SKYDIVE SUCCESS

In this day and age, living eco-friendly is becoming increasingly more important if we are to minimise the impact of global warming.

Two of Grainger’s main priorities when developing Berewood were to protect the environment and committing to community consultation. John Beresford, development director of Grainger, says “we are keen to ensure the development has as little negative impact on the natural environment as possible and in fact hope that it might have a net benefit on the local biosphere, which is something that was emphasised in earlier community meetings.”

Brave local woman,Vic Fox, took to the skies recently to complete a charity skydive in aid of local cause, Smile Support & Care, raising £700.

Smile, based in Littlehampton, provides essential respite care to children and young adults with disabilities across Hampshire and West Sussex, and has also launched an Appeal to build a short-break centre in Waterlooville, to offer essential breaks to disabled children and young adults.

Vic works for Smile as a support worker, decided to take on the challenge to celebrate her 30th birthday: “I wanted to do something big, something that I would always remember. So when the opportunity came up to partake in a skydive on behalf of Smile Support & Care I jumped at the chance (no pun intended) - especially as it is on behalf of a cause very close to my heart.”

Vic chose to jump from 15,000ft rather than the standard 10,000ft, which made the jump even more thrilling: “The skydive was an amazing experience and one that I would love to repeat esecially now I know what to expect. Sitting on the edge of the plane about to go over was scary but mind blowing in equal measures. The free fall was terrifying as you lose your bearings, but once the parachute deploys it was lovely, although I did panic about how to land!”

Postcode Publications SOUTH DOWNS COLLEGE HOSTS ITS THIRD ANTIQUES AND COLLECTABLES FAIR South Downs College will host its third Antiques and Collectables Fair on Sunday 3 November.

This unique indoor fair, set within the College campus, has fast become a popular event for buyers, traders and dealers.

All money raised from the fair is reinvested in the College to pay for new equipment, trips or improving facilities for the students. The previous fairs, held in March and July, raised over £3000.

Steve Bull, Premises Manager at South Downs College, said: “It’ll be nice to get an even £5000 for the year”.

He makes sure all stalls sell only antiques or collectables, so there are no bric-a-brac or car-boot sale items at the fair, which means you could find something one-of-akind.

He said, “There will be something for everyone at the fair; from clothes to ceramics, furniture to fabrics, medals to music.

“At the last fair, there was even a vintage pinball machine from the 1950s on sale.

“All in all, the fair is the perfect place to pick up an original gift before the Christmas rush.”

The event will run from 10am-4pm.

Dealers can access the site from 7.30am and Traders from 9am.

Entrance is £1.50 for adults, free for children and £2 for traders, with free parking within the College.

Food and drink is available on site and there is a free ATM on campus, so if you see something you love, you don’t have to worry about running out of money.

Sustainable Living at Berewood Underpinning Grainger’s master plan was the desire to create a long-lasting and socially-enriched place for people to live and work, and homes at Berewood will achieve an impressive Code for Sustainable Homes Level Four. This Code is an environmental impact rating system for housing in England, setting new standards for energy efficiency and sustainability. Nine categories are included in the code: energy efficiency, water efficiency, materials, surface water run-off, waste, pollution, health and well-being, management and ecology.

Bloor Homes, who has been building the first homes at Berewood, has carefully addressed each sustainable category to create environmentally friendly homes at Berewood. For example, energy saving appliances are used throughout the homes, and both wall and loft insulation are fitted throughout. Water saving baths and dual flush toilets are supplied to every property as standard, and all taps and showers are fitted with appropriate flow restrictors to reduce water wastage.

SUDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) At Berewood being environmentally friendly goes beyond the home. From the very start, Grainger has been committed to providing and integrating sustainable features into the Berewood Masterplan.

Chris Fletcher, development project manager at Grainger PLC, says “both the design of the buildings and the open space are driven by sustainable principles that have informed their laying out and construction. Ditches and swales, for example, perform both an important engineering function in attenuating water

flow, while contributing to the high quality of open space. Together they create a setting that the new community can be proud of for many years to come.”

Grainger has incorporated sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) into the Berewood development to prevent flooding and high surface water run-off, and therefore protecting homes and buildings.

In traditional urbanised areas, concrete and tarmac pavements prevent absorption of water into the soil after heavy rainfall.

As a result large amounts of surface water can block drainage systems and increase the chance of flash flooding. SUDS, which include reed channels, retention basins, wetlands and ponds, serve to collect water and prevent it from draining directly at too high of a rate into drains, sewers, streams and rivers. SUDS also act as natural, picturesque landscape features.

Alongside the creation of ponds and reed beds to provide environments that encourage biodiversity, Grainger is involved in restoring the River Wallington, which runs close by the site, and intends to return what is now a concrete channel to its former glory. Also, Grainger has introduced hundreds of new trees to the site, and has planted a widespread use of native species of trees and plants.

From providing a composting bin to each house to planting a variety of trees throughout, Grainger has thoroughly planned how to make Berewood a planetfriendly community today and for generations to come.

The Mystery of Princess Louise a talk by Lucinda Hawksley Waterlooville Library & Learning Centre Tuesday 26 November at 7.30p.m

The secrets of Queen Victoria’s sixth child, Princess Louise, may be destined to remain hidden forever. What was so dangerous about this artistic, tempestuous royal that her life has been documented more by rumour and gossip than hard facts? When Lucinda Hawksley started to investigate, often thwarted by inexplicable secrecy, she discovered a fascinating woman, modern before her time, whose story has been shielded for years from public view.

Louise became a respected sculptor and painter, friend to the Pre-Raphaelites and a keen member of the Aesthetic movement. The feistiest of the Victorian princesses, she kicked against her mother’s controlling nature, sought out other unconventional women, and campaigned for education and health reform and for the rights of women.

Lucinda Hawksley’s biography of Princess Louise, the rebellious daughter of Queen Victoria, grew out of her previous biographies of the artists Lizzie Siddal and Katey Perugini (née Dickens) she was intrigued to discover more about this artistic princess who kept appearing in her research.

Lucinda's other books include March, Women, March: Voices of the Women’s Movement, 50 British Artists You Should Know and What Makes Great Art. Lucinda is a regular speaker at the National Portrait Gallery. She is also a lecturer in literature and art history, an award-winning travel writer and a patron of both the Charles Dickens Museum in London and of the Norwegian Pickwick Club.

Opening Concert of the Season The evening of Thursday 3rd October marked the opening of the new Season of concerts for the Horndean Music Society, which was wonderfully celebrated by a fully costumed concert performance of the great Gilbert and Sullivan favourite, “The Gondoliers”, given by the Havant Light Opera group. Led by Producer, Cathy Hales, and conducted by Musical Director Polly Honeychurch this very talented ensemble of G&S enthusiasts very quickly swept a receptive “house” back to 18th century Venice, with their convincing singing of the well-loved arias and choruses, and their comedic presentation of Gilbert’s timeless humour.

The Duke of Plaza-Toro led his vocally very powerful entourage in a suitably foppish manner. They achieved total command of the libretto and Casilda and the Duchess brought beautiful tone and control to bear in their solo and ensemble pieces. Similarly the suitably anarchic Gondolier brothers and their chosen wives entertained wonderfully with their sung parts and characterisation, which drew well deserved applause from an appreciative audience. To this must also be added the

affable evil with which John Butt presented the Grand Inquisitor. All of the action was very well supported by two major factors.

