WELCOME TO THE FIRST EDITION OF YOUR EXCITING NEW FREE COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER The purpose of establishing these newspapers is fundraising. PO7 & PO8 and its sister paper, PO9, will help build a fund in the Havant Community Chest* for charities in PO7, PO8, PO9, PO10 and PO11.

There will be another five issues of PO7 & PO8 in 2013 and with your help many years beyond!

Each issue of PO7 & PO8 will have a distribution of over 25,000 Launch earlier this year of our sister newspaper PO9 copies…some delivered through letterboxes and others available in static locations like supermarkets, local venues and business parks across the area.

Already we have written about many wonderful people in this area but tell us more! We want to pack each edition with stories of interest to everyone, all ages and all interests. As these newspapers aim to build a fund in the Havant Community Chest we are keeping our costs down. We don’t have reporters so, literally, our readers are our reporters!

So send us your stories, get your name in print, take part in the competitions, let us know what is happening in PO7 & PO8. Tell us about all the great people working to make this community better for those young in years and young at heart! Waterlooville Community Forum The Waterlooville Community Forum has been set up to take a stand against the economic downturn and to start planning and building for the future. It replaces two Community Boards that covered the 5 wards of Waterlooville, with key representatives of the community including the Waterlooville Business Association, local Resident and Community Associations, church groups, local Councillors from Havant, East Hants, Winchester and Hampshire and more.

Its mission is to work with local communities to regenerate Waterlooville and bring about positive changes to their areas by supporting both Business and Community Planning groups and has already helped local traders threatened by parking and access issues. It has also received some 150 replies to a survey which will be used to focus on identified local needs and act as a springboard for further consultation and action.

Forest of Bere Bowmen By: Gill Merrett, FOBB secretary

Forest of Bere Bowmen recently held their Annual Championships. This photograph shows the prize-winners who range in age from teenagers to 70 and 80 year olds. Our club is a target archery club and has been going for 38 years. Members shoot re-curve bows, as seen in the Olympics, compound bows as used in the Paralympics and Commonwealth Games, and also longbows.

Every Sunday there is a club meeting at the archery range in Horndean; however the field is available to members every day throughout the year. The club has other events, which take place, both at the archery field and at an indoor range at Havant. On the first Sunday in November Forest of Bere Bowmen, organises a large indoor shoot at The Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth which is popular with archers from many different clubs.

The club has run four beginners classes this year, the final one starting this month, but will have both an Open Day and more classes next year. Anybody wishing to find out more about Forest of Bere Bowmen can look at the club’s web-site:

Waterlooville U3A has been up and running since 2006 - U3A stands for the University of The Third Age. U3A is a self help organisation for people no longer in full time employment providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment.

Waterlooville U3A hold their monthly meetings in The Sacred Heart Parish Centre, London Road, Waterlooville, PO7 7SR on the fourth Wednesday of every month when there is a talk.

Denmead Theatre Royals

I believe that youth theatres are important. Not only are they of real benefit to those who participate, helping young people to develop confidence and skills which will benefit them their whole lives, but they can also help to bind communities together.

Helping young people and communities are among the cornerstones of the Theatre Royal Winchester’s rural youth theatres programme. Over the past year our involvement in areas such as Denmead has seen group numbers more than double, leading to young people working directly with emerging artists in the theatrical industry and creating shows which use puppetry, slapstick comedy, poetic verse and new writings ready for performances at the Theatre Royal.

Shows such as “A short history of Denmead” link the youth directly with the history of their village, informing them on the richness of the area and showing them the fun found in History. It has also allowed the linking of many parts of the community in its research, linking young with old and theatre with research, youth theatres can bring all kinds of people together.

Working with theatre professionals and emerging artists also allows young members to grow into their skills and older members to take real pride in the high quality and informed work which they choose to create.

