The need for housing You cannot fail to go through a single newspaper without reading some commentary on the need for housing in the UK, especially in the South-East.

With Berewood delivering 2,550 homes, many of which will be classified as affordable, we wanted to use this opportunity to explain the different housing types on offer, as well as introduce you to a new classification of housing that we think would be suitable for potential Berewood residents, namely the private rented sector (PRS) – which we will look at later in this article.

Affordable Housing There are a number of homes available via the Grainger Trust that are classified as Affordable Housing, and at present, there is an even split between social rent, affordable rent, intermediate housing along with shared ownership.

Eligibility for each of these classifications differ, and is determined by local incomes and house prices.

• Social rent is set according to a Government formula, this is typically two fifths of market rent.

These homes are in demand and are distributed by priority. Mostly these homes are provided by local authorities, but private registered providers such as the Grainger Trust are also able to provide this tenancy.

• Affordable rent is a new offering introduced by the coalition government, which allows housing associations to deliver more homes to individuals who are not able to afford market rent and are not currently in social rented accommodation. Like social rent, affordable homes, are subject to rent controls that require rent to be a maximum of 80 per cent of local market rent (including service charges, where applicable).

• Intermediate rent offers individuals the opportunity to move into a brand new or refurbished home, at commonly 20 per cent less than the market rent. To quality for intimidate rent, you need to be able to make a commitment to join a home ownership scheme in the short to medium term, with the discount on rent a tool to save for a deposit.

• Shared ownership is a government-funded scheme designed to get people onto the property ladder. Would-be shared owners get the opportunity to purchase between 25 per cent and 75 per cent of their property, and pay below market rent on the remainder, with the ability to staircase to full home-ownership.

This is becoming a popular alternative to full ownership, which is out of reach for many.

An alternative housing type As a result of the housing crisis, the Private Rented Sector (PRS) is growing and caters for those who are unable to meet the eligibility criteria for ‘affordable housing’, as set out above, and are unable to get onto the property ladder.

At present, the PRS accounts for 16.5 per cent of all households, approximately 3.8 million homes in England. Many of these homes are rented out by individual private landlords, who usually have less than 5 properties and because the sector is unregulated they can sometimes be in a poor state of repair.

Grainger is different. The company is a professional landlord with over 100 years of experience and we manage more than 20,000 homes across the UK and Germany.

With a shortage of properties in the housing market, now reaching crisis levels, combined with the rising costs of home ownership, the Government is supportive of growth in the PRS, and is investing £1billion into a Build-To-Rent Fund.

As the financial backing available from the government, is designed to attract pension funds and life assurance investors to invest long term in PRS led schemes. , These investors would look to using established professional landlords such as Grainger. They are committed to long term investment, they prefer steady growth to short term market driven peaks and troughs, and they have the funds immediately available to make a real difference to the supply chain by underwriting a new professionally managed Private Rented Sector.

With the backing of government funds and institutional investment, professional landlords, like us, will be able to provide a higher standard of rental units, provide a better service for tenants, as well as offering greater protection against hidden agency fees and landlord costs. At present, there is no provision for PRS homes at Berewood but we are interested in introducing this as a further option for our tenants.

While we have traditionally been a nation of home owners, rental is now becoming a more desirable option for many as it offers greater flexibility and means that tenants are never at risk of being caught in the trap of negative equity. For those renting with professional landlord, financial stability is provided through transparent rent setting mechanisms, and, security of tenure which comes through longer leases gives those renters the comfort that they cannot be evicted on a whim. Many now prefer this approach rather than the burden of a mortgage.

Changing the lives of children living with disabilities in Burkina Faso My name is Kaitland Coombes, I am 18 and I live in the village of Clanfield, situated between the towns of Waterlooville and Petersfield, where I attended secondary school at The Petersfield School 2007-2012 before studying Health and Social Care at South Downs College in Portsmouth, where I am still a student.

I am on a three-month placement with Handicap Solidaire Burkina in Ouagadougou, the capital city of Burkina Faso. I am here as a volunteer on the International Citizen Service (ICS) scheme with York-based charity International Service, a project partner of ICS. ICS is a UK government-funded development program that brings together young people aged 18-25 from all backgrounds to fight poverty.

My placement started on 7th April and I will return to the UK on 22nd June 2014.

I had heard about the ICS volunteering

scheme in 2012 and applied to take part when I turned 18. For a long time I have wanted to volunteer in Africa to experience its culture and make a contribution to its development – and the ICS scheme has given me the opportunity to do just that!

Through developing positive relationships with national volunteers, my colleagues at HSB and with the local community, I have been able to experience many traditional Burkinabe celebrations, from baptisms and weddings to funerals and effigy wakes, further developing my insight into the local culture and the beliefs and superstitions of Burkina Faso!

I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience here, which has enlightened me more than I could have imagined and hoped for with my ICS placement, and I plan to return to West Africa, especially Burkina Faso, in the near future!

Men’s Shed coming to Havant?

As part of our policy to enable community projects, Postcode Publications intend to establish a ‘Men’s Shed’ in central Havant in conjunction with Chris Davage who is set to develop another in Cowplain, as part of a world-wide growing movement.

‘Men’s Shed’ provides encouragement for older men who want to get together, utilise their skills, learn new skills and help others to learn - all in a pleasant environment.

It is proposed that the Havant ‘Shed’ (HAMESH) will comprise a workshop with tools, materials and equipment provided by Postcode Publications as required, a

comfortable private meeting room, kitchen and toilets.

Day-to-day management of the Shed will be up to the ‘Shedders’ using the facility, deciding on activities they want to follow in the space provided, and looking after the future of HAMESH as they want to.

Coercive control is an act or a pattern of acts of assault, threats, humiliation and intimidation or other abuse that is used to harm, punish, or frighten their victim.

Coercive is ongoing rather than isolated and unconnected incidents.

What sort of acts will constitute coercive control?

The sort of things that will constitute coercive control are: • domestic violence: ‘ causing fear and physical harm; • intimidation and humiliation: using threats, surveillance (eg stalking), degradation (eg name calling), emotional withdrawal, destruction of possessions; • isolation: undermining and I’ve been told Social Services are going to take my baby from birth – can they do this?

Social Services can only remove a child from birth if they believe the child is at risk of immediate significant harm. If this is the case, Social Services would either need an Order of the Court to remove or the presence of the police, who can remove a child for up to 72 hours, during which time Social Services would need to obtain an Order of the Court.

If Social Services made any attempts to

Paris trip - May 2014 A group of Havant Academy Year 9 and 10 students discovered the cultural and culinary delights of Paris recently during a three-night stay as they immersed themselves in the language, culture, architecture and art of the French capital.

The aim of the trip, from 9th-12th May 2014, was to give the 36 enthusiastic students a taste of the French culture and after reaching Paris via coach and ferry, the students soaked up the culture, visiting famous historical sights such as the Arc de Triomphe, The Louvre Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral, Sacre Coeur Basilica and the Eiffel Tower.

This appalling figure has catapulted an increase in demand for emergency food banks being set up across the whole country. In fact, there’s been a huge rise in the number of local food banks being set up in our local area.

These are not for profit organizations that rely solely on the generosity of the public for donations and volunteers. Without your support, many people face the prospect of going hungry each night.

The Trussel Trust, the UK’s largest food bank service, helped feed hundreds of thousands of people last year and said the

The funding will enable residents who improve the energy efficiency of their homes to get between 10% and 70% cashback on installation costs.

Work carried out could include insulation, new boilers, double-glazing, solar panels or heat pumps. Work can be funded privately or through a Green Deal loan, either route will attract a cashback payment.

The scheme is open to people living in their own properties and privately rented properties with landlord consent. It is open to all ages and you do not need to be receiving any benefits to take part.

Just under £200,000 of this funding will be used by Highbury College to offer local businesses a 50% discount on energy efficiency training courses such as insulation installation and to subsidise certification to become a Green Deal installer.

The scheme called Solent Green Deal has been set up by councils in Hampshire to help residents make their homes more energy efficient. Solent Green Deal advisers can give information on all aspects of the work from property assessment and upfront finance to installation - and will help residents to access this cashback scheme.

Cycling the South Coast By: Robin Summerhill I am a self-publishing author, producing books on long distance cycling and walking opportunities around the country, mainly concentrating on former railway routes which are now footpaths/ cycle tracks, and canal towpaths. The books also have a strong flavour of local transport history about them. They are very much aimed at the “leisure” end of the market, breaking the journeys down into easy manageable sections of about 5 miles each way.

My latest book “Cycling the South Coast” looks at the cycling and walking opportunities between Portland Bill and Havant, including the former railways which are now cycle tracks and footpaths between Fortuneswell and Weymouth (The Rodwell Trail), Poole to Brockenhurst (Castleman’s Trailway) the Stokes Bay Railway Path in Gosport and the Hayling Billy Trail between Hayling Island and Havant.

A coastal option for the route between Poole and Lymington is also described, and there is also a section looking at the Isle of Wight, including its former railway routes between Freshwater and Yarmouth, Newport and Cowes, Bembridge to Brading, and Sandown to Newport and on to Wootton. Getting tough as we’ve had enough A new hard hitting approach on anyone who drops litter or who fails to clean up after their dog. The Pick Up or Pay Up campaign is simple – pick up your dog mess or litter or you will be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice resulting in a fine of £75.

Havant Borough Council have now joined forces with enforcement company Kingdom to combat these problems.

Kingdom will work in partnership with Havant Borough Council’s Environment Rangers at hotspots areas that have been identified. Areas such as Town Centres the focus will be on fast-food litter and cigarette butts.

