Waterlooville Music Festival The Waterlooville Music Festival is the largest annual event in Waterlooville now in its eleventh year. Together with Waterlooville Business Association’s “Market Place Music” on the first day of the Festival, you are invited to over 50 concerts, featuring soloists, choirs, instrumental groups and orchestras. Tuesday is Folk and Ale Night with the return of Revel Weird and Wild and Portsmouth Shantymen, a fantastic double bill combination that was a sell out success last year.

On Wednesday the festival is delighted that, after a gap of six years, it has managed to book The Hampshire Police Male Voice Choir, founded 1941 and celebrating its 75th anniversary, who are joined by Quintessential Brass, and on Thursday perhaps an even more exciting and special booking, a performance from a professional male harmony group with a huge following who are normally to be found starring on major cruise ships and holiday centres - The Octaves are flying in from Genoa to be at the festival, and thereafter are off performing on P&O Cruises Ventura and Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth - see video clips

on them on the festival website. Friday is 50’s to 80’s Party Night and another festival first with one of the UK’s leading Everly Brothers Tribute acts The Foreverly Brothers.

And of course the festival concludes as ever with Last Night of the Proms which was more or less sold out two weeks after the box office opened in February. Tickets for all the evening concerts are set at very reasonable prices and, with exception of Saturdays, include an interval drink from the bar.

But remember that the festival is on all day, and there are many daytime events of a professional standard to enjoy, all of which are free of charge. An Organ Recital on Monday, Baroque Ad Hoc on Tuesday, Jazz with Robbie Rich on Wednesday, a Harp Recital Thursday, Palm Court tea dance with Cornish Cream Teas served on Friday, and the talent of local rock bands with Bands on the Lawn on Saturday.

Waterlooville Music Festival is a community event organised and run entirely by volunteers, do take full advantage of this week long musical extravaganza!

Catherington W.I.Visit the House of Lards

For over 60 years Catherington W.I. has operated from Catherington village hall, sadly we ran out of space and so we have moved to larger premises enabling us to welcome the eleven ladies who have been waiting to join us and also welcome any new ladies who would like to visit us with a view to joining, we moved into Catherington All Saints Church Hall in January.

Our WI has enjoyed a very busy year including a coach trip to London, an outing to Lacock Village, a strawberry and fizz celebration, a birthday lunch, regular cinema trips and also a W.I. carol service held just a few weeks ago where Catherington Primary School children entertained us with their songs and the members husbands served us with mince pies and countless cups of tea.

We have also heard some outstanding speakers over the past year one of them being Earl Attlee who kindly arranged for twelve lucky members to have a conducted tour of the House of Lords including afternoon tea, hosted by Lord and Lady Attlee – what a day to remember.

We hope to start a walking group in the spring / summer months and also some of

our members have expressed an interest in improving their computer skills, this could be from having no skills at all to extending the knowledge they have already.

THE CAT & RABBIT RESCUE CENTRE It’s me, Hulky Bear again, the new Out and Abouter reporter for the Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre in Sidlesham.

It’s been another busy month here at the Centre. The barn here at the Centre houses rescued cats, rabbits and guinea pigs and is desperately in need of updating. One of my friends, Mouse, has found her forever home! She had been here at the Centre for nine whole months and she was starting to think that she would never get the chance at a new home. Luckily for her, the most wonderful lady came to see her and instantly fell in

love with her and now she has gone to live in a nice, warm new house! There are always cats here at the Centre that are quite nervous and they desperately need somebody to take a chance on them and give them the loving homes that they so deserve. Community Groups benefit from Business Expert!

Charities and community groups from across our areas attended a lively presentation evening this week delivered by Ben Kench from The Business Booster.

Discussion focussed around how community groups could become more business like and attract potential new funders.

The evening was organised by Community First, a charity that works with the community and voluntary sector across East Hampshire, Havant and Winchester.

Janet Duggan, Business & Community Project Lead from Community First says “we were very excited to be hosting this exciting new presentation evening for community groups as part of our Employee Volunteering Skill Share Scheme. The presentation given by Ben has given me the courage to rethink our marketing strategy and look at new ways of engaging with businesses”.

Can my ex stop me?

Looking after children after a separation or divorce can be difficult. It can be additionally challenging if one parents wants to leave the area. So what happens in these circumstances?

When a family all live together, changes in job or moving home are all decisions that are made together. However, once a family is separated, one parent’s decision has a significant impact on the other parent. It can feel particularly unfair when one parent feels that their former partner still essentially has a say in how they live their life.

If we take an example, let’s look at a separated family. The children live with their mother but spend time with their father each Wednesday after school and on alternate weekends. Let’s say the mother wants to move with their children from Portsmouth to Cumbria. This is the other end of the country. 300 miles and about 56 hours’ drive. It would be impractical for the father to take the children out after school on a Wednesday and alternate weekends may also be a challenge, both physically and financially.

So what happens? Should the mother have to stay in the same place they lived when they were all living together? Or should the father see his children less than

he currently does?

The answer is not cut and dry. There is a balancing exercise to be undertaken. It is a tough decision for a Judge to make within court proceedings and many factors are considered.

Factors that will be looked at include why does the mother want to move?

What are the plans when they get there?

What proposals are there for the continued relationship between the children and the father?

A recent case has been through the courts and the outcome was clear. The Judge stated: ‘’The interests of the parents are not ignored but, if it is not possible to accommodate everyone's wishes, the best interests of the child dictate the outcome” As you will see, it’s not absolutely black and white, and each case will turn on its facts.

If you are facing a situation where you want to move, or your ex is thinking about moving, take some legal advice early on. Making an amicable arrangement is always going to be best and the more time you have to discuss this, the better for the children, who are the ones that matter the most.

Walking Football Tournament Cycling Spring is here at last, and those of us who have been out on our bikes all Winter will be starting to shed a few layers for comfort. For those who are just looking at the sunshine and thinking about it, here are a few tips on suitable clothing.

Like any other activity, cycling can have specialised clothing and equipment, but for ordinary purposes just ordinary clothes are fine.

So, if worrying about clothing is holding you back, here are some tips Ordinary shirts and T-shirts are fine for many conditions, and bright clothing helps other road users to see you. But, if you cycle hard or for any distance, you may find they get hot and uncomfortable.

Quite unnecessary if you cycle for short distances. The further you go, however, the more you'll benefit from a particular cut that is not bulky at the front where you bend, and is longer at the back so that you don't get a gap to let draughts in.

A Walking Football Tournament held at Park Community School raised nearly £400 to be divided equally between Sport Relief and Against Breast Cancer.

Organised by Emsworth & Hayling Island Walking Football Club eight teams from: Emsworth, Havant & Waterlooville (2 teams), Hayling Island, Portsmouth (2 teams), Southampton, and a misfit team called 'One Step Beyond' played more than 5 games each

during which 'player fines' for minor transgressions added to the charities coffers. All the teams entered into the spirit of the occasion by dressing appropriately for the occasion.

Emsworth sported pink bras in honour of one of their player's wives who died last year from Breast Cancer.

Hayling Island sported pink tutus - which they took an unnatural fondness to !

Portsmouth Pinks looked very fetching in

shoulder length pink wigs, and one of the 3 referees dressed as a clown !

Afterwards Havant & Waterlooville Walking Football Club - who won the tournament - kindly hosted a buffet for all the participants back at their Westleigh Club House where a never ending raffle further added to the funds raised.

