FIREFIGHTERS GARDEN PATIO Postcode Publications is supporting a community project to create a Wellness Garden at Havant Fire Station for the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service. the garden includes the patio area for small events during fire crews down time while waiting to go into action when duty calls.there will also be a loggia and seating for crews to relax there, particularly following arduous fire and rescue tasks that deserve time for calm reflection.

MHA finds new ways to raise funds mha live at home, based in havant would, at this time of year, be nearly half way through the outings programme, be in full swing with their social activity groups and be looking forward to the summer holiday planned for July. this, together with the plethora of fundraising events scheduled, makes for a busy year for the volunteers and older people who make up their members. now, they are no less busy organising shopping, prescription collection, welfare and befriending telephone calls, producing and delivering newsletters, Jigsaw/dvd/audio book lending library, pen pal scheme and a weekly programme of telephone and online activities. however, the cancellation of fundraising activities due to the coronavirus, has meant that they, their volunteers and supporters have come up with novel ways to raise funds. staff and volunteers have set up Birthday fundraising challenges on fB, asking for donations instead of presents, raising an average of £230 per person. two young practicing creatives haydn and yoli and supporters of mha, are taking part in the nationwide 2.6 challenge, which was set up to support charities across the uk that

would have received funds raised at the london marathon this year (hence 2.6/26, as the marathon is 26 miles!) but have sadly lost these donations due to covid-19. they have set themselves the challenge of doing 26 artworks over 26 days, each piece, size 13cm square, taking 26mins (often much longer!) to create on quality cartridge paper. the aim was to enable people to help them raise funds in two ways. they could sponsor their project by making a donation on their Just giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/haydns26-artworks-in-26-days-26-challenge or / and they will have the opportunity to buy the artworks by placing bids on them on the 26 artworks facebook page. at the end of 26 days, people who bid the highest amount for each artwork won the chance to buy the artwork for the bid amount. the artworks were then sent by post to the winners. “older people are now more than ever likely to suffer the debilitating effects of isolation, which is why it is vital that we support charities such as this so that they are able to reach out and continue providing much needed support.” said haydn and yoli. mha continue to take referrals of older people need. please contact them if you know of someone who needs help or you wish to make a donation or fundraise for their organisation. contact by tel: 023 9247 1313 or by email: portsmouthandhavant.liveathome@mha.org.uk

Eat Out to Help Out to boost our local economy after a difficult few months i hope readers are now starting to enjoy the summer, while adhering to the government’s guidance as we come out of lockdown. some of the hardest hit businesses during lockdown were restaurants, pubs and cafes, so i was pleased to see so many taking advantage of the eat out to help out scheme. in recent weeks, i’ve been visiting some of these as they reopen, including Boswells café in the meridian centre, driftwood in emsworth and tanya’s kitchen in leigh park. over twenty businesses in the constituency have signed-up so far. if you visit on mondays, tuesdays and wednesdays in august you’ll receive a half price meal up to the value of £10. to help you find businesses that have signed-up, the government has launched a restaurant finder which you can visit at https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/eat-out-tohelp-out/find-a-restaurant/ eat out to help out is just one of many government schemes that are helping both businesses and people in the constituency. in total across the havant constituency, 12,100 people have had their job protected through the Job retention scheme, selfemployed people have accessed £13.7million worth of government grants, and £11.5 million worth of grants has been handed out to businesses in the havant constituency, which do not need to be paid back. these have all been lifelines and will be vital in helping our local economy bounce back stronger than before. last month, there was also success for my emsworth library campaign in partnership with the local community and councillors as

hampshire county council (hcc) confirmed that the library will not close. it comes after a consultation by the hcc, where they earmarked emsworth library as one of 10 around the county for complete closure. that was due to the high rent of the building in the town centre currently used to house the library previously agreed by hcc.

