The Ukrainian Art Project painting a picture of resilience and hope the ukrainian art group has gifted Havant Borough council a collaborative art piece as a symbol of appreciation for our support of the ukrainian art project. the ukrainian art project was run by creatful and supported by Havant Borough council from 2023 to 2024. it offered a supportive space for ukrainian children and adults affected by war and displacement.

Led by ukrainian art teacher and art therapy practitioner maryna melnyk, the project helped participants revive their ties to tradition and heritage, process emotions, and explore personal growth. they were able to develop their creativity through fine art, traditional decorative painting, clay modelling and mixed media. the artwork, titled ‘tree of life’ is a stretched canvas in the traditional ukrainian folk style petrykivka – a vivid decorative painting that carries motifs of life, hope, and resilience. maryna melnyk said: “we were honoured to present our artwork as a token of our

10,000 Oysters Scrubbed by Volunteers as Part of Solent Restoration Project volunteers have scrubbed 10,000 native european flat oysters as part of the Final straw Foundation’s oyster restoration project. the oysters, sourced from pembrokeshire, wales, are being prepared for installation at sites across portsmouth, Hayling island, and gosport, Hampshire, where they will help restore local marine ecosystems. the 24th, 25th and 26th november 2025, saw more than 150 volunteers

dedicate a combined effort of over 700 hours working at the university of portsmouth’s marine labs, which generously provided the facilities for the event. the project has been guided by the Blue marine Foundation, ensuring that best practice conservation methods are followed at every stage. european flat oysters have declined by 95% since the 1800s due to disease, overexploitation, habitat loss, and pollution.

as ‘ecosystem engineers,’ these oysters are vital for improving water quality, stabilizing sediment, creating habitats for other species, and supporting overall biodiversity. once installed, they will act as broodstock, releasing offspring to help repopulate the solent.

Before they can be installed, oysters must be carefully cleaned to ensure they are biosecure and free from any contaminants that could harm delicate marine ecosystems.volunteers scrub the oysters to remove worm casts, algae, and other debris, making sure the oysters are healthy and ready for their new home. over the course of the project, a total of 10,000 oysters will be prepared and deployed. campaigns officer for the Final straw Foundation, Hannah cooper, said: "we are absolutely thrilled with the dedication and hard work of our volunteers over the past three days. scrubbing 10,000 oysters is an incredible achievement and brings us one step closer to restoring these remarkable creatures to the solent. cleaning the oysters carefully is crucial to ensure we protect our local waters, and it’s inspiring to see so many people come together to make a real difference for our marine ecosystems. we

can’t wait to see these oysters thriving in their new homes across portsmouth, Hayling island, and gosport." the Final straw Foundation extends heartfelt thanks to all volunteers, the university of portsmouth, and the Blue marine Foundation for their support in making this project a success and contributing to the long-term restoration of the solent’s marine environment.

Year Two of Water sports residential twenty-six year 10 Btec sport students went on an unforgettable five-day water sports trip to uksa on the isle of wight at the end of october. the group took part in a full programme of activities both on and off the water, designed to challenge them, build confidence and develop key life skills. each day saw students rotate through

two hands-on sessions, followed by an evening activity that kept energy levels high and teamwork strong. Highlights included kayaking along the coastline, stand-up paddleboarding, and learning the fundamentals of windsurfing. students also had the chance to try keel boating and take part in a series of lively water-based games. staff praised the students for their

enthusiasm, resilience and willingness to push challenge but also a valuable learning experience. Success Celebrated at Second Annual Awards evening Havant academy celebrated the achievements of its students on the evening of thursday 23 october during the school’s second annual awards ceremony, recognising exceptional progress, determination and contribution throughout the academic year of 2024/25.

Held in the academy’s atrium, the event brought together students, parents, staff and the wider community for an evening of recognition and pride. awards were presented across a range of categories, highlighting academic achievement. now in its second year, the annual awards evening has quickly become a highlight of the school calendar, reinforcing Havant academy’s focus on recognising progress and effort as much

ring the Changes

church Bells. we've grown accustomed to hearing them. many of us had bells at our wedding. and many more have appreciated their timeless sound at times of victory, commemoration, new year and many other times of celebration. i’m kev Lee, captain of bells at st peter and st paul, Hambledon. a beautiful ancient church in the heart of the village with a ring of six bells, three of which have been rung since 1749. they rang for waterloo, trafalgar and ve day. they rang for Queen victoria’s and king charles iii coronations, and all coronations in between. one person to a rope we need six to ring the circle. and that is increasingly becoming a problem.we urgently need more ringers. so let’s dispel some myths.