Havant & Waterlooville FC – Review by Simon Payne The Hawks battle for survival in the Vanarama National League South table looks to be going down to the wire as results have left the team lying just a point above the relegation zone.

With just four league games remaining against play off hopefuls Truro City, mid table Concord Rangers and fellow strugglers Weston-Super-Mare and St Albans City every point will be crucial and they also have a cup final and semi final sandwiched inbetween which could see the season end on some sort of high.

Havant hauled themselves out of the bottom three in February with crucial 2-1 home wins against Bishops Stortford and Maidstone. The steady climb continued into March starting with a good 2-2 away draw against league leaders Ebbsfleet United and followed by two

further victories at the Westleigh against Dartford and a crucial six pointer against Hayes and Yeading seeming to pull the club closer to safety. However a disappointing start to April saw first a 3-2 loss against Wealdstone in which the Hawks had led 2-0 and then a 1-0 home defeat against Chelmsford City.

In the cups, despite being comfortably seen off by Grimsby in the FA Trophy last 16 the Hawks still remain in two cup competitions. In the Hampshire Senior cup progress has been made to the final with a trip to St Marys on the 12th April against Winchester City. AFC Portchester proved to be a difficult obstacle in the quarter final taking an early two goal lead. HEALTH & WELLBEING Don’t let arthritis get your down With summer just around the corner, most of us want to spend more time outdoors moving about and enjoying the weather. But for sufferers of osteoarthritis, movement might mean pain and discomfort.

Contrary to popular belief, resting the joints is not the answer and regular exercise can help ease the effects of osteoarthritis.

Around 8.75 million people in the UK have sought treatment for osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis which causes joint stiffness and pain. This means that 33 percent of people aged 45 and over, and 49 percent of women and 42 percent of men over the age of 75 suffer from the condition.

Osteoarthritis can affect any joint, but it most often causes problems in the knees, hips and small joints of the hands. As a degenerative disease, osteoarthritis can worsen over time and cannot be cured. A real tell-tale sign of osteoarthritis is the associated stiffness in the mornings and after excessive activity.

The severity of the condition can vary greatly from person to person and between different joints. For some, the effects are

mild and come and go. Others experience continuous and severe problems.

Regular exercise can help stave off the effects of arthritis, but you should make sure to do low impact exercises such as walking, cycling and swimming. If you prefer swimming, please be aware that breaststroke may put a lot of strain on your knee and hip joints.

To the right you can find some examples of exercises you can safely do to help with osteoarthritis. It is also advisable to speak to a physiotherapist about your individual situation and how to best manage your condition.

Hip exercises

Active Hip flexion Lie on your back with your legs straight. Slowly bend your knee by sliding your foot up towards your buttocks as far as you can. Hold for a count of 5, relax and repeat 5 times, increase as you feel comfortable. If this is difficult, placing a plastic bag under your heel can make this movement easier.

Repeat 3 times a day .

Active Hip abduction Lie on your back with your legs straight. Slowly slide your operated leg out to the side as far as you can. Then slide your leg back towards the middle. If this is difficult, place a plastic bag under your heel to make this exercise easier. Repeat 5 times, 3 sessions a day. Increase as you feel comfortable.

Active Knee flexion (bending) Lie on your back with your legs straight. Slowly bend your knee by sliding your foot up towards your buttocks as far as you can. Hold for a count of 5, relax and repeat 5 times, increase as you feel comfortable. Repeat 3 times per day.You may use a plastic bag or tin tray lid under your heel to reduce the friction and aid the bend of your knee.

Knee bracing Lie on your back with your legs straight. Tighten the top of your thighs by pressing the back of your knees into the bed. Hold the contraction for a count of 5, relax and repeat 5 times, increase as you feel comfortable. Repeat 3 times per day.

ST FAITHS CHURCH CLOCK FACE APPEAL Two out of our three clock faces have deteriorated to the point where their details cannot be read even the hands of the clock are difficult to pick out.

The third (North) face was more recently refurbished, but even that looks 'tired'. Our aim is to refurbish all three clock faces so that they can be read easily, all over the town, and considerably improve the heritage offer of the town centre.

Residents and visitors will benefit from an improved recreational and retail experience. The church clock faces, once refurbished, will help to underpin the sense of Havant moving forward as a high quality shopping and leisure destination. Coupled with the fact that the Church itself is always open during day-light hours for visitors, the Church and its clocks will rightly stand as an

Thursday 3rd March was a landmark day in Havant Academy's calendar; World Book Day! As always, the students and staff got right into the spirit of the day.

The Year 7s enjoyed a visit from Rachel Delahaye, the author behind the 'Jim Reaper' novel. Rachel brought along a series of fantastic ideas to her workshop and the Year 7s soon had some great ideas for their own stories!

In the library, a group of Year 7 and S students were taking part in the Read-a-thon.

This annual event encourages students to read all day and the children certainly were up to the task!

Staff were very impressed with their efforts as all through the day the group were quietly reading. Well done Read-a-thon-ers!

Summer Holidays 2016 This summer Havant Academy have teamed up with the Ageas Bowl and Hampshire Cricket to offer a week long course for children aged 6 - 15 years.

Courses will cover all elements of Cricket, delivered by highly qualified coaches.

This holiday club will run from the 25th July - 29th July on the Academy field, between 9.30am and 3.30pm each day. The cost of the course is £30 a day or £130 for the week.

Alan Mak MP Report on my work locally and in Westminster It’s been a busy few months as I’ve continued to raise local issues in Westminster, whilst attending a high number of events locally across the Havant constituency to engage with residents. I was honoured to be named amongst the top twenty most active new Conservative MPs since May 2015 by the Independent newspaper. Thanks to all residents for their continued support.

Whether it’s been pushing for flexible rail fares for local commuters. Lobbying for more funding for local schools or backing the Government’s tax cut for working

people in March’s Budget, my Westminster work has remained busy.

My local work has continued apace too.

Thanks to all readers who supported my Havant Small Business Awards by sending in nominations over the last few months.

There are over 150 businesses in the running for various prizes and winners will be listed in the next issue.

I enjoyed visiting the excellent new One Eight Zero development in Bedhampton, where I met new home-owners. I also met talented apprentices from Barratt Homes, who are also building the new Denvilles community centre.

There’s much for readers to look forward to as summer approaches. I recently opened the Emsworth Museum’s 2016 Summer Season, featuring an engaging exhibition on local oyster boat and tourist attraction - the ‘Terror’.

I’m nearing the end of my year-long “work experience” with the Royal Navy alongside my MP duties. I recently mucked for a couple of days on-board HMS Monmouth – the most decorated frigate in Her Majesty’s fleet – during her recent passage from Cardiff to Plymouth, including helping to navigate and cook the crew’s evening meal.

My next drop-in surgeries will be at Emsworth’s Methodist Church on Friday 6th May (4.30-6PM) and the Meridian Centre, Havant on 10 June (10-11.30AM).

Food and Wine Oak in Wine

Jonathan Rogers from The Solent Wine Experience/VIN Wine Merchants looks at this age old practice.

Around fifteen or so years ago, wines with heavy oak ageing were all the rage, and us consumers were loving them. It seemed to be a fashionable thing, to drink wines that had been fermented or aged in oak, just like drinking Prosecco or Pinot Grigio is now.

