The Waterlooville Music Festival staged a remarkable 38 concerts in one week and entertaining more than 4,000 people.

Chairman of the organising committee, Mike Sheffield, said that the festival had exceeded expectations. “We have enjoyed such success with WMF over the past decade and this year was no different. We are delighted that so many people have attended the concerts and the workshops during the day even with the challenges of the good old British Summer weather and the competing interest of the football.”

The festival ended, as it always does, with a traditional, flag-waving and patriotic 'Last Night of

the Proms' with Meridian Wind Convert Band conducted by Don Lloyd. The band delighted the concert goers with a varied programme that included Rimsky Korsakov and John Williams’ Star Wars before ending with the traditional sequence that includes Edward Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance March No 1” (to part of which “Land of Hope and Glory" is sung) and Henry Wood’s “Fantasia on British Sea Songs", and ending with Thomas Arne’s “Rule Britannia”.

The evening also included a comedy interlude from “Hinge and Bracket” (played by Anne Morgan and Lindsay Gibson pictured left with Rod Starr – the Musical Director).

Both Scott and Ryan approached the challenge with an air of calm and were cool under pressure taking time to talk to all of the judges as we walked the kitchen. Their dedication and cookery skills really shone through in the final – well done boys!”

Support for Good Causes from Probus

‘At its June meeting members of Petersfield South Downs Probus Club (PSDPC) made generous donations to two Good Causes. Cheques of £400 were presented to Parkinson’s UK and to The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, this year’s nominated beneficiaries.

Alan Mak MP Report on my work locally and in Westminster I hope readers are having an enjoyable summer. Both my constituency and Westminster offices stayed busy throughout and I continued meeting residents and supporting community activities. Two major campaigns I’ve been leading have made good progress.

Firstly, I held productive talks to secure a new Emsworth Surgery at the old Victoria Cottage Hospital site. It’s an issue that’s been going on for over a decade and since being elected last May, I have been working hard to break the deadlock. Now, a bid of £4.4million has been made to NHS England to fund construction and I will be lobbying to make sure the money is delivered.

I organised a very positive meeting between the doctors, NHS organisations and local councillors to keep the pressure up. Progress is positive: the surveyor acting on behalf of the surgery has given the green light to the outline design of a new surgery building. There’s more work to be done, but I am hopeful a solution, which will be future proof for the next generation, has been found.

Secondly, my efforts to keep the Hayling Island tip open ended with success, following the decision by Hampshire County Council to save the recycling centre. The community campaign to keep the tip open was led alongside me by Islander Alison Wiltshire, who gathered 6,800 signatures against the closure. The decision by the county council is testament to the hard work by residents and shows what can be achieved through localism.

I was also heartened by news that unemployment in the UK last month fell to a fresh 11-year low – including in Havant where 85 fewer people are claiming benefits. One of those new employers is Pepperelli’s Wine Lounge on Hayling which I helped open in July.

In Westminster, I backed the government renewal of the Trident nuclear defence system as

it is absolutely vital we maintain our national security. I’m keeping up the pressure on Southern Rail to improve their services. After meeting trade unions leaders, I called on them to end their industrial action which is at the root of passengers’ delays.

I enjoyed visiting St James’ Primary School, Emsworth again, and then welcomed them for a tour of Parliament followed by a lively Q&A session. As a former school governor, I hope some of the children who visited can be inspired to be the politicians of the future.

I’m organising the constituency’s first Older Persons Information Fair, taking place at the Hayling Island Community Centre on Friday 14 October between 10AM-3PM. Admission and parking are free. It’s an opportunity for older people, carers, family, neighbours and friends to speak to a range of specialist organisations, businesses and community groups that serve or help older people, including AgeUK, the Citizens Advice Bureau and Hampshire County Council.

HOW TO STOP AN EVICTION? (PRIVATE LANDLORD) Most tenants in privately rented homes are assured shorthold tenants. They can be evicted quite easily, but landlords must follow the rules and procedures.

There are two ways a landlord can start the eviction process by using a: Section 21 notice – for eviction after the fixed term has ended - Landlords usually use the section 21 procedure to evict tenants. You get at least two month’s notice to leave.

Section 8 notice – for eviction at any time, including during any fixed term but only for specific reasons - Landlords may use the section 8 procedure if you have rent arrears or have broken the terms of your tenancy agreement (for example if you have damaged the property or caused a nuisance).

Your landlord has to apply to the court for a possession order if you do not leave by the date set out in the notice.

The court decides if you should be evicted.

A court will not order you to leave if the notice is not valid.

For section 21, there isn’t always a hearing.

The court can use the accelerated possession procedure to make a decision without a hearing.

This speeds up the eviction process when tenants don’t send a defence form to the court.

If the court decides you should leave, your landlord can apply to the court for bailiffs to evict you.

It is against the law for your landlord to try and evict you themselves or to harass you.You can challenge a Section 21 Notice if you think it is not valid, for example, it does not give you 2 months clear notice, your landlord has failed to protect your tenancy deposit, it is not on the correct form or you have complained to the council about repairs and your landlord has failed to deal with them.

If you think that the notice is not valid, or you need more time to find alternative accommodation, you should fill out the Defence form that the Court will send you with the claim form and information about the claim called the particulars of claim. The Court should then order the parties to attend the hearing to give their side of the story.

If the notice is not valid, the court should dismiss your landlord’s claim against you and you can continue to live at the property. If the notice is valid, the court will order that possession is given to your landlord after a short period of

time such as 14 or 28 days. In exceptional circumstances, the court can extend the time for possession up to 42 days.

After the time period has run out, if you do not leave the property, your landlord can apply to the court for a court bailiff to attend the property. The court bailiff can remove you from the property and change the locks if you are still there.

For section 8 evictions – your landlord can use this procedure any time during the tenancy if for example, you have rent arrears, you breach the terms of your tenancy in other ways or you are involved in criminal or anti- social behaviour.

Your landlord will have to prove to the court that they have grounds to evict you. These have to be legal reasons. The grounds for possession are split into two groups as follows: Mandatory grounds – if proven, the court has to order you to leave Discretionary grounds – the court can decide whether it is reasonable to evict you.