Gardening Article from the Hayling Island Horticultural Society

as we continue to enjoy our late summer flowers and the bountiful produce from our gardens, our minds will start to turn to the autumn and winter months ahead and to the jobs we need to do to prepare our gardens and allotments. shorter and colder days do not mean we need to spend less time in the garden and indeed, many have learned the pleasures of spending more time outside during these last difficult six months. even half an hour of fresh air and maybe even sunshine can lift our spirits and improve our physical and mental well-being. so here are some jobs you can do as autumn progresses. it is always a good idea to take stock of your garden during the summer and see what plants do well. collecting seeds and taking cuttings from your perennials and hardy annuals, ensures an ongoing supply of new plants next year for little cost.

salvias are very popular at the moment and they are excellent to take cuttings from to overwinter, ready to plant out next year. seeds can be collected and stored from poppies, nigella and you may notice new little plants are already growing in your garden ready for next year. seeds are normally ready to collect two months after flowering and have dried off and turned brown. try and collect the seed heads on a dry day and store for a couple of weeks in a bag or a box before shaking off the seeds. once excess plant material has been removed, store in an envelope or a bag in a cool dry place. it is very satisfying to grow your own plants from seeds collected the previous year and there are usually plenty of extra to share with friends and family. spring bulbs can be planted in autumn ready for a wonderful display next year. now is also a good time to divide any herbaceous perennials that have got too large or you just want to spread around the garden. plants moved in autumn will usually survive the experience well and have time to establish a good root system ahead of next year’s growth. dig around the whole plant, and if you cannot separate it with your hands, then cut in half or more with a spade, before replanting in its new position. it doesn’t matter if you sever some of the roots. as leaves fall and plants die

Jobs in the Garden for September and October back, continue to tidy up the garden and put these in your compost but some plants can be left to provide interest in winter such cornus stems and seed heads on thistles etc. you can leave piles of leaves and twigs in discreet corners for wildlife to use over the winter months. move any tender plants such as geraniums and half hardy fuschias into your greenhouse or into a protected area less likely to get frost.we are very lucky that we do not get such severe frosts as other parts of the country. if you keep an eye on the weather, you can leave some less hardy plants in your garden and cover them in the event of severe weather. geraniums are very easy to propogate and indeed they never really become dormant. you can take cuttings at any time and some of them should root successfully. Just take care not to overwater them and they do not need to be covered.. if you do not have a greenhouse, this is an excellent to way to keep your favourite plants for the next year as they will survive well indoors. overwintered plants generally need very little attention. hedges need a good tidy up now, especially if they've been neglected over summer. it's also time to prune your fruit

STANSTED PARK TREE SPONSORSHIP SCHEME

the stansted park charitable foundation is offering the chance to restore its forest, planting thousands of trees to recreate woodland cover, offset emissions and create wildlife habitats. the foundation has reluctantly begun a major felling programme, under licence from the forestry commission because of the ash dieback disease (hymenoscyphus fraxineus) – most of this species at stansted park has some degree of infection

and young trees in particular are either dead or dying. this virulent disease weakens even larger trees, reducing their ability to fight secondary pathogens and making them unstable. this has serious safety implications in areas of public access, or adjacent to roads and buildings. managing them is fraught with danger, meaning landowners are, with heavy hearts, having to fell large numbers of ash trees. this was a last resort for our head forester michael prior, and something he never wanted to do. “ash is one of our most common trees and its widespread loss will have a disastrous effect. the species is vital for biodiversity, with huge numbers of creatures reliant on it for food or habitat. old trees, with numerous cavities, are homes for birds, insects, bats and a myriad of insects and fungi.” “many superb young trees have to be felled and sold at a fraction of their potential value rather than as fine timber in the future.”

WHERE YOU CAN HELP – THE SPONSORSHIP SCHEME the cost of replanting these large areas is huge but a vital part of stansted park’s charitable mission. a mix of native hardwoods will optimise biodiversity and the introduction of new species, able to thrive in our changing climate, will add seasonal colour. new access paths will be created to enhance visitors’ experience. the foundation is hoping individual sponsors will ‘buy a tree’, perhaps as a present for family members or in memory of a loved one. while it won’t be possible to identify your individual tree, you will be able to specify which area and species you’d like and know that you have permanently committed to the restoration of the forest.’ for those who would like to contribute to this wonderful project the suggested cost of sponsorship is £10 per tree, this will guarantee the correct

bemused by it all, to Bedhampton. i sometimes wonder what they made of it all. arriving from war-torn europe and marching along elmleigh road which had not suffered from the effects of bombing. to see local people walking in complete freedom without the slightest idea of what sights, suffering and heartache these displaced people had been through under the nazis and russians.

