warBlinGton scHool oPeninG uP it was great to welcome back all our staff and students to the school after such a long absence and as you would expect there was excitement, anticipation and some nerves which were soon dispelled after catching up with friends. the school had been covid testing all the staff, throughout the lockdown, who were in looking after our keyworker students, but this was ramped up to include testing of all students at least 3 times as announced by the government. as you can imagine the students showed how mature they could be throughout the testing process and we finally completed our mass testing on wednesday

24th march. its estimated we have completed over 2500 tests! now it’s down to the parents and carers to assist the students with their home testing kits! our year 11 students started their ppe’s (gcse mocks) which continues for three weeks. this process is critical for their final teacher assessed grades for their final results. ‘i would like to say a massive well done to our year 11 students for their mature approach to their ppes that started last week (friday 12 march).you literally hit the ground running as you started your exams days after

alan mak mP Keeping up the pressure on southern water we’re fortunate our area is a popular area for visitors and those involved in sailing, walking and water sports, and i want to keep it that way. that’s why i’ve been keeping up the pressure on southern water to reduce stormwater discharges into langstone and chichester harbours. stormwater releases are designed to prevent homes and properties from flooding during periods of heavy rainfall when the capacity of the system can be exceeded. however, a combination of climate change bringing significantly more periods of intense rainfall, alongside more surface water entering into combined sewer systems, has meant increasing use of these overflows, especially during the winter months. i’ve been campaigning on this issue for several years, and there’s positive news to report. the government’s storm overflows taskforce – made up of defra, the environment agency, ofwat, consumer council for water, Blueprint for water and water uk – has set a long-term goal of eliminating discharges from storm overflows. following this, the government has now announced that measures to reduce sewage discharges from storm overflows will be put into law. i’ve lobbied for these changes having supported the objectives of the similar sewage (inland waters) private members Bill. recently, i met southern water ceo ian mcaulay to put pressure on the company to meet these new government targets, which include a duty on water companies to publish data on storm overflow operation on an annual basis. while the infrastructure cost to eliminate

stormwater discharges would be high, we spoke about practical solutions that could make a difference such as making homes more wastewater efficient. southern water also confirmed it will publish a plan setting out how it will meet the government’s long-term target.

But the goal of eliminating stormwater discharges is one that will require wider collaboration which is why i will be expanding my work on this issue by launching a new regional forum. this will bring together key invited stakeholders from across our region to work with southern water to improve local water quality. this new forum will build on the work already achieved by my hayling island environment forum over the last two years, such as getting southern water to improve its Beachbuoy notification system. don’t forget, if you know somebody that has helped with the vaccination effort you can nominate them for one of my coronavirus community hero awards. recently we had the fantastic news that over 40,000 adults in the havant constituency have now received the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine, around 1 in 2 people. so if you know anyone that has been volunteering at a vaccination centre or has been helping with any other aspect of the coronavirus response visit www.alanmak.org.uk/heroawards to nominate now. i hope that everyone stays safe and i'll continue to provide regular updates to my email newsletter subscribers. if you wish to subscribe for updates, visit: alanmak.org.uk/newsletter

no longer in full time employment and living on Hayling? then hayling u3a could be for you! never heard of u3a? then read on to find out more about this organisation that brings together like minded people in a variety of different activities. u3a is an international organisation, with over 1,000 uk u3a groups up and down the country. it is open to any adult who is no longer in full time employment and those who have retired. there are is no age restriction and our members come from all walks of life. the organisation provides the opportunity for members to enjoy new and interesting activities, pastimes and social events where you can meet new friends, learn and laugh. hayling u3a has been around for 15 years and is a thriving and vibrant organisation where you can meet people with similar interests. we have almost 500 members and our activities are split into different interest groups. currently we have over 50 groups covering creative, physical, and cultural subject areas. we also organise trips to various venues both locally and further

afield. at this time many of our group meetings have had to be suspended but some are still taking place online using Zoom or other similar media options. (don’t worry if you have never used Zoom before, we can help you get started.) in addition to our interest groups, hayling u3a has monthly meetings where members get news updates and hear speakers on a variety of subjects. a free cup of tea or coffee is included, which gives an opportunity to chat to other people afterwards. these meetings take place on the third thursday of the month starting at 2pm at hayling island community centre. currently these monthly meetings are suspended due to covid restrictions but we are successfully holding these via Zoom.

support available for Businesses Planning to reopen as restrictions ease, the road to recovery will present many challenges for businesses. in this article we give a brief summary of the government funding which you may be eligible for as you plan your reopening in april. post pandemic, ‘business as usual’ will be a term that will take on a new meaning as businesses adjust to ‘the new normal’. now is the time to consider what changes you need to make ready for reopening, where you can make savings and how this will affect your cash flow. having a financial forecast to get your business up and running again will be essential. cash flow is the lifeblood of every business and keeping track of your incomings and outgoings will help you stay in control of your financial position, foresee any potential problems and gaps in the availability of cash.

coronavirus Job retention scheme – extended until 30 september 2021 the government will pay at least 80% of employee wages up to a maximum of £2,500 a month. employers will be required to pay the national insurance and pension contributions for each employee. from July 2021 employers will be asked to contribute 10% of the cost, rising to 20% in august and september 2021. self-employment income support scheme - ends september 2021 the grant extension will apply to the newly self-

employed who have filed a tax return before midnight on 2 march 2021. those whose turnover has fallen by 30% will continue to receive the 80% grant. those whose turnover has fallen by less than 30% will receive a 30% grant.

Grant four: february to april 2021. applications will be open from late april.

Grant five: from may onwards. the fifth grant will be open from late July. the government has extensive advice on eligibility for the scheme which includes an eligibility checker on their website:.gov.uk/business-coronavirus-support-finder recovery loan – deadline 31 december 2021 the recovery loan will replace the cBils and cBBl schemes. Businesses of any size can apply for loans from £25,000 to £10m through to the end of this year. the government will provide a guarantee to lenders of 80%. applications open from 6 april 2021. vat rate reduction of 5% for businesses in the tourism and hospitality sectors – extended until 30 september 2021 following this, an interim rate of 12.5% will be in place for a further six months with the standard rate of 20% returning in april 2021. you can check if your business is eligible for the temporary reduced rate at: gov.uk/guidance/vat-reduced-rate-for-hospitality-holidayaccommodation-and-attractions

W E LCO M E BAC K Almost 100% Attendance As Students Return Monday March 8 was a special day for Park Community School as it was the day we started to welcome back all of our students. The return was staggered over three days so that we could ensure the safety of both students and staff. A programme was put together so that students could safely return to their learning as fast as possible and teachers were full of pride at the way students have adapted to a stange new routine.

Students were taught to self-administer a Covid-19 test, first under supervision at school and then subsequently at home. Lateral flow tests will produce a result in 30 mins. Mask wearing and social distancing is in place while indoors to reduce the risk of infection.

Despite the ‘strange’ experience facing many students still in their first year of secondary school, students have adapted remarkably well, according to assistant head Jamie Bryce, who has been coordinating the testing. He said: ‘Behaviour has been great. None of the children have kicked up a fuss about it. I could not be more proud of them.’

And the first day showed that students were keen to return to the classroom, with a near 100 per cent attendance record, according to headteacher Chris Anders. He said: ‘That’s showing a high commitment to coming back to school.

‘It makes a change to our experience before Christmas. In the week before the Christmas break, our attendance was about 60 per cent. This was a combination of a lot of children being unwell or isolating – but half of these absences were due to concerns that it wasn’t safe.’

Despite concerns about infection clusters in schools, Park Community School has seen less than 10 cases so far in 2021. Up to 185 children of key workers attended in-person teaching during the latest lockdown.

With more than 900 students at the school, the parents of just 30 students requested that their children not be tested.

For 12-year-old Ryan Jennings the test was not a welcome addition to the school day – but it was made more bearable with the promise of brighter days ahead. He said: ‘I’ve been tested before – it almost made me sick. But it’s good to get tested to stop Covid. ‘This last year has been rubbish – It’s been so boring stuck indoors. ‘We should have a big party when this is all over.’

Year 10 & 11 students attended a virtual Havant Youth Conference with Mrs Norman, along with seven other schools.

