal College of Music in London, is hoping to change that!

He'll be appearing with Havant Symphony Orchestra to play the Tuba Concerto by Edward Gregson on Saturday March 25th at Oaklands Catholic School.

The Orchestra, conducted by both their Music Director, Jonathan Butcher, and student conductor, Tom Griffin, will also play music by Schubert, Dvorak, Borodin and Mendelssohn - a real feast for the ears!

Postcode Publications Once again through the generosity of donors a collection of gifts was made for disadvantaged children who might otherwise miss the delights of receiving something from Santa.

Each gift was for either boys or girls of certain age ranges given on labels hung on the tree for placing on gifts bought by donors Postcode Publications were pleased to contribute together with generous staff and elected members to provide sackfuls of gifts for Santa to deliver on Christmas Eve. Clanfield Gardening Club From David Chamberlain

We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at Petersgate School, Green Lane at 7.30p.m.

You don't have to have a large Garden or be a good Gardener to attend, the talks are very interesting and it's somewhere you can meet like minded people. The Committee organize a varied programme and the Subscription is £3.00 the price of a coffee. Members pay £3.00 a meeting including tea/coffee and biscuits, Guests are always welcome. Once a year we hold an Annual Show in August which

covers anything from the Garden, Craft, Cookery, Photographs and Afternoon Teas with a Raffle. Shields, Cups and Trophies are presented to winners and there are Children's categories. During the year we have Social Evening too and Competitions for Members. A Programme is given out for the Year when you become a Member and a Schedule for the Show can be found in the Local Shops, in plenty of time for you to enter.

Children's photography is 'Ducks'. All Children's categories are under 8 and 811 on the show date.

Our next meeting is 14th February when John Negus's talk will be 'Into the Amazon, South American Wonders'.

On 14th March Dave Allport will give a talk - 'Life in a Blue Suit'.

The science is in. Singing is really, really, good for you. And the most recent research suggests that group singing is the most exhilarating and transforming of all. Singing increases self-awareness, Self - confidence and our ability to communicate with others.

It decreases stress, comforts us, and helps us to forge our identity and influence our world.

What an enjoyable year we have had.

And I must say that I am sorry it has come to an end. On the other hand, 2017 may turn out to be quite exciting. Watch this space ! And at last we have our lovely new banner, thanks to Lucy Van De Ven. We have had some amazing sing-outs, ranging from Sheltered Housing to social groups etc. raising money for charity in the process.

November and December were particularly busy with the Denmead WI birthday party, the Memorial Service at St John’s Cathedral, Portsmouth, a fundraising Carol Service for Naomi House, a Memorial Service at The Oaks, Havant, Lee-on-Solent Art Group, the Meridian Centre, and QA Hospital, ending with a celebration of

Christmas songs and Carols at the Purbrook Centre.

Of course we also have our Day Chorus, Silver Spirit, made up from those lucky enough to be retired. This gives us a lot of fun, and entertains others in Day Centres, and Residential Homes etc. Although we are the entertainers, we also get a lot back from an audience, as songs are remembered and memories are stirred.

Communication is a wonderful thing.

We are Seeking a Musical Director As the song says, "You're The One That I Want, oo-oo-o.” Spirit-of-the-South, are seeking a Musical Director. We are members of LABBS, Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers, and have sung together since 2008. Having a good range of songs in four part harmony, our 23 ladies enjoy taking part in competitions, performing in sing-outs, concerts, and community events.

We look forward to further developing our musical potential.

Report on my work locally and in Westminster My top priority as your local MP is helping build a strong local economy, with vibrant local businesses providing jobs for local people. Thankfully, the outlook is positive: business confidence is high and local unemployment is low. Since 2010, the number of jobseekers’ allowance claimants has fallen by more than 50% in our area.

This is mirrored by investment into the area In January, I visited clothing manufacturer FatFace to see their new distribution centre at Dunsbury Hill Farm.

Work is progressing well, and the centre is expected to be completed later this year creating around 150 new jobs in the next five years.

In Westminster, I spend much of my time championing our local firms, and I showcase local success stories to Government Ministers when they visit our constituency.

For example Robin Walker, the new Brexit Minister recently spoke to local business and community leaders at an event I organised at Langstone Technology Park and backed Havant’s economy.

What is Housing Disrepair?

I’m also taking practical action on the ground to help residents: after the success of last year’s event, I’m organising my second Jobs, Apprenticeships and Careers Fair on Friday 3 March at Havant Leisure Centre from 10am to 4pm, backed by the Postcode Publications. Many local employers from across the constituency will have stalls on the day.

Admission is free, with hundreds of jobs and apprenticeships on offer from both the public and private sector. The National Careers Service will hold workshops on both CV writing and job interview techniques.

Disrepair at a property may occur if the structure of the building, windows, doors or heating for space or water, stop working as they should during your tenancy.

If this doesn't work you may need to tell your Landlord in writing (either by letter or email) and ensure you keep a copy including the date you sent it.

If the repairs still aren't being done, you may need to visit a solicitor for help.

Legal Aid is available to fix very serious disrepair issues that are likely to damage you and your family's health. If you are eligible for Legal Aid you may be entitled to free or reduced cost legal advice to help force your Landlord to do repairs.

If you have rent arrears at your property and your Landlord has taken you

CRAFT BEERS - Enjoy your Local Ales Mild – The Beer that Time Forgot Up until the 1960’s Mild was one of the most popular beers in England representing about 50% of all beer sales in pubs. The term Mild originally referred to the age of the beer as Mild was a young (or mild tasting ) beer. Mild is primarily a dark, sweetish, malty, low alcohol beer. The term Mild also differentiates it from its hoppier rival, Bitter.

