Grainger has secured planning consent for a build-to-rent scheme at Berewood, totalling 104 units. This demonstrates that purpose built private rental accommodation is not exclusive to city centres but can be delivered in more suburban environments.

The scheme forms part of Grainger’s larger strategic land development project at Berewood, which will eventually deliver a total of 2,550 dwellings.

By delivering some phases of housing for the private rental market rather than the typical ‘for sale’ model, Grainger will be able to accelerate the delivery of new homes, bringing more residents to live in the area sooner and stimulating the early delivery of schools and other community facilities. The development of homes for the private rented sector (‘PRS’) is in addition

to Grainger delivering the affordable housing requirements at each site, representing 40% of total housing at Berewood.

The newly consented build-to-rent phase at Berewood consists of 104 new homes. Originally, the phase was intended to be brought forward in Year 12 of the development, delivering a combination of private homes for sale and 40% affordable housing. However, between 2001 and 2011, Winchester council saw a 50% increase in the number of households in the private rented sector. Neighbouring council, Havant – which Berewood borders – saw a 100% increase in households in the PRS over the same period. Grainger identified this change in local housing tenures and saw an opportunity to bring forward the delivery.

of rental homes for the local area to satisfy this growing demand.

The build-to-rent phase is earmarked for use in the PRS at market rents for the first 12 years (with the local authority applying a covenant on the land), after which 42 of the homes (representing 40% of the phase) will become affordable housing, in line with the council’s target and the outline planning consent, and be managed by Grainger’s social housing subsidiary, Grainger Trust.

This change is part of a major programme of modernisation and investment taking place across the Post Office network, the largest in the history of Post Office Ltd, which will see up to 8,000 branches modernised and additional investment in over 3,000 community and outreach branches. Howard Broad, Horizon’s Chief Executive said “The Phase 1 extension will be an exciting addition to the facilities already on offer and the Team at Horizon are very much looking forward to welcoming existing and new customers to the Centre. The charity’s objective is to ‘make life better for all our users’ and the extension will certainly encourage more people in the local community to participate in a sporting activity and benefit from a healthier lifestyle”.

The unique three-storey gym, which will contain a large studio for group fitness classes, will support over 100 work stations for cardio and weight resistance training. The new gym will be equally as impressive as the gym which opened last summer at Horizon’s sister Leisure Centre in Havant, which was short-

listed for 'Gym of the Year 2014' at the National Fitness Awards.

The Indoor Play Centre will be of the latest design and will provide children with a fun and exciting place to visit whilst also providing a learning experience. Swain & Co family Solicitors are offering a new service providing advice to cohabiting couples who are purchasing a property together. The new service focuses on situations where: • An unmarried couple are purchasing a property together; • The deposit for the property is being provided by a parent; • The parent may want some protection for their money to be returned should the couple separate.

Unmarried couples have very few rights upon separation which can leave a parent who has helped them financially in a difficult situation. If there is no Declaration of Trust specifically providing for the parent’s money to be paid to them upon the sale of the property, then the only protection the parent has is the good will of the couple to return the money. In the eyes of the law, it will be seen as a gift unless proved otherwise.

A cohabitation agreement can set out the circumstances under which the money will be repaid. This means that in the unfortunate event of a separation, there is one less thing to argue about as it will have been agreed in advance.

This provides certainty for the parents and lessens the risk of their relationship with their child going sour when money gets lost as a result of a separation.

A cohabitation agreement can include anything that the couple would like to and can be adapted to suit the circumstances of the couple entering in to it.

The skills of a Havant lawyer have been recognised by the UK’s leading family law group – Resolution.

Nicola Whitley, family lawyer at law firm Swain & Co, has recently gained Resolution accredited specialist status.

Postcode Publications Futurecity to take on Major Arts Programme Winchester City Council and Havant Borough Council are working with Futurecity to deliver a public art programme in the West of Waterlooville Major Development Area.

Funded by planning contributions from developer Grainger, the arts programme aims to create a distinctive identity for the new housing now being constructed, using culture and the arts to connect people to place, whilst contributing to community spirit and pride of place in the process.

Futurecity is a leading culture and place making consultancy who are responsible for a number of international multi disciplinary art projects including the recently unveiled 78 metre Richard Wilson sculpture ‘Slipstream’ for Heathrow’s new terminal two and as strategists and curators of the Crossrail ‘Culture Line’, partnering world-class contemporary artists and galleries with Crossrail's central London stations. They are also working on a similar large scale new housing development public art programme in Great Kneighton, Cambridge.

Futurecity have engaged a local project manager, Hampshire artist Nicola Henshaw, who produced the sculptures and information panels on the Viaduct Way in

Winchester earlier on this year. Nicola will lead on the community engagement programme, ensuring that residents from the development and the surrounding area are involved in shaping the public art initiatives.

The West of Waterlooville (WoW) development area spreads across the boundaries of the two local council districts of Winchester and Havant in the South of Hampshire. 3,000 homes are being built on land between Denmead (in Winchester District) and Purbrook and Waterlooville (in Havant Borough) over the course of about ten years.

Grainger will make a total allocation of £500,000 for public art during the development period.

Cllr Kirk Phillips, Chair of West of Waterlooville Arts Advisory Panel, said: “The appointment of Future\City was a unanimous decision by the interview panel which was made up of Winchester City Council, Havant Borough Council and Parish Council members and officers as well as a public art expert from Arts Council England South West and a representative from the developers of the site, Grainger. We are pleased to be able to benefit from Futurecity’s extensive knowledge, experience and innovative approach in the

delivery of our programme”.

Belinda Holden, Executive Project Manager & Curator from Futurecity, added: “Our approach to place making and the public art programme for this development is to focus on the rich natural environment, connecting Waterlooville and residents with the ecology and accessing green spaces.

The first commission will explore opportunities in the new Town Park and

main entrances to the development.”

‘to kill a mockingbird’

theatre review by year 10 student katie flower

T

he play ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, shown at Chichester Festival Theatre, gives insight into what it was like to live in 1930s American society. The story was told through the innocent eyes of a young girl, ‘Scout’, who is a voice of reason and equality. Scout’s father, Atticus, is a lawyer defending Tom Robinson, a black man on trial for rape.

The thing that makes ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ engaging for the audience is that there are many underlying moral questions and plot lines that make you sympathise with the characters. It is rare to have a mixture of characters that all have such diverse opinions.

Your own opinions on the characters would be based on whether you agreed or disagreed with their opinions on racial divide, which is the main theme throughout the storyline.

There were many aspects that made this production unique. For example, the cast never left the stage and many cast members took on multiple roles. Even though this could become distracting at times, it meant that you got a much clearer picture of how the cast got into character.

The only character who couldn’t see social differences between people was Scout. For many people this would be a very powerful message. Since Scout is the daughter of Atticus, a man who shows his hatred of the racial divide in his community, you know that this is due to how Scout has been brought up.

For me, this showed that even though Scout clearly lives in a community full of inequality, that kind of anti-racial behaviour must be taught to a child, it is not inherited. This is clearly shown as Scout shows no prejudice towards the black members of her community, even though they see adults demonstrating this kind of behaviour every day.

In conclusion, the play is about being able to look at the world from someone else’s perspective and always standing up for what you think is right. This is a very important message for children to learn. I think that the play does an amazing job of conveying this to the audience.

The Regent’s Park theatre production of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ was the winner of ‘The Best Play Revival’ at the What’s On Stage Awards 2014 and is based on Harper Lee’s Pulitzer prize-winning novel.

South Downs College Fund-raising Banquet

The excitement started to mount late afternoon on Wednesday 25th March, as the last two Michelin starred chefs arrived at South Downs College- Tom Kerridge and Angela Hartnett. Ashley PalmerWatts, Michael Wignall and Nathan Outlaw were already well into the mise en place for their dishes and the restaurant was being transformed into a Michelin standard dining venue. The occasion?- our Grand Charity Banquet held in aid of Hospitality Action, a charity the catering and hospitality team have supported for many years.

