MARATHON BY INSTALMENTS New Marathon by Instalments in Jubilee Park, Waterlooville, starts Saturday 25 May at 10am.

Ever wanted to say ‘I ran a marathon’ but never been fit or athletic enough to join in? Well now you can courtesy of a new marathon format which can be progressively completed over a 10 week period, at your own pace and frequency.

You don’t have to be an existing athlete, just be able to walk, jog, or run at your own speed round the set course each week clocking up laps until you reach the magic number of 90, which is the equivalent to the full 26.2 miles of a marathon. Dog walkers are welcome to join in, as are people using mobility buggies.

The event is not a race, just a way of getting people who want to take the summer air and exercise in a local park for a good cause and in a safe and sociable environment.

Sessions are on Saturday mornings 1012noon, and Wednesdays from 7-9pm, starting on 25 May and concluding on 20 July. Just come to any of the sessions that suit you after registering your entry.

There are prizes for many categories, including first home, youngest and oldest

person to complete the course, etc, and every competitor will receive a certificate to mark their achievement.

All competitors are required to obtain at least £40 sponsorship for Age Concern, Cowplain, to enable them to continue their excellent work helping less fortunate members of the local community.

Bring the family, all ages welcome.

Great South Runners Appeal

Have you ever thought of having a go at singing?

The old adage of “if you can talk, you can sing” is true, as the members on our 2013 Harmony Singing Course have achieved!

A vibrant gathering of women learned It’s Raining Men in 4 part harmony, coached weekly by our able Music Team & Musical Director in small groups until we were able to sing together as an ensemble.

All these women were aided by a teaching CD as the ability to read music is not essential.

A highlight in week 5 was an evening with an internationally respected judge and performance coach from Canada – Theresa Weatherbee, known professionally as The Finisher.

Appeal for Great South Runners to support centre in Waterlooville for disabled children Places are still available for this year’s Great South Run, which takes place on Sunday 27 October in Southsea. Smile Support & Care (featured on the front page of the last edition of PO7&PO8) is appealing to readers to take up the challenge and raise sponsorship towards its appeal to build a short-break centre for disabled children in Waterlooville.

Community fund-raiser, Jess Zubaidi, says: “The Great South Run takes place just 12 miles from the site where we plan to build our short-break centre for disabled children and young adults. By taking part in the run in aid of Smile, you will be helping to make the centre a reality for local families.”

There is no set sponsorship target for Smile runners who are encouraged to raise as much as they are able to. Simply secure your place through the greatrun website (greatrun.org) then get in touch with Smile for sponsorship support.

Marilou Cook, who is running for Smile, says: “Smile’s plans for their short-break centre will benefit so many children and families who find it impossible to have a break away. I wanted to do my bit to help and although I’m finding the training a challenge, I know it will be worth it when I cross the finish line and hand over the money I have raised!”

The Great South Run is the UK’s most popular 10 mile race and takes in historic sights and spectacular scenery. It is a fast and flat course and a fantastic introduction

The Budget: Buying a New Home?

Seven tips for a trouble-free move

George Osborne firmly shut the lid on his red box for the fourth time on the 20th March and ended speculation of what the coalition spring budget would deliver.

The answer for most of us is probably very little, but then with the Treasury’s piggy bank almost empty it was obvious that this was not going to be a ‘give away’ budget. For the majority of us, the increased tax-free personal allowance to £10,000 from next April is probably as good as it gets, along with the pledge that the planned September increase in fuel duty has well and truly been scrapped.That is,of course,unless you are looking to climb the property ladder either as a first time buyer or a second stepper. The new Help to Buyscheme will invest £3.5 billion, providing loans of up to 20% of the value of new build homes: This must be music to the ears of both potential purchasers and developers of the new properties in Wellington Park and all the other new housing projects currently under construction in our area.

There was good news too for families struggling with the cost of childcare. The new Childcare Scheme, which will be introduced in the autumn of 2015, will support families where both parents are in work but not receiving help through the Childcare element of Working Tax Credits. For childcare costs of up to £6,000 per child per year, support of 20% will be available worth up to £1,200. This will only be offered to families with children under five when it is first rolled out, but the intention is to extend the age group to all primary aged children in the future.

It wouldn’t be a budget unless tobacco and alcohol duty was tweaked and this year was no exception. The smokers amongst us will have already noticed that all tobacco products went up in price

from 6pm on the night of the budget.

Duty rates on tobacco have been increased by 2% above the rate of inflation as they also have for spirits, wine and cider. This has added 2p to the price of a litre of cider, 10p to a bottle of wine and 38p to a bottle of spirits. Beer drinkers have got the best deal with the average pint falling by 1p per pint.

For those of you running your own business an increase to the VAT threshold will help keep some of you out of VAT for another year. The threshold which determines whether a person or business must register for VAT will increase to £79,000 from 1st April 2013. It is appreciated that the economic situation is taking its toll on small business, so the deregistration limit has also been raised to £77,000 which will enable many individuals and business to come out of VAT altogether.

Overall, it was evident that economic growth was an important issue this year.

The message is clear: The UK is both a good place to do business and to base your business. With an Employment Allowance taking the first £2,000 off the National Insurance bill for every employer from April 2014, it is noticeable that support for small businessesisa key consideration for our beleaguered Chancellor.

So overall there were very few surprises and very few headline grabbing changes. Most of us will be counting the increase to our pocket in terms of a meal out rather than enough for a family holiday.

Buying a new home can be an exciting but sometimes slightly daunting prospect.

For many, choosing the perfect place to live and then looking forward to moving in is an experience to be savoured.

And the purchasing process can be easy and straightforward, according to Paul Sams – partner and conveyancing specialist at Eric Robinsons Solicitors. He gives his tips for a simple and enjoyable buying experience.

1. Budget - You will already have thought about how much you can afford to spend on a new home – and given yourself a budget. In addition to your deposit, make sure you have set aside money for any little extras, like a mortgage survey (about £400) and local searches (about £200). These payments will need to be made before you complete your purchase.

2. Choose your solicitor or conveyancer carefully - Your housebuilder will be able to advise and provide you with details of experienced local professionals.

Above all, make sure you talk to a human being – rather than dealing with them only online. Also, choose a solicitor who is based in the area near to your new home. They may know things that you don’t about the history of the area.

3. Have your identification documents ready - In order to buy your new home, you will need to prove that you are who you say you are. This is a straightforward process of providing original identification documents or copies that have been certified by someone in a position of authority, such as another firm of solicitors or bank.

Have these documents ready to avoid delays.

4. Keep your finances simple - You will need to provide details and evidence of your income and outgoings, so that all parties know you can afford to buy your new home. To save time and effort, try to make sure that these are all shown in one bank or building society account.

