Havant Borough Talking News is a free service for Blind and Visually Impaired People from Janet turner

havant talking news is looking urgently for volunteers to help us produce fortnightly recordings of local news for our visually impaired, and often, lonely people in the havant area. small organisations like ours can make a big difference to the lives of our listeners, who often feel cut off from their community. havant talking news is run entirely by volunteers, and we know that our service is valued in the local community. what is involved? Briefly, you would be working with our news gatherers, bringing together pre-selected local news articles ready for a fortnightly recording session. we hope that the commitment would be around once every two months. we want to make the articles ‘listener friendly’ so some editing of the articles would be needed. time is not on our side as

postcode publications Stronger, More Flexible, Pain-Free Readers … tips and exercises from our award winning chartered physiotherapist there are many different causes of shoulder pain, the most common complaint we see is rotator cuff related shoulder pain. today we will be offering some advice, exercises, shockwave and stretches which are good for those suffering with shoulder pain. rotator cuff related shoulder pain (sometimes known as impingement) is more likely to occur in people who engage in physical activities that require repeated overhead arm movements.

Common symptoms include: • an arc of shoulder pain approximately when your arm is at shoulder height and/or when your arm is overhead.

• shoulder pain that can run from the top of the shoulder to the elbow.

• pain when lying on the sore shoulder.

• muscle weakness or pain when attempting to reach or lift.

• pain reaching for the seat-belt. here is a testimonial from one of our clients who had shoulder pain “after 6 months of not having full

• stand at end of wall or in doorway • place inside of bent arm on surface of wall and position the bent elbow at shoulder height • walk forwards and turn body away from positioned arm • hold for thirty seconds repeat twice, three times a day.

Squat + Shoulder Elevation with Theraband this is an exercise to start to strengthen the rotator cuff this should only be done once you have full shoulder movement and should be undertaken pain free.

• tie the theraband in a loop • push out with your hands with a static and constant pressure against the theraband • as you squat down (keeping knees in line with the second toe) you push out against the theraband and take your arms up above your head.

• repeat three times fifteen, two times a day.

• remember this exercise should be pain free.

Shockwave for Shoulder Pain what is shockwave? shockwave causes increased blood flow to the area as well as stimulating tissue at a cellular level leading to improved tissue regeneration. another benefit of shockwave is that it can provide a pain-relieving effect in some patients which can last as long as 4 weeks but is particularly effective during

Celestial beauty of Dark Night Skies

captured in national park’s astrophotography contest

an awe-inspiring starry night on the or the milky way, and it was shots of our south downs and a “towering super closest celestial neighbour that captured moon” are among the winners of this year’s the imaginations of the judges. the winner astrophotography competition. more than 100 entries were received for the national park’s popular cosmic photography contest and a judging panel has now chosen the winners across three categories.

Judging the contest were dan oakley, “dark skies” ranger for the national park, graham Bryant, a fellow of the royal astronomical society, and petersfield-based tiffany francis-Baker, author of dark skies. taking the top spot in the south downs dark skyscapes category was “snow in springtime” by neil Jones. the photograph shows the milky way in all its glory, arching above the beautiful st mary’s church, near upwaltham, in west sussex. runner-up was “valley of stars”, taken by michael harris, which shows a stunning night-time view of devil’s dyke, near Brighton. tiffany said: “i just want to dive into this picture – it really encapsulates the south downs national park for me.” in the living dark skies category, the judges crowned “stargazing”, by pablo rodriguez, as the winner. the mesmerising image shows a walker gazing in awe at the beauty of the star-studded sky at seven sisters. the final category had to capture the magnificence of the moon,

by Denise Kelly spring has sprung! wow-what an amazing number of sunny days we have had in march. it makes everyone feel alive again after the dark winter months and it’s just what we need to give us the incentive to start moving away from the higher carb comfort eating and start introducing more detox and energising foods that can create beautiful skin, manage weight and give you that well needed va-va-voom. this is the best time of year to spring clean your body, and its far simpler than you may think! so, if you have been feeling tired a lot of the time, get bloated, have a few extra belly pounds to shed, and feel like you could really do with a better night’s sleep and some balanced hormones then read on! there are so many ways you can gently detox the body, but one of my favourite things to do when i feel like i need a kick start is RAW TIL’ FOUR! when i say raw, i don’t mean meat or fish! i mean fruits, vegetables, nuts seeds and sprouted grains. it’s a sure way to get the whites of your eyes sparkling, your skin glowing, and your energy bouncing off the ceiling!

