Celebrating 50 years of campaigning Local charities benefit from for the Hampshire countryside fascinating skills workshop!

The Earl of Malmesbury, President of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) in Hampshire hosted a reception at Avington Park near Winchester in September to celebrate 50 years of the charity’s work in protecting the Hampshire countryside and its landscape heritage.

CPRE Hampshire works across the

county at a grass-roots level to protect and enhance a beautiful, thriving countryside for everyone to value and enjoy.

We believe that one of the best ways to encourage urban regeneration and prevent urban sprawl in the south of the county is to create a tract of Green Belt along the north side of Fareham, Portsmouth and Southampton, creating a buffer for the South Downs National Park and around Eastleigh and the south of Winchester to the New Forest National Park.”

The Earl of Malmesbury thanked Sarah Bullen for allowing the charity to use the venue for the occasion acknowledging the support of NFU Mutual for their sponsorship of the event.

CPRE Hampshire has a branch office in Winchester run by a small staff team and is active across the county with six voluntary district groups.

A group of charities based in and around the Havant area took part in a motivational presentation to help inspire, get more done and stop procrastination.

The session was part of Community First’s Skill Share Scheme where businesses pass on their skills and expertise to the voluntary and charity sector. explore new ways of thinking to overcome challenges and understand the only person who gets in our way is ourselves".

The majority of community groups attending were from the Havant area including participants from the management teams of Citizens Advice Havant and Growing Places at Mill Hill. Citizens Advice Lesley Rose, Advice Services Manager for Citizens Advice Winchester District looks at your rights if you have a housing-related problem and dealing with your landlord.

Q. I have a problem with rising damp in my flat, but I’m worried that if I complain my landlord will evict me. What should I do?

A. Until recently, landlords could evict tenants without a reason. However, a new law passed last year means it’s now illegal to evict tenants for reporting a problem with the property.

Start by checking your contract for when your tenancy began. If it was on or after 1 October 2015, you are protected from eviction provided you report the problem using the right procedure.

First, write your landlord an email or letter explaining the problem. If they don’t respond within 14 days or respond with an eviction notice, contact the council who will inspect the property.

If the Council confirms with the landlord that there is a health and safety problem, any ‘no fault’ eviction notice is invalid and you won’t need to leave the property. The council will also advise the landlord on next steps, which could include being legally required to fix the problem.

If your tenancy began before October 2015 it’s not illegal for your landlord to evict you but it’s still unusual to do so.

Again, you should start by raising the problem in writing. If your landlord doesn’t offer to repair the damp, or serves you with an eviction notice, contact your local Citizens Advice straight away who will advise you on your next step.

Report on my work locally and in Westminster Christmas is nearly upon us, so I can reflect on another busy year in both Westminster and Havant.

It has been great to see so many of you at the three community events that I have organised in 2016. Following the successful Jobs & Apprenticeships Fair in February and my Small Business Awards in April, I was delighted that my first Older Persons’ Information Fair in October proved just as popular.

The Fair was designed to bring together the many local businesses, charities and community groups that help or serve older people, from the NHS to the Rotary Club. I am determined to help every older person live a secure, independent and active life.

Like I reported in the previous edition, I also had the chance to welcome two more government ministers to Havant to showcase some success stories at grassroots level. Housing Minister Gavin Barwell met Bedhampton mum-of-two Jodie Reddin who has recently bought a house using the Government’s “Help to Buy” shared ownership scheme.

In Leigh Park, Nick Gibb, the Schools Minister, was given a tour of Havant Academy, the most improved school in England thanks to the academisation policy that has given underachieving schools fresh impetus. We met pupils who are delighted by the new school building and great classroom facilities which has transformed their learning experience.

In Westminster, I led the first ever

Commons debate on the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), a relatively new term that describes the new wave of new technology that’s affecting how we live and work.

Some Havant-based firms are already at the cutting edge of developing 4IR technology, including businesses such as defence contractor Lockheed Martin and Dream 3D, a new business selling 3D printers on Harts Farm Way. I called on the Government to back businesses like these, so Britain becomes a world leader in the field. I’m proud that local businesses are already leading the way.

‘Material Change in Circumstances’?

Repeat Applications for Homelessness Assistance When making a homelessness application to the Local Authority (the Council) they are under a duty to accept your application and make proper enquires if there is a chance you may meet the criteria.

The case of R (on the application of Aweys & Others) v Birmingham City Council states that the threshold for who might have the criteria for homelessness assistance is very low.

If the council believe there is a chance you meet the five criteria below, then they are under a duty to accept and application from you and make proper enquiries before returning a decision. The five criteria are: 1. Are you eligible for homelessness assistance- do you meet the immigration and ‘habitual residence’ test?

2. Are you Homeless or threatened with Homelessness? Remember; the legal definition of homelessness includes people who are temporarily being put up with friends or are ‘sofa surfing’.

3. Do you have a ‘priority need’- a medical condition or vulnerability that means you are in need of special assistance? Are you pregnant or look after children?