In the north of the borough, the campaign will concentrate on dog-fouling in

the Hart Plain, Cowplain and Waterloo wards.

Natalie Meagher, Service Manager for Neighbourhood Quality said: “From today Havant Borough Council will be working in partnership with Kingdom. Previously the borough benefited from the work of Environment Rangers, local clean-up groups and anti-litter education work in schools.

This new campaign – Pick up or Pay Up will be a further boost to their efforts.

Anyone dropping litter or not cleaning up after their dog will get an on-the-spot fine.

We have informed and warned but now its time to get tough. If everyone does their bit, our streets will stay much cleaner.”

As part of the campaign Environment Rangers from Havant Borough Council are highlighting the mess that is left behind in the boroughs parks and open spaces.

The Rangers will be visiting several parks to draw attention to the irresponsible behaviour of a minority of dog owners who fail to clear up after their pets, by spraying brightly coloured biodegradable Pink paint on to any dog mess they find.

The ‘Paint Poo Pink’ project is aimed at drawing people’s attention to the problem whilst encouraging people to pick up after themselves or be issued with a Fixed

Penalty Notice costing £75.

The marked messes in the target areas will be left for a day before being removed to highlight the extent of the problem and the effect it has on the boroughs open spaces.

We treat a lot of runners, walkers and sports people in the clinic. Ankle sprains are a common complaint. The most common is a lateral ligament sprain, where your foot turns in and you get pain on the outside of your ankle. Other symptoms include swelling, bruising and loss of movement.

Hay Fever and Allergy Hay fever afflicts 10-25% of the population and the term is usually applied to summer season plant pollen allergies. Although typically thought of as a summer condition it can affect people at any time of year depending on the pollen the individual is allergic to. Ash and pine pollen is released in in April and May whilst weed pollens last from June to September. If you are really unlucky you could be sensitive to several pollens and suffer from March to October!

I often identify the condition in individuals who insist they cannot have hay fever as they have never experienced it before.

Unfortunately an allergy can develop at any time in life but usually starts for the first time after the age of 6.

Symptoms Itchy eyes, runny or blocked nose, sneezing, sometimes skin rashes.

Hay fever may also make asthma worse and cause facial pain due to sinusitis. Chronic sufferers may experience depression and the pollen season is at its height during the exam period. For these reasons effective treatment is essential.

Prevention The severity of symptoms will depend on the pollen count so keep an eye on the forecast.

Postcode Publications Some simple preventative suggestions: 1. Shut windows at night (hard when hot!); 2. Use air-conditioning in your car if it has a pollen filter; 3. Put petroleum jelly in the nostrils to trap pollen; 4. Wear wraparound sunglasses.

Treatment: 1. Oral antihistamine tablets.Various types are available, some cause sedation. Individual response will vary between drugs; 2. Antihistamine eye drops; 3. Nasal steroid sprays. These must be used regularly and are best started before the pollen season.

I have also found that saline nasal irrigation to be very effective as it washes out pollens from the nasal mucosa. This may be the preferred option to those who want a treatment without drugs.

Whether you’re taking your GSCEs, A Levels, NVQs, diplomas, degrees or any other final exams there is one thing that we can all guarantee: stress.You might not be actually taking the exams instead you’re on support duty with tea, biscuits and a helping hand but you’re fully aware of the worry occurring at this time of year.

Recently, I was lucky enough to be asked into a local school to help the Year 11 pupils try to relax through the practice of yoga.

As a mum of two daughters, one taking her College Finals and the other taking her GCSEs, I know first-hand how stress can manifest itself and how different it is for everyone.

Within yoga we practice Pranayama, which is the art of controlling the breath and is used in part to help calm and focus the mind and to help de-stress the mind as well as the body.

There are three parts to Pranayama: • Inhalation (Puraka) • Exhalation (Rechaka) • Breath Retention (Kumbhaka) The inhalation fills the lungs with air, thereby bringing oxygen into the body.

Breath retention increases absorption of oxygen. Exhalation helps to rid the body of toxins and stale air from the lungs.

Although there are various different Pranayama practices I chose ‘Breath to Count’. Here I have suggested various counts but you, just like the Year 11 students, will find the one that suits you through practice. The Inhalation, Retention and Exhalation can vary in count but the more in control of your breathing and the more relaxed you become the longer the count will be.

Adi and the Dream Train Adam Halsall has illustrated a children's picture book. This would be exciting for any ten-year-old, but for Adam it is an amazing achievement. Adam has autism, which makes connecting with the world very challenging.

Adi and the Dream Train was written by Adam's grandmother, a professional writer, and illustrated by Adam in his unique and colourful style. It tells the story of the magic train who travels through the darkness to sprinkle golden daydreams over children who are unhappy or afraid. The Dream Train is invisible, until one night he meets a child who is different, a child who can see him and the secrets behind the darkness. Adi and the Dream Train travel together through the night. But Adi has a plan of his own, he wants to ride the Night Mare.

Adam has a special reason for wanting his book to be a success. He and his family are fund-raising for an Autism Assistance dog. Because of their intensive training these dogs are very expensive . Adam has decided that his dog will be called Sunshine.

This very special dog will be able to accompany Adam to shops, restaurants, cinemas, and all the places a guide dog can go, and help him to cope. Adam has never been out without an adult to look after him.

With Sunshine's help, sometime in the future, he will be enabled to achieve a more independent life. Above all Sunshine will be

Pupils from Yr 3 and 4 at Woodcroft Primary School, Lovedean, staged performances of 'Shakespeare Rocks' by Steve Titford; a musical homage to some of the works of the Bard of Avon. The performances were played to audiences of parents, relatives, governors, staff and other pupils. The lively 45 minute long show, contained scenes which included references to The Globe Theatre, the 'Scottish' play and Romeo and Juliet. These were interspersed with rousing songs such as; 'Will's Wonderful Words, Romeos and Juliets and Don't mention Mac. The show concluded with 'All the World's a Stage.'

Comments were received that indicated that it was the best performance ever seen at Woodcroft Primary. That was all down to the hard work and dedication shown by the pupils in making it such a memorable production.

Stakes WI, along with other members of Bere Forest Group, Waterlooville, took part in a fashion show at their Spring Group Meeting in April. The theme of the show was WW1 fashions and all garments were made from recycled materials. Iris Emerson was the chief seamstress for Stakes and did a wonderful job in producing beautiful period garments from oddments of fabric and charity shop finds. Other members of Stakes WI got into the spirit of things by dressing in similar fashion.

Stakes WI meet on the third Thursday of the month at 7.30pm at Deverell Hall, Purbrook. We have interesting speakers and enjoy lunches, afternoon teas and days out.

ONCE IN A LIFETIME TRIP Crookhorn College embarked on its’ debut historical

adventure tour of the USA this April. Proving Crookhorn really does value education ‘beyond the classroom’, students were taken to two of America’s most important cities; New York and Washington.

Thirty-six GCSE History students pounded the streets of Manhattan in search of the ‘American Dream’. A guided walk of Harlem revealed its past characters and connections with the Civil Rights movement. The following day was devoted to spending time at the Jewish Museum and to pay their respects at the 9/11 memorial site. Students also visited Gettysburg and the site of the famous battlefield. But no trip to New York would be complete without a spot of shopping on Fifth Avenue, dining at Planet Hollywood, a stroll in Central Park and a climb up the tall Empire State Building!

Crookhorn students then travelled to Washington. They saw Memorial Mall where they learnt about Lincoln and Martin Luther King amongst others. After a visit to the Spy Museum, the day was capped off with an all-round American tradition: a baseball match.

Sometimes ‘once in a lifetime’ can be overstated, but for student Charlotte Pearson this was a “breathtaking experience”. Katie Douglas commented how the trip was “something I’ll never, ever, forget”.

Food and Wine I'm Forever Blowing (Drinking) Bubbles Jonathan Rogers from The Solent Wine Experience looks at the classic sparkling wines.

There has always been a long standing love affair with wines of the sparkling variety here in the UK and I'm sure its one that will never die.

Of course the main bubbly everyone knows is Champagne and this will always be associated with celebrations and special occasions. Its certainly a lot pricier than sparkling wines from other areas and countries mainly because there are many regulations that stipulate how Champagne is produced.

These include permitted yields and more manual operations, especially only picking the grapes by hand and not by machine, which ensures better quality grapes.

Champagne is produced from three grapes.

Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meurnier, but sparkling wine can be made from anything really, although some varieties are better than others. Most sparkling wines are though, made in the same way as Champagne which is called Traditional Method, Bottle Fermented or Methode Champenoise. This process involves a secondary fermentation inside the bottle which produces carbonic gas. The bottle is sealed so that the gas can't escape and this is what gives the wine the sparkle. Its then laid down in cool dark cellars to age for a few years before its released. Other areas of France produce outstanding sparkling wines including the Loire and Burgundy.

In Spain they produce Cava. Again an extremely popular wine over here made mainly from the Perellada grape in Catalonia. It must be produced in the Traditional Method to be called Cava.

The Italians have Prosecco made in the Veneto region around the villages of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. Its made from the Prosecco grape but not in the same way as Champagne or Cava. Instead of the second fermentation taking place in the bottle, it takes place in the tank. This is called the Charmat Method. It tends to be drier than Cava which has a creamier palate, but again its a much cheaper price.

You may have heard that English Sparkling wine is on the increase in terms of both production and quality. For Quality Sparkling Wine or PDO we must use the Champagne varieties but for PGI sparkling wines we can use other varieties which include Kerner or Bacchus among others.

as they do in the Champagne region and this is widely recognised as one of the main reasons why the quality is so good.