5. Have your deposit ready - The deposit for your new home is required at the time you exchange contacts with your builder. Make sure this is ready and waiting in an accessible account. If not, there could be a delay before you can exchange and then complete.

6. Pay attention to detail - Make sure you read any information from your solicitor carefully. They will usually point out important factors but you should make time to familiarise yourself with the details of your new home and your contract documents.

7. Stay in touch - Your builder and solicitor will keep in touch with you throughout the entire process – keeping you up-to-date with progress. But that does not mean you can’t contact them if you have any questions or concerns.

Fetzer White Zinfandel Rosé Spring time at last!

And away with the ‘Winter Blues’ - well hopefully, anyway! It always makes us feel gloomy and downin-the-mouth this time of year, as a result of the freezing cold wet weather we really just want to forget now! And, about time too!

There again, being able to shake off the recession would be good? Not that I can promise anything on that score! Even so, look on the bright side, that’s what I say! Be cheerful, be happy! Well, at least, just for the next few minutes, if you can.

Because spring really is a fantastic time of year for partying, getting together with family and friends - or maybe, with someone very special! So, why not join me and celebrate ‘everything that is spring’ with this, my second, wine of the month.

Fetzer White Zinfandel Rosé How can I describe it? On its own: elegant, lovely, with flavours of cherries, strawberries, pineapples and grapefruit. What can I say, absolutely sublime! And, interestingly enough reminds me a little of when you sit back and relax on freshly cut grass, on a summer’s day… full of body, with a lot going on, there is no doubt at all this wine definitely has a story to tell. As if - and I can hardly believe I am saying this - the wine maker was in love when he made it! I know? It is such a beautifully romantic wine; with essences of first date couples, intimate liaisons, comforting picnics, barbeques, and evenings-out with best friends. But, be warned, it is a bit of a showoff on the quiet! As if saying, “Try me! You will love me, I promise! For I’m not your ordinary cheap rosé! I am unique! And, I go well with food!”

This is why - if it is not being too presumptuous - you can so easily see yourself spending time in the kitchen preparing a romantic meal for you and your

partner. Or maybe your first date? Now there’s a thought!

For, as an accompaniment to food, Fetzer White Zinfandel Rosé pictured here (Fetzer, by the way, I only mention it because it can be confusing, is the vineyard or winery, in California, USA, where they grow the grapes and make the wine; and White Zinfandel is the type of red grape yes red, not white grape - the wine is made from, the red grape skins being removed just in time, after the crushing process, to give the wine its perfect rosé colour) Waitrose price, at the time of printing: £7.99 a bottle - goes particularly well with Asian dishes. And with Thai prawn and rice noodle salad, and Thai dressing - which you can get as a ready-made in Asda - your senses, I promise you, will go into overdrive! Other than that, this outstanding Rosé just yearns for the company of dishes such as chicken pesto pasta, and anything barbeque. Though, I do find certain cheeses tend to make the wine taste a little bitter.

But that might just be my taste-buds.

Anyway, I’ll leave that for you to decide as and when. And, perhaps you could let me know what you think? So, why not seize the opportunity and take a trip out? And enjoy a picnic in some of the best picnic hotspots in Hampshire!

Nearest to us are: Queen Elizabeth Country Park - Southsea Common, ideal for picnics and BBQs (in designated areas) - and not forgetting, of course, Hayling Island with its 3 miles of award-winning Blue Flag beaches and unspoilt coastal walks. A ’Light’ Chocolate Cake Recipe for you to Enjoy!

You might well be asking how does ‘light’ and chocolate go together. This recipe has been refined by reducing the amount of sugar and fat to make it ‘lighter’ in calories. It has also been made ‘light’ by changing the techniques employed in the preparation of the cake, along with the addition of a couple of extra ingredients.

The recipe uses dark chocolate which has many health benefits and unfortunately space constraints mean that I am unable to go into any detail here. Line 23 cm loose bottom cake tin with grease proof paper.

2. Separate 3 eggs and place egg whites into additional mixing bowl.

3. Break remaining 3 eggs into the bowl with the egg yolks and add caster sugar whisk until fluffy.

4. Break chocolate into small pieces in microwaveable dish and add butter and then microwave on low power until melted. Stir mixture.

5. Add chocolate mixture to sugar and eggs and beat until mixed completely.

6. Mix in ground almonds 7. Whisk egg whites until stiff.

8. Fold in eggs whites into egg and chocolate mixture and flaked almonds.

9. Fold in baking powder and self-raising flour if using.

10. Pour mixture into a lined tin and bake in fan oven 190 for 20 to 25 minutes or until cooked.

11. Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Forest of Bere Bowmen At Forest of Bere Bowmen we are looking forward to the Spring and Summer seasons at our field. Although we shoot outside all year round, this winter it has mainly been very cold or very wet and although the numbers shooting on Sunday, our club shoot day, have been good, it has not been as pleasant as some winters.

Our first big event this year is our Open Day on Saturday April 13th, at our field at Horndean. From 2 until 5pm anybody who wants to have a try at archery, can come along and have a go.

Directions to the field will be shown from the centre of the village.

Should anybody decide they wish to have lessons in archery, we run two Beginners Courses, starting in May, where we provide all of the equipment. Anybody age 8 and above can join these courses.

Last year our beginners ranged from 8 to 70+. One enjoyable thing about archery is that different ages can train and compete together. We have 3 generations of one family as members.

During the summer we run monthly competitions on a handicap basis. With the handicap system newer members stand a very good chance of winning the medals.

However some of our long- term members do win sometimes and last year one winner was in her eighties.

Our two big club events are our Longbow Shoot and the Challenge Shoot, which both occur in May. For the Longbow Shoot archers can only shoot longbows, which are bows made of wood with no sighting attachments. They are similar to the bows used in the Medieval Period.

Archers come from other clubs, mainly in Hampshire, Sussex and Surrey. It has always been an enjoyable day with friendships made and friendships renewed.

The Challenge Shoot is always on the Bank Holiday Monday at the end of May. Teams of 6 archers each from local clubs compete for a trophy and medals. Different types of bow can be used, the only criteria being that teams must consist of both males and females. The match is followed by a BBQ so nice weather is important. It has only been adversely affect by weather once and we hope our luck holds this year too.

