Actor Robbie Amell on ‘Racewalkers,’ returning home and his Muskoka dream Toronto’s Robbie Amell stars in the offbeat comedy Race- It’s a feel-good escape movie, and I really recommend seeing it walkers, which is set to hit Canadian theatres July 10. in a group. It’s just more fun that way — everyone reacting together makes it better.

What was your first reaction when you read the script?

It really reminded me of movies I grew up on — Happy Gilmore and Cool Runnings — but also had a bit of Ted Lasso in it, while still feeling very original. It was just one of those things where I thought, “This is great. This is everything I love about a sports comedy.”

What made Racewalkers feel like such perfect material for an offbeat comedy?

It’s a bit like Ted Lasso — that really funny, offbeat comedy where suddenly you’re getting emotional because they sneak in that heartfelt side so well. That’s what this felt like. And for me, it was also just a chance to work with guys I think are super talented and will have long careers. My role was fun too — I was the Shooter McGavin of the race walking world.

Your debut, Cheaper by the Dozen 2, was shot in Muskoka. What do you recall about that experience?

It was shot at Stony Lake, and my mom’s best friend had a cottage there, so I actually knew the lake really well. It was one of those strange coincidences. Even other locations were places my mom grew up visiting. It felt very serendipitous. It was also an amazing experience — one day I’d be on a water trampoline, another day on a Jet Ski. I didn’t realize how good I had it.

How did Toronto shape you, and what was it like moving to L.A.?

I grew up in North York. My mom raised my sister and me, and she’s one of the kindest people I know. I grew up playing hockey, went to school in North York, and originally thought I’d go into sports medicine or kinesiology. And the connection has only grown stronger.

My connection to the area doesn’t go back that far. As a kid, my cottaging was more about the Great Lakes and sandy beaches. Forests and canoes? Not so much. But a few decades ago, it happened.

And it’s been a part of my life ever since.

It’s a region that is just incredibly beautiful. The water is magical.

Yes, it’s busy, and there are amazing restaurants and boutiques and golf courses. But, it’s more than that. It’s that link to the city. It’s the tradition. It’s that night that the crowd was dancing so much at a Spirit of the West show that the floor caved in at the Kee to Bala.

It’s celebrating an anniversary aboard the Segwun touring the lakes.

It’s David Beckham jet skiing on the same lake as a local dentist.

It’s the beauty. Just everywhere.

And, yes, it’s Webers. Don’t @ me.

Ours is a throwaway culture. That even applies to houses. When homes or buildings are demolished to make way for a road, condo development or another house or building, the materials and contents are usually sent to the landfill. As with other characteristics of our consumer-driven societies, it’s wrong.

Many components — wood, concrete, bricks, metal, plastic, vinyl — can be reused, repurposed or recycled. In some cases, entire houses are moved to another location and fixed up rather than being demolished. The

think tank Light House estimates about 20 per cent of demolished homes here could have been moved and another 60 per cent could have been deconstructed, with materials reused or recycled.

The problem isn’t just the waste of good materials.

Some municipalities are finally seeing the value in keeping materials out of landfills, implementing bylaw and regulation changes to encourage salvaging and recycling. It’s about time!

A 2025 Australian study notes that disposing of construction and demolition waste in landfills “has been widely recognized as a source of leachate, containing toxic contam-

inants, which pose significant environmental risks.”

Diverting construction materials has many benefits. The building and construction sector accounts for about 37 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, with close to one-third of that from the energy used to produce materials for a building. Reclaiming wood is also especially beneficial. It means no trees have to be cut down, leaving them to sequester climate-altering carbon dioxide.

The bottom line rarely underlines the most environmentally sustainable path.

Homes and buildings are a good place to start.

Deconstruction should be mandatory.

You can take my freedom, but Sneaky Dee’s?

Toronto is supposed to be a music city. The world, well, look around, we need entertainment. We need live music because it’s part of our history, and it provides a shared experience that brings people together. And I got news for ya, not everyone can afford to drop $500 on a pair of tickets to a concert. Most assuredly not anyone under 25 trying to get by in a city this expensive.

But there has been a slow and steady decline in live music venues in this city, the clubs that offer this affordable alternative, and it has gone on too long.

The latest casualty, potentially, is Sneaky Dee’s. Yes, that Sneaky Dee’s. A great live music bar for new bands to connect with new audiences and have those experiences. It is threatened, like so many good things, with destruction to make way for a condominium development.

