we are deleighted to have reached the major milestone of fifty editions. from our inception in cafe nero where we planned to publish our first edition back in 2012 - see it on line at: www.postcodepublicastions.com we have grown steadily, far exceeding our initial modest targets to raise funds for community projects throughout the postcode districts which we serve. since then we have raised and donated hundreds of thousands of pounds to worthy projects across the area helping younger and older residents, and we hope to be able to continue this work through the kind inclusion of our advertisiers and the corporations that offer us their generous corporate support funding. please share likes on facebook to spread the word and extend our readership. although we are presently only publishing on line we are planning to return to having paper copies available in our usual pick up points as before.

repair cafÉ havant to open soon

repair cafe havant was due to officially launch on 13 June but like so many things had to take a back seat as the area struggled with the challenge of coronavirus. however as we emerge from lockdown plans are afoot to get the repair cafe up and running within the next month or so. our location will be at the pallant centre in central havant and we will open once we feel it is safe to do so. the repair cafe does not intend to take work away from existing repairers but instead offers a chance to keep items out of landfill and in use for longer. at the same time it offers the opportunity for people to learn new skills by watching a repairer fix an item. if you want to keep in touch with what is happening with repair cafe havant or would like to find out about volunteering with the repair cafe please join the facebook group – search for “repair cafe havant” or drop an email to repaircafehavant@gmail.com. the repair cafe relies on volunteers – not just to repair items but also as the first point of contact – welcoming visitors, taking details and matching up items in need of repairs with repairers.

Funding award to Park Community School alan delivering food and shopping the last few months have been tough for many local residents, and i know the sacrifices that have been made to help us control the virus and save lives.

in the last month the government has announced some easing of the lockdown restrictions. to find out more visit the dedicated section of my website www.alanmak.org.uk/covid19 that i’m keeping up-to-date with the latest information and advice i receive. in the last few weeks i've also been working closely with havant and waterlooville fc, where i am vice president and a season ticket holder, to help them secure a playoff place in the national league south. the hawks were second in the table when football stopped in march, which would have normally entitled them to a playoff position. they were initially told by the league authorities that the playoffs could not take place due because the league misinterpreted government restrictions. i took up the case with the sports minister, who agreed with my view that the hawks are eligible to play if they can do so safely. following my intervention, the national league has now changed its recommendation to enable playoffs, a decision that has now been endorsed by the other clubs in the division through a vote. i hope that everyone stays safe and i'll continue to provide regular updates to my email newsletter subscribers. to subscribe for updates, visit alanmak.org.uk/newsletter.

for a second year a joint government funding award to park community school and romsey community school will allow them to expand their last year’s exiting ‘connect4summer’ programme providing for children, their families or carers, and additional support for our most vulnerable families in need, at fifty-eight venues across hampshire, portsmouth, southampton and the isle of wight including a range of sports activities, healthy cooking classes. headteacher of park community school, christopher anders, said: “we are very excited and delighted to be involved in this large project for a second year. we will be able to support more families with holiday child care and family fun days.”

Quarantine crafts from making space the coronavirus lockdown means millions of people are looking for ways to fill their time, and parents are searching for activities to keep their children busy at home. luckily, making space can provide creative inspiration for all, adults and children alike. the havant-based craft organisation may have closed its doors to the public during the pandemic, but that doesn’t mean the making has to stop, as outreach project manager ami hyde has developed a series of online resources to keep people crafting from home. each week, a number of video demonstrations are posted on making space’s website and youtube channel, covering fashion design, animation, papercraft, print, textiles and more, all designed to be tried from the comfort of your home using readily available materials. the tasks can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. ami said, “we were so disappointed not to be able to run our usual workshops during coronavirus, but i still wanted to inspire people to be creative, especially as it can be hard to fill the time at home during the government restrictions.we know how fantastic craft is at promoting mental wellbeing - just trying out a new activity provides a huge sense of achievement, and is also great fun!”

will our pubs ever get back to normal?

holt’s are an independent family owned firm who have been brewing in manchester since 1849. they have 127 pubs in north west england and supply over 500 other outlets across the country. the firm bought their first pub in 1861 and started bottling beer in 1901. the specialise in cask ales and offer a wide range of beers including golden ale, Bitter, mild, ipa and a Black ale. holt’s are active in the local community and set up the christie hospital and holt radium institute. here are my tasting notes: champion ale 1849 4.5% this is a dark ruby ale with a very full on malty, caramel flavour. i would call this a brown ale which is a traditional northern style of beer. it is slightly sweet, not unlike a mild. humdinger Golden ale 4.1% mexican honey is added to this golden brew to give it a well-balanced taste. this is a modern beer with a citrus aroma. maple moon 4.8% a dark golden beer with a touch of maple which does work and balances the citrus flavour. maple Gold Golden ale 4.3% this is a lighter version of maple moon. it is a golden ale with a fruity, citrus taste with just a hint of maple syrup.

sixex strong ale 6% this is a strong ale brewed to a 100 year old recipe. i really enjoyed this full on rich toffee flavoured beer. it is a beer to sip and really appreciate. it is a long time since i tried anything so full of flavour. highly recommended. manchester brown ale 3.6% i was immediately drawn to the lowry-like artwork on the label which suggests that this is an older style of beer. these types of low alcohol, sweet brown beers are deeply unfashionable now but were widely drunk up until the 1960s. i really like mild and brown ales with their sweet malty taste with an almost complete absence of hop flavour.

