Federation of Schools - Carp On! It is a great thing that our local schools are working together to provide greater opportunities for young people across the area, academically and socially. A sunny day in July was perfect for the Inaugural Federation Fishing Competition - the sun was high in the sky and the fish were biting!

We are now rotating our distribution so over a period of time, everyone will have received a copy at home. Please remember that if you don’t receive a copy, pick one up from one of the many distribution points around where you live.

MBK Leisure’s, Coloured Ponds, Rake. The competition was organised by myself and Mandy Tricker of The Prospect School, Leigh Park to give pupils a chance to represent their school in a sport that is not

given the recognition it deserves. “ Teams from Purbrook Park, Prospect School, Park Community and Horndean Technology College took part.

The prizes and trophies were sponsored and donated by Kings Tackle shop, South Downs College, Dynamite Recruitment and MBK Leisure.

All pupils caught fish and learned new skills. Bobby Fisher, year 8, from Horndean caught the most fish winning that award, Jake Hutchinson, year 8 from Prospect won the specimen trophy for catching a beautiful Golden Carp. Billy Steadman from Park Community won a rod and reel donated by MBK for his carping efforts but the day was won overall by Callum Gordon and Callum Flynn from Purbrook Park with an overall weight of 34 ½ lb containing 9 carp.

Old Habits Die Hard!

You’ve decided you want to get fit. You’re determined to succeed. BUT then life gets in the way. I’ll go to the gym tomorrow, I’m too tired, I fancy a meal out instead. Before you know it you’ve lapsed into old habits and your determination has gone by the wayside.

Following these simple steps can help to understand any lapses and nip them in the bud. Set a fitness goal (e.g. I want to exercise 3 times a week), look at this goal and prepare for potential lapses.

1. List high risk situations (work, tiredness etc.): a. Analyse and understand these situations.

2. Devise a plan: a. e.g.

If a lapse occurs ask the following: a. Why and how did I relapse? b. What was the trigger for the lapse? c. How long before I noticed the lapse?

4. Learn to recognize lapses straight away and use the questions above to learn how to deal swiftly with them.

5. Is my new routine sustainable? a. Make sure your fitness goals can be achieved on a regular basis; 6. Are you being realistic about your new routine? a. We often set ourselves up for failure; b. Make sure that the new routine is realistic.

7. Look at solutions for these lapses: a. The faster you get back on track, the more likely your new routine will become a longlasting change.

8. Think positively, this is a life-long change where small lapses will always happen.

9. Call on support: a. Talk to friends and family and enlist their support before and during your new routine.

10. Make positive changes to get back on track: a. Don’t beat yourself up about the lapses or get yourself into a negative cycle; b. Write the lapse off to a bad day and get straight back on track!

IT’S WORM AWARENESS TIME AT PURBROOK VETERINARY PRACTICE! We all want our pets to live long and healthy lives, one of the easiest ways to ensure this is with regular worming.

Experts recommend that you worm your cat or dog at LEAST four times a year.

The most common types of worm are Roundworm and Tapeworm. Roundworm can be present in puppies from two weeks of age and kittens from six weeks.

They cause bloating, lethargy, diarrhoea and weigh loss. Tapeworms are commonly spread by fleas, so it is also important to keep your pet protected from fleas.

Lungworm is a parasite that is becoming more of a worry for vets, dogs can pick it up through eating/licking infected snails and slugs, it can cause a 'soft' cough, bleeding and nervous systems signs. Often there are no symptoms and IT IS deadly.

It is especially important to keep up regular worming if you have children, up to forty children a year in the UK become blind due to contact with roundworms.

Marathon in Instalments Update Over 60 people registered to compete in the Age Concern Marathon in Instalments currently being staged in Jubilee Park, which finished on Saturday 20 July. These ranged in age from 83 to 11, and include several dogs who have accompanied their owners around the course.

28 competitors have now completed the 90 laps required and are busily collecting their sponsorship from those friends, family and acquaintances who have kindly agreed to support them and Age Concern's Borrow Centre in Cowplain.

Most of the rest will also complete the course before the deadline.

Recently 77 year old Dinky Legg,( who is now partially sighted and has some difficulty walking) completed the course, showing amazing determination and courage. Many people will recall Dinky as Scout Leader and subsequently Scout Commissioner for the district, and will not be surprised to hear of her latest achievement.

Dinky was accompanied during the marathon by Sylvia Harris (a mere 67) , but together they have been a fine example to other younger entrants who have marvelled at their efforts.

The event experienced largely good

Local History Society for Cowplain Many people have suggested that it would be desirable to have a local history group for Cowplain, to capture the memories of some its older residents , and to ensure that the existing history is not lost for future generations.

An open evening will therefore be held at the Borrow Centre on Wednesday 11 September at 7.30pm to test the extent of support for this concept , and help to formulate what and how any new local

weather and many of the people who entered have thoroughly enjoyed the exercise, and good company which has given them a reason to get out and take some exercise .Many have asked whether we shall hold the event again next year.

Certificates & prizes will be awarded by Cllr Yvonne Weeks at the Borrow Centre on Saturday 7 September, where all those who completed the course will be thanked and celebrated.

Indications are that this marathon will produce several thousand in sponsorship from all those generous people who signed up.

The newly established indoor short mat bowls club at the Borrow Centre , which meets between 10 - 12 am on Wednesday mornings is now well established, and extra mats have been acquired to accomodate additional demand. We still have space for a few more members, however, and if you are a beginner or established player who likes a quieter environment then please come along and see us, and we would be glad to welcome you . We do not play matches, we just bowl for fun and friendship.

Hattie Butson aged 8 completes sponsored swim

The table tennis club meets on Wednesday afternoons fron 1.30 - 3.30pm, and on Friday evenings from 7 -9 pm, and we have 3 tables on the go ensuring plenty of play.

A new painting and drawing class has recently been established at the Borrow Centre on saturday mornings from 1012am, led by students from Southdowns College, who have kindly agreed to help with style, choice of subject, techniques , and overall layouts.

The class is aimed at beginners and improvers who want to develop their

history group could function , what its aims and objectives might be, where and when it would meet.