4. Have you made yourself ‘intentionally homeless’? Often the most challenged aspect of homelessness applications, the Council will determine whether you have done something intentionally to make you lose your home.

5. Do you have a ‘local connection’? Do you have ties to the Council area where you are applying? Have you lived in the area for some time? Do you have family there? Do you work in the area?

If the council decide you do not meet the criteria above then you have the chance to ask them to review their decision. If they decide on review that you still do not meet the criteria, what do you do? Can you make another application and hope the Council will change their mind?

The Legislation surrounding homelessness application does not give a maximum number of times a single person can apply, neither does it set a minimum interval for when applications can be made.

However, in the recent case of R (on the application of Hoyte) v London Borough of Southwark the High Court ruled that Councils in the UK only need to accept a repeat application where there has been a ‘material change in circumstances’.

This means that if you attempt to make

another homelessness application to the Council and your circumstances haven’t changed, then the Council is allowed to rely on their previous decision. It is the logic that having decided that you did not meet the criteria once, without a change in circumstances (or a change in the law), you will not meet the same criteria again.

So what is a ‘material change in circumstances’? We’ll take Mrs Hoyte from the case above as an example. Mrs Hoyte had made a homelessness application to the council and gave medical evidence to show she was at “quite a high” risk of suicide. The Council made the decision that Mrs Hoyte did not meet the criteria for being in ‘priority’ need; the third test above. Mrs Hoyte made a review of the decision but failed.

Later on, Mrs Hoyte went to her GP who produced another report stating that she was at higher risk of suicide than was thought previously. She made another application to the Council and gave this new medical evidence to show that she should now meet the criteria for ‘priority need’. The Council refused to accept her application as they stated they already knew about her suicidal tendencies and that this new application was essentially identical to the previous one they had turned down.

On appealing to the High Court, the court gave the decision that this change in her medical evidence was a ‘material change in circumstances’ and the Council had a duty to accept her new application.

Other material changes in circumstances could be: • You have become pregnant • You have been diagnosed with a new health condition • You have now been served with a warrant of eviction- where you hadn’t before • Your friends or family are no longer able to house you • You are now responsible for looking after children- where you weren’t before Have the Council refused to take a homelessness application from you? Do you think that something’s different than before?

It all boiled down to the final match of the season for Hayling Island CC 1st XI. A victory would ensure they maintain their Hampshire Cricket League County Division One status but, as the four teams occupying the relegation spots below them were playing each other on the last weekend, defeat could mean relegation. Sadly, that is what occurred.

Despite that, skipper Mike Lever can hold his head high, having lead from the front. On top of his 15 wicket haul, he has, for the first time, broken the 500 barrier with 561 runs in the season. Mike Hallett (427) and Gary Martin (347) have been his most stalwart support on the batting front,

this pair adding an unbroken third wicket stand of 270 in one game. On the bowling front, Dave Wayman has lead the way with 21 wickets.

The 2nd XI reached the giddy heights of table toppers but finished eight in Regional Division Two South. Due to the league undergoing restructuring, they are likely to be in a higher division in 2017. “Josey” Wells proved a fine acquisition making 401 runs in just seven innings. The “man beast” that is Jason Longhurst finished streets ahead in the bowling with 25 wickets.

Sunday’s saw the HICC’ers in more relaxed mode; “Steelers Sticklebacks” are a happy little bunch and who had a brief season all the briefer, sadly, by the seeming loss of interest in people turning out to play friendly cricket, not only for Hayling but for our opponents as well; five games were called off due to lack of numbers. I have seen this trend across the south-east and at HICC, we will look to reverse it when our

Come January 16th 2017, we will be netting at Warblington School between 7:30pm and 9:00pm with nets scheduled for every Monday up to the 22nd April. HEALTH & WELLBEING “I'm a carpenter and so I spend a lot of time going up ladders, bending and kneeling. I think this is putting a strain on my knees as I’ve been experiencing a lot of pain recently. What can I do to relieve the pain? Do I need surgery?”

Many tradesmen are prone to developing knee pain throughout their career due to the nature of the trade. A modern day carpenter typically spends a significant amount of time kneeling, using ladders and pivoting and twisting in confined environments – which can put strains on certain structures within the knee. Carpenters are renowned to develop problems with their patellofemoral joint (the interaction of the knee cap with the femur). protect your knee for the rest of your career. This can be done by taking an accurate history, examining the knee and diagnostics which usually take the form of x-ray and/or an MRI scan. These investigations provide information which, along with support of your clinical findings will mean the correct treatment strategy is implemented.

Not all knee pain cases will require surgery as some conditions will self-resolve with anti-inflammatories and physiotherapy.

For patients with more persistent symptoms that require surgery, arthroscopy (key-hole surgery) will usually be performed, most commonly in people with unstable meniscal (cartilage/shock absorber) tears which are unable to heal without surgical intervention. The under surface of the knee cap can also become roughened by the continual impact and grow extremely painful, which can also benefit from keyhole surgery.