Gbbf 2020 cancelled holt’s beers are available by mail order from: www.bestofbritishbeer.co.uk/ the beers listed above cost from £29 for a case of 12 x 500 ml bottles. the great British Beer festival (gBBf) 2020 which was scheduled to be held from 4 – 8 august 2020 at olympia, london has been cancelled by camra. gBBf was the largest of its kind in the uk and attracted crowds of over 40,000. other smaller festivals have also been cancelled including the emsworth Beer festival which was due to be held from 25 -27 september. the organisers hope to be able to hold the event in the winter. it is possible that we will not see any beer festivals in the uk this year. for up to date information on beer events see what’s Brewing at: www.camra/org/uk

some pubs re-opened on 4 July.the new rules about social distancing means table service only. it will be interesting to see how this might work. all pubs in the uk have been closed since 23 march 2020. for the last 30 years there has been a steep decline in the number of pubs in the uk with up to 1000 closing each year. in 2019 there were around 38,000 pubs in england and wales together with 1,800 breweries. large pubs, particularly those with gardens may be able to manage social distancing but small pubs may struggle to open. pubs with restaurants may also be viable but small community pubs are at risk. most pubs in the uk are now owned by property companies such as admiral taverns, ei group, mitchells & Butlers, punch and wellington. their aims are to maximise the value of their real estate and we may see some of their pubs closing and ending up as housing developments or convenience stores. some pubs have tried to keep the business running by offering beer and/or food delivery services. demand for beer during the closure has remained high with many mail order firms reporting record levels of sales. prior to the coronavirus emergency 46% of beer was consumed in pubs. hopefully drinkers will return to pubs but the current social distancing rules mean that there will be no return to the way things used to be.

£26 million a year or half a billion pounds over two generations cpre hampshire, the countryside charity announces the findings of a major piece of independent research it commissioned last year to explore the value of the countryside in south hampshire. the report focuses on the potential benefits to health and wellbeing, the economy, and the value of nature and ecosystems. ‘introducing a south hampshire green Belt: exploring the socioeconomic and environmental value’ by nef consulting, part of uk think tank the new economics foundation, is based on the large body of evidence from uk and international research. cpre hampshire is campaigning for a new green Belt to prevent urban sprawl north of the built-up areas of south hampshire. dee haas, chair of cpre hampshire said: ‘a south hampshire green Belt is part of our strategic vision for the county. we want to make sure that south hampshire has a countryside next door for current and future generations. a green Belt would provide vital access to the countryside for people living in the larger towns and cities of eastleigh, fareham, portsmouth, romsey, southampton and winchester, and restrict the further sprawl and merging of these urban areas. during the coronavirus lockdown, there’s been a surge of appreciation for the countryside and an awareness of the role that green spaces and nature play in our wellbeing. we’re realising the value of the countryside nearest to our homes. this value can be expressed in different ways.’ the research finds that the countryside north of the urban centres of south hampshire could generate almost £26

million a year in health, wellbeing, economic and ecosystem benefits if protected by a green Belt: • the health and wellbeing benefit for people living in and around this area of countryside could amount to up to £17 million a year. this value relates to the potential loss of wellbeing if the proposed green Belt area was built on.

• the potential impact of building across the proposed green Belt area may cost the nhs up to £690,000 in increased gp visits a year.

• the value of ecosystem services provided by the proposed green Belt area for food, removal of air and carbon pollution, flood protection and biodiversity are estimated at £7.6 million a year. these are important aspects in tackling the climate emergency.

• the potential economic benefit from tourism and recreation in the proposed green Belt area is estimated as much as £1.3 million a year • looking ahead over two generations or the next 60 years, if net present value (npv) is applied to the annual figures, this could produce well in excess of half a billion pounds (£0.5 billion) in health, wellbeing, economic and ecosystem benefits • up to £452 million in health and wellbeing benefits for people living in and around the proposed green Belt • £192 million from ecosystem services

provided by the proposed green Belt area • £35 million in economic benefits from tourism and recreation activity in the proposed green Belt area. nef consulting’s analysis is based on the large body of evidence from uk and international research studies on the physical and mental health benefits of green and open spaces – benefits that are being highlighted even more to all of us during the coronavirus pandemic. dee haas added: ‘we want our decision-makers to make sure that the value of our countryside, as set out in this report, is retained by the protection of a green Belt – the only effective legislation