Waterlooville Events in the Planning

Plans for events in Waterlooville are underway… ∑ There will, of course, be the Summer Fete at the Waterlooville Recreation Ground on Wednesday August 14th which, hopefully, will be even bigger than last year. ∑ I also have plans for various musical events to be held at The Bandstand in Waterlooville Shopping Precinct, which may include a Bandstand Marathon Event some time in April. Full details of this will be published in the Town Centre notice board. ∑ Following on from the success of last Christmas (my thanks to Neil, the owner of Clix in London Road and Richard Shaw who helped bring Santa’s grotto to Waterlooville), I am hoping for Christmas 2013 to be even more memorable. Santa has more surprises in his sack for this year! ∑ I have also been putting together various plans for a 200th Anniversary Celebration of the founding of Waterlooville, which relates to the historical Battle of Waterloo. I will be hoping to highlight some of the historical features of Waterloo, as it was then called. This will be in June 2015.

Horndean’s Older Persons Enabling forum (HOPE) Horndean’s Older Persons Enabling forum (HOPE) are hosting their first ever exhibition of services for the older person at Merchistoun Hall in Horndean on Wednesday May 15th this year.

HOPE is a service in itself provided by Horndean Community Association who manage and operate from their home at Merchistoun Hall in Horndean. The day will run from 2pm – 8.30pm where a host of organisations, aimed at supporting the older person, will be on show to promote their many varied and valuable services they provide.

This event is put on as part of their four point action plan that HOPE has set

itself, making our community aware of the many services that are provided for the parish of Horndean, to identify any possible gaps of need and suggest some new activities and facilities that the community may wish to run in the parish. Men over the age of 50 are being urged to get their prostate checked at a special organised event taking place in Waterlooville by the Central Branch of PCaSO Prostate Cancer Network, a local charity providing help, support and information to those affected.

The event is a bid to educate more men and alleviate the fears associated with checking for prostate cancer. It will take place in the Centre at the Sacred Heart and St Peter the Apostle Church, 356a London Road, Waterlooville, PO7 7SR and will give men the opportunity to find whether they may have a problem with the prostate in just 10 minutes using the latest ‘Bioscan’ equipment.

The test, called a PSA, uses a small blood sample taken from the thumb. On average 8% of men test positive with 15% recording a borderline score. The good side is the fact that those men are in the system to be treated or put on active surveillance.

The Bioscan will provide the means to test men anywhere, anytime and may just help to reduce the present high mortality from this type of cancer.

The session will be held on Saturday 27 April from 10.00am to 4.00pm.

Gurkha History and Culture Revealed

at Special Interest Weekend – 10th - 12th May

The Holiday Inn Winchester will be hosting a special Gurkha Interest Weekend at the hotel to celebrate the bravery of the indefatigable Gurkhas and to provide a fascinating insight into their history, culture and traditions, with talks, lectures, a special dinner and a visit to the Winchester based Gurkha Museum complete with authentic Nepalese curry lunch. A donation from each booking will go to the Gurkha Welfare Trust to support Gurkha ex-servicemen and their dependents.

The story of the service of the Gurkhas began in 1815 and since then they have fought alongside their British comrades in most of the major conflicts around the world – from the North West Frontier, through two world wars, The Falklands war and in more recent actions in Kosovo, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan.

The weekend will begin on Friday 10th May with a lecture by the Gurkha Museum Curator, followed by dinner in the hotel’s award winning Morn Hill Brassiere.

Saturday will be a full day with a visit to the nearby Gurkha Museum at Peninsula Barracks in Winchester, including a film, tour, pre-lunch drinks in the Medal Room

Havant & District Citizens Advice Bureau This month we take a look at questions on pay day loans and the so-called “bedroom tax”: Q: I took out a pay day loan to get me to the end of a tight month. I thought I’d be able to pay it back quickly, but the interest rate is high and it’s making my debt problems worse. The money goes straight out of my bank account so I’ve got no choice but to pay. I’m worried I have to take out another loan to cover the payments – what else can I do?

A: Pay day lenders make their money from high interest rates and the fact that people often can’t pay back their instalments.

Don’t be tempted to take out another loan or to “roll over” your existing loan, which pay day lenders often offer as a quick solution. This will be more expensive in the long run.

When you took out the loan you will have agreed for the company to automatically take a certain amount from your account (through something called a continuous payment authority). Most people think that it’s up to the company making the withdrawals to stop them – this isn’t true.Your bank must stop these payments if you ask them to, so get in touch with your bank straight away.

The next step is to organise a realistic repayment plan and prioritise other debts.

Havant & District Citizens Advice Bureau can help you do this. We regularly negotiate repayment plans for customers who are struggling with unfair pay day loans which mean that they can pay them back without getting caught in a debt spiral.

If you’ve got other debts, it’s really important to prioritise the ones that are most important to pay back quickly. These include your mortgage or rent, gas and electricity, and council tax. You can find detailed advice on which debts to prioritise at the Adviceguide website from Citizens Advice: http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/england/debt _e/debt_help_with_debt_e.htm An increasing number of people are turning to pay day loans in these tight times, so you’re not alone. To make sure that people aren’t getting treated unfairly, Citizens Advice is monitoring how well pay day lenders are sticking to their Good Practice Customer Charter. You can play an important part in helping us monitor their behaviour by filling in the survey on the Citizens Advice website www.adviceguide.org.uk .You’ll also find advice and template letters to send to the pay day loan company and to the financial

ombudsman if you’ve been wrongly treated.

The crucial thing is to take action now, while you’re still in control of your finances.

Q: I’ve heard that housing benefit is going to be cut for people who have a spare room. How will this affect me?

A: If you live in a council or housing association home and claim Housing Benefit to help you pay your rent, your Housing Benefit may be cut from April 2013. This could happen if you're of working age and your home is considered too large for the number of people in your household. You will be responsible for the rent not covered by Housing Benefit. If you don’t make up the shortfall you may end up losing your home. If you think you might be affected, don't panic. Check out your options and get help now. Options you could consider: • make up the shortfall yourself from your other benefits or savings, if you have any; • try to increase your income from paid work, for example by getting extra hours; • make sure you're getting all the benefits you can, for example money to help you with the costs of a disability;

They may also offer you a sum of money or other help to encourage you to downsize; apply to your local council Housing Benefit department for a Discretionary Housing Payment.

However, councils only have a limited amount of money and will need to prioritise payments to disabled tenants whose homes have been specially adapted for them, and payments to foster carers; take in a boarder or lodger to live in your spare room. This would mean the room no longer counts as being spare for Housing Benefit purposes.

You will need to ask your landlord for permission to do this, but landlords are expected to agree in most cases. Remember that income from a lodger may affect your benefits.

Motoring Costs lead to Scooter Revival

With the price of fuel and insurance costs always rising along with the expense of public transport, the option of running a small motorbike or scooter is far more economical than running a car.