Basically, you wake up and eat nothing but fruits, nuts, seeds, sprouted seeds and vegetables. plus, you can drink water and herbal teas all day long! the idea is to eat your raw foods until 4 o’clock that afternoon, and in the evening, you can eat a good home-made healthy meal. preferably ditch the alcohol whilst eating raw (because

Recycling Isn’t Enough How You Can Help The Plastic Crisis from sally Brown – founder of eco-sal www.eco-sal.co.uk What is ‘The Plastic Crisis’? if you look around you, it’s scary to see how many things we use in our day-to-day lives that are packed in some form of plastic. it’s even more terrifying to think that less than 9% of plastics actually get recycled, so even when you think you’re doing the right thing by putting your rubbish in the green bin, it’s always better to try and reduce and reuse first. in 2020 alone, it was estimated that 24-34 million tonnes of plastic waste entered the world's lakes,

rivers and oceans, killing around 1 million marine animals. this is what is now known as the plastic crisis – we are literally drowning in our own waste!

How to Get Started firstly, start in one of the main rooms in the house – maybe the kitchen or the bathroom and write a list of all the things you can see in that room that contain or are packaged in plastic. then slowly work your way through the list, swapping each thing to a more sustainable alternative as

you run out. start with the easy things that aren’t a change from the norm like your kitchen sponge for example. this was a straight up swap and required no change of habit. don’t forget to use up what you have first! it defeats the object to throw away all your plastic bits and bobs that still have life in them and replace them with sustainable alternatives.

hampshire based charity stop domestic abuse visits local venues to raise awareness across our communities around international women’s day. stop domestic abuse celebrated international women’s day on the 8th march by joining the movement that supports this year’s theme celebrating women's achievements, raising awareness against bias and taking action for equality. to raise awareness of the impact of domestic abuse on women, stop domestic abuse hosted a variety of information events across hampshire. staff went to venues including havant’s meridian centre with pop up information stands encouraging members of the community to learn more about these topics, find out how to join the campaign to spread awareness, and to learn where they can go if they need some confidential advice. stop domestic abuse also joined forces with an orange illuminated spinnaker tower in support of the charitable cause and have been undertaking fun activities such as glass painting and tie-dying clothes across the seven refuges in the area.

international women’s day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. the day marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality. anyone but particularly women can be victims of domestic violencs. stop domestic abuse works tirelessly towards its ambition of a world without domestic abuse by campaigning and delivering direct services to affected victims and perpetrators. it is estimated that 25% of women experience domestic abuse and the number of police recorded domestic abuse-related crimes in england and wales rose 6% in the year ending march 2021 to 845,734 (source: ons domestic abuse in england and wales overview november 2021). stop domestic abuse ceo, claire lambon says: “we are delighted to be able to get out into the local communities and hold these information sessions highlighting the impact of domestic abuse on women. whilst both men and women may experience incidents of inter-personal violence and abuse, women are considerably more likely to experience repeated and severe forms of abuse, including sexual violence. the latest figures show that out of an estimated two million victims of domestic abuse in the last year, some 1.3 million

were women. the majority (70 per cent) of victims of domestic violence deaths are female. on average over 90 per cent of defendants in domestic violence court cases are male and over 80 per cent of victims are female. every week in the uk, two women are murdered by a partner or ex-partner. we do need to challenge cultural stereotypes which still assume that the perpetrators of domestic violence are men

and the victims are women. however, at the same time, we must recognise that the majority of perpetrators are men. we still live in a patriarchal society where men have more power, more sense of entitlement, and (on average) more income than women. to ignore the impact of gender on domestic violence does a disservice to people of any gender. if you live in hampshire and are experiencing domestic abuse, you can get confidential advice by calling the domestic abuse advice line on 03300 165 112.