Some excellent presentations by Mayor of Havant Prad Bains, presentations by Citizens Advice on Money Matters, Global Economy, Cyber Bullying and Fake News.

Park Community School students were offered the opportunity to enter a competition to name a Memorial Woodland in Havant, as part of their remote learning during the most recent lockdown.

We are delighted and very proud to announce that the entry put forward from Year 7 Students Sophie, Lexie and Joey, to name the new Memorial Woodland, was selected and it will be named Memory Park - such wonderful news!

“A tremendous day! The students were engaged, grateful for the opportunity and an absolute pleasure to be with. Josie, Harvey , Shauna lee, Jenni, A'layah, Fox, Kurtis, Ella and Katherine were amazing and the confidence and maturity they demonstrated was amazing.” Miss Norman

Memory Park has been created as a tribute to those who serve in the two World Wars and other conflicts, and to provide a quiet place for local people to visit, in particular to remember family, friends and others who have passed away.

Students said, “We’re so proud our idea has been picked for the new woodland, as this was a unique chance to name a special place that our community can use and enjoy for decades to come. The name Memory Park reflects the quiet and tranquil environment of the woodland. It also encourages visitors to spend time reflecting on the past and the present, humans and wildlife.”

Gardening Article from the Hayling Island Horticultural Society

april and may are busy times in the garden and the more preparation you do now will reap rewards throughout the summer. at this time of year we are all well into the routine of regularly cutting our lawn’s. there is a view, however, that we should maybe consider the impact of this on wildlife and the environment. we all enjoy the appearance of a neatly cut lawn but some leading gardeners think we should consider our options. some suggestions are leaving a small area uncut or maybe cutting attractive pathways through the longer grass or leaving circular areas of longer grass. however, if you enjoy a well cut lawn now is the time to do some work to achieve this by raking up dead grass and then applying a spring lawn feed to boost growth. as spring bulbs die back, deadhead the flowers but leave the foliage to wither so it nourishes the bulb for next year. any bare areas of garden can be sown directly with seeds of hardy annuals to give a splash of colour into autumn. rake over the soil to create a fine surface before you sow the seeds. to improve your existing borders mulch them with either some garden compost, leaf mould or your own homemade compost. if you have been busy germinating your own seeds, your window sills and greenhouses will be full of containers with developing seedlings. once the danger of frost has passed, these can be planted out but in the

meantime, pinch out top leaves to promote bushy growth and try to put them out during the daytime to harden off. if you have too many, see if you can share or swap with friends and neighbours. any shrubs in your garden could now benefit from some attention. prune back any pure green leaves on variegated shrubs such as privet and euonymus and remove any unsightly frost damage by cutting back to healthy growth. roses will get off to a good start by applying a rose feed followed by a mulch of around 5cm of garden manure. some vegetables can now be planted outside in the ground or in containers. Beetroot, cabbage, carrots, cauliflowers, strawberry runners and sprouting broccoli are just a few examples. ensure that the soil has been dug over to leave a fine finish that resembles bread crumbs, and is free of weeds and large stones. as we move into may you can plant out more, but check the growing instructions for each individual plant. this is an exciting time in the garden and everyday you will see new signs of growth. take the time the enjoy what is now popularly called ‘green therapy’! visit our website www.hihs.org.uk which has been completed redesigned and has a great new look. it is full of information about the society and gardening information.

for many of us in lockdown Britain our gardens have become a source of solace. never have we had so much time to tend to our borders and lawns. there is nothing nicer than a well-tended lawn, with a clearly

giving the bees, birds and butterflies a better chance in life.you will be reducing carbon, helping climate change, cleaning the air and enhancing the local character of your neighbourhood and giving yourself and your

defined stripe through it.

But this may i am asking if you could leave your lawn as untouched as your own head of hair. research undertaken by wild flower charity plantlife discovered that the highest production of flowers and nectar were on lawns cut every four weeks, whilst longer, un-mown grass had a wider range of flowers. daisies, clover and bird’s-foot trefoil are superbly adapted to growing on mown lawns producing large numbers of flowers every few weeks. if these flowers are cut off by mowing, it stimulates the plants to produce yet more flowers, boosting nectar production. may is such an important month for wild flowers and the pollinators that feed on them. if we all left our lawns un-mown for four weeks in may, our lawns could produce ten times more nectar than if they were mown every week. so whether your garden is big or small, if you are able to leave a patch un-mown and keep the rest short by mowing just once a month you will be rewarded by the greatest diversity of species. park your mower this may and make a difference. if you have heard of this campaign, then you are already a hero.you are going to be

5. cut again in august/ september, remembering to remove the cuttings again and repeat next year for bigger and better results.

earthworms are extraordinary creatures now seen as one of the most important animals on the plant whose influence is affecting more that just our humble gardens. when charles darwin was asked to pick what he thought was the most important animal in the world, his choice may have surprised a few people. he didn’t choose one of the earth’s impressive and dramatic creatures- he chose the earthworm as the most significant creature on earth and called it ‘nature’s plough’- opening the soil up with air and nutrients to make it more fertile and rich. in recent years more researchers have identified how critical earthworms are not just in our everyday gardens but to our entire ecological system. research projects now look at the role of earthworms in restoring polluted or degraded farmland. the earthworm had taken centre stage.

But for gardeners they have always been a joy to behold. earthworms are great for the soil in your garden because they’re known to: Bury and shred decaying plants plant and crop residue are buried by worm castings deposited on the surface. earthworms use these plants as food which they transport from the surface into their burrows. as the earthworms consume organic matter and mineral particles, earthworms poop out castings. earthworms can move large amounts of soil from the lower strata to the surface. they can also carry organic matter down into deeper soil layers over periods of time. a large amount of soil progressively passes through earthworms’ guts. it’s believed that they’ll turn over the top six inches of soil within two decades. improve water-holding capacity By breaking apart organic matter, earthworms loosen the soil and increase water-holding capacity.

loosen the soil and make it porous earthworms enhance porosity as they move through the soil. some species make permanent tunnels deep into the soil. these tunnels can last long after the earthworm has died. this helps with soil drainage, especially during heavy rainfall. simultaneously, the tunnels minimize erosion due to surface water. the horizontal burrowing of other species increases overall drainage as they loosen the soil.

Provide channels for root growth the tunnels made by the burrowing earthworms have available nutrients from their castings. this makes it easier for roots to penetrate deep into the soil. increase the soil’s microbial diversity earthworms get their nutrition from microorganisms like bacteria and fungi. however, there are more microorganisms present in worm castings than in organic matter. as the matter goes through their intestines, it’s fragmented and inoculated with microorganisms. the increase in microbial activity aids the cycling of nutrients. it transforms them from organic matter to forms readily taken up by plants.

earthworms –the facts • if you cut an earthworm in half, does it make two? it is a common misconception that if you cut an earthworm in half it makes two new worms. the common earthworm will generally survive having a bit of its tail end cut off and may even grow a new tail but chop an earthworm anywhere near the front end and it will kill it stone dead as this is where the major organs are.

• as darwin wrote "there are few animals which have played so important a part in the history of the world than the earthworm." they are a natural way to maintaining soil structure and fertility as they aerate the soil, improve drainage and bring nutrients to the surface. these actions help support the ecosystem services that soil provides.

• no one is exactly sure how many earthworms there are in the soil but recent estimates suggest that good quality soil can have up to two million earthworms per acre • earthworms are so sensitive to light that just an hour in daylight leaves them paralysed.

litter or crop residue. an earthworm's digestive system runs through the length of its body. earthworms themselves, are an important source of food for plenty of creatures, including hedgehogs, foxes, moles, many birds, slow worms and amphibians • how many species or types of earthworm are there in your garden? in the uk we have 27 species, 10 of which are commonly found in agricultural soils and these can be grouped into three ecological types: • surface dwelling earthworms (epigeic earthworms) don't make burrows but live on the surface of the soil – often in leaf litter and in compost. they rapidly consume the compost material and reproduce very quickly. they are usually bright red or reddish-brown, and the compost worms in particular (known as brandling or tiger worms) are often stripy.

• shallow burrowing or topsoil earthworms (endogeic earthworms) are pale coloured - pink, grey, green or blue and make horizontal burrows through the soil to move around and to feed. some can burrow very deeply in the soil.