Summer’s Here- Enjoy a versatile dish which can be eaten hot or cold.

I am delighted to share my open Vegetable Pie with a Cashew and Emmental Crumble with you this month. This is a great dish which can be used as a main in itself, serve it with roasted new potatoes and rosemary with a side salad or it can be made to accompany a meat main. This is an ideal dish to make for a dinner party if you’re not sure whether you need

to cater for vegetarians or not! If you make a large pie and have leftovers it’s great cold as well. Ideal for picnics and to accompany a BBQ and to take in to work for lunch as well. Packed with a variety of vegetables, you can also add lentils to increase the protein and fibre content- a delicious robust and healthy dish which will even satisfy meat-eaters! Ingredients for Pastry: 125 g of whole wheat flour 25 g oats 50 g butter 25g vegetable fat Pinch of salt 4- 6 tables spoons of water Ingredients for filling: 500g ricotta cheese 300g frozen chopped spinach Small butternut squash 1 large onion 25 g flaked almonds 100 g dried mixed lentils Pepper and salt 1 tsp paprika ½ tsp Cumin ½ tsp coriander 3 eggs 2 cloves chopped garlic Olive oil Ingredients for Crumble top: 2 slices white bread 25g grated Emmental Cheese 40g roasted cashew nuts

pulsing in a mini chopper. Add the chopped cashews to the bread crumbs and then stir in the grated Emmental Cheese. Mix well.

11. Pour the mixed filling into the cooked pastry shell and smooth until level. Sprinkle the crumble top mixture over the filling as evenly as possible.

12. Bake the pie in the oven for about 30 minutes or until the top has turned golden brown.

13. For a lighter pie you could leave out the lentils. Also add 2 additional eggs separating the white from yolk. Whisk the white until stiff and fold into the cheese and vegetable mixture. This needs to be done at stage 7 after the vegetables have been mixed in.

To Do: 1. Place whole wheat flour in a food processor with a pinch of salt and butter and fat and pulse until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the oats. Add 4 tbsp of water and pulse until it forms a ball. If the mixture is not coming together add additional tablespoons one at a time as required. Wrap pastry in cling film and chill for 30 minutes.

2. Pre heat fan oven to 180 degrees. Peel and chop butternut squash into roughly 2 cm cubes. Place in a roasting pan. Sprinkle finely chopped garlic, season with pepper and salt and sprinkle ½ tsp of cumin and coriander and 1 tsp of paprika. Drizzle with olive oil.

Mix well to ensure spices are evenly coated on the butternut squash. Roast in the oven for 30 minutes, turning half way through.

3. Wash lentils and cook in pressure cooker for 15 minutes making sure 3 times as much water is added. Skim off the top of the water from the lentils before draining once cooled off. If not using pressure cooker you can use a deep stock pot and simmer for 30 to 40 minutes until cooked through. To save time you can use tinned ready cooked lentils.

4. Roughly dice a large onion and fry until caramelised then remove from the heat.

5. Using a large bowl place the ricotta cheese and mix until soft and add eggs one at a time and mix well.

6. The frozen spinach should be taken out the night before you want to use it left in the fridge to defrost. Squeeze out as much excess water as possible. Add this to the ricotta cheese mixture.

7. Add the roasted butternut squash, cooked lentils and onions to this mixture and season with pepper and salt. Set this filling mixture to one side.

8. Line a 23 cm diameter spring release cake tin with grease prof paper.

9. Lightly flour your work surface where you will be rolling out the pastry. Roll out the pastry to about 3mm thickness so that it is about 25 cm in diameter and just starts to go up the sides of the cake pan. Prick the pastry with a folk. Cover with a sheet of grease proof paper and place baking beans over the top. Bake pastry for 7 minutes then remove the baking beans and grease proof paper and bake for a further 5 minutes.

10. For the crumble topping- place 2 slices of white bread in a food processor and pulse until it resembles bread crumbs. Place in a bowl. Toast the cashew nuts in a frying pan until they turn brown. Let them cool before

THE PRINCESS ROYAL TRUST The Princess Royal Trust for Carers in Hampshire is co-ordinated by The Princess Royal Trust for Carers.

The work we do is tailored to the needs of each individual carer. Our focus is on giving carers accurate and up-to-date information on anything from disability aids to benefits claims. We also run special support groups, act as carers’ advocates, liaise with Social Services, GPs, hospitals and the benefits agency amongst others and also offer a free counselling service to carers by way of qualified voluntary counsellors.

We offer support to carers in their caring role and if we don't know the answer we will find out.

Many carers worry about what will happen to the person they care for in the event of something unexpected happening to them as this could mean they are temporarily unable to care.

The Emergency Planning for Carers Scheme, run by the Princess Royal Trust for Carers in Hampshire (PRTC), is available to help carers throughout Hampshire plan what they would like to happen to the person they care for in the event of an emergency. We help carers draw up their own emergency plan which can be activated should there be an unexpected emergency which prevents the carer from fulfilling their caring role and provides up to 48 hours of free care within the home.

The area of South East Hampshire is currently covered by two Carer Support Workers who provide free support through Home Visits, Carers Clinics and Support Groups, where Carers meet other Carers who are experiencing the same challenges as them, guest speakers are often invited along to provide information and there is always plenty of tea and cakes.

SUMMER FUN DAY The Horndean Junior School PTA invites you along to our SUMMER FUN DAY this year on the afternoon of Saturday, July 5th. It promises to be a fantastic afternoon. Come along for a lovely family day out or get a bunch of friends together and come as a big group including all your parents, siblings and children. There will be something fun for every age group! It is completely free for all children (14 years old & under) to enter and only 50p for adults.

There will be so much to do and see.

This year we are celebrating our unsung heroes that deal with emergencies daily.You will be able to investigate all the special kit and chat to Royal Navy bomb disposal personnel.

The local air ambulance helicopter and their crew will set down on our playground and are looking forward to meeting you.

Then, on our field there will be a special unit motorbike police officer waiting to show you his bike and answer your questions.

Of course, back by popular demand we will also have our local police car unit and our local firefighters – not only happy to show you their fire engine but willing to sit in the stocks while you toss wet sponges at them. That's always a giggle! If you are feeling lucky, there will be plenty of opportunities to win great prizes in the Grand Draw Raffle or at many of the activity stalls and tombolas.

There will be a bouncy slide, gladiator joust & bungee run course to have a go on.

Our Go-Carts are suitable for everyone, so kids, go ahead and challenge your parents.

You'll probably even beat them in a race!

Throughout the afternoon live entertainment will keep people jigging and when you get hot & hungry there will be all sorts of refreshments to choose from: burgers, sweets, ice cream, candy floss, and even a Pimms Tent! Make sure you also bring some extra money so you can do some gift shopping for friends and family at the various gift & craft stalls that will be on the playground.

CATHERINGTON WI was delighted to present to Horndean Food Bank 24 bags of healthy eating item which were funded by some money we received from Radio Solent Treasure Chest. Each bag contained all the necessary item required to follow an attached recipe. Catherington WI i a small village group of some 40 members age range from 50-90 there is something to interest everyone with speakers each month, quizzes, skittles and outings to name but a few.

Postcode Publications THE PRINCESS ROYAL TRUST The Princess Royal Trust for Carers in Hampshire is co-ordinated by The Princess Royal Trust for Carers.

The work we do is tailored to the needs of each individual carer. Our focus is on giving carers accurate and up-to-date information on anything from disability aids to benefits claims. We also run special support groups, act as carers’ advocates, liaise with Social Services, GPs, hospitals and the benefits agency amongst others and also offer a free counselling service to carers by way of qualified voluntary counsellors.

We offer support to carers in their caring role and if we don't know the answer we will find out.

Many carers worry about what will happen to the person they care for in the event of something unexpected happening to them as this could mean they are temporarily unable to care.

The Emergency Planning for Carers Scheme, run by the Princess Royal Trust for Carers in Hampshire (PRTC), is available to help carers throughout Hampshire plan what they would like to happen to the person they care for in the event of an emergency. We help carers draw up their own emergency plan which can be activated should there be an unexpected emergency which prevents the carer from fulfilling their caring role and provides up to 48 hours of free care within the home.

The area of South East Hampshire is currently covered by two Carer Support Workers who provide free support through Home Visits, Carers Clinics and Support Groups, where Carers meet other Carers

who are experiencing the same challenges as them, guest speakers are often invited along to provide information and there is always plenty of tea and cakes.

Hayling Island Choir will be singing ‘Songs Through the Decades’ at the Hayling community centre on July the 19th. at 7.30.

The programme will include songs from the First World War ; selections from Cole Porter, Irvin Berlin, Ivor Novello, through to Andrew Lloyd Webber, and on to ABBA and the Beatles. Stars of the choir will be

singing solos, duets and trios. There is even a threat of ukuleles making an appearance. There will be a chance for the audience to exercise their singing voices during the evening.

Seventh Annual Poetry Prize The Havant Literary Festival are pleased to announce the launch of their latest poetry prize competition.

Stella's Voice Exchange Havant Stella's Voice was founded in 1992 after founder Philip Cameron had been travelling through Moldova. Philip was heartbroken to witness the living conditions in which many of the orphans in Moldova find themselves. This was further compounded when he heard that orphans who become too old for the orphanages are just left out on the dangerous streets to fend for themselves. Many of these young people end up being trafficked. Indeed, recent figures show that over 450,000 young girls have gone missing from Moldova, the majority of those having been trafficked. Stella’s voice are doing all they can to change this, including building homes for young girls who are vulnerable to human trafficking and running a large fully renovated orphanage in Moldova.