Spring on your bike

you wake up to a lovely sunny day, the winter winds have died down, the frost is gone so you decide to take a ride on your bike. dressed as you normally do for a ride on your bike, you go to get your bike out of the shed, garage, or wherever it’s been all winter, and… oh no! the tyres are flat. not quite the disaster you might fear, because you probably haven’t got to mend two punctures. our tyre inner tubes are very good at keeping air in all the time we are riding but very often if they have been left unused for a long time some air gradually escapes, either through the rubber, or through the valves leaking a bit. whatever it is very often after a lay-off

the tyres have gone down and need to be pumped up. while you are at it, look at the side walls of the tyres. if they’ve been flat with the weight of the bike on them it means that the tyres have been folded and creased and may have cracks in the side. they will still be useable but over time, maybe several winters, the cracks could get worse and the tyre might fail before the tread has worn out. if you do a high mileage, the tyre will probably wear out before the side walls fail, so possibly nothing to worry about unless the tyre is years old. once you have pumped up the tyres which will only take a few minutes, check that the chain is not seized up.

if your bike has been stored in a nice dry shed or garage, and if you oiled the chain before winter set in, it will probably be ready to go, but if your bike has to live outside, even under a tarp. or cover of some kind the steel of the chain will have started to rust. it may only be surface rust, again it may still be ready to ride, but i have seen chains that have got ‘set’ in a tight curve where it has been round the gear wheels all winter without moving and the rust has bound the links into place. so, try turning your pedal wheel backwards, and feel if the links are free. if it is stiff to turn, and particularly if there is a ‘kink’ in the

chain you will use a lot of energy just trying to turn the pedals, let alone going forward. however, it may just need oiling and wiggling a bit to get it free. once you have got it moving, oil the chain again and turn the pedals backwards a few times then wipe off the surplus oil, and you should be ready to go. this will, i’m afraid, take longer than pumping the tyres, but not all afternoon. at last, you are ready to get on your bike, and enjoy the spring!

the south downs national park trust is announcing several schemes, including grants for schools across sussex, surrey and hampshire, funding for nature-based activities and a fun eco-art competition. it comes as the trust, the official independent charity for the national park, is stepping up activities in 2022 to ensure more young people than ever before can enjoy the south downs and connect with the amazing landscape, biodiversity and cultural heritage.

Julie fawcett, chair of the south downs national park trust, said: “nature needs us

now and that’s why all these initiatives are so important in the face of climate change. “young people are the future stewards of the south downs, and indeed our planet, and so it’s vital that we help them learn about biodiversity and how we can protect it. fortunately, young people are more naturedfocused than perhaps ever before and there’s a real appetite to get involved with climate action.

In March a group of Warblington School Sports Leaders were invited by Pompey In The Community to deliver a range of activities at Portsdown Primary School as part of their Inclusion Day. The activities were delivered by Warblington

students to a range of primary students across the school’s year groups. The adaptability of the leaders in their delivery was outstanding!

The Warblington Sports Leaders provided a diverse range of activities throughout the day including goalball, boccia, curling, blind football and amputee football.

In addition to this, they used their innovation and creative talents to put together an obstacle course for the younger students to complete in a competitive yet engaging manner.

The sports provided were all new to the primary school students and required our Sports Leaders to explain and demonstrate the tasks,

which were presented clearly to allow the students to engage.

The Headteacher, members of staff at Portsdown Primary and students, along with the Portsmouth In The Community staff were very complimentary of all of Warblington’s Sports Leaders and we are incredibly proud of them all and look forward to more events in the future. Their commitment to the programme and training has really paid off. Well done!

Saving saplings from The Avenue portsmouth water is supporting local volunteers to collect hundreds of young trees from woodland at the reservoir site, to be replanted locally as part of the havant thicket reservoir project. volunteers have been visiting the reservoir site and have collected around 250 saplings from the avenue woodland. the saplings have been planted into compostable pots provided by portsmouth water and placed in a safe area the volunteers can access to water them. later they will be planted locally in the planned mitigation and compensation areas for the reservoir. an additional nursery is also being created on site to home around 200 tiny

oak saplings which were grown from acorns gathered on site, mainly from the avenue. ruari maybank, project director, havant thicket reservoir, said: “i would like to say a big thank you to all the volunteers who have dedicated their time and energy to relocate these saplings. ensuring that the local environment is respected and enhanced is vital to the havant thicket reservoir project and i am very grateful for the support of our local community in helping us to achieve this together.” tracey viney - pictured right - who led the volunteer working parties, said: “more than twenty enthusiastic volunteers from the communities to the east, west and south of the reservoir site, as well as from further afield came to help. we were all passionate about relocating as many young trees as we could from the avenue woodland. it is great that some of the genes from the trees that will be lost have been saved to help create new and enhanced woodland areas for local wildlife.” as part of the havant

thicket reservoir project, portsmouth water has developed an extensive environmental mitigation and compensation package which includes creating and improving more than 200 hectares of woodland and wood pasture. large-scale habitat restoration will be undertaken within havant thicket woodland, Bell’s copse and on portsmouth water owned land in staunton country