Your landlord must serve a written section 8 notice. This has to be in a special form and give the grounds for eviction that are being used. The notice period will be either 14 days, four weeks or two months depending on the circumstances.

After the notice period ends, you landlord can apply to the court for a possession order. The notice is only valid for one year after the date it was served on you.

You may be able to challenge a section 8 eviction if you think the notice is not valid, you can prove that the rent arrears figure is incorrect, you have evidence that disproves your landlord’s case, or you have a counterclaim for disrepair.

If you go to court and your challenge is successful, the court can suspend the date for possession and allow you to stay so long as you make payments to clear the arrears, or dismiss your landlord’s claim against you. If you cannot successfully challenge the eviction, you can ask the court to delay the date for possession for up to 42 days in exceptional circumstances.

After the date of possession has passed, your landlord can apply to the court bailiff to evict you.

PA Consulting RS Feva Nationals 2016 held at WPNSA – image Peter Newton Youth sailors from Hayling Island Sailing Club took a clean sweep at the PA Consulting RS Feva National Championship which took place 28th-31st May 2016 in Weymouth. HISC sailors Freddie Peters and Louis Johnson were crowned the worthy winners having shown exceptional consistency throughout the championship in every possible weather condition. Louis Wright and Jamie Allen were 2nd and brothers Henry and Rupert Jameson were 3rd. As the top three winning boats were all from HISC, the club prize also went to Hayling Island Sailing Club.

21 HISC crewed RS Feva’s took part in the event which was held at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. The youth fleet had the privilege of sharing the water and boat park with many Olympic sailors from different classes, some of whom will be representing Great Britain in the Rio Olympics later this summer. A stunning performance by the Harken and Zhik sponsored sailors Freddie Peters and crew Louis Johnson resulted in their unrivalled title win.

The event saw a range of conditions, with the first two days qualifying series raced in light and sunny conditions which saw extremely close racing throughout.

Monday and Tuesday saw much windier conditions providing champagne sailing conditions for the fleet which were split into Gold and Silver fleets. Harken

sponsored HISC sailors Freddie Peters and Louis Johnson dominated the Gold Fleet counting three 1sts and discarding an 8th when their jib broke. The final day of racing saw winds of 22 – 29 knots which proved challenging but truly exhilarating for the young sailors. In race 1 Freddie and Louis followed their form and finished 1st securing the RS Feva National Championship title.

RYA Team GBR Sailors Dylan Fletcher and Alain Sign from the 49er class presented the prizes to the aspiring young RS Feva sailors after the 4 days of close racing at Weymouth and Portland.

What’s on a Point?

When recently donating flags for the flagpole, we noticed how incredibly rusty the weathervane has become. Exposed constantly to the salt air, the iron framework is in danger of rusting beyond reasonable safety margins.

With urgent attention, and match funding support from Postcode Publications preventing its loss to our community, the weathervane will soon be shining again.

Renovation of the weathervane atop the St Faith’s church tower in the center of Havant revealed the date of its creation as 1839 - according to Wikipedia, this was the year in which the first nationally recognised Grand National was run at Aintree, the first Royal Regatta was held on the River Thames, the world's first commercial electric telegraph line came into operation alongside the Great Western Railway line from London Paddington station to West Drayton, and the Treaty of London established Belgium as a kingdom; also, George Bradshaw published the first national railway timetable, Bradshaw's Railway Time Tables and Assistant to Railway Travelling.

What great historic times they were in a world so different from today, when our weathervane looked down on all the changes made to see Havant change from a small market town to the thriving urban town it is today.

The weathervane will be re-gilded and remounted to shine brightly over Havant, as a beacon to growing prosperity and hopefully a twenty-first century caring society.

Park Community Summer School

The PO9 pioneers and a band of committed volunteers gave up a week of their summer holidays to put on Summer School. The week was aimed at local young people who are moving up to secondary school in September.

Summer school offered young

people the chance to make friends with others that they will be starting school with in September.

With a superhero theme there was plenty of fun and informal learning through stories, crafts, games and other challenges. Each day had a different theme aimed at

preparing young people for the transition to secondary school and building their confidence. Subjects were; who we are, how we treat others, facing our fears, respect, and getting organised.

Despite the department of education research in 2013 concluding that summer schools had a positive effect on 11-year-olds transition to secondary school, this year the government withdrew the funding for schools to run such schemes.

Barney and Sara Barron, having had their own son experience the benefit of the school run Summer School last year decided to act. Barney and Sara are PO9 pioneers who work among the PO9 community for the Portsmouth Anglican Diocese. Their role is part of a drive by the diocese to engage with those who find it difficult to engage with traditional models of church.

They were joined by a team of volunteers from the local community and some of the older students from Park Community. All involved worked really hard, but had a great deal of fun.

Park Community School hosted the week and the young people and volunteers had a cooked meal together every day provided by the superb catering team at Park Community School.

The week was funded by Postcode Publications (see story page 16) and Warren Park CafĂŠ Church.

Burnt

The Puppet Masters This is a nice little horror film from the 80’s which went on to have lots of sequels. It’s fair to say that if you are into these sorts of low-budget horror films then you will love this film. It might be low-budget but it’s got really good visual effects, and a good amount of gore.

The story is ok but quite confusing I think, and I didn’t really know really what was going on in the last scenes - except for the really last of course. So, for horror fans there are nice things in this and it’s generally entertaining stuff.

It’s a B-movie, sure, but that doesn’t mean that you cannot be entertained at all by this.

Obviously, the acting isn’t of a great kind, but it doesn’t necessarily need to be because that’s not what makes a horror film. No, what makes it is horror, and this film does deliver on that genre requirement. I recommend it to all horror fans and also I recommend the sequels, which aren’t exactly better than this first entry, but the second and third ones come close.

Burnt is about Adam Jones, a man who is straying onto the right path after hideous years of debauchery. We don’t see his debauchery, but we do hear plenty about it.

In the midst of trying to get his act back together, however, there are others who want him dead.