In reality the whole build up to the event started in October last year; Ashley Palmer-Watts agreed to lead a team of fellow Michelin starred chefs in the production of a six course banquet to be served to guests paying for this unique opportunity- to be catered for by 5 chefs with a collection of 9 Michelin stars! Iain Baillie- Chef Lecturer-then made contact with each chef and visited them in their various restaurants to discuss and agree their chosen course and dish. Many ‘phone calls and emails later everything came together and tickets went on sale at £175 each.

Within five weeks 80 places had sold out and a waiting list was created for those keen to support the event.

Fine food deserves fine wine and Waitrose, Waterlooville generously agreed to sponsor all the wines for the evening, a wine to compliment each delicious dish.

Sponsorship was also secured from Nyetimber for the champagne reception.

Over the following months plans were fine tuned, students were selected to work alongside the guest chefs and everything started to fall into place. Ryan Humphrey, an ex-student kindly returned to lead the team of front of house students in the service of the dishes and the accompanying wines.

Ryan left South Downs College in 2012 having gained his NVQ Level 3 in Food and Beverage Supervision, having completed the prestigious ‘Ten out of Ten’ management development programme he now is Deputy Restaurant Manager at 5 star Cliveden House in Berkshire.

On the evening, guests enjoyed a superb banquet featuring delicious dishes such as Anjou squab pastrami –Michael Wignall’s first course, saffron risotto- Angela Hartnett’s course, Sharp’s honey spiced IPA cured salmon-Nathan Outlaw’s offering, Cotswold venison from Tom Kerridge and a caramelised apple tart (c.1730) prepared by Ashley Palmer-Watts. A veritable feast!

Additional sponsorship enabled a golden ticket raffle to take place with prizes such as hotel accommodation from BDL Group, a ‘Bean to cup’ coffee maker from

Kenwood and a magnum of Chase Premium vodka. Signed copies of the guest chefs’ cookery books also proved popular prizes with the guests. Each chef had kindly donated a range of dining invitations for auction and with the expertise of our Master of Ceremonies £3,300 was bid!

All of the students who participated in the evening were inspired by the professionalism and exacting standards of the guest chefs. The atmosphere in the kitchen was electric and the friendliness and warmth of the guest chefs made the whole event an evening that will live long in the memories of students, staff and guests. Dan Kent a L3 Professional Cookery student said ‘ To be given the opportunity to work with such highly acclaimed chefs was a great honour and privilege. Working with people that I aspire to work with or at least be at that level in my career, helps me to understand what is possible and to gain insight into their food minds.’

Just under £17,000 was raised for Hospitality Action and handed to Penny Moore, Chief Executive of the charity who was a guest at the event.

She praised everyone who had taken part and thanked South Downs catering students and staff for their hard work, enthusiasm and superb customer service.

Postcode Publications Project wins Heritage Lottery Fund support Waterlooville Community Forum, in partnership with The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre, have received £44,400 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project,: ’Waterloo to Waterlooville 200 years in Waterlooville.’

Led by volunteers from the local community and supported by staff from The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre, Hampshire Libraries and Havant Borough Council, the project focuses on researching and recording the heritage of Waterlooville over the last 200 years, sharing and celebrating it with the wider community.

Waterlooville is so named because soldiers returning from the Battle of Waterloo stopped there at an inn on a crossroads, which was renamed The Heroes of Waterloo. The Waterloo Bicentenary offers an ideal opportunity to mark 200 years of Waterlooville, engage the interest of local people and chart the development and history of Waterlooville from 1815 to 2015.

Children and adults will learn about the history of their town by researching and recording it in a number of ways, using the resources available at The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre and Waterlooville Library to produce a lasting legacy in the form of: a time-line pop-up banner exhibition for display in public and community spaces, and for use by schools and groups in the future to learn about their town's history; a town trail documenting the development of

shops and business in the town, guiding more people into more areas of the town.

There will be commemorative mugs for Waterlooville school children and the opportunity to design a town flag to reflect the town's history and promote a civic identity.

There will be plenty of opportunity for local people to get involved with the project, volunteering to help with researching and recording the history, creating artwork for the time-line and trail, promoting and publicising events, manning information points, helping with administrative tasks and supporting others at workshops and activities.

Saturday June 20 will be a day of celebration in the town with a whole host of events and activities celebrating Waterlooville and commemorating Waterloo, including costumed volunteer soldiers recreating the return from Waterloo and a specially commissioned open air theatre production based on the history of Waterlooville.

During the two weeks leading up to this, there will be a series of talks and events at Waterlooville Library and The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre, commemorating Waterloo and celebrating Waterlooville, culminating on Sunday June 21 with Waterlooville churches coming together for In Praise of Waterlooville, a songs of praise style event, open to all.

PRIZE POETRY COMPETITION 2015 The theme for this year's HLF) competition is “Boundary”. Poets may interpret that theme in any way they choose.

You can enter as many entries as you like which will be adjudicated by Joan McGavin. Each entry attracts a fee of £4.00.

Each poem or group of poems submitted must be accompanied by a completed and signed entry form. If you are submitting more than four poems please list the additional titles on a separate sheet of paper and attach this to the entry form.

All entries must be entirely original work and must not have been previously published, nor must they be published after submission before 31st October 2015.

Poems must not be shared previously with any member of the HLF committee or the judge, nor recorded or reproduced on any website, blog or social media site. HLF reserve the unconditional right not to accept any entry.

Poems should be limited to 40 lines only. Shorter poems are also most welcome. Entries must be in English, typed single spaced on A4, single-sided and securely fastened; each entry starting on a new sheet.

Entries will be disqualified if they show name, address or identifying marks other than the title.

Entries are not returned, so please keep a copy. No corrections can be made after receipt, nor fees refunded.

The closing date for entries is Friday 25th July 2015 and no entries received after this time will be accepted.

First Prize £400 - Second Prize £200 Third Prize £100 In addition, the judge may choose up to 10 commended poems. Prize-winners and commended poets will be informed at least two weeks before the public reading. A full list of winners and commended persons will be published on the HLF website.

Prize winning and commended poets will be invited to a public reading event in Havant in September 2015 – exact date to be announced. The prize winners will be offered short readings to include their winning entry.

The copyright of the entries remains throughout with their authors. However, by entering a poem, the author gives the HLF the unrestricted right to publish or have read publicly the poem, in whatever media or manner the HLF feels appropriate without any royalties being due.

The Rowans Hospice Sorting Depot Needs Help!

Without volunteers many charities and voluntary organisations would just not exist.Volunteers provide the backbone of support to many organisations helping them to provide an essential service to the community. The Rowans Hospice is a local charity dedicated to improving the lives of people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. This week a team of employees from Pfizer, based at New Lane, Havant, spent the day at The Rowans Hospice Warehouse, sorting clothes and other items that the public donate, ready to be sold in one of the 21 Rowan Hospice Charity Shops.

Andrew Cordery from The Rowans Hospice says “It has been fantastic to have 10 volunteers from Pfizer help us for the

day sorting clothes and other donated items at our Farlington sorting warehouse.

We have helped more than 7,000 patients and families across Portsmouth and South East Hampshire, our service is free of charge but costs £4.8 million to continue our work. We are in desperate need of more volunteers, either teams or individuals to continue our work.”

The Pfizer team had a great day meeting other volunteers from The Rowans Hospice with Katrina Flynn from Pfizer going on to say “We have had a fantastic day sorting clothes ready for distribution to the local Rowans Hospice Charity Shops. We would like to say a big thank you to Community First HEH for organising the day and to The Rowans Hospice for making us feel so welcome.Volunteering is great and I would recommend anyone to give it a go, you meet new people, have fun and help to make a real difference to the community”.

The LEADER programme, announced by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs, will provide grants to small businesses, farmers, foresters and communities for projects that create jobs and grow the rural economy.