Firstly there was the indisputably powerful singing from all the voices in the chorus, which led to a performance of great conviction. The second factor was the perfectly balanced musical accompaniment achieved by Paul Mizen who seemed to extract a whole orchestra of sound from the Society’s upright piano!

Great credit is due to the entire company in that they mounted this most impressive and joyful production without benefit of a raised stage, suitable scenery, appropriate lighting, or sound production equipment of any kind. However, Society members and visitors applause amply echoed the Chairman’s closing remarks thanking the Havant Light Opera for a delightful and quite overwhelming opening to the Society’s musical Season.

The next concert is on Thursday 7th November and will be a; PIANO RECITAL given, in a very welcome return to the Society, by local Concert Pianist LAURA DICKSON

CAN YOU HELP 1st CLANFIELD SCOUT GROUP? The successful rebuilding of the Group’s Scout Headquarters, following an arson attack on their original headquarters, has led to an increase in the recruitment of young people.

Numbers in the Beaver, Cub and Scout Sections have all increased since the Headquarters was opened in September 2010 and now waiting lists have been commenced to cope with the growing demand for “Scouting in Clanfield”.

To cope with this growing demand, the Scout Group is anxious to commence a second Scout Troop which will run alongside the existing Troop, sharing programme ideas and activities that are all part of our structured training.

There are “helpers”” ready to assist with the new Troop, but we are in urgent need of a Leader who will assume the overall responsibility of this new proposed additional Troop – age range 10 ½ years to 14 years.

We are also at the moment without an Explorer Scout Section which covers the age range of 14 years to 18 years, so the majority of our boys and girls are lost to scouting when they reach this age because they do not necessarily want to join the

Fireworks Frighten Pets – Top Tips

It’s that time of the year again! From now until New Year our skies will be filled with the sounds of fireworks - lovely for us to watch

but terrifying for lots of pets! A recent survey has shown that a worrying number of pets suffer from firework stress; this often gets worse as the years go on and can lead to other sounds causing stress such as thunder and even slamming of car doors.

Here are some top tips to help your pet cope with the firework season: • Provide a cosy den or hiding place, animals naturally hide when they are scared and it can help them feel more secure if they have a familiar 'safe' place. An indoor kennel covered with blankets is ideal; • Close curtains, shut all doors/windows and move your pet to the centre of the house if possible. Turn on the television and radio; • Keep them inside, take your dog for a walk

before it gets dark if possible. And keep them on a lead at all times, in case a loud bang causes them to run; • Try not to over fuss them, this can be difficult, but this can add to the feeling that 'something is wrong'. Try and keep as calm and normal in yourself as you can.

There are several treatments you can try for your pet: sound desensitisation CDs and DVDs are available and work well but they are for long term use and must be used long before fireworks start.

Medication is also available from your vet, but usually needs to be started a week or so (depending on the drug) before fireworks start so speak to your vet if this is something you want to try. For more information phone Purbrook Vets on 023 9237 1755 or call in to the practice.

YOU’VE GOT TO LAUGH...

Very few days go by where I don’t cry with laughter at something. It’s a wondrous feature of the human body isn’t it. I love a laugh, up until it hurts. I remember going to watch Lee Mack at Portsmouth Guildhall, and my face and jaw were hurting so much I was wishing for the interval. I nearly had to leave. I was getting such a headache.

That’s the point that laughter can be annoying, but let’s be honest, if a comedian is getting to a point where he is so funny, people actually start feeling unwell, then you don’t really have to worry! I’m not there yet!

I’ll often have the day to myself whilst the children are at school and the wife does her ‘proper’ job. I’ll drive to the supermarket or to the petrol station and

I’ll watch the ‘normal’ people on their lunch break or working and thank my lucky stars I’ve got this job. I used to be normal. It was fine. Nothing wrong with it at all, but I think I laughed too much. Messed around and generally enjoyed myself too much for most of my employers’ liking. Comedy seemed to be my release and eventually it released me from the 9 to 5. Probably just as well, before one of my bosses killed me!

I love my job, standing in front of hundreds of people and helping them forget about the 9 to 5. I did it for long enough to know that it’s not always nice, even if the regular pay cheque at the end of the month is something most comedians never get. The only regular thing I get is weight gain, thanks to comedy club bar food!

A joke and a laugh are the best way to let your hair down, and since my hair let me down many years ago, I think the best thing I can do is share my jokes and my love of laughing.

Lorraine Lambert (Great British Disability Shooting Team) gold Medalist and World record holder was at Morrisons Horndean today supporting National Paralympic day.

The customers were allowed to try out her new rifle and under her instruction learnt how to aim and fire. This was the most popular out of the four events that were on offer.

Also availiable was blind football, one handed golf and new age curling. This equipment was kindly lent to us by the Respect Programme in Portsmouth.

Due to Morrisons’ customer’s generosity, a new shooting stand for

the GB shooting progamme can now be purchased.

RURAL CRIME, THEFT OF OIL Now autumn is here and the nights are drawing in thieves will be on the look out for fuel to steal and householders need to make sure they can be thwarted.

Theft of oil is particularly a problem in rural areas, and now the cold nights are not far away this expensive commodity is eyed covetously by these people.

Happily there is a great deal that can be done to discourage this type of crime with Hampshire Constabulary - who has made tackling rural crime a priority - setting out some very useful hints and tips to discourage fuel theft.

1. The location of the tank can have a

significant effect on how hard a target it is in the eyes of the thief. If the tank is close to a road or path and out of sight then it is likely to be a far easier target than if it was near to the house or overlooked by a window.

2. A metal grill or cage with a lockable access point across the top of the wall or fence can help improve security. The wall or fence should be as close to the tank as possible and as high as possible.

3. A thief will also usually come equipped to attack your tank so it is

worth investing in some good quality locks. Closed-shackle padlocks are the best as they offer the most resistance as there is very little of the metal hoop (shackle) exposed for attack.

4. Consider turning off the control switches that control the flow of oil and isolate the electricity when the tank is not in use. In addition, remote electronic oil level gauges are available, which will set off an audible alarm if the oil level in the tank suddenly drops or falls below quarter full. The alarm receiver can

be placed in the house to warn the residents. There are also similar alarms that can notify the residents by text.

5. Low-energy “dusk-to-dawn” lighting positioned close to the tank often provides sufficient lighting to illuminate any suspicious activity if the area is overlooked.

Finally, thieves will be reluctant to force their way through or over prickly vegetation. The smallest trace of blood or shred of ripped clothing could help police identify the offender through DNA. Havant Academy News World Challenge Trip to Morocco – July 2013 On the 11th July 2013 a group of Year 10 and 11 students met at Havant Academy to start their eight day challenge of trekking in the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco.

Although there was an expedition leader supplied by World Challenge and two members of staff on the expedition with us, they took a major step back in order for us students to face the test of developing and using leadership and communication skills that we may require in the future.

As you can imagine, this was out of all of our comfort zones; we were faced with a lot of challenges. None of us had done anything like this before, so we had the chance to really find ourselves. During the expedition we learnt how to overcome new

problems, such as organising the group’s finance and leading the group throughout the day.

We grew as individuals and as a group and discovered more about ourselves. We were able to see how we dealt with different situations and what our strengths and weaknesses were. We learnt about different cultures and saw how people in another country and culture live their lives.

On one day we trekked for 12 hours and climbed to a height of 3400m (over 2½ times the height of Ben Nevis)! We all really enjoyed the expedition and it has opened our eyes to the opportunities of being able to have more adventures in other countries around the world!