I liked this film; it’s certainly digestible (there we go). It’s a fun and entertaining

film, but it’s not a film that, like certain dishes, you don’t want to revisit again and again. It’s not the worst film, don’t get me wrong. It’s just plain, and you feel that there’s nothing really under the surface. I really enjoyed the acting, especially from Daniel Bruhl who I think was really well cast in that role. I also liked Bradley Cooper in the main role and Sienna Miller. I think they all did really well in their roles. It’s just a shame that the film is hollow, really.

However, I have to give a special mention to the menu on display. It is absolutely mouthwatering how much delectable food is in this film. It certainly leaves you wanting to eat afterwards. It is an enjoyable film, with great food, good acting and a plot which, however simple it may be, makes for an entertaining time in front of the screen.

The Dressmaker

The Dressmaker is an absolutely astonishing film. A film that one cannot just simply put into words how great it is. It is honestly one of the best films that I have seen in a cinema. It is that good. It’s also really hard to describe in what genre it is.

It’s a combination of a few genres ranging from western, to comedy (also a lot of black comedy, as well) to romance, to thriller and tragedy. It’s also a mystery, which finds the lead character, played by a magnificent and enchanting Kate Winslet, who truly lights up the screen with her splendid presence, returning to the village of her childhood in Australia. There she finds her mother (who doesn’t remember her – not even her name). She also has troubling thoughts of a murder that she believes she committed, but does not remember.

Well, that’s the main mystery, and that’s what drives the main meat of the film, but there are also other wonderful characters and subplots, which, you guessed it, are brilliant and also very interesting and intriguing.

It’s a very beautiful film, as well, with lots of great cinematography of the Australian village.You really feel that you are in that place. Also, all the film genres that this film includes really go well together, the mesh really well. My favourite genre is horror, and one scene in particular towards the end stuck with me. But even if you don’t like horror, you will have a blast with this scene because at how drenched in emotion the scene is. If you like any of the genres I mentioned, then you’ll love this. And while it does get a bit dark, it’s still very interesting and keeps you entertained. One very small peeve I had with it was that I think that it could have ended about 15 minutes before the end and I would have been happy. Not that it took away from the enjoyment of it though. It’s an astonishing work of art.

Once again, thank you ever so much for the brilliant screening at The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre.

Ninja Scroll Ninja Scroll is a truly great piece of animation. And, as it’s about a ninja trying to take out a horde of otherworldly beings, there is no shortage of graphic brutality with lashings of gore. It’s something anime fans will be familiar with.

And, I’m not a very big anime fan, I don’t watch it as much as other cartoons such as Family Guy, which I find more binge watchable. It all depends really on what story they have. But anime is still great and I do like it a lot. Especially the more mature anime. This is a great treat even to those who aren’t big on anime.

End of an Era for Yr 11’s but the Beginning of a New One...

There was a tangible buzz of antipication and excitement as Year 11 students came into school for the final time, equipped with marker pens to write farewells on shirts.

They took their seats in the Lecture Theatre in readiness for the Leavers Assembly to hear from Mr Anders, Headteacher, and Mr Cavanagh, Head of Year 11.

“This has been a fantastic group of students. They have broken records by taking the most exams ever by a Year 11 at Park. I hope that their time at Park has given them the start they need to go on and achieve their goals, and live their dreams, but Park will always be here for our leavers, and we hope they stay in touch.” Mr Anders, Headteacher.

“This group have taught me a huge amount over the last two years. Despite my nagging I have always been impressed by their ability to pick themselves up and prove their resilience in the face of knockbacks. If they continue to be so determined they will go far in life.” Mr Cavanagh, Head of Year 11.

The Class of 2016 Leavers Assembly ended with our traditional balloon release, with each balloon representing a student. Some students will go far and do great things, some will be happy to choose to stay closer to home, but ultimately, everyone will go far in life!

Year 6’s Embark on a Week of Transition at Park As the new students got to know Park staff, and boys and girls from other schools. A time to discover how Park works, they felt more confident about the move from junior to secondary school. They took part in some exciting activities, enjoyed a tour of the school, and got to know each other in team building activities within their mentoring groups.

They took part in a dry rowing challenge provided by the Oarsome Chance Foundation and co-ordinated by Mr Pritchard, our Facilities Manager. The fastest rowers were selected to take part in an on the water rowing experience at Langstone harbour. During the week they were also able to make their own wooden boat models.

Parents were invited in to meet staff, watch a film of the activities their children had been enjoying, and to share a barbecue whilst meeting other parents, the meat served was all from our Park farm.

In the final assembly, on Friday, each student was given a cucumber or a tomato plant and challenged to grow it and use the produce in a recipe over the summer holiday. The winning recipe will be prepared in the school kitchen next term.

It was a busy and enjoyable week. The students left on Friday worn out but smiling and ready for the new term starting on September 5th.

Year 11 Celebrated Their Time at Park With a Glamorous Prom This year we hosted the event at Boathouse No. 7 in The Historic Dockyard, Portsmouth.

Students arrived in an array of spectacular transport, classic cars, limousines, horse and carriage, and Batman even made an appearance in his Batmobile.

As ever the students looked stunning, wearing amazing dresses and smart suits. The night was a huge success with all involved, commending the year group on what an amazing group of young adults they were.

We wish them the best of luck with their results and future!

Jonathan Rogers from VIN Wine Merchants in Emsworth looks at these underrated wines.

When we talk about the wines of Portugal, we immediately think of their classic fortified wines, Madeira and Port.

Prior to the early 1990’s, this was all that Portugal had to offer in terms of quality.

Their still reds lacked any real fruit and their whites were dull and devoid of any character. But then during the mid-90’s a wine renaissance took place and the wine makers began to realise just what their own local varieties had to offer.

The vintages of 1994 and 1995 gave them the chance to turn the tide.

Experiencing huge crop levels in both these years the wine world suddenly found themselves drinking beautifully elegant soft reds and clean crisp whites from the Portuguese producers and better still, they started at entry level price points emphasising the point that quality and ‘cheap’ can be achieved. Today, these wines are still some of the best quality and value for money wines around.