• you do not have to be religious. it is a secular activity. everyone is welcome.

• you don't need to be physically strong. once proficient, many bells are rung with not much more than finger tip control.

• and if you ever thought it was just pulling a rope, you've been misinformed. there’s so much more to it. always something new to learn. if you think you might be interested, the first step is to visit a tower and see the fun we have. if you want to, climb to the belfry and see the bells. Have a first try. and if you want to develop further, that’s easily arranged. How much tax revenue does the UK Classic Car industry generate? i recently attended a session put on for those operating in the classic car industry, reviewing the findings of an organisation called assetclassic. although i am not generally that keen on classic cars being viewed in financial terms or treated as assets, i am more interested in their history and peoples passion for rusty old cars, i confess i found their findings interesting. among

their conclusions were that the total value of the global classic car market is around €80bn, with a value chain of €89–90bn, and that the wider industry revolving around classic cars is significant at approximately €40bn. this prompted me to consider: what size is the uk market and, particularly in the light of the recent budget and the months leading up to it, how much tax revenue does the industry generate? the point being that the classic car world has a far larger economic footprint than many might imagine. while we could find no recent, fully reliable evidence, Hero-era produced a report in 2020

do you love winter? cold, crisp days where you can view the world and your garden with clarity. these are the months to prepare and plan, to prune, weed and add dormant plants ready to burst to life in spring. when you see you see the bare structure of your garden you can plan where to fill in gaps and add more plants for later in the year. we often see mid-winter as a time when nothing is happening in the garden, but it is an excellent time to spend some time outdoors. this is a good time to attack perennial and persistent weeds by digging them up from the roots and to mulch around the base of plants to add nutrients. most plants are best left overwinter for wildlife, but you can start a slow cut back as plants start to look the worse for wear. greenhouses and sheds also benefit from a clean and tidy up. if you have never tried growing potatoes (seed potatoes can be purchased at our trading centre or online) this is the best time of year to start this process. chitting potatoes means sprouting the potato tuber –

putting it, most eyes upright, in a light, cool but frost-free place at about 50F (10c). if you have only a few potato tubers, you can line them up in egg cartons or a shallow box, taking care to separate the potatoes and keep them upright. after 4-6 weeks strong, short green shoots should appear about 23cms long from the eyes of each tuber. these can then be planted out once the soil has warmed up, anytime from mid-march. there are many creative ways to grow potatoes if space is limited (deep pots or sacks) and this is certainly something our younger gardeners might enjoy getting involved in. there is nothing tastier than a freshly dug potato!

this time i haven’t got a question, but something that happened to me. i suddenly found one morning that my tyre had gone soft. not too much, so i pumped it up and went for a short ride. next morning it had gone soft again so i reckoned i had a small puncture and took the tyre off and checked the tube out. i could see no sign of a puncture so put some air in it before holding it a section at a time into a bowl of water.

there was no sign of a puncture but there were a few bubbles coming up from the valve itself. i’ve never had this before with the presta type of valve so i was very surprised and thought i’d have to get a new tube. However i found that the valve unscrews and the central part or core could be removed and in fact replacements are freely available and cheap. it cost me about £5.00 for a pack of ten, but i may have been lucky. so i had to buy a pack of ten to replace just one, but i expect that i’ll need to use the others sooner or later, and i replaced the valve core put some air into the tube and checked under water again and there was no leak, so i refitted the tyre and everything was fine.

How could the valve suddenly start to

leak after several years on the bike? the valve is in effect totally enclosed inside an airtight rubber tube? what could possibly happen in there ? my guess is that every time we inflate our tyres we are pumping in air at the ambient temperature and humidity of the time and place. chances are that this will be in the summer because we do most of our cycling in the good weather, so when the weather changes, and winter comes and goes year in and out, and any moisture in the air condenses out. the only metal inside the tube is the valve components, so it is possible that a little bit of corrosion can crop up.

the actual seal for the air is a tiny rubber disc and this, too can be affected by moisture and ever changing temperature. mystery solved. i now know what to do if i get a strange leak that isn’t a puncture, just unscrew the valve core and put a new one in. sorted!