How safe is your data?

Many people ask why we need to back up our data? What is data?

Well anything on your computer is classed as ‘data’. The main rule – “have it duplicated in at least one other place”.

This is either another PC, external hard drive or cloud backup. External hard drives are good for the speed of transfer, however if they are stored in the same place as the PC and you have a flood or fire, you will still lose everything. An external backup hard drive is very cost effective solution.

Cloud backup (when you backup online) is very easy to use, however if you need

the backup quickly, you need to ensure a fast broadband connection, or it can take days depending on volume of data.

Cloud backup can be expensive, generally it is charged on a monthly basis per gigabyte.

HEALTH & WELL-BEING Queen Alexandra Hospital ranked first nationally for numbers of patients where key quality standards for hip fracture care are achieved The trust is pleased to announce that it continues to perform better than the national average in the achievement of quality indicators for hip fracture care from the National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) Report 2013.

For patients with hip fractures, care needs to be quickly and carefully organised to get them in a state ready for surgery. By quickly stabilising patients and ensuring that expert clinical teams respond to their frail conditions and complex needs, the most positive outcomes can be achieved. For many patients, best practice care from the moment they arrive at hospital can make the difference between independence or lack of independence, and even life or death.

Equally, the care that patient receives following surgery is just as important, as are the initial days following surgery. This is often where the greatest gains can be made in patient outcomes. The trust treated 736 patients with hip fractures in 2012/13 and in terms of numbers is ranked first against achieving the components of best practice.

Analysis of mortality data for the year from 1st March 2012 has shown Queen Alexandra Hospital to have a better than expected casemix adjusted 30 day mortality.

The Trust has had a Specialist Hip Fracture ward since 2004 and has an experienced Orthogeriatric Consultant supported by a Specialist Orthopaedic team.

Influenza Myth Busting

Most people have some knowledge of the symptoms and effects of the influenza virus and are aware that it can be prevented by vaccination. However, there are still many myths surviving about the impact and treatment of the disease. The following may clarify some of the more common misconceptions.

I've never had flu so won't get it now. I must be immune.

Every year the influenza virus changes it's form so just because you've never had it doesn't mean that you can't be affected this season. Any acquired immunity is short lived.

I was vaccinated last year so I'm protected No! For the reason described above, the vaccine has to be formulated each year according to the new strains.

I won't have the vaccine because it gives you the flu Impossible! The virus in the vaccine is dead and simply boosts immunity.You may experience slight fever and some pain at the injection site.

If I get the flu I'll take antibiotics No! Antibiotics do not work against viruses.

Having flu is just like a cold, I'll be OK Whoever says this has never had flu! You

are likely to spend at least 2-3 days in bed with a temperature of 40C (104F) and serious aches and pains. Every year I vaccinate people who say they had flu last year and never want it again.

I take vitamin C to prevent the flu There is no evidence to support this claim.

I can't have the vaccine, I'm pregnant Yes you can and you should. It will protect you and your baby during pregnancy and in the early months of life.

Why bother with vaccination, flu won't kill me It probably won't if you are fit and healthy but you will have an unpleasant time for several days. The elderly and those with chronic illnesses such as asthma or diabetes may suffer serious complications requiring hospitalisation.

Publications’ Readers… tips and exercises from our Olympic Physio Natalie March, Chartered Physiotherapist: It has been an exciting time here at Physio-logical, we have just celebrated our three year anniversary of our clinic based within Active4less, New Lane, Havant. Also, Sara Barker our new physiotherapist and acupuncturist started with us in July 2013, so we are now offering more evening and daytime appointments.

This edition I thought we’d focus on your shoulders. I have noticed lots of people playing tennis, golf, swimming, playing throw and catch with their children/grandchildren in the park, doing heavy gardening tasks and DIY all of which can lead to a problem with your shoulder called “Rotator Cuff Impingement Syndrome”. Here are some exercises to help to stretch and strengthen the correct muscles to help with this problem. It is a very complex syndrome so it is better to be assessed by a chartered physiotherapist who can prescribe an individual exercise programme and treatment plan.

Impingement syndrome is more likely to occur in people who engage in physical activities that require repeated overhead arm movements. Common symptoms include: • An arc of shoulder pain approximately when your arm is at shoulder height and/or when your arm is overhead.

• Shoulder pain that can run from the top of the shoulder to the elbow.

• Pain when lying on the sore shoulder.

• Muscle weakness or pain when attempting to reach or lift.

• Pain reaching for the seat-belt.

Pectoral Stretch You may be more likely to develop rotator cuff problems if the front of your shoulder is tight.

• Stand at end of wall or in doorway • Place inside of bent arm on surface of wall and position the bent elbow at shoulder height • Walk forwards and turn body away from positioned arm.

• Hold for thirty seconds repeat twice, three times a day.

Squat + Shoulder Elevation with Yellow Theraband This is an exercise to start to strengthen the rotator cuff this should only be done once you have full shoulder movement and should be undertaken pain free.

Tie the yellow theraband in a loop: • Push out with your hands with a static and constant pressure against the theraband • As you squat down (keeping knees in line with the second toe) you push out against the theraband and take your arms up above your head.

• Repeat three times fifteen, two times a day.

• Remember this exercise should be pain free.

HEALTH & WELL-BEING Queen Alexandra Hospital carried out 78 kidney transplants in 2012/13 At Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, 78 patients received a life-saving or enhancing transplant during 2012/13, according to figures published in NHS Blood and Transplant’s Organ Donation and Transplantation Activity Report 2012/13.

The total number of kidney transplants increased by 7% in 2012-2013 in the UK, translating to a total of 2998 kidney transplants. The Queen Alexandra Hospital accounted for 2.6 % of all kidney transplant operations carried out across the UK. The Portsmouth and Wessex renal transplant centre performed 27 living kidney transplants. Across the UK during 2012/13 there were 1,101 living donors, a 4% increase on the previous year.

At the end of March 2013, 235 of Queen Alexandra Hospital patients were on the waiting list for a kidney transplant.

Without organ donation there cannot be transplantation, and every day across the UK around 3 people die in need of an organ transplant.

51 people donated their organs upon their death in the Portsmouth region. There were 1,212 deceased organ donors across the UK. Sam Dutta, consultant transplant surgeon at Queen Alexandra Hospital said: “We’re delighted by the number of lives we have saved through a kidney transplant at our hospital last year.

“Centres such as ours are only able to

perform live-saving transplant operations if people are willing to be donors and we are extremely grateful to the 51 deceased donors from Portsmouth who helped save the lives of people across the UK in the last year. Their families should be very proud that they agreed to donation going ahead.

Sally Johnson, Director of Organ Donation and Transplantation at NHS Blood and Transplant said: “Queen Alexandra Hospital has continued to make a vital contribution to saving lives through transplantation.”

“If you have not thought about organ donation, we urge you to support it and sign up to be a donor. Join the NHS Organ Donor Register and tell your loved ones

your decision. It’s really important your family knows that you have given your consent for donation, and that they then go on to support your decision if they are approached on your behalf when you pass away.”

“Family consent if our biggest challenge, as four out of ten families refuse donation when approached. Fewer than 5,000 people die in the UK each year in circumstances where they could donate, so every potential donor truly is precious.