The most notable regions for production are Setubal DOC producing sweet wines from the Moscatel grape, Bairrada DOC which produces Portugal most important reds, Lisboa DOC which is the largest wine producing region in Portugal and Vinho Verde DOC up in the north. This dry light wine was extremely popular thirty odd years ago in this country and is now making a comeback. The majority of the region is made up of small holders who traditionally trained the vines to grow up trees, along fences and even up telegraph poles. This enabled them to keep the land space for other traditional crops. Today the majority of vines in this region grow in the normal way although some still keep to the old methods.

Mostly made from the Alvarinho grape is light, dry and crisp with a slight fizz to it. And

Filling 250g cherry tomatoes 600g red onions 200g baby spinach 150g emmental 8 eggs 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 1 ½ tsp brown sugar

Pulse butter and flour until it resembles bread crumbs

Blind bake tart

Method For pastry 1. Attach dough hook to food mixer. Place plain flour and whole wheat and grain flour into mixing bowl with a pinch of salt. Cut cold butter into cubes and add to flour mixture. Pule mixture until it resembles bread crumbs.

2. Add 7 Tablespoon (tbsp.) of cold water to the bread crumb mixture. Pulse until the mixture forms a ball. Add additional water 1 tbsp at a time to obtain a soft but not too sticky consistency if required.

3. Flatten dough ball into a disk 2cm thickness and cover with cling film and chill in the fridge for 20 minutes.

4. Roll out pastry disk until it fits a 28 cm loose bottom tart tin and prick with fork.

Bake in the oven on 180 fan for 10 minutes with grease proof paper and baking beans and then a further 5 minutes without the beans and paper.

For filling 1. Slice onions and place in a ceramic dish.

Add 1 tbsp of olive oil and mix well.

Cook in the microwave for 10 minutes.

Remove from microwave and stir in 1.5 teaspoon brown sugar and 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar. Microwave for 10 minutes.

2. Wash and cut cherry tomatoes in half.

3. Wash spinach and microwave for 5 minutes stirring half way through.

Squeeze out excess water and roughly chop.

4. Grate emmental .

5. Assemble tart. Placing cooked o+nions on the bottom and then spinach.

6. Crack eggs into a jug and season well with salt and pepper. Stir in emmental cheese.

7. Pour egg mixture on top of onions and spinach. Decorate the top of tart with cut tomatoes with cut side facing upwards.

8. Bake on 160 fan for 30 to 40 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.

Serve hot with a side salad.

By Reg Moule EARLY SEPTEMBER • This is a good time to move established evergreen shrubs, and the traditional time to start planting new trees and shrubs of all kinds.

• Make-up winter hanging baskets using pansies, bright evergreens and winter flowering heathers.

• Prepared hyacinths should be planted and put in a cool, dark place by the end of this month if you want them in bloom by Christmas.

MID SEPTEMBER • Sow some hardy annuals outdoors in flowering positions in sheltered spots.

• Scarify the lawn to remove “thatch” and feed with Autumn lawn dressing.

• This is a good time to sow or turf a new lawn and repair bare patches.

• Grease band the trunks of fruit trees to trap the wingless female Winter moths as they climb them to lay eggs.

• Strawberries should be planted by the end of this month for cropping next year.

• Plant garlic now in a sunny free draining spot. They like a long growing season in order to make the best cloves.

• If your lawn is infested with leatherjackets or chafer grubs control them using natural biological pest control agents.

Plant Japanese onion sets to get a lovely crop of flavoursome onions ready from June.

WHEN YOU WANT TO GET YOUR GREEN TOMATOESS TURNED ON – JUST UNZIP A BANANA! Most gardeners have a go at growing tomatoes and as the season comes to an end there are always lots of green fruit left on the plants. So what do you do with them, after all there is only so much green tomato chutney that you can possibly consume over the next twelve months?

Well you certainly don’t put them in a sunny windowsill as that dries them out rather than ripening them. It is much better to put the green fruit in brown paper bags and place them in a drawer to gradually ripen up, but this can take time.

In order to accelerate the ripening process, place about 4 fruits in a paper, or polythene, bag and get a nice ripe banana. You can eat the banana – it’s the skin that you want.

All you do is pop the skin in the bag with the tomatoes and leave them alone for a few days.

The ethylene gas produced by the banana skin will soon turn the tomatoes on – making them ripen up and become an appetising red colour.

LATER SEPTEMBER • Lift beetroot, carrots, turnips and potatoes for winter use.

Leave parsnips and swedes in the ground to develop more flavour.Sow some compact hardy annuals in a cold greenhouse to grow into winter flowering pot plants.

• Pick green tomatoes for chutney or ripening in a brown paper bag in a drawer indoors.

Fifteen willing volunteers from Pfizer, a pharmaceutical multi-national based in New Lane, Havant, descended on Butser Ancient Farm to volunteer for a day. The enthusiastic team were tasked with lime washing the walls of two of the buildings on the site.

Butser Ancient Farm is a unique archaeological experimental site with ongoing constructions of ancient buildings based on real sites. The Farm is a not for profit organisation and relies heavily on the support and commitment of volunteers.

Maureen Page, Director at Butser Ancient Farm says "we would like to thank Pfizer's volunteers who have offered invaluable help to our site and without their help we wouldn't be able to undertake such projects. The volunteers have been lime washing the walls of an Iron Age Roundhouse and also a Saxon House. We have evidence from the archaeology that walls would have been treated in this way to help to maintain them and also helps to keep the houses light inside. We understand Pfizer are keen to support educational projects and Butser Ancient Farm fits nicely

Eager shoppers flock to see the new store open.

Hundreds of people turned up to be the first to sample the new store providing food and clothing in true M&S fashon.

CRAFT BEERS – Enjoy your local ales

German Beers We may have voted to leave the European Union but there is still plenty of time to sample European beers. Germany has been a leading beer producing country for many centuries. In 1516 the Reinheitsgebot or Germany Beer purity law was passed which proclaimed that beer could only be made from water, barley and hops.Yeast had not yet been discovered and beers in the old days fermented through the actions of wild air-born yeasts. Many German beers are still brewed to this specification whereas much industrially produced beer contains adjuncts such as rice, maize and sugar.