Scooters can reach up to 140 miles per gallon and the road tax cost is only £16 a year. Easy to park in city centres, space and top boxes for storage they make a great choice for journeys round town. With all different styles of scooters available now, there is one to suit everyone. Easy to store and park on the road, all you need is to attend a simple “CBT” (Compulsory

Basic Training) which costs around £100 and can be completed in under one day. If you have already obtained your car driving licence before February 2001, you can ride a 50cc scooter without completing this training.

The only legal requirement is that you must wear a crash helmet but obviously the more protection you have the better.

WATERLOOVILLE & COWPLAIN ALLOTMENT GARDENS

The Waterlooville & Cowplain Allotments and Gardens Association came into being at the time of the Dig for Victory campaign largely with the generous support of the local businessmen. At that time there were more than 200 plots sited behind Chapel Lane, and the Wellington Inn, which is now occupied by the ASDA Store, Community Centre and car park but the remnant of this site can still be seen behind the Fire Station at Forest End. An Annual Show was introduced almost immediately with Mr E W Borrow of Padnell Farm donating the first cup “for the best White Potato”! A Trading Hut was established on a plot at the end of Chapel Lane with a Membership limited to 1,500 Allotment Holders and Gardeners from the adjoining area which began to expand rapidly after the war was over. Demand gradually declined in the 70’s and 80’s and the primary site behind Chapel Lane and Swiss Road was developed providing a much needed Community Centre and shortly after the ASDA supermarket and

the Waterlooville bypass. The Waterlooville Association erected a new Trading Hut at the Forest End Garage Site which is where they can be found today, manned by volunteers and open every Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 1130 am. Provision for new allotments was made at Plant Farm to the South and West of Forest End to provide about 90 plots varying in size from 5 rods to 10 rods (120 to 245 sq. meters) and this site opened in May 1994 and is now the main site for Waterlooville. There has been a massive resurgence in the popularity of allotments and over the past five years allotment sites have become fully let and now have long waiting lists.

The plot forms an important part of their life providing as they do access to affordable, fresh vegetables, fruit and flowers with the added benefits of physical exercise and social activity regardless of age, race, culture and sex. It is a place where people can indulge in two of life’s passions - gardening and talking- and can do them in the peace and quiet of an allotment site.

Havant RFC Keep Fighting in Relegation Battle Havant RFC just scraped an all important 5 point win on Saturday 23 March, when local 'legend' Dylan Raubenheimer forced his way over for his second try of the match in the dying seconds of the game, to make it 33-28.

It had been expected to be a relatively comfortable run out against already relegated Old Colfeians, but they were more resilient than anticipated, and, with less than 10 minutes to go, were actually in the lead 28-25.

With two teams already relegated, there's a desperately close battle between five clubs (including Havant and local rivals Gosport & Fareham) to stay away from the third relegation spot at the end of the season. With a match in hand over their rivals, Havant have it in their own hands to stay safe, but three of their remaining games are away from home and the only home match is against runaway leaders, East Grinstead.

It's going to be a nail biting run-in to the end of the season for the Havant RFC 'faithful'.

Creative Quarter A Message from local author; Dee Williams Last October, which incidentally is Breast Cancer awareness month, we were told by an independent review that some screening for breast cancer could result in sending women for treatment that didn’t really need it. Will it put women off?

Every year 1,300 lives are saved through screening. This is huge number of families that have had their loved ones saved. While it shows that some women may have received unnecessary treatment, perhaps after this report it will be closely monitored.

When the screening van is in your area and even if you are not in the age group 50 to 70 years you can still go for screening.

Just phone your hospital and you will be given an appointment.

I feel very strongly about this as twenty years ago I lost my 32-year-old daughter with this terrible disease. She was told three times by her GP that young girls don’t get cancer. Screening, although available back then, wasn’t as wide spread

as it is now, so who knows, if it had been available to her, the outlook may have been very different.

I am Breakthrough Breast Cancer’s local representative and as such get a lot of information sent me. As their representative I am invited to attend many groups and venues that have raised money.

From pubs in Portsmouth, to line dancing at Bognor Regis, as well as a golf club and other interesting venues.

I am able to tell them how important their wonderful fundraising is to finance the research centre in London.

I have been there many times as a £1,000 challenger. Anybody can be a £1,000 challenger and every two years after you have raised that amount you are invited to the research centre to have your chosen name inscribed on a wall. They don’t have to have suffered from cancer, just someone who is special to you. The wall will be there forever and it’s a lovely way to keep their memory alive.You also get a chance to go

round the research centre and see what wonderful work they do and how your £1,000 has helped to progress their research into this terrible disease.

In the summer of 2013 I will be visiting their latest wall and that one will have my auntie’s name on. This will be the seventh name I have there, having raised £7,000 through giving talks as an author. (I have had published twenty two London sagas.)

It is so important to have a mammogram every three years. It may be a bit intrusive but at the same time it does save lives. So please take advantage of this service, as it could be your life it saves.

Considering a change of career? Go for it!

Over a period of 14 years I have pursued the creative side of my personality.

I started out by making greeting cards mainly for work colleagues, friends, family.

In 2010 I suffered a period of critical illness and major surgery and this allowed me an extended time of reflection and contemplation. I thought long about what I really wanted to do. I was always drawn back to my creative side and it was then that the change to my career path was galvanised. I now work full time as an artist with the mediums of ceramics and fused glass and still make greeting cards.

their career or pursuing art and craft I would say go for it. Life is too short for regrets. It is a brilliant way to express yourself, rewarding too when people buy your work. The best thing for me in making this my career is being my own boss. Managing your own time and not having to clock watch is fantastic. I often make into the small hours because I get so engrossed in what I am doing. You do need to be focused and be prepared to work hard at getting your work seen. Expect rejection but at the same time believe in yourself and what you create.

MAY ARTS TRAIL WELCOMES NEW ARTISTS

The annual popular May Days Arts Trail will take place in Waterlooville, Leigh Park and Havant on 18th and 19th May, the last of a series of Trails in the borough, spread over 4 weekends. This Angela Oakley in her studio is a great opportunity to explore and discover the talents of local artists and makers, often in their own open studios, where you can look, touch and ask questions. Widley painter Samm Mackinnon, a regular exhibitor, and winner of the BBC Wildlife Artist 2011 and 2012, is joining forces with 3 friends, Sue Colyer, Barbara Jones and Brenda Potter. Carol Dilley, whose work is currently on show at Havant’s Spring Arts Centre, together with Ali Fountain, can be visited in Catherington.