THE CAT & RABBIT RESCUE CENTRE hello from your favourite out and about reporter at the cat and rabbit rescue centre, hulky Bear. sadly previous month’s pets of the month sweet peanuts and toffee Bonbon are still here and looking to find their forever home. a few weeks ago, the staff unfortunately found a lump on sweet peanuts which our vet is unable to operate on. however, he is still a happy boy at the moment and we are hoping he will be able to live out his days in a nice home soon. i told you how we took in eighteen cats from a home where the owners had too many and couldn’t cope. i just wanted to update you and let you know that the centre did take in another five male cats from the home. however, i am happy to inform you that nearly all the cats have now been rehomed. this is except for our lovely soon to be mum cat coco Bean who is due to have her kittens any day now.

over on our facebook page we are following coco Beans journey through motherhood and my staff will update everyone when she has had her babies. if you would like to see how many kittens she has and to see how they grow please do follow us on our social media pages. we’ve been raising money to make some much needed improvements to our mum and baby unit that will help with ventilation in the unit and will keep all the mums and kittens healthy and happy before they go to their forever homes. paws crossed we will have soon raised enough to make these changes. we also recently took in another ten cats and seven rabbits who were being kept in horrible conditions. these animals were part of a large operation by another rescue and in total they rescued over 50 cats that were kept in cages in a cupboard. these cats did have a few ongoing medical conditions especially with their eyes and they are all a little nervous. thankfully, they are all doing really well now and we hope to be able to rehome them soon.

PET OF THE MONTH PUGSLEY this month we would love to introduce you to pugsley. pugsley is a very handsome ten year old black male cat. he has been with us at the rescue since november as his owners were moving to a property that did not allow pets. he did originally live with cats but he was a bit mean to her so we had to make the decision to split them. pugsley is a very confident and friendly boy who loves to have a fuss made of him. he will come straight up for a stroke and will be rubbing around your legs for lots of attention. he is also very playful but occasionally he can get a little bit carried away and can nip but he doesn’t mean to be nasty. he also does

stansted park farm shop apprentice presented with national award by hrh the princess royal at london prize-giving event it’s national Butchers week, so we thought we’d highlight our fantastic awardwinning butchery team that keeps our local community supplied with the finest cuts of meat around! it’s the perfect time to introduce our butchery apprentice, sarah, who recently won ‘Best new apprentice’ at the institute of meat awards. sarah porter, an apprentice with stansted park farm shop near rowlands castle, was named Best new apprentice at

the institute of meat (iom) and worshipful company of Butchers annual prize-giving, held at Butchers hall in london, on 24th february. sarah, who competed against apprentices from around the country has been working with stansted park farm shop since last year. she was presented with her certificate of achievement by hrh the princess royal, past master of the worshipful company of Butchers and

fellow of the institute of meat. she was also awarded a cheque to the value of £250 and a years honorary membership of the institute of meat. sarah joined the stansted park farm shop butchery team as she wanted a change from her career as a communications manager and had always wanted to learn butchery. she brought a superb customer orientated manner, a passion for food and cookery and a knowledge of where food comes from to the farm shop butchery counter. in return, she has been learning whole carcass butchery alongside the farm shop’s two master butchers, lee harmes and ray treagust. sarah said “i feel completely honoured to have been awarded ‘Best new apprentice’ by the iom. to have achieved something like this so early in my apprenticeship is such a huge encouragement and i’m excited to continue my learning to see what the future brings. thank you to my tutor, henry martin at plumpton college and lee harmes at stansted park farm shop for their support and guidance” fred duncannon, co-owner of stansted park farm shop said “we were extremely fortunate to have sarah join us as an apprentice, as she already had a wide range of skills and knowledge from her previous career. she is quickly developing an excellent rapport with our customers

and is friendly and knowledgeable. she can now develop her butchery skills alongside our hugely experienced butchers, while learning about the local provenance and quality of hampshire and sussex meat and game.” stansted park farm shop celebrates 10 years in business this year, having moved into new premises in 2017 with a butchery counter that offers the full range of local meat and game, including 30-day aged beef, lamb, hogget and mutton, wild estate venison, and fantastic free-range pork from storrington. with whole carcass butchery, sarah is learning about every cut, as well as quality, provenance and traceability, showcasing the best meat that sussex and hampshire has to offer.