I believe Youth Theatres are important, they can bring people together and help young people to take pride in themselves and their community. Will You or Won’t You? Q: My wife keeps nagging me that we need to get Wills sorted out and says that there will be lots of problems if we don’t have them. I don’t want to arrange our Wills because I don’t like talking about it. I’ve also told her that there is no problem as we are married, everything will just go to each other anyway.

Can you please assure her that there is nothing to worry about?

A: Your wife is right, there could be many problems if you do not have Wills created, but also, not everything will not automatically pass to each other just because you are married.

It is a common belief that married couples or civil partners will automatically inherit everything from each other, but this is just not the case. Under English Law, if you die without a Will (this is called dying Intestate) there are strict rules regarding who is entitled to what.

So on top of coping with the death of a loved one, you can also be left with a whole host of

problems, such as being left without enough money to live on or even in some cases being forced to have to sell the family home.

At the very least you should draw up a basic Will to make it clear what you both want to have happen when you die. I have helped many people in drawing up their Wills over the years and I do understand that for many of them it can be an uncomfortable and even distressing conversation, but trust me when I say that it is better done now. I have also had to advise people who are terminally ill and I guarantee you that the conversation is far worse then.

I would also strongly recommend that you do this very important job properly; after all, if you are going to bite the bullet and do it, then surely you should do it properly. I have seen hundreds of Wills over the last 12 years and vary rarely do they reflect what the client really wants to have happen. As someone once said to me, “The trouble is, you don’t know what it is that you don’t know”.

The most common basic Will for a typical family is to leave everything to each other and then onto the children when both parents are gone, or some other variation of this type, which to be frank in my professional opinion is a disaster waiting to happen. I see this time and time again and it rarely makes any difference if it is a DIY Will, or drawn up by a Will Writer or Solicitor. The best way to make sure you really have what you want and that you make well informed decisions is to see a professional that will first create a full Estate

Plan for you and then discuss with you all the options as well as benefits and possible problems, so that you are then in the position to make a well informed choice.

If they can’t provide a full Estate Plan first, then I would recommend you seek advice from one that can.

Gales in Basingstoke?

COMMUNITY CENTRE’S MAKEOVER THANKS TO AWARDS FOR ALL Denmead Community Centre in Denmead, Waterlooville, has unveiled a bright summer makeover, thanks to a grant donation from the Big Lottery Fund (Awards for All).

The centre, which occupies the Old School on School Lane, was built in the 1874 and its main foyer carpet desperately wanted replacing to reinforce its status as a landmark facility in the village. The centre wanted a clean new look to cater for the over 35 different clubs and societies which are hosted at the Centres, including a dancing, singing and its very own Bridge Club.

This grant scheme aims to help improve local communities and the lives of people most in need by improving rural and urban environments and giving communities better facilities to access and enjoy.

Bob Bainbridge the Manager said: “The centre’s foyer was long overdue a makeover, the carpet has not been replaced in living memory. The recent start to the redevelopment of the Gales Brewery site in Horndean had me wondering where all the artefacts were that told some of the history of the place. I did some research by asking around, getting in touch with Hampshire County Council (HCC) Museums Service and Fullers, the company that purchased Gales in 2005.

HCC sent me a lot of photographs, taken just after the Brewery closed in 2006.

Fullers do have a few historical items at their Chiswick HQ, such as an old bottling machine and several old bottles. Most interestingly, I learned that there are several displays of Gales memorabilia at the fascinating Milestones Museum in Basingstoke www.hants.gov.uk/milestones In August, local artist and photographer, Garrick Palmer, and I spent several hours inside this vast hangar-like structure, photographing these displays. The most photogenic is a 1927 Gales delivery truck now fully restored and in working condition with an MOT. It is the only known vehicle of its kind in the UK. Another principal exhibit is a working Gales pub (run by Fullers). While there, resting from our exertions, Garrick and I were caught up in a WWII sing-along at the piano with a WI group from Essex. (To recover from this surreal moment, we were obliged to partake of an excellent pub lunch at the Purefoy Arms www.thepurefoyarms.co.uk in Preston Candover on the way home.)

Breaking Away

It's great to spend an evening with friends.