Welcome newcomer to the Trail, painter Arnold Bisset is also showing his beautiful landscapes in Waterlooville. The Springwood Community Centre will be throwing open its doors to showcase’ Waterlooville Arts’, and here you will meet Angela Oakley and see her hand crafted and kiln fired art works.

And the local Woodstock Group, Janine Chambers, Debbie Daniels, Joan Woodland, Samm Mackinnon Kim Malhoney and John Butler will be exhibiting their clay, glass, felt and wood in Leigh Road, Havant. People on Loan @ the Human Library by Carolyn Barber Thanks to funding from the Big Lottery, the Good Mental Health Cooperative is launching a series of Human Library events during 2013 in Portsmouth and South Hampshire.

The Human Library is an international equalities movement which promotes positive social change in over 60 countries.

At a Human Library ‘Books' are people, and 'reading' is a conversation.

Human Books are volunteers who share personal experience to challenge prejudice, stigma and discrimination.

This is what two of our volunteers said about being involved in their first Human

Library event in Portsmouth: “Loved every minute of it. I think it’s a fantastic way of reducing stigma, right across the board” “I enjoyed it very much. Met some very interesting people. I also took a Book out and learned something new. Would love to do more”.

Step 3 If you want to decorate or attach ribbon to your cover now is the time to do it before you put it together. I have used freemotion sewing and attached pieces of ric rac to one of my covers to make it unique. I think it works well with the batik fabric I used.

Step 4 To assemble, stitch up one long side of your cover with a 1cm seam Turn down the top edge of the cover by 0.5cm and stitch Turn down the hem again by 1cm and top stitch. You can do a fancy stitch here if you have one on your machine and use a contrasting thread.

With right sides together, stitch along the bottom and up the remaining long side with a 1cm seam.

Trim seams and clip corners Turn right side out and push out corners.

Step 5 Make up the lining in the same way without the interlining. Do not turn it through then put the lining inside the cover and hand stitch the top edge to attach the lining. Hand stitching is the easiest way as the edge of the phone cover is quite small and it would be tricky to get a neat finish.

We care about education!

Since last month, many of my family and friends have contacted me to comment on my article in the last issue of PO7&PO8, and have shared their views with me. This is really nice to hear, and these kinds of discussions are what I’m hoping to achieve by writing these articles.

So this month, I’m going to tackle a massive prejudice that all teenagers face.

The ridiculous view that we don’t care about our education. This is not true. I can tell you from personal experience that when everyone in year 11 attended the English Language exam that was sat in January 2013, our teachers were very impressed, and I think that this is conclusive proof that we teenagers do care. We understand the whole drama of standing out from the crowd, especially in these difficult times, where jobs are hard to find and employment rates are at an all-time high (20.5% 16-24 year-olds unemployed).

Furthermore, there are some days that all us teens can talk about is the terrifying prospect of making our own choices. What

college? What courses? What job do I go for? And even now, months away from starting college, I cannot decide on a career, and I dedicate some portions of my free time to the research of jobs in the media. I know I said last time I was going for journalism, but them something new comes up and I’m like, “OMG, I wanna do that.” So, in conclusion, if people didn’t care, they wouldn’t be using the careers department at school, they wouldn’t discuss it freely with their friends, they wouldn’t make plans on which university to go to.

PROPOSED MEMORIAL TO AN AUSTRALIAN AIRCREW Demolition of the heart of Horndean today reminds one of news pictures of the WWII Blitz. But how many remember that this could have been a real happening in February 1945 with attendant casualties.

In the early hours of Sunday 5th February 1945 a mosquito aircraft of RAAF 464 squadron was returning to base at Thorney Island in atrocious weather. The pilot contacted the control tower at 02.12 hours without reporting any difficulties; seconds later he flew low between cottages and the Brewers Arms, went through the roof of the Parish Hall and across the A3 road and two fields before exploding in flames next to the Police Cottage in Havant Road killing both crew members. Celebrations of the war ending 3 months later overshadowed the event.

Had the final flight path not deviated to the right on hitting the Hall the plane would most probably have ploughed into the

brewery with a disastrous outcome.

Since 1996 there has been an interest in the event and some memorial to the crew and Horndean’s history is proposed.

It is necessary to gain support of the present residents if this is to happen.

Try Short Mat Bowls

Most people have seen, on a fine summers day, groups of white-clad people playing lawn bowls, but of course the game is very much dependent on the vagaries of the English weather and not at all possible during the winter months. The game is also played indoors at selected venues but the area required does limit the number of buildings available.

A similar game, but on a smaller scale, is short mat bowls which can be played in any village or school hall where there is a social atmosphere and much less formality A carpet of foam-backed baize, 45 feet long and 6 feet wide can be rolled out on a reasonably flat floor and the same

aims and similar rules apply to that of the larger game. Much less strength and stamina is required for this game and it is suitable for all ages.

One such venue is Barton Hall on the Horndean Technology College campus, where the club of the same name meet every Tuesday throughout the year. The club wish to invite anyone from the teens upward to come and try the game (under 17, please come with a parent). We have a broad range of ages and skills so there is no need to worry about standing out in the crowd.

As we have plenty of space and mats there is no waiting about for a game and you will immediately be part of a team who will show you the ropes and basic skills as you play.

All you need is a pair of clean flat shoes to avoid soiling or damaging the mats. Bowls can be provided.

Horndean Business Network and Postcode Publications joined many local firms at the Careers Fair held in Barton Hall at Horndean Technology College. The Careers Fair was held primarily for Year 8 and 9 students (and parents) to help them make GCSE choices. For Year 10 and 11 students, there were Work Experience and post-16 opportunities.

Apprenticeships were on the agenda with firms like BAE Systems and EADS Astrium, whilst entrepreneurship was evident with Ben Phillips Enterprises. Ben is a young entrepreneur still attending Horndean Technology College, who has established a business with his own branded Screen Cleaner. Watch these pages for more from Ben!

Kennel Club Accredited Breed Rescue & members of ADCH (Association of Dogs and Cats Homes) Before becoming a helper and having lost one of our dogs, a golden retriever, I contacted LLT to see if we could help with perhaps one of their needy dogs. We’d had lots of rescues in the past so after a home visit we were offered one of the ‘specials.’

Abby, a yellow Labrador had been a breeding bitch at an appalling puppy farm.

She was very thin, filthy dirty, and with her under carriage close to the ground after having so many puppies. The dogs had been kept in concrete pens or in old lorries with wire across the back with cheap food thrown in amongst all the mess. They had no bedding or warmth.

It took a lot of shampoo to get her clean.

She was so pleased to see her rescuers that her tail hardly stopped wagging. She came to us a few days later and we began the long road to get her into good health.