The use of oak in wine making has been around for at least two millennia, first coming into prominent use by the Romans.

They first used oak barrels for transportation but it soon became clear to them the various differences it gave to the wine often making it taste better. Today wine makers use oak to alter the various properties of wine, including colour and taste.

The distinctive flavours it adds to the wine include vanilla and tannin. Although tannin is not an actual flavour of wine, it can be attributed to the sense of touch, giving a rough sensation on your tongue and the inside of your cheeks.

Tannin will give body to the wine making them fuller although this can sometimes be hidden by the sweeter flavours oak also gives to the wine. It will round off the acidity levels creating a softer wine with more depth.

During the 60’s the famous Californian producer Robert Mondavi experimented more with oak and more winemakers began to follow his examples. Heavily oaked Chardonnay began to pour out of California during the subsequent decades and this is what we were all enjoying during the nineties.

The majority of the wine producing world use oak, more so in regions such as Rioja in Spain where it is law. Labels with the term ‘Reserva’ or Gran ‘Reserva’ will indicate oak ageing in both red and whites and the length of time the wine stays inside the barrels can be anything up to 12 months and beyond in some regions.

Nowadays it seems that the crisper whites with more acidity are in favour with Sauvignon Blanc, particularly from New Zealand, the grape of the moment. Only certain white grapes benefit from oak and Sauvignon Blanc is not one of them. Our

tastes do change and it seems that at the moment the vanilla, creamy whites are out of favour. Having said that, they are still amazing wines.

Celeriac, Apple, Lentil and Coriander Soup This recipe uses an unusual root vegetable Celeriac which is now becoming more widely known. This soup uses lentils to make it more filling and apples for extra taste. This is just the soup to make if you are looking for a soup that is light on calories and high on taste. Ingredients 1 celeriac approx 900 g 450 g red eating apples (3/4) 200 g dry red lentils 1 vegetable stock cube Small bunch coriander (30 g pack) 2 litres of stock

Wash and quarter apples and roughly chop

2. Wash lentils and cook with boiling water (1/3 lentil to water). Bring to a boil and reduce heat to a simmer.

Stirring occasionally. Add stock cube to the lentils and 2 litres of boiling water.

3. Wash and quarter apples and roughly chop. Keep covered in bowl of cold water until ready to use. Add to roasting pan with celeriac and cook for 5 minutes.

4. Remove coriander leaves from stalk and add leaves to the soup along with roasted celeriac and apple and stir well. Season well with pepper and salt.

Using hand blender puree the ingredients. If you prefer a thinner soup add more water at this stage and mix well.

AUCTIONEER & ANTIQUES ENTHUSIAST HILARY BOLT on her POTS OF WISDOM Over the last 20 years I’ve been lucky enough to turn a life-long interest in “old things” into my current day jobs – auctioneering in Emsworth Auctions and running an antiques & collectables shop, Emsworth Antiques Etc. in the town’s West Street.

I’ve always loved the ‘social history’ aspect of the items which move back into our consciousness from the forgotten and neglected corners of our family homes. The personal flotsam and jetsam that meant something to our predecessors; mementoes of highdays, friends and family.

The second half of the C19th saw great changes in the lives of the newly rising middle classes, as well as the workers, whose lives were beginning to benefit to some degree from the march of the British Empire and the economic markets being carved in its wake.

So The Great Exhibition of 1851, held in Crystal Palace, brought the highest quality of Victorian style and taste to the masses who could afford to visit.

From there, the ripples of designer art and artefact spread out across the country, bringing new styles to the market with new creators and producers to make them.

In the west country, discovery of fine terracotta clay beds led to the formation of a number of potteries centred around the Devon town of Torquay.

And so the names of potteries such as Watcombe, Longpark and Aller Vale come into being.

Early wares consisted of high quality terracotta busts, statues and classical urns and vases, often unglazed or with enamelling and gilding.

A Longpark Pottery jam dish terracotta had declined, and when the Aller Vale Pottery at Kingskerswell was rebuilt after a fire in 1881, their wares were rather crude and followed the Arts and Crafts tradition, decorated with slips and glazes creating a folk-art look with idiosyncratic colouring and patterns. At this stage the pots were shipped around the country from the potteries; useable dishes, bowls and jugs.

But social change was taking place – in 1871 the Bank holiday Act gave workers a few paid holidays each year, and in the 1870s some clerks and skilled workers began to have a week of paid annual leave. So the buyers began to visit the coastal pottery areas for holidays, and a mass market in souvenir wares took off.

At some stage, the homely homilies with which the Torquay wares had begun to be decorated : adages such as “A pound of pluck is worth a ton of luck” or

“More haste less speed” take on an exaggerated, pseudo West Country dialect such as “Be aisy with the craim” or even, “Demsher craim - Tak en try et”.

I just love these relics of a bygone era, when the pot users began to make their way to the pots, and the pot decorators could expound their philosophies and instruct us in the best way to live our lives – all to be gleaned over the breakfast, lunch or tea table. But then, you know what they do say, my dearies : “When the day breaks, make the most of the pieces”

By Reg Moule EARLY MAY • Keep all newly planted items well-watered. This includes ones planted last autumn • Sow seeds of herbaceous plants • Sow or turf new lawns and keep mowing established ones – but not too low • Treat difficult lawn weeds e.g. clovers, black medic with Scotts Weedol Lawn Weedkiller • Plant out cabbage, cauliflower and other brassicas but take precautions against root fly • Don’t forget your houseplants feed and water them regularly MID MAY • Sow suitable varieties of pansies to flower from autumn throughout the winter • Sow biennials for flowering next spring onwards e.g. wallflowers, mysotis, sweet williams, foxgloves and honesty • Plant out chrysanthemums for flowering in borders or for cutting • Plant out summer bedding plants when frost risk is minimal • Plant out sweet corn in blocks, rather than a long row, as they are wind pollinated • Take cuttings from dahlias and chrysanthemums for flowering later in summer • Plant tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, cucumbers etc. in a cold greenhouse • Make up summer flowering hanging baskets and containers. Treat them with Bug Clear Ultra Vine Weevil Killer as a precautionary measure.

LATE MAY • Prune clematis montana straight after flowering, if they are getting out of bounds • Sow some half-hardy annuals for use a winter pot plants e.g. calceolarias, schizanthus and cinnerarias • Beware of houseplants getting scorched on sunny windowsills • Listen to the weather forecast in case of any nasty late frosts.

REG’S QUIRKY GARDENING TIP SEEDLINGS ENJOY PETTING SESSIONS Yes, research has shown that seedlings and young plants, particularly vegetables, grow more strongly when they gently caressed on a regular basis.

Passing a soft broom or brush over them lightly, first one way then the other, twice or three times a day should produce a positive response. In the absence of a brush a couple of sheets of folded newspaper or light card would also do the trick.

One of the most likely suggestions as to why stroking has this strengthening effect on plants is that it imitates the effect of a strong breeze, encouraging stiffening of the stems.

Reg was one of the regular presenters on 'Gardener’s Diary'; which was one of the longest running, continuous gardening series, giving hands-on tips and advice for over seven years, on ITV and satellite channels.

Park Community School news World Book Day World Book Day takes place every year and is an opportunity to celebrate the reading culture that we have at Park Community School, and which is encouraged by the UK education system.