Help in Bereavement

Help in Bereavement is a small Charity, wholly supported by Grants and Donations, founded nearly 35 years ago to meet the needs of bereaved people of any race, creed, gender or age, in the Portsmouth Diocese. Over the years it has expanded and now serves an area from Emsworth to Fareham, Gosport, Hayling Island and Havant to Petersfield.

Trained Visitors give their time voluntarily to provide a service which is free to those in need. In recent years a

specialist section has been introduced, to give help and support to children at the request of their parents, schools, Doctors, or Social Services and are usually visited in their schools during school hours.

Not everyone wants a visit on a one to one basis but would prefer to meet others in a similar position and with this in view there is now a Social Club which meets from 10.am until noon in St. George’s Church Hall, Waterlooville the second Monday of every month for coffee, tea and light refreshments, (there is a small charge for this). Outings are arranged to places of

interest and these have included a visit to a Buddhist Monastery at Chithurst, Stansted House, Hinton Ampner and Lordington Lavender.

New Visitors are usually recruited at an Open Evening in July and training starts in September after which everyone is officially checked by the appropriate departments to safeguard the vulnerable.

Food and Wine Wine of the Month

Martini Asti Sparkling Wine Thing is though, is it to be ‘sparkling wine’ or Champagne, to celebrate those special occasions with, that’s the question? A struggle faced by many a couple planning to get married, especially if they are on a limited budget. Or as one couple put it to me: “Not that we normally like Champagne much. Not a lot to it, as far as we’re concerned; bland, insipid, not much taste.

Sorry about that…. Would far rather go for a decent sparkling wine! Though we did taste some fairly nice Champagne at a friend’s wedding, once. Only to find out that it cost an absolute fortune at over £75 a bottle! But why is Champagne supposed to be so different, is what we’d like to know?

Because, personally, we can’t understand what all the fuss is about!”

OUCH! Okay then… I suppose, to be honest, a lot to do with why Champagne is acclaimed to the extent it is, throughout the world, as being ‘the’ drink to celebrate with on special occasions, is, dare I suggest, largely the result of clever, astute and hugely successful marketing over the past 250 years or so, in associating Champagne with everything to do with celebrity, wealth, privilege, luxury and exclusivity! And, so it is today! The most celebrated event to take place, most recently, being the birth of baby George to Prince William and Catherine, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, on the 22nd of July. And where the sound of Champagne corks ‘popping’ could be heard up and down the country. No less so than in Catherine’s home village of Bucklebury, in Berkshire.

And that, despite what people might or might not think of Champagne as a drink in itself!

So, what does make Champagne different from any other sparkling wine, if at all? For that’s just what Champagne is, a sparkling wine! Or is it that we are mostly paying for the name, as some people insist?

Well, firstly, the most important thing to remember is that the name Champagne can only refer to sparkling wines that come

exclusively from the Champagne region of France, and are made in a renowned centuries-old traditional way; including, from a blend of three main varieties of grape native to the region: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Sparkling wines from anywhere else, on the other hand, and which may have been produced using different types of grape, cannot, under any circumstances, be called Champagne!

That’s the law! It’s strictly forbidden, at least in Europe; albeit these wines may be similar in nature. And there are plenty of superb examples to choose from. Even so, there are still countries around the world yet to come to an agreement. And even the United States makes exceptions, allowing certain wineries to use the word ‘Champagne’ when accompanied by the place of origin, as in ‘California Champagne’.

But then, what are people actually saying when expressing their preference for a ‘decent sparkling wine’ over the ‘official’ sparkly stuff, like the couple above? Is it, perhaps, because they are not keen on dry wines, in general, which Champagne on the whole is? And, that ‘sparkling wines’ offer a wider range of tastes and flavours which appeal far more to the modernday palate? Perhaps!

So, what’s it going to be, my fifth wine of the month, this time for special occasions?

Well, after a few ‘very punishing’ tasting sessions, I am going to be a ‘REBEL’ and come down on the side of a ‘sparkling wine’, and affordably, with: Martini Asti, as pictured. Asda price, at the time of printing: £6.00 per bottle. Sparklingly luscious! But then, this is what I suggested for my best mate’s engagement party, instead of Champagne. And to everyone’s surprise, they were asking for top-ups! So, success all round…

The Adventure ends here: Sadly, however, this is my last article as I am moving away from the area. But I do hope you’ve enjoyed them. Because, for me, it has certainly been an interesting and challenging experience! And I hope my passion for wine has inspired you.

Spicy Roasted Butternut Squash and Lentil Soup This month’s recipe is a very tasty and filling soup which is lovely to serve as a hearty, healthy lunch option or as a soup starter for your next dinner party.

You can vary the amount of spice added to make it more child friendly but the beauty of this soup is how I have made it by roasting the butternut squash in a deep roasting pan, along with whole cloves of garlic and onions to enhance the flavours.

Ingredients: 1 whole butternut squash 6 cloves of garlic 2 onions 1 cup of red lentils 1 vegetable stock cube 2 tablespoons of cumin powder 1 tablespoon of coriander powder 1 tsp of paprika 1 tsp of chilli powder (optional) 2-3 tbsp olive oil Fresh coriander leaves for garnish 1 to 1.5 litres of water/ stock/ liquid from the cooking the lentils Pepper and salt to season 3 to 4 tbsp Lemon juice to taste To do: 1. Wash and soak lentils in cold water overnight.

Add 2.5 cups of water to 1 cup of lentils after washing.

2. Before cooking lentils rinse off water that it has been soaking in. Make up 1 litre vegetable stock.

Cook the lentils until soft in a saucepan with lid.

Making sure that there is sufficient liquid and the lentils do not boil dry. This will take 20 to 30 minutes of cooking. If using a pressure cooker the cooking time can be reduced to 10 minutes.

When the cooking has been completed skim off any grey foam that has accumulated.

3. Peel butternut squash. Cut in half and then in quarters. Remove seeds and pith. Cut into cubes roughly 3 cms. Place butternut squash in deep baking tray and add 1.5 tbsp. of olive oil. Place garlic cloves with skin on and sprinkle on butternut squash- 1 tbsp. cumin and coriander, 1 tsp paprika and chilli if using and season with pepper and salt.

4. Place butternut squash in preheated oven on fan 180 degrees and cook for 30 minutes. Cut onion into 8th’s and add 10 minutes before end of cooking time. Add 1 tbsp. of olive oil and return to the oven.

5. Add the roasted butternut to the cooked lentil and blend using hand blender. Add 2 tbsp. cumin, lemon juice and season with pepper and salt. If the consistency of the soup is too thick more hot water can be added.

6. Serve with fresh coriander leaves as a garnish and enjoy with thick cut bread of your choice.

FOCUS ON PHOTOGRAPHS AT THE MERIDIAN CENTRE Come along and see an outstanding display of images from UK photographers on show on the first floor gallery at the Meridian Centre from Saturday 23rd November until Sunday 1st December inclusive.

This is the 43rd National Open Exhibition organised by Havant Camera Club and will showcase the best in colour, monochrome and nature prints as well as a continually looped digitally projected show.

The 500 images on display will have been selected by three judges from an entry of around 2,000.

Many of the photographs are very creative; others more traditional. But overall the exhibition has a good balance of all types of photography. Also on show will be a display of prints by members of Havant Camera Club.

Award-winning portrait artist exhibits at the Oxmarket in Chichester The Oxmarket Centre of Arts in Chichester hosts an exhibition featuring the work of Polish artist Agata Wojcieszkiewicz from 14th to 27th of October. It’s free and open to the public from Tuesday until Sunday 10am – 4:30pm. The private view will take a place on Monday 14th October at 6pm.