Jobs in the Garden for July and August

hopefully, everyone is now taking some time to enjoy their garden space which is full of flowers and garden produce and looking at its best. it is well documented that gardening has proven health benefits; is an excellent way to spend time outdoors in the fresh air and sunlight and to undertake physical activity at many different levels. spending time outdoors in your garden or nature and is also proven to elevate your mood and therefore your mental well-being. there are therefore, many jobs you can be getting on with this summer. keep on top of weeds hoe or pull them up when they are small and leave them on the surface to die back , ideally on a sunny day. care for your lawn it is important to continue giving your lawn some attention in summer. apply fertiliser, which along with regular cutting on a higher cut, and if necessary watering, will ensure you maintain a green and healthy lawn.

dahlias if you are growing dahlias, they are greedy plants, so give them a good feed in July. it is also a good time to tie stems to stakes or use a plant support. if you buy a new dahlia plant to put in your garden, choose a fertile, moist but well-drained soil, and a sunny, sheltered spot or even keep them in a pot. they will keep flowering through till autumn with regular deadheading.

fruit trees thin out your fruit‌. apple trees naturally shed some of their small fruit and large clusters of fruit will lead to lower quality later on. to ensure you get the best from your apples and pears for example, reduce each cluster to around two fruits. if you have an olive tree, water it well once a week rather than give it a small amount each day and give it a good feed at the same time. the same applies to other potted shrubs and pay particular attention to plants potted up more recently. cuttings take cuttings from your favourite perennials and shrubs to grow on for next year. even you do not have a greenhouse, these can be kept indoors on a windowsill in winter. if you need help or advice on the best way to do this, there is plenty of advice on the internet. there are many different ways to approach this, so it is best to check for each particular plant. the results can be very rewarding and you can share the results with friends and family if successful.

Garden birds feed the birds‌ they still need feeding in the summer months especially when they are raising their young. high protein feed is

best. we have been more aware of the birds in our gardens this year and the bird song has definitely been louder or maybe just easier to hear with lower noise levels! wildflowers we hear a great deal about the importance of wildflower areas in our garden and if you have managed to create an area like this, you will be noticing the bees and insect life will have been enjoying it. continue to add plants and seeds to this area, maybe even appropriate ones from other parts of your garden. helping people with dementia during the covid crisis the last few months have been tough for all of us, with lockdown, businesses and shops closed, children home from school and disruption to all our normal routines.

But for people living with dementia this has been especially difficult. many of them may find it hard to understand what is happening and why they cannot do all the things they normally enjoy. in addition, understanding the social distancing rules and the need for additional handwashing and hygiene may be difficult. sports, activities and organised groups have all been suspended and most face to face meetings stopped, so carers too have struggled to find the support and advice they need. thankfully, things are beginning to ease, and we hope that before long we will be able to resume a more normal life. however, in the meantime there are still resources to turn to and people to help you even if we cannot meet. keeping in touch with family and friends is really important, whether by phone, online chats or now face to face at a social distance. try to maintain regular contact and help your loved ones with dementia to keep in touch too. as lockdown rules relax, it continues to be beneficial to take regular exercise, if only

getting out in the garden or for a short walk in the fresh air. for those unable to get out a simple chair-based routine will still help to keep them fit. there are many such classes online, from yoga to aerobics, so have a look for what suits you. maintaining a daily routine for anyone living with dementia, can be reassuring and help them to deal with life. as well as regular mealtimes, why not try some different activities during the day? if people enjoy listening to music, there are a number of resources to help you find suitable tunes. if you have internet access BBc musical memories and BBc memory radio are useful tools to find playlists, or you could compile your own list with the help of websites such as www.playlistforlife.org.uk if your loved one enjoys reading or looking at magazines, then you may find the library a useful resource. whilst libraries are closed you can access them online for newspapers, e-books and magazines. go to www.hants.gov.uk/library other simple activities might include crafts, baking, gardening or even jigsaw puzzles. games, puzzles and books specifically for people living with dementia are available from a number of websites, including alzheimer’s society, active minds

(www.active-minds.org) and www.alzproducts.co.uk amongst others.

HELP IMPROVE RECYCLING

Just because an item indicates that it is recyclable, that dosen’t mean it is in Havant Borough havant has problem with waste. we put too much rubbish in our black bins that can be recycled and too much material in our recycling bins that is not recyclable, or can't be recycled in hampshire. this results in contamination and additional costs (currently absorbed by hampshire) that might have to be paid by havant. this is a big problem. some simple facts: • more money is spent on waste management in hampshire than on highways maintenance!

• havant's recycling rate is 31%, compared to hart district council (@ 41%) (best performing) and gosport (@ 24%) (worst performing). the national target is 50%.