• deep burrowing earthworms (anecic earthworms) are the most common.they are the largest species, often reddish brown, and they make permanent vertical burrows in soil.they feed on leaves on the soil surface that they drag into their burrows.they also cast on the surface, as often seen in grass.they make middens (piles of casts) around the entrance to their burrows.

postcode publications stronger, more flexible, Pain-free readers … tips and exercises from our award winning chartered physiotherapist Have you had or are you waiting to have a total Knee replacement? today we will share with you some exercises to do if you are waiting to have a knee replacement or have had one within the last six weeks. my name is natalie march from physiological, a chartered physiotherapist in stansted park, rowlands castle and horndean. at physio-logical we feel privileged to have been invited to get out covid vaccinations. as front line healthcare providers it provides a little bit of extra protection. however, we still remain vigilant in following our strict covid guidelines for all clinic appointments and continue to offer virtual appointments as well. we have been helping lots of new patients who are struggling to access hands on nhs physiotherapy services. we are still offering face to face physiotherapy appointments, wearing full ppe within our covid secure physiotherapy clinics we hope you found our exercises for plantar fasciitis in our last article useful.

what exercises should i do immediately after my knee replacement surgery or if you are waiting to have a total knee replacement? we have been seeing more and more patients coming through our private physiotherapy clinics in stansted park, rowlands castle and horndean, who are struggling with pain, stiffness and walking after having a knee replacement or while they are waiting for their knee replacement surgery. some patients we see have been given exercises to do but limited guidance about how to do them, how many to do and how to progress on when they feel easy. we sit down with every patient to discuss goals, what they want to be able to achieve, then we provide a full assessment looking at movement, strength, balance, we also look to see if there are any areas of muscle tension/tightness. here are some exercises to do immediately following a knee replacement or if you are waiting for surgery. please be aware of your body and take advice from your gp before exercising or email us for advice and guidance. when exercising do not push into sharp pain.

Knee exercises static Quads • sitting straightbacked, or lying down.

• tighten your thigh muscle and hold for five seconds, repeat ten times, three times a day. inner range quads:

• lying flat or sitting up.

• with the knee supported on a towel in a bent position • pull toes up towards you, squeeze thigh and straighten the knee.

• hold out straight for 5 seconds, repeat x 10 x 2, 3 x day Knee flexion:

• lying on your back or sitting • Bend your knee up hold for 10 seconds • repeat 10 times, 3 x day

Knee extensions: • sitting in a firm chair.

looKinG at walls!

on my walks around havant in the hour allowed us for exercise, i have become more and more fascinated by the building construction which can be seen in our town. i have admired the ‘rat trap’ bond brickwork in richard and carol acworths’ grove road garden wall and delighted in finding heavy stone hidden away just off east street which i have been told has most likely come from the demolition of warblington castle. one exciting find was when keith in davies the chemist showed me the huge stones in the shop’s inner walls which are hidden behind the display counters. their origin is quite a mystery. some years ago david Bone, a local amateur geologist, surveyed the outer walls of st faith’s church. there are sixteen different types of stone used in its construction which reflect repairs to the building, the additions and rebuilding which have taken place since the saxon church was replaced in the twelfth century. there have been several major reconstructions, the very biggest one which is known about, during the 1870s when the whole of the west end was remodeled and the church was closed. the variety of stones which are used are typical of a church in the west sussex/hampshire coastal plain. caen stone which is found, is likely to represent reused demolition materials from earlier construction. this would have been transported by boat from normandy. Bath stone came by rail from various quarries in the cotswold area during victorian times. the most abundant stone in the church is from Bembridge. its use ranges from fragmentary rubble to large ‘ashlar’ building blocks. it is likely to be of saxon

or medieval origin. this freshwater limestone has fossil shells within it and pin prick sized holes can be seen where the fossilized bodies of chana, a stonewort, have fallen out. these stones would have been transported by boat from the north and east coast of the isle of wight (the Bembridge ledges).other fossils can be found in purbeck marble which is packed full of small freshwater shells. this stone would have originally been part of a polished stone altar or grave cover. it can be polished but it is really a limestone and comes from the isle of purbeck. sometimes broken portland stone gravestones can be seen and roman bricks are slipped in as inserts between other stones. there is so much to be found from just looking around.

local risinG snooKer star havant’s 16 year old Jamie wilson has fulfilled his ten-year dream of becoming a professional snooker player.

Jamie, the cuestars gold tour member, has worked hard to earn a minimum of two years on the world snooker tour. he gained his right to join the world tour in the third and final Q school event at the english institute for sport in sheffield.

Jamie admitted he was stunned to achieve his ambition and to follow in Billy castle’s footsteps at such a young age. he told us:“i’m still in shock. it’s such an amazing feeling.i entered Q school for the experience and i never expected that outcome so i was under no pressure. it’s nuts.” a remarkable run of six straight victories kicked off with a 3-2 success over newly relegated professional michael georgiou, the 2018 shoot out champion.

filled with self-belief, the talent from havant went on to beat James Burrett 4-0, luke simmonds 4-2, dave finbow 4-3, fang xiongman 4-3 and haydon pinhey 4-3. that is four deciding frame victories, including one on the final black against former professional finbow. wilson, who first picked up a cue aged six, competed in the junior section at copnor snooker club and joined chandlers ford snooker club at the age of seven. it was there that he won the eastleigh & district under-13 premier title a year later. he has been based at waterlooville sports Bar since his mum and dad, suzy and steve, opened the club in september, 2016. the teenager paid half of the £1,000 Q school entry fee from prize money he’d won playing snooker and pool over the past year.

Causes benefit from co-operative fundraising as a new pot of funding opens for applications, co-operative colleagues in hampshire are celebrating their successful store fundraising in 2020. a total of £28,200 was raised last year at the co-operative food stores in hampshire thanks to the support from customers and local residents. to show southern co-op's appreciation to the local causes, the total was rounded up to more than £36,500. fundraising activities ranged from

colouring competitions and treasure hunts, to raffles and guess the sweets in a jar. campaign co-ordinator holly Bramble, said: "across all of our stores in the south, colleagues and customers raised a massive £120,000 for local partners. Photographer swaps pets for puzzles as he sets up new lockdown business a photographer who specialised in photographing four-legged pets has swapped paws for puzzles with his new venture. photographer olly clarke, from westbourne, was forced to put his pet photography business, paws and claws photography on hold due to lockdown restrictions. the 30-year-old decided to launch a new business, to not only allow him to continue doing what he loves and taking photos, but to keep people entertained throughout lockdown. the new venture, puzzle crazy, takes olly’s photos of scenic locations around the portsmouth area and turns them into jigsaws for people to complete at home. the idea came after he ordered a jigsaw online as a gift and was left with a lowquality item that he wasn’t satisfied with, so he decided to make his own. he has been walking around different local areas daily since september, taking

photos of the beautiful locations, before turning them into puzzles – including one of emsworth and langstone harbour. there are also puzzles of scenic views of Bosham, shoreham, west wittering and arundel castle. since launching the business in June, he has shipped puzzles across the world, including to america and poland. olly said: ‘i call it my puzzle pivot. i ran my business for five years before covid hit, so when i was unable to do what i love, i was gutted, so i’m so glad i’ve found something that, not only allows me to continue doing what i love, but helps people get through lockdown. olly also produces personalised products and has created puzzles of newly born babies for parents to send to their families, nostalgic family photos and even a spitfire puzzle.

olly said: ‘the puzzles have a lot of relaxation benefits; they can ease anxiety and help people unwind. they’ve definitely been more popular over lockdown – £10m worth of puzzles were sold last year and i can see why.’

http://www.portsmouthctc.org.uk Q you wrote about needing to replace a bike chain due to ‘stretch’ . is there anything i can do to prevent this ? a all moving surfaces wear over time, so the short answer is no, but there are things you can do to slow the wear down. most of the moving parts on a bike use ball bearings, packed with grease and need little attention for thousands of miles. your bike chain, however, is outside the bike, in the open, exposed to dirt, dust, and rain on a daily basis. it will either look dirty and greasy, or rusty and stiff, neither of which is good for durability.