Agata in her studio The exhibition presents Agata’s unique contemporary approach to portraiture and will include a range of paintings and drawings created within last three years including self-portraits, paintings of friends and family as well as commissioned works.

Agata is a figurative painter specialising in oil and acrylic technique, professionally based at Making Space Community Arts Centre in Leigh Park in Havant.

In 2011 she graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk in Poland with an MA in Fine Art Painting. Within a year she won the First Prize and Visitor’s

Choice Prize at The Stride Open Art Competition at Oxmarket Centre of Arts showing a portrait of her father.

In 2012 – 2013 her portrait of an artist friend, Anita Bell, was exhibited in The National Portrait Gallery in London, Edinburgh and Exeter as a part of BP Portrait Award.

Agata said: “My art is like a journal – a reflection of the very intimate process of picturing memories and emotions.” Being an immigrant, she paints people as representatives of two cultures, trying to distinguish the results of historical and cultural influences that shaped her subjects’ lives as well as her own.

Agata’s latest portraits are very narrative and intricately painted, with rich backgrounds seeming to be overtake her compositions. She tells stories by capturing people within their everyday life surroundings to show how the environment defines their personalities, habits, living and working routines.

Rural businesses are having something of a renaissance in Hampshire with a trend for more local produce and services really starting to make it presence felt in our villages.

This upbeat forecast is perhaps just a little reversal in the inexorable decline of the rural community over the last 100 years and it is something I care passionately about and I do my best to champion both locally and in Parliament.

Before the Great War, most people would have found everything they need within their own village but urban centres became predominant and now we think nothing of a trip into Portsmouth and Winchester to buy goods while the cottage industries have all but disappeared. Or have they?

Over the last decade, I have started to detect a bit of a welcome change in our attitudes. I am not saying for one moment

that we are going to return to a traditional village life with every community having a butcher or a candlestick maker, but local is once again on the menu - albeit in a 21st century way.

As an example, about a month ago I visited the award-winning Upham Brewery near Bishop's Waltham. Upham is one of the fastest growing breweries in the South of England and plans to create up to 500 jobs in the next couple of years - many in the Hampshire countryside.

The firm has seen its sales increase by more than 120% since its launch as a microbrewery with a real ethos that the best place for it to do business is in the rural community - something it may not have considered worthwhile just ten years ago.

Upham's story is a familiar one being repeated up and down the country as local business and small family firms tap into this resurgent desire for local produce.

thriving thanks to this rediscovery of a taste for traditional fare aided by the Internet and rural superfast broadband - now so vital to the countryside. And don't forget low tech initiatives like farmers' markets and the impact they have had.

Even the decline of the village pub - which was always seen as inevitable - is beginning to slow.

In places like Denmead, a campaign is underway to save the Fox and Hounds and restore it to its former status as a village hub rather than to see it redeveloped for houses.

If the campaign is successful, I very much hope to have rural surgeries there.

Our area is also dotted with innumerable plant nurseries, small holdings and agribusinesses which are acting as the engine for and benefitting from this boom in demand for rural supplies.

I am delighted to see our firms benefitting from this upturn in demand. Long may it continue.

We are actively seeking to extend these activities and could easily accommodate new classes for martial arts, bridge, line dancing , Zumba, crafts, band practices, choirs, and will work with clubs or organisers who want to start a new class in their special area of interest.

Letter to the Editor from Carol Dilley

I am grateful for the opportunity to mention the Waterlooville Foodbank. I am keen to promote the organisation as we need all the help we can to try and make a difference to those in our own communities who are in need.

Clanfield Crafts acts as a point where anybody wishing to donate any food can do so at our fayres. I also support the Rowans's Hospice and hold a donation box for our events whereby whilst we do not charge anyone admission to the fairs we welcome donations to the Rowans Denmead branch where care can be given to those of limited life illnesses in their own homes.

We have only been collecting at Clanfield since July and have already handed over £40 for this cause. We are proud to help local charities in addition to bringing these events to the area which have proved very popular. There are many people who often see very few people in their day to day lives and we have found that Clanfield Crafts has given something back to the community whereby they can come along and meet people and shop for their gifts too.

They stop and enjoy tea and cake and a nice chat. It is so lovely to see the same people come time and time again and enjoy stopping and chatting to all our lovely stall holders.

I come from a background in nursing & I wanted to find a way of helping people and also enjoying my passion for the Arts &

Crafts. From doing my voluntary work with the foodbank and running Clanfield Crafts with my daughter I have found a great sense of satisfaction and giving.

We have so much local talent and many are afraid to take that step and showcase their work and Clanfield Crafts gives them the opportunity to be in the spotlight and help them to pursue; if they wish, their love of art and crafts.

With so many regular stallholders and experience to share it has given great leverage to people who are new and to see them flourish and spread their wings doing what they enjoy is just such a great sense of satisfaction for us as organisers.

My daughter Jacqui and I thoroughly enjoy the events and already we have all the dates for next year booked for the fayres.

I am also an exhibiting artist and I recently had an open studio at my house as part of the Horndean Cultural Trail and I also take part in the annual May Days Arts Trail across Hayling, Havant & Waterlooville. This year I will be on the publicity end for Waterlooville and Havant so I hope I can publicise the Arts Trail next year with Postcode Publications.

Yoga For Cyclists

After Britain’s great cycling success in the past few years from The Tour De France, 2012 Olympics and The Tour Of Britain many of us are turning to cycling to improve our own fitness. Whether we are choosing road, track or mountain bikes, joining cycling clubs, taking part in races or just cycling for fun with our friends we all need that little extra help.

Many cyclists are turning to yoga to

help reduce muscle tightness from logging long hours in the saddle. A yoga class focusing on flexibility, core strength and balance can be the perfect cross-training workout for not only the avid cyclist but the weekend social cyclist too.

In cycling, the quadriceps, hamstrings, and hips never rest. As a result, riders often have overdeveloped quadriceps and tight hamstrings, which can pull the hips out of alignment. Also, a cyclist's spine is constantly flexed forward. If a correct cycling position isn't maintained, it can result in muscle pain and strain in the back and shoulders.

Yoga helps ease the tightness, creating core strength, and aligning the spine. It also helps improve balance, body awareness and muscle control, all of which will make you a better cyclist.

Missing piece appeal Smile Support & Care, a local charity providing support to children and young adults with disabilities, is calling on the public to support their Missing Piece Appeal, to raise urgently-needed funds towards a new centre being built in Waterlooville, Hampshire.

Construction is now underway but the charity urgently needs more funds to help complete the build and purchase specialist furnishings. Donations and fundraising could help buy items such as toys, cushions and PCs, to services such as specialist therapy or a night’s care.

“The aim of the centre is to offer breaks to disabled children and young adults, as well as providing them and their families with a place to enjoy precious time together. Most people tend to take short breaks for granted, but when there is a child in the family requiring specialist care and attention, this is not easily arranged and can be unaffordable.” Steven Clarke, Smile chairman With all the amenities of a small hotel, the centre will feature eight en-suite bedrooms, plus two family apartments, a restaurant-style dining room, state-of-theart sensory room, physiotherapy and treatment room, specially planted gardens

to encourage sensory stimulation and a safe play area with specialist equipment.

While the centre will provide the perfect break for individuals, it will also give them the opportunity to meet with others who share the same experiences.

