Three things you didn’t know about this month’s cover. Until now. 1. For the past few years, we have reached out to artists to design our December cover of Rochester Magazine. This year, we found Troy Becker, an illustrator and graphic artist who works for our parent company, Forum Communications. And who has strong ties to Mayo Clinic (and for more info on the Plummer Building’s Christmas tree lighting, check out our Short Cuts section). 2. “The image on the cover is special to me for a very personal reason,” says Troy. “In December of 2016, I had a brain tumor removed at Mayo. Whether it was at the clinic, hotels, restaurants or various businesses—all the people of Rochester made me feel comfortable. I still make yearly visits to Mayo around this time of year. Making the city look cheerful during the holidays is important. I hope my cover shares in the sense of wonder.” 3. We definitely think it does. And a little more about Troy, right from his bio: Troy Becker was born and raised in New York Mills, Minn. His affinity for drawing and comics brought him to Concordia where he earned a B.A. in art and communications. After a few stints in Minneapolis, Connecticut, and Wisconsin he moved to the Fargo-Moorhead area where he now lives with his lovely wife and three busy children. He is currently an illustrator and graphic artist for The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead. He has taught at MSUM as an adjunct professor, and he produces work on commissions. Mania: The ABBA Tribute comes to Civic Center 2 HOURS. The average Mania: The ABBA Tribute concert lasts two hours and features more than a dozen ABBA songs including “Mamma Mia,” “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight,” and “Take a Chance on Me.” The band also goes through several costume changes to replicate some of ABBA’s grooviest ensembles. 4 SINGERS. ABBA was made up of Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad (the first letters of their names spell out ABBA). They are currently played by

wanted me to keep the tradition going. So, for the past few years, I’ve spent a week or so on a solo motorcycle trip. On this beautiful Sunday in late October, I still had not taken a motorcycle trip this year. My wife Lindy and I were working in the yard.

Sunday, Oct. 22, noon.: Every year, from 2005 through 2019 (when his 85-year-old back no longer let him ride), my dad and I took a long distance motorcycle trip together.

“These could be the last few nice days of the year,” she said. “And you never took a motorcycle trip.” I was on the road an hour later.

In the morning, I walk into the campground bathroom. There’s one other guy in there, and he glances up at me like I’m covered in black mold. When I look in the mirror, I realize why. My emergency sweatshirt is covered in spots that look to be black mold. I’m guessing it was wet when I last put it away. Three years ago. Day Two: I ride south along the Mississippi on the Great River Road. The fall colors are phenomenal. I stop at every historical marker and overlook along the way. Finally end up in Hannibal, Missouri, the home of Mark Twain.

We rode our Harleys through 31 states, onto 17 ferries, over the highest paved road in North America. I always planned the itinerary, my dad always followed along.

Day One: I decide to head east until I hit the Mississippi and follow it south. I have packed my one-person tent and sleeping bag. I have taken $200 from my poker fund.

Oh, I have lots of stories, but this one—our last one—will tell you everything you need to know.

When I hit Iowa I realize I should probably clear the next few days off with my boss. He doesn’t question it.

Night Two: Stay at the Mark Twain Cave Campground. When the temps drop in the night, I put on my moldy sweatshirt.

On the final day of what turned out to be our last motorcycle trip together, my then84-year-old dad and I rode North Dakota’s Enchanted Highway, a collection of the world’s largest scrap metal sculptures along a 32-mile stretch of road.

Night One: Set up my tent on a $12 a night site at Pike’s Peak State Park in McGregor, Iowa. The temps have dropped into the mid40s. They are no longer selling firewood at the park.

Day Three: I head north along the east side of the Mississippi. Stop in Galena, Illinois, the former home of Ulysses S. Grant. Visit the Grant Museum. Drive to the Ulysses S. Grant Home State Historic Site. The Ulysses S. Grant impersonator, unfortunately, is on hiatus for the season.