the answer is to clean it regularly, more often if you ride through mud and snow, and to get oil deep inside where it can smooth out the movements and incidentally make the riding a little bit easier. cleaning: if the chain is really filthy wrap an old cloth round the lower part and turn the pedals backwards to draw the whole chain through the cloth a couple of times. then you need to degrease the whole chain. this can be done with a container of degreasing fluid. special fluids have been developed, but people have used diesel, petrol, or paraffin, and an old toothbrush to dip into and work the fluid into the links of the chain one at a time. very effective, but there is a quicker way, using a manufactured chain cleaner which is a narrow tank with rotary brushes that the chain goes round while still on the bike.you just half fill the little tank, put

the lid on which presses the chain against the brushes, and turn the pedals backwards a couple of times. this gets deep into each link of the chain and washes out the old oil (if any) and grit. after wiping down, it is a good idea to use soapy water and a sponge to wash the degreaser off, otherwise it can dilute the oil that is the next step. oiling: dry the chain and then oil it by gently dripping oil into each link. if you

rest the spout of the oil bottle down onto the top of the link then you can wind the chain backwards again, but very slowly so that at each bump of the chain passing drops a little oil into the joint. remember to wipe off any excess oil. you want it inside the chain, not dripping onto the tyres, and not waiting to catch any passing dust. this explanation probably takes longer to read than to do the actual job. five or ten minutes once you have got the kit and done it once or twice. i won’t recommend any make of chain cleaner, they vary in price from the professional ones to the less durable ones that will still do the job many times for a casual user. cleaning and oiling your chain will make it last longer, and save wear on your gears as well.

celestial beauty of the night sky a mesmerising shot of the milky way over an iron age hill-fort and a crab venturing out for a night-time forage are among the stars of the south downs national park’s astrophotography competition. more than 150 entries were received for the national park’s first cosmic photography contest and a judging panel has now chosen the winners across three categories. Judging the contest was dan oakley, “dark skies” ranger for the national park, graham Bryant, a fellow of the royal astronomical society, and petersfield-based tiffany francis-Baker, author of dark skies. taking the top spot in the south downs dark skyscapes category is “milky way from cissbury” by neil Jones - shown right. the stunningly-intricate shot shows off the chalk landscape of cissbury ring with an immense view of the milky way, as well as night-time views of towns and cities near the national park. dan said: “this is the best picture for dark skies that i’ve seen – i love it. it’s got a bit of everything.” graham said: “i like the juxtaposition of the dark monochromatic sky and the colours of the foreground. the milky way

has not been overprocessed and you can see it in all its glory.” taking second place is “milky way at Birling gap,” by John fox - below right. tiffany said: “it’s just a stunning photograph. the length in the image really helps you to see the whole of the milky way. i could look at this photo for a long time.” third place is awarded to “neowise over arundel”, also by neil Jones, with a stunning view of arundel castle and the comet neowise in the sky. Judges also highly commended a “meeting of old men”, by verity stannard, showing the long man of wilmington and the constellation of orion. in the living dark skies category, the first prize is awarded to “starry crab”, by anthony whitbourn, who captured a captivating shot of a shore crab at cuckmere haven. dan said:“i’d give this picture 10 out of 10. it’s really fun, lively and quirky.we don’t often see images like this in the national park.” tiffany added: “the colours are beautiful. it tells the story of nocturnal wildlife and all those creatures that come out when darkness falls.” picking up second place is “gazing at mars”, by luke chipperfield, who captured

an enthralling image of his two children looking up at the red planet while at river rother nature reserve in petersfield, hampshire. dan said: “there’s a great story behind this image and it’s the kind of photograph that really inspires people to go out stargazing for themselves.” third prize goes to “night fox”, by richard murray, who captured an incredible shot of a curious fox in his garden in waterlooville, hampshire. Judges also highly commended “startrail chestnut tree”, also by anthony whitbourn and taken at the cowdray estate in midhurst, west sussex. the final category to be judged was our magnificent moon, which had no geographic limit on where the photograph was taken. taking the top spot is “By the light of the silvery moon”, by david oldham, with a hauntingly-beautiful shot of lord’s piece in west sussex. graham said: “i love the silhouette of the trees and the mistiness of this image.” tiffany said: “i love this image because it really focuses on what the moonlight is touching and that’s a really interesting concept. it’s very ethereal, supernatural and captivating.” second place is awarded to “our magnificent moon”, taken by Jashanpreet singh dingra. the incredible shot of the moon was captured from the punjab region of india. tiffany said: “this is incredible photography of the moon and the detail in the craters is amazing.” third prize goes to “moonrise over london”, by martin howe, who captured the moon rising at twilight next to st paul’s cathedral. Judges also highly commended “moon and venus skies”, by fiona fillary, who captured the amazing night sky from her front garden near storrington, west sussex. winners will be picking up a prize of £150 for first place, £75 for second place

Craft Beer - How Is Beer Made?

Water, grain, hops and yeast are the four ingredients you need to make beer. So how do we turn these ingredients into delicious beer? Lets find out!

Mashing

Lautering After the mash more hot water is added to the top of the grain bed to rinse all the sugary liquid called wort which is transferred to the boil kettle.

Boiling We then boil the wort for an hour or more. This stops the enzyme process of the mash and fixes the amount of sugars that will be available to the yeast. The boil also ensures the wort is sterile.

This is the process of mixing hot water with malted grain consisting of barley, wheat and other grains depending on the style of beer. The grain is crushed beforehand to expose the natural starches within.

These are then converted to sugar by the grains own enzymes.

This sugar is a food source for the yeast to gorge on creating alcohol and carbon dioxide as a by product.

Hops are added at various points of the boil. Hops added at the start will add more bitterness and hops added towards the end will add more aroma and flavour.

Fermentation After the boil the wort is cooled and transferred to a fermentation tank.

Yeast is added and then left to ferment turning the wort into beer!

For some beers such as IPA’s we add more hops to give it more aroma and flavour. This is called dry hopping.

Conditioning Once the beer is finished fermenting its left to mature for a bit. This lets the yeast clean up any unwanted by-products such as diacytal which tastes a bit like butterscotch!

Cask, keg, cans or bottles?

Its now ready to be packaged. For cask we simply transfer it to the barrel just before fermentation has finished or we add a small amount of sugar. This lets the remaining yeast left in the beer naturally carbonate in the cask. For keg, Cans or bottles we carbonate in the tank before packaging. We close off the co2 blow off just before it finishes fermenting which naturally carbonates the beer.

So that’s how beer is made!

The yeast is then extracted from the bottom of the tank.

Our uni tanks allow us to ferment and condition all in one tank.

Don’t stop Wining Al Fresco Wines Jonathan rogers of vin wine merchants in emsworth looks at wines to drink on a lazy afternoon in the garden. with lockdown restrictions beginning to ease we can once again begin to think about some normality coming back especially getting together with friends. and with spring and summer approaching fast, our thoughts turn to garden parties, BBQ’s or simply just relaxing with a good book in the sun. the best wines for afternoon sipping in the sun are light, fresh crisp whites, rose or even light fruity reds. heavier wines will just wear you down especially if you are just snacking for lunch and finish you off for the rest of the day.

Bearing in mind alcohol levels have increased somewhat over the last 30 years or so, finding a wine which is lighter in alcohol is a somewhat difficult task. all those years ago most wines were a respectable 11%. nowadays its not unusual to have a hefty 14% as the norm. most of these heavier wines are from warmer climates so its best to look at cooler climate areas, but unfortunately this is not a hard a fast rule. it is a question of seeking them out. when you are choosing wine at any time of the year, always think about the style of wines you prefer. from the sharp crisp acidic wines to the softer, creamier styles, its handy to know your preference. the crisp fresh citrusy wines like sauvignon Blanc are glorious in the sun. refreshing, fruity and served chilled you cannot beat them. wines with more tropical fruit like viognier are much more rounded and peachy fruit. they can be heavier but if you prefer less acidity then these can still be perfect on a warm sunny afternoon. and do not forget chilling your reds. lighter, fruitier reds are perfect chilled down and make a great alternative to the usual chilled whites. pinot noir’s are best for this. ….