“The new respite centre will be a huge benefit to families like ours” - Louise, mum to eight-year-old Joel who has severe autism.

Access to a regular break is the help most requested by families of disabled children, and has been identified as a key factor in helping families stay together.

However, despite the urgent need for respite, a recent UK survey found that huge numbers of disabled children are still

Smile Support & Care is a regional charity, founded in 1994 to provide muchneeded help to families with disabled children and young adults living in Hampshire and West Sussex.

More than 160 highly-trained members of staff deliver thousands of hours of care per month, to over 300 disabled children and young adults.

The care and support provided varies widely from family to family, from those with children who have the milder forms of autism to those with chronic life-limiting conditions such as cystic fibrosis. Some parents need a few hours a week to allow them to do the weekly shop without the worry of looking after a disabled child, and perhaps give the child an outing to the swimming pool. For those children with more complex disabilities, our highly trained staff can provide 24 hour care involving medicine administration, tube feeding and intensive physiotherapy.

New Havant business aims to slash the cost of replacing tyres By: Becky Lewis

A business in Havant has started up to offer a safer, more cost effective way of maintaining tyres to both domestic and commercial customers.

Nigel Weller, who is from Rowlands Castle, offers his new Puncture Safe service to anyone living the PO postcode area that may want to protect themselves against the burdens of heavy costs associated with replacing tyres after a puncture.

Mr Weller, whose background is in the agricultural industry, identified a need to help large vehicles protect their expensive tyres from frequent replacement. This was something that not only impacted on time but was also a considerable cost to the business.

“Tractors, trucks and lorries often suffer from punctures due to the nature of their work and replacing tyres is expensive” Said Mr Weller. “Therefore, I decided something had to be done to keep the costs down – that was where Puncture Safe came in”.

The Winners!

The Forest of Bere Bowmen's Outdoor Championship took place on Sunday 8th September at their Club field

by Cadlington House off Blendworth Lane, Horndean (PO8 0AA). The early starters were greeted by a storm sending everybody scuttling for cover. However the storm soon gave way to periods of pleasant sunshine.

The competing bowmen ranged from 10 years to 80 plus. Among the bows in use at the Championship were the recurve bows used in the Olympics.

Others were compound bows or longbows.

The photograph shows all of the prize-winners. John Taylor, shooting recurve was Archer Supreme, with Tim Madden next having returned to archery after a gap of many years. Hettie Parkes won the trophy for Ladies Recurve with

husband Shane winning the Novice Recurve prize. With daughters Tessa and Megan winning medals and Hettie and Shane winning the Married Couples Trophy, it was an impressive competition for the Parkes family.

Other winners were John Davies (Gentlemens Longbow), Gill Merrett (Ladies Longbow), Rebecca Giddings (Junior Recurve), Sean Madden (Junior Recurve for younger juniors) and Vince Ibbs on a handicap adjusted score. Others in the photograph won silver and bronze medals.

Everybody enjoyed themselves and most competed again later in September in the last of the summer monthly medals.

Hawks Report - Latest Updates About a quarter of the way through the season and the Hawks have had mixed results which have seen them locked in mid-table. After a very promising opening and a three match unbeaten run, a series of injuries affected results. Goalkeeper Scott Bevan, Striker Dennis Oli, Midfielder Christian Nanetti and Central defender Ed Harris have all been out. Boss Lee Bradbury with only a small squad has therefore had to turn to the short-term loan market and adjust the way of playing to see the crisis through.

With the injured players now gradually returning results and performances are starting to get back on track. Unfortunately the qualifying rounds of the FA Cup came in the midst of the injury crisis and the Hawks failed to negotiate their way through.

Of the local Havant based youngsters, Charlie Searle made his league debut at age 17 against Bishops Stortford. Joe Noakes is out on loan to AFC Totton, where he has performed well, including scoring a goal.

Harry Wedlake has had little chance with the first team but has lead the Academy side through the early rounds of the FA Youth Cup. With the side nearly back to full strength and playing the way Lee Bradbury wishes results are beginning to pick up again. In the expectation of a steady move back up the table now is a good time to get down to Westleigh Park and enjoy the action.

There is still a bit of a points gap between Havant and the teams immediately above them but the team is galvanizing as a unit and looking capable of making up the gap and moving up the league. Ladies Sabre Fencing Beginner Course Seacourt Fencing Club, based on Hayling Island, is looking for ladies of all ages with a sense of adventure, a spirit of enthusiasm and a positive attitude to come and learn the art of fencing sabre.

Modern fencing has three weapons: foil, épée and sabre. The sabre is a cutting weapon and fights are notoriously fast, furious and fun! Only thirty years ago, sabre was mainly fenced by men, so there are fewer women who fence sabre than foil or épée. Seacourt Fencing Club wants to redress the balance!

Fencing is a great way to keep fit, burning far more calories than an aerobics class, but it is also skilful and mentally challenging. Older fencers can be just as successful as younger ones by relying on their wits rather than their fitness. Unlike most sports, fencing has a thriving veterans section which holds competitions in age

ranges from 40 year olds, right up to 80+ If you want to take up the challenge of becoming a sabre fencer, book yourself onto our six week Ladies Sabre Beginner Course. This is a relaxed course, with the emphasis on fun, giving you an introduction to sabre fencing. Havant Hockey Club – Early Season Report

The seventh annual National Watersports Festival was held from 13-15 September in fantastic weather off Hayling Island seafront near the Golf Club. This year it was extended to include Kayaking and Kite Surfing alongside SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding) and Windsurfing. It resulted in a spectacular weekend.

The fun started on Friday with a decent sea breeze over a sparkling sea ideal for spectators and the novices and intermediates for which the first day’s event was aimed. Conditions were perfect for the SUP’s and Kayakers and made for a fun opening day! The experienced windsurfers were hoping for more wind on Saturday and Sunday, the main racing days.

The next day saw the spectacle of hundreds of brightly coloured windsurf sails lined up on the shore before heading out to sea for the racing. Adults and children on windsurfers, kayaks and SUPs were splashing around in the sparkling surf near the shore or learning new skills in the taster sessions. Some took part in the racing. Flags, banners, kites, vans, tents and trade stalls packed with the latest equipment created a vibrant, colourful scene. Even Father Christmas appeared in one windsurf race!

There was also the spectacle of the Night Windsurf, a unique tradition of NWF, with a race for honours between the best from the day’s races. Children, decked out in glow sticks, each teamed up with a professional windsurfer for their own a tag race out to a scary, eerily lit marker buoy.

The grand finale, to a backdrop of fireworks, was the tow-in freestyle

demonstration by world class professional windsurfers, including 5 times World Champion Gollito Estredo. The dare devil riders accelerated their roaring jet skis to terminal velocity and suddenly materialised from the darkness into the floodlights to perform spectacular multiple jumps, twists and loops, before the large crowd on the beach.

The spectacle and atmosphere at this years NWF was truly amazing. With over 600 competitors across the disciplines, ranging up to age 70, and 8000 attending the weekend event and parties, the vibe was

ahead of the season proper.

Whilst the Hockey Clubhouse is situated in Havant Park, the main pitch lays nearby in the grounds of Havant College in Barncroft Way Havant.

The Men’s 1 team play in the EHL Conference West League and their next home league game is against University of Exeter, with bully-off at 14.00. The Ladies 1 play in South Division 1 and their next home game is against Southgate on 16 November, starting at 13.30. Both of these games will be held at the Havant College pitch.