Funding has been allocated to two Local Action Groups (LAGs), one of which covers Hayling Island, in the Borough of Havant.

Both LAGs are made up of local people and organisations with knowledge of rural issues and their communities. They will decide which projects to fund. The process will be supported by West Sussex County Council. Funds will be available to apply for this summer.

Surf Shack making waves A kiosk on Hayling beach has reopened after a change of ownership.

The Surf Shack Café is at the western end of the Island, close to the Inn on the Beach and the skate park, and is already proving popular with a wide variety of customers.

“We get a really nice age range and mix of customers,’ say new owners John Priestley and Jane Mantle. The couple already run the kiosk on the beach near to Hayling Ferry, and plan to make their second kiosk just as popular with visitors and regulars.

Little Terns spend their winters on the western coasts of Africa and return to Britain to breed on shingle spits, islands and beaches close to the high tide line.

In the past, Little Terns have nested and successfully raised young in Chichester Harbour, although, sadly no young have fledged from here since the 1990’s. a loss of suitable nesting habitat due to development pressure and rising sea levels washing away chicks and eggs from their low lying nests, disturbance from people and dogs off the lead in breeding colonies, limited availability of small fish close to their nesting areas along with natural predation.

Chichester Harbour Conservancy, together with its partners, is committed to managing the Harbour in a way that maximises the ability of birds to nest in summer and feed in their tens of thousands in winter. This March, with volunteer rangers from the Friends of Chichester

Harbour, they cleared vegetation from an area of shingle on Ella Nore Spit in order to create more favourable nesting conditions for the Little Tern along with other sea-birds and waders that occasionally nest here. The Conservancy will also be erecting a temporary electric fence this spring on a small section of the spit in order to protect nesting birds from human and dog disturbance and ground predators.

James Parkin Chichester Harbour Conservancy’s Farming and Wildlife Officer said “Many of the drivers causing Little Terns breeding declines are out of our control, but if we as the general public remain on designated footpaths and keep dogs under close control in areas of importance for nature conservation, then we can relieve our disturbance pressure on these birds and be a part of their conservation effort”.

FIVE ENERGY SAVING TIPS WITHIN YOUR HOME

Households across the Portsmouth area estimate that they spend more than £870 per year on heating bills, yet nearly three quarters of adults still feel cold at home according to new research from Barratt Homes.

Spending patterns on heating vary significantly across the country, the Scots are the biggest, spending paying £167 more than those in the South East.

According to research, the biggest influence on heating bills is the age of the property. Typical new-build home-owners save on average £600 per year when it comes to heating bills.* And the gap between old and new is growing – a recent calculation from Government suggested that new build homes are 30% more efficient than even five years ago.

Rather than reaching for the thermostat, the research said other ways to keep warm in winter months include putting on extra clothes (68%), having a hot drink (54%) or cuddling up with their partner, children or pets (28%). An active 6% resort to exercising indoors to help boost their temperature.

The research also showed that, far from being the heart of the home, the kitchen emerged as the coldest room in the house for one in five home-owners (20%), with the hall a close second (18%).

Barratt Homes which is building energy efficient homes in Havant and Lee-on-theSolent conducted thermal imaging of both a pre-owned and new build home, highlighting the significant differences in heat loss.

Home-owners shouldn’t pay over the odds to stay warm at home, especially as there are many things that can be done to prevent heat leakage. Simple measures such as insulating your home or keeping furniture away from radiators all help to maximise heating use.

Programme your heating. Many new builds come with a programmable room thermostat, but if your home does not have one, consider installing one, as these allow you to control when you want the heat to go on and what temperature you want in your rooms 1. Keep radiators clear of furniture - it reduces their efficiency 2. Draw the curtains or blinds at night and use draught-blockers for doors – this helps to reduce heat leakage

Mark and Faye Wheller of Hayling Island with Helen and Emma Bailey of Leigh Park joined fund-raisers from across the south at the annual awards evening for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) the type 1 diabetes charity.

The evening celebrated the hard work put in by fund-raisers from various events over the year. Mark and Faye organised a hugely successful Walk for a Cure on Hayling Island in September. Helen and Emma made cakes and served refreshments at a race held in Selsey organised by Emma's older brother and also received a donation from the race participants.

They all took part in an indoor skydive held in Basingstoke where Rufus, the charities mascot was also in action.

The two families have joined forces to make 'Team Welly' with the aim of raising even more this year and achieving a platinum award for those raising over 10K. JDRF is improving lives until they find the cure. They fund research to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes. They provide information for children, adults and parents living with the condition, at all stages from diagnosis and beyond. They give a voice to people with type 1 diabetes and campaign for increased focus on, and funding for, research to find the cure.

Postcode Publications The Women’s Institute Centenary Baton Tour To celebrate the centenary in 2015, the WI has sent a baton round every area of England and Wales.

It set off from Anglesey, where it all began, in January 2013 and has already been round much of Wales and England on its way eventually to London in June 2015 in time for the National AGM at the Royal Albert Hall.

In January the baton travelled through West Sussex and on the afternoon of Tuesday 13th January 2015 it was brought into Baton in Havant Hampshire and handed over to the Staunton Group of WIs - comprising Bidbury Mead WI (Bedhampton), Denvilles WI (Havant), Rowlands Castle WI and Stoke & North Hayling WI.

They held a reception at The Meeting Place in Elm Lane, Havant for all members at which the Mayor of Havant was a guest. There was a great spirit of celebration and the WI was toasted with bubbly and celebration cake. From there, in the afternoon, about 15 members representing the 4 WIs, all dressed in 1915 costumes, paraded with a banner to Havant Station where they caught a train to Portsmouth Harbour.

In Portsmouth they paraded to the Maritime Club to join membe rs from the Victory Group of WIs in Portsmouth. Together they paraded through the dockyard, accompanied by the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, and led by a piper and drummer. They boarded HMS Victory where they handed over the baton from Staunton Group to Victory Group who then had to pass it on to the next group in Hampshire.

Hayling College Girls Fundraising Year 8 girls fundraise for British Heart Foundation and spread a little love at the same time!!

Between Friday 6th - 13th February, four wonderful Year 8 girls, Sonet Strachan, Willow Travers Ayre, Scarlet Dymock and Elena Barter, worked incredibly hard in

various ways to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

Sonet and Willow said "We heard about our friends, family and those of our teachers, having heart problems and we wanted to raise awareness. We set up a stall, selling cakes and valentines for a week. We supported the National 'Wear it, Beat it' event on February 6th by asking pupils to donate money for wearing something red to school. We had discussed it all with our Headteacher, Mr Rainford, who agreed to what we wanted to do. As a result of this we raised £418.49. We are proud of our accomplishments and will be doing it again next year."

The modest girls fail to mention that they personally baked the cakes and cookies each evening to sell the following day, and gave up every break and lunchtime for that week to man the stall. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and also thank the pupils and staff of The Hayling College for their kind donations.

Volunteering, it's a 'win win'!

Volunteering adds to 'quality of life' for both the participant and receiver. Corporate volunteering is beginning to become well established with some local companies in the Havant and East Hampshire areas.

A group of employees from Pfizer, based at New Lane, Havant, spent a morning talking to residents at Abbeyfield's home for older people. Janet Duggan, Volunteer Co-ordinator at Community First HEH says "With an ageing population more and more people are leaving their homes to live in a residential setting with many people having no friends or family for support.

The purpose of the volunteers' visit was to talk to the residents, having fun with a quiz and serving home made cakes and tea. Having a visitor for just an hour can make a real difference to the life of an older person living in care and we welcome anyone interested in

volunteering to contact us to find out how they can get involved".

Charlotte Pettit a member of the Pfizer team volunteering at Abbeyfield summed up the feelings of those involved with her comment: "Today has been a wonderful experience to meet the residents and to hear some of their life stories. One of the volunteers at Abbeyfield uses Pfizer Enbrel Products which has given her a new lease of life after living with severe arthritis. We are grateful to be given the opportunity to volunteer in the community by Pfizer".

