Both Grainger plc and Careys have maintained their commitment to developing a sustainable community at Berewood and continue to carry out their social responsibilities at the site.

Public footpaths straddle the development and there is a temptation for local children to leave the footpaths and explore the surroundings, and this poses a challenge for the on-site teams. It was considered by all that machinery and site activity could potentially be a cause of great interest and possible danger to the children who attend local schools, including Berewood Primary School... Waterlooville Music Festival celebrates its tenth year as the largest cultural event in Waterlooville, and one of the premier annual music festivals in Hampshire. It is a week long musical extravaganza, offering a wide range of musical genres and attracting musicians from right across the county and beyond. This year the Festival coincides with Waterloo 200, the anniversary celebrations of the birth of Waterlooville town, marking the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

The aim of Waterlooville Music Festival is to bring music to St George’s Church and the centre of Waterlooville for the whole community to enjoy.

The Festival opens with Market Place Music, numerous concerts taking place throughout Waterlooville Town Centre in a massive musical celebration. All day time concerts are free, and include opportunities for local schools to show the talent of their choirs and instrumentalists. Schools workshops also take place, and this year we plan a Recorder Workshop and a Ukulele Workshop. In addition to schools, there is a Clarinet and Piano Concert, an Organ Recital, Jazz, and the Palm Court Tea Dance with cream teas and the civilised background music of the Pianoforte. The

wide range of music on offer includes a rock concert on the final Saturday.

Evening concerts focus on presenting amateur performers who are of professional standard, but the week opens with a very special anniversary event as we proudly present The Royal Marines Association Concert Band. Their usual appearances are at huge venues such as Portsmouth Guildhall and having them perform at the music festival will be an amazing event. By popular demand we have the return of Out of the Shadows - the Sixties party night that was such a fantastic evening last year; the Folk and Ale evening will be headed up by the hugely talented Revel, Weird and Wild; and we are delighted to welcome back the always immensely entertaining Hampshire Guitar Orchestra.

The climax of the week long festival is on the final Saturday night, when Last Night of the Proms brings all the pomp, ceremony, atmosphere and flag waving of the real thing!

Therefore, a meeting was arranged between Careys and Sue Patrick, Head teacher at Berewood Primary School, regarding the site and its potential appeal for the children who live locally. It was felt that some of the children, based on previous experiences, may not be able to resist the urge to visit it during the Christmas holidays, when the site was closed and unattended.

Following the meeting it was subsequently agreed that Careys, in

conjunction with Grainger, would visit the school on Monday 15th December, prior to the start of the Christmas holidays, to speak to the children about safety. The children were divided into two groups to be shown a detailed video explaining the dangers and potential hazards associated with a building site.

Sid Chattaway, Carey Site Safety Advisor, comments, “The safety video was received with great enthusiasm by the children, and Mrs. Patrick was satisfied that the messages of danger and avoidance would be heeded by the children during the festive period and in the future.”

Woodcroft Primary School Raise Funds On Tuesday 16th December, Woodcroft Primary School, Lovedean, Waterlooville held their first ever Christmas Fair and it was a huge success! In the main school hall were lots of activity stalls such as 'Pin the nose on Olaf' and 'Rudolph' Carrots' as well as a craft stall where children could decorate their own bauble to take home.

We also had more traditional stalls such as tombolas and lucky dip along with an amazing raffle where thanks to our sponsors Beals Estate Agents, our main prize was an XBOX 360! Children could also meet Santa in his decorated grotto, chat about what presents they were hoping he would bring them on Christmas eve and how many carrots they would leave out for the reindeer's. A group of children had been practising the famous Frozen song 'Let it Go' and sang at the end of the fair along with Elsa (from Prestige Princess Parties) who popped along to the fair to say Hi to the children and sing with them which was fantastic.

We raised a staggering £850 so a huge thank you to all the staff, parents and children who supported us.

Swain & Co Solicitors Legal Aid You may have heard about a legal challenge brought by the campaign group Rights of Women regarding the domestic abuse evidence that needs to be provided to be able to get legal aid for family matters.

They sought to challenge the lawfulness of the Government’s new rules, mainly based on the fact that it was limiting victims of

abuse accessing legal aid.

Unfortunately, their case was not successful and the Court did not consider that it was unlawful.

Whilst this is not great news, we need to be practical about the situation we are in and look at what we can do rather than what we can’t.

Citizens Advice Warns of Rogue Callers The numbers of nuisance and scam phone calls in the East Hampshire and Havant area have seen an increase recently.

Some rogue callers are claiming to be getting information from Citizens Advice.

Typically they are offering debt and financial help to individuals in an effort to gain personal and banking details. Citizens Advice will not call you to ask for personal information.

Jon Stuart, CEO of Havant and East Hampshire CAB said”Citizens Advice would never pass information about a client to another organisation without permission.

Confidentiality is a cornerstone of our organisation, and we take great efforts to protect client information.” CAB would like reassure and emphasize to the public that unless you have given specific permission to CAB to act as an

intermediary, no information on any subject will be shared.

Please contact your local bureaux if you have been approached by anyone asking for bank and personal details claiming to be sent from Citizens Advice, or report it to Action Fraud on 0300123 2040 or on www.actionfraud.police.uk Citizens Advice has a dedicated Consumer helpline 03454 040506 for all consumer issues including practical advice for anyone who thinks they could be a victim of a scam or want to report a crime.

The website, www.adviceguide.org.uk, gives general consumer information and describes the many types of scams in operation. The site is a useful reference point for any consumer concerns.

Residents warned of Council Tax scammers It has been brought to the attention of Havant Borough Council that residents in the borough are receiving doorstop visits by someone claiming to be from the council informing them their Council Tax banding is incorrect.

The cold caller states they are from Havant Borough Council, showing some form of ID Badge and states they could be paying too much Council Tax and their property is incorrectly banded.

Havant Borough Council does NOT

undertake any kind of door-to-door cold calling regarding Council Tax banding.

Anyone who receives a visit should not: • Not invite this person into their home • Not engage in conversation • Notify Hampshire County Council, Trading Standards and the police.

Pensions on divorce – what are you entitled to?