In addition to the above, there are multiple other treatment strategies involved in alleviating symptoms - injection therapy and steroid or hyaluronic acid (lubricant) are extremely effective in the right conditions. The use of orthotics (knee supports) also have a function depending on the diagnosis.

I would strongly recommend that if you are a carpenter struggling with knee pain which has not resolved within a 4 week period you seek an expert knee opinion. An accurate diagnosis and treatment plan can then be implemented to help you work more efficiently and prevent any long term damage which can affect your career.

ST FAITHS FACES CHANGE Following the successful campaign by Postcode Publications to raise funds and find a contractor to renew the clock faces on St Faiths church in the heart of PO9, work is now complete.

The refurbished east and south clock faces were replaced on 29th September 2017 by skilled steeplejacks suspended on a bosuns chair from scaffolding secured on the church roof.

Once again the clock shows time clear to see, and chimes return to sound the hours between 07am and 11pm.

Pirate mural goes down a storm at Victorious Festival

James Waterfield, Art Teacher at Park ran a mural workshop with hundreds of young festival goers. Based on a pirate theme, the mural was huge in the region of 40ft long and was really popular in the kid’s arena. Several PCS staff and Park students came up and painted with us. The response was awesome and we were thrilled with the final result.

Lee also has his own TV show, Lee Nelson’s Well Good Show (BBC Three), and has appeared many times on BBC One’s Live at the Apollo.

This work in progress show is a unique opportunity to see Lee perform some brand new material and, to quote Lee, “for not much money, before it’s any good” If that didn’t convince you, then we don’t know what will!

As soon as the festive season arrives we tend to purchase drinks we never buy the rest of the year. The more obscure liqueurs, sherry and port, all the seasonal favourites tend to fly off the shelf. Christmas is a time of year when we tend to spoil ourselves when it comes to tipples, once we do the annual rummage through the drinks cabinet to see what we have left over and to see if it is still drinkable. The odd colour liquids in bottles at the back, trying to remember what it is and what decade we purchased it.

And if you are very brave, tasting it to see if it passes.

When it comes to wine I try and advise my customers as much as possible to go for something different, something that they have not tried before but knowing they will enjoy it.

Christmas is a time to share with friends and family so it’s important to get the festive food and drink right. Moliere, the 17th century French playwright and actor once said ‘Great is the fortune of he who possesses a good bottle, a good book and a good friend’. He knew the importance of these simple things in life.

Depending on the chosen dish this Christmas day, whether its game, or turkey or something else, choosing the right wine will take your cooking to the next level.

Having said this, I always tell my customers that you drink what you want with whatever you are eating. Wine is all about personal choice, it’s all about getting maximum enjoyment out if and the one thing to remember is that if you like the wine you have purchased then it’s a good one, no matter what you paid.

Choosing wines to match the food will make it more enjoyable and by following a

The most common guide line that most of us know is white wine with fish and red wine with meat. White meats however match perfectly with soft, dry white wines like Chardonnay or Viognier. These wines tend have less acidity, (the sharpness in dry whites) and have a much more tropical fruit character as opposed to more citrus fruit. These styles of wines pair perfectly with fish dishes and make a perfect starter wine. If you want reds with your turkey then go for lighter, softer reds such as Pinot Noir.

Heavy game dishes like goose require much fuller reds like a good rustic Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz or a Reserva Rioja, full of oak characters. Australian Cabernets and Shiraz are more fruit driven, whereas from Europe they tend to be drier and earthier. Also think about any sauces you may have as these will be a dominant flavour of your dish.

Sweet wines, finish off the meal perfectly. If you are like me and love Christmas pudding, then a rich sweet white from anywhere will pair perfectly. This will marry with some cheeses as well but the favourite Christmas tipple for this part of the meal is Port.

Whatever your preferred choice, Christmas is a time to treat yourself as well as others.

Autumnal flavours Beetroot and Apple soup

Here is a low carbohydrate, high fibre soup packed full of flavour. The ingredients have been roasted to intensify the flavours.

A perfect Halloween starter! Beetroot easily stains, use latex or disposable gloves when preparing the beetroot to prevent this. Peel and Roughly chop beetroot

Ingredients (for 6- 8 servings) 900g raw beetroot 2/3 eating apples 1 vegetable stock cube 1.5- 2 litres water Small pot of yoghurt if desired Leaves of parsley or coriander for garnish Method: 1. Wash and trim beetroot and peel.

Roughly chop to similar size chunks. Place in large roasting pan with olive oil drizzled onto base.

Season with pepper and salt. Cook on fan oven at 180 for 20 minutes.

2. Wash apples, quarter and remove core. Roughly chop to similar size chunks. Add apple to the cooked beetroot and ½ litre of vegetable stock and mix well. Roast for 10 minutes.

