President JOe Biden’s lOcAl BreWerY heritAge? could it be true that President Biden’s Westbourne family heritage is connected with gosport’s old Biden’s Brewery? according to local historian Jenny Bishop: “it could be that there is some truth in the theory that his ancestors came from ‘southbourne’, although it is to be remembered that southbourne did not exist at the time of the historical record so his ancestor could not have come from there. it was of course all the parish of westbourne, from the river ems eastwards to chidham (parish of Bosham) including thorney and prinsted.

his third great-grandfather was baptised at westbourne church, where he also married a local girl. i would say this puts him in westbourne rather than southbourne. there was no church in southbourne until 1876, the first vicar came in 1878, there were churches like racton, idsworth, thorney, only a chapel in hermitage and prinsted.” see story on page 8

the newly formed staunton park men’s shed officially opened its doors on 1st June. the founder members are indebted to tim speller, msc hnd (agric) dip m, the country parks Business manager for both staunton and Queen elizabeth country parks, and to cllr david keast who assisted us enormously in finding the premises. men’s sheds are voluntary organisations that attempt to provide workshop facilities for individuals, in this case, for within havant and the surrounding area, to undertake jointly or

individually, creative, physical and recreational activities that benefit both themselves and the local community. it is primarily, though not exclusively, aimed at older men, who are often lacking the opportunity to use skills leant over a lifetime, and have limited social activity once retired. they can use the workshops, tools and equipment to undertake projects, learn or pass on skills and knowledge, and support each other socially.

Alan Mak MP hosting inaugural havant constituency Prayer Breakfast no matter your faith, it’s important to take breaks from our busy lives for periods of reflection.that’s why i was delighted to recently organise the first ever havant constituency prayer Breakfast in partnership with st. faith’s church in havant. normally the national parliamentary prayer Breakfast is hosted in westminster hall but this year the event was livestreamed to groups across the country, who came together to share breakfast and join in prayer. it was wonderful to be able to share the event with fellow christians and local church leaders, who offered prayers to guide the work of parliamentarians and our local councillors who also joined me for the event. it was also a chance to recognise the work done by our church leaders throughout the pandemic, many of whom have contributed by leading community groups. as part of the national event, we heard from christian parliamentarians, as well as the former Bishop of durham,tom wright, who spoke of the need for hope and unity as we recover from covid.

By bringing people of all political persuasions together in prayer, it also reminds us of our common purpose and the shared faith which binds us together. i hope that is a common message we can all share as we

come out of the pandemic. recently, i also opened the leigh park Bowls club’s new clubhouse. incorporating a full bar, a new hospitality area and panoramic windows which overlook the bowling green, leigh park now has some of the finest bowling facilities in hampshire. having looked round the refurbished club, i’ve seen what a brilliant community asset it is, helping the club to grow in the years to come. if you know about any other exceptional organisations in the constituency, you can nominate them for my re-launched constituency small Business and community awards. the new staunton park men's shed has joined the national men's shed association and will also work with numerous other men's shed already established in the area. the founder members are currently establishing the workshop facilities, building work benches. and installing tools and equipment already acquired. we also have a kitchen facility, toilet, and storage areas. we welcome new members and aim to be open five days a week available on

OUR PUBS - THE PRINCE OF WALES

the prince of wales pub is situated along west street close to Bedhampton railway station. the pub was for many years associated with brewing in havant. the pub itself was probably built close to around the middle of the 19th century but the present building may have replaced an earlier beerhouse on the site. an advertisement for a sale on the 3rd november 1853 at the dolphin inn, havant records: a copyhold dwelling house, situate in the west street, havant, known by the name of the “prince of wales,” now in the occupation of henry elliott, at a yearly rental of £13. two years earlier, in the census of 1851, James veal, a widower of 35, and recorded as a beer retailer, is occupying a property in west street, with henry elliott and his family as lodgers. it is unclear if this was the same

property but various beer retailers are recorded in unnamed properties in west street until the new prince of wales public house came into being. like the white hart at the corner of north and east street havant, the prince of wales is another fine example of victorian public house architecture with its green glazed brickwork. from its opening in about 1867 until closure in 1922 the brewery attached to the pub produced beer for the neighbourhood for over fifty years. originally, the brewery was under the control of the davey family with thomas t. davey probably the first licensee of the new public house. later the public house, along with brewery, came under the control of sutton Bros. of chichester and finally Biden & co. cygnet Brewery until the closure of the brewery in 1922. until its demolition to make way for modern housing the brewery buildings were used by the home service laundry and initial industrial cleaning, both making use of the brewery’s old well. one of the more colourful landlords of the pub was frederick Bullock, who held the licence from before the first world war until about 1930. frederick’s brother, Billy (charles) Bullock, was a prominent jockey of the day and won both the derby and the oaks.