Yes, people need to live somewhere. I guess that’s why the pro-

vincial government is bending over backwards to let the industry do whatever and build wherever it wants. Live music venues apparently don’t provide jobs or contribute to the economy, so are unworthy of support. But we all know that is just wrong on so many levels.

Sometimes these buildings are bought and sold, fall down. It’s true. But the city has long had a committee dedicated to this issue, and still dozens of venues have closed.

We need to make sure our culture remains. We need to save what makes this city so special before it’s all gone. That means action. At least this issue has galvanized a youth movement against this development.

It’s a beginning and hopefully not the end of Sneaky Dee’s.

Residents angry about vacant half-built homes

Empty and partially completed houses are becoming an increasingly common source of frustration in some of Toronto’s established neighbourhoods.

One recent example is a home at 321 Laird Dr. in Leaside that has sat vacant or under construction for roughly six years. Neighbours say the property highlights a broader issue of homes being left unfinished for years at a time, creating eyesores and disrupting residential streets. There is a similar house at 21 Macpherson Ave. in Summerhill that local residents indicate has been sitting empty, partially constructed, for years.

According to a report, the Leaside home has been under construction for about six years, and neighbours are fed up.The home on Laird Drive was sold to its current owner in 2020 for about $1.4 million. In 2024, Committee of Adjustment refused a minor variance application for 321 Laird Dr. that would have allowed a two-storey addition exceeding several zoning limits — including lot coverage, side wall height, building length and front stair encroachments — finding that the proposal did not maintain the intent of the official plan or zoning bylaw, was not desirable for the site and was not minor

in nature.

The owner appealed to the Toronto Local Appeal Body and won the right to convert the bungalow into a multiplex. The City of Toronto issued a building permit, but neighbours say that since the property was sold it has either been vacant or under construction, with work happening only sporadically.

“Since then the building has sat, exposed and unprotected, deteriorating through three winters,” said Geoff Ketel, of the Federation of North Toronto Residents’ Association.

“This deterioration led to the second issue: the dilapidated state of the building and the property and the inability of the City to do anything about it.”

Rick Price of the Leaside Residents Association spoke out against the home and called it an “eyesore.”

“Houses being built shouldn't take years and years and years,” he said.

The Leaside property is just one example of a larger issue playing out across Toronto, even though the city introduced a Vacant Home Tax in 2022 as part of an effort to encourage owners to rent out empty homes or face a financial penalty.

Saxe argued that the changes would improve safety and traffic flow. "This parking proposal would maximize road width, improving site lines, transit operations, and unobstructed two-way traffic flow during the prohibited times," she wrote.

The councillor is also seeking a traffic-calming review of Crescent Road, with city staff directed to report back to community council in early 2027.

The proposal was split into delegated and non-delegated components. Measures under the delegated portion included the possible installation of sidewalk bollards to prevent vehicles from mounting the curb and a reduction of the speed limit to 30 km/h.

Council will revisit the matter when it returns to Toronto and East York Community Council in July.

North York General Hospital announced that it has received the largest single investment in its history, to the tune of $63.2 million.

Hospital officials said the institute will be the first dedicated centre of its kind in the Greater Toronto Area. It will bring together researchers, clinicians and technology experts to focus on preventing workplace injuries, improving recovery outcomes and studying occupational diseases.

“This Institute’s goal is simple: figure out the best ways to protect workers, save tens of thousands of lost productivity hours and free up health care capacity,” Dr. Everton Gooden, president and CEO, North York General, said. “This extraordinary partnership will not only advance research and innovation at NYG but also help to create lasting change in workplace health and safety — enabling NYG to be here for life, now and for generations to come.”

The funds are set to establish a new workplace health institute that will reduce job-related injuries and illnesses across the province.

The funding, announced June 10, comes from the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) in partnership with the

WorkSafe Ontario Fund and will support the creation of the Institute for Workplace Health at the hospital's North York campus.

The new program is set to use artificial intelligence, predictive modelling and advanced health data systems to identify injury risks and improve treatment pathways for injured workers.

According to a news release, workplace injuries are a significant issue across Ontario. The WSIB said it received approximately 235,000 claims related to work-related injuries and illnesses last year, including more than 72,000 cases that required employees to take time away from work.