Anyone who is interested is invited to come along and share their views with others of similar disposition, and to explore the options for development of the concept.

In March of this year three staff and the head boy and girl from Crookhorn College travelled out to their partner school in Ghana, Africa; funded jointly through the British Council and fundraising within the college.

During the visit staff had the privilege to teach the Ghanaian students in subject areas of science, geography and ICT, extending the links between the schools through this year’s project structured around agriculture. The school, although only having seven classrooms, has more than 450 students on roll in three year groups. Attendance varies daily but classes on average have 60 students to a teacher. Conditions are dramatically different to those in the UK but the passion for learning, the enthusiasm for knowledge and the drive to succeed is overwhelming.

Over the four years of partnership between the two establishments bonds have been developed which have enriched both the physical and emotional environments. Most recently Crookhorn College have provided for Aburasu Junior High a fully functioning computer suite with staff laptop, a projector

and printer. Football kit has been provided for the boys and girls teams – Portsmouth strip of course. The science department have received a demonstration torso for teaching and supporting materials to deliver in-depth lessons on the internal systems of the body, and the school as a whole has benefitted from the purchase of three white boards for half of the classrooms – the funds for which were raised by the Head boy and girl at Crookhorn in magic shows, bake sales and a non uniform day.

Jordan , Head boy, in his assembly to students at Crookhorn on his return stated “Ghana is a place where some many people have nothing, not even running water, but they all have the determination to be the very best they can be. We can all learn from that.” In September three staff from Aburasu Junior High will be making to return visit to Crookhorn, including the two key link staff that made the visit to Ghana so successful.

Post Legal Aid cuts

Where are we 3 months on?

The Legal Aid cuts had a deep impact on many residents of PO9 & PO11. Many people who were previously eligible for legal aid were suddenly unable to obtain legal advice for family law matters as of 1 April 2013.

At Swain & Co, we fought hard against the cuts as we are committed to helping those who need help most. We are still offering legal aid to those who remain eligible (if you have been a victim of domestic abuse).

Cricket – made in Hambledon!

It is incredible to think that cricket, the world’s second most popular sport and the most popular in 20 countries with a combined population of 1.6 billion…was made into the sport it is today in and around the small village of Hambledon, 15 miles north of Portsmouth.

The origins of cricket are widely disputed but most people agree that Hambledon is where it began. The cricket club in Hambledon was founded around 1750 and was renowned for boasting the most talented side in England, a wellknown victory being in June 1777 when Hambledon took on England and beat them by a whole innings - England getting 166 runs and 69 to Hambledon's 403.

Their matches drew thousands of spectators from around the country and the popularity of the game is still rising, the ICC cricket World Cup is the third largest single sporting event in the world, only being surpassed in television viewers by the Football World Cup and the Olympics.

The club was the governing body of the game and helped promote the sport and aided its growth.

The clubs ground was Broadhalfpenny down and this is where they had most of their success, however they moved to Windmill Down in 1782 and later into Ridge Meadow which is the current home of the club and where a pavilion was built in 1969, funded by cricket lovers worldwide. The club is no longer a powerful as it once was, due to the formation of the Marylebone Cricket Club in London in 1787. This triggered a move in power over the administration of the game, and now the home of cricket is seen as Lords which is MCC’s ground.

Hambledon village is commonly referred to as the ‘cradle of cricket’ as the sport was created long before the creation of the club but was turned into the sport it is by rule changes etc. that were made by the club. Although Broadhalfpenny down is no longer used by the club, it is now used by the Broadhalfpenny Brigands Cricket Club and there is a memorial stone situated on the ground near the Bat & Ball Inn which was once described by David Gower as ‘the centre of the cricketing universe’.

The Langstone Technology Park has become the latest member of the BEST Network, helping to promote key research across the UK. Alongside the Edinburgh Technopole, Kent Science Park, The Hexagon Tower in Manchester, Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire and The Wilton Centre in Middlesbrough, the Langstone Technology Park has rebranded to become part of the nationwide network of science and technology parks, assembled by LaSalle Investment.

The Technology Park was identified as a key hub for the BEST Network, due to its extensive history in leading technological advancement. Langstone is also a wellestablished hub for business in Hampshire, with around 4,000 employees from 40 businesses based there.

The BEST Network – The Business Environments for Science and Technology Network – was designed to create cross network clusters for the UK in some of the UK’s highest growth sectors and with support in mind to businesses that wish to

grow.

Few businesses work well in isolation; they need the right support to grow flexibly as well as the right investment from the landlord. Growing through inspiration was also a key factor for the merger, so that like-minded people can share ideas and inspiration with others.

The Langstone Technology Park held a networking lunch to mark the launch during early July; where around 40 members were in attendance including key members of the BEST Network team and the Rt Hon David Willetts MP. Mr Willetts, who is the current minister for universities and science, recalled the history of the Langstone site from its IBM roots and praised the success of the Park, saying: “The success of Xyratex and the Langstone Technology Park turned what could have been a disaster into a triumph”.

New signage is expected to mark the rebranding at the Technology Park site soon.

Northney Ice Cream celebrates success as orders increase four-fold The summer has well and truly arrived for Northney Ice Cream, as they celebrate an increase in sales that is four times that of last year, thanks to some recent sign ups from well-known local businesses and the recent warm weather.

Northney Ice Cream was set up in 2009 by Tim Pike as a diversification project. It is made from the milk of his herd of pedigree Ayrshire cows and turned into ice cream on site at Northney Farm on Hayling Island.

Tim has seen the business grow from strength to strength, and, thanks to some recent local orders from businesses such as The Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, Chef Sam’s based in Denvilles House in Havant and the Hayling Island Sailing Club, sales are on the up.

In the meantime the restaurant had started to fill. Our main course arrived after a little time I had chosen slow cooked lamb shank on a bed of freshly prepared potato mash and peas; my partner had strayed onto the specials menu and had selected cod loin and plump black pearl scallop in a creamy dill sauce set again onto a bed of mashed potato.

The desserts menu gave a lot of choice as well – a variety of ice-creams together with a cheese board (Stilton Cheddar and Wensleydale) were our choices.