Food and Wine We love Prosecco As a country, our love affair with Prosecco is growing stronger. Recent figures show that sales of the Italian sparkling wine were up by 75% with all the top major supermarkets recording growth sales year on year. Sales have now overtaken those of Champagne for the first time. Basically, we love the stuff!

Some of the discount retailers such as Aldi and Lidl offer Prosecco at a cracking price of under £6 a bottle which is contributing to the success. However, many leading industry experts believe that this could be harming the brand and believe that many of the producers would be shocked at this price point here in the UK. This though has helped to turn the brand into the perfect alternative to Champagne. That, plus the fact that we prefer the style that Prosecco produces. The light, softer, fruitier characters tend to appeal to us more.

It can also be in a less bubbly style (Frizzante) which we also love.

Prosecco, like Champagne can only come from one particular region, the Veneto in North West Italy. The vineyards are centered around two towns, Valdobbiadene and Conegliano. The best examples of Prosecco come from this DOCG with the very best coming from Cartizze, a small area located within the Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG where the grapes are grown on very steep vineyards. The term ‘Rive’ which you may see on a bottle denotes that the wine was made from the best grapes from the steepest vineyards.

The grape variety used is the Glera, which until 2010 was known as Prosecco, however the name was changed to stop producers in other parts of the country growing the grape and passing the wine off as Prosecco. The production method differs to Champagne which is the reason for the difference in price. With Champagne, more yeast is added to the bottle where the secondary fermentation takes place . The wine is then aged for a minimum of 18 months, usually longer and then disgorged.

With Prosecco, the secondary fermentation takes place in the tank ( Charmat Method) therefore the yeast cells can be filtered out which is less time consuming as the process of disgorgement is not required. Where the majority of Prosecco is made in this way, producers in the Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG area are allowed to use the traditional method as used in Champagne.

The sales trends that suppliers are witnessing indicate that our Prosecco love affair is going to continue for some time, but while Champagne has never left our hearts, who will ultimately win the battle of the bubbles?

Cranberry and Walnut Tea Loaff A delicious wholesome treat for all the family. To make this even healthier, I have reduced the amount of sugar and used orange juice instead of milk and the dried cranberries, walnuts and seeds gives it a beautiful texture along with the extra fibre and natural goodness too. One slice will not be enough! For those of you who are gluten intolerant there is a gluten-free combination self-raising flour available from Dove Farm which should be used in place of the oats, self-raising flour and bran.

1. Rub butter into flour until it resembles fine bread crumbs

Ingredients 150 g unsalted butter 150 g self-raising flour (mixture of wholewheat and white flour if preferred) 75 g caster sugar 50 g oats 25 g bran/ wheat germ 150 g cranberries 75 g chopped walnuts 150 g orange juice 2 large eggs 50 g sunflower/ pumpkin seeds Method 1. Line loaf tin with grease proof paper and pre heat oven to 160 degrees fan.

2. Rub butter into flour until it resembles breadcrumbs using finger tips or dough hook of cake mixer.

3. Stir in sugar, fruit and walnuts and other dry ingredients.

4. In separate bowl beat eggs lightly and add orange juice pour into dry mixture and stir well.

5. Pour into lined loaf tin and bake for 45 to 55 minutes until cooked through and well risen.

CARN POTTERY – THE NEW TROIKA Over the last 20 years I’ve been lucky enough to turn a life-long interest in “old things” into my current day jobs – auctioneering in Emsworth Auctions and running an antiques & collectables shop, Emsworth Antiques Etc. in the town’s West Street.

During my years of interest I’ve seen the market in Victorian wares reduce from being the strongest area, with a rise in the ‘collectables’ market, which attracts the collector to acquire far more recently produced items than before.

A significant area in this market is the work of studio glassmakers and potters.

A number of years ago I became aware of the Carn Pottery in Cornwall. Set up by the potter John Beusmans in his late teens around 1970 (with a little help from his parents), and still in production.

Good early pieces of Carn Pottery will fetch up to about £500 these days. No wonder it’s being tipped as ‘the new Troika’.

My favourite pieces of John’s early work are known as “blue spots” (see this example) and these will generally cost about £200 because they have been out of production for a number of years.

Collectors have sent the prices of old pieces rocketing, but John is still working to earn a living so we support him by selling his current

John alternates geometric designs with floral motifs on his pieces – most being internally glazed vases.

PLAZA YOUTH CONFERENCE Raising Aspirations was the theme at a youth conference held at The Plaza.

A number of pupils in Years nine and ten from all ten senior schools across the borough were invited to attend the conference which aimed to inspire local young people.

Students listened to speeches from guest speakers Joanne White, founder of the local charity Big World Impact and young entrepreneur and self made millionaire Fraser Docherty, who started his own business at the age of 14 selling fruit jam.

Workshops led by Motiv8 and the Wheatsheaf Trust were on offer as well as a Councillors question time when the Leader of Havant Borough Council, Councillor Michael Cheshire and local Councillors answered questions.

As part of the event a special “Approved by You” Scheme empowered young people under the age of 18 to cast their vote for one of three projects which support children and young people across the borough. Short films promoting their services from Havant Home Start, Off The Record and Southern Domestic Abuse Service were shown and pupils made the decision to support SDAS through a ballot.

SDAS CEO Claire Chatwin was thrilled that the majority of the young people had taken the decision to support young people who had experienced domestic abuse.

Havant Volunteer Awards Ceremony 2015 Volunteers across Havant Borough were recognised recently for their volunteering contribution to the local community. The event took place at The Public Service Plaza where volunteers were presented with Certificates from The Mayor of Havant, Cllr Marjorie Smallcorn.

Volunteers were nominated by organisations from across the Havant area.

Tim Houghton, from Community First HEH, who helped organise the event, said “the event was a great success with people being recognised from an amazing variety of areas such as community groups, children and young people, heritage, older people, churches, colleges, families, disability groups, environmental, and the police.” Feedback from the day has been really positive with volunteers saying “We are particularly grateful for the kindness of everyone who looked after us so spectacularly, we were made to feel really special and welcome”.

This year The Mayor Cllr Marjorie Smallcorn presented three special awards.

Two Lifetime Achievement Awards went to Keith Stoneman from Havant Borough Talking Newspaper and Bruce Hodgkins from Havant & East Hampshire Mind. The Young Volunteer Award was presented to Chris Peskett from The Right to Work CIC. Chris said “The award meant a lot to me and I really enjoyed the day. It was a

fantastic experience to meet the Mayor especially on my birthday!”.

The day started with a buffet lunch hosted by The Mayor. Musical entertainment was provided by young people from “Midnight Parade” at Warblington School.

HAVANT BOROUGH TALKING NEWSPAPER THE CAT & RABBIT RESCUE CENTRE PRESIDENT RECEIVES LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Havant Borough Talking Newspaper’s President, Keith Stoneman, was the unsuspecting recipient of the Mayor of Havant’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the Plaza in Havant recently.

The event, an annual recognition of volunteering in the Borough was hosted jointly by Community First HEH (CFHEH) and the 2014/15 Mayor of Havant, Councillor Marjorie Smallcorn. Some sixty or so volunteers received award certificates, they and their guests were treated to a buffet reception at the Plaza.

Keith was invited to the event to receive a Volunteer Award Certificate but had no idea he was in line for the Lifetime Achievement Award until the end of the ceremony.

A founder member of the Talking News, Jean Dermott, gave an insight into Keith’s history with the organisation. Keith has a variety of charity interests but has been with Havant Borough Talking Newspaper since its inception in 1993 as a reader, interviewer, promoter, recruiter, Chairman and President. He planned and project managed the move to and outfitting of the Talking

News’ present studio in East Street, Havant.