On Monday March 22, 26 students took part in an attempt to set a world record for the largest ever nationwide book quiz. Each student family had their own team, and the Nelson Ninjas triumphed over the Brunel Beasts by a single point! The Guinness Book of World Records confirmed that the quiz set a new world record so well done to everyone.

On World Book Day, Thursday March 3, Park was invaded by a whole host of book characters including Lord Voldemort, Pippi Longstocking, Cruella de Vil and Willy Wonka as staff dressed up for the occasion. Students competed to identify as many of the characters as possible, with Ellie-May Hackett spotting the most. Well done Ellie-May!

Tanzania Trip

Fairtrade Hunt Students and staff who were lucky enough to find a hidden Fairtrade voucher could then exchange it for a Fairtrade product at a special store set up for the day at Park.

The hunt was a big success and received very positive feedback from students; so much so they have asked us to organise an Easter egg hunt!

A group of five teachers from Park were lucky enough to spend an amazing and inspirational nine days in Tanzania, to continue to develop the relationship with The Grassroots Trust and the Iyela Secondary School.

This was the second time that staff from Park had visited Mbeya, in Tanzania.

This time our own students didn’t go and we worked with their students, teaching groups of between 60 and 100.

Postcode Publications THE PITCHPIPERS LADIES BARBERSHOP HARMONY CHORUS CELEBRATES 40 YEARS IN HARMONY The Pitchpipers were founded in 1976 with a very small group of ladies meeting in the home of their founder and Musical Director, Marilyn Penketh.

The ladies chorus has supported both local and national charities since that time and has appeared in concerts at home and abroad. They have a sister chorus in Sonsbeck, Germany and also in Eindhoven, Holland with whom they meet up from time to time.

They constantly strive to improve their vocal standard which has been achieved by vocal coaching from both home and abroad and competing in the Ladies Association of British Barbershop national contests where they are judged in Music, Singing and Presentation.

When in contest, they have always believed in delivering a musical package which is themed with costumes rather than just singing 2 unrelated songs ~ as you will see from the photographs. Their themes have been American footballers, pirates,

Elvis, witches, sailors, 1920s, 1950s, ghouls & skeletons plus many other characters along the way!

Rehearsals are open and we are always delighted to give a warm welcome to any prospective members who would like to come along and listen to what we do. We are ordinary women singing extraordinary music, a cappella style and our age range is 18 – 90 years. There is no requirement for any of our members to read music.

For the last 11 years, In the run-up to Christmas we have invited able singers to come and join us for 6 weeks rehearsals before performing as The Portsmouth Ladies Christmas Choir for the Rowans Hospice at Cascades, Portsmouth (10th December this year) and other venues across the Portsmouth area.

Washing the Dog’s Bottom - a new novel by ChrisTonge Simon DeCandle believes that life owes him a living, except he is addicted to avoidance. His Girlfriend Marion has had enough of him, his mistress Lara dumps him, but he is captivated by the enigmatic Saliah. Following his heart and not his head, he becomes implicated in a criminal act. His innocence is undermined by his procrastination and dumfounds the police when they ask why he was washing the dog’s bottom.

The novel is about middle-class expectation and the falsehoods that are created by nostalgia. Simon DeCandle has high expectations and he assumes that life will deliver success but with the minimum of effort on his behalf. His relationships are doomed to failure by this indolent behaviour, and his sense of entitlement comes from the pretence of respectability that governed his parents lives. The novel is humorous with DeCandles buffoonery, also scandalous by his behaviour. The term Washing the Dog's Bottom - is something the main character does to avoid doing something else that's more important - in other words he procrastinates. When I was thinking about a title, I saw an old copy of Catch 22 on my book shelf, and I suppose it was a conceit to think the term Washing the Dog's Bottom as a phrase to lob at someone who's procrastinating! Therefore to Wash the Dog's Bottom means doing a job, no matter how revolting, to avoid doing a job you should be doing!

I was inspired by events that I witnessed as a teenager, and also in later life, by a few son's and daughters from so called successful families. Knowing they had relatively privileged childhood's, I found that there was a common thread that bound

them together. Some would drop out of university or others would leave school after A levels and drift - much to the concern of their parents - and then would complain that any job that came up wasn't for them. I remembered one mother muttering that their son thinks that life owes him a living.

As regards where I got the inspiration for the washing bit. I once had to write a letter to an insurance company, and for some reason I kept delaying it. At the time we had a white Samoyed dog that had a delicate stomach. Without going into too much detail, I found myself cleaning his rear end rather than writing the letter! Bizarre I know!

I have been writing for many years, although this is my first published work. I started to write the book in January 2000, but if you compressed the actual time I worked on it, I suspect it would be about 4 years, not the sixteen years labour-of-love.

There were periods when I didn't touch it, a whole year in one case. I also went about writing it in a rather haphazard way without creating chapter plans, but there was a basic structure in my head; I suppose I learnt how to do it as I was writing. I tried to put it

past literary agents, but made the mistake of presenting the MS too soon. I learnt that they had their own objectives to fulfil and by that time I felt I had gone too far with the book to give up. Anyway, I heard about Feedaread.com and published it through them. It's an Arts Council funded site that is allied to some publishing houses. I do feel that I run the risk of being accused of Vanity publishing - this novel hasn't cost me anything to publish, only the cost for the proof copies at a cheap rate. I suppose to call something a Vanity publication is a pejorative term to those who haven't had to run the gauntlet of literary agents and fiction editors. I would love to have a literary agent and someone to edit my work, but I have entered into this project in good faith, and I have certainly been rigorous in the language, structure and then proof reading. I have also had the MS read by others to added their alterations and corrections.

I'm 57 and I live in Rowlands Castle. For the past 35 years I have worked in television as a film editor for the BBC in Cardiff, Birmingham and Manchester and now for ITV in London. I have also directed a few short films over the years that fall into the entertainment/lifestyle category.

I kept pursuing my writing after the favourable remarks I received in academic circles (I completed an MA in Film Studies) and through writing groups. There is certainly a transferable skill from being a film editor to a writer, in regards to pacing the narrative, and I hope that Washing the Dog’s Bottom has both a strong plot and conjures up strong visual images.

The book is available now on Amazon, also I hope to sign up to a distribution deal.

Grease Extravaganza

In March years 7-11 presented an eagerly awaited production of Grease.

Both staff and students produced an outstanding showcase of acting, singing and dancing. With both nights sold out, the show went down very well with the audience who had nothing but rapturous praise for the performance.

The school community had been working hard for nine months in Drama, Music, Dance, English, Learning Support,

Art and Food Technology to produce the stars on stage as well as set designs, programmes, costumes and popcorn for the event. Staff and students gave up their time after school, at weekends and in holidays to produce this extravaganza.

Tilly Moret’s cake sale raised money for Cancer Research a charity very close to her heart.

The morning of the sale arrived with reception literally full of beautiful homemade cupcakes, biscuits, fudge and other assorted cakes.

During break and lunch, Tilly and a team of her friends and staff sold the cakes to the students, the kitchen ladies and staff. We were completely overwhelmed with the generosity of staff and students, many of whom also donated extra money. The atmosphere was amazing and the students were a credit to Warblington School as they waited patiently to choose their cakes. success.