I then detoured us southwest, for an hour, until I found the spot I was looking for and pulled onto the shoulder of the two-lane road. There, on a hill in a desolate prairie field, sat an oversized oven—maybe 15 feet high, that someone had made out of metal—with the front oven door removed. My dad stopped behind me. DAD: Why did we stop? Is there some problem with your motorcycle? ME [pointing]: See that oversized oven with the door removed? DAD: OK. Yes. What about it? ME: What we’re looking at here [long pause] is the big, wide-open range. DAD [staring at me, dumbfounded]: Did you really have us ride for an hour for a pun that … ME: [driving off on motorcycle.] Anyway. The next year, my dad—at 85—decided he just physically couldn’t keep riding. He 12

It’s 8 p.m. and I don’t want to just sit in my tent in the cold. I walk to a nearby bar for a beer and dinner. The bartender, though, tells me they don’t serve food. I start to leave. “But,” she says, “we still have some stuff left from the free brat bar from the football game.” A free brat bar! On a table at the back of the bar sits a small buffet with two brats—the last two!—left. I fill a plate. Text a pic of my brats and the story of the free game buffet to my dad. “Wasn’t the football game hours ago?” he asks. He does not say anything about wishing he was here. That night, in the tent, I realize I have desperately under-packed for the cold. At maybe midnight, I go to my motorcycle and pull my emergency sweatshirt from my saddlebags. It’s the first time I’ve used it in three years. I also sleep with my motorcycle gloves on.

Night Three: I am down to my last $50 or so, but it’s raining slightly, and I can’t bring myself to spend another night in the tent. And I don’t want to wear that moldy sweatshirt again. I check my hotel reward apps to see if I have any room discounts. Why, I have earned enough points to get a sketchy hotel in Dubuque, Iowa for just $17! The room, when I check in, looks like I may have paid too much. But, that night, I walk to a nearby bar and get some of the best Buffalo wings I’ve ever had. Then I send the day’s photos to my dad— the Ulysses S. Grant’s home, the Buffalo wings, the duct tape holding the window air conditioning unit in place in my motel room. He texts back right away. “Wish I was there.” ROCHESTERMAGAZINE.COM

45 days for the electricity to come back on. It didn’t. So we went to Peru to visit my husband’s family and wait for things to calm down on the island. And then COVID hit.

Are you originally from Rochester? No, I am not. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico.

Oh my gosh. We were so thankful we had family we could visit while we waited for the island to recuperate, and we knew a vaccine would become available. In the meantime, we decided to have a baby like a lot of people who were locked in during the pandemic! Thankfully everything went great. We had a little boy, Adrian. He’s 2-1/2 years old now.

How did you end up in Rochester? It’s a long story! From Puerto Rico, I went to the University of Tampa for four years. Then my aunt got sick, so I moved back home to San Juan to take care of her. I’ve been with my husband since we were 17, and we’ve always gone with each other wherever we move—so after my aunt passed away, we were talking about next steps. We decided to move to the Amazon jungle in Peru to start a fish farm. That is not what I expected you to say. One of our friends from college had a business degree, and he was telling us about this business. So we decided to go for it. We raised paiche, prehistoric fish. They look like dinosaur fish. They’re the biggest freshwater fish in the world. It takes more than three, four grown men to grab a fully grown one. How long were you in Peru? We were there for two years with the business; then we ended up selling it and moving back to Puerto Rico. And then we were hit by Hurricane Maria. It was very, very bad. Hurricane Maria just decimated the island. We thankfully didn’t lose our home, but the whole island was without electricity for an extended amount of time. That’s tough. We waited

You must’ve moved to Rochester soon after. We always knew we wanted to go back to the U.S. eventually. We could choose anywhere we wanted to go because we were starting from scratch. We did a lot of research, and decided Minnesota was the right choice. We wanted a place that was good to raise a family, and that would avoid natural disasters like hurricanes and tremors. So you just came to Minnesota? We jumped right in and hoped for the best like we’ve always done! We flew to the Twin Cities, then just started driving, just traveling. This was October 2021. We started going upwards, to Duluth. And we liked Duluth, but thought it was too cold for us. I have tropical blood! So you turned around. We went south. We found out that Mayo was in Rochester, and thought, “That sounds like a nice choice, let’s check it out.” We drove here and we loved it from the get-go. The people were kind. It