Back in the summer of 2013 we opened a charity shop in Kingston Road Portsmouth which was the first Rescued girls from left to right:Viorica, Cristina and Aurica in this area and already it has raised lots of money for Our factory the charity.

Green grants of up to £100,000 available for local businesses Councils in South Hampshire, including Havant Borough Council, are helping create jobs and helping businesses grow in the “Green Economy”. The Council is helping businesses in the “Green Economy” by supporting a scheme that provides grants of up to £100,000 but they should act now to find out if they could benefit from this significant funding.

Businesses in the area have already started benefiting, creating much needed local jobs. This includes a “green” medical research company, a company making revolutionary biodegradable packaging for ready meals, and a company producing LED lighting for motorways and for export to the Middle East.

The grants are being provided as part of the Future Solent Partnership for green economy businesses to take forward research and development projects and create jobs. The scheme is also helping businesses to access research and development facilities and networks in the Solent’s Universities. In addition, loans are now available for green economy businesses to help them expand and develop including proposals that are not based on research.

The ‘Green Economy’ is globally one of the fastest growing sectors and covers businesses in renewable energy, waste and recycling, energy efficiency / building retrofit

business, environmental research and management, environmental and clean technologies, and sustainable design and construction.

Future Solent is a joint initiative of the Partnership for Urban South Hampshire (PUSH – the organisation that coordinates the work of councils in South Hampshire) and the Hampshire Chamber of Commerce, working with Solent LEP (Local Enterprise Partnership) to support the creation of jobs and business growth in the low carbon and green economy in the Solent area.

New HISC Get Racing Club

builds momentum and delivers excellent results handling the boats in gusts.

Commenting on organizing the event, Andy Partington said, “It was great to see people improving with each race as they gained confidence and took on board some of the tips and techniques being suggested by the team of on-water helpers. We had a wide variety of boats and abilities but one common theme, lots of fun and smiles which was very rewarding!”

The HISC Get Racing Club format comprises a number of short, back-to-back races set within the harbour, either in members’ boats or the club RS Ventures, with pre and post event briefings, on the water mentoring and fun prize giving.

The aim of the club, to encourage more members to have a go at racing, was certainly achieved with a mix of participants including both those who were racing for the first time and others who had raced before but were looking to build their confidence.

Highly experienced HISC member, Andy Partington, and his team of equally experienced mentors, organized the second HISC Get Racing Event which enjoyed perfect weather conditions of 10-12 knots and some welcome sunshine.

A mixed fleet took to the water including RS Visions, Lasers, RS 200s, Qubas, Solos, RS Fevas and a number of the club RS Venture fleet. Andy and his team focused on giving advice and assistance on tacking/helm positions, start line timings and positions and

CAT & RABBIT RESCUE CENTER Hello, its me Giggles again the out and abouter reporter at CRRC. I woke up last Tuesday feeling so very sleepy, and found I was not curled up in the barn, but in a cage in the vets room.

Naomi, one of my staff said I had been a bit poorly, so the vet had a little look at me while I was asleep. I must have been alright as I am now back outside, and up to my old tricks. I have been sitting on top of the dustbin watching what has been going on indoors. Last night five little kittens were brought in without a mummy. S Some of them are being hand fed with a little syringe to make them better. One of them is weeny weeny, and I’m going to call him Balloola Bob. My staff are still trying to find their mummy, so next time I talk to you I will be able to tell you how they got on.

Lady - Cat of the Month This pretty girl is called Lady. She came into the centre in December 2013 after she lost her home when her owner moved into accommodation which didn’t allow cats. Lady is 12 years old and a quiet and sweet little cat who enjoys a cuddle. She is looking for a nice quiet home to settle down in ideally with no other cats.

MORE THAN A NORMAL BUFFET

Michael and his team at Aroma Havant have created an excellent reputation for quality oriental food we visited his restaurant one Thursday evening with the sole intention of sampling Aroma's eat-as-much-as-youlike Buffet Menu which is available Sunday to Thursday 5pm to 9pm.

This not the normal buffet style where you serve yourself - all dishes are freshly prepared and served to your table. The special menu has over 100 dishes - all the usual candidates are there but the joy of this style of eating is that you get a chance to sample the full range of oriental food available and its all individually prepared. It is really like an Oriental Tapas and I must say we

really enjoyed the evening - between our group of four we managed to taste 17 dishes from starter to dessert!

There are a few "stars" hidden in the menu - try one of Aroma's sizzling dishes "sizzling beef Cantonese style" is delicious.

Deep Fried Shredded chicken or Beef is really different mouth watering and the Chef's special Chow Mein is well worth looking for. The staff are very attentive and friendly - Stephen was our waiter and he provided us with superb prompt service and a lovely broad smile!

This restaurant was full when we left Michael recommends all customers to reserve a table in advance - "our buffet Menu is becoming very popular indeed - we try to create a relaxed atmosphere and a fine dining experience." We all agreed with his comments. The buffet menu is £15 per person (minimum of 2 people) children under 4'5" are half price and to maintain rapid service there is a 10% service charge.

A visit to the stylish Oriental restaurant is recommended but remember "book a table in advance."

THE COMMUNITY GIVES YOUNG ADULTS WITH LEARNING DIFFICULTIES A HELPING HAND By: Richard Hardcastle

A team of volunteers from a local business, The V Team, and young adults from Chaos Support came together for the second time in two weeks to plant seedlings and vegetables at Stones Allotment, New Lane, Havant. The event was organised by Community First HEH, with support from Asda Havant and Groundwork South. Janet Duggan,Volunteer Coordinator said “it has been an amazing two days with the volunteers transforming an over-grown allotment plot into a piece of land that is now growing vegetables. The young adults from Chaos Support who have learning difficulties, got involved and planted the herbs for the raised beds which they are hoping to build.

Seeing agencies and volunteers working together to help Chaos Support achieve their goal has been truly inspirational” Chaos Support are working towards growing vegetables to use in their cooking with the concept ‘plot to plate’ where the young adults will play an active part in maintaining the allotment, assisting with the cooking and giving any surplus produce to local community groups. The next phase for the allotment is to build some raised beds and have a decking

2014 is an important year as far as war anniversaries are concerned. Not only is it the hundredth year since the outbreak of the Great War, but it is also seventy years since the D-Day landings were launched, in June 1944. Of course it’s probably impossible to find anyone who remembers Havant in 1914. But there are still people alive today who can tell our generation of the hardships and sacrifices our parents and grandparents made, fighting the Nazis both at home and abroad. Sadly their numbers are slowly dwindling, and with that in mind we need to take every opportunity to tell their stories.

George Yalden was born in 1928 and apart from his own army service, has lived in the same Havant house all his life. The son of a Royal Navy stoker, a veteran of Jutland, the last great fleet action ever fought, George was an eleven year old pupil at Fairfield School when war broke

out, and particularly remembers the day that he was issued with his gas mask.

Suddenly things were starting to become deadly serious.

And while everybody remembers the cities such as Portsmouth and Southampton who were hardest hit during the Blitz, Havant had its fair share of bombs fall on it, including George’s uncle, whose house in Homewell was partially destroyed, and he also remembers a stick of incendiaries that hit Elmleigh Road.

‘So how do you think people today would cope with war time depredations?’

I ask him.

‘It was hard,’ he replies. ‘But you just had to be disciplined and we managed. I think it would come as a shock to people today, but I think they’d manage. They’d have to!’

‘And what do you think of Havant nowadays, with all the changes over your lifetime?’

‘I like it,’ he replies. And that’s the thing about George and his generation. They don’t need ten words when three will do.

They left that to the likes of Churchill and then got on with deadly serious business of defeating a vile and terrifying regieme.

Ooh Law Law Havant Criminal Lawyers shows French law students our courts Havant criminal defence solicitor Emma Smith of Swain & Co, meet French law students to show them Portsmouth Magistrates court and to talk about our criminal justice system. The French students were in Portsmouth for two days and wanted to learn about the way criminal cases are dealt with in England.

Emma Smith met the students after Swain & Co was selected by the French University as being expert in criminal defence work. Emma said, “I qualified as a solicitor in 2003 and have worked in a very wide range of cases, from murder to theft. I was able to brief the students on the way our courts work and to tell them few tales to keep them amused.”

Emma represents clients on a daily basis in the Magistrates Courts and at police stations throughout Hampshire.

Emma said, “It was a great opportunity for me to share my knowledge with law students that also to hear about the way things are done in France.

The main difference between and the French and English legal system is that in this country a decision to start criminal proceedings is made by the crown prosecution service in the UK. In France a member of the Judiciary makes that decision.

In the UK in the Magistrates court a Lay bench meaning people who are not legally qualified make sentencing decisions. They are assisted by a legal adviser. In France in the lower court decisions are made by Judges.

Award winning new business, Food Fiend Experience played host to the Mayor & Mayoress of Havant Cllr Paul and Mrs Jackie Buckley’s farewell dinner , where they invited the Harbour Mayor’s (Gosport, Portsmouth, Fareham), the Leader of Havant Council and Member of Parliament David Willetts MP. Kathy Fitchett, founder and Chef of this unique Hayling Island based new business, was one of the recipients of the business start-up grant from Deputy Mayor Paul Buckley when it was launched in September 2012.

The dinner was a Fusion Food ‘Come Dine with Me’ experience held in her beautiful private house. Kathy offers cookery demonstrations followed by a meal, a Chef on call service (for that special occasion), group cooking / eating experience, hands on cookery classes and one on one cooking lessons.