Fred’s Food outdoor cooking with asparagus and Butterflied leg of lamb now that we can meet up outside, it’s time to work on your BBQ skills in order to make the most of new-found social activity. the trick is to invest in some decent charcoal, as this holds its heat for much longer and isn’t doused in chemicals. then find a way to control the heat, either by adjusting the level of the grill, or by stacking the charcoal to one side, so you have a hot area, and a cooler area. there are a whole range of incredible BBQ’s available, and we work with the Big green egg which can cook almost any dish, as it controls the heat precisely. then seasonal food is delicious on the BBQ, especially fresh, local asparagus which you drizzle with olive oil and sea salt and gently cook over the coals until it is lightly caramelized on the outside and soft throughout. if you have a lid on your BBQ, then you should be able to moderate the heat and cook a traditional leg of lamb, but if it’s an open BBQ, you can ask your butcher to butterfly the leg so that it becomes like a large steak. it’s worth marinading the day before, either with traditional garlic and rosemary, or spicy harissa. feeds 8-10, but you can half the recipe. ingredients: • 1/2 onion • 4 cloves garlic, peeled • 2 tablespoons fresh rosemary leaves, or 1 tablespoon dried • Zest of 1 lemon • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1 butterflied leg of lamb, 2.5kg

method: 1. make the marinade: put onion, garlic, rosemary, lemon zest, apple cider vinegar, and olive oil into a food processor and pulse to a paste.

2. marinate the lamb: sprinkle a generous amount of salt and pepper over the lamb. place marinade and lamb into vac pac bag and rub all over, marinading for at least 2 hours, but preferably overnight. then remove from fridge 30 mins before cooking 3. light the BBQ, and once coals are hot, have a single layer of coals on one side, double layer on the other side to give two cooking temps.

4. place lamb on hot side of grill, fat side down and sear for 4 minutes each side.

5. move the lamb to cooler side of grill and cook for 10-15 minutes on each side or until internal temperature gets to 120-130°f 6. then take off the grill, cover with foil and rest for at least 10 minutes.

7. meanwhile you can grill vegetables on the other side of the grill.

8. slice the lamb across the grain of the meat and serve.

locKdown made little difference there is light at the end of the pandemictunnel. we can now see a route back to ‘normality’. family, friends, hugging, schooling, shopping, dining, pubbing - all come to mind. it has been tough and it has been so for a long time - but have you thought about those for whom the ‘lockdown’ has made little difference. those who for many years find it difficult to go out, who are isolated from their loved ones and others and unable to be involved in their community. we have all learnt a little about loneliness over the past year - but ours is coming to an end. the havant talking newspaper has for 27 years been providing a free service to those that literally cannot see ’the light at the end of the tunnel’. every fortnight an hour-long edition of local audio news is posted out to blind and partially sighted members of our community. the audio news is sourced from local publications (including this newspaper!) and delivered by mail to our ‘listeners’ on a usB memory stick. it is a simple process for the listener - the memory stick arrives in the post, they listen to it, and then pop it back in the freepost envelope. the service is free and,

if needed, we can provide the listener with a user friendly usB listening device with simple tactile controls. the regular flow of ‘local news’ keeps the listener in touch with the local community and rekindles their sense of belonging. we know that for many the service is really appreciated. the photo is of flora, guide dog to the late Jean smith of hayling. flora, now retired and lovingly cared for, accompanied us at many of our ‘stalls’ at local fairs first point to note is that if you know of anyone whose loss of sight is bringing them a sense of isolation and who could benefit from the news service then do let us know if the talking news proves not to be for them so be it. there is no harm in trying though. we have a team of around fifty volunteers who undertake the various jobs to keep the news editions coming out. editors who source and select suitable and varied articles. producers who knit the forthcoming edition into shape. readers who - read, engineers (our boffins) who make sure our ‘ums’ and ‘errs’ go unnoticed. finally a distribution team who send the new edition on its way to the listeners.

cheers! george and donella east in their heyday at the leopold tavern. lots of people love the idea of running a pub, but a hayling-born author has written a book that warns it is not always an easy life. george east grew up in a pub and ran pubs and clubs before taking on a corner-street local in portsmouth. in an eventful three years at the leopold tavern, he was twice voted as the worst landlord in Britain by his customers, had his public bar used as a temporary murder room by the local cid, then shot to international fame when his old bed collapsed and the legs appeared through the pub ceiling. 'we left them in place as a gimmick,' recalls george, 'then the story was picked up by a news agency and made headlines all over the world.' as a result of all the publicity, the leopold did a roaring trade, but it was,

george admits, not all beer and skittles. 'overall, it was good fun and we made a very good living, but it was very hard work. it's an old saying that pub landlords go to bed and get up on the same day, and our working day started at seven in the morning and finished after midnight. south downs national park writing our legacy teams up with south downs national park to launch new bursary scheme for Black, asian and ethnically diverse writers a new creative writing bursary is being launched for Black, asian and ethnically diverse writers whose work aims to explore the landscape, wildlife and heritage of the south downs national park. ‘shifting the gaze’ will offer 15 bursaries of £500 to writers to fund time researching and developing new writing projects that focus on the beautiful south downs landscape. the bursary programme is a writing our legacy project, in partnership with the south downs national park authority and in association with new writing south. applications for the first round of funding open on 5 april 2021, with a second round opening in July. this project follows a bumper 18 months of activity for writing our legacy. the sussex-based arts organisation delivered ‘new narratives’, a programme of workshops, socials and retreats for further information and how to apply for shifting the Gaze bursary round one applications will open on 5 april 2021 and close on 5 may 2021 at midnight. apply via www.writingourlegacy.org.uk new or unpublished writers will be encouraged to apply alongside more established or published writers.we will want to get an idea of where the writing or project is going, with a sample of writing included and what kind of support they think they’ll need after the r&d is complete. applicants will live in the region of the south downs national park including west sussex and hampshire. we may accept writers in other parts of the south east of england, providing good rationale is presented for their proposal and the bursary supports an intention to visit the park. see the discovery map on the park website for more information. applications will be accepted by google form or by email, with other options and support provided if applicants have any disability or language access needs (eg for writers who can’t write, we could accept voice recording/film). applicants can apply to do a standalone r&d or they can use the funding as match funding e.g. for arts council projects, although we prefer to fund standalone and offer support after the r&d is complete. grantees will be offered various marketing and press opportunities to promote their work and profile themselves.

remembering loved ones lost during the pandemic a national day of reflection was honoured on tuesday 23 march – the anniversary of the uk going into the first national lockdown – to remember all those who have sadly passed away during the pandemic and to show support for families who are grieving. the national day of reflection included a minute's silence at noon to reflect on those who have died, daffodils were placed in windows, as a symbol of hope; and online talks featuring people who are bereaved, celebrities and expert panellists sharing experiences and answering questions. as night fell, the nation were invited to appear on their doorsteps at 8pm with

candles, torches or simply lights from their mobile phones - for a minute of silence sharing a beacon of support in these incredibly tough times.

we’ve been supporting young people for over two decades and we have never seen such demands on our services.we want to help as many young people and families as we can, so in response to their growing needs we have increased support by over 1000 hours.that’s a lot of hours.with these increased hours of support have come some observations about key themes that young people are talking to us about. this month we're taking a look at three things that have stood out to us and what we’re doing to help combat them: 1. they feel left behind: we are seeing a trend in 16+ year olds who are struggling with feelings of being left behind and existing in a limbo after a year of disrupted education and extended periods of isolation; they feel like they’re struggling to find their footing in the world. to help with this we've stepped up communication across our partnerships with organisations we work with to help keep young people connected. seeing a positive trend in young people selfreferring we’ve been working to make sure that they are connected with someone, through a group or one-to-one capacity, who can help support them through their transitional periods and reach them earlier. across all of our areas, we've been reaching out to young people and families whilst they're on our waiting lists, making sure they're getting support from us as early as possible. the teams have been reaching out once a month to check in and see how the young person is doing and feeling, offering quick support and relief over the phone. this has been really valuable in helping them and their family feel as supported as possible.