Her eyesight was poor and she was found to have glaucoma in one eye and a cataract in the other so should never have been bred from. She eventually went blind but coped remarkably well.

She soon settled in and made friends with our other dogs. She clambered into a soft comfy bed with great relief but it was a while before she stopped sleeping sitting up and felt relaxed enough to lie down. She was a dear and courageous little dog who

enjoyed every moment of her new found freedom. She even ran free in the fields with the other dogs to support her.

Four months later another Lab, just 6 months, old joined us. Her mother had recently been rescued from the same puppy farm and one of her pups was handed in as an unwanted Christmas present. She was painfully thin, terrified and cowered at any sudden noise. She developed into a wonderfully gentle Labrador, who helped us on many occasions, to calm other stressed dogs and assisted in their rehabilitation by quietly keeping them company and encouraging them to play.

This is the sad reality of puppy farms. Many of the pups of these cruelly treated dogs are advertised in freebie papers or on the internet. We would appeal to people to always contact a reputable rescue or breed rescue instead of going this route whether they want a pup or older dog. It could save a lot of heartbreak and vet bills in the future as so many of the dogs are in poor health with such a bad start to their lives.

We always do a home visit to potential adopters. The dogs needing to come into rescue are assessed in their old homes to get as full a history as possible to enable us to match them to the right home.

A Mini Guide to Independent Housing

We’re almost halfway through spring (technically) and the summer holidays are creeping up like a dazed hedgehog who can’t believe it is still this cold. Shortly after those couple months of fun and sun the academic year begins again. Many of us going to, or in, higher education will then find ourselves in a new house, with new people, and a new lack of clarity of what exactly to do…well don’t fear, because I have a few little tips to help make independent housing just that little bit less difficult. So if you’re moving in with new house-mates next year or just want to have a smoother year with your current ones, have a little look at the tips below:

Tip One: Do your fair share of cleaning.You’re going to be sharing a house with other people and as much as you may like your own mess, others don’t. As long as you clean your dishes, and pick up your rubbish you should be fine and avoid problems with annoyed house-mates. Oh, and swing a hoover around once and a while just in case.

Tip Two: Learn to share: These people

aren’t your siblings, and if you eat their bag of cookies there’s no mum to keep the peace. This works both ways and its good practice to give a little. Or you may find yourself really needing some of your house-mate’s milk, but he won’t let you because you snapped when he took a bit of butter. Keeping tabs isn’t a good idea either. If you calculate everything anyone’s ever borrowed be sure to remember your own takings at least, or suffer an embarrassing backlash.

Tip Three: Be flexible. Like you, everyone else has a way they like to be in their own home. If you go into independent housing, with complete strangers, and expect to act how you did at home without contention then you’re going to have a hard year. It’s important to try and be a little understanding of your housemates and at the same time not be too pushy with your own habits. If you are a budding naturalist, then I’m sorry, maybe just keep it to your room. If you’re not willing to compensate on your home comforts then you might find yourself having to look for a new house at the end of the year.

There you go. Three little easy tips to help you have a drama free year in independent housing. As a second year about to go into their third year of independent housing, I hope you take on some of this advice and have a great time at university.

Havant Borough Sports Association 33rd Annual Sports Awards 2013 Oliver Nail is crowned ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ at the annual HBSA Annual Awards held on Thursday 28th February at Park Community School.

The event, held for each of the last 33 years, recognises the top performing sports people, team and sports volunteers within Havant Borough for 2012. This year was no exception with a wealth of people who performed at international, national and county levels from a number of sports from Athletics to Tenpin Bowling. In all over 30 people were recognised by the Association.

The event was addressed by the Mayor of Havant and hosted by the Chairman, John Hogg. The main speaker this year was Multi Paralympian Peter Hull MBE, County Development Officer for Disability Sport, who gave an excellent and inspiring talk on what it takes to reach the ultimate goal – in his case 3 Gold swimming medals at the Seoul Paralympics in 1988.

During the evening John Hogg was caught short of a few words when he was recognised for his contribution to sport within the borough having been chairman for the Havant Sunday Football league for over 30 years and Chairman of the HBSA for a similar period. In these roles he has worked tirelessly for the good of sport

working closely with Havant Borough Council and many local clubs.

Over 120 parents, volunteers and sports people attended the evening. Special thanks were given to the parents and volunteers on behalf of the athletes for their support without which sporting success at all levels would not be possible.

I chanced on this route a couple of years back and as yet have not even gone as far as Hambledon but it’s there and one day I may well stretch the limbs and head out for places on route, why not join me.

First I could do with a cake at the café and idle many minutes away, with anyone who will listen, about our area that had a part in civil war history.

Meanwhile if you see a bloke dressed regally, probably donning a big wig, then tell him his ship is waiting.

A regular feature on local restaurants for your enjoyment - By The Editor

One of UK’s top Catering and Hospitality educational ‘Centres of Excellence’ We visited South Downs College Restaurant on a Tuesday evening in February and were greeted on arrival by Aaron, a 2nd year student, who directed us to the fully-licensed bar for an aperitif.

We were then shown to our table and introduced to Luke, our Head Waiter for the evening. Our first impression was of a lively, contemporary design with a professional restaurant environment. The restaurant was full and included a party of 32 who had pre-ordered their meal.

The menu changes every two weeks

and on this particular evening it was the responsibility of Student Head Chefs’ Ruth and Liam who compiled the menu and sourced the ingredients locally. We all decided to chose a different dish from each course and I selected the Arbroath Fish cakes with quails egg and curry oil, whilst my friends chose the Pressed Rabbit Terrine, Winter Beetroot salad with goats’ curd and Jerusalem Artichoke Soup.

Our main course choices were Loin of Venison, Ricotta and Butternut Squash Tortellini, 8-hour braised oxtail suet

pudding and as the Pan Fried Gurnard on the menu had sold out rapidly, we were offered an alternative of Grilled Cod. This was followed by a Green Apple Sorbet to cleanse our palate.

After all this delicious food our appetites were beginning to wane but we could not resist the ‘Roobarb and Custard’ sharing board. This consisted of several desserts featuring the flavours of rhubarb and custard. Freshly brewed filter coffee and petit fours completed our delicious

meal.

Taking into account that all the food is prepared by students, the standard was very high. Carefully watched over by Tricia, the Food Service Programme Manager, all the students who served us were friendly, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, confident, and efficient and clearly have a great future ahead of them. They really have created a restaurant here instead of a classroom. The food is top notch - it is one of the best eateries in the area and a great price. Busy too - so a good atmosphere. Well done.

We all agreed it had been an excellent evening. Reservations are recommended.