Germany is best known for its lagers and for many years British brewers sold their lagers under German sounding names.

Does anyone remember the awful Hofmeister lager with its “follow the bear” commercials and the rather tacky “Bierkellers” that opened in many towns?

Lager is still very popular in Germany but there are also a number of very distinct regional styles of beer. I am always looking for new types of beer and feel that Germany offers some interesting beers.

Here are a few that I have sampled recently.

Diebels Alt Bier 4.9% abv Alt beers originate in the northern German city of Düsseldorf. Alt; which means old, are beers that are top fermented, like our traditional English ales. Indeed Alt beers can be seen as a version of English bitter. Alt pours a dark copper colour and has a distinct hoppy aroma. It has a very pleasant balanced taste with caramel undertones and a distinct bitter finish. Diebels Brewery is located in the town of Issum, which is near the Dutch border and a few miles North West of Dusseldorf.

Reissdorf Kölsch 4.8% bv Kölsch is another German regional style, this time originating from Cologne (Köln in German). This is a type of lager/ale hybrid, in that it is top fermented, like a British ale, but cold conditioned like a lager. This could be seen as a German version of a Golden

persisted. The beer pours a cloudy reddish brown and has a very smoky aroma. The taste is full on with smoke, malt and bitterness all coming through. This is a strongly flavoured beer that would go well with BBQ meat or ribs. The Historic Smoked Beer Brewery “Schlenterla” is located in the centre of Bamberg and brews no less than seven different styles of smoked beers. This Lent beer is traditionally only sold between Ash Wednesday and Easter.

taste. This is a very fine lager by which all other lagers should be judged. It is brewed in Munich by Hofbrau who also offer a wide range of German beer styles.

Flensburger Dunkel 4.8% bv Dunkel means “dark” and this is a Munich style dark lager. It may seem strange but lager is a style of beer created by bottom fermentation and cold storage. Although dark lagers are quite rare they are made by quite a few breweries in Germany and other countries. The beer pours a copper brown and has a caramel aroma. The taste is quite sweet, almost fruity, perhaps a hint of cherry coming through. Flensburger is brewed in the town of Flensburg which is in the very far north of German, near the Danish border.

Ale which of course is a relatively new style of beer in Britain. The beer pours a lovely golden colour and has a floral aroma and a good citrus taste. A very refreshing summer beer for those who want to drink something more flavoursome than lager.

Hofbrau Original Munich Beer 5.1% bv This is a Helles (pale) lager which is the most popular style in Bavaria in Southern Germany. Hofbrau is a golden lager with a grassy aroma and a smooth, almost buttery

Handgebraute Badische Gose 4.6% bv This is an unusual style of beer which had almost been forgotten. Gose originated in Goslar which was in East Germany. It is a wheat beer brewed with the addition of a very small amount of sea salt and coriander.

The beer pours a cloudy orange colour with a tangerine aroma. The taste is very sweet with pineapple and citrus flavours coming through. A very refreshing drink with a mouthfeel more like a cider. It is brewed in Plankstadt which is near Heidelberg in the south of Germany. A number of US breweries have also recreated this unusual style of beer.

Aecht Schlenterla Rauchbier Fastenbeir (Lent Beer) 5.5% bv This is something for the person who likes a really different drink. This beer is an unfiltered, smoked lager and is about as far removed from the tasteless industrial lagers as you can get. In the old days all beers had a smoky taste as the malt was toasted over an open fire.

The society stages annually three quality shows: the Spring Show at the end of March with Daffodils and Narcissi, the Early Summer Show at the end of June with Roses and Sweet Peas and the Main Summer Show at the beginning of September with Dahlias. All shows have vegetable, plant and flower classes and much more!

Membership of the Horti is £4 per household per year and that can be saved in one trip to our Trading Centre. Lectures are held on the 4th Wednesday of each month at the URC Hall. Four Newsletters are distributed to members every year, giving reports and helpful articles. Three summer day trips are available for members plus a holiday each September. The four winners of the competition were Ben Osborne, Anna Farndell, Wez Basiyalo and Amy Preddy who received their prizes from Chris. As this was the last session of the school year Chris then presented the coaches ‘Players of the Year’ awards to Andrei Toader, Ben Osborne, Ellie Harland and Amy Preddy. Whilst enjoying celebratory, end of year doughnuts there was an opportunity for people to take photos and to chat informally with Chris. Following his visit Chris emailed to say "Thanks for having me! It was an excellent way to finish off the season and certainly left the juniors wanting more. Sessions resume on Saturday 10th September 1000 - 1200 in the sports hall at Horndean Technology College.

Saturday 9th July saw the return of Chris Gregory, GB beach volleyball player, to Horndean Technology College to coach the junior volleyball players at South Hants Satellite Volleyball Club. Members of the Afternoon Social Club at Denmead Community Centre were surprised and delighted to find delicious cake from Costa Coffee in Waterlooville to accompany their cups of tea or coffee at the last two monthly meetings as an alternative to the usual biscuits!

This happy surprise, which will be a regular feature of Afternoon Social Club, is thanks to Costa Coffee’s Waterlooville Precinct manager, Donna Pulford, and her participation in Costa’s support for community projects.

Donna is pictured on a visit to the June meeting of the Afternoon Social Club, together with Denmead Parish Councillor Patricia Stallard who told the centre about the Costa initiative. Also pictured enjoying Costa’s Layered Carrot Cake are Ms Joyce Scott (seated next to Councillor Stallard), Mrs Joan Banting and Mrs Gwen Squire.

Afternoon Social Club was started for Denmead’s elderly residents by Denmead Community Centre trustee, Dr Liz Hauge, in March 2015 and it has been a great success with its twenty plus ladies and gentlemen members.

Most of the meetings are taken up with socialising over a cup of tea or coffee and cake or biscuits, while the last half hour of each meeting is given over to playing two or three games of Bingo: this always adds a little zest to the proceeding and a cheer always goes up when the ‘Bingo maestro’, Mr Phil Brown, arrives!