At Breakaway Quilters we enjoy each other's company, are fascinated by each other's work and relax together once a week with our various projects. Some members work slowly, some produce masses of quilts through the year. Some like machine quilting, some work by hand. Our members include complete beginners, experienced quilters and all stages in between, from younger mums to those with more leisure time. We work on projects as diverse as traditional and modern bed quilts, textile pictures, contemporary pieces and other small items. There is only one rule - and that is that there are no rules at all! Just a creative space in the week to enjoy our craft and learn from each other.

Works by Local Author Gunvor Johansson Local author Gunvor Johansson has published two children’s ebooks. The books are under-water fantasies, but also carry a message about the importance of saving our oceans from pollution.

Need some inspiration? The story below is a new spin on an old classic created by a student on an Adult Literacy course at South Downs College.

Farmer’s wife charged with animal cruelty Amelia Baker, 37, has appeared in court today after being charged with animal cruelty.

Amelia Baker of Dairylane Farm has appeared in court today with a charge of severe cruelty to animals.

The animals in question were innocently walking through the farm kitchen when they were viciously attacked with a carving knife.

“We didn’t know where we were” said one of the mice. “We lost our bearings; we were on the bus home and counted our stops as usual. We must have miss-counted.

The next thing we know our tails are missing.”

The three mice in question were blind and obliviously didn’t know where they were or what danger they had put themselves in.

All Mrs Baker was reported to have said was that the mice had given her quite a shock as she hadn’t been expecting them to be there. In court she was reported to have explained, “I grabbed the knife on the table and just threw it at them. It was the first thing I could lay my hands on. It was such a shock you see.”

Later the jury heard from Farmer Baker who admitted that Mrs Baker was petrified of mice and always had been for as long as he could remember.

Mrs Amelia Baker was sentenced to five years in prison for intentionally causing harm toward the three blind mice.

Although this is a very tragic story there is a happy ending. The three blind mice have been given special transport so this never happens to them again.

Local author Lorna Howarth has published an historical novel, Dearest Maude, set in our area in World War One. The story begins in Portsmouth and Southsea, before moving to The Royal Victoria Military Hospital at Netley. It is a love story – though not a romance, Lorna insists.

Lorna’s inspiration came from the fact that her grandfather was a soldier in the Great War. ‘He died before I was born,’ she explains, ‘but his presence was always felt in our family. He was one of the lucky ones who made it home from the trenches, but he eventually died of tuberculosis, which the doctors attributed to the terrible conditions the soldiers had had to endure.’

‘I’ve loved doing the research for the book,’ she continues, ‘and have even had a field trip to Ypres, which was very powerful.’

Lorna is an established short story writer, and although this is her first novel, she hopes it will be the first of many. She is a member of ‘The Havant and District Writers’ Circle at www.havantwriters.co.uk

Excerpt from ‘Dearest Maude’ The train’s already in, and soon the shadows of the station are sliding away, transforming into the backs of sunlit offices and shops. As the train gradually picks up speed, the buildings slip by faster and faster, rushing past the way the water does in the millstream at home. I lean back against the hard slats of the carriage seat.

What would Hubert think of my family? Would he mind Mother and her sharp ways, her big, red hands? Or Dad’s mill clothes, patched everywhere, and grey where the flour’s worked itself into the weave? And would he expect china cups? He’d be disappointed if he did! Dad’d have more than a bit to say about him, I’m sure, for he’d know straight away that Hubert wasn’t one of us, what with his nice clothes and his manners and all. And that’s not counting his voice, neither. If there’s one thing Dad can’t abide, it’s a posh voice like Hubert’s. I sigh. Oh, yes, there’d be plenty said, all right.

The sun falls through the window and I close my eyes, let hedges and trees flicker their shadows across me. I turn my face to feel the warmth of the sun through the glass and imagine I’m walking up the path and round the back of the cottage.