so havant repair café has teamed up with cycling uk and local cyclists to organise half a dozen free ‘dr Bike’ sessions, where experienced cycle users carry out a twelve point check on each bike, replace any minor parts if needed, make any adjustments necessary, and show the owner how to do simple maintenance themselves. organiser anne sayer said that when storm francis threatened heavy rain and gale force winds, she was tempted to cancel the event but her volunteers all turned up, erected a marquee, and prepared to welcome visitors. five people had booked to get their bikes looked at and the volunteers set to, doing the usual covid safety spray of the bikes first, then spending up to half an hour on each bike checking and tuning the wheels, brakes, steering and gears for condition and safety. after each bike had been adjusted it was double checked before being disinfected again and collected by the owner, together with a brief report on any faults found and corrected and advice on any further work that may be better handled by the local bike shops. one tyre was showing signs that it needed replacement soon, and the owner advised which size to buy. after a couple of hours the rain had faded away but the wind had intensified so

the marquee was packed away and everyone enjoyed working in the fresh air. the team of volunteer mechanics was led by chris cheetham, of portsmouth’s community cycle centre, who also provided the marquee and many of the tools. one of the customers said that it was as though he rode down on a donkey and returned on a rolls royce. a bit of an exaggeration, i think, but the sentiment is fine. anne tells us that she has planned another three sessions, all free, and in havant park opposite the bus station, on saturdays 12th, 19th, and 26th september. any local resident is welcome to bring their bike over for a check up, and maybe some free advice, but it is wise to book a time slot on line by emailing: repaircafehavant@gmail.com

Pen Pal Scheme right at home in havant are excited to announce that the hugely popular pen pal scheme, in partnership with mengham infant school, is soon to be starting again. if we can get enough interest from older persons to participate then the scheme could be extended to include the Junior school. so, what is the pen pal scheme? launched in september 2019 it has proven to be an enormous success, so the scheme is going to restart this september at the beginning of the academic year. the pen pal scheme is such a lovely idea, it gives our clients a sense of joy and happiness when they receive the letters from the children. children aged 5 to 7, with support from their teachers write letters to their pen pals, which are then delivered to the right at home office. these are then distributed to the clients. the clients respond by writing to their

What is sour beer?

You may be a convert to lip puckering sours already or you may be horrified at the thought of one.

Love them or hate them sour beers are seeing a big rise in popularity within the craft beer scene. Sour beers were in fact the first beers made using wild bacteria and before sterilization which has led to beer as we know it today made with specific yeast strains rather than the wild bacteria and yeasts of tart tasting sour’s.

What makes a sour beer sour?

Bacteria give sours their distinctive taste and yeast adds funky and earthy qualities. There are two types of bacteria used and one type of wild yeast in today's sours.

Lactobacillus is a bacteria that turns sugars into lactic acid. Its the same acid that makes yogurt taste slightly sour.

Pediococcus also from the same family of lactobacillus is often used in Belgian beers to add acidity.

Finally the wild yeast in sours is known as Brettanomyees which can be used to add balancing layers of earthiness to the beer.

Sweet Charity charity shopping is not for everyone. some people don’t like the idea of wearing other people’s clothes (especially now) while others just don’t have the energy to trawl through poorly merchandised charity shops. even though i take all of these factors on board, i still love it. during lockdown, many people have been organising their wardrobes and the stock that has hit charity shops is increasing by the day! so, with people organising and being more careful with money, shopping pre-loved is definitely a thing. let’s look at the positives, which in my opinion outweighs the negatives. firstly, you are being more sustainable and helping towards keeping the clothing cogs turning; secondly, you save money;

thirdly, you may find rare pieces that have been discontinued, and last but not least, you are doing your bit for charity which is never a bad thing. here are a few tips and tricks to help make charity shopping a more enjoyable experience: Research the best ones if you want a more streamlined charity shopping experience, look to doing your research before you head out. go on time out, or other sites, that’ll give you a list depending on the location. if you are london based, the pieces you find can depend on the area you go to.

