TROSNANT SCHOOL START MIYAWAKI FOREST PROJECT The Federation of Trosnant schools are participating in creating a Mini Miyawaki method forest. This method is an effective way to create a dense forest by using native trees such as crab apples, oak, wild cherry, black popular, elder, hazel and silver birch.

What happens when families disagree over their loved one’s body funeral?

There is no legal right of ownership to a deceased’s body, but the Executor named in the Will or, if none, the person who administers his estate under the intestacy rules, usually arranges the funeral.

In a recent case Peter’s daughter and his partner argued for many months over his funeral arrangements.

Eventually the daughter brought a claim against Peter’s partner that Peter died without a Will and , therefore, as he was not married she, as the person entitled to administer and inherit his estate, was also entitled to decide his funeral arrangements. The partner counter-claimed that there was a valid Will and as the Executor named in it she should make the funeral arrangements.

The Court decided that Peter’s Will was valid even though he had “signed” with his fingerprint. So the partner, as the

Executor named in it, could arrange his funeral.

TROSNANT SCHOOL START MIYAWAKI FOREST PROJECT The saplings grown faster as they compete to reach the sun, they also capture more carbon dioxide and create more biodiversity. This then allows the children to be surrounded in nature and to participate in activities such as mindfulness and understanding why trees are so important in our ever changing climate.

The children at Trosnant Infant and Junior school planted a total of 1000 trees with every child having the chance to plant at least one tree (if not more). The project

was supported by Hampshire Forest Partnership who supplied the school with all the trees and prepared the land. The school also had help from Havant tree wardens who assisted the children when planting.

The planting took place over two days and was well received with enthusiasm from the children and adults.

The trees are settling in well and will be looked after by the children and forest school practitioner.

Brendan Gibb Gray BEM We are sad to report that Brendan passed away peacefully at Queen Alexandra Hospital on 26th December 2023 .

For twelve years Brendan represented the residents of Emsworth as a Havant Brough Councillor where he was elected Alderman following his retirement.

As a former detective chief superintendent in the Met, Brendan dealt with terrorism and murder on the streets of the capital for 35 years.

It was good preparation for his next role working in the EU’s anti-corruption unit in South Africa during the historic election which saw Nelson Mandela surge to power.

His efforts in helping to establish the Emsworth Memorial Arboretum will serve him as a lasting memory.

Brendan will be sadly missed by his parter Yvonne, children Dominic and Fiona, and all those that enjoyed his company.

How Slimming World Changed my Life My desire is to help everyone that wishes to lose weight, but in particular I would like to help new mums, I know how difficult it can be to lose weight in order to get pregnant and the struggles women face after giving birth. Here's how I know.

I first started my Slimming World journey back in 2017 - My body had changed so much after trying for a baby via IVF, I was also transitioning from shift work to regular hours which meant I was able to commit to attending a Slimming World group, I was so excited to be able to do this!

I didn't have a positive experience when I first joined the group, I only ever lost around 1/2 a stone, I was doing everything by the book and just couldn't understand it. I had become more active, doing more cycling and running so I felt a little disheartened.

I ended up returning to shift work in 2018 so I was unable to commit to Slimming World group. This is when I realised I had to focus on my fertility

journey. I had several baby losses and then Covid hit, it was such a difficult time.

Hormones had such an impact on my body, I had 7 failed IVF rounds, which included 3 losses - it was just 2 days after my 51st birthday I decided that losing weight for my final round of IVF was the way forward. I joined Slimming World at The Stride Centre, Warblington where I met a lovely consultant called Martin. This time I started losing the weight, I also learnt a very valuable life lesson Never judge a book by it's cover. This may sound clichéd but it's so true, I thought Martin appeared overweight so I wasn't convinced by him. However, he had lost a staggering 15 stone and was a true inspiration.

I started to feel and see a difference in my body, I had more energy, more focus and my family and friends started to see a difference which really spurred me on. In four months I had lost 1st 9.51bs so I was

ready to embark on my IVF journey again, sadly this was unsuccessful but I continued going to the group and it became about looking good for a holiday!

My desire to become a mother didn't disappear, without telling anyone I went to Cyprus for another round of IVF which was successful! I had lost 2st 2Ibs in the lead up to this trip which I'm utterly convinced helped me on my journey.

I continued to attend Slimming World whilst pregnant and at 31 weeks my gorgeous twin girls were born, after 10 days I had lost all of my baby weight.

In total I lost 3.5t and 31b and have continued to stay within my target range, my girls are now 16 months old.