In the 1970’s lager began to take off and real ale lovers seemed to prefer drinking bitter.

Mild had a bit of an image problem as an old persons drink and quickly lost favour. Mild is still popular in the West Midlands but is hard to find in the South of England. I know of only one pub in Emsworth (out of nine) that sells draft Mild.

Milds tended to be brewed between 34% abv. but some brewers are now producing stronger versions of this beer. I think it is a pity that this traditional English beer has gone out of favour and been replaced by paler, more bitter beers. Mild also goes well with traditional English meals such as casseroles and roast dinners. The smoothness of the beer compliments food whereas citrusy American style pale ales tend to clash with many flavours. Perhaps it is the name that puts people off and some clever marketing person might want to try and reinvent Mild with a new identity.

Here are a selection of bottled Milds that I have found in off-licences around the South of England. These beers can also be ordered via specialist beer websites. Milds should be served at cellar temperature (10º -12º C) and definitely not straight from the fridge.

West Berkshire Brewery Maggs Magnificent Mild 3.8% This beer is almost black in colour and has a caramel toffee nose. This is a fine example of a traditional mild. The beer is slightly sweet with a smooth mouth feel and a hint of treacle in the flavour. West Berkshire Brewery were founded in 1995 at Yattendon, near Newbury and have a 50 barrel plant. They produce a range of cask

and bottled beers which are available in the South of England Shortts Farm Brewery Two Tone Dark Mild 3.8% This is a dark brown brew with a chocolate aroma. This is not as sweet as some milds and reminded me a little of porter.

One could taste hints of chocolate and molasses. This could be a modern take on a dark mild. Shortts Farm were founded in 2012 on a family farm in Thorndon, Suffolk.

They operate a 5 barrel plant and brew a range of cask and bottled beers.

These are FREE informal drop-in events for staff and volunteers from voluntary and community organisations to speak to the Community First team directly about their fundraising needs and to start to identify appropriate sources of funding.

They will be of interest for organisations that are looking for funding. Community First’s Development Officers will be able to discuss grants and fund-raising opportunities with you, and discuss ways to develop an organisation.

From Matt Rowland, Schools Liaison and Marketing Apprentice Once again Havant Sixth Form College was delighted to celebrate the achievements of their high achieving students.

On Thursday 5 January more than 100 teachers, parents, students, governors and sponsors attended the College’s eighth Annual Awards Ceremony. The event is a real testimony to the students’ outstanding academic achievements and commitment to their studies. The awards were sponsored by a range of universities from across the country, as well local businesses.

This year’s guest speaker was Jon Westbrook, former Havant Sixth Form College student and graduate of the University of East Anglia, Engineer for various European placements with National Air Traffic Services (NATS) and currently the Programme Engineering Manager responsible for projects to replace the UK Flight Data Processor system which is the computational heart of the Air Traffic control system across the UK. Jon gave an inspirational speech on his studies, experiences and challenges in achieving his career goals and presented the awards to the students.

Mike Gaston, Principal and Chief Executive said, “The awards evening is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate achievement and to recognise the particular contribution of individual students. This is what makes Havant Sixth Form College the high achieving College

CELEBRATION OF LEIGH PARK Community First acquired the lease of Leigh Park Community Centre in 2016. Plans are now in place at the Centre for a Celebration of the Local Community of Leigh Park, a free event being held on Saturday 11th March - 11.0016.00.

Celebrate is a new £5m grant programme that launched in July 2016 from the Big Lottery Fund for communities across the UK, to celebrate what makes their local ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

neighbourhood great.

They found that “more than half of people asked, reported they have never or cannot remember ever coming together to celebrate with their local neighbourhood”.

After successfully applying to the programme, Community First secured an incredible award of £8,528 for the Community Centre to run the event,to bring the neighbourhood together and celebrate the past, present and future of the Leigh Park community that so many people hold dear.

On the day, all corners of the community are invited to come together to Celebrate the services, groups, schools, history and all importantly, the people of Leigh Park. Leah

Moore, Centre Co-ordinator says “With a spread of food provided by local businesses, performances on stage by the schools of Leigh Park, and a family movie complete with free popcorn and hotdogs, we are really excited about providing the people and families of the community a day to celebrate, remember, and come together.”

There will also be the opportunity for local people to have a say in the future of their Community Centre.

There are a number of reliefs and allowances that are available and can help you to reduce your tax bill. Here are a few to consider: • The introduction of the personal savings allowance in April 2016 means that a basic rate taxpayer is able to receive up to £1,000 of savings income (up to £500 for a higher rate taxpayer) without any tax being due.

In some cases, you can transfer £1,100 of your personal allowance to your partner.

• Help to buy ISAs allow individuals over the age of 16 to save up to £200 per month. Buyers can also deposit a lump sum of up to £1,000 when they set up their account. The money will earn interest and also qualify for a 25% bonus (up to £3,000) from the government provided the funds are used to buy a first home.

• The annual allowance for pension contributions is currently £40,000 per year for those with income of less than £150,000. It is possible to carry forward any unused allowances from the previous 3 years.

• Are you taking advantage of inheritance tax exemptions such as the annual £3,000 limit for gifts out of income? Do you have surplus assets that you can give away and reduce the value of your estate?

• You may be eligible to claim for tax credits or the universal credit as they can be payable to people with fairly high incomes.

Staff from Queen Alexandra Hospital’s Renal Team have organised a range of different fundraising events to raise important funds for their Department.

Funds raised will be put towards an important ultrasound scanner and other pieces of equipment to reduce waiting times and to improve the patient experience.