McLaughlin visited the defendant’s house the Prince of Wales, Havant and there purchased three quarters of rum for 1s. 3d. from a “little barrel in the corner”. He told the defendant that he wanted the liquor for analysis, upon which he remarked that “he

would find it pretty good”. On one of three samples, however, being forwarded to the public analysis at Southampton it was certified as being 29% under proof, or 4% below the recognised standard. The defendant alleged that he had made a mistake in reducing the liquor. He was fined 5s. 6d. and 23s. 4d. costs.

legion. like many businesses the covid-19 pandemic had an enormous impact on the way we operated and our trade. in the first lock-down of spring 2020 we were forced to close for a period. during this time we reorganised ourselves into two teams each of two people and bought the necessary ppe ready for opening.when we could open, the two teams kept the trading centre running on sundays only.the number of people allowed into the shop area was restricted to one person at a time and the use of masks and hand sanitiser was required. our thursday duties for re-stocking and general management also ran with a limited team of two people. once we were open, trade was very brisk. lots of people had found solace in their gardens during lock-down and there was a great demand for composts and seeds particularly. fortunately we have a very good relationship with our main suppliers and we were able to maintain healthy stock levels to satisfy the demand. after the first lock-down our normal staff rota was reintroduced and things were back to “normal” with our sales remaining at a high level. it was noticeable that quite a

few new members joined the hihs at the trading centre just to be able to buy our products. when the second lock-down started to take effect the trading centre was closed for the winter period. although the shop was closed until the end of January there was a lot of maintenance work taking place mainly in the shop area. all the shelves were completely stripped and cleaned and at the same time the walls and other items were painted. a new display cabinet, funded in memory of a late member, was constructed. the work was undertaken either by individuals or a maximum of two people and was all completed by the opening at the beginning of february. we have all become used to the use of masks and social distancing and that is how we have continued trading. the supply of stock has been a problem at times. companies have had to adopt social distancing and that has impacted on their productivity leading to shortages. there has also been a problem sourcing items from china, suddenly you realise how we have become reliant on manufacturing

from outside sources. these issues have led to shortages in compost, tools, plastic items such as watering cans and products in spray bottles. however, throughout all of these problems, with the help of our excellent staff, we have managed to increase our sales from previous years through the increased demand by our customers. the volunteers themselves enjoy the opportunity to be part of this venture and there is the opportunity to meet and chat with fellow helpers and visitors to the shop and learn more about gardening. if anyone is interested in getting involved, just pop in and have a chat.

grind out the honey fungus in your garden dealing with the destructive effects of honey fungus in gardens is now one of the most frequent call out tasks for stump grinding specialists with owners facing no real alternative in how to deal with control of the disease honey fungus, also known as armillaria mella, is a highly destructive disease in the gardens of the uk. honey fungus spreads through the roots and soil, killing perennial plants and then

decaying the dead wood. how to spot honey fungus honey fungus is the common name given to several different species of the fungus that attack and kill the roots of many woody and perennial plants. the most characteristic symptom of honey fungus is white fungal growth between the bark and wood, usually at ground level. clumps of honey coloured toadstools sometimes appear briefly on infected stumps in autumn. honey fungus can attack many woody and herbaceous perennials. no plants are completely immune, but there are some that are only rarely recorded as being affected. dead and decaying roots, with sheets of white fungus material (mycelium) between bark and wood, smelling strongly of mushrooms. this can often be detected at the collar region at ground level, and more rarely spreads up the trunk under the bark for about 1m (3¼ft). this is the most characteristic symptom to confirm diagnosis upper parts of the plant die. sometimes suddenly during periods of hot dry weather, indicating failure of the

root system; sometimes more gradually with branches dying back over several years. the fungus often means smaller, palerthan-average leaves there also follows failure to flower or unusually heavy flowering followed by an unusually heavy crop of fruit (usually just before death of the plant) how to control honey fungus there are no chemicals available for control of honey fungus. if honey fungus is confirmed, the only effective remedy is to excavate and destroy, by burning or landfill, all of the infected root and stump material. this will destroy the food base on which the rhizomorphs feed and they are unable

to grow in the soil when detached from infected material.

