Postcode Publications were pleased to respond to a request for help with providing food preparation equipment to the Squirrels Daycare centre in the Acorn Centre in Eagle Avenue at the Wecock Farm estate.

Pre-school children can now enjoy hot toasted sandwiches, milk shakes or Smoothies, to help them enjoy their time at the Breakfast Club. The children and

staff were exited to receive a cheque from Alan Westbrook - pictured above, that provided for equipment purchase and a contribution towards food costs.

The Centre relies on donations as they are not funded from any other means.

Anything that anyone can do to contribute to the vital work carried out by staff at the Centre, would be most welcomed.

New Tenants move into Berewood Last year, Postcode Publications reported that Grainger had launched The Grainger Trust, which will manage the homes for affordable rent within Berewood.

Grainger is delighted to announce that we have appointed Bill Flood as the Project Director of The Grainger Trust and in January 2014 our first tenants moved in.

Bill, who has worked in housing for over 20 years has extensive experience of both housing and local authorities, will now manage the Grainger Trust operations. His role will be to ensure that the key values of Grainger Trust – creating a great place for people to live both now and long after the development has been completed – will be implemented and maintained.

Bill commented, “I am really excited to be taking on this role, and to bring the core values of Grainger Trust to light at Berewood. Our aim is to commit to issues that matter most to residents, namely repairs, maintenance and tackling anti-social behaviour, and dealing with these issues quickly and efficiently. We are a firm but fair landlord and believe strongly in being a landlord for all our residents, all of the time.

A particular priority is tackling anti-social behaviour and rent arrears speedily. By dealing with these issues quickly and efficiently, we will be able to focus on all our residents, rather than use most of our time on the most demanding residents.

“The community is at the heart of Grainger’s scheme at Berewood. As the development is built in phases, a pivotal part

of the success of the scheme is the integration in the community. Last year we held a Christmas Carol Celebration in partnership with the Berewood Community Ministry, Bloor Homes and Havant and Winchester Council. This was a great success”.

Earlier this year, the first set of keys to The Grainger Trust properties were handed over. The Grainger Trust board went down to down to Berewood to welcome the new tenants.

Deborah Shackleton, Chair of Grainger Trust commented, “It was a real pleasure to meet the first residents of Grainger Trust at Berewood and welcome them into their new homes. We look forward to working with Sara and Luke who we met, other new residents and the growing community at Berewood for many years to come.

Housebuilder for ‘Green Heart’ of Berewood Announced More exciting news from Grainger this month as we can announce that the housebuilder for the second phase of homes at Berewood will be Redrow Homes.

This second phase is located towards the southern end of the site with Milk Lane acting as an access point. Redrow Homes will deliver 250 homes, 40% of which will be managed by Grainger Trust, as well as infrastructure that will service the housing plots, including improvements to the Milk Lane and London Road junction. Work on site will begin next year and the location of phase two means that the construction work will not overlap with phase one, where work is already underway, at the northern end of the site.

The plot for phase two sits within the ‘Garden Suburb’ section of Berewood, where house styles reflect the traditional ‘arts and crafts’ style of the original garden

suburbs. This means that simple designs, natural materials and green spaces will be a priority, with landscaping and tree planting taking place. The plot will be surrounded on three sides with woodland and open space and will unlock the land which will become the town park – the ‘green heart’ of Berewood.

HEADTEACHER APPOINTMENT FOR BEREWOOD PRIMARY SCHOOL The University of Chichester Academy Trust (CAT) has announced that Mrs Sue Patrick, B.Ed has been appointed as Headteacher of Berewood Primary School, the new-build academy due to open next September to the west of Waterlooville in Hampshire.

Mrs Patrick currently leads Jessie Younghusband School in Chichester, an Ofsted “Outstanding” primary school, where she has been Headteacher for seven years. She has previously taught in two other schools in the Chichester area and worked as a Numeracy Consultant for West Sussex. Prior to that she taught on the Isle of Wight and in schools in Lewisham and Peckham in south London.

Academies Director Dr Alan McMurdo said: "We are delighted that Sue Patrick is joining the University of Chichester Academy Trust team and heading up our first ‘new build’ academy. Berewood Primary School opens in September 2014 and this is the vital first step in putting in place a great leadership team to oversee

Check Your Flood Crookhorn College - Fire Service Leadership Day Risk Online Students from Crookhorn College were Meon Valley MP George Hollingbery is urging residents threatened with flooding in the constituency to access a new flood map online.

The Environment Agency has published new and improved information about flood risk which is available at: www.environment-agency.gov.uk/flood People can check their flood risk and find out what they can do to be better prepared for flooding.

“Residents in Rowlands Castle and Hambledon were hit by surface water flooding last year - so the issue is very much a live one in the constituency and across Hampshire even though it has been quite dry of late”, George explained.

"This is really is the latest information about flood risk from rivers and the sea, reservoirs and surface water so I hope residents will have a look online and see if there is any risk to their property," he said.

given the chance to spend a day at Havant Fire Station where they took part in activities that encouraged them to be positive and motivated leaders in the future.

The day consisted of interactive sessions where students were asked to consider what leadership qualities are important to them and suggest people whom they consider to be good leaders.

The students were then given a series of tasks to complete throughout the day which challenged their strengths and leadership skills; including climbing a 14metre ladder!

Free Your Feet The college recently ran a competition in conjunction with the charity ‘Living Streets’ (http://www.livingstreets.org.uk).

A week of assemblies with a central theme of walking as part of a healthy lifestyle took place. These were given by Helene Corkery from the charity.

Students were then invited to record the number of minutes they walked each day. All their entries were placed in a prize draw.

Abbie-Mai Wright pictured below was the luck recipient of £50 worth of high street vouchers. Abbie said this was excellent timing in the run up to Christmas, but was not yet sure what she would spend the money on.

Postcode Publications HAMPSHIRE & ISLE OF WIGHT AIR AMBULANCE BAG A BRA DAY 2014 Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance have announced that Bag a Bra day 2014 will take place on 22nd May and are asking supporters to save any unwanted bras for recycling, in order to raise vital funds to keep the Air Ambulance flying and saving lives. Now in its fifth year, this highlight of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance fund-raising calendar takes place in May every year and generates a significant amount of donated bras, whilst raising awareness for the charity’s on going recycling campaign.

All donated bras are collected by Bag It Up, the charity’s recycling partner, and shipped to West Africa for resale at affordable prices by street traders.

Being able wear a bra gives women status and helps to improve their self-esteem; two very emotive reasons for donating an unwanted bra or two.

John Perry, Chief Executive, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance commented; ‘By recycling unwanted bras, you are helping us not only to save lives across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, but

also to enable individuals abroad to buy affordable bras.’

Unwanted bras can be collected in one of the charity’s special pink ‘Bag a Bra’ bags and then placed in a charity textile recycling bank. HAYLING BILLY BOOK ON SALE November 2nd marked the fiftieth anniversary of the last public train service of the Hayling Billy. For many people today the memory of riding behind the Terrier engines on their way for a day on a sandy beach is something they cannot forget. The journey was a treat in itself especially the excitement of going over the bridge and probably throwing stones in to the sea below. Proof of this nostalgia was shown when an estimated

1,000 people attended a recent commemorative exhibition at the Spring Arts and Heritage Centre in East Street, Havant, to see a wide range of pictures, models and other memorabilia. As part of this celebration Ralph Cousins has produced a booklet containing over 130 illustrations entitled ‘The Hayling Island Branch line’ at the modest price of £5 which may be obtained at the Centre.’

Smile Support & Care receives glowing inspection report Local charity, Smile Support & Care, has received ‘The CAT Mark’ an official stamp of approval for young people’s services from 4Youth.

The charity, based in Eastleigh, provides respite care to disabled children and young adults across Hampshire and West Sussex.

The CAT Mark is a mark of quality, awarded by young people, for any organisations providing services to young people. CAT Mark assessors are young people themselves aged between 13 and 21 who understand the needs of young people.

They use this knowledge to assess the services that are designed for them.