When people separate, they are often overwhelmed by so many decisions that they have to make. Where will we live?

Who will look after the children? Who is going to sort out the debts? So often, the day to day problems take precedence.

These decisions are important, but something that can often be overlooked is pensions.

Pensions are complicated, and people often don’t even know if they have one, let alone if their (former) partner has one.

And even if someone knows they do have a pension, how do you know its value or even what the numbers mean?

Pensions often do not become of particular interest until you’re approaching retirement but for a pension to provide an income it needs to be set up and paid in to for a substantial number of years first.

So, even a small pension now (if you’re, say, aged between 30-50 years old) may have some considerable value upon retirement.

So what are the things to consider?

Here are a few questions consider if you are separating and maybe have not considered your financial position yet: 1. Have you or your (former) partner ever paid into a pension?

2. Have you or your (former) partner ever had an employee pension through work? a.

In particular, have either of you ever worked in the public sector (armed forces, emergency services, civil

service, teaching)? If so, it’s likely there is a pension pot somewhere?

3. Do you know what your state pension entitlement is?

What next? See what information can be gathered about the pension(s). Most companies send out a statement every now and again. Or have a look through old employment records or paperwork which may have details of any scheme you have paid in to. Lastly, get a state pension forecast to see what you’re entitled to.

You can do this here: https://www.gov.uk/state-pensionstatement The more information available, the better; the next steps are to then take some advice. For pensions to be divided or changed, the pension company require a court order. Pensions also need to be looked at as part of the overall picture of a financial settlement and cannot be considered in isolation.

So, although there are lots more pressing matters to look at on separation, a pension is for future security and cannot be ignored. It’s complicated and sometimes confusing, but we can help with this and explain the options available in plain English.

Also, don’t forget, it is often possible to reach an out of court agreement and we will do everything we can to help you reach a settlement without having to attend Court.

ENJOY YOUR RADIO Despite the competition from the Internet, mobile phones, tablets, computer games, television, etc. radio is still a very popular form of entertainment and information. According to Radio Joint Audience Research (RAJAR) some 89% of all adults listen to the radio at least once a week. There are well over 100 million radios in the UK -that is almost 2 radios for every adult.

Public radio broadcasting started in the UK in 1922 and we have all grown up with

radio being part of the soundtrack to our lives. The radio is on in the kitchen (but increasingly being replaced by the TV), it plays as we drive our cars and is often heard when we go into shops. Builders love their radios to keep them company as they work in difficult and dirty conditions.

However radio is under threat, not just from other forms of entertainment but from successive governments who have threatened to close down FM broadcasts and force people to buy DAB radios. DAB broadcasts started in the UK back in 1995 but only 24.5% of people listen on DAB. FM (VHF) and AM (Medium Wave) broadcasts still account for 56.4% of all listeners. FM broadcasts began in the UK in 1955 and provides far better audio quality than the DAB broadcasts. In fact DAB itself is likely to be replaced by DAB+, a new format which is supposed to be better than the original DAB. I have been a radio fan all of my life and believe that radio is the premier media in that it can be accessed anywhere, is easy to use, offers great variety and is very affordable. In order to get more out of radio here are a few suggestions that you may want to explore: 1. Get an aerial. Most of us will have some sort of Hi-Fi system which includes a radio tuner. In order to get the best possible stereo sound it is essential to have an external (or loft mounted) aerial. Regardless of whether you have an FM tuner or a DAB tuner, an outside aerial is a must to bring in a full range of stations in stereo. In the Havant area with an outside FM aerial one can listen to: Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio 3, Radio 4, BBC Radio Solent, Spirit FM, Heart

FM, Classic FM, Capital FM, Wave FM, Jack FM, Breeze FM.(all in full stereo) Angel Radio Havant (Community), Express FM (Community), Isle of Wight Radio and BBC Radio Sussex (excellent mono signal) Listen to radio via your TV. If your TV is close to your Hi-fi and you don’t have a radio tuner or wish to install an aerial then you can connect your TV audio output to the audio input socket of your hi-fi amplifier. I have recently connected a TV to my stereo system by using a Digital Coaxial SPDIF cable (about £4 on the internet). This gives FM quality stereo radio sound without the need to buy a separate tuner and aerial. It also dramatically improves the TV sound without the need to buy a clumsy and expensive Soundbar. If your Hi-Fi amplifier does not have a digital coaxial input socket you may need to purchase a digital to analogue converter (from £12 via various internet suppliers) and connect this device to your amp using phonoplugs. Freeview, Freesat or Sky Radio do not provide all the local stations obtainable on FM (or DAB) but will give you all the BBC National stations plus some national commercial stations (mainly pop music) Currently 5% of all radio listening is done via the TV. Do a quick check of all the radios you have in your home. Do they all work, do they have batteries installed or mains leads plugged in? If not get them going and put one in each room that you use regularly. That way you can enjoy radio wherever you are in the house.

If your radios are all rather old and give poor performance why not treat yourself to a new radio. If you are unsure what to buy try visiting a local specialist such as O’Reilly & Son in Market Parade, Havant who stock a large range of DAB and FM radios.

Expect to pay from £40 -£200 for a FM/DAB portable radio. I can also recommend the publication “Radio Listeners Guide 2015” which has indepth reviews of over 30 new radios and detailed listings of well over 100 radios. 6. Do tune around and enjoy the diversity of radio today. It is very easy to leave your radio tuned to one station and never try listening to anything else. We would not want to watch just one TV channel so why stick to one radio station? Here is Havant we are fortunate in having Angel Radio (101.1 FM and DAB). This was one of the first community stations in the UK and has a unique blend of programming presented by

and aimed at older listeners. If you enjoy classical music then both Classic FM (100.3 FM) and Radio 3 (90.7 FM) offer 24 hour quality music. If you tire of the bland pop music format of many commercial stations then BBC Radio 6 (DAB only) may offer something different. My personal favourite is Radio 4 which offers a great blend of comedy and documentaries as well as news and current affairs.

‘An Ideal Husband’

must admit that I was not expecting to enjoy the performance of ‘An Ideal Husband’ when I visited Chichester Festival Theatre on 2nd December.

However, I was rewarded with an excellent night’s entertainment that not only completely exceeded my expectations but left me feeling disappointed it was over so soon.