An excellent wine list and a good range of beers are available. It was pleasing to see this 42 bedroomed hotel busy and it is so easy to visit this establishment as it boasts a large car park to the rear. Why not give this hotel a try and hopefully enjoy the visit as much as we did – treading in the footsteps of Queen Victoria, Churchill and Eisenhower!

The Girls Race for Life in Southsea

Yes, it is really true, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and just look at these fantastic girls from Spirit-of-the-South, an A Capella Chorus with members from all-over Hampshire, rehearsing at Park Community School, Middle Park Way, Havant.

Even though it was hot, Sylvia Howard and Jackie Stanley did the first 10km at a fast pace in 1 hour 48 minutes. They were then joined by Lucy van de Ven, Louise Kenneison, Molly Butler, Gillian Rose-Smith and Jan Dunleavy for 5km which they

finished in 67 minutes.

They still had some breath left to sing some old time songs like pack up your troubles, as they walked before making a dash at the last 40 yards arm in arm. They raised over £300! Well done girls.

The Bear Hotel in East Street Havant has played host to Queen Victoria, Churchill and Eisenhower and one balmy summer’s evening it hosted our visit to this traditional coaching inn.

In this issue I have included “core stability” exercises to assist with the maintenance of good posture, help support your back and provide the base for all arm and leg movements.

A lot of people have weak core muscles including those with desk based jobs and some people who lift heavy weights at gyms. Strong core muscles are extremely important for stability and help to reduce the risk of back injury. More often than not, though, they aren’t targeted when people are working out.

Bridge The bridge is good for strengthening the core stability and gluteal muscles (buttocks).

Lie on the floor with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor.

Squeeze your gluteals and then push your hips up until there is a straight line through knee and hip to upper body and shoulders remain on the floor.

Hold ten seconds, repeat ten times, three times a day.

Superman This exercise helps strengthen core stability muscles and improves balance.

Kneel on the floor and place your hands below your shoulders and knees below your hips.

Extend right leg back and the left arm forward.

Maintain a straight body line through extended leg, body and extended arm.

Repeat with opposite limbs.

Hold 10 seconds, repeat 10 times, 3 times a day.

Plank This is an advance core stability exercise, so only try this if you are used to exercising or once your core stability has improved after doing the two exercises above.

Hold a straight body position, supported on elbows and toes.

Tighten the lower abdominals and maintain a straight body line through feet, hips and head.

Hold for 30 seconds to 2 minutes repeat twice, 2 times a day

I advised her to start but cutting down on her milk drinks and suggested she opt for herbal tea, especially peppermint and fennel instead. Choosing high fibre foods such as wholemeal bread, pulses and whole grain cereals would alleviate the symptoms. Over a two week period Lesley altered her diet and the next time I saw her said ‘it was like someone flicked a switch inside me. I have more energy, my skin is glowing and I was happy to go to a friend’s BBQ’.

Food and Wine Wine of the Month

Dr Loosen 2012 Riesling I can honestly say that if it hadn’t been for German Riesling white wines and Dr Loosen Riesling white wine, in particular, I would never ever have developed all the love and passion I have for wine, today.

Because for me, personally, German Rieslings are just some of the most wonderful wines in the world! Yet, strangely, one of the most underrated and underappreciated? And that’s not just me saying that! But then, if a customer in the restaurant asks me: “What do you recommend?” And I reply: “We have a really lovely German Riesling, if you would like to try it?” More often than not, I get the same answer: “Oh I don’t think so, thank you.

Maybe a Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio, perhaps, if you have one…?”

Not that I can appear to be in any way biased, of course. But then, that’s not to say I am going to give up easily, especially if I get a hint that they’re willing to be a little adventurous, which is great! And, I have to say, so far, I’ve always been proved right.

And, as a result, have ended up with some very happy, if not pleasantly surprised, customers, at that! Even so, I cannot for the life of me understand why people seem so reluctant to go with German Rieslings?

Granted, some customers are quite anti, what they consider to be very sweet wines.

And then there are those who still remember Riesling as possibly being that cheap, old-fashioned not so nice German plonk they had in their youth…. Well, all I can say is; that things have moved on ‘big time’ since those days! Because Rieslings, today, I can tell you, exhibit a range of styles and dynamic flavours unmatched by any other wine, arguably anyway; ranging as they do from dry, through to light and medium-sweet, to wines that are truly stunningly luscious in their nectar-like sweetness yet outstandingly refreshing, tangy fruity flavours. And never mind, dare I add, that this luxuriously sweet wine is the result of picking what are called ‘late harvest grapes’ that have become infected with, of all things, a disgusting looking fungus called Noble Rot which shrivels-up the grapes. But in doing so, leaves behind the most heavenly, sweet and exquisite, concentrated juice, which is then used to make the wine…. So next time you go to throw out a bowl of half-eaten rotting grapes, think again perhaps!!

Which brings me nicely to this, my fourth wine of the month: Dr Loosen 2012 Riesling, as pictured; Asda price, at the time of printing: £5.78 per bottle. Because, Dr

Loosen is one of Germany’s finest producers of Riesling wines; and where Riesling white grapes have been growing on the steep, slate-soil vineyards of the Mosel river valley, as elsewhere in Germany, ever since they were first brought to the world’s attention back in the 15th Century…. For just tasting this extraordinary wine brings back so many memories. Its honey-silkiness, if you have ever tried honey over pancakes or honey with ice-cream; it’s so scrumptious and tasty. And coupled with the fruity flavours of green apple and grape; not to mention the luscious pear, peach and apple aromas which permeate this delectable wine, no wonder it’s also so totally refreshing! Fabulous! Gorgeous! ….And, as far as pairing it with food is concerned, the great advantage, as with all Rieslings, is that it will go with almost anything. But, in particular, I would mention perhaps: seafood dishes like lobster and scallops; salad with sundried tomatoes, something with a bit if a kick to it; and certainly anything spicy such as Chinese, Indian or Thai. Not forgetting, of course, as an accompaniment to desserts, such as: strawberries, tropical fruit, summer pudding and fruit pies…. But, whatever you decide, please just go-out and give this ‘bad boy’, this ‘little number’, a try? Because if you don’t, you won’t know what you’re missing!