The award involves the assessment services, organisations and projects against set criteria: • Involving young people • Equal opportunities • Links to other services • Environment and resources (including keeping young people safe) 4Youth say “being awarded a CAT Mark shows a commitment to providing a good quality service, which successfully meets the need of all young people and are young person friendly”.

The CAT Mark is a very special recognition to achieve, as it is awarded by the very people for whom the service is delivered. The CAT Mark is a recognised award of good practice across Hampshire.

Ally Lee-Dudley, Chief Executive from 4Youth came in to Smile’s Headquarters in Eastleigh to make a special presentation of the award in December.

Area Manager Julie Bishop said “We are so pleased to achieve this award as it recognises our commitment to young people’s services and very importantly is assessed by young people themselves” In addition to Smile’s day-to-day respite work, the charity is also fund-raising to build a short-break centre in Hampshire to enable disabled youngsters to enjoy a break away. The build is now well under-way, but funds are still needed to help develop the centre. There are many opportunities to support the development.

Christingle Service In December Hayling College hosted their annual Christingle Service for which the Year 2's and 3's of the Island's primary schools congregated in the sports hall and lit candles.

Prior to the service, pupil representatives of The Hayling College visited the Primary schools to give a brief description of the Christingle’s and explained the meaning behind the service

itself, then handed out small candle shaped money banks in which the children collected money for a children's charity, raising money for children less fortunate than themselves.

When the celebration commenced, the pupils and teachers lined the walls of the sports hall holding lit Christingle’s. It was a heart-warming experience that emphasised the unity of the Island's schools.

THE SAMARITANS AT CHRISTMAS

Samaritans’ Portsmouth branch on London Road prepared for a busy time this Christmas and was fully staffed over the

festive period to help cope with the 15,000 calls a day that Samaritans expected to receive on its national helpline from people in the UK and ROI. The Portsmouth branch answered 40,000 calls for help last year and many of its 90 volunteers were on duty over Christmas answering calls round the clock from people struggling to cope.

Christmas Day was the 25th year that Chris Trevellick, has spent volunteering for Portsmouth Samaritans. Chris is now retired and married with two children.

Chris said: “When I started volunteering in 1988 I wanted to 'give something back' my own life was going well, and I was in a fortunate place.

“I have wonderful family and friends, but I’ve always been aware of the pressures on

people who might not be able to share problems with others. This made me realise that maybe I could be there for them at times like those.

“Christmas can increase feelings of loneliness, people may be in 'strained' family situations, may have overspent, they might have all the usual issues plus many more.

“For most of our shifts, we are very busy answering calls and emails, and it is a privilege to be there for people.

“After my shift on Christmas Day, I was fortunate that I could go back to my family and celebrate. But that isn’t the case for everyone and those precious few hours of being there for others at Christmas is my way of trying to make their day a little less unhappy.”

Stephen Hoddell, Chair of Samaritans,

said: “Christmas can be an incredibly difficult time and we want to let people know that Samaritans is here if things are getting to them. When many other services shut down for the holidays, our volunteers continue to be available, answering calls round the clock.

Thank you to every single person who is spent Christmas volunteering; you are inspirational.”

GRANTS TO VOLUNTARY GROUPS Community First HEH in partnership with Havant Borough Council’s Community Team has secured a grant to fund small local groups. Grants up to £500 will be awarded to voluntary groups, as voted for by local residents. Residents are invited to attend four Market Place events that will take place across the Borough. At the events members of the public will be given the opportunity to meet the local groups before making their vote. The events will be held at: Emsworth Community Centre on Wednesday 5th March 4pm-6pm Hayling Island United Reformed Church Wednesday 12th March 4pm-6pm Leigh Park Community Centre Monday 17th March 3pm-5pm Springwood Community Centre Thursday 20th March 3pm-5pm The application process is now open and will run until Friday 21st February 2014.

Forms and help with applications are available from Community First HEH. A total of £21,000 is available and has been secured by Community First HEH and Havant Borough Council’s Community Team from Hampshire County Council’s ‘Have your Say’ fund.

Postcode Publications Join Arthur’s Adventurers and help them Pay for a Day at Chestnut Tree House

Arthur Waymark, aged nine months from Emsworth, was born in April 2013.

When he was just two days old he had his first seizure and this was the beginning of a long and difficult journey for his parents, Gareth and Lora, and their friends and family. Arthur has now sadly been diagnosed with a very rare and life-limiting epileptic syndrome called ‘Migrating Partial Epilepsy in Infancy’ or MPEI and he will only live a very short life.

Arthur’s family have met a lot of amazing people along their journey but for them it is Chestnut Tree House, the only children’s hospice in Sussex, that really stands out. Lora, Arthur’s Mum, tells her story of how Chestnut Tree House has shone a light on what seemed to be a very dark and gloomy prognosis for Arthur.

Said Lora, “Arthur's initial diagnosis was very bleak and we were devastated.

However, the staff at Chestnut Tree House

have helped us to stay positive and focus on giving Arthur the stimulation he needs to enjoy his life. The hospice, with their amazing, dedicated and specialist staff, will care for and support Arthur, myself and our family throughout his short life. They won’t ask for any money and they will be there no matter what in whatever situation we need them. This is why they are such a lifeline to us.

“It costs £6,850 a day to provide all the specialist care at Chestnut Tree House, both at the hospice and out in the community across East and West Sussex and South East Hampshire. The hospice receives less than 8% funding from central government to help cover this cost and therefore relies heavily on the generosity, help and support of the local community. Many of our friends, family and colleagues have said that they would like to support us and help raise money for Chestnut Tree House and so that’s when we decided to ‘Pay for a Day’.

“While all direct donations will be greatly received by the charity, what we would really like is for those who wish to support us, to get active and do something to raise the money, making special memories for yourself as well has helping this fantastic cause.

“You could do a sponsored run, walk or

swim. Something really challenging like a skydive or mountain climb. Or, if you’re not feeling so energetic, you could hold a cake sale, fancy dress day or raffle.You could even shave your head! The possibilities are endless and, as we embark on a new year and make our resolutions, perhaps becoming one of Arthur’s Adventurers could be yours?”

What’s on the menu for local families?

Who likes a fruit smoothie, home-made soup, sweet potato and lentil curry and carrot and banana squares?

Families with pre-school children in Havant will be learning how to create these healthy dinners and snacks plus a whole lot more as a fabulous programme aimed at developing healthy eating habits kicks off in Action for Children Havant East & West Children’s Centre Cluster using funding obtained locally from Pfizer Cluster Coordinator Jo Alesbury who says: • “The “Cook and Eat” project gives local families a fantastic opportunity to come into their local children’s

centre with their children and learn, in a fun and friendly way; how to cook on a budget, and serve delicious, nutritious meals to their toddlers and pre-school children. There’s also the opportunity to taste some exciting new foods, including fruit kebabs, Italian frittata and fruit cobbler”.

• The programme was developed by Hampshire’s NHS and was originally set up for families with children at school. However, with startling statistics for obesity in under five year olds (9 per cent of under-fives in Havant are classed as obese), the re-launch of the project now aims to reach children at an even earlier age.

Alcohol Education Trust films Hayling pupils for National Campaign Twenty Year 9s from the Hayling College were filmed taking part in a special lesson taught by Heather Hedley that focused on alcohol education. The national Alcohol Education Trust (AET) asked us to provide this opportunity for them because of our award winning progress in reducing antisocial behaviour by drunken young people on the Island through the CAP project. The lesson, interviews with staff and community

members, and a training session for teachers, will be used on the AET and CAP websites and YouTube in order for other schools and communities to see how well the abuse of alcohol can be tackled. The pupils were exceptional, taking part fully in the lesson despite the ever present camera, and five (Beth Mctigue, Bailey MacCallum, Matthew pickles, Imogen Gervasoni, and Sarah Mann) were then interviewed

HEALTH & WELL-BEING Give Your Heart a Valentine's Gift Perhaps it is a coincidence that the British Heart Foundation (BHF) has declared February as “National Heart Month”.