Phil’s wife, Sue, Mrs Cathy Hopley and Mr Stephen Cranmer make up the rest of the team of volunteers who help to run the club.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation charity “One Walk Hayling Island” On Sunday 25th September, an estimated 500 fundraisers will be stepping out along the beautiful Hayling Island seafront to raise money towards finding a cure for Type 1 diabetes which is an autoimmune disease that damages the pancreas stopping it producing insulin. It is currently unpreventable, incurable and can strike virtually anyone at any time. Type 1 diabetes is very serious and life threatening and sadly surrounded by myths and stigma. Type 1 diabetes is NOT related to diet or lifestyle.

JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) is the world’s leading charitable funder of Type 1 diabetes research and is the chosen charity of the walk’s organisers, Averil and Ian Pollicott. Their grandson, Morgan, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 2 years old, when he suddenly became critically ill with DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis). Now at seven years old, Morgan has had over 3000 injections, 480 cannulas to attach his insulin pump, and over 15 thousand fingerpricks.

JDRF is the leading international charity funding research into Type 1 diabetes. They fund research into finding a cure, investigating new treatments and identifying ways to prevent Type 1 diabetes. Because of the support and generosity of our sponsors and participants in last years walk, we raised over £5000 for JDRF. The 'One Walk Hayling Island' will go from the Plaza at Eastoke Corner along to Beachlands and back. Remembering the raid on Entebbe – 40 years on The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre is delighted to welcome Professor Saul David to speak about his latest book, Operation Thunderbolt.

It’s now 40 years since the daring rescue of the hostages trapped on Air France flight 139, which was forced to land at Entebbe in Uganda – then under the dictatorship of Idi Amin. The Israeli military mounted a complex but ultimately successful operation to free the hostages, who numbered more than 100.

HAMPSHIRE AND ISLE OF WIGHT AIR AMBULANCE SEEKS STALL HOLDERS FOR FAMILY FUN DAY AT SANDOWN AIRPORT

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance will be hosting a family fun day at Sandown Airport on the Isle of Wight on Saturday 17th September and is looking for a variety of stall holders to join the charity on the day. A first for HIOWAA, the Fun Day promises to be a day to remember for all the family. As well as face painting, kids’ activities, a vintage fun fair, BBQ and more, there will also be an opportunity to meet representatives from other emergency services and appearances from the HIOWAA mascots; Teddy Medic, Pilot Paws and Herocopter.

Our Fun Day is an opportunity, not only to raise vital funds to keep the Air Ambulance flying and saving lives, but also to spread the word about our life saving work. We have been really pleased with the response that we have had from the local community and we are hoping that the Fun Day will become an annual event in our fundraising calendar’.

Over The Wall George Turner (aka Topsy), the owner of Innovations Fitness - a personal training and boot camp company based on the West Sussex/Hampshire border - led 12 brave souls in a “Peek A Boo” Challenge in support of Havant children’s charity Over The Wall. Over The Wall is the UK branch of the late Academy Award winning actor Paul Newman’s SeriousFun Camps that provide therapeutic, fun and FREE camps for children with serious health challenges - as well as camps for siblings and family groups - Sir Kenneth Branagh is their Patron.

I hope you found our last self-help exercises for wrist pain useful. Today we will be offering some advice and exercises for tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis).

There have been a lot of people who suffer with tennis elbow (pain on outside of the elbow) attending our clinic recently; tennis players, weight lifters, office workers, builders, gardeners, people taking up new and repetitive activities such as decorating or playing the violin.

Most people with this problem have some pain when lifting pans, opening jars, bending their arm, gripping small objects such as pens, shaking someone's hand firmly or holding a cup.

Tennis elbow is an overuse injury which occurs where the tendon which extends the wrist attaches to the outside of the elbow. I am going to give you exercises which will help with tennis elbow.

The best treatment for tennis elbow is frictions, massage, mobilisations combined with exercises. Acupuncture is another effective treatment for tennis elbow too, we offer this at our Havant clinic.

Elbow Flexion/Extension • Extend your arm with your palm facing up then bend and straighten at your elbow.

• Repeat 10 times, 3 times a day.

Wrist Extensor Strengthening • Support your forearm on a table with palm facing down • Hold a weight in the hand of your injured side.

• Use your other hand to bend your wrist up.

• Then let go of your wrist and use just your injured side to lower the weight slowly back to the starting position.

• Repeat 3 sets of 15, 2 times a day

THE CAT & RABBIT RESCUE CENTRE Milka Say hello to our beautiful Milka. She is just over a year old and was brought to the Centre at just two days old after her mum was found dumped in the woods with a litter of baby bunnies. Milka is a really sweet girl and loves cuddles but can be a little nervous at times.

She has had a tough time here at the Centre so far. She was originally available as part of a pair with her mum but unfortunately, due to her mum being in ill health, she had to be separated from her. Now she is very lonely and so is looking for a new male partner that she can be bonded with. Ideally, Milka would suit a family with older children due to her shy nature. If you think you can provide Milka with the forever home that she so desperately deserves then please do not hesitate to contact the Centre.

On a beautiful sunny Saturday 18th June’16 Spinnaker Chorus, Portsmouth took part in the Bournemouth Music Competitions Festival at the Pavilion Theatre. We have been preparing for this competition since early May, after coming third place at the annual Sweet Adeline's International, Region 31, ladies barbershop convention in Newcastle.

At last year's festival we entered in two classes, ‘Songs from the shows’ and ‘Barbershop choir’ and came first and second place respectively. This year, under the direction of our new MD John Palmer, we were more adventurous, entering four classes. Jenny Savory was guest director for two of our songs also.

Our first class was ‘Show Choir with Movement’ in which we performed two very lively numbers ‘The moment I saw your eyes’ and ‘It’s Raining Men’. We won this class and received The Seer Cup. After lunch came the ‘Choral Sacred Song’, not a genre of music which you

would typically associate with a barbershop choir however, we entered with ‘You Raise me Up’ followed by ‘I will follow him’.

There were a number of fabulous choirs in this class who sang some hauntingly beautiful pieces and the well deserved winners were The New Forest Chamber Choir.