3. Tip contents of roasting pan into large pot and add 1 litre boiling water (if you prefer a thinner soup add 1.5 litres). Puree with a hand blender and add additional seasoning if required.

4. Heat through and serve with a dollop of yoghurt and parsley or coriander leaf if desired.

AUCTIONEER & ANTIQUES ENTHUSIAST HILARY BOLT on CHRISTMAS RECIPES Over the last 20 years I’ve been lucky enough to turn a life-long interest in “old things” into my current day jobs – auctioneering in Emsworth Auctions and running an antiques & collectables shop, Emsworth Antiques Etc. in the town’s West Street.

The year is galloping along as usual, and with Christmas just round the corner, many of us are beginning to plan our traditional – and not-so-traditional – menus for ourselves and for festive entertaining. Which brings many of us to an abrupt standstill. Do we stick with the usual fare, or look for inspiration? And where to look?

I admit that there are plenty of recipes to be found online, but I love trawling through old recipe books myself – a bit like reading a map and being enchanted by the names of unvisited villages and nearby towns.

We’ve all heard of Mrs Beaton, but have you actually looked through one of her books? The Christmas illustrations are enough to scare you until Easter. But you can fairly easily adapt many of the old recipes for today’s dining – even if the quantities have to be quartered.

An early copy of Mrs Beeton’s Book of Household Management will cost you anything from £15 to £1,000.

That said, there are a great many other

sources of sauces (ahem!). How about: ‘Fish and How to Cook It’ by Mrs Peel published 1908 will cost c£10. ‘How to Cook in Casserole Dishes’ from 1912 might cost you c£8. Mrs Martineau’s ‘Cantaloupe to Cabbage; How To Cook and Serve Vegetables’, published in 1929 costs c£15.

‘Cooking Without a Cook. Selected Recipes from 'Homes and Gardens' Providing Simple Appetising & Economical Dishes for Every Season of the Year’. Published 1926, costs about £10.

And then, of course, from the aptly named Robert Cook (under Mr. Lamb), we have ‘Court Cookery: or, The Complete English Cook’ which could set you back a cool £2,500. And that’s for a second edition!

One of my favourite recipe books is by the wonderful Robin Howe who travelled the Middle East 60 or more years ago, gathering authentic recipes which are mouth-watering to read and delicious to eat.

My favourite is a dish called Imam Bayildi, which translates as “the Holy Man fainted’, apparently because it tasted overwhelmingly wonderful.

I offer it here (not that I would want to stop you getting your own copy of ‘Greek Cooking’ by Robin Howe), because it is the perfect antidote to an over-indulgent Christmas. It is vegetarian and can be eaten hot or cold.

IMAM BAYILDI (To serve 6) (The Holy Man Swooned with Delight) 6 Aubergines (long rather than fat if poss.)

3 Large Peeled and Chopped Tomatoes Salt A Couple of Handfuls of Well Chopped Parsley Generous Qty Olive Oil Juice of 1 Lemon Crushed Garlic Cloves to taste 2 Sliced Tomatoes & 3 Chopped Onions 1. Slit deeply down the length of aubergines leaving 1cm at each end. Ensure the slit doesn’t go through Imam Bayildi the skin. a delicious antidote to seasonal over-indulgence 2. Rub salt into the slits and leave for 45mins-1 hour, then squeeze the aubergines until juice stops running out & wipe inside the slit with kitchen towel to remove the last of the salt 3. Heat c1/2cm olive oil in a pan and add the aubergines, turning them every so often so the surface softens.

4. Lay the aubergines to one side and fry the garlic and chopped onions until golden and soft 5. Mix the onions in a bowl with the chopped tomatoes, parsley and lemon juice, and stuff the aubergines with this mix, pressing it well into the slits (add salt and pepper if you wish) 6. Put the aubergines in a baking dish, stuffed slits uppermost and lay on a couple of tomato slices. Cover and cook at a medium heat until they are quite soft – about 45mins.

7. Serve either hot with rice or sautéed potatoes or quite cold as a salad or sliced up as a mezze. A versatile dish to which you can add meat or cheese, garnish with Mediterranean herbs, etc.

Christmas roses (Helleborus niger) flower better and earlier with a little protection from a cloche.

Hellebores hate being disturbed but if you must move one this is the best time. Lift it with a good large ball of soil around the roots.

This year’s Open Evening was a wonderful success, with nearly 200 families looking around the school. This was a great opportunity for Year 5 and 6 pupils to make friends and see what their next school could be like.

Around the school visitors were able to experience such things as a taster of literary delights and language exploration in English; a range of experiments, including static spheres

and exciting fireball creations in Science and the Maths Department allowed you to take part in the 2016 Maths Challenge and a computer simulation “Walk the Graph”.

In the History area were genuine gas masks on display and the Geography Department had a food quiz, jigsaws and modelling clay activities.

The Arts Department offered a showcase of previous student work, whilst painting props and set for the upcoming show of The Wizard of Oz.