My Sliming World journey has been amazing on both sides of motherhood, it has inspired me to be the best version of me and I want to inspire people the way Martin and all the supportive members of my Slimming World group inspired me.

New South Downs Way Bench Friends of the South Downs (FSD) has installed another of a series of distinctive benches for the weary walker along the South Downs Way (SDW) at Salt Hill.

On this bench, our bench installer Nathan Blatherwick has skilfully carved an owl from the unique shape of the wood he has used.

South Downs Way walker Lucy Pitts commented “I walked the SDW. Day one was the toughest and at 10k I decided to have my first stop. It was quite a remote spot but there was a FSD bench. It may seem silly but it felt really special. It was at

a point I was doubting my abilities. And there you were. And it sort of cheered me on. So never underestimate the power of a bench!”

March – ‘Springtime is the Land Awakening’ From Liese Holden

We have just had an excellent talk by Annie Guilfoyle describing what makes a good garden. No one garden is the same and what really makes a good garden is really completely up to the individual and your own preferences.

Annie spoke a great deal about where you can get inspiration for your garden design and it can be your favourite colours, a piece of art or just a reflection of the environment you live in and what grows best. A concept called ‘Gentle Gardening’ is a technique where you work with what grows naturally in your garden – most often these plants are identified as weeds or ‘volunteer’ plants. Naturalising part of the garden can complement organised planting and sometimes just cutting the grass around natural areas can be very effective. Annie spoke about a garden being a journey, leading the eye to unexpected places.

This can be done in the smallest of gardens by a small, curved path or creating rooms within the garden.

March is an excellent to time to plan your garden for the year ahead and you can start by planting seeds indoors to plant out later. Maybe think about achieving some layers by introducing plants of different heights and textures.

We are always being asked the best time to give roses a final prune and a good feed/mulch and this can be done in February -March. We have a talk on Wed 6th March by local specialist Elizabeth Sawday from Apuldram Roses entitled Roses Grown on You which should be very interesting and informative on this subject.

As Spring arrives it is the time to tidy up our gardens and cut back any plants that were left to overwinter. It is exciting to see the new buds and shoots appearing as the weather gets better, but beware of late frosts on tender and halfhardy plants so make sure they stay protected. We have a workshop on How to Take Softwood Cuttings on Thursday 25th April – this will help to increase

your plant stock.

We also have a trip planned to the exciting and innovative gardens at West Dean where we will be shown round by the Head Gardener -Tom Brown. This is planned for Thursday 28th March –

shared lifts available – make sure you book early for this!

Are classic cars harming the planet?

On the face of it, one might be forgiven for thinking that classic cars are bad for the environment. The smell of a classic engine running might be an attractive feature to classic car enthusiasts, but tailpipe emissions are very much seen as the enemy these days.

Indeed, there is no getting away from the fact that burning fossil fuels leads to climate change.

Despite this, classic cars are much closer to net zero than you might expect. The classic car industry is built on the back of a reuse and

I’m writing this article still in the depths of our winter chill in February, but while the ice is on the car I can’t be anything but cheery at the thought of warm spring days sipping on a nice chilled white or a glass of fizz. It doesn’t seem that long ago that I was recommending big bold heavy reds to warm us up but now we can look forward to the warmth and joys of spring and the lighter more refreshing wines.

On warm days we automatically think of crisp whites and fresh rose wines that we can drink quite happily without the need for food. However, a lot of wines are now arriving on our shelves which are creeping up in alcohol and quite a few of us are finding these too much. When I first started in the trade over 30 years ago, the standard alcohol was around the 11%, nowadays, it’s not unusual to have wines coming in at 14.5%.

If you prefer the lighter style, then stay away from heavily oaked reds and whites. A lot of the tannin in wine (the rough sensation on the tongue and cheeks) comes from the oak barrels, and this is what adds the body in wine.

However, oak also adds sweeter fruit characters, especially vanilla, which gives the wine softness and takes away the acidity.

The coming of spring also means the arrival of Easter and time again to think about feasting. Lamb is the common choice for Easter Sunday and choosing the right wine to have with it will take your meal to the next level. Generally, I tend to recommend lighter reds, but that’s only because I prefer to have a nice pink joint of lamb. If this is your preference then pick the Pinot Noir grape which produces soft, round, fruity and elegant wines. Burgundy in France is the home of Pinot, but generally I haven’t had a bad example from anywhere. If you enjoy your lamb a bit more well done, then upgrade in body to balance the heavier flavours of the meat. Here I’m thinking of Australian Cabernet which has the weight but as its warmer climate you will get more fruit driven characters. If you want less fruit, then go Italian with a

Montepulciano D’Abruzzo or a Primitivo from the Puglia region (the heel of the boot). Although these wines will pair nicely with the lamb, as I always say to everyone, wine is meant to be enjoyed so drink whatever you want with your meals, you will still enjoy it!