Events organised are a music night on Friday 3 February, from 7pm at the Rifle Club in Portsmouth. Tickets are £7 per person, with music by the Colonels, the Cortex, and the Offbeat Offensive.

15 members of the Renal Team, patients and family are taking part in a sponsored skydive in Salisbury on Sunday 23 April and 21 people are taking part in 204 mile cycle ride in May. Staff are also looking for keen cyclists to take part in an Isle of Wight cycle ride on Saturday 3 June. This will be a 40 mile cycle from QA to St Mary’s IOW Dialysis Unit.

Participants are asked to pay a £10 entry free and to raise a minimum sponsorship amount of £50 per person.

David Penny, from Southsea has been receiving treatment for renal failure from the Department since 2011. He said, “Renal failure runs in my family and I am fundraising because of the great care I have received.”

THE CAT & RABBIT RESCUE CENTRE Malinda & Madelina Good day from your favourite Out and About Reporter at the Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre.

It's been a busy month you may have heard me on the local radio station Spirit FM on 'War of the Works' over 5 days we had to answer general knowledge questions against another local team. It was a good thing I came in to help answer questions without me we would not have won. I surprised myself how clever I am! We are looking forward to our prize and I am now studying extremely hard for any future competitions. I hope cat food pizza is on the menu.

Sadly my friend Desmond passed away recently he wasn't an out and abouter, being 21 years old he lived in the house during the day he was in charge of administration work and helping our liaison manager Claire in the office. We will all miss him. I am arranging interviews among the others here Marcus has said to me he thinks he would like to try for the role, that's if he will stop getting all the attention when we have visitors at the centre I know he is a big ball of fluff but I am the most handsome.

We have a new friend joined us a couple of weeks ago Arlo decided he wanted to try life with us. He has fitted in really well struts about like he's been here forever. I of course showed him the ropes and where the best sun bathing spots are, he spends most of his time watching staff working, making sure they are busy. That leaves more time for me to study, just there under the tree. Its hard work learning all these facts I just might have a nap, till next time, have a great month.

This month we would like to introduce you to two wonderful sisters who are desperate to find a new home maybe you could be the one to give them amazing ending. Malinda is a white and torti female and her sister Madelina is white and black.

They are both 15 years old looking for a new loving home together. They came to the Centre on the 12th November 2016 as their owners could no longer keep them at their home. They are very special girls and it is important to explain why. Madelina has cancer on her nose and it is quite serious she may not have too long left in this world.

Malinda has cancer on her ears, which is not too bad at the moment. This is why we need a new home for these lovely girls soon to give them as much time as possible being

loved by their new owners.

Madelina is on full foster so all her vet problems relating to her treatment of cancer are covered by The Centre, Malinda is on part foster which means any problems with her ears she can come back here to see the vet. They are both lovely girls that enjoy cuddles. Would anyone be willing to please take a chance on them? If you think you can offer Malinda and Madelina the new home they so desperately deserve, please do not hesitate to contact us here at the Centre.

The Pitchpipers Big Knit

Never ones to pass up an opportunity to raise money for a charity, The Havant Pitchpipers have been busy knitting little woolly hats in aid of Age UK for the Innocent Smoothie Big Knit event.

The hats are put on Smoothie bottles

and with each one sold a donation of 25p is given to Age UK. So far Innocent Smoothie has donated nearly £2m.

New Water Trail at Staunton Country Park Exciting new Water Trail at Staunton Country Park as education partnership with Portsmouth Water is extended by a further 3 years Staunton Country Park in partnership with Portsmouth Water, are pleased to launch a new Water Trail featuring a code breaking challenge and quiz for schools and visitors.

The trail takes you around the Farm Park searching for twelve boards of information looking at the importance of water, how we use water and how we can be more water efficient.Visitors need to read the information to answer the water quiz and find the hidden numbers and letters on the boards to crack the water code words. Once complete, visitors can collect their prize of water saving stickers from the Visitor Centre.

Staunton Country Park and Portsmouth Water are also pleased to announce that they have extended their education partnership for a further 3 years. The partnership, which at the end of this agreement will have reached 15 years, aims

to promote water efficiency and to deliver a ‘Water is Life’ programme to schools looking at the water cycle, water supply and treatment as well as water conservation.

Both organisations are committed to deliver a variety of fun and interesting activities to spread the word that everyone can do something to save water now and save the environment for tomorrow.

Food and Wine March into Spring with Easter Wines

By Jonathan Rogers of VIN Wine Merchants in Emsworth I’m writing this article still in the depths of our winter chill in February, but while the ice is on the car I can’t be anything but cheery at the thought of warm spring days sipping on a nice chilled white or a glass of fizz. It doesn’t seem that long ago that I was recommending big bold heavy reds to warm us up but now we can look forward to the warmth and joys of spring and the lighter more refreshing wines.

On warm days we automatically think of crisp whites and fresh rose wines that we can drink quite happily without the need for food.

However, a lot of wines are now arriving on our shelves which are creeping up in alcohol and quite a few of us are finding these too much.

When I first started in the trade some 26 years ago, the standard alcohol was around the 11%, nowadays, it’s not unusual to have wines coming in at 14.5%.

If you prefer the lighter style, then stay away from heavily oaked reds and whites. A lot of the tannin in wine (the rough sensation on the tongue and cheeks) comes from the oak barrels, and this is what adds the body in wine. However, oak also adds sweeter fruit characters, especially vanilla, which gives the wine softness and takes away the acidity.