As part of the investment, North York General will purchase a new CT scanner and an AI-assisted X-ray machine, technologies that hospital officials say will help improve diagnosis and treatment for common workplace injuries such as fractures.

“This is truly an investment for all Ontarians that will help prevent workplace injuries, promote recovery and manage work-related illnesses,” said WSIB president and CEO Jeff Lang.

Eglinton and Allen intersection has been a serious issue for too long

Toronto City Council has also directed staff to look at ambitious redesigns — such as a four-lane on-ramp or an interchange-style “inner loop” ramp — that could reduce congestion in a significant way.

Public consultations were held in May and June. A second phase of consultation will follow once a shorter list of options has been established.

"What I want to see come out of this is a realistic, evidencebased redesign that can help traffic flow better and more efficiently on and off the Allen at Eglinton,” said Matlow.

The opening of the Cedarvale LRT station, which includes pedestrian connections across Allen Road, is expected to ease some crossing demand, though staff acknowledges it does not resolve vehicle congestion.

A preferred design option is not expected until later phases of the study.

"Ultimately, a goal, along with a safer and more efficient intersection, is to mitigate the number of drivers that are choosing to go through our neighbourhoods," Matlow said.

Top banker says signs point to a strong 2027 for real estate The Bank of Canada (BoC) decided to hold the interest rate at 2.25 per cent for the fourth time in a row this June. We asked CIBC deputy chief economist and Real Estate Roundtable panelist Benjamin Tal what that means for the housing market.

The decision was made before this agreement between Iran and the U.S., and we don't know how sustainable that agreement is to start with, so this stroke of uncertainty is a major factor impacting energy prices, and therefore inflation.

At the same time, the economy is not strong by any stretch of the imagination. So they are buying time to get some clarity.

Where will rates go over the next six months to a year?

I believe that if it was not for the war with Iran, the Bank of Ca-

EARLY ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT: TIMING MATTERS

BIO Dr. Jordan Seetner is a certified specialist in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics and founder of Orthodontics on Queen in Toronto’s Beaches. He earned his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania and completed specialty training in orthodontics at Tufts University, Boston. A former Clinical Instructor at the University of Toronto, he is currently a Visiting Lecturer at Tufts.

A common question from parents is: “Why does one child get an orthodontic appliance at age seven, while another child waits until twelve?”

The answer is that early orthodontic treatment is not about starting braces as early as possible. It is about timing the right treatment for the right problem.

The Canadian Association of Orthodontists and the American Association of Orthodontists recommend that children have a first orthodontic check-up no later than age seven. At this age, the first adult molars and front teeth are coming in, giving the orthodontist an early view of jaw growth, bite relationships, spacing, and eruption patterns. This early visit does not mean every child needs treatment. It allows the orthodontist to separate concerns that can be monitored, from problems that may benefit from timely intervention.

Early treatment, sometimes called Phase 1 or interceptive treatment, is most valuable when growth can be used to correct a developing problem that may become harder to manage later.

Key reasons include a narrow upper jaw, a cross-

bite, a lower jaw that shifts when biting, severe crowding that blocks adult teeth, impacted or poorly erupting teeth, protrusive front teeth at risk of trauma, or oral habits such as thumb-sucking that are affecting jaw or tooth position.

In these situations, an appliance such as an expander, limited braces, space maintainer, or habit appliance may help guide growth, create space, improve function, and reduce the chance of more complex treatment later. The goal is not perfection at age eight. The goal is to remove the roadblock so the child can continue developing in a healthier direction.

Many orthodontic concerns are better treated later, often around ages eleven to thirteen, once more adult teeth have erupted. Mild crowding, routine alignment, and many bite corrections can be handled more efficiently in one comprehensive phase later.

SCIENCE OVER SENSATIONALISM: THE TRUTH ABOUT ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

In healthcare, misinformation can be as harmful as disease itself. Despite decades of scientific research demonstrating its safety and effectiveness, myths about root canal therapy continue to circulate. As clinicians, we have a responsibility to address misinformation directly as it creates unnecessary fear and can cause patients to delay or avoid care that could preserve their natural teeth and protect their overall health.

Much of the controversy surrounding root canal treatment can be traced to the discredited focal infection theory. This early idea suggested that bacteria left behind after a root canal procedure could travel through the body and cause disease. Subsequent studies using modern research standards disproved the theory and restored confidence in endodontic treatment.