Food Fiend Experience Recipe column - by Kathy Fitchett Preparation: Photography by the Rob Paul Studio, Havant

Roasted Vegetable and Goats cheese tart with caramelised onion, a delicious starter or main course.

My recipe this month is to be enjoyed for ‘al fresco’ dining; however, I’ll be honest, I have actually cooked it many more times as a mid-week supper with a salad and roasted new potatoes. It is so easy to make and a real tasty number, you cannot fail to impress anyone you make it for.

Ingredients: 1 pack ready rolled puff pastry; 4 large peppers mixture of colours preferable; 2 onions; 4 tbsp. sugar; Dash of white wine vinegar; 150 gms goats’ cheese; Basil leaves.

Instructions: 1. Open out ready rolled puff pastry and cut into desired portion size and then bake in oven at 200 degrees for approx.

10 minutes until partially cooked through and then remove from oven.

2. Cut each pepper into 8 strips by firstly halving the pepper and then having the quarter and then halving the quarter.

Place on a baking sheet and sprinkle with a little olive oil and then season with pepper and salt and bake in the oven for 30 to 40 minutes until well cooked.

3. Roughly dice the onions and then cook in a non-stick pan with some olive oil adding the sugar first and then the vinegar and cook over low heat for 10 to 15 minutes until onions start to turn brown.

4. Slice goats cheese.

5. Assemble tart, firstly spread a thin layer of caramelised onion on the partially cooked pastry, follow this with the cooked peppers and then the sliced goats cheese. Bake in the oven on 200 degrees for 15 minutes until well cooked.

6. Enjoy cooked tart with a salad and roasted new potatoes for a more substantial meal and the white wine recommended by Daniel Clark, Dr Loosen 2012 Riesling.

NEW SOCIETY TAKES OFF! By: Mrs Angela Waller Were you in the Royal Air Force? If so, you will be interested to hear about a recently formed Society that meets every month in Chichester, with some additional meetings.

Arun & Chichester (Air) Enthusiasts Society, (also known as Air ACES), holds its regular meetings, on Monday evenings, at the Chichester Park Hotel (behind Sainsbury's, off of the Chichester by-pass), Westhampnett, Chichester. PO19 7QL. The group was formed less than a year ago, and interest has grown quickly - 51 persons attended the inaugural meeting and over 140 have attended recent talk evenings. The Society's membership (at present there are 126 members) is growing fast, with members coming from a wide area across West Sussex, North East to Surrey, West to Southampton & East to Brighton.

Speakers are booked for each meeting and talks cover a wide range of aviationrelated topics, from vintage aircraft to Concorde. Recently, John Farley talked on "The Harrier Story", Richard (Dick) Kharegat talked about "A Life in Bombers, including the Vulcan", and as part of the

Festival of Chichester, Terence Henderson, former Senior Captain on Concorde, was the speaker at the Air ACES meeting in June.

Another "outing" for members is planned with a visit to 'a special air day' at Brooklands, in September.

The Society actively supports local community junior groups - at present, the Bognor Scout Cubs & Scouts. and the Bognor & Chichester Air Training Corps (ATC), as well as the Sussex Air Ambulance.

Membership is £10 per year (and at present new members signing for 2014 membership, can get the rest of 2013 included - a big bonus - 17 months for the price of 12 months!).Visitors are very welcome and pay £5 entrance fee for each meeting, and may attend as often as they wish as "visitors", without becoming a member. So why not taxi up to a meeting, ready to take off and a new social life!

Denmead Charity Cycle Ride This years event in the village of Denmead to raise funds for the ‘Hannah’s Holiday Home Appeal’ was for the first time held on a Saturday rather than a Sunday to facilitate an evenings entertainment The charity provides funded breaks for families with children with life threatening illnesses, undergoing or recovering from treatment, or coping with bereavement.

A record 225 sponsored cyclists of all ages rode out from the Harvest Home pub in Denmead. They rode towards Clanfield, the Bat & Ball Public House, through Hambledon village towards Hoe Cross and Newtown, and back to Denmead via the Chairmakers Arms. Most did the 20 mile ride but the more energetic completed a 35 mile ride with loops through the spectacular scenery and countryside around Winchester Hill, Brockbridge, and Soberton.

As well as raising money from the sponsored rides, back at Harvest Home the fund raising included a BBQ in the field opposite the pub, a raffle and tombola, an auction and two bands - Fay Wray and Sporting life. The attractions continued

Partners with Hampshire Chamber Members Food Fiend Experience (FEE) specialises in unique group cookery experiences and focuses on international cuisine. This fledgling company has gained a reputation for providing a very different experience for group - one that is fun, tasty and memorable. In the early part of 2013 it diversified its business and is now providing practical affordable workshops through the training arm which it calls YEAST (Your Exacting Affordable Solution for practical business Training). Kathy Fitchett, owner of FFE, has done this because she has a facility which is ideal for hosting small workshops.

Kathy has partnered with Vertical Leap and Red Rocket who are delivering the online marketing workshops. One has already taken place and more are lined up for the autumn.

Waterlooville Probus Club In late June, Probus members and their guests went on a trip on the Spirit of Portsmouth from Gosport to the Beaulieu River and Bucklers Hard. Our return was along the north shore of the Isle of Wight, and after inspecting one of the Solent Forts at close quarters, we then toured the dockyard to see all the naval ships currently based in Portsmouth. A lively and informed commentary made for a very enjoyable trip.

Recovery From Divorce and Separation Relationship breakdown hurts. Many people find it hard to move on; they need time to rebuild self confidence and may be helped by meeting people in the same boat.

ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTYFOR VALOUR WEEKEND PAYS TRIBUTE TO WW1 HEROES The centenary of World War One coming up next year has prompted the Holiday Inn Winchester to repeat the highly successful For Valour Weekend for the second year.

Located on Morn Hill, one of the most historic and important WW1 sites in Hampshire, the hotel has forged strong links with the Winchester military museums.

Morn Hill was considered the last stop before going into battle and in December 1914 50,000 troops lived under canvas there preparing to travel to France and Belgium via Southampton. Four years later over 2 million soldiers, including 800,000 Americans had passed through the camp.