The coming of spring also means the arrival of Easter and time again to think about feasting. Lamb is the common choice for Easter Sunday and choosing the right wine to have with it will take your meal to the next level. Generally, I tend to recommend lighter reds, but that’s only because I prefer to have a nice pink joint of lamb. If this is your preference then pick the Pinot Noir grape which produces soft, round, fruity and elegant wines. Burgundy in France is the home of Pinot, but generally I haven’t had a bad example from anywhere. If

you enjoy your lamb a bit more well done, then upgrade in body to balance the heavier flavours of the meat. Here I’m thinking of Australian Cabernet which has the weight but as its warmer climate you will get more fruit driven characters. If you want less fruit, then go Italian with a Montepulciano D’Abruzzo or a Primitivo from the Puglia region (the heel of the boot). Although these wines will pair nicely with the lamb, as I always say to everyone, wine is meant to be enjoyed so drink whatever you want with your meals, you will still enjoy it!

Whisk egg and coconut sugar together.

2. Melt butter add to egg and sugar mixture.

Mix oat flakes, coconut flour, cinnamon and baking powder in a separate bowl and then add to sugar and butter mixture. Mix well and a drizzle of milk if required.

3. Drop a teaspoon full of mixture onto a baking sheet with grease proof paper or silicone baking mat leave plenty of space between each mound of mixture.

4. Pre heat oven and bake at 170 degrees fan oven for 8 minutes and then turn tray round and then for a further 8 minutes or until golden brown.

5. Leave to cool before removing from the baking sheet.

FAMILY RAISE £3,391.15 FOR QA’S INTENSIVE CARE UNIT Along with his friends and family, Darren Clark from Havant has kindly raised £3,391.15 for the Critical Care Unit at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham.

The money was raised after Darren’s partner Sharon, 46 passed away from pneumonia on the Unit in September 2015.

To raise the funds, Darren and his friends and family took part in the Great South Run, they held two successful charity car washes and took part in an exhilarating skydive.

Before his fundraising, Darren said, “I am fundraising for the Intensive Care Unit as my partner passed away in that Department in September 2015. We are fund-raising as we would like to give something back.”

Steve Mathieu, Clinical Director for Critical Care said, “We are incredibly grateful to Mr Clark, his family and friends for this generous donation of £3,391.15.

Thank you on behalf of the whole Portsmouth Critical Care Team.”

THE GAZEBO GARDEN MAJOR REFURBISHMENT WORK

the blocked former windows in the top floor of the Gazebo.

The Gazebo Garden is now closed to public access until the beginning of March.

During the spring months, replanting is scheduled to take place, and the Spring Arts and Heritage Centre will be researching the historical context and producing new interpretive panels for installation later this year, when the upper story of the Gazebo will also be open to visitors for the first time. New folding seating will be made available for any local organisations interested in using the garden for appropriate education, social or arts events.

Rowlands Castle Heritage Centre Railway layout comes home

The Rowlands Castle Heritage Centre team worked hard to attract funding from local donations to purchase the award winning model railway of the centre of the village during the times of preparations for the D-Day Landings.

The model - built by Peter Goss, has attracted national acclaim.

Peter was on hand to assist with reassembly of the model in Rowlands Castle Parish Hall on Saturday 7th January.

PUBLIC ACCESS DEFIBRILLATORS SAVE Charity no: 1049778

On average, South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS) is called out to attend more than three patients a day across the four counties we serve, who have suffered a cardiac arrest.

That’s over 1,100 cardiac arrests a year in our region alone and in the UK, less than 1 in 10 people who have a cardiac arrest outside of hospital survive.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the UK’s single biggest killer and claims around 60,000 lives a year. It can happen to anyone at any time, and often without any warning.

SCA is a condition where the heart either stops or beats in such a chaotic way it doesn’t pump blood around the body and unless treatment is given promptly, the patient will die. If no treatment is given, every minute that passes reduces the patient’s chances of survival by 10%.

It is known survival rates can be significantly improved if cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and a defibrillator are used before an ambulance arrives.

Modern day defibrillators are portable and easy to use. Indeed, those used in the community have ‘voice prompts’ that give clear instructions to the operator. The machine analyses the patient’s heart to confirm they are suffering a cardiac arrest and only then will it allow the operator to give a shock. There is no possibility of giving

a shock to someone not in cardiac arrest.

To help people find their nearest defibrillator in times of emergency, SCAS has launched the Save a Life App. The app, which is free to download and iOS and Android compatible, can tell users where their nearest automatic external defibrillator (AED) is anywhere in the South Central region should they come across someone in cardiac arrest. It also gives guidance on how to perform CPR and use a defibrillator.

Find out more about the app and download it at www.scas.nhs.uk/savealife Community First Responders in Havant were part of the team that recently helped install a public access defibrillator in a former phone box at the Greywell shopping centre. Anyone calling 999 because someone nearby is in cardiac arrest will be given a code with which they can open the cabinet and get the defibrillator out.

The majority of the money needed for the equipment has been provided by the parents of seventeen-year-old South Downs College student Sarah Morgan, who sadly died in March 2015 after collapsing on a bus on her way home from Waterlooville.

Sarah’s Mum, Anna, said: “Our daughter suffered a cardiac arrest after shopping with friends. Despite the best efforts of everyone who helped when she collapsed, Sarah could not be revived. A week later we faced the terrible decision of switching off her life support machine. If a defibrillator had been available when she collapsed, it could have saved Sarah’s life.”

There are currently 25 defibrillators in the PO9 post code area, but in order to ensure that every resident is within 8 minutes of a defibrillator, we urgently need to raise funds to install 10 more.

LIVES – AND WE NEED MORE OF THEM Portsmouth researchers involved in study looking to prevent heart attack deaths Around 30-40 people are brought to Queen Alexandra Hospital every month suffering a heart attack.