Preparing for re-planting the area the most effective way is to leave the area fallow for six to twelve months. this will starve the fungi with no new food source. also make sure to cultivate regularly to reduce the chance of its survival. another option is to replant the area with grass but this isn’t as effective and without risks compared to leaving fallow. when replanting instead of using trees and shrubs, plant shorter lived plants , but avoid using strawberries and potatoes which are highly susceptible.

we hope you found our exercises for the first six weeks following your knee replacement surgery or while you are waiting for a knee replacement in our last article useful. what exercises should i do six weeks after my knee replacement surgery or if i am still struggling with pain, stiffness and weakness following your total knee replacement? some patients we see have been given basic exercises to do but limited guidance about how to do them, how many to do and how to progress on when they feel easy. we sit down with every patient to discuss goals, what they want to be able to achieve, then we provide a full assessment looking at movement, strength, balance, we also look to see if there are any areas of muscle tension/tightness. here are some exercises to do six weeks following a knee replacement. please be aware of your body and take advice from your gp before exercising or send an email to (enquiries@physio-logical.net) for advice and guidance. when exercising do not push into sharp pain.

Knee exercises - 6 weeks post-

operative Quarter squat: hold for 5 seconds repeat until your muscles feel tired.

• Begin this exercise on both feet and perform a small knee squat keeping your knees over your toes.

• gradually place more weight on your affected leg until you can perform this on one leg.

• once a day Balance: hold for 15-20 seconds. repeat 10 times.

• stand on your affected leg with your knee slightly bent.

• try to keep your balance for 15-20 seconds • progress by standing barefoot on different surfaces e.g. carpet/pillow • do this with your eyes closed when you find it easy • once a day Knee extension: repeat until your muscles feel tired.

• sitting in a firm chair • slowly straighten your leg hold for 5 seconds and then lower the leg.

• once a day

side step up: repeat until your muscles feel tired.

• start on a book or a 4 ½” step.

• place your operated leg on the step side on.

• push up and straighten your knee.

• Bend your knee over the toe to lower down.

intrOductiOn while many people do not want to consider the implications of getting older or, even less, dying, these are unavoidable events and it is important to plan so that our nearest and dearest are not left with a mess to untangle.

Wills in the uk, it has been estimated that three in five uk adults have not written a will. the main excuse we hear is that “the missus gets it anyway”. even if this is true, writing a will makes the whole process much easier as there is then a written authority for someone to deal with your assets rather than having to go through the convoluted process of gaining approval to act as personal representatives for your estate.

POWer Of AttOrneY it is also sensible to make a power of attorney to authorise trusted individuals to act for you if you become incapable of conducting your own affairs. it is important to understand that the power of attorney needs to be made while you have mental capacity as leaving it too late means that, again, it will be necessary for the relevant individuals to apply to the court of protection to act as your representative. there are two “lasting power of attorney” (lpa) documents to consider. one is to empower individuals to act for you in connection with your financial affairs and the other is to make health decisions on your behalf. it is possible to complete the financial lpa on its own rather than complete both.

please also be aware that the lpa does not mean you yourself cannot make your own decisions. the attorney can only act once you lose the capability of acting yourself. liVing Will you may wish to set down in writing the sorts of treatment you would want in certain circumstances. this would cover medical resuscitation, organ donation and other such matters. inheritAnce tAX if the value of all your assets is likely to exceed £325,000 (the “nil-rate band”), you should consider taking professional advice as to your inheritance tax position and anything that can be done to improve this. as with wills, many people leave this too late so it is best to seek advice as soon as possible.