‘An Ideal Husband’ is an 1895 comedic stage play by Oscar Wilde. It follows the marriage of Lady Chiltern and Sir Robert; with Sir Robert playing the title role. It is a story of blackmail and political corruption surrounding Lady Cheveley, Sir Robert, Lady Chilton and Lord Goring. The play took place in a contemporary London setting and is set over a twenty-four hour period.

Notwithstanding the serious thread of blackmail and intrigue running through the play, it was awash with humour.

Despite being aimed at an adult audience and being written almost one hundred and twenty years ago, the show still remained fresh and had jokes that I understood and found funny.

The plot was engaging and maintained my interest with numerous plots twists embedded throughout. The actors

played their parts exceedingly well, with my favourites characters being Lord Goring, played by Jamie Glover, and Lady Markby, played by Patricia Routeledge.

Lord Goring was self-assured, witty and had by far the funniest lines. I saw him as the “class clown” with his self-deprecating jokes and always thinking that he talked a load of nonsense. He was admired among the ladies in the play for his witty sense of humour, his good looks and suave dress.

However, in my opinion Lady Cheveley was the main character of the play.

She first appears in the opening scene, accompanying Lady Markby to Lady Chilton’s party. You seem to know from the start that she’s bad news but you cannot put your finger on why. As the play progresses you see that she decides to wreak havoc in Sir Robert’s life by threatening to expose his past exploits in the political world, which would ruin his career, if he does not support one of her projects.

Overall, I found this to be an enjoyable play, one that exceeded my expectations dramatically and left me wondering what else I had been missing out on. With an engaging plot, funny characters and beautiful scenery, what is not to like about ‘An Ideal husband’?

PAUL SAYS SMILES ARE FREE AND ALE IS REAL The Crown Hotel in Emsworth is a nine bedroomed Grade II 16TH Century listed building located right in the heart of this pretty village.

We visited this establishment one very cold but fully moonlit night and received a very warm welcome from Paul and Veronica - we chose a table in the main bar area mainly because it was so warm and inviting.

Their winter menu is very comprehensive indeed with many traditional favourites but also a few from around the world plus a substantial fish section. The wide choice of dishes provided us with a good debate – my wife finally selected the soup of the day – Broccoli and Stilton, followed by Chicken Souvlaki - grilled skewers of chicken breast on a bed of Greek salad with tzatziki and houmous dips and pita bread whilst I finally went for Baked Camembert followed by one of my alltime favourite dishes of sautéed calves liver and bacon with mashed potatoes, onion gravy and seasonal vegetable topped with parsnip crisps! The portions were really well proportioned and very tasty indeed. Paul told us that they source all their meat fish and vegetable from local suppliers.

We were really well satisfied by the time the sweet menu was presented to us – Paul convinced us that we should at least share the “weekly crumble”. A large bowl of steaming hot apple and sultana crumble and custard arrived – a fitting end to a very enjoyable supper.

I would heartily recommend a visit to enjoy the ambience of this fine hostelry and sample some excellent food. I can also recommend the speciality of the house to you –

“International Gourmet Burgers” – I witnessed another customer’s order and thought “perhaps I should come back and give that a try at another lunch or supper time”.

Food and Wine New Zealand Wines More than just Sauvignon Blanc Jonathan Rogers from The Solent Wine Experience looks at this growing wine producing country.

The rise of New Zealand wines has been all to evident over the last few years.

Known for its grassy, perfumed Sauvignon Blanc, producers concentrate on quality wines as opposed to half price, BOGOF deals. The average cost of a bottle of New Zealand wine here in the UK is £7.27 which is up 14% on last year and we import over 51,000 litres. We are second only to Australia who import 53,000 lts and the US, 48,000 lts.

The next highest is Canada importing 7,000 lts so its a huge gap between the top three and fourth place.

As a country we have fallen in love with Sauvignon Blanc. Its crisp, perfumed, grassy dryness has captured our hearts and every wine shop and supermarket you go to has an abundance of various types from various producers. It is the most widely planted grape variety in the country by far (22,000 hectares) with most of it coming from Marlborough on the north island. The highest producing region in the country, it accounts for over half of all wine produced.

But its not just Sauvignon Blanc that New Zealand can produce well. If you visit the independent wine merchants as opposed to the high street chains or supermarkets, you will find some classic little gems from other varieties and other regions, proving that spending a few pounds more is the difference between a good bottle of wine and 'drool over' , life changing bottle of wine.

Otiake Estate is one producer concentrating on these 'other' varieties. A small vineyard consisting of three separate blocks of vines making up 11.5 hectares only, it was established in 2008. It is already making a name for its self in New Zealand and Australia. Based in the Waitaki Valley in Otago on the South Island, it has similar soil and climate to the Alsace region in France

and grows the likes of Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer, which are all the typical varieties grown in the Alsace.

Check these two and remember, there is a whole world of wine out there, it needs exploring.

Roasted Pepper and Tomato Soup I am pleased to share this healthy, tasty soup recipe which is very simple to make but also great if you are looking for a low calorie option. I know that many of you are always looking for new recipe ideas which are a little bit different and gluten free. This soup is started in the oven so the flavours are intensified and then finished off on the hob. If you want to make a hearty version, add a cup of cooked mixed pulses this provides wonderful texture but also added protein and fibre- a meal in itself.You can even spice it up by adding 2 to 3 chopped chillies- really delicious too. I am sure you will enjoy this versatile recipe. Apart from teaching cookery courses Food Fiend Experience provides group dining experiences, for more information please go to: www.foodfiendexp.com Ingredients 0.75 l vegetable or chicken stock 2 small carrots, chopped 2 sticks celery, chopped 1 large red onion, chopped 4 large garlic cloves 4 red/ orange peppers 1 tin of chopped tomatoes Large handful of fresh basil leaves Salt and pepper ¼ tube of tomato paste Optional: 100 gms mixed dried pulses which have been pre cooked, 2-3 red finely chopped red chillies Method 1. Cut the pepper in half. Remove the stalk and seeds and cut into eighths. Place them on a baking tray and drizzle with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper and place them into the oven for 20 – 25 mins at 200 degrees or until the skins just start to look charred.