Kathy said ‘it was a privilege and honour to be asked to host this special dinner’.

After a short briefing there was a

demonstration in her state-of the-art kitchen. The guests enjoyed a Thai Fusion Noodle and Pork Spicy Salad, Moroccan main of Chicken and Pear Tagine with Green Beans, Butternut Squash and Chick Peas and desserts of Zesty Lemon Trifle and Nectarine Frangipane Tart.

Wonderful comments were received from the guests: ‘What a delicious meal, such a wonderful experience, so beautifully presented and served’. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance sets sail with inaugural regatta The inaugural Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Sailing Regatta will take place on Tuesday 23rd September and the charity are asking Hampshire businesses to join them for a fun and exciting day’s racing on the Solent.

Departing from Port Solent in Portsmouth, participants will sail with Sunsail Events on a fleet of Beneteau First 40 yachts, in the capable hands of fully qualified skippers. No previous sailing experience is necessary and all abilities will be catered for.

Local businesses already signed up for the regatta include BDO, Rathbone Brothers Plc, Brewin Dolphin and Bond Air Services. Also taking part on the day will be Marcus de Ferranti, the newly appointed Chairman of Trustees of Hampshire and Isle

of Wight Air Ambulance. De Ferranti commented ‘The regatta is a novel way to raise money for the Air Ambulance, and at the same time the perfect opportunity to entertain clients, network or just to thank staff.’

The cost of entry for the regatta is £2,000 per yacht for a crew of eight, to include a significant donation to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. Included in the entry fee is breakfast, a racing lunch and a champagne prize giving.

NEW HAVANT BOOK Havant and the Two World Wars Local historian, Ann Griffiths, has written two illustrated commemorative booklets about life in wartime Havant and the men behind the names on the Rolls of Honour. A highlight of the WW1 booklet is the story of Edward Till of Waterloo Road, who was injured by a shell in France and wrote a long and emotional poem about his personal war and the effect it had on him. This is published in full, with kind permission of his granddaughter.

Ann has tracked down numerous relatives of the men on the local Rolls of Honour and there is an account by John Dewhurst of the tireless work done in Havant throughout WW2 by his parents, Dr and Mrs Dewhurst.

Hazel Rollason tells of her work as a Wren driver for the 'Rendering Mines Safe' team,

which operated from West Leigh Cottage, and a nonagenarian tells of the run-up to D-Day, when the streets of Havant were crammed with troops. Lt Cdr John Ingram's daughter has provided material about her father, who rammed a Uboat while commanding HMS Oribi, the ship sponsored by the people of Havant.

Morris Dancers come to Hayling Island

Last summer, Customs And Exiles morris dancers spent a marvellous weekend on Hayling Island dancing our North West and Border morris at various pubs throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday lunchtime.

Langstone Technology Park Comes to the Rescue of Youth Cycling Club Langstone Technology Park (LTP) has given a lifeline to the Portsmouth School of Cycle Racing (P.S.o.C.R.) by offering one of the car parks at the business park to be used as a cycle training track, whilst their usual facility at the nearby Mountbatten Leisure Centre has been temporarily unavailable since March. www.psocr.com is the youth development arm of iTeam Cyclists' Club, which provides structured coaching programmes for youth and junior riders at grass roots level and has helped riders such as Dani King MBE, Jon Dibben and Joe Truman progress on to British Cycling's Olympic Development Plan.

Rowlands Castle Painting Society The Rowlands Castle Painting Society held their Reunion Silver Cup Awards evening which produced work of a high standard that didn't disappoint. A big vote of thanks went to David Hughes who put a lot of work into the event, who with his team of helpers ensured that everyone attending had a very enjoyable evening.

This is an occasion where members enter work into 15 different categories anonymously, which is then judged by all the members, to produce the eventual winners. The meticulous planning that goes into the evening results in every part of the evening flowing seamlessly from start to finish. Pat and Ian Hoper, along with Suzanne and Robert Hughes set out a lavish buffet and worked hard all night on the catering. John Richards and Elizabeth Hickman-Taylor were in charge of the refreshments, serving wine and soft drinks.

It all made for a really good evening.

Paddy Holmes, the patron of the Society presented the winners with their trophies and once again, the Society were most grateful for her continued support.

Sports Round-up Hockey Tim Randall Reports

Hawks end of Season Review The Hawks ended their 2013/14 season needing a victory in their last match against already relegated Tonbridge Angels. Despite missing a penalty, hitting the crossbar and having a goal disallowed the 0-0 result appeared enough to put the team into the Conference South Play-offs, with Kent rivals Dover Athletic drawing in their match. Sadly as the team waited on the pitch, news of an 87th minute converted penalty by Dover Athletic dashed their dreams. After limping out in the Semi-Finals of the FA Trophy to local rivals Gosport Borough this second nail in the heart was a bitter pill to swallow.

Thankfully after a superb but rain affected campaign, the team, Club and supporters still had the Final of The Hampshire Senior Cup at Fratton Park to look forward to. However, the Hawks late season Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde character was evident as they trailed Basingstoke Town by a two goal margin with just eight minutes to play. A spirited and valiant comeback took the match into extra-time with two late goals. With a penalty shootout looming a goal two minutes from time (against the run of play) sent the trophy to North Hampshire.

Last season this column followed the fortunes of Academy players who were training with the first team. We are pleased to report that two, goalkeeper Charlie Searle (aged 18) and midfielder Harry Wedlake (also 18) have just signed their first ever professional contracts with the Hawks. We will continue to follow

their progress as they strive to become fulltime professional footballers.

Finally, the Club is pleased to announce through this column some big-name preseason matches, all taking place at Westleigh Park. Premiership Side Crystal Palace has committed to playing the Hawks; also, Division Two, Portsmouth FC and AFC Wimbledon will visit with their full First Teams. West Ham United will send their development squad (Under 21’s) to test the new-look Hawks.

An amusing footnote from Ian Radford, Hawks stalwart Website Manager: ‘Little did I know that sitting down to watch the 1973 Grand National as an eight year old child would have such an impact on the rest of my life.

My chosen horse ‘Crisp’; a champion Australian chaser, rounded the final turn some 30 lengths clear of the field, a distance that had been reduced to 15 lengths at the final fence. The diminutive but wholehearted steed was chased down and caught by ‘Red Rum’ on the finish line to record the first of three Grand National victories (1973, 1974, 1977). This single event sowed the seeds for a successful seventeen year career as a bookie; a twenty six year spell as a compulsive gambler, and a glimpse into my future as a long-term fan of Havant & Waterlooville Football Club.’

Emsworth and District gives local swim club a free ride Youngsters at Havant and Waterlooville Swim Club (HWSC) were given free bus travel for their first-of itskind training camp on Saturday 24th May by kind sponsors at Emsworth District Motor Services.

HSWC is a team of dedicated young swimmers, aged between 9 and 17. They regularly travel to compete in top level regional and national competitions and this time it was the turn of HWSC’s younger squad, who are aged between 9 and 11, to take to the pool at the prestigious Crystal Palace long course training facility on 24th May. This was the first time the children had access to this type of session, which is important for helping develop their skills in the pool.

Havant’s Hockey Club’s 1st XI men’s team was relegated from the English Hockey League at the end of this season after 26 years in the League. Regrettably the Club’s objective of returning to EHL Premier Division is further away than ever.

The Club did win four of the Hampshire Cup finals on Hampshire Hockey’s “Hampshire Day” show-piece held at Bournemouth on Bank Holiday Monday 5 May. The 1st XI men, 2nd XI men, under 16 men and under 14 men, all won. The under 16 ladies finished runners up in the final of their competition.

Football Exhausted by a congested fixture list and plenty of excitement in League and Cup competitions, Hawks season finally ended in disappointment. (See Hawks end of season review in this edition.) Manager Lee Bradbury has wasted no time however in fine-tuning his squad for another tilt at promotion to the Skril Conference Premier League next season.

He oversaw a series of comings and goings at Westleigh Park within the first week of the last campaign ending. Long-term Hawks Jake Newton, Steve Ramsey and Eddie Hutchinson have all left the club.

Striker Bradley Bubb (25) has been signed from Aldershot and goalkeeper Ryan Young from AFC Telford (winners of this years Conference North title). Further signings are expected before the new season starts.

Rugby Havant Rugby Club’s first XV suffered a disappointing end to the season when they lost a closely fought Hampshire RFU’s Gales HSB Cup final at Basingstoke’s Pack Lane ground on 26 April. Old rivals Basingstoke from the higher National League 3, won 13 - 11 in extra-time.

Tim Randall’s Sports Comments There has been much comment recently about sports’ reporting culture following the exposure of gender discriminatory emails.

A national newspaper for example, recently devoted an entire column to this topic. Contents of recent sports pages display no articles on ladies sports; or female comment on sports.

In the sports pages of Postcode Newspapers we try to cover all aspects of sport within the community and welcome male and female contributions and comments.

England’s squad for the forthcoming World Cup in Brazil includes a number of talented young players from Premier League Clubs. Many see this as a brave move by England’s Manager Roy Hodgson.

The frequently asked question is of course, can England win the competition.

General informed opinion seems to indicate a quarter-final finish. This column supports that view, but like all England supporters, hopes that we surpass expectations by going deeper into the competition. Why however, is this unlikely? Sadly the overall technical skills of England’s best players generally are still some way behind those in teams such as Brazil, Spain, Germany and some African Nations.

Technical prowess is an essential prerequisite that provides the platform from which top players go on to express themselves and perform at superior levels both as individuals and as team members.