Biden’s BreWerY Joseph Biden's parents, mary elizabeth (née robinette) Biden (1894–1943) and Joseph harry Biden (1893–1941) an oil businessman from Baltimore, maryland, were of english, french, and irish descent.

Biden's paternal third great-grandfather, william Biden (1789–1849) was born in england and emigrated to the united states, where he settled in maryland. according to historian eddy greenfield, he was born in sussex, and christened at st John the Baptist's church, westbourne on

8 march 1789. william was the second child and son of James Biden (born november 1767) and ann silverlock (born march 1766), who had married on 16 may 1785. James Biden - Biden's paternal fourth greatgrandfather, was from pagham. he was the son of richard Biden, Biden's paternal fifth great-grandfather, and his wife susan, beyond which the paternal family line, cannot be traced.

Biden & co. ltd, seahorse Brewery, seahorse street, gosport, hampshire was founded in 1800 and the brewery built in 1822, was acquired by James Biden in 1825. the brewery in seahorse street built in 1800 was acquired by James Biden in 1846. in 1888 Biden & co bought a controlling interest in the havant Brewery co. ltd, prince of wales Brewery, west street, havant, hampshire. in 1918 the brewery was purchased for the sum of £115,000 by sir william dupree of the portsmouth united

Breweries. for a while the brewery became a small dairy, then it was used as a store. it was demolished around 1972, along with the seahorse pub, which adjoined the brewery.

Brickwoods were the last owners of the seahorse, a pub which dated from the

17th century. the only building to remain in seahorse street, belonging to Bidens is the master Brewer's house, which has a preservation order on it.

after a number of leader changes and some avoiding action needed as a huge ship passed close to the fleet. day 3 saw the wind increase to 15-20 knots with v26 danny winning the first race and just losing the lead in the second race to v32 holly. afterwards it transpired that v26 danny had completed the second race with a broken mast which required some swift action early the next day to pick up a spare mast from itchenor! v68 sky took the

first win on in the 5th race in 12-17 knots of wind with v70 minty second and v26 danny third despite their early start and re-rigging of a new mast. race 6 started with a three-mile long beat to south Bramble which v18 polly lead for the first half but was overtaken by v32 holly and v70 minty just before the windward mark. tactics in the strong tides was crucial to the results of this race which saw v32 holly win ahead of v12 argosy. with just one race on the final day, the overall result was still very much in doubt. strong tides meant some of the fleet overstood the windward mark and the final result was decided by a match race between v26 danny and v32 holly with the

overall regatta win at stake. a former world champion in the international 14 dinghy class, martin summed up the week commenting that it been some of the closest and most enjoyable racing that he and vicky had enjoyed for a long time, which was made even more special by racing in such historic boats. such was the closeness of the racing during the week that five different boats won at least one race and the top 6 boats were divided equally between the traditional wooden and newer grp hulls, although the first two boats were wooden.

the clanfield water incident hedgerow heroes campaign Photography competition cpre hampshire, the countryside charity, are behind a new campaign to help save the humble hedgerow, acknowledging the vital contribution hedgerows make to the health and diversity of our countryside, and even our climate. the photography competition, open to all ages, is part of the celebration of the role hedgerows play in our everyday lives. a defining feature in the landscapes around us for over a thousand years, hedgerows are often undervalued. in reality, they are the unsung heroes of the countryside, playing an enormous role in providing pathways, shelter and sustenance for wildlife, as well as protecting the soil, cleaning the air and absorbing carbon emissions. hedgerows are the most versatile nature-based solution to climate change we have to offer. since 1945, we have lost half our hedgerows, intensifying nature's decline and hindering the fight against climate change. cpre hampshire is determined to help in turning this round by drawing attention to the important role hedgerows play, as well as undertaking projects around restoring and planting. they are already working on an ambitious project in the south west of

hampshire to restore and plant hedgerows on the meyrick estate, involving two local schools, the local young farmers and a team of volunteers.