2. they are experiencing serious and worrying situations: not only are young people seeing an increase in the pandemic having negative effects of their wellbeing we are also seeing a rise in reports of knife crime and serious crime and violence in under 20s. the numbers of young people not in education is mirrored in climbing rates of online risks including the targeting of vulnerable young people by county lines gangs, and extremism. so, how are we helping young people who are facing these situations?

we recognise that these young people need an individual and intensive support system that can be truly flexible to meet their needs when they need them most. we’re really fortunate to be able to provide that, being agile in our responses and tailoring our services to the young person. out and about on a walk and talk session in the sunshine 3. they want to be heard: young people have lost so much over the past year. importantly, they’ve lost opportunities to begin conversations to be curious, to explore, and to learn in an environment with adults they trust. we want to make sure that these young people are being heard, that they have a voice. from our detached work in our local communities where our youth workers are able to have candid conversations with young people without fear of stigma, through to our new youth voice group where young people have a space to voice their opinions and feedback, we are making sure that their voices are front in centre in the work that we do.

in light of recent news, the youth voice group have been talking about just how unsafe young people have been feeling at the moment. they were able to talk about what more they felt motiv8 could be doing to help them feel safe when going to different provisions that we offer. Bringing their ideas to the table and letting their voices be heard means we're able to take what they're feeling and channel it into helping them. together we're able to create lasting change with young people's voices at the heart of it. we hope that this gives you a bit of an insight into what young people are feeling and struggling with at the moment.the challenges keep mounting up, but we're working hard to make sure that young people feel empowered to take them on head on. our supporters are a big part of helping us be able to provide all the support we carry out to help young people; we couldn't do it without you. we really appreciate any support you can give, from sharing word about our work with friends and colleagues, to donating and payroll giving, it all helps us make a real difference.

Science’s Newest Star I introduced our next subject the Solar System to my Year 7 Science class and I was amazed at how much information Dylan already knew. He was very keen to share his knowledge so I gave him the opportunity to create and present a power point to the class on Monday 29th March.

‘During my Science lesson last week I was asked to produce a power point on the planets in our Solar System. This meant I had to stand up in front of the class to teach them about the planets and because I was so excited, I did the whole power point in one night!

I took on this challenge because I love science and I am passionate about the subject. I was nervous because I don’t really like standing up in front of people but I was fine with this situation because I love science. I really enjoyed doing this and also answered questions from the other students.’

Brendoncare community club Havant receives virtual royal visit hampshire-based charity, the Brendoncare foundation, welcomed the charity’s patron hrh the countess of wessex gcvo to its Brendoncare community club havant virtual meeting on wednesday 20 January. the countess was also celebrating her 56th birthday on that day. the countess was welcomed to the virtual meeting by marianne wanstall, Brendoncare’s chief executive. there were nine members of the club, together with kerry hicks, Brendoncare locality manager, in the meeting. the countess chatted with all the members of the community club havant. the members were very enthusiastic about the club and pat Bickers, club member said, “it was lovely to see the countess of wessex on our virtual club meeting. at first we were a little nervous but she is so warm and friendly that our nerves soon disappeared. “i found Brendoncare 7½ years ago after losing my husband, i was absolutely lost. Brendoncare made me so welcome and at home. they have been a lifeline. and now they have loaned me this device so i can see my friends. Brendoncare is a wonderful organisation, i can’t praise them enough.” and paul Bishop, also a member of the

river ems: call watchdogs to act a local environmental group is calling on national authorities to step up and protect the river ems from local water companies’ plans. the ems, a rare chalk stream, is threatened by the amount of water taken from its underground sources by portsmouth water (pw). the friends of the ems group (fote) sees the planned havant thicket reservoir as an opportunity for pw to reduce pressure on the river and help it regain a proper flow.

But the company has done a deal which would mean that supplies would be piped out of the local area and used by southern water (sw) instead. now fote is calling on the national water industry regulator ofwat and the environment agency to act. a fote spokesperson said: “the proposal for a reservoir at havant thicket gave us hope that the ability to capture and store new water would enable a reduction in the amount taken from the sources of the ems.

“But it looks like none of the reservoir supply will be used to help our river. instead, pw and sw have signed an agreement proposing a transfer of 60m litres per day from the local area. there is a proposal to convert seawater to drinking water using a plant at fawley, which we support. But if this does not go ahead, the amount transferred could increase to 115m litres per day. “the ems, with its trout and water voles and kingfishers, is in crisis. the effects of the water being taken by pw are becoming more and more apparent in the summer and early autumn, when flows drop and sections dry up altogether. “the evidence of damage to the ems, which has been known for years, should be acted upon. this transfer of water out of this area should not be allowed until steps have been taken to ensure proper flow in the ems. and havant thicket should not be a missed opportunity. further progress on the reservoir plan should only be permitted on condition that watercourses like the ems are protected and restored. “we acknowledge the need to maintain a public water supply in the face of population growth and climate change. But this cannot be at the further expense of fragile habitats, and

teachers connect children with our natural environment teachers across the region are being offered free online training support to prepare for a summer of outdoor learning to help connect young people with nature. working in partnership with the south downs education network, the national park authority is offering twenty online cpd (continuing professional development) training sessions, covering ideas and activities to take pupils outside this summer (subject to current covid restrictions being eased in the summer). thirteen organisations in the network have joined forces to help deliver the training. the fun and informative webinars this spring are a continuation of nine online training sessions which ran during autumn term of 2020. teachers can book the sessions to join them live or catch up later with the online recordings.

Jonathan dean (pictured left), education officer for the south downs national park authority, explained: “with all pupils forecast to be back in school this summer, we want to help teachers feel confident stepping outside the classroom.

“Building a connection with nature can help all of us cope with the stresses and strains of the past twelve months. there is a wealth of evidence that outdoor learning improves attainment for pupils and benefits the health and well-being of pupils and staff. “teachers can choose from the twenty sessions and benefit from the flexibility of being able to catch up online if they can’t join the session live. some sessions will uncover how to make the best use of schools grounds and nearby green spaces to teach curriculum subjects and topics. “other sessions will focus on how to

use woodland effectively, build fieldwork skills and make improvements to school grounds. several sessions share ways to use outdoor spaces for health and well-being, which is especially important in supporting pupils through these challenging times.” the autumn online training sessions were a big success, with more than 200 teachers taking part and lots of positive feedback. one participant said: “it was really useful and i've got lots of lovely ideas to take back to school. i can't wait to get started!”

the emsworth Poorhouse

over 100 years ago a local historian wrote:the poor, for a series of years, have been a great and increasing burden on the parish. so the present-day problem of the public assistance committees is nothing new! the closing of the casual wards at havant does not only mean the end of the chapter, but the opening of the books relating to the history of the local poorhouse.

But if the progress through life of many of the younger folk who have had to spend a period in the havant casual ward could be revealed, it would be found that a good proportion have made good and proved the truth of the saying that many an honest heart beats under a ragged coat! how many of our readers are aware that warblington, too, had its poorhouse, and in the very heart of the town of emsworth! mr a. w. rubick, a well-known local historian, reminds us that emsworth's poorhouse comprised a group of cottages

just to the north of the north street entrance to st James's churchyard. these cottages are still in a good state of preservation as private residences. the poorhouse, built on a piece of waste adjoining emsworth, was: granted by thomas panton, esq. may 22, 1776, to several of the principal inhabitants, for a term of 1,000 years, the survivor of whom assigned the home and premises to the rector, and his successor for the time being, in trust for the parish. oakum and needlework the building was sufficiently capacious for the purpose, and in march 1814, contained five men, seven women, ten boys, and nine girls. we are told: the men, in mild weather, being old and infirm, pick oakham, the women are employed in needlework and household affairs; boys ten years of age work in the sail manufactory; those, under that age go to the parish school. the men and women live in separate apartments, but eat together; the old people have three hot meat dinners, one soup dinner, two cold meat dinners, one bread and cheese dinner; for breakfast, bread and butter, except the boys and girls,

who have gruel; for supper, bread and cheese and beer. the master is allowed £20 per annum for collecting the rates, and farms the poor at 5s. 3d. (26p) per head, and he supplies them with every necessary, except physic, wine, and spirits. the parish school, upon dr. Bell's system, was, we are further informed: established here by the zeal of the inhabit¬ants, June 25, 1812. and occupies the workshops adjoining the poorhouse, divided into two apartments for boys and girls, in a neat and becoming manner. in march, 1814, there were 60 boys and 50 girls, who attended from nine till twelve and two till five, and were taught eng¬lish, writing, and accounts. mr. John small, the

master, who diligently discharges his duty, is paid £50 per annum. mrs. Bevis superintends the girls' school, and receives £25 per annum. parents desirous of sending their children to the school had to apply to the guardians, who admitted them at five years of age, and continued their education until they reached the age of 12. this excellent institution bids fair to confer great benefits upon the neighbourhood, and we may look forward with confi¬dence to a general improvement of the morals and conduct of the lower classes of the community, whose instructions and improvement have been hitherto much neglected.