Despite overwhelming scientific evidence, outdated ideas occasionally resurface, particularly online. Such claims ignore decades of peer reviewed research demonstrating the safety and success of root canal treatment. The scientific. literature shows that untreated dental infections pose a far greater risk to health than teeth that

have been properly treated with root canal therapy. Eliminating infection while preserving the natural tooth helps reduce inflammation and supports long term oral health.

Modern root canal therapy is based on sound biological principles and advanced technology.

The procedure involves removing infected tissue inside the tooth, disinfecting the root canal system, and sealing it with a biocompatible material to prevent reinfection. Long-term success also depends on placing a well-designed restoration afterward to protect the tooth and prevent bacteria from re-entering. Advances in imaging technology, specialized instruments, and modern techniques have dramatically improved the precision and predictability of endodontic care.

Root canal treatment remains one of the most predictable procedures in dentistry, performed safely millions of times a year. The science is clear. When infection threatens a tooth, preserving that tooth through modern root canal therapy is one of the most predictable and responsible treatments in dentistry.

The Westies is the new crime show from Narcos creator, Chris Brancato, and we caught up with Irish-Canadian star Vincent Walsh to get the scoop on gang drama, J. K. Simmons and filming in a full suit during Toronto’s hottest season.

Water for Elephants, a Broadway musical based on Sara Gruen’s bestselling novel, comes to the CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre from July 7 to 19.

Dream in High Park is back with Twelfth Night, opening July 12 and running until Sept.

Ossington is making its way north once again! In June, Summerhill got yet another export from Toronto’s trendiest district.

Seagrave’s (formerly known as I Miss You Man, brother store to I Miss You Vintage) has officially opened on Yonge Street with an elegant cherry red storefront and dark wood interior.

The men’s consignment store is the latest in a series of new openings in the neighbourhood coming directly from Ossington. And owner John Seagrave has a theory about that.

“I've been looking at locations for a couple of years now, and I’ve been trying to find a pocket that had a similar kind of energy to Ossington, a little bit more neighbourhoody,” he says. “Toronto’s coolest street” may have changed quite a bit over the past few years, but Seagrave has been there for more than a decade. “It wasn’t traditionally a shopping destination. And that’s true for Summerhill too: it feels more

like a neighbourhood and not just a shopping destination.”

Seagrave says that since officially signing off on the new location, he’s already heard about countless new stores opening — pointing to designer department store–style shop Absolutely Fabrics opening up the road in the fall as an example.

“It's exciting to see how much more is coming to the neighbourhood. We're in a fun little

pocket where we have just a couple stores on our little block, and we’re pretty much the only menswear here, so we have our nice little niche,” he says.

Since opening in Summerhill, Seagrave has also learned that many of the clients who consigned with I Miss You Man over the years happen to live in the neighbourhood. “They’ve happened upon me here in Summerhill and are like, ‘Oh,

you’re here now!’ So it’s almost like we’re bringing it to them.”

As owner of one of the first menswear-focused consignment shops in the city, Seagrave says he’s certainly noticed a “shift” over the years in attitudes toward buying second-hand.

“People are becoming more conscious about where they're getting their clothing. And I think the value factor is a big win too. If you can recycle and renew your wardrobe and get good quality pieces in for not too much more than you'd be spending at the mall, it's a compelling argument to shop in that way,” he says.

He notes that over the years, shoppers have become younger and not just because of shifting demographics in Ossington. “It’s noticeable, seeing younger people buy this level of clothing.

I certainly wasn’t when I was a teenager. They’re more inclined to buy vintage, for sure, and maybe instead of buying the

vintage T, they’re going for the luxury resale T instead.”

Inside Seagrave, you’ll find a whole host of highly coveted brands, ranging from Rick Owens and Maison Margiela to Prada and Thom Browne. And while prices can go as high as $8,995 for a 1957 Rolex, you can find a ton of quality pieces for under $100, like a Stussy knit polo or a Universal Works overshirt.

Plenty of work went into the construction of the new Summerhill shop, including the design, led by Seagrave's wife and Studio MAD founder Michelle Agnew Also sprinkled throughout the space is furniture sourced vintage from a friend of Sea-grave’s — the chairs at the back of the shop, near the change rooms, are for sale like the rest of the store.