And now those patients are being offered the opportunity to take part in a high-profile clinical trial which could potentially change the future of heart attack treatment.

The £1.3m British Heart Foundationfunded clinical trial is looking at whether the simple technique of inflating and deflating a blood pressure cuff on the patient’s arm during a heart attack can help reduce the damage to the heart and help recovery. This process is called remote ischaemic conditioning (or RIC for short).

During a heart attack damage can be caused to the heart muscle. For patients who present with a heart attack the most effective treatment for limiting that damage is primary angioplasty – a treatment that restores the blood supply to the heart muscle by widening blocked coronary arteries and inserting a small tube called a stent.

But researchers have found, in some smaller studies, that the simple and cheap blood pressure cuff method, when used alongside an angioplasty, can reduce the damage to the heart muscle.

If successful, the research could reveal a simple way to help prevent heart failure and improve the chances of survival after a heart

attack, and may lead to a change in clinical practice. It may reduce the number of hospital admissions for heart failure in the longer term.

Ali Dana, Consultant Cardiologist and Principal Investigator for the trial at QA, said: “This is a very exciting and high profile study for us to be a part of. We were invited to join the study by the lead investigator at University College London.

“This is an area of research that I was interested in, from a basic science perspective, some 20 years ago when I was doing my PhD, and it has taken all this time to bring the findings in to the clinical arena.

Now is the time to see whether it really works for patients or not – and if it does, our patients may potentially see significant benefits from this simple intervention.

“The idea is that inflating the blood pressure cuff around their arm and making the arm ischaemic (starved of oxygen) for short periods of time, will protect the heart and reduce the size of their heart attack. If you have a smaller heart attack you live longer, have a smaller chance of heart failure and you have a better long term prognosis. “ Since February this year, researchers at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Queen Alexandra Hospital, have recruited over 100 patients to the trial – making them one of the highest recruiting centres out of the 21 hospitals nationwide

currently recruiting to the trial.

“Our recruitment success lies with our novel approach to this study,” said Dr Dana.

“At the start of our involvement with this study we were only able to recruit patients in to the trial during office hours, when the research team were here. But we are a 24/7 service so it was only right that we ran the clinical trial in the same way. We approached the radiographers in the Cath lab, where all heart attack patients initially present, and encouraged them to take on the role of verbally assenting the patients and randomising them into the trial. We are now at the point that we are able to screen nearly every patient arriving at our unit and recruit 60-70 per cent of all heart attack patients in to the study.

“We owe our recruitment success to our amazing and enthusiastic teamwork within the cardiology department, including the interventionalists, Cath lab staff, radiographers and the research nurses and clinical trials assistant keeping on top of all the data entry.

“We now have 10 radiographers on the delegation log, actively participating in recruitment into the trial. Since they came on board we are going from strength to strength.

“As a team we are all very proud of our success, but it is only through the team work within the department that we have

been able to achieve it, and be able to offer participation in this trial to the vast majority of our heart attack patients.”

The trial, called ERIC-PPCI, is being led

by Professors Derek Hausenloy, Derek Yellon and Rajesh Kharbanda. The trial is being run by the Clinical Trials Unit at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. They will study 2,000 people who have had a heart attack from 30 UK hospitals. They will investigate if ‘conditioning’ the heart using the blood pressure cuff method reduces the damage caused to the heart muscle in a heart attack, and if it improves survival and prevents heart failure developing. They will combine their results with a trial running in parallel in Denmark, to make the findings even more powerful, so that 4,300 patients will be studied in all.

A 63-year-old woman from West Sussex, who is taking part in the study at QA, said: “I was at home when I got a really crushing pain in my chest and arm. I asked my husband to call an ambulance and I was brought to QA. When they mentioned the trial to me I agreed because there didn’t seem to be any major risk and also because I believe it’s hugely important – you can’t find out about new treatments unless you participate in research.”

Our visit was on a cold and misty Tuesday night and we were warmly greeted by the family. We sampled their signature Thali’s – what I really liked was the opportunity to taste different curries which was far better in a Thali format rather than ordering a bowl of a particular curry and then finding you don’t like it or it is too hot or spicy. It also generates a social atmosphere in the same way as eating in a tapas restaurant. “We are fully licensed and can cater for anybody with dietary requirements - what we really want is our patrons to sample our freshly cooked food and experience the special spices we use” We heartily endorse his aims and thoroughly recommend a visit this restaurant and meet the Miah family.

Portsmouth Hospitals Charity, who support the patients of Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust by improving existing facilities and by providing additional equipment, are looking for individuals who are keen to sign up for their next challenge.

The Brighton Marathon is on Sunday 9 April and the course runs along the Brighton Seafront, so you’re guaranteed a picturesque view and an amazing atmosphere.

For this event, there is a £25 registration fee and a minimum sponsorship amount of £350.

The Southampton Marathon is on Sunday 23 April and starts in Hoglands Park, Southampton. The course is a stunning mix of city, coast and parks. It is a spectator friendly route, with lots of activities, coffee

houses and restaurants to explore, making it a great day out for the whole family.

For this event, there is a £30 registration fee and a minimum sponsorship amount of £300.

If a Marathon isn’t for you, then why not take part in the Southampton 10K or Southampton Half Marathon. These races are also on Sunday 23 April, from Hoglands Park, Southampton.

Social Saturdays for older people A weekly club for older people in Waterlooville is moving to a new venue. The Waterlooville Weekend Club is run by registered charity Brendoncare and offers a range of games and activities, including indoor kurling and quizzes.

More importantly, it is somewhere for people to socialise, meet new friends and enjoy companionship.