If visitors were feeling a little peckish, Food and Nutrition were showing off their culinary talents with tasting available and MFL offered a language quiz with tasty European rewards.

It was also possible to try a range of activities in our new Sports Hall, Gym and Dance Studio.

This was a wonderful evening and we are looking forward to meeting our new students next year.

CRAFT BEERS – Enjoy your local ales Belgian Beers Belgium is a small country with a population of only 11.2 million. Many people pass through Belgium on their way to the Netherlands, Germany or Scandinavia but never stop to appreciate the splendid medieval architecture of Flemish cites such as Bruges and Ghent. Another thing they are missing out on is the wonderful Belgian beer. The craft beer revival which started in the USA in the 1980’s has spread to many countries. In Belgium they claim the whole craft brewing concept was never lost and they have been continuously brewing a wide range of distinctive artisanal beers for hundreds of years. My interest in beer began many years ago when on holiday in Belgium. I was intrigued by the vast range of styles of beer available in supermarkets and began trying the many different brews. There are around 180 different breweries in Belgium many of whom make very distinctive local beers. I have been sampling some of the many Belgian beers that are available in the UK are here are a few of my recommendations.

Smiske Bruin Nature Ale 7% abv.

This is a bottle fermented (Real ale) Brown ale which pours a cloudy mid brown colour. The aroma reminds one of malt drinks. It is a smooth tasting beer despite being quite high in alcohol with almost a cappuccino type taste. Very different from the old fashioned British brown ales, if you can still find them. It is made by Smiske Brewery who are a small family business based near Oudenaarde which is to the south of Ghent.

Dupont Saison 6.5% abv.

Saisons are beers that were originally brewed in farmhouses in the winter. The beer was then used throughout the year for farmworkers. The style is

now used to denote a traditional beer from the Hainault region of Belgium. It pours a cloudy golden colour and has a grassy aroma. The taste is slightly tart which makes it a very refreshing beer. Dupont have been brewing Saison since 1844 at Tourpes which is also to the south of Ghent.

Lindemans Faro Lambic 4.5% abv.

This is something for the person who wants to try a beer that is really different. For a start it is naturally fermented with wild yeasts and is barrel aged. It was only in the latter part of the C19 that scientists were able to isolate yeast and develop strains specifically for brewing. Prior to then all beer was naturally fermented by the wild yeasts that are in the air. Faro pours a copper colour and has a slightly lemon aroma. The mouth feel is somewhere between cider and wine with a very tart acidic flavour. This is a very refreshing drink but not one for conservative beer drinkers.

Lindemans have been brewing traditional lambic beers since 1822 at their Vlezenbeek brewery which is to the southwest of Brussels.

Witkap Pater Dubbel Bruin 7% abv.

This is a strong Belgian Brown Abbey style bottle conditioned beer. It pours a cloudy mid brown colour with a malty aroma. It has a yeasty caramel flavour and a creamy consistency. Apparently

it goes well with Belgian chocolate desserts. It is brewed by the Slaghmuylder Brewery at Ninove, which is west of Brussels. This family run business has been brewing since 1860.

Rodenbach Grand Cru 6% abv.

Rodenbach is a Flanders Sour Red beer. This is a barrel aged beer and it is made up of 2/3rd beer matured for two years in massive oak barrels and 1/3rd new beer. It pours a rich ruby colour and has a tart green apple aroma. The beer has a somewhat acetic flavour and many would consider it quite sour but it is a complex drink with subtle flavours coming from the barrel ageing.

Rodenbach is a very refreshing drink once you get used to the initial sour taste.

Many beer critics rate this as one of the great beers of all time. It is brewed in Roeselare which is south of Bruges. It is owned by the Belgian Palm brewery group.

Bourgogne des Flandres Brown/Lambic mix 5% abv.

This is a mixture of Belgian Brown ale and naturally fermented lambic beer. It pours a dark copper colour with a caramel aroma. The taste is complex, sweet and sour with a cherry undertone.

This is quite tart but not as sour as the lambic beers.

This is another very refreshing beer. It is brewed by Timmermans Brewery at Itterbeek near Brussels.

BEER NEWS The Oakleaf Brewery, Gosport has gone into administration. This was quite a large brewery who had a brewery tap/shop in Gosport and also owned two pubs in Portsmouth. They were founded in 2000 and brewed a very wide range of cask and bottled beers. I enjoyed their beers particularly their IPA which I reviewed for Postcode Publications in September 2015.

The Great British Beer Festival (GBBF) 2016 was held at Olympia, London in August. I attended the Press Day and was very impressed with the event. There were 27 bars offering over 900 different beers including some from USA, Belgium, Germany, France and even Malta. If you like trying different beers then the 2017. GBBF will be held at Olympia from 8 -12 August 2017. The overall winner at GBBF 2016 was Binghams Vanilla Stout which is brewed in Berkshire.