The show had many highlights like the song ‘Grease Lightning’ which was fun, exciting and made you want get up and dance. Another highlight was ‘The Hand Jive’ which included the whole cast, who were obviously having a good time working together; this joy was contagious and the audience were soon up and jiving along.

The show’s two lead vocals also excelled during the song ‘It’s Raining on Prom Night’ that had everyone in tears.

After two great sessions of selling, the money was counted. Tilly had raised an amazing £462.92. It was a phenomenal event, which was very well supported by parents, students and staff and we are extremely pleased to present Cancer Research with a cheque for such a large amount of money. Well done Tilly.

Too many individual performances stood out to mention them all here, showing what talent we have at Warblington School. From the leads to the chorus they were all a pleasure to watch.

The Performing Arts Department would like to say how proud they are of everyone involved and we look forward to the next production.

CRAFT BEERS – Enjoy your local brews

Dark Side of the Brew There was a time when all beers were dark in colour which was due to the fact that barley became smoked during the malting process. As brewing became more industrialised there was a trend to produce brighter sparkling ales. Up until the 1970’s Mild which was a dark brown beer was very popular but it was side-lined as more people started to drink lager. Darker beers have a very full, malty flavour and tend to be stronger than bitter. There is no precise definition of a dark beer but the style encompasses beers which could be described as Brown Ales, Old Ales, Strong Ales and Winter Warmers. Generally speaking, we are talking about dark coloured, malt forward, stronger beers, many of which were traditionally brewed in the winter months. I have been going around our local off-licences seeking out interesting bottled versions of these fine beers.

Downton Dark Delight Strong Dark Ale 5.5% abv This is not what they drink at Downton Abbey although I am sure it would have gone down well in the servants’ hall.

Downton Brewery is based in the village of Downton, some 6 miles south of Salisbury.

They started brewing in 2003 and have a 20 barrel plant from which over 100 outlets are supplied. Dark Delight pours a dark brown colour with a woody aroma. The flavours are complex with coffee and chocolate coming forward but with hops and yeast in the background. Downton use no less than five different hops in this brew which is also available from the cask at

selected pubs. The bottle I sampled was bottle conditioned. This is a very pleasant full flavoured beer to drink with a robust meal such as roast venison or roast beef.

Firebird Old Ale XXXX 4.5% abv Firebird began brewing in 2013 in the

up by Tom Parker Bowles, who supply pubs with snacks such as pork scratchings. They have diversified into contract brewing and this beer is brewed for them by Lancaster Brewery. It is currently the only beer in Britain that is brewed with added chestnuts.

West Sussex village of Rudgwick , which is near Horsham. They offer no less than 6 cask ales and 8 bottled beers. Old Ale XXXX is a very dark brown brew with a bready aroma. The taste is of rich smooth coffee and milk chocolate. It is a malty beer but without any burnt taste. What impressed me most about this beer was its smoothness. Although it is not particularly strong I think it is best enjoyed by being sipped slowly with a roast dinner.

Mr Trotter’s Chestnut Ale 4.0% abv Mr Trotter are a West Midlands firm set

The beer is a copper brown in colour with a bready, chestnut aroma. The overall flavour a smooth, hoppy, sourdough taste with only a hint of chestnut. A beer that would go with most meals.

Harvey’s Lewes Castle Brown Ale 4.8% abv Harvey’s have been brewing continuously in the East Sussex town of Lewes since 1790. They own 48 pubs and supply over 500 free houses across the south. Harvey’s Brown is a traditional brown ale which won “Best Brown Ale” at

the World Beer Awards in 2015. The beer pours dark brown and has a toffee aroma.

The taste is distinctly caramel with a lovely smooth body. It may be a little sweet for some peoples taste but is a fine example of a once popular beer style. A beer to enjoy by sipping slowly, perhaps towards the end of the day.as a nightcap.

Adur Brewery Merry Andrew Dark Strong Ale 6.2% abv Adur started brewing at Steyning, West Sussex in 2008 with a 5.5 barrel plant.

They produce a wide range of cask ales and bottle conditioned beers. Merry Andrew is named after Dr Andrew Boorde who was Henry VIII’s doctor. It is a very dark ale with a liquorice aroma. This beer has a very full, strong taste of chocolate and malt. It is quite sweet and has a very big flavour. This is a strong beer which would go well with oxtail casserole or other similar beefy dishes.

Hogsback Old Tongham Tasty OTT 6.0% abv This Surrey brewery opened in 1992.

They have recently started growing their own hops on a neighbouring farm. This beer is styled as an Old Ale and is made with Pale, Crystal, Chocolate and Wheat mal to which Fuggles hops are added. It is a dark brown beer with a toffee aroma. It has a very full strong flavour. I felt this was a bit like some of the American extreme beers which are inspired by traditional English ales but are much stronger and more flavoursome. This beer would go well with a barbecue.

During Down Syndrome Awareness Weekend, 96 volunteers braved the 100m descent to abseil down the Spinnaker Tower, all hoping to raise awareness about Down Syndrome as part of Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association’s awareness celebrations. Emma is a keen supporter of the charity, and when she heard about the awareness weekend, she was very happy to be involved. Emma said, ‘Being a girl from Portsmouth, I was absolutely thrilled to be asked to support Portsmouth

DSA’s awareness celebrations. Scott said, ‘It was a real honour to be asked to support a charity which provides so many valuable services for children with Down syndrome in the local community. They have been a real life-line, and I honestly don’t think Sebby would have made such good progress without their support.’

Charity Chairwoman, Rachael Ross said, ‘The weekend has been a huge success, not only generating vital funds for the charity, but also raising awareness about Down syndrome.

Several prominent businesses including our charity partners Zurich, Sainsbury’s and

Warner Goodman, entered teams to show their support. We have once again been overwhelmed by the generosity shown by our families, supporters and the community.’

Portsmouth DSA’s awareness abseil is expected to raise over £30,000, and all funds will be used to provide specialist services for children with Down syndrome which they wouldn’t otherwise receive. The charity which is self-funding and run by volunteers was awarded the Points of Light Award recently by Prime Minister, David Cameron, for outstanding charity work.

Staff and pupils of Mengham Junior School were thrilled to welcome a team from the Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium.

As part of their current topic,Year 6 are learning all about electricity. Through a series of hands on experiments, they were able to see how simple and elegant electromagnetic forces can be. They also made an electromagnet and constructed a simple motor so that they could see first hand how motors work. A Royal Night Out Lights… Camera… Period costume comedy.

Although I am not a big fan of these sorts of films, I was very surprised at how good fun it was. At the start I had low hopes, being the sort of person not really into this genre. However, after a couple of seconds I started to get into the story and the characters who were all played marvellously by the talented cast. The cast simply sparkle and bring extra light to the show. The cinematography is exquisite, perfectly evoking the period and being just beautiful to look at.

Feast This gloriously gory, monster horror is a brilliant straightforward flick. Feast certainly knows what the target audience wants, and delivers in gallons.

There’s also some black humour, and, whilst the story is predictable, who will survive the onslaught is not. A fun little shocker for those who like their horror painted red.

New Indoor Play Centre opens at Havant Leisure Centre Now open at Havant Leisure Centre is an exciting 4 storey indoor play centre, called Horizon Oceans of Play welcoming toddlers and children to try out the new freshly themed centre.