Try before you buy most, if not all, charity shops have changing rooms. i know this sounds obvious, but make sure you try on your selection, as it will be a waste (even if it’s a £3 top) if it doesn’t fit.

Look carefully sometimes items can be in random places within the store, make sure you take your time and keep your eyes open - you never know what you might come across.

Think ... about how items could fit into your existing wardrobe. pretend you are shopping normally and see how you can mix charity shop finds with existing pieces in your wardrobe. remember that charity shops may not hold all sizes, and you may find it hard to find pieces that fit you, if this is the case - check out the accessories or books! charity shops are known for their vast supply of great, used books which are usually about.

Some items are brand new yes! some charity shops have a relationship with big retailers, that if/when a retailer over buys stock, they donate! now, most of the time they have to take out labels, but if you can tell your topshop from your river island, you’ll know. these items are a little bit more expensive than other items, however you’ll still be making a saving and donating to charity. in a nutshell, treat charity shopping like normal shopping and take your time, make decisions (regardless of price), and most importantly, remember proceeds of what you buy go to charity. it’s win win.

two lifeboat crew members dreamt up an idea to create knitted lifeboat crew dolls to sustain morale and were supported by several ladies from the 3 anglican churches Jenny gaffin and Janet denman were planning a photographic exhibition in aid of the rnli and were at st andrews church when they came up with the idea of a knitted doll resembling an rnli lifeboat crew

member. having found a suitable pattern online Jenny approached some of her parishioners and they enthusiastically broke their ‘lockdown boredom’ by busily knitting. meanwhile Janet and Jenny got thinking creatively and Janet customised the first doll as a likeness of one of the crew and created a scene to put ‘him’ in. (see picture of crewmember demonstrating rope handling!) as more dolls arrived more complex scenarios were developed and raised a laugh for the crew on their whatsapp page, helping to bring crew members together. the scenarios were also shared with the lady knitters helping them to cope with the isolation of covid-19 lockdown. Janet who was shielding during the crisis, created the scenes at home or in her garden and said ‘having a house full of little people kept me sane.the way this brought the community together and the joy they brought was amazing.’ for Jenny it bridged her two worlds, the lifeboat station and the churches and she said ‘it’s been somewhat surreal but it was something we could do to raise a laugh and bring people together and it’s shown the richness of community spirit on hayling.’

Cycling in a Lock-down the lock-down due to the coronavirus has been frustrating to cyclists and to the cycling clubs in particular. the government stressed that everybody should continue to keep fit and for that reason we were all allowed out of our homes for daily exercise, provided we were alone or with other members of our own household. for those of us who are used to cycling with groups, this amounted to a bar to club rides. the national body, cycling uk (otherwise known as cycling touring club) issued guidance on group cycling bearing in mind that the whole intention of the regulation was to protect us all from infecting each other by keeping us each safely apart from anyone who may be infected. ctc guidance was that group cycling should effectively cease because the perceived difficulty of keeping two metres apart in a moving group. most regular cyclists ensured that they continued to ride as their daily exercise permitted but riding solo is not the same as with others. in addition, as we all know,

non essential shops were closed so the idea of riding out to a coffee stop destination was impossible. later the regulations were refined and ctc authorised small groups of up to six riders including the leader. portsmouth ctc decided to suspend the system where cyclists gather at a pre determined day and point and break into groups, by organising 'pop-up' rides of, originally, four riders who would take any refreshments needed with them. this was later increased to six. having a small group like this enabled most of the riders to be pretty evenly matched which avoided anyone getting frustrated by having to wait for the less able, or conversely anyone struggling to keep up. meanwhile, some cafes and shops were allowed to serve 'take-away' refreshments and word quickly spread around the club as to which venues could refresh people who were out walking or cycling. this gave us destinations for our rides whether we were cycling alone or with just one other. it sometimes happened that there would be other cyclists standing outside those locations

or sitting on grass verges, so we were able to keep a two metre distance and chat about our rides (which is what cyclists do!) incidentally a typical adult road bike is a bit over five feet long, so a bike length plus about half a wheel diameter is very close to two metres, so normally, of course, cyclists' heads are at least a bike length apart between the riders but at traffic lights and other involuntary stops we have needed to make a special effort not to 'bunch up'. later the rules allowed us to spend longer exercising so we could ride further and the importance of a feed stop increased.