Monday 23rd May - 1845 for 1930 hrs ‘the royal international air tattoo riat - the fun and the challenges’. presented by mr tim prince inspired by squadron leader Jack currie dfc raf, a small team of volunteers staged an air show at north weald aerodrome in 1971, in support of the royal air forces association (rafa). to ensure that it would stand out from the numerous other annual ‘air shows’ in the uk, they called it the ‘air tattoo’. it was a success with the participating aircrews enjoying the energy and enthusiasm of the volunteers, the spectating public happy with the exciting flying with aircraft from far and wide. it is

now the ‘royal international air tattoo’ and in its 50th year. tim prince, who has been part of the riat’s story since 1971, will share some of the many stories about this important annual gathering of the world’s military aircraft and aviators. tim will bring audio videos to show the audience, as well as many photos.

giving dYnamo Youth theatre back faith in the ‘oliver’ production! following the hugely disappointing last minute cancellation of dynamo youth theatre’s production of ‘oliver!’ in early January, due to a covid outbreak, the talented young company were finally able to perform in the alternative venue of st. faith’s church. dyt are indebted to the huge generosity of canon tom kennar and all the st faith’s community, for allowing us to use the church, in what has been a very difficult couple of years for the company. not surprisingly, the transition from the wide stage area of the pallant centre to the much more confined space at st. faith’s church was not without its challenges. most of the scenes had to be repositioned by the cast, while much of the original scenery had to be significantly modified.

Don’t stop Wining GREECE IS THE WORD

Jonathan looks at the modern wine industry of this classic. in the past many people from outside of greece have thought that the country must be to too dry and hot to make quality wines, but discovering which varieties are suited to climates and soils is the fundamental foundation of quality wine production. the success of quality wine production in greece over the past few decades is not due to solely sticking to imported grape varieties we see everywhere, although these are certainly grown, but on concentrating on their own indigenous varieties. some of these grapes can trace their origins back to ancient greece, the foundation stone of wine production as we know it.

Back in the mid 80’s a new breed of wine makers, fresh from their studies in france, returned to create this modern wine making epoch we know today. along with a cash injection from the eu and some individual wine producers with long term ambitions, enabled them to plant smaller wineries in areas where the land was cheaper and to develop the larger negotiants with state-of-the-art machinery. the local grape varieties, mainly white, are grown in various regions of greece and many of the islands. peloponnissos, the southern peninsular has seen the most change and upgrades in terms of production. in the north of the region, they produce some fine white wines from the roditis grape. this is the principal variety although the lagorthi grape and mavrodaphne are both building fine reputations. naoussa in the north of the country is the most important region in the country. it was the first to be developed in 1971. although many wineries are still ill equipped, they produce some fine reds, some say reminiscent of Barolo in italy. the winters here are cold but in summer irrigation is permitted due to the excessive dryness.

Wild Garlic Salsa Verde • 1 tbps white wine vinegar • 4 wild garlic sprigs chopped (or basil) • 2 flat-leaf parsley sprigs chopped • 2 garlic cloves crushed • 2 anchovy fillets chopped • 2 tbps capers • 200ml extra virgin olive oil

Instructions 1. preheat the oven to 220°c/gas mark 7.

2. start with the marinade: place the olive oil, red wine vinegar, garlic and rosemary in a small bowl, season with salt and pepper and mix together well.

3. place the lamb, skin-side up, in a roasting tin and pour over the marinade. rub the marinade into the lamb and leave to sit for at least 30 minutes until the lamb comes to room temperature before roasting.

4. roast the marinated lamb for 40 minutes. (or grill on the BBQ over medium heat

for 15 minutes each side, until internal temp is 63ºc for medium rare.

5. while the lamb is roasting, add all the ingredients for the salsa verde to a bowl and mix together thoroughly.

6. remove the lamb from the oven, cover with a loose covering of foil and leave to rest for 15 minutes.

7. thinly slice the roasted lamb onto a warmed serving dish and spoon the salsa verde down the centre of the lamb. serve.

a blanc de noir (made from the red grape Xinomavro but without the skin contact, only using the white juice). a lovely vibrant balanced wine with great ageing potential.