Every fortnight, at this studio, an hour long recording is made of news stories and events in the area. It is delivered, completely free of charge, to around 200 blind or visually impaired residents living in the borough of Havant. Articles are taken from local newspapers such as PO9&PO11 and are broadcast for the listeners’ enjoyment.

Havant Talking News is available on cassette tapes and also on memory sticks, which can be played on RNIB Daisy players or computers. However, if neither is available then memory stick players, especially designed for visually impaired people, are provided. The Talking News warmly welcomes all new listeners and also new volunteers.

As a charity which is run totally by volunteers, they are the lifeblood of the organisation.

There was great excitement down here last week as our new Mum and Baby unit was officially opened. My staff invited Christopher Timothy to open it as he was one of the vets on ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. I expect a lot of you would have watched it as it was on weekly at teatime. Mary Hall was the housekeeper in it, played by the lovely Mary Hignett. Mary’s daughter, Pat O’Leary, kindly donated money to our charity and her legacy provided enough money for us to build the new unit and we will be forever grateful to her. Christopher walked very close to me and I was hoping that someone would say “This is Giggles, our out and about reporter”, but never mind, he may come again. If he does I will run out in front of him and make myself known! Us out and abouters had our annual MOTs last week, and I'm happy to say I heard Mark the vet say that I was toppo. Talking of MOTs, don't forget to take your pets for theirs as it is very important to make sure they are fit and well and that their vaccinations, fleaing and worming are all up to date. This month my special Pet of the Month is Alexa.

Alexa

Meet Alexa. She is a beautiful, long haired female cat. Alexa arrived at the centre with her two kittens on the 2nd October 2014 after being found as a stray in Portsmouth. Her kittens have now been rehomed and one and a half year old Alexa is desperately searching for the forever home that she so deserves. She can be quite shy and nervous and takes a little bit of time to warm up, but once she is comfortable with you she loves a cuddle, a chin tickle and a warm lap to sit on. Alexa will need a quiet home where she can be allowed to come out of her shell in her own time. If you think you can provide Alexa with the loving forever home that she deserves then please do not hesitate to contact us here at the centre.

Four mothers understand about cystic fibrosis, and are determined to raise awareness and funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, inspired by the courage of their own six children living with the condition, and others.

Here are Sue, from Hayling, Sophie from Sarisbury Green, Mary from Horndean, and Sally, who lives in Gosport, but works in Havant. Aged from 30+ to 70+, all 4 believe that one day there will be a better future for the 10,000 people in the UK, and tomorrow’s generations. Only one baby in

about every 2500 is born with this inherited condition, which affects the lungs and digestion, yet there are millions of people who, healthy themselves, unknowingly carry the defective gene.

Sophie has two gorgeous boys, and despite family life revolving around physiotherapy, medications and hospital visits, last year managed 2014 ‘self-propelled miles’ to advertise the Trust’s 50th anniversary. This year, she is running in the London Marathon. To raise sponsorship, she hosted a Virtual 5K, and among others, Mary

(a marathon runner herself) and Sue ( a beginner) walked their 5 K on the Billy Trail on Hayling, and received their medals from Sophie.

Meanwhile, thanks to the much appreciated support of Havant library managers, Julia Nelson-Tomsen, and Jill Welfare, and Pfizer Havant’s Community Fund Scheme , Sue Kruk, secretary of the local Trust branch, recently handed over 6 copies of Tim Wotton’s new book ‘‘How have I cheated death?’’ to Julia and Jill , to help spread the word about cystic fibrosis.

Jenny Agutter writes of Tim’s book ‘For anyone facing any form of life challenge this is a compelling and heartening story’. He is a non-fiction finalist for the UK’s People’s Book Prize and will find out if he’s won his category in May 2015, with the winner’s ceremony being televised.

Tim, Hampshire born and bred, and a skilled hockey player, is now much in demand, as a spokesman for those with CF. There are so few of us, says Sue, and we’re always short on time. People with cystic fibrosis, who can look so well to the outside world, must undergo a horrendous daily regime of treatment, with never a day off. Any help, however small, is always much appreciated, says Sue— borrow Tim’s book, display a poster, share a facebook posting, grow a sunflower, listen to our song, Breathe With Me, or do a Strawfie. Stronger, More Flexible, Pain-Free Readers … tips and exercises from our Award Winning Physio My name is Natalie March from Physio-logical, a chartered physiotherapist in PO9. I am enjoying being back and treating in our Havant clinic after returning from maternity.

My son is slowly getting used to being left at his childminders, he has a great time there.

I hope you found my last exercises for Plantarfaciitis useful. Today I will give you some exercises to help strengthen and stabilise if you have sacro-iliac joint dysfunction (pelvis/hips out of alignment).

Core stability exercises help support your pelvis and back.

A lot of people have weak core muscles.

Core muscles are not your six pack muscles (rectus abdominus) they are deeper muscles (transverses abdominus) which support the pelvis and spine, they aren’t always targeted when people are working out.

It is important to make sure you have good core stability to support you back and pelvis which will help maintain pelvis alignment, reduce pain, prevent the risk of injury and improve posture. The exercises below will teach you how to activate your core stability muscles.

Please note that a lot of people who have pelvis alignment problems often describe not feeling level, one leg feels longer or in the wrong place and complain of stiffness and pain around their hips and/or lower back. The best treatment is hands on manipulation and mobilisation to correct the alignment then core stability exercises to maintain the alignment.

HAVANT BOROUGH SPORTS AWARDS Hockey player, sports fan, and Parliamentary candidate Alan Mak was Guest Speaker at this year's Havant Borough Sports Awards held at Havant Leisure Centre on 26 February 2015.

Local sports clubs honoured included Havant and Waterlooville Swim Club, Havant Hockey Club, Langstone Cutters Gig Club and Hayling Golf Club.

Alan Mak congratulated all the winners, and emphasised the key role sport plays across the Borough in bringing

1. Prep the hair with fixing spray for a smooth texture.

2. Gather your hair at the nape of your neck draping it over your ears and tie with elastic.

A packed church enjoyed a concert organised to give a very public welcome to the newly installed Rector of St.Faith’s, Canon Tom Kennar on 28th February.

Topping the bill was the local Solent Male Voice Choir based in Portsmouth, ably assisted with Flute Solos by Louise Sulley from the Isle of Wight. Canon Kennar himself sang two solos in magnificent style to thunderous applause which perhaps indicates the standard of music that the congregation will have to match in future!

Canon Tom Kennar was installed on 17th February by Rt. Revd Christopher Foster, Bishop of Portsmouth. Canon Kennar moved here from being a team rector in North End, Portsmouth, which included the church, St Nicholas, where the Choir rehearses each Tuesday. He is already known in the area having served in Emsworth but also has links with churches in West Africa where he is Canon of two cathedrals.

Solent Male Voice Choir was formed in 1961 by a group of Portsmouth postmen, based at the Head Post Office. As the choir expanded the name changed in 1974 reflecting the extended membership and concert venues attended. For example, last year they hosted concerts in Hayling Island for a Gloucestershire MVC and on the Isle of Wight for a Cornish MVC. Their growing confidence and competence is such that over the approaching late May Bank Holiday

weekend they have been invited to sing in South Wales at two concerts – including singing in Welsh! In 2016 a performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London is possible.

The Making of Havant Havant historian Ralph Cousins has just reproduced five local history booklets under the title of 'The Making of Havant'.

These were originally published in the 1970s by the Havant Local History Group and have now been updated with many photographs.

Each volume has at least 80-pages and between them they cover over 60 different topics on the history of Havant from the 1850s.

Forest of Bere Bowmen in Horndean is one of the most active archery clubs in the area. Each Spring it runs an open “Have-aGo” afternoon for anyone who wants to try out archery.

Whether you’ve had a go with a bow on holiday or at school, or have always wanted to see what shooting a real bow is like, our Have-a-Go session is a great chance to try archery.

Members of the club will be there to get you started and give you advice, and all of the equipment is provided for you.