in march hsdc staff and students welcomed parliamentary under secretary of state for apprenticeships and skills gillian keegan to south downs campus. during the visit, minister keegan visited the covid19 lateral flow test centre in the sports hall and spoke with students and staff about their experiences in taking and administering the tests. from there she visited the new t level classroom area, where she met with chef apprentices will and natalie and fullers representative craig parsons, apprenticeships team members and t level students and staff. minister keegan said: “it was fantastic to visit hsdc south downs campus and see how they have set up their testing centre as they welcome back all students. “seeing how excited the students are to get back in the classroom was testament to the hard work of staff to make this happen – i’m grateful to every member of staff who has helped make this transition smoother. “i really enjoyed speaking to apprentices and t level students about the innovative ways they have been supported to continue their studies during this difficult time. their enthusiasm for the exciting range of career paths their training will take them was wonderful to hear.” hsdc principal and ceo mike gaston commented, “‘we’re excited to be able to welcome students back to all campuses across hsdc today. it has been challenging putting the testing regime in place to accommodate the high volume of students but the end result of having them being back for face-to-face learning makes it all very worthwhile. ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Zion is 5-year-old neutered male cat who has been living here at the centre since the beginning of march. he arrived here because he was quite nervous and this made it hard for his owners to keep on top of his grooming. they also felt that he was probably overwhelmed and not settled in the home as he was not happy living with other pets and children. Zion can be a really sweet boy who loves to have a fuss made of him, but because of his anxiety

it can sometimes take him a bit of time to trust someone new. he is looking to find a new loving home where he is the only pet and there are no young children. we feel he will also need a quiet home with owners that are around a lot to help him come out of his shell. with lots of love and trust we are sure Zion will blossom into the loving confident cat we know he is. emsworth Horticultural society did you become a ‘lockdown Gardener’ in 2020?

do you want to improve and learn more? then why not join the emsworth horticultural society? members have access to sustainable gardening supplies at our distribution hut and lots of advice from our members, who volunteer there. we hold monthly talks on Zoom and in march ‘andrew duncan head gardener and designer of arundel castle’ gave an entertaining and informed talk attended by 78 members. andrew creates different gardens for all round interest but in spring it is the tulip festival visitors come to see. using a drone to take videos he showed us the amazing labyrinth of 60,000 tulips, all planted with an adapted bulb planter used like a pogo stick. the festival was

emsworth couple re-invent ways to bring family into their new home as early signs of lockdown easing gives a glimmer of hope to many people missing friends and family, two emsworth residents have been busy thinking up new ways to welcome guests into their brand new home – without even leaving the house. sunny and gloria onuh, who live at Barratt homes saxon corner have launched a youtube channel to share their ‘new house’ journey with family and friends. the couple were the first to move in at the five-star housebuilder’s development in emsworth just before lockdown last year and have been enjoying settling into the new community. however, they have also been longing to show friends and family around their new pad – so they came up with an alternative way to do this while lockdown prevented them from welcoming people into their home. gloria, who has clocked up an impressive 1300 subscribers on the channel, said: “we were eagerly awaiting the launch of saxon corner and were delighted to be the first to

move in here. we absolutely love it! it is a gorgeous place to live and it has been amazing to watch the area develop.” the couple have uploaded a few videos from “first look” to inside tours of the property, each attracting around 1,000 views each – and it’s definitely proved a hit with gloria and sunny’s friends and family. “moving into our new home in a year full of lockdowns and restrictions means we haven’t been able to show off our new house as we would have liked,” gloria said. “it was because of this that we decided to set up our very own youtube channel. “we have uploaded several videos that show our new home and the development in all its glory – it has been the perfect way to share our love of this place during these difficult times!” the couple opted for an ennerdale property which has not only impressed the couple as they are also big fans of the development’s location. sunny said: “there’s so much to see and

by denise Kelly www.lifeisforthriving.com so many people have spoken to me over the last few weeks about feeling anxious and in low mood. this is completely understandable because of what’s going on in the world all around us right now. one particular lady i spoke to, who was taking anti-depressants, then admitted that although she understood the correlation between her mental health and her diet, she was craving a lot of sweet foods, and her general diet was not great. i know when you are not feeling good, it’s hard to muster the motivation to prepare good healthy food. however, it could make the biggest difference to the way you feel, and even help a person come off the medication at some point if that’s what the individual wanted. some medication, of course is essential, but it’s important to remember that all medication is toxic to your system. and toxicity causes disharmony. what you are trying to create is a balanced body, full of

the right nutrients.you don’t need to go and get thousands of supplements.you just need to focus on your diet, and a throw a few superfoods in the mix too.

Basically, our body needs antiinflammatory foods, hydration, a multitude of vitamins and minerals from the most natural sources possible, plus movement and meditation. what you don’t need is processed foods, high sugar intake, excessive caffeine, alcohol and constant elevated levels of stress. the latter is the perfect recipe for anxiety and depression. those foods and drinks might make you feel better temporarily, but long term, they are just going to make you feel worse. every day make sure you have plenty of good fats. avocados, coconut butter, nuts, chia and flax seeds. these good fats help you on so many levels. they help to keep each and every cell in your body permeable, which allows the nutrients to get dispelled around the body as it should,

and remove the toxins through our waste avenues, such a sweat, urine and poo! i know it’s a bodily function that no one wants to talk about, but if you’re not going at least 2 x per day you are not having enough fibre in your diet. fibre should be in the format of an abundance of fruit and vegetables. including green smoothies, soups, broths, quinoa dishes, stacked with chopped colourful vegetables such as peppers, broccoli, beetroot, carrots and sweet potatoes. these foods will create an environment that makes your body very happy! you could even juice if you want to give your body a real good energy kick – but make sure its veggie heavy – such as celery, cucumber, limes and apple.yum! then move – every day. exercise in any format is going to be helpful to the body. you got to move, stretch, jump up and down and generally get your blood pumping. this will give you a rush of endorphins – so you feel uplifted and happier. it’s a fact!

meditation – 10 mins per day 2 x a day for 2 weeks will change your life.there are so many guided meditations on you tube that there is no excuse for anyone any more! or if that’s not your bag staring into the flame of a candle for 10 mins will still the mind and help to calm your nervous system, helping your body to feel more settled and grounded. drink calming teas such as camomile, lime flower and lavender will help bring you into harmony. you could also try milk thistle tincture to help support the liver. although you may wonder what this has to do with depression, i can tell you it has a lot to do with how you feel. if your liver is happy, you will be too, so look after it. check out my range of superfood blends to guide you and your health through the winter months – i also offer a health testing service to see what’s really going on inside your body. for more information visit: www.lifeisforthriving.com

news from Hampshire east trefoil Guild maybe you have never heard of trefoil guild even though you have probably heard of guiding and scouting, perhaps even being a member yourself at some point in your life. trefoil is simply, ‘guiding for adults’. whether you’re involved in guiding or not, trefoil guild is a wonderful opportunity to meet like-minded people to share your next adventure - whatever that might be! trefoil guild acts like a branch of girlguiding and its members agree to support the guiding ethos - including the pledge to help other people. many members pass on their skills and knowledge to local guiding units, from helping Brownies work towards a badge to preparing older girls for a camping adventure. many members are unit leaders or helpers in girlguiding units, and this is certainly true in our area.