By the end of July the club had conducted 32 pop-up rides to benefit sixty

riders, and of course with smaller groups we have needed extra ride leaders. happily several existing riders have volunteered to lead a small group and our thanks go to them.

following ronnie o'sullivan’s latest victory at the recent snooker world championship at sheffield's crucible theatre, this article looks at snooker and the extent to which it is played locally. ronnie o'sullivan claimed his sixth world championship title with a dominant 18-8 victory over kyren wilson at sheffield's crucible theatre in July. in doing so o’sullivan drew level with ray reardon and his boyhood hero steve davis on the number of world crowns won. in doing so, o’sullivan also surpasses stephen hendry on the all-time list of ranking event wins with a record 37 titles. although wilson battled back to 10-7 in this years championship, o'sullivan wrested total control with a run of eight strait frames on the final sunday. o'sullivan, 44, is the oldest champion since ray reardon who was 45 when he took the title in 1978. englishman o’sullivan in collecting £500,000 in prize money, moved back up to being second in the world behind last year's champion Judd trump. o’sullivan’s victory was the biggest winning margin in a final since 2008, when he defeated ali carter by the same score line. immediately after his latest title victory, o'sullivan told BBc two viewers: "i never really think about titles. when i was a kid, i never really thought i would be here. however, by keeping coming and having all these victories it is a dream that has become a reality. there was part of me that decided i didn't play enough to justify winning a tournament of this stature which is an endurance test. i feel i am not really an endurance type player because i don't compete enough. i felt i had half a chance but didn't expect to win it." there has long been a debate about who is the greatest snooker player of all time? steve davis dominated the 1980s. steven hendry reigned in the 1990s but o'sullivan

now stands alone in terms of ranking events won. his latest accomplishment took him to the top of the pile, having won his first title back in 1993 at the uk championship aged just 17. he also collected a record-extending 20th triple crown title. an enigmatic character, o'sullivan often battles his own demons and did so in the final with his cue action, though he displayed both his supreme and slapdash manner during the 17 days of this tournament. he hammered thailand's thepchaiya un-nooh 10-1 in his opening match in a record 108 minutes, defeated the dangerous ding Junhui and responded from large deficits to oust three-time winners mark williams and mark selby.

But there have been issues too, stating snooker players were being treated like "lab rats" for allowing fans to attend the first day - with spectators returning for the final, while selby described him as "disrespectful" for some of his rash shot selections during their semi-final. despite operating far from his best on the first day of the final, o'sullivan showcased why he is regarded a sporting genius by still managing to open up a threeframe lead heading into sunday, as the match turned into a procession. having criticised the standard of play lower down the rankings, it is testament to o'sullivan's longevity that his latest world title comes in a third decade - 19 years after his maiden victory - leaving him one adrift of the legendary hendry's haul.

Preparing Your Business for Brexit the government is going full steam ahead with its new Brexit information campaign, ‘the uk’s new start: let’s get going”. its initiative clearly sets out the actions businesses and individuals needs to take to prepare for the end of the transition period on 31 december 2020 and encourage people to seize the opportunities it will bring. a key feature is the ‘check, change and go” strapline which directs people and businesses to an online checker tool at gov.uk/transition which identifies the necessary next steps they should take. also planned is a ‘field force team’ for one-to-one support over the phone for businesses and their supply chains to minimise disruption to the movement of goods.

Brexit talks in Brussels continue to be difficult with two issues – fishing rights and state subsidies – being the main sticking points. the eu remains adamant that it will not allow the uk tariff-and-quota-free access to the eu market unless it signs up to ‘level playing field’ principles to minimise the risk of Britain undercutting the eu on

environmental regulations, workers’ rights and state aid to business. regardless of the outcome, the government is urging people and businesses take the necessary action to prepare, based on their circumstances. steps include: 1. applying for a gB eori number or registering with the relevant customs authority to ensure your business is ready to export or import from/to the eu. all vat-registered businesses which trade with the eu should have received an automatic enrolment from hmrc last year and eori number.