Since January, the club meets at the Jubilee Centre, Millennium Court, Mill Road, Purbrook, Waterlooville, PO7 7UJ every Saturday between 10am and 12pm.

Over 1 million older people in the UK say they are always or often lonely.

Brendoncare runs more than 90 social and friendship clubs across Hampshire and Dorset and is currently focused on expanding its offering of clubs at weekends.

DENMEAD EVENING WI In late November a group of us much enjoyed a visit to the Houses of Parliament courtesy of our MP George Hollingbery who was there to greet us. We were split into two groups with guides, and toured Westminster Hall, St Stephens Hall, the House of Lords chamber, the Royal Gallery, the Robing Room, and the House of Commons chamber.

Our members enjoyed a number of events leading up to Christmas including a festive lunch at the Bird in Hand, and participating in the Bere Forest Group Christmas Meeting when each WI (Cowplain, Lovedean, Purbrook, Stakes, Denmead Afternoon & Denmead Evening) provided a 10 minute entertainment, all of which was much fun. At our December members meeting we got into the festive spirit when we were entertained by and sang along with the local Ukelele band “Whacky Wednesdays”. We also shared and signed a large Christmas card prepared by the husband of one of our members and thereby raised funds for The Rowans.

In January we shared a meal at the Harvest Home in Denmead to brighten up

those dark winter days and enjoy a quieter spell after the hectic days of December. At our January members meeting we were singing again with a welcome return of Gill Grech who will gave us some more voice training for Singing for Pleasure, and at our February members meeting we were joined by volunteers from Gosport & Fareham Inshore Rescue Service who gave us a real insight into the very valuable work they do.

Our Craft Group reconvened in February and have been busy preparing items for our SPRING FAIR which is on Saturday, 18 March, from 10.00 am to 12 noon at All Saints Church Hall, Denmead, PO7 6NN. Everyone is very welcome to this most enjoyable event – there will be lots of stalls to browse including books, toys, bric-a-brac, plants, gifts, and a delicious cake stall. Why not come and try your luck at the Easter Chocolate competition or our super raffle, and meet your friends for coffee.

We meet on the third Wednesday of each month at 7.30 pm at the Memorial Hall in Denmead and any ladies interested in seeing what goes on at the WI would be made very welcome. Guests can attend up to three of our meetings free of charge.

The WI offers women the opportunity to make friends, learn new skills, and campaign on wide-ranging issues. The Pompey Pals:Ypres 1917 Waterlooville Library, Friday 24 March at 3pm - During the course of 1917, the 14th and 15th Battalions, Hampshire Regiment were heavily involved with the fighting around Ypres, Belgium, resulting in more loss of life for Portsmouth and the surrounding area. Monday 27th March - 1900 for 1930 hrs ‘A Display Pilot’s Story’ Wg Cdr (Ret’d) Bill Ramsey Wg Cdr (Ret’d) Bill Ramsey, was a leading pilot in the RAF between 1972 and 2008 and was one of their principal VBomber, display & instructor pilots for nearly 30 years. Bill’s presentation is his personal story of around 50 years’ involvement with mostly military aviation. Briefly covering his operational career – an even split of nuclear bomber pilot and flying instruction – it moves on to his eventual career in the display world, a tale of persistence and luck.

The main part of the presentation covers his time as a display pilot, with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight – piloting the Lancaster and the Dakota, his four years as the senior supervisor to the Red Arrows, and time as the RAF solo aerobatic display pilot for the Grob Tutor. Subsequently Bill returned to Vulcan flying with Vulcan XH558 and he was the last aircraft captain on the final flight in 2015.

Help in Bereavement Help in Bereavement has since 1979, supported people of all ages struggling with the loss of a loved one. Trained Visitors usually meet people in their own home for about an hour each visit and for as long as is needed. It is a free service.

Today we will provide some self-help exercises for mid back pain (thoracic spine pain) The thoracic spine (the part of the spine that starts just below the neck to half-way down the back) is a common area to get pain and stiffness, but it is a difficult area to stretch.

Pain can be felt between the shoulder blades, lower back (lumbar spine), neck (cervical spine), shoulders and also into the ribs all due to stiffness in the thoracic spine.

It is common amongst those with poor posture, who use the computer or drive a lot. Hairdressers and factory workers are also prone to thoracic spine pain and stiffness.

Physiotherapy exercises combined with manipulation, mobilisation and massage is the best treatment for thoracic spine pain and stiffness.

Health Column for body and mind Every cell in our body needs salt to function. We rely on this mineral to promote circulation, hydration and detoxification.

When we sweat or go to the toilet, we lose salt, which means we need to keep replacing it in order to help stay in optimum health.

Salt has gained a bad reputation due to the overuse of table salt, a highly processed substance which is extremely toxic in large quantities. This "salt" is used in all processed foods as a preservative and to add flavour. It also makes the food more addictive, leading to overconsumption. Due to its synthetic additives, our bodies find it hard to dissolve, meaning it builds up in our organs, leading to a range of serious health problems. This is why health officials warn against having too much.

So our bodies need salt but we are warned against salt. What is the solution?

Himalayan Salt Himalayan salt is believed to be the purest salt found on Earth. It is an ancient rock found in the Himalayan mountains.

Around 250 million years ago, this salt was covered with lava, then later, concealed with

ice. This preserved all its nutrients, whilst protecting it from impurities. It is untouched by many of the toxins and pollutants present in other forms of salt, making it a far superior and healthier option.

It is well-documented that eating too much regular salt is bad for your health; however, this is where Himalayan salt comes into its own. It contains the same 84 natural trace minerals and elements found in the human body. It wreaks havoc on the circulatory, nervous and lymph systems, and is specifically hard on the liver, thyroid and kidneys as those organs try to process and remove the synthetic toxins from our body which are unable to absorb.