Op VOLUNTEERING at Leigh Park Community Centre

17 volunteers from 9 (Plassey) Battery, 12th Regiment Royal Artillery took some time out from their state of High Readiness to help out at a local community centre.

The Battery based at Thorney Island wanted to do something to engage with the local community and contacted Community First to find out where the help was most needed. Troop Commander Lt Sarah Keracher, says “Having some down time during our High Readiness commitment, whereby we are deployable any where around the world at 30 days notice, we wanted to offer our skills and manpower to benefit a local community project”.

Gnr Nathan Style says “it has been great to get out of camp for a couple of days and help out our local community. We have been really busy painting the reception area and two meeting rooms and we even managed to get some on the walls! I would particularly like to thank the Right To Work Volunteers at Hewitt’s who made us five

amazing cakes”.

Over the two days the team painted three main areas of Leigh Park Community Centre which were in need of freshening up. Recently Community First took over the management of the Centre and were really pleased the local Army personnel were able to volunteer some of their time. Janet Duggan, Business & Community Project Lead at Community First comments “We would like to thank the team from 12th Regiment Royal Artillery for all their hard work over the two days. We would also like express our appreciation to Brewers Farlington for donating all the paint and materials used to decorate the rooms. This has enabled the Community Centre to carry out much needed and long awaited improvements to the building. It has been an amazing two days and demonstrates true community spirit when everyone comes together”.

Next came the ‘Female Voice Choir’ class, a new category introduced this year.

With a quick costume change we donned our ‘black and bling’ to perform ‘Come in from the rain’ and ‘Defying Gravity’ one of our favourites from the show ‘Wicked’.

With ten choirs competing we were overjoyed when we were announced as the first time winners of this new award.

On to the ‘Barbershop Chorus’ class, nine choirs competing for the Roger Mills Trophy.

After all entrants had performed their sets, once again to our delight, Spinnaker was announced as first place winner. Waves quartet, made up of four members of Spinnaker Chorus, came joint fourth place

at their debut here last year. Competing again in this group which comprised an impressive thirteen quartets and one octet, Waves, who are Tracy Daniel, Liz Waddon, Kate Middleton and Hazel Smith, sang ‘If I were the only girl’ and the fun, upbeat ‘Feeling Groovy’. After a nervous wait whilst all competitors critique was read out the girls were thrilled to find out they had improved on their debut result, this time being awarded joint third place!

To finish a perfect day in sunny Bournemouth Spinnaker Chorus sang in the final class, ‘Bournemouth Choir of the Year’.

The winners of the previous classes throughout the day were invited to compete for a chance to receive the ‘Margaret Miller Trophy’ and £50 prize money. We didn't win this one but we were delighted that the trophy went to the superb ‘Impromptu’ from Surrey.

Spinnaker Chorus is a fun group of talented ladies with a passion for barbershop singing.

999 Day returned to Beachlands on the Havant B.C. events field adjacent to Funlands and the Hayling Light Railway on Sunday 26th June between 1000hrs till 1700hrs.

Fire and rescue personnel from Hayling Island and Hampshire Fire & Rescue units were joined by Pompiers (firemen) from Hayling’s twin town of Gorron in France as they tackled a caravan fire with potential LPG explosion and rescued one man from the blaze in the first of the action scenarios.

Numerous static stands from the Ambulance, Police, Fire the RNLI, HM Coastguard with its Rescue Team, helicopter, Hampshire SAR team, Hampshire SAR Dogs and Blood Bikers and support Emergency Services including The Red Cross, St Johns Ambulance along with the Hayling Lions Club and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance demonstrated their skills.

The R. C. Model Geeks model aero club flew their planes until one caught fire trailing smoke and then crashed, which required an aircraft crash truck, fire tender and large ground monitor to pump thousands of litres of foam and water onto the resulting blaze of a nearby building.

In the afternoon while a Spitfire from the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight flew overhead, a field gun fired by Ubique Right of the Line from the Royal Armouries repeatedly roared on the ground below as air raid siren wailed and explosions marked bombs falling in a WWII action display. 33 military Field Hospital, Gosport responded with their battlefield ambulance, simulating the attack on Hayling and the Sinah gun site in 1941 which casued numerous casualties.

With Hayling at the forefront of support for the invasion of Normandy in 1944 the

Deputy Mayor Christine Fournier of Hayling’s twin town of Gorron in Northern France watched from the balcony of the Royal with ‘Winston Churchill’, played by Laurie Noble of HIADS, where the real former prime minister once watched the final rehearsal fro D-Day that led to the liberation of Gorron on the 3rd and 4th August by Patton’s Third Army.

The whole event, which was free for the public to attend, provided a unique insight into the emergency services to see them in action, while showing support for the attending charities that finance the essential work, much of which is funded by voluntary donations.

The ceremony of Sunset and the lowering of naval flags by the Havant Police Cadets was led by the Blendworth Brass Band and their conductor Simon Nicholls, in the presence of Deputy Mayor Christine Fournier of Hayling’s twin town of Gorron in Northern France.

The fishing boat ‘Torbay Belle’ with skipper Peter developed a fire in the engine room just off the beach to which 3 lifeboats from Hayling and Portsmouth sped to the scene supported by the SAR helicopter from Lee on Solent. Almost as soon as the SAR flight dropped the winchman to the deck of the lifeboat, the aircraft received a real time distress call to go to the aid of someone who had fallen from the cliffs on the Isle of Wight.

A diverse selection of projects across Hampshire have made the shortlist for the 10th annual Countryside Awards.

The awards celebrate a beautiful and living countryside that everyone can value and enjoy and are organised by charity CPRE Hampshire, the Campaign to Protect Rural England in association with The Southern Co-operative.

Amounst the Hampshire finalists 2016 by local area and award under the Sustainable Buildings category are: Butser Education CIC, working with the South Downs Coppice and Craft Centre, have created the Chalton Saxon House at Butser Ancient Farm, Chalton, Waterlooville. The building is composed entirely of natural, renewable materials and

showcases traditional rural skills.