The Club also has a strong junior section catering for boys and girls from under 8 years through to under 18. The under 8 and under 10 groups are mixed.

For many of the boys and girls joining the Club it is the beginning of very long connections with the Club.

Hayling St Andrews Football Club

laid back good humour, friendship and camaraderie. Professional and recreational riders mingled ashore and on the water.

The two night parties were especially enjoyed as everyone rocked throughout the balmy evenings.

Ian and Carole, of the ‘Inn on the Beach’ at Hayling Island, where the action centred, said “It’s great having a bunch of people focused on enjoying themselves. The Watersports community are great and it was nice to have the kite, kayak and SUP people alongside the windsurfing guys. We really enjoyed this year; best yet!”

Importantly, more than £5000 was raised for the charity W4CR (Watersports for Cancer Research).

Havant Hockey Club began its preparations for the 2013/14 season back in August with evening sessions every Tuesday. The pre-season training sessions were well attended from the Clubs large membership. The pre-season also saw a successful 6 week ‘Return to Hockey Course’ for the many wishing to get back to playing.

Jenny Bullard told me: ‘The Club has six women’s teams, 9 men’s teams and some 250 youngsters from 4 – 18 years.

All of the training, preparation and arrangements for the variety of Hockey fixtures undertaken during the busy season, which commenced in September with a number of friendlies, are backed up and supported by a strong and experienced team of non-playing members.’

The friendlies held in the weeks before the season proper got underway in the middle of September, enabled the various playing squads and groups to get match fit

Hayling Park on the Saturday morning of my visit to this vibrant Club was full of small groups of excited youngsters enjoying football practice. I was greeted by the Club Chairman, Mark Carter. Over a mug of tea and a sponsored cupcake in the Clubhouse next to the Hayling Community Centre, the Chairman explained how the Club, now in it’s fifth season, had risen from the ashes into a successful Junior Football Club.

We were soon out amongst the many young players practicing and having fun.

Mark explained that each age group was led by an FA Level 1 or 2 qualified Coach.

The aim is always to ensure that the Saturday mornings are fun and energetic.

While the youngsters are on the field enjoying their group work, parents and Club members relax in and around the Clubhouse. The Clubhouse keeps everyone fed and watered and at the same time generates income to help support the on field activities and local charities.

The Club is built around family involvement, fair play and charity fund raising. In the 2012/13 season it was fitting that the Club received a fair play award from the Portsmouth Youth League. Should parents have any concerns the Club has experienced Parent Representatives with

access to the Coaches and Club Officials The teams all play in the Portsmouth Youth Leagues for under 8, 10 and12’s.

For those too young for league games a number of friendly games are arranged.

The experienced FA qualified Head Coach, Stuart Hawley, runs the senior under 12 team and leads the Club’s coaching and development programme, ensuring there is always a strong team of FA qualified coaches at the Club. The Club is always looking recruit others willing to assist and qualify as FA coaches.

Most of the youngsters at the Club were boys but when I asked the Chairman and the coaches, they were unanimous in their wish to encourage more girls to join the club. Girls are eligible to play in any of the Clubs existing teams.

Anyone interested in coaching and any parents with young children, including girls, wishing to experience football are invited to contact the Club.

MAKING SPACE Making Way for Making Space Making Space was set up in 2005 and had to beg borrow and steal various venues where it could run its workshops in art, craft and design: Empty venues such as Bedhampton Arts Centre, proved to be the perfect place where people in the community could come together and take part in jewellery making and ceramic designing classes.

Today, the organisation has grown into a fully-fledged team and a brand new building right next to the Greywell Centre in Havant. It is run by a team of four at the purpose built centre where there are 2 teaching spaces.

The project was recently awarded lottery heritage funding and Making Space have begun work on “On the Street Where I Live” which encourages people to express what it is like to live in their community.

The purpose was to explore and celebrate life in Leigh Park from its early development as a housing estate in the 1940’s right up until the present day.

Many residents have come together to bring the area’s history to life. It also gives everyone an opportunity to come together for a fun, friendly and FREE activity. The project have also started the “Memory Box” scheme, where people living in the area can collect together items that

generate memories so that the stories of each box can be shared, stimulating conversation with others.

Making Space is an on-going project, and everybody involved works tirelessly to make sure it carries on providing a service to the community.

Projects are on-going and more information can be found on the website www.makingspace.org. As a taster, upcoming workshops include two that run on Saturday 9th November. One is a session creating up-cycled ceramics and china. – a fantastic chance for participants to reinvent old china making it into something beautiful again.

There is also a crochet workshop running called 'Trim It', which teaches those attending decorative trims and how to edge a garment.

To make your Christmas decoration you will need: Step 1

Step 1 Firstly print off your template on thin card, cut it out, then use it to draw an outline on the wrong side of your fabric square. Place the two squares of fabric right sides together. Do not cut out the shape at this stage.

Step 2

Step 3 Stitch with your machine along the marked line, leaving the bottom of the tree trunk unstitched to allow for turning and stuffing.

Step 4

Cut away the excess fabric leaving about 1/4".

Step 4 Turn right sides out, push out the points of the tree, stuff firmly and sew the bottom edges of the trunk together, turning in the raw edges to keep it neat.

Havant Contemporary Dance

Havant Contemporary Dance is a new community dance outfit. Our mission is to provide classes and workshops which allow us to explore the ways in which the body moves, create equal opportunities for everyone to take part and inspire communities.

This half term our junior class looked at the season autumn. Our workshops have explored the changing landscape along with the weather, and seasonal festivities such as Harvest and Halloween. These topics have been used as starting points which allowed the children to interpret their own ideas into dance movement vocabulary. Although we discover through dance, we feel it is important to aid a child’s ‘whole’ learning experience and therefore incorporate other art forms in our workshops such as storytelling, poems reading, music making and art activities; all of which relate to our current topic. As part of our autumn discovery, the children explored the meaning of ‘Harvest Festival’

Children who attended our harvest workshop and made vegetable people during our craft section of our workshop

and the importance of sharing and helping people in need. As Sharing and Helping became our stimulus for creating dance, the children also began a collection of food which Havant Contemporary Dance then donated to ‘The Beacon’ our local food bank.

Well, almost every client I've ever met will tell you what they think they want, because they have very rarely worked out what they actually need, they also often tell us that they are comfortable with their investments going up and down! Usually what they actually mean is they are comfortable with the ups, but not so much when they go down. Now as professional Independent Financial Advisers, we have to be truthful with our clients at all times, which means always telling them the truth.

Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre Hello, its Giggles again. The Out and Abouter at The Cat and Rabbit Rescue, Sidlesham. Well, we’ve just had our fete and it brought in lots and lots of visitors, which was excellent considering it poured down with rain at the start I thought I would tuck myself in under the hedge and watch the goings on, but Monique had other ideas and told Claire to put me indoors so that I didn’t misbehave. (I was not impressed) Probably it

was because I am now famous, people would want my paw print!

Lenny Longlegs is my very best mate. We used to hang about together till his sight started to go, so he now lives in the posh new garden room with some of the other cats. I usually pop along to see him in the evenings to tell him what’s been happening, as he likes to know how many of our friends have been rehomed. He is very worried about the amount of kittens that keep him awake at night (playing about and dreaming of all the fun they could have with a

loving family). I told Lenny that I would mention to my readers that there are about 200 kittens and 100 cats here and they all looking for that forever home.