“We know that there is huge interest in the military, particularly with the WW1 anniversary coming up and we wanted to pay tribute to all the brave soldiers that left this site here at Morn Hill,” commented Holiday Inn Winchester General Manager Siobhan Thomasson.

The weekend starts with a special evening talk at the hotel on Friday 11th October on ‘The Origins and History of the Victoria Cross’ by Lieutenant General Sir Christopher Wallace, author of ‘Focus and Courage: the 59 Victoria Crosses of the Royal Green Jackets.’ This is followed by dinner in the hotel’s Morn Hill Brasserie Restaurant.

Congreve was one of the many brave soldiers who received a Victoria Cross, who was killed in December 1915, aged just 25 after many acts of great courage and bravery detailed in a transcript from the London Gazette relating to the awarding of the Victoria Cross ‘for most conspicuous bravery during a period of fourteen days preceding his death in action. This officer constantly performed acts of gallantry and showed the greatest devotion to duty, and by his personal example inspired all around him with confidence at critical periods of the operation. During preliminary preparations for the attack he carried out personal reconnaissance of the enemy lines, taking out parties of officers and noncommissioned officers for over 1000 yards in front of our line, to acquaint them with the ground. All these preparations were under fire. Two days later when Brigade Headquarters was heavily shelled and many casualties resulted, he went out to assist the medical officer to remove the wounded to places of safety, although he was himself suffering severely from gas and other shell effects. He again on a subsequent occasion showed supreme courage in tending wounded under heavy shell fire. He finally returned to the front line to ascertain the situation after an unsuccessful attack and was shot and killed instantly.’

Ladies barbershop harmony chorus The Pitchpipers put on their glad rags and entertained the audience at a Strawberry Tea in aid of the Rowans Hospice on Saturday 20th July on Hayling Island. The show included a varied mixture of tunes, from traditional barbershop melodies such as “Give me a Barbershop Song”, right through to modern songs including “It’s Raining Men” by The Weather Girls; very ironic on such a sunny day. On top of other charity events, The Pitchpipers will be performing at Emsworth Show on Bank Holiday Monday 26th August, where they will also be selling delicious cakes, jams and chutneys. Pop along to their stand for a special treat – especially if it’s your birthday!

The Spring is proud to welcome back TV gardener Christine Walkden to talk about ‘The Life and Times of a Gardener’.

Christine is well known to viewers of BBC Gardeners’ World and Christine’s Garden, and is The One Show’s resident gardening expert. This year she was responsible for mentoring the winning amateur designer of The One Show Garden at RHS Hampton Court Flower Show 2013.

Christine is known for her nononsense approach and sensible, practical advice; always willing to get her own hands dirty, she provides encouragement to new and experienced gardeners about how to make the best of the opportunities for making a garden in the smallest space, with plenty of trusty and original tips.

She has led garden tours and field trips all over the world; a keen photographer, she illustrates her lectures from her vast library of images of wild and cultivated gardens around the world.

DARING DORIS TO ABSEIL AGAIN At the age of 99, anyone could be forgiven for putting their feet up and taking it easy. Not ‘Daring’ Doris Long MBE; having already abseiled on her 99th birthday in May, incredible Doris is ready to do it all again but this time she will be abseiling down Portsmouth’s landmark building, the Spinnaker Tower, in aid of The Rowans Hospice.

This will be Doris’s highest ever abseil at 100m (328ft) and it has been a longheld ambition of hers to take on the Tower. Now, thanks to the team at Gunwharf Quays, Doris has the chance to realise her goal. Gunwharf Quays Management Limited has chosen The Rowans Hospice as their local Charity of the Year partner and as part of their fundraising for the year decided to put a team together to abseil down the Spinnaker Tower on Saturday 7th September. Doris has become something of a local celebrity through her extreme fundraising activities and has been abseiling to raise money for her favourite charity, The Rowans Hospice, for 10 years.

SHOW HOME SUCCESS at GRAINGER’S BEREWOOD On the weekend of the 22nd June, Bloor Homes opened the doors for the first time to two show homes at Grainger’s Berewood development. The day was a huge success with around 400 people turning up to have a look round a typical 4bed and 3-bed Berewood home.

Bloor Homes, the company building the houses, appointed two local companies for interior fittings. Art Space Interiors, an interior design company, beautifully furnished the show homes to create a contemporary yet warm feel.

Berewood’s New Primary School to join Chichester Academy Trust The new primary school at Berewood, Waterlooville will open its doors in September 2014 as part of the Chichester Academy Trust, the Multi-Academy Trust established by the University of Chichester.

Construction of the academy buildings is underway and will provide 420 places for pupils aged 4 to 11 from the surrounding area and the new community of Berewood, where 2550 family homes are planned over the next 10-15 years.

With the end of the school year fast approaching, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance is launching their ‘Re-use Ya Shoes!’ campaign in schools across the County.

Instead of binning old school shoes, football boots, trainers and wellies the charity is asking that people donate them and help to raise those vital funds to keep the Air Ambulance flying and saving lives. It doesn’t matter how old or what condition they are in, any shoe will do and they can all be recycled.

Much like the ‘Bag A Bra’ campaign, the shoes are sold on through reputable traders in other countries, or if they are in really bad condition they can be used for parts to repair other footwear, so nothing is wasted.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance want local schools to get involved and take part in the ‘Re-use Ya Shoes’ appeal, asking children to fill as many

bags as they can and building a tower of shoes to see which school can get the highest tower for a prize.

John Perry, Chief Executive of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance said ‘We are trying to get as many schools involved as possible this year and to collect a record number of shoes! The new owners of Davies Pharmacy Keith Seston and his wife Anu, have been busy investigating all the nooks Keith Seston and crannies of the old building in preparation for some essential restoration work.

Over the 150 years the site has operated as a pharmacy various items have been stored away and they offer a fascinating window to how medicines have changed since the Victorian times.

“We have discovered mixtures that promise to cure whooping cough, cocaine lozenges for sore throats and any problems with rodents were dealt with cyanide!” explains Keith.

“Many medicines used only 60 years ago would be considered harmful, illegal or ineffective today, but some of the containers are absolutely beautiful, small pieces of art in their own right. Our highlight was a block of Turkish opium

over 100 years old – needless to say the police quickly confiscated it.”