Everyone is familiar with the term “heart attack” but many do not recognise the symptoms and delay taking action. This delay may result in death or avoidable damage to the heart.

As a pharmacist I sometimes encounter an individual who has recently had or is going to have a heart attack. They usually present with what they convince themselves is indigestion or they have sent a worried spouse to the pharmacy to tell me about “a pain that goes down the arm”. A heart attack can show symptoms from the incapacitating (“a metal band tightening around the chest”) to discomfort, similar to indigestion. Other symptoms include dizziness and nausea.

Usually the symptoms will be made worse by exercise such as walking up stairs. I find it hard to understand why people are so reluctant to act when their life is at risk.

Oddly men seem to be the major culprits and you have to pity their poor wives (widows?)

If you suspect you or someone else is having a heart attack call an ambulance immediately. Early treatment not only saves lives but also means that more heart muscle can be saved. Any damage to heart muscle is irreversible and is caused by a lack of oxygen supply.

People often ask if they should take Aspirin at the time of the attack for its action in preventing blood clots. This does have a beneficial effect but only take them if they are near to hand – don't go wandering around the house looking for them as this can cause an extra strain on the heart. If you have a companion let them look but they must not leave you for any length of time.

If you want to lessen your chances of having a heart attack 1. Stop smoking 2. Maintain a healthy weight

3. Engage in at least moderate exercise on a weekly basis 4. Reduce your alcohol consumption if you drink more than the recommended safe limits. (21 units per week for men and 14 units for women) 5. Follow a healthy diet 6. Have your blood pressure regularly checked

Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation (DRWF), based on Hayling Island, has joined other leading medical research charities across the UK to support a new campaign to raise awareness to the importance of sharing data from medical records with medical researchers.

The campaign coincides with a leaflet drop by NHS England to all 22 million households in England to explain the changes to how data from health records is collected from GP surgeries; these patient records held by the NHS are an invaluable resource for scientists.

With careful controls to protect individuals’ privacy, by removing any personal contact details, researchers are able to use the information from the records to make discoveries that improve the prevention and treatment of disease.

Dr Eleanor Kennedy Research Manager at DRWF explained: “This is a powerful new initiative that showcases the uniqueness of the NHS. Access to patient data like this could accelerate new

medicines and treatments getting to market and this, in turn, could have an enormous and lasting impact on the health of the nation.“ DRWF is a major global force in diabetes research; the foundation has funded more than £8.4m of vital diabetes research since it was established in the UK. The charity is currently funding 24 researchers across the country, the DRWF Islet Isolation Facility at the Oxford Centre for Diabetes Endocrinology & Metabolism (OCDEM) at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford as well as contributing to a number of collaborative international funding initiatives.”

Tai Chi Chuan – more than just a sequence What is it? How is it practiced? What is it for?

Essentially, Tai Chi is an ancient philosophy or art broadly based on natural forces of Yin and Yang. The “Chuan” meaning “to transmit”. So, in essence, Tai Chi Chuan is the physical act of learning about Tai Chi. Tai Chi has come to be known as people moving in slow sequences, often in parks. These sequences are usually called “The Form” or “Forms”.

This is really where the story begins; the movements and sequences only tell a small part of what could be happening.

There are many aspects often missed when simply copying these often pleasing sequences. Aspects of practice: Form,

There are exercises to loosen and free the tension from the body, breathing and focused routines to enable releasing of inner stresses, partner-work to show resistance within, changing reflexes and methods of increasing concentration enhancing self-awareness.

The Forms are mainly to aid the understanding of the aspects mentioned above rather than an end in themselves.

Without all aspects it would be unlikely to yield much result other than enjoying moving the body.

Emma Bailey - pictured right - from Leigh Park is chosen to spread the word about type one diabetes in Parliament Emma Bailey, aged 10 from Leigh Park has been selected by a global charity to speak about life with type one diabetes at a major House of Commons event this spring.

JDRF, the type one diabetes charity, has chosen Emma, who attends Bosmere Junior School, to attend Type 1 Parliament, which takes place on 11 March, 2014 and is kindly supported by Platinum sponsors Lilly. She will be one of sixty children and adults who live with the condition and have been selected from across the country to represent their constituencies.

Type one diabetes is a chronic and challenging condition. The exact cause is unknown, but it is not linked to lifestyle or diet. A child diagnosed with it at the age of five faces up to 19,000 insulin injections and 50,000 finger prick tests by the time they are 18. The condition affects 400,000 people in the UK – equivalent to more than 600 people in every constituency – and incidence is growing rapidly, particularly in those under five years old.

Helen Bailey is Emma’s mum. She said: ‘Emma’s diagnosis when she was 3 years old was a very difficult time for the family. It means they can’t always be carefree like other children can.”

But Helen Bailey added: “It was very

exciting to hear that Emma had been chosen to represent all those in our area living with the condition at Type 1 Parliament. Going to the House of Commons and talking to MPs will be a wonderful experience for them.”

Karen Addington, Chief Executive of JDRF, said: “Type one diabetes doesn’t have to hold you back in life. But it is a very challenging condition to live with. The Government must respond to increasing rates of type one diabetes in the UK by investing more in research to treat, prevent and cure the condition.That’s why we’re taking our message to Westminster in March.”

Food and Wine Wine of the Month Languedoc Roussillon – The latest ‘New World’?

Jonathan Rogers of The Solent Wine Experience looks at this amazing region.

The wines of the Languedoc Roussillon region in the south of France have become some of the most exciting wines to be produced for some time. I say ‘become’, but in reality they have been around for a good few years now but they seem to get better and better.

Forty years ago this region was producing huge amounts of mediocre wine with no real potential and certainly no major export markets. The French government had had enough by the late 70’s and began to throw subsidies to the growers to encourage them to plant new grape varieties, reduce yields and generally start producing better wines. They introduced their ‘Vins de Pays’ scheme which helped winemakers who were intent on upping their game in terms of producing quality wines, although there were still quite a few producers who had no intention of changing their ways. Those who did, created a new generation of winemakers and in turn produced a new generation of quality wines.

The early 90’s began to see an influx of Australian winemakers moving to the region realising its potential. This was at a time when Australia was a major success in its branding, exports and off course, its wine. One major player in Australia moved to create a brand typical of the region.

Hardy’s purchased Domaine de la Baume in 1990 and this certainly encouraged local producers to take note in their region and to start producing wines the world would take note of. Hardy’s have since sold the Domaine but local producers continue to create a leading force in the ‘brand’ Languedoc Roussillon.

A healthy start to the new year with Vegetable Biryani We all start the New Year with good intentions and I am going to help in that quest with my first recipe for 2014. I also decided that as a family we would try to eat a couple of ‘vegetarian’ meals a week. These tend to be lower in fat and higher in fibre and less calorific. Not only that, they are also cheaper because vegetables, beans, pulses and nuts do not cost as much as meat and have many more nutritional and health benefits. I hope you will enjoy this wholesome and tasty family meal.

Ingredients 2 tbsp vegetable oil 1 small cauliflower, broken into small florets 1 medium size Butternut Squash 1 large onion, sliced 1litre hot vegetable stock 3 tbsp Biryani powder mixed to a paste with water to make curry paste Large pinch of saffron strands 2 tsp mustard seeds (black or white) 500g Basmati rice soaked in boiling water 140g trimmed green beans, halved 2 lemons, juice only a handful of fresh coriander leaves 50g packet roasted cashew nuts Preparation 1. Preheat the oven to 220C/gas 7/fan 200C. Pour the oil into a large roasting tin or large casserole dish in the oven for a couple of minutes to heat through.

2. Pour boiling water on Basmati until just covered and leave to soak.

3. Prepare vegetables and add all the vegetables to the tin, except the beans and onions, stirring to coat them in the hot oil: Season with salt and pepper and return to the oven for 15 minutes until beginning to brown.

4. Stir together the stock and saffron.

5. Fry onions in small amount of oil until golden brown and add mustard seeds and fry until they start popping. Add the Curry paste and finally add the stock, stir well to mix.