There’s washing boiling in the copper, as there always is, and I stop to breathe in the smell of it. Mother’s there, of course, and I give her a kiss then introduce him, say something like ‘This is Hubert, Mother, as I’ve told you about,’ though I haven’t yet, of course. I cross to the living room and take off my hat. Then I show Hubert our Arthur ‘s photograph and say would he like to go up to the churchyard after dinner and see Horace’s grave, for I never like to leave our Horace out, even now. A pot’s simmering on the range, rabbit I expect if Tom’s been up, and I do the potatoes and make a cup of tea, persuade Mother to sit with us for a few minutes by the range. I don’t suppose Hubert’s ever eaten rabbit stew. He’d be more used to lamb cutlets and Dover sole, I should have thought. I make him take Dad’s chair and I sit back at the table and mind my p’s and q’s, don’t take off my boots as I usually do to push my feet into the bright rag rug by the stove. That rug’s got all the shades of red you could imagine. There’s even some from one of Horace’s little shirts. Them bits are my favourites, though I never, ever, tread on them. I can’t. I know every part of that rug, for didn’t I help Mother make it after Horace died, to keep her mind off things? We used bits from old cast offs, and cuts Mrs Lawson gave me to take home from the ends of the rolls.

Took us all winter, it did.

The train hoots like a banshee and I open my eyes with a start, feel myself pushing gently forwards as the train begins to brake. The wheels squeal against the track as we slide slowly towards our little village station.

‘Mornin’, Miss Timms.’ The stationmaster acknowledges me with a nod, lifts his fingers towards his cap in that half-hearted gesture of his before striding past me down the platform. Whenever I see him, I can’t help but remember the time he set his dog on me and Arthur, just for taking a couple of apples from his precious tree. I’ve never forgiven him, and I’ve often been tempted to show I’ve still got the scars, except it would mean lifting my petticoats which wouldn’t be seemly.

‘Mr Coggins,’ I say curtly and nod at his retreating back, then glance towards the ticket office where I hope to see Walter.

Local Artist voted “Visitors’ Favourite” Lynne Davies, a talented local artist, wins the ‘Derek Davis prize’ at the recent Arundel Gallery trail. The event held in August attracts some 10,000 visitors a year, with over 100 artists in 60 different venues.

“I was delighted to have won the ‘Derek Davis prize’ which is so special because it’s chosen by the thousands of visitors to the event” Lynne commented. “There were so many wonderful artists to choose from, I was delighted that people voted for my work.”

Lynne was presented with an engraved plaque by the grandchildren of Derek Davis, one of the founders of the Arundel gallery trail.

A self-taught artist, Lynne began her career at the age of 12 when she was commissioned to complete a portrait…she didn’t look back! She describes herself as a hopeless romantic and feels that her paintings reflect this, with a diverse style and a passion for telling a story in paint.

As a finalist in the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year in 2010 and 2011, and with many other awards to her name, Lynne’s original paintings are now becoming highly sought after. More examples of her work are available to view on her website www.lynnedavies.com

Hair we go again!

Staff at the Review Salon Group are enjoying a hair-raisingly exciting time – for they are through to the regional finals of a prestigious UK award scheme - the National Training Awards 2012.

The news comes just weeks after the Salon Group – that has a salon in London Road, Waterlooville – heard that it was selected as a finalist in the National Hairdressing Business Awards, promoted by the magazine Hairdressers Journal and sponsored by Schwarzkopf.

Staff at Review have been shortlisted as a South Central Finalist in the small employer category in the highly respected NTA that are sponsored by City & Guilds.

Next month Review staff will be joining judges and organisers at a ‘special gathering of recognition’ to mark their in-house training achievements.

The NTA choose ‘the best of the best’ from across all business sectors in the UK so Review will be competing against other businesses in all lines of work.

HOPE... Adding life to your years Horndean Community Association at Merchistoun Hall has launched a new forum to give a voice and support to its 2000 residents aged 65 and over The HOPE (Horndean Older People) Forum has developed as a result of the Horndean Parish Community Plan requiring information on the needs of older people within the Parish of Horndean. The Parish comprises the villages of Horndean, Catherington, Blendworth & part of Lovedean.