And all of this is free-of-charge – it’s an opportunity that you shouldn’t miss out on!

Tertulia Language organises every term Italian & Spanish courses at Denmead Community Centre. The courses are suitable for anyone who loves and enjoys Italian and/or Spanish culture. Our lessons are focused on communication and cultural aspects.

Catherington WI In the summer of last year, Catherington W.I. celebrated its 60th birthday in fine style including a Diamond Anniversary Party in June where we all donned our glad rags and bling. This was closely followed with an outing to Denman College in Oxfordshire (this College is the hub of the National Federation of Woman’s Institutes) and then in September a Birthday Lunch was held where some of our members dressed up in clothes from the 1954 era.

The W.I. as a whole is celebrating its Centenary this year and part of it has entailed passing a Centenary Baton from each group of W.I. to the next across the country through towns and villages. On a very cold evening in January, Catherington W.I. joined in the fun of the baton change with other members from the Southdown Valley Group in Hambledon Village Hall, the baton having arrived earlier in a vintage fire engine. The evening included a fish & chip supper after which the baton was passed on to the Petersfield WI Group to continue its long journey before arriving at the Albert Hall on June 4th for the National W.I. Conference.

Our speaker at the January meeting was a Mr Eric Birbeck MVO who talked about the history of Haslar Hospital which was

founded in the reign of King George 1 and built between 1746 – 1761. Amongst other things that formed part of the history of Haslar was that Haslar played a major part in discovering a cure for scurvy. In 1940 the hospital also set up the country’s first blood bank to treat wounded soldiers from the Second World War. The subject for our February meeting could not have been more different, JaneAnn Rogers from Wickham has been breeding angora goats for about 28 years, she explained about the process of shearing, dyeing and spinning the mohair yarn into the softest garments imaginable.

We looked forward to hearing about ‘Life on a Submarine’ in March; and, ‘Mistresses and how they influenced history’ in April and in June we will make a trip to visit Lacock Village in Wiltshire.

In February, Catherington W.I. sadly lost two of our much loved members, Joan Dennett and Betty Lawes. Both in their nineties, they had lived locally for many years and were very much a part of our village life.

We are a friendly group of over 50 Members, we meet every second Wednesday afternoon at 2.15 p.m. at Catherington Village Hall.

Forest of Bere Bowmen has its own archery field in Horndean where members can shoot whenever they want to, seven days a week. With members aged from 8 to 80+ using traditional Longbows, Recurve bows and Compound bows, the club has its own equipment for beginners to start off with. It has organised shoots every Sunday of the year, as well as more social “Archery Darts” shoots every other Saturday.

What’s on Competitions are held throughout the year, and in winter, when the days are shorter, the club shoots indoors twice a week in Havant.

The club also runs two Beginners Courses each spring – one on Monday evenings and one on Wednesday evenings.

The courses run over a six-week period, and this year they start on Wednesday 29 April and Monday 11 May. If you come along to our Have-a-Go session and decide that you’d like to give archery a proper go, you can sign up for a Beginners course too.

Archery is a great way to get out in the fresh air, use some of your muscles and get some exercise, and meet a wide range of local people who you can enjoy spending your spare time with.

Postcode Publications Community orchard project launched

A community orchard on the Emsworth/Westbourne border was launched on Sunday at a cider-tasting evening.

More than 30 people gathered to launch the project to set up an orchard on new public open space next to the Redlands Grange housing development in Emsworth.

The idea of the project is to help preserve traditional fruit varieties, provide local environmentally-friendly produce and help residents get a bit closer to the earth.

Organisers Greening Westbourne, a local climate change action group, are hoping it will be a joint project to benefit both communities.

The plan is to get trees sponsored by local people – maybe in remembrance of a loved one, or to celebrate a birth.

The event was hosted by the White Horse inn in Westbourne, and included a cider-tasting competition.

Residents are being encouraged to attend the first meeting of an orchard steering group at 7.30pm on 21 April, at the Meeting Place in North Street, Westbourne.

Greening Westbourne chair Colin Carré said: "It was great to meet people interested in the idea, celebrate the launch and have some fun.

We now need to form a team to run the project, get fund-raising and get down to work. Anyone with useful skills is very welcome to join the 'core' team.

"We'd love to hear from anyone who is a good organiser, or who can keep on top of a bit of admin, or who has experience of fund-raising. Maybe they know something about planting trees, or making cider, or have good web skills."

Open Studios at Local Craft Organisation As spring comes around, we all tend to feel creative, want to try different things and discover something new. For those that are seeking some creative inspiration help is at hand.

Making Space, a local craft organisation based in Havant, is a creative hub that has been busy over the last eight years raising it’s profile by running hundreds of craft workshops and hosting artist events. It is also the base for some of the area’s most talented makers.

WAG WALK ON HAYLING ISLAND As every year, there will be a sponsored dog walking event along the Hayling seafront to raise money for The Ark Animal Shelter in Stubbington.

Put an extra wag in your dog’s day and join us on Sunday 17th May at 10.30 am.

The starting point for the 2-mile walk will be at the Coastguard building on the seafront (opposite Bound Lane). We will walk to the Inn on the Beach and then return to the Hayling Island Light Railway Station where refreshments for the dogs and their walkers will be provided.

Don’t have a dog? Not to worry – everyone is welcome and the walk is a perfect opportunity to get out into the sunshine and join the fun. The sponsorship you and your dog raise will help us to care for unwanted, abandoned and all too often mistreated animals which have found a new home in The Ark.

It takes the enormous sum of £3,000 a day to provide a warm kennel, blankets and beds, vital veterinary care and food for dogs, cats, rabbits, goats, and occasionally even pigs. As The Ark is self-supporting, it is totally reliant on fund-raising efforts, so let’s all do our very best.

Tim Randall’s Sports Round-up Football Battle Stations for Hawks at Westleigh Park Tim Randall

Havant Hockey Club Men’s 1st XI Havant Hockey Club Men’s 1st XI will be staying in the England Hockey League South Premier Division 1 next season. The realisation finally came home after a disappointing 1-3 defeat against Old Georgians at Havant College on 28 March.

Old Georgians knew that to gain the only promotion place available, rivals Sevenoaks would need to lose their final game the next day away to Old Cranleighans. They were to be disappointed. Sevenoaks won the game 2-0. The race was over and Sevenoaks had finally won the season long three team race against Old Georgians and Havant for promotion to the National League.

After the match I spoke to Havant 1st XI Coach Ady Adams about the prospects for next season. Faced with the knowledge that only one team is promoted from the Regional League South Premier Division One. I asked Adams how he saw the Club’s prospects for promotion back to the National league. He said ‘The squad we have had this season has shown the quality needed for promotion. This is evident from our position in the league and our points tally. At this club we rely to an extent on our talented young players.

The difficulty this can bring is retaining them. Sometimes just as they are reaching their best, it coincides with starting university. Logistically that often means they are unable to continue playing for Havant. There is not much we can do about that, but we will continue bringing young players through on the present lines of putting a team together with a mixture of young and experienced players. Overall, I am generally happy with the squad; I would just like to add one or two experienced top quality players to

compliment what I have. Once the dust has settled on the current campaign we will take stock and set about building a league winning squad for next year.’

Report from Junior Captain A thriving junior section is important to Havant Hockey Club. Junior Captain Peter Symonds talking about the section to Postcode said ‘Across the Junior section this season we have again seen a growth in numbers overall to a total membership of some 220. Our key aim is to grow our sport and provide an environment where the children can enjoy their sport in a safe and stimulating way. Teams range from the Minis section (under 8 & under 10) up to under 16 level with matches most Sundays across a range of County and national competitions. We currently have two teams in regional finals and already one team through to a County final with another semi-final game still to be played.