6. Mix the rice and green beans with the vegetables in the tin, then pour over the stock mixture. Lower the oven to 190C/gas 5/fan 190C. Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 30 minutes until the rice is tender and the liquid has been absorbed.

7. Toast the cashew nuts in a frying pan until golden brown.

8. Stir in the lemon juice and check the seasoning, then scatter over the coriander and cashew nuts. Enjoy.

Hyden (Clanfield) Women's Institute is the place to make friends and enjoy an evening out.

On the third Monday of the month, Members meet at Petersgate School at 7.30p.m. Newcomers are welcome and will find a very friendly group of Ladies from all walk's of life of all ages, sizes and shapes. We have Group Meetings which involves other local WI which means that we can have a more specialised speaker; we also have competitions, Quizzes, Darts and Skittles

competing against other WI's and the winners going on to the next round in another area.

All Hampshire WI's met in the Spring at the Guildhall for a meeting with well known speakers and in the Autumn in Basingstoke.

WHITCHURCH SILK MILL TO DESIGN AND WEAVE UNIQUE SILK FOR HAMPSHIRE AND ISLE OF WIGHT AIR AMBULANCE Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance are working in collaboration with the Whitchurch Silk Mill, a 19th Century water mill that weaves English silk fabric using 19th century machinery. The mill has been commissioned to design and weave a silk suitable for gift-ware to promote and raise money for the Air Ambulance. Using the iconic green and yellow of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance logo, placement student Emma Simmonds has designed a pattern.

Production on the silk started last week and the warp has been wound successfully onto a beam ready to be woven out in the next few months.

One of the first items to be produced will be a handbag mirror compact, woven in green and yellow HIOWAA silk, and available for supporters to purchase this summer.

Rupert Nabarro OBE, Chairman for Whitchurch Silk Mill Trust commented: ‘We are very pleased to be working with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. As two local charities, a collaboration such as this is significant, and will not only help us both to raise much needed funds, but will also raise our profiles on a local level. The silk that we weave will be unique to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and will measure 18 inches wide and will have 850 single ends of silk’ All monies raised from the sale of the giftware will be used to help keep the Air Ambulance flying and saving lives across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

PUT THE WINTER BLUES BEHIND YOU AT THE HAMPSHIRE AND ISLE OF WIGHT AIR AMBULANCE 1920s SPRING BALL Cast yourself back to the Roaring Twenties, an era of Flappers, jazz, the Lindy Hop and Charleston, for an evening of music, dancing and entertainment at the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance 1920s Spring Ball.

On 26th April Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance will be hosting a 1920s Spring Ball at the Novotel Hotel in Southampton to help raise money to keep the Air Ambulance flying and saving lives. In keeping with the 1920s theme, guests are asked to come dressed elegantly, or era appropriate for ladies and gentlemen.

Starting at 7pm, tickets will cost £50 per person, to include a champagne cocktail reception and a four course meal. Tables of 10 are available for a group rate of £450.

The evening will also include a raffle, casino and musical entertainment.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Chief Executive John Perry commented ‘The Spring Ball is always very popular with our supporters and a great source of revenue for HIOWAA. Premier Underwriting have generously sponsored the Ball this year, so that more money can go directly towards helping to keep the Air Ambulance flying’.

What’s on the menu for local families?

Who likes a fruit smoothie, home-made soup, sweet potato and lentil curry and carrot and banana squares?

Families with pre-school children in Havant will be learning how to create these healthy dinners and snacks plus a whole lot more as a fabulous programme aimed at developing healthy eating habits kicks off in Action for Children Havant East & West Children’s Centre Cluster using funding obtained locally from Pfizer Cluster Co-ordinator Jo Alesbury who says: • “The “Cook and Eat” project gives local families a fantastic opportunity to come into their local children’s centre with their children and learn, in a fun and friendly way; how to cook on a budget, and serve delicious, nutritious meals to their toddlers

and pre-school children.

There’s also the opportunity to taste some exciting new foods, including fruit kebabs, Italian frittata and fruit cobbler”.

• The programme was developed by Hampshire’s NHS and was originally set up for families with children at school.

However, with startling statistics for obesity in under five year olds (9 per cent of underfives in Havant are classed as obese), the relaunch of the project now aims to reach children at an even earlier age.

Volunteers work hard in Havant cemeteries

Portsmouth Hispanic Society

Despite the winter weather volunteers have been hard at work in New Lane, Dissenters and Warblington cemeteries helping to conserve them for the benefit of wildlife and people. During our December conservation session 9 volunteers cleared brambles before they engulfed headstones in Dissenters cemetery, cleared ivy, cut back elder and planted a box hedge around the holocaust memorial in New Lane cemetery.

There is a fine balance between preventing plants such as bramble and ivy from swamping the cemetery and providing shelter and food for wildlife. We always work with this in mind and ensure that we do leave patches for wildlife.

During our January conservation session 7 volunteers braved heavy showers and hail to care for a young hedge row and young trees. The hedge row and trees have been planted in the natural burial ground at Warblington cemetery and will provide valuable habitat for wildlife whilst making the area a pleasant place for people to visit.

Our next meeting; entitled Tastes of Spain (Brits in a Spanish Kitchen), will not be the usual run-of-the-mill PHS meeting, featuring a distinguished speaker: instead, five intrepid regular members will be demonstrating their culinary skills and talking about their favourite recipes.

We will get to learn how to make a typical Paella, Ensaladilla (Russian Salad), Tortilla (Spanish potato omelette), Michirones (a bean dish from Murcia) and in addition, a Gibraltarian Austerity Paella. We will of course get to taste the finished products, washed down with a glass of wine.

Anti-smoking at The Hayling College By: Florence Perkins, Georgia Jennings and Harriet Bennett Year 9

Last year, we participated in a 2 day antismoking workshop. We worked with 2 ladies from the smoke free Hampshire and Isle of Wight organisation studying the facts and effects of smoking. While we were there we looked in depth at the ingredients that cause many deaths each year. We also learnt how to help people resist the temptation which we took on board to continue to raise awareness in our school.

The 20 influential pupils who participated were elected by their own peers after filling out a survey. Once we had completed the course we ran assemblies to raise awareness throughout the school.

Rowlands Castle Painting Society Rowlands Castle Painting Society are holding their annual Art Exhibition and Sale on the 15th and 16th March 2014. The Society always puts on a very good show of work and is indeed a treat for everyone to come along and enjoy seeing original works of art that cover a wide range of subjects including local scenes from around the area.

The paintings are for sale and are very reasonably priced considering the work and time put in. There will be an opportunity to meet with some of the artists, who are more than happy to answer any questions.

The exhibition takes place in the Parish Hall, Links Lane ,Rowlands Castle. It can be viewed on both days from 10am - 4pm.

There is also a tombola and a chance for visitors to vote for their favourite painting.

Ayckbourn at the Station Theatre The ingenious comic thriller ‘Communicating Doors’ by Alan Ayckbourn premièred in 1994, is playing from 22nd to 29th March. When Julian walks in, Poopay flees through the nearest door and finds herself in an identical suite, but in the year 1994. Postcode Publications Merchistoun Hall 55 Club Celebrate 20 years! HORNDEAN PARISH TWINNING ASSOCIATION WELCOMES THE FRENCH

The 55 Club at Merchistoun Hall in Horndean was 20 years old on Monday February 10th – and is every bit as popular as the day it opened back in 1994! And shared its celebrations with Horndean!

Opening the morning as an open day for the whole community to come along and join in the celebrations.

Some of those who were members the day it opened are still with it today.

They offered a free morning which started with keep fit taster sessions with resident Keep fit Instructor Sandra followed by a morning of breakfast (bacon rolls & croissants) tea /coffee – a special raffle, gift sale and displays of the club in year gone by!

The club was the brainchild of Merchistoun Hall’s late manager Jill Kirby – the club was set up as a self help learning and social club for people aged 55 and over meeting every Monday with Keep fit, coffee, raffle, then either an activity presented by a club member or an invited guest speakers.