Invoices dating back to 1840's highlight the importance of the railway as many products started to arrive from London. Better transport links enabled

TOY SHOP MOVES

Leigh Park's local toy shop has celebrated their first birthday by moving in to a brand new shop.

Carousel Toys & Gifts have moved onto Park Parade following a successful first years' trading in Greywell Road. The new shop is around twice the size, which will mean more choice and variety for the public.

The shop, which specialises in collectables such as Moshi Monsters, Skylanders, and Pokemon cards has gone from strength to strength, and is looking forward to the run up to Christmas. With under 5 months to go, a Christmas Club will shortly be set up allowing customers to save money and reserve presents.

The new shop is open from 9:00-4:30 Monday to Saturday (2:30 on Wednesday).

The grand unveiling of the new salon at Havant Academy was marked by an end of year exhibition, showcasing the school’s excellent design work and business ideas.

The exhibition consisted of a fashion show, which had costumes designed and made by the students themselves, refreshments made on sight by the catering students as well as workshops, arts and crafts and gaming stalls.

The show was put on to support the World Challenge Charity and the Coco Foundation, organisations that are aptly supported at the Havant Academy who’s staff and students frequently hold fundraisers to support the work of each charity – the latest of which is the Facebook Challenge, so make sure you ‘Like’ Havant Academy on Facebook!

The fashion show worked with the students at the salon who helped out with models’ hair to fit in with the image achieved by the fashion students.

Categories included 1960’s, Summer at the Beach, Punk Rock and Disney.

Students were required to come up with a costume design, hair and make-up to match the complete look. Preparation took around two months and students got inspiration from image boards, favourite personalities and the internet.

The students were led by Salon Manager Jo Barker, who was very proud of the student’s dedication to the project.

The new salon at Havant Academy is open to the public and taking bookings now.

South Downs College Launch Boxing Academy The sport of boxing, has been added to the prestigious Academy at South Downs College in College Road, Purbrook, from September.

The Academy gives talented students the support they need to enter the professional levels of their chosen sport.

Postcode Publications recently reported on the College’s Football Academy that operates in partnership with Havant Hawks of the BSS Conference (South) League Yvonne Elliott; Head of Sport and Public Services at the College, referring to the Boxing course said, “I am really excited about the introduction of this new element to our academy provision. I believe it will allow students from all different backgrounds to study and achieve at College and that this will be linked with a fun and challenging sport.”

The Boxing Students will study for a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma qualification, covering sports nutrition, the physiology of fitness and aspects sport psychology. Students will also do boxing training for at least six hours per week.

The Awards teach the basics of fitness, discipline and boxing techniques and using

boxing for recreation, keeping fit and making friends.

A Boxing Tutor Course will equip coaches with the skills to make noncontact sessions fun and engaging, whilst providing others such as PE teachers and Youth Workers with an introduction to boxing as a fun non-contact sport.

The College Boxing Academy will operate in partnership with the Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy, which is already in partnership with Charter Academy that has a reputation for engaging young people in the City.

Quniton “Q” Shillingford, ABA Advanced Coach at the College Academy and Head Coach of Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy, added “Students will complete a high level academic qualification alongside boxing qualifications. Students who have never boxed before and those already working towards their boxing awards will also have the chance to complete a coaching qualification.”

Havant Hockey Club August is a busy month for Havant Hockey Club. The Club runs six women’s teams and 9 men’s teams and preparations for the 2013/14 season are getting underway. Jenny Bulled Vice-Chairman explained “We are providing evening sessions on Tuesdays for players keen to return to the game and pre- season training for our teams starts up in August”.

The Club has a strong membership base that includes 250 youngsters from 4 to 18 years of age. All the activity at the Club is supported by a substantial coaching and training team.

The men’s senior team plays in the EHL Conference West Division and the ladies team in South Division 1.

The full season starts in September with friendlies in the first 2 to 3 weeks of the month in preparation for the leagues starting towards the end of the month.

The Club has boys and girls teams from under 12s to under 18s and minis for the under 10s There are three teams for Veterans and super-veterans Although the traditional home of the Hockey Club is Havant Park, its senior teams now play their matches on the excellent all weather pitch at Havant College in New Road Havant. Local Swimmer Oliver Jermy Selected for ISF World Schools Games in Brazil Hayling Islands Oliver Jermy, who swims for Havant & Waterlooville Swimming Club, has been selected for the England Schools Swimming Team in the ISF World Schools Games (World Oliver Jermy Gymnasiade), in Brasilia, Brazil from 27th November - 4th December 2013. Ollie (aged 16) has been selected for the 200m Backstroke event. This is a great honour for Ollie, his Coach Graham Pople, and the Swimming Club. Over forty countries will compete in the World Schools Games, held every four years.

The Club’s recent Midsummer Open Meet (part of the Hampshire ASA Development Meet fixtures for young swimmers from Clubs throughout the County) was well attended. Over the weekend The Club’s young swimmers performed well. Events were held in all four of the swimming strokes (freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly) for boys and girls of age groups 9 – 10 years through to 15 years and over. In the Girls 9 – 10 age group the Club had awards for a fourth place out 44 contestants and for third and 8th placings in same age group for boys. Individual swimmers won an array of gold, silver and bronze awards in their events.

The Club is arranging a team of swimmers to attend the 2013 National Championships in Coventry. Special team Tshirts are sponsored by the Meridian Shopping Centre, and Postcode Publications.

The Aegon Summer County Cup Week at The Avenue Lawn Tennis Club in Denvilles from 22 – 26 July was successfully completed in conditions of record high temperatures and virtually no delays. The men's doubles were played at a standard not seen at the club for decades, if ever.

Hampshire & IOW’s top player was Josh Goodall, born in Basingstoke, and who reached the second round of Wimbledon in 2006 and 2010.

The courts played perfectly for the whole week, 12 months of preparation being topped off by the Club groundsmen with cutting and marking early every morning. The experience and dedication of the office staff ensured the smooth running of the week.

The week provided two Chichester College students with work experience in Sports Massage Therapy.