Cemetery Dig Reavels Site of St Faiths Mortuary following an application to localgiving’s “magic little grant” friends of havant cemeteries have been awarded a grant. friends of havant cemeteries group has always taken an interest in the historic aspects of havant’s

cemeteries at eastern road, and many readers mayl have visited and read the information boards and enjoyed the self-guided walks the group has provided. there are really three cemeteries at the site: the two old cemeteries, the dissenters’ and st faith’s in new lane, in use from 1851, and the municipal cemetery where burials began in 1895.

Burial plans exist of the dissenters’ and the municipal but none can be found of the st faith’s section. in 2020 two group members began an attempt to draw up a plan and in the process became interested in the location of the chapel which once stood in the centre of the plot (there was a larger chapel in the municipal section, too). an idea of its approximate location

can be gleaned from the 1909 os map but if you stand in the cemetery you can clearly see a roughly circular area with no headstones. hampshire archaeological dowsing group carried out a detailed survey in february 2022 which has shown where the chapel stood, how thick its walls were, and even where the altar stood. instructions from the dowsers indicated exactly where to dig, and to great excitement diggers exposed part of the foundations. it is hoped that a way can be found to leave a section of brickwork visible to visitors. in the next few months planting will be carried out to mark the chapel’s corners and altar, an information board erected and a new self-guided walk will give visitors greater detail of the project’s findings.

as the warmth of spring sunshine bathes the south downs, thousands of new life-giving trees are sprouting up from the soil. it’s been a busy few months because well over 11,000 trees have been planted across the region – on top of 10,000 trees planted during the previous winter. now the inspiring initiative, called “trees for the downs”, is putting out the call for new applications for even more tree planting in 2022. applications are welcome from landowners, farmers, parish and town councils, schools and community groups in the national park. the call-out comes after a tremendous public response to the trees for the downs campaign, which launched three years ago. so far, almost £200,000 has been raised by the south downs national park trust, the official independent charity for the national park, which has set its sights on raising £260,000 to be able to plant 100,000 trees in total.

the tree planting is restoring those lost to pests and diseases, including ash dieback and dutch elm disease, as well as creating new habitat for wildlife and amenity value for local communities. the trees will be a mixture of disease-resistant elm trees and native species, such as oak and black poplar. sites include schools, farms, recreation grounds and historic parks. the trust is working with the national park authority’s woodlands team to deliver the project. sonia lorenzo martín, woodlands lead for the national park authority, pictured left said: “we’ve worked really hard with partners this winter to plant all these new trees and are excited to plant even more later this year. to find out more about making an application for trees for the downs, visit: www.southdownstrust.org.uk/trees-for-thedowns/ the deadline for applications is 15 may and the trees will be planted between december 2022 and february next year.

Samuel Whitebread and Early Photography in Havant

the one name that is invariably associated with photography in havant is william scorer who established himself in the photographic trade in 1890. however on the 1861 census we find one charles hoad listed as a ‘tailor and photographer’ residing in west street. hoad, however, was primarily a tailor so it is clear that for hoad photography was little more than an occasional sideline and no photographs taken by him are known to have survived. the honour of being the first specialist photographer to practice in havant therefore must go to samuel whitebread, who sets up

whitebread. as mary is not wearing a wedding ring these photographs must have been taken before their wedding day on 23 september 1882.

in business in 1880 in west street. havant murder case. in april 1881 he placed later he moved to 20 his first advertisements in south street, where one the portsmouth evening of his daughters, edith, news offering his assisted him in his services as a business; she being photographer in what described on the he called his west end 1891 census as being studios. a ‘photographic only a very few of his printer’. when she left photos survive. apart from to get married another percy knight searle and robert husband the two cartes de visite daughter, laura, took her there are two others, those of percy knight place and on the 1901 census she is searle and robert husband, respectively the described as a ‘photographic re-toucher’. victim and the accused in the infamous she must have been rather more than

just this however for it was she who took over the business when samuel died in 1904 at the age of fifty eight. she appears in a 1907-8 trade directory as ‘miss l. whitebread. photographer, 20 south street’, but she cannot have remained in havant for very much longer as she is not listed on the 1911 census.