Thus the lack of technique means that current England players are unlikely to be able to perform on equal terms with technically superior players from other countries.

No matter how many different leagues might be introduced by the Football League, in England, until full attention is paid to the technical coaching and development of our most talented young players, it will not be possible to raise the level of performance of our best players to the point where they can compete on equal terms at the highest levels of World football.

In tennis Andy Murray, the British No.1, has said that he is not in any rush to announce his new coach to replace Ivan Lendl. He is likely to bring someone in during the forthcoming grass season at the earliest. There are not too many coaches with the credentials to work with Murray, but don’t be surprised if those he considers include Martina Navratilova or Amelie Mauresmo. Martina is one of Tennis’ most successful players of all time and as such could work with Andy.

Amelie is one of the few other master coaches currently available who could work with Andy at the level he requires.

Swimming Champion Oliver Jermy wins gold in British Championships Havant & Waterlooville Swimming Club’s 17-year old Ollie Jermy from Horndean, a next Commonwealth Games hopeful, scooped gold at the British Championships held in Glasgow from 9th13th July – he now stands to qualify for the Junior European Championships.

Ollie finished sixth in his heat, winning third fastest in the age 17-18 category. He clawed back to win gold after turning in 5th place on the breast stroke during his 400m Individual Medley (IM) final – with just 100 metres to go. He now faces a nailbiting wait to find out if he will be off to the Junior European Championships at the Optisport Swimming Stadium in Dodrecht in the Netherlands from 9 – 13 July.

Ollie has long been sponsored by top 25 UK accountancy firm, Wilkins Kennedy.

Rising stars shine in SouthEast Championships The Havant and Waterlooville Club also cleaned up at this year’s South-East Regional Swimming Championships in May, with one youngster in particular, 14 year old Katie Byrne from Waterlooville, coming out in front.

Katie had a six medal haul with two gold in the 200 Backstroke and 200 Freestyle events, two silver in the overall 14 years British Age Group Category (BAGCAT) and the 200m Individual Medley and then two bronze in the 100 Backstroke and 400 Individual Medley.

Katie wasn’t the only one bringing home medals for the HWSC team. The relay squad, which included Ollie Jermy, Will Stanhope, Dan Gilbert and James Faull, took home a silver medal in their 4x 200m freestyle relay race against seriously good opposition. The win also meant qualification for the national championships later in the year.

Katie’s medal wins at the Championships put her in the top three finishes for her club. Coach, Graham Pople, couldn’t be more pleased to share in Katie’s success.

“The youngsters who compete for HWSC work and train hard to move forward in their competitive edge and Katie

Hawks Bid for High Scoring Striker We are aware of news coming out of the city of Brighton that Hawks have made a five figure bid for Whitehawk FC’s striker, Danny Mills.

Whitehawk turned the offer down and their Manager Steven King has said he wants to keep his free scoring player who netted 21 goals last season; including one against Hawks in their FA Trophy match. In turning the offer down King said that if Mills should go he would like it to be to a professional team in a higher league.

This attempt shows the Club is fully backing its Manager Lee Bradbury to strengthen the squad next season as part of Hawks plans for a serious attempt to gain promotion.

Chris Wilkinson visited St John’s CEC Primary School, Rowlands Castle to officially open the Outdoor Learning Project (Part of the School Improvement Plan) and provide tennis-coaching advice to Year 5 pupils. Chris is a former British No1 Tennis player, TV commentator and National Performance Coach with the LTA. At Wimbledon Chris reached the 3rd round in Singles on 4 occasions and made the Doubles quarterfinals.

At a day of celebration at the school on 22nd May in front of an invited audience of sponsors and VIPs, the Anglican Bishop of Portsmouth blessed a new outdoor Worship Circle in the morning, before Chris Wilkinson officially opened the

Outdoor Learning Project in the afternoon. (£37,250 has been raised for the project so far, with a further £20,000 needed for the final phase).

After officially opening the project Chris (pictured above) played an exhibition match with School pupil Aaron Butcher, a talented 9-year-old tennis player who trains at the Portsmouth Tennis Academy, recently won an Under 12 tennis tournament in Australia and regularly plays in LTA tournaments. Typical of a nine year-old Aaron also plays and represents his school in cricket, football and tennis and is a member of Rowlands Castle Tennis Club.

Portsmouth Sitting Volleyball Club

Leigh Park residents map out their heritage Residents in Leigh Park are celebrating the end of a threeyear project chronicling the heritage of the housing estate from its early development in the 1940s right up to the present day. Local schools, community groups and members of the public have all contributed to the project, called ‘On The Street Where We Live’.

Launched in 2011 with a £50,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the project was originated by Lynne Dick, director of the charity craft organisation Making Space - which is based in Leigh Park - and John Griggs, former manager at Leigh Park Community Centre.

The idea was to engage local people of all ages in recording their memories, personal stories and experiences of the housing estate to help bring Leigh Park’s history and heritage to life.

The creation of a new large-scale map of the housing estate is one of the biggest legacies of the three-year project. It will be on permanent display at the Dickinson Centre at Park Community School after being on show in a celebration exhibition at Making Space from 17-24 May (11am-5pm), alongside other artwork made over the course of the project.

Director Lynne Dick said: “The generosity of local people has been truly amazing. To explore this urban and social history, and to celebrate this with local people, has been a real privilege for us.”

Other events during the ‘On The Street Where We Live’ project have included memory roadshows and reminiscence sessions, held in different areas of Leigh Park, at which residents talked about their experiences and swapped stories about living on the estate. Their video tells the story of why the heritage of Leigh Park matters to local people and why they feel happy and proud to live on the estate today.

A separate film features interviews with the local heroes and both videos will be available to view online and can also be seen at Making Space, Park Community School or borrowed as part of the memory boxes.

There are three forms of Volleyball; Volleyball, Beach Volleyball and Sitting Volley Ball. Although Volleyball and Beach Volleyball are widely known, Sitting Volleyball generally is not so well known.

It was with great interest that I visited Portsmouth Sitting Volleyball Club at the Mary Rose School in Gisors Road, Portsmouth, PO4 8GT, on 22 May for one of their Thursday evening training sessions.

Coach Brendan Williamson explained that although Sitting Volleyball is played by people with disabilities and by people that do not have disabilities. The key exception to this is at National Team and Paralympics levels where it is a requirement that all players must be people with disabilities.

At training there was a good mix of players, both male and female and people with and without disabilities. The game requires all to play and propel themselves in the seated position. Watching a game played it was clearly physically demanding, very technical, skilful and above all, exciting.

Portsmouth Sitting Volleyball Club plays in the National League and had a rollercoaster season. The League itself struggled following a drop in interest in sports for people with disabilities, following the massive high from the 2013 London Paralympics Games. There were just 6 teams in tact for the 2013/14 season.

Although under the new leadership of Richard Stacey-Chapman,Volleyball England are turning things around for Sitting Volleyball and the future looks brighter.

For this season, top four teams in the Sitting Volleyball National League would go through to the semi-final stage of the season, and this was the goal for the Portsmouth Club. Portsmouth finished fourth in the table to qualify for the semifinal stage, where they had possibly their best match of the season, losing to eventual championship winners Battleback..

Team member Charlotte Hughes was selected for the GB squad but this achievement was offset by a mid-season injuries to the Club’s Setter Tarnya Barrow and Hitter Steve Bailey, who were difficult to cover for.

The Club has recently recruited some new players having attended events at the Southsea Seaside and Rural show and at the Limb Power games, but are always looking for new players to join. The Club trains every Thursday night from 18.30 to 20.00 at the Mary Rose College on Gissors Lane, Milton and all are welcome. Sitting Volleyball is a fully inclusive sport played by teams with both men and ladies, with and without disabilities, forming part of league teams, although to qualify to play for the National Teams it is a necessary requirement to have a disability. Predominantly funded by Sport England, the new plan sees a focus on specific investment areas across England targeting 14-25 year olds to participate on a weekly basis. Cricket in the Community

The Waitrose Community Partnership Scheme has presented Havant Cricket Club with £510 towards junior cricket.

The Club offers junior cricket for boys and girls in the U9, U11, U13, and U15 age groups. Two dedicated training nights are held weekly alongside matches played in the South East Hampshire Leagues. The Club has many juniors playing at both a district and county level.

All junior cricket is run by qualified coaches, supported by enthusiastic volunteers.

There will be ‘Colts Day’ on Thursday 7 August in Havant Park, which provides an opportunity for juniors of all ages to play together. The club will also run “Summer Coaching Camps” from the 28 July – 22 August at Havant Park.

The Club has strong links within the community and local schools. Colts Coordinator Ron Hodgson, is involved in the “Chance to Shine” project in local schools and with England players, Charlotte Edwards and Heather Knight, will be visiting and helping in local schools, on 18 June at Bosmere, Trosnant, Bidbury, St.Albans and St.Johns Rowlands Castle.

Mike Plollard from the Hampshire Cricket Board will join the group for the afternoon. The Club has twice been awarded the ECB’s ‘Clubmark’ and has declared its intention this summer to become one of the only clubs in the county to have received this award for a third time. WARBLINGTON SCHOOL Exciting Activities on the Isle of Wight Realising potential: unlocking success

Rock Challenge 2014 The UK Rock Challenge is the British arm of the Global Rock Challenge. The Rock Challenge takes the form of a friendly performing arts competition for schools and colleges.

This years’ Rock Challenge was a huge success for Warblington School. We had a new team with performers and back stage crew who have never been involved in an event of this scale, competing against eleven experienced teams on the night, some with older students.