We are likely to see more American beers in our shops and specialist bars in the future. At present the UK is a net exporter of beer to the US with exports at over 191 million pints compared with imports of only 14 Million pints. I recently attended a beer and food pairing event in London organised by the US Brewers Association and was very impressed by the range of beers offered. Gose, Kolsch, Saison, Black Lager, Alt and a massive 12% abv. Imperial Stout were just a few of the amazing US brewed beers that were sampled. Although many British breweries are now offering heavily hopped US style Pale Ales with their distinct citrus flavours, US brewers offer a far wider range of styles and strengths of beer than we get in the UK. We may have over 1600 craft breweries but many are only brewing a limited range of bitter/golden/IPA styles. If, like me, you enjoy trying new styles of beer then look out for US brands such as Sierra Nevada and Harpoon which are currently available in the UK.

Havant Symphony Orchestra will once again present a season of three concerts at Oaklands School in Waterlooville for 2016-17 and the first, on 3rd December at 7.30pm, features the Concerto for Viola by William Walton.

It’s pretty unusual for the viola to be featured as a solo instrument so this will be a rare event! The soloist on this occasion will be Shiry Rashkovsky.

Somme Battlefields Tour The Mayor of Havant has organised a three day visit to the Somme battlefields in France.

Councillor Faith Ponsonby and Mr Michael Ponsonby, Mayor and Mayor’s Consort of Havant, have arranged and paid for themselves to visit France to witness the battlefields where the Battle of Somme took place.

They would like to open the invite for others to join them on this moving journey, between Friday 31st March and Sunday 2nd April 2017.

During the trip a wreath-laying ceremony will take place at the Thiepval Memorial, as well as providing an opportunity to visit other places of interest in the surrounding area of the Somme battlefields.

Charles Haskell, founder of the WW1 Remembrance Centre currently located in Fort Widley, Portsmouth, will be leading the visit.

The cost is £225 per person based on two people sharing a double or twin room (with a £67 supplement for single rooms) which includes breakfast. A small deposit will be required on booking, and the remaining balance will be due by 25th January 2017.

Community Grants for Community Matters Havant Borough Council has now approved a Community Grant Scheme which will see each of its Councillors having access to £1,000 to distribute to local projects and initiatives.

Each Councillor has been allocated funding for them to award to voluntary and not-for-profit organisations within, or that benefit, their ward with grants of either £100 or £200 being available.

Organisations that may benefit from the new Community Grant Scheme can approach their Ward Councillor and apply for funding. The grant scheme aims to ensure that communities can fund what is specifically important in their area.

The scheme will be piloted for the remainder of this financial year and if

successful, will be factored into the budget making process early in the New Year.

Councillor Turner, Cabinet Lead for Communities and Housing, said “There are many excellent groups throughout the borough who work hard to support local communities and people in need. With so many excellent groups working hard we are always faced with difficult decisions when considering funding applications. With this new scheme each Councillor will be able to make a difference within their own wards”.

It brings back lots of memories when I was a Physio at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

France’s Pauline FerrandPrévot was suffering from Sciatica leading up to Rio 2016. Sciatica is very common and very debilitating so today we will be offering some advice and exercises to help with Sciatica.

Sciatica * If you have any of the following symptoms, you should seek medical attention from a doctor immediately: Loss of feeling in the groin region or inner thighs, bowel or bladder disturbances, profound weakness in the legs * Sciatica affects many people including cyclists, builders, plasterers, office workers, gardeners to name a few, but many other people suffer too.

When the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated, it can cause pain, numbness and a tingling sensation that runs from your lower back down one of your legs to your foot and toes. However some people suffering from sciatica have no back pain, they could just have big toe pain.

The pain is usually aggravated by bending, sneezing, coughing, or sitting for a long period of time.

The best treatment for sciatica is hands on joint mobilisations, sciatic nerve mobilisations, massage, combined with exercises and advice. Acupuncture is another effective treatment for sciatica; we offer this at both of our clinics.

What to do initially?

- Speak to your GP about appropriate pain control if the pain is intense and/or affecting your sleep, driving, or ability to work.

- Avoid staying in one position for any length of time - avoid sitting, it will make your pain worse.

• Don’t push through pain with activity or stretches as the underlying condition may worsen if you do too much.

Puppet Master 2 The second film in the ever-expanding series is a good sequel to the original. It’s almost as good, but not as quite. It has got some great FX, though and if you go into this film for the gore FX you will not be disappointed, and if you like B-movies then you will gain an extra kick from this film. I think this is better than the films that followed and the best film that followed was the third in the series. It went downhill after that, degenerating into really C-movies, however, all of them had, except for The Legacy, all have their certain charms. The story basically is nearly the same terrorising dolls from the first one; however this one has some different elements which I won’t spoil. Overall, I recommend it for those who like low-budget horror films.