We tried hard to save The Stride from closure but this just didn’t work out. The full commercial leasehold conditions imposed by the landlord Havant Borough Council severely affected growth and prosperity for the past six years, causing the leaseholder to call it a day.

Efforts by us to provide the funds and

operating team needed to inject more life into the centre and give it a real chance of continuing to serve the community were not accepted.

However, the landlord has taken back the lease and reopened the Centre. We wish well all who become involved with this very important facility in the future.

In December, Martyn Roberts arranged a ride to Queen Elizabeth Country park, timed to pause at Havant level crossing in New Lane.

This ride was designed for anyone who likes steam trains - is there anyone who doesn't - to try and catch a glimpse of Black 5 No 44871 as it powered through Havant.

On the day some cyclists stood on the railway bridge to watch, while others stood by the crossing gates. For a while nothing happened until someone on the bridge said “It’s coming” and the excitement gradually built, and built .. and then with a massive pounding of pistons and a great whoosh of steam the engine passed followed by successive whooshes as the carriages passed until all that was left was a faint smell in the air from the burnt steam coal, and a sigh coming down from the onlookers.

After remounting bikes it was planned to ride on to Rowlands castle, past the golf course and over the hill to Horndean where the road passes under the A3(M) and then runs alongside. This road was once the main road from London to Portsmouth, but is

now entirely residential on one side but screened from the A road by hedging. So, even when we are cycling along we seem to hear big traffic approaching from behind, but it passes without risk because it is not on ‘our’ road at all, just twenty feet away behind the hedge.

Eventually this road seems to come to an end but there is a cycle/ pedestrian path alongside the main road by the crash barrier but it soon drops down behind another long hedge before joining a slip road running into Charlton Lane and leading through towards The Country Park where refreshments are usually consumed with enthusiasm after the ascent.

Our return journey takes us back to Charlton, passing the Buster Ancient Farm and on passing pleasant open countryside through Finchdean and back to Horndean where some riders branch off to go home by a more direct route for them but the rest return to Havant.

So, not all,about the train, the steam and excitement but a nice diversion to talk about and make an exceptional day.

As well as running regular classes in a variety of craft forms, Making Space has a busy outreach programme, providing subsidised activities in the community, and in its home to a number of professional makers who have their own studios on site. Q. For the last few months, what with the weather etc. I have not been able to ride as much, so I am now looking forward to warmer weather and longer days. Is there anything I can do to build up to getting my confidence back and building up to longer rides?

A Yes,of course the simple answer is to get out more and ride longer and longer distances but I realise this is easier said than done.

We all need motivation, and with the longer days that should start to happen anyway but Portsmouth CTC have revived a series of rides, the Cathedral Challenge,

which had to be suspended because of the pandemic of course but which has only now become possible to arrange. Andy Henderson, club secretary writes: ‘We're running a series of rides in 2024 aimed at people new to group riding, or who haven't cycled for a while. or are looking to cycle a bit further than usual. They start with a short, 'get to know you' ride that includes a free bike check and progress through longer distances, tackling a series of challenges on the way.’

In case “Challenge” seems a bit daunting, it doesn’t involve mud wrestling or cycling over a Tour De France mountain but every ride is a bit longer than the last one.

The idea is that on the first one there will be someone at the start to check your bike over for you, and there will always be someone among the leaders

who will be able to give a hand if anything mechanical happens. So we all start out getting to know each other as we do the first ride to Portsmouth Cathedral. The Bronze challenge.

That’s not too far and it’s pretty much dead flat all the way there and back.

After that most riders will try to get some rides in of their own before we progress to Chichester Cathedral some weeks later. The Silver challenge.

This is a bit further, of course, and there are some ‘lumps’ in the road on the way there. If you have driven to Chichester you probably took the main road which follows the coast and is very flat but that’s a main road ! We try to use quieter country roads which are more interesting to ride but have a few little hills in them. A ride to Chichester with a refreshment stop when we get there and the return ride makes for

a good work-out for beginners and returners alike, and the social contact over coffee adds to the enjoyment.