• havant's contamination rate (non recyclable in recyclable waste) is expected to be 13% for 2017/2018 against a target of 5%.

• the amount of recyclable materials captured in residual waste in havant is 17%. the challenge: to reverse the two figures; recycle more of the correct material and put non-recyclable material into general household waste. if we achieved this, our recycling rate would increase to 44% (the best in hampshire) and significantly reduce the likelihood of incurring costs associated with contamination.

despite what we read in the press, plastic 'food trays' are not one of biggest problems. surprisingly, the three biggest recycling 'contaminants' are textiles, food and 'black bag' waste. seven thousand (7,000) tonnes of textiles are put in recycling bins every year in hampshire.yes, they can be recycled... but not through our recycling bins. havant Borough council has produced a leaflet that will be sent to every household in the borough with the council tax bills for 2020/2021. it is detailed below Bottles/glass and clothes can be recycled; there are many collections points around the borough, but not (currently) from the doorstep by havant Borough council. from 1 apr 2020, hampshire county council will require residents who use household waster recycling centres (hwrcs) to register their vehicles. the move is to ensure that only hampshire households have free access to these sites. registering a vehicle is easy. it can be done online at: https :llwww.hants.gov. uklwasteandrecyclinq/recyclinqcentres/vehicl e-reqistration or by telephoning 0300 555 1389 (residents without internet access).

citizens advice havant thanks its wonderful volunteers for their dedication during lockdown

citizens advice havant has continued giving advice to those in need throughout the coronavirus pandemic thanks to the tireless dedication of its staff and volunteers. the team quickly rallied to ensure as many people as possible could be helped over the phone or by email. they’ve found new ways of working and are getting to grips with video conferencing and other tools to communicate with their team and also keep in touch with the people who are

not able to volunteer at the moment. as part of volunteers’ week, which ran from 1 to 7 June, citizens advice havant wants to thank volunteers for their contribution not only during this exceptional time, but throughout the year. currently during coronavirus lockdown, 15 of the volunteers at citizens advice havant have been contributing over 120 hours to the service each week from their homes. also 9 new volunteers who were

recruited through the volunteer recruitment day in January have been busy training online and via video meeting. citizens advice nationally just celebrated 80 years since it started originally the charity was formed at the beginning of the second world war to help people with the impacts of war such as rationing, evacuation and losing their home in the Blitz. the current situation has echoes of that time and citizens advice havant is prepared to support people with the problems they face both during and after the immediate situation. in the last year, citizens advice havant helped 4493 people with 14,477 problems, such as debt, housing, benefit and employment issues.

Emsworth Friday Art Group’s Dali Project emsworth friday art group, who (under normal circumstances) meet weekly on friday mornings at emsworth community centre, completed a group project in february 2020, before lockdown. this involved selecting a painting – in this case a little known salvador dali called vainants nocturns or evening strollers – and dividing it into sections, each section then reproduced by a different member of the group. media used were watercolour paint or pencils. artists found it a real challenge to match the colours of the original which was in shades of purple, blue and cream, and to make sure all the separate sections aligned together, but enjoyed the challenge and the way this gave an insight into how a professional artist approaches colour and composition. the resulting creation will be displayed at the emsworth community centre once it reopens, and the group hope to be exhibiting as part of the emsworth art trail 2021 at the same venue. the group can be contacted through emsworth community centre. vainants nocturns or evening strollers by salvador dali – divided into 12 sections, each reproduced by a different member of the emsworth friday art group group who meet weekly on friday mornings at the community centre.

my Journey to the 'dark side' for a long time i looked down on electric bikes and their users . to me they were not 'real' bikes. however, other well regarded members of our cycle club adopted electric and their credibility as long standing traditional cyclists gave strength to the electric movement. at the same time i was finding my ability to climb hills and to keep up with the rest of the group was becoming a problem for me. rather than give up group cycling all together i opted to just do shorter and flatter rides as long as i was able to do so. eventually i resolved to join the ebikers when i had reached a key age, leaving it as long as i could to enable the

By the time i reached 80, i'd had a heart operation and although i was riding at my own pace it was obvious that it was only pride and stubbornness holding me back from getting electric assistance

at this time one of our e-bikers got a new bike and loaned me his old one. although the battery was on the way out, it was enough for me to decide what i wanted and how to use it. i did not want a bike with a motor that would just take over, but something to give me a little bit of help on the hard bits (the hills). i chose one of the conversion systems where my existing bike was fitted with a new front wheel which has the motor in the hub, so the rest of the bike is exactlyhow i have always ridden it. the seat, handlebars and pedal position is either how i set it up years ago, or how i have got used to it. anyway, its my old bike. on some e-bikes the battery is on the rear carrier, which alters the weight distribution and the

balance, but on this conversion the battery is fixed to the frame between the handlebars and the pedals. this is nearly central so the balance is maintained. the finished bike has five levels of assistance, and i have set it on level 1, the minimum, and the result is just what i needed. it is as though my legs were ten years younger. i still have to pedal to make it go, and on the hills i have to work a bit hard, and even get out of breath sometimes but i wanted to still claim i was riding and getting the exercise we all need. so, that is my journey to the dark side, and 'may the force be with me' for a long time.

