A Marathon Challenge by Peter Alton

On the 8/8/2008 I lost my Mum to Breast Cancer. She was a very special lady and someone who shaped my life and gave up so much just so that I could have a happy childhood. I was determined to do something in memory of my Mum. I decided to run for charity, something that for a 47 year old sedentary office worker was quite frankly frightening. I am and have never been a runner and so running even a short distance was going to be exceptionally hard. I decided to run 25 marathons over two years something which has proved to be incredibly tough. I am a very slow

runner and despite many miles of training I am frequently the last runner to cross the line. I am very proud to say that to date I have run and completed 13 of my 25 scheduled marathons. The journey has been exhausting both physically and mentally and I am only just past the halfway mark. I have run in places as far apart as Portsmouth, Wales and Edinburgh meeting many great friends along the way. I have received so many messages of support from people affected by Cancer and these keep me focused on my goal. My aches have been many but luckily I have kept going with my

£3.4 million project to build Respite Care Centre in Cowplain Smile Support & Care’s vision of creating a short break centre is fast becoming a reality. The centre, which will be built in Cowplain, Waterlooville, will be complimentary to the wonderful work already carried out on a daily basis by Smile’s dedicated staff in the community. Smile provides essential respite care to children and young adults with disabilities across Hampshire and West Sussex. Services range from enabling a family to do the weekly shop without the stress of managing a disabled child, to round the clock care involving drug administration, tube feeding and intensive physiotherapy. The new short-break centre is being built in response to the findings of externally commissioned market research which demonstrated a real need for this type of facility. It will be purpose-built to accommodate two family apartments plus eight specially equipped bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, where children and young adults with severe disabilities can stay

either with their families or personal assistant. All rooms will be specially adapted to provide the highest specification fixtures and fittings appropriate to the needs of the occupants, whilst retaining a hotel-like ambience. Fundraising is underway for the £3.4m project, and Smile has already purchased the land and gained full planning permission for the build. The charity is now urging local people, schools, businesses and groups to get behind the appeal to help make the centre a reality for local families.