Either of these challenges is an achievement in itself, but by then some of you will have got the bug and want to go for the Gold Challenge…

Emsworth Cricket Club Emsworth Cricket Club is looking to raise its profile over the coming season particularly with a view to encourage juniors, ladies and past players to join the club.

'Although the weather outside may be frightful, to cricketers, the thought of the summer ahead is delightful. Especially at this time of year!

renovations, the grass has grown well and looking very healthy in readiness for plenty of action from May onwards.

In the meantime, other preparations are being made behind the scenes. The club will be starting indoor nets at the end of January for both seniors and juniors to which all newcomers will be made most welcome. We are also looking

to restart our ladies section. So, if there any girls or ladies curious enough to wonder what all the fuss is about, look out for details in the spring and come along to some taster sessions.

THE CAT & RABBIT RESCUE CENTRE Hello, my name is Chekov and I am one of the resident cats at The Cat & Rabbit Rescue Centre. If you follow CRRC you may know that Hulky Bear usually writes this article. I am so devasted to let you know that sadly at the beginning of January he crossed over his rainbow bridge. He was found by the staff one morning having passed away peacefully surrounded by us other resident cats. He spent nearly 10 years at The Centre where he was loved by everyone who met him, he was such a sweet boy, who enjoyed his fuss from the staff. He will be so missed by all of us resident cats, the staff and volunteers, it will not be the same without him here.

me Chekky. I have been at CRRC since 2016 as my owners could not cope with me. I was very shy and found humans really scary back then, they did try to rehome me but sadly it didn’t work out. So, now I live here, and I love it! I get on well with the other cats and I am often found sleeping in the garden room with them. It has taken me a good few years to trust the staff but if I’m in the right mood, I do love to have a fuss made of me.

In my article this time I wanted to tell you that we had a very cute litter of baby rabbits born at The Centre. We don’t often have rabbits born at The Centre, so it is very exciting to see them grow. Their mum was brought to us at the beginning of January after discovering her owner’s child was allergic to her. My staff had a suspicion that she may have been pregnant as she was living with a male rabbit. Only two days after she arrived, she gave birth to her litter of five baby bunnies. Once the babies

reached 2 weeks they began to emerge from the nest and my staff were able to start interacting with them. They are already such characters; they now love to meet the staff and will even give them a nibble or climb on their laps. It’s so lovely to see them grow and flourish and I can’t wait for them all to find forever homes.

This month we would love to introduce you to a very handsome male rabbit called Bundt Cake. Bundt Cake arrived with us in May 2023 after his owners felt they could no longer give him the care he needed. He is one and half years old and looking to find a forever home with a female bunny he can love. He is a friendly and inquisitive boy who enjoys a cuddle, but he occasionally can be a little territorial of his space. Bundt Cake would benefit from finding an experienced rabbit owner and he would be best with older or no children.

HAMBLEDON FOLK CLUB

Hayling Island played an important part throughout WWII but particularly leading up to D-Day 6th June 1944.

At Hayling Ferry the site of the construction of 4 parts of the Mulberry Harbour, there will be a static display of wartime vehicles during the day and in the evening the Royal Marine Association Concert Band will perform a programme of music including the full ceremony of Sunset and lowering of flags followed by music from the Last Night of the Proms as Hayling’s beacon is lit, together with a pyrotechnic display.

The Hayling event has been made part of the national anniversary commemorations.

These events will take place across the car parks of the Ferry Boat Inn and Johns Café and are free for the public to attend.

There will be no parking in both John’s and the Ferry Boat Inn car park during the day.

Prior to the Sunset ceremony a short remembrance ceremony will be held by Father Mark, a former Royal Marine pastor, with a wreath being laid in the harbour by the Eastney RNLI as the Hayling Ferry simulates the fire boat that was based at the ferry during the war with projecting jets of water.

Haying Military veterans will participate as will members of the COPP association together with the Royal British Legion, the

Hayling Army cadets and the Hayling Young Stars.

The popular music group Timeless will be playing 1940’s music and songs in the Ferry Boat Inn from 2130hrs.

At some time during the day, to be confirmed and subject to the weather, a flypast of three Spitfires from Biggin Hill will fly along Hayling seafront.

Due to the limitation on parking the public are advised to park in the council car parks at Beachlands where the City of Portsmouth Preserved Transport Depot will provide the former double decker Hayling Ferry bus to transport from outside the beachlands council office to the ferry and back from 1800hrs. onwards.