The Bunnyman Resurrection In a lot of ways this is a generic slasher film, with the key ingredients of violence, gore and sex in it. But this knows what it is, what it wants to be, and does it well for a low budget independent. If you don’t like slasher films, then you’ll probably not like this, but if you are then I think you’ll be surprised at how entertaining this is. It’s certainly better than the first film, which also knew what it was doing but felt a lot like it was just setting things up for a better sequel, which this is. This one goes at the horror full-pelt and doesn’t let up. There’s also some good character development with Joe, the psychopath who helps the Bunnyman hunt people down. It think they did a good job of not allowing the audience to get to know

too much about the Bunnyman, though, because it, I feel, would have taken a lot of the tension out of the scenario of not knowing him, not knowing wha he could do, when he would appear. The gore is mostly of the CGI kind, which surprisingly works for this film and is quite good and used effectively. It’s not very scary as a whole, but it does have an atmosphere of helplessness and dread that was really effective in the Wrong Turn series. Acting wise, its not that great, a bit hammy at times and over-thetop, but its ok if the main reason youre watching is for the horror. All in all, it’s a well shot, good slasher flick which ticks all the boxes.

Dad’s Army I am not a fan of Dad’s Army, but I did enjoy the spin-off original film to the series.

It had some good laughs in it. This, I have to say, is minor league comedy. However, it is perfect family viewing when you just want to relax and enjoy a film which won’t test your knowledge very much, but will provide you with a bit of entertainment. The film started out really obvious, I think, with its basic gags. And overall, I think that the comedy is either hit-or-miss, really. I’d say that this is a fine film, a bit above average. I was expecting to not like it at all, but I found myself quite enjoying some scenes.

Toby Jones is great in his role, he really lives the part. However, at the start I didn’t really buy him doing comedy because I’ve seen him in his other dramatic roles. But I think some of his scenes did strike a much better cord comedy-wise. He had some of the funniest scenes.

Bill Nighy was great, like all of the actors, but he gave a more layered performance, his character being fleshed out more than the others, I think.

Catherine Zeta-Jones was great, also.

Her English accent was spot on after performing in a dozen American productions. It was great to have her in the cast to light up the screen.

When the film ended, the audience applauded. All in all, it is a fine film.

Suicide Squad I had not watched Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice before attending a screening of the superhero action fantasy film Suicide Squad. I had heard about the comics, but didn’t really know the story. I knew that it was about a team of super-villains, but nothing really else. Oh, and that the team featured the Joker and Harley Quinn. Other than that, I didn’t know what to expect. Mainly I wanted to have a fun time and to be entertained.

The story centres on a group of supervillains who are forced together to fight crime for the government. They each have a microchip implanted into their necks which means if they step out of line, the microchip can kill them.

Now, I have not read any of the Suicide Squad comics and have seen some bits of the Arkham games, so I was not really knowing what I was going to witness.

What I did see was a great superhero movie. I’m not very big on superhero movies, but I couldn’t pass on not liking this because the action and story and characterisation was so dark, superbly suiting the tone of the film. DC movies are much more adult than Marvel, having that dark atmosphere and themes to their films, and not even just films, their comics and games, as well, have a harder edge than Marvel do. Marvel tend to be a bit tongue-in-cheek with their humour, but DC has very little which is humorous. In fact, I didn’t laugh whilst watching this movie, and it doesn’t try to be a comedy. I found myself quickly falling in love with these characters. What was flawed, I think, was the back stories, some of them were lingered on, some of them sped past like they wanted to get to the main action

faster and didn’t care much about that certain character. I would have liked it more if they had made the backstories as long as each of the characters to get to know them better.

Plus, it was a bit obvious after introducing a character in the main plot line, showing a flashback to their life. That’s a minor niggle, mind you, because you can get past that.

Will Smith did an excellent job of Deadshot, the contract killer who has a great way with guns. I particularly liked his backstory where we find out how much he loves his child. Plus Batman has a nice cameo in his story, as well, which didn’t realise was going to happen.

Harley Quinn was one of my best characters, if not the best. As played by Margot Robbie she’s just absolutely brilliantly maniacal. I really liked when she was with the Joker. And yes, she was sexualised, she always is, either in comics games or (as now is the case) a movie. So you do get a lot of eye candy from Harley Quinn at a pole dancing club, for example. Also, it is meant for a more mature audience, hence the 15 rating. What I especially like about Harley Quinn is how she loves danger, and here she again flings herself into apparent doom, and is relishing every minute of it. Also, she does have one of the funniest scenes where she’s in an elevator fighting baddies and all the Squad are worried about her. When the door opens they see her standing there and are gobsmacked as she reacts like nothing happened. That was a bit funny.

Talking of the Joker, I was really sad about this. Jared Leto did an absolutely magnificent job of portraying the (in)famous villain, but his screen time was really short. It would have been great if we had seen more of him. I liked how he protected Harley Quinn.

Going in to this film I didn’t realise there were going to be some really dark aspects to this. Ok, this isn’t A Serbian Film, but when permanent death in a superhero film happens, which you are not expecting at all, it did rattle me a bit. I won’t say who dies, but it is a bit sad.