Q now that we are encouraged to cycle as a family is there any guidance on riding as a group on paths shared with pedestrians ? a it's a delight to see families cycling together, especially with young children, but you are right – there can be an issue with other users of these paths if you are not riding in the road. its all down to common courtesy really, but to spell it out, what do two family groupsof pedestrians do if they meet? imagine two parents, a buggy and a toddler meeting another, similar group coming the other way on a six foot wide footpath. neither group expects to just barge through and force the other to stand aside and back into the hedge, do they? normally, they'd drop back to single

file , tell the toddler to do the same , and rein in the dog if they have one. thats essentially what cyclists should do and if they are coming up behind a group, ring their bells. a lot of family cycling groups will have young, inexperienced riders and of course they are often concentrating on the basics of riding a bike – keeping balanced on two wheels (four if they have stabilisers) – steering and sometimes looking down to see where the pedals are for their feet. expecting them to be aware of other road users path is an extra “ask” so parents need to be thinking for them as well, and giving instructions we also need to watch out for random novice riders coming the other way. its a good opportunity to start basic road

rules – keep left , that way we don’t bump into each other ! it will soon become automatic to move to the left of oncoming “traffic”. when riding as a young family it is recommended that an adult or older child leads the way, with a responsible adult rider at the back to keep an eye on the youngsters. this automatically lends itself to single file riding. with more confident riders they may want to ride side by side and chat, as pedestrians do, and why not on a social ride not on the carriageway? that's fine as long as you are all aware of other people and keep your group tidy and courteous to others. even adult, club cyclists keep their group tidy and drop into single file in traffic. so that's it, just be kind to each other, and enjoy riding safely.

lockdown eases and the rnli are busier with incidents

the hayling island rnli lifeboat has been busier as the fine weather and easing of restrictions has an immediate impact. since the easing of lockdown, with the harbour and beaches open and travel not restricted we have had a flurry of call-outs. we have looked for vulnerable 7 yr olds who were both found safe ashore, and 4 young paddle boarders stuck on a lee shore were about to be taken aboard when their parents turned up to take them home!! a speedboat skipper drove his boat up the beach and an altercation took place so we stood offshore until all was well and then helped to secure the boat. the following weekend a jet-ski broke down at the mouth of chichester harbour and the skipper was picked up out of the water by the harbour patrol. two fishermen in a small dinghy and in gusty ne winds capsized and didn’t have lifejackets on. one made it ashore with the help of a sailing dinghy but the other fisherman, heavy with wet clothing was taken onto the lifeboat and transferred to Bosham Quay. an ambulance was attending and checked the two men who were able to go home. once again we make the plea to wear lifejackets when on any kind of watercraft.

Swimwear for your shape even though holidays are not currently on the agenda, that doesn’t mean we can’t look forward to the future, or pretend the garden’s a beach… so, with that in mind, i’ve put together a brief guide detailing the very best swimwear styles for your body shape.

hourglass first of all, if you have an hourglass figure, then lucky you. this means that you really are in proportion and your shoulders are balanced with your hips and your waist is quite narrow, think 1950s siren. in regard to swimwear, you have quite a few options that will work for you. halter neck swimsuit - this style will really enhance your figure, while supporting your bust at the same time. with a halter neck, you can adjust the tie to tighten or loosen if need be, which is great for added comfort. opt for a plunging halter neck costume as this will make your

boobies look great! where do i get one from? depending on your bust size, marks & spencer’s have an array of different swimsuits, and they last for ages! don’t be put off by the brand’s older demographic, they have definitely upped their game in recent years, and they have many nice and on-trend designs. Bravissimo are also amazing! they have different styles and sizes for all kinds of shapes and sizes - totally recommend, plus love their whole ethos. other brands that have good swimwear in this style are: topshop, river island, John lewis and figleaves (online)

pear shape now, if you’re a pear shape, finding the right swimwear is no easy feat. as you are narrower up top and bigger at the bottom, you want to create some kind of balance. for this, i would actually opt for a two-piece. go for high rise bottoms that

tie-up at the side, as these will elongate your legs and can be adjusted at the side and will very rarely dig in at the sides. for the top, i would actually avoid a halter neck bikini top and opt for a square neck, strappy top. this will make your shoulders appear more in line with your bottom half due to the straight/square shape. if you would prefer an all-in-one suit, then go for one with a similar neckline and strap. where do i get one from? next do great onepieces which come with belts to help you create more of a waist. again, marks & spencer has a good range. i would also take a look at smaller brands, one of the suits below is from a brand called eloquii. you can also try triumph, who also do really good underwear too.