was cold but not too cold. It felt small but wasn’t small. There was no traffic, which was beautiful. And having the best medical care team in the world is a nice plus. I always say our family is like the Goldilocks story. We tried different places and we got to Rochester, and it was just right. You just knew. We knew when we got here. I remember feeling excited about starting a new chapter in our family’s life with our newborn son. It’s a perfect place to raise our family. How did you meet your husband? We met through a mutual friend in school when we were 12. We became best friends almost immediately, and at 17 started dating. His name is Francisco, but people here call him Frankie. What will you be doing in five years? I’ll start looking for work once my son is school-aged. I’d like to work with children. I used to do English tutoring to kids during the pandemic, and I feel like I have a knack for teaching. I can put my psychology degree to good use. I studied child development, child psychology. Five things you love? Family, video games, books, movies, nature. Favorite video game? I’m going to say Elden Ring. I feel like it’s the perfect game because it’s an open world setting where you have total control. Sometimes I just take a stroll through the game and enjoy the beautiful graphics. Advice you give? To not be scared of change, to just jump in. I’m anything but fearless, but I feel like I’ve been very good about getting out of my comfort zone and thinking about my future and hoping for the best. I moved to the Amazon jungle in Peru without having been there. I was scared. I was nervous. But I decided it was worth the risk. If you make a decision with your gut and your heart and you go with a positive mindset, you’re more likely to come out the other side wiser and happier than you were. ROCHESTERMAGAZINE.COM

Best Holiday Lights Ever?

In December of 1950, for the first time, the south wall of Mayo Clinic’s Plummer Building (on First Ave. and Second Street SW) was turned into a 128-foot-tall Christmas tree.

“Formed by 60 lighted windows, the tree stands 128 feet high and 131 feet wide,” according to a 1950 description in the Mayo Clinic newsletter, Mayovox. “On top of the tree, which extends from the fourth floor through the twelfth, is a fivepointed star of plywood with a light on each point and one in the center.” The tradition—which required the security team to manually turn on the lights every night, and turn them off the next morning—ran until 1956, when “remodeling on many floors has so changed the pattern of lights that it just isn’t possible any more.” In 2013, the tradition—now with 7,000 high-efficiency LED lights— was reinstated. And will run, again this year, from 4:30 p.m. until 8 a.m. daily through Jan. 1.

1942: Mayo recruits Earl as part of a

team to solve the kind of problem that could cost a country a war. The Army Air Force had reached out to Mayo Clinic with a problem: Allied ﬁghter pilots in World War II, during the dangerous movements of air combat, often black out due to extreme G-forces exerted on their bodies. And in-air blackouts cause crashes, and kill pilots. The Mayo Team builds a centrifuge and a basket to carry a human test subject to test ﬂight conditions. Wood himself logs more than 100 trips in the centrifuge, and notes that he “only” lost consciousness for a total of 15 minutes.

1944: The Mayo team designs a ﬂight

suit consisting of air bladders that inflate as G-forces increase. These bladders constrict blood flowing to the pilot’s calves, abdomen, and thighs and keep more blood flowing to the brain. Wood himself tests the prototype in flights aboard a dive bomber. The suits are issued to combat pilots in 1944, and suits based on this design are still standard today. The team also invents the M1 maneuver, in which the pilot shouts or grunts under extreme G-forces—an exercise that is revolutionary in resisting G-forces.

1945: Jimmy Doolittle, the World War II hero and four-star general, makes several top-secret trips to Mayo Clinic during the testing of the ﬂight suit. Doolittle, during a press conference in 1945, says this about the ﬂight suit research: “It’s just incredible what was accomplished by the Mayo team. Their role in helping to win World War II was unequaled.”

Earl Wood graduated summa cum laude from Macalester College in June of 1934. He enrolled at the University of Minnesota that fall and moved into an apartment on Grand Avenue in Saint Paul. The apartment was part of a local funeral home. To reduce the monthly rent, he agreed to assist the mortician with embalming and preparing bodies for burial. The basement was full of empty coffins, and in a separate room were the embalming fluids. This obviously was a dead-quiet place where Earl could get a lot of studying done. He commuted daily to the University of Minnesota by hitchhiking, which was common in those days. Sometime during the spring or summer of 1934, Earl and longtime girlfriend Ada Peterson became engaged. There was no formal announcement—nor was there any engagement ring, due to a lack of funds. The young couple decided to wait several years to get married, since Ada had many bills from college that she had to pay and Earl was busy studying during his first two years of medical school.