The effects are superb, apart from El Diablo’s fire, which is clearly computer generated, but could’ve been a lot worse. This is a flawed film, it’s not the best superhero film out there, but it’s really close. Now that I’ve seen this I really want to watch Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Hayling Island Bowls Club Family & Friends Day

The RNLI Hayling were our guests this year. In the morning Brian Pullan and Malcolm Tipton helped to get the Clubhouse ready. Neil Hook arrived with his BBQ and set up his cooking area on the patio. The Raffle prizes were sorted and numbered. Pauline Johns arrived with her wonderful 'Lifeboat' cake for her separate Raffle. The Club flag went up, the cushions came out and we were ready.

Guests, Members and families started arriving around 2.00pm.After a 'welcome' everyone joined in for the traditional Spider which was won by Malcolm Tipton. Brian Pullan organised teams of four with two guests playing in each team playing six ends. The players then changed to play Target Mat or Target Jacks. In the meantime other guests had a go at bowling on the other rinks. Meanwhile delicious

smells were wafting across from the BBQ and at 5.00pm it was ready to serve. As always it was delicious. This was followed by mouth watering desserts.

Each year the Club’s President chooses a charity that the Club will support. The Club runs a number of events to raise monies for that charity. This year the Club has raised £1250. Following the BBQ, President June Dick and Treasurer Geoff Belding presented our cheque of £1250 to Nigel Roper, Chairman of the RNLI Hayling, and he made a very nice 'thank you speech' and invited the Club to send a party down to the Lifeboat Station later in the year when they would be delighted to show us around.

Pauline's cake was won by Audrey Smith who in turn donated it to the RNLI Hayling Lifeboat Station for the crew.

Zoe Grant; our Volunteer Director, WON the Volunteer Manager of the Year

by Third Sector Awards at the Lancaster Hotel in London on September 14th. In total there were 300 entries submitted from more than 200 unique organizations across the UK. The awards recognized those who give back to the community and celebrate organisations and social leaders from across the charity and not for profit sector. There were four other people nominated in Zoe’s category (there are a total of 26 categories in total, including awards for teams, partnerships and campaigns). Zoe joined our charity in April of 2013 and has grown our volunteer numbers by 40%, from 456 to 638 in 2015.

In addition, Zoe was instrumental in helping secure a £100k 3 year Big Lottery Grant to develop this work beyond 2016.

Zoe said about the award: It is a privilege to receive the award. I am thrilled that the exceptional and unique experience we offer at Over The Wall camps has been recognized for it.

HAVANT CAMERA CLUB Havant Camera Club's new season has started. We meet every Tuesday until the end of May 2017 at the St. John Ambulance Brigade Headquarters, Fraser Road, opposite the Rugby Club. We have a varied programme of speakers and competitions, both within the Club and in the Southern Federation. I am looking forward to a talk called Creative Landscape Photography, as this is not an easy subject!

Our Set subjects will include Interiors, which should provide some interesting pictures, and there will of course be Open Competitions. It's not essential to enter Competitions, some members just come for the speakers! And we are now working towards the Members' Annual Exhibition, to be held in November in the Meridian Centre.

Postcode Publications UNA CHICHESTER DISTRICT Gulwali Passarlay is an Afghan refugee who was destined by the Taliban to become a suicide bomber.

Alone aged 12, he escaped into the hands of child traffickers, surviving horrifying ordeals as he journeyed through eight countries to arrive (on his 100th attempt) in the UK from Calais in 2007.

He was trafficked as a result of the US invasion of Afghanistan following 9/11. He arrived in the UK aged 13 and eventually found help, learning English, getting GCSEs and A levels and graduating in politics from Manchester University.

Now aged 22, Gulwali is a politics

graduate of Manchester University. He was asked to carry the Olympic torch through Bolton in 2012.

Gulwali is a Model Westminster Ambassador, and president of the United Afghan Peace Movement.

He was invited to represent the North West on the British Youth Council’s National Scrutiny Group whose task was to express the views of young people to government departments and ministers.

Gulwali aims to work as a UN negotiator and ultimately to run for the leadership of Afghanistan.

Having experienced the ordeals that refugees continue to endure today, Gulwali decided that his story had to be told. His book The Lightless Sky (Atlantic Books

2015) describes his harrowing journey and his eventual reception in the UK. He explores why people are leaving their countries and suggests how we should be treating them when they arrive here, and why.

face first, adding 1 part moisturiser if you want a softer look. *Be careful to avoid the hairline if you have fair hair. Wear gloves then add moisturiser to your hands and feet before you tan them and dry off nails with a tissue to avoid staining.

Once you’ve applied the tan stand and let it dry for a few minutes. Whilst it develops avoid putting on any restrictive clothing or getting the tan wet. The best time to tan is an hour before bed then rinse the product off in the morning. Do not scrub the guide colour tan off, use your hands to rub off the excess product in the shower.