2. applying for a duty deferment account if your business imports goods regularly. this enables customs charges including customs duty, excise duty and import vat to be paid once a month through direct debit instead of being paid on individual consignments.vatregistered traders can instead account for import vat on their vat return using postponed vat accounting.

3. making sure you know all about import tariffs. the ‘trade with the uk’ tool provides information on tariffs, taxes and rules for those currently being

Health and fitness in 2020 How to get rid of the belly bloat!

so much has happened and developed in my world, and of course the world of wellness and nutrition too during lockdown.with health being at the forefront of everyone’s minds, i have never been busier.what i have found through, is that people have either gone one way or the other! they have either exercised little maniacs, and got muscles like silvester stallone, or they have eaten too many cakes, drunk too much wine and put on three stone! if you are the latter and feel like your tummy is bloating like you’re five months pregnant, do not fear! i have some advice for you that will hopefully help. having a bloated tummy is such a common complaint across the board, no matter what your age, size, or how your hormones are functioning, but it’s good to know that you can put some of the blame on biology! did you know that a woman’s colon is 10 centimetres longer than a mans and is constantly competing for space with the bladder, uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes? plus, in order to prepare us for pregnancy and subsequent extra water retention, our colons are more of a winding path with lots of unexpected turns. so, if you think about it logically, it’s not surprising that we bloat from time to time. luckily, there are certain things we can do that can help prevent us from bloating, and the most basic lifestyle adjustments can have a positive impact. simple things such as making sure you're getting lots of fibre day-to-day, cutting back on salt and processed foods, and increasing your water intake can often be a good starting point to minimize that bloated feeling. there are lots of natural ways to support your digestive system to calm things down and there are several foods you can eat or avoid eating. plus, activities you can do to keep yourself in check and here are a few natural solutions for you to try: 1. Consume Plant-Based Probiotics if you and your swollen stomach need a bit of extra help, the best thing you can do is include some live bacteria that can help address imbalance in the gut flora.your gut flora, or your gut microbiome, is the system of microbes that live in your digestive tract that can have an influence on everything from iBs to depression. probiotics are your very own superheroes that stop bad bacteria and yeast from accumulating in your intestines. kimchi, sauerkraut, tempeh, and kombucha are all great options for getting probiotics into your diet, plus they help to ensure regular bowl movements, as constipation can be a major factor of bloating. so, you need to stay regular!

2. Drink Fennel Tea fennel is really helpful when it comes to soothing the digestion.you can put crushed or whole seeds in a cup of boiling water and let it infuse for ten minutes before you sip on it. there's always the option of sprinkling them on top of your next meal, too.

3. Sip on Water with Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice drinking lots of water is so helpful when it comes to digestive health and adding lemon can help as it’s a great source of soluble fibre, which can help reduce constipation and bloating. Being properly hydrated helps your body move nutrients through your system faster and is generally a good idea if you want to successfully fight bloating.

4. Be Mindful of The Beans You Eat i love beans and talk about adding them into your diet to help you feel full and satisfied and give you extra plant-based protein. however, for some people the extra fibre they bring to your diet can sometimes increase bloating.when the sugars in beans break down, they can cause a build-up of gas. soaking beans overnight is touted as a method to make them easier on digestion but rinsing tinned beans should be just fine too. if beans are a new addition to your diet try only adding a few at a time to let your body adjust and get used to them.

5. Drink Less Coffee as you may know coffee is naturally dehydrating, which increases acid production, and irritates your gi tract, all of which provide the perfect blend for bloating! sorry all your coffee lovers! But we live in the real world and, for many of us, kissing coffee goodbye in order to reduce a bloated stomach simply isn't an option. if this is you, then just try limiting yourself to one cup of coffee or less a day to help prevent coffeerelated bloat.

6. Eat Ginger or Drink Ginger Tea ginger has been used for centuries to cure all kinds of basic ailments.two compounds called gingerols and shogaols found in this root can reduce inflammation in your gut and send a strong message to the muscles in your intestines to chill out. cut a few very thin slices of fresh ginger and soak in boiling water for ten minutes.you can add honey, apple cider vinegar and a squeeze of lemon to make it tasty.you can even chew on little pieces of raw ginger for a quick fix, if you don't mind the taste. powdered ginger root, which you can take daily as a supplement, is also an option.