Boyd mccleary, cpre hampshire vicechair said: “hedgerows need our help. around 50% of this country’s hedgerows have disappeared since the second world war and many more have been seriously degraded or are otherwise under threat. through our work with hedgerows, we are hoping to demonstrate their value and bring their plight to many more people.” the cpre hampshire hedgerows photography competition is your opportunity to submit photographs that capture a hedgerow moment, whether it’s part of the landscape, a close up, the plants, the wildlife, the roots or the leaves. it might be sad, funny or uplifting. there are four age categories and you don’t need to be a professional or experienced photographer - anyone and everyone can enter. meanwhile, as part of a national campaign, cpre hampshire are pushing for government to set a target to increase the hedgerow network by 40%, by 2050 at the latest. this means over 4,000 miles of new and restored hedgerows every year.

access to water during a heatwave is something most of us in the local area are fortunately able to take for granted. however, when a water main burst on sunday 18th July, the hottest day of the year, residents and businesses in clanfield were left in a state of upheaval.around half of the village had no water supply or very low water pressure between 8:00am and 3:30pm, and some households went without for longer.the clanfield centre, which reopened on 8th June, was lucky enough to have water supply despite the burst water main. upon becoming aware of the problem facing the village, the centre team wasted no time in inviting people to the centre via social media. centre manager, natasha glover, said “we were more than happy to support the local community and help in any way we could. some families came in to buy bottles of water, and many people did this for pets.a lot of people came in asking us to fill up their bottles of water for family members, pets and neighbours.we are so glad that we were in a position to help, and relieved to know that the issue is now resolved for most households!” having a local place to access water without having to travel out of clanfield was crucial for many residents. natasha recalled,“my mum was at a local convenience store at around 10am on sunday and due to the burst water main, they had already ran out of bottles of water at this time! an elderly gentleman was very upset as his

Don’t stop Wining greece is the Word Jonathan rogers ofVin Wine Merchants in emsworth looks at the how wine making in greece is moving forward. some of us of a certain age will remember that old favourite from greece retsina. produced around athens in the atika region from the sevatiano variety, it’s still the most widely planted grape in greece. But fast forward thirty years and rest of the wines of greece are astonishingly good. it has started to build up an international reputation in producing quality wines, not from the likes of the well-known grapes that we find everywhere (although they do grow them) but from indigenous varieties which will be able to trace back their origins to ancient greece and the home of modern wine life as we know it. most of these grapes are white, and producers know which ones will cope with the heat and the dry weather conditions, and this had led to the success today they are enjoying. the principal varieties include roditis, muscat, mavrodaphne and debina which makes both still and lightly sparkling wines. there are wine regions dotted around the whole country including the islands, but its northern greece that has the most potential to grow further. the appellation of noussa in the macedonia region is the most important, producing reds from the Xinomavro variety. the growing season is long producing wines with exquisite aromas full of quality. the wineries though are still poorly equipped but producing excellent wines. the area that has seen the most exciting change in the country is peleponnese. its greece’s best known wine region due to the beautiful coastline and the sheer number of historic sites frequently visited by national and international tourists. the area of patra in the north of the region produces some very fine white wines, mainly from the roditis grape. another variety that is heading up the change is the legorthi variety which produces wines with a light fresh mineral character. greek wines are worth exploring and the many indigenous varieties make it an exciting wine discovery.

croutons, nuts, and seeds offering a contrast to leaf and veg, and it’s the perfect solution to any stale bread. dice up the bread into small squares and toast in a frying pan, adding herbs, garlic, or melted cheese and then there’s the visual mix, with a tomato kaleidoscope to choose from, chargrilled peppers, and the blues, reds, and yellows of borage and nasturtium flowers to contrast with the leafy greens. for the dressing, follow the simple rule of vinaigrette: 3 parts oil to 1 part vinegar (or lemon juice). there is an incredible range of oils and vinegars to choose from, alongside ready-made vinaigrettes from the condiment co, cold pressed oil company, and the garlic farm. so make sure to give your lettuce a lift and get inspired with local produce.