‘We saw success at the recent annual Havant Borough Sports Awards with two winners. The Junior Sportsman award went to Tomek Bruml (pictured below receiving his award from the Mayor of Havant) for his selection to England under 16s (the third year running a club member has won this) and the youth team of the year went to the boys under 16s for reaching their national finals last year.’

Havant & Waterlooville FC are in a race for promotion from Vanarama Conference South. Races have winners. In this race the winners go into the Vanarama Conference Premier. The Vanarama Conference Premier is one step from membership of the Football League. For the players, manager, coaches, officials and supporters it’s a case of what if? Always dream big. Each game now is big. Hawks supporters will turn up at Westleigh Park in their droves.

Seven teams are in the hunt. Just two games are left for Hawks. They go to Hampshire promotion rivals Basingstoke on 18 April. Then the final league game. It is against east Brighton club Whitehawk Athletic, also in the race. Whitehawk come to Westleigh Park for a show down on 25 April. After that, the four teams immediately below the league champions will be in the play-offs. The winners take the remaining promotion place.

Tennis Andy Murray is seeking a second coach to work alongside Amelie Mauresmo. This follows his dismissal of Dani Vallverdu in November 2014 as reported in this column. Sweden’s Jonas Bjorkman has emerged as a favourite for the position. He would like the job and will shortly be joining Murray’s team for a trial week. Bjorkman said on Instagram that he is “…excited and really looking forward to joining [up with] Andy”.

Murray lost in the final of the Miami Open Tournament on 5 April in three sets to arch rival Novak Djokovic. Murray’s defeat against Djokovic was the seventh defeat in a row. His last two defeats to

Djokovic saw Murray collapse to 0 – 6 in each final set. Technically Murray is as good as anybody and possibly better than Djokovic. To turn the tide Murray and his coaching staff will need to focus on his tactics. The challenge for Murray is to shorten rallies and win points sooner, preserving energy for the long game.

Murray has now returned to Europe.

Cycling – CTC Portsmouth The CTC cycling group organises rides around the Havant area. Recently we had a ride along the Salterns Way from Chichester to the Witterings. The ride was organised over two consecutive weeks in different directions.

For much of its route the Salterns Way from Chichester runs along safe and carfree paths, making it good for cycling.

Other parts of the route follow quiet lanes where there is little traffic. The route is extremely flat, ideal for easy cycling.

The Salterns Way runs quite close to Chichester Harbour. However, only a few stretches provide harbour-side views.

Perhaps the loveliest part lies between Apuldram and Birdham Pool. Pretty views extend across the fields. A pleasant cut through Salterns Copse gives way to a loop around Chichester Yacht Basin.

We paused at Chichester Yacht basin for coffee. Refreshed, we continued across the fields on specially designated cycling routes before ending up at Bracklesham Bay. There we enjoyed a well-earned lunch.

The return ride was a little muddy. Not a problem as it was soon washed off when the bicycles got home.

The following week we followed the route in the direction of Goodwood. We took coffee at Goodwood aerodrome, in the café at the old control tower.

This time the ride was more on the country roads. Drier and cleaner.

Within the group we had a couple of punctures, but as usual expert help was given. The wheels repaired. Bicycles and riders were accompanied back to the others who had ridden gently on, enjoying the countryside until we were all back together again.

The total distance ridden each week was about 50 miles, but obviously anyone who didn’t fancy this distance turned back in a small accompanied group after the coffee break.

NB: Portsmouth Cyclists' Touring Club is one of 250 local membership groups across the UK. Together they form the national Cyclists' Touring Club. Portsmouth CTC has some 200 active members from a wide area including Havant, Waterlooville and Emsworth. Portsmouth CTC has four rides per week in the summer and three in the winter. Sunday rides start from Cosham Library at 09.15 and cover 60 miles plus at a fairly swift pace. Wednesday and Saturday rides start from The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre, East Street, Havant at 09.15. They are more leisurely. Potential new members are welcome to join a ride-out.

Havant Rugby Club Havant Rugby Club were beaten 12 – 13

by Guildford RC in the London One South league on 28 March. It was their fourth defeat in six games. After the Guildford game Coach Will Knight reflected on the disappointment of a slow start to the season. He put that down to problems in getting the squad assembled. Once the full squad was available the team has had the strength in depth needed to compete in the league. With just two league games left, Knight expects Havant to finish in the top six. James Read has now returned to America, giving his replacement, George Sutton, the chance to play in the remaining games.

At the time of going to press, Havant’s final London One South games of the season were against Cobham RC at Hooks Lane on 11 April and away to Chobham RC on 18 April. The result at Chobham could decide whether Chobham RC, currently second in the league, are promoted.

Havant’s last match of the season is the Hampshire Cup Final. The Final will be

played on 25 April at Gosport Park at 3.00pm. Their opponents are Gosport & Fareham RC, also of the London One South league.

Hampshire Cup Gosport & Fareham have home advantage, but Havant start as slight semi-final 2014-15 favourites, by virtue of their league position.

Coach Will Knight will then turn his attention to next season. Next season will be significant. There are plans for a major shake-up of the leagues for 2016/17. The shake-up will based on league finishing positions at the conclusion of the 2015/16 season.

America’s Cup Sailing - Ben Ainslie Racing - A New Era The America’s Cup ushered in a new era this month. There has been a transition to a smaller class of boat. A rule change to introduce a new class of boat was passed by the America’s Cup Competitor Forum. This Forum comprises the six teams currently entered in the America’s Cup. It includes the British team, Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR). BAR has a design team of some 20 people working on its America’s Cup boat’s design. at its base in Portsmouth Harbour.

The new class rules have already been published, and the BAR team has already examined the new rules looking for design, technology and innovation opportunities.

The new boats will be able to achieve speeds of close to 50 miles an hour, far faster than any other current racing series in global sailing, and a match for the 72 foot boats that raced so spectacularly at the 34th America’s Cup in San Francisco in 2013.

The America’s Cup spectacle comes to Portsmouth in July this year. The Regatta for the newly approved boats will be held in the Solent off of Southsea seafront from Thursday 23rd - Sunday 26th July 2015. Up to 500,000 visitors are expected to attend.

The four day sporting and entertainment spectacular will provide awe-inspiring opportunities to watch the world’s best sailors battling it out in the new high speed AC45 foiling catamarans. The spectator

experience will cater for all tastes with both free-to-view and paid ticket options.

Postcode Publications MARTIN’S RADIO STATION IS NO FLASH IN THE PAN! Radio listeners in the Havant area had a pleasant surprise when they tuned in their FM radios w/c Sunday 8 March 2015. This new station was The Flash FM, 87.9 Mhz, a special station broadcasting from a portakabin next to The Curlew pub, near the town centre of Havant for a one week trial period. Local community station Angel FM started this way some years ago.

I caught up with station manager Martin Kirby (see pic) during his trial week and asked him what The Flash FM was all about. Martin told me all about his frustration in not being able to hear classic rock albums on the radio and how commercial stations only play top 40 “boy band” tracks. His vision is for The Flash to achieve a community radio station licence and to become a permanent feature of local FM broadcasting scene in Havant. Martin started listening to Radio Caroline and

other offshore pirate stations in the 1980’s as they played album based rock music. He wanted to get more involved so started his own land based pirate station, Freesound International which broadcast on Sundays from his home in South Hampshire on the 48 meter shortwave band.

Martin then teamed up with local radio legend Tony Smith who founded Angel FM which was to become one of Britain’s first licenced community stations. Angel began as a pirate and then had a number of RSL broadcasts before it eventually became a fully licensed community station. Angel FM, which targets older listeners with pre 1959 music, broadcasts from Havant on 101.0 FM and on DAB Digital Radio (South Hants 11C DAB). Martin then moved on and started The Flash as an internet station in 2012, playing classic rock albums, based in his own home in the Havant area. In 2013

he had his first RSL licence and broadcast for a week from the Churchillian pub, Portsdown Hill, overlooking Portsmouth. This broadcast was a great success raising much awareness of the station.