Hello, my name is chekov, and i am one of the resident cats at the cat & rabbit rescue centre. see you next month. this month, i wanted to share the story of two very special kittens, Liam and his brother noel, who have had quite a tough start in life. they arrived at the centre as kittens, and now at just six months old, Liam has already had to face major surgery to give him the best chance at a happy, active future. when they first came to us, they were both battling fleas, worms, sickness, and injuries to their tails. But poor Liam was struggling to move around on his back legs. after a check with our vet, we learned that Liam had luxating patellas in both of his

SOUTHMOOr – a new walking route fit for a king

a new section of the king charles iii coastal path has recently opened at southmoor nature reserve between Langstone and Brockhampton. in october 2021, the already weakened sea wall was breached during a storm allowing the area to flood at high tide. Back in 2017 a plan was considered to allow such a breach to happen under the national policy of “managed realignment”. Breaching of

existing sea defences allows the formation of new flood plains, salt marsh and wildlife habitats. it also provides a buffer to absorb wave energy and in theory can protect adjacent more developed areas. the plan did not proceed because of concerns about damage to underlying utilities. nature has now taken charge and over recent years the flooded area has started to mature into a more natural state, creating a new biodiverse wetland. Breach of the seawall however has resulted in a breakdown of the coastal path which becomes impassable at certain states of the tide. the king charles iii england coast path is a new 2700-mile national trail around all of england’s coast. it is expected that the

path will connect communities around the english coastline from northumberland to cumbria. driven by the need to re-instate the coastal path as part of the king charles route, Hampshire county council working with the Hampshire and isle of wight wildlife trust (Hiiwt) have created a raised walkway that tracks the northern perimeter of southmoor. this excellent development now offers a very welcome “high tide” route as well as the possibility of a delightful circular walk when the tide recedes. the path along the western margin has been cleared and enhanced to allow mobility access and signage has been added. the new route is very timely as a recent study published in the journal ambio has judged Britain to be one the least “nature connected” ranking 57 out of 61 countries. this new route offers great local access to a

beautiful environment. experiencing nature has many recognised health benefits for both physical and mental wellbeing. people with a high degree of “nature connectedness” are more likely to adopt a positive approach to the natural environment.

Locals demand action to save river “on its knees” campaigners are calling on the national environment watchdog to take urgent action to save a local chalk stream and the wildlife that depends on it. in many places, the river ems has run dry or been reduced to a trickle following the summer drought. populations of key species have crashed alarmingly. campaigners say they want the environment agency (ea), set up to protect and improve the environment, to do its job.

But it continues to allow portsmouth water to pump unsustainable amounts of water from the river’s underground sources. and local citizen scientists who monitor the river’s wildlife say the agency has failed to respond to their findings. they are calling on the ea to investigate the dramatic drop in river wildlife and urgently cut the amount of water that portsmouth water is allowed to remove. the ems runs from the south downs into chichester Harbour. it is fed by springs coming from the underground chalk bedrock, or aquifer, and flows from the south downs through westbourne, on the Hants/west sussex border, before reaching the sea at emsworth. chalk streams like the ems are as internationally rare and ecologically important as coral reefs or rainforests. rare species including water voles and eels have been recorded in the ems, and local

people have been used to seeing kingfishers, brown trout and many species of bat. the campaign group Friends of the ems (Fote) has been pushing for a reduction in the amount of water taken – or “abstracted” – from the river’s sources. the ea controls an abstraction licence, dating back to the 1960s, which allows portsmouth water to keep removing water from the underground aquifer. the amount removed has steadily increased.

Fote founder-member John Barker, a freshwater ecologist, lives on a farm in westbourne. the ems runs through his land and he regularly samples the river for key species that indicate its health. around

Dowsing in Havant i was asked recently if my dowsing rods were somehow ‘tuned’ to me or could anyone use them. i lent them to the enquirer for a few minutes to show that they weren’t. a few weeks later i was showing someone else how to dowse and the movements were a bit weak, so they asked if it would get more positive as the rods got used to the person. i replied that it was more likely the other way round. as you get more used to using the rods you become more familiar with them (and also dowsing in general) and as you become more comfortable you start to feel more at ease . think of it like riding a bike or driving

a car, at first a new vehicle feels a little bit different but you get used to it. as i have said, the dowsing implements are inanimate objects, it is the dowser who dowses, not the rods or pendulum. i started out in my dowsing experience looking at roman roads as they permeated the country, and so there was a network of them. the mansio in what is now Havant park was actually in the middle of our local network so it is reasonable to expect to find several roads lost to time in the area. i knew that the old roman road from chichester changed direction by a few degrees at Havant, and identified the point at which it did. in the churchyard, by the