I asked Lenny why there are so many kittens this year, and he told me that it was because people just do not get their cats neutered even though the kind people here will help with costs if necessary, and that is why we have this huge number

of kittens.

Postcode Publications IN CELEBRATION OF THE NURSERY RHYME TILES Hayling Island Bowls Club

By: Jane Gregory – Volunteer in Education and Marketing - The Spring On Friday 6 September a special event was held at The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre to celebrate the restoration of the War Memorial Nursery Rhyme Tiles.

Staff, volunteers and distinguished guests met to view the ten panels of tiles and share their memories. The Royal Doulton tiles were installed in the hospital’s children’s ward in 1936; it was named the Jubilee Ward to mark the Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary.

The tiles were designed by William Rowe, whose initials can be seen at the bottom of the ‘Little Jack Horner’ tile.

Among the visitors on 6 September were Nicholas and Diana Rowe; Nicholas is William Rowe’s grandson, and he commented: “I just remember my grandfather, William Rowe, and it’s wonderful that Havant has saved these tiles. He spent his whole life painting, both at Doultons and as a hobby, and these nursery rhyme tiles really were the pinnacle of his career. We were delighted that we were able to be here, representing a family who are all very proud of their grandfather.”

The Spring was pleased to welcome many other guests to the exhibition, including Dave Willetts MP, Deputy Mayor Councilor Marjorie Small and Mrs Virginia Wilson-Smith, Councilor Jackie Branson, and Mr Roger Harrison, Chairman of

Trustees. The Spring’s Director, Ms Sophie Fullerlove, addressed the assembled guests and thanked them for their support.

Visitors to the celebration were invited to write comments in a notebook, and there many remarkable memories were shared. They included this from Mrs Ann Darby, who worked as clinical manager at the War Memorial Hospital from 1992–2000: “Although it seemed inappropriate to have such childish images in a ward for adults and older people, many of the older people expressed what comfort the tiles brought them through their local connections and recollections.”

And from Audrey Fryer: “In December 2011 – a very icy period – I was cared for for two weeks in the former children’s ward. The delightful nursery rhyme tiles were great joy. The elderly lady in the next bed had watched the hospital being built. She had been a Miss Carroll; her father was the architect and builder. She was sad that we were almost the last patients.”

President’s Day

The summer of 2013 has proved to be just about perfect if you are a bowler. All of our major events have enjoyed ideal weather and it has been a pleasure to be on the green, unlike some previous years when bowling was more a test of fortitude and endurance than skill and ability!

Two of our flagship events took place in July, President's Day on the 14th and our Charity Day on the 20th in aid of HASAG, the Hampshire asbestosis charity. Both events were fully subscribed with over 150 people attending the charity day which raised more than £2000 for HASAG. We have also been able to raise a further £250 which will be presented to the Hayling First Responders who do a fantastic job attending medical emergencies on the island before the ambulance can get there.

On Charity Day a match between bowls club members and HASAG members was enjoyed by all and was followed by an excellent barbeque, provided by Neil Hook, and a demonstration of Kung Fu and Tai Chi

by members of the Zheng Dao Lo Martial Arts Academy led by Master Andrew.

Audience participation followed the demonstration which was enjoyed by all concerned. As a personal trainer I hear lots of excuses for people not exercising. Here are some popular excuses and some helpful hints to overcome these excuses 1. I haven’t got time - Finding the time to exercise can be a challenge. Look at your diary for the week coming up and book some time in your diary. If you have to change your appointment then make a promise to reschedule rather than cancel 2. I’m too tired - Life in the fast lane can be really tiring. Regular exercise is well known to produce feel good endorphins and can help reduce tiredness. The trick is to start small and work up over the coming weeks 3. I hate the gym - Mention the words ‘getting fit’ and they conjure up all these skinny gym bunnies working out. The gym can be an intimidating place. Getting a good gym induction can really help, be clear with the member of staff what your goals get a program to match your goals. Go with a friend and have a chat while you workout, time will go quicker 4. I don’t enjoy exercise - There are lots of people who have had a bad exercise experience and have let it affect them long term. There are so many different types of exercises

classes and options out there now.

Here are a few a. Salsa or Zumba for those who like to dance b. Swimming or aqua fit for those water bunnies c. Circuits or body combat for those hard core class goers d. UNICEF RIGHTS RESPECTING SCHOOL ACCREDITATION

Cowplain Community Pre-school is an outstanding pre-school which has been around since 1975, and is in the grounds of Cowplain Community School. Being a preschool already passionate about respecting children and their basic rights, the preschool looked at how they could achieve recognition for the passion the staff and the committee share.

They looked at UNICEF’s Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) (www.unicef.org.uk/rrsa), and they decided that was what they wanted to achieve. The Rights Respecting Schools Award recognises achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) at the heart of a school’s planning, policies, practice and ethos.

After a lot of hard work, led by Yolanda Cawdeary, the pre-school spent months tweaking things and ensuring all the rights applicable to them were second nature in everything they do. Just before the summer holidays they had a nerve racking and nail biting assessment by an external verifier from UNICEF. Just as they broke up they received the confirmation they had passed their accreditation and earned the right to call themselves a ‘Rights Respecting School’, which became even more real on their return from the holidays receiving the certificate in the post.

‘One set of old fossils looking for an even older set of fossils’

This local University of the Third Age, with its educational and social basis, is thriving and now starting its 6th year with over 150 members. Our focal point is Merchistoun Hall, south of Horndean centre and just off the A3, where we hold our popular, wide ranging monthly talk on the first Friday of the month; 2013 talks have included: ‘Art Deco’, ‘Flora Thompson, beyond Candleford’, ‘2012 Olympic & Paralympic Experiences’ We have a raft of supporting Interest Groups covering a wide range of subjects; our Science Group has a range of activities, recently there has been a fossil hunting field-visit, described below: Fossil hunting at Bracklesham Bay Over the last few years, as one of our regular activities, the group has been encouraged to be Rock Detectives; examine the Glitter of Minerals, survey the sand dunes of Studland Bay and examine the influence of geology on the landscape of Lulworth Cove. Our first journey into the world of Palaeontology had to coincide with low tide because this is when the fossil beds are exposed and fossils are easiest to find. As a result the meet took place at 3.30pm on a perfect sunny

afternoon, starting in the car park at Bracklesham Bay. The basics of how fossils form; the geology of the Tertiary coastline and what type of fossils to expect, were discussed at the start. Impatient to get going the 22 members of the group set off, heads down, beachcombing the shore close to the tide line.

Prize finds Prize finds are sharks teeth, one specimen was found, but there is an abundance of Tertiary, 56-34 million years old, marine fossils. Initially, any fossil shell was collected but as the quality of the finds improved then the fossil hunters could become more discerning. By the end of the ‘hunt’ we had collected an amazing number and variety of fossils from corals to bivalves (Cardita) and gastropods (Turritella). Although 54 million years may seem a long time age, in geological terms this is relatively recent and so the specimens were very similar to the modern shells of today.

The excursion did have an educational purpose and its success should not have been a surprise as this is one of the best fossil collecting sites in Southern England.

The aim of the team is to organise at least one fund raising event every couple of months and if popular once a month.

They have planned two events for the remainder of 2013 and are busy planning fundraising events for the winter & spring of 2014.

On November 23rd they will be hosting a festive Quiz Night – with a complimentary mince pie on arrival. The