My siblings are total cottage freeloaders Dear Sangita: I share a cottage with my siblings, and I'm tired of doing all the work, only for them to barge in and demand their time over the summer.

We inherited it from our parents and agreed to split the time — and the work. My siblings do no maintenance.

They don't even think about it during the off season and pretty much expect that it'll be in perfect condition when they arrive for their weeks in the summer. Meanwhile, I'm shelling out lots of money and time all year round to make sure it’s ready for the summer. How do I tell them to hit the trail?

— Cottage control Dear CC: You sound like an oldest sibling! Instead of talking about money and cost, I would break it down in terms of what it takes for you to take care of the cottage — gardening, equipment upgrades, painting, whatever it is.

Start a group chat with your siblings and ask them to step up for certain tasks. This is probably the time to lie a little about your availability: “Hey, I can’t make it next week, and there’s someone coming to repair the porch. Can someone be there?” If they don’t step up, you can look back in that chat and say: “Hey, I asked for help on x, y and z, and none of you guys did anything.” The other part you might not want to admit here is that, as the sibling who is always in charge, you might be used to doing things a certain way. If your siblings start stepping up, you’ll have to let go a little bit. It might not be done exactly the way you want it to, but that’s a sacrifice you need to make if you don’t want to be handling everything forever.

She’s really questioning herself and doesn’t feel like she’s the person for you, so she’s trying to adjust her ways. The best you can do for her is provide that reassurance that you love her just the way she is — but it’s also time to have an honest conversation about this fixation on your exes.

Country crooner traded in a solo act for the best duet of his life Canadian country music artist Owen Riegling has gone from growing up on a 100-acre farm in Ontario to opening for top country acts to his own Canadian headlining tour In The Feeling, in support of his latest album.

The tour includes a stop at the Kee to Bala on July 26. Ahead of his cottage country show, he told us the story of meeting his wife, Olivia (Liv), and their nostalgic farm wedding.

How did you meet?

We even got to celebrate our one-year wedding anniversary together last year when I performed at Boots & Hearts Music Festival here in Ontario and she was there with me.

We are obsessed with our dog, we love travelling together and going on hikes. We hike wherever we can on the road.

Spain’s popular empanadas land in Yorkville Yorkville has a colourful new addition, thanks to a European import that's bringing a fresh take on lunch.

Las Muns, a Spanish-born empanada giant with a massive 50-location cult following across Spain, Italy and Portugal, has officially moved into the neighbourhood. Rather than importing frozen products, Las Muns has established a local production facility, where its pastries are made in Canada using recipes adapted slightly for the North American market.

The first thing you'll notice is the colour. Las Muns' empanadas come in a rainbow of shades that look more like a paint swatch than a pastry case, but the colours come

The menu blends traditional Latin American flavours with more global

influences. One standout is the northern Argentinian-style steak and egg empanada, filled with cubed beef, sautéed onions and hard-boiled egg.

You’ll also want to save room for the dessert rotation, which cleverly repackages classic confections into the Las Muns signature dough.

There’s the dulce-banana — a nod to the founders' Argentine roots that pairs sliced fruit with ooey-gooey dulce de leche — and a localized apple pie version that swaps out standard sugar for a splash of Canadian maple syrup, making it feel right at home in Toronto.

Las Muns, located at 1250 Bay St., is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Globally inspired bar opens on Ossington Another cocktail spot has joined Ossington's lineup. Bambú is now open above Bowie in the former Bonito space, serving food and drinks with a fresh new vibe.

"Bowie is our moody, sultry basement hideaway.” says owner Adrian Montesdeoca. "Bambú is the high-energy, complementing counterpart to that. It lives upstairs, it’s bathed in tropical accents, and it’s much more upbeat from the jump.”

Montesdeoca explains that accessible innovation is the cornerstone of Bambú’s cocktail program, and the food offerings serve as an edible map of Toronto, offering dishes that can be found across the city, from Bò Tái Chanh to the Doubles, Even the name is intentional: It's inspired by the vibe of the space, which has a lot of bamboo, a plant that's native to Asia, Africa, North America, South America and Australia.

"It literally covers almost the entire globe, mirroring the exact regions and cultures our chef draws inspiration from for the menu," Montesdeoca says. "We gave it the Spanish spelling, Bambú, to add that extra bit of warmth and realized it felt like the ultimate, globe-trotting cousin to Bowie. It’s the perfect counterpart."