For those with a passion for debate & challenge, they get their opportunity to air their views and put the world to rights with their ‘Talk! Talk!’ debating sessions choosing recent hot topics as the themes for their discussions. Then each Monday afternoon its board games, darts and a thriving art &

crafts group.

And over the years the club has expanded to offer trips around the South of England, The West end & offers two well attended short mat bowls sessions – and if that’s isn’t enough ... members get together to present a ‘home grown’ Christmas show each December for the rest of the club to enjoy.

Members can be seen throughout the week at Merchistoun Hall supporting other areas of the charity, attending quiz nights, audiences for theatre shows & members to the Horndean U3A – who also hold their meetings at Merchistoun Hall.

Members have also held positions as trustees to its host charity HCA. One of the original members Yvonne Sprack has held the post of Chairman to HCA for over 10 years!

‘The 55 Club is a lifeline for lot of old people. We do care and look after their well-being. They look forward to Mondays, it makes their week. We have a really good representation on men in the group’ For many it’s their favourite day of the week’ ...

Horndean Parish Twinning Association (HPTA) welcomed friends from Aubergenville in France for a weekend of events. For their latest visit the French enjoyed a game of skittles in a traditional English pub, a visit to Arundel Castle as well as being entertained by their hosts for a BBQ and a traditional ‘English Tea’.

Aubergenville, a town 45km West from Paris on the banks of the Seine, has been ‘Twinned’ with Horndean for 15 years. Each year Horndean plays host to a group from Aubergenville and the hospitality is reciprocated when Horndean members enjoy a return trip to France. The trip to France, which is partly financed by the Association, coincides with the town’s Fete weekend in May or June and this year will be 6/7/8 June 2014.

The aim of the Twinning Association is to foster friendship and understanding between the people of Horndean and those of Aubergenville and by so doing, broaden the mutual understanding of the culture, recreational, educational and commercial activities of the linked communities.

The Association is completely selffunding, therefore various fund raising events are organised throughout the year.

Last November a ‘Wine Tasting’ was held and run by Sue Moss from Morrisons. It turned out to be a very educational and entertaining evening. One of the most popular annual events is the ‘Proms Concert’ held in Horndean Technical College and this year it will be on Friday

4th July and will include the ‘Proms Brass Ensemble’ and ‘The Pompey Pluckers’, a ukulele band. Other fund raising events include a Quiz Night on Friday 4th April in Jubilee Hall in Catherington Lane. Dreams Do Come True At “All Flowers” in Horndean Precinct Since an early age Shelley Cormie, proprietor “All Flowers”, wanted to be a florist, beginning with making Xmas Holly Wreaths with her Dad at home. Having always been good with creativity and working with her hands her relationship with floristry began to grow.

As a young girl in Liss, Hampshire she completed her Guides floristry badge and started a Saturday job in her local village.

Schooling was based around her chosen career; Shelley entered the Youth Training Scheme in Petersfield and carried on her

further education at Sparsholt College near Winchester.

Shelley was working full time as a florist in Havant when she met Scott, a decorated member of the British Armed Forces. They married and moved away from the local area and re-located numerous times.

Before leaving the UK for Germany, Shelley was fully trained with Interflora with Worldwide qualifications which would enable her to one day fulfil her dream of having her own shop.

After 12 ½ years away they finally moved back to the UK as Scott is due to retire from the Army after completing his colour service of 22 years.

Postcode Publications ‘Dance Up’ at The Spring Havant-based Dance Up (the exciting new name for The Hampshire Dance Trust – we make great dance happen in unusual places) is offering a new dance and movement class for under 5’s and accompanying grown ups called Boogie Bum Bums. Sessions are held during the school term every Monday morning from 10.30 to 11.30 at The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre in Havant The funky dance sessions are designed to help children learn new dance and movement skills and develop creativity, imagination, confidence and social skills as well as making new friends along the way.

Participants do not need any previous dance experience and the emphasis is on having fun.

Boogie Bum Bums programme was designed and created by Somerset’s Mean Feet Dance Company who specialise in dance and health programmes across the country. After seeing the effectiveness of the programme Dance Up organised a teacher training course for dance artists

with Mean Feet. Local dance artist Vicky Hargreaves is delivering the sessions for Dance Up. The classes are currently supported by Big Lottery through funds allocated to Portsmouth City Council and The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre and will continue in the summer and autumn with the support of Havant Borough Council.

The classes are already going down well with Havant parents: ‘Great to have this dance class at The Spring. My 3 year old son absolutely loved it and I also got to exercise at the same time! Perfect. Thank you!’ ‘What a wonderful experience, brilliant fun!’

Pat and Bob - Winners of the Summer Painting Competition Rowlands castle painting society ended the year 2013 with a Christmas party organised by one of our members Sally Williams and her team of helpers which included Pat and Ian Hoper, John Richards and Elizabeth Taylor. There was a holiday painting competition which was jointly won

by Bob Payne and Pat Hoper, a card competition won by Gary Miller and a new competition which was a photo of one of the many painting outings won by Maureen Aldous.

This popular painting society now looks forward to the 2014 programme where there is so much to offer with professional artists visiting to give demonstrations, life groups and workshops, we also go out to different locations painting and sketching through the summer.

Hayling Billy Heritage Project Green to go!

A partnership comprising local volunteers, Havant Borough Council and Hampshire County Council have secured a £88,900 Heritage Lottery Fund grant to deliver the Hayling Billy Heritage Project.

The project will convey the heritage of the Hayling Billy railway on the Island. The project will enable improvements and conservation work to take place along the route and provide exciting learning and volunteering opportunities for local people.

Participants will have the chance to develop skills and volunteer time through the establishment of a ‘Friends of the Billy Line’ group who will be supported to undertake volunteer roles and work in partnership with the conservation volunteers on neighbouring sites.

To help guide people around the site and allow them explore the heritage of the railway information board, trail leaflets, digital material via a new website, including

photos, historical information, will help create a engaging and interesting place to go for visitors.

Councillor Yvonne Weeks said “The benefits for the local community will be a heritage project for generations to come, a focus for community volunteers to work on together to create a lasting legacy for local people and visitors. The Partnership has worked really hard with the council officers on securing the funding however, this is just the start.

“This project is a great example of how the community and Councils can work together to make things happen. The enthusiasm and genuine determination of the group is inspiring and shows localism at its best.”

Local Boy meets Middlesbrough Hero’s By: Joshua Lucas

Fourteen-year-old Callum Lucas from Havant has had his wish of meeting the Middlesbrough FC squad granted by the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

Callum who suffers from a rare gastrointestinal disease called eosinophilic entrocolitis (EGID), has been ill from birth and has spent his life in and out of hospital for upsetting and painful treatments.

Despite this he has soldiered though in the attempt to live a normal life.

A life long Boro fan, Callum remembers

first being taken to a game at the age of six by his father, a serving solider. Unfortunately it was not a ‘dream’ start for Callum as they narrowly lost to Wigan Athletic 3-2.

However this defeat didn’t put him off and he followed in his father’s footsteps of supporting his home-town club.

Callum’s mother, Michelle got in touch with the Starlight Children’s Foundation who then acted quickly in contacting the North East football club and getting it set up.

Callum, along with his parents Michelle and Steven, elder brother Joshua, aged 16 and younger sister Alexandra-Grace, aged 12 were invited up to Middlesbrough’s training facility at Rockliffe Park where Callum and his family were greeted by the clubs press officer Graham Bell, who took them down to where the players were training, this surprised Callum as to start off with the players were playing handball before splitting up into smaller groups to as they practised passing, defending and their first touches, Callum also got himself involved by passing the ball back to one of the players during training.

After the players had finished training they made their way over to Callum and his family to greet them.

After they had met the players, 7 of them, including Callum’s favourite George Friend posed for a photo with Callum and his Brother Joshua, afterwards Callum had this to say “It was amazing especially meeting Jonathan Woodgate seeing as he played in the first game I went to.”