Carl Shear, Operations Manager at Horizon Leisure Centre said ‘We are really pleased with the fresh unique indoor play centre. Each time they visit Horizon Oceans of Play at Havant or Horizon Word of Play at Waterlooville they can get their passport stamped to get their 5th and 10th visit free. Toddlers can play with the fish, swim with the seals and go on an underwater adventure discovering creatures under the sea.

The laughs were almost all really funny, and I had to brace myself in order to not laugh-out-loud, which was quite hard to do, I have to say.

If you’re not a big fan – like I am – of the period comedy, I highly reccomend this film. It will change your perspective of this genre. For those who are big fans of this genre, it will be a very worthwhile experience.

Both Horizon Oceans of Play and Horizon World of Play indoor play centres provide two great facilities for children with a fun and unique experience that makes them want to come back and discover more about the world and oceans!

In March HAGO played, along with the wonderful 'Achoired Taste', a concert at the commencement of The Petersfield Music Festival at the Festival Hall in the town.

It was a marvellous evening with an enthusiastic audience, friendly and helpful organisers and support and singing along from the choir, especially in 'Rocking all over the World'.

Hyden WI

Hyden WI Clanfield is a very lively group and are always keen to try new things and to learn.

We have a very successful ukulele band as the result of excellent tuition by two very musically gifted grandsons of one of our members. So much interest has been shown that the boys are now taking on a new group of beginners.

Recently we were visited by a dance teacher who demonstrated the art of Egyptian belly dancing followed by a lesson in which many of our group participated which caused much hilarity by both 'dancers' and onlookers. Will this taster prompt a demand for regular belly dancing classes?

Petersfield South Downs Probus Club The purpose of Petersfield South Downs Probus Club is to provide a regular meeting place for retired or substantially retired professional and business people of either sex.

Club meetings take place at The Half Moon pub in Petersfield on the last Tuesday of each month (except August and December) and commence at 1100 AM for 1130 AM. After a brief session of Club business, members and guests are treated to an entertaining Talk by a guest Speaker or a PSDPC member followed by a fine two-course pub lunch and a ‘heads or tails’ chance to win a bottle of wine.

Gary Milton 49, lives in Waterlooville. He is training for a 200 mile bike ride to raise money for Spica Warrior, the UK’s only developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) dedicated charity.

DDH occurs when the hip socket doesn’t form correctly and left undiagnosed this silent condition can lead to a life of pain, disability and hip replacements.

On Monday 11th September the down to earth handyman will swap his van for a bike and pedal the Grand Union Canal towpath from Birmingham to Brentford via Northampton, Aylesbury, Wendover and Slough.

Gary said, “Whilst many children, and adults, have DDH, there is a lack of awareness and support for the condition that has debilitated one of my closest friends. There’s no doubt this is going to be a tough challenge but knowing I’ll be making a difference to the lives of the families Spica Warrior work with, will keep me going. It would be brilliant to have the support of the local community behind me and I would love them to check out my Just Giving page to find out more.”

In March some of the members from Catherington WI donned yellow waist coats and collected their litter pickers to give their support to a national campaign in helping to get the country spick and span ahead of Her Majesty’s 90th birthday celebrations in June by spring cleaning Catherington Lane from top to bottom.

By Pietro Rocchiccioli An exhibition at the Spring Arts & Heritage Centre, 56, East Street Havant PO9 1BS, is about the people of Havant, captured in a location central to their community. Concepts of people, space and place are examined to reveal the subtleties of human existence. Open now until Thursday 30th June.

The photographs were taken on film, for the documentary unit during my BA degree course at the University of Portsmouth, my plan was to approach and put into context Havant Town including the social, cultural, and political ramifications showing the socalled modernization of Havant.

This is an expansion of the original exhibition from 2008 entitled 'Parlare’ which roughly translates as - people chatting. At that time I was particularly conscious of the ‘Parlare’ between the people and myself happening in life around Havant, its market, high street, and shopping centre. The portraits centre on the relationships I formed with the subjects, as they told me frankly about their experiences and lives, the places they lived and their thoughts and fears for the future.

I always hoped that one day I could hold a retrospective involving the original models and although I had envisaged a longer

period, considering the current pace of life, this seemed a perfect time to reflect on the juxtaposition of past and present. Posters and adverts will be displayed in the Havant area inviting the people in the photographs to come and have another picture taken, as a comparison against the 2008 version. A

copy of the 2008 photo will also be available for the original subjects.

I hope you will all come and meet me at the open day event, 21st June from 10.00am-2.00pm (whether you are in the photographs or not) to hear some more about these fascinating photographs.

Rowlands Castle Painting Society invites you all to visit their Spring Art Exhibition and Sale. It takes place on the 14th and 15th May in the Rowlands Castle Parish Hall, Links Lane, so make a date in your diaries to come along. The Exhibition promises to be an excellent event. Cantemus Choir’s Double Celebration

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Cantemus Choir and the 90th birthday of the Queen, cause for a double celebration.

Cantemus choir began in 1986 as a small group of singers meeting on Hayling Island. Today there are around 45 members drawn from an area from Portsmouth to Chichester.

The choir meets on Tuesday evenings during term time at Bedhampton Methodist Church at the southern end of Hulbert Road.

The choir gives three concerts each year in the greater Havant area, most recently in Waterlooville, Hayling Island and Emsworth. The musical range encompasses choral classics from mediaeval to modern times, as well as lighter items such as the very singable tunes of Andrew Lloyd Weber and John Rutter. This year’s Easter concert, with a nautical theme, included Haydn’s Nelson Mass and a Beach Boys medley.

Cantemus has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with the choir

of Chichester Cathedral which has provided musical directors, accompanists and soloists for concerts. The choir has benefited enormously from their musical talents. Currently the choir is directed by the cathedral choir’s William Waine, who sings male alto, and is accompanied at rehearsals and concerts by Thomas Castle, who sings tenor.

The celebratory summer concert, at St James’s Church, Emsworth on Saturday June 18th, will pay tribute to the Queen for her 90th birthday, officially marked in June. The programme will include Vivaldi’s Gloria (excerpts from which were sung at Cantemus’s 25th anniversary concert), spirituals arranged by John Rutter, music by Parry and Vaughan Williams from the coronation service and Britten’s arrangement of the national anthem.

The Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance is a registered charity dating back to 1989, and it does NOT receive any subsidy from the Government. It exists to relieve sick and injured people in the South east of England and the surrounding areas by providing a Helicopter Emergency Service (HEMS) and Air Ambulance service for the benefit of the community. Patients are taken quickly and directly by land or air to the most appropriate hospital best able to treat their injuries.

Alan will be telling the Air ACES members & guests about the restoration of the de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito by the charitable organisation – ‘The People’s Mosquito’ - which has a dream of getting a Mosquito aircraft back into the skies.

The de Havilland Mosquito was one of the finest all-round aircraft of WWII. By returning this important aircraft to the sky, this charity hope to honour and keep alive all of the memories of those who built, flew and worked on this amazing aircraft.

The DH.98 Mosquito was a Britishdesigned multi-role combat aircraft that served during WW2 and the post war era.

It saw service with the Royal Air Force and many other air forces around the world.

It is December 1936 and Broadway star William Gillette, admired the world over for his leading role in the play Sherlock Holmes, has invited his fellow cast-members to his Connecticut castle for a weekend of revelry. But when one of the guests is stabbed to death, the festivities in this isolated house of tricks and mirrors quickly turn dangerous.