7. Do A Few Simple Yoga Moves not only does it ease muscular and joint pain, but yoga additionally offers relief when your digestive system is all tangled up.there are a few different postures you can do at home starting with apanasana, which is basically lying on your back and hugging your knees into

History,Tradition and Passion Jonathan Rogers of VIN Wine Merchants in Emsworth looks at this historical wine producing country. moldovan wine is nothing new, at least not to the moldovan growers and wine makers. the first vines in fact date back 7000 years Bc and five thousand years ago thracians were able to make grape wine. more recently when moldova was annexed to the russian empire in 1812, russian aristocrats drove up interest and moldovan wine soon became popular with the tsar. sandwiched between romania and ukraine, moldova is on the same latitude as some world class wine producing regions such as lombardy in northern italy and Burgundy in france. it has 112,000 hectares of vines which is bigger than new Zealand and grows more vines per person than anywhere else in the world. today, winemakers have kept up with tradition growing traditional grape varieties such as rara neagre, saperavi, fateasca regala, but skilfully integrating them with the major grape varieties of the world such as cabernet sauvignon, riesling, chardonnay etc. three main regions make up the production, codru in the north, stefan voda in the centre and valul lui traian in the south, each with their own pgi (protected geographical indication). the industry is so

important to the local economy that 330 million euros has been invested in new plantings, equipment and technology over the last 10 years and this has helped grow the industry which now exports 67 million bottles to over 30 countries world-wide. there is no question of quality, wine making expertise has been handed down through the generations and as so many people depend on the industry in moldova their determination to get it right is there to be seen.

s we continue to socially distance, the BBQ is the ideal place to do as much cooking as possible.you can be outside, keeping your distance, but being social while you prepare your meal. vegetables aren’t usually the first thing that come to mind when thinking about BBQ, but with a little planning, it’s simple to do and the results are delicious. the smoky, charred flavour of charcoal can really enhance the taste and texture of vegetables, and if you still want to eat meat, then you can cook the veg last minute while the meat rests. we have some wonderful local veg that is ideal for the grill and in season at the moment. with hampshire courgettes, peppers from tangmere and aubergines from the isle of wight in abundance, you

have a whole range of cooking options. there is some strange alchemy when you cook aubergines in wood-smoke, the combination is irresistible and really brings out the best in aubergine.you can grill them in slices with a bit of olive oil, then add creme fraiche, lemon juice, pomegranate seeds and chipotle sauce to make a substantial and scrummy salad. the peppers are great on their own, adding a wonderful blaze of colour to any dish, but can be stuffed with almost any combination for a delicious veggie main course. think of rice or couscous, with some chilli heat and lots of herbs. courgettes are now abundant, sweet and delicious grilled, especially with a little garlic, rosemary, olive oil and sea salt. Just be careful not to lose any between the grills!

What’s on rowlands castle painting society has been lucky to resume their tuesday painting/picnic days out recently. langstone harbour was visited, luckily the day was very bright, although with quite a breeze at times. the low tide exposed the remains of the wadeway, this footpath has probably been in existence since pre-roman times. at low tide this was the access to hayling island for walking or riding until the first wooden bridge was finished in 1824. many members enjoyed painting the view of the old mill with its tough black tarred outer skin. a working mill until around the first world war and at one time owned by the artist flora twort and so much a part of the landscape at langstone. another previous picnic/painting day took place at portchester castle where the weather and light were

very good for our members to enjoy. a very popular place for picnics and socializing outside. the best preserved of the roman saxon shore forts, portchester castle is cared for by english heritage. the castle is now back open, booked tickets only. the norman st mary's church within the walled castle grounds is another inspiration for the artist. on all the painting/picnic days out members enjoy the social aspect of getting together and having a chat. spokesperson for the group Jan roblin said “more sketches/paintings can be seen on our web site www.rowlandscastlepaintingsociety.c o.uk of the various locations recently visited by members.” rowlands castle painting society is a friendly, open to all abilities painting society which welcomes new members.