APPrenticeshiP fund Pledge a new pledge from a regional cooperative has led to further funding being available for small, local businesses to boost apprenticeship activity across the solent, raising the total figure to £1,375,000. southern co-op has become the latest organisation to join a growing list of supporters of the solent apprenticeship hub's ‘transfer to transform' initiative. transfer to transform encourages large employers to pledge their unspent levy funds to cover the costs of apprenticeship training for smaller businesses. southern co-op, which operates food, funeral and coffee services across the south of england, has pledged £50,000 to the initiative to boost the regions smes and apprentices. linda masterman, diversity & inclusion manager at southern co-op, said: "it's really important that we all come together to support each other as we recover from the impacts of the pandemic. "two years since we started offering apprenticeships, more than 80 of our colleagues have taken up the opportunity so this is a great initiative enabling smaller

companies to offer similar benefits to their own employees." southern co-op is the eighth largest employer to pledge support to the transfer

to transform scheme and join other employers such as B&Q, utilita, exxonmobil, coopervision and more. over £1m of the £1,375,000 raised has already distributed to smes across the solent region.

love at first sight for the latest addition to the solent sunbeam fleet

An impressive 22 solent sunbeams ventured from chichester harbour to cowes classic Week, making them the second largest fleet at the event and the class’s largest turnout at the regatta since its inception in 2008 v68 sky took the first win on in the 5th race in 12-17 knots of wind with v70 minty second and v26 danny third despite their early start and re-rigging of a new mast. race 6 started with a three-mile long beat to south Bramble which v18 polly lead for the first half but was overtaken by v32 holly and v70 minty just before the windward mark. tactics in the strong tides was crucial to the results of this race which saw v32 holly win ahead of v12 argosy. with just one race on the final day, the overall result was still very much in doubt. the sun came out but the light winds led

to a long delay until finally a 12-15 knot breeze filled in. strong tides meant some of the fleet overstood the windward mark and the final result was decided by a match race between v26 danny and v32 holly with the overall regatta win at stake. v32 holly managed to hold off v26 danny at the finish and took the regatta win by just two points.v70 minty held off v68 sky for third place. congratulations go to martin & vicky Jones in their newly acquired and very beautiful 94-year old sunbeam,v32 holly. a former world champion in the international 14 dinghy class, martin summed up the week commenting that its been some of the closest and most enjoyable racing that he and vicky had enjoyed for a long time, which was made even more special by racing in such historic boats. such was the closeness of the racing

Who are we and what do we do? u3a is open to anyone who is no longer in full time-employment and those who have retired. hayling island u3a is organised into interest groups, providing the facilities to bring likeminded people together to enjoy new and interesting pastimes and social events. hayling u3a has been running since 2006 and has just over 400 members. there are plenty of opportunities for members to make new friends, learn and laugh. there are no age restrictions and our members come from all walks of life.

our activities are split into different interest groups. currently we have over 50 groups covering creative, physical and cultural subject areas, where members can develop both old and new interests/ hobbies.we normally also organise trips to various venues both locally and further afield. many groups have been suspended since march 2019 due to covid, but with the covid rules now being less restrictive many of our groups are up and running again. sample of the interest groups are: • computer - we help and encourage members to make better use of their computing device for whatever interests them. 10am on the first tuesday of each month.

‘NUmbER Up’ FOR OLd BEdhAmpTON HERITAGE? . the government set out national requirements in emerging local plans for councils to identify a rolling five-year supply of new housing supply, and havant Borough council received its allocated requirement. however, it was not possible to demonstrate to a government planning inspector that such land was readily available due to the limitations of the Borough boundary. this gave a government planning inspector reason to give the go ahead for a developer’s twice refused planning application on appeal for fifty houses on land at lower road, Bedhampton, within the setting of the old Bedhampton conservation area. the inspector confirmed the proposal was contrary to the emerging local plan 2036 and felt he could give only limited weight to the emerging plan, which identifies the site only as a housing possibility. despite this draft allocation, the council unanimously refused a developer’s planning application despite following

national guidance. the inspector judged that the harm would not outweigh public benefits.

Bedhampton heritage alliance (Bha), supported by a petition of over 1,700 residents. the inspector considered a catalogue of residents’ concerns and gave them his weightings.these included exacerbating highway issues, losing protected wildlife habitats and intrusion on the historic rural coastal landscape setting of the conservation area.

Bha wanted to help the council fulfil their guardianship duty to protect and enhance the environment for the benefit of future generations. the appeal decision however, focused on the local shortfall of planned new housing with only a 4.1-year supply identified.

the south downs national park photo competition returns for 2021, with a first prize of £250 on offer to the amateur or professional photographer who best captures this year’s theme of “nature makes me happy”.