A hundred years ago, on 31 May/1 June 1916, the Grand Fleet of the Royal Navy and the German High Seas Fleet clashed in the North Sea. Within the space of twelve hours, 250 warships fought the biggest naval battle in history.

The Royal Navy lost three battlecruisers and three armoured cruisers as well as eight destroyers. The German fleet lost a total of eleven ships. A total of 9823 men were lost.

What’s on Aldsworth House Garden Open Day Our Garden at Aldsworth House, Aldsworth, PO10 8Q will be open again on Sunday, 29th and Tuesday, 31st May, 11 – 5. on behalf of the National Garden Scheme, which raises money for many charities mainly those for cancer patients.

The six acre garden is full of peonies, roses, perennials, shrubs and trees many rare and unusual. Delicious refreshments are served all day in aid of St Wilfrid’s Hospice, Chichester. There is a short film of the garden in the 1930s, a quiz for children and plants for sale. Entry £4.

Stronger, More Flexible, Pain-Free Readers My name is Natalie March from Physio-logical, a chartered physiotherapist based within Active4Less in PO9. I hope you found our last self-help exercises for neck pain useful. Today we will be offering some advice and exercises for knee pain.

A common complaint we see in our clinics is patello-femoral pain syndrome (pain at the front of the knee); runners, cyclists, people taking up new sports and activities plus many more suffer from this problem. Most people with this problem have some pain when walking up and down stairs.

Knee pain can have many root causes, such as cartilage tears, osteoarthritis, tendon and ligament sprains. I am going to give you exercises which will help with knee pain due to muscle imbalance which then leads to poor tracking of your knee cap (Patella).

ITB Stretch The ITB (ilio-tibial band) stretch is good for lengthening the tight muscle which runs from outer hip to outer knee which leads to muscle imbalance around the knee.

Cross one leg in front of the other one and bend that knee, keep back leg straight, drop hip of back leg to side, to increase the stretch lift the arm of straight leg up and over.

You should feel the stretch in the outer thigh/hip of the straight leg.

Hold 30 seconds, repeat 2 times, 3 times a day

This exercise helps strengthen the weaker inner thigh muscle to improve the muscle imbalance.

• Feet hip width apart, toes pointing forwards.

Squat down, sticking your bottom out like there is a chair behind you.

Always keep your knees in line with second toe, do not drop your knees in.

Hold 10 seconds, repeat 3 times 10, 2 times a day.

Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association Awareness Abseil I thought you might like to feature our abseil awareness celebrations which took place in March. We are based in Portsmouth, but provide services for the whole of South Hants, have members in the PO9 and PO10, and also provide training and school visits to schools in the area.

Last year we were one of the Mayor of Havant’s charity beneficiaries, and the event was attended by Havant Councillors, as well as EastEnders Actress, Emma Barton, and TV Presenters and Adventurers Scott Heffield and Tim Treloar from Bear Grylls Survival Academy. During Down Syndrome Awareness Weekend, 96 volunteers braved the 100m descent to abseil down the Spinnaker Tower, all hoping to raise awareness about Down syndrome as part of Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association’s awareness celebrations. Hundreds of people turned up to support the event, including Portsmouth born EastEnders Actress, Emma Barton who plays Honey Mitchell, a parent of a child with Down syndrome on the TV soap. Emma is a keen supporter of the

charity, and when she heard about the awareness weekend, she was very happy to be involved. Emma said, ‘Being a girl from Portsmouth, I was absolutely thrilled to be asked to support Portsmouth DSA’s awareness celebrations. This is a cause very close to my heart.’

Adventurers Scott Heffield and Tim Treloar, TV presenters from Bear Grylls Survival School were also there to open the abseil for the charity. Scott said, ‘It was a real honour to be asked to support a charity which provides so many valuable services for children with Down syndrome in the local community. We’ve been so impressed, and would love the opportunity to work with them in the future.’

Members from the UK Garrison turned out to help with the collection and draw in the crowds. They posed for photos with members of the public in return for a small donation, and over £950 was collected.

Charity Secretary, Rebecca Fyans, helped to organise the event, and understands first-hand how beneficial the charity’s services can be. ‘When my son Sebby was born three years ago, the charity provided invaluable advice. They have been a real life-line, and I honestly don’t think Sebby would have made such good progress without their support.’

Charity Chairwoman, Rachael Ross said,

‘The weekend has been a huge success, not only generating vital funds for the charity, but also raising awareness about Down syndrome. Several prominent businesses including our charity partners Zurich, Sainsbury’s and Warner Goodman, entered teams to show their support. We have once again been overwhelmed by the generosity shown by our families, supporters and the community.’

Portsmouth DSA’s awareness abseil is expected to raise over £30,000, and all funds will be used to provide specialist services for children with Down syndrome which they wouldn’t otherwise receive. The charity which is self-funding and run by volunteers, was awarded the Points of Light Award recently by Prime Minister, David Cameron, for outstanding charity work. Twenty-four year-old Leila Malguitou worked alongside volunteers from Togo, West Africa for ten weeks, as part of the government funded development programme, International Citizen Service (ICS).

Leila, worked on a project run by the development charity,Y Care International where she; taught English to pupils in schools, worked in an orphanage where support was given to children and staff, led workshops within the youth prison with prisoners aged 12-17, assisted the YMCA on their developing Slum Projects and raised awareness in local communities on health issues such as Malaria, HIV, AIDS and STI’s (Sexually transmitted infections ). The project also worked in conjunction with parents and disabled children by providing support and creating human rights awareness. In addition, Leila helped build a canteen in a school for children living in one of many slum areas.

ICS allows young people aged 18-25 to contribute to long-term development in one of 28 developing countries. The scheme offers young people a chance to develop personally and learn about team working and leadership on projects that are of a genuine value to tackle social exclusion and poverty in some of the poorest communities around the world.

Leila said: “it was the most life-changing, challenging and rewarding experience working in Togo, and now I am back in the UK, I feel extremely inspired and motivated

by the people I lived and worked with. This news article is just the first step to me becoming more active in my community and hopefully making a positive change in the world. I’m keen to get involved in more volunteering opportunities to help empower young vulnerable people and encourage more people to take part in the incredible opportunity that is ICS.” ‘I have met so many amazing people throughout my ICS journey; it was the most extraordinary ten weeks of my life!

I have gained a whole variety of new skills such as: team work, leadership, project management and excellent communication skills as a result of ICS. It is such a unique experience to work alongside people from a different culture who have requested help from young volunteers to fight poverty and I would encourage anyone aged 18-25 to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity!”

New mural unveiled at Mengham Play Park on Hayling Island A first-of-its-kind mural project, undertaken through a Havant Borough Council initiative, to bring a cheerful new look to a play park was unveiled at a celebration.

Mengham Junior School Visit

The charity challenge of a lifetime Grand Canyon Trek Havant resident, Paula Orton, is to bravely embark on an 8 day trekking challenge in the Grand Canyon, with the aim to raise over £4,000 for local charity, Naomi House and Jacksplace.