But it’s not all about the girls - there are plenty of opportunities for members to try something new, take on a new personal challenge and escape the daily routine. the best thing is that what you do is up to you! trefoil guild offers members personal and social opportunities whilst supporting guiding and scouting. there are 18 thriving trefoil guilds in the east of hampshire which, in normal times, meet monthly for activities, talks or outings. throughout the uk there are over 1,100 trefoil guilds with over 18,000

members - some meet every week, others less frequently, perhaps in the evening or in the afternoon. for trefoil guilds in hampshire east guiding county, 2020 started so well, as liz daniels, our county chair writes in her annual report.this was due to have been presented in march 2021 at our county annual meeting which is now sadly cancelled. ‘we began 2020 by holding a joint thinking day/friendship service in st John’s church, farlington.thinking day marks the joint birthdays of our founders, lord robert Baden-powell and his wife olave when we give thanks and remember our fellow guide and scout members throughout the world. during the service everyone was given a paper chain with a member country of guiding written on it and then, during the service, we linked them all together to make one very long chain to symbolise our worldwide guiding family. candles were lit to remember those who had passed away during 2019 and the hampshire east singing circle entertained us, both before and after the service. coffee and biscuits were served and then it all went horribly wrong, didn’t it? sadly, this was the first and last time that we were able to get together as a county in 2020. like everywhere else, all planned events were cancelled, initially after a lot of

deliberation and soul searching, and so the year stretched ahead of us. however, in true trefoil style everyone in hampshire east just ‘got on with it’ and, like others, we learned how to use technology, we signed up for more voyage awards - or completed ongoing ones - completed stars challenges and we cleaned out lots of cupboards. county newsletters were produced, using quirky items sent in by our members together with news of crafts produced, new skills learned and general updates for everyone. these continued until the summer when things began to look a little better and we were able to at least get out and meet some of our members, socially distanced of course. our pr adviser, also produced enewsletters which were distributed to our members as well as local mayors etc, just to keep trefoil in the public eye. in august we began to get a little more optimistic. we now know what a mistake that was; and so, october saw planning begin for our county christmas party. it was a bold concept which would see every one of our 300+ members receiving an invitation and then a gift pack so that, wherever possible, we could all sit down on the same day and at the same time to enjoy a scone and a mince pie and know that all

our friends around the county were doing the same. we just managed to get all packs put together and delivered in time for the party. this started with a Zoom gathering attended by an amazing 77 members and then continued with each guild organising activities for their own members to carry on the fun. phew! it worked and we had some lovely comments afterwards, particularly from those who hadn’t been able to get out to meet others and who were delighted that we had thought of them. everyone in the county team has played their part in getting us all through the year as successfully as possible and my thanks go to all of them, but especially to our secretary, who not only had to get used to the Zoom technology but also had to take several sets of meeting minutes no mean feat. now we move on with hope and expectation’. we’re looking forward to the time we can meet again in person. we not only miss our social activities and being together but our tea and cake too! we would also be pleased to welcome new members should you be interested in joining us. new Book - Just a Pompey Boy at last we are able to tell you about the latest book from george east. portsmouth-born author george east has recalled life in the city at a time when bomb-damaged buildings were adventure playgrounds and the communal family bath was taken once a week in a tin tub in the kitchen. in Just a pompey Boy, - published by la puce publications available in e-book form through amazon and also in paperback - george invites readers to travel back to the years immediately after world war two, when the city was recovering from hundreds of bombing raids on the naval Base. as he says, he wanted to pass on memories of that unique time before it was too late: ‘when i ran the local radio station in the 1970s,’ says george, ‘one

of my priority projects was to record the memories of older portsmouth people about life in the city in the previous century. there’s a huge amount of historical data about portsmouth, but not so much about what life was like for ordinary people in the past. then my wife pointed out that i should share my memories of portsmouth after the war before, like bomb dumps, food rationing, saturday morning picture clubs, trams and mud-larking, i’m no longer around.’ ‘i hope older readers will be reminded of their childhood when times could be hard but life was good’, adds george. ‘they say the past is a foreign country, and i reckon younger people will be amazed at how we lived then, and some will think i was writing about a time when Queen victoria was on the throne!’

the Hayling Poorhouse and the Quaint ways of running it

the parish of north hayling, although now very much less in population than the sister parish of south hayling, was in the earlier history of hayling island evidently the more important. a census taken in 1788 gave the population as being considerably the larger of the two parishes. the fact that north hayling had its own poorhouse, whereas there is no trace of such an institu¬tion in south hayling, seems to point to the same conclusion. the former poorhouse is now a row of picturesque cottages known as north terrace. in the year 1834 the parish workhouses were superseded by the union workhouses, the act making the union instead of the parish the unit of local administra¬tion. the havant Board of guardians then took over the duties formerly carried out by the parish of north hayling. the parochial records of' north hayling are in good order from the year 1793, but those previous to this date seem to have been lost. the records show a, monthly meeting, with accounts and minutes kept, signed by the churchwarden and two overseers, and being verified twice a year by two Justices of the peace. the income as obtained by making a poor rate and there are many entries such as: cost of new book, 4s. (20p). making book, 1s. (5p), but there is no record of clerical work beyond this. if there was a balance in hand, it was stated that the overseers were in pocket so much; if a deficit, that they were out of pocket by so much for the month. some items of of expenditure are in many instances most interesting. in may, 1796, there is this curious entry: paid for the men raised for his majesty's navy, £7 8s. 2d. (£7.41). one would not expect to find any reference to the county rate in 1799, but the payment of £5 19s. 6d. (£5.97½p) with stamp 2d. (1p) is so entered, whilst further entries state that the overseers paid the vagrants tax for a similar amount. they also paid: Joseph parr's lodgings in the small-pox, 10s. 6d. (52½p) and at a later date there is an entry: for journey expenses to fareham for the examination of the same man, 18s. 9d. (94p), evidently to satisfy the authorities that he had recovered.

James guy was paid for relief, and for ‘doctor's stuff,’ 3s. 6d. (17½p). another entry is: for going to the crowner, 2s. (10p), and on the same date: for burying a man, 2s. (10p). on another occasion: 1 gallon of beer for master aldent's burial. there

appears to be some connexion between the entries which follow each other: Beer and hollands to peter Brown, 5s. 9d. (29p). paid the clerk for digging phebe Brown's grave, 2s. 6d. (12½p). did the distracted widower require stimulating? another curious entry is on one line without any stops. it reads: dame renolds to bury her child 3s. 6d. (17½ p) yeast 3 pence 3s. 9d.

Burying appears to have been a thirsty job. here is another entry: paid mr. Bagley for burying of sarah patte 1s 9d. (9p) and one gallon of beer 1s.

4d. (7p) mrs pilling was paid 6s. (30p) for making a shroud, and siam lamar 5s. (25p) for digging two graves, whilst mr cutler was paid 12s 6d. (62½ p) for making two coffins. food purchases naturally occupy con¬siderable space in the records. pork must have been a prominent item in the menu, judging by the repeated purchase of fat hogs, some weighing over 22 score (440lb – 200kg), the price ranging from 8s.

6d. (42½p) per score. pigs were evidently kept at the poorhouse, there being several entries of the purchase of pens for the poorhouse hog. one entry runs: killing a hog, with a man to help cost 4s. (20p), whilst 1s. 6d. (7½p) was allowed: for going to see a hog, evidently with a view to purchase. occasionally there was beef, one entry being: 21 pounds bull beef and half head 5s. 4½d. (27p). another item, which showed that the churchwarden sometimes did business with the house: paid myself for ½ cwt. and 4 pounds cheese 12s. 10d.

(64p). lard was 6d. (2½p) a pound, and butter 1s 4d. (7p). the pay for work seems very little compared with our present-day standards.

a day's work in the poorhouse garden was 1s. 4d. (7p). dame Barber was paid: 3s.

(15p) a week for nursing Ben grist's wife, cutting 200 bundles furze was paid for with 7s. (35p). dame couzens, for her day's washing was paid: 1s. 6d. (7½ p) and leasing 18 bushels of wheat 15s. (75p). relief in cash was entered as: let dame alwick have 2s. (10p). let old James vick have 4s. (20p). paid Ben grout's wife 5 weeks at 2s. (10p). Boarding-out prices seem quite fantastic compared with those of to-day. thus: paid master Bird for keeping Josiah lomar 11 weeks 11s. (55p). from another entry it evidently appears that the man had shifted his lodgings, as

master reed was paid a similar sum. farmer kewell was paid: £1 1s. 6d. (£1.7½p) for keeping Bill chambers three weeks, and John rogers £1 7s. 6d. (£1.37½p) for keeping susanah holt 55 weeks. on January 18, 1807, on a page by itself, duly signed by the parish officials, is an entry as follows: at a vestry meeting in the parish church it was agreed that the allowance of 8s. (40p) a week to richard parr and his wife should be continued on the following terms, that they were to support themselves without any other aid from the parish. was this the forerunner of the present-day ‘means test’?