Two public meetings have been held by HOPE and a number of needs have been discovered: Transport, social meeting places, lunch clubs, and information on services and facilities. Communication is the biggest issue - how to get valuable information to the most vulnerable. The HOPE Forum is focussing on these areas of work for the future.

What happens late at night and a hospital needs blood for an urgent operation? In many cases, they simply called a taxi. This cost the hospital thousands of pounds a year, money that could be better spent on patient services.

In our area, there is a group of volunteers from SERV Wessex, the regional branch of the blood bike charity. Covering Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire and run by volunteers they give up their time overnight and at weekends to provide a vital free service to hospitals, including the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth. Because they operate at night when most people are tucked up in their beds they are somewhat unknown. But this local charity is in need of urgent assistance and needs night time controllers.

As a controller you are the point of contact for the hospital, all you need is a phone and a pc. Upon receiving a call you will dispatch one of the riders to collect and deliver the products required. Potentially helping to save someone’s life. BILLY’S LAKE CONSERVATION

The Acorn Community Centre in Wecock Farm has received £77,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to create the most beautiful outdoor area for all the community to enjoy.

This amazing project was the brain child of a group of teenagers from the Wecock Farm estate. They rushed into their local community centre full of excitement at changing a waste piece of land with a lake on it into a magical hide away where we can all go to escape our flats and houses. One of their great passions was that those who don’t have a car could still go out for the day together.

We will improve access to the land and lake side, enabling workshops to run teaching fish handling to all ages. During the holidays there will be many work shops for young people including species identification and bird and bat box construction. We will learn about the history of the area and the skills needed to look after the land.

Waterlooville Its 19th Century Origins By: Steve Jones The origin of Waterlooville began with an Act for the Enclosure of the Forest of Bere in 1810. Prior to this the forest covered much of southern Hampshire from Southampton to the West Sussex boundary. By the beginning of the 19th century there were about 16,000 acres of forest surviving, including much which surrounded the road from Horndean to Purbrook. After the Enclosure Act part of the forest, close to what we now know as the crossroads, was sold off in allotments and by 1815 there were five buildings close by.

Legend has it that Waterlooville was named after the inn that stood on the northeastern quadrant of the crossroads (now Nat West Bank), then known as Wheat (Wait) Lane End. The Waterloo Inn or Heroes of Waterloo was so named because it is alleged that soldiers returning from the battle, after disembarking at Portsmouth, stopped at the inn.

The inn was named in their honour and subsequently the name Waterloo and later Waterlooville became associated with the development occurring in the vicinity of the crossroads, the road from London to Portsmouth and the forest road which ran from Hambledon towards the hamlet of Stakes.

WATERLOOVILLE BOTTLE

The Industrial Revolution and the coming of railways opened up travel to working people rather than the wealthy and in particular it led to the growth of English seaside resorts like Blackpool, Southend-on -Sea and Brighton.

William Henry Goss owner of the Falcon Foundry in Stoke and his sons are credited with the idea of making souvenir ware bearing crests and names of seaside resorts in the late 19th Century. Originally they would source a item relevant to an area and this item would only be sold in that local area but this principle was soon dropped as working people could not afford to travel throughout England to collect their favourite crests.

The Goss Waterlooville Bottle is a model of a water bottle used at the Battle of Waterloo. It is not a proper issue British Army item but was acquired privately by a soldier - the standard issue bottle was cylindrical in shape. The bottle modelled above was left by a soldier who camped on open fields close-by the then unnamed hotel. When it was suggested that the hotel should be named "The Heroes of Waterloo" the name of the town was born. The suffix "ville" was added on petition of the residents because so many goods and letters were going astray to Waterloo in Lancashire and Waterloo; a suburb in London.