But why did she leave havant sometime between 1908 and 1911? it may be that with william scorer now firmly established as the town's principle commercial photographer she felt that she could no longer compete with him - especially as a single woman.

Highway Code Changes last time i wrote about the changes to the highway code as it affects cyclists and, of course, other road users. the opening section is about the hierarchy of users and this is nicely illustrated by this cartoon from cyclinguk. whilst the biggest and strongest owe a duty of care towards those nearer the top of this pyramid of road users, we all owe a duty to ourselves and others not to put ourselves into danger. for example, the pedestrian who steps into the road without looking, or the cyclist who shoots out from a side road. the code specifically states that ‘people on foot, bike, or horse still have to have regard for their own and other road users safety’ Junction Priority rule h2 (you don’t have to remember these numbers) simplifies 14 previous rules which sometimes conflicted each other and sets out who should have priority at junctions without traffic signals. it makes clear that riders and drivers at junctions should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross a road into which or from which you are crossing. of course, two

this means that as motorists or cyclists we have to be aware of users of such tracks, even when they are separated from the highway. its just as true for cyclists turning left, they have to give way to pedestrians waiting or already crossing a side road, or for other cyclists coming up a cycle track beside them. people standing at the roadside chatting may not mean they are waiting to cross, but we should be ready to give way if they suddenly finish their conversation and decide to move. rule h3 explains that drivers and motorcyclists should not cut across cyclists, horse riders or horse drawn vehicles going ahead when the driver is turning into or out of a junction or changing direction or lane. this applies whether they are using a cycle lane, a cycle track, or riding ahead on the road.

Dangerous overtaking and close passes rule 163 gives clearer guidance on how much room drivers should give when overtaking. leave at least 1.5metres (about 5 feet) when passing at speeds up to 30 mph, and more at higher speeds. take extra care and leave more space when overtaking motorcyclists, cyclists, horse riders and pedestrians in bad weather including high winds. motorists should wait behind the

postcode publications a donation hub collecting humanitarian aid for the people of ukraine is set up in the meridian shopping centre, havant. to help support refugees, the centre will be collecting essential items including good quality clean warm clothes for women, teenagers and children, over the counter medicines (aspirin, paracetamol, ibuprofen, codeine, calpol), nappies, wipes and other essential baby items, sanitary items, toothpaste and toothbrushes, deodorants, shampoo, soaps, towels, sleeping bags and blankets. dried, packet or tinned food with at least six months expiry date on them will also be welcomed before trucks ship the donations direct to moldova to help and support those in need. operations director wayne keeping at stella’s voice said: “the

situation looks set to become europe’s largest refugee crisis this century, and we are responding as quickly and effectively as possible. “people in ukraine and those who have fled to neighbouring countries are relying on international aid and the generosity of strangers around the world, just to get the basic necessities.”

emsworth arts trail springs into action as it returns this april/may! the emsworth arts trail is returning to its traditional spring dates with 85 artists taking part in venues across the town, it promises to be a real celebration of emsworth’s vibrant and diverse art scene. the trail began in 2001, with just ten artists exhibiting in their home studios. since then it has grown to include an exciting range of local artists, drawing artloving visitors from far and wide. last year saw 60,000 visits recorded to venues over the two weekends. some artists open their homes and studios, to provide a unique insight into the way they work and a relaxed atmosphere in which to chat and view their art. others group together to exhibit in community spaces, pop-up galleries and local businesses, offering visitors the opportunity to view several artists in one venue. the result is a creative and colourful journey around emsworth; a vibrant, community-wide event!

“the emsworth arts trail has become a key event in our town’s calendar” said carol price, the event’s chairperson… “we really are a strong community of artists, with new exhibitors always welcome. there are 10 new artists joining us this year”, added carol. “there is always something to excite and delight; the emsworth arts trail has certainly put the town on the map as a destination for art.” with the majority of venues located within a mile of the town centre, visitors often make a family day out of it by walking, cycling or scooting along the trail. some brave souls even undertake the challenge of visiting all the artists on the trail! as well as the art venues, visitors can explore the picturesque harbour, the shops and of course enjoy refreshments in one of emsworth’s many coffee shops, pubs and restaurants.

the printed trail guide is available in shops around emsworth now, and includes a map so you can plan your visit. there is a wide variety of work on show – painting, printmaking, photography, textile art, wood, ceramics, jewellery, glasswork and sculpture! there is something to interest everyone.