THE WELLINGTON INN, WATERLOOVILLE - ITS EARLY HISTORY

Always referred to as Waterlooville’s second inn, after the Heroes of Waterloo, the Wellington Inn in London Road, started its days in around 1861. It was built for the sum of £1,000, at the junction of London Road and Chapel Lane, by the first owner and landlord, Samuel Jonathan Silvester, a member of a well-known local family. In the census for 1861 the premises are recorded as unoccupied (Silvester, described as a builder was living close by in Wellington Cottage). In June 1862 we get the first record of the new inn when to celebrate Coronation Day of that year the local press advertised: ‘Samuel Silvester begs to inform his Friends and the Public in General that Parties visiting the neighbourhood on this occasion will find ample Accommodation at the WELLINGTON INN, where Refreshments of the best Quality may be had’.

In September 1863 Silvester was granted a licence to sell spirits at the inn, this was in respect of the growing population of the village and he boasted at the time that: For many years there had been but one licensed house in Waterloo, and since then Waterloo had increased very much, both as size and subsequently in population, and the demand for accommodation had been increased, so much so in fact, had found it necessary to increase his house accommodation, and had erected commodious stabling and a coach-house besides he had six bedrooms which were all available for lodgers. Recently, too the master of the hounds had taken up his residence there, and this also increased the number of visitors and called for increased provisions for their accommodation.

In October 1866 the Wellington Inn was advertised to be let with the Hampshire Telegraph stating that the inn

was ‘doing a good trade, possession immediate, income about £90.’ Ownership of the inn at around this time becomes a little blurred and certainly it would appear that George Henty & Son of Chichester were supplying the inn with beer if not renting the property themselves. Confusion seems to have come to a head in May 1868 when Samuel Silvester, at this time very ill, was arrested and put into police custody for some unknown misdemeanour. What became of Samuel Silvester at this time is unclear but in August 1871 the Wellington Inn was again put up for sale: On Thursday, August 3rd, 1871, by direction of the mortgage with full power of sale, KING & KING are instructed to SELL by AUCTION, at the Wellington Inn, Waterloo, on the above day, at three for four o’clock, the following valuable Property:THE “WELLINGTON INN,” WATERLOO, A well accustomed and substantially erected Licensed House, containing capital public accommodation, with large yard at side containing capital stabling with loft over, good range of lock-up coach-houses with carpenter’s workshop over etc. Range of stabling and coachhouses in the rear, with large loft and stores over, now let to Messrs Henty of Chichester. (Hampshire Telegraph 29th July 1871) In around 1902 the inn was acquired by Richard Scott, who also owned the Queens

Temperance Hotel, situated on the opposite side of Chapel Lane and standing almost next door. At this time the name ‘SCOTTS’ could be seen over the doorways of both premises. At the same time the new Horndean Light Railway was set up, running from Cosham to its destination at Horndean, and passing in front of the inn, making it easier for visitors to travel to and from Waterlooville.

To the left of the inn stood the Wellington Club Room and Billiard Saloon, now part of the main Public House and in front of this, hanging from a pole, was a fine inn-sign of the Duke of Wellington sitting astride his horse. Further along, past the Wellington Club, stood a terrace of cottages known as Wellington Terrace, probably built at the same time as Samuel Silvester built the inn.

Now a popular public house within the thriving town of Waterlooville, the Wellington can now justly claim fame as being the oldest surviving public house in the town.

Grainger brings English Garden Cities to the 21st Century With the UK officially in a housing crisis, there has been much debate on how the problems can be solved. Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, believes that Garden Cities could go some way towards solving the housing crisis, and many politicians have advocated the idea of creating communities with parks and schools, rather than suburban sprawl. The heart of Grainger’s Berewood housing scheme development in Waterlooville champions the Garden City concept. With the first phase of the development underway, we take a look at how and why Garden Cities developed.

Ebenezer Howard (1850 – 1928) The Garden City concept was founded

by Ebenezer Howard in the nineteenth century, in reaction to the environmental and social concerns which stemmed from the industrial revolution. A huge surge in the population of England and Wales triggered hasty, intensive and uncontrolled urbanisation which resulted in poor housing conditions. Lack of sanitation, cholera and pollution were commonplace.

Undoubtedly, the need for decent housing was unquestionable. Howard’s answer was the philanthropic and holistic concept of the Garden City, a concept that has since received worldwide acclaim and has changed housing as it is today.

Howard drew inspiration from the Lever brothers and the Cadburys, who pioneered the Philanthropic Movement by providing housing communities for their workforce. The Lever brothers, the original founders of Unilever, moved out of their

small factory in Warrington to Port Sunlight in Merseyside. Likewise, the Cadburys expanded and moved out of central Birmingham to a greenfield site they named Bournville. The Lever brothers and the Cadburys showed interest in the health and welfare of their employees, and aimed to ameliorate the condition of the workingclass by providing good quality housing in attractive and lasting communities.

The heart of Howard’s ideals was holistically planned new settlements which enhanced the natural environment, provided high quality affordable housing and locally accessible jobs. Key principles include generous green space linked to the countryside which included a mix of public and private areas of well managed high quality gardens and open space, local food sourcing, and access to local cultural, recreational and shopping facilities. Howard believed that residents always had to make an unfulfilling choice between living in isolated rural or congested city living. His original concept of a Garden City was therefore to combine the “health of the country with the comforts of the town”, and to offer beauty with social opportunity.

Howard translated vision into reality when he gained funding for the first Garden City when he founded the Garden Cities Association in 1899. Howard’s company First Garden City Ltd began construction in 1903 on the first Garden City in Letchworth, Hertfordshire. The second Garden City in Welwyn, Hertfordshire followed in 1919.

Letchworth was designed as a zoned town, with the industry concentrated in one area surrounded by industrial housing.

town for the wealthy. Architects Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin, made sure to incorporate existing trees, roads and large amount of green open space, as well as developing a central commercial area.

Central to Howard’s ethos, his company repatriated all profits back into Letchworth. Welwyn Garden City brought advantages of greater accessibility to and from London. Its plan fully represented Howard’s concept of functional zoning, with zones of a town area, shopping area, factory area, agricultural area and woodlands.

Howard’s achievement in building a new city became hugely influential later in town planning.

The same principles that were applied in Letchworth and Welwyn, health and welfare, are now being applied to Berewood. The provision of a good environment comprising green open spaces and excellent transport links together with

sustainability, are all key factors. Grainger, together with its master planner architects, Robert Adam, has very much kept to Howard’s original vision and guidelines of Garden Cities, syncing them with the wants and needs of the local community as well, something that Grainger does extremely well and an area in which it has lots of experience in.