bags of help leads to bags of craft the coronavirus lockdown has seen a surge in households looking to fill their unexpected extra time pursuing craft activities, and havant-based craft organisation making space is bringing craft to local people thanks to support from artswork and tesco’s Bags of help fund. the arts council england strategy for the next 10 years is called lets create, with a real emphasis on community engagement. this is a major part of what making space, a registered charity does - engaging with the local community and connecting people through craft. in partnership with artswork, and supported by a grant from tesco’s Bags of help, making space has been distributing craft kits to families using the local foodbank. these #letscreate packs have been supported by arts council england via artswork the south east Bridge. the kits include everything needed for eleven different craft activities, along with templates and instructions. filled with pens, card, wool, scissors, paints, brushes and more, each kit will enable families to create greetings cards, felt bunting, pompoms, bracelets and more. ami hyde, outreach project manager at making space, has been putting the kits

together. she said: “we know how beneficial craft can be for people’s mental wellbeing so it’s not surprising people are turning to making during such a challenging time. as people can’t come to us at the moment, we wanted to take craft out to people and this support from tesco and artswork has enabled us to do just that.” the first batch of kits has been distributed to 30 local households, and making space has received further funding from the arts council to distribute approximately 300 more kits to pupils attending leigh park schools in July.

rosés are often looked upon as a safe and easy option when choosing a wine, especially on a lazy hot summers afternoon. its true to say that sales rocket during the summer months and the wine will always be associated with that time of year. But increasingly, sales are continuing at a steady rate all year round as consumers look at a more refreshing wine and wine makers produce more food friendly styles.years ago it used to be associated with cheap wines but the quality is now there to see and prices reflect that. according to nielsen, sales are worth nearly £1.8 million per day. so why is the wine so popular with British consumers? firstly, a lot of wines available today can be around 13 to14% alcohol, which for many people can be too strong. typically, twenty years ago, wines were only at 11 to 12% and many wine makers today are bringing the level of alcohol in rosé back to that mark. secondly, there are a several different styles of rosé wines available and these depend on where in the world they come from. californian rosé tends to be on the sweeter side with confected fruit on the palate. australian rosé is often robust and fuller flavoured with a darker hint and from provence in the south of france, they are bone dry, crisp and fresh and a lot lighter in colour. this is the style that is proving the most popular with today’s consumers. how the wine is made determines the colour and style of

Tomato Salsa & fried Jersey Royal Potatoes

e are fortunate to be surrounded by fantastic producers who create the finest ingredients. locally sourced, they are fresh, nutritious and because the taste is so good, cooking is remarkably simple. many of these producers (such as chalk-stream trout and the tomato stall) were supplying restaurants with most of recipe- serves 2 ingredients: • 2 chalkstream trout fillets • 1 lemon • 400g isle of wight cherry tomatoes • ½ avocado • 400g Jersey royal potatoes • cold pressed rapeseed oil 2tbsp • ½ fresh chilli • flat leaf parsley (small bunch chopped) • 1 tsp. smoked paprika • seasoning method: cut the Jersey royal potatoes in half and boil in salted water for 12 minutes or

their output but have had to adapt very quickly to the new corona climate. small, independent shops have taken up some of the slack, and you can now get many amazing ingredients delivered to your door. it may not be the same as going to a restaurant, but with the right ingredients, simply cooked, you can enjoy a serious feast while supporting your local producers. until tender and drain. remove the chalkstream trout fillets from its packaging and pat dry. then salt the skin side. dice the tomatoes and avocado in a small bowl, add finely chopped chilli to taste, then mix with 2 tbsp of rapeseed oil and the juice of half the lemon and season. slice the potatoes, season and fry in 2 tablespoons of oil over medium-high heat. flip as they start to brown and then add the smoked paprika. fry the trout fillets skin side down in a little oil for 3-4 minutes over medium heat. then turn and continue to fry for another 90 seconds. remove from the heat, plate up with the new potatoes and top with chopped parsley, lemon juice and the tomato salsa.

thousands of new trees to create memorial woodland for havant the scheme, which is part of the overall reservoir project, will see more than three thousand trees planted by the summer, creating an enhanced green space just of swanmore road in warren park, next to where the reservoir is set to be built. the aim is to give local people a place to visit for quiet reflection, in particular, to remember family, friends and others who have passed away. at the same time, the additional trees will create a valuable new wildlife habitat, providing connection between other areas of woodland nearby and further afield. this means that birds and mammals, such as dormice and bats, will be able to move around and feed more easily. creating a memorial woodland is the brainchild of councillor prad Bains, havant