During the week visiting LTA officials appreciated everything the club had done for the tournament and the County Captains expressed their appreciation of 'an outstandingly friendly club'.

The week resulted in Hampshire & IOW winning all their matches and retaining top spot in Group 2. Runnersup were Lancashire.

Hawks New Season Report Hawks Manager Lee Bradbury has been busy consolidating plans for the team for the new season. The big news is that last terms top scorer Ollie Palmer has signed for Football League Club, Mansfield Town.

Ollie’s departure was on good terms with the Club. The timing was right for Ollie and ensured that Hawks were able to secure a substantial transfer fee. Lee Bradbury is working hard on the challenge of finding a solution to the replacement of Palmer. On other fronts Dan Strugnell (centre-back) has re-signed after turning down a contract offer from AFC Bournemouth. Dan who played on loan for Hawks last season explained “The contract offer from AFC Bournemouth was short term and I did a lot of thinking about my future at the end of last season. I witnessed others playing for the Hawks last season who are now playing at a much higher level after performing well at this level”.

Noakes has been awarded a contract by the Club and has recovered from a slight knee injury to be fully fit for the new season.

The Hawks start their campaign at big spending Ebbsfleet United on 17 August.

The 2012 London Olympics Legacy Postcode Publications is behind the 2012 London Olympics Legacy. With the first anniversary of the London event having just passed and celebrated extensively, we want to hear from local clubs and organisations willing to offer their facilities to youngsters to try.

Children aged between about 4 - 11 years need to engage in various sports, games and physical activities for enjoyment and for the social aspects of their participation. This kind of connection is an important part of the early years of their development. It is therefore important for

parents to be able call on local clubs and organisations to give their children the chance to ‘have a go’.

Children participating in these activities will develop the fundamental characteristics and physical attributes needed for sports in their middle years (aged 11 to 15). It is in these middle years of development that youngsters begin to invest more time and effort into one or a few preferred sports.

Hayling Island - National Watersports Festival 30 August – 1 September This year’s National Watersports Festival, in association with Havant Borough Council, takes place on Hayling Island Sea Front (near Hayling Golf Club) over 3 days from Friday 30th August to Sunday 1st September 2013.

This year’s Festival promises to be the biggest ever and to include Kite Surfing and Kayaking as well as Stand Up Paddle-boarding and Windsurfing.

NWF started 8 years ago as the National Windsurfing Festival.

There will also be an extensive trade-show, with the latest equipment available to view and buy and professionals on hand to offer advice (last year Windsurfing’s Team GB Olympic Silver Medalist, Nick Dempsey was present).

NWF also raises money for W4CR (Watersports for Cancer Research) through a charity auction of items donated by the industry and exhibitors.

“How to make” with

As a local fitness instructor and mum myself I often get asked by parents facing the school holidays how they can keep their fitness levels up and their weight down when they’re unable to attend the

regular High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) or running sessions I run as the children are home.

My advice is to keep calm and adapt.

Look out for my early morning HIIT sessions; some start as early as 6am. These are a great workout; cardio for fat burning and conditioning for strength and muscle definition. The exercises are suitable for all levels of fitness and easily adapted to do at home between sessions.

Why not join your local Parkrun too? (www.parkrun.org.uk) They’re FREE timed 5K runs every Saturday morning and the whole family can get involved, including your dog!

They’re fun, friendly and supportive, log on to find ones local to you.

Changing your exercise routine can give your fitness a real boost.

This edition Joy shares an idea to tidy away our carrier bags with The One Armed Bag Tidy…designed by you!

To make your bag tidy you will need: An old shirt (larger sized preferably to have a bigger sleeve) 1/2 metre ribbon Buttons…and a sewing machine.

Step 1 – Preparation Iron sleeve flat and cut at top edge. Fold over top edge by 1cm and machine stitch a straight seam.

STEP 1

Step 2 – The casing for the hanging loop Fold again making a 2cm fold and machine a straight stitch close to the edge. This will form the casing for the ribbon. DON'T FORGET TO LEAVE A GAP OF 2CM so the ribbon can be threaded in.

Step 3 – Completing the hanging loop Thread the ribbon through the casing using a bodkin or safety pin. Snip ends of ribbon diagonally to prevent them fraying. I added a button to tie the ends together to form the hanging loop.

STEP 2

Step 4 – Cuff End The end of my sleeve had a dress cuff with 2 buttonholes for cufflinks so I found 2 large buttons and stitched them on together, at the same time, through the buttonholes. I thought this was a fun way to narrow the gap at the other end where you pull out the bags.

STEP 3

Your bag tidy is finished. You could add other decorations as you please.

St Thomas More’s School continues to go from strength to strength Pupils, parents and staff at St Thomas More’s Primary School in Bedhampton look back on the last academic year with great pride. Cystic FibrosIS our Challenge Havant and Waterlooville are part of the Portsmouth Branch of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, a national charity fighting for over 9000 children and adults in the UK, including local families. CF Week was 24-30 June, but you may not have noticed! Why? CF is rare, occurring in about one in every 2500 births.

This explains why our Branch is small in number, made up of parents, aged from 30+ to 80+, aunts, grandparents and true friends, including an ex GOS nurse who never forgot her young CF patients, and a wonderful Canadian lady whose support started over 40 years ago. We are spread out over a huge area but meet once a month to swap news.

We try to do something special together once a year, whilst quietly beavering away the rest of the time.

The apprentices of Defence Munitions raised £748, through a bike ride, and presented the cheque to young Ethan Marvin of Lee-on- the- Solent (pictured).

Kate Jo & Sophie (Now you see us, now you don’t) are running 250 km, 5

kilometres a day for 50 consecutive days, and so far have raised over £500 through Virgin Giving. In Hayling, a sale of prints and cards in the recent Maydays arts trail, and donations instead of birthday cards raised £400.

Fundraising apart, the message of CF Week was that 1 out of 3 CF patients whose health has deteriorated so much will need a lung transplant. The Trust’s new website www.cysticfibrosis.org.uk is full of information on organ donating, gene therapy and many different aspects of its work.

You’ve probably heard of the theory of 6 Degrees of Separation! You’ll know, or will know someone whose life has been touched by CF, but won’t realise, because CF is a hidden condition.