2. Peel and cut onion into 1/8ths.

Remove outer leaves of garlic cloves but do not remove skin.

Throw into roasting pan with roasted peppers. Add to peppers after 10 minutes.

3. Roughly chop carrots and celery into 1 cm cubes add to peppers and cook for 15 minutes.

4. Make up stock and add tinned tomatoes bring to a boil add roasted peppers and onion and peeled garlic and simmer for 5 minutes.

5. Remove from the heat and add the fresh basil. Whizz everything together with a hand held blender, taste and check for seasoning.

6. Enjoy with a dollop of crème fraiche and basil leaf for garnish.

Postcode Publications UNIVERSITY OF CHICHESTER ACADEMIES START 2015 WITH FIZZ The New Year fired up with fizz as teaching staff from the University of Chichester Academy Trust’s five primary phase academies got together at Berewood Primary School in Waterlooville on Monday, 5th January for a Trust-wide INSET day, with a stimulating range of workshops led by staff from the University’s Institute of Education.

130 teachers, teaching assistants and leadership teams from host school Berewood Primary, The Flying Bull Academy, Frogmore Junior School, Kingsham Primary School and Fernhurst Primary School were welcomed by the University of Chichester Academy Trust (CAT) Chief Executive Officer, Sue Samson and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Chichester, Professor Clive Behagg. In his opening comments Professor Behagg highlighted the connection between the work of CAT and the University’s deep-rooted desire to raise individual and community aspirations and enable economic regeneration through education.

A wide range of activities ran during the day with a focus on the primary curriculum. University workshop leaders introduced strategies for the

CAT academy teaching staff explore the new primary Science curriculum

effective teaching of Grammar and Punctuation, Phonics and Spelling and Developing Confident Mathematicians. Further sessions explored the teaching of Science and History in the new National Curriculum and there were options on Dialogic Teaching, Understanding Working Memory and supporting children in building healthy relationships, as well as a session specifically for teaching assistants on improving pupil metacognition skills through dialogue.

CAT Chief Executive Sue Samson said, “It was a great way to start 2015 and an inspiring day for everyone who participated. The workshops were excellent and there were opportunities for staff to share experiences across our academies and with University colleagues. Lunchtime conversations were full of ideas for future activity in our schools.”

The University of Chichester was approved as an academy sponsor by the Office of the Schools Commissioner in 2012 and now has six open academies, including the new-build Berewood Primary School in Waterlooville and The Flying Bull Academy in Portsmouth.

Havant Camera Club Havant Camera Club is well into a successful 2014-15 season. We meet on Tuesday evenings at the St John Ambulance Headquarters, Fraser Road, Bedhampton – opposite the Rugby Club. Find out more about the Club by looking at our website, havantcameraclub.co.uk.

We have speakers from all over the country, as well as competitions for prints and projected images, with visiting judges.

A Set Subject competition, Abstract, gave a very wide choice for Members.

Fortunately, prints do have to have a sticker with the title and the Member's name placed in a standard way on the back, which helps those who put Abstract pictures on the stands to see which way up they are.

Also in the autumn Leo Rich, a very skilled and amusing visitor, gave us a wonderful show from several countries, the most spectacular being those in Africa where he tried to get a picture of a tiger charging – from the front. The last one was blurred and very close up, but Leo was grabbed back into the vehicle just in time!

Another speaker, Janey Devine, had worked in IT and doing the photography for clients' websites; when she retired she bought a yacht and now spends her summers cruising and taking photographs, not only of sea scenes but also of towns and cities nearby – I found that Glasgow is much more attractive than I expected!

Our Christmas Social also brought one of the year's most interesting challenges, Same File print competition. We get a member's picture file and have to make another from it. It's a real challenge, and some very unexpected prints result ; we may have to show how we got the new picture from it – nothing may be added.

Peloponnese and Our Talking News By: Peter Loveridge

Five weeks cycling in the Peloponnese.

Five weeks of hills, mountains, valleys, rugged coastlines, winds, high temperatures and tired bodies. But there is more – stunning vistas, lush orange plantations, olive groves, ancient sights, aromas, warm evenings, sea-lapped taverns, Greek hospitality and not forgetting the unforgettable, the amazing blue of the Ionian and Aegean Seas. The memories will be cherished but, once the body had recovered, it’s the stunning vistas that remained in my mind the longest; whether they be of the mountains, the valleys, the coast, or of the villages - they were for the most part timeless.

A bit of a corny introduction as a way of getting around to our local Talking News but it was at the end of this trip when we were having time out to recover (lying on the beach) and thoughts were becoming homeward bound that I realised that I had seen things that those who use our Talking News will either never see, or will never see again. For many the loss of sight brings down a curtain (no pun intended) on many of the things we take for granted and brings about an isolation that is hard to imagine.

So for those of you that do not know what our Talking News does a little résumé.

Quite simply the Havant Talking News

provides to around 150 people in our area a fortnightly hour-long audio of local news articles, gleaned from local newspapers.

Also, there is a quarterly audio magazine of stories and articles. These are posted out to our ‘Listeners’ on memory sticks and, once listened to, they are returned free of charge. A large number of our Listeners are elderly and the little ‘Stick’ through the post keeps them up to date with local news, it means a lot to them, as many do feel isolated from the wider society.

This product does not happen by magic and we have over 40 volunteers that give of their time to make it happen. Some of the ‘time givers’ scour the papers to identify the stories and then tweak them for audio consumption.

Producers stitch together a programme from these stories ready for a recoding session at our fully equipped studio in East Street. Whilst on recording days a team of 4 Readers gives voice to the stories under the watchful ear of Engineers. There are other tasks but that is the nub of it.

Naturally there is a cost and that cost is met by fund raising, there are no regular grants or subsides for this service.

Now we come to the real reason for this article! I am after fundraisers. I wish to put together a fundraising team of 4 or 5

Monies are available out there but it takes a little effort to tease them out. Bottom line is that I am not asking for specialist skills but I am asking for your time. I cannot think of anything more important than your time. You will not be committing yourself to regular hours, time out for holidays and other exciting events are the norm – I have just done exactly

The last couple of months have proven very successful here at Havant Academy, we have raised money for charities, had sporting success from students as well as appearing live on the BBC News!