Borough’s deputy mayor. councillor Bains said: "the planting of the memorial woodland offers a peaceful place, accessible to all, that enhances local biodiversity and wildlife. importantly, we want the woodland to be a further way of commemorating those who served in the two world wars and other conflicts and we are developing a plan around this. this includes an educational aspect, teaching young people about our area’s connection to the armed forces and their service for our country. it’s a real privilege to have seen this project literally grow and i can’t wait for everyone to be able to enjoy this pocket of beauty in havant”. tracey viney, environment & Biodiversity specialist at portsmouth water, also commented: “we are delighted to be working with havant Borough council to

create a really special place for people to enjoy for decades to come. as part of our havant thicket reservoir scheme, the new woodland will provide an improved space in which to enjoy nature and take the time to think and remember loved ones and others. it will also be a real boost for the local environment, with natural england and hampshire & isle of wight wildlife trust both supportive of our plans.” a mixture of different types of trees will be planted, including 100 that are already three metres high, which will help the woodland to establish a good structure more quickly. the trees will also be protected by deer fencing. the havant thicket site is owned by portsmouth water and is currently mainly made up of grazed grassland, with small

areas of trees. it’s open to the public to walk in, watch birds and explore, via a network of paths. the existing access paths will remain open. the company has included a proposal to build a reservoir on the site in its future plans to increase the resilience of water supplies in the water-stressed south east and provide new wetland wildlife habitats and community and leisure facilities. THE CAT & RABBIT RESCUE CENTRE hulky bear

hello from your favourite out and about reporter at the cat and rabbit rescue centre, hulky Bear. it’s been a bit of a sad time here for us out and abouter’s the past couple of weeks as sadly we had to say goodbye to our good friend mooma (katrina). mooma was the queen of us resident cats, she was 20 years old and had

lived here at the centre for about 19 years!! we all got along great with her, snuggling up together on the sofa in our rooms and all coming and begging the staff for some chicken at the front doors of the viv eadon building. my good pal axyl will really miss her lots as they were a couple of lovebirds those two! he followed her everywhere and they were regularly caught head bumping each other or rubbing alongside each other. my staff are missing her greatly too, they say she used to make them laugh

with her sassy nature and her sweet little meow. we hope she rests in peace now along with all our other former friends we’ve said goodbye to over the years. in other news here at the centre though, my staff are busy preparing the place ready to start rehoming again! they are making sure that all social distancing measures are put in place and that they’ve got their protective equipment at hand. i’m not going to lie, some of them do look a little silly with their masks on, but apparently

local food bank’s award-winning covid-19 response 13ank has been supported by community first to operate foodbank three days a week from leigh park community centre.their lunchbank po9 project is preparing and delivering hot meals from bedhampton community centre, run by the bedhampton community association.

13ank projects support the community of leigh park, one of the country’s largest and most economically challenged housing estates. 100% of the effort on the ground comes from volunteers, who organise food parcels at leigh park community centre and cooked meal deliveries through lunchBank po9 at Bedhampton community centre. foodBank and lunchBank operate entirely with volunteers on the ground and, until recently, they served the local community with no grant funding. now, 13ank’s projects are supported by a grant from havant Borough council, as well as £500 from greggs to cover volunteer fuel expenses. her fundraising efforts is just one example of the brilliant ways that key workers are supporting each other during this challenging time. community first, a hampshire-wide voluntary sector support charity, are also staffing leigh park

brent lodge briefings – be alert for wildlife in danger as the year starts to pick up pace the spring days turn into warmer summer days – bringing a noticeable increase of wildlife activity. many species are adapting to a warmer climate and try to keep pace with the changes and timings of life cycle events. they are experiencing extended periods of breeding or nesting and migration triggers which can take its toll on many wildlife parents. the wildlife hospital in sidlesham, west sussex remains open to take in wildlife casualty admissions as the seasonal sick, injured or orphaned wildlife casualties continue to keep the animal care staff busy. this young brood of shelducks were sadly left abandoned when their mum never returned. they are doing well and have moved out of the incubators to one of our outside enclosures. wildlife mothers can easily be spooked if they feel threatened, it is best to leave mother and ducklings alone if they are finding their way to water, because interference can cause extra stress and risk the mother panicking and abandoning her

s w e Park Community School N MUCH MORE THAN JUST A SCHOOL Park Community Schools Design and Technology Department supported the fight against Covid-19 by producing face shields for the NHS. The first batch of face shields were delivered to a very grateful St. Peters Surgery in Woolston to further protect the staff from the virus. We have since managed to deliver 10 masks to Bosmere Surgery, fulfilled requests through our Facebook page and are aiming to deliver 20 to a Care Home in Emsworth - this most recent batch of 20 are the laser cut versions that will be made by key worker children with Mr Green. Wonderful to receive so many grateful comments:

local care company raises over £1,500 for the alzheimer’s society for the second year running right at home has managed to raise over £1,500 for the alzheimer’s society. it’s a year since the care company, based in havant, successfully completed a 34 mile walk where they raised £1,500 for the dementia charity. this year, due to the coronavirus and social distancing restrictions, duncan cameron - pictured above - right at home havant’s director, took on a new challenge to run 100 miles over a 30 day period. when asked about the achievement he said, “the last few months have been a very challenging time for everyone with the coronavirus pandemic hitting our communities but especially those living with dementia. our care team are very aware of the pressures caused by isolation for those living with dementia, so it felt right to try to raise funds again for such a worthy charity

stop domestic abuse shares in £10 million fund to support victims a local charity supporting victims and survivors of domestic abuse has secured £291,608 from the ministry of housing, communities & local government’s domestic abuse safe accommodation: mhclg covid-19 emergency support fund which is part of the government’s package of support for the most vulnerable in society. this funding will ensure that stop domestic abuse can continue operating safe accommodation services and keep bed spaces open for victims and their children fleeing from abuse during covid-19 emergency. stop domestic abuse will be able to ensure that safe accommodation services can help more victims access these life-saving services. within these funds the government recognise the need to protect specialist domestic abuse providers such as stop domestic abuse which provide traumainformed services to those affected by domestic abuse. stop domestic abuse led a consortium bid with their specialist domestic abuse partners andover crisis support centre and the hampton trust.this funding will support a further 360 victims of domestic abuse and their

children across portsmouth and hampshire. stop domestic abuse currently provide 13 refuges (over 16 premises) in hampshire and portsmouth supporting 89 women with their children at any one time. since 23 march 2020: • stop domestic abuse referrals have increased 11.5% compared to february 2019.

• national domestic abuse helpline has seen a 66% increase in calls.

• self-referrals to stop domestic abuse increased 37.5% in may. stop domestic abuse expect referrals for help and support to continue to increase as there are more opportunities to leave the home: schools re-open, a&e and gp visits return to normal levels, health visitors and social workers resume home visits and other agencies resume normal service. claire lambon ceo says@ “we are delighted to be successful in this round of funding in order to continue our

crucial and lifesaving work delivering refuge accommodation. as ‘lockdown’ is eased; those victims that have been forced into lockdown with a perpetrator of domestic abuse will have more opportunities to seek help and it is vital that we are adequately resourced to meet their needs. however, this funding is both short-term and for safe accommodation. Both our refuge and community-based resources need to be adequately funded moving forward as the long-term trauma impact on women, children, young people and men living with domestic abuse during ‘lockdown’ will be significant. the effects of lock down will be felt in domestic abuse services for years. we are continuing to deliver services across portsmouth and hampshire and our refuges remainl open. please do contact us for help and support. our vision is a world without domestic abuse. we will not stop until domestic abuse does”. all of stop domestic abuse’s refuges remain open and can be accessed 24 hrs by calling 033 0016 5112 and following

motiv8 Update dear partners, supporters and families, we are striving to fulfil our mission to ‘support young people and their families in the community, building trusting relationships to help equip them with the skills, resilience and opportunities to thrive’. at motiv8 we have updated our 5-year strategic plan from 2019 – 2024 and you can read a full copy on our website. now more than ever, we believe our plan is the right one to ensure that we are able to respond to our local communities. we are committed to constantly reviewing our provision in line with government guidance alongside supporting young people and families when they need it most. lockdown is only the start of more challenges for young people and their families; building upon over 20 years of experience of supporting the community we will continue to take a long term commitment. how have motiv8 been supporting local young people and families? in the last three months, we have grown and adapted our services to ensure young people and families can continue to access support, advice, and guidance.young people

have been gaining skills, connecting to opportunities, and improving their emotional well-being and resilience. we have strived to do this in the following ways: • moved to a digital one-to-one mentoring support offer for all young people.

• extended support through messaging, telephone calls, email and through video meetings to all families that need support.

• assisted young people and families in gaining access to tablets/ipad's with connection to the internet so that they can complete school work and receive mental health and well-being activities from their support workers.

• created group online positive activities for young people and families which are easily accessible. this includes: creative writing, quizzes, competitions, emotional health and well-being peer support, and weekly bulletins with helpful links and information.

• provided online employment support for young people worried about their future employment and education opportunities.

• we have undertaken emergency welfare visits where there are significant safeguarding concerns.

• in partnership with our funders hampshire and isle of wight community foundation, wave 105 cash for kids, hive portsmouth, neighbourly, and tesco we have been able to support local families experiencing extreme financial hardship through the purchase and delivery of food parcels, educational resources, positive well-being activities, and assistance with utility bills.

• with the relaxing of social distancing measures, we have introduced a ‘walk and talk’ service and additional detached (on street) provision enabling face-toface meetings with young people whilst maintaining a social distance.

• our social enterprise Bicycle recycling has continued to provide key worker servicing for bikes through the portsmouth city council ‘Bike dr’ scheme. this has enabled key workers to travel to and from work. thank you to our staff and volunteers we wish to celebrate and thank our staff