But Callum’s fun wasn’t over yet as Middlesbrough FC invited him to the match

against Bolton the following day, putting Callum and his family up in one of the top boxes to watch the match from. This proved a fun and exciting day for Callum and his family as he was invited down to pitch side along with his brother and dad to watch the teams warm up, where he had photos taken with several of the players and watched the teams walk out before kick-off. When asked about the experience Callum had this to say, “It was brilliant I love football and I love Middlesbrough so getting to stand there at the riverside was something special.”

Luckily for Callum the game proved exciting with Middlesbrough dominant throughout the majority of the match eventually coming out 1-0 winners after a 81st minute penalty on a day that saw the début of the first foreign manager in the clubs illustrious history, Aitor Karanka. The day didn’t end at the full-time whistle for Callum though as he was able to get a shirt signed by new manger Aitor Karanka and man of the match Ben Gibson, who paid the family a special visit in their box after the match.

Off The Record Needs You! Havant and Portsmouth Counselling charity ‘Off the Record’, which has helped countless people over the years, now needs some help back.

The registered and independent charity has been based in Leigh Park since 1977, offering support and counselling for young people aged 11-25 over the years.

However, it was not for want of corrective measures. The pumping station put in nearly two years ago has been pumping a steady and substantial stream day and night - it's just that there has been so much rain recently that there is far more water than it can realistically cope with in the short term.

Once the water stopped pouring in, the pump did a great job of clearing the excess within a day.

Havant Cricket Club Situated in the north-east corner of Havant Park, is the Sports Club Pavilion, the headquarters of both Havant Hockey and Cricket Clubs. At weekends all year round The Pavilion, also known as the Clubhouse, is in regular use by either club, depending upon the season.

Rebuilt in the 1960s, the Clubhouse has been the headquarters for the two sports for well over a century. The building itself is administered by the Havant Sports Club, a committee made up of members from the two constituent clubs.

The Committee is hoping to rent out the Pavilion on midweek winter evenings for such clubs as Bridge, Chess, Scrabble or indeed any group who might wish to meet on a regular basis. The facilities include a well-stocked bar and a kitchen, from which hot food can be served.

Members of the Sports Club would staff these facilities. The clubhouse is very adaptable and there are plenty of tables and ample seating for up to seventy.

It has also been suggested that the Clubhouse could be used as the venue for a quiz league that might meet weekly, fortnightly or monthly depending upon the interest shown. In fact it was originally formed in 1822. The club has records going back well over a century including a game in the late 19th century between ourselves and Portsmouth CC in which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle took part.

Since the beginning of competitive cricket in the mid-1970s the club has played a leading part in the prestigious Southern League, winning the Championship 12 times; the last in 2011.

As a public park, the ground is highly regarded nationally and the club regularly reach the later stages of the National Cup.

Women’s Olympic Sailing Hayling Island’s 19-year-old Eilidh McIntyre has joined forces with Sophie Weguelin to campaign to win gold in the Rio Olympics 2016. Eilidh’s father Mike McIntyre won Olympic gold in 1988, in the Star Class. The Girls have formed ‘Team 3,2,1’ (3 Sails, 2 Girls and 1 Dream) as a means of fundraising to help finance their expensive 2-3 year campaign for gold in the Women’s Olympic 470 Class. ‘Team 3,2,1’ has already arranged a fundraiser on Saturday, 12 April at Hayling Island Sailing Club. It will be a Black tie affair, with guest speakers, an auction, a three course meal and a chance to be part of their journey! Eilidh said on the Yachting World Blog “The light wind wasn't usually something we tend to favour, but it's not been a struggle this week.

We've done a lot of training before the regatta and we felt pretty confident going in. It's just nice to know that we've got good pace, which is always helpful, and it's nice to know that we're able to handle ourselves in tight situations."

The pair are European bronze medallists, have previously won the EUROSAF Champions Cup title in Kiel, but this marks their first World Cup victory since teaming up last January.

In the latest ISAF World Rankings released on 3 February, Sophie and Eilidh have moved up two places to be ranked world number 1 in their Class for the first time!

The members of Denmead Bowling Club are opening the door to non members to visit the Club and have a go at playing bowls. The Club is in the King George V Playing Fields, Ashling Park Road, Denmead (the hedged in area behind the large car park) Although many members play at a reasonably high level, it is recognised that not everybody wishes to play at that level.

For that reason social bowling and friendship is very much part of Clubs ethos and enjoyed by all members. Accordingly, the Club has an active social calendar with various functions taking place throughout the year, including on Thursday afternoons during the winter, a Craft club.

It is a well-established mixed Bowling Club, founded over 20 years ago, where both social and competitive bowling is played. Like many clubs it is always looking to increase its membership so if you have

Havant & Waterlooville Swimming Club at Crystal Palace 2014 Training Camp

The Havant & Waterlooville Swimming Club squad held a training camp at the prestigious Crystal Palace long course training facility over the weekend 24 – 25 January. The youngsters used the opportunity as part of their long term development training and crucial preparation for the county championships in March. The county championships this year will be held over three weekends. The initial weekend, for relay and long distance events, will be on the 1/2 March at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth in the full sized 50 metre long course pool. The following weekend, 8/9 March, the Championships move to the Havant & Waterlooville Leisure Centre Pool in Waterberry Drive, Waterlooville, for the age group events. The third weekend, 15/16 March, back at the Mountbatten Centre, is for the County Youth County Championships, age 14 years and over.

The two-day Crystal Palace training camp provided the Havant & Waterlooville squad with14 hours of pool and dry side training sessions, an educational classroom session and on Saturday evening after training a fun but serious team building session . The training camp was a major opportunity for the squad to work intensively with Senior Club Coach Graham Pople on many aspects of their swimming techniques. For many of the younger swimmers it was a first opportunity to train independently away from their parents and

families.

The swimmers completed 10k each day in the long course pool and hundreds of exhausting sit ups, squat thrusts and pressups in the gym. Classroom sessions featured revealing footage from the Club’s new underwater camera, of the swimmers pool training sessions. Many key technical issues were highlighted and a DVD of world class swimmers a comparison of techniques!

The prime goal for the weekends training was to help fast swimming and for some, hopefully, winning medals at the forthcoming county championships and qualifying for regional and national championships later the year. It gave swimmers the opportunity in different waters, in a long course pool to see where they were on key qualifying and medalling times.

Crystal Palace has always provided superb support, balanced meals and almost exclusive use of the quality facilities.

After comfort food for the journey home with birthday cake supplied by the Huggins family (happy birthday Rory) the exhausted team boarded the coach supplied so generously by the Emsworth Coach Company - in conjunction with Postcode Publications - sore but better athletes for the experience. Needless to say the journey home was infinitely quieter than the outward journey to the 2014 Crystal Palace training camp.

A Hawkeye Report from Ian Radcliffe and Tim Randall What an exciting time for Hawks fans!

After a slow start to the campaign everything is now taking off.

After a masterly 4 -1 winning performance on 4 February in the QuarterFinals of the FA Trophy against strong Skrill Premier Opponents Aldershot Town, Hawks eagerly await the two leg semi final showdown with local rivals Gosport Borough for a place in the Cup Final at Wembley. Manager Lee Bradbury said “We [still] have two difficult games with Gosport to negotiate.” He added that he never went to Wembley as a player but going as a Manager would be great. He is aware that for everyone at the Club and the supporters it would be a day out to remember. On a salutary note, the club did reach the Semi-finals of the FAT once before only to be denied a trip to the final.

So come on Hawks lets do it this time and with some style! The Semi-Final dates are Saturday 15 February at Westleigh Park with the return a week later on 22 February at Gosport’s Privett Park ground.

Both matches kick off at 3.00 pm.

There was a large crowd for the match in spite of the downpour and high winds and was reminiscent of the FA Cup game against the now Premiership club Swansea City that coincidently also ended in a 4 – 1 victory for the Hawks.

As if all that was not enough, Hawks also face a home Semi-final match in the Hampshire Senior Cup against AFC Portchester of the Wessex Premier League, to be played on a date to be agreed in the

w/c 3 March. The other side of this Semifinal draw is Gosport Borough v Basingstoke Town.