Thursday 29th January may have seemed like a normal day to most of you, however for Havant Academy it was one of the busiest.

From 9am we had the National BBC News reporting team in the Academy, interviewing students, Miss Cassady, and filming lessons to use in the 1 o’clock and 6o’clock news. It was official, we were going to be live on the BBC

Huge Success for Havant Academy!

News at 1, and recording took place on the Atrium Bridge in the middle of lunchtime.

Havant Academy had been picked as one of the most improved schools in the country in light of the recently published GCSE league tables. Within just 4 years our results have improved by 40%.

These past four years have been hard work, different leaderships, new sponsors, as well as being placed in special measures

by Ofsted in July 2013.

Staff, Governors, TKAT and our students have been knuckling down to improve the Academy. This hard work led us to being the Academy which was to make national and international news on January 29th with the publication of the league tables.

The students showed the BBC how proud they are to be part of the amazing journey Havant Academy has taken over the past few years. We have been inundated with messages of congratulations from members of the community as well as other schools locally and nationally.

SOLACE Christmas Boxes During December 2014 our students took the time to design, create and fill Christmas Boxes for a local charity known as SOLACE. This charity helps local families with the basics, food parcels, bedding, furniture and more. SOLACE spends time in the Academy helping our students.

Each and every tutor group took a lot of time and effort in producing these boxes; they were overfilling with food, toys and wrapped presents for local families in need.

On the 3rd December Havant Academy took part in the national NSPCC Number Day. This charity day raises awareness of the NSPCC by encouraging schools across the country to take part in fun Maths activities throughout their school day.

Students and staff took part in many activities throughout the day based around Maths. Portsmouth News reported on the day’s events, as well as recording some of the staff singing at lunchtime in karaoke.

We managed to raise over £400 for the NSPCC during the day, whilst enhancing our students’ mathematical skills.

Postcode Publications Coup for Hayling Island Boatyard OCEAN racing legend Alan Priddy has revealed he already has 15 orders for exact models of the super powerboat he hopes will help him break another world record.

Along with a large crew, Alan will attempt to complete the fastest ever circumnavigation of the globe in a powerboat.

He wants to shave seven days off the current 60-day record.

Team Britannia Is a £2.9 million British bid to design and build the fastest and most fuel efficient wave slicing powerboat to circumnavigate the globe for the much coveted UIM world record currently held by the New Zealander Pete Bethune at 60 days 23 hours 49 minutes.

The World Record Authorities (UIM) dictate that for recognised circumnavigation the craft has to pass through the Suez and Panama Canals, cross the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator and that the journey must start and finish in the same place.

The boat is a completely new design, from Professor Bob Cripps, former

Technical Director of VT Halmatic. It has been designed in the UK and will be constructed in the Portsmouth area out of marine grade aluminium. It encompasses “an exceptionally efficient hull”, which will cut fuel consumption by up to 30 per cent.

In addition to the design, the vessel will be powered by a revolutionary fuel emulsion, a mixture of diesel, water and emulsifying agent from SulNOx Fuel Fusions.

This will reduce harmful emissions such as particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide.

The effects of the emulsified fuel on the engines and the emissions will be monitored for the duration of the voyage and the results published on-line.

At the recent unveiling Alan revealed Hayling’s ABC Marine as the builder of the £2.9m 80ft powerboat which will have two flights of stairs and be big enough to sleep 14 people. Speaking from ABC Marine, in Mill Rythe, Alan said: ‘This is the day that we turned the tap on for everything to happen.

‘I’ve managed to put together a best of British team – British designers and manufacturers.

The metal was produced by Blackburn metals and laser cut by specialist firm Aalco in Southampton.

The whole construction process is expected to take four months before it start a three-month programme of sea trials in the Solent.

Team Britannia will launch their record bid in November 2015.

The Cops ‘n’ Coffee shop at Greywell shopping centre in Leigh Park has had two reasons to celebrate recently.

They have not only had the successful project running for a year but also the five volunteers who help to keep the coffee brewing were awarded the Hampshire Constabulary volunteer team of the year.

The award was given by the Chief Constable Andy Marsh at a birthday party held at Cops ‘n’ Coffee.

Chief Constable Andy Marsh said: “What is so wonderful about this is it brings the community, that we’re here to serve, and the police together with lots of other agencies.

“We work together to solve lots of problems.

We’ve got volunteers here that signpost people to other areas if they need it – domestic abuse help, anti-social behaviour, Community Speedwatch.”

“It’s also got the support of the local council which I’m really pleased about.” Sergeant Garry Smith, who is behind the project, said: “People can come and meet their local officers, they can tell us what their concerns are, what the problems are in their area and what they think our priorities should be.

“We also give crime prevention advice and have a chat about issues and concerns in their neighbourhood.’

“Our volunteers are absolutely invaluable to us. We couldn’t do it without them. Riding through Mongolia Challenge yourself by riding through Mongolia on horseback for your Air Ambulance.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) are calling upon horse riders and travel enthusiasts to help raise funds by joining a team of riders to trek across Mongolia on horseback this Autumn. The intrepid team will take part in a unique challenge to ride 160km in six days, though landscapes largely un-visited by other tourists. The trek will take place from 10th -20th September this year and the charity has already been inundated with enquiries from the horse riding community.

Horse riding accidents account for 16% of all HIOWAA call outs. Former patient Laura Newnham, who was rescued by the Air Ambulance following a riding accident in the New Forest commented ‘Since my accident I have come to realise that the Air Ambulance provides a vital service – particularly to the horse riding community.

Horse riding accidents often happen in remote or isolated areas that would be inaccessible by a land ambulance. I donate and will always

be grateful to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance for rescuing me. It’s a day I will never forget, but without the Air Ambulance things could have been very different.’

DESSERT BEERS We tend to think of beer as something we drink before or during a meal, but beer at the end of a meal – surely not? Sherry, port, dessert wine, liqueurs or brandy are the tipples most usually associated with completing a culinary repast. I have been researching the beer market and would suggest that there are several beers that are best appreciated in small quantities at the end of a meal, preferably to accompany a fine cheese board. These dessert beers are very strong (7 -13%) and have very rich complex flavours.