In December 2014, The Flash moved to its own premises, a portakabin next to The Curlew pub in Havant. The portakabin contains a full radio studio with mixing desk, CD players, record library, PCs and all you need to broadcast.

The Oaks Donate £4,487 to Rowans Hospice The Oaks, Havant Crematorium is donating £4,487 to The Rowans Hospice as part of its open day on Saturday 25 April, the result of a share of funds from a national recycling scheme to which the crematorium belongs.

Recycling of metals following cremation is only done with the written consent of each bereaved family. This metal is recycled by ICCM (Independent Community Care

Management Ltd) and the proceeds are shared between its members to donate to charity.

The Oaks open day on Saturday 25 April from 10am-2pm, is intended to demystify and dispel any myths about cremation and also give visitors the opportunity to tour the extensive grounds and find out about the conservation work undertaken in partnership with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust.

The Rowans Hospice, said: “The Rowans Hospice is delighted to have been nominated by The Oaks to receive the significant donation - the equivalent of supporting nine patients requiring in-patient care at The Rowans Hospice.

The Oaks donated £3473 to Rowan’s Hospice last year and £3,333 to Naomi House Children’s Hospice from the same ICCM scheme.

New Justice of the Peace Rotary Club of Havant Local man Edward Rees is appointed as one of the UK’s Youngest ever Magistrates

Edward Rees, 22, took his oath of office recently to become one of the UK’s youngest ever Justices of the Peace.

Winchester Crown Court saw Edward sworn in by H.H Judge Benett and Hampshire’s Vice Lord-Lieutenant Lindsay Fox at a ceremony attended by his family and fellow Magistrates Edward who grew up in the Bedhampton/Leigh Park area said: ‘’It’s a real honour to serve as a Magistrate. We should all try to give something back. I am proud of my working class roots, I went to Warblington School, Havant College and the University of Portsmouth. I am so passionate about local issues and it is a privilege to serve our community. I hope my appointment will inspire other young people to come forward and be actively involved in our community. There is a lot of responsibility with the role, I have the ability to take someone’s liberty away. However, I look forward to getting to work and I am ready to dispense justice and uphold the law’’

Edward had to undergo a rigorous three year selection and training process to be put forward to the Lord Chancellor as a suitable candidate for Justice of the Peace, beating individuals who were 40 years his senior in the process. His first sitting on the bench will be in the middle of April.

Drive to Attract New Members Four new members –the most ever at one time- have been welcomed into Havant Rotary The new faces are married couple Shelagh & Stuart Moore from Cowplain ,plus Vicki King and Nigel Tailyour both of whom live in Emsworth.

All four bring a great deal of professional experience to the club particularly in the areas of IT, education, health, and fundraising.

The club is actively seeking new members and part of this was the recent “Get To Know You” breakfast held at the Brookfield Hotel in Emsworth. This no obligation event was aimed at men and women of all ages who would enjoy the friendship of fellow members and very active social programme, whilst utilizing their business/ professional skills and experience to helping others. 14 guests took up the invitation with Shelagh, Stewart,Vicki and Nigel being the first to be inducted into full membership.

A second breakfast meeting and presentation will be held later this year.

The club now has over 50 members with several more candidates in the

The charity was established in memory of Hannah Westbrook from Waterlooville who passed away aged 10, and these homes have been purchased to give families valuable time away from it all or if they have lost someone very special.

Over 400 balloons were released together to provide a colourful aerial display and during that weekend the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth displayed colours of the rainbow in memory of Hannah’s 21st Birthday.

Over 130 students from all year groups are said to be elated after grabbing 1st place at Rock Challenge earlier this month. On Wednesday 24th March, Park students rocked Portsmouth’s Guildhall. Not only did they walk away with 1st prize, they also won awards for Choreography, Drama Skills, Lighting Design, Most Entertaining, Best Performance Skills and Best Concept. Performing their 8-minute dance ‘Narration of Creation’, they will be returning to Portsmouth’s Guildhall for this year’s Rock Challenge Finals. “They are buzzing from the whole experience.” commented Ms Dare, Head of Performing Arts.

In February, Park students met The Duchess of Cambridge and Olympian Sir Ben Ainslie while painting a mural of the Solent at Camber Dock in Old Portsmouth.

Led by art teacher Mr Waterfield, students from six schools in the area have been painting the hoarding outside the construction site of the new America’s Cup yacht racing facility. Students were showing off their creative skills and learning new artistic techniques, guided by three street artists, the 1851 Trust and Strong Island.

Filmed by BBC South Today, Sir Ben posed for photographs with our students. Mr Waterfield said, the students, “...were fantastic ambassadors for the school.”

CRAFT BEERS - Enjoy your local brews PORTERS AND OTHER STOUT FELLOWS

Probably the best known beer brand in the UK is Guinness and it is the one beer than you can obtain in virtually every pub, club, off licence and supermarket. However it is a beer that has that “marmite” quality in that people tend to either really like it or intensely dislike it. It certainly has a very distinctive burnt, bitter taste that is not to everyone’s liking. It is a pity because Guinness is only one example of the family of dark beers known as stouts and porters.

These beers first started to be brewed in C18 London and by tradition they were popular with porters at the various London markets – hence the name porter. When stronger versions of porter were first brewed they became known as stout porters and eventually the name stout stuck. In Dublin, Arthur Guinness began brewing stout in 1759 on an industrial scale with much of his output being exported.

These export stouts were stronger in alcohol and more heavily hopped to ensure that they travelled well. They became known as Foreign Extra stouts and developed a strong following, particularly in West Africa and the Caribbean. In England porters continued to be brewed and in recent years there has been a revival of interest in this style of beer which is sweeter and less bitter that the Irish stouts.

Back in the 1960’s one of the biggest selling brands of beer was Mackeson which was a sweet stout, sometimes known as a milk stout. This brand is still available but is

increasingly hard to find. Other variations of the stout/porter family include Oatmeal stout (brewed with oatmeal and barley), Oyster stout (which was once brewed with the addition of oysters) and Imperial Stout which is a very strong brew (7% -13%) best sampled in small quantities at the end of a meal.

I am very fond of dark beers and have recently been around some of our local supermarkets and off licences trying out different types of stouts and porters. Here

are a few of my recommendations which should appeal to Guinness lovers as well as those of you who are not necessarily fans of very bitter beers. These beers should be drunk at around 10°-12° C and go well with grilled meats and roasts. Expect to pay from £2 -£2.50 for a 500 ml bottle of craft beer.

Hepworth Conqueror Sussex Stout. (4.5%) 500 ml - Brewed in Horsham, West Sussex.

This beer has a liquorice aroma and is sweeter and less bitter than an Irish stout.

Fullers London Porter (5.4%) 500 ml - Brewed by Fullers in London This beer was first brewed in 1996 but is based on an old recipe. It has a coffee aroma with chocolate, vanilla and coffee tastes coming through. This beer has won various awards and was one of CAMRA’s beers of the year in 2014.

Hopback Brewery Entire Stout (4.5%) 500 ml - Brewed in Salisbury This is a bottle conditioned “real ale” and can also be found on draught. It has been produced since 2001 and has a smoky autumnal aroma. On tasting there are chocolate, coffee and caramel undertones.

Meantime London Stout (4.5%) 500 ml - Brewed in London since 2008 This beer contains no roast barley and is softer in flavour than many other stouts.

This beer has tastes of coffee, caramel and vanilla. It might be the beer to convince someone who does not like Guinness that all stouts are not the same.

Meantime Chocolate Porter (6.5%) 330 ml - This is a Baltic style Porter with a full bodied taste. Chocolate is added at the maturation stage.

This is a complex beer well suited for drinking with cheese or it could go with a very rich beef casserole.

When shopping for beers do look out for products from local breweries and don’t be afraid to try something different for a change. I never cease to be amazed at the tremendous choice of beers available locally, yet so many people pile their trollies high with cases of bland, fizzy lagers.