stop domestic abuse shares in £15 million emergency coronavirus fundingfor domestic abuse charities. stop domestic abuse, a local charity, supporting victims and survivors of domestic abuse has secured £276,967 from the ministry of Justice.victims of domestic abuse are benefiting from £15 million of emergency funding during the pandemic to help domestic abuse charities provide remote services and expand their support. social distancing measures mean that charities may not be able to offer face-toface support for some of its services and this means that they must transfer to deliver remote services to provide victims with the practical and emotional help they need. stop domestic abuse will now receive funding to maintain their life-saving services. it will allow them to employ more staff, keep helplines open longer, as well as fund the technology needed for other forms of contact with victims - such as video calls. the pandemic could not have come at a worse time for specialist domestic abuse services who have faced years of funding crises and are now operating in a 'perfect storm' of lost fundraising income, additional costs of remote working, increasing complexity of caseloads, and staff shortages. this funding will ensure that stop domestic abuse can ensure that life-saving community-based support to women, children and men affected by domestic abuse continues to be delivered during the covid-19 emergency. this funding success follows the award of £291,608 from the ministry of housing, communities & local

government’s domestic abuse safe accommodation: mhclg covid-19 emergency support fund which is also part of the government’s package of support for the most vulnerable in society. the government recognises the need to protect specialist domestic abuse services such as stop domestic abuse which provide trauma-informed services to those affected by domestic abuse. this funding will help resource stop domestic abuse’s community-based services until 31 october 2020 since 23/03/2020: • national domestic abuse helpline has seen a 66% increase in calls in may 2020 calls and 950% increase in website traffic compared to pre-covid • self-referrals to stop domestic abuse are 88% higher in June 2020 than in march and april 2020 as government restrictions are eased • in June 2020 calls to stop domestic abuse advice lines are 57% higher than in march and april 2020 as government restrictions are eased • in June 2020 35% more adults are being supported by stop domestic abuse on a one to one basis at any one time compared to february 2020 (pre-lockdown). stop domestic abuse expects referrals for help and support to continue to increase as there are more opportunities to leave the home: schools re-open, a&e and gp visits return to normal levels, health visitors and social workers resume home visits and other agencies resume services. claire lambon ceo says: “i am delighted

to that we have secured government covid-19 funding to support our services. whilst these funding resources are vital, they are only short-term, and we desperately need longer-term funding to continue to support the increase in demand for our services. the covid-19 crisis has exposed the lack of protection and support for survivors of domestic abuse. as a specialist organisation we want the government to make the prevention of abuse, protection and support for survivors, and pursuit of perpetrators central to the covid-19 response. it was foreseeable that the mass experience of isolation, and the closure of many routes to safety and support, would be used as a tool of coercive control by perpetrators and increase physical and emotional harm. the impact on victims and their children will last for years. i am grateful to my colleagues at stop domestic abuse for their incredible response to support those affected by domestic abuse during this pandemic. many have remained in client facing roles in order to keep the refuges open and to deliver services to vulnerable adults and children. colleagues have been flexible, particularly where their role is not suitable for home working, and they have been re-deployed or re-trained to deliver other roles within the organisation. stop domestic abuse will continue to work to ensure that we meet the needs of all affected by domestic abuse. we are continuing to deliver services across portsmouth and hampshire and our refuges are still open. please do contact us for help and support. our vision is a world without

Jonas is a 9so we are in phase three of entered a photo of me but i’m just so good looking experience of nervous cats and will be year-old black and white neutered male re-opening our rehoming and it’s that they didn’t let me enter, so instead i helped to able to give him the time he needs. cat. he has been living here at the been going amazing! my staff are so busy right now, choose the final eighteen that were sent to susan. we’re not sure how Jonas will settle centre since december 2019 as his replying to emails, making phone calls and booking we didn’t ask for a specific entry fee but we did into a home but we hope he might be owner had become ill and they were people in to meet their chosen animals (as well as ask if you could make an entry fee donation, happier than being here, his new owner struggling, also he didn’t really get on looking after all the animals of course). phew.. however small it would really help us through this will need to be very patient with him as well with the other cat.