Foremost amongst the dessert beers I would place Trappist ales. These are specialist beers brewed by Trappist monks at abbeys in Belgium and the Netherlands.

The only beers allowed to be called Trappist are, Achelse, Orval, Chimay, Rochefort, Westmalle, Westvleteren and La Trappe.

complex fruity taste. This beer can be found in major supermarkets such as Waitrose for as little as £2.30 a 330ml bottle.

There are also a number of British beers which would be suitable for drinking at the end of a meal. I have been particularly impressed with the smooth, moreish Traquair House Ale (7.2%) which is brewed in Scotland and is widely available from about £2.30 for a 330ml bottle.

Another contender as dessert beers are Imperial Russian Stouts. These are very strong (7-13%) dark beers which have intense flavours of chocolate, liquorice and coffee. Sussex brewer, Harvey’s of Lewes produce a very fine Imperial Extra Double stout (9%). This retails for around £2.65 a 275ml bottle. A type of beer which was once popular and could be viewed as a dessert beer is Barley Wine. Gold Label barley wine is still available, albeit in cans

generally referred to as Abbey ales, the best known brands are Leffe, Maredsous and Kasteel. These can be found in major supermarkets, specialist off-licences and via internet retailers. I would recommend starting with a Westmalle Dubbel (7%) which is a reddish brown beer with a rich

Enjoy your beer drinking and try to sample real ales, local breweries and speciality beers rather than bland supermarket brews.

Stuart MacBride burst onto the literary scene in 2005 with his debut novel Cold Granite, which followed the adventures of Detective Sergeant Logan McRae, who is known as Lazarus or Laz due to surviving a particularly bloody knife attack before the series started. He was part of a Major Investigation Team run by the foul, but beautifully conceived Detective Inspector Roberta Steel, a chain smoking harridan who mercilessly bullied her hapless crew.

Now on his ninth outing, McRae has gone from an acting Inspector in the last two novels, under the promoted Chief Inspector Steel, to a duty sergeant in a quiet Highland town after experiencing burn out and upsetting the powers-that-be with his unconventional policing style.

However, all that changes when the body of a young girl is discovered in a derelict swimming pool, and soon Logan is reluctantly drawn back to the high pressure world of a major investigation, while trying to perform his regular duties at the same time.

And perhaps the stand-out selling point behind this series is the dynamic between Steel and McRae. Forever arguing, there’s a genuine affection between the two, indeed Logan is the father of Steel and her wife’s child after he was browbeaten into becoming a donor and is now very much a part of her modern family. So much so, that Susan, Steel’s wife is pregnant again, and Logan is once again the reluctant father – though he dotes on his daughter and is secretly excited about the new baby.

To make his personal life more tangled, he has a girlfriend in a persistent vegetative state, and has sold his house to help pay for her care, Internal Affairs are convinced that he is dirty – he is, but only through circumstances, and to add to his troubles, he finds himself becoming close to a woman who has turned up claiming that the murdered girl may be her missing daughter.

Added to this is a secretive and violent child abuse ring that needs taking down, and you’ve got one of the best books to burst from the resurgent Tartan Noir genre. If you’re fed up of Rebus, McRae is a worthy successor.

How many cafés do you think there are in Park Parade, two or three maybe?

Well with a new café opening next to the Cops ‘N Coffee shop, it brings up the total to five. Then there’s a baguette shop, bakery, chip shop, two Chinese takeaways, an Indian takeaway, two kebab shops (with one about to open) and a coffee and snack bar in the tattooist/hairdresser. Oh and not forgetting the bingo hall serves food, too!

Now choice is a good thing, as is the commercial regeneration of a previously dying shopping area. But there’s no diversity and that worries me a little, because shopping areas need to branch out and come up with new ideas in this age of internet shopping. Filling the area with food premises might seem like a good idea in the short term, but I’m worried that we might be creating the perfect conditions for a ghost town in four or five years, when people are forced to tighten the purse strings even further in this world of growing prices and shrinking wages. |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

THE ENDLESS RIVER

‘The Endless River’ by Pink Floyd is like taking a warm bath on a cold winter night.

Billed as their final studio album, it is in essence a distillation of the albums of their glory years. Nowhere is this more apparent than the opening track, ‘Things Left Unsaid,’ which would not have been out of place on ‘Wish You Were Here,’ as there are striking similarities with ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond.’

But you know, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. We’re talking about one of the greatest bands of all time here doing what they do best. And there’s a poignancy here as Richard Wright died soon after laying down his keyboard tracks – so maybe there’s something in this final album business after all.

And it obviously goes without saying that the rift between Roger Waters and David Gilmour carries on apace, so it appears that Live 8 really was the last chance for fans to see the whole postBarrett Floyd together since the mid-1980s.

Another gamble that the band has taken is to make the album almost exclusively instrumental. And believe me, this is a gamble. Roger Waters and Pick Floyd generally, are known for their sweeping vocals and haunting lyrics, millions of album sales can’t be wrong. And it’s also surprising to note that the person who gets the most words out is Stephen Hawking, reprising his sample from ‘Keep Talking’.

Perhaps the greatest thing about this album is its accessibility. Floyd fans are going to want it, music lovers are going to want it, and people looking for a bit of history are going to want the last album by one of the greats. And to return to my opening analogy, I recommend running a warm bath, lighting some candles and putting ‘The Endless River’ on in the background. It’s almost the perfect way to chill out. |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

In early February, Havant residents woke to the first snowfall of the year, as the top picture shows. Unfortunately for school children, it was too light a dusting for a snow day to be called, no doubt to the relief of parents saved the added burden of finding childcare at short notice.

There was a resumption of fairly heavy snow at around ten am, as the lower picture shows, but it didn’t settle, so traffic chaos was averted. But it’s a yearly reminder of the difficulties faced by older and less frail members of the community, so check on your neighbours and see if there’s any errands you can run that might save them from going out.

Postcode Publications Meridian Shopping Centre raises money for children affected by serious illnesses The Meridian Shopping Centre in Havant raised an incredible £1,256 for local children’s charity ‘Over The Wall’ from children’s visits to Santa’s Grotto. The money will help fund camps in 2015, giving children an experience of a lifetime.