Warblington opened the show on the first night of the Portsmouth heats at the Guildhall. The title of our piece was ‘Split’, which explored the concept of split personality, the issues that arise and the constant inner struggle that a person with this disorder has to deal. For the eight minute piece, students collaborated to create the costumes, make up, set,

music and choreography. The students were a credit to the school. Their behaviour, conduct and commitment to the day and each other was outstanding. We came away with an Award of Excellence and Best Soundtrack. We are really looking forward

to the next one in 2016!

From Friday 9th to Monday the 12th of May Year 7 and 8 Warblington students went to Little Canada on the Isle of Wight.

Amazing food, amazing activities, amazing people! On this residential the students participated in team and confidence building activities, which came in the form of climbing, abseiling, dragon boat racing, Jacob’s ladder, scavenger hunts and many many more.

The students’ behaviour was outstanding throughout the whole of the trip.

They made new friends and memories. Many of them gained personal achievements: Tom Benfield was first to go on the giant swing by himself all the way to the top!

Morgan Rixon, though terrified of the smugglers tunnels to begin with, ventured into the dark! Richard Mann showed amazing skill and intelligence in the Matrix!

The children worked together amazingly well in Jacob’s ladder and supported one another in more challenging activities such as abseiling. The evening activities were

enjoyed by all the students, especially robot wars and the disco! Our PGL groupie made us all feel very welcome and the students responded to him really well, he even helped them to victory in the dragon boat racing! It was an extremely successful weekend. I hope the Year 7s return next year and encourage more friends to come along too!

TECH CORNER There’s a certain charm to playing an old games console. It takes you back to the heady days of blocky graphics, and shifting scenery. I had honestly forgotten about vehicles disappearing randomly in games like GTA San Andreas.

And yet those of us who remember taking it out of the case with shaky fingers, and placing it gently in the PS2 or XBox so as not to scratch it; we thought it was remarkable. And while it has noticeably aged, the game play is still as enjoyable as it always was - perhaps more so. Of course the storyline and game-play won’t be to everyone’s taste. The game has been accused of everything from stereotyping women and ethnic minorities, to promoting violence and even spawning real-life copycat incidents.

But, then great literature, too could be accused of exactly the same crime. And while I’m not for a minute suggesting that the bloody end scene in Hamlet has exact parallels to GTA, in terms of historical importance; it could be argued that it is the Hamlet of computer games. |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

BOOK REVIEW

Caribbean is the latest historical thriller to follow the exploits of Thomas Kydd, by acclaimed writer Julian Stockwin.

Starting as a pressed man, Kydd has risen to command the frigate HMS L’Aurore, though the crew fondly refer to her as Billy Roarer. Having been forged in the great battles of the Nile and Trafalgar, Kydd’s new mission is to scour the Caribbean for any signs of French commerce raiders.

All-in-all this is an excellent entry to a solid series of books, which often centre around historical Portsmouth, and I highly recommend it.

Wilfy Williams

Wilfy Williams is a man on the up.You’ve probably never heard of Wilfy, but he was once a familiar sight busking in Southsea and Havant.

Forged in the crucible of Portsmouth acts Daily and The Fret, culminating in The Fret being hand-picked to play the after=show party after the Happy Mondays’ Brixton gig, during their reformation tour.

However Williams was devastated in 2008 by the sudden death of Fret front man, Deano Clark, an event that still resonates with him to this day.

But you can’t keep a good man down, and resolving to make his name in the music business, he applied for and was accepted by the British Academy of New Music to study music editing and performing. And it was there that he made a decision that would lead to the next stage of his life when he auditioned to be an official busker on London Underground. Impressing them with his enormous repertoire of popular songs, he was immediately given a license, and is now one of their most popular buskers, playing to thousands of commuters every week.

Wilfy doesn’t just play other people’s songs though. He is a talented and prolific singer/songwriter in his own right. His influences include The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors and Nirvana, although his folky, soft-rock vibe is entirely his own.

And that is not the only string to this talented musician’s, bow. By night he can be found in top London clubs, DJ’ing with such luminaries as former Libertines Pete Doherty and Carl Barat. And when Noel Gallagher was looking for a DJ to perform at the after-show of his High Flying Birds tour, Wilfy Williams got the gig.

So when I say Wilfy Williams is a man on the up, you don’t have to take my word for it. Recently Radio One came calling, and Wilfy performed for the nation on the influential unassigned slot, and no doubt this is just the beginning. Wilfy is now working on his first album, and his debut single, Nicola is available to download on all eplatforms.

Havant MP, David Willetts wishing Jonathan Cheshire a happy retirement.

Jonathan Cheshire is one of those people who David Cameron had in mind when he launched his ‘Big Society’ initiative, soon after taking office.

He is the epitome of the self-made man who would have flourished in any industry that he chose. Although he does admit that he came to charity and social care work as part of the counter-culture, not as a considered choice. “In London there were so many empty council houses, and instead of letting them go to waste, a few of us arranged for groups of squatters to move in. Somehow we organised ourselves into a housing association; although I still don’t quite know how that came about, and things just took off from there” said Jonathan.

Indeed they did. In 1989, Jonathan became chief executive of the Ocean Youth Club, then Europe’s largest charitable sail training organisation. Then in 1996, along with David Harris he founded Portsmouth Foyer, an organisation which supports young people with urgent housing needs in Portsmouth.

In 1998 he moved to pastures new, and while searching for premises for a new project, he found what he was looking for in an office complex in Southampton: Wheatsheaf House, and The Wheatsheaf Trust was born.

Now with offices all over southern Hampshire, The Wheatsheaf Trust helps job seekers to maximise their potential and gives help and support in what can be a very frustrating and anxious process. They also run courses for people on ESA, which has superseded Incapacity Benefit, to give them the extra aid that people in their situation need to become job ready. This can include classes in building confidence, interview techniques and communication, as well as practical help with the now essential need for IT skills that employers demand.

‘We prefer a more person cantered approach when it comes to dealing with our clients. Massive government contracts are all well and good for some companies,

but I don’t see money as the be all and end all, and our approach reflects that.’

“So what are your plans, now that you’re retiring after such an active life?” I asked. “I’m only retiring from paid work,” he jokes; though actually, he’s completely serious.

Jonathan will remain as non-executive chairman of Southampton Solent University and is getting involved with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation, which makes grants to local good causes. In addition to that, he will continue in his role as a trustee of the Association of Sail Training Associations, as sailing remains a real passion.

The Rt Hon David Willetts MP came along to Wheatsheaf’’s office at Strouden Court because he recognises the help that Jonathan and his organisation have given to the people of Havant over the years.

“Jonathan has done a fantastic job over many years, helping dozens, if not hundreds in my own constituency back into work.

Why today, I met a lady who was getting a basic introduction to computing, and saw for myself exactly the type of services that Wheatsheaf offers. And I want to wish Jonathan a long and happy retirement with his family.”

‘So, do you have any regrets, looking back, maybe things you might have done differently?’ I asked.

“Not really,” Jonathan replied with a smile. “I’m leaving the Wheatsheaf Trust in the very capable hands of Dan Freshwater, (the newly appointed Chief Executive) and it’s time for him to take the organisation and shape it to meet the needs of the next generation.”

Which seems to me to be an excellent attitude to life in general, and is perhaps why Jonathan has succeeded so brilliantly in what he does.

Havant Lawyers back Wig Wednesday

Lawyers at Havant solicitors Swain & Co do not wear wigs for Court but donned wigs on Wednesday to support Wig Wednesday to raise money for children and young people with Cancer(CLIC Sargent).

The aim was to show support for the children and young people who are losing

their hair as a result of Cancer, and to join in on Wig Wednesday by getting friends and colleagues together to wear a wig and raise money for CLIC Sargent.

Lawyers who were thin on top were joined by younger staff eager to gain a new look with a change of style or colour. Some were barely recognisable in their wigs. Others were impossible to recognise.

Havant solicitor, Kelly Evans said, “We were interviewing to recruit new staff and were not sure whether to take our wigs off during the interviews, to invite applicants to wear a wig and get into the spirit of things or simply go for it and interview with our wigs on. In the end we decided to show a more professional appearance during the interviews and to wear our wigs during the rest of the day.”

Hayling Island has once again been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag for 2014, for the 23rd year running.

The stretch of beach from the Fun Fair to the border of the golf club has been awarded the flag by the Keep Britain Tidy campaign. The award recognises clean and safe stretches of coastline that promote environmental education and offer excellent visitor facilities.

The criteria to qualify for a Blue Flag include the provision of first aid facilities, clean toilets, recycling facilities and access for disabled visitors. The water is continuously tested

skin. We feel happier, more energised and healthier when we’re sun-kissed. However, before we expose ourselves to those UV rays we need to make sure we’re protecting our skin!

What are UV rays?

Ultraviolet radiation is a form of energy that comes from the sun. It is composed of various wavelengths of light that penetrate the Ozone layer and Earth’s surface. Exposure to some forms of UV radiation (UVA/UVB) has been reported to be a major risk factor in cases of skin cancers. Long term exposure can harm the skins DNA and damage collagen fibers advancing the signs of aging. Premature wrinkling is common in those who have been exposed to the sun over long periods of time, as are age spots and uneven complexions. UV radiation can cause cataracts and weaken the immune system.

Who’s at risk?

Everyone. People with fairer skins are more likely to suffer damage from sun exposure but even people with darker skins need to take measures to protect themselves. Skins that have been burnt before, even in childhood, will be particularly sensitive to exposure.