tree just opposite the robin Hood pub. at this point we now have Homewell, a short n/s road. i dowsed if this had been a roman road, and yes, it ran through costa coffee shop, and the meridian centre (which of course wasn’t there then) and changed direction slightly to get to the mansio in Havant park, and then off through the park. we know that the romans were famous for their arrow straight roads so i wondered why this road had so many changes of directions until it left Havant park. the roman army built the major roads as part of their invasion and control of the Brits (that’s us) but retiring soldiers were

given a pension in the form of a plot of land on which to build a home and a farm. i suspect that any minor connecting roads may have had to avoid cutting through these estates, and in the case of Havant park a slight detour to get to the previously established mansio before heading off north. north of what is now the railway it went through the Job centre, across the police car park, under the Horizon Leisure centre, and across the petersfield road. (any reference to buildings and modern street names is, of course, not implying that those buildings existed 2000 years ago) dowseman

the industrial revolution is sometimes depicted as beginning in the 19th century, whereas it began well before that. a complex process of industrialization, had unforeseen consequences for British people, changing lives both of those who migrated to the new expanding towns and those who remained in rural occupations. did it influence only those in the midlands and the north, or were lives here in the south equally changed? this course considers the impact of industrialization upon the lives of our recent ancestors.

the 10 week course will be held at the emsworth community centre commencing on thursday 8th January from 10am to midday and finishing on 19th march with a break for half term on 19th February.

Air Aces Monday 26th January - 1845 for1930 “Flying and displaying vintage piston aircraft” presented by mr rod dean. rod dean is a familiar face to many of us, not only as a greatly valued patron of airaces, but also as a superb speaker on many aspects of aviation. rod is one of the most respected figures in aviation – not only as a hugely experienced display pilot, but also Flying display director and Flying display coordinator at numerous air shows. this talk “Flying and displaying vintage piston aircraft” looks at his 40 years of display flying with particular emphasis on the classic vintage aircraft such as the

mustang, Hurricane, spitfire and many others. Highlights include some far flung venues such as sumburgh and displays in what had been east germany and other parts of europe. also includes a technical review of a number of the big piston engine fighters and finishes with a look back at a number of particularly memorable moments and events.

Monday 23rd february - 1845 for 1930 two talks - “90 years of the spitfire” and “winkle – our greatest aviator” presented by mr paul Beaver. paul Beaver is a leading aviation historian, broadcaster and author, as well as an historic airplane pilot who has been flying the spitfire since 2011. He has

written more than forty books. as well as being an author, paul has been a television war reporter, journalist with Jane’s, a parliamentary advisor and served twentyseven years in the territorial army, rising to the rank of colonel in the army air corps.

90 years of the Spitfire. paul Beaver explores the amazing icon’s legacy through the prism of r J mitchell. paul’s latest book is entitled mitcHeLL which was published in september 2025. in the book, the author follows the engineering successes of the man who is truly the Father of the spitfire.

memories of christmas and the new year may still be residing comfortably in our short-term memory banks but, for the cricket club, January heralds the build up to the coming season. the first instalments are the indoor nets sessions for the different club sections. the starting dates for these are as follows: u9s will be on Mondays 6-7 pm at warblington school starting on feb 2nd. u 11s and u13s will be on Thursdays 6-7.30 pm, again at warblington starting on 5th feb. the men's session follow the u11s and u13s on Thursdays from 7.30-0 pm starting on Thurs 5th feb. the ladies' sessions will begin at warblington on Sat 31st Jan 9-10 am with other sessions being on both saturdays and wednesdays. all new and current players are welcome to join in. please see our social media pages or website for further details.

What’s on NeW YeAr ArT AT rOWLANDS CASTLe it was a successful autumn of art at rowlands castle. the november exhibition was very successful . attendance

was up, sales were at a record high and visitors and members alike enjoyed the friendly atmosphere. members have also been hard at work at the Life group sessions and the workshops. andy kerr, led a special portrait workshop using paint and pastels. painting hands is always tricky to get right and regular visitor, sharon Hurst gave many tips to get a realistic rendition in watercolour. sue cooper demonstrated painting an animal portrait, with some

members following her model, others applying themselves to painting their own pet. detailed advice on how to paint eyes was especially useful as was a demonstration of a light box.

January 6th there is a workshop on still Life in acrylics.

January 13th and January 27th are Life group sessions.

January 23rd there is a workshop by professional Jo silcock for an abstract

coastal scene in acrylics. february 3rd yvonne Bromley is demonstrating a wolf picture in pastels. new members will always be very welcome at: rowLands castLe parisH rooms on tuesdays 2pm – 4.30pm.- visitors £5 a session or reduced membership for January to september is £30.