Part of the SeriousFun network founded by Paul Newman- Over The Wall children’s charity is offering children a memorable and empowering camp experience, proven to increase the confidence, self-belief and enhance the children’s resilience, reaching beyond the limitations of their illness.

The recreational activity camps will take place in sites across the UK, each of which are medically sound environments, with highly skilled medical professionals available 24 hours a day. Those attending camp will participate in activities such as archery, clay pigeon shooting, fishing, drumming circles, creative writing, climbing and kayaking.

Last year, Over the Wall supported more than 500 children and families and are hoping to reach out to at least 600 this year continuing to offer life changing experiences to children with a vast range of medical conditions.

These conditions may include, cancer and leukaemia, blood disorders, diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders such as Crohn’s or Liver disease, rheumatological conditions like Arthritis, skin conditions such as severe eczema, multiple severe allergies, heart conditions, kidney disease, neurological disorders such as Epilepsy and many more.

Over the Wall also offer separate camps for the siblings of children affected by illnesses and long weekends for the whole family to enjoy.

Former camper, nine year old Adam Sharp, who has attended Over The Wall's south camp, has cancer and a brain tumour which has led to hemiplegia (the weakness or paralysis of one side of the body), as well as a visual impairment that affects his mobility and independence.

Adam has attended the Dorset based Over the Wall camps twice, and has found that his camp experience has given him the opportunity to participate in activities he wouldn’t ordinarily have the chance to try.

Adam’s mum, Jos explains, “Adam has been to camp twice now and loves being Meridian Shopping Centre Manager Rob Fr yer hands over the cheque with ‘children like him’, where all the kids are ‘different’ and |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| everyone is accepted. BARRATT HOMES TOP MORTGAGE TIPS: Check your credit score First of all, check your score.You can do this easily on-line with the two main credit reference agencies; Experian and Equifax.

Ensure all information is correct and if it isn’t, write to the agency and request that they change it. If you have a poor score, you will be able to start making changes to improve it.

Understand your limits If you have existing credit such as credit cards and loans, you must ensure that you keep up with the minimum repayments. It’s all in your history You may not realise, but as many as 1 in 10 house hunters looking to buy a home have no credit history. They are often viewed as less credible as lenders have no information to base their decision on.

Although you should never get in debt to build up a credit history, by taking out a credit card and using it regularly (ensuring you pay off the bill at the end of the month with a direct debit) you will begin to build a credit history. Another good way to build your score is by taking out a mobile phone contract.

Get on the electoral roll You should try to show lenders that you have a ‘stable’ lifestyle, for example you are in full-time employment and live at a fixed

address. If you aren’t already, register for the electoral roll as you’re unlikely to get credit without it. Also if you can, provide information such as a landline number rather than a mobile number.

Be consistent and double check It sounds simple, but one slip up on the application form could scupper your chances for securing a mortgage. This could be from a simple mistake, such as putting a salary of £3,000 instead of £30,000 but it

could also be from inconsistent information (even on other mortgage application forms) as this can flag up possible cases of fraud and could slow down or stop your application altogether.

Also bear in mind that submitting numerous applications in a short space of time could have a negative effect as lenders will worry about why you have been rejected before.

In a dour ‘six-pointer’ a moment of quality created the one chance which luckily fell to Matt Tubbs who put the cross from Ryan Taylor on the left away with aplomb. Pompey’s following fixtures at Dagenham & Redbridge on 10 February and Exeter at Fratton Park on 14 February, are both winnable if they can raise their game; perhaps by playing in a closer formation where they could find and help each other a little more readily.

Team 1,2,3 the Olympic squad sailing pair of Sophie Weguelin and Eilidh McIntyre, have resumed their campaign to win a place in the British sailing team at the next Olympics in Brazil in 2016. The ladies were in action at the start of the 470 Class medal event on Biscayne Bay in Miami, USA for the first of this year's series of week-long ISAF Sailing World Cup Regattas. The event got under way in brisk winds on Monday 26 January with Sophie and EiIidh taking a win on the first day. The pair finished the event in seventh place overall in a strong field from around the world. The regatta provided strong breezes with 36 knot squalls registered during the week making it a tough and physical start to the season.

Tennis As predicted in this column in October, Andy Murray returned to full fitness and form at the Australian Open in Melbourne last month.

After a hectic close season in Miami where as well as proposing to long standing girl-friend Kim Sears, who accepted his proposal by swearing her allegiance to him, Murray in a show of support for his new

head coach Amelie Mauresmo, removed his long term friend and assistant coach Dani Vallverdu and fitness coach Jez Green from his team. He replaced Green with a new fitness coach, Matt Little. Existing physiotherapist Mark Bender completed the reduced team. Andy reached the final of the seasons first grand slam in Melbourne. Murray crossed swords with Dani Vallverdu in his semi-final victory over against Tomas Berdych, who is now coached by Vallverdu.

Although Murray lost to Novak Djokovic in the final, he has regained his top four seeding and demonstrated his return to form.

Sitting in third place in the Vanarama Conference South how do you sum up the season so far?

“I have been pleased with the way the season has gone. We have had a couple of bad performances earlier in the season but since then we have gone from strength to strength.

We have a good and very versatile squad, which has been proved in the last couple of games. It’s important that all the lad’s buy into what we are trying to achieve as a club as it is very much a team effort.”

Is Promotion into the National Conference League (one step off the Football League) possible this season?

“That would be fantastic to achieve, but there are some good clubs like Ebbsfleet, Bromley and Boreham Wood all trying to do the same thing and it will be tough. We missed out on the play-offs last season on goal difference and any improvement on that will show progression. We don’t mind if we go up as Champions or via the Play-offs, as long as we go up!”

With the team having played in their last two matches with ten men due to ‘red cards’ will this affect their chances in the run-in?

“Obviously it will not help. Important players that have played week in and week out will miss matches. We have appealed against Nic Ciardini’s red card but if he is found guility he will miss four matches (second offence of the season). Nic started the season slowly after being our top scorer last season but has recently been back to his best. He has scored some important goals and caused teams problems with his deep runs. As he has got fitter and sharper he has proved to be a hard player to contain.