Unfortunately, it is used in abundance in processed food. Too much of this kind of salt is toxic to our bodies and it's best to stay away from it as much as possible. The issue is not actually about limiting our intake of salt; it’s about consuming more natural, home-made, whole foods and using the right kind of salt; Sea Salt Proper sea salt is 100% pure salt, which already makes it a much better choice than table salt. However, our oceans are polluted and getting worse every year. Community Project This year all students at Warblington school will be taking part in the Community Project. The idea behind the project is to raise the profile of the school in the community whilst ‘giving back’ to the community. Each year group has a different focus and the idea is that the students develop their leadership and teamwork skills via organising and running different events As part of the school Community Project the Year 9’s raised £382 for MacMillan Cancer Support through a tombola, sweet sale and Christmas Jumper Day. They also designed Christmas Cards which were hand delivered to the local residents, along with nursing homes in the area. In some cases, this was the only card the residents received and they were very

grateful to be thought of.

They also took part in collecting presents for the Wave 105 Mission Christmas which gives gifts to children in the region who would not necessarily receive a present at Christmas. “We were glad to make these children’s Christmas Special, as 60% of British people live under the poverty line and we felt this should be changed” said Courtney Myhill, Cassady Brooks and Cara Jeffery who were involved in the collection of over 100 gifts.

Some of our students spent two weeks wrapping presents and preparing games to use at the Pre-School for their Christmas Party.

On the day, 6 representatives went to the Pre-School, helped out with a range of games and dressed up as Santa's Elves to deliver presents to all of the children.”

The Wizard of Oz During the last week of term Warblington School came together to produce the production of Wizard of Oz. Ms Wilkins and the Catering students were busy making mince pies in Food Technology, whilst Mrs K Whiteley-Fuller was producing the program along with students in English.

Mr Knight and Mr Charles from Information & Communication Technology were working hard with students to produce the lighting and sound for the show, whilst the Performing Arts team were busy keeping the cast calm for the opening night!

Charlotte Bruce (Year 9) as Dorothy led the audience on a magical journey to find the Tin Man (Harry McClean,Year 10), the Lion (Charlie Chapman,Year 8) and the Scarecrow (Libby Place,Year 9), encountering the Wicked Witch (Olivia Shaw,Year 10) along the way.

All elements of the show were produced by students from Years 7 to 11 and together they created a seamless production full of grace and humour.

Mrs Whiteley-Fuller, Miss Blundell and Mrs Elvy would like to say a massive congratulation to all of the cast and crew for their hard work in putting together such a successful event.

AIR AMBULANCE FUND TRAINING

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA), in partnership with University

Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS), has committed to fund the first four years of a Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM) training programme for Doctors in the Wessex Deanery, which includes Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

“Working alongside our Paramedics, our PHEM Doctors are able to carry out procedures ranging from open heart surgery to amputation, providing a further depth of medical knowledge and the ability to carry

out additional medical procedures before the patient reaches hospital.”, commented HIOWAA CEO Alex Lochrane Fiona Dalton, Chief Executive of UHS, said: “We have formed a fantastic relationship with HIOWAA over a number of years and we are delighted to partner with them again on this excellent development for clinicians and patients across the south of England.

“This news follows recent announcements of a significant increase in survival for patients who have suffered major trauma in the region. HIOWAA’s

recent pledge to fund a PHEM training programme for Doctors will ensure that the charity continues to remain at the cutting edge of pre-hospital care.

It has been two years since the Work Out Your Money team, Citizens Advice Havant, have been delivering their financial capability programme in secondary schools in the Havant, Leigh Park and Waterlooville areas. Their partner schools have grown in number and widened in area to recently include a secondary school in Fareham and a home education group in Southampton.

Educating 11-16 year olds to manage their money effectively from a young age is such a crucial life skill.

Fiona Ross, Money Mentor with Work Out Your Money, explains the importance of operating a savings account from a young age. A MyBank's Annual Saver Survey of 1116 year olds showed nearly two thirds are not saving money at a bank or building society despite 74% of young people stashing on average £3.41 a week1. Our programme provides a lesson for Year 7 and 8 which deals exactly with this issue. The fun and interactive lesson helps these students build awareness of the money they have available to them and how some of it can be saved to fund future aspirations. It doesn’t matter how little they get, it is how they manage it that is important. These skills can be transferred to budgeting when they are older.

We have been very fortunate to work with Havant Academy, The Bourne Community School, Horndean Technology College, Crookhorn College, Warblington School and Oaklands Catholic School, with bookings from new schools up to July 2017.

So far we have reached 1300 students from Year 6 to Year 11.

We can tailor our delivery to suit the school time table. Some schools opt to have a PSHE/Citizenship day, whilst others factor it in to their time table for either Citizenship or Maths. Student feedback is so valuable to us. The students tell us that they enjoy having someone ‘from outside’ delivering the sessions. They love how practical the lessons are and how they will use the information and skills learned, in the near

future. The teachers comment on how engaging and relevant the sessions are and all of the schools we have worked with have invited us back.

We are keen to develop new partnerships with secondary schools in the area, particularly Hayling Island and East Hampshire. The Childhood of a Leader From the opening shot of a train speeding accompanied by the haunting music, I was gripped by this film.

The title gives it away as to what the film is mainly about, but it’s still really worth seeing.

The performances are superb all round.

The cinematography is stuffy and atmospheric to go along with the period trappings. It is a really well made film. I read about it being a horror as well as a historical drama, and I have to say, you would be forgiven to think that it is a horror because of the score. It’s also an interesting film, which doesn’t let up. At times it can be a bit too stagy, almost like the actors are on stage, but that is a very minor thing compared to the rest of the film, which is exquisite.