Re-development of Park Community School, Havant – a partnership project involving Children’s Services and Property Services at Hampshire County Council to create a learning and community facility in the heart of the local community of Leigh Park, Havant.

The individual Award category sponsors for Sustainable Buildings are Radian.

Awards judges are visiting all projects this summer before making their decision on the overall winners. All the finalists will be invited to the Countryside Awards Ceremony on 15th September 2016 near Winchester, where the winners will be announced by the Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire.

Hayling Lions Club In July, Lion Cathy Shoebridge was welcomed as the new President for the Hayling Lions Club. Cathy joined the Lions three years ago and is delighted to be the new President. In her acceptance speech, she highlighted the fact that over thirty events had been organised in the past twelve months to promote the club and raise an excellent amount of money to support many individuals and initiatives on Hayling Island. In the forthcoming year, Cathy hopes to introduce some new fund raising events as well as a health screening event.

Community Groups benefit from expert Internet Marketer!

A range of community groups from across the region came together to benefit from the expert knowledge of a local business woman who shared her skills around how to be more productive on the internet. We live in an age where technology has become so important there is a danger of being left behind.

The session was organised by Community First as part of the Employee Volunteering Skill Share Scheme. Janet Duggan, Business and Community Project Lead from Community First says, “the skill share scheme works with businesses to effectively upskill and pass on their expertise to the community & voluntary sector. We approached Yvette Mindel, from Internet Marketing Naturally, to deliver a workshop around how to make groups’ websites more user friendly and productive so they can promote their organisations online.Yvette volunteered her time and hopefully has given the participants the tools to improve their online presence and in turn get more people visiting their websites”.

Topsy Turner Leads Fundraiser in Aid of Children's Charity Over The Wall On August 25th, George Turner (aka Topsy) , the owner of Innovations Fitness—a personal training and boot camp company based on the West Sussex/Hampshire border--will lead 12 brave souls in a “Peek A Boo” Challenge in support of Havant children’s charity Over The Wall. Over The Wall is the UK branch of the late Academy Award winning actor Paul Newman’s SeriousFun Camps and provides therapeutic, fun and FREE camps for children with serious health challenges - as well as camps for siblings and family groups. Sir Kenneth Branagh is their Patron. Turning Yellow, Raising Awareness about Cystic Fibrosis Although cystic fibrosis is rare, about one in twenty five of us unknowingly carries the faulty gene which causes cystic fibrosis, a condition which affects the lungs and the digestion. It was once invariably fatal in early childhood, but with better treatments, and new medications , people can now grow up, and, to the outside world, look well, lead near normal lives, studying, working, playing sport, and raising families .

It is only those close to them who know the sheer hard work of daily treatment throughout their lives. For example, patients must have physiotherapy at least 2 or 3 times a day. One local man, aged 46, has therefore had at least 33,580 sessions, lasting a half hour each, plus several other types of treatment.

Researchers, including those at the

University of Portsmouth, are still discovering more about this very complex condition, nowadays diagnosed by a heel prick test soon after birth. There is real hope that a form of cure will be found. But help is still needed to do this.

Some of the local branch members recently wore yellow, for the CF Trust’s 3rd Wear Yellow Day, on 1st July. The Emirates Spinnaker Tower was lit yellow for the second year running, to mark the occasion.

The branch , which has been active for over 50 years, is hoping that next year, 2017, others will join in the fun, and help the 10000 + people in the UK, and 200-300 people in Hampshire, to fight for a better future. Emily Warne and AmyLauren Johnson from the recently-opened Chichester salon and Sam Pullen from Havant all made the UK finals of the Goldwell Color Zoom competition, one of the biggest live hairstyling competitions in the world.

Sam went on to take the Silver prize in the Creative Colourist category, with her interpretation of the rebellious ‘Disrupt’ image brief.

‘Bold, rainbow shades have been a massive hit in hair colouring’ says Emily Warne, co-founder of the salon group. ‘But it doesn’t have to be as obvious as an all-over bubblegum pink or parma violet. Realistically, most jobs require a more conservative colour choice than mint green or lemon yellow – which is where the ‘peekaboo’ trend comes in.

Our images showed just how beautifully you can enhance a brunette shade with strategically placed neon-brights. The colour is applied in such a way that the hair can be styled to show it off, or hide it completely. It’s the low-key way to do highfashion and is proving really popular with clients.’

With Autumn around the corner, a new colour palette is creeping in – so if unicorn shades aren’t for you, then look to universal shades of bright copper (or cuivre, as it’s known in the glossies), creamy Icelandic blonde or deep conker brown.

The Power of Brows

There’s no mistaking that eyebrows have become a huge part of our grooming regime and the options to help you achieve the perfect shape seem endless. Patchy

from over plucking? More Susan Boyle than Brook Shields? Whatever your brow dilemma, take comfort in the fact there’s more than likely a solution to your problem.

A popular look in the 90’s was the thin, round brow. Many who adopted this trend found they struggled to grow the brow hair back and achieve a softer, fuller look.

Clients coming to us with this issue can enter our ‘Brow rehab’ and can choose from a simple reshape and tidy up every 2-4 weeks depending on speed of hair growth. Make up can be applied to demonstrate the desired end result.

Some clients who have previously over plucked can take up to as little as 2-3 visits to see a difference.

For people with fair or sparse brows, a simple way to enhance the shape is to have them tinted. This process is similar to having your hair coloured and a skin test is required prior to treatment. A subtle tint is applied and lasts for around two weeks then naturally fades out.

Nowadays fuller, more natural brows are sought after and if you can’t grow your brow hair you can have them created for you by a permanent make up technician/artist.

This is done using pigments and either a machine - commonly known as semipermanent make up – or with a hand tool, known as microblading. Both methods involve implanting pigment (ink) under the skin to mimic hair strokes and create flattering, natural looking eyebrows. These methods are often used on ladies or gents who have lost hair due to alopecia, chemotherapy or scarring.

A new brow trend currently popular with the girls about town is the ‘ombré brow’. This can be done using one of the more permanent techniques mentioned above or using carefully applied makeup. The brow should start off looking soft at the bulb, blend into a darker shade and soften slightly at the tail.