took the offer from Harvard and the couple moved to Boston. In May of 1942, with World War II in full force, Earl received another fellowship offer from Mayo Clinic. He once again turned it down. However, one evening Earl and Ada went out to the movies to see Dive Bomber, starring Errol Flynn and Fred MacMurray. It depicted the difficulties pilots were having with the advancement of aircraft flying at higher speeds and higher altitudes. It recognized the difficult problems of aviation medicine as pilots in various maneuvers or altitudes would pass out and crash. This movie also depicted experiments with a pneumatic belt that would keep blood above heart level in an attempt to prevent a pilot from blacking out. Recognizing the physiological challenges of high-altitude flight and prevention of blackout depicted in this movie—and the potential to contribute to the war effort— Earl went in to talk to his boss, Dr. Krayer at Harvard the next day. Earl told Dr. Krayer that he needed to go to Mayo Clinic to help with their work on the war effort. Dr. Krayer responded, “Earl, if you feel so strongly about this, then you must go.”

Soon after his graduation from the University of Minnesota, Earl received an offer of an internship from Harvard University to begin in September 1941 at a salary of $2,400. On that same day, a letter from Dr. Charlie Code arrived in which he urged Earl to accept a fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester that same year. By this time, Dr. Code had been appointed professor of physiology at Mayo Clinic and chairman of the department of physiology and biophysics.

In the summer of 1942, Earl and Ada packed up their Ford coupe and headed west to the prairies of Minnesota. On arriving in Rochester, they rented a small house on Ninth Avenue SW. On November 2, 1942, their daughter, Phoebe, was born.

Earl, Ada, and their young daughter Phoebe took up residence in a small rental house on Ninth Avenue SW after moving to Rochester in 1942. But in 1946, when Ada learned she was expecting a second child, it soon became apparent that this house would not be adequate for a growing family. They purchased a modest home on the edge of town, on Second Street NW next to Kutzky Park and Cascade Creek, where their kids

would have ample places to run and play. On the other side of the park and creek was a cornfield and, beyond that, the Chicago and North Western train tracks. From the back windows, they could see the farmer working in the fields and twice a day watch the Chicago 400, a passenger train to Chicago, pull into the depot near downtown Rochester. Unlike most Mayo Clinic staff doctors,

Earl Wood and his family did not live in a large house on Pill Hill in Southwest Rochester. The name Pill Hill was given to the neighborhood where many of the Mayo Clinic staff had houses in the 1930s. These were large, beautiful homes with many rooms and lots of space. The physicians who did not live on Pill Hill had homes with land southwest of Rochester, in an area called Bamber Valley. The Wood family home was much smaller

and decidedly modest in comparison to the typical home of Mayo Clinic medical and administrative personnel. Mark Goff Wood arrived on the scene on October 8, 1946. Much to the young family’s surprise, Guy Harland Wood arrived on August 15, 1947, just 10 months later. Obviously, this was a very busy household, with two active boys, though Phoebe assisted with some of the chores that could be done by a fiveyear-old. In another surprise, Earl Andrew (Andy) Wood arrived on a bitter-cold night in January 1953. The modest little home on Second Street was full and active. Phoebe had her own room, while the three boys shared another room. Things got a little crowded, particularly in the mornings when they were getting ready for school, since there was only one upstairs bathroom, with a bathtub, and a small bathroom downstairs. Life on Second Street with four active kids was chaotic at best. Earl was always first to wake up in the morning, usually around 4:00 a.m. He would get up, put on his bathrobe, go down to the kitchen, and heat some water for instant coffee (Nescafe). He would then sit down at the dining room table and have quiet time to work on scientific manuscripts and correspondence. About 6:30 a.m., he would go upstairs to nudge the family up to get ready for school. The house became a buzz of activity, with three or four kids vying for the single bathroom upstairs and figuring out what to wear for the day. Breakfast on weekdays was usually cold cereal or, occasionally, eggs and bacon.