We have lost both Ed Harris and Brian Dutton, our central defensive pairing in the past two weeks with injuries. This is when as a Manager it is important to pick up points and use your squad to best effect.”

Finally after managing AFC Bournemouth in the Professional game how have you found the managing in the Semi-Professional game?

“I am really enjoying the experience. I spent the first few months learning the standards of both players and teams at this level. I now feel I know all about all the players and teams in the League but have had some superb help from my staff.

Shaun Gale (Assistant Manager) has spent over a decade at this level managing and playing and I feel we work well as a Management team.

The club is progressing well towards the next level of football and I have received maximum support from Chairman Derek Pope and the board of directors.

I would also like to thank the PO9 – PO11 newspaper for its continued support and hopefully next season will see Havant & Waterlooville FC playing on the National stage.”

Cycling - Tony Hoar, British Racing Cyclist

Tony Hoar of Emsworth born 10 February 1932 was a British racing cyclist in the 1950’s. Part of a sporting family Tony Hoar famously was selected for the first British team ever to participate in the Tour de France in 1955. Then the Tour was for national and regional teams only.

The aim was for the Hercules Team to be made up of all British racing cyclist, but although Great Britain managed to qualify not as many of team were British as Hercules had intended. A number of the possible racers returned to Britain overwhelmed by the challenge of the tour. After a

gruelling 24 days on the Tour Tony finished in 69th and last, lanterne rouge.

Nevertheless it was heralded an amazing achievement as only two of the team survived to the finish. The other British rider to finish was Brian Robinson in 29th overall.

The winner of the 1995 Tour de France was Frenchman Louison Bobet.

Also in 1995 Tony Hoar rode in the Daily-Express Tour of Britain. He won the 145 km fourth stage from Filey, North Yorkshire to Sheffield in 3 hrs 57 m 44 secs. He finished the Tour 19th in the general

(finishing) classification.

Postcode Publications Portsmouth Cyclist’s Touring Club (CTC) Club ride By Mike Skiffins Cyclists meet at The Spring for Club ride My first club roadride with Portsmouth CTC this year was on Wednesday, 7th January.

It was a fine day and over fellow 30 riders started out from The Spring in Emsworth Road, Havant. To avoid such a large number of riders obstructing traffic we split into three groups. The faster, fitter riders set off for Wickham by a longer and hillier circuit, whilst the second group took a more direct path. The final group, which included me, who prefer keeping within their limits avoided the main roads to Wickham by taking minor roads via Denmead and Soberton. We rode though the Forest of Bere, and once clear of the trees had splendid views over the rolling South Downs as we climbed and then descended to arrive at Wickham by 11.00 am.

Once everyone arrived in Wickham for our coffee break, we arranged to spread ourselves between several establishments to avoid long queues or crowding and also to give custom to more than one trader.

After Coffee a few of us returned to base at Havant, but the majority rode on to have lunch at Titchfield Haven. Although the ride was planned some time ago, coincidence meant that those interested were able to get a good view from Titchfield Haven of the cargo ship stranded off Leeon-Solent on the Bramble Bank. We subsequently learned that the high tide had allowed the vessel to free itself and was probably on the move as the cyclists finished their light lunch. It transpired that the Ship drifted, still listed at 52 degrees, some two miles to the east before the tugs standing off were able to secure her. Of course she has since been successfully righted and towed back to Southampton Docks.

Havant Rugby Club have reached the final of the 2014-15 Hampshire Gales HSB Cup. The final will be played on 4 April, but Havant must wait to see who their opponents will be. The second semi-final will be played on 14th February when Portsmouth take on Gosport & Fareham.

The winner of this second semi-final will host the final against Havant on 4 April.

In their semi-final against Basingstoke RFC, Havant gained revenge for the defeat in the closing minute of last seasons Hampshire Cup Final to their old rivals. The Havant XV were unstoppable in the semifinal of this year’s completion at Hooks Lane on 24 January, as they swept ‘Stoke aside to win by 62 – 13.

In London League Division One South, Havant continue to climb up the league. On the 31 January they defeated Hove by 27 – 15 in difficult conditions at Hooks Lane.

Following the win, Havant edged closer to Guildford one place ahead of them, as they

lost to second placed Chobham. All this on a day when the third placed Sidcup went to fourth placed Sutton & Epsom with visitors Sidcup winning a very close game by 11 – 5.

Coach Will Knight was upbeat following Havant’s victory over Hove and was confident that the team is now good enough to finish in the top six. He was however a little rueful that the team had not made a better start to the season.

Something hopefully that can be avoided next season? But there is still plenty to look forward to in the remainder of this season.

SOUTH HANTS JUNIOR VOLLEYBALL CLUB Volleyball is an energetic and dynamic sport, played the world over and has featured as a sport in Postcode Publications on many occasions. It can be played indoors, outdoors, standing, sitting, from 2 up to 6 a side, single sex or mixed. It can be a great sport for all the family. It can be an elite demanding sport but the main thing about volleyball is that the people who play at any level have great fun, make friends and keep fit.

South Hants Junior Volleyball Club is a recently formed club for youngsters (boys and girls) aged between 10 and 18, whether they have played volleyball before or not. The club was established in September 2014 and was featured in an article in the November/December 2014 edition of PO9 & PO11. Since then the Club has been going from strength to strength and its doors are still open to any youngsters wishing to play volleyball.

Club sessions are held in the Sports

Hall at Horndean Technology College in Barton Cross, Waterlooville, PO8 9PQ, on Saturdays mornings during school term time from 1030 - 1230. The Club would like to see new juniors coming along and joining in the fun sessions. The first 4 sessions are free with this article and then after that it costs just £2 per 2 hour session. After 10 sessions new members receive a free club T-shirt.

The club is run by fully qualified coaches, registered with the National Governing Body, Volleyball England and has full public liability insurance. The safety of the juniors is paramount and the Club fulfils all requirements in terms of safe guarding children and young adults. Sessions are fun, active, sociable, competitive, healthy and aspirational.

Juniors are invited to go along, maybe with a friend, and have a go.