If you like historical dramas or just dramas in general or historical films, then you’ll really enjoy this, like I did.

The Childhood of a Leader is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray. Captain America:The Winter Soldier I was let down by the first Captain America movie, which I thought was overhyped. It wasn’t as good as I was led to believe by the reviews.

However, this, the sequel was even more hyped. I have to say, I went with the hype as well on this one and I came away thinking that it’s a better film than the original. The original, for me, had some sub-par action sequences which really looked like they were filmed in front of green screen. I was sad about that because I thought that Marvel would have better special effects then. Then I watched The Winter Soldier. The effects in this are phenomenal; the action is breath-taking. It’s a great action film. Go just for the action and you will be pleasantly surprised. Now, I’m not really up to date with watching each instalment in the Marvel phases, but this made me want to watch more of them. I would really recommend this movie if you like greatly choreographed action scenes.

Electricity is a British film which follows a woman who has epilepsy and her journey to find her brother in the city.

I had no expectations going in to this film, but I was amazed at how good it is. This film deserves praise. It’s got great performances, the story is interesting and the cinematography is sometimes breath-taking. I also love the experimental touches the director uses to evoke the epileptic shocks that the main character has.

A problem I had with it, though, was that it got a bit soap operatic near the end, but other than that, it’s a fine film, which I would recommend.

Savage Streets I love exploitation movies. This, for me, is pure exploitation of the 80’s kind. Linda Blair (The Exorcist) stars in this exploitation classic.

The story follows her, as she wreaks revenge on a group of punks who abused and sent her friends to hospital or to the morgue.

This is a really good movie. It has that 80’s vibe, especially the first scenes which establish all the characters. I loved the start where it shows the ladies all dressed up, walking the pavement at night. The film has a nasty rape sequence, where the punks each take turn to rape a woman in a gym.

However, it’s not as brutal or nasty as I Spit on Your Grave or any other films of that nature. It is tame in terms of that.

The revenge side of things wasn’t as gory as I thought it would be, but it was nice seeing the punks punished for what they did.

They are so horrible, and the movie does serve out the justice well. It is a bit over the top how one woman is able to take out these guys, but for wish fulfilment, it’s great.

You are there cheering the woman on.

I loved this movie. It’s pure 80’s exploitation rape-revenge fodder, but served up with a nice atmosphere and a weirdly absent sleaze quotient. It’s not at all sleazy.

It’s brightly lit (well, for the most part, the ending takes place at night. It’s a really fun movie. Plus, I like the artwork on the new release of the DVD, with its grindhouse cover. It’s a great movie, I’d really recommend this if you like revenge films.

So far this year we’ve had the Golden Globes and the National Television Awards to gather fashion inspiration from. There are some stand out trends to work with and the high-street stores are bursting with Spring colours and textures. I’ve selected a few of my favourite red carpet looks and included more budget friendly versions.

Giuliana Rancic looked like a Disney princess on the red carpet at the Golden Globes.

Floral is a massive trend this season and teamed with the dusky pink background and metallic belt, seoozes chic.

This pretty floral A Line skirt is a more wearable and can be teamed with a cropped turtle neck if you’re blessed with a tiny tummy, or with a sleeveless ruffle blouse for a feminine look.

From babes in arms to the elderly, professionals and the homeless, all came together in an act of true community and shared a special day of entertainment, companionship and a veritable Christmas feast.

There was laser quest and inflatables for those with plenty of energy, films and newspapers for those who preferred a quieter time. All came together for a meal and there was plenty of good conversation and camaraderie.

A highlight was a surprise visit from Santa Claus, just before he returned to the North Pole for a well-earned rest. Santa brought with him gifts for everyone, both young and old.

Christmas day is not a happy day for everyone for all sorts of reasons, and can often highlight feelings of loneliness, isolation or economic hardship. It was with this in mind that the Christmas Day lunch was held with an open invitation. There were plenty of smiles and even a few belly laughs from many who might have otherwise found the day a struggle.

The event was organised by Sara and Barney Barron in partnership with Park Community School. Barney and Sara are community ministers in the PO9 area. Their role is part of an initiative by Portsmouth Anglican Diocese to serve local communities. They connect with those who find it difficult to engage with traditional models of the Church.

The day was made possible with generous funding from the Big Lottery Fund. A huge thank you to Waitrose in Havant for donating high quality food through their Community Matters Scheme, and Postcode Publications for funding gifts for everyone so that no one went without a present to open on Christmas Day. There was also overwhelming support from the staff at Park Community School. Susan Parish (Business and Community Manager) helped fundraise and organise, and Steve Cross (Chef) and his team helped with food.

Members of the teaching staff, support staff, governors and students, alongside other members of the local community, helped on the day with cooking, serving, giving lifts and offering a warm welcome to all.

Fundraising for a special Community July 2017 will see a group of students from Park Community School, visit and work in one of the poorest communities in the world for the second time. The link with Tanzania has come about through a partnership with the Grassroots charity.

Grassroots run a child sponsorship programme for over 3,000 children. This vital sponsorship enables them to go to school, get free medical care and a nutritious weekly meal.

Each person going, including staff, are paying a proportion of the cost of the visit and fundraising for the rest. Through hard work and determination the students have raised over £8,000. This has been achieved through activities such as bag packing, carwashes and cake sales. Students created little elf door decorations for Christmas, these were sold to raise more money also.

We need to raise another £7,000 to reach our target. Any support in running fundraising events or donations would be gratefully received, we are determined to achieve our goal and realise this amazing opportunity for our students.