Similar to Letchworth, Berewood is divided into three zones; the Market Town, the Garden Suburbs and the Southern Village. The Market Town is currently being built, and the next phase of development will take place in the Garden Suburbs zone, an area which takes direct references from the movements pioneered by Howard. Grainger is currently in discussions about which house builder will complete the second phase of the Berewood housing scheme.

Capture that “Moment in Time”

Japics Photographic, commercial and portrait photographers based in Horndean, is offering a prize for the most entertaining photo in our fun photo competition. The photo must capture an impromptu moment where your children, pets, friends, parents, possessions etc do something that will make us all smile! Here are some that Penny from Japics has captured herself on her camera phone to give you some inspiration!

The Prize is a family (up to 4 people) or pet photo shoot at their studio in Horndean, with an 8”x6” print (framed or on canvas).

Havant Rugby Football Club is the largest and most successful Rugby Club on the South Coast, and the Club enjoys extensive Clubhouse facilities.

The upstairs Club Hall has a capacity for 160 people: 100 seated comfortably for event such as weddings, wakes, christenings and family parties - sorry no lift.

The Club has recently undertaken redecoration of its bar facilities and is very fortunate to have a large fully licensed club bar for hire seven days a week.

The bad news is: this is the time that “hibernating” rabbit fleas wake up and, along with mosquitoes, spread myxomatosis to both pet rabbits and wild rabbits.

The good news is: those clever people working hard to help us protect our pets have come up with a brand NEW vaccination for rabbits that can protect them for a whole year against this horrid, deadly disease.

Just one vaccination a year can now keep your furry friend safe from myxomatosis and another highly infectious but deadly disease, Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD).

We considered explaining the full effects of these diseases to urge you to take action quickly but, to be honest; they are too horrid to go into the details here.

Suffice to say you really wouldn’t want it to happen to your rabbit, or anyone else’s.

Over the last few years, Purbrook Veterinary Practice has seen a high increase in the number of rabbits contracting myxomatosis. If you are concerned because your rabbit is lethargic, has “sleepy eyes” or puffy, fluid filled swellings around the head and face, then please give us a ring.

But PLEASE, PLEASE don’t let this happen, keep up your flea control and vaccinate your rabbits now against myxomatosis and RHD…just one vaccination a year will protect your pet and do your bit to help stop the spread of these deadly diseases.

Jewels not tools! That is how we should treat our nails!!

My interest in nails was sparked when I embarked on and gained a manicure and pedicure qualification in 2004. Since then I have taken additional training, my favourite being Shellac. This is a hybrid polish set with a u.v. lamp and with the correct aftercare should last two weeks.

Nails reflect our personalities and are one way in which we define ourselves.

Never before have we had so much choice in shape, colour and design.

Our hands are quite often one of the first things we notice about a person but sometimes the most neglected. Here are some pointers to keep them in tip top condition: • Have a healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

• Keep your hands clean and moisturised by applying hand cream several times a day, especially last thing at night.

• Also before bed massage in cuticle oil, this will keep the cuticles supple increasing the blood flow to the surface aiding circulation and bringing important nutrients to the natural nail.

• Use gloves for housework and gardening.

• Have regular manicures and pedicures.

• Keep a crystal file in your handbag, it will not harbour any fungal or bacterial diseases and can be easily sanitised in hot soapy water.

Go Feet’ Foot Care Guide Put a spring in your step this season with local foot health practice, Go Feet’s Foot Care Guide: CHECK – Get into a routine to inspect your feet daily, use a mirror if necessary to see the sole of your foot. This is especially important if you are diabetic or have any other health conditions affecting your circulation or nervous system to pick up any small injury or infection as soon as possible.

1. CLEAN - Keep your feet clean and wash them regularly, think about gently using a pumice stone to help reduce any callus or dry skin.

2. DRY - Keep your feet dry between and beneath the toes; feet are especially susceptible to fungal infections due to warm, dark, damp conditions.

3. TRIM NAILS - Trim nails carefully, a further Top Tip, is to cut nails after bathing as they are often softer and easier to cut (ensure you don’t leave any corners that may later grow in), ask a member of your family or a friend if you are having trouble seeing or reaching your feet.

4. MOISTURISE – As we get older our skin gradually loses its natural moisturiser. This is exasperated by cold weather and central heating.

Apply a good quality moisturiser after bathing or showering – we recommend one containing Urea (the body’s natural moisturiser).

5. FOOTWEAR - Finally, footwear should fit well and adequately support the foot and arch. In fact, it is known that up to 70% of foot problems are caused by ill-fitting shoes - so the investment in wellfitting shoes will pay off later on! It is also of note that although slippers may feel wonderfully comfortable, they rarely offer the best support or safety and can in fact prove to be a trip hazard – do try instead to wear comfortable well fitted shoes.

6. Additional problems like a painful corn, thick or fungal nails or perhaps a persistent verruca may require further attention by a qualified foot professional.

Lions and Burlesque Hampshirebased Alice AustinGrant can often be found stuffing a lion... Don't panic, not a real lion! No, her chickens would be very unhappy if there was a lion sharing their garden; they're already upset enough about the neighbour’s cat! Unsuspecting Twitter users must wonder what they have stumbled upon when they read Alice's profile. She tweets regularly, not only about stuffing lions, but also about singing rainbows and, most suspicious of all, quiet toddlers!

That is because 31 year old Alice, mum to 2 year old Max and 9 month old Loki, is the proud owner of handmade baby-goods business Coconut and Chocolate. After the birth of Max in 2010, Alice was frustrated by the lack of commercially available playmats which met her needs. Most were functional, some were even fun! But none of them were fun, functional AND funky! So Alice, who had previously perfected her Alice Austin-Grant

sewing skills by crafting beautiful burlesque costumes in her spare time, decided to put her needle and thread to a different use.

Inspired by her love of vintage, Alice set about creating the perfect playmat for her son.

Though she didn't know it at the time, this was to be the start of an exciting new venture for Alice. Alice's mummy friends all fell instantly in love with her son's playmat and before she knew it, Alice was back behind her sewing machine making beautiful bespoke personalised playmats for her friends' children. Following the birth of her second son Loki in 2012, word spread even further about Alice's gorgeous playmats.

Coconut and Chocolate was born! Uniquely personalised for the individual child and handmade with love, they are now in high demand up and down the UK, even being posted out to Europe.

So much so, in fact, that Alice has had to employ an assistant and she now has a waiting list. But Alice's clients don't mind that,

because they know that a Coconut and Chocolate mat is most certainly worth waiting for! Alice is quite rightly very proud of what she has achieved and her business is set to go from strength to strength in 2013 with an expansion to her product range in the pipeline.