The whole event is being undertaken in memory of Major Sir Michael Parker the late producer of the Royal Tournament for over 25 years and the UK’s foremost pageant master.

Plans are under way for the fourth Big Green Week in June organised by Havant Climate Alliance & Havant Friends of the Earth but involving lots of other local groups.

The idea is to get people thinking about what they can do and send a message to show that local people really care about the linked issues of cutting emissions from oil and gas, protecting wildlife and tackling waste and pollution Can you play a part? Let’s celebrate what we are doing to

protect nature and our community and showcase the great work being done by local groups. We’d also like to look at growing and sharing food.

What’s on Havant Symphony Orchestra Spring Concert Sunday 10 March - Spring Concert, 2.30pm at Oaklands Catholic School in Waterlooville.

Our afternoon concert will start with Mussorgsky’s ‘Night on the Bare Mountain’.

Inspired by an ancient Russian legend of a witches’ sabbath in mid-summer, this exciting piece has been a perennial favourite for film scores, including Disney’s 1940 ‘Fantasia’, rearranged as Night on Disco Mountain for ‘Saturday Night Fever’ (1977) and most recently the 2022 film ‘Babylon’.

Cantemus Choir March 16th - Singers are invited to join Cantemus in an exciting Come & Sing event where they will rehearse and then perform John Stainer’s famous “Crucifixion”.

Taking place at St Mary’s Church, Hayling Island with registration from 1.30, a rehearsal at 2-4pm, followed by tea, then a concert performance at 5.30pm, tickets for singers are £12, and for concert-goers £6.

Conducted by George Haynes and joined by professional tenor and bass soloists with organist, Cantemus will perform this work with their guests and sing dramatic pieces by Ireland and Wesley.

Stainer’s “Crucifixion” is a well-loved oratorio based on the format of the Passions of J. S. Bach, and has been performed by

choirs, especially in this country, since 1887.

The Biblical narrative is interspersed with choruses, solos and hymns reflecting on the Passion story, as is most recognised through the hymn “All for Jesus, All for Jesus”.

Join Peter Eeles with his illustrated talk on the 59 species of butterflies considered resident or regular migrants. Monday 25th March - 1845 for 1930 *** At Boxgrove Village Hall, PO18 0EE – new venue *** ‘To (Gulf) War, as a pilot in the F-16’ Presented by Sqn Ldr Ed Smith, DFC, RAF (Retd).

Whilst on duty with the United States Air Force as part of the Officer Exchange Programme, Squadron Leader Ed Smith was deployed to the Gulf and participated in Operation Desert Storm in 1991.

He flew 26 combat missions and125 flying hours as a flight leader and air controller in daylight missions, attacking military installations and equipment, infrastructure and the Republican Guard deployed in Kuwait, opposed by surface to air missiles and anti-aircraft artillery.

background to the exchange assignment, talk about his training and preparation for war, and honour the people he worked with.

He will describe, as only a participant can, what it’s like to go to war and the joy and relief of bringing people home.

Monday 25th March - 1845 for 1930 ‘Experimental Test Pilot presented by Chris Taylor who joined the Royal Navy and since has flown over 400 types of fixed wing aircraft and helicopters and is also an established author.

After gaining a degree in Electrical Engineering he became a Navigation Officer serving on numerous ships and went onto operating Wasp and Lynx helicopters.

Chris became an Experimental Test Pilot who flew all manner of experimental aircraft for research and development purposes before joining the Empire Test Pilots’ School as a Flight Test instructor. He is a licensed Category 1 Test Pilot and Flight Test instructor for both aeroplanes and helicopters, which arguably makes him one of the best qualified and most widely experienced test pilots working today.

In this talk, Chris discusses some of the more challenging aspects of his time as a

flight test instructor as well as his work on a number of cutting-edge research projects whilst with the Experimental Flying Squadron.

Emsworth Art Group’s Easter Exhibition Emsworth Art Group is holding its Easter exhibition again this year. It will be open from Saturday 30th March until Easter Monday 1st April, from 10 am to 4.30 pm each day in the Emsworth Community Centre (behind the fire station) in North Street. (PO10 7DD).

The exhibition is always popular, because of the varied and high-quality work, the friendly atmosphere and the central position. Entry is free and light refreshments will be available. Most work is for sale and cards of paintings are always popular with visitors. The photos are from last year’s exhibition.

We meet every Wednesday morning at

the Emsworth Community Centre to share the working area to work with varied formats of painting. There are also some workshops and professional demonstrations.