Judges will be looking for uplifting images that capture the beauty of the natural world – whether that be landscape, wildlife, rivers and coastline, woodland, a piece of history, or people enjoying the national park. the broad theme could also cover those “happy places” in the south downs that replenish the soul. the top prize for the adult category will be £250, with a runner-up prize of £150, third prize of £100 and fourth prize of £50. the youth competition returns this year for budding young photographers – with categories 10 years and under and 11 to 17. there will be a prize of a family pass to marwell Zoo for the 10 years and under category, while the prize for 11 to 17 category will be a family pass for a forest segway outdoor adventure ride at go ape. award-winning photographers rachael talibart, finn hopson and carlotta luke also return to the judging panel. nick heasman (pictured), countryside and policy manager at the south downs national park, who chairs the judging panel,

But the three ells i am thinking of are the three words in the alliterative university of the third age (u3a) logo – ‘learn, laugh, live.’ the logo describes what the movement is all about and challenges preconceptions of what being an older adult means. the ‘learn’ and ‘laugh’ of the logo are easy to explain. the u3a is structured round interest groups aiming to learn something new or extend their learning but in a social way allowing members to make new friends and enjoy themselves whilst learning. the ‘live’ in the logo is less obvious. of course members live, but the point is to improve lives, so as a trekkie might say ‘to live long and prosper’. learning something new is believed to help with mental well being.

Belonging to a group and being valued for

your contribution can dispel loneliness and engender self confidence. some interest groups have an element of physical exercise, to maintain muscle mass, improve agility, balance and well-being, thus helping us live well for longer. adrian wakeford, a member of emsworth and district u3a is trying to start a sea shanty singing group, which will draw on all these principles. participants will learn together some of the history of the songs, learn the lyrics and have a good laugh while getting to grips with singing them. turns can be taken at being shantyman, the lead singer, who sings the verse followed by everyone joining in the chorus. the physical act of singing should be stressreducing, be good lung exercise and just simply good fun. if you are in your third age and have some ‘ells you would like to leave behind, whether your interest is sea shanty singing or something else, look at the emsworth u3a website www.emsworthu3a.org.uk the range of interest groups includes ambles and pub lunches, cycling, yoga and pilates, creative writing, language learning, discussion groups, garden and theatre visits and many more. emsworth u3a welcomes new members and encourages members to start groups, if they have an interest they would like to share or take up in a supportive and friendly environment. gill, the membership secretary on 01243 389983 can also give you more information.

final straw is back cleaning beaches, and needs your help! emsworth-based environmental charity the final straw foundation called on volunteers to get involved as it celebrated its first official beach clean up post-covid. over 55 volunteers attended final straw foundation’s beach clean on 5 June 2021, world environment day, on hayling island, spread out along around two miles of shoreline and footpaths. in just over two hours, in blazing sunshine, families and children collected

EMSWORTH ARTS TRAIL RETURNS IN SEPTEMBER

2021. artists and venues are planning to ensure that the event takes place in a covid-secure manner. “last year was a tough year for the arts, emsworth arts trail is back for 2021 and we are so pleased to be returning this with a new date in the calendar! there is extra reason to celebrate the return of the year, breathing life back into emsworth’s fantastic arts scene,” said carol price, the trail this year- it’s 20 years since the first emsworth arts trail. with 95 artists taking event’s chairperson “we like to think of ourselves as a part in venues across the town, it promises community of artists, with new exhibitors to be a real celebration of emsworth’s always welcome. there are 15 new artists joining us this year”, added Barry sutton Barry carol. “there is always sutton something to surprise and fascinate; the emsworth arts trail has certainly put the town on the map as a destination for art.” over the last 20 years visitor numbers have grown and grown, with art lovers arriving from far and wide. the 2019 event saw 99,000 individual visits recorded over the two weekends. the trail includes many local businesses and community venues; artists and makers exhibit their work in shops, halls, pubs, sailing clubs, home studios and