Organised by Discover Adventure, specialists in trekking and cycling challenges worldwide for charitable fundraising, Paula’s hiking expedition will depart on 8th October, taking her from the Havasupai Indian Reservation village Supai – the most remote village in mainland USA – into a steep descending trail from the Crater Rim into the Canyon. Each day Paula will be setting off from camp using tunnels, ladders and trails to explore deep clefts and caverns on 8-10 miles hikes. The heights experienced on the descents and ascents experienced on this challenge are NOT for the faint-hearted.

Paula, aged 37 and a Hair and Beauty Clinic owner, is raising money for Naomi House and Jacksplace Children and Young Adults Hospice, to help with the daily running costs of the invaluable services the staff deliver. The hospices provide expert hospice care to more than 280 life-limited and life-threatened children, young people and their extended families from Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, Berkshire, West Sussex, Surrey and the Isle of Wight. They provide individualised care and much needed respite and support for the whole

Staff and pupils from Mengham Junior School on Hayling Island, visited the Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association Centre to present a welcome cheque for £100. The funds were raised when the children wore colourful socks to celebrate differences, and each made a small donation to the charity. The school also started the day with awareness assembly about Down syndrome.

Teacher, Emily Slade said, ‘The children learnt so much, and the day was a huge success. We enjoyed every moment of our fundraising mission!’

Rachael Ross, Chair of Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association, was also impressed with their efforts. ‘It was lovely to have the opportunity to welcome the children to our centre, where they had the opportunity to find out more about what we do, and meet some of our families. We are selffunding, and very much appreciate support from our local schools, and it’s great to see the children playing such an active role in their community.’

Postcode Publications Work Out Your Money in the Community Local charity, Southern Domestic Abuse Service or SDAS for short, run refuge accommodation offering support and temporary accommodation to women and children escaping domestic abuse.

They also offer outreach services to women, children, young people and men not staying in a refuge but still in need of advice, support and information.

Citizens Advice Havant have been helping with financial capability sessions as part of their initiative known as the ‘Work Out Your Money’ project.

Set up by Jon Stuart, CEO, and funded by the Big Lottery, these sessions have been running within the Havant, Hayling Island and the Waterlooville community since 2015.

The sessions aim to help with useful life skills such as household budgeting, money saving tips, energy saving tips and a host of ways to be financially aware.

Feedback from participants includes: “This has had a positive impact on my life”; “A very enjoyable course”; “I have learnt how to save money

on bills” . A spokesperson at Southern Domestic Abuse Service said: "These were just a few of the comments received from our clients after the How To Manage Your Money Workshop. This workshop has been invaluable to our clients and has provided them with the skills and confidence to “work out their money” when they move on. The clients have found it to be both enjoyable and informative and we are looking forward to the next workshop.”

In the recent months the Work Out Your Money team have also run sessions with adult learners at Community First, Havant College, Southern Health, Queen Alexandra Hospital and local Home-Start Centres.

Oarsome-Chance Oarsome-Chance will help to seed and nurture new community and school coastal rowing club and community projects to build and use coastal Skiffs to provide an inexpensive inclusive and accessible sporting activity adding to the existing and growing Skiff coastal rowing scene developing throughout UK. These clubs will facilitate school and community users who wish to progress their participation in the sport of coastal rowing.

Oarsome-Chance and its sponsorship partners will offer bursary financial and management support to help individual communities create and successfully manage a Rowing Club.

Secondary Schools Coastal Rowing programme: Ergo Machine Rowing - Oarsome-Chance and its partners will provide for use in secondary schools and in community facilities Ergo rowing machines to develop an indoor rowing club programme. Dry indoor rowing is an accessible inclusive cardio vascular sporting activity that offers an alternative to mainstream hand/eye coordinated ball sports. A developed national and international competitive scene exists offering a performance development path for all users.

Coastal Skiff Rowing - Schools will be linked to a Hub community rowing club. Operating at an all states usable water location within an appropriate catchment area local school groups can participate in "have a go" sessions and courses. Training guidance and expert coaching help will assist and deliver the on the water experiences. Tailor-made short duration programmes to experience the sport of coastal skiff rowing out on the water.

Our fundamental core aims are long term success with employability help for those that might struggle in conventional classroom and exam achievement and we feel our vocational and project based learning is a good method for delivering this help.

spring 2016 Bicycle Recycling is a social enterprise (wholly owned by youth charity Motiv8) that exists to provide jobs for young people through work experience, traineeships, apprenticeships, volunteers, sessional and salaried jobs.

News update January saw the launch of our Cycle Maintenance & Repair Course, delivered in partnership with Highbury College. The first cohort of young people (age 16 to 19) have started working towards their level 1 and 2 IMI qualifications, and are getting to grips with bike maintenance. people receive additional support in English and maths, and will be given the opportunity to gain valuable work experience with other local employers.

The course is a real stepping stone into bike maintenance and we very much hope that those involved will progress to an apprenticeship with us or elsewhere in the industry.

Bike course brings out the best Olly suffered brain damage when he was hit by a car at the age of eight – but this friendly, determined cyclist has become a dab hand at bike maintenance. Olly is one of four young, long-term unemployed people from Petersfield who have been taught new skills thanks to CTC, the national cycling charity. They have just completed a ten-week bike maintenance course at the Bicycle Recycling shop in Gosport, organised by Andrew Chapman, CTC’s Cycling Development Officer for Hampshire. Olly, AJ, Tyler and Dan are all young people living in Radian housing in Petersfield.Olly says: “I’m really enjoying the sessions.

It is nice to learn what the different parts are called and find out how to fix things. I’m getting out of the house and mixing with people.”Tyler, Bike maintenance course for age 16, has progressed on to the Radian Housing residents Bike Maintenance Academy where funded by CTC he is working towards a Level 2 qualification in cycle maintenance & repair. AJ, age 23, says: “I used to own a BMX and fixed it myself. I’m learning how to fix everything on a bike now and I love it.

I would like to become a bike mechanic.” CTC’s Andrew Chapman said: “The whole bike maintenance programme has been a great success. The growth I have seen with AJ, Olly and the others is fantastic, in terms of both the skills they are learning and their selfconfidence. They really seem to enjoy coming here – they get their coats off the moment they arrive and are ready for work.”

Summer Prep The temperature is steadily rising and it’s time to start wearing fewer layers. Our bodies have been covered and protected over the last few months but it’s time to get ready for summer.

Two areas that could need some prepping before we unwrap are our feet and our skin. Bodyworks have some tips to help you get summer ready…

Treat those neglected tootsies by exfoliating any dry areas using a foot scrub. Make your own at home by mixing a dollop of coconut/olive/almond oil with an equal amount of sugar or salt and adding a few drops of tea tree or lavender essential oil (optional). Blend into a thick paste and massage into the feet.

Brunettes are set to be deep - think edible shades of chocolate and espresso with natural-looking balayage lights to prevent a flat finish. And for those that like a little fire in their life, red is THE shade of the season.

Natural-looking copper is set to be huge, while lighter strawberry blondes, rose gold and darker auburn offer a choice across the spectrum.

Cuticles and nails can become dry and need to be nourished. If you don’t want to buy a specific product for your cuticles then using coconut oil is a great alternative. Keeping the skin that surrounds your nail plates soft and supple will help them grow.

Natural colours might be ontrend but there’s also some incredible looks for those prepared to be a little braver.

Peek-a-boo colour is for the more adventurous client – our customers are loving the technique – and involves carefully placed neon brights designed to complement (or clash with) your base colour. As the hair moves, flashes of the shade will show through.