The best news of all coming out of the Club is that manager Lee Bradbury has just signed a contract extension, keeping him at the Club until May 2016.

It is important, with so much going on, to keep in mind the effect that the inclement weather is having on the Hawks in the League. Due to the incessant rain they have played only two league matches in 2014. The log jam has inevitably dropped them down the Conference South table but Hawks are still well placed to contend for a play-off place with six - eight games in hand on most opponents. It will however be a testing time.

The team faces playing three times a week for most of the remainder of the season and the resilience of the squad and the management skills of Lee Bradbury and his staff will be tested to the full. On this front, with the club earning a sizable addition in revenue from their FAT cup exploits, Scott Donnelly, has been added to the squad from Farnborough. Donnelly is currently amongst the top scorers in the Conference South charts and will be a useful addition to bolster the Clubs goal scoring options.

The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile is back – and it’s coming to Havant! Havant Borough Council is urging residents to sign up and show their support for Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile on Sunday 23rd March, 2pm.

Setting off from Staunton Country Park there are three distances to choose from one, three and six Miles (different start times depending on distance). You can register on-line www.sportrelief.com or by telephone on 0300 123 5070.

Working in Partnership with Victory Athletics Running Club, the Havant Borough Mile is set to be a fun packed day full of entertainment. A fancy dress competition for both adults and children with prizes provided from Horizon Leisure Centre and Innovations Fitness. With Big Noise Samba Band will be playing throughout the day, keeping the spirits up of all the runners.

A BANK HOLIDAY CHALLENGE TO REMEMBER Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance are calling upon supporters to sign up for an epic endurance challenge around the coastal path of the Isle of Wight on August Bank Holiday (23rd – 24th August) this year.

New for 2014, and set to become a classic in the UK’s endurance calendar, the Isle of Wight Challenge is for those who want a tough but rewarding challenge and who appreciate spectacular scenery and a great sense of camaraderie. Participants can choose between the full island loop of 100km, or the 56km ‘half’ Island challenge, taking in areas of outstanding natural beauty with spectacular coastlines, dramatic white cliffs and sandy beaches. Most will walk it at their own pace, some will jog bits of it, and a few will even run the full distance ultramarathon style.

Ellie Staley and her cousin Bethany Rimington Staley have a very personal reason for deciding to take on the Isle of Wight Challenge. Ellie’s sister Evey was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by HIOWAA the night that she died on 24th August 2012.

Evey was ten years old when the car she was travelling in with her parents was hit by a driver who was two and a half times over the drink drive limit. Thanks to HIOWAA, Evey’s family had the opportunity to say good bye to her, something that they are eternally grateful for.

John Perry, Chief Executive of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance commented ‘With our close connections with The Isle of Wight, we are hoping that this challenge will appeal to our supporters both from the

Island and further afield. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance are looking for champions in search of a challenge to join a trek to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania in February 2015. At nearly 6,000m, Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and the six day trek is not for the faint hearted. However, anyone who is reasonably fit should be able to make the ascent, and what better way to start the New Year than with a resolution to achieve a personal goal and help save lives at the same time?

For Matthew Davis from Upton, Near Andover, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is an opportunity to celebrate the life of his daughter Lily, who was conveyed to Southampton General Hospital by HIOWAA in 2102. ‘We are eternally grateful to the Air Ambulance for everything that they did for Lily. She would have been three years old on 1st January 2015, and we see the Kilimanjaro trek as a great way to

celebrate her life and raise funds and awareness for HIOWAA’, commented her mother, Felicity Davis. Mr Davis will be joined by Lily’s uncle, Doug Evans.

The trek will be led by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Community Fundraiser, James King, who will be there to spur participants on when the going gets tough, and to offer training and fundraising tips throughout 2014. James commented ‘We have had an amazing response to our Kilimanjaro call to action and this will be an important fundraising opportunity for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance in 2015. We need more people to take up the challenge, and to make it their New Year’s resolution to ‘Reach New Heights and Help Save Lives’.

Hayling Island Bowls Club put on an evening of fun and excitement for members, their families and friends. Shouts of "Line", "House", "Higher", "Lower", "Take the money", Open the box" (amongst others) rang out as Bingo, Play Your Cards Right and Take Your Pick were played, all organised by Ken West and the social team. The raffle was organised by Maureen Parmiter and Maggie Blampied.

Postcode Publications Victoria Edwards – Cornwall Badge The 16th January 2014 saw Scouts, leaders, friends and family gathered at the Spinnaker Tower to see Victoria Edwards receive the Cornwall Scout Badge, the highest honour which can be bestowed upon a Scout. But then again Victoria is no ordinary 14 year old girl!

3½ years ago Victoria suffered a stroke, an affliction associated with older folk and not a then 11 year old girl! Left partially paralysed (she is unable to use her left arm) and partially sighted in both eyes Victoria spent the following 5½ months in hospital and a further period of time in rehabilitation.

Victoria has also been diagnosed as suffering from a brain tumour. But despite all this Victoria has faced these challenges with immense courage, and with great support from her parents, overcame the barriers which her disabilities presented to lead a full and active life.

The evening was planned with Victoria knowing that she would be receiving an award but with no idea of which award. She was interviewed by Adam Jolley, County Scout Commissioner for Hampshire, who asked Victoria what she liked about Scouting, her reply … “I enjoy camping, being outdoors and being with friends” and on the current thorny camping issue of “Muddy or Sunny” Victoria felt that “camping is nice in the sun but it wouldn’t be fun without it being muddy!” Adam outlined how Victoria had achieved her Gold Chief Scouts award

The Cornwell Scout Badge The Cornwell Scout Badge is awarded in respect of pre-eminently high character and devotion to duty, together with great courage and endurance.

It is restricted to Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts, Explorer Scouts and Scout Network Members. Both the bronze badge and the cloth emblem of the same design may be worn.

John 'Jack' Travers Cornwell, a Scout in the St. Mary’s Mission Group, Manor Park, London, entered the Royal Navy in 1915. It was wartime and training was brief, but Jack, helped by his days in Scouting, was able to adapt quickly.

On 31 May 1916 while serving in HMS Chester, Jack was struck by a shell splinter.

Grievously wounded, he stayed at his post awaiting orders until he was relieved at the end of the battle. On reaching port, Jack was transferred to a hospital in Grimsby and three days later he died a national hero.

For gallantry he was given both the Victoria Cross and the highest Scouting award, the Bronze Cross. To commemorate the courage shown by Jack, The Scout Association created ‘The Cornwell Scout Badge’ in his memory.

In 2013 there were 4 awards of the Cornwall Badge.

TWENTIETH SHOP OPENS IN TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY YEAR The Rowans Hospice is opening its twentieth charity shop at Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth on Wednesday 22nd January, in the Hospice’s 20th Anniversary year. The Rowans Hospice Trading Company was formed prior to the opening of The Rowans Hospice to support fund-raising for a local hospice. It has grown from just one shop in Fratton Road to 20 shops located throughout the Hospice’s area of care, with a further two more planned to open in 2014.

The shop in Gunwharf Quays will be a unique boutique, specialising in vintage and upcycled clothing and goods and it is the only charity shop located at the shopping centre. This has been made possible through a ‘Charity of the Year’ partnership with Land Securities who manage the site.

Sean Sweeney MBE, Centre Manager at Gunwharf Quays, comments: “We’re delighted to welcome The Rowans Hospice store to Gunwharf Quays. As our charity partner we want to support the vital work of the hospice in any way we can. This is an exciting new concept charity shop that will give people the chance to pick up unique vintage and upcycled items while raising

funds for the local service provided by The Rowans Hospice.”

Anne Yendell, Director of Finance & Operations at The Rowans Hospice, said: “We are very excited to be opening our twentieth shop at Gunwharf Quays; this is an excellent location for us and will give The Rowans Hospice exposure to a wider audience. An Indonesian Adventure In our last issue edition we reported on the great work that Southbourne-based church charity BEATS were doing in the run-up to Christmas. The British Earthquake And Tsunami Support foundation, which was set up after the devastating tsunami hit South East Asia on Boxing Day 2004 by members of the congregation at St John’s Church in Southbourne, has been working hard to help an orphanage in Aceh as well as two others in Medan, Indonesia.