hayling island community centre receives vital donation the hayling island community centre association (hicca) received financial support from Barratt homes and david wilson homes – just in time for the postpandemic recovery. the hayling island community centre association (hicca) is crucial to the community as it has been home to hundreds of social groups, fitness classes and life and employment advice to the residents of hayling island for over 39 years. when the pandemic hit, funding became critical as all these activities, which were the lifeblood of the organisation, had to be cancelled in line with government guidance. at one point, without financial assistance, hicca started to worry about its future as they faced the prospect of not surviving until its 40th birthday on 24th July. now, the community organisation has received help via Barratt and david wilson homes’ community fund scheme, which donates £1,000 to worthy causes in the

region each month. iona harkness, the centre manager, is over the moon that hicca has been the recipient of this monetary lifeline from Barratt and david wilson homes. she said: “during the covid crisis, we have only been able to generate a very small portion of revenue from a few weeks of room hire, which meant we were facing the very real possibility of having to close the doors permanently. “this very generous donation from Barratt and david wilson homes will make a hugely positive difference to the future of our centre, and to the groups that use it on a regular basis. “we have all learnt about the damage isolation can cause over recent months and

our centre is here to bring the community back together. we want to secure this vital facility for the residents of hayling island.” hicca provides a wonderful support for the community, and when Barratt and david wilson homes heard about the difficulties the organisation were facing, they had to step in and offer their help. tammy Bishop, sales director at Barratt homes and david wilson homes, southampton division, said: “after we heard about the challenges this community charity was facing during the pandemic, we had to help. “the hayling island community centre is a community hub, and this kind of facility is even more important now after 18 months

CRAFT BEER - Cans vs Bottles

Beer tastes better in a bottle?

Myth! - Breweries put the exact same beer into bottles as they do in cans. Preconceived ideas however can be a strong factor in the opinion of cans. If we go back a number of years before the craft beer revolution the only beer you could get in cans would be from big corporate breweries which lets face it was not great. Its no wonder why you might be put off drinking anything in a can! These days however there is an amazing choice of beer in cans... Thank goodness!

What about that tinny taste?

All modern cans are lined to prevent any flavour contamination. You could perhaps get some sort of taste drinking direct from the can but its best practice to pour the beer out into a glass.

Cans keep beer fresher?

True - Cans keep light and oxygen out which can damage beer giving it an off flavour. Some hops are light sensitive and when exposed to light through glass photo oxidation takes place giving it a skunky flavour.

Brown bottles are better but still do not eliminate light exposure.

Bottle caps do a good job at sealing but over time they do let

some oxygen in. This can affect the flavour of the beer.

Hoppy beers in particular do not do well however for some styles such as Belgium, sours and barley wines bottles can be advantageous to help age and improve the flavour. Cans double seal the lid on top ensuring that no oxygen can get in.

Which is better for our planet?

Materials Aluminium cans require mining the mineral bauxite which can destroy habitats and contribute to soil and air pollution. A lot of energy is then required to refine it into aluminium.

Glass is made from silica, sand and limestone which are quarried.

Iron, sulphur and carbon are added to make the glass brown. It is much less energy intensive to create glass than it is to create aluminium which takes 15x more energy.

Doesn't sound great does it but hear me out. It only takes 8% of the initial energy to create a new can out of a recycled can.

Transportation Cans are much lighter meaning it takes less energy to transport them around reducing carbon emissions.

They also take up less space reducing cargo loads.

Recycling Both can be recycled but cans are often much easier to recycle than bottles. This can be seen in the UK where 72% of cans are recycled compared to 67.7% of bottles.

Both bottles and cans can be recycled indefinitely.

The packaging is a major part of the environmental impact of the life cycle of beer. 42% for cans and 55% for bottles so its a very close call but cans come out slightly on top when you take in all the factors.

Why we changed to cans We used to bottle condition our beers but moved to cans to help keep our beer as fresh as possible.

Our IPA SkIPA could taste amazing two weeks after bottling but would age too quickly losing hop aroma and taste. Cans allow us to put out a more constant product.

Space is at a premium at the brewery so cans allow us to make the most of the space we have. We would need two pallets of bottles for the same amount of cans on one.

Brewery updates New tanks have arrived however this has caused a delay in getting our brews out. We should hopefully have our own beers available by the end of August at the latest. Keep an eye out on Facebook and Instagram for updates.