However healthy we are, there is usually room for improvement. Many of us have health complaints, carry too much weight, suffer joint and back pain and ever increasingly feel low mood or depression. The Rowans Hospice is once again holding a night-time walk for children in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard during half-term week.The Children’s Moonlit Memories Meander takes place on Thursday 1st November, starting at 6.30pm, and will be the third annual sponsored walk especially for children. Organisers are hoping to top last year’s event when more than 500 children plus accompanying adults walked 1.5 miles or 3 miles to raise money for The Rowans Hospice.

The route takes participants into secret areas of the Naval Base not usually open to the public and past HMS Victory which will look spectacular lit up at night. All children aged 0-16 years are welcome to take part in the Moonlit Memories Meander, accompanied by an adult. The Meander offers children the opportunity to remember someone who has died and they are invited to make and decorate a star to bring along on the night which will be displayed in the Dockyard. St Ann’s Church will also be open for anyone who would like to light a candle in memory of someone special.

So far the event has raised nearly £40,000 providing vital services for people with life-limiting illnesses, their carers and families. One of the services provided by The Rowans Hospice is the Rowan’s Meerkat Service, which involves working with children who either have a significant adult with a life-limiting illness or who have been bereaved. The service offers advice, liaison with schools and other agencies, and one-to-one support where appropriate.

Hannah Wilding, Events Fundraiser for The Rowans Hospice, said: “This will be a magical evening with a fantastic atmosphere with music, entertainment and a warm-up before the start of the walk, marshals to cheer and support everyone en route, and a medal and meal on completion for each child.”

is a fitness class for people with varied disabilities run by Floyd Foster a highly experienced and empathetic class Instructor. Having started as a class for amputees, the class now includes people with medical conditions such as MS and other conditions that encounter balance and co-ordination difficulties.

The session is broken into two parts, with the first focusing on seated co-ordination, strength and power exercises, using equipment such as medicine balls and resistance bands. Then the latter part of the session consists of leg strengthening and balance exercises, using parallel bars and chairs to aid the activities.

The class aims to provide an enjoyable, lively and fun session which benefits all those who attend. It is a light hearted with many laughs along the way. Everyone who attends and feels encouraged to participate in what can only be described as a supported, caring and warm environment which helps to motivate each individual within the session.

Each session comes to a close with a light competition which can include activities such as goal scoring or target throwing games, which helps to build self-esteem and confidence.

The class has promoted social interaction amongst its members, and most stay behind afterwards to share coffee and conversation. Alice and Friends in her Secret World

Sequel to ‘The Water People’s Secret’ Alice has befriended a tiny girl, half-human, half-fish, who comes from the Water People’s colourful world, where Alice and the girl; Princess Zina have many exciting underwater adventures.

Clanfield is a semi-rural community. It is bounded on three sides by countryside, and by the South Downs National Park (SDNP). It's easy to think that it has always been this way, and will always stay this way…but the world is a changing place.

Historically Clanfield started in 1305 as a small farming community centred on the Church of St. James. The present church was rebuilt in 1875 and both bells, the font and much of the stone for the west window came from the original church. It appears that little changed for many years and in 1929 the population was recorded as 129. However, during the Second World War people started to move to the village to escape the bombing in Portsmouth and by the late 1940’s the population had grown to 500.

Steady development has continued over the years and Clanfield now extends beyond the original centre based around the Church of St James , the cottages, the Wellhead, village pond and Memorial Hall, to the Drft Road shops. Here are just a few of the local businesses in the area.

Natalie March – Olympic Physio - A bit about me!

My name is Natalie March from Physio-logical and I have had a really exciting year - I was selected to join the team of physiotherapists supporting the Olympic Games!

I am a fully qualified chartered physiotherapist and acupuncturist with over 9 years experience graduating from Brunel University in 2003. I decided to do a physiotherapy degree as I always enjoyed sport at school and my sister is a physiotherapist so she recommended physio to me.

The Olympic selection process was a very stringent one…nerve wracking! There were over 18,000 people applying for 4,000 medical positions. I was judged on a range of skills – communication skills as well as physio knowledge and techniques.