Protecting ourselves - Sunscreen When purchasing a sunscreen product you should think of it as an investment. The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a measure of a sunscreen's ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin. How it works: If it takes 20 minutes for your unprotected skin to start turning red, using an SPF 15 product should prevent reddening 15 times longer (about five hours).

The higher the SPF, the higher percentage of protection against UVB rays.

Sunscreen works best once absorbed so apply it around 20 minutes before heading outdoors and reapply regularly (every two

hours) especially when swimming or perspiring. *Tip – Remember to protect your lips by applying a lip balm with an SPF of 15 or higher.

• Cover up Hats can protect the scalp, ears and hairline and shade the eyes from sunlight. Tightly-woven clothing helps deflect UV rays better than thin cotton.

• Sunglasses Plastic lenses that offer 100% UV protection are the best choice. Forget worrying about ‘panda eyes’ and remember you’re preventing the risk of cataracts in later life.

Sunglasses also protect the delicate skin around the eyes from premature wrinkling.

• Avoid midday sun The sun’s rays are strongest between around 10.30am and 3.30pm so avoid being exposed during this time. If you are outdoors cover up, apply sunscreen and try and stay in the shade where possible.

• Glow Safe If you have a fair complexion your skin contains fewer pigment producing cells which means you’re unlikely to achieve a tan. Why traumatise your skin trying when there are so many healthier options available?

Remember that you can achieve a ‘Faux Glow’ without any damage to your skin!

Apply a gradual tan moisturiser each evening and not only will you be glowing but you will have avoided the painful effects of the sun including soreness, luminescent red skin and the dreaded peeling.

It’s not all bad - Benefits of sunshine Sunlight can help heal psoriasis.

With protection applied, exposure to sunlight is extremely beneficial for individuals with psoriasis.

Sunlight can ease mild depression.

There has been a lot of research on the link between sunlight and our moods. Studies have found that sunlight actually increases levels of a natural antidepressant in the brain. On sunny days, the brain produces more of the moodlifting chemical serotonin than on darker days.

Sunlight contributes to bone health in older adults.

Our skin contains a cholesterol substance called provitamin D3 that reacts with the UVB rays in sunlight to form vitamin D3.Vitamin D stimulates the absorption of bone-strengthening calcium.

Sunlight can improve sleep quality When sunlight hits your eyes, your optic nerve sends a message to the gland in the brain that produces melatonin (a hormone that helps you sleep); the gland decreases its secretions of melatonin until the sun goes down again. In other words, exposure to sunlight during the day increases the natural production of melatonin at night. Low levels of melatonin production are linked to poor sleep quality, especially in older adults.

How Motiv8 supports young people of Hayling Island 3 different services which are free for young people

The recent YouTube viral sensation ‘Look Up’ is the inspiration for this piece and if you haven't already seen it, I strongly urge you to. The videos message is a harrowing and much needed reminder to everyone the negative impact of a world that thrives and functions off technology.

Now, as tech-savvy teenager of the 21st century, I am all too guilty of spending every minute of the day either on my smartphone, tablet or laptop, favouring social networking sites over face-to-face conversations.

But after watching this video, it made me consider the extent to which people rely on technology.

A quick glimpse at my college

café verified my concerns, and saddened me to see on every table, people with their heads down, eyes glued to a screen, not content with each other's company. It made me realise that every second spent staring at that screen was second of letting the world go by. I wonder how many laughs, stories, and new memories that could have been shared if everybody just switched their phone off for just a moment.

So, I've decided to set myself a challenge. I'm going to spend 30 days social network free...

I'm not going to lie, it's going to be tough, but I'm ready for the exciting opportunities that I might have normally missed. I'll let you guys know how I got on next time.

Motiv8 holds a weekly youth club session at Hayling Community Centre on a Wednesday evening, offering a wide range of Motiv8 activities. Recently, Peter Paulton of Havant Rotary kindly donated a pool table, and Rotary are keen to support young people’s work on the island.

The CHIFY (Confidential Health Information For You) young people's health drop-in now offers 2 sessions a week, in Hayling College on a Tuesday and at the Community Centre on a Wednesday before the regular youth club. This service offers a variety of confidential health-related support.

Employment advice and guidance is available to Hayling young people age 16 to

24 on an appointment basis, and they can access this through the youth club sessions or by calling or texting 07980 903503.

Motiv8 is also involved in the planned extension to Hayling Community Centre as they apply to the Lottery for funds to expand the provision to include more space for young people.

Hayling Island is hosting a Community Alcohol Project over the summer months, designed to address alcohol misuse by young people and Motiv8 is working in partnership with Havant Borough Council, Hayling College, local police, traders associations and other agencies to arrange activities and get the message out to young people.

Summer fete which is being held at the tearooms in West Street, Havant, in aid of the 'Help for Heroes' charity, on the 16th August.

The wool was supplied by the tearooms and the knitters have produced about 50 tea cosies in all, in the Help for Heroes colours. A member of the group said 'we have really enjoyed this challenge – we get great pleasure from doing it – the most surprising thing is that there is not one cosy exactly the same as another'.

Home Buying Survey First time house buyers in PO postcodes are missing out on buying their dream homes as they continue to save large mortgage deposits.

A survey by One Poll - commissioned by housebuilder Barratt Homes, has revealed that more than 60% of first time buyers believe they need to save more than a 20% deposit when in reality they need just 5% with Help to Buy. The report highlights that buyers continue to be misguided and believe that substantial deposits are needed when buying a property.

Barratt sales director Michelle Storer said. “The government’s Help to Buy scheme has been in place for a year and while it has been hugely popular our findings show that

many potential home-buyers are still missing out on the opportunity to buy their dream home.” In addition to this, the survey also highlighted that almost half of first time buyers were still under the impression that renting a property is cheaper than owning your own house and paying a mortgage.

“This is another misconception,’’ said Michelle. “Latest figures from the Halifax calculated the monthly mortgage on an average three-bed home in the UK is now £600, 16% cheaper than the £716 it would cost to rent the same type of property.’’

“At Barratt we want to help more first time buyers purchase their own properties and get their first foot onto the housing ladder by introducing them to the Help to Buy scheme and talking to them about the benefits of owning your own property as opposed to renting.” said Michelle.

One again the Garden Show Team staged a spectacular show at Stansted in June. Fine weather dampened for a short spell of rain, brought out the crowds to throng the Garden Show where many stallholders displayed their goods to eager buyers.

The Meeting Place in Waterlooville is one of the community centres used by Motiv8 and it was identified as being very run down and needing exterior redecoration. The team of ten Fasset volunteers undertook the project on Friday 16th May 2014 using materials either provided by themselves or supplier contacts.

In just one day the exterior of the building was transformed.

Sandie Davis, Havant Service Manager Motiv8 said: “We had an amazing day at the Meeting Place, luckily the sun was shining and the team managed to transform the outside of the building. The number of people and resources available meant we could achieve an enormous amount on one day, something we could never manage ourselves. We had some young people making a contribution and the experience they got from working with the volunteering team was really valuable.

Fasset Volunteers Transform Community Building for Young Persons Charity Motiv8 A team from Havant based facilities management company Fasset, has undertaken a community volunteering project for the charity Motiv8 and transformed a community building in Waterlooville.

Business in the Community (BITC) and Motiv8 had identified this need in the community and Fasset committed to it as their ‘Give & Gain Day’ project.

BITC launched their ‘Give & Gain Day’ initiative six years ago and have encouraged over 12,000 employees across the UK help communities through skill swapping, volunteering and investment with hundreds of projects like this happening on one day of the year.

Motiv8 is an independent, Hampshirebased charity, whose goal is to improve the life chances of young people by reducing the risk of offending, anti-social behaviour and disengagement from learning and employment. The charity works through a network of community based teams and volunteers providing open access, targeted and intensive services for individuals and groups. They also deliver Group Programmes in partnership with schools

one day. The centre is obviously a beacon in the community, giving young people a place to go and someone to talk to. I hope that our efforts will encourage more young people to use it and take responsibility in keeping it looking great. Give & Gain gave us the opportunity to really make a difference but it’s Motiv8 who do the hard work - hats off to them.”

Mill Rythe Primary Starts Junior Jounalists Club We asked children to suggest names and chose “The Mill Rythe Fiver” , or The Fiver for short. With the help of Mrs Cox, the school Admin Officer, the Journalists Club is publishing a new edition every half term, covering everything from interviews with teachers and members of staff, accounts of recent trips and stories written by the children to puzzles and surveys. There is certainly never a shortage of things to write about!

Young Hayling Reporters find their Voice Schools are busy places and it is always great to be able to share some of the exciting events that take place through publications such as PO9 and PO11.

Children in the Year 6 Journalist Club at Mill Rythe Junior School, Hayling Island have had experience of writing articles in their Literacy lessons and for publication in local papers, and so we decided to go one step further and set up our own school newspaper.

Buried in the past Last half term,Year 4 visited the stately Highclere Castle to find out more about the Egyptians. The pupils had a really good time, although the replica of Tutankhamen’s old body scared everyone as they thought it

was really realistic.Yasmin thought the day was ‘epic!’

Everyone had a chance to look at artefacts to learn about life in Egyptian times. The children had thought it would be quite boring, with fake artefacts, but they were in for a surprise. They told us that they were amazed to see all the real items.

Evie said, “It was awesome!” Miss Gray loved it too, and would have liked to have spent more time there, looking at the precious objects.

One of the most exciting parts of the trip was the dark room. There were little flaps leading to a tomb so as they looked inside they could see all the golden treasure in it, just like Tutankhamen’s tomb. All in all they had a phenomenal trip, and hope to go back another day.