Nowadays patients may look very well, yet they all have to have treatment every day of their lives. CF is carried by 1 in 25 of us, so in the Portsmouth Urban Area, with a population of 520,000, there will probably be over 20,000 carriers. The Trust is a good cause, and believes that with better understanding, cystic fibrosis can be beaten.

DENMEAD BOWLING CLUB WE KNOW HOW TO HAVE FUN What a great ‘windy’ afternoon we had at Denmead Bowling Club’s “Come as you were when The Ship Went Down” fancy dress Fun Afternoon. The laughter started with the arrival of a 6’ 2” Fairy wearing a pink wig, quickly followed by Minnie Mouse, Superman, the Phantom of the Opera and Coco the Clown (they had been to the ships fancy dress ball), Purrrrfect Puss, the ships cat, a pink-tighted Party Girl, folks half dressed, folks in pyjamas, a waiter, two boiler suited ships workers and a hard hatted ships apprentice holding a big plug.

The laughter and enjoyment continued with a different challenge to master on each of the six rinks; one of the challenges was to bowl wearing a blind fold, surprising how many members were told by their

opposition that they should consider wearing a blind fold at all times when bowling!

The afternoon was rounded off with the Prize Giving ceremony and an American Supper. A great time was had by all and everybody left exhausted but still laughing.

‘Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow’, ‘if you feel like working sit down until the feeling wears off’, and ‘ you can’t grow Runner Beans in SW France ‘ are three sayings which greeted me on my arrival in France 23 years ago.

The first two were immediately adopted and have stood me in good stead during my retirement here – much to my wife’s disappointment – and the third I accepted as a challenge. It gave me a certain feeling of ‘ je ne sais quoi ‘ in the Summer of ’91 to present my challenger with a basket of Runner Beans grown from English seed – and I haven’t looked back since !

How did all this come about ? Think camp site South Britanny, a glorious summer in the early 70s, our family (Ma, Pa, 3 teenage children and 1 friend) and Robbie’s cousin’s family (6 in all) enjoying a delightful open-air holiday, and the birth of a long love affair with all things Gallic – it just seemed a lovely way of life. The decision was made – one day we’ll live in France.

Fourteen years and many exploratory trips later, we bought our first French home – a typical Lot et Garonne farmhouse in need of much care and attention. We turned a team of local artisans loose on it, and eight months later had a house suitable for year-round occupation. Two years later we made another decision – to sell up in England and move out here permanently.

During the next 10/11 years I found it very difficult at times to stick to the first two sayings, because of the continual need to maintain the house and land (about ¾ of an acre), and of growing vegetables. My father was a keen gardener, and I think I

have his green fingers – but the climate here gives good crops – we’ve had Runner Beans every year. A tip for hot climates – white flower Runners do much better than the red sort.

After about 10 years of country idyll (or, in my case, ‘ idle ‘ ) we realised that, 10 years ahead, life in the boondocks could be a little more complicated as one reached ‘ un certain âge ‘. Answer - sell up and move into Duras, our local market village. We sold within 6 months, bought a plot of land in the centre of the village and had a pavillon (bungalow) built to our design – where we’ve lived for the last 9 years. Everything is within walking distance – nearest bar/restaurant 5 minutes and forty-seven seconds away, going !

Please don’t believe it’s all been plain sailing – we’ve had our trials, tribulations and troubles, but nothing that wasn’t eventually solved with the aid of ‘ un bon vin rouge ‘. We immersed ourselves in local life and culture as soon as we arrived, performing with a French theatre group for over 15 years and latterly singing in a French choir.

Although we’re not bi-lingual, we’re perfectly happy in French-only company.

Our Englishness (Welshness in Robbie’s case) remains important to us – we have many English friends and we belong to various English-oriented groups, such as the Royal Naval Association and Royal British Legion. Robbie has piano lessons with an English teacher and goes to a French Yoga class Would we do it again ? Without doubt – it has been a life-enriching, horizonwidening and culturally-captivating experience, and we don’t know where the time goes…and we can still read PO7&PO8 online!

MINNOWS CELEBRATE SING & SIGN SHOW A cast of over 30 young performers form the Minnows Preschool at Merchistoun Hall celebrated classic children nursery rhymes with actions and music @ their end of year production Minnows Sing & Sign show. The preschool staff and children design & create the set for the performance, practise both up in their preschool room and on the stage in readiness for the production itself and it was a triumph.

Minnows staff ’We were all extremely proud of the children ...they were fantastic!’..We have been putting on productions here at Merchistoun Hall for the last 4 years ...and they just get better every year – boosting the children’s confidence.

Proud parents in the audience: ‘The end of year show was once again fantastic ... All the children sang beautifully and looked brilliant in their costumes’ ... a brilliant end of term play’ Their next production will be a festive special in December The production was followed by the school’s annual end of year party in the main hall complete with music, BBQ, refreshments, indoor bouncy castle are all provided to say a fond farewell to those leaving for big school and for those returning for the new academic year in September – all having a lasting memories of the fantastic year they have all enjoyed learning in at Minnows Preschool Minnows pre –school are a service provided by Horndean Community Association are based at Merchistoun Hall – the home of the association.

Next up was Taller Than Jane, who got the crowd cheering with their music and their banter. Lead singer, Georgie Morris, filled the whole of Horndean with her powerful voice and the 6-piece band made their set lively and great fun. CLASSROOM FOR THE BUILDING SITE

Pupils from Horndean Junior School swapped the classroom for the building site when they visited Linden Homes’ new collection of homes at ‘The Old Brewery’ in the village.

Youngsters donned hard hats and high vis vests for a tour of the site off London Road. They were given a safety talk and got the chance to try their hand at laying bricks and building their own test wall. The 20 budding builders from Year 4 were also shown the new homes under construction.

During the summer holidays is an important time to stress to children that building sites are not playgrounds. Project and site managers, Ray Lenton and Trevor Woolford explained the dangers and pupils went home with leaflets. They even got to keep their high vis safety vests to wear

walking into school or cycling.

Redevelopment of the former Gale and Co brewery has preserved the Victorian-built red brick tower that has been a landmark of the village for 150 years.