My role at the Olympics was to treat elite sailors and windsurfers from around the world including a gold medallist sailor, also medal finalists from China, France, Greece, Spain, Italy, Ukraine to name a few. One of them was kind enough to say…

“I would like to express my greatest thanks for the job you've done with all my "troubles", I am amazed with your knowledge, experience and speed in reducing sport injuries and dysfunctions!”

It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and experience. The way the many different nationalities got on with each other was wonderful. All the athletes and people I worked with were extremely friendly and good fun to be with.

The Olympics is over and I’m back home now and looking forward to helping patients recover from any sports injuries, aches or pains. I can’t promise any medals but will help you get back to your peak fitness levels.

An Olympic Experience

As a Physical Education teacher, and at the time of the bid I was a School Sports Coordinator, being part of London 2012 was something I had wanted to do since GB won the bid back in 2005. I applied to be part of the 'Last Mile Team' the role would be to act as stewards and be the first face of London 2012 as people made their way to and from the Olympic and Paralympic Events this summer. I was selected to be based at Stratford which I was thrilled about of course.

In the months leading up to the Games, I attended various training and workshop sessions and test events to enable me to fulfil the role, and I gained my Level 2 in Stewarding Training.

I took the opportunity to explore the East End of London while I was up there, an area I had not previously been to. On my other days off, I went into the Olympic Park and just soaked up the atmosphere by wandering around. There was so much to see, the landscaping was fabulous, and of course there was the big screen to go and watch events on.

Our role was to welcome people to the Games and help to make their day a memorable experience, one they will remember for a long time. The atmosphere was fantastic, all the visitors joined in the fun on the way into the Park, 'High Fiving' the pink hands, joining in with the chants over the megaphones. Amongst the millions of people we welcomed over both Games, I was thrilled to see several people I knew and had worked with over the years, including some from Horndean!

Being part of London 2012 was a fantastic experience, one I will never forget. I met and worked with some great people who will remain friends. We already have a reunion planned for next summer at Stratford. ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Nicole Robinson wowed judges at the Professional Beauty National student Make-Up Competition earlier this year with her interpretation of pop icon Christina Aguilera.

Nicole, who was studying BTEC Level 3 Production Arts (Make-up) at South Downs College, designed the hair and make-up for her model and created the outfit to complete the look. She chose pop icon Christina Aguilera as her inspiration and focused on the “Fighter” video as she loved the concept of the video with the transformation from black moth covered in needles to white moth.

Nicole explained, “I was completely amazed by the make-up in the show and felt that I had underestimated the fellow competitors! I couldn’t believe it when I won my category and best in show. I really have to say a massive thanks to my model, Claire O’Kennedy, as she kept me calm throughout and really put me at ease.”

Nicole was supported on the day by staff and students from the Hair and Beauty department at South Downs College who also looked around the trade show, learning about the new techniques and equipment that will soon be on the beauty market. Special guests at the show included Katie Price and stars of ‘The Only Way is Essex’.

Nicole has now completed her course, achieving a Merit, and is developing her career as a Freelance Make-up Artist and model. She has already been working for three years as a make-up artist for a local photographer. Lecturer at South Downs College, Sally Brooks, has no doubt that Nicole will continue to do well, “her designs and work were fantastic and the awards are very well deserved. ‘BEREWOOD’S BACKGROUND’ Berewood takes its name from the legendary Forest of Bere, once a Royal Medieval Forest, used by the king and noblemen for hunting in the 11th century. Maintaining the heritage of the area is high on Grainger’s list of priorities, and it has chosen this name for the site in in recognition of its history, and to preserve the local legacy for the future.

Striking a balance between preserving the past whilst also providing for the future has been of paramount importance when creating Berewood. This has meant that careful planning has gone into ensuring that the scheme will integrate well with the community. This commitment has been evident in the way in which Grainger has consulted with both councils and Waterlooville residents extensively throughout the five year planning process.