Ada would not let the kids out the door unless they looked respectable. They usually walked or biked to Lincoln Elementary School, five blocks away. This occurred rain or shine and in the dead of cold Minnesota winters. Later, when the kids were going to Central Junior High, Earl might give them a ride and drop them off on his way to the Medical Sciences Building. Once the kids were out of the house, Ada had a few moments of quiet time. She also had to deal with lots of household work, including laundry, making beds, vacuuming, grocery shopping, planning meals, and getting ready for the kids to come home between 3:30 and 4:00 p.m. Often, she would go out for coffee with friends. Occasionally, her good friend Louise Lambert would come over and they would sit in the kitchen and chat, drinking coffee and smoking Kool cigarettes. By 4:00 p.m., all hell would break loose, with kids coming home with their books and

homework and changing clothes to go outside and play with friends before dinner. The kids were also encouraged to practice their musical instruments or perhaps start on homework during this time. Most evenings Earl arrived home between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m., in time to watch part of the Huntley-Brinkley Report [the NBC news show]. Some evenings Earl did not come home until very late due to experiments in the lab or physiology or cardiovascular meetings at the Foundation House. If Ada didn’t know about his dinner plans beforehand, it usually led to a heated discussion upon his arrival home. Most evenings after dinner, the kids would go upstairs to do their homework and Earl would take off his shoes, loosen his trousers and belt, and lie on the sofa reading the evening edition of the Rochester Post-Bulletin. ... Earl was in bed by no later than 9:00 p.m.. He would fall asleep reading the latest edition of Scientific American or Circulation magazine.

Andy has authored several articles on the development and assessment of ergonomic and health promotion programs in industry. As an individual with severe dyslexia, Andy is a graduate of the Rochester Reading Center and is a spokesperson for the Dyslexia Institute of Minnesota.

10 (or so) questions with ... Jon Kittleson, pet portraitist Rochester Magazine: Okay. I’m going to give you some names. You tell me what they have in common with you. Professional golfer Curtis Strange, singer Pharrell Williams, and Juice Newton. She sang “Playing With The Queen of Hearts.” Also, that “just call me angel of the morning” song. Jon Kittleson: They are all from my hometown [Virginia Beach, Virginia]. RM: Yes. They actually all went to your high school, to Princess Anne High School.

RM: Were you at Princess Anne High when they had the big fire? JK: I was starting freshman year. Yeah. They had an abandoned mall in town and so we ended up going to that mall for an entire year. They just set up the different empty and they had different classes in there.

JK: Pharrell Williams used to hang out at the school. He was a few years older than me.

RM: So you grew up less than an hour from Smithfield, Virginia. And Smithfield is the home of the world’s oldest edible ham AND the world’s oldest peanut. Have you ever been JK: I really had no interest in art before that. to that museum? It’s the Isle of Wight County Then I had the wrestling accident and that Museum. was it for sports. I did a few different art projects in [high school] art class, and my art JK: I don’t think so. teacher just thought I had something there. RM: That’s a missed opportunity. I was I ended up becoming more interested in art actually on a motorcycle trip to North through my junior and senior year. I mean, Carolina and I made a one-hour detour to I had enough desire to go to a community stop in Smithfield to see the world’s oldest college and my art history professor liked my peanut. How could you be that close to it and art and just liked my style. She really liked it, not have seen it? and it encouraged me. JK: I am not sure. RM: So where does your style come from? I RM: Well, maybe it’s just me. RM: You’ve been diagnosed with Rapid Onset Dystonia Parkinsonism.

You really have to have some goals and passions that are beyond your immediate outlook.

JK: It took a long time for them to diagnose it, but they think the wrestling accident contributed to it. It took 10 years to determine what it was. With the help of Mayo doctors, they were able to determine what I have. RM: The Rapid Onset Dystonia diagnosis, again, kind of moved you to the next level of art. I mean, both of these kind of traumatic incidents brought art more to the forefront for you. Is that a fair assessment? JK: I would say so. Because I still had a desire for art. I still had that deep creativity. I wanted to pursue it. And yet, my body had changed where I couldn’t do the things I used to do. So I desired to be an artist, and I had to make that work. So I actually have gone to 22 states now with my art. RM: What’s something you’ve learned from your life experiences? JK: Persistence is a good thing to have. Especially when you face a lot of physical challenges. Discouragement can eat you alive if you’re not careful. You really have to have some goals and passions that are beyond your immediate outlook. You need to focus on 5 or 10 years down the road and not focus on your inability to do stuff. There’s no way I can run a mile, and so there’s no reason to focus on that. But I definitely can be an artist, so there’s a good reason to focus on that. ROCHESTERMAGAZINE.COM