In this edition, we speak to some of the local sponsors living in the PO9&PO11 area, who tell us their story of their visit to Indonesia. These are sponsors who are currently supporting some of the children living at the orphanage in Medan and Aceh: Elaine Hooper, from Southbourne (left) said "I went to visit the orphans and children in Indonesia in 2011. I was so struck by their thankfulness for BEATS and the genuine appreciation for the support the children and young people receive. I was overwhelmed with how little they have and their willingness to give to us.

Most of the orphans live in poverty but are far happier than most families here in the UK. Their attitude to education and respect for their school uniform is quite humbling. I would encourage anyone to think about sponsoring a young person or teacher as it has changed my outlook on how much we have and how little they have. and losing so much, yet still full of hope and willingness to give to others. Going out to Indonesia has made me much more aware of the wonderful work that BEATS are doing. It is not just about our giving to the children but it is also about building relationships, showing our love to them by spending time with them and taking personal messages to them from their sponsors. The children and families welcomed us warmly with thanks and gratitude for the support we give. Meeting my sponsored child was a wonderful experience. I felt welcomed and embraced immediately by his whole family. I feel privileged to have been able to meet him and be welcomed into his home."

Geoff visited Indonesia in 2008 with Sarah Page, the charity's Chairperson. In his usual dry sense of humour, Geoff says, "A trip to Indonesia leaves a lasting impression, if nothing else of the climate. The constant high temperatures day and night, together with the high humidity, make it a challenge to Westerners. A thunderstorm with torrential downpour is something to be welcomed; it is an excuse to run into the street with very little on, enjoy the drop in temperature and luxuriate in the rain. The

downpour does have a negative side, in that it makes the frogs croak even louder! At night, when the noise of the traffic has dropped a few decibels, the frogs are a constant background noise; but, if you go with the flow, it could lull you off to sleep, as long as the necessary air conditioning is not too noisy!"

27 year old Chris Johnson from Southbourne (pictured above) went out to Indonesia in 2012 to provide educational support to the YASAH orphanage, which looks after more than 100 children. He stayed out there for three months where he taught English and kept a diary of his time out there. An extract of which is as follows: “I arrived at the YASAH orphanage, which translates as "Streams of living water and grace foundation”, after a very long flight. The orphanage was home to over 100 children who were sleeping in girls’ and boys’ dorm rooms on bunk beds. I was given a room to myself, which I felt extremely grateful for.

Something which struck me about this place, was that despite there being more than 100 children, there are no toys whatsoever here. They have a few footballs but the children make do with what they can find – I have even seen them playing with rocks and sticks. In spite of this, you

rarely see a sad, upset or bored child and it caused me to make a stark comparison to the privileges I had in my own country.

When I was brought into the school, I was introduced to several classes of children and I would be teaching a range of ages, from 9-16. As with every class there are a range of abilities in them, but sometimes the ability gap seems huge. In one of the classes it was particularly noticeable. There was one child who managed to learn the numbers 1-999 in a single lesson. On the next desk however there was another child, who, after 3 lessons can barely say 1-10. It just goes to show that it really is possible to make a difference, no matter how big or small, and those children really appreciated being taught first hand and enjoyed the learning processes.

Despite the trial and tribulations, I really enjoyed the teaching. It does make me smile when I teach them one thing and they next day they are using it in conversation with me. There is one girl, Bella, who I am determined to get up to a near perfect level of English before I go. Her English is already pretty good so it won't be that hard!”

Year 7 and 8 students will have the opportunity to develop their thinking further at our next Enrichment Day on 14th February 2014 when we will be joined by the Community Team at Network Rail.

On the 22nd January “Off the Level” Theatre Company came to Warblington School to perform to our Year 7 and 8 students. The aim of the production was to highlight that we use our rail crossings many times a day and rarely think of the dangers.

The play highlighted the repercussions of making split-second decisions to take a risk and focused on the fatalities of two young people in the Hampshire area. From their

A group of our students were asked to help film a documentary for TV, shown on Meridian Television on 5th February.

“Recently we met with Ian Carter to talk about safety at railway crossings. Ian decided to race under the gates at a crossing near his home and this action caused him to injure himself as he collided with the crossing gates.

He realised that his actions were dangerous and he applied to Fixers (a charity which gives young people the chance to share a safety message) to campaign for funding to make a video to raise awareness around railway safety.

I really enjoyed listening to Ian because it made me think about the dangers of jumping the gates at the crossing.”

HAVANT’S OWN CREMATORIUM ‘THE OAKS’ OPENS Providing a state of the art facility, minimising environmental impact and providing a high standard of service were the key drivers for the Southern Co-operative’s new Crematorium which is now open situated off Bartons Road in Havant.

Designed by Stuart Bone of PWP Architects Ltd, the building appears to rise out of the 8.5 acre landscape, with oak cladding and flint work to the walls and is topped with a green Sedum roof which also gives precious ‘green’ habitat for local flora and fauna.

Bereaved families can choose music from an almost infinite library via the Wesley media service or a digital organ or piano for more traditional services.Visual life tributes of video, photos and music can also be played on large multimedia screens. Family and friends in the UK or anywhere abroad who can’t make the funeral can still view the service via a securely transmitted web cast. All of these audio visual services can also be recorded.

The Oaks can accommodate up to 200 people for a funeral, with seating for 86 in the service hall, which has views through 6 metre high windows, from floor to ceiling, over a private planted courtyard and onto the ancient woodland beyond.

With two cremators capable of accommodating 1.1metre wide coffins and up to 286kg in weight, funerals of larger people now no longer have to travel outside of the local area to complete their funeral which up until now has been the case.

Funeral services last up to 45 minutes 15 minutes longer than the local area has also been used to. Roddy added: “We accommodate traditional religious or secular funeral services here for any culture and ethnicity as well as any other alternative forms of farewell, making it a celebration of a life well lived, rather than the death that has just occurred”

New exciting venture in Waterlooville Radar Testing Site Fears Unfounded By: Chris Davage

Have you heard of a great new idea call Men’s Shed?

It’s a project aimed at retired men aged 55yrs and over who find themselves at a loose end, time on their hands and maybe missing their friends and colleagues from work - members are the most important thing to the success of this group working.

The aim is to be able to open 5 days a week from 9am to 4pm . you can come as little or as much as you want,for as long as you want, the point being it’s your choice, your group run by us for us.

Well I am starting our own local mens shed in the Waterlooville area to give us a chance to have a social get together, but also to be able to do our own projects to make things so we become self sufficient, any type of project would be ideal and would be welcome such as wood-turning, basketwork, bike repairs, making bird boxes and tables, wooden planters or anything you as members can come up with.

Hopefully we will be able to get some funding or grants; also, donations of

materials from local firms, all of which I am working on.

The next important thing is to find a place we can call our own so that we don’t have to fetch and carry tools and the like at the end of each session.

It has to be a very cheap rented place or we can trade time for a space or repairs for the use of space.

If anyone has any such property in or near Waterlooville please consider us, or if you know of such a property kindly let us know.

The concept of a Men’s Shed does come under the health and well-being agenda.

Meon Valley MP George Hollingbery visited a military radar installation on Portsdown Hill following concerns about radiation from the site.

George met with representatives of QinetiQ, who run the unit, to find out more about the work there and if there was any risk to people living nearby. The site is presently conducting trials on the Royal Navy’s new medium range surveillance radar called Artisan 3D, among others systems.

"I had extensive discussions with staff and I was left in no doubt that the company takes its health and safety responsibilities very seriously indeed," explained George.

"It operates a health and safety management system that is regularly reviewed and kept up to date and so I was reassured there is absolutely no risk to those living nearby."

George was told a great deal of work had gone into ensuring that the radars were safe, including making an adjustment in the equipment to lift the radar signals over the