For example, during the first stage of consultation, the first house frontages that were proposed were considered too contemporary by local residents, so Grainger decided that they needed to be redesigned. Grainger commissioned new architects ADAM Architecture to redesign the houses, and the new designs were well received by local residents, and have received positive comments, with the new, more traditional designs, praised extensively (see ADAM Architecture images). Similarly, when the original plan for 1,550 homes was deemed insufficient by Winchester City Council and Havant Borough Council, due to the huge demand for new housing in the area, Grainger revised its master-plan and pledged to deliver 1,000 additional homes, and further community amenities (see site plans). Chairman sees local community work on VIP visit

Key board members of Barratt Developments recently visited David Wilson Homes sites in the region, reinforcing the importance of the five star house-builder which is part of the Barratt Group.

Chairman Bob Lawson and group planning and strategic land director Roy Donson visited Purbrook Place in Purbrook and Windmill View in Clanfield to see the newly launched developments and meet key members of the team and wider community.

“We were delighted to host our VIP guests to mark the launch of these two important new developments,’’ said David Wilson Homes managing director Ian Wallace. “We have worked closely with the community and the board members were hugely impressed with how things are now taking shape.’’

VIPs at the regional visit included 14 year old Katherine Colley who is a pupil at Purbrook Park School and who recently completed work experience with the five star house-builder.

Local teenager selected for award winning Academy training programme

Waterlooville resident Ben Gibbon is celebrating the start of a new career after securing an apprenticeship on the award winning Academy programme with Barratt Group.

Ben was chosen from of a total of 42 applicants and is due to begin the course at the end of August, where he will be working on site at the new David Wilson Homes development in Purbrook.

During the two year plumbing apprenticeship, Ben will take part in a college course while also receiving professional training and supervised development, working towards an industry recognised qualification. At the end of the course there is an option to extend the apprenticeship.

Thanks to its Academy scheme, Barratt Group, the parent company of Barratt and David Wilson Homes is able to support its apprentices in developing a broad range of skills, while being supported by professionals already working in construction roles on site.

Combining professional training, both on site and in the classroom, with industry recognised qualifications, the Academy aims to deliver craft and trade specialists, site managers and people with specialist technical and commercial knowledge.

As well as the practical subjects covered as a plumbing apprentice, Ben will also learn about project management and customer service, which means that by the end of his apprenticeship he will have received an enhanced level of training ready to

put into practice.

Community liaison manager Anthony Dimmick said, “I am delighted that Ben will be joining the Academy programme, and I think he’ll find the experience he gains in the next few years invaluable. The top five per cent of apprentices who complete the Academy programme are offered site management positions, which is testament to the level of expertise developed during the course.

“I think for Ben to be able to carry out his apprenticeship in his local area is fantastic – he can develop his own future while also developing the future of the local community.”

Ben Gibbon said, “I’m so pleased to be have been chosen – Barratt Group has a great reputation and I’m really looking forward to starting my apprenticeship. I live in the local area and plumbing is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time so this is perfect for me.”

Local schoolgirl lays foundations for career in construction Barratt has been helping one local schoolgirl get ahead in the jobs world, long before she even leaves school.

Fourteen year old Katherine Colley already has her career mapped out – the Purbrook Park schoolgirl wants to work in construction and has completed work experience with the region’s leading housebuilder.

Katherine has just finished a two week work experience programme with Barratt, which has reinforced her aim to work in construction.

Katherine is determined to become a carpenter and has completed her Construction Skills Test, the entry requirement for an apprenticeship.

Katherine has been sampling life on Barratt construction sites in Hampshire as well as behind the scenes in the developer’s local headquarters.

Katherine said her interest in becoming a carpenter dates back to year seven at school.

“I’ve also always enjoyed helping my dad on projects such as building a shed and decking,’’ said Katherine.

With the two weeks now complete Katherine said, “I really enjoyed my work experience and found it very useful. I spent time with lots of different teams which gave me the chance to see how different areas of the business work.

My favourite part was a trip to see a development on the Isle of Wight, where some homes were already

completed and some were still being built, so I got a good insight into the different stages of construction.
